"Echoes of Tragedy: Euripides' The Trojan Women through Gilbert Murray's Lens"
Tumblr media
In the haunting corridors of ancient Greek tragedy, Euripides' "The Trojan Women" stands as a timeless testament to the ravages of war and the indomitable strength of the human spirit. Translated with eloquence and emotional resonance by Gilbert Murray, this rendition breathes life into the poignant narrative of women grappling with the aftermath of the Trojan War.
Murray's translation is a delicate dance between preserving the essence of Euripides' verses and making them accessible to a modern audience. The language is both lyrical and evocative, capturing the profound grief, resilience, and defiance of the Trojan women as they confront the ruins of their once-mighty city. The translator's mastery lies not only in his linguistic prowess but in his ability to convey the visceral emotions embedded in the original text.
"The Trojan Women" unfolds as a lamentation, an anguished chorus of voices mourning the fates thrust upon them by the capricious whims of war. Through Murray's lens, the stark realities faced by Hecuba, Andromache, and Cassandra resonate with a rawness that transcends centuries. The translator weaves tragedy into every line, inviting readers to bear witness to the harrowing consequences of conflict.
Murray's understanding of Greek drama shines through in his meticulous attention to the nuances of each character. Hecuba's regal sorrow, Andromache's maternal grief, and Cassandra's prophetic agony are not just words on a page; they are profound expressions of the human condition. The translator's choice of language creates a symphony of voices, harmonizing the individual sorrows into a collective elegy for a fallen city.
The enduring power of "The Trojan Women" lies not only in its exploration of the consequences of war but in its ability to transcend its historical context. Gilbert Murray's translation serves as a bridge between ancient and modern, inviting readers to witness the universality of human suffering and resilience. As the final echoes of Troy's tragedy reverberate through the pages, Murray ensures that Euripides' masterpiece retains its relevance and emotional potency for generations to come.

English in School is learning the curtains are blue because the poet is sad
Doing Masters in English is learning the curtains were blue because the British colonised India and forced Indian farmers to grow Indigo crops and the poet purchased that exact colour to show hollowness of the society which traded luxury on human suffering

I heard or read a quote somewhere recently, and I can't remember where, and it's really annoying me. Does anyone recognise it?
Paraphrased: 'people are happy to suffer and sacrifice when everyone else is too, but when someone is exempt, they become enraged.'
It is consistent with a lot of the themes in media that I usually watch, so here's a list of what I've consumed recently from which it could have come: Reborn Rich (2022) ep 14-16 Military Prosecutor Doberman (2022) ep 1 Tokyo Ghoul vol. 14 W- Two Worlds Your Highness (2017) Alice in Borderland, season 1 ep 1 [I read some The Devil Judge meta]
It could have come from elsewhere, but that's what I've got from my internet history, and I'm nearly certain that I would've written it down if I got it from a physical book I was reading. I would appreciate the help. Thanks.

I’ve come to the realization that in the next 10 years this planet may have its first trillionaire! This would be so sad, it’s bad enough that we have so many billionaires but in the near future we will have at least One Trillionaire.
People have to realize that in order for one person, to be that rich, Millions and even billions of people have to suffer in Poverty and near poverty for just him to have all that money. This is someone Earth definitely does not need.

Remeber I am always kind at first and then anything else. I never give up on kindness. I keep tying it on my sleeves. I bring it in my eyes and greet people like they are warrior. Because most of us are warrior. We fight for life, love, pain, to be seen and heard. We fight battle of ours everyday. I keep it in mind. My scars speak to me when they meet the same. When i look at people i want to see nothing but compassion. But some of you are wretched from heart. you dont know when to hold a flower or a sword. You keep your knives handy. You dig in deep until I dont pull out my own and leave you with a scar for a lifetime. So remeber I was kind at first. Because I know the heart it takes to trust one of those people you were killed by.

why is religious Christmas imagery all so joyful and pleasant? where is the inherent horror of the birth of Christ? A mother is handed her newborn child, wailing and innocent. Her hands come away sticky. Red. Simply by giving her son life she has already killed him. He is doomed from the beginning. Her love will not save him from suffering. Because the thing cradled in her arms is not a baby, it is a sacrifice: born amongst the other bleating animals whose blood will one day be spilled in the name of what demands it. the night is silent with anticipation. Mary, did you know? That your womb was also a grave?
