He's mine!
Tw: bad writing, sight obsessive behavior?, mentions of someone sitting on someone else's lap, an OC, unestablished romantic relationship, not beta read (because I don't have anyone lol)
Seeing Charlie woo the girls made Vanessa's blood boil, he was supposed to be her's not theirs. When he asked the other dead poets pledges to check out the "poets garden" she was out of there near immediately, her skirt swishing as she got out of the cave quickly. She walked away from the boys trying not to dissolve into bitter tears
"Don't cry you're not a baby Vanessa"
Vanessa says to herself quietly. When someone grabbed her shoulder she spun around about to take her anger out on them but it was Meeks, sweet reliable Meeks
"Hey Meeks what do you need?"
She asked before wiping her face
"Are you ok Vanessa?"
He asked her "Yeah just things." She replied before wrapping her coat closer around her
"It's freezing out here! Why did Charlie kick us out!"
She rants
"I'm stopping them!"
She says indignantly and barges into the cave to find the blonde girl Tia? Tina? Whatever her name was perched on Charlie's lap and she coughs interrupting
"We have to go Charlie we'll get caught"
Vanessa says before turning her heel and walking out, a slight grin on her pale face Vanessa 1 Charlie 0 . She walked back to Welton, quietly talking with the other boys
"That's bull!"
Vanessa jeered at Cameron before they got quiet as they walked to the dorms
"See ya"
Vanessa whispers before shutting her dorm door and leaning against the solid oak. One day she would be happy with Charlie as her boyfriend

Welton Academy, VT
4/16/60
It had been four months to the day since Charlie found out about Neil. Not so long ago he had experienced the best four months of his life. To think he had just gone through four months of his worst was mind numbing in a way he couldn’t comprehend. So he let this thought consume him as he took a bus to the ferry and then the ferry to another bus just to be met with the large metal gate he thought he would never have to see again.
He didn’t have to call and ask if they’d be here. He knew they would. Easter wasn’t a big enough Holiday for the parents to pull them out of school. The most they’d have to attend was Easter service tomorrow and classes would be back on schedule on Tuesday. That meant Charlie had all of this weekend to come to terms with what his life was becoming. Come to terms to who he was without Welton or Neil.
Considering he was expelled he didn’t know the proper etiquette for visiting the school. He didn’t care to know anyway so he snuck in, something he had done hundreds of times before and made his way through the empty halls and passing all the familiar rooms. It was weird being back here when he thought it wouldn’t be. That he would always be a part of this school somehow or another. It was still weird to think he wasn’t. This thought scared him as he knocked softly on the safest door.
“Charlie!” Meeks surprised voice squeaked as his eyes widened at the sight of him. Charlie quickly lifted his finger to shush him, pushing him inside as he stepped into the room and out of sight of any teachers eyes. It’s possible he was allowed to visit but based on the terms he left, he didn’t want to bother to find out he wasn’t.
“Hey Meeks” he grinned softly, the happiness of seeing his friend outweighing the sadness burrowed deep inside. When Meeks finally realized this isn’t a hallucination he hugs him quickly.
“Pittsie” Charlie nods at the boy who gapes at him from his desk, standing to hug him as well. Charlie already feels the heavy tears burning against the back of his eyes as he holds his two friends.
“What’re you doing here?” Pitts asks once they pull away and Charlie offers his familiar smirk, one that had become so foreign over the last few months, as he sets his suitcase down.
“Ridge gives their students the entire week off and since my parents figure I’m staying on campus to keep up with my studies, I figured I’d come here. See my best pals” Charlie explains, leaving out the very grave detail he did intend on staying at Ridge, all up until the girl he loved looked at him with eyes as cold as the dead of winter.
“We gotta get Todd and Knox” Meeks starts for the door and Charlie doesn’t stop him, laughing lightly as his red-headed friend takes off on his mission. Charlie hates how familiar and foreign everything around him feels when not so long ago his presence here wouldn’t have been such a big deal. It doesn’t take long for Meeks to return, the two boys barreling behind him just to see if Meeks speaks the truth.
“Holy shit” is all Knox can say when he finally spots him, wrapping his arms around him in a large hug. Charlie laughs at the excitement, hugging him back just as enthusiastically.
“Knoxie, how’s Chris?” Charlie smirks and Knox just smiles, softly shaking his head. He snuck out any chance he could to meet the beautiful blonde girl and risked being killed by Chet Danbury everyday, but man was it worth it.
“Still a dream” he grins, cheeks flushed because somehow he was able to keep his dream girl through all of this. Charlie just smiles back, nodding his head because he knows a thing or two about falling head over heels for a girl now. He’s brought back to reality when he spots Todd who stays standing in the doorway, eyeing him as if he looked away Charlie would somehow disappear.
“Todd, heard you started a revolution” Charlie grins that familiar smile at him and all the times Todd imagined seeing his face again it was nothing like this. Yet to see it in person again felt like being wrapped in a warm hug.
“Ah I learned from the best” Todd says after a beat, waving a hand as if to brush off the sentiment but it doesn’t make Charlie any less proud as he pulls the boy into a tight hug and ruffles the blonde hair on his head.
“Who would’ve thought quiet old Todd would grown a pair” Charlie says when he lets him go, the teasing tone not matching the adoration in his eyes. Not so long ago he thought of Todd as Neil’s quiet roommate and now he was considerably his best friend.
“It was a one time thing, one more stunt and I’m out like you Nuwanda” Todd teases back and Charlie just laughs, moving and flopping onto Meeks bed.
“That’s not a bad thing” Charlie jokes, hands motioning upward as he relaxed against the cushions. It was still a dorm bed but it was better than two buses and a ferry.
“How’s Ridge? How’s the girls?” Knox asks, eyebrows wiggling with suggestion as the boys all begin to settle around the room and catch up.
