Boltz - Besh Squad Engineer
Subject: Boltz Welmok (Codename: Boltz) Species: Gand (lungless) Homeworld: Gand Gender: Male Age: 29 Affiliation: New Republic, Galactic Alliance (Besh Squad)
The youngest member of Besh Squad and a Gand Findsman, Boltz got his codename (and his given name per Gand naming rites) through his technological aptitude. Such skills include building devices and droids, slicing computers, and repairs, among others.
While his squad role isn't strictly combat-oriented, Boltz is still fairly competent in battle thanks to being mildly Force-sensitive, wielding a Findsman shockstaff in close-quarters and sensing attacks before they happen, a skill that has proven especially helpful against Forceless. Some Jedi suspect this Force-sensitivity also has a part in his skill with machines, as he's been able to repair and disassemble devices he hasn't even studied in-depth before in seconds.
Boltz is one of the more socially awkward members of the squad, often being holed up in a laboratory or garage when he's off-duty. However, any unusual technology can easily pique his curiosity. Despite being a lungless Gand (a species which otherwise breathes ammonia), Boltz wears a respirator mask to hide his face and to mislead his enemies. When going undercover, Boltz will reduce his name to "Gand" when referring to himself (Gands usually refer to themselves in third-person).

"Ladies, Gentlemen, All,
There is no murderer among you. In fact, Essik was brought here under a misapprehension. For you see, Mr. Alkasani ended his own life through hubris.
A collector of ancient things, he believed in their value but held a cynical view to any esoteric threat they offered. Six weeks past, he came into ownership of a relic, taken from the lost flagship of the Sith Lord known as Darth Jadus. Some part of Jadus' power lurks within that relic, slaying and consuming all who come into its possession, until its long-dead master can reclaim it.
Essik is sorry to say that all here, having entered this mansion, are under threat of this curse now. Within three days, unless we find a way to destroy it, all those present will meet with the same end as your late companion."
I've been meaning to add Essik Lyccane onto here for a while, and given Shellsweet did such a fantastic job of drawing him several times, it was only natural to pick her as an option (seriously, please check out her other stuff).
He's also arguably the one who evolved the most since his inception. I specifically created him for the Brotherhood roleplay website, to break the impression of every general leading from the front. As someone in his twilight years and with a far sharper mind than a strong body, it was a fun contrast.
The thing is, outside of social events and writings, there are not many options for a grand master of strategies. So, over time, he turned into basically a detective for murder mysteries, and then kept bumping into the occult. So it was the odd situation of Adama turned Poirot turned Carnacki, just through the stories I kept being given.
Out of all my lot, he's probably the most fun to write in most non-violent situations, or find an excuse to turn Star Wars into every kind of classical fiction genre I can get an excuse to try. Detective stories, gothic horror, conspiracy thrillers, and even Les Miserables to a degree. All with a five-foot-tall bowler hat-wearing mantis man as the protagonist.
If you want to see more, check out the website here, or even the associated (if in various states of update) wikia here.

Sketch for Boltz, Besh Squad's machinist.
This eccentric Gand has a sharp understanding of hardware and computer software, and carries a number of self-made gadgets to assist him in a variety of tasks, including squad support. As a Findsman, Boltz is also mildly Force-sensitive, a trait which makes him a capable combatant and wielder of the Gand shockstaff.
Due to the unusual nature of how Gands get their names, Boltz is both his codename and his real name. Even though he wears a respirator mask, Boltz is actually a lungless Gand. Boltz wears it to throw off enemies and if he gets a breach, use it as an improvised gas bomb.

Chapter 1
"Preparing for final approach. Access code should have transmitted by now." Shud watched the comms array and kept one hand resting on the sensor jamming controls, just in case.
The New Republic was just too understaffed to keep track of all the small transports making blue milk runs in this sector. Even if the bogus code didn't pass muster, there was no one to give chase. No one to try and scramble a transponder signature from the shuttle. There was too much space traffic, and too few peacekeepers. Still, a bored engineer might track their exit vector. It was just easier to be cautious. Precious cargo, Shud thought.
