They were, if it came to it, difficult to daunt or to kill; and they were, perhaps, so unwearyingly find of good things not least because they could, when put to it, so without them, and could survive rough handling by grief, foe, or weather in a way that astonished those who did not know them well an looked no further than their belliesand their well-fed faces.
I have a long term belief I have inattentive Attention Deficit Disorder, I’m currently on the wait list that’s about 3 years long for a full diagnosis.
I have real trouble holding my concentration and lately it’s been getting a whole lot worse, especially with work.
Weirdly enough, I’ve found that lo-fi beats have really helped me to concentrate, that an a pomodoro timer have probably saved my job.
I found this one today that I wanted to share, as it’s quite brilliant…a continuous Lord of the Rings lo-fi chill out playlist!
With recognisable tunes and the occasional classic quote.
I knew D&D ripped off Tolkien, of course, but I didn’t realize until recently just how comprehensively they’d done it. They’ve got three groups of halflings (these particular quotes are from 2e) that are literally Fallohides, Harfoots, and Stoors with the serial numbers filed off. In two of the three cases, even the names are blatantly similar!
Tallfellow: A taller and slimmer halfling with fair skin and hair, tallfellows are somewhat rare among the halfling folk. Tallfellows generally speak the language of elves in addition to those listed previously and creatly enjoy their company
LOTR, “Concerning Hobbits”: “The Fallohides, the least numerous…were more friendly with Elves than the other hobbits were, and had more skill in language.” Frodo is part Fallohide (from his Brandybuck side) and is described by Gandalf as “taller than some and fairer than most”.
Stout: These hobbits are shorter and stockier than the more common hairfoots…Stouts also have no fear of water and, in fact, many are excellent swimmers.
“Concerning Hobbits”: “The Stoors were broader, heavier in build…they preferred flat lands and riversides.”
Hairfoots: [Described as the most common type, more pastoral than others
“Concerning Hobbits”: “[Harfoots] were the most normal and representative variety of hobbit, and my far the most numerous…They were the most inclined to settle in one place”
Yes, they called Harfoots ‘Hairfoots’. They didn’t even try to conceal it!
“All Hobbits were, in any case, clannish and reckoned up their relationships with great care. They drew long and elaborate family-trees with innumerable branches.” ~ Prologue, Concerning Hobbits, The Fellowship of the Ring (Art: “Baggins of Hobbiton” family tree by Daniel Reeve)
My friend sent me a TikTok and it had concerning hobbits playing in the background which means now I'm crying and will need 10-14 business days to recover
