Chapter 30

────── ⋆⋅ ✦ ⋅⋆ ──────

The heavy doors leading to the balcony outside the ballroom where the post-season party rages on slam shut tight behind you. The din from inside quiets immediately and you revel in the short bout of peace.

It’s been nothing but bedlam since you and Sakusa won the World Championship a few hours ago. From interviews to press conferences to calling Suga and crying and finding Kiyoko and crying and celebrating her silver medal. You barely had time to shower and change before coming to the party. It’s to celebrate all skaters who competed in the World tournament but it’s also a great place for sponsors to come out and start conversations for next season’s sponsorships.

You yourself had plenty of prominent men and women come up to you, discussing what your plans were for next season and whether or not they could send you their athleisure-wear line for you to try on and maybe give a shoutout on social media.

“Not a word to anyone,” your coach had hissed at your before leaving the party. She and Sakusa’s coach were currently drafting statements you both are planning to release tomorrow morning about you both parting ways. She was livid that you chose to make the announcement, in general and tomorrow, and she tried to dissuade you. You told her point blank that you were making it tomorrow, regardless of her input. She shot you a nasty glare before leaving the party and typing into her phone.

Probably sending off an email to the JSF. Probably bitching about you to them. You found that you didn’t care in the slightest. No, the only thing, or rather the only person, you cared about tonight was currently hiding away from the crowds and noise and Atsumu screaming his head off and showing off his gold medal draped around his neck. Part of you thought about wearing your gold medal to the party, but decided against it, thinking it was too gaudy.

Seeing Atsumu prance around like a peacock tonight made you realize you were right.

You glance around the balcony, empty save for tables and chairs stacked against the building. It’s nearly the beginning of spring but the outside patio has not been set up. Leaves are scattered across the ground, and the floor could do with a decent sweeping. Despite the slight mess, you see a figure leaning against the railing, looking out across the city. You make your way towards him.

“I thought you’d be inside celebrating.” Sakusa tells you as you join him. He doesn’t look to you when he speaks. “You should be, at least. You just won the world championship.”

“I’ll go in and celebrate when you do.” You reply. “May I join you?”

At that Sakusa glances at you, hesitating before giving you a slight nod. If he’s curious as to why you sought permission he doesn’t ask. It felt weird to, but you didn’t want to invade the space of someone who no longer wants to compete with you. It was better to be safe than sorry.

“I’d rather not be around for the drunk fest that’s soon to follow these events.” Sakusa nods back towards the inside. “No more strict regimen, no more balanced meal plans - people lose their common sense.”

You consider what he said and nod in agreement. “That’s fair.”

“You should go back in,” Sakusa tells you again. His voice is quiet but measured. “This is a big deal, you just won your first gold medal in your debut season.”

You take in his words, trying to find the value you’ve been chasing for your entire life in them. You won the gold medal, you were a World Champion. You were one of the best figure skaters in the entire world. Your following was growing, people were clambering to talk to you, big companies looking at you with interest.

“I don’t know, it doesn’t really feel like a win to me.”

Sakusa looks down at you, eyebrows furrowed. “Is this you being a perfectionist and completely disregarding the hard work it took for you to get here?”

You shake your head. “No I’m very aware of what it took for us to win. I’m just…” You let the sentence trail off, unable to find the right words to explain that despite winning the championship you feel like you’ve lost everything important to you.

Either Sakusa understands what you were trying to say or he didn’t have anything important to add to it, and he turns back to face the cityscape.

Minutes pass and neither of you try to make any conversation. You know there is going to be a goodbye. You can feel it on the horizon, approaching quicker than you intended, quicker than you want. You don’t want to be the catalyst for the eventual end, and you take the time now to bask in his presence. You take every second to catalog the sense of calm and peace you only found with him, despite the tumultuous time it took to achieve it. Maybe that’s why it’s so important to you - this was a relationship that was hard, and it took a lot of patience and energy and growth that you didn’t expect. You’ve come out of this season a changed person, and a lot of it is thanks to the man standing next to you.

You can’t imagine that he’s going through the same thought process, you know you’re not important enough in the grand scheme of Sakusa Kiyoomi’s life. This year for him was a nasty blemish on an otherwise flawless career path.

“That was the best skate I have ever done in my entire life.”

You look at Kiyoomi, who is staring down at you. He’s gone without a mask tonight, and he is giving you a rare, tiny smiles. It’s tinged with pride and pain.

