The new chapter reminded me again why I can no longer be satisfied with Shounen.

Gojo's dead and people think Itadori has a chance to kill both Sukuna and Kenjaku....

"We can now see who's the main character" (ნიშნისმოგებით, თან) cuz Gojo was "in the way of the story" and "story couldn't progress with him in it."

Yeah, if Itadori randomly gets an upgrate out of thin fucking air, when he doesn't even have a innate technique - "but he is gonna develop Sukuna's CT". — How the fuck is he developing anything if Sukuna is no longer in his body but in Megumi's?? You are BORN with innate technique!! Unless Sukuna goes back inhabiting Itadori's body, Yuji isn't developing anything (unless Gege pulls out some residual cursed energy leftover bullshit — i.e. powerup out of blue sky).

As a writer myself, I don't really understand why some people (especially Sukuna's die hard fans) don't get it how killing of Gojo Satoru OFF SCREEN is bad writing so I'm gonna explain (and rant) here.

Okay, pals, sit down, we are having a lecture in basics!

"How to become good at Writing 101" states that the writer can write story in TWO main ways: 1) is called "tell" and 2) is called "show".

Every single writer and critic from centuries ago to today can confidently say that writer using "tell" is one of the weaker writing choice. Let's compare simple examples.

1) "He died." — this here is "tell". Nothing happened, it's boring.

2) "He felt fatigued, he eyes could no longer focuse on the scene in front of him. The sound of blood rushing in his ears was defeating.. To draw air in his lungs was becoming harder and harder as time went on..." etc — this is "show".

Of course death can come instantly but as a doctor (by profession) I can assure you that human brain even after being decapitated can remine "alive" for few seconds/minutes, can understand commans, can open eyes, can look at someone who is talking to them, etc..

Even Gojo looking down at himself, while he was being cut in two, would have been enough "showing".

But to have another character, in this case, Sukuna, explain i.e. "tell" how Gojo died is exactly how it sounds — "tell".

In every literature: classic books, modern books, manga, etc, "tell" is considered weak writing style and it seems even Gege is bound to it for now.

Also, what was the point of unsealing Gojo if he had to still die in the end? Him remining sealed would make no difference in the story - Sukuna vs Kashimo would still happen and now that Sukuna has "adapted" to Infinity means absulutely nothing, cuz nobody is using Infinity in the manga anymore for him to cut "space".

In fact Gege just replaced Gojo with Sukuna as overpowered character and we can see that he hated Gojo solely based on how "strongest" he was (and on his attitude) and how he couldn't kill him.

And how he handled his overpowered character? Killed him off screen. So how's Sukuna dying now? Also getting off screened??

And Gojo died with no regrets, apparently. His pseudo-son has fried brain, his sister and his speudo-dad are dead (at his own hands (even if Sukuna is using them)), most of his shikigami are gone, and Sukuna is parading around using him as "meat suit" — that should, at the very least, still be Gojo's regret (not saving Megumi) but, no, apparently Gojo is selfish bastard who doesn't care about anything and he is glad that he died (even after not acomplishing anything at all), but just mad that Sukuna didn't go all out???

Talk about anti climatic.

Gojo dying like this is kinda giving Madara and Kishimoto and I do not like that (I don't think anybody does)...

This is why I can't deal with Shounen anymore, because no matter what, at some point story telling gets inconstintent and I better stick with Seinen, cuz story there makes more sense.

toji to me is a very downtrodden character and thats the base of like aaalll my analysis of him. i think its a good idea to keep in mind that they're all living in a Secret Society with like negative morals and seemingly a core principle of might makes right. its not Just a lack of therapists, here, right, its an actively hostile environment. and then you have the zen'in upbringing which kicks that up a notch. i dont think toji is actually all that convinced of his power, bc he grew up being told he was worthless without cursed energy. he Never gets revenge on the zen'ins. why? his trauma response to this (get OUTTTTT) is different than maki's (spite them & eventually overcome them-- for approval ? hm.). shes intimidated by them sure but shes got that rebel spirit! girlboss. anyway back to the point bc i have one -> toji never escaped the zen'ins. he Wants to affirm that he's strong without cursed energy despite all the evidence that he actually is (and look how that final attempt went!). id like to propose a theory: he didnt think he could hide a child with The Zen'in Power Of All Time from the zen'ins. i dont think he could either tbh. ok actually are you caught up on the manga 🤨

Hello again! I really love this view of Toji's character, and it will surprise you to learn that I agree with you. I actually do. When I've been replying to your asks before, I've been talking from the perspective of his parenting decisions. But you're right, to take this any further we need to look at his actual personality/character.

Reasons to be sympathetic to Toji (a.k.a extend him the poor little meow meow factor):

abusive ex-family

no support

no therapy

dead wife

poor

gambling addiction

Toji was abused and was brought up in an environment where he literally meant nothing. He was useless. His reaction to this (get out, cut all ties, get stronger) is a response I'm actually proud of him for. So many people are probably still rolling around inside the Zen'in clan, having never got the balls to get out. Toji even chooses to change his name.

Being a cycle breaker is hard. For many people, it's impossible. For Toji - it was impossible. I extend sympathy and empathy to him here because it's DIFFICULT to let go of your upbringing and do it differently, do better. Toji can't bring him self to leave the jujutsu world. Nanami did it, and could have left forever if he so chose - but Toji can't. He's not a sorcerer but he can't let go of that being part of him, he can't stop his Zeni'in upbringing from shaping him. Neither can Maki, but Maki chooses to actively confront the clan and make physical changes to her life.

Toji just drowns in his spite - again, another thing we can hand him a poor little meow meow card for. He doesn't have the tools to heal or make better decisions. We feel bad for him. We sympathise. We want to still see him as a basically good person (and, to be honest, he probably is) who's just been scarred by the world.

So, to go back to what you said: you're right. He doesn't escape the Zeni'ns and I'm not convinced he wants to. He wants to show them he's better but he also can't bring himself to directly call attention to himself.

