Part 1 Strawhats x affectionate! reader Can be read as platonic or romantic Synopsis: You love giving out compliments, especially to your crew mates. Characters: Luffy, Zoro, Sanji, Usopp, and Nami

LUFFY

Likes the compliments, especially after Nami berates him.

LOVES compliments on his strength the most, but will beam if you call him smart(since no one else does TT)

Call him pirate king or the greatest pirate and he'll fold immediately.

He is fine with it generally.

Except for being called cute.

Will 1000% pout about it, especially if you call him that in front of Usopp or Chopper cause he wants to be cool yk?

"I'm not cute! What type of pirate is cute!"

Eventually will come around to it begrudgingly(he secretly enjoys it), but will also say it back to you to get you annoyed.

Backfires so bad.

Will try to compliment you back but he kinda sucks.

"You smell like the best meat in the world!"

— Or he is actually very heartfelt and deep out of nowhere

"I love how your eyes dance with the stars."

ZORO

Hates it

Ok he doesn't ACTUALLY hate it, but will act like he does

He will get all fussy about it like "Yeah, whatever." and huff off somewhere.

Will blush anytime you say anything nice about him(all the time) but NEVER lets you see it.

Actually comes to love the attention from you.

ESPECIALLY about his strength and skill.

Call him the best swordsman ever and you MIGHT see him blush since he'll be so off guard. Just might.

Will compliment you back in private, especially if you're dating.

Isn't one to focus on looks when appreciating someone, but will if you just did. Mostly points out your skills.

After some time, he won't feel embarrassed at all and will get a little cocky.

"You are so cool!" "Of course I am."

"Wow Zoro, you are strong." "Just strong? Give me more credit."

HATES if he see's you complimenting Sanji near him.

Brags to him about how cool you say he is.

NAMI

First thinks you compliment her to get out of paying her.

"I'm not going to forgive your debt by sucking up to me."

Once she realizes it's genuine, she changes her attitude.

Feels all giddy inside whenever you say anything sweet about her.

She will smile brightly to you and say thanks whenever you do so.

Doesn't have any compliments she dislikes at all

But she appreciates complimemts on her character a lot more.

Being a (former) theif and conartist makes people have a pre conceived notion of her

So saying she's nice or kind makes her feel very happy.

Will compliment you back a lot.

Mostly on skills and character.

But she does forgive some of your debt because you are kind.

USOPP

Flustered.

He starts stuttering before saying of course!

Tries to stay cool about it but say he is cute or hot and he disappears

With his self esteem, he feels like you don't actually mean what you say.

He WILL ask for assurance if your dating

After realizing you mean it, it will make him feel better about himself

Specifically about his fighting skills

He doesn't think he is that good but you think otherwise

Feels more confident the more you appreciate his talent

Brags about it to everyone

Will uplift you too

Originally to reflect your praise, but later on as actually genuine.

SANJI

Will evaporate

This man gets soooo flustered.

If you thought Usopp was bad, he will redefine the word.

He just can't commute.

Just tries to have any response but ends up babbling.

Honestly, his flusteredness is so cute.

He will get a nosebleed and may faint depending on the type of compliment.

Call him hot or cool and he will get a nosebleed or faint.

Especially if you say he is cool.

But say he is nice—

This man will freeze.

Feels like he doesn't deserve such praise. Especially from you.

Tries to reject the compliment and compliment you back.

"B-b-but Y/N dearest, you are the most kindest, nicest person to EVER grace this earth!"

You never let him reject it.

So he just ends up accepting the praise.

May cry a little sometimes, particularly if you say he is a good person.

Man NEEDS a hug TT

Starts showing off in combat and in general so he can receive praise from you.

Will do something cool and look at you like a puppy until you notice him.

If you don't he pouts off somewhere else.

He will also brag to Zoro about how cool you think he is

Wanderer

He can’t help but want to savour your touches and smiles for himself but he knows he can’t keep you to himself.

You made an effort to interact with him, even with his big ego and judgemental comments. So why would you cheat on him?? What would you even get from that?

Also, his newly received anemo vision represented his freedom, so why would he take yours?

He would still be annoyed, probably rolling his eyes, glaring and overall being grumpy if he’s jealous, he’s not just gonna act like nothing is happening!

Might make a scene out of it… overall pretty petty even if you don’t get what you did wrong.

Probably ends up yelling at the person he’s jealous of after telling you someone needed help (did he throw an arrow at some stupid guy that stalks your neighbour? Yes! Was it just because he needed to distract you? Yes! (also partly because the neighbour wouldn’t shut up about how they have an admirer to you and he wanted attention)).

Aether

It really depends on the situation but he won’t act on what he deems to be unreasonable jealously. He thinks it’s unfair to act in that way when he’s been flirted with by many in front of you, though you still try not to react.

If he thinks it’s reasonable then he will act, just briefly though.

Would probably ask for help with a commission, muttering a sorry and making sure to give you a loving hug.

Understands the feeling of loosing someone very well so he’d want to still make it slightly obvious that you’re his and he’s yours.

Rosaria

Would likely threaten anyone making you uncomfortable in anyway.

If she’s just feeling jealous due to you speaking with someone closely then she absolutely won’t make a scene, though most likely asking who they were and what their relationship is with you.

Might make an excuse to walk off with you..

Overall chill but quick to threaten or drag you off.