This particular lump of iron ferrite, no bigger than one of the lesser moons of Bogden, was considered the Republic's only substantial hub in the region. No one stayed on the Rings of Kafrene for long, they just grabbed whatever rest possible and passage to somewhere better. It was a dingy little outpost among flat grey asteroids, and there was no sky. That's what made it perfect. Shud angled the little Incom vessel for a circular landing, knowing full well that no one would give them a second glance among the rest of the space trash.
"Access is affirmative, Shuttle Purrgil Song. Proceed to dock platform, space number three-oh-two-three."
Shud grinned. The hard part was over. They looked over one shoulder to the trio of Gand adolescents strapped in to the seats bolted to the floor of the cargo hold. "We've got a landing clearance, folks. All that happens now is a nice easy stroll to your next charter."
The eldest of the squat little insectoids, a male, was rubbing one three-fingered hand across his respirator device nervously. The two younger Gand, the little sisters, droned out a few low tones punctuated with clicks and buzzing noises. It was a subtle language, and Shud didn't follow it. But the older brother hissed out in Basic. "This Gand is very grateful for your help. Is there time for a meal before the next voyage?"
Shud shook their head. "Sorry, my friend. We've timed this very precisely. But there is food to your liking aboard the next ship. I requested it specifically."
"You have done much for this clan already. Many thanks."
Once the shuttle dropped out of the hustle and bustle of orbit and rested demurely in the space on the landing pad, Shud was finally able to unstrap and stretch. Big around the middle these days, and boasting more wrinkles and folds across the muddy brown face than a Clawdite should at their age, they were positive it was all from over-worrying about Republic entanglements. Not that they had anything against the Republic. Shud was born hating the Galactic Empire--it was a family motto--and the democracy that replaced it had the right sentiments. Just a tragic sense of self-importance. One would swear that was how the Old Republic fizzled and died in its last days, and the fancy lordships on Chandrila and Coruscant seemed determined to set everything back exactly to where it was nearly half a century ago. Shud would prefer the galaxy move forward instead, but what did they know.
The three Gand seemed to relax once their feet hit the landing platform. Their species was not at ease in space, or really anywhere far from their homeworld. But they had come this far, over two hundred parsecs. If the elder sibling could get them all safely back to their planet after all this, Shud was confident that the young fellow would earn his clan's name for his effort. Until then, he continuously referred to himself as merely 'this Gand,' which was adorable in its humility but admittedly inconvenient for communicating in Basic. The little family looked around in all directions, like tourists, letting their compound eyes take in the mass of consumption that Kafrene saw each day.
Vendors barked at them in every language as Shud herded the passengers down the grimy trench toward the next landing platform. Luckily, Gand had largely unreadable expressions of fear or uncertainty to the unfamiliar eye, and so their vacant trudge was uneventful to the locals. One human had decided to wander along with them for a spell, goading them with Huttese insults. Shud could tell it was a bad peddler's act; the accent was ghastly, and it was a common human belief that Huttese could act as a universal language in place of Basic in the lowest places in the universe.
The pilot waved off the wretch, and then pointed out to their charges how high the shanty walls of the trench reached these days. "When I was a youngling, a sturdy climber could reach the top of these and make better time crossing to the other side. Not so, these days." They kept pace, and were thankful the next ship was only a half-klick away instead of on the other side of the junker spaceport.
"Pardon me," another human voice came, though this one was far more civil and purposeful. "I'm sorry for the inconvenience, but we are checking baggage and documentation for anyone lifting off."
Shud looked to the voice and saw a human female, barely old enough for their species to be considered a matured adult. She wore a Republic uniform, something semi-formal in a light grey over beige, and carried a datapad. Shud had not panicked, but the Gand became distressed almost immediately, looking over to their keeper with as much desperation as their bugeyes could demonstrate. The landing platform was within shouting distance of them all. They had almost made it undetected.
"This clan has no belongings," the male Gand warbled unsteadily.
The Republic officer balked. "Carrying nothing? What is this, a religious pilgrimage or something?"
Shud laughed hard at the comment. Harder than one should. They felt the mistake only a moment too late, then decided to commit to it. "Hahaha, something close to that, as a matter of coincidence. These fine friends of mine were, ah," they struggled to find the word, and felt an involuntary tightening of the skin across their jaw. "Visiting. The pilgrimage is back to their kin, where they belong."