“Ridge sucks. I’m on track because I didn’t sign up for any sports in time and they made me take it anyway. As for the curriculum it’s the same old boring shit and Dr. J Evans Pritchard” Charlie sneers, thinking of that God forsaken school they stuck him in. Before Keating he might’ve actually liked to go there and experience co-ed but now it was cruel punishment made to diminish his spirit even more.
“And the girls? Pitts inquires, not missing how Charlie skipped over the little fact in his spiel.
“Fine I guess, my girlfriend is pretty pissed at me right now though” and gasps quickly come from each of the guys around the room as Charlie drops this bomb.
“It’s Evelyn, isn’t it?” Meeks asks, knowing she was the female lead in every story Charlie told when he called. It would be the only thing to make any sense.
“Yes it’s Evelyn” Charlie confirms, rolling his eyes even though just mentioning her name makes his heart soar. Leaving on the bad terms that they did hurt him, but she was still who he wanted to comfort him.
“Got a picture hot shot?” Todd asks and Charlie chuckles, leaning to his side in order to reach the wallet in his back pocket. When he finally frees it, he flips it open to pull out the photos they just recently got back from the Valentine’s dance. How he convinced her to take it he wasn’t sure but he was sure glad they did.
“Wow” Pitts breathes as the picture slips between his fingers and for the first time since Neil’s death a real smirk graces Charlie’s lips. Not a fake one or a forced one, a real one. Pride swells in his chest and it’s the first time he’s had this feeling in a very long time. As the boys pass around the picture of his girl Charlie can’t help but smile at each one.
“Only Charles could bag a chick like that” Meeks says while shaking his head and passing back the picture of the gorgeous girl in Charlie’s arms.
“She’s not a chick” Charlie corrects, slipping the picture safely back into his wallet. “She’s amazing though. Not shy at all and always calls me on my shit. I tried to stay away, I really did. I just couldn’t help myself”
“That doesn’t surprise me” Knox jokes and Charlie glares half heartedly as he looks back at each of the boys.
“How’d you get her to date you?” Meeks asks, curious as to how Charlie actually found a decent girl and not a ditz like the ones he brought to the cave that one time.
“Not sure to be honest, one night I knew she was alone and snuck into her room. Just couldn’t stop myself, she’s the best” Charlie says, mind still stuck on how sweet her kisses are and the taste of her lips.
“Well when do we get to meet her?” Knox eagerly asks, having been the only one of the group to ever actually share words with the girl even if they were brief.
“I don’t know, she’s pretty upset with me right now” Charlie sighs, mind still reeling and trying to wrap around what happened not so long ago. The catalyst to even bring him here.
“What’d you do?” Pitts asks with a snort, picturing the old Charlie doing some idiotic stunt to get him in trouble. If only that was the case.
“You didn’t tell her” Todd suddenly mutters and Charlie’s eyes lock onto his own, sharing a look foreign to the others around him.
“Yeah and she found out. I don’t blame her honestly. She probably thinks I was using her and she knows nothing about me which in a way she doesn’t. Neil was apart of every aspect of my life and if it included him, I didn’t bring it up” the boys realize what they mean in an instant, realization flooding across each of their faces.
“But why, Neil was your best friend?” Meeks says, head shaking and trying to understand the boy in front of them. To be honest none of them have gone as long as they have without seeing the boy before. Maybe things weren’t entirely as they seemed.
“He is my best friend. That’s why I can’t. How do I not only admit to myself but everyone around me that he’s actually gone. I’m all alone now. I’m stuck in that school with no one who understands me and I hate everything about it. I’m no longer Nuwanda, I’m barely even Charlie” Charlie gasps, eyebrows furrowed and heart straining in his chest. The boys watch him, words getting desperate at they come out and Charlie begins to feel that familiar tightening in his chest, the panic rising up his spine.
“You’re not alone Charlie” Todd says with the shake of his head and all the boys eye the two, waiting to see what either one of them would say.
“I am Todd, you guys got to stay here with each other but I was left to grieve on my own” Charlie says but Todd stays firm on his sentence, staring Charlie down with a confidence he never expected to posses.
“No you’re not. You have Evelyn and if I’m not mistaken a few other people at that school. You may not have know them long but four months is enough time to care for a person. I should know” Todd says, words sharp and strong and Charlie freezes as these words sink in. Up until Neil died they had only known Todd four months and he was just as important. So why couldn’t the kids at Ridge be the same.
“Shit Todd, I didn’t mean it like that” Charlie starts but Todd is shaking his head, stopping him short and Charlie waits for him to speak again.
“Just don’t count them out. If you push away every person in your life only because they didn’t know you before Neil then you’re bound to be lonely forever” Todd says and Charlie nods, wrapping his head around the fact that the very people at Ridge he had come to love were more important than he thought.
Not only was Evelyn important to him but the rest were too. Nate was his roommate and the only person he had let close since Neil. Marty was kind, looking out for him any chance he got. Laurie was funny and defended him when necessary. Violet was honest and would tell him the truth when he needed it most. Evelyn was understanding, and passionate about everything around her. They were beautiful people and he had spent so long pitying himself he never got a chance to fully enjoy it. He could see Neil now, almost cursing him for not allowing people close. He was Charlie Dalton for God sakes, a legend who had spent so long pretending he wasn’t.
“Neil didn’t die to kill your spirit, he died because he lost his own. So we should spend everyday making sure we enjoy it. Not only enough for ourselves but him too” Knox says and Charlie tries his best not to cry all over again. He had never looked at it like this, never allowed himself to think about the fact he was wasting so much time waiting for something that would never happen. Neil to come back.
“God I did fuck up” Charlie groans, hands reaching up to tug at his hair and the other boys laugh even though there is a layer of sadness now filling the room that they all figured would never leave.
“No you didn’t, you’re Charlie Dalton after all. You’ll find a way to make it up to her” Knox encourages, hand reaching to pat the boys back and Charlie chuckles, mind already trying to come up with ideas on how to make it up to all of them.