Dottore

Doesn’t really come out of his lab much unless going to other nations for fatui missions so he wouldn’t really get the chance to watch you converse with others.

Though If he does get jealous then he’d be slightly colder to you then usual.

Petty as heck (much like many other characters but way more in a ‘I’m-gonna-kill-whoever-that-was’ type of way).

If you were his lover then he’d think high of you, meaning he’d think of stuff like ‘that measly brat doesn’t deserve someone like [Name]’

Wouldn’t make contact with the cause of his jealously, instead gaining small details about them just in case.

Quickly pulls you off, glaring at the probably already scared person.

Acts normal once away, might be the tiniest bit more affectionate.

Xiao

Understanding yet one to quickly go take out anger on any unsuspecting enemies he can find at that moment.

If it’s someone he trusts then he wouldn’t go let his anger out, instead opting to give you more affection then usual.

He doesn’t want to loose you, since he’s lost so many people over the years.

Though it wouldn’t to be death, he wonders if it’d make him feel worse knowing that he’d lost you to emotions.

Overprotective but watches from afar I guess??

Albedo

He’s well aware of human emotions but I think he’d be a little confused at first, like why was he jealous so easily? Also how is he feeling such intense feelings?

Treats it as an experiment on himself, though still making sure he’s keeping any more-than-friendly remarks off anyones tongues (he’d like to hope that you wouldn’t do that but he’s prepared to be a barrier between you two anyways)

Trusts you but won’t hesitate to send a cheeky smile at the person as he plants a kiss on your hand and you become increasingly flustered.

Ayaka

Absolutely makes no scene, she’d just feel a bit self-conscious.

If you give her lots of love then she’ll easily forget about it (though it may linger in her mind for a while no matter what).

Kind and collective, openly stating her worries with you if given encouragement or if you’re worried about her.

Venti

Honestly quite chill depending on what’s happening.

Though no matter the situation, he’ll butt in your conversation by kissing you and hugging your waist with an innocent smile.

Can be intimidating but would only ever act that way when no others can see him act like that, therefore nobody would believe the person and he’d be known as a cheerful and carefree bard!

Childe

Absolute child about it (pun not intended 😗).

He will hang onto your waist whilst he hugs your back as he glares at his source of jealously.

Acts like nothing happened afterwards, dragging you wherever suits him that he thinks you’d like.

Won’t really think about it again, only feeling the need to protect you from harm or people with the wrong intentions.

Diluc

Calm as long as it’s not much of a big deal, extremely understanding and not afraid to let people know that you two belong to each other only and any objections will be ignored.

If it’s a bigger deal then that, then he’ll keep his calm facade and act relatively normal and understanding but with a small loss of patience.

Worst case scenario, he’ll threaten them without a smile in sight.

Won’t pay much mind to what happened, only focused on perhaps kissing you on the cheek or hand a bit more.

Zhongli

A man that is genuinely not that easy to make jealous, seemingly always calm and knowledgeable.

If in a situation that he becomes jealous, he’ll kindly ask to speak with you and then express his feelings.

Would easily sort out any misunderstandings between you two.

Leah is slowly getting annoyed with her brothers. She was cool with them liking you at first and even thought it was kind of cute, but now it's getting annoying. Sure, she sees why they like you, you're incredible, but that's the issue. You're incredible and you can do way better than anyone in her family. You deserve the best, and although she loves her brothers she knows they are anything but. Also they're taking up all your time that she once occupied

She has to get you back

Leah's going to win almost every time though, because she's your best friend and was with you first

Nick and Judd still go at each others throat

If you're ever in trouble and need help, you can count on Judd to help you, even if he acts annoyed

Out of all three, Laughing Jack is definitely the most stoked about having an affectionate and clingy significant other.

My guy has terrible abandonment issues, and he can be a bit clingy himself if the mood calls for it, so to have someone who doesn't want to leave his side? Might as well return him to heaven or something, because nothing will ever get better than that.

He is equally as affectionate if we're being honest.

Yeah, he's a big scary evil clown and all that terrorizes children but he knows how to be nice to the people he likes.

Knowing that you cling to him the way you do, it helps reassure him that you don't intend on leaving anytime soon. I mean, if you wanted to leave him, then you wouldn't be clinging to him like you always seem to do, right?

And so long as you keep clinging to him like you do, then his abandonment issues will rarely ever show up and everything will be all good and a-okay.

JEFF THE KILLER.

Hm... he can't decide if he likes you being clingy or if it annoys him. He won't lie, he loves the attention and it feeds his ego whenever you praise him or call him beautiful. You being affectionate is something he knows he likes. But he's not sure if he's fond of the clingy part or not.

When he first met Nina, she was pretty damn clingy as well, and that made him grow to hate her. To be fair, he didn't harbor any feelings for her. He does harbor feelings for you, however, and it feels different when you cling to him.

There are days when he can't stand you clinging to him, and he'll make it known in a rather rude way, to be honest. But there are also days when he wants you to cling to him because sometimes, your clinging to him feels a lot more genuine than your affectionate words.

He's very 50/50 on it, and it can change by the hour, to be honest. But he's fine with it more often than he's not. Only because he likes you.

But will he ever actually tell you that he likes it? Probably not.

It'll be fairly obvious though. Jeff may be rude, but he's not exactly the best at hiding his emotions around people he feel comfortable with.