"Visiting...Kafrene? Really." The slack, pale face turned stern and the woman brushed dark brown curls from her eyes and scanned her datapad. "Might I scan your identification?"
The smallest of the three Gand trilled and bounced on her heels.
Shud tried their best, but started to stammer. "I-I-I believe Sector Authority can help with that. Spoke to an Ubese fellow who gave these three special refugee clearance. Not me, I'm just seeing them off. These are rough streets here, you understand."
"Refugee status? That's completely against protocol for a simple pleasure visit."
Over the officer's shoulder, an unassuming sight on the landing pad captured Shud's attention when an L-1g model droid staggered closer and closer to their exchange. The general purpose clanker was even older than Shud, and boasted a dark blue paint scheme across its casings with little lemon yellow streaks running up and down it. This was the other pilot in their relay, PV-21.
Shud used sheer will not to wave off the droid, lest the officer catch on to what was happening. Instead, they glared hard and tried to convey the message silently. It didn't help when Shud's face contorted and a more pronounced browline suddenly jutted out over their eyes.
"Good grief!" the Republic official recoiled. "Are you a shapeshifter?"
"Hey!" Shud snapped back. Their face returned to normal. "You don't use that word. I'm a Clawdite. My appearance is my business, savvy?"
The young woman blinked. "I meant no offense, please forgive me. You just startled me is all."
"Well...I am offended. So offended, in fact, I'm just going to turn back and take my dear little ones with me!" Shud seized the male Gand by the hem of his rough poncho and waved the others back. Before turning around completely, they could see that PV-21 had halted but was now standing aimlessly, wondering what to do next.
But the officer followed. "Wait just a minute! Nothing you're saying makes any sense!"
This is going to be one of those rotten days that never ends, Shud knew. "Uh, well...hmm." All that extra cargo around their belly was finally going to come in handy, at least. Twisting to put their body between the government agent and the three Gand, Shud actually shrugged apologetically before ramming one shoulder into the much smaller being as hard as possible.
The lithe little human rocked back on her heels and dropped her datapad before falling on her backside with an oomph of breath.
Shud grabbed the brother Gand roughly this time and shouted into his big multifaceted eyes, "This Gand needs to run, come on now!" And all four of them went careening off back into the crowded walkway, knocking persistent cart dealers and con artists out of the way with wild abandon.
Huffing and puffing within only perhaps a hundred steps, Shud grumbled. "I really don't like breaking the law. But you know, travel regulations are not the worst ones to break! Maybe they'll take it easy on me." The big Clawdite didn't even carry a blaster, so no one could call this 'armed assault' or 'armed resistance' or 'armed' anything. Right? Sure, Shud. Relax yourself on that basis. It's not like you just shoulder-tackled a human in uniform or something bad like that.
The little gang rounded a corner into an alley and flattened against the makeshift walls that looked like old pre-Empire durasteel plating. Unable to catch their breath silently, Shud hoped the hum of the ongoing marketplace would drown it out. They remained there until a clacking of boots echoed past the general noise, approaching from the direction of the platform.
The smallest of the Gand tugged at the utility vest Shud wore. Forgetting the language barrier, they leaned down to listen to her hushed thrumming of vocal distress. Big brother put his rough hands on the young one's shoulders to quell the speech, but Shud stared her in the eyes and listened. Small, breathy tones beat rhythmically from her. She was terrified, and what was more was that even Shud couldn't answer any questions even if they had the answers.
Fear was one thing, the anxiety of being nabbed by authorities. But the Gand had no clue where old Chancellor Mothma's sloppy hold on this sector would send them if they were detained. It was just as good a bet they would stay locked up on Kafrene indefinitely, or that they would be shipped off to a New Republic peacekeeping outpost as wards of the Senate. Gand was not a member planet, and never would be, the ammonia clouds hiding the entire species and their culture from any greater galactic hegemony. Chief among their cultural sticking points, the little insectoid race held no tolerance for clan members who left their home.
