Monkey Man and why I loved the heck out of it
Tumblr media
At it's core, it's a Bollywood flick presented to the West with familiar nods to previous action films - I definitely picked up hints of Tony Jaa's influence on Asian action flicks throughout.
It's heavily focused on police corruption, something commented a lot about in India, and here, more importantly, Indian films. Just like America has its love affair with mobster flicks, Bollywood has a long history featuring films that showcase police corruption, sometimes tied into political extremism, fanatical or greedy religious leaders, and Monkey Man comments on all this as well and pays nods to that commonality. We've got televangelists and religious leaders in the states funnelling money, preaching prosperity gospel, and using it to influence politics and fund lavish lifestyles here.
Monkey Man shows this happening in India, and is filled with Indian culture and symbolism through out. The focus on Hanuman, the god and one worshiped by the strong, chaste, wrestlers, champions, and fighters. It's a common thing to have a household deity if you will. Some families might choose to focus worship on Ganesh, others Hanuman, some might do Mata Rani or Lakshmi. Here, it's the divine Vanara (monkey people race) - one of the Chiranjivi - immortals/forever-lived.
Hanuman. Themes of rebirth, common in South Asian history and mythology are present from Kid being a ringer, beat up fighter getting whooped for money to being reborn and facing his trauma through a ritual/meditate process that I don't want to get too much into to not spoil the movie. Post that, he begins his own self alchemy to really become the true Monkey Man. Nods to Ramayama, and an unapologetically Indian story featuring dialogues throughout in Hindi - don't worry, there are subtitles.
And of course a love for action flicks before it, all the way back to Bruce Lee. A beautiful use tbh of an autorickshaw (and you might know them as tuk-tuks in Thailand) which are popular in India with an added kick...I swear, that thing had to be modified with a hayabusa motor. Which is an actual thing people do - modding those dinky rickshaws with motorcycle engines, and considering they weigh nothing at all, they can REALLY FLY once you do that.
Monkey Man brings to the big screen other elements of India people might not know about, such as the gender non conforming and trans community that has a long history in India, presenting them as action stars as they go up against a system of corrupt elites oppressing part of the city, marginalized communities, and minority voices as depicted in the film. I'm not sure if people are going to get all of that without having the context, but I love that it does it without holding anyone's hands.
It's a fun action flick to see in the age of superhero films, and I say that as an obvious superhero/sff nerd. Also loved that Dev included a little bit about Hanuman's own story in the film, and the loss of his powers - almost mirrored by Kid's own loss of self/skills, strength until he confronts his trauma and is reborn, and in fact, remade (not necessarily the same). Also, the use of music was brilliant, including one scene with a tabla (the paired hand drums of south asia) - and Indian music is central to Indian stories.
This is a culture with evidence going back to the Paleolithic with cave murals showing art of Indian dance nearly 30,000 years ago. Yeah, that far back. As well as Mesolithic period art depicting musical instruments such as gongs, lyres, and more.
Indian music is some of the earliest we can find that has high developed beat and rhythm structures such as 5, 7, 9 and now the extremely common and known 4/4 and 3/4 - which so much of Western music is built upon. The foundations and experimentation of/in Jazz. John Coltrane and John Cage were heavily inspired by Indian music and incorporated a lot from it into their works. And Monkey Man blends Eastern and Western music through the narrative as comfortably as it does an Indian story in a very familiar Western accessible structure.
Dev did a wonderful job. And thanks to Jordan Peele for bringing it to screens.

Move over, LIs, I am all about MC here! Big MChead over here and I have QUESTIONS!!
How old is MC?
Do they have siblings?
Did their parents keep them out of spotlight or was MC always around at premieres, red carpets, etc.?
Did MC willingly get involved in their parents' films? Or did they try to avoid appearing in them first before realizing no one else is willing to hire them for (insert reason here)?
Related to #4, did MC have a say in appearing in the family films?
Did MC have non-acting experience, like modelling, singing, backstage work?
Does MC use their normal name when acting or do they have a stage name?
Did they go to a performance/filming school?
Did they act in indie films?
How will MCs that normally wouldn't fit into the mold of a "Hollywood Movie Star" be treated? Like queer MCs, trans MCs, male MCs who are small and/or feminine, female MCs who are muscular and/or butch etc. Or for the sake of the story, will such things be ignored, which is more than fair?
wait, we're kinda in sync cause i've got an MC article queued haha
i imagine them in the 20-22 range, so relatively young
yes, one older sister and their age gap is 8 years, so you had slightly different childhoods. when MC was only 1/2 years old is when things really started picking up in your parents' careers, so you've never really experienced the "struggle life" per se. bc of this age difference MC and their sister tend to clash, especially if you're someone who parties 24/7. but your relationship can improve or worsen even more over the course of the story
they did take you to premiers, events, galas, and such. MC quickly got used to that, because they raised MC at the beginning/height of their career, so that's definitely a world MC knows very well
all their film creds were in their early/mid teens, so i'd say MC was pretty excited to be invited onto their parents' set as a legit actor, just bc i think lots of kids would be. and it was a calculated move on their parents' part to get MC's foot in the door. so, it's not bc people wouldn't hire them, they actually got plenty audition interest, but your parents were adamant on finishing school first + it's not like they were dependent on MC for money
maybe some films they were less ecstatic about, but it's not like they were casted as the lead/main ones. it was kind of like the Apatow family with their kids, where you play a minor role, get your name out there, and then have something to show off your acting experience
they received lessons in the big 3 (modelling, acting, and singing) during their childhood!
you can decide but that doesn't mean the media/public will respect that! (lots of them drop your parents' name when reporting on MC)
nope, the nearest performing arts private school was too far, so they decided on weekly lessons, and a private school within the area, so that their busy schedules didn't put too much of a strain on family time together
yes, a couple, after highschool. some they made with friends, unpaid and for fun, and others they were hired to do. but people don't really care about all that; they hear "nepo baby" and see the family production creds, and immediately stamp you as "undeserving & talentless". so only very few people know of those films in which MC actually performs quite well in
tbh, there might be a few comments here and there, but majorly it will be ignored for story purposes, as it would be very hard to add something unique to every person!
hope this gave much more insight!!