So let's bring this full circle and talk about what the original post was about: Toji's parenting. You said you still don't think he's a good parent. You're right, he isn't. He never will be. No Toji stan will ever be able to convince me that any of Toji's parenting choices were the right ones. But let's be sympathetic again, let's see how we can cut him some slack for those terrible decisions.

Does Toji even know how to be a parent?

We don't know a whole lot about Toji's parents. We know he hates them, if he ever truly knew them. We can infer he doesn't want to be like them. We're sure he never actively abuses Megumi, only passively, through abandonment. Perhaps he feels this is better than getting directly involved with a small child. He's described by the wiki as a cold person, specifically since his wife died and he 'reverted to his old self'. It's highly possible that Toji chose to abandon Megumi since he thought it was genuinely the best possible path. Toji can be cold, violent, and calculating, and he maybe felt he was in no position to be doing any parenting. We can sympathise with this!

(But he's still a bad father).

Did Toji sell Megumi to the Zen'ins so the kid could train to be a sorcerer?

It's definitely possible. I think this is what @honestlyyoungtyphoon was trying to tell me. Toji can't help a sorcerer kid, but he knows that Megumi needs training and he knows the Zen'ins would love to give it. And, yeah, maybe he's had this plan ever since he realised Megumi's technique, because he knew the Zen'ins would find out somehow.

Reasons this is still a bad parenting decision: the Zen'ins, while they treat their sorcerers well materially and are much kinder to them than they are to non-sorcerers, are still power hungry little bitches. Everyone knows this. While Toji would have no way to create a better plan, he knew himself it was bad. You ever wonder why Gojo went to see Megumi straight away? Because was Gojo was raised how the Zen'ins would treat Megumi. Gojo was living the life that Megumi would live in the future. And Gojo knew that it wasn't a life fit for anyone.

Toji knows that Gojos knows this. Toji knows Gojo could help Megumi. Toji passed the baton. And honestly, this is probably a reveal of part of Toji's true personality. He willingly sent a guy, his own personal enemy, to Megumi because he knew it was good for Megumi. Toji has a lot of pride and it must have taken a lot to ask that. THIS is probably what the aggressive Toji stans mean when they tell me Toji was a good parent.

So, overall: Toji is a damaged person who never received any kind of help and support from anyone except his (now dead) wife. There are many factors that help shape his decisions and parenting choices. Toji is probably a basically good person who is simply hurt by his circumstances, and even his truly awful decisions such as abandoning Megumi could have their roots in a belief that it was truly for the best. However: a good person does not make a good parent.

I love jjk but the thing is, Gege wants to have his cake and eat it, too. Let me explain. Gege sai he took a lot of inspiration from Hunter Hunter and in that, there is no character that is definitively the strongest. There is no character that could always win, because nen abilities are all about how you use them. Anyone could win against someone they are technically less powerful against with intelligence and strategy. And, I think Gege wanted to go in this direction, especially in the culling game, where he introduced a bunch of Characters who have very unique abilities that aren't simply about power. But then, he designs characters like Gojo and Sukuna who are undoubtedly the strongest regardless of strategy or intelligence. Like, there really is no character in jjk that wins solely because of intelligence and strategy (and wouldn't have won without that). So, when Gojo loses to Sukuna, that is the strongest character around just losing to another strong character who has his own abilities and Megumi's abilities. And I feel like it's going to be very hard for Gege to believably pull off the team killing Sukuna (and/or saving Megumi) because of how he has designed cursed abilities in JJK.

And this is not even to get into the similarities between culling game and HxH dark continent arc, and why one seems to have worked way better than the other.

I've never read HxH, so I can't speak to the similarities between the two, but I definitely agree with everything you said here. More rambling to be found below the cut!

I feel very strongly about this topic lmao so forgive my ranting.

But real talk, you said everything that needed to be said. I like the idea of a battle manga focusing on strategy/intelligence instead of straight up strength and I would normally love that for JJK... But only if Gege had actually foreshadowed that type of story sooner lmao.

There is definitely some strategy and intelligence used in fights, primarily in the culling games like you pointed out. But yeah. For the most part, the narrative has focused entirely on straight up strength and power. I mean, isn't that the whole problem with Sukuna right now? He's just too damn strong.

Also, in the event that Yuji/Higuruma/Yuta end up coming up with some bold strategy that leads to Sukuna's downfall, I'm going to laugh my ass off. Because seriously, why would that even make sense? Does Gege actually expect me to believe that (1) a teenager who has been a sorcerer for less than a year and who doesn't have any cursed energy, (2) a lawyer who was made a sorcerer like 10 seconds ago, and (3) another teenager who has been a sorcerer for only two years can actually come up with a better battle strategy than Gojo fucking Satoru?? Gojo's what? 29 when he dies? I just refuse to believe that a couple of 16-17 year olds and a dude who was a civilian until a few weeks ago have better battle tactics than the literal fucking strongest sorcerer. I need Gege to be so for real.

So yeah! The chance of Gege killing Sukuna in a satisfying way seems incredibly unlikely. If he wanted Sukuna to be taken down with intelligence and strategy then he shouldn't have bothered creating Gojo.

I'd imagine that Gege was going for "here's the strongest and then the Big Bad Guy will kill the strongest and all hope will be lost and our protagonist will have to find a way to overcome the Big Bad Guy!" But like... He's fucked around too much to do that. He made Gojo too powerful, he made Sukuna even more powerful, and now all of the sudden, there's no one left. Suddenly, we need to rely on an ass pull to expect a win from the team when ass pulls were pretty rare in JJK.

JJK isn't Naruto (lmao sorry Naruto stans ily) where a 12 year old kid is beating legendary ninjas with straight up talk-no-jutsu. I think that JJK has always been pretty good about keeping battle outcomes believable. But right now? The only way the kids win against Sukuna is with an ass pull. (At least, that's how I see it.) And that's such a waste of potential.