“Maybe but until then I think I just need to spend some time here. Finally let myself heal” he says and the boys nod, understanding exactly what he means. At first it was hard being at Welton without either of the boys, rules becoming more strict and classes becoming harder. Yet after a while it became healing. Classrooms holding memories like a time capsule that comforted them in a way nothing else could.
It was little things. Like learning Shakespeare in class which would remind them of how amazing Neil was in the play. When it was meatloaf for dinner they could eat it remembering it was his favorite. When they scored goals in soccer they could still hear Neil cheering. He was everywhere within the school, a permanent reminder in its walls and even if the memories sometimes hurt, at least somewhere on this earth still held the spirit of him. Welton and this town would forever hold the spirit of him and that was better than any comfort any of the boys had known.
“That’s a good idea, we can hide you in our rooms and go and visit Neil” Pitts voices his excitement and the boy freeze, waiting to see Charlie’s reaction. It had become common for them to visit Neil’s grave but Charlie hadn’t since the funeral. Charlie didn’t even know it was something they did.
“I would love that, even more if no one mentions my presence to Cameron” Charlie responds with his cool and confident tone that for the first time felt right to still have. The boys just laugh, nodding their heads in agreement.
“We can manage that” Meeks says and Charlie grins, sitting up and finally feeling more of him falling back into place. Maybe Nate was right after all, just being here was already healing him. He wished he could stay forever. Thing was, as much as he didn’t want to admit it, life goes on. So he needed to spend as much time as he could, remembering not to forget that.
“Good now one of you needs to sneak into the finks room and recover my stash”

All is Pain in Poetry, But, Oh, The Play Goes On.
Tumblr media
A Dead Poet’s Society Fanfiction story!
Charlie Dalton x Female!OC
Type : This is a *full on* story, I plan to do many, many, chapters worth. It will definitely include plenty of fluff, angst, and smut, for it will follow the lines of the Movie itself, with several of my own added scenes.
OC : Jane is British, she has a Londoner’s accent, which you learn anyhow, but I thought you should know. She is the only girl to attend Welton, yes, but there is logical *kinda* reason behind it! (No, she is not the relative of Mr Nolan, or the Captain) You’ll simply have to read to find out :)
Summary : Jane has never quite known a life of peace. Between the terribly kept lies of her Father’s own doing, the discovery of such mistruth, and the pressure of a bitterly controlled adolescence, Jane is forced to obtain her life by a script of her Father’s hand.
With no choice but to remain a student at Welton Academy, forbidden friendships begin to bloom, often tinted with that of a sweet romance - and perhaps life is a little more bearable than she first thought. Especially with the new, albeit a little wacky, English teacher - his tongue dripping in sugar, his words something Gods could envy - to stir things up, just that little bit more.
Perhaps there is worth in living, and not just surviving, after all; for all is pain in poetry, but, oh, the play goes on.
Author’s Note : Yes I’m aware that the title of this story is unnecessarily long but I like it😔 Hope you enjoy! The chapters will be as lengthy as I feel like making them (usually over like 10k a pop, maybe) and I’ll update whenever I can!
Carpe Diem motherfuckers✨
Chapter One, Chapter Two, Chapter Three, etc, etc...

Dead Poets Society: Neil x OC: part 11
masterlist
complete series
The next morning, I wake up to see Neil has already woken up and is straightening his clothes given that both of us had fallen asleep cuddling in their own clothes.
Neil turns to see I’ve woken up: ‘Good morning beautiful, come on we gotta go.’
‘Hmm, 5 more minutes’, I mumble, causing Neil to chuckle as he sits down on the edge of the bed. He reaches his hand out and strokes my cheek. I lean into it, still a bit sleepy.
The professors hurry down the steps of the chapel, lead by an obviously agitated Mr. Nolan. Several of the professors are carrying newspapers in their hands. All of us students rise as they enter. After all the professors have taken their places, Mr. Nolan addresses us, ‘Sit.’ And we oblige. ‘In this week of Welton's Honor there appeared a profane and unauthorized article. Rather than spend my valuable time ferreting out the guilty persons - and let me assure you I will find them - I'm asking any and all students who knows anything about this article to make themselves known here and now. Whoever the guilty persons are, this is your only chance to avoid expulsion from this school.’
Then suddenly we hear a phone ringing. I can see the professors look about for its source, then everyone sees Charlie pick up a telephone receiver.
‘Welton Academy. Hello’, he states grinning, ‘Yes, he is. Just a moment. Mr. Nolan, it's for you. It's God. He says we should have girls at Welton.’ Most of the students laugh while the boys from the cave and I all shake their heads in disbelief.
Not many moments later he was dragged away by Mr Nolan. We were all dismissed to our rooms. There the boys and I all waited in Todds and Neils room silently. Neil sat on his bed, with me on his lap and his arms around my waist as he lays his head down on my shoulder and mine leans against his. Only when we hear some mumbling and shuffling in the hallway all of us get up. There we see Charlie stiffly walking back to his room. Neil was the first to talk, ‘You kicked out?’
‘No.’
‘So what happened?’ He asks carefully.
‘I'm to turn everybody in, apologize to the school and all will be forgiven’, Charlie states still not looking at us.
‘So, what are you gonna do?’ Neil asks, not getting an answer, ‘Charlie!’
‘Damn it, Neil’ Charlie smiles and then shuts his door, ‘The name is Nuwanda.’
Charlie sits with his bongos as the other boys and me are all crowded around him. He hits the bongos as he mimes Nolan's footsteps. I sit on Neils lap while Charlie talks. His arms are around my waist, his chin on my shoulder.
‘Creak. He started walking around towards my left. Creak. Creak. "Assume the position, Mr. Dalton."’ Then the door opens to reveal my dad. Many of the boys get up from their seats. ‘It's all right, gentlemen.’ Motioning to them that they can remain seated.
‘Mr. Keating’, Charlie smiles.
‘Mr. Dalton. That was a pretty lame stunt you pulled today.’