Hi, just wanna say i am happy to found your blog and how much i love your blog. (Also ope you take request/ideas from others)
Also can you maybe do something with Slasher and an ADHD reader, where the biggest interests/all time hyperfication are Horror, and crime? [Golden retriever s.o with an big liking for horro viebe?]
Thank you, hope you have an hood day
includes: patrick bateman, charles lee ray, tiffany valentine, jason voorhees, michael myers, pinhead, jennifer check, freddy krueger, jackson rippner, stu macher, billy loomis.
warnings: none !
note: this idea is so cute ! thanks for requesting <3
🪓﹒PATRICK BATEMAN ꜜ﹒⟡﹒
your passion in the subject of true crime is very interesting to him, and he finds how much you know about it impressive
he loves that when he makes a reference to a specific serial killer or case you almost always know exactly what one it is and have more information about it to bring up
he may still try to mansplain some things from time to time 🙁 even if you already know everything there is to know about it
he’d also try to bring up gory or disturbing details that he thinks would freak you out, and be surprised (maybe even a little disappointed) when you either already knew and/or aren’t shocked by it
🛠﹒CHARLES LEE RAY ꜜ﹒⟡﹒
if you’re dating chucky, you’re in the right place tbh
you may have seen every true crime doc and every horror movie possible, but he’ll show you real crime and supernatural stuff firsthand
he’ll also recount every crime he’s ever done probably, with pride too, and he really loves how interested you are in his stories
🖤﹒TIFFANY VALENTINE ꜜ﹒⟡﹒
pretty much the same deal for tiffany honestly
especially if you’re into supernatural stuff as well, that’s where she has a lot of experience
🕸﹒JASON VOORHEES ꜜ﹒⟡﹒
your liking for horror goes a longer way for jason than you would have expected
the fact that you’re interested in that type of thing makes him feel like he won’t scare you away immediately
🔪﹒MICHAEL MYERS ꜜ﹒⟡﹒
same thing goes for michael honestly, as soon as he knows you’re into true crime and horror, he feels more comfortable
⛓﹒PINHEAD ꜜ﹒⟡﹒
the hell priest is going to show you things that are far worse than any horror movie you’ve seen or any serial killer you’ve researched
i’m sorry but more often than not anything you have to tell them or show them will not faze them whatsoever, they may even appear bored at times, but that’s also just,, how they always look
if you tell them about anything true crime related they’re probably just going to think about how trivial and silly the mortal realm is tbh
but don’t get me wrong, they’ll still listen to you and look at whatever you want to show them, they just might not react how most of the other slashers would
🩸﹒JENNIFER CHECK ꜜ﹒⟡﹒
she will listen to you for hours, and probably ask a lot of questions too
horror movie nights all the time, and every time she finds a movie that she thinks you’ll like she makes sure to show you
she has a habit of bragging a little about how much you know about true crime
“babe, tell them about that case you were talking about yesterday!”
no one is going to support your hyperfixation more than she is <3
💭﹒FREDDY KRUEGER ꜜ﹒⟡﹒
as much as you think about, listen to, and research horror and true crime related stuff, when freddy appears in your dreams it still scares the hell out of you
and he takes a little bit of pride in that not gonna lie
if he knows a horror movie you watched and really liked, he’ll try to recreate some of the scenes in your dreams just for fun if that makes sense
🛩﹒JACKSON RIPPNER ꜜ﹒⟡﹒
he’d watch so many true crime documentaries with you
and considering your interest in that subject and his job, you’d both find it kind of ironic that you ended up together
his job can be hard on him though, so don’t press him too hard for details, sometimes he needs a bit of a break from the subject of crime and horror because that’s what his livelihood revolves around
🥩﹒STU MACHER ꜜ﹒⟡﹒
he is going to make a lot of jokes like all the time, but trust me he finds your true crime infodump very interesting
also your golden retriever vibe goes really well with him, because he’s similar, your easygoing and good vibes are really attractive to him <3
📞﹒BILLY LOOMIS ꜜ﹒⟡﹒
you and billy are so cute together imo
he’ll pick your brain and ask questions about everything you tell him about, he’d want to hear every detail
and he’s definitely mentally taking notes when you’re infodumping btw
to you it looks like he’s just really paying attention because he loves listening to you, and he does <3
but he’s also making note of everything so he can avoid what’s gotten people caught before to make sure he doesn’t make the same mistakes, and probably getting some inspiration

Books of 2024 (2023 or close to it)
Thank you for the tag @barbex it sounds like a fun one hehe. 9 books should be listed that were read in the last 12 months (or alternatively liked when you read it) if I'm right. And when I read the rules I had the same reaction: mind went blank on if I ever read a single book lol. Luckily I keep track of my reading because I like watching them back.
No pressure tagging: @aninkwellofnectar, @bloodlessheirbyjacques, @the-void-writes, @circa-specturgia, @aalinaaaaaa, @dyrewrites, @italiangothicwriteblr, @cherrybombfangirlwrites, @blind-the-winds and anyone who wants to join.
All of the listed were read last year and which I liked especially.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When The Stars Alight by Camilla Andrew (@aninkwellofnectar). Bi MC, gaslamp fantasy, gothic, court intrigue, delicious spice
You've already seen this many times on my page, because I really enjoyed this book and it was a window to many things I didn't know I'd enjoy in a story. So many beautiful description, beautifully emotional and sexy sex, rarely seen complex character dynamics and so much mouth watering food.
Éjféli Iskolák (Midnight Schools) by Attila Veres. lovecraftian horror set in Budapest
It's a horror short story collection by a hungarian author who I got recommended by a collegue. Attila Veres has a talent to capture that melancholic, sometimes surrelistic feeling living in Budapest which makes his work so authentic. But also very Big Ew for all the horroristic shit he created (in the best way.) My favourite one was the 'Porn After Midnight'.
Yumi and The Nightmare Painter by Brandon Sanders. M/F romance focus, sci-fi/fantasy, anime-esque
You all know I'm a Sanderson trash. And the fact I, the slowest reader on the earth, read this book in two days, proved that very much lol. It felt like watching an anime, I swear to god. There's magic, time travel kinda thing, pretty innocent humour, loads of painting in it.
A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickenes. christmas nostalgia, historical fiction?
We all know this, but I'm very behind on classics book-wise so I began to catch up last year. Espceially because I love the animated movie so much. It was a lovely and educative read.
Y/N by Esther Yi. litfic, kpop fandom and industry satire basically, comteporary
It was one of my favourites from last year tbh, because I couldn't put down the damn e-reader. A very strange little read, 100% unhinged, but made me realise I might enjoy litfic, so I'll read more this year. Also, the story is not "summarizable" but the fact that this is the first two review on GoodReads tells a lot I think: reading this feels like that one night when i accidentally smoked weed for the first time I sort of feel like I just hallucinated this entire thing Yeah.
Even Though I Knew The End by C. L. Polk. F/F romance, fantasy, novella
Lesbian magical detective. Done, sold. I wanted to read this a while now, and it did not disappoint. It gave exactly what it promised. Fast paced little adventure with some humour and a lovely couple. Not a life-chaning read but as I mentioned, it gave what it promised. I enjoyed it anyway.
Interview With The Vampire by Anne Rice. M/M romance kinda, supernatural, philosophical
Finally started to read the books my all time favourite movies are made of. Loved every bits of this, though sometimes it got way too wordy or I don't even know what. Overall though, it got me. Full of contemplation about human nature, God (though I could do a bit less without that) and death, plus the iconic vampire husbands and their arguments. It's just a real long broody monologue of Louis tbh. I'm fine with that it seems, though.
Legend & Lattes by Travis Baldree. F/F romance (not focus), cosy fantasy
Read pretty fast too. It's very much what it promises also. Cosy, and relaxing, and endearing. Love the concept of how a stoic warrior woman can settle finally and do something other than fighting. It was cute.
Tress of The Emerald Sea by Brandon Sanderson. M/F romance (not that important i think), cosy fantasy, Princess Bride-vibes
Yes, I got all the secret project, because of course I would. This one was also something like Legends & Lattes imo. In Sanderson style tho. I'm also loving when the narrator is a third person telling the story. Those are always fun. Oh and the story had many cuteness, humour and Our Flag Means Death kinda pirates.

