Song 17: Here Comes a Thought from Steven Universe vol. 1
Falling In Love Will Kill You WC: 678 TW: Burn
“Go! Away!” Mara shouted. Every particle of her being radiated with rage. The force of her words and anger would have manifested as surely as Cal’s own fire if she were a demon.
Caldizaar’s first reaction was to meet her anger with his own. Humans and their screaming. Their primal fear would have normally given him glee at the opportunity to snuff out the life of just another nameless, faceless human.
But Mara wasn’t just another human. He knew her. He knew her name and her face and he knew that red was her favorite color. He knew her birthday was June 13th, and he’d met her best friend. To him, Mara was the one that made everything worth it. Made breaking the rules, staying on earth, learning about humans, a pleasure rather than a dreaded form of captivity.
The last time she had told him to leave was still early. Early enough that popping back into the Void for a bit wasn’t looked at. It was insignificant. But now? Months later, and after the date of Mara’s original death? Returning now was unthinkable. And so he walked away. Horns obscured, his flaming core hidden beneath a shirt. He walked past the park, past all of the places he and Mara had visited. Past the festival grounds that Mara had saved their wristbands from.
He walked until the city lights began to fade. He walked until he found a lone streetlamp that was the only place that hadn’t been swallowed by darkness. He slid down to the base of it and peeled his shirt off. His glow erupted from his back and poured beyond the feeble reaches of the streetlamp. He balled his shirt up, shoving it between his teeth and biting down to smother his scream. Tears like fire dripped down his cheeks to fleck the backs of his wrists and hands.
When his phone buzzed he jumped so high he fell over. He scrambled to get it out of his pocket. There was a single text, not from Mara, but from her best friend, Devi.
What the fuck did you do
Cal sighed and pulled his shirt back on before answering.
We fought
No shit. I’ve heard her side of it, now I want to hear yours before I have to figure out how to kill a demon
He sighed and ran his hand over his face to wipe away any lingering tears. A small huff of a laugh found its way out when he realized that wiping tears away was a human thing. Demons didn’t need to wipe their tears, if any of them ever cried at all. The easiest thing would have been to heat his skin enough to reabsorb or evaporate the tears. But months with humans, months of watching Mara dry her tears and learning how to do that for her, had infected him just like every other thing she did.
She wanted me to go to some sort of ..what did she call it? A holiday? I refused. She kept saying that everyone wants to meet me but I do not like the idea of being in small enclosed places with humans.
You sure that’s all it was? She told me you hurt her, Cal.
Caldizaar’s stomach turned. He hadn’t realized at first that he’d even done it. Hadn’t realized until her scream. When she pulled away from him, he finally spotted the glowing handprint on her wrist. It had been hotter than he’d ever been with her and he hadn’t even realized it. Her skin was already bubbling as she stumbled away from him.
I hadn’t meant to. Didn’t even realize I had until it was too late. I burned her wrist. Bad.
That’s what I thought. You asshole.
Devi I don’t know how to fix this.
Stay the fuck away from her is how you fix it
He sat there, head tipped back, watching the stars out past the glow of the streetlamp. When he was able to finally look away he sent one more text to Devi.
Okay.

Breath So Shallow
I have never breathed so shallow
As if my hate for you has sunken into my skin
And flowed into my lungs
Creating a recked humid habitat for mold
To fill up my pretty lungs
It’s not fair
Your hair slipping down my throat
Strangling me
I don’t sing anymore
So only dust is left to pour
And fill up my pretty lungs
And although loving you felt like dying
Hating you is a cruel state of living
A punishment
For doing what’s right.
To be left with the broken parts
Of what I broke free of
And to try and use those pieces
To make myself live wholly again
To make myself love wholly again
To make myself whole again
Not whole enough to breath
For to breathe into broken glass
To heal and work its structure into unity
Is to torch it in flames hot as my love once was
That now burns a hole into my heart with agony
Branded by your heavy handed
Apathy
To keep the glass broken is to keep it cold
To keep it soothing to the skin
Instead of charring spoilt fingertips
So I don’t breathe warmth into these pieces
Each puff of air stings like a house of smoke
So I breathe so shallow
To not sink too far into the deep end
Of your harm

Warning?: Public sex
“Caalllldizaaaar,” Mara hummed, “Do you want to know a secret?”
“What is a secret?”
“It’s something you don’t tell just anyone. You tell someone you’re close to, or sometimes you just never tell anybody, depending on what your secret is. I think you’ll like my secret though.”
