I hated how scrolling through instagram made me feel. Perfect bodies, white teeth, long healthy hair, perfect boyfriends…..just everything I’ve ever wanted. I tried not to fall down this rabbit hole, but it never worked out.

I would scroll and scroll until I felt physically sick. I would then exit out of instagram and stare at myself in the mirror pointing out everything I hated about myself. My skin oily and acne prone, my hair boring, my eyebrows too thin and light, my lips not big enough, my nose huge, my body disgusting. I hated my body with a burning passion.

Curves are good but not my curves. My curves are considered fat and unattractive.My breasts too big, my stomach not flat…bending over and seeing “rolls” God I fucking hated it. My thighs too big, my ass not fat enough….it's brutal. I'm not sure why it mattered what my body looked like. I also wasn’t sure why I cared so much about what people thought of me. I hated it, and I tried to hide myself away and shelter myself from any mean comments.

I tried not to be in the triplets videos because I saw the way some of these “fans” treated Madi, and that girl is perfect….I could only imagine what they would say about me. They even body shamed Chris and it was insane to me. They talked about it in a video saying that body shaming was disgusting and it doesn’t matter what people look like, we're all humans and all our bodies are different. I agreed, but I couldn’t believe these things about myself.

Chris so badly wanted to film a TikTok with me because we both were wearing the same FreshLove shirt, and black pants, and at first I rejected it, but after some convincing I decided to film it with him. I sucked it up and decided to have fun with my friend.

“Okay let’s do the “she wish there were two of me” trend, and like I’ll say it, and then stick my hand out and you’ll slide into frame and high five me” he said

“I love that trend, let’s do it” I said laughing

He set up his phone and started recording, lip syncing

“Walk in that Bih with with that Loui V” he said, and then looked over at me backing away from the camera

“She say she wish there were two of me” he said backing up and high fiving me as I came into frame

We started dancing, and he slung his arm over my shoulder “she fuckin, she know what she doing, B” We sang laughing and dancing

We finished filming and he posted the TikTok. For once I actually wasn’t scared of him posting me because I genuinely felt cute in my outfit today. My FreshLove shirt was cropped and I had my favorite pair of flare leggings on.

“I finally got you to film with me” he said jumping around

“Yeah that's a one time occurrence” I said laughing

“Oh come onnnn so many people want you in more of our videos” he said looking at me

“Yeahhhh, but I don’t know sometimes your guys fans are a little mean” I said looking down

“Yeah well fuck those haters those aren’t fans” he said scoffing

Later on that night Chris, Matt, Nick and I were in their living room playing board games while some random movie played in the background. We were all having a great time until I got a text message, I looked at my phone to see my best friend texting me

My heart sank immediately, my breathing getting shallow, my throat constricting and my palms getting sweaty. What the fuck is she talking about….

I opened up TikTok and went to Chris' video opening up the comments….my mouth instantly going dry

-“I know she didn’t crop a FreshLove shirt when she’s fat🤣”

-“I hope Chris isn’t dating her, that's actually sad….he must be desperate😗”

-“Why does she think she’s so hot??? Like what am I missing LMFAOOO”

-“oh that’s not- LMFAOO WHAT IS THIS GIRL DOING”

-“makes sense why she isn’t in the video anymore….she really let herself go”

-“Is that Y/N??? When did she gain so much weight??”

These comments made my stomach churn, and my face burn with embarrassment. The one day I feel cute I’m completely torn apart by these so called “fans”

“Chris you have to take that video down of us” I said looking at him

“What?? Why I love it” he said

“Just take it down” I said

“I love that video too don’t delete it” Nick said

“I don’t want it up” I said avoiding eye contact

Matt pulled out his phone to open the video, he opened the comments and immediately his eyes were saddened

“What the fuck” he said scrolling through the comments

Chris snatched the phone from him reading the comments

“This is fucking disgusting….Y/N don’t believe this shit okay” he said looking at me

“How can I not? These are things I see too, and to have your followers point them out is making me feel disgusting” I said

“None of this shit is true okay” Nick said looking at me

“I just want to be left alone right now” I said standing up

I went down to Chris’ room where I would stay when I spent the night. I laid on his bed. Letting the comments replay in my head. My heart racing and my breathing getting deep……I was starting to have anxiety about the comments and slowly I allowed myself to cry

The tears just flowed like a stream. I tried not to let these comments get to me, but it’s hard when people are judging you on the internet and they don’t even know you. I was letting out choked sobs, trying to cover my mouth to control my sobs. This was so unfair.