Hi! I am fond of your fics, ty for blessing the fandom with such content :D /pos
As for the request... How about a short&sweet movie!goldenheart thingy with precanon transgender Ballister being a bit self-conscious abt his body and Ambrosius reassuring him (goes perfect with your body worship hc tbh)
Might be T, might be E, it's all up to you XD
(Should have I really turned the anonymous option on? I feel like it's really obvious who I am atp)
Anyway I hope you're having a great day and you get paid a lot of money B)
Hi hi yes finally finished this one, stranger!!! I am so glad you enjoy my work and I hope you enjoy this one!!! Ambrosius loves his man so much stg
Cw: referenced sex, some gender dysphoria (obviously) and minor internalized transphobia
Ballister admired his facial hair in the mirror. He'd been terribly proud ever since it had started growing in, and he'd cut his hair. He was grateful for the resources available to him that he never before would have been able to access as a kid on the street. Yes, his face was finally molding into a shape he liked to see.
His body was a bit of a different story. He was elated, of course, when he got approved for top surgery, but the scars were still very visible against his skin, they hadn't faded yet. He hoped that his chest hair would make them harder to see. And all that's not even mentioning that he'd not been able to get bottom surgery yet. The damn Institution said it would interrupt his training too long because of the recovery time.
It's not like it would matter. Ballister could avoid mirrors for the rest of his life if he needed. He'd never had to deal with his own body much. He was very good at distancing himself from it. That is, until, his best friend turned into his boyfriend and that relationship turned from innocent to sexual very fast.
It was hot, and fun, but honestly a bit awkward and miserable at first. Ballister thought Ambrosius was straight at one point. If a straight man liked him, what did that mean? Did the person he trusted most in the world see him as something other than who he really was? Then he found out that Ambrosius was gay and that was somehow just as stressful because what if he wasn't enough? What if his partner was biding his time until Ballister got surgery? What if he didn't like him as he was? What if he never did?
Ballister startled when Ambrosius entered the room, his lover's eyes immediately widened and he bit his lip. “Hey, sexy.” He slinked his way over and nibbled Ballister's neck, slinking his arms around his waist. “How lucky do I have to be to come home to the hottest man in the world topless in my dorm?”
Ballister snorted, as if it wasn't practically their dorm. He slept here and half his stuff was here, because this dorm was much nicer than his. They used his dorm as storage and a hangout to play video games in. They actually lived here.
“I'm happy I can be topless in your dorm, finally.” Ballister chuckled with awkward intonation, and Ambrosius kissed his shoulder. “I'm happy too, that you feel comfortable doing so. But you always could if you'd wanted, your body was never and could never be a problem for me. I just want you to be happy!”
Ballister smiled. “Really? Even if– Even without– I don't know. I'm masculine enough for you? I mean, you're gay, and you've known me since we were kids.”
Ambrosius gave him a look and caressed the stubble on his cheek. “I’ve always liked you. Gave me a whole crisis about my sexuality before you came out, because I exclusively liked men except for, I thought, you. Turns out my gay ass knew something about you before you told me.” He chuckled. “You've only gotten hotter, but you've always been perfect, and you'll always be more than man enough for me. Plus, no offense, Bal, I don't think you've got quite enough in the way of feminine wiles to drive my man-loving ass away.”
Ballister glanced at the mirror and burst out laughing at the sight of his muscular, bulky, hairy body contrasted with the phrase "feminine wiles". It wasn't that those things couldn't be feminine, but they certainly weren't in his case, and the idea of anyone seeing, let alone being attracted to him as a straight woman seemed a bit ridiculous upon reflection. “Alright, alright. Thanks.”
Ambrosius grinned and kissed him, fingers fiddling with the waistband of his shorts. “Now that that's settled, would you be interested in me sucking your dick and fingering you? I've got a couple hours before my next class.”
Ballister smirked, “Only if I can suck your dick and finger you.”
Ambrosius pretended to be contemplative for a moment despite the excitement that flashed behind his eyes. “Hm, yeah, I suppose I'd be amenable to that.” He grinned and in another instant, their bodies were melded together, just two young men in love.

