Show Me What You’re Proud Of
RULES: It’s time to love yourselves! choose your 5 (ish) favorite works you created in the past year (fics, art, edits, etc.) and link them below to reflect on the amazing things you brought  into the world in 2020. Tag as many writers/artists/etc. as you want  (fan or original) so we can spread the love and link each other to  awesome works.
@sister-dear did this and tagged all their mutuals who create things! Took me a moment before the realization hit me that, oh shit, I’m a mutual who creates things. Sooo here we go! Super nervous for some reason jdkjkqwdm.
I haven’t posted a lot of stuff publicly, let alone actually made things in general, and as far as writing goes I don’t have anything finished yet, but I used this opportunity to create a new art & writing blog (@echoing-creations) so I can hopefully start posting some WIPs and short snippets of stuff there from now on! ^^ Otherwise, I’m just gonna try my best to show what I have.
WRITING:
Again, I don’t really have anything posted or even finished yet (at least that I’m proud of). But I’ll share two WIPs/sneak peeks of the LU longfic that I’ve been working on these past couple of months. Because I’m pretty proud of some of the scenes that I have written so far! Unfortunately I’m limited in my choice of what I can include, because spoilers, but here’s what I’ve got. (They’re still very subject to change.)
- “Everything Goes Away” - Prologue
He was in control now. Not some selfish deity or petty goddess. For once, his destiny didn’t have to be set in stone. He could rewrite his story, re-weave the strings of fate. And it all started with a single thread.
Forgive me.
- EGA - Chapter 3
A cacophony of sound broke out around them as the other heroes’ reactions grew muddled together and incoherent. All the while, Legend and Warriors didn’t move, didn’t blink. The world was a swirling vortex of noise around them, a raging whirlwind of confusion and betrayal, and the two heroes stood in the center of it all, the eye of a hurricane, frozen in time. Frantic colors and voices spun around them like a cyclone in motion, tasting of forgotten courage and broken promises.
But all storms came to an end. As the tempest of sound and color died down into a suffocating silence and the world stopped spinning and lulled to a halt, a single whisper rang out louder than a gunshot, piercing the air and finally forcing Legend to break eye contact with Warriors.
“Why?”
ART:
- BotW Link - Wow, the only thing on this list that I actually have a link for! This post never kicked off, which kinda sucks, because I can’t even begin to describe how ridiculously proud of it I was (and still am). It took me ages and I put in so much more effort than I thought I would going into it. But I don’t really mind that nobody saw it, because I love it and that’s all that matters! It was all a big experiment (particularly with drawing humans) but I’m very happy with the outcome :)
Ummm I’m not really that proud of anything else I’ve posted, and there’s a lot of stuff I’ve drawn that I’m not ready to share with people yet cause I’m kinda self conscious, BUT I do have a couple of drawings that I still really like!
- First one is a ref for a Warrior Cats OC that I’ve had for... ah, almost as long as I’ve been drawing, actually. She’s a favorite between my and my irl friend, and she’s gone through so many redesigns I can’t even keep track, lol. This is definitely my favorite design of her by far, though, and is probably gonna stick for quite a while.
- Second one is just a random doodle of my catsona. Honestly not much to say about it. It was done for my part of an animation meme collab for a friend’s birthday a while back, and I kept the drawing because I really liked how it turned out. I honestly kind of want to redraw it soon with an updated version of my sona’s design and use it as my tumblr icon? Maybe? 👀 I’ve been wanting draw my own banner for a while now, so maybe this can be part of my blog makeover, lol.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And that’s that! Not much, I know. I spent all evening trying to pull together scraps of stuff I could maybe share, but chickened out of showing most of it in the end. I’m kind of shocked at how little I actually created this year. I feel like my art has been at an all time low recently. I just haven’t really been drawing as much. Hopefully giving myself time and distance from it will help me to gather the motivation to pick it up again soon and be able to look at it without judging myself too harshly. As for my writing... I’ve definitely written more frequently this year than I have for a long time, even if I have nothing to show for it. I’ve been finding myself using my writing as an outlet a lot more recently than I did in the past, and I’ve been getting better at writing things down rather than just daydreaming them and letting the scenes float away into the void of my mind, lol.
Tagging all of my own mutuals (and followers!) who are creators!! Share what you’re proud of, even if it’s small <3

A time travel au. angst and h/c. inspired by this post
Warnings: jon’s very low self-esteem
“What do you think of him?” Jon suddenly asks, staring blankly at the wall of the breakroom.
Tim pauses in the middle of chewing his sandwich to give him a long, considering look.
He’s mostly decided to suspend his disbelief until further notice, simply to keep from losing his mind. What else is one supposed to do when future versions of Jon and Martin, who are also apparently dating, tell you that your workplace is currently involved in a plot to end the world? Ideally he would’ve processed one big revelation at a time, but apparently they don’t have time for that, so goodbye grip on reality, it was nice knowing you. I’ll hit the restart button as soon as things start making sense again.
Tim wipes his hand across his mouth, swallows, and asks, “You mean Jon II?”
Jon rolls his eyes, like Tim’s being obtuse on purpose just to annoy him. “Yes, I mean...him. Me. Jon II.” Then his nose wrinkles amusingly, the same way it always does whenever he says the moniker. He’s hated it since the beginning, but it was a battle he quickly lost, what with all three of his assistants opposing him.
Normally, Tim wouldn’t have thought twice about shrugging and answering, but...Jon’s been uncharacteristically quiet lately. Oh sure, he’d blushed up a storm upon learning that his future self and Martin were dating, and he’d expressed his own misgivings at the beginning, but...since then he’s been eerily, silently watchful. In Tim’s experience, when presented with this sort of puzzle Jon generally buries himself in research, and doesn’t emerge until he’s good and ready to do so.
There’s something else on his mind.
So Tim puts down his sandwich and gives himself a moment to think carefully through his response. “I mean...he’s a lot like you, obviously. But he seems…” What’s a polite way to say, the trauma and the boyfriend seems to have made him a little more easygoing? He certainly smiles more freely than he ever has, which...honestly, makes Tim want to cry sometimes. How horrible, that so much abject cruelty had just made him more kind. “...tired. A little less high-strung?”
“I see,” Jon says, turning his mulish gaze to his curry, dragging his spoon through the thick sauce.
Tim waits a beat longer, but when nothing else seems forthcoming he prompts, “Why do you ask?”
Jon’s reaction is only to press his lips into a thin, tight line. Tim knows this mood; he’s weighing how insecure he’ll look if he says whatever’s actually bothering him out loud, versus how much he wants someone else to hear it. Pushing him now will only make him clam up, so Tim just waits.
Tim’s patience is rewarded when Jon blurts, “But you like him. You...you all do.”
“Yes,” Tim says slowly, because it’s true. Martin’s so enamoured with a Jon that actually likes him that he keeps bringing him tea just to get another glimpse of that gentle, thankful smile, just to strike up another conversation about nothing. Sasha has decided that he’s the most interesting thing that’s ever happened to her, and insists on consulting him whenever she reads a new true statement.
Tim’s personally a little unnerved by the awful, sad way future Jon looks at him sometimes, or the way he flinches back whenever someone tries to touch him without warning. But he’d taken Tim aside and quietly explained everything he knew about what happened to Danny, so.
Oh, Tim thinks, feeling like an idiot for not realizing it sooner. Jon may be an old hand at fooling others with his grumpy persona, but Tim knows that he’s just using it to hide his massive inferiority complex. “Wait, are you jealous?”
Jon ducks his head, and his ears darken. Gotcha, Tim thinks.
“Jon, you know that that’s still you, right?” he explains gently, quietly relieved that it’s not something more complicated. “We like him just as much as we like you, because you’re the same person.”
“But he’s not the same, is he?” Jon protests. “Look at the scars on his neck, on his hand. And he has panic attacks, and he flinches at loud noises, and, and—”
He breaks off, biting down hard on his lip, threading a hand through his hair.
Tim stares at him, feeling off-kilter, like he missed a step coming down the stairs. That doesn’t sound like jealousy. “...Jon?”
Jon shakes his head, his breath escaping him in thready, devastated gasps.
He can’t tell what’s going on in Jon’s head, and it’s starting to scare him. “I can’t help you if you don’t tell me what’s wrong.”
Jon just sits there for a moment long, tugging at his hair, staring sightlessly at the middle distance. Tim gently untangles his fingers, giving him something a little more solid to hold onto.
“You all like him,” he says at last. “You all...he’s so kind, and he’s funny, and you like him, because someone hurt him first. He’s different—we’re different—because someone cut our throat and burned our hand, and you like him better.”
Tim’s horrified. “Jon—”
“Should I accept that?” he continues, the words flooding from him like a dam finally exploding in a shower of groaning wood and weathered stone. “Do I—how do I carry on knowing that I could be the person I want to become, if only I give myself to monstrosity, if only I let myself be hurt like that?”
“Of course we’re not going to let that happen to you!” Tim interrupts, voice higher and more frightened than he meant it to be. He’s applying duct tape to a raging river. He has no fucking idea how to fix this. “You don’t deserve—”
“Don’t I?” Jon demands, whirling on him, eyes flashing. “Don’t I deserve to be happy? Or am I unworthy of even this kind of improvement? Am I doomed to be like this forever?” Tears well in his eyes, spill over. “Don’t I deserve it?”
And then he slowly, inevitably, dissolves into tears, his slim shoulders shaking as he curls over and buries his face in his elbow. Tim drapes an arm across his back, angling his body so he can gently tuck Jon’s head against his shoulder. He doesn’t know what else he’s supposed to do. Even if Jon were in any shape to hear it, he has no idea how to fix this.
Tim could tell him that he and Martin and Sasha all think that he’s fine the way he is, and it’s the stress of an apparently eldritch job that’s causing him to push people away, but he doubts Jon would believe it. Words mean nothing when actions have been screaming something entirely different all this time, and Jon’s always been more observant than they give him credit for.
“Oh, Jon,” he whispers when the tears finally start to slow, dropping a kiss onto silver and black hair. “I’m sorry. I didn’t know that you felt that way.”
Jon pulls away and shrugs, averting his reddened eyes. Tim squeezes his elbow to prevent him from retreating entirely. They sit like that for a moment, Jon going very still and very tense under Tim’s hand, settling into the vulnerability like an open wound.
“I’m sorry,” Jon says finally, sniffing heavily. He’s aiming for his usual brusque, dry tone, but his voice is shaking, and he’s not fooling anyone. “That was unprofessional of me.”
Before Tim can stop himself, an incredulous laugh rips out of him. “Jon,” he says quickly, “We’re well beyond professional. You know that, right? You don’t have to hide from me.”
Jon flushes. “Yes, well—it was unfair for me to put this on you, as your fr—as…” His expression goes all fragile and uncertain, and Tim’s heart aches.
“It’s not unfair,” Tim corrects gently. “As your friend,” and here he pauses for emphasis, “I want to know when you’re feeling like this.”
“Oh,” Jon murmurs, then straightens and scrubs the teartracks from his cheeks. “Oh.”
Tim nods reassuringly, takes a deep breath, and makes an educated guess. “I know you’re scared, Jon. We all are. This place is...horrible, and seeing what you went through is...terrifying. I can’t imagine how that must be for you.” He lets his eyes flicker up. Jon’s still watching him, rapt, and good, good. I haven’t lost him. “I won’t deny that he’s getting along with Sasha and Martin quite well, but...but that’s not because of what he—you—went through. It’s because….right now, you’re pushing people away because you’re scared, but he’s already done that. He knows that pushing people away just means you end up alone. It doesn’t mean he’s a better person, just that he’s a little wiser.”
“But how can you be sure?” Jon asks, leaning forward, eyes big and desperate.
“I mean, I wouldn’t have become your friend if I didn’t like you,” Tim admits unashamedly.
His bold honesty is rewarded by Jon flushing and ducking his head.
“But even so,” he continues, sobering, “Even if you were the worst person on the planet—and you’re not—you wouldn’t deserve to be hurt like that, no matter what the outcome. Does that make sense?”
Jon looks thoughtful as he says, “I—yes. Yes, that makes sense.”
He can tell though, that Jon doesn’t quite believe him. That’s okay—honestly, it’s what he was expecting. Tim’s been running headfirst into the wall that is Jon’s terrible self-esteem for as long as they’ve been friends. This problem is going to take more than one half-assed pep talk.
That’s okay, though. Jon’s worth the effort.

sparring with the boys!
w/ bakugo, kirishima, sero, shoto
bakugo 💥
sparring with bakugo was nothing new.
you were one of the few classmates that could keep up with him in a match, and being his s/o was just another reason to spar with him regularly.
he also liked you to push yourself to get better.
no way would he date a weak side kick. you’d have to be able to give him a run for his money for him to even say a word to you.
most of the time, the spars were really serious.
a time where both of you worked on things you needed to improve on, and gave each other tips that you think would help.
even though bakugo was a bit reluctant when it came to getting advice, he still appreciated the fact that you cared about his fighting style.
sometimes though, on more chill days, you and bakugo would have a light match, which usually resulted into being able to spend more quality time with him. wink wonk ;)
it was a little early into the night, and bakugo decided to have a spar match before he went up for bed.
you two had been going for about half an hour already, and even though you both had energy to keep going, it seemed like the match was going a slow pace.
bakugo had sent his left fist towards you, and you swiftly dodged it, smirking when he growled.
he tried to throw you off by quickly sending a punch with his right, but you were able to grab his hand, and used your leg to trip him onto his back.
you quickly got on top of him, pining him down and smiling in victory
“what the hell? i said no legs this round!”
“what’s the fun in that katsuki? come on, this match is boring.” you sighed, about to throw your legs off of him when he stopped you, pressing his hand against your thigh.
he sat up so that you were straddling his lap. “boring huh? well what could i do to make it more interesting for you?” he had a scowl on his face, but you could clearly see the playful glint in his eyes as he stared at you.
“mmmm i don’t know, maybe stop sending punches directly to my face!” you yelled, pushing him away and standing up.
“you think a villain is gonna stop fighting you if you tell them to?” the blond asked, laying back down on the matted floor.
“maybe if i give him the puppy eyes. it seems to work on you, right?” you pouted playfully, sticking out your bottom lip and turning your eyebrows up.
bakugo’s scoffed turned into a chuckle as he stood up, walking closer to you. “you’re lucky your cute.” he bent down, pressing a peck on your lips before wrapping an arm around your back and pushing you to the ground.
you hit the floor with a thud and looked at bakugo who was glaring down at you mischievously. “prick.” you mumbled, turning your head away as he went to kiss you again.
his lips connected with your cheek, and you felt him smile as he pulled away. “your prick. dumbass.”
kirishima 🪨
kiri loved sparring with you!
it gave him a chance to practice on his hand on hand combat while being with his favorite person ever
sounds like a win win to him
you guys tried to spar at least twice a week, maybe three times if your schedules fit it
sparing with kirishima usually consisted of praising each other and exclaiming how good the other was.
it also never left either one of you hurt. kiri didn’t like to see his precious s/o in pain. especially not because of him.
“wow babe! that move was amazing! can you teach me that?”
“sure kiri. all you do is wait until your opponent throws a punch, then turn your back to them, grab it’s arm, and fling them over your back.” you demonstrated slowly to your boyfriend. “that should give you enough time to get the lead on them.”
kirishima stared at you lovingly as you explained. “what did i do in my past life to deserve such an awesome s/o?”
“kiri stoppp.” you blushed, laughing playfully.
you guys tried moves on each other for a few more minutes until kiri gave a suggestion.
“i’ve been trying to make my body stay hard for a way longer period of time. the problem i have is my stomach. it seems to not want to hold as much as my other body parts.”
you listened intently, grabbing a drink out of kiri’s water bottle. “so uhhh, you mind punching me a few times around there? just so i can try to figure out what’s the problem.”
“you sure kiri?” you asked.
“of course babe! i need some type of stimulation that would trigger it to stay hard longer. this will really help me out.”
you shrugged and agreed, watching kirishima lift up his shirt, cheeks heating up at the sight of his flexed stomach. “don’t get all flustered on me babe. it’s nothing you haven’t seen before.”
“shut up.” you muttered before kirishima hardened his stomach and you began throwing punches around the area.
“aww come on y/n. i know you can do better than that. are you underestimating your man? i can take it!” he smiled, encouraging you to hit harder.
you complied, and started putting more force into the punches.
this continued for about four minutes, taking 10 second breaks each minute. by the time the five minute mark hit, you pulled your hands away, shaking them.
kiri looked at them, and gasped so loudly you thought he had hurt something.
but no, he was staring wide eyed at your hands.
“Y/N WHY DIDNT YOU TELL ME YOU WERE BLEEDING!?” he asked. you looked at your hands and shrugged. “i honestly didn’t notice kiri.”
“UGH this is all my fault. i’m sorry baby, i’ll take you to recovery girl ASAP.” he bent down, picking you up and flinging you over his shoulder with ease.
“but kiri i’m fine!”
your protest fell on deaf ears. your were already out of the training room and halfway down the hall to recovery girl’s office.
sero 🩹
training with sero was....an experience.
there was never a session that would end without you two flirting or making out with each other.
it was just...the two of you, alone together, in tight clothing and all sweaty?
a formula for disaster.
but- you weren’t complaining.
there were some times where you both took it seriously though.
sero would help you with whatever you needed to work on and you did the same for him.
recently, he was really set on working on his capturing technique. he liked the thought of behind able to snatch villains up before they could even think.
so of course you helped him achieve is goal.
“anyone anyone? please i need a hero!” you yelled in a high squeaky voice, hanging from one of the pull up bars in the corner of the training room.
“if i don’t get saved quickly, i’ll fall to my DEATH.”
sero came in shortly after, swinging on the tape from his elbows. “m’lady, what seems to be the problem?”
you scoffed halfheartedly. this was your idea sero
“well if you couldn’t already tell sir, i’m stuck on this super high building and my hands are slipping. please save me!”
“well lady you’re lucky i’m here! just hang tight and i’ll get you down as soon as possible.” sero nodded, and began walking away. you scrunched your face in confusion.
“uhh sero i know this is an act but i’m really slipping...” you warned. the pull up bar you were on wasn’t too high, but it was still left you hanging a few feet from the ground. enough to hurt your ankle if you fell from it.
and the stool you used to get up in the first place wasn’t under you anymore.
your hands were starting to sweat and you were actually slipping.
“sero quit joking around!” you yelled to the back of your boyfriend’s head.
a few seconds later, your hands let go and you closed your eyes, ready to hit the ground.
but instead, you felt something wrap around your torso, yanking you to the side. you yelped as you were pulled into sero’s arms.
when you realized he used to tape to pull you from hitting the ground last second, you looked at him with a frown. “that wasn’t funny.” you pouted, hitting his chest.
“did you really think i’d let my baby fall to their death? no way, mi amor.” he brushed his nose against yours, and you just couldn’t stay mad at him.
“thanks for saving me..my hero.” you kissed him softly and he finally let you go.
“hey! what to you say we do it again but i come from the ceiling. upside down. like spider man!” sero jumped in anticipation.
you didn’t deny his request.
shoto ❄️🔥
shoto was always hesitant when it came to sparring with you.
you were strong of course, and he knew that.
but he also knew his quirk was very difficult to defend against. and it was easy to get hurt when fighting against him.
and while he did want you to improve, he thought it’d be better for you to do it on your own, or with someone who’s quirk was a little less overpowering.
usually you agreed, but today you had just come back from a week with the hero you had been interning with and you wanted to show shoto everything you learned.
“okay shoto. don’t hold back on me now.” you told him before you started the match.
it was definitely an intense session. both of you were out of breath and sore after about an hour.
shoto eyed you cautiously as you bent over with your hand in your knees, feeling bad that he had tired you out.
“come on my love. don’t overwork yourself trying to impress me. i’m already so proud of everything you’ve done.” he said sincerely, pressing a hand against your back.
“but shoto, there’s still one more thing i want to show you.” you stood up, taking a deep breath to finally get your breathing under control and told him to go back to the other side of the spring mat.
he was hesitant at first, but did as he was told when he saw your pleading eyes.
the two of you started fighting again, and eventually you both started to get more competitive.
shoto already had a competitive personality, and while he was weary of you getting hurt, he did notice how you were able to stand your ground against him well.
you didn’t want him holding back, so he didn’t.
at some point, both of you were throwing long rang attacks that had the other falling to the ground.
you sent an attack to shoto that bounced him back, making him fall on his butt before he could stop it.
his eyes hardened, and for a moment he forgot this was just a sparring match with his s/o
he sent a huge plank of ice your way, scooping you under your feet and making you hit the ground hard.
he stared at you as you lay in the ground, breathing heavily.
after a few seconds, he realized what he had done.
“y/n!” he yelled, stumbling over himself to get to your side. he rolled you on your back so you were facing him, and his eyes sank in guilt when he saw you pain written face.
“i’m so sorry my love, i should have calmed down a bit. i didn’t mean to. are you okay?” he asked quickly, looking around for injuries.
you stayed quiet for a bit, before sitting up, grabbing shoto’s face, and pressing a big kiss against his lips.
he stared at you in shock
“shoto i’m fine!” you reassured. “i was just joking around.”
he couldn’t find words for a good 15 seconds, just staring at you with the same wide eyes from before.
after a while, his gaze softened and he shook his head with a light chuckle.
“that was cold y/n. real cold.”
“not as cold as the ice you used to slam me on my butt.” you respond, shoving his shoulder.
“i suppose you’re right.” he pressed a kiss in your forehead and cheek, letting it linger for a few seconds before pulling away. “i’m just glad you’re okay.”
hoped you guys like this! i’m open for feedback and requests! just type it here! :3 🥀

Six: The Breakfast Club
Tumblr media
“What are you thinking about?”
“H-Huh? What do you mean?”
“You’re smiling for the first time today. What are you thinking about?”
“...Stan.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Apparently, I had slept through all of my alarms because when I awoke the next day, it was almost nine. Cursing aloud, I sprang out of bed and zoomed to my closet, ripping out any clothes I could find. Not having time to pull together something totally retro as per usual, I threw on a maroon hoodie, wedged into blue skinny jeans, and slipped on my white sneakers. I applied deodorant and stuck a piece of gum into my mouth before slinging my backpack on. The school was a fifteen-minute walk from my house. I was going to be so fucking late. I was skipping every other step on my way downstairs when I heard a voice call out to me.
“Whoa, you’re still here?”
On my right was Jacob, sitting in the living room and watching television. He stood from the couch and slowly approached me with a smirk. “What are you doing here still?”
“What are you doing here still?”
“I don’t have classes today, Bug,” He lightly teased before gently pushing me towards the door. “Let’s go before you miss anymore school. Hopefully, you don’t get detention.”
“I won’t, Jake.”
I did. As soon as I opened the door to my English class, all eyes were on me like a newcoming circus act. Ms Anderson’s eyes cut to me the second I stepped in and before I knew it, she was stomping towards me, gently ushering me out of the room with her. When we were alone, she crossed her arms and stared down at me. I felt like a child getting scolded for breaking an expensive vase or something. “(Y/N), this is your fourth tardy this month.”
“I know…”
“Is there something we need to talk about?”
There are so many things I need to talk about.
“No… I just… um… I-It’s been a rough few days…”
“Well, I would let this slide, but I’ve already broken the rules twice for you. I’m sorry, dear, but I’m going to have to give you detention. Okay?”
Dammit, Jake… “Okay, fine. Can I just go back to class now?” I sighed. My teacher nodded and opened the door for me. Stepping inside, I was met with the smiles of Dina, Stan and Ricky all directed towards me. I returned the smiles towards my two friends before taking my seat beside Dina. Throughout class, two eyes bore into the back of my head, and I tried my best not to turn and look at who they belonged to. He was catching on. On my way to choir, I heard Ricky calling out to me. He was pushing and shoving past students until he was by my side.
“Babe, what’s been going on with you?” He gently nudged me, but my eyes stayed trained forward. “Oh, so the silent treatment… Are you gonna tell me what I did or am I gonna have to figure it out?” Silence. “Right, okay. I get it. Hey, listen, when you’re out of your bitchy mood, make sure to come talk to me.” And with that, he turned and walked in the opposite direction. Letting out a breath, I slowed my pace along with the beat of my heart. I never wanted anyone to dictate the way I felt, the way my anxiety sky-rocketed when they were around. But it seemed I was letting Ricky do everything to me.
When lunchtime rolled around, I wanted nothing more than to eat my first meal of the day. All throughout English and choir, my stomach had been curling into itself and I felt stupid for not at least grabbing a granola bar before I left home. After grabbing my food, I joined Stan at a near-vacant lunch table. He had been mindlessly picking at his lunch when I sat across from him. “Good afternoon, beautiful.” I whispered. Hearing my voice, he didn’t need to look up.