TLDR: I refuse to believe that some teenagers and a lawyer have better battle strategy than Gojo Satoru and I have very little faith in Gege's ability to kill Sukuna in a satisfying way.

I'm officially Team Sukuna killing everyone and everything because that's the only way I can see JJK ending in a way that makes sense.

this is a meta/recap post about the (affectionately dubbed) kill zenin arc (chp 138 + 148-152) of jjk, written mostly because I wanted to type it all up to make sense of to myself: maki and mai’s characterization in this arc, the motivations of their mother, and the death of zenin naoya.

also because im sick of searching for the same 20 images every day to post about them so im gonna put them all in one post for easy chronological reference ^_^ this arc destroyed my life i literally can’t stop thinking about them

although perfect preparation arc starts proper on chapter 148, I think that chp 138 is the true beginning, especially because that means that the arc begins with maki and mai’s mother:

or, well, not really. even though she’s a part of this conversation, she isn’t shown speaking or even opening her mouth at all. it’s kind of hard to tell who’s speaking when because of this, but naoya seems to be the one that’s asking the question “is she dead? that girl mai” and maki’s mom is the one that’s responding with “worry about the head of the clan...” etc. This is kind of interesting, because the panelling almost tricks you into thinking at first that maki’s mom is the one asking “is she dead?”, but naoya having the last word on the second page (and also the fact that he starts going on about the two cousins right after this) most likely means that he’s the one who’s actually asking. during this, her very first appearance in the series, we have no idea who she is, and we don’t learn until much later on. but knowing what we know now, which is that this woman is mai and maki’s mother, it’s a callous bait and switch; she’s not even the one that’s asking about mai, and she’s the one saying that “the one who’s dying is maki”, without even a tremor in her face to indicate that this upsets her at all.

going back to read this section after seeing what happens to her makes you think about what her real feelings were on this predicament. one of her daughters is about to be killed and the other one might already be dead, what could possibly be going through her mind at that moment?

again, we see that maki’s mom has nothing to say, even though naoya says basically the most inflammatory things imaginable. we start the arc knowing nothing, not about who this woman is or how she feels, or why she is enduring these words from naoya instead of speaking out against it. it’s the perfect introduction to the conservative nature of clans in the jujutsu world: misogyny, incest, apathy, and arrogance all at once.

also making a note of naoya’s words here, “any woman who can’t walk three steps behind a man should get stabbed in the back and die,” for obvious reasons. this is the kind of line where you read it and you’re like, ok so that’s totally gonna be how he dies, right

some more interesting notes for this chapter:

naoya namedropping toji with such confidence here. like, the black sheep of the zenin clan? is who you’re stanning? toji should be someone that zenin naoya hates, someone so pathetic as to not have a cursed technique and to have abandoned the clan and the family. yet naoya loves sucking his dick. we’ll elaborate on this later

putting this here because when i first read it i thought it was a fucking joke. like at this point i know that it’s because gojo basically had custody over megumi, who wouldve been guaranteed heir because he inherited the ten shadows technique. glad i could get that cleared up (for myself)

and then the rest of the chapter finishes of with yuki tsukumo(!) and choso and yuuji talking. when this arc starts, you barely have any of the puzzle pieces. you’re dropped right in the thick of the zenin succession, and you’ll get to learn the backstories/motivations of characters out of chronological order. pretty standard way to build suspense as far as manga writing goes, but i feel like since naoya and naobito’s cursed techniques rely on timing, fucking with the order of events makes them hit harder.

we return to the zenin plotline at chapter 148, after naoya and choso’s fight (i feel like i don’t have to talk about it that much, it’s pretty obvious the parallels being drawn there with choso’s singleminded devotion to his siblings vs naoya’s “fuck family, as long as im sitting on top” attitude) and yuuji&co’s meeting with tengen. again here is a toji stannie moment

of course, naoya loses this fight, and has to be bailed out by yuta

anyways, chapter 148: starting with a cover image of mai and maki twisted up together in the womb. we’ll come back to twins and their relevance in japanese/jujutsu society later, but for now let me just say that when i saw this panel first i hadnt read jjk yet and i was like WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON IN THIS MANGA LOL...now every time i think about this image i get dangerously close to tears. what shonen manga does to a mf

here’s the first words that we see maki’s mother say to someone directly. i’d like to note that at this point, she knows that entering the cursed warehouse is a trap for maki that will lead to her death. she starts off with a polite tone, 

but then she snaps. close up of the mouth and everything -- we see that the woman that has stayed so silent when her own daughters were being badmouthed and mistreated by her family can only raise her voice to add onto the abuse. again her motivations are unclear--we’ll spend the whole arc wondering what the difference is between what she says and what she thinks--but these words seem to imply that she’s given up. it can be extrapolated from maki and mai’s treatment in the family that their mother must’ve also been on the receiving end of this abuse. after all, she was probably groomed to grow up into this role, and been told that her only role in the clan was to produce a strong heir as to make her husband proud. on some level, she probably knows that the clan is in the wrong, but in this moment she lashes out at maki anyways. she chooses to blame maki for not following the rules than the people who made the rules unfair to begin with because maki is someone she can control, or at least somewho who she thinks that she should be able to control.

not to mention! this is the reveal where we as the reader find out that she’s maki and mai’s mother, which lets us go back and recontextualize those earlier scenes. it’s a good buildup.

here’s where we start delving more into mai and maki’s relationship. to recap, their interactions as of this chapter have only been during the tournament arc, where they had their chance to hash out their differences but didn’t really resolve anything in the end.

