[ S T O R Y ~ U P D A T E ] excerpt from home - chapter nine:
Kakashi scrubbed his hands over his face, then shoved them into his pockets. With a sigh, he faced her fully. "You really don't pull any punches." "And you continue to sacrifice yourself, even when you don't need to." Sakura stepped towards him. "If this is going to work – whatever this is – we both get equal say and put in equal work." Kakashi halved the distance between them. "Okay." "Okay?" Kakashi nodded and shifted closer. "Okay." "Good." Sakura grinned in triumph. "Now, tell me: what do you want?"

[Kingdom Hearts Request] How about S/O sharing a Paopu fruit with Roxas, Axel, Ventus, Terra, and Riku if you don't mind? I know Riku knows the whole legend with the fruit, but it'd be so cute with the others not really knowing and then finding out
Sharing a Paopu Fruit with Roxas, Axel, Ventus, Terra, and Riku
notes - I LOVE KINGDOM HEARTS! I don't often get KH requests, so to get this was a delight! Like this whole idea is super sweet and I am more than happy to do it for you, especially as a Terra and Axel simp :) thanks so much anon and I hope you enjoy!!! <3
Roxas
Tumblr media
when I tell you that this lil guy's jaw was hanging open when you told him
and like, he started getting all stuttery and saying that he isn't worth being all connected to you and stuff
what a doll
and you were just giggling while he was panicking
though he is more than happy to have life shared with you like that
he didn't even think he would find anyone that wants to share a destiny with him especially since he's just a confused lump of a boy, so he is more than happy
Axel
Tumblr media
he was SUPER hungry
so you convinced him to share this fruit with you
you were giggling and holding back laughter the whole time, but he really didn't care considering the dude was hungry as hell
once he put that thing away, you finally told him
and let me tell you, he was BAFFLED
at first, he laughed at you, thinking that you were joking
and once you told him that you weren't, he went silent
and then got a little teary
he quickly wiped said tears though and just looked at you, tilting his head and asking, "you really want our hearts to be connected, y/n? even if I don't have one?"
you just told him, "everyone has a heart, Axel. Even you."
and omg he fell in love
Ventus
Tumblr media
you wanted to share the fruit with him so bad, but you wanted to tell him the conditions first
when you did, he agreed SO FAST
he wants to be there to protect you and be there for you your whole life, so to have a destiny that goes hand in hand is a dream come true
he wants to go through everything with you and eating that fruit in the sunset was amazing for you two
Terra
Tumblr media
you and him have talked about the fruit before, you've explained it to him and the two of you have even joked about sharing one
but once you actually got one and showed Terra, the man was BLUSHING
"you really wanna do this y/n?"
"of course I do, dummy! what? you don't wanna do it or something?"
"n-no! it's not like that I just... are you sure?"
of course you were sure, so you cut that thing in half and handed it to him
he was hesitant, as he didn't want you getting involved in anything dangerous in the future, but you were so sure that you wanted to share this life with him and he was more than grateful <3
Riku
Tumblr media
when i tell you that you got this man BLUSHING
he wanted to share the fruit with Kairi YEARS AGO, but it never worked out because it was meant for her and Sora, so when you offered to share it with him after everything that had happened in the events of KH2, he couldn't believe you
of course he agreed though, you two had been through so much and you fought so hard that he knew that it was perfect that you two were to share this fruit
it was also perfect because you were back on Destiny Islands smiling and having the time of your life <3

If Only There Was Someone Out There Who Loved You
Tumblr media
❄️ An illustration for my most recent SoRiku story, If Only There Was Someone Out There Who Loved You ❄️
Summary: Having a heart that can connect so deeply with others isn't always a good thing. When Elsa's magic struck Anna's heart Sora felt a shard of ice in his own, and now there are white streaks in his hair and snowflakes appearing on his hands.
His friends are determined to find a way to help him, but if true love is the only thing that can fix this then he knows there's no saving him. He isn't even sure he knows what love is, and he doubts there's anyone who feels it for him.
For the ice effects I used these Ice Brushes

I Really Could Stay Chapter 1
I Really Could Stay: ~1700 words. Sora and Kairi are starting to feel the strain of endless battles and missions on their relationship. But a looming separation on Christmas makes them both think about what they want for the future.
Story Info: Sora/Kairi. Set Post-Canon. Alternating POVs. Established Relationship. Light Angst, Romance, Fluff, Mutual Pining, Hurt/Comfort, Healing, Christmas.