“I’ve never skated like that before, and it’s all thanks to you YN.” You feel your own eyebrows raise at his compliment. “I know it was the last time we ever skate together, in a competition at least, but I just needed you to know that you brought out the best in me. We won tonight not because of my skill or your skill alone. We won because you brought us together and made something of it.” His smile grows into something tender, just enough to make your heart squeeze uncomfortably.

“I couldn’t have done this with anyone else. You know I’ve tried. But with you, it worked. Not just worked, it flourished. We won a world title.” Kiyoomi laughs a little. “I promised I would get you one, but I didn’t do anything.”

You don’t speak yet, knowing that if you try and articulate your current thoughts all that will come out is a garbled mess of words mixed in with ugly sobbing. If this goodbye is going to go down like this you know you aren’t going to survive the actually goodbye. You will die right here on this balcony in Barcelona, obliterated by the gentle praise from one of the most incredible, and reserved, people you know.

A memory comes to you. It’s from early in the season, where a very different Kiyoomi is glaring at you on the ice. You can’t remember what was said or done, but you remember the cold contempt behind his eyes, and the snarl that was hidden under his mask. Maybe this was when he dropped you on the ice, or maybe this was after he tore apart your training and practice. It doesn’t matter, because you won’t forget the pure hatred Sakusa held for you then, and how small it had made you feel.

And now, you’re facing Kiyoomi, an accomplished athlete, multi-world champion, and arguably the best male figure skater in the world, as he tells you that you were the one who brought you both here. It’s a stark difference to the man you knew before that you can’t help but tear up.

You feel Sakusa take your hand in his, feel the smooth skin that you’ve felt many times before in your routines. “I don’t know what I could do to ever repay you for changing my life for the better.”

His last sentence is nearly whispered, as if he’s contemplating with himself. Maybe thinking on what he could do to make it up to you. Your brain supplies one idea, but it contradicts the entire situation unfurling right in front of your eyes.

“Why are you doing this?” You ask in a whisper. “Why are you telling me this?”

You see Kiyoomi’s eyebrows furrow together slightly. “I’m thanking you, YN. I’m telling you how I feel.”

You shake your head. “No, it doesn’t make sense. Why are you saying all of this to me and still choosing to leave me?”

It’s the other side of the coin, no? The much-sharper end of the sword. Kiyoomi praises you and dotes on you, before excusing himself from your life forever. Does he realize what he’s doing? Does he understand the amount of pain he’s inflicting upon you? Has he any idea how much this will destroy you?

Recognition crosses his face and he sighs. “I’m sorry, I’m not trying to make this harder for you. For us.”

“I just don’t understand,” you argue. You’re fighting to keep your voice steady. “What did I do wrong?”

“Nothing.” Kiyoomi replies immediately. “You did absolutely nothing wrong.”

He grabs your other hand, holding onto you desperately and staring into your eyes. “I want to keep skating with you, truly I do. But I don’t think that’s a good idea.

“I did some digging, and I found the emails.” He tells you. “I found all of the emails that I was part of, even my ‘replies.’” He stops again, staring at you imploringly. “YN, I never wrote those. I know you may not believe me but I swear I did not.”

“I believe you,” you say.

He nods, and sighs heavily. “But it doesn’t matter. I found the emails, and I went to my coach looking for more answers. She told me everything - how the JSF put our pairing together as a means to punish you. I earned favor with them, but they were looking to ‘put you in your place.’” Kiyoomi scowls and shakes his head. “Those were the exact words my coach used, and she wondered why I seemed so upset about this.”

“Oh.” You don’t know how to handle this Kiyoomi, one who’s vehemence is, for once, not directed at you, but in defense of you. It’s more than his minor irritants towards life’s inconveniences. More confusing emotions swell within you, but seeing how little people have cared about your feelings as of late, a part of you can’t deny how nice it is to have someone getting upset for you.

“I spent the flight here thinking about my actions, and how blind I’ve been to everything happening around me. I thought about what you said, and what Oikawa told you - I even went searching through old articles and stories when Oikawa retired from the sport. I can’t believe how obvious the slander was. And how stupid we all were for just going along with what they were telling us.” Kiyoomi sighs hard and shakes his head. “I’ve been so negligent, and I’ve become part of the problem.”

“I don’t think that’s true.” You reply. You tighten your grip, trying to reassure him. “You weren’t actively trying to push me down, or whatever. You didn’t even know.”