“Hey, (Y/N)...”
“(Y/N)? Whoa, what’s wrong?”
“Uh, it’s just Syd. She won’t talk to me…”
A pang of jealousy went through my heart. Knowing we’d never talk about our kiss the other night didn’t prevent my wave of disappointment whenever he mentioned Sydney. I mean, how do you even kiss a girl and then talk about a totally different one days later? As much as I love Stan, he could be an idiot sometimes…
I hadn’t even noticed I was spacing out until his voice spoke loud enough for me to snap back into reality. He had been staring at me with raised brows, an expectant look on his face. “O-Oh, sorry… Uh, do you wanna hang out later? Like, when we get home?” I calmly asked, my eyes flickering to the fading bruise decorating his eye. He shifted in his seat and returned back to his lunch.
“Um… I’ll see.” He mumbled, my throat constricting at his words.
-------------------------------------------------
Whitaker watched me like a hawk as I turned into the girls’ restroom.
“Don’t think I don’t know that trick, (Y/L/N)! You better get to the gymnasium as soon as you’re done!”
“Yes, sir.” I mumbled and closed the door behind me. To be honest, I didn’t think he knew that trick and was absolutely planning on spending the entirety of my detention in the restroom. Letting out a sigh, I leaned against the wall and texted Jacob.
Me: I got detention. Pick me up at 7 please?
Jake: Haha! I’ll be there, don’t worry
Jake: And don’t try hiding out in the bathrooms. Whitaker knows that trick
Me: Noted
Pocketing my phone, I pushed the door open and trudged to the gym. Even with the doors closed, I could hear Whitaker screaming at whoever else was inside. With a small groan, I lazily used my body to open one of the doors, the principal’s voice quieting as the screech of the hinges echoed throughout the room.
“Ms (Y/L/N), I would have thought that after getting detention for tardiness, you’d learn to be more punctual. Take a seat!” Whitaker boomed. Rolling my eyes, I moved over to the bleachers, surprised to see Sydney, Stan, Brad, Dina and… Jenny Tuffield.
I could be irritated with people all I wanted, but I never completely ignored or even spat insults or such at them, unless they truly did something to hurt me or the ones I care about. Hence the reason I ignore Ricky. But Jenny brought out a side of me I really despised. It was a side of myself that thought of the worst things to say and spewed them out without hesitation, resulting in a back-and-forth war between the two of us. It usually ended with death threats and flipping the birds to each other, but we’ve never physically fought. That could change one day, who knows? I could feel her sickening smirk as I passed her to sit in front of Stan, who looked bewildered to see that I was here with him in detention. I patted his knee before turning back to Whitaker, who had been waiting for me to do as I was told. Satisfied, he continued on.
“Now that you all are here,” He cut me a look. “I want you to take the next few hours and think about your mistakes. And carve out in your mind a plan for change. Determine how to improve yourselves. Define what the word ‘respect’ means to you.”
Get a job, dude…
“Now you can start by respecting this beautiful gymnasium. Between now and seven p.m., you’re gonna scrape up every goddamn piece of gum from the bleachers,” He stepped forward and slammed a box down in front of us, no doubt full of the tools needed for our manual labor. The six of us all rolled our eyes as Whitaker stepped back again. “Get started.”
“Uh, Mr Whitaker, sir,” I heard Stan from behind me. “Um… Will there be a break for snacks or dinner?”
Silence was his answer. Whitaker stared at Stan as if he’d just asked him to lick his shoes before exiting the gym. From behind me, I felt him lean forward towards Sydney, picking up on their very quiet and very short exchange.
“Hey, I’m really sorry-”
“No. I’m not talking to you, okay?”
Reaching over, I tugged on Stan’s jacket sleeve, the boy shuffling so that our faces were right beside each other. “What are you doing in here?”
“I called File a motherfucker.”
“You- What?”
“Okay,” Dina’s voice interrupted us, causing everyone to turn to her as she stood from her spot beside Brad. “I know none of us wanna be here right now, but I was thinking, if we divide and conquer the bleachers, maybe we could be done before seven and Whitaker will let us out early, so…” Her suggestion earned a smile from her boyfriend and a sarcastic remark from Jenny, who I nearly forgot even existed. She clapped her hands, everyone turning to her.
“Go team!” She mimicked your everyday cheerleader as Dina sat back down, a look of irritation on her face.
“I’m not a cheerleader.”
“Maybe you should be.”
“Maybe you should be in prison.”
“Ooh. That’s my wet dream…” She drawled out, running her tongue over her top teeth. I rolled my eyes and turned my head away.
“I don’t know, guys,” Stan spoke up. “This gum has been here for decades. I don’t think Whitaker actually checks. It’s just a social experiment, like a simulation.”
“Oh. Well, someone’s been smoking their supply.” Brad quipped. I narrowed my eyes and was about to give a sly remark when Jenny interrupted.
“You know what?” She whipped her body around to face us all, that wicked smile stretched across her face. “I have an idea. Why don’t we play Fuck, Marry, Kill?”
I couldn’t help myself. “What are you, thirteen?” I snarled. Our fellow delinquents stared between us with unease. “You say it like we’re about to huff some fucking gasoline. Are you supposed to be some kind of badass?”
Her eyes slid over to me, her grin widening. “Awe, Zip, I haven’t spoken to you in so long, I thought you died…”
“I wish you died…”
“So, who goes first?” Her head snapped towards everyone else, her finger moving towards each person in the room. “Eenie… meenie… miney… Brad.” She whispered out. Brad looked towards his girlfriend.
“Guess if I had to-”
“No. Not another word.” Dina shook her head.
“Oh, what about you, Miss Goody-Goody? Or are you too afraid to play?” Jenny gave a fake pout.
“Why would I be afraid?”
“Cool then. Fuck, Marry, Kill. Stanley Barber… Mr Whitaker… and… Syd.”
“Well, clearly, I’m killing Whitaker.”
“So are you gonna fuck Syd or marry her?”
Dina exhaled through her nose before looking to her right, eyes locking with Sydney. “Total life goal to marry your best friend, if Syd’ll have me.” She softly spoke, bringing a small smile to my face at their soft exchange. Of course, though, Jenny had to ruin it.
“Oh, so then it’s you and Stan in an all-day bone sesh. Ugh, you little slut.”
So over the sound of her fucking voice, I threw my head back in annoyance. “Jesus Christ, Jenny, you are so fucking boring!”
“No need to tell him about it,” She laughed tauntingly. “I’m guessing you wanna go next, since you got my attention. Or are you saving all of the sex and marriage for your little boyfriend?”
“Oh, bite me.”
“Ooh, where?”
Snapping, I slapped my hand down on the space beside me, my gaze set and locked on her. “No one gives a shit about you, Jenny!”
“And people care about you, Zip?! Where’s your fucking dad?!”
Fire in my eyes, I lunged towards her, but felt hands grabbing onto my shoulders and sitting me back down. The hands soothingly rubbed my arms as Jenny cackled. “Come on, (Y/N), it’s just all fun here… Now, for you, your very own Ricky Berry… Stan… and Dina.”
Scratching my cheek, I rolled my eyes so far back, I could feel them do a three-sixty rotation. “Fucking hell, you never give up. Fine, I’d marry Dina, fuck Stan, kill Ricky.”
Jenny lowly whistled as the hands on my arms slowly slid away. “But Zip, I thought you two were in love,” Her grin was something of evil as her brows bounced. “You guys had so much fun, fucking at his party. Oh! Or is it because you were drunk off your ass and he wasn’t?”
“Jenny, shut the fuck up-”
“No consent whatsoever… Boyfriend of the year…”
Having Jenny see me break down in front of everyone was not a moment in time I’d ever want to experience. She already got what she wanted, a reaction from me. She didn’t need a bonus. So, standing to my feet, I darted to the locker room, trying my best to block out Jenny’s laughing. I couldn’t help the tears that cascaded down my cheeks as I stood in front of one of the mirrors, hastily wiping them away.
Why are you letting her get to you? Why are you letting Ricky get to you? He can’t hurt you anymore, stop crying about it!
The creaking of the door sent my body into a stiffened, frozen state. That was, until I heard his voice, “Hey, lovely…” Turning my head to Stan, I sighed out.
“Hey, beautiful…” I sniffled as he made his way over to me. We stood in a comfortable silence, Stan understanding that I needed a moment to compose myself. “S-Sorry about that. You know I just fucking hate her guts-”
“No, I get it. We all hate her guts.” He cracked a smile. I quietly chuckled and stuffed my hands into my hoodie pockets. “Do you wanna talk about it, (Y/N)?”
“Not really… I don’t wanna think about it right now…”
“I know, but, like, it’s good to talk to someone about… you know, traumatic things that happen so it doesn’t bottle up-”
“Yeah, I know, Stan, I just can’t- I can’t think about it right now. We can do it, like, later… Not at school.”
He slowly nodded. “Totally. I understand. So… you ready to head back out? We’re not actually scraping gum. So we can just sit and talk.”
“I’d love to just sit and talk with you.”
Ten minutes later, everyone was spread out, Syd more than anyone. I had no idea where she’d gone, but apparently she stormed out shortly after I did. I guess Jenny knew how to get under everyone’s skin that day. Said girl was sitting against a brick wall away from the bleachers, where the other two pairs of us were. Brad and Dina were hugged up on each other, whispering into each other’s ears and quietly laughing. Stan and I were on the edge of the bleachers, the boy stretched across the one on the first level, and I on the second. As he fiddled with his rubix cube, my index finger reached out and gently traced his facial features. I started off with his brow, careful of his wound on the edge. It was clearing up and that caused a smile to appear on my face. Next, I let my fingertip brush across his lashes and he furrowed his brows, trying to focus on his cube. My finger then glided down the bridge of his nose. I quietly laughed when his eyes comically crossed to look at my finger. With a giggle, Stan jutted his chin upwards to gently kiss my fingertip. “Stop distracting me.”
My hand lazily dropped to his hair as I whispered out an apology. Not too long afterwards, I heard a voice quietly call out Stan’s name, but he was too fixated on his toy. My eyes looked to Sydney, who was standing in the doorway, desperately trying to get the boy’s attention. When she called out to him again, he actually looked at her. Looking between the two of us, she frantically motioned for Stan to come outside. When he only raised a brow, she did it again. Letting out a sigh, he wordlessly handed me his cube before sitting up and following Syd out of the gym, closing the door behind him to allow them privacy. Puffing out a sigh, I began playing with the multicolored cube in my hands. I never was very good with rubix cubes, my patience always ran too thin to finish them. That time didn’t seem to be an exception, either, because minutes in, I set it down and rested my head down to hopefully sleep off the rest of detention.
As I began to doze off, I heard the double doors screech upon Sydney’s arrival. She anxiously walked past me over towards the other side of the gym, where Dina and Brad had moved to suck face. I heard her call out to her friend a few times before she loudly spoke, “Look, Dina, I need a tampon right now.”
“Just dig in my bag.”
“I… I do need you, but for… but for something else.” She stuttered out. And with that, the two exited the gym. Suspicious about what my friends were plotting without me, I slowly sat up from my lying position and sat normally on the bleacher, waiting for one of them to come back. Hearing footsteps approach me, I knew it either had to be Brad or Jenny, and I was praying to the stars it was the former. As unusual as it sounded. The bleacher moaned under Brad’s weight as he sat beside me.
“Hey, Zip,” He greeted with a smile. I side-eyed him for a second before turning my gaze to my shoes. Scoffing, he shifted his legs. “You’re ignoring me now? Oh, come on. We’re friends, Zip. Good friends.”
“We are not friends, Bradley,” I almost laughed. “You’re friends with Ricky and I want nothing to do with him, so… I guess you know where the two of us stand.”
“Okay, well… Regardless, as Ricky’s best friend, I can say for him that what he did was fucked up. Right?”
“Yeah, no shit.”
“Right! But listen, we all make mistakes, Zip. Ricky really loves you, you know that, right? He would never do anything to hurt you.”
I was silent for a bit, only to prevent myself from decking Brad in the nose. “Well, he clearly didn’t love me enough. Not enough to respect my right to consent-”
“Zip-”
“And you know what, Brad?” I slowly stood to my feet. “I’ve had enough of you defending everything he does! You can tell Ricky to get lost and leave me the hell alone!”
Before he could utter another word, I marched straight through the double doors. Three figures stood ahead, and I was more than ready to push past them, but I recognized each of them. Halting in my tracks, I saw Dina, Syd and Stan all nervously staring at me. Confused, I put my weight on both my feet. “Uh… what’s going on?”
Dina was the first to answer. “We… need your help distracting the janitor to get his keys.”
“W-What? Why?”
“Well, Stan and Syd hooked up in the library and got it on camera-”
“You guys hooked up again?” I turned to my best friend, who quickly turned to Sydney. She frowned and stood up straighter.
“You told her?”
“S-She’s my best friend! She tells me when she has sex!”
Widening my eyes, I let out a scoff. “I had sex, I don’t have sex.”
“Well, whatever, can you do it?” Sydney changed the subject. I looked between the three in confusion.
“Okay, but why me?”
“Because you have boobs. Like, a nice size.”
“Uh-”
“And,” Dina cut in. “Because you’re a great actress. The best out of all of us.”
My lips quirked up into a small smile, Dina satisfied that she boosted my confidence enough for me to accept. Lucky for them, my locker was just across from the gym, so I unlocked it and pulled out a spare tee. ‘Can’t seduce anyone wearing that’, Dina told me.
Shortly after, Stan and I were in a corner as I changed my top. He was nervously staring down at his shoes as I pulled my hoodie off. “I didn’t want you to be the distraction. Are you sure you’ll be okay doing this?”
“I’m not seducing him, Stan,” I chucked my hoodie towards him. He looked up to catch it, but as soon as his eyes raked over my almost bare chest, they darted downwards again. “That’s just a back-up plan.”
“O-Oh, okay…” He nodded as I pulled my shirt on.
Minutes later, I entered the classroom Carl the Janitor had been cleaning. He looked up at me and nodded. “Hey, (Y/N).”
“Hi, Carl. Listen. So, I kinda snuck out of rehearsal earlier and I need to get back into the auditorium. But guess what? The door’s locked. I really don’t want Ms Turner to find me out. Do you think you could help me? Please?” I tapped my fingertips together as he sighed.
“You know I can get in trouble doing that…”
“I-I know, but it would mean so much to me. I promise I won’t get you caught.”
“Well, what about the back entrance? She never locks those doors.”
He was right. Clearing my throat, I looked to the side. “W-Well, she did today…”
His eyes narrowed in suspicion for what felt like forever before relenting, handing his ring of keys over. “Okay, just get them back to me in twenty minutes.”
“You’re the best, thank you.” I grinned and stepped out of the room. Swinging around the corner, I found Dina and Syd waiting for me. Upon my arrival, they both grinned. “Nothing wrong with asking politely, ladies. We got less than twenty.” I cheekily smiled, handing the keys over to Sydney. Dina chuckled and crossed her arms as I took my hoodie from Syd and pulled it back on.
“So, what’s the plan?”
“The plan is quite simple.” Stan’s voice appeared as he approached us, two microwavable burritos in his hands.
-------------------------------------------------
“First, we distract Whitaker with burritos. I’m gonna put these in the microwave and blast these bad boys up on high, and then…”
The explosion muffled by the closed door was enough to get Mr Whitaker rushing out of the teachers’ lounge. “What the hell- What the hell is goin’ on down there?! Jesus!”
“...Whitaker will hear it and come runnin’. When he takes off from the teachers’ lounge, the coast’ll be clear straight through to the principal’s office, and then we make our move.”
As the principal moved past the closet we were all hiding in, Stan slowly opened the door, giving the four of us the chance to run out. As Dina and I silently followed Whitaker, Stan and Syd headed towards his office, keys in the latter’s hands.
“Syd, you’re the key man… Key lady.”
“Wait, why am I the key lady?”
“Because you’re… good with your hands.”
“Ew.”
“Dina and (Y/N), you two are lookout. You keep eyes on Whitaker.”
I crouched down and peeked around the corner as Dina did the same right above me. Whitaker had just opened the door to the microwave, the smoke engulfing him as he coughed and fanned it away.
“The burrito bomb should keep him busy for awhile.”
The two of us watched in amusement as he grabbed the fire extinguisher from the fire emergency supplies and sprayed it into the closet.
“That man cannot resist a fire extinguisher, which will give us the time we need to get in. Burrito bombs are disgusting. Last time I set one off, my whole house smelled like bean farts.”
“True story.”
“Gross.”
Sooner than we expected, Whitaker took off from the crime scene in a hurried pace. Dina and I quickly rushed towards our friends, the girl waving her arms in the air as I readied the door to the closet for us.
“Anything goes wrong, lookout crew, you signal us… and everyone take cover.”
Once Stan and Syd noticed Dina, they scurried off down the hall to hide. I pulled Dina into the closet with me and silently closed the door as we crouched down.
“That is literally the worst idea I’ve ever heard.”
“It’s fair. It’s totally fair. Can you think of a better one?”
“Our best hiding spot’s probably behind the trophy case. And we wait…”
A collective sigh of relief filled the closet as the savior ringing echoed through the halls.
“...for the smoke alarm. Which will buy us more time. Which we will need, because there are a shit-ton of keys. Like a metric shit-ton, it’s ridiculous.”
After our principal took off away from his office again, the closet door slowly creaked open as Dina and I watched Syd and Stan successfully enter the principal’s office.
“Once we’re in, we head straight for the security system in the closet. And that’s it!”
The smoke alarm cut off its insistent ringing within seconds. My heart thumped in my throat as Whitaker’s form stormed down the hallway, towards his office in angry strides. Thankfully, Syd and Stan ducked down before he caught sight of them. As soon as he passed us, I gently nudged Dina out of the closet. “Go create some big distraction that’ll lure him away,” I whispered under my breath. “I’ll keep him from the door.” I stood up straight as Dina nodded and silently hurried down the opposite end of the hall.
“Whatever you do, do not panic. Do not bail… or we are screwed.”
Whitaker was seconds from the door and I had yet to come up with a way to get him distracted again.
“Okay, but what happens if your plan goes to shit?”
Finding the key on his ring, he began jiggling it into the lock.
“It won’t.”
I stepped out of the closet, breathing labored in panic.
“But what if it does?”
When the lock sounded, I let out an ear-splitting scream that had Whitaker jumping three feet in the air. When his gaze settled on me, he marched my way, steam practically shooting from his ears. “(Y/L/N), what the hell is the matter with you?!”
“U-Uh- Uh, something happened down that way!” I blurted out, pointing down in Dina’s direction. His head followed my finger before it snapped back to me.
“Well?! What ha-”
A crash sounded.
“Improvise.”
The poor man shook his head in exhaustion. “I’m too goddamn old for this shit…” He whined before taking off down the hall, away from his office. Once the coast was clear, Syd and Stan peeked up, watching as I gave them a thumbs-up. They gratefully smiled my way before standing and finishing the job.
“And if all goes well, as it should, we grab the footage, our sexcapade remains private, and nobody gets expelled.”
My shoulders sagged as Sydney walked out of the office with Stan behind her, holding up the flashdrive in her hand.
“Let’s hope this shit works.”
-------------------------------------------------
It totally worked. After our brilliant scheme, the four of us sat in front of the lockers to rest, my form sandwiched between Stan and Dina. He kissed the flashdrive and let out a breath. “Oh, I thought we were screwed…”
“We were screwed, but holy shit, we did it.” Dina quietly laughed along with the rest of us.
“Thank you guys,” Sydney smiled, the three of us turning to her. “Seriously.” She chuckled as I reached my hand over to Stan’s pocket. Catching onto what I was doing, he fished his case out himself.
“Wonderful idea, Nugget,” He pecked the back of my hand with his lips before I could move it away and slid a joint from his case. “Any takers?”
“You’re not serious.” Dina frowned as Stan took out his lighter. He nodded to her with furrowed brows.
“He is.” I grinned fondly at my best friend as he lit up the end of his joint and inhaled the smoke before handing it over to me. I happily accepted it and took a hit as Dina glanced around us, hoping no adults were around to witness the scandalous act. She choked out a laugh when Sydney accepted the joint from me.
“Since when do you smoke weed?”
Sydney slyly smiled and stretched the smoke over to her, my own hand taking it to give her better access. “Oh, come on, Dina. Everyone’s doing it. Don’t you wanna be cool like us?” We all giggled and watched as Dina hesitantly took a hit from the joint. Her own snorting encouraged our laughter to increase, the four of us blissfully unaware of what lay ahead of us just in the locker room down the hall.
We sat in that hallway for the next half hour, talking about everything and nothing as our time of release approached closer. When the joint was finished, we entered the gym to enjoy our fading highs in peace. Dina headed over to the bleachers, and Stan and I sat on the bench beside the locker room, as Sydney headed inside to use the bathroom. The two of us sat in a comfortable silence as he shifted the colorful columns of his cube. I rested my head on his shoulder and closed my eyes, and soon after, I felt his head rest against mine. “So… are you gonna need a ride home?” He whispered.
“No. Jake is picking me up.”
“That’s good, that’s good. Um… now do you wanna talk about how you’re doing? I know that, like, we’re still in school and we’re not entirely alone, but I just wanted to see how you were after you had to-”
“I’m doing better,” I interrupted his rambling. “Thank you.”
His hands froze their fiddling before one shyly crept close to mine. I felt his fingers graze my thigh as he interlocked our fingers in a tight hold. “Of course, Nugget.” He muttered right as Dina walked to the door to the locker room, giving me a smirk before walking inside. Stan then held up his rubix cube and chuckled. “Wanna try and solve it together?”
“Oh, my god, yes.” I laughed. And with that, we were using our free hands to turn and shift the cube around, hushed laughter filling the gymnasium as we told each other ‘no, not that way’, ‘turn the blue one’, and ‘yeah, yeah, that one’ for the next minute and a half of peace. Once our time was up, the door to the locker room slammed open and a teary-eyed Dina stormed out, a frantic Brad behind her.
“Babe, wait, please. Syd’s lying, I swear to god! Please! She’s lying!” As Dina walked out of the gym, Whitaker walked in, watching her go. “You’re not seriously breaking up with me right now!”
“Hey! Which one of you punks eats burritos?” Our principal shouted, Stan and I stifling our laughter in each other’s hair and shoulder. “Alright, I don’t know what the hell went on tonight, but I wanna see everyone in my office first thing in the morning!” He gave us one last look before exiting again. As soon as he was gone, Brad turned to Syd with a clenched jaw.
“I offered you a truce, and you fucked it up. This is on you. You remember that.” He pointed at her before angrily stomping out. Stan and I detangled ourselves from each other as Jenny walked out of the locker room with crossed arms.
“Ah, another day in paradise,” She looked between the three of us as her smile faded. “So, you guys wanna get wasted?”
I scoffed. “Fuck off, Jenny.”
Waving Stan and Syd goodbye minutes later, I joined Jacob in his car. He smiled over at me as I clipped my seatbelt on over myself. “So? How boring was it?”
“Oh, a total fucking snoozefest.” I rolled my eyes, my cousin chuckling and pulling off towards our home. Halfway through the car ride, I heard him turn down his music and sigh.
“Bug, what’s going on with you?”
“Huh?” I turned to him with raised brows.
“You’re… You’re different. You’re quiet, you skip dinner sometimes, you’re sleeping in. You never do that, especially the quiet part. Jesus, you’re so loud-”
“Okay, asshole, I get it!” I laughed quietly before going completely silent again. Not realizing I proved his point, I jumped when he poked my arm.
“See? Something’s wrong with you. What is it? Is it Ricky?”
“I-” I don’t know why I wanted to keep the whole situation a secret. Things like this needed to come into light and Ricky deserved to be exposed. Sensing my hesitancy, Jacob nodded.
“There we go. What did he do this time? Did he forget an anniversary? No? Did he… cheat?” Silence. “Did he do worse?” My eyes darted away. “(Y/N), did he do worse…?”
“I don’t know if I should say, Jake-”
“You absolutely should say it, (Y/N). Did he hit you?”
“No.”
“No? Did he… you know, touch you?” His tone softened as tears welled up in my eyes. “Bug, what happened…?”
“H-He raped me…” I cried and covered my face. “I got drunk on his birthday and he took advantage of it. A-And then he lied and said we were both drunk. B-But everyone else said he wasn’t even drunk.”