Chapter 1 | Chapter 2 | Chapter 3 | Chapter 4 | Chapter 5
Tumblr media
Sora was in one of his moods again.
Riku had known Sora his entire life, and his best friend had never been particularly good at masking his emotions. Not that he was really trying to at the moment. He was currently gripping the controls of the Gummi Ship with a scowl on his face so fierce that it would’ve been intimidating if it were directed Riku’s way.
Long gone were the days when Sora’s scowls made him look like an angry puppy. Riku was always going to be taller and bigger than his friend, but Sora had finally hit his adult height about a year ago and had the strength and fighting prowess to show for it.
Lucky bastard. He was just the right size to still move quickly while also packing quite the punch, as their sparring session earlier today had proven. Riku was stronger but not as fast, and he had a bruise on his arm from a well-aimed Keyblade blow to prove it.
“What’s wrong?” Riku asked, lounging on one of the nearby seats. He took a swig of his green tea and tried to keep reading his book. High school had to get finished somehow, and Riku was already two years past the normal graduation date. Twenty years old and still a student, how lame. At least he’d be graduating soon.
“I’m fine,” Sora ground out, though his tone made it clear he was anything but.
“It’s Kairi, isn’t it?” Riku didn’t even have to look up from his book to sense the change in Sora’s demeanor.
“It’s already been a week since I last saw her,” Sora said, his voice charged with emotion as the Gummi Ship lurched to the right, “and now I get sent on another last minute mission without any break? And right before Christmas too. What if I miss Christmas with her? How are we supposed to have a relationship like this?”
“You’ve managed this long,” Riku pointed out. A week or two weeks of separation was nothing compared to an entire year.
The Gummi Ship bounced up and down, and Riku’s tea splashed on him. He sensed more than saw the daggers Sora was glaring at him.
“Eyes on the skies,” he wryly remarked as he surveyed the damage to his clothes.
“Things are different now, Riku. We’re not kids anymore,” Sora said with just the note of petulance in his voice that made him sound like he still was one. Riku supposed his friend still had some maturing to do. They all did. It wasn’t like any of them had had normal growing up experiences. In some ways they were far beyond their peers; in others, far behind, and times like this made that very, very clear.
“Then stop moping and whining and ask Kairi to marry you already,” Riku said as he mopped up the spilled tea. His friends would have a lot more official recognition and the perks that came along with it if they would just tie the knot. They’d been dating for several years at this point. Why not just seal the deal already?
Sora groaned in frustration, running a hand through his spiky hair as he began the landing cycle. “But that would be even worse! Being separated from my wife all the time? I’d be a deadbeat husband.” He sighed and examined his hands, still tightly gripping the controls as he steered the ship. “We couldn’t bring kids into that mess either. I don’t want to be a deadbeat dad. I’m already a deadbeat boyfriend.”
Riku returned to his book. “Then you’ll have to make a choice. Do you keep traveling the worlds as the hero of the Keyblade, or do you settle down with Kairi?”
“I can’t make that choice yet!” Sora cried, his eyes flashing. Riku grabbed a spare scrap of paper to use as a substitute bookmark. This was going to take more than just a half-assed conversation to resolve. He waited patiently as Sora landed the Gummi Ship.
“If I don’t stop,” Sora continued once the ship’s engines had powered down, “it’s gonna drive Kairi and I apart! But there are still so many people out there who need my help. How can I turn my back on them?”
Riku sighed deeply. When they’d first started this adventure, things like marriage and family and long term commitments had seemed far away. Now those things loomed closer and closer. He didn’t have an answer for Sora because he didn’t have an answer for himself. And Kairi being a Keyblade wielder too made things more complicated. She was often sent out on missions as well, and even the times when Sora was on a break, there was no guarantee she would be too.
“The hero’s dilemma,” Riku told Sora at last. “We’ll never have normal lives, Sora. If you want a normal life, you’ll have to give up all of this,” he said, gesturing to their surroundings. “And no one can make that choice for you. Someday, you’ll either have to sacrifice your relationship with Kairi or your life as a Keyblade wielder. She’ll have to make that same choice if you want to make a relationship work long-term.”
Sora’s head jerked back at hearing the words “sacrifice” and “Kairi” in such close proximity to each other. But he was silent. The only noise was the faint Christmas music playing from the Gummi Ship’s speakers. It took a moment for Riku to notice the teardrops splotching onto Kairi’s lucky charm gripped in Sora’s palm.