TIM WRIGHT.

Please give him time to adjust because holy shit there's no way he'll be immediately comfortable with you clinging to him. He can barely take a compliment without feeling uncomfortable, so there's no way he'll be fine with physical affection right off the bat.

He'll tense up whenever you throw your arms around him, and it'll be very awkward because he's not entirely sure what he's supposed to do. Does he hug you back or does he just stand there? He's never been super close to people like this before, so it's all still very new to him.

If he becomes too uncomfortable, he'll let you know and will definitely put some distance between the two of you until he no longer feels that way.

He doesn't feel suffocated by your affection and clingy behavior, it's just something he's struggling to get used to because, I mean, Tim does have the mindset of 'I don't deserve this type of love' so it's very hard for him to accept it.

He'll definitely distance himself from you entirely during the events of Marble Hornets because there's no way he wants you getting involved, and he already blames himself for everything that's happening. He doesn't want anything to happen to you.

And if you're still around after the events of Marble Hornets, then honestly he would need your clinginess to ground him.

Surprise!

Pairing: Doctor!Strange x Fem!Reader

Synopsis: It's Stephen's birthday and Y/n decides to give him a especial surprise.

Word Count: 1,2k

Warnings: None, just fluff.

A/N: I wrote this in 20 minutes and didn't have the time to edit, so if you see some typos or grammar mistakes pretend you didn't see them ;)

"Is everything ready?" You asked America and she nodded, but then ran to the dining room to make sure and came back stating

"Everyone is ready."

The girl was even more excited than you and you didn't think that could be possible. However, her happiness when listening to your ideas and throughout the process of arranging everything was palpable and contagious. In fact, America was always contagious. In a good way. She had a lightness that was her own.

You smiled excitedly. "I'll go get him then. Make sure everyone stays in their seats and doesn't make any noises so he doesn't suspect anything."

At that moment Cloaky came flying towards you, it twirled in the air a few times demonstrating how excited it was and making America giggle.

"Okay. Wait in the dining room. You too, Cloaky. We don't want him to suspect us, right?"

Cloaky shook its collar and then flew back where it came from and America followed.

The room was dark when you slipped in. The curtains were drawn to block out the light and Stephen was sleeping heavily on his stomach hugging his pillow and totally unaware of anything.

You allowed yourself to admire him for a few seconds. Safe and sound at home after another difficult mission that left him away for almost two weeks. He had just returned. He arrived in the middle of the night, injured, and you helped him take a shower and took care of his injuries before he throwed himself on the bed and slept for almost twelve hours straight.

You had been planning to do something for his birthday for weeks, but you had given up because you thought he wouldn't be back in time, but when he showed up, you made a point of calling everyone and prepared everything in the morning with America, Peter and MJ’s help.

He deserved it, even if he wasn't a big fan of his own birthday, you knew that Stephen deserved to celebrate another year of life surrounded by people who loved him.

However, convincing him to get out of bed wouldn't be an easy task when he was sleeping so heavily, but you accepted the challenge and climbed into bed, squeezed yourself into the little space he left on the mattress for you and started stroking his hair, calling him softly.

"Stephen, wake up love. You've already slept a lot. I need a little attention."

He hummed and mumbled something you couldn't understand and continued sleeping. You smiled to yourself and started to shake his shoulder. "Stephen… Stephen... Steeepheeeen, I'm not leaving until you wake up and you know I'm very persistent."

He opened one eye to look at you.

"And very annoying." He mumbled, closing his eye again.

You chuckled "Well, in this we are equals. Now please look at me. I know you are awake."

He sighed, finally turning onto his back and stretching and letting out a long yawn. "What time is it?"

You combed his hair with your fingers affectionately "Almost 2pm. You slept for twelve hours."

"Why don't you lay here with me and let me sleep a little longer?" He suggested, stretching out his arm and waiting for you to snuggle close to him, but you were well aware that there were people waiting for you downstairs, so you just bent down to give him a quick kiss on the lips and stood up.

"Where are you going?" He complained watching you get up. "I thought you wanted attention."

You smirked "There's something down there I need you to see."

Stephen raised an eyebrow and you wondered if he was suspecting something, so you decided to go deeper into the lie. Anything that would make him get up and go down stairs.

"I think I broke one of your relics."

This caught his attention. He sat on the bed running his hands through his hair.

"What happened? Which relic?"

You had to try hard to hide a smirk as he immediately got up and put on the sweatpants you left folded on the bedside table.

"You'll see. But first..." You walked around the bed and went to him, standing on your tiptoes to give him a small kiss on his lips. "I want a good morning kiss."

He smiled cupping your cheeks and kissing you properly.

"Now go brush your teeth and fix your hair. The relic can wait a few minutes."

He gave a suspicious look. "Why do I get the feeling you're hiding something from me?"

You shrugged your shoulders feigning innocence, and he went to the bathroom to do what you asked. When he returned, you handed him a tee that he barely had time to put on before you grabbed his hand and pulled him out of the room.

"Sweetheart, no matter what happened to the relic..." He started to say as you practically dragged him down the stairs and strode towards the dining room. "I'm sure we can find a way..."

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!"