A beat of silence passed before the roar of the engine slid in pitch. I looked up at the houses and street signs that flew past us in a blur. “J-Jake, what are you doing?!”
“We’re gonna pay Ricky a visit.”
Before I knew it, we were in front of Ricky’s house. Jacob silently released himself from his restraint and exited the car. I sunk down in my own seat as I watched Ricky walk out of his home and towards his car. Upon seeing Jacob, he happily waved, but his smile vanished when Jacob decked him in the face so hard he fell to the ground. My breathing sped up as I jumped out of the car, speeding over to the two. “Jake! Stop!” I screamed as he straddled Ricky, landing punch after punch on his face. Ricky cried out and tried to push him off, but it was no use. Jacob was so much stronger than him. I knew pulling on him and screaming at him would do nothing, so I looked up and turned all around, watching as some neighbors peeked out their windows and front doors to watch the scene unfold. When I heard a crunch, I whipped back towards them and almost hurled at the bloodied mess that was Ricky’s face. “Jake, come on!” I screamed and pulled him off.
Stumbling to his feet, Jacob grabbed Ricky by his collar and lifted him close. “I don’t ever wanna see you near her. I don’t wanna hear that you spoke to her, I don’t even wanna know that you looked at her,” He growled, Ricky frantically nodding. “Don’t ever associate yourself with my sister ever again or I will make sure your eyes are swollen shut next time. Got it? Got it?!”
“Yes.” Ricky wheezed out before he was dropped to the ground.
“We’re going home, Jake! Jake, let’s fucking go home!” I screamed and ran to his car, getting in the driver seat. Chest heaving, he strode back over to the car and got in the passenger seat, sighing heavily as I drove away, leaving behind a groaning Ricky. I hadn’t even noticed his bloodied and bruised knuckles until I parked the car. Like a worried mother, I helped him out and over to the front porch.
“Hey, lovely!” I heard Stan call out. Looking up, I saw that he and Syd were just about to enter his house. “Do you wanna-”
I fished out my keys and hurriedly unlocked the door, pushing my cousin inside and shutting the door behind us. After ordering him into the bathroom, I found some bandages and hydrogen peroxide and joined him inside. The next few minutes were spent in silence, save for the soft hisses that escaped him when I dabbed the chemical onto his cuts. As I wrapped his hands, I felt his eyes on me. “(Y/N)?”
“Yes?”
“If he tries anything ever again, tell me immediately.”
“I know.”
“I’m serious,” He ducked his head down to meet my eyes, his own shining with unshed tears. “I promise you, he won’t lay a finger on you as long as I’m around.”
Setting down the blood-covered cotton ball, I nodded and allowed my lip to quiver.
“I know.”
Chapter 16 Battle
Below is my random thoughts playing Ch 16. I may or may not have gotten embarrassingly emotional playing a certain route.
I'm playing all 4 routes as my "first route," so please no spoilers beyond this point.
Crimson Flower
As much as I'm absolutely dreading killing Rodrigue and Ingrid, I'm going to relish taking Cornelia out.
My very first move this battle - Felix kills his father. RIP Rodrigue. (Felix used the Crest of Fraldarius first, then crit him. Damn, I hope he's nicer to Ingrid).
Rodrigue and Felix's battle dialogue though :(
Oh, God, Ingrid's chosen to fight for Dimitri till she dies. I'm surprised how upset I am having to fight her. I mean, I always liked Ingrid, but I think I like her more than I even thought I did.
Linhardt just said "is any of this worth it?" Me too right now, buddy, me too.
Time for Felix vs Ingrid. She dodges his bow, then hits his ass with her batallion on EP. I'm proud of her.
God, you have no idea how happy I am that Ingrid called Felix out for betraying everyone - that she didn't forget Glenn. Because, I mean, Felix IS fighting for the team that killed his brother.
His rebuttal was so weak too. "You don't understand." No shit, Sherlock, that's why she asked.
Shit, Ingrid's dead :( that sucked.
God it felt good to kill Cornelia after that.
I really am not ready for Fhirdiad. Ingrid and Rodrigue were hard enough. I'm so not ready for Dedue and Dimitri.
But I think this is my last Crimson Flower level until I'm ready to play the last two back-to-back? I don't know about that. I may just want to get the next chapter over with.
OMG Felix was my MVP. His "motivation" is maxed out after killing daddy and Ingrid and preparing to off Dimitri. That's so cold blooded.
Silver Snow
Time to kill criminally underused dragon lady.
A rare sight - Lysithea having to hit something - twice.
Ok, so does my CF team suck? Or is there a steeper difficulty curve because it's shorter? CF Ch 16 wasn't hard, but everyone in SS is easily killing everything. Like this level is a legit joke to my SS team, but in CF I at least had to be cautious.
You know, I've talked about my SS!Ferdinand before, but my Lysithea and Sylvain are also both absolutely terrifying.
Oh no, Lorenz! He was one of my core SS units 😭(before he betrayed us).
Didn't people say he comes back if I kill him with Byleth or something? Not sure I need him anymore.
Should I? Just? Kill him? Because I can? Or be nice? I'm not even sure killing him with Byleth will work.
Anytime the enemy uses that firey wagon batallion and it misses it's so funny.
Oh, man, Lorenz was told fight for the Empire or die? He sounded so sad about fighting Byleth. I can't not try to spare him after that. Not sure if this is going to work.
OMG OMG IT WORKED! I don't have to kill him!!!! I can't, not after learning he thought he'd die if he didn't join the Empire.
This is the first chapter Ferdinand has actually been dancing. And the second I unleash him, double crits against an armored night. Man is bloodthirsty.
"Defeat boss" when the boss moves and is on a dragon sucks. Because every level is always and forever - route enemy.
Annnnd . . . . that's it. Killed everyone but Ladislava and only Bernie and Anna used their turns, so now it's just a matter how picking who gets the kill.
For the record, Linhardt got the final blow. I always feel bad making him kill, but he needed the experience points so . . .
Seteth just prayed for his enemies 😭
Verdant Wind
I already have Lorenz, so I don't have to "kill" him with Byleth this time.
Oh, wow, Ferdinand's on the map. Didn't see that at first.
Even if he wasn't an enemy commander, I'd kill him. Kill 'em all is just too much fun. I'm also less upset about killing him than I thought I'd be. I thought he'd be a much bigger deal than he actually is. He's a good boi and all, but I'm just not emotionally attached, and I thought I would be.
OMG, Claude. He's like - naw, just kill Acheron. He's a nuisance.
Acheron is really a meme though. He show up in some paralogue (I don't remember) and yeah I don't think we're supposed to take him seriously.
I find it mildly amusing that every noble who sides with Edelgard in the Alliance and the Kingdom either a.) have lands close to the Imperial border or are b.) the corrupt nasties.
Man, I even danced Lorenz so he could reach Acheron and no unique dialogue.
Lysithea is dumb. She one-shotted Ladislava.
Sometimes I think I forget just how hot Claude is.
RIP Ferdinand. At least his dialogue didn't make me feel guilty like Ashe or Ingrid did. His motivation was just inflating his own ego and his petty one-sided rivalry with Edelgard. He grows into a better person if he's recruited.
It's funny the last man standing was the Lorenz replacement lol.
Lorenz was my MVP, seems fitting.
Azure Moon
Alright, so a few people seemed hyped to see my chapter 16 reactions, and nothing worth hyping happened in the other routes (sans killing Rodrigue and Ingrid, but I've already made my feelings known about that). So it's got to be something in AM, but I kind of expected that.
Why does Rodrigue get dialogue, but I don't get to use him as a unit 😔
My AM gameplay every. single. time. Have Dimitri draw as much aggro as possible. End turn.
OMG.
😭😭😭😭😭😭
HE'S BACK.
OMG, Dimitri knows he's alive now. I can't.
OMG he got so hot. That hairstyle is much improvement. And those scars. And he's so tall. I forgot just how tall he is.
OMG he's going to be in the Monastery again. I'm spending every single fricken Professor Point tea timing him.
And all his supports. I finally get to see his A supports. 😭😭
He's got new quotes and everything 😭😭
Dimitri and Dedue fighting side-by-side again. 😭😭
It's been like since December when I last saw Dedue. 😭😭
And his first level up got like 6 points, including speed!
His "I will Break You!" quote is INTENSE.
Oh, right, Lorenz. I'll try to kill him with Byleth. Should be easy. My AM!Byleth is a pegasus knight so.
Lorenz's battle quote is so much more polite than Ferdinand's. I know I want to do a "kill em all" but I just can't after hearing Lorenz say that.
I am DYING to see what Dimitri and Dedue's dialogue is, but it's 12:13am, and I still haven't showered, and I gotta get up at 6am for work 😭😭
OMG lol looking at these. Everything else is so organized and AM's is just crying emojis and Dedue gushing.
#StanDedue 😭😭
Warnings: Language, buried trauma, mentions of tortured and murdered children, furious Marcus.
Link to Masterlist
Comment: We learn a bit more history on the Heroics as a whole, and something Reader’s been supressing, that leads to some new developments concerning her powers.
(Again I apologise for the crossover GIF, but really Narcos just has the best ones. Also, let me know if it’s yours and I’ll credit you!)
Chapter 39
Tumblr media
  Wisconsin was getting cold this time of year, and you were frustrated. Verity had really outdone himself this time. He’d positioned himself right smack in the middle of suburbia, on Barbara Lane, in De Pere, Green bay, forcing you to take twice as many safety precautions as usual, before you could see him.
  You’d asked Marcus after the first time you’d met the truth-seeker, if it wouldn’t be less dangerous and more inconspicuous for him to come to you, instead of you having to travel all over the country to find him. But Marcus had explained that he had adapted a lifestyle that meant that he was never in one place for more than two days, in order to stay ahead of any team that HQ might send out to investigate his energy-signature.
  He rarely used his ability to the extent that the new and more powerful sensors could detect it, but on the few occasions when he had, he’d found himself having company some time later. Their response time varied depending on where in the country he was, and whenever he was closer to the west coast, his temporary lodgings were always significantly shorter.
  Allen had been quiet for most of the journey, deep in his thoughts, but when you started getting close to your destination, the old man started talking.
  “I built most of HQ, you know. The Heroic organisation.”
  “Yeah, you were one of the founders, right? One of the first non-powered people to suggest that supers might need help to become actual heroes. You got them to talk to one another, start building relationships, creating the friendships that would ultimately turn them into a team.”
  “It was almost impossible to get those knuckleheads to coincide. There were only four of them back then, and they all wanted the glory and heroism to themselves, fighting for the spotlight every chance they got. We really thought our efforts weren’t gonna do anything.”
  “What changed it around?”
  “Anita Moreno.”
  “Hah… of course she did.”
  “When she came along, young and determined and confident, she elbowed out their failing attempts at leadership by actually taking charge, and making them listen to reason. By way of a beat-down if necessary.”
  “That, I can believe. And I’d have loved to see it.”
  “She was fearless of their powers and their masculinity, their macho-bullshit. And before long, she had them training to improve their skillsets, studying the politics of the world, saying that if they were gonna insist on meddling in other cultures, then it was also their responsibility to understand what the hell they were meddling with.”
  “And that’s where you took the opportunity, I’m guessing?”
  “I reached out to Anita, offering financial support in creating a training-facility for the supers, a kind of recreational area, where they could play with their abilities, test themselves against each other, without risking harm to anyone. She really liked the idea, and asked me to find out if anyone else would be interested in helping them, and over time, that’s how the Heroics were born.”
  “And now it’s been tainted.”
  “I don’t know that it hasn’t been completely destroyed already.”
  “Henry, the organisation can never be destroyed, not as long someone’s around to fight back. And you’d better believe we are.”
  “What have you brought me today, Rainbow?”
  A little while later, you finally stepped into the house, and Verity’s energy hit you. Since he knew you couldn’t use your power to greet him anymore, he called to you from the kitchen and you guided Allen there.
  The poor man was already pale.
  “Someone I really hope you’re about to tell me I can trust.”
  “A founder… this is a first. Your heart is filled with love, for your family, mostly, but that also makes you susceptible to great fear. Right now, you fear what will be left of your legacy once this mess is made public. You fear that the Heroics will be shut down, and that your life’s work will go down in history as nothing but a failed experiment. You love your creation, it gives you great pride, but you fear it too. The power it’s accumulated, and how the politics have gotten more and more in control of it. But you are innocent of any crime or conspiracy. You are, at heart, a good man.”
  Allen looked like he might vomit, so you helped him to sit down and brought him a glass of water.
  “Who are you?”
  Verity never answered that question, no matter who was asking, so you sat down next to Henry to explain.
  “He’s a very special super, that you can never mention to anyone. If you do, he’ll disappear, and we’ll have no way of knowing who’s trustworthy or not.”
  “He can tell the truth? I never even spoke…”
  “Verity sees the truth, like a web around people. I don’t know exactly how it works, but he can see everything, past and present. Every lie and every truth of your entire existence.”
  “Incredible. And really unnerving.”
  “Yes, but worth it. Thanks to him we have over 120 trusted operatives working for us all over the world, and that’s not including the Heroics.”
  “That’s… impressive. But I fear this enemy is going to need much greater numbers than that, to be defeated.”
  “Maybe. But 89 of those operatives are supers, and that evens the odds significantly.”
  “What? But… we scan for people with abilities all over the world, we would know if that many existed.”
  “Not if they’d been hiding their powers. We figured that anyone who was on the Heroics radar, would most likely be on SIC’s as well, so we focused entirely on reaching out to those that we knew were hidden. And in that process, we uncovered a whole community of powered people that want nothing to do with the fame or recognition, and once they understood the stakes, they all agreed to help us. And they, in turn, are reaching out to their friends, normal and super, to join the fight. Our numbers grow every day, Henry. We can beat these assholes; we just need a little more time.”
  Verity’s energy focusing on you, broke your concentration, and you turned to look at him.
  “What is it?”
  “I’m not sure. Something… something in your memories.”
  “If it’s my memory then why can’t you see it clearly?”
  “It’s been hidden. It’s a memory you can’t see yourself.”
  Your skin crawled and your heartbeat picked up, in an involuntary response to any kind of mention of your time with the mad doctor. Verity noticed.
  “A painful memory. Something you don’t want to remember.”
  “I don’t want to remember any of it, V.”
  “Tubes, wires, machines, syringes. Your body remembers. Your cells do.”
  “Pain… so much pain, your nerves remember all of it. You fought him. You bit him twice, escaped your bindings once, almost got out. He punished you for that by pouring battery-acid on your feet. He was so confident that his experiment would work that he didn’t care how much damage he caused you in the process.”
  Lost in his search into your mind, Verity slowly started moving towards you, centring all his power on you, desperate to uncover everything that was hidden. You weren’t sure if he was even aware of how overbearing he was in that moment. How threatening.
  He had never come across a truth he couldn’t see before, and it made him obsessive and ruthless in his pursuit of it. A part of you knew that, but your reptile brain was overcome with a sense of danger, and you backed away from him, but he followed you.
  “V… please, stop.”
  He didn’t even hear you.
  “You’re hiding from me. I can feel the memory so clearly, wrapped in a bubble I can’t penetrate. I need to know what it is.”
  He was pushing so much of his energy into your mind to try and break that bubble, that you started feeling unnaturally heavy. Your body suddenly felt like it was moving through liquid, meeting so much resistance that it exhausted you just to take a single step.
  You collapsed to the floor, struggling to breathe, and still he didn’t let up. He towered over you, and somewhere in the background you heard Allen trying to reason with him, but then a splitting pain shot through your head, and you passed out.
  “You stay the fuck away from me, V!”
  You woke up lying on the sofa in the living room, your head still throbbing and the light burning your eyes. But from what little you could make out, Verity was sitting on a chair right next to you, and it made the bear inside you wake up with full force.
  You launched yourself at him, placing a hard fist at his solar plexus, and when he involuntarily crunched forwards, his face had a very abrupt meeting with your elbow.
  He fell backwards, toppling the chair over and breaking it as he hit the floor, bleeding from his nose and cheek-bone.
  Allen rushed into the room from the kitchen, holding a pack of ice he’d apparently been getting for you. You wobbled over to him and swiped it from his hands to put against your right temple, while Verity slowly got to his knees.
  “I saw it. The memory you were hiding, I was able to break your defence the moment before you lost consciousness.”
  “I don’t care.”
  “He did it in front of you. He strapped children into that chair, and made you watch as he drained them. He made you watch their strength gradually leave them as the pain got to be too much. You saw the faces of at least nine of them, wordlessly begging you for help.”
  “I trapped those memories away for a reason, you asshole. Just because you need the truth like a fucking addict, doesn’t mean I do!”
  The images came to you as he voiced them. You remembered those faces, fifteen of them, actually. You remembered their pain, and how much you wished that you could have borne it for them. How gladly you’d have sacrificed yourself for them, if you could have.
  That was why your powers had manifested into what they did. That was why you couldn’t heal yourself, because in that time and place, you truly didn’t care if you died.
  You slumped against the nearest wall and slowly allowed yourself to sink to the floor. Your head was still throbbing, and you were beyond angry.
  “You do need to know this.”
  “You don’t get to decide that for me! You don’t get to torture me, V, that’s what the fucking bad guys do!!”
  “I’m sorry.”
  “Oh, that is as close to a god damned lie as you’ve ever gotten! You don’t give a shit if your powers hurt me, as long as you get your fucking truth. If you’re sorry about anything, it’s that I’m not grateful for your efforts. Go ahead, tell me I’m wrong!”
  He didn’t speak. He just sat there, looking as unbothered about everything as he always did.
  “Allen, get me the hell out of here.”
  “Hermosa? What’s wrong?”
  You took a cab from the airport, and fell asleep about halfway home. The driver had a calm and rhythmic manner that soothed you, and he was listening to John Williams play the Concierto de Aranjuez, with the soft guitar notes making your frayed mind drift away to a warm and sunny Spain.
  He woke you by gently announcing that you’d arrived at your destination, and you paid him and thanked him for his kindness, before getting out and walking towards the gate in the fence. Your legs felt like lead.
  You could hear Marcus and Missy through the front door as you approached it, ingulfed in playing some boardgame, and you stopped and just listened to them for a while, leaning heavily against the door.
  Your darling Missy, the same age as several of those children. But alive and happy and such a wonderful person already.
  And Marcus. Your reason for living. The one that saved you, and kept saving you, despite the darkness that accompanied you.
  You hadn’t kept your word about checking in with him, so when you texted him while you were waiting at the airport in Green Bay, he’d been furious at first, wanting to know why he hadn’t heard from you in almost five hours. But he’d quickly calmed as you’d simply reminded him that since he was hearing from you now, you were obviously okay, and you’d tell him everything when you saw him.
  But now, standing behind that door, you didn’t want to tell him. You didn’t want to talk about it, and you didn’t want to burden him with knowing it. But you also knew that he’d see it on your face the moment you walked in. You were too tired and in too much pain still, to even try and keep up any appearances.
  You took a breath, and walked inside. Marcus was on his feet the moment the door swung open, and he swept you into a tight hug as soon as he got to you, but the mildness of your response immediately had him worried.
  “Could you just keep your voice down a bit, please. My head’s killing me.”
  “Where you in a fight?”
  He looked closer at you upon hearing that, and he realised that you were actually in terrible shape. He swept you up into his arms and carried you to the bedroom, while asking Missy to come and help him prepare a bath for you.
  She went straight to the bathroom and turned on the taps, and you could hear her going into the cabinets to pull out fresh towels.
  In the meantime, Marcus was helping you out of your clothes, and noticed a big black bruise on your elbow.
  “No… just felt cornered.”
  “By who?”
  “...Verity.”
  His whole posture changed, and you could feel a sudden rage emanating from him.
  “Tell me what he did.”
  “I’m too tired right now…”
  “Querida, look at me. Tell me.”
  “He… broke into the memories I’d hidden… the one’s he couldn’t see before.”
  “The one’s Prince had altered?”
  “No… the one’s I buried. The one’s that were too horrible… He forced them out, and now my head feels like it’s breaking apart.”
  “Why would he hurt you like that?”
  He picked you up again and moved you into the bathroom. Missy only stayed until the tub was full and she could close the taps, and then she hugged you gently and slipped out of the room.
  Marcus took the last of your clothes off before lowering you into the warm water, and when you asked him to join you, he did, holding you close and softly stroking your skin under the water.
  “He can’t stand lies, and apparently that applies to secrets as well. He just had to know; consequences be damned.”
  “He’ll regret that tomorrow.”
  “Don’t bother. He won’t admit to any wrong-doing. And we still need him.”
  “I don’t give a fuck. The only reason I agreed to let you go was because I thought you’d be safe with him.”
  “I don’t have anymore secrets for him to try and uncover now. So, technically I will be, from now on. Not that I ever wanna see him again.”
  “You won’t have to. I’ll deal with him.”
  “We’re still at war, honey. We’re gonna have to do a lot of things we’d rather not.”
  “Fuck the war, I’ll turn my back on the whole damned thing and take you to live with the fucking penguins if that’s what it takes. I’m so tired of seeing you in pain!”
  “Oh, please, keep your voice down…”
  “Sorry.”
  You sat in silence for a while, as the warm water started to open up your capillaries, easing your headache a bit.
  “Are you gonna tell me?”
  You knew what he was asking, and you really wanted to say no, but you also knew that you needed to tell him.
  “Prince made me… he made me watch.”
  The tears burned in your eyes, and you tried to chase the memories away, to lock them back into that little bubble where they couldn’t hurt you. But it was too late.
  “Watch what?”
  You didn’t want to say it out loud. It felt as though that would somehow solidify the images into reality, making them truly inescapable. He could feel your resistance, and tried to soothe you with his current, but it wasn’t enough this time.
  “The… ch-children. He made me… watch them die.”
  “Oh, my god…”
  The next morning you felt better. The headache had eased with some real sleep and you were starting to feel human again. Marcus was right next to you, his arms securely wrapped around you while he slept, but he stirred the moment you did. It was still early enough that your monday alarms hadn’t gone off yet.
  You felt him swallow repeatedly against the bile and grief that surged up in his throat as he realised what you were saying. He’d seen the lab. The extraction chair. And the freshest bodies that Prince hadn’t had time to get rid off before they found his lair. He’d seen how much pain they’d been in as they died, evident in their faces even after death.
  He didn’t say anything else, and you didn’t need him to, you just needed him to hold you, and he did.
  “Good morning, hermosa. Did you sleep okay?”
  “Morning. Yeah, actually I did.”
  “No bad dreams?”
  “I think my headache might have made that impossible. It’s gone now, though.”
  “Good. How do you feel about breakfast?”
  “I’m looking forward to it. I still haven’t eaten in our kitchen yet.”
  “Right. Eggs and toast?”
  “Please.”
  You went about your morning toilet and wash, before heading out to the kitchen together. Missy was already at the island, having cereal and flipping through a schoolbook, and since Marcus was already pulling out the frying pan to get started on the eggs, you sat down with her, before the school bus would get there.
  “Morning, angel. Test today?”
  “Yup. Maths. I got it, though.”
  “Oh, I believe that, you’re good at maths. Break a leg anyway.”
  “Thanks, alma. I’m aiming for top scores.”
  “I like your aim.”
  “Don’t worry, preciosa, her protection is in place.”
  Marcus had just sat down a plate in front of you when the bus honked, and Missy ran out the door while shouting she loved both of you.
  You kept staring at the closed door after she’d disappeared through it, and Marcus knew what you were thinking.
  “I know, but after yesterday… I just feel a bit more protective than usual.”
  “That’s entirely understandable, but please try not to stress over it. You have another one to protect as well.”
  “Right… Sorry.”
  “Don’t apologise, just breathe and eat calmly.”
  “So, Allen got the all clear, I assume. Does that mean he’s in?”
  You dug into the food and it was delicious. So much better than the airport food you’d eaten all day yesterday, even though it was just scrambled eggs and perfectly roasted toast, with those tomatoes on the side, that he’d promised you the day before.
  Marcus let you finish before he started talking again.
  “Yeah, he’s gonna coordinate for us at HQ, so we can keep our attention on the rest of the country, and world.”
  “Is he okay?”
  “Shaken, for numerous reasons, but determined to get his lives work back in order. He told me about the early days, and how he and your mom whipped the first supers into heroes.”
  “Really? Mom doesn’t talk about those days much. She’s told me a lot about my father, but not that much about herself.”
  “Well, she seems to have been a tour de force all her life, from what Allen described. And after what you’ve told me about your dad, I can see why he would’ve fallen for her. They were a good match.”
  “She always says that the best thing about him was how good he was at driving her up the walls, because it forced her to really look at him.”
  “I see what she means.”