Riku hated seeing his best friend cry. It made him uncomfortable because he couldn’t easily fix the problem.
“Listen, I’ll call Master Yen Sid tonight and ask if we can go back early if we finish the mission quickly,” Riku said. It was the best he could do under the circumstances. Maybe they could still make it home in time for Christmas.
“That sounds good,” Sora said, wiping his eyes. “I just wanted to be with her on Christmas. But I feel like Master Yen sends us out on missions on purpose when I’m more agitated and aggressive. Like he thinks I’ll fight better.”
That was entirely possible. Master Yen Sid was a good man overall, but he was also very calculating and would 100% figure out when each of them was in peak fighting condition.
“Well, do you?” Riku asked.
“When it’s between about four days and ten days of being separated from her, yeah, I do fight pretty well. After that I’m so irritable I’m worthless.” His eyes dropped to his hands. “And before that I’m too lovesick to be at my best,” he mumbled.
“With calculations like those, maybe you missed your calling as Ienzo’s research assistant,” Riku wryly replied as he opened his book again. It was surprisingly interesting and far less revolting than discussing Sora’s love life, and he really did want to know how it ended.
“What else am I supposed to do when I’m bored and frustrated?” Sora whined, flopping dramatically on the seat. “If I know when I’m in peak fighting condition, I’ll also know when I’m not. And that means I know what steps I need to take to avoid getting hurt—”
Riku scoffed. “You, be careful? You and Kairi both love to rush into danger, and then I have to fish you out of it. Imagine if you did get married and Master Yen Sid sent you on more missions together. My job would get a lot more stressful.”
“Hey, I’m trying my best here.” Sora scowled and his eyebrows did their best to express his sass, but then he sighed and rested his head against the back of the seat. “Do you think that’s why we don’t get to go on more missions together?” he asked in a small voice.
“You can’t concentrate to save your life when she’s anywhere nearby. You fight really well together, but the moment she gets so much as a cut, you panic and lose your focus.”
“So it is my fault.” Sora’s head drooped and his eyes were pained.
“I wouldn’t look at it like that. Keyblades make things more equal, sure, but you’ll always have certain advantages over her during combat. Magic can level the playing field, and she is a better mage than you—”
Sora pouted, and Riku rolled his eyes.
“—just barely, don’t look so offended. You’re never going to compete with the light in her heart and you know it. And she and you are both better mages than I am. But even with that advantage in one area of combat, the natural differences in raw physical strength between the two of you are still there. And that goes for any guy she has to fight. It’s only natural you worry about her.”
“Xemnas nearly broke her arm,” Sora whispered, resting his face in his hand. The haunted look in his eyes told Riku the memory might as well be from yesterday instead of four years ago. “Like he was just snapping a twig. And even when it’s just me and her…I’m not a big guy, but it still surprises me how much stronger I am than her sometimes.”
“But you know how to properly use and restrain that strength,” Riku pointed out, “and that’s what matters.”
Sora was silent.
“And did you just admit you’re not that big?” Riku asked, changing tactics. “Someone has finally given up on ever hitting six feet tall.”
“Hey, I made it to five ten, that’s pretty dang good for a runt!”
One look at Riku’s face made them both burst out laughing.
“Okay, okay, five eight and a half,” Sora amended.
“Who knew you had it in you.”
“Doesn’t matter, you’ll always be taller than me.” Sora was so mournful and melodramatic about it that Riku burst out laughing again. Sora grinned, and it was a welcome sight. Riku promised himself he’d complete this mission as soon as possible so his friends could be reunited in time for Christmas.
Sora was right. Riku teased him, but all those separations from Kairi couldn’t be good for their relationship. Helping his friends be reunited in time for Christmas was the least he could do.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A/N: This story is based on some ideas Alja and I brainstormed together earlier this year about how Sora and Kairi would handle being separated from each other frequently, and this is both a very belated birthday present for her and a Christmas present all in one. Happy belated birthday and Merry Christmas, @angel-with-a-pipette ❤️
There will be five chapters total, and I'll be updating daily until it's done.
Thank you for reading, and I hope you enjoyed the chapter!

Story Summary: Eight years ago, the Destiny Islands fell to darkness. The royal family was viciously slain when Lord Xehanort and the sinister Organization XIII used dark magic to take the throne. Except...