Everyone shouted in unison. The dining room was decorated with balloons, there was a huge cake filled with small candles and a pile of gifts on the table and all of his Avengers friends were there, including Tony, Pepper, Natasha, Clint, Steve, Sam, Bruce and Thor. Peter and MJ were also there, alongside Wong and America wearing birthday hats and whistling and clapping.

Stephen barely had the chance to react and Cloaky flew towards him, happily clinging to his shoulders.

Stephen finally allowed himself to look at you, his expressions were a mix of surprise, disbelief, but most of all, he looked happy. An open smile was on his face.

"There is no broken relic." He deduced.

You shook your head smiling and wrapping him in a tight hug. "Everything is fine and you are safe at home surrounded by people who love you, the way you deserve." You said giving him a little kiss on the cheek. "Happy birthday, love."

Stephen held you in his arms and buried his face in your neck. “Thank you, sweetheart, for everything. I love you.” He cooed giving you a kiss on the forehead.

"Happy birthday, Stephen." America said happily and he turned to hug her tightly.

"Happy birthday, sir" Peter said approaching and Stephen smirked.

"I think we agreed that you don't need to call me sir, Peter."

Peter smiled "Happy birthday, Stephen."

Stephen chuckled pulling Peter into a tight hug. "Thanks, kid."

He finally allowed himself to look around at everyone in the room.

"I can't believe you guys are here because of me." He admitted still with that silly smile on his lips.

"It wasn't like we had a choice." Tony teased, approaching. "But you deserve it, man." Tony raised his hand in a high five gesture and Stephen grimaced.

"Come on!" Tony pressed.

"I said we're not going to do this anymore."

Tony pretended not to hear and continued waiting.

"It'll be easier if you give in." You spoke softly in his ear and sighing Stephen hit Tony's hand who exclaimed happily "Awesome facial hair bros!!"

"Argh, I hate you" Stephen exclaimed and everyone laughed…

I'm writing about Berdly today

I fucking love Berdly

He is such an adorable little ray of sunshine

Spoilers ahead.

I played the snowgrave route first so I immediately was just feeling infinite levels of remorse for him, and then I just learned more about his character and JESUS CHRIST WHY IS HE SO RELATABLE HELP-

I think I'm a lot like him. I think we both kind of consider ourselves smart (I think what I want to be like varies per the situation but intelligence is definitely one of those things) but we also recognize that we really aren't and feel the need to try and keep up the facade of this intelligence. We see our intelligence as making us valuable, but in reality, and this is what I find so beautiful about how he was written, we don't need it to make us special. Also we both are kind of idiots ^^' Berdly is special because he is a kind, brave boy who cares about his friends. He might have a big ego but he is not a bad person.

I also found his loneliness relatable. His persona definitely scares a lot of people off. People REALLY don't like him (both in and out of universe). He's terribly antisocial and comically unable to read the room which are things that contribute to his "annoying" personality. Sometimes I feel like I'm worse than everyone else, too. I think I'm doing even worse in this regard because I don't really pride myself on much of anything at all... haha. Kill me.

But god Berdly's just so sweet and innocent and toby fox why the fuck didn't you add a scene where I can give him a hug asuidgjakalmgdujskndgm

I gave him the present because I knew he deserved it :) The way he reacted to that gesture really brightened my day. He was so happy. It really indicated how he doesn't get treated that well that often and that made me feel kind of sad.

ALSO ALSO the fact that he thinks Noelle has a crush on him bc she's nice to him makes me sad. Like he really thinks you need an ulterior motive for you to like him. Why :( my guess is he might not have had the best upbringing and maybe his parents weren't affectionate towards him and were downright mean to him which could explain a lot about why he is the way he is. I know Noelle was probably abused by her mom as well, but Berdly's complete inability to read the room may contribute to him not really knowing what's up, but still recognizing that Noelle needs someone to look out for her and wants to be that person for her.

His crush on Susie is hilarious in my opinion. She's the person who shows him he doesn't have to be perfect (at least his idea of perfect, which is smart) which commences his "idiot" arc which I find adorable and hilarious. Berdly makes me laugh. He's just so precious aaaaaaaaaa

Anyway I am so fucking upset that he's probably not going to be in the rest of the chapters but at the same time I think that it contributes to why Snowgrave hits so hard. You have this fully fleshed out, beautiful, cute, funny character not getting this development anymore because HE FUCKING DIED AAAAAAAAA!!! I actually don't mind when characters I like die, though, because it just intrigues me more than anything. Also I just like watching my favorite characters suffer soooo.... haha.

End berdly abuse today and y'all please for the love of god stop stereotyping him as a gross incel gamer bitch bc he's not. He's a nice boy :(

Mike doesn’t really get the idea of valentine's day, when he can be affectionate any other day.

Probably the one who scoffs at couples that exaggerates valentines day with expensive gifts etc (same Mike, same)

Double standard king, he’d do just that, just to see you all happy when he surprises you

Probably cringes at himself, but your reaction to his affection makes it worth it

If you like celebrating valentines, then so does he.

Mike will take you out to a fancy restaurant and make sure you feel special

Also make sure he has the day free so he can spend it with you.

But this is nothing unique, this man treats every day like a valentine's day and takes all opportunities to spoil you.

When you give him a gift too, he’s rather surprised.

Same with Nacho, he’s not that fond of Valentine's Day, especially all the cheesy annoying couples that make such a big deal out of it.

But of course, he will make a big deal out of it when it comes to you.