‘You're siding with Mr. Nolan?’ Charlie question, ‘What about Carpe diem and sucking all the marrow out of life and all that?’
‘Sucking the marrow out of life doesn't mean choking on the bone’, My dad explains, ‘Sure there's a time for daring and there's a time for caution, and a wise man understands which is called for.’
‘But I thought you'd like that’, Charlie states disappointed.
‘No. You being expelled from school is not daring to me. It's stupid, 'cause you'll miss some golden opportunities.’
‘Yeah. Like what?’ Charlie states sarcastically.
‘Like, if nothing else, the opportunity to attend my classes. Got it, Ace?’
‘Aye, aye, Captain’, Charlie states smiling slightly.
‘Keep your head about you’, he tells Charlie before glancing over to the rest of us, his eyes momentarily stopping when he sees me and Neil, I am vaguely aware of the way we’re still sitting, and I can feel my cheeks heat up, ‘That goes for the lot of you.’
‘Yes, Captain.’
‘Phone call from God’, my dad mumbles to himself, ‘If it had been collect, it would’ve been daring.’ The boys laugh. As my dad leaves, the rest of the boys gather around Charlie once again.
‘All right. Go on’, one of them says
Since Neil was at the play’s practice this morning, I spent the majority of my day, reading in my room. When the bell finally rang for dinner, I speed of to Neils dorm, knowing he’ll be back by now.
‘What's for dinner?’ I can hear a boy ask as the lot of them speed through the hall.
‘Spaghetti and meatballs!’ Pittsie yells in answer. Then I see Neil come up the stairs as everyone else swarms down to the cafeteria. ‘Save some for me’, I hear him say to some of the boys before he sees me walking to him, ‘Hello my love’, he smiles as he embraces and kisses me, ‘"But, room, Fairy! Here comes Oberon."’ he recites as both of us walk to his room. He opens the door to his room and there we see... his father sitting at his desk.
‘Father’, Neil states shocked.
‘Neil’, Mr Perry states shortly.
‘Wait a minute’, Neil asks hastily, ‘Before you say anything, please let me ex-’
Mr. Perry rises from the desk. ‘Young lady would you please leave us’, he states, interrupting his son. I look over at Neil, slightly concerned. His eyes are fixed on his dad, but he nods. I squeeze his hand one more time before letting go. I reach my hand out for Mr Perry to shake, ‘Good to meet you, Mr Perry.’ to which he shakes my hand shortly: ‘You as well.’
With that I leave the room, and when I do, I immediately hear Neil start to get scolded. I have to use all my self control not to turn around.
‘Where is Neil?’ the boys ask as I join them at the table.
‘His father is in his room’, I say, my voice seems distant, as if I’m talking underwater.
With that none of us really say anything anymore.
After dinner, I go to look for Neil, but I couldn’t find him anywhere. As I finally walk my way to my dads office to ask if he’s seen him anywhere, I can see Neil just exiting the office. The first thing I notice are his eyes, they are bloodshot, and I know that he’s been crying.
‘Neil?’ I call out, making my way over to him, ‘What happened?’ My voice causes Neils head to snap up, the look in his eyes seems disoriented, and even a little… panicked. I lightly put my hands on his sides. ‘Can we – can we go talk in your room please?’ he stammers quietly. I nod and we make our way to my dorm. Once we’re there we sit down on my bed.
‘What did he say?’ I ask, ‘Your dad?’
‘He said I was going out of control’, he says quietly, not looking at me, ‘Dating girls, doing plays behind his back. He wants me to quit the play.’
‘Are you?’
‘No’, he says, finally turning to me, ‘I went to talk to your dad, he says I have to talk to my dad, make him understand what acting means to me and … make him understand how much you mean to me.’ he reaches his hand out to stroke my cheek before he places it on the back of my neck and pulling me to him into a passionate kiss. It actually surprised me, since it was more passionate and demanding than usual.
He pulls me onto his lap suddenly, this causes my hips to accidentally move against his,. He groans, placing his hands on my hips to keep me there, slowly sliding his hands up and down to my thighs.
‘Evangeline’, he mumbles as we pull away momentarily, ‘I-I…’
‘Hmm?’ I open my eyes slightly and see Neil has a light blush on his cheek.
‘I want to be with you tonight’, he tells me as his hands slide up to my hips, then under my sweater to stroke my sides, ‘If you’ll let me.’
Tumblr media
When I catch on to what he mean, I blush, but nod ‘Yes.’ he smiles at me before pecking my lips once again. He gently pulls my sweater over my head before putting his hands on my hips again. Then he starts to kiss me again, first my lips, then he moves down to my cheek, then my jaw where he whispers in my ear: ‘Are you sure?’ As he asks this his hands slide down to my butt and squeezes lightly as he continues to kiss and bit my neck. ‘Yes’, I say, gasping at the sudden action.
Neil looks back up at me. I can see love in his eyes, it makes me smile. He kisses my lips again, puts one of his arms around the small of my back, slowly and gently laying me down on his bed. He uses his other arm to hold himself up. The arm that was around me, slides up and down my sides before sliding it up the hem of my shirt, all the while still kissing me.
The next morning I open my eyes to see Neil already out of bed. I yawn and stretch slightly: ‘Come back to bed.’
Neil turns to me smiling: ‘I would love to, but I can’t. It’s the last practice before the premier tonight.’ He comes over to me to kiss my forhaed before getting back up and asking: ‘Have you seen my- … are you wearing my sweater?’
‘Maayyybeee’, I smile.
He chuckles slightly, sitting back down on the edge of my bed and leaning close to my ear: ‘You’re lucky you look good in my clothes.’
His statement causes me to blush a bright red and when he sees this, I can see him smirk. He leans in to kiss me one more time before leaving.

