Have you ever been surrounded by a group of people where you feel completely at ease. There is no judgement upon you or from you to them, you can be who you were genetically born to be and feel comfortable in yourself because there is complete acceptance. On top of that they know the right conversation to have with you because they know the language you speak. And at the end of the day when you’re running out of steam and need a break they get it because they know you so well that they understand genetically you do better in the mornings and afternoons are for winding down and light conversations. I spent my whole weekend in this state of absolute flow. Having inspiring conversations about what is to come in the world of health and how artificial intelligence is going to soon guide us to healthier lifestyles in more advanced way than ever before. I’ve always been a runner. I never considered I would be good at weights because I was so lean. But what I have learnt on my health journey is my body actually loves weight training and if I put enough focus in on what food I eat and how I train I can actually build a decent amount of muscle. Now in saying that, it’s not easy. I’ve had many women say to me ‘I don’t want to look bulky’ in fact it’s not easy to look bulky. It’s a hard job with hours in the gym and the right balance of foods. But it’s not for everyone. Some bodies are not built for weight training and some bodies are not built for running. When I understood what was right it helped me know that if I push my body too hard I burn out easily and get agitated. This happened yesterday. While I took it easy my body wasn’t ready for the stress I put it under. I was tired and cranky for the rest of the day. Now I know from experience this only happens in the early stages of training and stops happening after a couple of runs. I know next time I just have to lighten the load a little and take it easy. Then next week we’re adding weight. Hello cheese lovers! I love this idea for a snack. Super simple and easy to prepare a weeks worth of snacks. 6 pieces Grapes, a mix of red and green 75 grams Soft Goat's Cheese 50 grams Blue Cheese 75 grams Comté or Cheddar 75 grams Membrillo (Quince Paste) Instructions 1. Slice the grapes in half, then cut the cheeses and quince paste into 12 pieces. 2. Thread a grape half onto a mini skewer, followed by a piece of each of the cheeses and a piece of quince paste. 3. I had an interesting conversation with an Uber driver this week. He was telling me how he got into driving for Uber. He started in the workforce as an accountant, while he liked his job it wasn’t inspiring for him. So, he bought a new car and started driving for Uber, it wasn’t going to be for long, only until he figured out what he wanted to do next. I asked him if he found it boring compared to his work as an accountant. He replied he loved the fact he worked half the hours for the same money, moved from an highly stressful job to no stress, from working long restrictive hours to working when he wanted, having no work life balance to having lifestyle balance. He was no older than 35 and he already knew there was more to life than slaving away and working against what his body needs and thrives on. This is a similar conversation I have had with a few of the next generation coming through. Instead of doing what society has told them is right they’re already listening to what their body needs and thrives on. Tonight I worked until 9pm. I don’t normally work that late because my brain normally switches off at about 5pm. But like many businesses we’ve got a few big deadlines coming up. My brain still started to switch off at 5 and it was very hard to concentrate but the way I look at it is I can go over it in the morning and fix it if needs be. Have you ever wondered how some people could stay up all night studying and be fresh the next morning. My brain never worked like that. My most productive time of the day is between 9-11am my genius kicks in around lunch time when I can brainstorm but the end of the day I am fried. Everybody’s brain works differently and it comes down to your genetics and if you’re a night owl or early bird. The night owls brain works clearly during the evening. These are the people who can study into the night and retain all that information. While the early bird is clear during the morning. Getting up early and bursting into the day. That’s me. But at times we have to work outside that chronobiology and today was one of those days. It’s coming into salad season so I thought this would be perfect. I love a good salad. 1/2 cup Walnuts 1 cup Cauliflower 1/2 medium Sliced Avocado 1/4 cup Coriander 2 handfuls Washed Salad leaves of your choice 2 teaspoons Chili oil 1/2 medium Sliced Peach 1/2 tablespoon Lime, juiced Instructions 1. Preheat oven to 177°C. 2. Line baking sheet with parchment paper. 3. Add cauliflower and walnuts to a blender or food processor, pulse until walnuts and cauliflower are size of grains. 4. Place in oven for 20-30 min or until crispy and golden, stirring halfway through. 5. In the meantime, make the avocado cream by using a food processor or a bowl and fork. 6. Combine avocado, coriander and juice of 1/2 lime and blend until smooth and creamy (if you prefer chunks, just pulse it briefly or use the bowl and fork method). 