Honestly? He has two moods: 1. Planning valentine’s day weeks ahead 2. Forgetting about it and panicking about it when waking up on february 14.

He spoils you with gifts and dates any other day, but he still likes celebrating valentine's day with you.

So he feels really bad if he forgets about it, which he did today lmao

He woke up early in the morning, feeling like he had forgotten something.

Homeboy rushed out of bed to get to the store early to buy gifts

He doesn’t give a fuck it all fancy restaurants are fully booked for the night, he wants to take you there and wont give up.

Somehow finds a way to get a seat for the two of you at the restaurant

He picks you up and drives to the restaurant, making sure you have the best day ever.

But knowing him, you can sense he forgot about what day it was.

You don’t mind, though.

Of course, you give him a gift too, just to watch him blush when he receives it lmao

After a perfect date, he has plans for when you go back to his/your place. He wants to thank you for the valentines gift, after all. 😼

Kim

Kim loves you more than anything, but her job takes up lot of the time which she wants to spend with you

She doesn’t get the opportunity to take you on spontaneous dates, nor does she like it.

Kim wants to plan the perfect dates when it comes to you

Valentine's day is her way to “make it up” to you by really showing her love and affection to you

She plans it months ahead, with booking a table at a fancy restaurant, buying a thoughtful gift, and making sure she has nothing work-related planned, so she can spend the day with you, and only you.

She buys some thoughtful gift for you, maybe some jewelry, roses or chocolate etc

She doesn’t expect something back but when you hand a gift to her, she feels so appreciated.

It doesn’t matter if it’s a “bad” gift, she’ll love it either way and keep the gift close to her all the time, knowing it’s from you.

Kim makes sure you have the best date of your life, doing everything to make you smile and enjoying every second with you.

Though he would never admit it, Jesse LOVES valentines day.

Whenever he goes into stores with valentines decorations and gifts, he gets the urge to buy something

“Will you just live a little?” The annoyed look you gave Cassie did nothing to stop her from further prodding you. “It’s been what? Six months since you and Jermy broke up? Have fun! Let loose! You deserve it.” A heavy sigh passed through your lips as you tossed back another tequila shot.

Cassie wasn’t wrong. You’d spent two miserably long years with Jeremy. Two years of being belittled, two years of being controlled and two long years of orgasmless sex. The straps of your dress were pushed down and you shimmied out of them, letting Jake push the top of it further down to expose your chest.

⋆ Geto is kinda weird, because although I can’t see him hating the idea, it just doesn’t fit with his love language. Book Review 60 – The Daughter of Doctor Moreau by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Last Hugo nomination on my list! And finished it just under the wire to have theoretically cast an informed vote if I was actually a worldcon member, even. Overall a fun read, if a bit meandering and unfocused – not going to be a new favourite or anything, but it had some ambition at least, the sort of thing that deserves to get considered for awards.

The story is set in the 1870s and follows Carlotta, the eponymous daughter of a disgraced French scientist who has found patronage from a Mexican oligarch on the Yucatan peninsula, and Montgomery, the majordomo and manager of the remote ranch that has been given over to Doctor Moreau for his experimentation. As might be inferred from the title, Moreau’s experiments are on the creation of human-animal hybrids, sold to his patron as a new and more docile workforce to replace the rebellious Maya who had previously farmed his haciendas. The plot, such as it is, revolves around Moreau scheming to marry Carlotta off to his patron’s son after his funding is threatened by lack of results, and then the fallout of a revelation that is I think supposed to be more of a twist than it was for me.

The actual meat of the book is in the relationships and the environment. Particularly the relationships between Carlotta and her father, between Carlotta and the hybrids, between Montgomery and the hybrids, and of course the love triangle between Carlotta, Moreau’s patron’s son, and Montgomery that consumes the better part of the book’s middle third. The way the environment is described it actually quite well done, I think – Carlotta is deeply in love with the little world she has grown up in, and that shows in the detailed and affectionate descriptions of all the nature around here.. Montgomery, on the other hand, really couldn’t care less.

I’ve never actually read the original H. G. Wells story, or seen any of the adaptations, so all I can bring to this is the vague understanding of it pop culture osmosis has gifted unto me. Which I think is all you really need – the book takes the basic conceit and Moreau’s name from the original story, but few other setting details and essentially none of the plot. Not necessarily a huge loss – the book’s Yucatan in the midst of the Caste War is a far more grounded, interesting, and, well, real setting than Wells’ island. Still, if you come looking for real retelling or something in more direct conversation with the original you might be disappointed.

The book is not, for genre taxonomy reasons that still annoy me, a Romance, but it’s still largely about romance as much as it is anything else. All the politics and intrigue and layers of manipulation around Carlotta’s potential marriage were quite fun, even if it ended exactly as you’d expect it too.

Anyway, the book wasn’t exactly riveting reading, but it sold the period setting and everyone’s characterizations well enough that I didn’t mind the meandering or lack of surprises. And, as I’m sure was very much intentional, did make me want to go expand my knowledge of the 19th century Yucatan beyond the ‘one-paragraph textbook summary’ level.

Why do you enjoy reading Harmony fanfic?