what this chapter (42, for reference) told us was that mai was just straight up lying during the entire tournament arc. she can repeat over and over again that she hates maki, but it’s painfully clear that she loves her and misses her. this is what mai wants to tell maki: 

the abuses of the zenin clan, the misogyny and being looked down upon by their own parents and the rest of their family, all of that mai could’ve endured, if only maki hadn’t left her. in this respect, she’s following a similar path to her mother: just keep your mouth shut and live a “normal life”, ignoring the fact that normal in this situation would be rejecting her freedom and autonomy. mai believed in the promise that the maki that held her hand and led her across the bridge made to her: that no matter how difficult the road ahead, she wouldn’t be left behind.

the goodwill event ends with mai being unable to get through to maki, and she even shamefully loses the fight on top of it all. she’s left behind by maki yet again, and that’s where we leave her until chp 148.

on the other side, maki:

when maki chose to leave the zenin clan, she also chose to leave mai behind. she chose to flee her abusive household and cut ties entirely, and this meant that she couldn’t take her sister with her either. i believe that maki saw this as her way of protecting mai; she is the one with the heavenly restriction and the lack of cursed energy, she’ll bear the repercussions of leaving while mai stays “safe” at home and has a “normal” life. 

maki believes that distancing herself from the family will protect mai and save herself. mai believes that staying together with protect maki and save herself.

where this leaves maki in the start of perfect preparation is still trying to progress down the path that she chose: get stronger, and then you can come back and destroy the clan and free mai. 

we think her arc is clear-cut like this, it’s a shonen after all. we’re excited to see the progression of maki growing stronger and triumphantly returning to beat everyone else and become the clan head.

but this never gets to happen because maki’s viewpoint is wrong. 

it’s not wrong in a way where you can blame her for choosing it, but it’s wrong in the way where her approach could never get her her happy ending: there’s no way that the zenins would accept her as the clan head no matter how strong she became, and there’s no way that mai would be completely satisfied with maki abandoning her for years, even if it was to save her in the end. now, all of this becomes frighteningly clear:

i’m not going to get that deep into the motivations of zenin ogi here, mostly because they’re pretty clear-cut:

he embodies the zenin clan tenets of tradition, abuse, and power. he can freely murder his own children because he believes that he’s in the right.

(you’ll forgive me for just straight up putting the next three pages in this post)

mai transports maki to her beach mind palace. it’s unclear how she does this, exactly--i think it’s her innate domain? she’s literally speedrunning her technique development rn. this is one of my favorite tropes of all time (parlay at the ocean mind palace!) and i literally cannot believe they did this with mai and maki i am screaming crying and throwing up

also i want to mention here that there are two toji references already -- the cursed spirit training room is probably the same one that he was thrown into as a child, and the last time there was a fight on a beach in jjk was when toji’s reanimated corpse was breaking into dagon’s domain.

mai’s line here, “i suspected this would happen someday”, means that she’s been planning this for a long time. her previous attitude was “lashing out because i want maki to return to the family”, but she always knew that this was fatalistic. just like maki was wrong, mai was also wrong. she knew that she could never get back the maki from her childhood, and continuing to chase after her, even becoming a jujutsu sorcerer for it, wouldn’t help. mai didn’t do anything wrong in the eyes of the zenin clan, she followed the rules and her cursed technique, although not powerful, was at least less of a stain on the reputation of the clan. yet she was slated to be killed anyways -- there was never any hope for her “normal life”, and she knew this, which is why she thought up this contingency plan. she accepts her death here so readily because of this, and it’s not cathartic or fulfilling in terms of her character arc at all. i was expecting to see maki and mai’s relationship develop over the course of the series, but this is cruelly subverted in a way that makes perfect sense for how jujutsu society and maki+mai’s attitudes towards life have been set up.

maki, of course, can’t accept this; she’s been running blindly towards the ending that she wanted for so long that she couldn’t have noticed her mistakes in doing so.

twins are seen as a bad omen in japanese culture, and a standard practice for many years was to kill one of the twins shortly after they were born, to “send back” the spirit so that it could return again.

what’s interesting here is that what mai’s saying is correct: the way that twins work in jjk apparently is that their cursed energy is treated as one. the conclusion that mai draws from this is that for maki to develop, mai is going to have to die. you, who probably doesn’t want mai to die, can envision another situation where maki and mai work together to overcome this cursed energy restriction, and their character arc progresses in that way. however...that isn’t...what happens...literally what do you mean the power of friendship is not gonna get us through this one...

however, her unwillingness and disinterest in progressing is not condemned, either. she gets to stick to her values to the very end, and she even gets to develop as a character as a result: instead of resenting maki for putting her in this position (something that her mother, whose mentality that she partially adopted, continues to do), she gives up her life on her own terms to give maki a chance at achieving her freedom.

what mai hands maki is a reed. the title of the arc, perfect preparation, or 葦を啣む, refers to the idiom “a goose holding reeds in its mouth”, which means to be well-prepared for something. geese crossing the ocean as they migrate will hold reeds in their mouth so that they can drop it into the water and land on it to take a break as they cross. maki has migrated home and mai is giving her the reed so that she can finish the journey. mai doesn’t need it anymore -- she’s never going back.

there’s a theory here that mai cursed maki with these last words, but i don’t know if i buy it. mai doesn’t seem like she has any regrets with her decision, with her and her sister regressing back to their child selves in her mind’s eye, the time when she was happiest. however, there is definitely the possibility that this was a curse, because well. love is the most twisted curse of them all...her final words to maki are “destroy everything”, and her final action is to create the weapon to let her do that. also! she finally calls maki big sister 🥺

and with the last of her energy, mai uses her cursed technique to create a sword for maki, then dies. this is, notably, very similar to toji fushiguro’s 500 million yen sword that he wields during hidden inventory, as if gege couldn’t hammer in the point enough. i do like the implication here though -- mai went and studied this on her own time to be able to do this for maki before she died. also, them lying in fetal position here...it hurts...

