Some quick tips to spotting accounts that are pretending to be a Palestinian needing mutual aid. Please keep in mind that not all of them are scam accounts, and that some may legitimate blogs who just aren’t too knowledgeable on how tumblr works. This guide is based around what I go by when checking certain blogs and usually it’s a quick giveaway the blog is a scam.

1. You was sent the ask as someone who regularly shares Palestine related content such as regular news updates of posts by other Palestinians who are regularly giving updates. You may also get these asks from sharing a popular post that is from the Palestine tag. If you post often about Palestine, you will always start getting these asks. These askers don’t care if you state don’t send the asks. They will anyway. Unfortunately minors also get sent asks.

2. The ask has odd formatting such as having odd quotation marks in it or unusual formatting that may indicate it’s been edited and copied from somewhere else. Often the ask is the same thing as the post itself minus a link to a donation site. These asks rarely change so searching it should pull up if it’s been sent to other bloggers.

3. The account is almost always a few days old or a week old or long depending on how often they have sent asks.

4. The blog has a few Palestine related posts or posts from random tags reblogged to pad out length and then no more. They will have no original posts besides the pinned post while occasionally answering asks that they may have received but otherwise nothing else and no further updates given either.

5. They may have a Linktree link that is called “GoFundMe” as if indicating they have a GoFundMe there. However, they don’t. When clicked on, the Linktree actually goes to a PayPal account whose name may not even match the one their supposed name is. They’ll say it’s a friend, but it’s just the same person not someone else. You’ll see this same name across multiple accounts after a while usually giving away it’s not legitimate even under a different theme.

6. The text used by the blogs are often real stories stolen from legitimate fundraisers and searching parts of it in your preferred search engine should pull up the sources. These sources make no mention of a tumblr account either or don’t have the PayPal account associated with them in the info. Scammers often impersonate a real person in need and will ignore you if you show them the source they copied from.

7. Legitimate Palestinians often link to their own GoFundMe posts that their friends have set up or post links to other social platforms they are found on. They will regularly post updates when possible, post sources to support them when necessary, and also generally have some method of verifying their legitimacy. They may often share links to support others as well or give links to charities that have been shown as reliable. They will have more original posts than just a single pinned one and regularly speak to other tumblr accounts beyond just an ask. Please don’t bother them with asks about possible scam accounts. There are many guides out there that can do that for you if you search.

8. Scammers don’t know anything about Palestine and will often have trouble once you ask them anything beyond the mutual aid post. They don’t know the languages decently and you can tell it pretty easily if you’re one who uses it regularly. Whatever the scammers use is often just copied off the site they got the post from.

9. These scammers can and will use names stolen off real Palestinians to look more legitimate and trustworthy. They change names constantly once one of their PayPal accounts is shut down.

Please don’t let these scams deter you from sending support where it needs to go. Even if you can’t donate personally, there are other ways to help. If you are sending money, please make sure that it’s going to where it’s needed and the place it’s sent has been verified accordingly. If you find a blog is a scammer, and have been able to prove it, please make sure to alert anyone sharing the post and report the account.

in one way, this is through you expressing your interests in the poetry, books, film, and other forms of art that your person likes. asking them about the book they’re reading, or the movie they have on their shirt, or the anime pins they have on their backpack -- etcetera. art -- or a specific piece of media -- is important to your person, and they enjoy talking about it. your person will be impressed by you if you show genuine interest in the art they like and have a genuine conversation with them about it.

for example: you say, “oh, by the way i’ve started watching that series you like!” and they’ll immediately be excited and jump into asking you questions like, “what did you think about such and such? and just wait until you meet so and so!”

they will be impressed by how serious you take their recommendations. they will be impressed by your intellectual insights on the piece of art they recommended. and will also take this as an opportunity to find out more about what you like. to check out the art, or specific piece of media, that you like.

this is either because they are not that interested in you, and, thus, will not be impressed by anything you try do, or they are simply easily impressed.

the food critic from ratatouille suddenly comes to mind. this man is quite dour and cuts a quite opposing figure. he is known to be a harsh critic and, thus, people are equal parts terrified and excited for him to visit their restaurants. a good review from him is rare, and little to nothing impresses him, except for that one specific meal made the specific way his mother made it.

your person is kind of like this. nothing truly impresses them. in some ways, they have been jaded, but it may be more so that they do not care about things like that. and that they lose respect for people who try hard to impress others instead of being authentic to themselves.

if you do anything with the sole intent to impress your person they would actually only lose respect for you. they would think of you as a poser. so just be your authentic self!

you should be more focused on making yourself proud. on doing things that make you, “i impress myself, i amaze myself.”

how impressed you are with yourself is far more important than how impressed this person is with you.

stop curating your life to impress others -- especially not to curate this specific person on your mind -- just be natural and live true to yourself. this is how you will leave your mark. this is how the right people will, of course, be impressed.