Surprise! Another horror movie cliché has emerged, and there's a third accomplice involved in Whistling Night!! If this were the case,
Some thoughts on the whole idea under the cut, with some heavy spoilers for one of the endings as well \o/ Feel free to reply with other suggestions or why you chose one of the poll options
A few things can really tickle the possibility. I think the one most players/viewers hone in on are the explosives? Then again, they could learn to make one rather than have a supplier.
Though the bit near the end of the game where The Whistling Man locks Forrest from entering the basement on his way back to the DJ Booth - it can just be a video gamey thing that's choreographed a lil silly (and i'm all for simplicity as well), but it's fun to think that maybe…Forrest could've been in close proximity to TWO whistling men that night 👀
There's also the ending where Henry shows remorse, Forrest's dialogue implying he's under the impression Henry might not have actually killed anyone yet. I don't know how likely it is that Henry hasn't?? But if Henry can actually be steered into a reluctant accomplice narrative, then maybe someone more willing to do the slicing has been working with Marie all along!
Tbh it's all just fun conjecture, not really something I'd push as close canon, but it can be cool to think about nonetheless

I know that Barbenheimer was mostly a meme but I did actually go watch Barbie and Oppenheimer on the same day and... They kind of actually complemented each other really well. I'll elaborate on that, but major spoiler warning: stop reading right now if you don't want spoilers for either movie.
Oppenheimer, by itself, was about the atomic bomb and the man who led its development. But in the context of Barbie, Oppenheimer was about what a world ruled by men has done. And, just like in Barbie, the fragile male ego was a big motivator of evil in Oppenheimer. I know that it's a bit silly to compare Barbie to a very serious movie based on an actual historical tragedy, but these are just my thoughts after watching them.
In Oppenheimer, the movie spent a lot of time on the development of the atomic bomb, of course, but also a fair bit of it focused on Oppenheimer's life. In the last 45 minutes of the movie we slowly found out how Lewis Strauss tried to destroy Oppenheimer's life and reputation. And that wasn't because of his involvement with the bomb: no, it was because Oppenheimer had been mean to him. Strauss had all these other reasons he claimed, stuff about communists and whatever, but really the reason was that Oppenheimer had humiliated Strauss.
And in Barbie, Ken turned Barbieland into a patriarchal nightmare world because Barbie had been mean to him. He had all these other reasons too, like finding horses cool, but the real reason was that Barbie had always taken him for grantedand always left him out. It's different from humiliation, but still. Idk, I see a parallel.
Barbie made fun of the meeting room full of men in suits talking about empowering girls (by selling more Barbies). In Oppenheimer, we saw meeting rooms full of men in suits deciding what city gets obliterated, making plans on whether to make bigger bombs or try to work on diplomacy, and so on. The depiction of what happened in Barbieland when the Kens took over - a world where a bit of jealousy, tiny bruises to men's egos, can start a war - wasn't so far off from reality. In reality we have big important men in charge making big important decisions about who lives and who dies - and sometimes the real reasoning is as superficial as "I had my honeymoon there."
Oh and about the women in Oppenheimer: I can only recall five. There was a communist seductress, an alcoholic wife, a friend's wife, a secretary and a female scientist (and some unnamed students but I won't count them, they were barely characters). The one feminist quip the scientist lady made does not make up for the fact that frankly, the women had zero agency. One got killed, one just turned a radio on once, one was just someone to cheat with, and one was passionate and made some great points in a crossexamination (but then that amounted to nothing). This, sadly, is historically pretty accurate, so I won't blame the movie for this. Tbh I'm happy about any little bit of presentation women in science get, and I liked the little quip from the chemist. But still, not a lot of women in this movie.
So, to anyone who might want to complain about the representation of men in Barbie (a movie that is just as much about a woman as Oppenheimer is about a man), I'd like to point out that Barbie had far more (and more complex) male characters than Oppenheimer had women. There were Ken, the other Kens, Allan, the Mattel CEO, Aaron Dinkins, Sasha's dad... and the men in Barbie actually got to do things and affect the course of the movie. In Oppenheimer, just like most movies, women were just a fun accessory with zero real impact.
That's my two cents. Overall both movies were good, very much recommended. But don't go into Oppenheimer expecting much more than a biography. (And if you watch both, watch Oppenheimer first or you'll just ruin the good mood gained from Barbie).

sou !! hello !! this is also random and specific but i saw the datekou headcanon post and i was wondering. might you have any inarizaki road trip hcs?
i didn't until you asked me so LET'S GO
oh god you thought dateko was bad??? they were only stuck in the car for thirty minutes at MOST
(or something idk i haven't quite mapped out their geography yet but miyagi is a coastal prefecture and sendai isn't like SUPER far inland, so i'm just making assumptions out here)
but anyways. kurosu is driving obviously as much as he moans and groans about it
shoutout to the coaches btw they are CARRYING these headcanons
realistically i guess they'd road trip to another school for a training camp or like idk. maybe hot springs for some r&r bc inarizaki def has the budget for it but in my heart they road trip to suna's hometown during one of the breaks so suna can see his family <333
i guess it also kind of depends on WHERE in hyogo and aichi they are but we could get a solid 4-5 hours of driving if it was from, say, asago to tahara
kita makes a list of all the snacks everyone wants and rounds up aran, oomimi, and akagi to help him raid the market/convenience store like the old hunter-gatherer days
they end up with two massive tote bags of drinks, chips, cookies, and other miscellaneous snacks and one cooler for things like puddings and cakes and whatnot
oomimi sits shotgun because kurosu needed someone to help with directions and everyone else was on "make sure the miyas don't kill each other before we get there" duty
they all thought that kita was brilliant for making atsumu sit in the back and osamu up front because even tho they're separated the twins will NOT stop bickering and trying to throw random pieces of trash at each other. poor riseki gets caught in the crossfire the most often
they all converged to make one giant road trip playlist so you've got the weirdest mix of pop rock/bubblegum/k-pop/city pop, lofi, indie soft rock, show tunes and soundtracks, and more
(i named those genres with certain charas in mind so like. have fun figuring that out!)
nobody's willing to take a nap in fear of what the twins might do to each other when they're not looking
they play really stupid games like the alphabet-chain game and i spy and even try for a few rounds of truth or dare because, hey, there's nothing like being stuck in a car with your fellow teenagers for four hours to set the mood for emotionally vulnerable bonding time, right?
anyways. everyone learns that gin is afraid of heights and all sorts of horror movies, akagi would like to get his ears pierced some day, kosaku got rejected in middle school in front of his entire class and has refused to fall in love since, and suna takes pictures to capture the memory of a place he does not want to forget
(sorry i'm being emo about suna missing home again i'll stop)
kurosu is sweating BUCKETS in the front seat btw. "oh my god what do i do with this information am i supposed to talk to them i'm their TEACHER i'm supposed to guide them i do NOT get paid enough for this - "
a shame, really, considering inarizaki could definitely afford to give that man a raise
it's okay they get some really funny dares like daring gin to text his crush a totally random and weird question
(and thank god atsumu has his phone tucked away in his bag)
there's not a whole lot of dares they can do in the car tbh so they get really creative like daring osamu to eat this absolutely evil concoction of mixing tiramisu pudding into a bag of spicy chips and eating the whole thing
he does. nobody knows how he survived it
and then riseki dared both osamu AND atsumu to shut up and sit down and not even so much as GLANCE each other for the rest of the trip
this was at, like, the 1.5 hour mark btw
and okay he didn't say it EXACTLY like that because riseki is a sweet respectful underclassman but that WAS the closest to snapping he's ever gotten
they do stop occasionally here and there to get out and stretch their legs, but this makes their trip even longer bc it takes like thirty minutes each time to wrangle everyone and get them back in the van
also akagi is trying out his most terrible pickup lines. or antipickup lines. either one works
akagi: "are you lactose? because i can't tolerate you ;)" aran: "PLEASE, MAKE HIM STOP"
the only reason aran feels like he isn't completely suffering is because gin is sitting next to him and gin is kind of soothing like a cute pet would be. not that aran is thinking of gin as a pet nooooo ahahaha that would be weird
meanwhile gin is wondering why aran keeps trying to feed him crackers
they finally get to suna's hometown after being on the road for SIX AND A HALF HOURS
and while everyone is happy to be outside soaking up the sun and fresh air, they're all going to miss the bonding of being stuck in a van perhaps just a little bit
it's all right, they've got the return trip to look forward to
(made 100x worse when akagi busts out a drinking game and proclaims they should play with juice boxes, but that's a story for another time)