I heard the door open, so I figured it was Chris. He shut the door behind him, and sat at the end of the bed as I cried

“I know you don’t want to talk and that’s okay, but I want you to listen to me” he said

“I know it’s hard to not believe what people are saying on the internet, trust me I do, but I want you to know that those comments are from a bunch of children being haters okay. None of that shit is true at all. You’re a beautiful, funny and kind souled person” Chris said

I started to calm down, allowing my tears to stop, and trying to control my breathing.

“You don’t have to change for anyone okay. Stay true to yourself. You are amazing and don’t let these haters behind a screen get to you” he said rubbing my leg

“Thank you Chris” I said in a whisper

“Of course Y/N. I’m always here for you” he said smiling at me

I wiped my eyes and began to sit up

“Follow me” he said getting up, I got up and followed him to his bathroom

“What are you doing?” I asked

He walked into the bathroom and turned the lights on

“You’re going to stand in the mirror and look at yourself, you’re going to point out what you find unattractive about yourself, and I’m going to tell you why they’re beautiful” he said standing behind me, and placing me in front of him

“Chris no…” I said looking at him through the mirror

“I’m not letting you leave till you do it” he said shrugging his shoulders

“Ugh fine” I said looking in the mirror, at my swollen eyes, the tears down my face and my lips swollen

“Let’s start with your hair” he said

“I hate it…..it’s boring it’s flat it’s ugly” I said

“Wrong! It’s beautiful. It’s long and shiny and you take the best care of it. It always smells so good” he said looking at me

I just looked at him blushing slightly

“Go on” he said nodding his head

“My eyebrows…they’re so thin and light….and my eyes the color is ugly” I said

Podcast wanted to run the official Ghostbuster social media's but was quickly turned down at that. They needed someone who could actually be on top of that kind of stuff and whatnot. So, Stanz made a deal with Podcast that they'd get a social media manager, and he could act as their teammate with that, basically. Giving them ideas, giving them video clips and extra details, etcetera.

Most of the others didn't see a real reason for a social media manager, but as long as it wasn't their money.

Trevor offered to just do everything himself, but that was obviously turned down as well. The teens all agreed not to let the adults run the account either. They didn't need millennial - Gen X / Boomer humor flooding the whole account and making them look bad.

And that's where you came in.

surprisingly, Pheobe was the one to find you. she's seriously the most chronically offline person ever so the fact she ever opened Instagram was a miracle in itself

lots of talking back and forth and meeting the original four three ghostbusters to get input, then meeting callie & garry and the teenagers

you actually figured out that you used to be friends with Lucky as well, damn

you had managed social media accounts before, but you'd recently quit a few of those because of labor laws being broken so, yknow

you quickly formed a bond with Lucky, Trevor, and Podcast. you were kind of close in age to all three of them and they were all invested in the public image for the brand

setting the Instagram up was genuinely the funnest thing ever

the four of you were chilling in the living room in the firehouse (since sleepover stuff, pheobe was in her room reading) and you had your laptop in your lap and the three of them over your shoulders

the amount of laughing and cackling got some scolding from callie upstairs

it took everything out of you to not make the first post a video of trevor being soaked in Slimer's slime (which had been recorded by Lucky just by coincidence as they were investigating the attic again)

the first three posts, which were pinned, all lined up to be like a banner kind of logo with the theme song in the back, and they all played the same video, clips of the og ghostbusters and how they grew and then the new ghostbusters

the tiktok is its own thing, you allowed trev, lucky, podcast (and pheobe) to run it, but everything had to be ran by you first because pr shit

but thankfully no boomer humor or slang is ever being put on those accounts

most of those people don't even know wtf the internet is anyways lol

stanz has a personal vendetta against you /hj after you posted a .5 of him for relatable promo. he had no idea what you were doing but it was criminal that you made his forehead look so much more bigger than it already was

Winston gives you a bunch of old pics to post to trending angst sounds as well LOL

let's not talk about that tiktok where you, lucky, and trevor dance to/remake submissive and breedable by smosh ft bbno$, okay?