  “I don’t drive you up the walls. Do I?”
  “Mostly just in the mornings, when you know I’m not susceptible to ‘fun’, but other than that, you’re pretty well behaved.”
  “Oh, no, the mornings don’t count.”
  “And why the hell not?”
  “Because your morning mood is way too amusing not to take advantage of.”
  “Hey! That is so not fair, I can’t help it that my brain just won’t start on all cylinders at once. And, for the record, this is the second morning in a row that I haven’t been cranky first thing.”
  His whole face lit up in a dazzling smile at that.
  “Wow. That’s more than just a record, babe, that’s almost worthy of a mention on CNN.”
  “You’d like that, wouldn’t you?”
  “Sorry to interrupt.”
  “What the fuck is wrong with you?! How could you do that to her?! I have always been your friend, protected you, guided you, helped you any way I could… and you almost kill my wife!!”
  A voice came from the living room, and with the way the house was designed, about half of that space was visible from the kitchen, while the other half was hidden behind the dining room.
  He didn’t need to step into view from behind the wall that separated the two areas, for either of you to know who it was. The truth-seeker had a very recognisable tone and rhythm of speech. But when he did appear, you couldn’t help yourself from getting out of your chair and taking a few steps back towards the kitchen counter, needing as much space between you as possible.
  Marcus, on the other hand, turned positively feral. He rushed Verity and wrestled him to the floor, while screaming at him.
  “I would never have let her come to any harm.”
  You’d never seen him angry like this. Usually he internalised it, afraid to let it loose because of what his powers might do, but this was more than anger. He felt betrayed by one of his oldest friends, and it enraged him in a way that didn’t even involve his powers.
  He had Verity pinned on the floor and was sitting on top of him with his hands around his neck, every muscle in his body was tensed to the breaking-point and there where visible veins pulsing in his face, neck and arms.
  “Are you seriously fucking lying to me right now?! You did harm her, you ignorant piece of shit! Just because she’s the strongest fucking person you’ve ever met, doesn’t mean you can’t hurt her! She could barely even walk!”
  “But she’s not damaged. Her mind is intact.”
  “I don’t believe this…I don’t fucking believe it!”
  He got off of Verity and dragged him up to standing before shoving him down on the nearest chair, still keeping himself in between you and the trespasser. He paced in front of him while he continued to rail at him.
  “Are you seriously telling me, that you don’t know the difference between physically harming someone, and hurting them? How is that even possible, with all the crap you went through as a kid? How do you not know the difference?!”
  “It was a memory. Hiding them away only ever hurts you, I was trying to help her.”
  “Did you see the fucking memory?!”
  “Yes.”
  “Tell me exactly how seeing those faces for the rest of her life is gonna help her!”
  “It already has.”
  His eyes shifted to yours, and you instinctively tried to back away further.
  “That memory has already made you understand why you have the powers you do.”
  His energy flowed through you, and it made you feel sick. You closed your eyes in a useless attempt to keep him out, but you felt him explore your mind again, bringing those images to the forefront of your thoughts.
  “Seeing their suffering solidified everything that you are. Through all his torture and experiments, all you wanted was to live. But for them… you wanted to die. You wanted to exchange your life for theirs. That’s your true strength – your armour and your weapon. Look at their faces, Rain. See them and know who you are.”
  “You think that just because you know the truth, you understand everything? Do you think you know how this feels? Do you think you have any idea how much this hurts me? Do you not even see how you’re manipulating me?”
  Your blood suddenly boiled with fury. Who was he to command your thoughts? To impose his perspective on you? This man that had hurt you so badly, only to uncover a truth he had no right to.
  The entire house shook as your powers awoke with a vengeance. You snapped your eyes back open just as Marcus turned back to look at you, realising what was happening.
  But you loved this house, you weren’t gonna put a single fucking dent on it.
  Reaching into that special place inside of you, where you’d learned you could find that sparkling dust, you drew it out and gathered it in large quantities on the floor in front of Verity. Then you allowed your mind to fill with the images of those innocent children, in their dying moments, and transferred those images into the dust.
  Fifteen lifelike sculptures appeared in the sparkles, perfect re-creations of the dead and long forgotten sacrifices, that Verity had never met, never known, and yet felt he had the right to use like string-puppets.
  He had the audacity to smile at your creations.
  His smile faded as you spoke, but he made no attempt to apologise.
  “You’re using my pain to force my hand. You know that my powers hurt me, and you force me to use them anyway. And for what? To try and prove you were right?”
  “No. If anything, my efforts should tell you exactly how much we need your powers in this war. You asked me to help you win it. That’s all I’m doing.”
  “And if our baby dies because of it, that’s just another sacrifice for the greater good?!”
  The sculptures collapsed into mere piles on the floor, and you glared at him furiously, daring him to answer you.
  “I don’t believe your baby will be harmed by your abilities.”
  “Your beliefs are of no fucking relevance to me. Tell me if you would care… at all… if another child had to die in order for us to win this war?”
  He paused, but not to consider his answer, only how you would react to it.
  “No. I wouldn’t care. Wars kill people, of all ages, it doesn’t discriminate. Many more will die before it’s over, and if we’re going to be outraged over each and every one of them, then we won’t have time to fight.”
  Marcus closed his eyes and bowed his head.
  “That’s not the point, V. The point is that we only win if we still care. If we stop caring about life and suffering, then we might as well join the assholes. Can’t you see that?”
  “I haven’t lived like you have, Marcus. Caring has never been a luxury I’ve been able to enjoy. I have nothing. No possessions, no family, one person I would call a friend, and whom, despite my best efforts, I do care about.”
  “Then it should matter to you whether or not my family is safe and well.”
  “It does, and they are. When I say that I don’t believe that your wife’s powers will harm your child, I’m not just guessing. I can see your powers, Rain, the core of them. And while they do damage you a little bit every time you use them, I don’t believe that that damage actually harms you. I believe it slowly changes you.”
  “Changes me… Why? Into what?”
  “I couldn’t say for sure, but I don’t think it’s that kind of change. I think it’s simply trying to make you stronger, physically. As in, superhumanly strong. Invincible. And if anyone’s body could – it’d be yours.”
Question from an aspiring writer:
How do you stay motivated on one project for such a long time?
I personally have the attention span of a goldfish, and whenever I have an idea I either have to write down everything my brain can spew immediately or have it be lost in the void for eternity.
Never mind going back and turning my outline into a fic or gasp editing.
Do you have any tips and/or tricks you use?
Ok, I got completely carried away with this just fyi, but hopefully I ended up answering your actual question 😂 tl;dr at the bottom.
To be honest, staying motivated is a tricky thing, one that I feel I'm still learning how to do even now and varies a bit between shortfics/oneshots and multi-chaptered fics/longfics. For a bit of background, I've been writing fanfic for about a year and a half, but I've been writing original fiction since I was seven, over a decade and a half, and I still wrestle with it. It's definitely a learning process.
One thing I wish someone would have told me when I was starting out was the power of ~scenes~ in either multi-chapters or one-shots. All writing is ultimately made up of scenes, but if you're struggling to put things together, focusing on an individual scene, or multiple short scenes, might help you focus on getting something completed, and it's something that eventually can be applied to longer works as well. Writing has been a snowball process for me and once I started getting anything completed, I felt more secure in knowing what I could write comfortably and what was out of my comfort zone, eventually getting to the point where I felt comfortable tackling bigger and longer projects and knowing I could stay with them.
OoT's interlude chapters and the snippet series are both good examples of scenes because I wrote them with that intention...even if most of them are actually two or three scenes combined. "Gai meets Hashirama and Madara", "Hashirama gets revenge on Kakashi", "Tatsuki and Hashirama pick flowers for Madara, then give them to him" etc. were all my starting points.
If you're first starting out and feel comfortable with outlines of some sort before you start writing I would encourage you to try and write down a bullet point list of your scene(s) and what you know you want to happen in it.
"Gai meets Hashirama and Madara"
* Hashirama meets Gai first, mistakes him for Lee.
* Madara is shopping for a gift for Hashirama
* Madara finds Gai and Hashirama, they spar, Gai kicks his ass, both of them love him.
This is how my initial outline looked for the first interlude chapter, technically each one of these "points" are their own scenes stuck together. Outlining is different for everyone, some people like super specific points, others even less detail than this. For me this is a nice middle that gives me a roadmap for the chapter, but allows plenty of room to naturally diverge and add detail. Play around with outlines and see what you're comfortable with/what gives you the best results.
I'm not sure of your individual situation, but if you're struggling to put together fics in general something like this might help. Doing this process again and again personally helps me stay on track and gives me a sense of progress.
This sense of progress is ultimately key and why I think motivation differs slightly between one-shots/short fics and longfics. If you confine the individual scene to a one-shot, that might give you the motivation to complete it. Even if you start writing and you get interrupted/can't finish having in one setting, bullet points sometimes help inspire me to finish because I'm not starting from scratch when I return to writing. The whole "eat an elephant one piece at a time" thing was difficult for me to learn, but ultimately proved true. Learning to chip away at something bit by bit is going to be the only (healthy) way to write longer projects you can't complete in one sitting.
For longer projects, it's a similar beast just on bigger levels and with an added dimension. I would actually suggest something similar to OoT for a starting project because it is ultimately broken up into arcs that you know and can reference, instead of making a lot of og content for a fan setting. Maybe not go into it thinking, 'I'll do a complete rewrite' but once you feel like you're ready for a longer project 30K+ or so, the rough outline method and the ability to follow arcs was what got me started when I eventually decided to make the fic multi-chaptered. Try writing one arc and keep yourself contained in that. Now the added dimension aspect in general for longfics is that you eventually want to plot individual chapters in a multi-chaptered longfic and individual arcs (character, plot, etc). This comes with practice. I honestly don't think there's a way to get around that. It's something that I'm still trying to work on and I can look back at my early work and see how I've improved, how I can recognize where things didn't go well in certain places, and how I would change them if I was writing today. That's a good thing to be able to do, it means you've grown! The other thing I find that helps with staying motivated week after week for longer projects is to roughly know where you're going and to try to be excited about a plot point/scene/chapter/etc that you're going to write. Really try to hype yourself up. For me, it's a moment that comes at the very end of the chunin arc and I start grinning even thinking about it because I know it's going to be awesome. It's always what gets me through the rough days, imagining the moment I'll get to actually write that scene in its entirety (it's definitely already outlined and I mentally play it out at least twice a week lol) and is a big motivating drive.
So far I think this is pretty standard stuff if you're an outliner and you've been writing for a few years, but the other thing motivational-wise for me is having a schedule. From reading this message alone, I would not suggest it for you right away. Get comfortable finishing small things and feeling confident that if you let an idea sit for a week or two, you can pick it back up and continue. But if you eventually dip your toes into longfics (and don't plan to pre-write everything before you publish) that routine and rhythm really helps keep me going. I've made a commitment, I've posted it online, I'm going to stick to it. No one is going to jump down my throat if I fail to keep it (this is still a hobby and having fun is the most important thing) but in my mind I should commit to it unless something irl prevents me from doing so. Don't put a tight deadline on yourself, I'd start with once a month or if you write shorter chapters every three weeks. This also would help you build up and get a readership, interaction being another big motivational key.
Also, it's important to accept that sometimes you bite off more than you can chew, and when you feel completely demotivated from a fanfic project...it's okay to drop it. It's okay to take a step back and work on something else. Maybe you'll come back to it, maybe you won't. If you can, try to pinpoint what it was about that project that made you demotivated, were you pushing yourself too much and you got burnt out, was it an ongoing series and your interest for canon lagged and so did the fic, was it just too stressful to keep juggling plotpoints, etc. and keep that in mind moving forward. Every experience can be a learning one and eventually make you a better writer that can eventually tackle those bigger projects. Don't be afraid to take on big aspirational projects, but don't walk into them blind either. Above all, and this is repeated a lot because it's true, enjoy what you write. Some days you might not. That's true with anything, but any project you take on the good should outweigh the bad.
This is my wrap up of the motivational section but I also wanted to throw my two-cents in about editing because "oh no editing" is a perspective I've seen from a lot of writers, and used to have myself, but I think is going to stifle your progress in the long run.
Here's the thing: you need to look forward to editing.
You don't have to be jumping for joy, but editing, imo, should be a positive thing. You have all these great ideas, you made it into a fic, something you wrote, and now you get to go back and make it even better! This is a tough attitude to adopt. I'm not going to pretend otherwise. It took me a long time to unlearn the negative attitude and even then sometimes I still wish the editing was already done once I type in the last period. But I've learned to at least appreciate what editing does and I try to think to myself as I'm going through and making changes things like "wow, this suddenly became so much better. X plot point that I thought of ten pages from now is suddenly being hinted at and doesn't come out of left field. The transition points are a lot cleaner, it's not so jarring anymore. I bet the readers are going to love this little detail. Here's some foreshadowing that I hope someone picks up bc it's going to come back in like 5 chapters from now" it's hard, especially when you start, but this is something you made, and now are actively making better and that's something to celebrate.
I hope this helps anon! I know it's a lot and I'm by no means an expert but I've been doing this for more than a decade because I love it and I want to help others get into writing to! I have no problem answering any writing questions you may have if you find this helpful!
tl;dr
-motivation is slightly different between short/long fics.
-starting out, learn to outline by scenes and focus on finishing small projects and getting to a point where you feel like you can put something down and come back and pick it up again in a week. Completion is key and will help you feel satisfied/know your limits.
-long projects also can work on the scene-to-scene outline but now with individual chapters and individual arcs. It's tough to balance both but comes with practice. Bit-by-bit is key, as is having 'one moment you can't wait to write', possibly a schedule if it works for you, and reader feedback are all huge long-term motivational points.
-editing is tough but learn to look forward to it instead of dreading it.
Hi Shanna! I really liked how detailed and technical ur dance ranking of twice was--as someone who has no formal dance experience, it was enlightening. Would u mind doing one for bts? Only if u want to of course :)
Hello! I have a few of these in my inbox, so yes! I will do this one for bts (but then I must stop before this becomes my blog LOL). I’ll give the same caveats I gave for Twice, though. 1) Dance is always somewhat subjective because it’s an art form. I can talk about technique, but at a certain point my favorite dancer might not be someone else’s favorite dancer because of performance quality, and 2) ALL OF BTS ARE GREAT DANCERS! You don’t become a professional performance artist without already being head and shoulders above the rest. At the end of the day, all are fantastic.
NOTE: Please don’t use my words on any other platform/to respond to the boys. I’m posting only to give some insight to their skills, not to try and critique BTS. They have dance coaches, trainers and choreographers for that. They absolutely do not need some random person on the internet telling them what they should be doing.
With that in mind, here are my personal thoughts/loose ranking of bts at dancers:
1. Jimin. Not that I’m biased. LOL but seriously, part of the reason I’m drawn to Jimin is because he’s such a fantastic performer. With dance, a lot of people think it’s just body type which can make or break a dancer. To some extent, this is true. If you aren’t born with amazing arches, turnout or flexibility, there’s only so much you can do to improve. That said, there’s a certain intrinsic performance quality which also can’t be taught. You either have it, or you don’t and Jimin has it. It’s mesmerizing to watch him on stage. He has such fantastic control when he dances; his execution of choreography is flawless, but he also puts his own spin on things without standing out too much (a bad thing, when you’re dancing as part of a group!) Jimin does have a background in contemporary/ballet,  which is different from Hobi. One of the places this is visible is in how grounded Jimin is with his transitions/how he finishes his movements. This is SUPER dorky of me lmao, but one of my favorite moves I’ve ever seen him do is this roll up from the ground at 2:05. The absolute CONTROL Jimin has; his heels don’t move an inch, which is so hard to do. Another impressive move to me was the jump Jimin did in the Dynamite dance break (1:09). Neil Haskell did this freaking move all the time on SYTYCD lmao, and it was a staple “trick” on the dance circuit for years, because it’s hard and requires a gymnast/martial arts background. LOTS of control and complicated timing. I could honestly go on for pages about Jimin’s performance quality, but I’ll stop and say one other thing. I occasionally see people praising Jimin as an amazing contemporary dancer (on par with professional contemporary dancers), and I do think it’s important to clarify Jimin diverged from that path nearly ten years ago to become an Idol dancer. Those are two very different styles of dance and although Jimin is FANTASTIC, it’s okay for him not to be the best at every single dance style! lol he’s the first one to say (because he has, while watching the black swan orchestral video) he couldn’t do some of the things professional contemporary dancers can do. (I will add though, yoongi is also right in that I have full faith Jimin COULD have done those things, had he chosen to pursue that path). ANYWAYS. I’ve rambled enough about how much I love Jimin. ONWARD!
2. Hoseok. Surprise, surprise! LOL okay, so let me start by saying out of all BTS, Hoseok is what I consider the smartest dancer. What I mean by that is, the man never burns out. He knows when to conserve his energy and when to go all out. Hoseok is the master of rise and fall in intensity, and there’s a reason he’s highly regarded by all dancers in the industry. Hoseok also seems to have a choreographer’s mind, whereas you don’t see this as much with Jimin. To clarify, being a dancer and being a choreographer are two separate things. It’s like being a soccer player versus being a coach. Being a choreographer requires a big-picture mentality not all dancers have. Hoseok has this though, and you can see this in the natural leadership role he takes whenever they’re rehearsing on their own. He sees mistakes, fixes transitions, etc. (it’s hot, but I digress). Hoseok has a background in various styles of hip-hop, which is really clear when he freestyles. He’s demonstrated popping, tutting, locking and more, which you really only learn through rigorous hip-hop training. His MMA 2019 solo is WILD because he showcases like, five different styles all within a minute. They’re all sub-genres of a genre (hip-hop), if that makes sense. He doesn’t have the same contemporary background as Jimin, which is somewhat apparent whenever BTS leans into more contemporary styles (spring day, black swan, etc). Hobi is good, don’t get me wrong, but his spot isn’t as natural, he’s not as flexible and sometimes you see him overthinking movements. But anyways, Hoseok fancams are the BEST. Go watch one today.
3. Jungkook. Jungkook has improved SO. MUCH. Y’ALL. I can’t stress this enough! A lot of BTS fans probably remember Big Hit sent Jungkook to LA for a few months prior to debut to get him to loosen up in his dancing/improve his performance quality, and boy did he ever. Overall, I think Jungkook’s biggest strengths are his 1) endless stamina (wtf lol) and 2) lately, performance quality. When I’m talking about stamina, I mean Jungkook always goes full-fucking-out in performances and it catches the audience’s eye. One example which comes to mind was during MMA 2019 Dionysus. If you start at like, 2:10, BTS does this really exhausting floor part and then you see everyone around him conserving their energy as they move into the next chorus. It’s supposed to be a breather in the choreo lmao but Jungkook is FULL OUT. It’s his intensity and strength which really makes him stand out as a dancer. If I had written this a year ago, I would’ve said Jungkook’s biggest weakness is contemporary dance. The flip side of the coin to being strong is it can be difficult to slow things down and display the same intensity with slower music. Then, he went and did Black Swan. Like... just watch this spring day performance and contrast it with this black swan one for jungkook. He has gotten SO MUCH BETTER at staying grounded, moving through his transitions, instead of rushing past them to get to the next step. I’m just really proud of him. I still think hobi + jimin have a leg up on him, but Jungkook is a close third.
4. Taehyung. When you get to Taehyung + Yoongi, things start to get blurry. But since this is a list of my personal preferences, I’m going to put Taehyung first because for me, performance is everything. In my opinion, Taehyung’s performance quality is second only to Jimin. More immature dancers will often refer to performance as “making faces.” I.e., purse your lips on count five, smile on count 8 and frown on count 1. A mature dancer though, knows dancing is really an extension of acting. You need to embody the emotions of the song and convey them to your audience, and not just through your facial expressions! I think Tae does a really great job of this, and I’ll often watch his fancams, even though his dance technique isn’t as strong as say, Jimin or Hobi. That’s Taehyung’s main weakness, in my opinion. If he’d started dancing at an earlier age, or taken ballet/contemporary.... lord, idk LOL. help us all.
5. Yoongi. THIS MAN! Used to be a b-boy and the background is crystal clear if you’ve ever watched a Yoongi fancam (and if you haven’t, what are you doing with your life?) There’s an effortless quality to his movement and, when he wants to, his strength + performance quality rival Jungkook or Taehyung. That said, I think the main reason I’m not ranking Yoongi above them is consistency. Yoongi, simply put, isn’t a dancer. He’s a rapper/producer who likes to dance and enjoys dancing as part of BTS. I’m not saying he doesn’t like it, but it’s not his main passion, unlike some of the others. His intensity can vary depending on his visibility, which again, isn’t a bad thing. When Yoongi does turn it on, he turns it ON. He’s also very comfortable onstage, which is important. Yoongi doesn’t hesitate in his improv (esp. in his solos or rap line performances), which gives his stage quality a more natural ease.
6/7. Namjoon + Seokjin. I honestly don’t know who I would put as seventh; it’s hard to pick. And again, I don’t consider either of them to be bad dancers. It’s just when you have a group of people and some have prior dance experience/a strong passion for dance, and some don’t... it is what it is! I will say I think both Seokjin and Namjoon have grown tremendously over the past years. They’ve become so much more comfortable onstage, and it really shows in their performance quality. Sometimes, being confident you won’t look stupid is half the battle LOL. The other thing I’ll say is their execution of choreography is always down pat. You’ll rarely see either one messing up the steps, which means they practice a LOT. Sure, there are areas where their technique could be improved. Quality of transitions, staying grounded through difficult moves, always using their spot on turns... but I think it’s amazing that, despite their lack of formal dance training, they both keep up with some of the above dancers. Like... fuck it up, guys.
and that’s all! thank you for reading if you made it this far LOL WOO, BTS!
Bisexuality didn't "feel right" as a label because you're biphobic and will do anything to distance yourself from bisexuality. Get well soon, the bi community will be here when you're ready.
Are you the raging homophobe anon back for round two or a new guy? ...It doesn’t really matter, you people are all the same.
If you are the same anon, then now I’m extra pissed off at you because do you have any idea how difficult it is to make fun of your messages? You’re making this really hard for me. First you send a five word ask declaring me a homophobe with no details, and it took a lot of thinking to come up with a vaguely funny response to such a lackluster prompt. You’re a really bad improv partner.
And now you send me this shit. Sorry everybody, no jokes today, now I’m actually just fucking furious.
Let me tell you a story, anon. When I was an innocent little twelve year old back in the far of reaches of 2011, I first discovered Tumblr, and soon enough I was learning about different genders and sexualities, and began exploring my own identity. As you already know since you’re sarcastically quoting me talking about my own fucking feelings, I’d been having a minor sexuality crisis for several years at that point, since gay, straight and bisexual were the only label I’d known before then, and none of them fit me. Despite me trying all of them. Multiple times. You condescending piece of shit.All this was resolved by me stumbling across a post defining pansexuality, and that being the first and only sexual identity that’s ever actually felt right for me. It clicked instantly, and has continued to be my sexuality for literally a decade now.
But back when I first started entering the queer community, pansexuality was actually pretty controversial. So was bisexuality. The two were just lumped together actually, because according to the exclusionists back then, bi/pan people are attracted to the opposite sex, and therefor are basically just straight. Actually they rarely cared enough to bother differentiating between bisexual and pansexual people, they just lumped us all in together as a bunch of heteros pretending to be gay for attention and oppressing the real gays. What a bunch of special fucking snowflakes, pretending to be gay for attention. So there I was, a twelve year old queer kid with a brand new identity, being welcomed by a bunch of exclusionists angrily yelling about how I was definitely just a hetero faking it for attention, and being pansexual was Wrong and Bad. But it was okay, because the exclusionists knew better than me. They knew how I really felt, and what my real identity was. They could fix me. I just had to agree with everything they said and become the person they decided I was supposed to be.
I didn’t do that.
Let’s jump forward a few years. I was older, and still perfectly confident in my identity as a pansexual. I hadn’t considered any other parts of my identity. Why would I? I just never really thought much about gender. Then shortly after my fourteenth birthday, I watched a short film online about a trans boy figuring out his identity and working up the courage to come out to his mother. I don’t remember what it was called or most of the details. All I remember was the last scene where the boy and his mother got into an argument about him not feminine enough, which ended with him screaming that he wasn’t a girl. And then I unexpectedly burst into tears because neither was I.