The Darkling
why I like them: could have been SO GOOD in theory okay? I will never shut up about this because "character who everyone thinks is evil is actually just the victim of a smear campaign and some really bigoted propaganda" is SUCH a good character concept and I wish darkling fans were right about him because it would be so fucking cool and aesthetic
why I don't: he uh. he isn't that. he could have been so fucking iconic and instead he was just a vicious murderer. who grooms teenage girls.
favourite episode/scene: LOVE the bit where alina stabs his hand in s1e8. tbf that's more of a fav alina moment than anything else lmao, let me think... okay fr I love the "fine. make me your villain" scene bc it just really showcases who he is as a character and how he sees himself (hint: those two things are not the same)
favourite season/movie: imo he's better written in s1 of the show than in s2, idk though. and I do love his story in the kos duology lmao
favourite line: that one bit in rule of wolves where he says "everything I have done has been for ravka" because it's so clearly Not True and yet.... he clearly thinks it is.... so where does intent stop and impact begin...... it's deep okay
favourite outfit: purely for shits and giggles I'm going to say his black kefta in s2 where there's bits of gold bc I loveeee people being haunted by those they've wronged and I think alina haunting him really fits into that theme
otp: no thank you! in all honesty he prob could have been Fixed™ if he'd had a genuine relationship at an earlier age but he didn't so I refuse to inflict him on any other character. darkolai is interesting to consider though bc I feel like the ways they see themselves clash so heavily.... it's about self image and it's about villainy and law and justice and power and and and. they would Not be a good relationship but I think they should interact more for the Narrative
brotp: his sister ulla! they'd have such a fun sibling dynamic lmao I think it'd be sweet
headcanon: tbh I don't tend to think about him much beyond the big narrative stuff so I'm struggling to think of something that fits the genre of "headcanon".... but let's humanise him a little! I bet he reads really literary fiction and gets ever-so-slightly pretentious about it lmao
unpopular opinion: is it unpopular to say that despite his original good intentions he's a bit of a dickhead and not as smart as he thinks he is? in some corners of the fandom it totally is but idk
a wish: at this point there's not much more that could be done with his character beyond what's already been set up (him being mercy killed so he's not suffering in the thorn wood for all eternity) so I'm going to say that I hope his stans get better reading comprehension bc dear GOD some of the takes I see (posted in the alina tag btw I'm not deliberately seeking them out) are absolutely horrendous. is that too salty? perhaps. idc though it's my blog and darkling stans are free to block me if they don't like my takes
an oh-god-please-don't-ever-happen: I swear if he goes NEAR alina genya or zoya again I will reach through the fourth wall to kill him myself. only half joking btw I'd be so pissed. imo they've all had the closure they need narratively and for him to seek them out again would be a dick move of the highest degree
5 words to best describe them: used to have good intentions. that might be cheating but idk if I can pick 5 random adjectives lmao
my nickname for them: I call him darkles sometimes (bc it's funny and also I think it'd piss him off if people called him that in-universe) also a lot of less positive nicknames ("that prick", "shithead" etc) but idk if that counts

Could you do a Liv McKenzie x fem reader
where reader is really into scary movies and finally convinces Liv to watch one with her but then like halfway through it freaks Liv out a bunch and then reader comforts her because she’s cared and they kiss or sm?
ofc!! thank you for requesting liv, she’s so underrated and I love her sm <3 it’s honestly criminal that there’s barely anything written for her tbh
I realised when reading over this that it might not be exactly what you wanted, but if it’s a problem feel to re-request or send me a message and I can always try and rewrite it :)
MOVIE NIGHT || LIV MCKENZIE X READER 𖤐₊˚.