^podcast and pheobe were behind the camera cackling the whole time

lots of random pic posts on the insta as well because why not (most of them are the teens looking awkward, callie, gary & lars trying to look like cool scientists, or venkman, stanz, zeddemore & melnitz being classic, sassy old people)

the socials are never professional whatsoever, it's fun but it's not heavily controversial or obvious that you're there as a pr manager basically or just to manage the socials

like man they don't have the time to look at all the comments, take all the advice, reply to fans, etc

trevor is always bitching about how you make more money than he does /lh

you're not just a representative to them, you're actually family. you're just cool like that

hello, idk if it's a personal pet peeve, but what do you feel about the whole toktok/insta side of the bsd fandom that's actively embroiled in stanning/character slander/ship wars/mischaracterization/hot takes? i saw a post that went "if they arrested the ada for one crime why not the pm for all their crimes" and another that said 'atsushi is a shit protag he's whiney & boring i want dazai as a protag' and i had to do a whole meditation routine so i didn't projectile throw my phone into the wall and break it into pieces;////

Honestly, this is the value of not having tiktok or instagram and literally only following certain blogs. I just don't bother.

I still see some weird takes, but honestly, much as it's very odd for these to be some of the takeaways, a lot of these people are just having fun with a piece of media they like. I don't want to ruin their fun you know? And if they're complaining... good for them? Not everyone is going to like the same things.

It is a bit irritating, don't get me wrong. But I don't feel it's my place to butt in and correct people - I'm no expert, just another fan with my own interpretations! If people are open to hearing other opinions or being corrected, I'll gladly do so, but really I just see stuff, grimace for a few seconds, then block. Or simply vacate the premises. I Do Not See It.

.........that said, any kind of Atsushi slander makes my blood boil. How dare you that is my boy right there. I'd like to see you be a confident protagonist after getting your leg cut off on a near weekly basis.

a stats report on the rk ashwick books (as of April 2023)

some folks responded positively to the idea of seeing data on how my books have done (for indie author research and benchmark purposes), so here you go!

I'll put everything under the cut:

📚 What do I write?

Cozy fantasy romance under the pen name R.K. Ashwick.

📚 Why do I write?

Because I love it. I have a full-time job that isn't related to writing, so I write in my spare time. I should also note that I do not have dependents, am not a caregiver, and I do have anxiety and ADHD. I am not certain that I want to be a full-time writer, given the financial instability and the joy it could take away from writing. However, I want my books to be and perform the best they can, so I try to be professional about my product and methods.

(To me, this is all important context to be up-front about. Finances, family size, and health all have a huge impact on an author's goals and strategies.)

📚 How many books do I have out?

The Stray Spirit: released August 2022. First in a planned trilogy.

A Rival Most Vial: released March 2023. First in a planned trilogy.

I was doing Amazon ads, but recently nixed them, as I didn't feel they were really getting me anything. I'll likely return to them once I have more books out.

A Note on Follower Count: I have, like 10 FB followers, 400-ish Insta followers, 1500 TikTok folders, and almost 1600 Tumblr followers. I've been on Tumblr the longest and TikTok second longest. TikTok had the fastest growth, Insta the slowest. However, general advice is that engagement rate is more important than follower count. I'll be real, I'm not doing that hot on that front. I'll consistently get around 20 likes on Insta posts and TikTok often caps my video views at around 200 or 300. The videos that do the best on TT often aren't the ones related to my books. Fun times.

A Note on Newsletter Stats: I have a pretty consistent open rate of 25-30%, which I think is okay. I'd like for it to be closer to 40%. (It's also hard to actually track open rates, so that number isn't entirely reliable.)

A Note on ARC Reader Stats: I got 100 readers for TSS and almost 200 for ARMV. This resulted in a ballpark count of 20 reviews for TSS and 30 reviews for ARMV around release time.

📚 Other Marketing Strategies

What you see above under Visibility is my ongoing work. I also do more limited-run strategies, like:

occasional free book giveaways on social media

pre-order gifts for my book

I sent out around 20 pre-order gift envelopes for TSS and 45 for ARMV. I operate the pre-order gifts at a loss, but I really enjoy doing it, so I'm okay with it. I also have lots of leftover stickers and bookmarks that I can bundle with giveaways.

