I've heard some fans interpret the Touga x Saionji relationship through the lens of Saionji wanting to be Touga's princess. But I think it's the opposite Saionji pushes back against the idea of being Touga's princess.
He wants to be with Touga as an equals. Touga is the one who wants Saionji in the princess role much like Nanami. He causes and bandages his wounds. Saionji threw himself into competing with Touga because he learned through patriarchy the only equal relationship between guys was competitors. He thinks only a masculine gender role will be the only way they can play together.
Saionji;'s eternal friendship was a last desperate attempt to make them equals because Saionji is terrified of submitting to Touga. Because Touga is an abuser and having no agency is terrifying.
The ending has Saionji enter the bride role with clear goals and agency. He's scared and exhausted but its still his choice. Its a step towards positive growth. Saionji is occupying a feminine role on his own terms and on equal grounds with Touga. Which the ending suggests they find they actually prefer.

Man, there are a lot of great (and very true) posts about how Knives doesn’t see his fellow plants as individuals, but this was the moment I really first had that gut-punch realization. I’m sure there are no rituals for laying a plant to rest, but it’s incredibly fucked up to take a corpse, writhing in pain, and string it up for your own motivation. Your own selfish purposes. The afterlife is something fairly present in the Trigun universe, and this soul surely isn’t at peace

Hi strange question but it’s been on my mind. Do you think it’s possible given his traumatic childhood, that Armand doesn’t actually understand what consent is?
Hello!
In short, yes. A lot of Armand’s, let’s call them quirks, are exactly because of his history. He was horrifically abused, sold into slavery, made to do what others wanted him to do under very dubious circumstances of “consent”, and he learned from Marius (and others) that it doesn’t really matter what someone actually wants, so much as “do what is best for them.” That particular brand of brainwashing is the reason for a lot of Armand’s later unconsented liberties in his relationships, such as his mind games with both Louis and Lestat as well as his relentless pursuit of Daniel. Armand was desperately trying to learn how to actually behave like a civilized being. I’ve always likened him to the scene in Frankenstein in which the monster is tossing petals in the water with the little girl. It’s sweet until the monster also throws the girl in the water, not understanding she’s not a flower petal, and then she drowns and the monster is distraught.
Like with all these characters, there are reasons for why they behave like they do. They were all, at some point, born from trauma, and that trauma is what shaped who they’d become in their immortal lives, and this is especially true of Armand and his background with religion, original sin, salvation and damnation, and the fact he feels he’s damned no matter what. I love Armand, and I’m quite excited to see the ups and downs of his story finally realized. He’s fascinating and also endearing in the way he does what he thinks is right, even when it’s awful or batshit bonkers.
For example, his experiment with Claudia. That was one of his most horrific acts, imo. However, it’s also the fact he’s so owning of it. He’s so unapologetic about it and felt he was perfectly justified in doing it and keeping it from Louis. Yet at the same time, there’s also a guileless desire on his part to understand why that little experiment maybe wasn’t the best idea. Same thing as his credo of “cleaning up” rogue vampires. It’s sort of a “Father forgive me for what I do, BUT….” attitude, and I just love that about him.

thinking again about the touga wrapping saionji’s hand flashback framed as this moment of romantic tenderness but also I find it very difficult to read touga so charitably, especially when he then thanks saionji in a way that implies that he likes being able to hurt him??? which isn’t to say that I think touga utterly lacks all genuine feeling, but he obviously conceives of love through a logic of power and domination (due to his own formative abuse), and thus enjoys the ability to not only hurt saionji but also then tenderly patch up the wounds he caused as a way of making saionji vulnerable and thus dependent on him.
to help or care for another can be a genuine, tender moment of affection, but based on what we know of touga and the framework through which he has learned to view the world, even saionji’s cherished shining memory is permeated with this logic of power and control. touga appreciates saionji because saionji doesn’t seem to mind being made vulnerable to soothe touga’s highly fragile ego.
and what makes that scene so fascinating is the way it’s directly contrasted with touga actively manipulating saionji into hurting him in the present. touga admits that the wound is in fact minimal, but he makes a great show of being in tremendous pain, exaggerating the force with which saionji struck him. even when touga is ostensibly making himself vulnerable, a reversal of their formative kendo injury moment (sparring practice versus a “real” duel), he is still the one in control of saionji, playing up his pain to exacerbate saionji’s guilt, without revealing any real pain, certainly no pain true enough to render him actually vulnerable.
touga fosters a dependency complex with saionji and nanami just as akio does with anthy and utena by positioning himself as the ultimate victim even as he hurts and manipulates others to hold power over them. when nanami spends all day trying to catch a stray kitten to give to her brother who she knows loves cats, she is admonished for getting her dress dirty, at which point touga swoops in an comforts her, so that all nanami can remember is the comfort he provided her instead of the sacrifices she made for his love. when touga hurts saionji during kendo practice, he then tenderly wraps his hand so that all saionji can later recall is the intimacy of the act instead of who hurt him in the first place. when wild animals stampede across the school, tsuwabuki swoops in to recuse her until all she can remember is the boy who saved her from peril.
except, not really. tsuwabuki exists to emphasize the problematics of this logic, to signal to the viewer the exact mechanisms of manipulation touga is employing, and how creepy it seems even to nanami herself when these tactics are not employed with care and subtlety. even touga is nowhere near as subtle as akio, who fosters an environment of stifling conformity and then presents himself as a subversive rebel who is both powerful enough to excite but grounded enough to be a comforting presence.
and that is the entire function of the prince, is it not? to save princesses from the violence of a system they themselves have an active role in maintaining. to foster a dependency complex wherein they cannot envision a world beyond your imposed limits, and then scoff and dismiss and deride them when they struggle to escape. to blame the victim for being victimized by a victim who was, once, victimized in turn. to sit back to back on a stationary bicycle — cycling in place as the sun goes down.

you bet your ass when Han-seo spots a restaurant called La Mafia during their trip thru Europe he'll point at Vincenzo like "lookit you!", and insist on going there for dinner where he would ofc tell everyone that his brother is also mafia, like their restaurant name, forcing Vincenzo to pretend he only speaks Korean and has no idea what's going on

Utena omake CD thoughts
Anthy's passive aggressive snark is just too good. also how she keeps changing the title. " This is Anthy Himenyia pretending to care about your life." lol!
Saionji signing his name right on his anonymous letter (he would).
The surpriseing realization that Anthy might hate Miki more then Saionji or Nanami. Her response to his letter was just dam the rose bride mask was slipping. " Demanding someone become something you want is a waste of time. the other person is their own self they won't become what you desire."
It gets funnier when Utena tells her to give a softer response and Anthy's softer response is even more snide. lol!
Nanami insisting she is the protagonist of her own story is freaking great!

Touga: True friendship doesn't exist.
Saionji: Hold my beer while I forgive you everything bad you ever did to me. Which consist mostly of emotional abuse where you helped grind my self worth to dust and helping a pedo to groom me. Watch me follow you into the groomers clutches, poke holes in you bs because I'm concerned for you. Risk my life and sanity to help you save the girl you like. While ending up in another awful defeat, car crash.
Touga: As I was saying true friendship doesn't exist.