warnings: swearing, descriptions of gore (nothing too graphic)
⨯ . ⁺ ✦ ⊹ ꙳ ⁺ ‧ ⨯. ⁺ ✦ ⊹ . * ꙳ ✦ ⊹
“Shit!”
You can’t help but giggle as Liv just about jumps out of her skin again, almost spilling the contents of her popcorn bowl all over the pair of you.
“Do we have to watch this?” She whines. “It’s disgusting! I mean look!” She winces and gestures to the screen. “Do we really need to see her insides like that?”
“Probably not.” You agree with a shrug. “But it makes for good entertainment.”
“Good entertainment? God, you’re so weird.” Liv replies, grimacing. She’d never understood your fascination with horror movies, just as you’d never understood why she couldn’t get into them despite how obviously fake they were.
It must’ve just been another example of something that just worked about the two of you, your different nature making you all the more compatible with each other. You found that you tended to gravitate towards Liv compared to your other friends - she was just easy to be around. You’d never understood why Mindy would claim that she was the “boring one”, because frankly? You’d rather hang out with Liv than any of the rest of them. She was fun and easy to talk to, and your scheduled movie nights had quickly become the most anticipated nights of your week.
“Hey, come on!” you exclaim, launching a piece of popcorn at her head. “You picked the movie last week!”
“Yeah, and we watched Tangled! A very non - scary movie! Come on, you know I don’t do horror - why did I let you talk me into this again?”
“Because,” you say, reaching over to muss up her pink hair. “you love me too much. Now just watch it Liv. You never know, you might actually enjoy it.”
She simply mutters something inaudible under her breath, sinking further into her spot on the couch. She stays silent for around another ten minutes until woman on screen floats into the air gracefully as her family looks on in horror, the music reaching its crescendo as her limbs snap in all directions and blood pours from her eyes. Her screams echo throughout the room whilst Liv gags dramatically and buries her head in your shoulder, her pretty pink hair falling over her face.
“You alright?” You ask her.
“Totally.” She says with her voice muffled, giving you a shaky thumbs up. “I’m totally cool.”
“You’re not gonna throw up on me, are you?”
“Definitely not,” she replies.
A second passes.
“Probably not.”
You pull away on instinct, almost feeling bad when Liv about falls onto the sofa without your support. “Liv, you know it’s all totally fake, right?”
“I know,” she answers with a pout. “That doesn’t mean it isn’t freaky as shit though. It’ll be in my nightmares for weeks!”
Your gaze softens as you scoot closer to Liv, your legs becoming messily intertwined as you do so.
“I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have made you watch it,” you sigh.
“No, it’s okay. You love this movie, so-“
“Yeah, but I love you more,” you interject. You say it gently, but there’s no undeniable force behind it. Because you mean it. Liv meant more to you than she would ever know, and definitely more than some stupid movie. She had to understand that, surely?
“You do?” She replies quietly, a small smile playing on her lips.
You clasp her hands in yours. “Yeah, I do. And don’t you forget that.”
Liv simply looks at you with bright eyes, her expression unreadable even to you. You realise how close of you the two of you have become on the couch and you look away from her for a moment, your tongue running over your suddenly dry lips before you continue.
“Try to take your mind off of the movie. Come on, think of happy things. Puppies, rainbows, whatever it is that floats your boat. You got something?”
Liv pauses for a minute in thought before nodding slowly.
“Yeah, actually. I do.”
“Great. What is it?” You smile.
“It’s nothing”, she says almost wistfully, her gaze avoiding yours.
“Aw, come on Liv. You know I’m not gonna judge you!” She couldn’t have possibly thought of something that bad, and you couldn’t think of an instance where the two of you ha kept secrets from each other.
You see the moment when Liv gives in, a nervous, sheepish smile tugging on the corners of her mouth. It’s then that she leans forward and he brings her lips to your ears, her hot breathe against your skin making you shiver.
“Well then,” she murmurs, voice low. “I guess it’s just easier if I show you.”
And then she’s pressing her lips to yours, and your breath catches for a brief moment. Because your best friend is kissing you, properly kissing you, hesitant and delicate and somehow completely perfect all at once. And it shouldn’t feel this right. But it does, and once you regain your composure you’re returning the kiss, your hands instinctively reaching for Liv’s neck. She becomes more confident with that, the kiss turning ever-so slightly more heated, her mouth more willing to explore yours.
You can’t help but wonder why you haven’t been doing this forever.
After what feels like an eternity, you pull back for air and can barely suppress your grin when Liv sighs quietly to herself.
“You were right,” you breathe out, “that was much easier.”
Liv just laughs that beautiful laugh of hers, her brilliant blue eyes lighting up brighter than you’ve ever seen them before.
“So,” she speaks finally, “Do you wanna watch another movie?” She picks up the remote to scroll through the options but you push it back down, causing her to look up to meet your own intense gaze.
“Not really,” you murmur, leaning closer to her once more. “I think I’d rather just kiss you again.”
And Liv is more than happy to oblige.

MY 3 REASONS. | my descendants dr version
little note: this is just a fun motivational post for me to get back into my dr’s more and present it to you as well!! i’ve seen it go around shiftblr and i’m not rlly sure who started it but creds go to the person who did!! also i feel like people don’t really read long posts on here but oh well
THE PLACES.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
first reason: this might be my favorite part of any dr i’ve ever had ever. i’m a big disney kid at heart and disney channel basically raised me. so makes sense i’d have a related dr. i’ve basically incorporated places from different disney movies and shows (also disneyland!!) into my dr — this is part of the reason why it’s my comfort dr as well (the idea comes from tiktok btw it’s not mine but i find it super cool!!). i can’t wait to go to these places with my friends and family ❤️‍🩹
i’ve also transformed some of them for example, the v8 café became a roller rink/café soo there’s that LMAOOO
THE NEW KIDS.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
second reason: i wasn’t about to forget the core 4 now. they literally are the most supportive friend group i could ever have. they’re everything. what more can i say, i’ve found some of my best friends. also i gotta say, i don’t agree with the way they were brought up in the movies, i felt like auradon really didn’t give the isle any chance for redemption so in my dr, auradon has an efficient prison system that aims for a fair chance for all so it’s different cuz we understand nuance here, not everyone is all bad & not everyone is all good. (it means the isle isn’t as impoverished and unsafe as it is in the movies)
i don’t have any other ways to describe the auradon and isle of the lost dynamics better than a sims 4 comparison so it’ll have to do: auradon is giving britechester and the isle has grown to have a foxbury vibe (iykyk)
MY BOYFRIEND.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
third reason: i’ve seen someone on here compare their s/o to the "final push" in a shifting attempt. they’re not the entire reason why they’re shifting to their dr but still, they’re the element that helps them get there.
and tbh i agree! more seriously my s/o is purely a childhood crush that i re-discovered while i was deciding to shift to this dr. and he really adds to my life there. he is literally everything to me. everytime i feel bad or stressed literally just THINKING of him soothes me. and poor baby he’s been so under appreciated in the movies, i had to restore his status as the smartest, most compassionate mf in the whole kingdom ‼️ white boy of the CENTURY in my book 💁🏾‍♀️

