If you are still taking disability pride requests - service animal with a character of your choice?
"What do you mean it is no longer July?" they say, doing day 5 of their self-imposed October challenge.
It doesn't need to be July to draw any disabled characters, but your ask has been languishing in my inbox for ages. Part of it what that I couldn't figure out who to draw. Celegorm and Huan would have been a very obvious answer, but aside from the fact that I've already drawn them in this disabled characters series, it seemed just too obvious.
And of course, the concept of service animals could expand far beyond what it is in our world in fantasy, but I went with something fairly simple: Finduilas of Dol Amroth and her seizure cat.
Tumblr media
I love her and her family very much, though I had yet to draw her, so it's done! With a very big fluffy cat who, I think, also loves to sleep in baby Faramir's cradle.
I headcanon her as having the same foresight ability as Faramir, but stronger and less controlled, and entangled with epilepsy that she had from childhood. The sea air and easy acceptance of her family in Dol Amroth helped her, while Minas Tirith and the stifling surveillance of the court very much did not. I think Denethor truly loved her, though he perhaps did not love her very well, and she loved him, but her body was not strong enough to let her see her sons grow.

Obscure Tolkien Blorbo: Round 2
Thuringwethil vs Finduilas of Dol Amroth
Thuringwethil:
The vampire servant of Sauron whose cloak Lúthien uses as a disguise.
Her name means “Woman of Secret Shadow”, she's Sauron's herald, she takes the form of a vampire, it's implied she can shape-shift. Peak aesthetic!
Finduilas of Dol Amroth:
Wife of Denethor and mother of Boromir and Faramir.
Another tragic fridged mother :( she should never have left the seashore