7. Prepare the salad bowl by adding salad leaves and mixing it with chili oil. 8 Add it to a bowl, top with avocado cream, walnut cauliflower, a few peach slices (and/or tomato salsa), and some more coriander leaves. Note(s) Optional ingredient: tomato salsa If this is too healthy for you, just skip the salad and replace it with homemade tortilla. Stress can show in many ways. I know for me when I get stressed I feel agitated, I can feel my heart racing, I am snappy and not the greatest person to be around. Stress raises its ugly head for many reasons, deadlines, unhealthy relationships, lack of sleep, eating bad foods or even eating at the wrong time. The funny thing about stress is when we’re at work we push through bottle it all up and then when we get home we project it onto our family... lucky them. Identifying stress is the first step to overcoming it. If you know your body is under strain then you can move towards putting your body in a healthier, calmer environment. In today’s high paced lifestyle, not many of us identify stress and if we do many of us overlook it for the bigger picture. Using the excuse ‘I just have to get this done’ or ‘I’ll be fine to push through’. But what studies have shown is that pushing through this mental strain threatens our health throwing the natural balance of our body out of kilter and making way for disease and mental health problems. In today’s day and age we need balance more than ever. We need to slow down and listen to what our body is telling us. And it’s different for us all. I know my stress relief is exercise while for you it might be meditation, getting on top of sleep patterns, or eating the right food for your body. Every winter I do the same thing. I set a goal to run the city to surf which is on the other side of Winter. But when I get to the middle of Winter I bail. I don’t do cold, nor do I do running in the cold. So, I am now setting my running goal after failing again to run through Winter. This is my reminder next year that running through Winter doesn’t work for me and I need to figure out what does. In the mean time the weather is now getting warmer and I am pretty keen to get back out there and hit the running trails. Goal is 10 km by Xmas. Who’s ready to start setting summer goals. When I was a teenager I lived in the moment. When I was in my 20’s I lived to build a career. When I reached my 30’s it was about work life balance and how to be in my best health. I am almost 40 and already I am thinking about my legacy left on this earth. What will my message to the world be? I have been working on a personalised health project for almost two years now. It’s a health coaching program to help people learn about their body and give them the tools to implement life changes to help guide them to a healthy lifestyle . I started this journey so I could learn about myself but when I started talking to others and sharing what I had learned I found it was helping them too. I want the world to know, you are all unique. Every little bit of you. What we see on the outside is a direct reflection of your health on the inside. Research is now telling us chronobiology or the science of time plays a major factor in our health. It’s more important than exercise and nutrition alone. Health is not a 30 day challenge or a six week diet. It’s far more than that. It’s healthy relationships, vibrant communities, equality, challenging your brain at the right time, relaxation and understanding etc Good health is not one decision. It’s making the decision time and time again to eat nutritious food, exercise, be friendly to the waiter, take a nap when you need it, set boundaries when they’re being crossed and building communities with a group of like minded people. Let’s talk about difficult people at work or home. We all know at least one of them I am sure. Jan always comes into the office and she seems highly strung, she’s blunt, loud and sometimes she scares me a little so I just avoid her. But so does everyone else because no body has taken the time to see if Jan is ok. But when someone takes the time to sit down and talk to Jan they realise there is a lot happening in Jan’s life. Her husband is in hospital sick, she is stressed and run down and now no one in the office talks to her. So often we can judge a situation before we understand what is happening. But taking the time to dig a little deeper can not only help us to understand, but it can also help others who may need to be understood. This photo is my daughter Blake, she is my part time job. Understanding her takes effort everyday as I am sure many mothers can relate to. Whether they are 50 or 3 years old. Taking the time to work on a relationship in the office or at home will help towards creating a harmonious and stress free environment for everyone. It only takes one person with the courage to step out of their comfort zone to try and understand another human being. I am a sweets girl! I love my chocolate so I am always looking at healthy ways to get my fix. Here is a great one. But a heads up while there are healthier ingredients in this recipe there still needs to be balance. 2 large Avocados 1/2 cup Unsweetened cocoa powder 1/2 cup Agave syrup, raw 1 & 1/2 teaspoons Puréed Vanilla Extract 1 pinch Cinnamon 1/2 pint Raspberries Instructions 1. Throw this all in the blender and pulse until you have a decadent chocolate mouse. 2. Pour into a martini glass if you want to be fancy or a paper cup 3. At the end of last year I lost about 5 kilos. Because I am a small person it was very noticeable. I was trialling a few things in my diet, one was the type of food I ate and the other was chronobiology, the science of time. There are some major benefits to your health when you eat at the right time or even train at the right time of day. I changed my breakfast from oats to eggs and all my other meals stayed the same. And I stopped eating any foods between the times 3-6pm. That’s it! From these two changes my body was hugely impacted. You don’t need to change you whole diet to make the changes your looking for.