got tagged by @wanderingblindly, thank you my beloved <3
what colour are your eyes?: a mixture of blue, green and grey that looks puddle-coloured most of the time.
tell me about your pets/your dream pet: after 15 wonderful years, our family dog paul (i named him that when i was five lol) unfortunately passed away in august 2023, i loved that dog more than most people. (there were some pictures of him here, but i got nervous that someone i know might see this so i removed them lmao). i'd love to get a dog or a cat at some point later in my life, but not now or any time soon.
share some interesting fact about yourself: i'm genuinely incredibly boring, so much so that i had to ask for help to find an answer here. the council decided on the fact that i know how to ride and own a motorcycle and am also a member in an mf in my hometown.
what was the first fandom you were a part of?: i guess the first time i was properly involved with fandom in any capacity was during my teen wolf days.
do you have any phobias?: i don't know if it's bad enough to be considered a phobia, but i'm terrified of heights. there have been several instances of me breaking down crying despite trying to keep it together while being in very high places (usually while having to climb dodgy stairs in very high buildings, among other things).
are you a picky eater? if so, what food can't you stand?: YES! and i hate it because it's so so limiting and annoying. i am incredibly sensitive regarding taste and texture and i have to physically force myself to hold back visceral reactions to foods i don't like. it'd probably be easier to list the foods i can eat tbh.
do you eat the burger and fries at the same time or one after another?: first some fries, then burger, fries, burger, fries, finish the burger, finish the fries. anything else is weird (what the fuck do you mean you eat them completely separately, liquid???)
winter or summer: winter all the way. i sweat easily, my body generally doesn't cope well with heat and i prefer bundling up and being a little cold over feeling too warm.
favourite fanfiction tropes: i LOVE a good au, any au really, but especially the cute ones. i'll read almost anything at least once and so there's just too many things i have read and enjoyed to list here. also, anything with an enemies to lovers situation. i am a sucker for that.
are you studying or working? what do you study/is your job?: both! i'm a full-time student (english major, history minor) and i am one of the student assistants in the english department's student office. i've also had other, less fun part-time jobs in the past.
what is the last country you visited: the netherlands and belgium during a day trip (by motorcycle) in june or july last year, i think.
what country would you want to move to after retiring?: i've haven't ever even considered living that long. i've always had a fascination with ireland and scotland, so based on looks and vibes alone i'd go there. or somewhere with solid winters, like a scandinavian country or finland.
who was your first crush?: hannes (played by nick romeo reimann) in the vorstadtkrokodile movies. i was ready for marriage, dreaming up a life together and everything. it also lasted until i was like 12 years old, so about six years in total. he really had me in a chokehold.
how did you get into f1 fandom?: after my interest was peaked by f1 edits that randomly popped up all over my social media one day (thank you algorithms), i did what i always do when something like that happens and opened tumblr to see what's up. and then i got stuck lol.
i have no clue who has or hasn't been tagged already, so feel free to ignore this!! @hrhgeorgerussell @bright-and-burning @borntogayz @lil-italian-disappointment @liamlawsonlesbian @piastrisms

I didn't hate Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire, honestly it was awesome!
I just got done watching it so I'm still digesting it, but here are my initial thoughts. Any potential spoilers will go under a break.
I went into GxK that it would be similar to GvK and the other Monsterverse films: big monkey hit big lizard, big lizard breathe laser, big monkey block laser with big axe, and so on. And don't get me wrong, it definitely was all that, all pro wrestling but with big monsters, but in a cooler way than what I thought. I'm still trying to figure out what all made GxK more than what I was expecting, but I think this is the main bit.
In today's media, there seems to basically be two options. Either you make a show on streaming, which means your seasons are too short so you have to sacrifice character to plot. Or you make a two to three hour long movie, which uses a big budget to explain either characters or concept, hopefully with something of a plot to tie it together.
But GxK is a secret third thing. Worldbuilding. Adding to lore. Letting the landscapes they paint and the creatures that inhabit them speak for themselves. There were long stretches of screentime where the titans weren't necessarily fighting, they were just doing their thing, exploring their worlds.
Now obviously we need some humans to A, be able to connect to the story some, and B, know what is actually going on. Because while I would love a completely dialogue kaiju movie, the concepts and gimmicks of the Monsterverse just get too convoluted to figure out without Exposition Lady.
I can confirm that Legendary realized that the less human characters they have the better. The cast was relatively small, and while character development was minimal, they did make me feel some feelings toward some of the humans. But they made the right call not giving them too much of the story. What is this, Godzilla Minus One?
It's not, and if you can go into it knowing that it isn't even close to being the same movie as Minus One, and just watch it as a fun Monsterverse entry, I think you'll love it. The music is great too, better than GvK, imo. VFX were awesome too.
Okay, now for some spoilers, just random extra thoughts:
Godzilla really did the OMG MOTHRA!!! thing from that one meme! And I did too tbh, our Queen is back and beautiful as ever!
I love how it wasn't an instant father/son connection between Kong and Mini-Kong (I don't remember his name). Kong tried to help him out a couple times, but then gave up after MINI KONG TRIED TO KILL HIM LIKE MULTIPLE TIMES! Like come on, this little guy is just chaotic. But like they actually had growth in their trust and relationship, it wasn't just like "me big, you little, I dad now".
Scar King was actually a lot cooler than I was expecting. Shimo/Shimu whatever her name is did not have as big a role as I was expecting, but I'm glad she's okay.
Shout out to Mothra for stopping her boyfriend from killing Kong, helping them in Hollow Earth, and then just chilling when they all went to Rio. She said, "you guys got this, right?"
When I saw there was another hollow earth inside Hollow Earth, I'll admit I had a bit of an eye roll. But they explained it away pretty well.
SCOTTISH GUY THAT SAID SHIT IN STAR WARS. Alex Ferns is literally the same character he was in Andor.
I love how they imply that they basically imply that the Iwi had something to do with building the pyramids in Egypt by having the portal thing open RIGHT NEXT TO THEM. Made a cool setting for the fight, too.
At this point, I have no idea how big the Coliseum actually is.
Last thing, for now. For having top billing, Godzilla wasn't in it as much as I thought he might be. I think Legendary is realizing that if you have a character like Godzilla who can just level up his powers instantly to take on anything, and just kinda does his own thing, you've gotta limit that screen time. Since Kong is kinda humanoid, it's easier to empathize with him and thus add character development. Godzilla can only convey so much emotion that most humans can relate to (obviously Shin and Minus convey a lot of emotions, but anyway). Godzilla is in the movie, but Kong is more of the star. Honestly the world of the Hollow Earth and the Iwi people and their history are almost as much of the focus.