it’s a solid sendoff for mai, and a very shocking one. before this, there were sorcerer causalities during shibuya arc, so the fact that another one dies now is not entirely unprecendented. however, it hurts in that it was more “preventable” than the other two: mechamaru was a traitor and nanami had put his life on the line knowing the risks, but mai had been essentially kidnapped and brutalized while the camera wasn’t focusing on her. it’s unexpected, but it makes sense.

all of these panels have been talked about to death so i don’t think im saying anything new here, but i love talking about them so im going to do it anyways

maki continues to directly parallel toji here, something that she’s been doing from the beginning; she abandoned mai for a similar reason that toji abandoned megumi and tried to keep him away from jujutsu society. toji chose to leave the zenins entirely, but after mai dies and takes the “half” of the cursed energy that maki had left on earth, maki finally gets to use the power of the heavenly restriction to end the clan once and for all.

this is a #girlboss moment and a win for feminism but it is not a positive character development moment for maki. maki has essentially decided to spiral and has given up on her previous goal of becoming the head of the clan and making a space where she can protect people like mai. instead, she’s decided that she’ll end it all entirely, by murdering every last one of her family members, starting with her own father. only after mai dies does maki come to understand why mai wanted to “fall down the hole” with her, but she also now has to accept that this is an impossibility for her now.

this line kills me EVERY SINGLE TIME...mai really was her heart. maki understands this in the end, but like the ones that have come before her, the tradeoff for her newfound strength is the inability to protect someone she cared about.

now, finally, naoya’s obsession with toji fushiguro is elaborated upon. it seems that he had been impressed with toji from a young age, after having been impressed upon him by everyone in the clan that he was blessed, he was next in line to be the head, that the other family members were all inferior to him, those without cursed energy especially. naoya never once questions this structure, because it puts him at the top. his obsession with toji is seemingly contradictory to this, but it ends up highlighting the very real hypocrisy that can arise from such conservative and oppressive worldviews.

naoya holds his other relatives to the standards of toji, who he considers “true strength”. even though toji had no cursed energy, he was still a man, and one who could beat the other members of the zenin clan even without a technique of his own. toji is essentially who maki was striving to be since the beginning, someone strong enough to strike fear into the hearts of those that had looked down upon her, and someone who had left the clan to forge his own path without regrets. toji is allowed to be an exception in naoya’s eyes because although he left the clan, he didn’t question the structure to the point of wanting to destroy it, like maki does. toji abandoned the clan and everyone else who was suffering inside it, and that allows naoya to freely respect him regardless.

although he holds himself up to the same standards as gojo and toji, it’s clear from the fact that they’re facing away from him in the panel that he is nowhere near their level--

which, of course, leads to him being soundly beaten by maki seconds later. 

why does maki leave naoya alive before she leaves? this is the question that i wanted to answer by writing this post. maki had not been showing mercy before this (her heart was taken from her), and there’s no chance that she would extend mercy now, especially not to her awful cousin who beat her up, bullied her, and sexually objectified her and her sister. this leaves the conclusion that maki wanted naoya to die, but specifically at the hands of her mother, someone who has been traililng three feet behind naoya since the beginning of this arc.

maki goes to visit her mother, and she asks “why did you ask me to come back?” her mother doesn’t seem to understand this question, but maki is referring to the moment before she entered the weapons storage earlier. her mother knew that it would be a trap, and that her father was there, waiting to kill her and mai. maki knows painfully well the extent to which her own mother has been complicit in her and her sister’s abuse, and she asks this question now because she wants to know if her mother cared about her at all, in the end, even if she never spoke out to protect her. even so, it’s unforgivable -- she must’ve had a part in both capturing mai and luring maki to the weapons storage, and she did nothing to prevent the deaths of her children.

we aren���t explicitly shown that maki slit her mother’s throat, but it’s pretty clear that that’s what happened, given that her mother was begging for her life, and also the direction of the blood splatter (lol). destroy everything means everything, after all

after this, maki’s mother goes and deals the final blow to zenin naoya. i have to believe that this was maki’s intention in letting them both survive for long enough so that this could happen -- maybe a final chance at redemption for her mother? a sick acknowledgement that they were all in the hole together, and that if mai and maki were free now, she could be as well?

as this arc starts with maki and mai’s mother, so it gets to end with her. finally, we get to know her unvoiced true feelings: she dies happy that she gave birth to her daughters. she doesn’t have a change of heart, where she loves maki not because she destroyed the system that chained her, but simply because she was her daughter. her last action is one she makes out of her free will, ending the zenin clan completely.

“You look amazing, Y/n!” Asmo squeals as you look at yourself in the mirror. Asmo really did go all out. You look incredible, even if it was just casual wear.

“Thank you, Asmo. You really outdid yourself!”

Asmo smiled at you, “What time will he pick up?” He asked. You glanced at your D.D.D, 6:50.

“Like 10 minutes... Asmo, I’m super nervous!” You sigh as you flop onto your bed. What if Beel changed his mind? What if you embarrassed yourself or something?

“Y/n, get up! I just styled your hair!” Asmo huffs at you, “And there’s no reason to be nervous! Beel is going to love the way you look. I mean, you could wear a potato sack and Beel would still love you! But it’s not about your look... isn’t it?”

You shake your head. “What if he realizes that he could do better than me? What if he gets bored of me?” You sigh.

Asmo takes a deep breath, “That would never happen! Because it’s simply not true. Y/n, you’re great— amazing even. You have changed all of us. You made us feel like a family again. You did that. You don’t even know the power you possess. Beel would never stop loving you. I mean that dummy’s head over heels for you and he’s never loved anyone but us. If he loves you, it’s because he knows how beautiful and special you are. Y/n! No stop crying! You’re going to get all puffy!”

“I’m sorry, I’m sorry!” You giggle while gently wiping off your tears. “How do I look?” You ask.

“Perfect. Beel won’t know what hit him!” Asmo smiles, “Now come here.”

Asmo pulls you into a gentle hug. Ever since you came down to the Ddevildom, the brothers have made you feel nothing short of special. You might of changed their lives but little did they know... they changed yours too.