Dating in a private school could be difficult. Evelyn had listened to Violet complain about it for years but until now she hadn’t realized how true it was. It had been a month of dating Charlie and every day people still gave her a hard time and she felt like neither of them had any privacy. Even the dates at the cafe on campus didn’t feel real due to so many peering eyes. It was like animals in a zoo and Evelyn was tired of it. Especially since she still felt like she was getting to know Charlie. There was still so much there he hadn’t given her access too and she partly blamed it on this damn school.
So she had been grumpy. Which wasn’t usual for the girl but she was just annoyed. Sick and tired of waiting for the world to finally let her have and enjoy something for once. She finally found someone she enjoyed being with and liked, so why the hell couldn’t the universe provide her with a break? Allow her a chance to date her first boyfriend like every girl should. Not with the overlooking eyes but with an innocence that comes with experiencing all the things you hadn’t before.
“If you’re not careful your face’ll get stuck like that” Charlie muttered, leaning toward her on the couch and rubbing a thumb over the crease between her brows. Evelyn’s face instantly softened, heart yearning for the boy beside her.
“I’m sorry” she told him, legs shifting in his lap. The library had become a sort of safe haven for the two, cradling their budding love between the stacks of hundreds of books. At first Evelyn thought it was romantic but now she just felt annoyed that this was the only place she felt any privacy with the boy beside her.
“Don’t be, what’s on your mind?” the chestnut haired boy asks and Evelyn sighs, head leaning back against the couch.
“I just wish we could be alone” she tells him and Charlie chuckles, eyes glancing around the semi empty space around them.
“We are alone” he says and she groans, head shaking against the back of the cushions, brunette tresses falling in all directions.
“No I mean alone away from this school. I feel like everywhere we go there is someone we know. Relationships shouldn’t be so monitored” Evelyn counters and Charlie gives a understanding look because he knows exactly what she means. Even now there is a librarian twenty feet away and if he sneaks into her room at night it’s only bound to be interrupted by Violet or her be there the entire time. When he had wanted girls to attend Welton he had never considered the watchful eye factor, people like Nolan and Mr. McAllister watching your every move. He could see himself now sneaking his girl out to the old Indian Cave just to get some alone time, and then it hit him.
"What if we just left campus" he says and a shocked look paints Evelyn's face quickly.
"We can't, not without written permission from a parent and I don’t know about your parents but mine would definitely not sign off on me running around with a boy" she defends quickly and Charlie laughs, pulling her closer and hoping the librarian doesn't look up to bust them both.
"I didn't say anything about asking for permission" he grins, mischief sparkling in his eyes and the gears finally start turning in her head. It wouldn't be impossible. A few right moves and they both could be off and into the night, returning in the mask of the dark, and no one would know a thing.
"Okay, let's do it" she agrees quickly and he smiles wide, squeezing her as he presses a soft kiss to the side of her head.
"What do you say about 7:30, meet past the gate and behind the tree line?" and the nerves start to bubble in Evelyn's stomach but she smiles and agrees anyway.
"Perfect, but now I have to get ready!" and before Charlie could protest, Evelyn was up and out of her seat, scurrying in the direction of the dorms so she could get dressed for her first very real date. Sighing he leans back into the couch, a smile on his face from how much he adored her. Only once in a while did he feel despair about getting so close when he had promised himself not to. Those were only during the dark moments though, the moments where he couldn't stop his mind from thinking about how much he would miss her if she suddenly went away and then those thoughts would bring him right back to Neil. He wished he had appreciated him more when he was here. With this thoughts now swirling in his head he did the one thing that always made him feel better.
"Yeah, hi. I'm calling for Todd Anderson" Charlie said once the phone line picked up and whatever twelve year old blazer boy answered was off in search of his meek friend that could be the only one to calm him down during this time.
"Hello" Todd said after a few moments, voice coming out staticky from the phone and hundred miles inbetween them.
"Hey Todd, it's Charlie" he responded quickly, trying to keep his voice even as he tried to get the panic and sadness to go away.
"Hey Charlie, what’s going on? It's not Wednesday" Todd said, confusion laced in his voice and Charlie chuckled, a little sad because he could picture exactly what the boys face looked like right now. The overbearing weight of wanting to be back at Welton swallowing him whole. How torn the world must be if he still wished he was back at that dreaded school.
"I know, it's just- I have a date tonight" Charlie spoke softly and Todd grinned wide on the other end. The image of his overcondienct and cocky friend coming to mind. The one he knew, not knowing the new person he had become.
"Hey that's awesome Charlie, is it Evelyn?" Todd questioned, coming to know the girl from how the boy had talked about her. He knew it would only be a matter of time before he couldn’t stop himself from going after her. Todd was starting to get used to always being right.
"Yeah it’s her, it's just-.." and Charlie clamped his mouth shut, suddenly feeling silly for feeling this way. He was Charlie Dalton for Christ sake, he was confident, smart, and a womanizer. Why would he be calling quiet Todd Anderson about it?
"You can tell me Charlie" Todd spoke, finally sensing the discomfort coming from the boy he hadn't seen in person since before Christmas. Charlie took a moment, collecting himself before responding.
“What if I get to close and lose her too?” He whispered, voicing his worries out loud for the very first time. Todd was taken aback, shocked to hear the words that just left his mouth. Then it dawned on him that Neil was Charlie’s best friend, the one guy who had been by his side for the entirety of his days at Welton. Todd had only known Neil four months for him to become important to him, he couldn’t imagine a lifetime. Neil had already been gone more than half the amount of time Todd had known him but for Charlie it was different. For Charlie it was losing the one real person who loved you your entire life.
“Does she know?” Todd asked, curious if Charlie had disclosed the tragic event that had all changed them entirely for the rest of their lives. Yet Charlie’s silence was enough of an answer in itself.
“No one does, well except my room mate. I just didn’t want it to define me” Charlie finally told him, realizing the weight in his chest he has been carrying this whole time over not grieving properly. He had yet to be comforted for the loss of his friend and that had made it hard to get over. Hard to move on.
