You followed behind Daryl as he grunted and groaned making his way through the forest. You were making your way to Hilltop after deciding that would be the best place for you now you were nearing the end of your pregnancy, of course you went by car but the damn thing broke down half way. You had never felt so unfit before as you slugged behind the archer, your hand propping your stomach up to relieve some of the weight that seemed to be holding you back until your body had enough of walking. You propped yourself up against a tree and begged Daryl for a five minute rest. He laid down a blanket on top of the messy forest floor, giving you somewhere clean to sit down if you felt you needed to. You both took this time to get a well deserved drink from your canteen and you allowed a satisfied sigh pass your lips as the cool water eased your throat.
You watched with a smirk on your face as the father of your child paced back and forth before pushing yourself from the tree and then it happened. Your cervix felt like they were being attacked by a vice and the sensation of a warm liquid ran fast and hard down your legs. “Shit!” you whispered, turning back to the tree for support. Daryl hadn’t noticed what was happening nor did he hear you cuss, he was far too entrapped in his own thought process of how to get you to the hilltop and quick before anything bad happened. “Daryl!” you shouted out, your palms rested against the tree trunk as you practiced the breathing methods Michonne had told you about before you left. The pain subsided for a moment but the panic had already set in, you tried to turn to face the archer until another wave of contractions attacked your pelvis.
“Daryl” it was more of a scream this time and seemed to catch the archers attention instantly, jogging over to you with wide eyes, not entirely sure of what was happening. He placed his hand on your back before leaning slightly to catch your gaze.
“Wha’s happenin?” the panic in his face would have made you burst into a fit of laughter if you weren’t currently being tortured by your own body.
“What the fuck do you think!” you spat at the man, the pain slowly coming to an end allowing you to replace the trunk of the tree with Daryl’s shoulders, your hands were able to grip onto them much better
“Can’t ya just – hold It in. We’re almost at hilltop” you shot the man a look and he knew instantly to shut up. He had seen some scary scene before but nothing quite compared to the look you gave him.
Daryl tried his hardest to remain calm but the sweat that dripped from his pale face as he laid you down on the blanket told you a completely different story. He was petrified and if you allowed yourself to be honest, you were too. Some of the twigs that the blanket laid on top off poked up into your back but the pain that kept coming and going didn’t allow your mind to register much of anything else. You didn’t even realise that Daryl had taken off your pants until you looked down at your legs. “Shit, the baby’s not waiting!” you called out, feeling the pressure against your delicates. Daryl could barely think straight, you tried to guide him the best you could but now he was on his own, you needed to push and he needed to deliver this baby on his own.
He’d tell you to breathe and push as he winced at the scene that was playing out between your legs. He couldn’t believe Rick told him this was a beautiful, magical moment, it was non of the above right now. When he saw the head of the baby finally push through, it was like he went on autopilot. He cradled the head and helped you as you pushed, guiding the body until finally his baby was born. It turned out Rick wasn’t lying after all. As he held his child in his arms, he couldn’t take his eyes from him, his heart had never felt so full before and though he thought it wasn’t possible the love he held for you just grew higher and higher as he counted the tiny fingers and toes of his baby boy. “Told ya it was a boy!” as he brought your baby to your level so you could finally set eyes on him for the first time.
Your eyes instantly started to glaze over as your son was presented to you, a small laugh passing your lips as he cried signalling that they had successfully delivered a healthy baby but your laughter was cut short as your cervix seemed to twitch again. Shit. Daryl wrapped your son up in a blanket after wiping away some of the goo that stuck to his skin. “Daryl, I don’t think we're finished” instantly the archers head snapped to face you, not fully believing what he had just heard. Again, panic had set it. He looked around the ground finding a safe place to put his son down before going back to his original position between your legs. He squeezed your knees when he finally understood what was happening. The world seemed to go fuzzy for a second and the archer scrambled to get better balance.
You didn’t waste any time, the pain and pressure telling you that you needed to push was overbearing and so you did as you body asked, barely giving Daryl time to come around. He did his best and followed the same formula he used for the arrival for his son until yet another baby was cradled into his arms. A tear fell down his cheek as he looked down at the baby in his arms, occasionally he’d look over at the first born to make sure he was okay before he handed over your child to you.
You scooped the newborn into your arms, you too were crying as you cooed at the baby “a girl” you whispered and you were sure you heard the archer hum with joy at your words. You looked to your side to find Daryl holding his son in his arms, looking back down at you. A small laugh passed your lips as you allowed your mind to go over what had just happened, you knew that everyone would get a kick out of hearing a story where Daryl Dixon, the man who isn’t scared of anything, almost passed out at the sight of his child being born.
Despite all the pain, despite the panic you were convinced it was all worth it just for this moment. Your head rested against Daryl’s shoulder, the two of you in awe at love you held in your heart for two very small beings. You knew this is what they meant when they said love at first sight. Daryl felt it too as he watched his children squirm around in their blankets. He made a promise that he would never let anything bad happen to them, he promised them he would give them everything and anything they wanted and they would never have to grow up the way he did. He promised to give them all the love in the world and then some. He never said them aloud but he meant every word, that was his new purpose in life. He looked down at you, his heart felt like it was going to explode when he saw the way you looked at your daughter. He leant down slightly and placed a soft kiss on your forehead “a love ya”