⚠️Hey, so this may be very (VERY) urgent:⚠️

So, I don’t normally do this, but something urgent came up, and I really need y’all to read this. There’s a TL;DR at the bottom of this post, but I strongly advise reading this post all the way through to gain more context on the situation at hand.

I don’t know all the details, but there’s this act floating around in the US called the “Kid’s Online Safety Act” - or KOSA , if you will. Here’s a description of it:

In summary, this law, if put in place, would aim to wipe out sites that could provide youth with life-saving resources, or even mention topics related to the LGBTQIA+ community and suicide prevention.

Now, obviously this is only a thing in America, so you’d think it wouldn’t affect the rest of the world, right?

Well, not exactly.

So you know how fandom sites such as Tumblr, AO3 and Wattpad provide an escape for many people across the world who are going through hard times (to put it simply)? I don’t mean to scare anyone, but if this law passes, these sites may be negatively affected globally.

Here’s a TikTok I found by a creator known as omarsbigsister that explains it better. It’s mainly about AO3 but Tumblr and Wattpad are mentioned too:

We all know why fandom is so important. Many people, as I’ve mentioned, use sites such as the ones previously listed to escape the troubles of their everyday life. In addition, fanfiction sites in particular provide creative outlets for writers across the globe. This law could possibly destroy this form of escapism and a creative outlet.

I’ve linked a link tree found in the above TikTok creator’s link tree at the bottom of this post. Please sign them regardless of where you’re from.

Also, y’all know I usually don’t ask for clicks, but interacting with this post in some way or even making a post of your own like this to spread the word would also be of great help!

We have to stop KOSA from being passed. The lives of America’s youth and future of fandom depend on it.

I’m gonna keep it short but hi! I’m gonna try to be more active on here just posting art and thoughts and just sort of talking about life and stuff. But here’s the deal, I only want to make one donation post that I pin so anyone who feels generous enough to help us can, but to boil it down we are very poor and unemployed. We keep getting fucked over one way or another. We are trans sex workers just trying to make it you know how it is. Here’s a short list of things we need money for as we currently have $20 to our collective names.

•car payment//rent//kratom and weed (we have recently gotten off fentanyl this year and I don’t smoke weed because I’m schizophrenic but my girlfriends do for their chronic pain and we all need kratom as a means to self medicate off of fent)//savings! (We are a lot of people in a small shitty apartment with several to a room and we really want to move to a bigger place. There’s bigger housing available that is much nicer for about the same rent as where we live now, but it costs to move because of fees and having to have multiple months rent and security deposit and such, also my room mate is trying to get his child back and can’t do that with us in this apartment just because of the lack of room and our lifestyle. Absolutely no hard feelings he is amazing and and an amazing dad who just wants a place where his kid can be, so I also want to be able to give him a fair amount before we go so he can get his stuff in order and keep the apartment hopefully)//getting the car checked (it’s fucked up man)//my girlfriends cannabis license

Hey guys as you may have heard Ao3 has been down because of an attack against the website. I don’t know who’s behind it but I’ve been hearing somethings that Russia is behind all of this but I really don’t know.

I feel very violent rn

I just hope the volunteers are ok and are finding ways to defend against these attacks because this is especially hard for them and it sucks that they have to deal with people like this. Remember that if ao3 comes back up remember to donate and thank the volunteers for putting up with this and fixing this website for us.

Also congress is currently debating on bills to try and make kids safer which sounds good right?

What they don’t tell you is that these bills involves a lot of censorship and privacy issues.

Some child safety groups like design it for us might be currently lobbying for bills like KOSA (KidsOnlineSafetyAct)

This bill would give more power to politicians to decide what people could see and may also have age verification as well

I’ve also been hearing that they could put this bill in a package along with the EARNIT act

Please guys call your senators and representatives to oppose these censorship bills

Email them, call them , fax them! There is also petitions and link trees you could sign as well

GUYS I'M CACKLING, LOOK WHAT A PALESTINE GOFUNDME SCAM ACCOUNT SENT ME AFTER I CALLED THEM OUT- (btw please look at the entire post so you're aware of the situation, more below)

Breaking News! Filthy scammer gets angry they got caught!