Idk if this makes sense but I have kind of like an old Hollywood au lmao.
Idk how Hollywood works or how it worked back then but I have one. And tbh it could just be an actor au but I prefer the aesthetics of old Hollywood so shhh
(It’s Aph/Gar/Laur. No Aaron for my current ideas for it, might sneak him in somewhere though)
Also, an rm bc it’s long
Aphmau’s an up-and-coming actress who gets her first big role because the actress who meant to play it died, and they share a striking resemblance (it was a sequel to another film, where the other actress played the role). Her entire career then turns into her playing roles the other actress would have been casted as, and media kind of forgetting they were different people, even though she wanted to make her own career.
Garroth is a Child Star, and his dad was an actor before him. He was the only one of his brothers to have a truly successful career, due to his looks and sweet personality, but it’s not really his passion. rumour has it that he’s actually looking to retire from acting fully, though Garte insists that the rumours are false. He’s kind of partnered up with Aphmau in order to put focus more on their relationship than Garroth’s potential leaving of the spotlight
Laurence is an actor known for being in more… risqué films, the ones where they push the boundaries of the hayes code a little much. He’s known to be a bit of a playboy and a heart-eater. He’s kind of Aphmau’s first opportunity to break out of the type-cast and image she’s been forced into, and Garroth’s first true act of rebellion from the life he doesn’t want. some unsavoury rumours start spinning when he starts hanging out with the ‘happy’ couple.
Lucinda is a very well known actress who often works alongside Laurence. The two of them make for a formidable pair that bring in so… so much money. Despite how many pursuers she gains, she never seems to give any of them the time of day, and is found partying more often than she is awake during the day. She is, however, close friends with a producer, and the two enjoy shopping and coffee together on the few days she’s seen during sunlight hours.
Katelyn’s dad was a big actor, and her mother was a director, and she’s always been interested in the work. She’s a little too ‘butch’ to be a leading lady, but she is more interested in the theatre aspect anyways. Her and Aphmau meet because she’s her acting instructor, and they become good friends pretty quick.
Nana comes from a family of skilled theatre actors so she went into movies to try and make herself stand out. She has her hair dyed a bright pink to make her stand out even amongst actresses, and tends to play more femme-fatal roles due to her very feline appearance and mannerisms, but is herself very sweet. Her and Aphmau meet on set and Aphmau kind of takes pity on her since she was sat all on her own whilst everyone else was having fun together. But of course Aphmau very quickly grows to love her bubbly personality. Plus, she’s friends with Katelyn already.
To simplify, it’s just a bunch of actors being assholes and hanging out with eachother, and doing things their parents wouldn’t be proud of

Wish Review
So first, my opinions, obviously.
- Voice acting, I love how the characters talk, and they are well acted.
- singing [Sure the songs themselves aren't perfect but the singing is great!]
- The variety of expressions, I really like seeing this because it helps a lot with art
- I like Asha's character, she is adorable in a few scenes but the thing is that there is so much to her that I feel like is missed. For a teenage protagonist who is still developing I like how she is Determined to stop Magnifico and save everyone's wishes. I feel like a lot of people reviewing the movie are not exactly a teen anymore, and as one I kind of relate to Asha in many ways too.
- To be fair, I think Magnifico does a fine job as a villain: there were just a few things that could be fixed that would make him great. But for the movie, I think it is good for the time being. I feel like even then us as people can make ideas for a better idea for what could be changed
- I feel like I would love Amaya as a character no matter what route she takes now that I have watched the movie. I wish she was in the movie a bit more. Also it was kind of funny that Amaya is the one to say no to Magnifico being let out is great: it just needs more moments of Amaya of being able to grieve if that makes sense at all?
- Another thing, I feel like the songs are good on their own, I think I will listen to them every once in a while because I do believe that they are sung well enough. Oddly enough it had brought chills down my own spine.
- I also like Star, sure might have been made to find "AWE ADORABLE THING, MUST BUY" but...for a silent character that is from the sky I actually like it.
-Like others have said: I think it needed more screentime to develop this stuff: just for more development and in general to let everything happen in more than a day or two.
- I do think that the side characters are good for a movie that plays it safe.
- I did laugh, and to be honest, the goat was not annoying. I think people are just exaggerating the goat: I mean it just got to speak English/whatever language you watched it in: I would be talking my ass off in excitement tbh.
-if anything one of the few complaints is definitely that they could have done more with the possession plot line: if many noticed this little thing on the book: I think it would be a perfect form for an evil-possessed book to take. Might make some art for this monster
Tumblr media
- I think that the magic system is not fully explained and does have some holes in it: but over it does good for the movie. Like how Sora's keyblade does what it needs to do. If this were to become a series: there needs some kind of explanation of the magic. The wishes seems to be something that has already known for a while: the cursed book clearly knows the bad way they could be used.
- I do like the relationship between Magnifico and Amaya, I feel like it is a refresher to see a villain with someone they love and are married to you know?
Movie rating?
May have not mentioned everything but to be honest it is not a perfect movie: sure it is disappointing for a 100th anniversary movie but if you take that out and think of it as a movie on its own: it not only does the trick for a movie: but it is something people can like. Just 🏴‍☠️ the movie and see for yourself.
I think that overall other reviews are kind of overdoing it with the " IT'S BAD", I can see why it has mixed reviews and I am with the ones who love it. The reason is because well...it's fun! I feel like the characters are great with a few exceptions and complaints.
If I were to score it, it is not going to be a perfect 10/10, I think it is a 7/10, I don't want to put it down to a four like others, because I think that the people worked hard on this movie when it comes to animating, voice acting and other things.
Final rating: 7/10
I do agree that there are things to be fixed and after watching it...I think I know what the other plot ideas would look like and I think that I will do a rewrite of the plot ideas for fun instead of rewriting the whole movie: so expect a post with my ideas on every idea I have. Note: I also put it up to 7/10 because I enjoyed it, like really enjoyed it: it made me laugh, smile and for me being a teen, it is going to go in my box of fandoms