“You should tell her, it won’t change anything but until you do, can she ever really begin to understand you?” and Charlie remembered exactly why he had called Todd in the first place. He had become his new voice of reason since Neil died and he knew the exact right thing to say.
“I just don’t want her to see me differently” Charlie admitted and Todd wished he was there to give his friend a hug. He remembered not liking Charlie much at first. He thought his outgoing spirit was dangerous and that it put him in a position to be targeted amongst the group. Yet he failed to notice just how loyal the boy was and now he wished that during the time they did spend together he got to know him better.
“You are different Nuwanda. What matters is if you own it” Todd told him and Charlie chuckled lightly, fighting the tears that burned at the back of his eyes.
“I’ll tell her when I’m ready, I promise” he finally said and Todd accepted this answer not wanting to push him too far, so he decided to leave him with just this.
“Just remember you may never be ready” Todd says knowing his own grief had changed him entirely as a man. He was still living out his punishment with Nolan. It was funny how Nolan used to be annoyed with how outspoken he was but the moment he speaks up he gets silenced.
“Thanks Todd, I’ll talk to you later” Charlie smiled, feeling much better than before about this date.
“Good luck” Todd bid him goodbye and then the receiver clicked before indicating the dead line and Todd was gone, leaving Charlie no choice but to get ready and face his fears.
It’s not long until 7:30 hits, Charlie had been hiding in the tree line since 7. Wanting to lessen the chances of both of them getting caught and take the time to prepare himself for a real date. He may have always been cool with the women but he had truly never been on a proper date before. Especially with a girl like Evelyn, she deserved to be swept off her feet. He jumps when the sound of a branch snapping fills his ears but he quickly calms when he sees the foot is one with a kitten heel and not loafers that belonged to a teacher ready to bust him.
“That was thrilling” Evelyn whispers despite not needing to. They were far enough away now that no one would be able to hear him. Yet her words don’t register in Charlies head because as his eyes move up from her feet they find leg. Lots and lots of leg until right at her knees he is met with baby blue tulle, the skirt making her look like an angel on a cloud. It gets even better when he meets the sweetheart neckline, strained over her chest and looking so inviting. The silver chain necklace around her neck makes him shiver. Finally his eyes meet her own, just in time to spot the grin she wears from watching him check her out.
“I’m beginning to regret this idea of going out and not staying in now” Charlie says, shifting a little as he prepared to approach her. Evelyn just shook her head and reached for him anyways, not giving him much choice in the matter.
“I already convinced Violet to stay in Marty’s room until at least 3am, so we have time” she whispers before pulling him close and capturing his lips in her own. Charlie hums as she kisses him soft and sweet, agonizingly slow and leaving him wanting more. “Right now I just want my boyfriend to take me on a date”
“Then let’s do it” Charlie smiles at her, stealing one more kiss before lacing his fingers through her own and starting them on the walk.
It takes only a mile before they’re met with the sight of town, one Charlie had only been in a handful of times since coming here. Evelyn takes lead on picking the restaurant considering she had been in Ridge much longer than he ever had. It’s no surprise when she picks the small diner opposed to somewhere nicer. People gave the pair looks walking in all dressed up just for some burgers and shakes but neither of them minded when they finally found a booth. Floor sticky and table greasy, it was perfect for two kids just beginning to fall in love.
“I’ve never been on a real date before?” Evelyn admits, taking the red and white stripe straw between her lips and taking a sip of her chocolate shake. Charlie just smiled, his own strawberry shake in his hand.
“You’re telling me none of those guys in that co-ed school snuck you off campus to take you on proper date?” He teases, voice full of amusement as he looks at her.
“No Charles, they haven’t. Yet that’s the thing about co-ed schools. The boys don’t understand to appreciate it more” she says, thinking about all the boys she grew up with who never learned to be gentlemanly or even nervous in her presence.
“Idiots, I didn’t talk to a girl until I was thirteen” Charlie says with the shake of his head, smiling as the waitress sets down burgers and fries for them both. He grins at the way Evelyn has one fry shoved in her mouth before it even hits the table.
“How come you’re not nervous around girls then?” Evelyn inquires, grabbing some salt to put on her fries and on Charlie’s before setting it down.
“I figured there was never any reason to be. If I wanted to have a fighting chance I couldn’t just gape at a girl like a fish, I had to snag her before some other idiot did” and Evelyn’s laughing loudly at the explanation, other customers looking over and chuckling at the young kids on their night out.
“Well lucky for you no other idiots in that school liked me and I learned to accept that a long time ago” Charlie’s stiffens as the words leave her mouth, thinking of his friend who was probably in their shared dorm wondering where the hell he was. His friend who was the only one to know anything about him here. If only Nate had said something before he had fallen for the girl but now it was far too late.
“Idiots indeed” Charlie agrees before grabbing his burger and taking a large bite. Evelyn just smiles, mimicking his movements and doing the same. When some mustard gets smeared on Charlies cheek she’s quick to giggle and wipe it away.
As the night progresses the conversation continues to flow, laughter and smiles filling the space between them. It’s not long until plates are empty and stomachs are full. At some point Charlie even ends up on Evelyn’s side of the booth, arm wrapped around her as he recalls tales from his Welton days. Evelyn particularly likes the ones about Knox and all the things he did to gain the attention of Chris. Sadly it was getting close to curfew so Charlie threw some cash on the table and led the girl out the booth and back in the dreaded direction of the school, feeling guilty for still not telling her the truth about his past.
“That was much easier than expected” Evelyn says, swinging their interlocked hands between them. Charlie just laughs, eyes glancing down at her in the moonlight.
“It’s not over yet, now we have to sneak back in” Charlie informs her and she just rolls her eyes, leaning closer to him the closer they get to the school.
“I almost don’t want to go back in” she says when the gate comes into view and Charlie glances at his watch, noting there still was just forty minutes until curfew. Before Evelyn can say anything more he has her pressed up against one of the trees and he doesn’t miss the sharp breath she takes in.