There are rumors on the islands. Rumors that young Prince Sora may have survived.
When the prince's betrothed, Princess Kairi of Radiant Garden, offers a reward for his safe return, Riku decides to seize the opportunity to leave the doomed islands once and for all. At the same time, an orphan named Skye sets out to discover his forgotten past in the hopes of finding his family-and his future.
Kingdom Hearts Anastasia AU.
Ships: Sora/Riku/Kairi, Aqua/Terra, Roxas/Namine, Axel/Saix
Rating: G
Warnings: Angst, Trauma, Memory Loss, Violence, Harm to Children, Psycological Trauma
Chapter Summary: Thanks to Riku's persistance, Skye and Princess Kairi finally meet... It was truly amazing how something that took so much time and work to build could fall apart in a matter of minutes.  Riku was still reeling from how fast everything had fallen apart for him as he stood alone outside of the theater. The play had ended a while ago, and after hearing what had happened, Donald and Goofy had rushed back to the hotel in the hopes of catching up with Skye. Riku knew it wouldn’t do any good though. Any trust they might’ve built with him over the past few days had been completely and irreparably broken; not a single thing any of them could say or do would be enough to change his mind now.  He should have known this was never going to work. His plan had seemed so simple, so straightforward when he’d first devised it. But everything had changed when Skye, when the real Sora showed up like the answer to a question he’d stopped asking years ago. Suddenly, it was no longer about him and his selfish longing to see Kairi again. It was about giving Sora back everything he deserved to have, his past, his crown, his kingdom, and all of the things that came along with them.

Beta Readers Wanted!
I'd like some help with my Kingdom Hearts fanfic; Dreams of Tomorrow, with any kind of proofreading in general. Also, you don't have to be into Kingdom Hearts to help with proofreading, as I want to make this story accessible to people new in the fandom.
Tumblr media
[Further Details Below]
The help I want includes things such as:
sensitivity readers
spelling/ grammar
just to give me an opinion on how it is to read/ how well it flows
any advice on structure
if the length is too much or too little
or you just have some general tips on the story itself!
And it's okay if you aren't comfortable with helping with spelling or grammar, even just general advice and your opinion on the story is welcome!
༺☆༻
What kind of story is it?
It is OC (original character) centric, but it does include many characters from the main series and expands on them some more. It is set pre the first game and sets up its events, so the main lore will be uncovered through the lens of someone as new to it as someone just starting the series. I want it to be for anyone of any age so I want to avoid overly mature content, but there will be some deeper and darker themes explored in a very all-ages sort of way.
As for genre, it is mostly:
Adventure
Mystery
Fantasy
Drama
With hints of:
Minor Levels of Horror
Sci Fi
Political Commentary
Romance
I'd probably define it as mostly Adventure/ Mystery.
༺☆༻
Summary (Spoiler Free):
'While we all know the story of Sora and his friends as the worlds are saved thrice over; little is known of the heroes and villains of those who struggled far away, in distant times and places. Sora encounters a travelling storyteller, whose tales of adventure, friendship, loss and love draw in the young hero. Maybe these fairy tales are merely for entertainment, or perhaps they hold a greater meaning. Sora must listen to the end to understand the truth of the tale; are these simply far off dreams, or a scattered truth to be awakened in time?'
༺☆༻
Synopsis (Not As Spoiler Free):
'Yoru, Zorya and Taiyo embark on a quest to find their respective missing loved ones, only to find each of their own motives overlap between a string of mysteries; missing students of a grand city of historical importance, a missing king whose disappearance seems to tie into the appearance of strange creatures that threaten the realm and the sudden threat from a new organisation that call themselves the 'Sin Seekers'. All the while, during this, the general populace speak of strange dreams and, inexplicably, the stars seem to be disappearing.'
༺☆༻
(I will update in the link itself as I go, but from posting I will go from the first 5-6 chapters and go from there)

That feel when you spend twenty minutes adjusting A03 search results to show you all of the possible fics that meet your criteria for that absolute "must read" fic feeling that's been bugging you for days...only to realize after combing through fifteen pages of results that you are really looking for the exact situation you yourself have in a WIP and has never been posted or completed. And nobody else has ever come up with that scenario so you can't find what you want, since you haven't finished writing it yet.
gods why must this happen every month

Meeting the Nobodys was the strangest experience in your life. You had a heart full of love and full of hope and full of memory after memory, so in order to see how to obtain it, a man named Xemnas had asked the other members of his organization to kidnap you.