The cacophony of boots rumbled up to their alley and Shud watched as five New Republic agents trudged through the din of the main trench, brandishing stun batons. All of them were humans of at least ninety kilos, with broad shoulders and grim looks of determination. But after a moment, the pilot and their passengers breathed easy as the contingent kept moving past them.
Shud looked down their alley and tried to remember which direction the Purrgil Song was docked. If the Gand weren't able to board PV-21's transport, then Shud's little ship was their only way of escape. But before a proper course could be plotted in their head, they found their eyes drawn to something no one tended to see on Kafrene: white.
Specifically, Shud saw a humanoid shape up the slope of the alley wearing a stark, bone-white set of plate armor. And a matching domed helmet with dispassionate black eyes. Though the figure was solid of shape, Shud was certain they were looking at a ghost, and one whose presence was far less welcome than the Republic's penchant for arbitrary transit restriction.
The Empire had been dead for twenty years...but that right there was a shiny new stormtrooper, and no mistake about it.

2023 art review!
Even if this year wasn't the biggest on art, due to my physical condition (especially in last couple of months), it would still be nice to look back on what i did as an artist throughout it!
This is gonna be a fun ride...
So, let's dive straight into it, shall we?
Continuation under the cut
January
2023 started on a high note, with me just having finished the King piece, and moving on to the next big thing, being an AvA3/5 double piece.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sadly, during the process i messed up big time which led to me being unable to finish the piece the way i wanted to, rendering this project an eternal WIP. However, i still cherish the idea and do wish to either redraw, or complete it.
February
Doing 2 big projects one after another did end up affecting my overall drive, so i spent majority of that month just making sketches.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
First one is a little redraw/redesign of my old character - Derek, whom i used for a roleplay with my friends like 3 or 4 years ago, and second one is Deach, a character from my fantasy setting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also, back then i joined a new fandom, people in which have reminded me of my admiration for SCP, after which me and my friends proceeded to make OCs for it. Was a fun time! (Also this access card was sold by me as a YCH, sadly i couldn't really find buyers, so yikes)
March
By march is slowly started recovering from january's disappointement and was a bit more productive already. One of my friends really helped with it too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A musician friend of mine reached out to me, asking to develop a design for a villain character in the plot he was working on. After listening to the theme song i couldn't resist. This ended up being one of my favorite designs so far, and i adore its look in neon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the meantime, i kept working on my fantasy setting, refining more minor details of designs and stories, yet having to reserve only to making sketches as i was too busy with college and other projects. Characters you see on screen are Ian and Lanfor respectfully. One is a strong yet troubled mage and other is a great Emperor, and even better person.
April
I'd say april was one of the most productive months of this year, mostly because i managed to snatch some time for myself and my setting, which allowed me to complete two full pieces and achieve some extreme progress with my story.
Tumblr media
This piece is an illustration to a scene i wrote for two of the characters, Lanfor and Emile, called "Night Visitor". This was a scene of a reunion of two old friends. A bittersweet, yet a lovely work. Love both the written one as well as the illustration.
Tumblr media
This one was more of a... Proof of concept. Needed to test out the expresiveness of the design for one or a relatively new characters - Covlar. Was originally a simple sketch on paper, but i couldn't resist the urge of making it into a complete illustration. I then proceeded to make a few notes for this scene. Both want to write it properly and avoid it at all cost... Best to avoid it, for my own sanity.
May
May was a bit of trainwreck, because i got a brand new laptop, which took me quite some time to get used to and even more time to reassure myself that it is in fact alright for me to draw on this suspicioiusly thin piece of tech.
Tumblr media
Ironically enough, the only vomplete piece i drew that month was drawn on my old laptop. This screenshot redraw was to made to honour the premiere of AvA6 ep.1. Sadly, i did it a bit late because fo technical issues, but i still had a ton of fun doing it.
June
June was... Chaotic, to say the least. Mostly because i finally got comfortable with the new laptop and could now draw a lot more freely due to it being a lot more compact than the original one, which worked almost like a PC. Besides, i got a ton more free time because semester finals ended up being a breeze.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ended up making a ton sketches and doodles, that i didn't actually plan to finish, but still enjoyed a ton. Here are some of them
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then, ofc, the memes and the gand redesign, because AvA6 just had to break all of my portrayals. But, i mean, after AvM s3 my original designs did become a bit dated.