Crownless highlights, season 4! (of 5, if you’re wondering) [1&2, 3]
This season’s central location is, at last, Minas Tirith
“I’m leaving, too,” Arwen had said at the end of last season (which, reminder: she spent most of disguised as a mortal woman, through careful use of covered ears and illusive Song). “When will I see you again?” Aragorn had asked. “Sooner than you think,” said Arwen.
Arwen, walking into the Tower of the Steward halfway through s4e1, in beautiful traveling robes and star-like gems in her hair: “Hello, I am Arwen Undómiel, daughter of Elrond Half-Elven, and I’d like to study in your library for a while. Do you mind?” [winks at Aragorn behind Ecthelion’s back]
(Side note: when people of Gondor reference Elrond, it’s like, “the wise and respectable mysterious Elf lord”, whereas when the northern Dúnedain reference Elrond, it’s like, “our wise and respectable collective great-great-uncle”)
Remember Roddis, the Ithilien Ranger from s2? She’s back in the main cast! Though, making this up as I go, i may retcon her family to well-off merchants rather than aristocracy—I wanted Aragorn to have a ready ally in Ecthelion’s court, but I think between Arwen, a little Finduilas, and Ecthelion himself (who recognizes his Nice Young Man energy and wonderfully developing leadership skills), he’s fine. She does come to court sometimes, but she’s more here (narratively) to introduce Aragorn—and Arwen—to the lower classes of the city.
Because Arwen is allegedly here for library research but really she’s here for much the same reason Aragorn is: she knows she likes him, but does she like the responsibilities that would come with him? Minas Tirith, Gondor, queenship….mortality.
Yeah, Arwen is just straight-up deuteragonist, maybe even co-protagonist this season
Dúnawen and Halbarad are officially demoted to secondary cast. They’re still around! Periodically Aragorn walks into a council meeting with Ecthelion and is like, “We should send a troop to investigate this one stream; my friend says a bird told her the water has gone bad.” And they’re hanging out in the lowest parts of the city, seedy bars and slums, which Aragorn also needs to get to know. Dúnawen and Roddis start to develop a romance (or not ‘til s5?) and Halbarad…Idk, but I want you to CRY when he dies in LotR.)
But they’re fundamentally here for Aragorn the Ranger, while Aragorn has more or less achieved that, and is now learning how to be Elessar the King. S4 is fully half monster of the week, half The West Wing-esque political/bureaucratic struggle of the week (often interwoven)
Denethor is still [passive-aggressive territorial cat noises] at Aragorn. Ecthelion is aware of this, but thinks his son and heir needs to figure out how to work with people just as competent as he is, and so is staying out of it.
Aragorn and Denethor start getting along better when the birth of Denethor’s second son makes him emotionally vulnerable for, like, 2 seconds. (Denethor had been slacking in husbandly/parental duties and this reminds him how important that is? Not, to be clear, that he doesn’t adore Finduilas and little Boromir. But that just drives him to work harder, as the world starts to creep darker…)
Of course, ironically, Faramir’s birth makes Finduilas’s already frail health decline further, making Denethor only more stressed (and we know from the future, eventually leading him to tragically resent Faramir…)
Arwen is drawn to Finduilas like a moth to a flame, by which I mean they have multiple intellectual/philosophical but also deeply personal conversations about mortality and other differences between Elves and Men (little Athrabeth joke there!). Also queenship and motherhood. Ecthelion’s wife died several years ago; Finduilas is the Lady of Minas Tirith, functionally Queen of Gondor. And motherhood is intricately linked to mortality for both of them: Arwen’s mother is…not dead, but close enough. Choosing mortality is choosing to never see her mother again. Meanwhile, motherhood is killing Finduilas, they both know it, despite Arwen’s best healing arts.
Finduilas correctly identifies that Arwen is seeking lessons in queenship, and that she and Aragorn have a mutual Thing, but doesn’t figure out the whole Isildur’s Heir thing. Arwen might imply that there’s some distant northern kingdom… (Fans will debate what exactly Finduilas guessed and never said)
The season finale is: there’s been trouble building all season with…Rhun? Near Harad and Khand? Both or all of the above? (And the Corsairs of Umbar are always making trouble, of course… (The truth is, they are all riled up by silver-tongued emissaries and shadow-carrying winds from Mordor.)
The attack comes through Rhun, though not from Rhun alone—either they let Haradrim pass through or it’s Rhunese funded partly by Harad…an unexpected direction, and they strike not at Gondor but at eastern Rohan. Aragorn and Denethor (and Halbarad, Dúnawen, maybe Roddis?) (maybe already all in northeastern Gondor for some reason?) take a large chunk of army to go to their ally’s aid, and they meet up with Thengel’s people and kick fucking ass. Classic Rohirrim PLUS Gondorin cavalry charge, total rout of the enemy, they won’t try this again…except King Thengel is slain in the field. It’s tragic, and Théoden is a young king (18-20 by now?), but Thengel was old and he died heroic as hell. They stay for the funeral; it’s stately and beautiful.
The battle is cut, however, with scenes from Minas Tirith of Finduilas falling faint, maybe even toddler!Boromir trying frantically to rouse her in their chambers, calling for his mother and for help. Arwen crushing athelas and singing softly over her in the infirmary, to no avail.
When our noble captains return home triumphant, Denethor is greeted by his father not with praise, but with sympathy and grief that makes Ecthelion for once look his old age. Ecthelion is holding little Faramir in his arms; Boromir, red-eyed and starting to cry again, runs from clutching his grandfather’s leg to his father’s. From behind the family, Arwen meets Aragorn’s gaze with similar grief.