So, what did all this work and shennanery get me?

From July 2022-April 2023 (10 months):

Total Royalties, paid and unpaid: $1543.49 ($2.68 per book)

📚 Is that good or bad?

I have no idea!! And I think in the end, it all depends on your goals.

If my goal was to make a living: welp, it's def not enough.

If my goal was to break even: between website set up, DBA set up, cover cost, editing cost, illustrator cost: nah. I'd have to make about $4,000 more to safely say I've broken even.

If my goal was to get strangers, and not just family and friends, to read my books: oh hey, I did that!!

I hope this information helps you set a goal, so you're not mentally wandering around like I am.

📚 Other Notes

A big factor in having a financially successful indie book is fitting genre conventions in your chosen subgenre, or 'writing to market.' I will say that A Rival Most Vial is more written to market than The Stray Spirit is. The Stray Spirit sort of straddles cozy, historical, and academic fantasy without actually leaning in to any of those things, so it's a little harder to market.

I also spent a lot on cover, editing, and illustration. That makes it harder to be a financially viable business, but it's what I wanted to do to have a strong finished product. I am lucky in that my full-time job can cover these expenses.

I'm not very good at social media. I've never had anything go viral on any of the sites.

The most rewarding part of all this is seeing how people react to the book: reviews, videos where they're almost crying over the book, podcast invitations, and [something a bit bigger than I'll announce in the summer.] At the end of the day, if I have a small group of buyers who are vocal in engaging with my books, that's far more rewarding than a large group of buyers who don't engage.

sorry ahead of time if this is a weird Q, i've been a follower for some time! i went to VCUarts but i dropped out when covid hit and for personal reasons i'm probably not going to go back even though i'd really like to, so i've been piecing together my own art education. were there any subjects/projects you were exposed to in the program that changed the way you approach art? one of the last classes i was able to take was a typography class and it opened my eyes to a design world i hadn't considered. you have such strong graphic design skills and it'd be really cool to hear what helped you develop!

Hey, thank you! and not at all - i totally get that, and i love talking about design lol. i rly enjoyed the gdes program but i kinda wish i could take it again now, i dont think i appreciated it as much as i could have when i was there 😭. as is life ig. i think def the biggest thing that i learned was about using typography and trying to develop an eye for it. im bad at the math parts of it but usually i can eyeball the negative space well enough. basically getting used to considering typography as graphic parts of a composition as opposed to just placing text on top of a graphic.

i think whats honestly most helpfully informed my own design work is honestly just trying to look at and collect as much "cool stuff" as possible. i follow a lot of random design instagram accounts (tbh u can just look thru the graphic design tags on insta and pinterest) even if i dont necessarily respect the artist (LMAO) even if they just do one thing rly interesting. also following some more experimental and a lot of art book/publication/zine accounts because theyre def gonna have some of the cooler graphic design work for print format especially.

one thing about insta (and tiktok tbh) thats both annoying and helpful is that with all the promoted posts you end up seeing a lot of whats currently "trending" for design, if ur following enough design accounts. like the truck sticker i just did on twitter is actually using an effect i learned from an insta reel that popped up on my feed lol.

one assignment from a class i rly appreciated was doing "make-a-days" where you basically made an image every day. didnt matter the quality or what it was but you just had to make something. it was good for experimenting and trying new things. also just picking a theme and making fake graphics/posters for my friends comics or something i liked.

i would also say that my personal biggest strength is that im just rly good at the programs, so i can ideate really quickly and its easier to figure out how to get a certain effect i want, and specifically how to copy a style I saw from something cool i saw somewhere :) outside my more bolder lines and compositional style (i dont have enough patience for rendering 99% of the time) i have a pretty flexible style because i usually have an end product or look in mind. also im usually inspired by other artists i follow online a lot too. but honestly just take the time to rly get used to ur program of choice and what effects settings and filters it has.

biggest advice is collect as many cool images as you can find and figure out what you like across them and how you can copy it for whatever ur making.

