Join us for Spectre Week!

This is a fanwork event week celebrating the Ghost Crew from Star Wars Rebels, AKA the Spectres.

May 25-31, 2024.

No prompts! Just a theme: Tales of the Spectres.

Alllll the backstories! Inspired by the Star Wars animated Tales… series, our theme will focus on the Spectres’ lives before they became a crew, a team, and, in some ways, a family.

Each day of the event will feature works about the day’s Spectre:

Day One-Spectre One (Kanan)

Day Two-Spectre Two (Hera)

Day Three-Spectre Three (Chopper)

Day Four-Spectre Four (Zeb)

Day Five-Spectre Five (Sabine)

Day Six-Spectre Six (Ezra)

Day Seven-Free

The only limitations for fanworks are these:

Character: Feature one character per day, on the appropriate day.

Timeframe: Tell any part of their backstory that you want, from birth until just before Spark of Rebellion.

NSFW: This event is open to NSFW content, but please tag it as such and place it under a cut as needed.

Other than that, the rest is up to you! We’ll send out more info soon, but we hope that’s enough to get you started. If you have any questions, Just Ask!

🦴 ⇢ is there a piece of media that inspires your writing?

There are many, of many kinds! I mean, obviously, the Star Wars media universe in general is one of them. Beyond that, it’s hard to narrow down, as poetry, music, literature, and artwork of various eras have inspired me at various times. Recent inspirations have included a 1969 Greek protest song (coupled with a Benjamin Britten choral piece, in I Only Play), a sound sculpture at SFMOMA (Bright Sadness); and an entry in a 1932 glossary of place names in the state of Washington (Useless Bay).

🔪 ⇢ what’s the weirdest topic you researched for a writing project?

There have been many, but one of the goofiest recent instances was for Say Yah to da U.R., Eh!, for which I spent some time looking up tidbits about the humor, culture, and and in-jokes of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula (U.P.)!

🍓how did you get into writing fanfiction? 

It goes back at very least to my middle school and high school years, when I was into Star Trek: TOS and made up my own mental stories about what I would now call OCs. High school was when I began reading some of the Star Wars EU literature and things like the aliens and character guides and RPG guides, which got the wheels turning for things like the original version of The Book of Gand (which means that is a story that I have been working on some form for about 25 years). In the early 2000s I wrote and exchanged stories and chapters with a good friend who was also a fan of several of the same characters, and 2014 was when I started posting stories publicly.

🍄 share a headcanon for one of your favorite ships or pairings

Ah, is it OK if I give one for an EC-OC pairing? Because, since you asked, I think Zeb and Shulma, ever since their reunion soon after the Battle of Yavin, drink fancy coffee and tea together on their rooftop deck each morning (and the the fancy coffee is made in a glossy black Nespresso machine, as described here).

Thanks for asking this one; I need it right now! 🩷 (1) Spring is here; (2) I just had a very happy Purim during which I helped lead and coordinate the various services in the rabbi’s absence; and (3) my son’s birthday is coming up.

🐚 ⇢ do you like or dislike surprises?

It depends on the surprise. I typically like knowing what's going on, especially if it's something that will put attention on me in front of a group of people. (In person, to be specific.) Little things-- like someone surprising me with cookies or a treat or things of that nature-- I'm fine with.

🎲 ⇢ what stops you from writing more in your free time? 

Self-discipline, if I'm being honest. It's a lot easier to scroll the internet than it is to write. There are plenty of days I open up Tumblr or Discord for "just five minutes" and an hour has passed when I surface. (I am truly starting to feel like I literally waste my time when I do that and yet it's difficult to stop.) Sometimes, it's tiredness or exhaustion. I don't have the easiest job in the world and while my commute is much better than it was when I started this job, there are plenty of days I come home and want to do nothing taxing. Sometimes it's knowing that to properly write what I want to, I need to do a canon review and that ties into the tiredness part.

🌿 ⇢ give some advice on writer’s block and low creativity

It will pass. Sometimes you have to let things lie fallow for them to grow. Sometimes life will make it difficult or impossible to write. That's a tough one to accept (something I'm still working on myself!) but it's true. Sometimes the butt-in-chair method works; sometimes it doesn't. But mostly: in time, it will pass.

I have to recommend this Palo x Padmé AU oneshot by @findswoman! A beautiful portrait of the beginning of motherhood and finding new love in old places.

Dawwww this is so soft! I love how gentle Palo is, and also, I love an AU where Padmé is alive haha. This is such a sweet little fic, and it left me grinning. I adore seeing Obi-Wan's perspective on this as well, and how he's happy to see his friend happy. Thanks so much for sending this in!