It's been bugging me lately that I can't think of any more casual words for 'mother' that are used in Middle Earth, like an equivalent of Mum/Mom. For example, what would Gondorian kids like Faramir and Boromir be calling their mum? Like they're not going about the place calling her 'mother' all the time surely?
I often struggle with figuring out what children might plausibly call their parents because "Mum" and "Dad" sound much too modern (and are too modern for Gondor, since "mum" and "dad" were first recorded being used in our world in the 16th century). But "Mother" and "Father" often feel too formal and stilted.
As a comparison, I did a quick search through ROTK to see what Faramir calls Denethor when addressing him directly, and it looks like he does just use "father":
"'If what I have done displeases you, my father,' said Faramir quietly, 'I wish I had known your counsel before the burden of so weighty a judgement was thrust on me.'"
"'I would ask you, my father, to remember why it was that I, not he, was in Ithilien.'"
"'May I have your leave, father?'"
Of course, all of these scenes are when Faramir is an adult and others are present, and Faramir and Denethor are speaking formally and largely as captain and lord (and also use those terms when referring/speaking to each other). But it does give precedent to Faramir and Boromir possibly having called Finduilas simply "Mother."
One more important thing to consider is that they're the sons of the Steward. In medieval times and earlier, it was common among nobility and higher classes for children to refer to their parents as just "Mother" or "Father" or "lord" or "lady" (or their parents' full titles if other adults were present).
So I do think it's likely that Boromir and Faramir called Finduilas "Mother" even as kids because of their family's position. I'm sure when they were first learning to talk they used something more garbled and informal, but as they got older, it was probably just "Mother."
For lower-class children, I think you could use "Ma," "Mama," or even "Mammy" (and likewise "Pa" or "Da" for fathers). They all pass as "older"-sounding words to modern readers and wouldn't be too jarring to read in dialogue or prose.
I think Ma/Mama/Mammy would work when writing hobbits, too. (Although, interestingly, hobbits seem to only refer to their mothers as "mother," but they use "dad" when referring to fathers. Still, if they canonically use "dad," I don't think using Ma/Mama/Mammy would look out of place.)
Elves and dwarves, of course, have Sindarin/Quenya and Khuzdul/Neo-Khuzdul (fan-created) names for parents that you could use in lieu of "Mother" and "Father."

Canon characters in my fic who need faceclaims:
(might be in need of a few updates, depending on how many canon book only! characters I actually end up including)
Ioreth
In my fic, she's Elenna's nursemaid and the self-proclaimed head of her household. She was lady-in-waiting to her grandmother, the Lady Finduilas of Dol Amroth and supervised her children's education.
Born: TA 2960 (is she really this young? Ioreth literally means 'old woman')
Died: FoA 39
Fancast: Harriet Walter
Tumblr media
Prince Imrahil of Dol Amroth
Prince of Dol Amroth, Elenna and Elboron's great-uncle. He loves Faramir's children deeply and they love him back (Elenna constantly asks him for stories and anecdotes about her grandmother)
Born: TA 2955
Died: FoA 34
Fancast: Jeremy Irons
(in his youth: Eric Bana)
Tumblr media
Princess Finduilas of Dol Amroth
Imrahil's older sister. Elenna is said to be her spitting image, but she doesn't really believe it nor does she see the resemblance. She was Boromir and Faramir's mother and was married to Denethor, Ruling Steward of Gondor during the War of the Ring (though she was long dead by then)
Born: TA 2950
Died: TA 2988 (aged 38)
Fancast: Beren Saat
Tumblr media
Elboron Faramirion
Elenna's younger brother and heir to the House of Stewards. She calls him sunshine. He's ten years her junior.
Born: FoA 11
Died: unknown
Fancast: Eoin Murtagh (toddler)
Toby Regbo (adult)
Tumblr media
Eldarion Telcontar
Firstborn son of King Elessar and Queen Arwen Undómiel, he's the Crown Prince of Gondor and Arnor. Engaged to Elenna, he eventually marries Ilmarë, the Handmaiden of Varda.
Born: FoA 1
Died: FoA 220
Fancast: Henry Cavill