“That’s the point, YN.” The faintest amount of frustration seeps through his voice as Kiyoomi shakes his head angrily. “I’ve been so focused on my career, and my skating, not caring whether or not my peers are even able to compete with me. It’s not about wanting a fair fight, it’s about ensuring that everyone has a fair shot at skating how they want. How can I be proud to skate under the Japanese flag when our country holds biases against my skaters, and my partner, for no other reason than their desire for control?”

Kiyoomi is getting heated now, his breath coming out harsher as he quietly rants at you. You bring your other hand up to his arm and rub up and down in a soothing manner, hoping to bring some semblance of calm to him. In all fairness, you want to rant along with him and bash the JSF, but seeing him get so upset unsettles you.

“I hope you’re not trying to blame yourself for this,” you say lightly.

“No, I know that.” Kiyoomi brings his intense gaze back to you. “And I’m not trying to bring the focus back to me, or minimize the damage that’s been done to you. It’s uncomfortable realizing this, and I spent a lot of this competition trying to decide what I should do.

“I know I hold some weight with the JSF, and I know I am a prominent figure in the skating world. I have an incredible amount of privilege - I was ignorant of it because I was jaded by how the press had treated me in the past. A treatment that is slim compared to what you, and Oikawa, and god who knows how many other skaters have experienced. But that’s no excuse for not using my platform to help bring change or awareness - remaining silent is just as detrimental as actively pushing people down.”

He sighs, and this one is different from before. It’s heavy with bitterness. “This season you’ve shown the world how amazing you are. You have more than proved your worth as a professional figure skater. But despite that, you’re still seen as my partner. Not YN, the best female figure skater, but YN, Sakusa Kiyoomi’s partner. And after what my coach told me, I don’t think the JSF is giving you more room to grow.”

Your heart skips in your chest. “Wait, what did she say? What is the JSF planning?”

Kiyoomi pauses before answering, shifting uncomfortably. “Well, before we told them that we were splitting, they wanted to push that I was the one who got you back on track and helped you realize your potential.”

Something similar to the fury you felt when Oikawa gave you the emails thrums through your veins, but it’s muted. Part of you is confused that you’re not as fired up as before, and you’re not trying to think of an action plan to get back at the JSF.

But honestly, you’re tired. And not just from competing on the world’s stage only hours ago, and traveling around the globe for competitions. No, this is a weariness that comes from carrying this invisible target on your back. It comes from being played around like a pawn. It’s the desolation that comes from realizing that you have no choice in how you wish to skate and represent yourself, and how you feel about that is disregarded.

Kiyoomi speaks up. “I tried. I tried to think of any scenario that meant we could keep skating together. But I can’t.” He looks at you, and you see the same pain reflected in his dark eyes. “If we continue together, you’ll never be able to skate how you want to skate.”

It’s that sentence that finally makes the tears fall from your eyes, and you let your head bow forward as you succumb to the sorrow you feel.

Two arms wrap around you, and you’re gently pulled into Kiyoomi’s embrace. And doesn’t that make you sob harder, knowing that this could be the last time you’ll be comforted by him like this.

“I’m sorry,” he murmurs. He sounds just as upset as you feel.

“I thought you hated me,” you babble, speaking through your tears.

“I thought you didn’t want to skate with me, I thought I was -“

“No.” He says firmly. “No YN, it’s the opposite. I only want to be with you.”

A hand comes up to card through your hair, and you close your eyes and allow yourself to enjoy the comfort. Even though it comes at a cost.

“You’re not going to get rid of me that easily,” Kiyoomi tells you. “I guarantee I will still beat you on morning jogs.”

You laugh wetly, knowing that you could run circles around him. But more tears fall down your face. Despite Kiyoomi’s attempts to soothe the hurt, you still can’t help but mourn the loss of a future of skating with Sakusa Kiyoomi. A future of being with Sakusa Kiyoomi.

You feel lips press against your temple, and arms tighten around you before Kiyoomi releases you. You lift your gaze and find him looking down at you with a sad smile.

“I have to go. My flight leaves in a few hours.” You nod, ignoring the desperation trying to claw its way out of your heart and latch onto Kiyoomi. “Okay, safe travels.”

He nods at you. A hand comes up to caress your cheek, and before you know it he bends down to press a gentle kiss to your lips

“Goodbye YN.”

He walks away, leaving you alone on the balcony. You watch him leave, knowing that a piece of your heart leaves with him.