Your thoughts were interrupted when you hear a loud knock at your door, the loud noise causing you to jump away from Asmo.

“Lover boy is here. You ready?” Asmo asks you.

“Absolutely not... I feel a little nauseous.” You pout. Asmo laughs, “You’ll be fine! Now go to your bathroom.”

“Wait why do I have to go to the bathroom?!” You whisper-yelled at Asmo as he shoved you into your bathroom.

“It’s for the suspense, duh!” He whisper-yelled back at you, “I’ll get the door!”

He shut the bathroom door and went to open your bedroom door.

“Oh, Y/n, I thought you had changed your mind about— Asmo?” Beel looks down confusingly at his older brother. Why was Asmo in your room right your date?

“Oh relax, little brother! I was just helping Y/n prepare for your date. No need to get all jealous! Come on out, Y/n!” Asmo giggled.

Beel scoffed, “I’m not jeal... ous” Beel trails off as he sees you come out the bathroom. He always knew you were beautiful, but damn.

“Hi Beel.” You smiled up at him. He felt his knees go weak with the cute little bashful smile you gave him.

“Y/n... you look beautiful. Very beautiful.”

You feel your cheeks heat up. Geez, Beel could tell you a simple math equation and you’d still blush. You really have it bad.

“You look very good, Beel!” You yelled, “I’m sorry! I mean you look very nice, too.”

Beel laughs when he sees your frazzled face, “Thank you, sweetheart. Are you ready to go?” He asks while extending his hand. You feel like you can’t speak so you just nod and eagerly take his hand in yours.

As you both begin to leave your room, you turn back to Asmo and wave at him with your other hand.

“Bye, sweetheart. Have fun!” Asmo teases as he slowly closes your door. You roll your eyes and flip him off. A bad habit you’ve picked up from Mammon. You hear him fake gasp as you and Beel walk down the stairs.

“Sooo, where are we going?” You ask Beel as you guys walk out the House.

“You’ll see. Are you scared of motorcycles?” Beel asks you.

“Motorcycles? No, not really... why?”

Beel leads you to gate, where you see a dark blue and orange motorcycle parked.

“Well, I don’t have the best wings for flying, so Lucifer gave me this when he first came here. I guess he also knew I really liked seeing humans ride on bikes like this so he saw it as a win win... you don’t mind?”

You shake your head, “I don’t. Just be careful, yeah?”

“Of course, I have precious cargo.” He laughs as he passes you a helmet. You put it on with a small smirk, Asmo would kill you if he saw you right now. He’d say you ruined his hard work.

Beel gets on the bike and starts it. You stare at him for a second. You didn’t think he could get more attractive but he just proved you completely wrong.

“Well? You coming?” He smirks at you. You nod, and climb up behind him. You wrap you arms around his waist.

“Hold on tight!” He shouts as he revs the bike and kicks up the kickstand.

“Beel!” You yelp as you squeeze his waist tighter. You hear him chuckle.

He drives for a few minutes before he turns into a small park. The park was surprisingly full.

When Beel steps off the bike, he gently grabs your waist, picks you up, then sets you down in front of him.

“Beel! I could have gotten down.” You yelp.

“I know, I just wanted an excuse to touch you.” He grins at you, his hands still on your waist.

You take off your helmet and you fix your hair, “You know, I kind of like this cocky side of you.” You giggle.

Beel smiles, “Really? Good, because I didn’t think it was working.”

“Have you been trying to act all confident for me?” You asked.

“More like.. I’m trying to be more confident. For you.”

You smile, “Beelzebub. I like you just the way you are. I do like your confident side, but if it’s too much, be you. I like you, anyway.”

Beel blushes and pulls you to his chest by your waist.

“Thank you, Y/n. But just knowing that you love me makes me the cockiest demon in the Devildom.” He smirks.

You scoff, “Hey hey, I never said anything about love!”

“But you do!” Beel’s laugh was always so contagious, you had no choice but to laugh along with him.

He pulls away from you and lead you into the park. You see some demons sitting on the ground chatting, others playing sports, and the younger ones playing at the playground.

“Beel?” You ask him as you both take a seat on the ground.

“Yeah, sweetheart?”

“Not that I’m complaining but what are we doing here?” You ask.

He points to the dark sky, “You’ll see in a moment.”

You look up at the sky and for a moment you notice nothing. If you seconds later the dark sky is illuminated by exploding flashes of different colors. It’s such a beautiful sight, you can’t help but smile and turn back to Beel.

“Beel! It’s so pretty! But why?”

Beel laughs at how loud you have to speak. “It’s a Devildom holiday today!” He yells back. You turn back to the sky watching the beautiful fireworks display. Beel, however, continues to stare at you. You might’ve thought the sky was a pretty sight, but he thought you were the best looking thing he’s ever seen.

“You’re beautiful.” He mutters to you.

“What?” You yell at him, not hearing him well enough.

“You’re beautiful! And I love you!” He yells back.

You smile up at him, I love you too!”

