oranges have always been known as symbols of wealth&good luck. in Cantonese, the phrase, "giving a mandarin orange" doubles as the phrase, "giving gold"; mandarins&sweet oranges alike have been offered as gifts&put on altars, particularly to tempt sweetness from the Lunar New Year, for centuries. warm weather grows the sweetest oranges all around the world, &human hands needed to cultivate that sweetness from fruit that was barely edible in the wild. a history of exotic beauty&fortune have followed the orange world over, and the fruit&all it's juices enticed eyes&finger tips long before the colour had ever been named separately from the fruit. though not nearly as exotic in flavour as it once was, the orange will always stand as a lucky charm to draw sweetness&good fortune to one's life&home.
chili peppers bring spice to the food that nourishes us, to the body&mind, &have always been favoured to draw spice to life, as well. chilies conquered the world, though the chili has represented the fighting spirit&vitality for much longer than the world knew it. in South America, where the chili is native, chili peppers are often used in traditional medicines to enhance vitality&metabolism, as well as to numb pain. once the chili found it's way around the world, indigenous medical systems incorporated them as quickly as food stylings did for the same reasons; now, garlands of chilies can be found hanging all over many Asian countries to draw good fortune, feminine independence, &masculine vitality. in China, peppers have a special place as a symbol for revolution, as well, highlighting the long standing history of the chili pepper as a symbol of the fighting spirit.
garlands are perhaps one of my favourite ways to both dry ingredients&decorate. garlands of oranges&peppers have been used, traditionally, to draw both sweetness&spice to life (particularly finances&the bedroom), as well as hedge bad or negative energies.