So that was a fun surprise. Once I pulled through that unexpected sobbing breakdown in the middle of the night and re-evaluated my entire life, I realized that yeah. I really wasn’t a girl. I wasn’t a boy either. Fortunately by then I knew that nonbinary people were a thing, so I had plenty of options. I spent awhile feeling things out and experimenting with different labels and pronouns before finally settling on agender and they/them pronouns. Which was great! I felt better than ever, and was confident that I had my identity down and everything would be fine. But everything was not fine. Because I’d been so happy about the biphobia dying down that I hadn’t quite noticed the exclusionists switching targets. Now the nonbinary people were lying. What a bunch of special fucking snowflakes, pretending to be queer for attention. The ones who wanted to medically transition were declared to actually be poor confused trans people who couldn’t get over their internalized transphobia to accept their True Identities. And the rest of us... well, we were just a bunch of cishet special snowflakes playing at being trans for attention, and oppressing the real trans people. I wasn’t agender. I was a cis girl making up fake identities for attention, and calling myself nonbinary was Wrong and Bad. But it was okay, because the exclusionists knew better than me. They knew how I really felt, and what my real identity was. They could fix me. I just had to agree with everything they said and become the person they decided I was supposed to be.
I didn’t do that.
Step forward a few more years, now to eighteen year old me. There’s no dramatic revelations or long struggles this time, just a slow realization. Because I’d been single for years, and I wasn’t bothered by that. I actually enjoyed it. Marriage didn’t sound very appealing. Neither did dating. I’d dated people before, but I wasn’t sure if I actually wanted to; it was just... the thing I was supposed to do. I found people attractive, sure. But I hadn’t wanted to flirt with anyone. Actually, now that I was thinking about it, had I ever felt romantically attracted to anyone? I didn’t even want romance in fiction! So I experimented. Went on some dates just in case age made it more appealing (it didn’t). Began calling myself aromantic, and was pleasantly surprised to find that the longer I used it, the better it felt. It was right.
But once again, the exclusionists were back and even angier than ever. Because now aphobia was in full swing. After all, asexuality wasn’t really queer. It’s just not having sex! It’s basically straight! What a bunch of special fucking snowflakes, pretending to be queer for attention. And the aromantics, oh the aromantics who weren’t asexual were even worse. Because everyone knows that love is what makes us human. How could someone not feel romance? Us aro people weren’t just lying about our identities, we were pretending to not have feelings so that we could get away with using people for sex without commitment. Being aro meant I was an abusive sex crazed monster taking advantage of all the poor innocent allo’s. I wasn’t aromantic. I was a sexual predator making up a fake identity to take advantage of people, and even though I wasn’t actually sleeping around calling myself aro was Bad and Wrong. But it was okay, because the exclusionists knew better than me. They knew how I really felt, and what my real identity was. They could fix me. I just had to agree with everything they said and become the person they decided I was supposed to be.
And I didn’t fucking do that.
Look. I’ve been here for a very long time, and I have dealt with so many versions of exclusionist bullshit. Every aspect of my identity has been met with random fucking strangers online smugly informing me that I was wrong about myself and they were right. And that’s just the ones that wanted me to pretend to be something else; about half of the exclusionists didn’t make any attempts at conversion therapy, and instead skipped straight to suicide baiting. I’m not even getting into the actual homophobes I’ve had to deal with, or the TERF’s that have come after me under the assumption that I’m a trans woman. My point is, I’m pretty fucking used to this sort of thing.
This just hurts a little more, because like I said earlier, the first round of exclusionism I faced was just expanded biphobia. And the bi/pan community banded together in the face of that. We weren’t the exact same identities, but we were being treated the same, and we were similar enough that nobody really minded the difference. It was wonderful. Bi and pan people were a tightly knit group, and that was a sense of community I desperately needed when I was young. I’ve been seeing this coming for awhile. There’s been increasing amounts of bi people getting drawn in by exclusionist bullshit, and I’ve seen anti-pansexual sentiment growing. I just... really hoped it wouldn’t get this far. It’s sad, y’know? It feels like losing an old friend. I’m really disappointed that you think trying to force people out of their community is right. It’s fucking pathetic, and I hope that someday you’ll rediscover basic compassion and realize how much damage you’re doing to yourself and others. This sort of thing doesn’t help the bisexual community. It drives people away. It’s like the damage that TERF’s have done to the lesbian community; this sort of thing poisons the whole well. I hope you re-evaluate what you’re doing and find a more healthy mindset.
...But also at the same time: Who the fuck do you think you are? Take your condescending bullshit and shove it directly up your ass you fucking waste of oxygen. How the fuck dare you. Do you realize the fucking audacity it takes to claim to know someone's identity better than they do? You self centered egotistical douchebag. Your parents should feel ashamed for having raised such an utter failure of a human being. I’d tell you to go fuck yourself, but I can already tell you beat off twice a day to how fucking clever you think you are. If you ever darken my inbox again you’d better be damn sure you keep it anonymous, because if I find you I’ll kick your fucking teeth in, you smug piece of shit.
Breanna!! major spoilers below
I love that Parker is trying and failing miserably at teaching thief skills because she doesn’t know how to teach this particular student yet.
Harry’s first Leverage-client meeting! And Parker upset that Sophie is taking back the lead, a role that Parker isn’t ready to entirely hand over to Sophie.
Also poor Breanna, she thought she did well on the ‘follow the money’ but came up waaaay short. It’s like showing up for the first class of college thinking it’s just going to go over the syllabus except per the professor’s email there’s already homework due.
Oooh, game of nose-goes? What’s the role that Harry’s going to play that the other’s didn’t want? It can’t just be to avoid playing Sophie’s fake-husband.
“I’ve lose track of the marraiges but I only had one husband.” Where’s my fanfic of all the women Sophie married in her past?
Hahahahaha Breanna managed to pickpocket Harry but she got pickpocketed by Parker. And I love the explanation of “I’m Parker”.
“Get him with a misdemeanor.” Oh Breanna Breanna Breanna. Those can be bribed out of. And oof, Harry’s a bit mean about the whole ‘they don’t care and bribe their way out of trouble’ bit, meanwhile Eliot is very matter of fact. I hope Brianna finds her footing pretty soon.
"I assume it’s rather difficult to rob a casino in general?”/“Eh, kinda.” LMAO PARKER. Also!! Did the Leverage writers finally get to write their casino heist story?
That ‘clothes in trashbags from couch to couch’ sounds like something’s Breanna’s done. Felt a little too throw-away-y for it to not be from her past.
“Hardison used to get me the job. And sometimes, a 401(k).” AMAZING. I love this detail.
Etouffee and jambalaya Brick&Basil truck! “The crescent city’s best local food truck” I love that little sign on the side.
“Huh. I couldn’t find the ‘Get Eliot a 401(k)’ section in the manual.” Omg the manual referenced earlier is for Leverage-thievery-stuff, not just hacking stuff. And of course Hardison would leave a (15 volume) manual for his little sister.
"You can’t plan a grift with a flow chart.” You can if you’re Parker and the flow chart is flexible enough.
“Parker, are you using a flow chart for all your interactions?” Oh no. But at the same time, a sideways callback to how Sophie was using grifting tricks on the team/Nate just because she could.
Parker does a great southern bell accent.
“Renegade. That’s what they used to call me on the job.” Amazing.
“I didn’t put police on your resume!” Oh Brianna, there’s all sorts of reasons someone would leave a job off a resume, he’s just gotta go with one that’s not “it was too long ago”
“Where were you stationed?” Hm, and this is for a casino job? Shreveport. Has to be.
I’M RIGHT
“I don’t miss.” You are going to miss, that’s definitely a Special Disc. And... he misses.
Chaudry’s an attractive looking bad guy.
Parker and cereal!
Oh and Breanna can’t stand the temptation. Also that pearl for whatever reason looks fake, though that might be because I’m more used to fake pearls.
I bet Old Cop’s spreadsheet is gonna be important later.
“I told you not to do it.”/“You would’ve.” Yeah but Parker would have waited, not gone for it right then and there. But Parker doesn’t feel the need to prove herself. Breanna does.
And Sophie keeps it from spiraling out of control by being very matter of fact - they’ve all messed up, but Breanna’s mess up makes her recognizable, so she’s off the front lines for the con.
Breanna leaves out of frustration, only none of the three others notice. Hm. Is she going to go get into some more trouble? Oh, no, she’s gone to be alone out in their hideout’s courtyard.
“Let me guess, you’ve come to make me feel better.”/“Oh, I think I’d be about the worst person in the world for that job.” At least Harry knows his strengths and comforting others is not one of them.
“Oh, poor baby, all you have is money and good looks and privilege and access.” Ah, this is not just about having to be sidelined for this con.
“And what about you, seems like you could do just about anything and all of its scary, what do you want?” And Breanna’s obviously feeling a bit down on herself, but rather than follow her into that mood Harry turns it around on her, pointing out that she is ridiculously talented and can do a lot of things, she just needs to decide what she wants to do with those skills. Does she just want to fool around and mess up and have fun? Does she want to work? Does she want to laze about? Does she want to improve on the skills she has? Does she want new skills? Because each one of those takes her on a different trajectory with Leverage and the team.
“I want the world to stop sucking. ... This team, it says it can make a difference. Okay, fine. I’ll give it a shot. Because I love my brother, and because I’m desperate, not because I believe in hope or something stupid like that.” I love her character motivation speech here.
I’m laughing at Parker getting frustrated because she can’t hide the money fast enough. And then she figures out a way, but they’ll have to make the dress bigger. (Oh, are they going to get the client involved with the dress design? That’d be cool!) And Parker and Sophie have a little talk about how Breanna wants to impress and that Parker’s going to have to teach her. And a reference to how the og team helped everyone on the team get better.
Now that is an amazingly poofy dress. I love it.
They did get the client involved with the dress alterations!! Yes!!
Eliot and Old Cop having cake together. And that’s gotta be some good cake with Eliot genuinely complimenting him.
Oh dear, Parker’s flowchart is getting caught because she’s sticking to it a little to hard, not letting it flow around her. It feels like she should be better at this though, with the 10-odd years that she’s had to do this without Sophie. But this might be more her falling back into old patterns, just like Sophie falling into patterns on leading the cons.
Ooh okay these guys are in on the con. Wait I should know these people?? I... don’t think so but maybe?
Flounce, flounce, kick
Oof. Too much money to carry out. Way too much. And Russian mob. (Is it a very distinctive tattoo Eliot?)
Okay the con’s gone off the rails, so it has to be rescued somehow. Breanna’s figured out a way (“did the math twice”) though everyone waits for Parker’s okay to go through with it. I don’t know exactly what it is - sink the vault into the river? Plant it on various gamblers? Make it seem like Chaundry was stealing from himself? But it rests on Breanna being right and not just showing off. But Parker’s seen that when Breanna’s under pressure - not fake 'practice’ pressure, the real stuff - she can perform, its just when she’s trying to impress that she fails.
“You cut your way through an ice cave. You escaped a gorilla enclosure. And you catered a wedding for the mob.”/“It wasn’t catering. It was a food sensory experience.” Is that a reference back to season one? If not, I really want to know more about that not-catering job!
Oh no!! Old Cop took a hit for Eliot. And as soon as the mafia goon is taken out, Eliot takes time to make sure Old Cop is all right. (If they mess up the con, the family loses the house but they can if needed con Chaundry again and get the house back. If Old Cop dies they can’t get him back.)
Okay Breanna at least has to know the baddies see real camera footage again, right? And Eliot seemed to almost deliberately not-quite look at the camera. They’ve got to be counting on the bad guys finding out and hitting the emergency lock.
All the money’s gone! But... how? Did Parker take Eliot with her into a vent? Fake wall?
Oh sir you are not good enough to accuse Sophie of having conned you without her turning it right back around on you. And she gets a one-person gloat too.
Lol and the pearl is gone.
Squish? Oho. They went through the floor and down the river.
Aww, Breanna’s joined Eliot on the ‘receiving end of Parker’s too-hard physical affection’.
“That was ... my cake, Parker! He made it special for me!” Methinks Eliot doth protest too much about him and Old Cop not being friends.
“I want to take on the bad guys. I have to learn everything.” ‘Have to’ is an interesting choice.
“Parker. My first memory is of 9/11.” Whereas that’s my.... 9th? 10th? grade math-class memory. Breanna's grown up in a very different world from Parker and Hardison - probably Eliot’s background is closest to hers.
And.... Parker how did you steal that pearl? Is this an exercise left to the viewers or a bit of ‘it’s tv, we’re having fun’? (Or both!)
Youth Coach!Bokuto x Youth Coach!Reader
Tumblr media
Hey Anon, so sorry for getting to this so late, but I finally had the time to do this request! Hopefully this is kinda close to what you were expecting!
- Kiwi
~~
Being a sports med college student is definitely not the easiest thing in the world
Why? Well...because college is a thing. College = broke bitch
 No tengo dinero :(
So you figured, “hey getting a part time job won’t be the worst thing in the world”  You’d be able to make some extra cash
¡logramos este pan!
There’s a youth center close to campus that’s hiring so you figured why not because
You love kids (most of the time)
You have decent volleyball experience to be able to coach since you did play for a while
Few weeks later you heard back from them and you got the job!
Your boss asks if you can come in a couple days before your first day so you can get used to the place and get an idea of how things work
So you get there and you see a VERY familiar floof of white hair sticking out from around the corner
You had to do a double take for a second
Bo.
Bo?
BO?!?!?
He turns around and then he has to do a double take before he recognizes you
“Y/N?!?!?!”
“KOUTAROU?!?!?”
“What are you doing here?”
“What are you doing here????!”
(excessive hooting ensues)
But when you finish he’s like
“I work here as a volleyball coach...oh hold up, are you the new girls’ coach?”
“Yup!”
He was so happy when he found out y’all were working the same shift
Alrighty so backtrack, you guys know each other because you played on the Fukurodani Girls’ Volleyball team
Since first year, you managed to befriend this hyper-energetic kid
You saw this crackhead all 3 years of your high school life which meant that your life was guaranteed to never have a dull moment upon meeting him
And you definitely didn’t have a crush on him what? who? (Y/N)? idk her ahaha
But seriously he's prime boyfriend material ur just a weenie who had fOUR YEARS to shoot your shot but u didn’t boo thumbs down
But tbh he ADORES you
You’re his precious (but scary when necessary) bean and will fight anybody to protect you
You honestly don’t know what you did that made him decide to become captain of Protect Y/N Squad but he is
Aaaand that stayed true even in college. He was so excited when he found out y’all were attending the same university
But since college is a big meanie, you guys haven’t been able to spend as much time with each other >:((
Needless to say, when Bokuto found out you worked the same shift as him, he was so freakin happy
Literally jumping off the walls
He was just really happy to spend more time with you
Before your shifts start, you guys arrive early so you can just chill in the lounge
Actually, more like you’re getting school work done and uh, Bokuto is uhm, well...being him
But it’s not his fault!!
Bo is not a school person
That’s just not his specialty
But he is so so smart in other ways and you will s c r a p with anyone who says otherwise
Anyways
It wasn’t uncommon for a co-worker to walk in and see you getting some schoolwork done, and Bokuto, well, being him
Exhibit A : you’re working on an assignment that’s due later this week, but since you have some time now, you decided to get some of it done until --
“Hey (Y/N) if I punch myself and it hurts, does that mean I’m strong, or I’m weak?”
“Why don’t you find out for yourself?”
“I’ve been trying to! My arm just really hurts, and I still don’t know the answer!”
*Pouty Bo has entered the chat*
Or Exhibit B: For once you’re not doing homework. Bokuto actually brought you some smoothies he bought on his way to work, so y’all are just sipping on smoothies until --
“Hey (Y/N), ya ever notice how cold water tastes sharp, but warm water tastes smooth? Like isn’t that whack?”
_φ( ̄ー ̄ )
All jokes aside, he’s really good with kids
His group of 9-10 year olds - The Owlets - absolutely LOVE him (but who wouldn’t?)
Honestly you were kinda surprised at how well he gets along with the kids but not really
Let's be honest he’s the same mental age as them
He’s just as childish as them
Whenever a volleyball from your side of the room rolls over to his, he takes it upon himself to send it back by spiking it towards you
Luckily, you’re able to receive it, and it doesn’t cause much trouble
Other times he’ll just openly sling his arm over your shoulder, and put all his weight on it but uh
he has this thing called... M U S C L E
AND THERE’S SO MUCH
I mean have you seen those back muscles? Literally a blessing from the high heavens themselves
He’s always been toned and had muscle since high school BUT OH MY GOD he got SO BUFF in college and geez those are h e a v y
But your eyes are being blessed everyday so can you really complain?
The answer is no you can’t complain
But you will complain because you’ve had a crush on this mf since high school and yanno that wack feeling when you have unresolved feelings for someone and you feel weird when you look at them?
Like you kinda have feelings but you’re not sure?
Or you’re wondering if your feelings are feeling feelings or they’re just old, stale feelings coming back to harass you?
Mhmm that’s you
And uh you’re not really vibin with it
So the fact that he’s gotten even buffer is not helping your case
AND
He’s always been a sweetie but since college he’s been taking WOMEN’S STUDIES COURSES
You asked him about it and he said he wanted to make sure he was socially aware so he can “use his male privilege to help women make their voices heard”
Is he even real??
He’s drinking his respecc wahman juice ™ everyday, twice a day
Luckily, for the next few weeks, everything goes super smoothly
Your group of kids - The Penguins - are very driven in trying to improve themselves
And kids who want to get better at something they’re passionate about is absolutely ADORABLE
So while you guys are cleaning the gym up Bokuto asks you if you could come to his game on Saturday
And bring the kids ofc because it’d be a good learning experience
Obviously you agree cause you’re not missing out on watching him play volleyball
So it’s finally the long awaited Sunday, and you get there kinda early just so you have more time to make sure all the kiddos get there to the meeting spot safely
And in case you run into a certain volleyball player before the game starts
Turns out, Lady Luck was on your side today
You’re walking down the hallway when you spot a certain owl-haired man
“Koutarou!”
He whips around so fast and his face lights up upon seeing you call out his name
He sprints speed walks over to you
“(Y/N)! I thought you’re supposed to meet up with the kiddos?”
“Yeah, but I got here early so I ended up walking around for a bit,”
In his eyes, you’re so adorable right now
You face is kinda flushed with a light pink spread across your cheeks, and your hair just flows around you and he’s just so in awe
His trance was broken when you checked the time and realized you should be heading to the meeting spot soon
“Ah, I should probably head over to the meeting spot. Good luck, Koutarou! I’ll be cheering you on with the kids!”
“Thanks, I’m looking forward to it!”
So you guys go your separate ways, and make it to the meeting spot 5 minutes in advance. All the kids show up on time, and the parents saying thank you for watching their kid, etc.
You bring them to the front row of the cheering section, but a little off to the left so the kids don’t get caught up in whatever the cheering section happens to be doing
The game starts and the kids are in absolute awe over Coach Bokuto and tbh so are you
Now, this isn’t the first time you’ve seen him play, but goddamn every time you do it’s so mesmerizing
He does a complete 180 whenever he plays
Completely focused, and all his movements are precise
 and the back muscles oh the high heavens are really testing you today
You can’t help but notice how the energy from the crowd makes him so excited
At some point you could’ve sworn that he was scanning the cheering the section trying to find you
He totally was, and he spots you and the kiddos and it makes him so happy
His captain had to snap Bokuto back into the game since he got distracted, and that made you laugh a lil
The rest of the game progresses smoothly
Really smoothly actually. The team had a comfortable lead and they were match point from winning their second set, so they were doing juuuuust fine
Throughout the game, you point on things that should be brought to attention, and the kids kept asking question, which you were more than happy to answer
The match ends with victory for Tokyo U with a solid 3-1 win, and you escort the kids back to the meeting spot where their parents are supposed to pick them up
What you didn’t expect was for Bokuto to be there too
The kids sprint over and flock him, showering him with compliments about his performance during the game
The parents arrive, and one of the parents asked if they could get a group picture with everybody, and soon all the parents were getting their phones out
Ya know the thing where one parent asks to take a picture and now you have a gallery of parents and like 60% of them take like 2 mins just to take one picture?
Yeah, that
All the parents ended up with a whole bunch of cute pics, and the kids were on their ways home
Since Bokuto was still in his uniform, you walk with him back to the locker rooms, and just as you were about to turn the corner, he suddenly slings his arm over your shoulder, and puts all of his body weight onto your back. You’re really trying hard to shimmy out from under him, but he’s SO FREAKING HEAVY
(It’s the muscles, they are d e n s e)
Ofc he notices this and whines about it
“(Y/N)! Why’re you trying to escape?? I’m so sore, please let me use you as a human crutch for like 2 minutes!”
“Ew, no, Koutarou. You’re still sweaty and smelly, get off of meeee”
You somehow manage to drag your poor body to the locker room doors with this man child dragging behind
“I’ll wait out here Kou--”
Before you could finish your sentence, Bokuto turned you around and wrapped his arms around you, enveloping you into a warm hug
“Thanks for coming to the game, (Y/N)”
Your brain is not comprehending ANyTHing is boy is saying
Your high school crush is hugging you like it's some shoujo manga like eXCUse mE?
And sis you’re not missing this opportunity, so you wrap your arms around his torso, and you can feel him tense up a little underneath your hands
Your brain finally catches up to you, and you’re able to formulate thoughts before you speak (cause otherwise you’re pretty sure you would’ve stuttered like a blubbering mess)
“Of course. Anytime, Koutarou”
“I’m gonna go clean up. Do you mind waiting for me?”
“Not at all. Take your time.”
“Ok, thanks. I’ll be out soon.”
Just as he pulled away from the hug, he leans down to kiss your cheek before reaching out for the door handle
Hold up
He
Kissed
You
On
The
Cheek
AND HE’S TRYNA RUN AWAY FROM WHAT HE DID
NAH UH
Before you convince yourself what you’re about to do might change the whole dynamic of your guys relationship, you grab a whole muscley arm, and pull him down a little, and you return a kiss on his left cheek
Oh shit
Oh shit
Ohhhhhhhhhhhh dear god
WE HAVE BUNGLED THIS MISSION
In order to save yourself from any further potential embarrassment, you let go of his arm, and skedaddle (skidoodle ur dicc is now a noodle)
over to the lobby
This poor boy
One (1) whole confused owl
You kissed  him back…
YOU KISSED HIM BACK
Kinda. It was on the cheek, not like a kiss in reciprocity
*YOU KISSED HIM ALSO
He realized he’s standing there like an idiot so he hurries into the locker room and showers because even he recognizes that he stank
Mansweat
But he’s literally thinking about that cheek kiss the entire time he’s freshening up
And so were you
You’re sitting on a bench in the lobby trying to think of how to talk to him without making it awkward
But the fact that your heart spazzing out in your chest, and your stomach is doing backflips certainly doesn’t help
But hey...you kissed your crush (go you!)
Time passes a lot quicker when you’re thinking about smooching Bokuto because he’s walking towards you with this bag slung over his shoulder
You get up from the bench sweating anxiety bullets and start heading over to him
“Hey Kou, about earlier I--”
Before you could finish your sentence, Bokuto who is also sweating anxiety bullets but at least he’s smelling nicer quickly interrupted you
“(Y/N) I’M SO SORRY I DIDN’T MEAN TO KISS YOU I JUST THINK YOU’RE SUPER CUTE!”
He’s yelling cause (duh it’s Bo) he can’t help it, but like you also get caught up in it so:
“OH IT’S OK DON’T WORRY ABOUT IT, IT’S COOL..!”
“JUST BECAUSE I LIKE YOU DOESN’T MEAN WE CAN’T BE FRIENDS...ALL CASUAL AND SHIT”
“aHAHAHA CASUAL YEAH YEAH THAT’S RIGHT, WE’RE TOTALLY BUDS ”
“I MEAN JUST FRIENDS IS CHILL, THAT’S COOL I RESPECT THAT, BUT I’D LIKE IT IF YOU WENT OUT WITH ME”
“GOOD CAUSE I WANNA GO OUT WITH YOU!”
Rip to everyone’s eardrums
Meanwhile…
Akaashi: “I suddenly feel super embarrassed… but I don’t know why.”
Back to the main show:
“COOL ARE YOU FREE THIS SATURDAY?”
“YEAH”
“cOOL”
“COOL”
*aggressive hand shake*
Passersby are very confused
But oh my god this poor boy
His hands are shaking, and he has armpit sweat galore
But it’s ok you’re just the same as him
Less pitsweat, but still stressed
Poor Bo was so out of it that when heard his phone go off he jumped a lil bit
Luckily it was a text from you
From: (Y/N) [8:26 pm]
“You’ll ace this date! <3”
Cut to Bokuto, having the meltdown of the century
Enemy Yut Lung & Eiji one shot: Warning  this one is not romantic or soft plantonic friends.