I thought a long time about if I should comment on this Alex drama bcs even though I like gossip it’s their life yk. Before I get into it, I don’t want to defend her on any of this, I don’t want to hate her relentlessly either I just want to rant a bit bcs it makes me think and I just need to get it out lol so don’t come for me.

anyway, as a person who thinks Charles is hot but also knows that realistically I'll never meet him or even if that happens, he'll never be interested in me I really don't know what to think of Alex. I want to like her but something about her just icks me idk. I just want to rant tbh lol.

1. The whole shy thing: I mean my MBTI is INTP and I am a bit socially anxious sometimes so I guess I (at least think) I know a bit about that. My problem is not that she has her Instagram on private or that she has an open TikTok but rather that she goes every-f*ing-where with him. Every event I've seen him attend in the last weeks, she’s also there. Alright, now maybe she just wants to support him but I as a shy person would never subject myself to cameras especially if my partner is so blatantly ignoring me all the time and I myself am clearly not interested. I'd maybe do 1 or 2 and then start skipping them. But then again, she and I are probably totally different so idk. Also paddock appearances. She's always there getting photographed and using the 'celebrity entrance' (idk how it’s called lol) when she could use the staff entrance many other families and friends apparently use. and i get not wanting to be special and different from all the other wags who go in the 'celebrity' one but i would be absolutely terrified of people posting the wrong type of pictures. And you still see her in the garage so it’s not even just to show she’s there. Also, if she’s not interested, why be at races? I get it that the time you can spend with your bf as a wag is limited but you could still travel with him and wait in the hotel and watch the race from there (and if its just to show support one of her friends could post her watching the race like they’ve done before lol) which would be much more relaxing and less stressful.

2. Also, not really an extra point but anyway, she did a lot of like gala stuff when she was younger and she didn’t look uncomfortable at all (I’m sure we’ve all seen the video where she wears the black dress a few years ago by now) so unless she suddenly grew socially awkward / anxious (which idk if it can even happen) or her parents forced her to do it and she’s just really good at acting she’s not shy at all. Also, if her art account was private previously and its just a place ‘to empty her camera role’ and she doesn’t want attention anyway why open it in the first place? Like she doesn’t want attention from people and has a private insta but a public insta too? It just doesn’t make sense to me.

3. Posing for cameras: She does pose for cameras (Wimbledon is a good example in my opinion, she looks so staged the whole time) and also around the paddock I guess idk I haven’t really seen that many pictures of her tbh. Also, the rumors of her calling paparazzi and then acting as if she didn’t want to be photographed (when, if ever, did that happen btw I never saw a location), if true, are just horrible bcs why. A ‘truly’ shy person (aka someone that actually doesn’t like attention) wouldn’t do that. No way in hell. But I guess if she wanted to show that she’s there to support her bf its an option bcs then she can at least control when photos get taken. But still weird. Idk if I would do it in her position. Probably not though bcs if someone finds out it’d be a big drama and its just not worth it. Same as with the next point, I kinda get that she wants to look pretty and supportive for Charles but its just a horrible way to do it. If you want to show that you support him to everyone so badly, post a story. On your art account, your real account (ofc it’d have to be open first) or make a third account. Not unheard of that people have a private and a public account. Probably what I would do to show some stuff but not everything.

4. Looking at wag pages: This I actually really get for some reason. Maybe she wants her bfs fans to like her or just be liked in general (I'm the same so i can’t really judge her on this) and changes bcs of that. It’s a bit pathetic in my opinion bcs you can never get everyone to like you and its obviously not working but as I said, I'm not better so I really shouldn't judge. The thing I find weird is her (apparently) letting fan pages in her private insta. In her position I’d be flattered by fan pages but why let them in your (or your friends) private insta? The pictures there will be leaked by them and everyone gains access so what’s the point of keeping it private? Another thing I have to add, why is she being so obvious about it? Like the Monza Studying TikTok was just weird, just sit it out and make an appearance with him, her changing from beautiful dresses to jeans all of a sudden was obvious, if she wants to change herself at least make it subtly and not boom complete style change.