I'm thinking about Denethor loving Finduilas, more than anyone except maybe Boromir. Finduilas, whose life we know little about, but who was gentle, beautiful, and sensitive to the sea/the Shadow from Mordor/the bleakness of the city-fortress she ended up in/the effects of the palantír on Denethor himself.
It is very obvious, IMO, that the description of Finduilas is meant to call back (or forward) to Faramir—he's repeatedly described as "gentle" and though his distaste for war is more muted, it's clearly there. But these Finduilas-like aspects of his character only make him more frustrating for Denethor, who loved Finduilas so much.
At the same time, Faramir's resemblance to Finduilas in these respects is mingled with a lot of resemblance to Denethor himself. Denethor is described as wise, valiant, and tall, with great strength of will, and gifted beyond other men of his time—except Faramir. They're lovers of lore, they're keenly intelligent, they're resolute in their decisions. Even their mutual sense of rejection by each other and pain over it are similar! Denethor repeatedly harps on his belief that Gandalf has stolen Faramir's love for him, while Faramir has to be reminded by Gandalf that Denethor loves him.
And I actually do think Denethor loved Boromir more, but that this does not mean his love for Faramir was not also very profoundly felt, yet their relationship was such that it seems inexpressible for them. And this is made still worse by the revelation that Denethor, who is also frustrated by the very ways that Faramir most resembles him, was himself less favored by his own father than Aragorn. I mean, Aragorn!! Back then, he was just some guy who showed up to pitch in against Mordor and was a great captain and advisor. That's cool, but favoring Some Guy over your son—especially when they're very similar and give nearly identical advice—is ... wow.
So Denethor knows at least as much as Faramir what it's like to be less favored, and yet he replicates that dynamic as much as is really possible with his own sons. And it's Faramir who is "the Denethor" in the later dynamic. Gandalf even suggests that Denethor loved Boromir so much because Boromir wasn't like him.
And I don't think there's any textual suggestion that Boromir is truly the one like Finduilas, either. For as much as Faramir resembles Denethor far more than Boromir did, I think he's also suggested to be more like Finduilas than Boromir, as well. It's the mixture of Denethor's own (valued but also kind of despised) qualities with Finduilas's that makes Faramir so intensely difficult for Denethor to deal with. I know I've talked about the tragedy of their relationship a lot, but there is something so distinctly and terribly tragic about all this. :(

@lotrladiessource here’s the last one for today. All caught up with Day 4: 100 words of women of the south (Finduilas of Dol Amroth, in case I haven’t broken your heart enough today).
If she closes her eyes, the wash of the river against Osgiliath’s bridges might almost be the sound of the tides changing in the estuary. The crows’ calls might, with enough imagination, echo the gulls. But there is no substitute for the salt air, the shifting light over the water, the endless open expanse of the sea-facing sky. There is Elvish blood in Dol Amroth, the old tales say. Finduilas knows it in her bones. The longing has its claws in her, bleeding her dry. No matter her intention, her feet lead her West, and her heart follows, crying goodbye.

Throwback Thursday time is an illusion
Thank you @searchingforserendipity25 for the tag! <3
I've only recently started writing fic again, but I'll go for Too Burdened to Fly, the first (coherent) Lord of the Rings fic I wrote, exploring Finduilas' emotional state on the night of her death. Finduilas is one of those characters that I wish we knew more about and it was such an experience digging into her psyche.
I am dying. She was dying, finally. Finally. She wished she could feel relieved. It was almost over. And yet she could not. Her head slid to the side and in the darkness she made out the spiked shape of a pot full of lilies which the boys had brought her. You cannot leave them. They brought you flowers. Her heart felt heavy as a stone, an unwelcome weight dragging at her chest. She wished that they were here. She could imagine them, huddled about her the way they had when they were small. Faramir cuddled close to her chest, his head resting against the hollow of her neck, Boromir curled inside the curve of her legs. They had asked once, she was not sure when, if they could stay the night with her. She had been drifting, her head to one side, their voices distant as through a heavy fog. It was only when their father said no that she felt the ache in her chest. Yes. I would have liked that. The chance to hold them close, to feel their heartbeats. To run her fingers through their soft hair one last time. Maybe that was why Denethor denied them. He feared he would see the finality in her gestures and then he would know that the end was near.
tagging @glorf1ndel @vampiresuns @from-the-coffee-shop-in-edoras if you'd like to do this and haven't already!