At first, it felt like hell. A man named Vexen would visit your prison like room every morning with a plate full of food and run some tests on you. He would do examinations of your heart, play happy recordings that would make you smile, play sad recordings that would make you cry, and ask you questions you didn't know the answer to. Some you did know the answer to: where you were from, who your friends were, all that. You didn't know why you would ask these things, and you didn't know why you were answering them.
Vexen was never someone you hated, even if it felt like he was the one who was imprisoning you. He would bring you nice food and tell you a nice story from his day. Sometimes he would come in grumbling about something one of the organization members would do and it would leave you with a smile or even a small giggle.
You didn't often get to meet the other organization members though. You met Marluxia, who said you were beautiful every time he would come to visit. You met Demyx, who would always stumble into the room asking Vexen a stupid question. And of course, you met Xemnas, the big bad boss leader, the man lacking emotion on his face, the man who put you here. You hated him. You hated him so much. The Nobodys you made friends with were trapped by this man and because of him, you weren't allowed to leave your room.
You also met Xigbar. But while you were alone. You saw a portal appear on the ceiling one day and a long ponytail stick through before a man hanging upside down was only a few feet away from your face.
"Just wanted to see whatchu looked like." He had told you before disappearing. He did make time to visit you everyday and at least play one trick on you.
The few that you met were the only things making you feel human in that cold room you were shoved in.
You just felt so alone though. No matter who visited.
Every night you would hug your knees and watch the heart shaped moon from outside of the sliver of a window you had before falling fast asleep.
---
One morning, you woke up to the sound of someone pounding on your door. You jumped awake and hid yourself under your sheets before retreating to the corner of your bed. You hadn't met all of the Nobodys yet, who knew if this one was out to get you.
"Look, Larxene, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to do that, okay? Stop being all pissy and let's just go on our assigned mission, okay?!" The voice said from outside the door. It sounded young and almost... playful??
"Larxene, please open the door!" The voice shouted again. You didn't know what to do. It's not like you could've opened the door yourself, you didn't know how. So you stayed quiet. Maybe he would leave you alone? Plus, you didn't even know a Larxene.
"I'm coming in, Larxene!!" You threw your blanket aside and a purple and black portal appeared in your room, very similar to Xigbar's, but it wasn't him at all. Instead, it was a boy with bright red spikey hair, a crooked smile perminitely on his lips. He wore the same robe as the rest of the Nobodys, but you could already tell he was one of them when he used the portal to get in.
He stared at you in awe, his pale face turning a shade of red nearly brighter than his hair. He clicked his tongue and whistled once. "Now, this is embarrassing." He said, almost trying to avoid eye contact with you. "You must be... y'know, I'm not even gonna finish that sentence, I already know who you are. And you're definitely not Larxene. I always get lost in this giant ass castle. Sorry about that."
He made a portal and went to leave the room.
"Wait!" You shouted. Something about the way he smiled at you, the way he was so sincere... it made you feel... comforted. He felt like a human amongst these souls just floating about around you.
He turned to you. "What's up? Need me to grab Vexen or something?"
"No, please, don't get him... What's your name?"
He smiled, a little confused, but answered anyway. "I'm Axel," he walked forward and sat backwards on the nearest chair. "Got it memorized?" He tapped his temple with his index finger and you smiled.
"I'm y/n," you stuck out your hand and he gladly took it. Through his leather glove, his hand was warm, almost hot.
"Nice to meet you, y/n. I bet it's been pretty lonely in here, huh?"
You nodded and hugged your knees. "A little. I mean, I get an occasional visitor, but it makes the lonely moments even more lonely. At least Vexen is a good cook though."
"You think Vexen does all the cooking?!" Axel threw his head back in laughter. "No way in hell would we let that man's chemical fingers get all over our food. Xaldin cooks all the food. He's a super talented chef surprisingly. Have you met Xaldin yet?"
You shook your head, intrigued on how much this man wanted to talk to you.
"I'm not really surprised. He's really quiet. Have you met Saix yet?"
"Nuh-uh." You told him. That lonely feeling from earlier was nonexistent now.
"Good! That man is nothing but an ass, but he's my ass. I love that dude. Been best friends forever. He denies it, but I don't care."
You chuckled a little. Then you heard Axel tell you dozens of stories. Missions he went on with other members of the organization, sleepovers they would have together, "family game night", the whole nine yards. It made the people who came in to visit you seem a little less evil and more just like lost souls.