Beel’s eyes widen for a second. You said you loved him. You actually said you loved him. You didn’t say you thought you did, like the last time. He feels his heart swell with pure joy. He gently grasps you face with his hand, slowly pulling you in, slowly enough to give you a chance to back out if you didn’t want this. But you didn’t back out. Instead, you flutter your eyes closed and slowly lean in until both your lips touched. His kiss was full of love and passion. It felt like forever kissing Beel.      “Itadori!” you yell, panting, cupping your hands together around your mouth to amplify your voice. He had asked you prior to meet with you for Valentines in this particular park, most likely because it was Valentines day.        You had to admit, his selection in nice places was clearly defined. The views from the hill you and him sat upon was spectacular, you could see the city in it’s whole. This was amplified with the setting of the sun, a hazy beautiful orangey-yellow gradient was all the eye could see from up here.       It was definitely worth the walk up the steep hill, and you took a much needed seat and breather on the painted wooden bench, pulling out your water bottle you take a long swig, wiping the sweat off your brow as you did so.       You took a quick sneak peek at Yuuji, who was humming a tune, earbuds in. Shielding your eyes with your hand, you leaned closer into his shoulder. His thumbs were fumbling with something, which you now realized was a Nintendo Switch.       “Watcha playing?” you ask, breathing in his scent. Remnants of candy and baked goods filled your nose.        Yuuji didn’t say anything back, instead continuing to hum and mumble a few lyrics, lost in his own world.       It was only until you impatiently tapped at his broad shoulders to pay attention to you. He jolted up, looking left and right before finally realizing you were sitting next to him. Taking a deep breath in, he cheerfully smiled before taking one of his earbuds out.       “Hey! You came early~ are you excited to see me?” he questioned, setting his Nintendo Switch into his backpack before picking up what seemed to be a bag right next to him.      “Of course! Why wouldn’t I be, baby?” you reply back, grinning, deciding to pay no mind towards this bag. Yuuji was quite popular, especially revolving sports or something along the lines of that. Many famous coaches had said that he possessed super-human strength, and he had been showered in contracts with sport teams not long after those few words.       In return, this caused Yuuji to be insanely busy with many interviews and pelted with multiple adult-y stuff to do, which had hurt you exceptionally. It greatly hindered the relationship between you two. Weekly visits turned into monthly, and you couldn’t bare to see him drown in all his work. He was much more scrawnier when you two first started dating, and you wondered how his cuddles might feel like. Something that didn’t change though, was his horrible fashion sense. Wearing a turquoise t-shirt with a lemon yellow jacket over it, you almost winced. Yuuji dressed like a 6th grader who had their mom pick out clothes for them.        “...And he annoys the absolute shit out of his co-worker, Utahime. It’s funny! I also met this guy named Nanami and I have no idea how my coach and Nanami are friends. Nanami always looks like he’s on the verge of murdering him whenever he opens his mouth to speak! Oh and also me and my coach made Valentine cards together and I worked really hard on it and I just know you’ll like it! Also-”       “Alright, alright. That’s a mouthful.” you sang sarcastically, Yuuji awkwardly laughed and rubbed his hand against the back of his neck, looking at you like you had caught him stealing a cookie out of a jar at 12 AM.       “Sorry. I get carried away a lot.” he says, peering into the bottomless pit inside the bag. You couldn’t quite see what was inside of it.       “No, no. I think it’s cute, Yuuji-san! I didn’t forget how you acted in the span of 1 month, why would I be dating you if I thought you were annoying?” hoping this’ll knock some sense into him, you closely examine his body language for any changes, hoping that went through his mind.       You had to make sure, the guy was dumb when it came to social cues.       “Ohh, really?” he looked up, pointer finger on his chin, a confused expression covering his features. “I didn’t know, I’ll act more annoying for you then!”       Smacking your forehead, you studied your shoes, too giggly to look at him eye-to-eye. “That’s not what I meant, idiot.”       “...What did you mean then?” Yuuji quizzed, tilting his head to the side. You really couldn’t tell if he was joking or not, you’d think that all sport players would be brutes and be masculine and perhaps... Not stupid? But here you were.       “No bother.” waving your hand as a dismissal of the conversation, you instead lean towards the bag he was holding, fluttering your eyelashes. “What’s this?”       “It’s a surprise~” he responded, obviously giddy. You felt yourself soften once more, how could someone be so cute just answering a question?        “Hey, come on!” tugging on his arm, you try to yank the bag away, curiosity killing you. His grasp was firm, and he laughed as you did so, it felt good to hear him laugh like that again.         “Okay, okay! Fine. Here, go at it.” handing you the bag, you practically ripped the handles off, ecstatic to see what could possibly be waiting to be discovered.          Inside was an incredibly large teddy bear, soft. The color was almost exactly the same shade of Yuuji’s, and you squeal, hugging the plush.          “Awww! This is so cute! I woulda never believed you’re smart enough to get a good gift for me!” you joked, he caught the sarcasm this time, giving you a confident grin. He liked the compliments.          “It’s supposed to be me.” placing a hand onto his chest dramatically. “I don’t know if you realized though.”          Scoffing, you put the teddybear to the side. “Of course I’d realize! I’m not dumb, Yuuji-san!”          “Why not? We could be dumb together! Also, there’s something extra at the very bottom that I think you’d like.”          Blinking, you realized that you had completely forgotten about the bag between your legs. Looking back down and rummaging for what possibly could be there, you pull out a card.          On the front, there’s a tacky lopsided heart, made with glitter glue. It seems there are also many failed attempts of starting this large heart at the sides of it. At the top, there’s a large, “Happy Valentines Day!” in red marker that was also uneven. Underneath the heart? A stick figure drawing of you and Yuuji, which was also... Pretty horrible.         Stifling a giggle, you open the card, eyes scanning the left for anything, you turn to face the right as soon as you deem it clear. That’s where the writing is.         Dear Y/N,          I love you very much and I know I do not spend that much time with you anymore but you still make me very happy. My coach was very nice and gave me Valentines day off because he felt bad.      I had to run to the nearest drugstore to get you this teddybear, but me and Mr. Coach decorated this together! Horror Movie Date (Megumi Fushiguro x GN Reader)

This is a headcanons thing, with that said, I hope you enjoy ^-^

The movie date was your idea, as mans here is too awkward to probably ever initiate something (This doesn't mean he doesn't love you, this man cherishes you, he just has a hard time showing it)

He doesn't understand why people like to get scared for fun, like, there are actual curses out there and you're trying to scare yourself more?? He doesn't get it

He eventually agrees though because you are his weakness

He's a bit worried though, as he wants you to feel safe, even if you aren't in any real danger

He sits down with you at the theatre and starts to question why he said yes to the date, as he already knew you'd probably keep him up for the next week or so after this movie