“Then let’s not, at least for a little bit” he tells her and before she can agree he has his lips on hers, tipping her head back and against the tree. Evelyn settles into the kiss fairly quickly, hands coming to rest on his chest. Charlie finds his own comfort in the kiss, keeping a hand at her waist and the other on her face, making sure she kept access for him. He loved how she still tasted faintly of chocolate shake and how she relaxed into his arms. He hadn’t kissed many girls in his lifetime but none of them could ever compare.
“That was the best first date” Evelyn mutters when he finally gives her a chance to breath, lips trailing down her neck and to the top of her chest that he could barely keep his eyes off of all night. When his fingers tangle into her necklace he finally begins to pull away.
“Agreed, what do you say we do it again?” and Evelyn giggles as his lips meet her neck again. Smiling she reaches to tangle her fingers in his hair and memorize this moment to keep in her heart forever.
“Anytime Charlie”

Getting Charlie to be social was still impossible even after his conversation with Evelyn in the gym. She tried and tried but she couldn’t get more than a few words and denial every time. She had started to run out of excuses to talk to him and she figured it wouldn’t happen for her. She’d never get to unravel the mystery of Charlie Dalton no matter how badly she wanted too. So she accepted that she would never find a reason to talk to him again until a miracle happened.
“Hello” Evelyn answered the pay phone in the hallway. The one that rang almost seconds after she got off call with her Mom.
“Hi, I was wondering if Charlie Dalton was available?” a boys voice came through the phone, it was slightly static and the way Evelyn’s heart doubled in speed made her realize she wasn’t entirely out of reason to talk to him.
“Um, I can check. Can I ask who’s calling?” Evelyn asked, trying her best not to sound too giddy through the phone.
“Tell him it’s Knox, he’ll know who” he responds and you smile even though he can’t see you.
“Yeah, give me just a minute. The boys dorms are a bit of a hike” Evelyn tells him and this so called Knox chuckles through the phone.
“Take your time” he says while she sets the phone down and starts jogging through the halls to a room she was all to familiar with. She doesn’t even knock, like usual. This time Nate’s pants are off, standing in front of his closet in boxers.
“Evelyn! Are you kidding?” he shouts, scrambling to pull on sweats and she snickers before her eyes glance to the boy laid in the corner.
“You got a call Charlie, some guy named Knox” and for the first time in both Nate and Evelyn’s lives they see a beaming smile cross the boys face. It was as if those few words had brought so much life back to him.
“Knoxie!” he grins, jumping from the bed and leaving the dorm without any shoes on.
“Knoxie?” Evelyn mutters to Nate and he shrugs as she shuts the door and rushes off in the direction Charlie is practically sprinting too.
“Knox Overstreet, it’s been too long” Charlie grabs the phone Evelyn had abandoned and she hears the adoration in his voice. How happy he is to receive a call from Knox Overstreet.
“I know man, I don’t think we’ve ever gone this long without seeing each other since we were ten” Knox responds over the line and Charlie feels tears pricking at his eyes. The happy kind though. When he was expelled his parents wouldn’t allow him any calls. He hadn’t talked to any of the boys since Neil’s funeral. The first thing he did when he got to Ridge was write a letter to each of the remaining poets letting them know the number of the school and where to address his letters. The boys must’ve just gotten them.
“I hate it” Charlie says which makes Knox laugh loudly on the other end. Class was never the same without Charlie causing trouble in them.
“Me too, you’ll be glad you’re not here though. Nolan’s really laid down law since you left. Todd pulled a stunt right before break and now he’s got us all on a short leash” Knox tells him and the shock and amusement that covers Charlie’s features shocks Evelyn who watches him talk more animated than she has ever seen him.
“Todd Anderson pulled a stunt, yeah right. Pigs also fly” Charlie says with a wide grin and glimmering eyes and Evelyn finds her heart constricting at the sight. She wanted him to smile at her like that.
“He did Charlie, swear on my life. Keating came to collect his things while Nolan was teaching our class and Todd actually stood on his desk and called out Oh Captain, my Captain. Nolan flipped and half the class stood on their desks too” Knox recalls the moment, all the emotions of respect and loss flooding through him when he stood on his own desk.
“No shit, little Todd grew a back bone” Charlie says, disbelief but also pride filling him. “How is Todd?”
“He’s okay. He misses Neil like most of us but he’s really come out of his shell. He told me he wrote you back so expect a letter from him soon” Knox informs him and Charlie feels more excitement surged through him at the thought of getting letters from his friends.
“Meeks and Pitts too? I haven’t heard from any of you guys in forever” Charlie says almost out of breath from his excitement.
“They’re good, actually got busted for building a new radio the other day. I swear Meeks almost cried” and Charlie’s laughing because he knows exactly what this all looks like. Those boys and that school had been his entire life. It was what he knew best.
“Tell him I’ll send him a new one, he deserves it” Knox chuckles at Charlie’s response, knowing that even confident and almighty Charlie had been bull dozed by the world.
“What about you Nuwanda, how’s Ridge Academy? Co-ed” the suggestion in Knox’s tone is not lost on Charlie. Thing was Charlie could never admit to Knox how reserved he had been. He’d probably never believe it.
“It’s okay, different for sure. I’m just trying to make it through” Charlie says, not knowing Evelyn still lingered and watched him for the entirety of his conversation.
“That doesn’t sound like Charlie, I would’ve thought you’d have twelve girlfriends by now” the obscure number makes Charlie laugh and he shakes his head.
“No, definitely no girlfriends. Cute girls though” this response makes Evelyn perk up beside him, curious if she was one of these so called cute girls.
“What about the one who answered the phone, she sounded cute?” Knox asks and Charlie sighs, thinking of Evelyn and how beautiful and different she was from any girl he’s ever met.
“Super cute” Charlie tells him, a soft smile on his face. If he was the man he used to be Evelyn would’ve been his by now. He’s sure of it.