”There is so much I could say here. I like that Harry and Hermione, beyond being good friends, are a team. They complement each other's strengths and weaknesses. I like that their friendship gradually grows and deepens over the books, though there is an implicit and very profound trust and affection between them even in the first book. I like that they try to be their best for each other, even if they sometimes fail at it. They take risks they normally may not take because they are inspired by the other.

I like the mutual admiration and understanding. Harry was isolated as a child, but Hermione gives him affection more than any other character. Hermione may sometimes be a know-it-all and hangs out in the library, but Harry will go there with her and looks up to her. He appreciates her intellect, thinks of her as the "best" in his year, and she seems to inspire him to try harder with his schoolwork. Meanwhile, Hermione doesn't understand or appreciate a lot about Quidditch, but she never misses Harry's games (even when they're not communicating well in PoA) and seems completely enthralled and enthusiastic while cheering him on.

They're not just best friends. I rarely use this word, but I do think if any relationship deserves the term soulmates, it's Harry and Hermione, particularly as they grow closer later in the books. By DH, they are fiercely protective of each other and would easily die for each other. They are an amazing duo in battle together.

And all of these things are true before we even start talking about romance.

I like slow burn romance. I like affectionate friends who realize they can be something more. I like people who learn to implicitly trust each other before they become romantically involved. To be honest, I like Hermione's intelligence. (Intelligence is hot.) But it's not everything, and again, I like the complementary nature of Harry and Hermione's abilities.

I dislike many of the standard Hollywood romance tropes that force conflict to make romantic drama "interesting." Harry and Hermione do have minor drama between them, but they learn to communicate when it's important, and they come to consensus or find ways to move forward. They try to help each other when they sense the other is upset. They sometimes get angry or upset, but they don't hold serious grudges against each other. Even when Harry is annoyed by Hermione at times in his internal monologue, he finds appropriate times to express it, or lets it go a lot of the time. By DH, they are not afraid to be vulnerable emotionally with each other. Even when they have feelings that make them want to isolate, to not be around each other, they overcome them and try to find strength together. They are not afraid to push or challenge each other when necessary. Those are serious relationship skills. Even for adults, they would be admirable relationship skills. For two teens, the glimpses into a few moments between them are extraordinary.

People these days talk about "relationship goals." I like to read about people who develop relationship skills, because those are the things that tell you a couple will last.

I honestly feel like we need better narratives and models of good, healthy relationships to show teenagers and young adults. I don't think Harry and Hermione are perfect, but they could be a beautiful example of a nuanced friendship and romance.

Most importantly, I love romance stories where it turns out that the perfect person for you in romance is your close friend, the one who has been by your side all along... and you come to that realization that true love comes out of two people who have already shown that long-term commitment to each other. What a lovely idea.”

You had said that Korrasami is a bad ship that has the same problem as Kataang.

Can you elaborate on that? Why Korra and Asami don't work as a couple?

Like Kataang, it's really one-sided. Asami is a friend to Korra, but we never see that reciprocated, and it's not like Asami hasn't been through her own mess. Also, Asami was reduced to Korra's supporter, even though she is smart, talented and powerful in her own right and deserves to have her own story play out, too. Asami really got demoted to Korra's therapist by correspondence and they called it a romance.

Aside from that, the build up just wasn't there IMO. There was a reason that Bryke had to confirm that the ending was supposed to imply a romance. I'm a firm believer that a couple shouldn't have to kiss on screen to know that they're together, and them kissing should definitely not only be the reason we know they're together (stares hard at Kataang), but there needs to be something between them that suggests as strong and deep connection, and sorry, them spending a season being pen-pals is not it.

One major reason Zutara is the most enduringly popular ship in the fandom is because the build up was there. They were mutually supportive, comforting, and even physically affectionate. Plus, the chemistry between them was palpable from season 1. If the show ended without an official ship, people would probably assume they got together later on because the connection was there. Not to mention they spent the show's emotional climax together in one of the most romantically coded sequences in children's media. Korrasami doesn't have that. Then the last season, they aren't even really sharing much screentime, and there was never any particular chemistry between them. The big romantic moment is Korra and Asami walking off into the sunset (spirit world, whatever) holding hands. As if that isn't a common platonic show of affection between friends. Female friends especially.

I think the only reason people aren't as annoyed with Korrasami is because they were the first (?) official lesbian couple in a kids' show. Which...okay, fine. I get that sometimes you have to appreciate representation when you can find it and I'm never going to tell someone they can't like Korrasami because I think it's poorly written and weak. Still, Korrasami seemed even more tacked on than Kataang and I'm pretty sure it was an attempt by Bryke to drum up interest in the show after ratings fell so low Nick didn't even bother airing it on TV.

All that being said, Korrasami doesn't piss me off nearly as much as Kataang. It's not even close. At least Korra and Asami are both grown, and Korra doesn't need Asami to play nursery maid to her. At least Asami spending so much time off screen at least implies she has her own things going on, not that Korra seems all that interested, but whatever.

What is wrong with people?? Do they forget that Harry was a child/teenager?