I hope every last penny they've stolen is wiped from their account. They won't even see that because the Tumblr is gone but, the message is the same for all scammers. Fuck off, get help. You're sick and disgusting.

Here is the real GoFundMe page

Scammers on here (and possibly on other platforms, but I simply don't know for sure) continue to steal the story and images found on this GoFundMe and instead link personal PayPal accounts through linktree's titled "GoFundMe".

From my observations they mostly target ask boxes, and literally just copy paste their pinned post, which again, is just the stolen info from the real GoFundMe with the names changed. They also reblog Palestine related posts to try and make their blog more believable.

It is possible that other stolen stories may begin circulating

I've only seen Yasmeen's info being used, but others may start trying to use other families experiences as they start getting caught(if they haven't started already). That's why it's very important to investigate things like this. They spread like wildfire, and that's how scammers take advantage of real people in need.

I would say to tread very carefully and look for inconsistencies or things that seem suspicious. Like the linktree link. I have copy/pasted the entire stories into a search engine(which is how I found the real GoFundMe) to check as well. There are many more posts (much more informational, and widespread than this one) on the topic, and I ask you to please check them out. Please stay informed and aware of potential scammers, and think before you reblog!!

Let's start off with introductions. Hi, I'm Ultra! If you're seeing this you probably already know who I am and what I do: I am an independent artist and pin maker living in sunny California, I make eldritch angel pins and other merch.

Hello! I hope this isn't an annoying question (I promise I'm not about to say something horrible or bigoted - I'm just shy and therfore anonymous), but I'd like to have your advice on how to go about informing people about the genocide in Palestine.

Most people that I know in-person have (quite literally) zero information about any of it, and I have no idea where to even start when informing them. It's hard to summarize everything that's been going on without overloading them with tons of information - or even boring them because I explained it poorly. Many of them have that mindset of "oh, this is bad, but there's nothing we can do," and I'd like to inform them as well as motivate them to advocate for Palestine themselves.

These are great sources here for you to reference and/or share with the people you know in-person who would like to learn more about Palestine, from past to current, but also as a reference for you to feel more confident/comfortable talking about topics that you know about/have learned about. This is by no means extensive, but it is something I can share to give you a starting point.

I can't say I have the perfect response, but letting them know, first and foremost, you don't have to be an expert to understand that what is happening to Palestinian people is mass ethnic cleansing, and that the Israeli Occupational Forces (the IOF) are committing war crimes. If this was happening to any western/European country there would be a global outrage -like even recently Biden referred to what Putin was/is doing to Ukraine was genocide, but the systematic killing of nearly 30,000 Palestinian people is not?

And to emphasize -if they feel like nothing can be done or even after they understand/have acknowledged what is happening, you can encourage them to look into boycotting (as many Palestinian activists and allies have said -it's the least we can do), because it has been working in varying different capacities. Here is a helpful resource to look into and share with them directly if you are taking your time to go through some of the link I directed you to:

I am also nowhere near an expert on these topics, and there are plenty of Palestinian creators here and elsewhere that I follow that make content talking about Palestine that you also can look at as well (some of them are included here).

I hope this offers some more clarity, and I know there may be tough conversations ahead -and it may depend on context, but whenever I'm addressing global issues with people who don't know about what I'm talking about I usually start with "did you know about..." and if they're not receptive to something I say "do you realize what you said can come across as 'x'" and that 'x' being either insensitive, racist, sexist, xenophobic/whatever they said that is problematic. Turning the onus on them to answer for their bigotry of ignorance, and then being able to educate/inform them.

It's also never the responsibility of Palestinian people, or any person/community being oppressed by a settler/imperial/colonial force both* (fixed a typo!) currently and having a history of such to 'explain' their oppression -so please if they do look outside of the recommendations I've made, please tell them no person who has/experiences marginalization/systematic oppression has to educate them about their suffering (there are some exceptions, but my bottom line is if you don't know then do your own research). It's inappropriate and can be traumatizing/re-traumatizing to many. I'm not saying that's the case for you, but learning/unlearning is something we're all doing, and unless we attend a conference/watch a documentary/are engaging with content they create, then please be mindful of this.