Tumblr media
The biggest pride and saddest of failures was this picnic piece, however. I still plan on finishing it, but it is hard doing so, when i have changed quite a bit of my artstyle by now.
July
July was quite lazy. Semester ended and i spent that entire month out of the city. It was a great time, very peaceul indeed.
Tumblr media
And again, that musician friend from before came into clutch, asking me to develop another design for his other project. And again a villain. He said he really liked how i draw bastard type of characters.
August
Well this is where fun began. End of summer break means i have just this much time to actually draw something i would never have time to draw normally.
Tumblr media
For me to draw something to commemorate a new episode is almost like a tradition at this point. And, given how long it's been since i made anything that would require effort, no wonder i have chosen arguably the most complex piece to pull off energy-wise. Yet i did and now i simply adore this piece, even if it did render me disabled. (I crunched through all of this piece, pulling off 40+ hours of work in just 4 days, so naturaly it ended up worsening my condition by a lot)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then i also proceeded to do all of these tiny side projects, like Victim ask, which i couldn't last long at due to my condition, and working on a design for my favourite streamer. (Which i cannot show as the work is not complete an it's best if i avoid spoilers)
September and October
These two months i spent being unable to draw at all via a doctor's advice. Arguably, these two were the hardest months for me to handle.
I assume you can imagine how hard it is to suddenly stop being able to do what you love, regardless of how much you wish to do it.
Novemer
*Nervous laughter* I... actually still wasn't allowed to use my hand, but that didn't stop me and i ended up making an entire series of sketches to celebrate AvA6 ep2.
"Small in big quantity will sure be less exhausting than a single big thing" - (C) Me, proably
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I will admit, i still adore all of these sketches and each of them deserves to become a fully fledged piece in it's own right, but i really better keep them as they are. For my own safety.
December
As you way have expected, this month will stay without a single thing from me. It's not because i don't want to, but because i can't. And, given the circumstance, it better stay that way.
Afterword
I finally got my diagnosis and soon enough i will start active treatment for my condition. It would be a shame to make this worse than it already is with impulses like those that happened in november, so i am making this post as a way to draw a line for myself.
It is still kinda crazy to realize that there are quite a few people interested in what i make, so i will make sure to take my recovery as responcible as possible, and then come back to you with even more art in the upcoming year! Let's be positive about it.

Any thoughts on Clone and/or Jedi language?
Too Many of them 😅
The biggest thing on my mind for trooper languages right now is that Jaster was a Journeyman Protector and so was Jango's bio dad, so Boba, the Alphas, and any CCs or CTs the Alphas trained directly most likely speak JP dialect Mando'a like Bacara does. I have sound change rules written up for converting standard Mando'a to JP but I need to finish transliterating the established dictionary before I can feed everything to Vulgar and generate the remaining vocabulary.
I think besides Mando'a, the clones probably haven't been exposed to many languages besides Galactic Basic and various common languages like Shyriiwook and Gand where the speakers can't translate themselves due to structural differences in the vocal tract.
For Jedi, I've created [counts on fingers] four? Sleheyr, Kimpian, Dyungzilyu - three! I've created three languages for various slave communities in the galaxy (inspired by fialleril's Amatakka) that are spoken by different members of the Jedi Order. Not all of them, as they're all closed languages, but enough that there's a sort of cultural exchange going on in the Temple. Those that aren't rescued slaves themselves are trusted rescuers who have been taught by Elders.
Sleheyr uses custom phenomes and is spoken by the Prosmyi (sky-children) of Sleheyron and is integral to my OC Taio Pallas. Kimpian uses Farsi phenomes for the most part and is spoken on Nar Shaddaa and in one of my WIPs, Nico Diath offers to get permission from an Elder to teach Eeth Koth, who was born a slave in my headcanon. Dyungzilyu uses Mandarin phenomes with slightly different spelling (but just as many diacritics) and is spoken on Bandomeer.
I'll actually share a snippet real quick. This is a giant time and dimension travel groupchat epistolary fic. This is 10yo Anakin (one year post-TPM) and 49yo Obi-Wan (eleven years post-RotS), while Taio is from 1½-2 years post-AotC and is the same age as the Anakin in her time. Aayla, Eeth, and the clones are from one year post-AotC while Nico is roughly three years pre-AotC.