These thoughts almost immediately leave his mind as you rest your head on his shoulders once the movie starts

Thank geese the theatre is so dark, or else you'd catch yourself a tomato Megumi

He plays it cool though (We stan this man)

At some point during the movie a jumpscare happens, Megumi slightly jumped mainly from how he was too caught up in staring at you that the sudden noise caught him off guard (CAUGHT IN 4K)

However, he quickly calmed down when it dawned on him that you let out a little yelp from how the movie was, which both amused and worried him

He actually didn't mind this kind of date since he didn't have to worry about the right things to say, as the two of you were sitting in relatively comfortable silence

At some point you ended up clinging to Megumi's arm, which was, albeit, uncomfortable to say the least, due to the positioning, he made sure to eventually hold your hand to make you feel a little safer

This man is head over heels for you

After the movie he immediately asks if you're okay cause you keep clinging to his side

You say you are

This man looks at you like you just told him a bold-faced lie

You admit to being a little scared, but you'll be fine

He decides to just let you keep clinging to his side as he walks you back

During the night you end up asking him if you can sleep with him

All he can think now is 'I knew it'

He lets you sleep beside him as he wraps his arms around you to protect you and so you don't get scared again

He ends up holding you really tight and close because, although you'd never catch him dead admitting it, he got a little scared from the movie too

I don’t even have proper reasoning for this it’s just the vibes he gives off. It’s a gut feeling. Taurus: Miwa Kasumi

Nope! Although, Getou was on my shit list for a while. I kinda automatically didn't like him at first because he was a "bad guy", but that was short lived. I went from hating him to trying to force myself to hate him. It was all because of the Hidden Inventory arc (which, may I add is officially called Gojo's Past arc? I just refer to is as the flashback arc 👀) and I realized I just.... Can't hate him. For a while I was neutral toward him and then episode 7 happened and now it's game over he's pretty okay

I made my friend watch Cautious Hero: The Hero Is Overpowered but Overly Cautious without telling him anything just because I wanted him to be as distraught as I was. It worked.

I do be upset at Toji for what he did to Megs but also? Some events take place in this arc and 👀 I'm kinda hoping Megumi changes his standpoint. It'll be great for his character development, because he's been growing since the first chapter and it's cute. I can't see him completely forgiving his dad, however, we haven't gotten Megs' thought process on What The Fuck ™ happened in the current arc, and he might connect the dots and go "... Huh. So that happened."

I want to be thrown into the jjk universe, not to live out my own story, but just give everyone a damn hug and just tell them it's gonna be okay l, especially Yuji, Megumi and Gojo bc the first two are having difficult times with their emotions and the second because uhhh. I had this scenario pop in my head and idk why I thought of this, but I guess Gojo and I were fighting about something? And for some reason I was beating the shit out of him. And he was letting the blows land. Like he didn't have infinity activated. He must have done something shitty to allow himself to get beat up and somehow I ended up straddling him and I was yelling shit like "oh, now you won't talk? You won't even look at me in the fucking eye, get this shit off-" and I ripped his blindfold off and I was met with the absolute heart wrenching sight of Gojo Satoru's baby blue eyes swollen with tears. And all he did was smile and say "gomen ne" in his cute little voice (kinda childish, like how he dragged out Yuji's name in the first ep. 'Itadori yuuuuuji') and this scene rlly got me thinking what if the happy go lucky attitude is just a facade he uses to hide how broken he is-

Now that someone mentioned DDReader being a total lost cause in IKEA, imagine a concert (imagine her liking BTS and everyone didnt know about it until she mentioned she somehow got a ticket) and no one can even chaperone her anymore since BTS tickets sell out like wildfire (except GOJO, hes got bank).

Like imagine this:

"What do you MEAN THEY'RE SOLD OUT??!"

Megumi shook his head, in a somewhat lost thought as the girl joyfully held up her BTS ticket.

"BTS tickets are hard to get nowadays, especially when they only tour in one city for the whole country. It's as if you need to sell your soul for one" Megumi explained, somehow gesturing to Gojo's own ticket.

"How rude Megumi! Are you jealous that only me and dear y/n can manage to shove our ways to the top percent?" The smug face creeping in.

Megumi looked away, obviously done with the argument. However, the fuming female approached the girl in the front demanding an explanation.

She too wanted a chance to experience the magic of BTS' concerts but she later found out they sold their tickets at midnight. While Maki kept fuming her words onto the poor girl, it didn't stop her from daydreaming her future experience in a relatively huge arena, listening to the songs that plagued her mind ever since Gojo introduced it to her.

I feel like Y/N would be like Honda Thoru - she is there physically but mentally she is not. I don't know if you guys have watched Fruits Basket, but I think she's in that scene in ep 15 when Sohma Ayame appeared in the cabin and he sort of just had his hand on Tohru's head and was moving it about? And Tohru was just there smiling and not moving away from his assault? I feel like that is here in this instance

She is completely out of it - not even caring to realise just what was is it that got Maki super nervous and worried. And Yuta, who probably realised she was already in lalaland, didn't necessarily stop Maki. Cause he was sure if she didn't take her anger out on something, she was going to turn it into sparring energy. So for now he just lets her shake poor Y/N, who just doesn't notice her at all lol.

Gojo was definitely the one who bought them the tickets, and he bought the VIP tickets so they can get all the merch in the golden line. Not gonna lie, I am not that big of a BTS stan - BUT Y/N FOR SOME REASON SCREAMS 'JUNGKOOK STAN'. I don't know who he will stan honestly - I don't know the members that well to make a real judgement lol. Someone enlighten me pls.

Highkey feel like Yuji will be tasked to pick the two up from the concert, cause he's the most likely one to be awake and be able to push past the hoards of people to look for Y/N and Gojo. Also because he has the patience to deal with them, and wouldn't mind them blasting BTS in the car as they drove back to the college.