5. Bikini add: Idk but it just feels so weird. I guess I get it bcs you’re suddenly getting all this attention from people and maybe these calls by brands and maybe want to try it out but then choosing a bikini brand is just weird in my opinion (maybe she thought it’d be more lowkey bcs it’s a smaller brand but idk). Choosing a bikini brand over something more modest just rubs me in the wrong way but that’s maybe just me bcs I’m not the person to wear revealing clothes or post me wearing revealing stuff. I get wanting to try modeling bcs tbf I’d be interested too but we’ll see if this was a one-time thing or not (she has modeled before btw but in my opinion that’s different bcs she wasn’t well known so in my logic / mind it’s less embarrassing bcs no one really knows who you are)

6. Apparently dropping out: Stupid. Only thing I wanna say to that. I know she’s rich and stuff but why drop out if you plan on leading a private life? Also, it’s such a prestigious uni (I think?) and just weird. Idk it doesn’t make sense in my mind but then again, she’s rich, I’m not and she probably has a trust fund set for her anyway.

7. Being rude to fans: Also idk what is actually true or not but being rude is like a no go in my book. I couldn’t be rude to strangers (as long as they’re nice / at least normal) if I tried and I’m not saying she needs to take photos with people but just maybe decline nicely and about her comment saying she’s not a delivery man or whatever is just weird. Bcs its not that hard to take something from a fan to give your bf. cutting off social media

first of all, i wanna apologize for this hiatus. i opened the blog and a couple posts later i stopped publishing, i am really bad when it comes to the discipline for writing in a blog, diary or such. but i wanna slowly come back here and i have a couple of ideas already.

second, hope everyone who reads this had a good christmas and new year. let's focus on becoming our best versions for this 2023 and keep improving for the upcoming years! :) i have some new year's resolutions myself, and one of them (and today's topic) is cutting off progressively my relationship with social media.

i am not a social person at all, i barely post and i still find myself spending more time than i'd like in sites like instagram. and, honestly, do i need it? short answer: no.

yesterday i deleted my account and the app itself. i didn't tell anyone because i'm doing it for myself. and i already feel much better with this simple decision! i still spend a lot of time in other sites like twitter or tiktok, but atleast i find myself enjoying more using them. when it comes to instagram i just felt i wasn't enjoying it and it wasn't something "i liked to do", but more something like i was mechanically used to. when i am bored with my phone, just automatically open the app to check a couple of stories and posts and close it, then repeat. and honestly i was really burned out.

after all, i don't really enjoy or have the need to post myself. as i said i am not social at all so i don't hang out often with friends, and when i do i'm not the kind of person who shares it on insta's stories or posts.

i seriously recommend doing the same thing for everyone. a lot of people finds themselves low on self esteem because we spend a lot of time on our days checking instagram, seeing lots of people using filters or editing their face or body features for every post. i totally think this step is a good start to cut from those toxic habits.

in my own case it wasn't about feeling personally triggered or affected by that, but more about finding myself in a "space" i didn't felt like i wanted to be in. a lot of people following me when from those followers i maybe talk to the 2% of them. and following myself a lot of people i don't even care about. i wanted to stop seeing the life or stuff of people i don't relate or care about at all. and again, i'm really glad i made this decision. i gotta say i also find myself mechanically tapping on the area of my screen where i had instagram's icon.

i don't wanna stop here, i want to keep reducing my social media consumption until i am at a point where i only use them an essential amount of time. but this is a good start for myself, and i really encourage everyone to try something like this. i also don't think everyone has to be as radical as i was, but try small things like unfollowing people or "influencers" you don't care or relate to at all. i already know if i ever come back to instagram it'll be to strictly follow people im genuinely interested about and i feel theythey bring something positive to my feed, like artists, designers, content creators or only close friends i really talk to.

Esmeria smiled. "Sounds good! See you guys later."

Enid and Esmeria closed their eyes tightly as Artemis and Apollo shuffled off the bed. There was a sudden whooshing sound, and a flash of light appeared behind both girls' eyelids. When they opened their eyes again, the twins were gone. Enid sighed. "Well that was fun, but I should really head back to my dorm. Night!"

Esmeria nodded. "See you tomorrow!"

The werewolf hopped off Esmeria's bed and left the room. Esmeria looked at the dark purple electric guitar in the corner of her room, thinking. Then she shook her head, changed into her pajamas, and crawled under the covers of her black four-poster bed, falling asleep almost the second her head touched the pillow.