“I usually like the things you tell me. What is this one?”
Mara looked around, a mischievous grin on her face, “Come here, we can’t let anyone but us find out.” She raised onto her tiptoes so she could whisper in Cal’s ear. “I’m not wearing any panties.”
He looked at her, eyes wide with surprise. “And why aren’t you,” he hissed.
Mara couldn’t help but sway her hips. Caldizaar’s gaze tracked her hungrily. “I thought we could try fucking on that bench over by the pond.” She indicated with her head where it was. “It’s not visible by traffic, and we’re not right next to the walking path. So long as we keep quiet no one would even know.”
“What about getting arrested?”
“That’s the fun of it, don’t you think?” Her eyes twinkled. “Here in public, in broad daylight where anyone could catch us.”
“This is unexpected, Mara. Weren’t you against this entire,” he waved his hand in uncertainty, “thing only a week ago?”
“If you don’t want to, then we don’t have to.”
“I did not say that.”
She pulled him down into a kiss before sauntering off to the bench. Cal easily caught up with her.
“How would we do this?”
Mara looked up at him, her smile wide enough to show her teeth. “It’s not hard. I sit on your lap, you ‘adjust’ yourself and then you hold me close while we rock together.”
“And you’re sure we won’t get caught?”
“That’s the thrill of it though, isn’t it?”
Cal rolled his eyes. “You’re such a strange human.”
Mara couldn’t help but laugh, “We’ll be fine.” She danced the rest of the way to the bench. “Be a good boy and hold me while I sit on you?”
The edges of Cal’s glow began to peek over the edge of his shirt collar. “I would do anything you ask me to, my daisy.”
Mara kissed him again before he sat down. She flared her skirt and dropped into his lap. Cal’s hands fumbled between them, his knuckles sliding against her, and then he paused.
“Mara,” he hissed.
She tilted her head back to look up at him, “It’s on the lowest setting. Figured it would make things easier.”
“You are full of wonders.” He kissed her on the nose. “So what should I-?”
“We could leave it in. Have a little extra fun.” She slid her hips back against him.
His glow flooded his throat, “Mara,” his voice was strained as he tried to hold back a moan.
Mara reached up and pulled his head down so that she could speak directly in his ear, “You’ll have to keep control of yourself, puppy. Can’t have you outshining the stars right now.”
Cal took a deep breath and then another. His glow faded as it retreated back under his shirt. She was practically dripping onto his hand. Another shift and he was inside her. Mara let out a sigh it seemed like she’d been holding in forever. The vibrator hummed against him, sending a jolt through his core. He dared not move while she made herself comfortable in his lap.
Her hand still in his hair, she murmured, “Be a good boy for me now, okay?”
Caldizaar swallowed a whine as she let go of him. His first thrust was timid, barely more than resituating himself. Mara’s hands found his and she wrapped his arms around her. She slid her hips forward, raising herself up a little before sliding back down. Cal choked on his moan.
“Remember to be quiet. We’re just enjoying a day at the park.”
“I would say that we are doing much more than that.”
She slid her hips up and back again. A breath panted out of her as Cal met her movements. “That’s a good boy.”
When he bent his head into the crook of her shoulder, lips trailing kisses across her skin, he felt a shiver race through her.
“You feel amazing,” he thrust into her. Another breath burst from her throat. “Your vibrator feels amazing,” he trailed his tongue up her neck.
Mara could barely contain her moan. She began to roll her hips steadily against him. Cal easily followed the pace she set, their heavy breaths coming out in-sync with each other.
“Cal, I-”
“I know, daisy. I am too.” He pressed one hand against her lower abdomen.
A moment later Mara laughed as she came. A couple on the other bank glanced up at them and returned to their conversation. She could feel the heat flare through Cal as he came. His whine muffled against her skin.
“I hope,” he took a deep breath, “I hope you’ll be up to more when we get home.”
Mara pulled her phone out of the pocket of her skirt and pulled up the app that let her switch the vibrator off. She relaxed into his chest. They sat quietly while they waited for their breath to return. When she could, Mara turned her head up to kiss him.
“We’ll straighten up when they leave.”
Cal nodded, “I could stay like this forever.”
“If you stay like this forever, we can’t go home for round two,” she teased.
“As always, I must submit to your wisdom.”
“And that doesn’t bother you anymore?”
“You know I would submit myself to anything you wished. So long as it came from your lips.” He kissed her.