“ I’ve decided i’m going to be Ash Lynx’s enemy,” Yut Lung casually states.
Eiji freezes the implications of this statement slowly seeping into his brain. What the hell was this guys problem? He said he was just like Ash if that was the case why did he want to make his life harder?
At first Eiji had viewed Ash as untouchable, a powerful shonen hero like the ones from his childhood heroically fighting against evil men who wanted to control him but after that night. Eiji had seen the look of devastation on Ash’s face as he put a bullet in Shorter Wong’s brain. Even covered in the blood of his enemies ,Ash had such a shattered look about him.
The nights that followed were full of raw howls and heaving sobs as Eiji soothed Ash Lynx back to sleep. By day his gang members cowered from his wraith since the slightest thing they did seemed to set him off.
He cann’t handle anymore he’s been brutalized for far too long and as much as Eiji wished he was like those magically girl characters who made everything all right. He couldn’t just reach inside and rewire Ash’s brain or fix his heart with gentle fingers. All the love in the world could not repair the damage Golzine had inflicted.
Yut Lung had the means to tear what was left of Ash’s heart straight from his chest and crush it under his heel. Which is why Eiji said what he did next.
“ If your Ash’s enemy then i’ll be yours!” Eiji proclaimed defiantly.
Yut Lung’s usual hateful mocking expression was replaced by pure shock. Then he laughs.
“ Very well if you're my enemy” Yut Lung motions to the gun in Eiji’s hand and raises a delicate eyebrow as if to say get on with it.
Eiji raises the gun and points it at the other boy with one bullet and he can get rid of one more problem for Ash, but something about the other boy’s eyes makes him hesitate. There’s an uncomfortable familiar vibe to them that unnerves him and makes Eiji unable to pull the trigger and end things. Also killing an unarmed person, even one as vile as Yut Lung still isn’t right. It goes against everything he’s been taught.
“ Disgraceful, how can you be my greatest enemy if you cann’t even pull the trigger?” Yut Lung looks at him as if he’s a disappointing liar who cheated him.
Eiji’s plan was too escape and run directly to save Ash. he was just about to get back to that plan. When the younger boy who had looked pissed when he saw Eiji in the elevator shows up and tackles Eiji to the ground.
“ You ok?” he asks Yut Lung softly
“ I’m fine!” Yut Lung brushing the boy's concern away. “ Just get him back to his room” he snapped with irritation…
Eiji threw himself upon Yut Lung Lee who moved swiftly out of the way, he fell and smacked his head on the door.
“ Is this your way of persuading me you’ll be a good enemy or a court jester?” Yut Lung said with some amusement.
“ How did you know?” Eiji asked rubbing his head
“ I’m not the person to fall for the same trick twice” Yut Lung said …
Eiji shoves his dinner into the face of Yut Lungs servant and hurls the plate at him, the other boy dodges.
“ I’ll have another plate brought up for you, if you toss this one you can go to bed hungry” The younger boy warns with a pleasant smile…
“ How the hell did he get a lighter!” Yut Lung exclaimed furiously using expensive cloth to douse the flames to save his precious plants as the guards restrained a smirking Eiji...
“ Fine you can be my enemy, I certainly hate you enough” Yut Lung spat.
“ Great now please free me so i can save Ash” Eiji said.
“ No, though you have managed to irritate me, your technique is sloppy and unrefined. If you're going to be my enemy, you're going to become worthy of that title” Yut Lung makes a motion to his mafia goons who drag and blindfold Eiji when they take it off he sees he’s in an underground room.
“ Lets start with your breathing” Yut Lung states.
“ breathing?” Eiji demands
“ Its loud i can hear you coming, we need to change that” Yut Lung says simply “ But i need to” the mafia heir cuts him off “ I’ll keep an eye on the Ash situation” …
“ What? you have a shooting range on your estate?” Eiji exclaims looking at the fancy targets one of Yut Lung’s guys hands the boy a gun.
“ You should see the interrogation room in the basement” Yut Lung says sardonically and lines up his weapon and takes aim bam bam bam! Three straight shots in a row.
“ I cann’t tell if your fucking with me” Eiji said with a scowl.
“ Here” Yut Lung hands him a gun. Eiji frowns, forgive me Ash but i’m doing this to save you. He takes a few shots.
“ Disappointing” Yut Lung states.
“ What are you talking about i got half of them” Eiji argues.
“ Half isn’t good enough in a shoot out with me and my men” Yut Lung shot back. “ Lets talk about your shooting stance”
“ Ash showed me this!” Eiji argues.
“ What works for one person doesn’t work for everyone” Yut Lung informed him. “ Lets try some different stances and see if we can find one, That works better for you”
Eiji placed his arms and legs where Yut lung told him “ This is weaver stance its a boxer type, it might work better. You have a wider frame, Ash is more slender in build.”
It was surreal Eiji thought being taught by the one person he couldn’t stand who actually had some good advice. He found the second time he actually hit more of his targets. Yut Lung made him practice until almost nightfall...
Eiji found his days of being a captive were now loaded with lessons every day he was led blindfolded to some obscure location of the house. Where Yut Lung would instruct him on one topic or another...
“ Again” Yut Lung commands as Eiji pulls yet another acupuncture needle from his body. He was just glad they were clean; he still had awful memories of suddenly blacking out from whatever horrible substance the mafia heir put in those things.
Though he could do without Yut Lungs constant criticisms which made him want to curl in a corner and cry and took him back to his school days of struggling to balance athletics and still maintain perfect scores on every test. Eiji told himself at least the mafia heir wasn’t focused on Ash. Besides it was the same pressures he grew up with and this time he was determined not to crack…
A month later and Eiji was sitting at the dining room table apparently after no instances for a couple of weeks and Yut Lung had loosened his restrictions. Though he was still being lead to and tied to the table with one hand.
The boy who recaptured him who Eiji learned was called Sing Soo Ling was loading up and gobbling down what appeared to be multiple dishes.
“ You can at least use a napkin. I'm sure the Wong’s didn’t raise you to be a pig” Yut Lung remarks.
Sing responds by opening his mouth and giving the other boy a view of his chewed food. Yut Lung makes a soft sound of disgust as he delicately dabbles at his mouth. He turns to Eiji “ You made some slight improvements” he remarks. Coming from Yut Lung, it's almost a complement.
“ Are you seriously training this guy to be your enemy?” Sing demands incredulously
“ Honestly he wasn’t even my first choice” Yut Lung responds.
“ You ritch types are weird” the fourteen year old said.
“ i don’t go around with something called dragon fang” Yut Lung retorted.
“ Maybe if you did, you’d get taken hostage less!” Sing responded.
“ He got the jump on me. How is that my fault?” Yut Lung exclaims
Eiji watches incredulously as the two of them get into a pointless argument going back and forth there’s no heat to it really, rather a sense of comfort. Its the kind of argument he might have with his younger sister. Its just odd seeing this casual behavior from Yut Lung Lee of all people.
“ So Eiji has this guy dangled you over a snake pit yet?” Sing asks cheerfully
“ Where did you hear something so ridiculous?” Yut Lung complains
“ Servant gossip” Sing replies.
“ They’ve gotten chattier since my brothers illness” Yut Lung scowls.
“ Come on Yue don’t be so uptight” Sing coaxes
“ What’s the point of having a staff if they don’t know how to stay quiet” the mafia heir points out.
“ Their not spilling any secrets, just making up odd stories ” Sing pointed out.
“ If i hear one word of actual Lee businesses pass anyone's lips…” Yut Lung was interrupted by the entrance of a servant girl who whispered something in his ear.
“ What!” Yut Lung hurled one of the dishes at the wall.
“ Getting hysterical again!” Sing teased him.
“ Shut up!” Yut lung got up “ No one can seem to find Ash”...
Eiji sits in his room Yut Lung is too off kilter to continue his training. Sing gives him updates saying that the mafia heir spends a lot of time sending his people out, waiting by the phone and has even headed out a few times himself. It worries him that Yut Lung hasn’t actually given up on Ash. So he does push ups and pull ups every day to keep in shape. Eiji practices the stealth techniques Yut Lung showed him. He steals a pen so he can practice writing the codes on the walls he was taught to decipher and study. He has Sing bring him firearms so he can practice taking them apart and putting them back together.
Then Yut Lung visits him a few days later“ We found Ash” Eiji watches all of the tension from the past few days vanish from him with those three words. This guy was actually concerned for Ash?
“ You really are devoted to becoming my enemy” Yut Lung comments tracing codes on the walls with astonishment.
“ Ash?” Eiji asked
“ He escaped from one of Dino Golzine’s secret government funded organizations ” Yut Lung looks bothered like this is something he hadn’t known about. “ He’s been experimenting on criminals with Banana Fish” …
Its one more day then he’ll finally see Ash and the others again. “ Now before our final lesson there’s someone i want you to meet” Yut Lung leads Eiji into a room down the hall and opens the door. He gasps there’s a grown man with eyes like Shorter’s drooling on himself! He groans at Yut Lung who touches his cheek lightly.
“ Eiji may i introduce Hua Lung my older brother”
“ You used that horrible drug on him!” Eiji backs up.
Its wrong, even worse is the way Yut Lung pulls his living human puppet into an affectionate embrace, his eyes gleaming with hate.
“ Hua Lung was my former enemy” the younger boy pauses. “ Tomorrow i’ll be giving you back to Ash”
Eiji stares stunned at how his arms are still wrapped so tenderly around the one who he had so thoroughly destroyed.
“ Don’t look so surprised” Yut Lung says, misunderstanding the reason for his reaction.
“ I only wanted to deliver Ash to Golzine to force him to be my enemy” Yut Lung looked Eiji in the eyes over the shoulder of his zombie brother. “ Now you are my worst enemy, who will someday destroy me”...
“ Eiji!” Ash embraces him tightly as if he never wants to let him go. Eiji manages to persuade Ash, Yut Lung was just giving him a safe place to stay. The blond would go ballistic if he knew the truth.
Their just about to go then Yut Lung pulls him into a hug Eiji’s body goes entirely stiff he feels the softness of the other boys hands on his skin his voice in his ear like a lovers caress “ Goodbye for now, Eiji”
then the hands are gone his body feels chilled as he remembers exactly who else was embraced with such vindictive tenderness.
“ Eiji .what’s wrong?” Ash asked
“ Yes Big Brother Eiji are you cold?” Yut Lung asks innocently.
Eiji suddenly feels the full weight of the obligation he’s agreed to pressing down on him. How is he supposed to look at those oddly familiar eyes and manage to close them forever? But if he doesn't, well Eiji doesn’t want to think about it.
Things were going well. Things were going outrageously well, and Lena didn’t know what to do about it. Sometimes, she didn’t even think about it, just kind of did it. As much as she wanted to overthink her way out of everything, it just didn’t happen, because Kara was easy, and Lena felt good, for the first time in such a long time. It was like waking up and realizing she hadn’t been aware of so many things.
Most importantly, Lena was finding that she just fit well with Kara Danvers. She fit well enough to be comfortable, and she wasn’t sure that she’d ever been comfortable with another person, and as foreign as it was, Lena wasn’t running away, as she thought she might. Weirdly enough, she stuck around.
“I’m sorry I’m late. I am so sorry. I got stuck on the phone. I’m so so sorry,” Lena chattered as she hurried to sit down at the table her girlfriend held.
“Hey, take a breath,” Kara chuckled and waited until Lena actually took a breath. She smiled and waited. “I got your text. Don’t worry. It’s okay.”
“I know, but I didn’t mean to be late.”
“I’d hope not. I’m a great lunch companion.”
“That’s true. My favorite.”
Kara beamed, and Lena loved that smile. She loved the feeling of making Kara smile the most because she never imagined she was someone who was funny enough to make anyone, let alone Kara smile.
“You look very pretty today,” Kara offered. “Even when you’re all frazzled.”
“I’m never frazzled. I am a Luthor. We do not get frazzled.”
“Tell that to the girl who just ran into Gio’s like her butt was on fire.”
“You look beautiful, by the way.”
“There’s my girl.”
Lunch dates were a fairly new invention to Lena who was used to dates late in the evening after work, usually with drinks, usually with sex after. That was the extent of the interactions she had in the dating world. But lunch dates were honestly the best. It meant Lena got out of the office, and it meant an hour of solid flirting and talking with Kara, uninterrupted by anything else. Sometimes, lunch dates were in one of their respective office, and sometimes it was in a new restaurant or an old favorite. Lena made sure to ask Kara at least once per week. She was doing her best to quantify being a girlfriend, and a great one.
Most of the time they were successful in being uninterrupted. It was easy to do when even Jess was fond of letting Lena have those lunches.
“Oh, I’m sorry, but I have to…” Kara trailed off as she looked at the number that appeared on her phone.
“I’ll allow it, as the better girlfriend.”
She rolled her eyes before picking up the call and excusing herself from the table to take it outside. Lena smiled into her glass and grabbed another slice of pizza from the shared tray between them. Even though she now had the moment to do it, Lena didn’t bother picking up her phone.
“Can you take care of the check with this?” she smiled politely at the waitress and handed over her card. “And if you could, two orders of tiramisu, one for the table, and one to go.”
“Of course, Ms. Luthor. How was everything?”
“Gio is going to be responsible for my wardrobe not fitting.”
“It’s worse working here. I have to work out twice as much.”
“I can’t imagine. My girlfriend has the metabolism of a greyhound. I’ve never been more jealous.”
“That’s a superpower I would want most of all. Eat all of the carbs and they didn’t count,” she chuckled and picked up a few plates and glasses. “I’ll be right back with that. And I’ll box up this up for you.”
“Thanks.”
It took a few more minutes, but Kara came back to the table, noticeably more sullen than when she walked outside.
“That face doesn’t look like someone who has tiramisu on the way and another to take home for their afternoon snack.”
“God, you’re the best,” the reporter sighed, though her mood didn’t improve. “That was a lead on my pollution story. I wasn’t sure I’d get the chance to interview a controller and purchaser for the state, but there was an opening through a friend of a friend. What?”
“Nothing, you’re just… I like when you talk about work. Usually it’s me that does that. It’s refreshing. Tell me more.”
The tiramisu was placed in front of them, and Kara picked up a fork immediately as she kept talking.
“I’ve been waiting for a break, or at least a chance to ask some real questions. I mean, I’ve practically memorized the budget for waste management and funding for companies and their waste. But I haven’t been able to get anyone to go on record.”
“But you’ve found someone,” Lena reminded her, taking a bite of the shared dessert. She watched Kara watch her lips and gulp before going for more.
“I, uh, yeah, I do. But I don’t have anyone to watch Katie. Alex is away on her anniversary trip, my mom is at a conference. And I can’t string together everyone else. It wouldn’t work.”
“Ow long do you have to go for?”
“Should just be like two days. I have to go the capitol. But I can fly back. You know. Like… fly, fly.”
Things had been easy since Mon-El left. There was a peace that existed there, and Lena really didn’t mind spending time with Katie. It was easier to do when she knew everything, and even when she heard Kara’s stories of home and her mother. But somehow Kara’s ex made the couple feel closer together. Weirdly enough, it made Lena feel more comfortable to know that Kara was all in.
“I’ll take her.”
“Um, what?” Kara furrowed and debated before giving Lena the last bite. She was gunning for the best girlfriend slot again and that was the most selfless thing she could think of.
“You didn’t ask me, but I can watch Katie.”
“Well, yeah, but we’re going slow. And I didn’t-- I mean I wouldn’t--”
“It’ll be a good way to get to know her and I’m a responsible adult individual who can do that.”
Across the table, Kara looked at her girlfriend and debated. Her daughter was a lot, and was even more for someone who didn’t have much experience. But Lena knew everything already and she was a capable adult individual.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes. I mean it. I am going to have to get good at kids… or at least one kid, and it’s this kid. So I should try. I mean, she’s indestructible, so who better to practice on.”
“That’s almost a good point,” Kara nodded and chuckled at Lena’s pragmatic explanation. “But are you sure you want to?”
To her credit, Lena thought about it again, debating over her idea. And when she looked at Kara, she felt her heart grow and swell and her chest grew warm. It was a feeling she adored having, but she was afraid of getting used to it. If she fell in love with Kara, and if she couldn’t do the kid thing, then it would hurt. Better to find out sooner, rather than later.
Plus, she was trying to be the best girlfriend, and Kara had given her the last bit of tiramisu.
“I want to. I want you to be able to go do  your work stuff and not worry. You should be able to count on me.”
“I do.”
“Okay. Then it’s decided. I will be an expert babysitter and you will conquer the world.”
“You’re amazing, did you know that?”
“I did actually.”
Kara smiled and let her girlfriend have it. Lena might not have known it, though Kara suspected she did, since her brain was always thinking things over-- but it was a big deal, and they knew what it meant.
“So long as you knew,” Kara smiled.
XXXXXXXXXX
Lena didn’t do anything without careful planning and extreme research. Babysitting was no different. For a few hours, she shirked work and looked up topical subjects to discuss with a five year old. She looked up all kinds of things, reading parenting blogs about how to handle things like tantrums and what foods were healthiest. Lena even learned basic life-saving techniques like the Heimlich and refreshed her CPR skills as best she could from a webpage. She had a wonderful pep talk and extensive list of instructions from her girlfriend.
She was ready. Or as ready as anyone could hope to be.
Somehow, in the grand scheme of things, Lena found herself standing outside of an elementary school, waiting for a child to appear.
“Lena! I’m so ‘cited to see you!” Katie hopped down the steps and skipped toward her through the crowd of people.
“Hey! I’m excited to see you too.”
“Do you want to help me with my homework but can we play first?”
There was a lot of energy happening, but Lena smiled because Katie held her hand and persisted to tell her about her day at school. She truly was like her mother in so many ways.
“We can definitely play first. I really want to go on the swings,” Lena decided. “And I was thinking maybe cheeseburgers for dinner?”
“Oh, I love cheeseburgers!”
“Me too!”
The park was fairly busy with the bustle of the afternoon crowd, but still, they tossed the backpack in the car and took to the park joyfully. Lena came prepared, exchanging her heels for sneakers and work out clothes. The thing she kept reading was that the best practice with children was to get on their level and take part in their activities. That meant running around, and as much as she kind of dreaded pretending to have fun, Lena allowed herself the time to enjoy it.
They stopped at the best burger place in the city and ordered their food when Kara called to check on them and say goodnight. Lena found it comical how big her phone was in comparison to Katie’s tiny hand.
“How’s the investigating going, darling?” Lena smiled into her phone while Katie asked for help with her ketchup packet.
“So far so good,” Kara breathed, somewhat relieved on the other side of the line. “You two seem to be having a good time.”
“I don’t want to jinx it, but we are. We’re going to head back home and do homework, bath, and bed. Easy night.”
“And I am across the country while you’re in my bed. It’s a travesty.”
“I agree.”
There was a tiny blush as Lena hurried to eat a fry and shut up before she said something stupid in front of a kid.
“Thank you for doing this. I mean it. It means so much to me, and--”
“Just admit I’m the best girlfriend.”
“I admit it. I’ll sing it from the rooftops.”
“Don’t worry about us here. Just go do what you gotta do, and we’ll see you on Sunday evening.”
“It’s a date. Have a good night. I’ll try to call in the morning.”
“Bye Mommy!” Katie sang towards the phone.
“Bye, Kara,” Lena offered with just as much joy.
“Bye ladies. Have fun!”
With the phone hung up, and the two left at their small table, Lena looked at Katie who just looked back at her before taking a big bite of her burger.
“Is this what it’s always like?” Lena asked.
“Yeah except we don’t always eat burgers sometimes Mom makes me eat other foods.”
The CEO just smiled and ate another fry.
XXXXXXXXXX
Maybe she was just overprepared or overconfident, but Lena found that following her schedule was a perfect way to pass the time with a kid. As she promised Kara, they worked on some homework and got a bath and shower respectively. Lena was only nervous half of the time of doing something wrong, and that was a win and a half for her.
“And they lived happily ever after,” Lena finished reading the story and closed the book, satisfied by the book well enough.
Part of what made her nervous about kids was that she honestly had no interest in how unintelligent they were. They just weren’t fully formed yet and found burps amusing and watched such droll and dull shows and read such easy books, and she couldn’t fake interest well at all. She’d been pleasantly surprised by how unannoyed she found herself with all of Katie’s childish things.
“We can read another,” Katie offered, trying to get out of bed to find another book.
“I think three was more than enough,” Lena shook her head, amused by the treachery that was attempted. “You should sleep now so I can work on my homework.”
“Do you need some help? I’m good at homework, you saw mine. It was so good.”
“Mine’s very boring. You wouldn’t like it,” she promised, pulling the blankets up. “But thank you for offering.”
“Is Mommy going to be home soon?”
Her eyes were like Kara’s and her chin tilted in the same way. It was amazing to see in person, and genetics, though a simple enough concept, was magnificent.
“She will be home in a couple of days. But for now, I’m going to stay here. I’ll sleep in your mom’s room.”
“Like when you stay over sometimes.”
“Yes, right, exactly,” Lena blushed slightly.
“Where do you live?”
“Oh, Well, I live downtown. My house is high up in a tall building
“Can I see it?”
“There aren’t any toys or fun things for kids to do, you wouldn’t like it.”
“But you live there and you’ve seen where I live.”
That was fair Lena realized before being caught by the notion that a five year old was outsmarting her somewhat in the logic department.
“Maybe we’ll go see it. But I can’t promise.”
“Sounds good.”
“Good night, Katie. Sleep well. Sweet dreams.”
“Night, Lena.”
Door finally closed behind her, Lena wasn’t aware of how exhausting Katie had been until she was left in the quiet. And she still had the kitchen to clean up and her work to get done. She wanted to tell Kara that she was amazing for getting it all done and still working on her career. Instead of calling her though, Lena decided she was going to be someone Kara could count on more often.
XXXXXXXXXX
“Oh Christ!” Lena jolted awake when she saw two eyes staring back at her and felt a hand on her cheek. Her heart leaped and thumped until she realized where she was and who was touching her.
Katie just giggled and climbed into the bed completely.
“Good morning. I woke up and went potty and now I’m very hungry. Like I could eat a stack of pancakes.”
“Let me catch my breath… for a minute…”
“You’re scared when you waked up.”
“I don’t have kids at my house waking me up usually. I was just a little frightened.”
Lena turned her head and looked at the little girl who made herself comfortable in the big bed, very close to her. Before she could say something, she felt her phone vibrating and reached for it quickly.
Katie bounced a little and urged Lena to help with breakfast while the CEO tried to hear what was happening on the other end of the line.
“Why don’t you go set the table for breakfast,” Lena tried, covering her phone while her assistant kept telling her about what happened with some deal.
An instant later, little feet made their way down the hall and Lena was able to focus on the task at hand. In a matter of five minutes, she realized that she would have to go into the office to handle it, and now she was unsure of if babysitting was a good idea.
But it was too late to second guess it.
“George, hey, I’m so sorry to call-- yes,” Lena smiled as she made her way down the hall. “Could you pick me up at Kara’s…” Katie was already watching cartoons. “And stop and pick up a booster seat.”
XXXXXXXXXX
“Wow… your office is very cool and awesome,” Katie observed as she sat behind the big desk, eyes wide and enjoying the seat. “I like the windows.”
“Thanks. It’s alright, I guess,” Lena smiled to herself as she looked around her office.
“That’s my mom.”
Katie pointed at the picture frame that had the pair at a gala month ago. Kara had her arm around Lena’s waist and was smiling happily. Lena remembered when they got a little tipsy and stumbled back to her place and the dresses didn’t survive the needy hands and eagerness both exhibited. It was a good memory, and it took that for Lena to realize what useful things photographs were.
“It is. We went to a party together.”
“Why do you have it on your desk?”
“Because I like to look at it and feel happy. Your mom makes me feel happy when I’m kind of bored or stressed. She makes me smile.”
Katie thought about it and nodded, furrowing at the picture.
“Yeah, she’s good at making people smile.”
Her legs kicked and couldn’t reach the floor. Lena took a picture and sent it to Kara so she could see her daughter as CEO-in-training. And then Lena got to the task of running her company while entertaining a child. It was an extra level of difficulty she hadn’t anticipated, but Katie was well behaved, coloring a little and then watching a movie on the couch in the corner while Jess plied her with popcorn and juice. Every step of the way, she asked Lena what she was doing, and even though she didn’t understand anything at first, she listened intently and decided that Lena’s job really was boring.
Lena had to agree.
“So the other people didn’t like your… stipala-- stiplat-- what was it?”