saw you post this ask game and blacked out briefly. 🐅 💖 💛 talk to me about denethor….
🐅(characterisation): Lore and history has always been Denethor’s joy. It became common early in his rule for people to bring family heirlooms or tales of their ancestors, to seek the truth behind them. This frustrated Denethor’s counsellors, but was a welcome break from the tedium of mediating disputes and stress of planning for war. He later banned this, as it became too distracting once the war became more serious and demanded more of his time.
💖 (romantic relationships): Finduilas and Denethor’s marriage was a political one, but not in the usual sense. They were drawn to each other because of their beauty and their shared yet different strangeness (Denethor being very Númenorian, Finduilas very elvish). But both also agreed that cooperation between Minas Tirith and the coast was essential in the coming crisis, and saw the other as their perfect political partner. Denethor is all cunning, a brilliant administrator and military planner, but his forcefulness and brusqueness tends to ruffle more than a few feathers. Finduilas was a master of public relations and diplomacy, building and keeping the coalition that Denethor puts to work. Her death was a massive blow-personally and politically.
Thorongil (I know you’re waiting for this!): It’s such a fraught thing, not just between them but the triangle they form with Ecthelion as well. It is such an underrated ship, though I go back and forward on if it was consummated (maybe only once?).
The awful dynamics. They look like close kin, the absolute narcissism of it. Yet under all of that they agree on almost everything. They’re fighting this terrible battle of wills in the narrowest of margins. I do think part of this is Denethor’s relationship with his own father (I’m going to post something about that soon don’t worry!) It’s a proxy battle as well, Denethor vs Ecthelion, Ecthelion doesn’t want to depend on his son, and so turns to Thorongil. Denethor is therefore faced with a choice, defeat Thorongil or claim him for himself. I think in the end Thorongil manages to disentangle himself from this a little bit, and it’s part of the reason he leaves when he does. I also think Finduilas resembles Arwen (I think Arwen is called Finduilas in a draft?) and seeing Denethor and Finduilas marry is a big thing for Thorongil in many ways, but it is also part of his cue to get out.
💛 (familial relationships): I’ve talked quite a lot about Denethor and his sons, and I’m currently finalising a post about his relationship with his father, so lets go for his sisters! We know he had two older ones.
The eldest (Andreth) I imagine as being quite like him, scholarly, stern and proud. Denethor in youth followed her into the guild of loremasters. She was one of three referees on his entry. Any rumours of nepotism were quickly snuffed out-she proved by far the strictest, saying that Denethor’s lore was merely ‘passable’, though the others were highly impressed. To Denethor though, this was the highest praise he had ever been given. The two did grow much closer after this, and she was one of the pillars of Denethor’s life. Between them they wrote much, particularly on the history of the Húrinionath. She never married and was evacuated with the other women and children before the Battle of the Pelennor fields, much to her fury. She never returned to Minas Tirith.
The younger (Nimloth) was more adventurous. It was she who first took Boromir climbing in the White Mountains, though in youth Denethor and Andreth had often joined her. Friendly enough, not nearly as intimidating as her siblings, but not usually sociable, preferring her own or very close company. Was actually quite close with Thorongil for a time, some speculated they would marry (though in truth she had no interest in men). She died during an expedition early in Denethor’s rule. Her body was never recovered (Denethor forbade Boromir, and Andreth forbade Denethor), but Denethor and Andreth both had visions of her death.

Obscure Tolkien Blorbo: Round 1
Finduilas of Dol Amroth vs Findis
Finduilas of Dol Amroth:
Wife of Denethor and mother of Boromir and Faramir.
Another tragic fridged mother :( she should never have left the seashore
Findis:
The elder daughter of Finwë and Indis. She stayed behind in Aman during the Flight of the Noldor.
Findis! The oldest responsible sibling is very relatable, she probably has had to deal with so much bullshit and I feel that. She was given her parents ship name as a name. She stayed in Valinor with her mother and Finarfin, which was smart. We don’t know much about her, but I love some of the headcanons people have come up with about her personality. Findis stayed sane when having to deal with her crazy brothers and sister. Tired responsible eldest (of Indis’ kids) sibling for the win. Love her

You are not obligated to like everyone you meet. It doesn't mean that you’re doing anything wrong if sometimes you just don't get on that well with somebody. It takes all different kinds of people to make the world work, and not every one of those people are going to want to be friends. That’s only natural, after all. As long as you treat someone with respect and they do the same for you, you’re doing a great job. You can’t, and probably shouldn’t, be best buds with everyone, because then it wouldn’t mean anything at all. Remember, disliking or feeling neutrally about a person is not a sign you need to try harder or an indicator that you aren’t kind. It’s just a normal part of existing with other people.
xoxo,
Finduilas of Dol Amroth