Towards the end of GoF, when Molly hugged Harry and he broke down, I lost it. I cry reading that scene every single time. Let me break it down for you anon, not only did he see Cedric get killed, he was part of a freaky blood ritual to bring back the person who killed his parents, who forced to battle him and used the cruciatus curse on him, he saw ghosts his parents for the first time and they spoke to him (it amazes me he was still able to focus, I would have lost it), asked by Cedric’s ghost to bring his body back to his father, landed in the school with everyone staring and whispering/screaming, dragged into a room by his professor who just turned out to be a death eater who tired to kill him, found out who the death eater was and that this whole year was a plan to kill him, sent to Dumbledore’s office to relive everything all over again when he should have been taken to the hospital wing to be checked out and Dumble-genius should have used a bloody pensive to extract the memory, listened to the minister of magic call him a liar and not believe Voldemort was back, had his only parental figure leave his side to inform the order members and said it was okay when it really wasn’t and wasn’t able to voice all he just wanted him by his side cause the boy was rightfully so fucken scared, and oh his godfather did not hug him after all of this (as far as I remember, correct me if I’m wrong). This just happened in the last couple of chapters of GoF; there was a lot more that happened throughout the book.

Throughout the whole series, I was like someone hug the bloody boy; he needs physical affection and has been deprived of it his whole life.

I don’t blame him for forgetting what happened to Ginny. He was going through so much every single year that it was hard to keep up. Should he have remembered? Yes. Did he regret not remembering? 💯. It probably didn’t help that Ginny stayed away from him most of the time because of her adorable little crush. This was the turning point in their relationship, and I think he started to notice her because she finally spoke up for herself. Harry needed to see that side of her because he needs a strong lady who would put him in his place but also understand him. Like Sam said, Sirius wasn’t the greatest parental figure in OotP. I preferred the movie Sirius in OotP, that hugged Harry and told him how much he cared for him.

Anyway, the point of this rant was… HARRY WAS A BLOODY CHILD ANON! GIVE MY SON A BREAK! 😡

I think a lot of people forget that Harry is just a kid. He’s an abused and traumatized kid on top of that.

I know when I write Harry, I write him so that his past experiences hold weight. And I’ve had people criticize me for making Harry “too clingy” or “annoying” in Brumous. The kid finally gets adopted by his godfather, is finally receiving love and affection, and finally learning what it means to have a family. I love showing his growth by receiving the things he deserved in canon.

I think people hate on Harry just to hate on Harry. All he wanted was a father in Sirius to comfort him. Fuck. I wish he had. You’re right, Sirius never hugged Harry in the books. In Dumbledore’s office I believe Sirius had a hand on Harry’s shoulder or something. Then he gave him a side hug in OOTP. But Harry needed so much more. He was starved for affection and a parental figure. While I love book Sirius, I do like how the movies had him more affectionate towards Harry and highlighted his more softer side when it came to the kid. Because while Sirius chased pigeons to make Harry laugh and sent him letters signed with a paw print and fucking tried, Harry needed more.

Literal love of my life I’m always thinking about him

Like it’s not even like exaggerating when I say he’s taken over 90 percent of my daydreams

Like I was never really into the whole mafia romance thing before

But I genuinely want this man to be happy

Like I know he’s a character but I want him to be happy and if I have to write a million fics just to make it true for him I will

He’s super sweet even if he’s still sorta a big meanie

I think it’s cute

Like YES I love the guy who is mean to everyone but me trope

Like yeah he’s not mean but he isn’t really outgoing or nice with other people

Like he jokes and is cute and UGH

And the way he actually stands up to his parents for you is literally swoon worthy

Honestly I think I skipped him the first couple times he popped up as a match

And then when I saw everyone talking about him I thought it was like

…..everyone was over hyping him

But then I got him as a match again

So I matched with him

And he’s actually so cute

And his storyline is cute

And he’s like one of my favorites (obviously seeing as he’s number three)

I now understand the hype surrounding him because I would actually kill someone for this man

And I want to fight the mother so bad

It makes me upset how he’s always like “she’s still my mom”

Like yeah but she literally ABUSED YOU?????

Like I understand completely and I know it would be hard to just turn off loving her for him

But UGH

I want permission to throw hands

And honestly not to trauma dump my mom is the same way

Like she’s not abusive but she was abused by our family when she was a kid(including my grandmother)

And she’s so fiercely protective of her and like I love my grandmother but UGH I have like a place of resentment in my heart for her because e my mom didn’t deserve any of the bad things that has happened to her

So I know firsthand what it’s like to have a parent somewhat like Johnny(my mom doesn’t have agoraphobia)

I guess that’s why I’m super fond of him? Because he’s familiar in a way to me

Like at first I was MEH about him

Then he actually started caring about me kinda

And showed me the ocean in a way that didn’t terrify me (I’m afraid of the ocean)

Like actually while this is lowkey my worst nightmare

I can breathe underwater and I’m not dying or anything so it’s less scary

But I’m still scared of the ocean

It he has a castle that I live in so it’s FINE

Literally would help me get over my fear if he wouldn’t eat me

Also I wish I could give him smooches

6)Azur Blackshade

Ghost man ghost man grim reaper ghost man

Hot hot man

Actually so interesting

And sad

I wanna know how he works

Like I wanna pick at his mind

Honestly ghost types aren’t my favorite monster types but UGH

He makes me wanna write a fanfic of a ghost love interest or something

He was my number one for a HOT WHILE

like I think he’s so hot

And his art style is attractive

Like he’s a VERY good looking man

I do like making people like me

And the fact that he was so against love in the beginning made it more fun

And then the ex appeared and pissed me off

But we ended up together

The only reason he’s this low is because I stopped playing his route bc my own character was pissing me off

Like she’s such a bitch

8)Brook

I liked the poly aspect and he was VERY cute

And I’m pretty sure he was a nurse or doctor or the person in an ambulance and I find that super attractive

And for the most part I liked the story

I don’t remember much else since I finished it MONTHS ago

9)Felix

To start off Felix and Brook are pretty much equal

Like it’s a poly relationship and I like them pretty much the same

They’re both sweet men and they’re both attractive

Even though I hated that they all abandoned me

I do think it’s attractive that they all took time to better themselves and their relationship

Like it takes a lot to realize when to step back because the situation you’re in isn’t a good one or might lead to you resenting someone

They were cool

And he was a model so obviously he was hot

Love them

10)Vile Darko

Actually insane?