“Stipulations,” Lena explained again with a smile. “Right. So now I have to give them more money to accept those and my board doesn’t want to.”
“You have lots of money?”
“Yes. But do you want to know a secret?” Katie nodded eagerly as she leaned against the desk. “When you have a lot of money, you don’t tell people that you do.”
“Why?”
“It’s kind of boring to talk about.”
“What does this company do?”
“They kind of make new inventions.”
“That’s pretty cool.”
Lena type away for a second and waited for another call from her board. She knew the telltale signs of someone who was sick of being stuck in the office, as she’d once been that little girl dragged along when promised something else. She was really mucking up the whole babysitting thing, and she did, desperately, wanted Katie to like her.
“I don’t think there’s much more I can do right now, they just need my signature,” Lena sat back. “Want to do a little experiment? I can show you what this new company does with magnets and electricity.”
“An experiment?” Katie asked, perking up slightly.
Press that button,” Lena pointed toward her phone. “And you can ask Jess for our supplies.”
Lena wasn’t sure she’d ever seen such excitement, and she was certain she’d never connected with a kid like she did right there with Katie, her entire life coming full circle. Katie slid into her lap and Lena thought she might have understood a little better.
 November 7 - 4 years after
 It’s early morning when he arrives in Velaris. He’s exhausted, having spent a long day in the Illyrian mountains after flying back from Gilameyva. It is miserable to be back in the mountains, and more miserable still to arrive in Velaris and learn that it’s not any better.
       If anything, it’s worse. Because he had expected to be happier here than in Illyria—who wouldn’t? The two barely belong in the same court, with one so picturesque and overflowing with joy and the other  a messy series of war camps, still bleeding out from the hasty stitches patched upon it after the rebellions—and he isn’t. He can’t be happy anywhere, now.
       “You’re back.”
       Cassian turns to see the surprised pleasure in Mor’s voice echoed on her face. He gives her an easy grin. “Miss me?”
       She slugs his arm lightly as she grins back. “Not particularly.” Her tone changes, more gentle. “How were they?”
       He stifles a sigh. He worries he might break down sobbing if he lets it out. “They’re… amazing.”
       “Good,” she says, rubbing her hand on his shoulder. “That’s good.”
       Cassian sits himself down in one of  the large armchairs, draping his wings over the back. “Yeah,” he says. “It’s good.”
       She curls up on one of the couches beside him. “You miss them.”
       It’s not a question, so he doesn’t answer. Just nods his head a little.
       He’s heard before, that people who don’t have children simply can’t understand. He has, privately, rolled his eyes. For he has loved before, has he not? Rhys and Az and then Mor and even Amren, and the whole Illyria and the Night Court and Feyre and then for those few months with her in the mountains, he had loved Nesta.
       This is not the same.
       He doesn’t miss them. That’s not nearly enough. But he’s never been one for words, so the slight nod is all he can give.
       “Did you ask her to bring them for Solstice?”
       He frowns slightly; he doesn’t like how she phrases it. It isn’t consciously done, he knows. Mor has no malicious intent. But he doesn’t like the implication that she is bringing them for them, the children, to be here, and not them, a family unit that is he and Nesta and the triplets, to be together.
       But he supposes she is right. If Nesta comes, it won’t be for her sake. Not for a them.
       “I did. She’ll think about it.”
       Mor’s better at hiding her frown than he is, but he can still see it in her eyes.
       “It’s her right to say no,” he defends. Which he doesn’t like. He doesn’t like it because it’s true and it might happen and also because he doesn’t want to have to defend Nesta to Mor or Rhys or Amren, or even Az sometimes. At least Feyre and Elain love her too, and they have some semblance of camaraderie with him in that.
       He doesn’t like it rather selfishly: he wants to defend his right to have his family for Solstice, but because his other family doesn’t see Nesta as part of them, he has to defend her.
       Cassian wonders, briefly, if this is how Feyre ever felt. Trapped between two realms, two families. Or maybe even Rhys.
       “I didn’t mean it wasn’t,” she says carefully. “Just… you’re their father too.”
       “It’s different.” He looks at his hands, callused and scarred. “Even if I had been with them since they were born… I still wouldn’t be with them all the time.”
       “You’re keeping them safe,” she says. “You’re keeping the world safe for them. That’s important too.”
           Sugar Valley is safe, he thinks, but he keeps it to himself. No one will mind, of course. They will be sympathetic. They’ll think he’s bitter, upset, think they can help him get past his guilt and move on.
       But he doesn’t think it ever will. And the thought of staying anonymous in a sleepy town across the sea winks at him from the dying starlight as the sun rises over the Sidra.
 November 21 - year after
 The cheery pastels of the clinic were not helping to improve Nesta’s mood. Nor were the mother and child, hand in hand, waiting across from her.
       The child blinked up at her from long lashes, blushing slightly when she made eye contact. She looked away in alarm as he gave her a pleased grin.
       There should be a different room for children, she thought. When people were coming for… this.
       It wasn’t that she felt guilty. She just didn’t want to think about it.
       So she counted the sugarberries painted on the walls, and before long, Dadashov called her name.
       “Good morning, Miss Archeron,” she said smoothly. “Can I offer you some tea?”
       “No. Thank you.” How could she eat anything now? With every movement of her stomach feeling like something entirely different than butterflies.
       “All right, then,” she said. “If you’d lie down, please...”
       Nesta did, fidgeting with her skirts.
       “How does the… procedure… how do you do it?”
       “Well,” Dadashov said, hooking some wired contraption around her ears, “The procedure itself is only a tonic. A bit sour. You’ll stay here for a few hours, until the worst of the cramps have past, so I can keep an eye on you, and you’ll be home by afternoon. Rest for the next day or so. Until you feel yourself again. Before that,” Dadashov continued, either completely oblivious to or respectfully ignoring Nesta’s panic at feeling herself again, “I’ll need to do a quick check to make sure everything is in order.”
       “Everything in order? With me, or…?”
       “Certain conditions in the uterus rendering this particular tonic unusable or harmful to your body are rare but not unheard of. And we’ll need to make sure the fetus is in its correct position.”
       “Where else would it be?” she wondered.
       “Let’s not worry about that now,” she said gently. “I’m going to listen in, all right? I have this sheet… if you could raise your skirts, please… thank you. This won’t hurt a bit; it’s only rather cold.”
       Nesta sucked in a breath as Dadashov placed the circle her wires are connected to on her lower stomach. Cold was an understatement.
       Dadashov was silent for a few moments as she listened to… Nesta wasn’t sure.
       “Hm,” she said quietly.
       “Everything all right?” she asked, feeling stupid.
       “Well,” she said, taking off her contraption and sitting up. “The heartbeat is irregular.”
       “Irregular?”
       “Erratic. Wild. No discernible rhythm at all, actually.”
       Nesta’s own heartbeat sped up, though she wasn’t sure why. What did it matter if the heartbeat wasn’t normal? It wouldn’t be beating by sundown, anyway. “What does that mean?”
       “A number of things. What I’m most concerned about right now is the natural state of your uterus. It could mean it’s shaped improperly or perhaps a growth pressing up against the fetus, preventing it from growing properly and affecting its heart rate. No cause for concern,” she said, giving Nesta a reassuring smile. “I’m calm because you are clearly healthy and if anything is amiss, I am here and we will take care of it. How is your cycle normally?”
       “Um,” Nesta said. “Normal. It’s normal, I think.”
       “Twice a year? About a week?”
       “So far,” she said.
       Dadashov smiled again, her light blue eyes twinkling. “Of course. My apologies. Until your transition, did you experience your cycle once a month?”
       She said everything so calmly, so smoothly. Transition. Like some kind of choice. Or moving up in the world. “Yes. Well. Not every month. Sometimes… but that’s normal. Sometimes human girls miss a month.” A horrible thought struck Nesta. “Is it… could it be something I did? With… a contra—”
       “Neither sex nor contraceptives could have a misshaping effect on your body, Miss Archeron,” she said firmly. “This is no one’s fault. I’m going to do a test. I’m going to be looking inside your body.”
       “Inside my body?”
       “Perhaps you’d like to close your eyes,” she said kindly. “It’s not horribly invasive, but it will feel odd. No, no, you don’t have to move. It’s a bit of magic. I put it on top of your lower abdomen.”
       On top of her… to look inside her body… “Are you going to see...” Nesta trailed off.
       “Perhaps you’d like to close your eyes,” she repeated.
       Nesta did. Dadashov moved quickly, quietly, which made it rather eerie when something suddenly settled atop her. A bit of pressure, squeezing her—odd, not painful, just like she said.
       “Ah,” Dadashov breathed out.
       What was that Nesta could hear? Was it… awe?
       “What is it?”
       Dadashov was silent for a beat. “Miss Archeron, there is nothing wrong with your body. The heartbeat was irregular because I was hearing more than one.”
       “You mean mine?”
       “No,” she said, patient. “Not yours.”
       Her heart gave a lurch. “You mean… twins?”
       “No,” Dadashov said, softer still. “I mean triplets.”
       Triplets.
       Triplets. Inside of her. Right now.
       Nesta could feel her mind shut down. “You mean three of them?” she blurted out, in the most idiotic way she possibly could, her eyes flying open.
       “I do.”
       Nesta closed her eyes again.
       “Would you like to see?” she offered quietly.
       Nesta put her hands right over where… where they were supposed to be. She sat up abruptly.
       “No,” she said. “I need to… think.”
---
 November 7 - 4 years after
 He can’t concentrate during the briefing. After being with them for so long… and then coming back here… it’s too much. He’s angry at himself; what if he misspeaks? What if he misses something? This is dangerous.
       But he can’t help it. His thoughts are elsewhere.
       Nothing had taken away from his love and devotion to this court, to his people, his legions, before. Not even Nesta.
       That’s why she had left. He never could find the balance.
       Not like Rhys and Feyre, seated next to each other, the perfect mix of professional and adoring. Strategic discussions and little touches here and there: her hair, his thigh.
       Is he even a good commander if he can’t concentrate?
       They can sense it, all of them. It’s an odd display of cautionary tact that comes up now, whenever Nesta and the children are involved.
       So Cassian’s not surprised when Rhys corners him after.
       “I’m out of practice,” he says, jerking his head in the direction of the sparring ring. “Join me?”
       So he does.
       He’s better than Rhys at hand-to-hand, and it does force him to concentrate on something else, which is… nice.
       When they’re done, half an hour later, Rhys says, “How did it go?”
       Cassian looses a breath slowly as he swirls around the water in the cup Rhys hands him. “So well,” he says, all the gratitude in the world in his voice.
       “That’s good,” he says, echoing Mor’s sentiments from earlier.
       “I need them.” He’s never said it aloud before.
       “I know.”
       “All of them. Nesta too.”
       “I know,” Rhys repeats. “That’s why I want them here.”
       Cassian snorts. “You want Nesta here?”
       “I want you here. Happy. And Feyre. Elain. She’s a part of that. And I’m certainly not suggesting we move the children back and forth.”
       Cassian pauses. “I don’t know if… Nesta… could be happy here.”
       Rhys is quiet for a minute, drinking his water. “I don’t know her very well,” he says finally, “but I think anyone could be happy here. Given the correct circumstances.” He hesitates. “Have you thought about… getting an apartment?”
       Cassian clenches his jaw.
       “You said you want her to come for Solstice. I doubt she’ll want to stay here. Or the townhouse. Or the House of Wind. Maybe you should have a place that’s just for you.”
       He does like that—that Rhys says you as if there is a them. Perhaps he understands, in a way Mor does not.
       “I wish they got along,” he says aloud.
       “Who?”
       “Nesta and Mor.”
       Rhys laughs. “Maybe Emerie can bond them.”
       He doubts it. The idea of Nesta and Mor being friends is too ludicrous to even entertain. Neither of them are particularly keen on forgiveness, and they have plenty of reasons to loathe each other. Most of which he doesn’t understand.
       “I think she’ll come,” he says.
       “You do?” Rhys wouldn’t give him false hope. And he genuinely doesn’t know the answer.
       “I do,” he says. “Mostly because Feyre thinks she will, too,” he admits. “But also… I don’t know her well, but I do know enough. I know she’s scared to fail her children.”
       It’s a chilling line, miserable to hear. Cassian doesn’t want Nesta to come because she’s scared of what will happen if she doesn’t; he wants her to want to come.
       “There’s a place I think you’ll like,” Rhys continues, either unaware of Cassian’s reaction or respectfully ignoring it. “Property just went up for sale. Four bedrooms. Nice yard. Good location.” Rhys gives him the address.
       “I’ll look at it,” he says.  Four bedrooms, he thinks.
 December 19 - Year of
 Despite what Nesta told Emerie before her dinner with Cassian, the past three weeks had not been fake cordial. They hadn’t even been real cordial.
       They had been… friendly.
       They had breakfast together, when he was there. And dinner, too. He always had dinner ready for her when she came home.
       (That was something alarming: she began to think of coming back to Cassian’s house as coming home.)
       He brought her more books to read. He didn’t speak of his brothers or her sisters. Neither did she. They talked about food. About the going-ons in the neighboring camps. About themselves.
       He still teased her, but when she snapped at him for it, she wasn’t really angry.
       She had almost forgotten they were supposed to be treading on eggshells until he reminded her.
       He said, “I need to go back to Velaris. For Solstice.”
       Her eyes flashed, but she was still staring at her book, so perhaps he didn’t see. “Oh, when is that?” she asked, in a would-be casual tone. She knew full well, and he knew she did, too.
       “Two days.”
       “Oh.”
       Perhaps the both of them were thinking… no, they were both      definitely     thinking of their last Solstice together. If they could call it that.
       Then it was Cassian’s turn to pretend. “Do you want to come along?”
       Nesta put down her book and leaned back against the couch. “No,” she said, looking up at the ceiling and locking her fingers behind her head. “I think I’ll stay here.”
       “All right,” he said evenly. He sat down beside her—a little closer than he had ever done before. “Well, I leave you then with this… to keep you company.”
       Nesta looked down at his outstretched hand.
       The chocolate bar. The one she still hadn’t touched.
       A wry sort of chuckle escaped her as she rolled her eyes at him. “Thanks,” she said as she took it from him, her fingers jolting as they brushed his.
       He grinned wickedly. “Anytime.”
       She dropped her gaze quickly. “You’re bothering me.” She took her book back.
       He laughed. “I’ll see you in a few days, Nes.”
       “Don’t call me that,” she grumbled.
       But again, it was only halfhearted.
 November 21 - 1 year after
 What Nesta wanted when she stumbled out of the clinic was somewhere quiet, alone, to gather her thoughts. Or scream.
       Instead she got that deer-satyr from Sugar Books, holding up a cup of something steaming.
       “Hey,” he said pleasantly. “I was just coming over to bring you this.”
       “Oh, for the love of all that is holy,” she said under her breath. Louder, to him, she said, “I really can’t right now.”
       “Just a drink,” he said, holding it out to her. “Do you like chocolate?”
       She bit her lip. She did like chocolate. She did not like feeling like she owed males something.
       “Just take it,” he encouraged. “And come on. I can show you some place nice to sit.”
       It wasn’t that she wanted to go with him. It’s that she had nowhere else.
       “I don’t know what to do,” she said, not realizing she had spoken aloud until he answered.
       “About what?”
       “I don’t...” she mumbled to herself. “I don’t think… I can’t...”
       “Woah, Nesta. Here. Sit down. Here, drink some of this.”
       It wasn’t the same. One was quiet, a bad memory, hazy. Something she could convince herself didn’t happen.
       But three? Three was so… real. Three different beings. Three different people! How could there be three people inside of her, growing and feeding off of her? All together? How small must they be, for them all to fit?
       And they all had heartbeats. Three tiny hearts, beating out of sync with each other deep inside her. Each of them with its own rhythm, its own strong pulse.
       In another life, another world, another body, three sisters had once shared a bed. What would have happened if they had shared time in the womb? All three of them, together?
       Sisters deserved beds of their own, that much she knew for sure.
       Three was too much. Too much to think about, and yet too much to have.
           Bad things come in threes. Didn’t they say that? People said that, she was sure of it.
       Maybe, she thought wildly, she could keep one. Just one. And the others… somehow…
       No. That was crazy. She couldn’t do that. Could she?
       And how would she choose?
       “I can’t do this,” she said again.
       “Nesta, please, drink this.” Zayn wrapped her fingers around the cup. “Go on, drink.”
       As the hot, berry-chocolate drink slipped down her throat, she realized three other people were going to have it, too.
       “I—I,” Nesta stammered.
       “What is it?” He sounded too eager. Was that concern?
       “I… I have to… get a house.”
---
 November 8 - 4 years after
 Rhys was right. He does like the house.
       It’s a great location. Comfortable walk from the bank of the Sidra he always sees families play. Close enough to the Rainbow that they can walk there, too. A bakery on the corner, a butcher’s just beyond, and a market a block down. And a nursery, too, just three streets away.
       It’s spacious. Big windows and less doors than there are rooms. There’s a proper dining area—Nesta’s house doesn’t really have one, just the table in the kitchen.
       Of the bedrooms, two are a bit smaller than the third, so that, he supposes, is where the children can stay while they all sleep in the same room. A nice tub in that bathroom, which is good, they’re still small enough that they bathe together…
       And he’s just pushed open the door to the master when he hears Amren say from behind him, “In the market for a family home?”
       He turns. “Are you? I thought Varian was looking romanced last I saw him. That explains it.”
       She rolls her eyes where she once might have bared her teeth. “Close to a nursery,” she says, pushing past him to stand in the room. “And you can see all the way to the park from here,” she adds,  peering through the window. “Good for if you’re staying in bed.”
       Now Cassian rolls his eyes, if only to hide the clench in his jaw.
       “Is she coming for Solstice, then?”
       Amren says it the same way she says everything: cool, detached, unbothered. But Cassian knows. “She hasn’t given me an answer yet.”
       Amren pretends to take interest in the sample decorative pillows. “What do you think she’ll say?”
       “I don’t know. Yes, I hope.”
       She puts down the pillow. “You’re too hopeful. It doesn’t help you think.”
       “You’ve not asked about her at all,” he says, sitting down on the bed.
       “I don’t think there’s anything I want to know.” She doesn’t say it with malice.
       “You don’t care?”
       “She’s alive. She’s fine.”
       “We thought she was dead.”
       “We were wrong.” She pauses. “If you had known… where she was… would you have gone?”
       “Of course,” he says immediately.
       “Why did you not go when you knew she was in Montesere?”
       He flinches. Do you even care about her? is what she’s asking. Is it only for the children?
       Every regret he has has something to do with her.
       “Why didn’t you go?”
       “I do not go now,” she says simply. “I was angry when she left. When we thought she was dead and we looked for her I was angry. And I’m angry now.”
       “She’s not the only one to blame.”
       Amren shrugs. “I can be angry at more than one person. Don’t sit on the bed like that.”
       “Like what?”
       “Longing. Yearning. Pathetic.”
       “I’m not yearning.”
       “You are. It doesn’t flatter you. Nesta will come.”
       “How do you know that?” She sounds so certain, so matter-of-fact and cavalier.
       She gestures to him. “It’s not one-sided.”
       Cassian moves his eyes out towards the window, feeling very out his element. “She has a life of her own.”
       “I know about her bookstore. That doesn’t matter.”
       “It matters.”
       She waves a hand. “Not in the grand scheme of things. Nesta Archeron is very much herself. She doesn’t change. She decides on things before she knows she wants them. And she doesn’t change her mind.”
       Amren leaves him alone with his thoughts. She’s simplifying things, he knows, but he desperately hopes the core of it is right.
       She had asked him why he didn’t go. He waits in masochistic anticipation for the day Nesta asks him that as well. Why he had not followed up on her letters, vague and frustrating as they were.
       There’s nothing he can really do about it now. Except maybe make an offer on the house.
The Cutest Maid for Me
After suffering a humiliating fishing defeat, Estelle needed some cheering up. And Joshua only knew one way he could do that, no matter that it was a little embarrassing...
Fandom: Trails in the Sky/Sora no Kiseki Characters/Pairing: Estelle Bright/Joshua Bright Rating: G Mirror Link: AO3 Notes: Written for @taco-night-frenzy who I love dearly. It was her birthday yesterday! So here’s a gift of Trails! (Estelle is very fun).
The road to mastery was never easy. It was full of hardship, doubts and sometimes even pain. But Estelle had known her share of all of that – and she would achieve all she could despite whatever setbacks would come her way.
She threw out her fishing line with an expert flick, grinning in satisfaction when the hook made a soft plunk! as it bobbed onto the lake’s surface. “Ha! Beat that, Lloyd!”
The man standing next to Estelle on the dock, an expert fisherman that she had run into more times than she could count, rubbed his chin. His bushy moustache caught the sun's rays, burnishing it with a deep azure. “Hmm…impressive. You have a good wrist there. Nice arc on the line, and the bait is reaching deep enough into the water but not too much.”
“Heh,” Estelle huffed out with a smirk, one hand on her hip as she held the fishing pole in the other. She was already a master after all. The Fisherman’s Guild had recognized her talents long ago! But it seemed that one of their members wanted to put her to the test still.
Valleria Lake was no stranger to Estelle or to Lloyd. It was here where they had met each other long ago, back when Estelle had been a much lower-rank Bracer, and when Lloyd was just another regular fisherman. The Kingfisher Inn had been on the way for her and Joshua’s travels, and they had decided to rent out a room there, happy with some of the memories it brought them, as well as their much needed rest from so much traveling across Zemuria.
It seemed to be fate that she and Lloyd would meet again here at this very same place.
“Flattery isn’t going to save you.” With a turn to the fisherman, Estelle Bright, B rank Bracer and Legendary Angler, tried to give the man some hope. “But it has been a while since I seriously fished. Currently out doing my Bracer duty and all. Takes up my time a lot.”
Lloyd nodded, taking in her words with the utmost solemnity. “I apologize for interrupting you with this Angler’s Duel. It brings me back to when you were only a rookie… To see how far you’ve come!”
Estelle was not only the best at being a Bracer and being a fisher, but also at humbleness. She was humble as hell! Estelle started to laugh good-naturedly, to show off more of that humble nature of hers! “I’ve grown up! And I’ve learned plenty along the way!”
The last time she and Lloyd had dueled, she had been more hesitant, a bit greener around the gills as it were. (That was a fishing pun! She knew these things now because she was a fisher). But after all her experiences and finally finding Joshua, Estelle was confident, and of course much stronger. As proof, she was already feeling a nibble on her line! But she restrained from going ahead and reeling it in just yet. With that same smirk, she let the catch slip away, the ripples of its escape dancing across the water’s surface.
Lloyd was understandably confused. “Why didn’t you go and catch it? You had it!”
“It was just a small-fry. I’m here to get bigger game.” Estelle turned back to Lloyd with her most humble grin. “And I wanted to give you a head-start! Now you should show me what you’ve learned over this last year!”
Estelle may have also felt a bit competitive lately. Joshua would rarely fish with her as it was, even now! Maybe Lloyd would give her a challenge that she’d been lacking!
On their last duel, Lloyd had been fired up as they competed, but he had also floundered (another pun!), missing multiple catches in a row, allowing Estelle to claim sweet victory. But even if he had improved, she knew she could be better.
Lloyd stared hard at the lake, still rubbing his chin, his moustache absolutely brimming with energy. It was amazing how little the fisherman had changed at all for the past year. He even wore the exact same clothes! She recognized that green jacket, his leather belt, those brown pants…were those even the same shoes?
“Fair warning, Estelle. While you’ve been busy…I’ve been honing my own skills!” And there it was, that fiery look in the man’s eyes, that drive to fish to the max! At first, Estelle thought these fisher guys were a little weird, but she understood completely now.
“Then show me what you got!” she goaded on with a laugh. No matter that she let her line sink a bit into the water, that her form was more relaxed. She had this!
“Gladly!” That was when Lloyd went to his side of the pier, walked over to the fishing rack with multiple rods placed alongside each other…
…and pulled out two of them. Both of them crafted to perfection, their wood carefully polished, and their lures as bright as any scrumptious bait that the fish would be hungering for.
“My double fishing technique is going to leave you out to dry!” Lloyd stated proudly. “You’ll have to catch up to me now!”
Estelle blinked, her humble grin completely wiped from her face. “Wait…wait, two? You can have two? Isn’t that against the rules?” The Fisherman’s Guild had rules, didn’t it?
“This is an advanced technique proposed by Mister Fisher himself!” Lloyd waggled his thick mustache in pride, then whipped out both rods towards the giant lake. “Hiyaaaa!”