Anakin Skywalker: Yithai, bliv gey yi kid muv beyng thev mim. Okay! I’m gonna practice it!
Taio Pallas: Don’t forget to tell your teacher that you want to meet me and Kalo, he’ll be able to schedule it with Master Nu. You’ll also need to tell him you have a tracker and need to have it removed, he probably doesn’t know.
Kenobi: I can confirm that he does not. Also, Anakin, if you want to get his attention, call him yēngun. It’s Dyungzilyu for teacher.
Taio Pallas: You too?
Kenobi: Unfortunately, I had an eventful Padawanship.
Windu: Bandomeer was your initiatehood.
Kenobi: That, too. Really, though, it was only a year.
Taio Pallas: Mine was only two, and I don’t remember it. You were trusted enough to be taught the language, which makes you one of us.
Aaylas’ecura: Ca jehsa eyi ca jehsa eyi ca jehsa eyi
Eeth Koth: Jee-jee vaa tula goola.
Anakin Skywalker: U settah huttese?
Eeth Koth: I do. I don’t remember if my people on Nar Shaddaa had their own language or what it was. I was three when my parents abandoned me on the streets instead of killing me like Master ordered, and four when I was Found. I only know that much because I told my Finder and they remembered and made sure to tell me when I was old enough to ask.
Nico Diath: Could’ve said something. You want Kimpian, I’ll see if I can find an Elder or Keeper on my way back to Coruscant, get permission to teach you.
Gree: So many culture, language, and history subchannels, this is great.
Taio Pallas: And of course the Vode are welcome, too, since you all come from a background of slavery.
8826: Well I wanted to but now that you’ve said something…
Gree: Don’t be a bastard, Neyo.
Bacara: He can’t help it, it’s his one setting.
Taio Pallas: I thought it was funny.
Anakin is practicing a Sleheyr greeting for meeting a fellow slave for the first time. Aayla is saying "one of us one of us one of us" in Ryl, and Eeth is saying "we can start a band" in Huttese, after which Anakin asks if he speaks Huttese.
I do also think the large number of languages spoken in the Temple results in a lot of mixed metaphors and a constantly developing creole formed primarily around Force-based jargon. Pretty much every Jedi is canonically multilingual, but this would be yet another reason for it.
Besides that, I'm a huge fan of the already existing Dai Bendu, which I hc is also a ceremonial language for Miralukka due to their shared history with the Jedi Order. (And I've crafted a fully developed Miralukkan common language as well. And a Kel Dor one. And a less developed Trandoshan one.)
If I let myself talk about languages any more, I'll never shut up. 😅 Thank you for the ask! This is one of my passions and another of my special interests (as I'm sure you cannot tell (sarcasm)) so I always love talking about it.

I’d like to submit my wonderful friend @findswoman’s work! Her masterlist is here. She specializes in writing OCs, the Ghost crew, and Zuckuss. Her main WIP is The Book of Gand, an origin story for Zuckuss.
HECK YES! I am all in on anything Rebels-related (I need to see my live-action found-family like yesterday), but I'm going to out myself as someone that had to Google who Zuckuss was (I'M SORRY, MY STAR WARS DEGREE IS NOT IN BOUNTY HUNTERS. I'M DOING MY BEST), but now I can say I am QUITE INTRIGUED. I do really love learning more about the different background bounty hunters (my husband is all about IG-88, so that may have started with him). Also, I am staring at that Lasan series with GREAT interest. This is such a cool and unique set of recs! Thanks so much for sending it in!
Participate in Fandom Friday to show your favorite creators from this week some love! :)

I’m pleased to announce that, after about seven years, I’m working on The Book of Gand again! (And it’s thanks to this WIP game!) I finished a chapter yesterday, and if all goes well, I hope to have part 3 complete by the end of the month. I’m going to wait until I finish a few more chapters before I begin posting anything, however, because I want to make sure I can keep this groove going.
But for now, the moral of the story is: keep playing those games, writers! Maybe they’ll motivate you to work on something you haven’t worked on in a while! 😁