I like him a lot simply because he seems psychotic

Like WHO makes someone go through insane things for money or whatever

Like actually a clown and it’s attractive

Even though I’m scared of clowns

He makes it hot AND scary

Like I’m genuinely fearing for my life (in game) but I’m also like yeah if he kills me it’s fine bc he has to touch me to do that :)

11)Enzo Gomez

I was SHOOK when I realized he wasn’t just a dog man

Like he’s an actual human that was cursed

He’s a werewolf but Doberman style

His human form is attractive

And don’t kill me but the dog form is somehow attractive(maybe it’s the teeth? Idk)

And his story is kinda sad

Well sad in that he is cursed

I’m pretty sure he was a horrible person and that’s why he was cursed

And I’m glad he has become a better person because of it

12)Lan Ying

He was up at the top before I finished his story a while ago

And now he’s back but I’m not as crazy about him because I’m crazy about tamura so I haven’t played his update yet

But I do LOVE him

Like actually a dom that isn’t an asshole

And I do like shibari and he’s nice

I hate that he ties other people up though

Like mine and only mine?

Seems like a very level headed guy and that’s very attractive

Probably one of the least toxic in this list ngl

13)Eichi Hirano

I’ve never really been crazy about him

So I wasn’t really interested in him

And obviously the sex is good for my character so I guess

I think he is the SWEETEST guy in an unfortunate position

Because his sister is manipulating him into being basically a scammer and he doesn’t wanna do it

But she gets pissy with him if he refuses

And while I know he could take himself out of that situation

It’s hard with siblings that you wanna keep in your life or whatever

Especially because they’re twins

My only problem with him is that he doesn’t have much of a spine

Like I would like him to stand up to her

But like he’s sweet and I hope the rest of the storyline is good. I kinda stopped playing it

I think he’s hot

But in reality I would hate him

I hate playing truth or dare bc it makes me anxious and I can never think of anything

I do actually really like Ezra

He wasn’t really there in the storyline

Like dare was the main character I guess out of the four

Drink and dance barely showed up

But I liked him

And I think his super power of making drinks is cool

Because I hate alcohol and how it tasted I think he would be really dangerous for me if he can make a drink that doesn’t taste like ass

And was kinda nice when we finally got to talk to him

But otherwise he wasn’t really there oof

He was more there than drink and dance but he annoyed me

HER STORYLINE IS INSANE?

Like actually I was like OOOH a cute nurse when we first started talking

Then as time went on I was like oof she has no time to herself but she’s so nice and cute

And it was just the right amount of spicy that I was like yeah this is KINDA realistic

LIKE SHE SAVES LIVES WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT FROM HER (other than time)

Then it went into a whole hostage witness protection thing

And I was like HUH

My character in this pissed me off

Bc why when she says HEY don’t say my name call me Hannah instead

My character says Naya 400999 times like MAAM

STOP OUTING HER!!!!!!!!!

Anyways she’s so sweet and deserves love and I want her to be happy and get more breaks from working

Only thing I currently don’t like is how she literally is spending our honeymoon being a nurse

But also irl I would be okay with that bc that means I can be alone for some of the day so oof

2)Eiko Suzuki

I like her more now than I did in the beginning

In the beginning she was kinda annoying

But now I’m like OKAY she deserves the WORLD

Like not because she’s a kitsune but like she is SO PRETTY

And I do like that she’s a family girl

I do think it’s weird that she was like “I don’t want anything serious”

But wanted us to help her with everything

Like I think at this point we’re something more but they haven’t made it official

Which bothers me bc I need to know I’m the only one

And her storyline is also insane

Like WTF your ex boyfriend ruined your life and is BACK to ruin it even more

AND your family can turn into cute ass foxes and you didnt use that to your advantage and KILL HIM?

Bc I really like her

She seems sweet and cool and her interests are ones that I like

Like I might not be the biggest anime fan

But I would watch several with her as dates

Like we do not have to leave the house lets snack and you can tell me all the attack on titan lore.

4)River Morales

PRETTY WOMAN

would’ve been number one had I played her recently

But I haven’t played her for WEEKS

so she went down as I lowkey forgot about her

Honestly she was cool and I love that she’s an artist

And I do like the poly dynamic

And the fact that she was REALLY honest about her feelings towards the end

Hate that they kinda abandoned me

The only downside is that she’s part of the four horsemen

The upside is that I found the dancing plague in France to be funny and as soon as I saw this party was like that I cackled

But also not really funny in theory

Also kinda dislike her bc she thought the people were having fun when she knew they weren’t

I think she would be fun to be around in small doses.

8)Eura Alabaster