Estelle had not been prepared for this at all. She floundered (no!!) with her own fishing pole, just able to grab at it before it fell into the water. She then turned to Lloyd with a grimace. “I’ve been away from the Guild for over a year! I didn’t get any news about using double fishing rods!” Was Lloyd trying to trick her? It would make sense, as it would be the only way to beat her…
Lloyd faced the lake with that same fire in his eyes, one fishing rod in each hand. Already the lines were pulling on both! So fast!
“Better not just stand there gawking now!” Lloyd said. “Or I’ll be winning this duel in style!”
“How can you fish with two fishing rods!? How are you even going to reel them in? It makes no sense!” It would be like if Estelle used two staffs instead of one! Their weight would hinder her and would make it harder to do her moves! Sure, Joshua used two swords to fight but swords were different and he was always weird about stuff like that anyway…
Lloyd though, seemed to have no trouble with his catch. With another triumphant shout, he stepped back on the pier, and pulled on both rods with a flourish. The water, from where the lures were descended into, burst upwards in a glorious array of colors. The sun caught the droplets, fell onto Lloyd’s hair and moustache, all as the fishing lines curled around him, as if they were a part of him...
From both hooks hung two wiggling basses. Lloyd stood tall. “Now see if you can beat that! I gave it my all, and now got my all twice-over!”
Estelle blinked. “Muh? But those are just- argh! Never mind! You’re on, buster!” She took her fishing rod in both hands, gripping it as she would with her staff, and readied herself for her next move.
She wasn’t going to lose!
It was only an hour later before the door to Joshua’s and Estelle’s room in the Kingfisher Inn opened so forlornly that Joshua had barely noticed it at first. Except well, that wasn’t entirely true. Trained to be a hyperaware killing machine, he noticed it right away actually. It was just…it had opened so pathetically he didn’t even feel he had to be on his guard.
And going by the soft footsteps, Joshua had already known who it was.
“Is everything alright, Estelle?” he asked. Seated at a small table next to the window, he closed the book he had been reading. The fascinating history between the exotic fruit traders of the Calvard Republic and the Erbonian Empire would have to wait. “I was getting worried.”
Estelle’s position was so slouched, she might as well have been dragging her head across the floor. As it was though, it was mostly her twin ponytails, probably catching every piece of dirt and lint on the way. “Joshua…”
He got up, now overly concerned. Eyes hard, he knelt before Estelle, grasping her shoulders. “Did you get hurt?” Was it the agents of Ouroboros? Or had Estelle found Renne but couldn’t get her back? “Tell me what happened.”
She collapsed to the floor, knees tucked underneath her. It seemed that all of her previous zest for life had completely left her. How could someone extinguish her light so easily? “…Joshua…”
He gripped her shoulders tighter. “Estelle…please tell me.”
She finally raised her eyes to him, on the verge of tears. “I…I lost!”
“Lost what? Did you…?” So she must have found Renne then. Estelle would feel so guilty at losing her already-
“The Angler’s Duel! I lost!” Estelle’s once broken voice was then tinged with disbelief, a pout in her tone that Joshua could recognize anywhere.
“…You lost a duel?” Joshua questioned, then sighed. The fire in his amber eyes cooled instantly. “Is this just about fishing?”
“It’s not just that!” Estelle than stood up, leaving his hold. “I didn’t just lose a fishing duel! I lost my reputation!” With a frustrated groan, she sat on the bed, muttering under her breath. “Stupid…two rods…not even fair…”
Joshua got up from the floor as well. At least it hadn’t been anything too serious. “You’ll get over it. Why don’t you have something to eat at least?”
“I’m not even hungry!” Estelle whined, obviously lying but Joshua would let her ride that anger out until her stomach started growling at any moment. “I just wanna sleep and forget it all…Leave me to wallow in my shame…” With another sigh, Estelle let herself fall backwards onto the bed to finally sleep away her defeat at the hands of Lloyd, already feeling drowsy while halfway to the pillow…
“Estelle, watch out!”
Bam!
“Owww!!” Estelle sat up instantly, clutching the back of her head in pain. The metal rim of the bed’s headboard had a nice big dent from where her skull had collided into it at full speed. “Why was that even there?!”
“We’ve been sleeping in this bed for the past few nights, you should already know by now…” Joshua sat next to her, massaging the back of her head with his hands. “There, there…”
“Waaa…what if my skull is broken?”
“It’s not broken.” Joshua gave her head a gentle pat. “You’ve got the thickest skull in all of Zemuria.”
“…You’re not that great at comforting, you know.”
“I know.”
As Joshua rubbed that forming bump on Estelle’s head (wouldn’t be the first time either), he could feel Estelle beginning to wind down from earlier. “Since when do you want to skip out on dinner? Come on, we can get you something from the downstairs kitchen.”
And for a moment, Estelle looked as if she would listen. It would be nice just to eat together, especially after all of their hard traveling throughout the continent, searching for any traces of Renne where they could. This familiar inn by Valleria Lake was supposed to be their moment of rest, and he was going to make sure Estelle got that.
She gazed up at him, that bump on her head almost like a halo with the way it framed her…It was really that big. Maybe Joshua needed to get Estelle to a doctor…
“Hey, Joshua…You know what would make me happy?” Estelle said, interrupting his thoughts. Her eyes were as bright as the sun, the same sun that had shone through his seemingly everlasting darkness.
He knew exactly what she was asking for then.
Joshua lowered his eyelids halfway, distant and empty of all meaning. His hands slid from her head, hanging now from his sides. “No.”
“Come onnn!” Estelle placed her fists underneath her chin, as excited as a kid who just caught a gigantic, wriggling, completely disgusting beetle in her bare hands. “It’ll be great!”
“I can’t keep doing this for you every time you get sad, Estelle.”
“But I’m injured! Look!” She ducked her head, showcasing more of that bump that poked through her hair. “Looook!!”
“I’m looking! Now please stop!” Joshua lost his cool demeanor. With Estelle, he could barely keep it up for very long. “…Do I really have to do this for you?”
“But you like it too, Joshua!”
He sighed in long-suffering defeat. Joshua knew when to pick his battles, and with Estelle, there was just no winning. Not when she looked at him like that. “Fine. Give me a minute then.”
“Yay!” Estelle reached out to hug him, her pain of past losses (and actual pain) already leaving her so quickly. “You’re the best!”
“I’m only wearing it for a little while! I don’t want anyone seeing it…” With that proclamation, Joshua went to the window and pulled the curtains closed. The sun outside was shut out, with no more view of the grand lake.
“You don’t need to be embarrassed, Joshua! It looks good on you!”
Joshua could control every action of his body – even down to the very core temperature. But not when it came to Estelle. He was weak to everything she threw at him; from puppy dog eyes to the multiple bugs she had literally thrown at his face. He could already feel his face burning a bright red. “Estelle, come on…”
She was grinning, already looking very excited, and he couldn’t let her down. Not after everything she did for him.
“…Don’t take pictures this time,” Joshua said before he went to an extra room in the back, quickly pulling out a dark garment from one of their packs. “I mean it.”
“Oh fiiine,” Estelle said, but she was still smiling just before he turned away to change.
She really had him wrapped around her finger, didn’t she?
Even though only a few minutes passed, Estelle easily got impatient. Even more so now with the throbbing on her head. That bump really hurt! These beds were clearly a safety hazard. The Kingfisher Inn needed to get their standards up for sure! But she would fulfill her Bracer duties later on. Right now, she only wanted one thing!
“Joshua!” Estelle yelled. She had gone to seat herself at the table, pushing whatever book was on there more to the side, more away from her. (She had looked through it earlier and saw no pictures, so it wasn’t that important anyway).
“Hold on!” She heard Joshua call from the back. “This isn’t the easiest thing to put on…”
“I can help!” she said ecstatically. “Want me to help?”
“No!”
“Aw…”
But Joshua didn’t keep her waiting long. Finally the door to the back room opened. Estelle was practically vibrating on her seat, her twin ponytails nearly perked up the same way animal ears tended to do…
“Uh, are…you sure you’re alright?” Joshua asked. He pressed down on the front of the maid’s dress, looking shy as he did so. The material was pitch black, decorated with white frills alongside its sleeves and the hem, which was outfitted with a white apron on the front. He looked exactly like how he did back at Grancel Castle when they had to be in disguise, only lacking the long-haired wig he had worn last time. But it didn’t detract from his presentation at all. “That bump on your head looks like it’s getting bigger.”
Estelle waved away any health concerns. “Psh, I’m fine! I’m better than ever!” She was too busy looking over at Joshua in his maid’s uniform, complete with the white cap. “I just need my maid to serve me my food!”
Joshua closed his eyes, and in his arms brought up a picnic basket that had seemingly appeared out of nowhere. “Of course…Lady Estelle…”
“Hehe, yeah!” She pumped her fist in the air. This was great!
“But seriously, I’m not even sure how you were able to keep these maid outfits at all.” He looked down again at what he wore, down to the prim stockings and shining shoes with the heels just a tad too high for him. “These are supposed to only belong to Grancel Castle.”
“It’s a secret technique!” Estelle said with a wink, careful to not let slip the fact that the simple act of asking the other maids for spare clothes had been the solution. But she was too busy staring hard at pretty Joshua and the food he carried just for her! When he dared to walk closer to her, she then tugged on the hem Joshua’s dress, pulling him nearer. “C’mere!”
“Estelle, stop! I’m gonna trip!” Joshua complained, still struggling with the stockings he had put on. But despite being expertly trained ever since at a young age, he apparently could not sidestep quick enough to avoid landing right in Estelle’s lap, picnic basket bouncing over his knees.
“Hehe, got you just where I want ya!” she said gleefully. “Remember to feed me!”
“Well, can you at least hold still?” Despite his complaints, his voice had been soft, and his actions even more demure. He reached into the picnic basket he still held onto…and pulled out a big steak and cheese sandwich that honestly didn’t look to be fit for human consumption.
“You even got me my favorite!” Estelle purred, squeezing Joshua to her chest. “Thank you, thank you!”
“It’s kinda hard to feed you when you’re holding onto me tight…” Joshua was able to free himself from her arms, then held up the big sandwich to her, trying to not let any of the condiments fall out of its loose hold. “Uh, dig in?”
Something about this meant something much more to Estelle than just satisfying her hunger (although that was a big plus).
When they had been in small town, seeming so long ago, Estelle had felt so content seated next to Joshua on the bench, eating the freshly-prepared sandwiches they had gotten earlier from the market. She hadn’t realized the extent of her feelings then, even as she caught the soft catch of the light reflected in Joshua’s eyes, memories caught in amber. Because Joshua knew and remembered so much, more than she had been able to. Unlike her, he had always known.
She had got to be so up-close to him as she force-fed him their food, something about that moment engraving itself into her very heart. She wanted it to stay locked their forever.
Joshua still had those same eyes, though accompanied by a gentle blush on his cheeks. He looked away, towards the floorboards that connected to the far-right wall of their room. “Why are you staring so much, Estelle?”
Even his voice could always take away her breath so easily, but she was able to stay upright, to stay in control (even if her head still felt a little woozy), all while carrying the boy she loved in her lap. “Because I want to! Do you not like it?”
“I mean if you’re thinking weird things about me, then maybe.”
That only served to tickle Estelle, swinging her legs all excitedly as she continued to hold Joshua. “Not that weird! Maybe a little!” And before he could question it, Estelle could no longer resist. She took a huge chomp right out of the sandwich Joshua held out to her, leaning forward enough to catch the look of utter surprise on his face. It was even cuter when he was in the maid outfit!
“Ow! Estelle, you just bit my fingers!”
“Mmph? Somphy!” Estelle apologized through a muffled mouth. The sandwich was still good though!
“It’s…fine…” Joshua sighed again, but he hadn’t shifted from her lap. He continued holding the sandwich, closing his eyes, trying his best to stay peaceful. “I’m getting used to it.”
“I didn’t bite that hard this time!” Estelle said after swallowing her food. “Give me another! And don’t we have some cookies in there too?”
The time passed peacefully, for Estelle at least. After already scarfing down the sandwich and only biting at Joshua’s fingers two more times, they both started to share some chocolate chip cookies. Estelle felt like she was flying high in an airship, eating scrumptious cookies right out of Joshua’s hand. And she was more careful with her teeth this time!
After a while, Joshua looked to be at more ease, but every so often, he’d stare at Estelle, looking ready to speak but then pressing his lips together firmly. After about the fifth time, she had to ask him about that.
“What’s wrong, Joshua?” she said, spilling crumbs from her mouth. “Is the dress too tight?”
“It…Well, kinda.” He shook his head, all while brushing aside the crumbs to keep Estelle from making a mess. “Just, you haven’t really ever explained why you keep wanting me to wear this.”
“Hm, why not though? It’s fun!” Estelle’s face glowed with pride. “Is it because I can’t match with you? Maybe next time I can buy a pair!”
“It’s not that… And, you didn’t really answer my question.” Here, Joshua acted a bit more serious, or as serious as he could, still perched on Estelle’s lap. “Can you please tell me?”
It made Estelle think for a moment, even as she continued to chew on her cookie. It did give her a moment to think on it, and after a while, a soft smile broke through.
“I just think it’s nice…Because, well, maybe you haven’t noticed, but usually you’re the one that gets me all flustered instead.” Estelle’s cheeks brightened at the mention of it, remembering all those times when Joshua would nearly leave her speechless, turning all her thoughts into mush. “I’m so weak when I’m with you…like, in a good way, but still..”
She reached to take one of his hands with her, raising up her gaze to meet his eyes. “And now look at you! You’re like putty in my hands! Or my lap, I guess. And I like that. I like that I know that I can affect you the same way. It makes me feel even closer to you.”
Joshua was quiet as she spoke, still sitting quite easily on her lap, hands clasped together neatly as Estelle held on. He was really pulling off this look well. “Estelle…”
The wolfish grin she sported should have warned him then. She leaned in for a quick kiss on his cheek. “There!”
Stammering, blushing, and all around red in the face, Joshua was the complete opposite of his usual calm self. “E-Estelle!”
“What? You do that to me plenty!” To demonstrate further, Estelle leaned in to kiss Joshua’s other cheek, tapping her Stregas on the floor as she did so. “See?”
“I’m…not used to this…” he admitted. “And without the wig, I just look stupid. I really don’t understand how you like this.”
Estelle tilted her head, then shrugged. “I dunno. I just do! You look cute!” She poked at his sides then. “And so shy too!”
“Y-you know I’m ticklish there!”
“Yeah, exactly!” And she kept going, kept tickling to Joshua’s protests before she started to slow down slightly. “But maybe…stop spinning around so much, you know…”
“Estelle?”
“Ehe…” With her goofy grin, Estelle leaned in once more, looking like she was about to kiss him on the lips right then and there. Not that they haven’t already. Joshua had even been the one to take her first kiss too. But now it seemed like she would do the same almost…
Of course Estelle ended up falling backwards on the floor, bringing Joshua down with her.
His reflexes came in time to get him moving, to get to his feet and grab Estelle before she would hit her head against the floor. “Hey! What’s wrong?” he asked, genuine worry in his voice, his dark locks frayed about his head as he looked at her with concern.
“…I may or may not have a concussion,” Estelle said with a lazy wink. “Hehe…”
“Estelle, that’s not funny! We need to get you to a doctor. There should be one in town.” Joshua went to carry her up in his arms with a groan. As he cradled her head, carefully keeping it level, he looked at with her with maid-like disapproval. “You’re so troublesome sometimes…”
“I’m not troublesome…I’m Estelle!” She shook her head, her smile just a bit lop-sided. “Maybe it’s you that needs a doctor instead…”
“Alright, sure. Come along, Miss Troublesome.” Joshua headed straight for the door to their room, reaching to unlock it. “Try not to fall asleep, okay?”
“Hey…you’re still wearing the maid’s dress, you know?” she pointed out, even as the room was definitely getting all spinny now. “Thought you didn’t want people to see…”
“We shouldn’t waste any time. You need to get checked up.” But she saw that blush on his cheeks, even as he tried to play himself off as the cool Joshua Bright that she knew since childhood. “And it’s not so bad anyway…can move pretty freely in this.”
Estelle could feel the smile on her face. Maybe it was too wide and manic if she went from Joshua’s worried expression, but it didn’t matter. She laid her head against his shoulder, knowing that no matter what, he would always be there for her.
I Want You To Stay (Alexei x Reader)
Notes: This is so soft, I hope you like it!! Russian is in italics.
 Sitting atop one of the bar stools in your apartment kitchen, you strum out the first few chords of Faithfully by Journey, carefully looking over your tabs. Saturday night you were to perform at a small corner bar; and though the crowd wasn’t going to be enormous, you were nervous but ecstatic to have gotten the chance to play for a group of people. As you turn the page and begin looking over the next chord progression your telephone rings. Sighing, you sling your Acoustic guitar on your back and walk to the phone, letting it ring twice before answering.
“Hello?” you wondered who would be calling this late at night.
“(Y/N)! Hey! So uh, I know it’s short notice, but I’ve got somebody you need to see, I’ll be there in an hour!-”
“Wait, wha-” before you could question him, your Uncle had already hung up. He had always been bizarre, but the sudden late night phone call was out of the norm, even for him. You worried, as Uncle Murray had gotten himself into deep waters in the past, being an investigative journalist and all.
 As the time went by, you had sauteed some chicken and green peppers for dinner, showering shortly after, then returned to practicing. You sat at the kitchen island on your stool once again, finger picking and humming the tune of Nothing Looks The Same In The Light by Wham!. Your fingers slip and you mess up, starting over, this time, a bit slower.
“I watch you breathe…I cannot sleep…”
 Alexei, Murray, Hopper, and Joyce slowly approach the door of the red bricked apartment complex. Murray turns to Joyce and Hopper, looking around them cautiously,
“Keep an eye out for anything, I know we called from a payphone, but there’s always a chance they could trace it,” Murray warned.
“Are you sure this is a good place for him to stay? Aren’t you worried about endangering your niece?” Hopper questioned in a serious tone.
“We really don’t have any other options, Hop,” Joyce retorted.
Murray replied to both of them,
“You’re right Joyce, we really don’t, and for your information, (Y/N) can handle herself, and she knows her way around a gun if the situation calls for it,”
Alexei stood close to Murray, barely understanding the conversation, only knowing that he was going to be hiding out at Murray’s niece’s apartment for a little while, which he had told him earlier.
“Let’s head inside” Murray said to Alexei. He nodded, feeling nervous, still in a bit of shock from the near death experience he had just hours before.
 Slowly cracking the door open, Murray looks in to see you practicing, knowing not to interrupt. Alexei was dumbfounded by the soft melody leaving your mouth in tandem with the hum of a guitar. He had not heard another person sing in so long, and it left him with a calmness. The two of them slowly walked down the hall, approaching the kitchen where you resided.
“Please be kind…don’t change your mind,”
You sang softly as you felt a presence behind you, and turned to face your Uncle, and a handsome, but dirtied man who looked like he had been through hell, yet had a sweet look on his face.
“Beautiful,” Alexei mumbled, unaware that Murray taught you Russian throughout your life, and so you had a good understanding of the language. You stopped playing.
“Me? Or the song?” you said effortlessly, smiling at him, and he found himself feeling a bit shy which was unusual for him.
“Both,” he said looking at the floor, smiling,
The moment was staunchly interrupted with Murray rolling his eyes and grabbing Alexei by the arm, startling him,
“Seriously? Can we not do this right now?” Murray frustratingly stated at you and Alexei.
“Look, this is a time sensitive situation, so i’ll lay it out for you, nice and simple. This man-” Murray motions at Alexei, still holding his arm,
“Is a wanted Russian scientist, he wants to defect, and stay in the US. All I need you to do is keep him here for a few weeks, or at least until they give up searching for him. Okay? After that I’ll handle the rest,”
You look at Alexei, who is oblivious that you two are talking about him, and back to Murray,
“Okay, that shouldn’t be too difficult. But after this, you owe me,”
Murray lets out a breath of relief, and turns to Alexei,
“So you’ll be staying here until I get everything ready, okay?”
Alexei nods, “I will stay cautious, and I’ll make sure no harm comes to your niece,”
Murray takes those words to heart, gripping Alexei’s shoulder,
“Without you, none of us would have survived tonight,”
You give Murray a hopeful look,
“Be safe, Uncle Murray,”
“You too, (Y/N),” He smiles at you, then glaces at Alexei, heading to the door.
“Anything I should know about him?” you asked just before he opened the door,
“He’s not a fan of strawberry,”
The statement left you confused, and you looked up at Alexei, who stood in the hallway, an arm crossed against his stomach and the other reaching behind to rub his neck.
“Would you like something to eat?” you asked, certain that he didn’t have much to eat today.
“Oh! Yes please!” he eagerly replied, so you walked up to the fridge and pulled out the leftover dinner from earlier, placing it in the microwave.
The two of you sat at the island, and you watched Alexei slowly chew on the food. He must’ve not had the best diet working in a lab by force, you thought. You couldn’t help but notice his smudged glasses, and dirt stained button up. It was evident that Alexei had nothing with him, let alone clean clothes.
“Could I wash your clothing?” you asked him, as he looked up from his plate. He felt himself get red,
“I-I have no other clothes with me,” he said shyly, Looking back down. You got up and walked to your bedroom, shuffling through your closet. You grabbed one of your Dad’s old work shirts you borrowed from him, and a pair of flannel pajama pants that also belonged to him.
“Here, change into this,” you set the clothes in front of him on the counter.
You returned to your room, waiting a minute before coming back out to find Alexei standing in the kitchen, looking adorable in the slightly too small clothes, whilst holding his dirty ones in a neatly folded square. You glanced at the island and noticed the plate missing, he had washed it and put it on the rack, along with the silverware. Smiling at him, you walk up to grab the clothes,
“I can already tell you will be a great guest,” He smiles at the compliment, and a moment later freezes at the motion of you gently pulling off his glasses.
“I can clean these too,” you chuckled, and he couldn’t help but blush. He felt so incredibly lucky to stay in the home of a kind woman, and though he didn’t know much about her, he already felt safe and cared for in her space.
Two weeks had passed, and so far things were going very smoothly. No sign of Soviets in town, and you and Alexei enjoyed each other’s company. You rented various books on English from the library for him, and he would teach you more complex Russian words. While you were at work, he studied aggressively, wanting to make communication easier for the both of you, as well as others. And in the evenings, you would bring home cheesy comedy movies, and sometimes surprise him with various cherry flavored treats, as you quickly learned he indeed was not a fan of strawberry. Before bed, he loved to talk with you about scientific theories, and listen to you sing as you played your guitar passionately. He felt vulnerable for the first time in years, like he could tell you anything. He opened up to you about the horrid conditions of the lab, being taken from his family, and living underground for months. He had been through the worst, and now he had someone who listened, someone who cared, and respected him. He felt home. He found himself not wanting Murray to come get him in the coming days.
After a night of performing at the corner bar, you excitedly come home, guitar case in hand, and as open the front door, you notice how quiet the apartment is. You walk down the hall and place your case on the floor, seeing Alexei, sitting on the pullout, staring down at a translation dictionary.
“Alexei?” you softly call from the corner of the kitchen. He turns his head and looks up at you with a smile,
“Come sit, I have practiced my English,” you walk into the living area and sit close to him, making his stomach flutter.
“I, enjoy…time with you,” you look at him with affection and nod at him, assuring him his English is improving.
“Murray comes, in few days, but I think…” he pauses, feeling nervous at telling you what he wants.
“I would like to stay…with you,”
You look down at his fiddling hands, placing one of your own on top of them. He turns to you, uncertainty on his face. His heart pounds at the anticipation of your reaction. There’s a moment of silence and you look up to lock eyes with him,
“I want you to stay, Alexei,” you smile, your hand leaving his and wrapping around him in an embrace, his arms hooking under yours shortly after. You never thought you could become so close to someone this quickly, but with Alexei, everything seemed to fall into place. Even with the slight language barrier, the two of you had an understanding of each other, and most importantly, trust. He felt safe in your arms the way he did his family, and that meant everything to him.
You pulled away from the embrace, looking at Alexei sweetly, entwining your fingers with his.
“Alexei? Could I kiss you?” you asked in a soft whisper, wanting nothing more than to be close to the gentle man.
“Yes,” he chuckled, as he leaned in close to your face. You inched closer, looking at his plush mouth, and gripping his hands tightly, you place the most delicate kiss against his lips. The two of you held it for a long moment, before pulling away and laughing like kids. Never had you felt a love so light and gentle. Together, you spent the rest of the night serenading him, watching old cartoons, and cuddling. You had fallen asleep on the futon together. And as you closed your eyes you knew you were home.