"Please come over more often," you had told Axel. "I like the sound of your voice."
He smiled, his ego clearly boosted. "Never heard that one before! Thanks cutie." He winked at you before leaving your room.
Even though you were alone, you felt a lot less... alone.
You really hoped he would come back.
And luckily he did. He never failed to visit you, telling you stories or just bringing you snacks and goofing off with you for a few minutes before he had to go. The two of you became incredibly close and the tests that Vexen would hold on you were showing that more and more everyday.
"Have you been around anyone other than myself for a long period of time?" Vexen asked you, shocked at the readings from your test.
"Axel. Why?"
Vexen hummed in response and ignored your question, getting up. "I'm going to get him in here, y/n. I'll be right back."
Quicker than he had left, Vexen was back, Axel right behind him. Axel smiled at you and pulled up a chair. As if Vexen wasn't even there, you continued your day as usual, laughing and telling each other jokes and stories.
Clearly, Vexen was pleased with the tests results because he printed them out and ran down the hallway, exclaiming Xemnas' name.
"What was that about?" Axel giggled. "The nutcase has somehow gotten nuttier it seems."
You laughed. "He's probably losing it because whenever I'm around you, my heart swells." You clasped your hands together and batted your eyelashes at Axel making him chuckle and roll his eyes as he pushed your face away.
"Shut up."
"I'm being serious!" You told him. "You are the only thing keeping me sane in this godforsaken prison of a castle."
Axel blushed. "R-Really?"
You nodded. "Really. I don't know what I would do without you, to be honest."
Axel smiled warmly at you and grabbed your hand, placing a kiss onto your knuckles. "Glad I could be here, y/n. You're probably the best thing that's happened to me here. I feel like I lost everything when I came to this castle, but I don't know, call it cheesy or whatever, I don't care, but you really make me feel alive. Like not like a...."
"Nobody?" You asked, looking softly at him.
"Yeah." He chuckled. "A Nobody."
He stood up and walked over to you. His hand was still in yours so he used it to help you up. You stood up and immediately wrapped your arms around the back of his neck. His arms wrapped around your waist and his thumb nicely stroked over your hips.
"Thank you, y/n."
"For what?"
"Everything."

Touch Cravings Chapter 2
~1320 words. Set post-KH3. Terraqua, Aqua and Ven friendship, and background Sora/Kairi. Grief, Angst, Fluff, Hurt/Comfort, Touch Starvation, Friendship, Romance.
Summary: Aqua is dealing with the effects of her time in the realm of darkness and then the grief of losing Sora. Thankfully, she has Ven and Terra to help her get through this chapter of her life.
Chapter 1 | Chapter 2
(Companion piece to Touch Hunger [Chapter 1 | Chapter 2]).

“Can I come in?” Terra asked.
Aqua’s face was flushed with embarrassment, but she nodded. She had wanted to see him, after all, even if she would’ve preferred less awkward circumstances.
Terra had to stoop a little to get through the door. Their rooms were in an old wing of the castle, which meant they were built back when people were shorter, and Terra was not a short man.
Aqua gulped as he drew closer. She was wearing baggy sleeping clothes and didn’t look very put together. Her bed had about five crumpled blankets on it too. These rooms got drafty at night, which was why fireplaces were in each of them. To distract herself, she quickly summoned her Keyblade and mumbled a quick Fire spell under her breath to light the fireplace. Now there was a warm, crackling fire in the corner, and its familiar sounds were relaxing and soothing.
Terra stood awkwardly by her bed. He likewise was dressed more comfortably than his usual attire: simple sweatpants and a t-shirt that still managed to be form-fitting because his muscles made it impossible not to be.
Her face flushed again, but for a much more pleasant reason this time. She patted the spot next to her, and Terra carefully sat down, making the bed creak.
“I’m sorry I’ve been so standoffish lately,” he said. “I’ve been thinking about everything and getting lost in my thoughts. But I want to be here for you and Ven.”
Her lips parted. She still wasn’t used to him being so open and honest. But he and she and Ven had talked about what had driven them apart, and bad communication was at the top of the list. So now they were all trying to get better at good communication. Which meant she should be honest too.
“Thank you,” she said. “I want that too.”
“To be honest, I don’t really know what to do next,” he admitted. “Being back feels better than I could’ve dreamed. Being myself again, being free of Xehanort for good, being whole…it’s like I’m getting a second chance at life. But with Sora gone, it feels wrong to be happy.”
