vegan tag!

When did you become a vegan? I’ve been a vegan since I was 18, so nearly 9 years.

Why did you become a vegan? I had already been a vegetarian for five years at that point for moral reasons, and began cutting more and more animal products out of my life and it just made since to make the commitment.

What was the hardest part about becoming vegan? Those around me being discouraging. I dove in head first and it wasn’t as hard as I thought it’d be, but I had very little support along the way.

Is it difficult to be vegan? Honestly, no. Maybe I lucked out with how much I love to cook, and I did a good amount of research before making the leap, but it was a really seamless transition for me and it’s been smooth ever since.

Do you let certain things “slide” from time to time? (for example, use/purchase non-vegan items. etc.) No. There’s always an alternative.

How do you deal with people who are close minded about your lifestyle? Suffer in silence. I don’t play along because I don’t want to take it lightly, but I was quick to learn that getting too defensive isn’t worth the hassle from someone who won’t let me educate them. I’ll always explain my position or rationally explain why I don’t/won’t eat or partake in something that’s against my beliefs, but you have to choose your battles sometimes.

Do you support Vegetarianism and or (“something’s better than nothing’s”)? I would definitely rather someone be a vegetarian over omni, but I would hope they’d consider going vegan when they’re ready.

What is your favorite specialty vegan item? (name as many as you’d like!) Beyond sausages are kind of everything.

What is your opinion of the meat and dairy alternatives? While health was and is definitely a factor in me being a vegan, I did it first and foremost for ethical reasons, so I’m a fan of substitutes within reason. They prevent cravings and the’re good for serving skeptical omnis, so I think that as long as it doesn’t make up your entire diet, it’s better than flesh.

What is your opinion about palm oil? It’s a slippery slope. If the company sources it sustainably, it’s one thing. I try to veer away from it either way, and if it was ill-gotten, it’s a hard pass.

Do you feel judged by other vegans sometimes? How do you deal with it? It’s rare, but it happens. For the most part it’s a nice kinship, but it’s never without the sparce few “holier than thou” types that make it hard. I’m not sure if I could ever see myself being a raw, low-this, no-that vegan and as long as I’m doing right by the animals that’s okay by me, but at the same time I know that means I’ll always have someone sticking their nose up at my bean burrito. You can’t win them all.

Do you enjoy being a vegan? I love it. I feel good about my choices, both physically and mentally, and I know I’m making an impact. I don’t regret a single day.