“I know what you mean. Why are we here when he’s gone? I keep replaying what happened in my mind, over and over again, thinking about what I could’ve done differently.” She smiled bitterly. “Something I’ve always been good at. Ruminating over past mistakes. I don’t need other people to torment and torture me, I do it to myself just fine.”
“You and me both,” Terra said, his head drooping and his voice heavy. “I can’t help but feel like Sora’s death is my fault.”
“I feel the same way. I told Ven earlier that that means we’ll just have to save Sora. But I have no idea how.”
A few long moments of silence passed as Terra searched her face. “We could…we could go to the realm of darkness,” he said at last.
Aqua shuddered. It was a possibility she’d considered. That place had so many ties to death that it would be silly not to at least check. But the thought of returning to that hellish place where she’d been trapped for over a decade? Her stomach roiled at the thought of it.
Playing with one of the blankets on the bed, she said, “I know it isn’t rational, I know you and Ven would be with me, but I…I’m scared of going back. I’m scared of something happening and getting trapped there and winding up alone again.”
For so long she’d been on her own. Going back to that existence was her worst nightmare. She hoped Sora wasn’t alone. She wouldn’t wish the solitude on her worst enemy. It ate you up inside, made you crave something, anything from another living being. A kind word. A gentle touch. After a while she started hearing voices and fantasizing about past touches, hoping they would happen again. Haunted by the ghosts of her own memories. No wonder she’d created a phantom out of her fears.
“You won’t be. I won’t let that happen,” Terra promised, his voice low and determined. The look on his face as the flames from the fireplace flickered across it…she knew he was deadly serious and would keep this promise with his life.
Oh how badly she wanted to touch him. Her hand twitched as she restrained it. She hadn’t realized how much she would miss human touch during her time in the realm of darkness. But after returning, she realized it wasn’t just any touch she craved the most. It was his touch.
“It’s messed up, I know,” she admitted, “but after a while…even a stray Heartless brushing up against me during battle felt good. I sometimes…I sometimes let them, even if it meant I got clawed. Just to feel something.”
He rested his hand over hers, and a pleasurable shudder went through her whole body. She noticed his hand trembling a little too. Maybe he’d been touch starved in his own way too. He’d been in the realm of light, sure, but not as himself. His heart had been trapped inside that guardian, and how often had he really gotten any sort of physical affection?
“Thank you, that feels nice,” she murmured. He tenderly stroked her fingers, and it felt even better.
“You’re not alone, Aqua.” He caressed her arm, and her breath caught. She was no slouch in the physical strength department, but his hand was so much bigger and stronger than hers and yet so gentle.
“I know.”
He cupped her cheek, and now her breathing really was shaky. It felt so good and he was being so bold and everything was overwhelming. But a good kind of overwhelming. So very, very good. She just wasn’t used to touching again yet, especially not like…like this.
He smiled as he caressed her cheek, and she rested a hand over his. She wanted to touch him too. Wanted to give him what they both craved. They weren’t alone anymore, and why not celebrate that fact? If it would help her face her fears and go back to the realm of darkness to search for Sora, then there was nothing wrong with enjoying this closeness with Terra.
No, that wasn’t it either. She wanted to be close to him for the sake of being close to him. Might as well be honest with herself about it.
“Aqua,” he murmured, running a thumb over her lips, and her breath hitched. A part of her felt like this wasn’t real: the look in his eyes, the feel of his hand, the warm fire crackling in the corner. The fact they were in her room, alone, together. That he wanted her and she wanted him and they both craved each other’s touch and company. But it was real. It was real, and she wanted to savor every moment.
He leaned close, and her eyes fluttered shut. His lips brushed against hers, and all the bad memories fighting for her attention melted away. In this moment only the two of them mattered. She wasn’t alone. She was here with him, and in these stolen moments they could make up for lost time.
She wrapped her arms around him as he deepened the kiss, and he did likewise. Embracing at last. Oh, they’d hugged before, but never like this. If she’d been starving for all those years, she was now at a banquet for two and not entirely sure where to begin. But they would figure it out together, she was sure of that.
She’d saved him all those years ago, and now, in his own way, he was saving her. Or maybe it was more accurate to say they were saving each other. Ending the loneliness and solitude and longing for affection that had plagued them both.
Whatever it was, she was glad they had each other.