“Then what the hell are you waiting for?” Knox asks exasperated and Charlie just chuckles, leaning his head against the wall next to the payphone. Still unaware of the small girl stood behind him, waiting patiently.
“The great Nuwanda has taken a leave of absence for the foreseeable future. No girls, no caves, no friends” Charlie says and this is more information Evelyn hadn’t been able to get out of him the entirety of the time he had been here.
“Well let me know when he’s back, I miss that guy” Knox says and Charlie smiles fondly of his eldest friend, other than Neil of course. Yet know he figures Knox takes that position.
“I will, I miss you Knoxie. Say hi to Chris for me and maybe I’ll get to see you soon” Charlie says, wishing more than anything he could see Knox now standing by the same phones he watched him call Chris on for the first time.
“I’d like that Charles, I’ll be in touch soon” and Charlie humphs his acknowledgment when the phone finally clicks indicating the end of the call. Sighing he hung his own phone up, feeling happier than he has in the last two months.
“Well that was unexpected” Evelyn’s voice makes Charlie jump and he quickly turns to spot the small girl who had to of been behind him the whole time.
“God, we need to put a bell on you” he says and Evelyn snorts.
“Hey don’t change the subject. What was that all about? You were smiling and laughing. Who was that guy?” Evelyn asks, crossing her arms and Charlie brings a hand to the back of his neck. He was a bit embarrassed but then again not at all. Talking to Knox was the highlight of his week.
“My friend Knox, back at Welton. It was my first time talking to him in two months so forgive me for being happy” Charlie says in defense and Evelyn nods as she takes this information in.
“I’m not saying you’re not allowed to be happy. Was just weird listening to you be so animated. So full of life. Talkative even” Evelyn points out and Charlie sighs as he starts down the hallway in direction of his dorm. He doesn’t have to check to know Evelyn is following him.
“Well I’m a very animated person, I just don’t care to show that around here” Charlie says shoving his hands in his pockets and Evelyn scurries to keep up with his long strides.
“But why? I mean God Charlie, that’s the guy I want to know. The one who was laughing and talking with his friend on the phone” Evelyn says, reaching for his arm in hopes to use his momentum to keep up with him. She’s surprised when he doesn’t shake her away and allows her arm to lock with his own.
“Look Evelyn, I don’t know what you want from me. You barely know me. I just choose to be lonely” he says and Evelyn stays silent for a moment, relishing in the heat that comes from his side.
“Who’s Nuwanda?” she suddenly asks after a moment and Charlie stiffens beside her which she notices.
“It’s just an inside joke with my friends” he’s not entirely lying but Evelyn just sighs and accepts this answer. He clocks the instant pout on her perfectly plump lips, a deep rouge color, ones he’s been dreaming of kissing since seeing them. “Please don’t make that look”
“What look?” Evelyn defends herself and Charlie chuckles, not noticing how he squeezes her arm into him. The action making butterflies erupt in her stomach.
“That pout, you keep giving me that look and pretty soon I’ll be telling you all my secrets” he says, eyes glimmering as he studies her face. Maybe it was left over from his talk with Knox or he just held admiration for the girl beside him. No one was really quite sure.
“What if I want to know all your secrets?” Evelyn whispers, eyes fluttering to look up at him through her lashes and Charlie feels the weight of her words. The tension carried between them and he wished he could do nothing more than kiss the pout off her face.
“Trust me Ev, you don’t want to know my secrets” he says after a beat and Evelyn finds herself grinning at the nickname only her friends ever called her.
“Say what you will but I have a feeling I’m getting under your skin” Evelyn teases, her free arm reaching over and dancing her fingers along his chest. Charlie just shakes his head, trying his best not to laugh because of the girl.
“What makes you say that?” he asks as they start to approach his dorm door and Evelyn just smiles as she looks at him.
“You called me Ev, only someone close to you is comfortable enough to use a nickname” and Charlie realizes his mistake but before he can address it her arm is loosening from his own and shoving his dorm door open again. Nate stands there in his boxers a second time and instantly groans the minute he sees her.
“Again, you’ve got to be kidding me?!” Nate groans out, throwing his arms in frustration.
“Dude, I don’t care. It’s not like I’m gonna look and why would it bother you if I do?” Evelyn says walking into the room and Nate blushes almost instantly but it goes away when the girls form plops onto Charlie’s bed instead of his own. She was already beginning to choose him.
“Don’t you have homework or something?” he questions, pulling his sweat pants back on and crawling into bed. He had accepted by now that this was how he was going to sleep.
“No, and I’m bored. But hey! Guess what? Charlie has friends!” she beams at him and Nate’s eyes fall to Charlie who moves to sit at the foot of his bed since Evelyn covered majority of it.
“Yeah right” Nate snorts and Charlie just rolls his eyes before looking at Evelyn.
“You know, I’d like to lay in my own bed” he says to her and a sly smirk crosses her face.
“I don’t mind cuddling, I can be big spoon if you want?” and red skin travels from Charlie’s neck and up to his ears which both Nate and Evelyn notice.
“Nate we’re locking the door from now on” he says and Nate claps his hands together before pointing at him.
“I’m with you on that one” he says and the boys quickly team up against Evelyn.
“Oh this is so not fair, ganging up on me like this. I’m perfectly innocent” yet the smile on her face says otherwise which gives encouragement for the boys to tease her more.
“Go back to your dorm, bother Violet for all I care” Nate says and Charlie nods, reaching for her arms and pulling her into an upright position.
“I agree, Nate and I have some business to discuss. Roommate business, for our ears only” Charlie says and Evelyn feigns offense as Charlie starts pushing her up off the bed.
“Yeah, it’s our weekly meeting. Only people who live in this room can be present” Evelyn gasps, fighting Charlie’s strength.
“But what if Marty is there? I’ve seen too much, my eyes just can’t bear it!” she defends but Nate joins in helping push the girl towards the door which is no equal fight. Before she can even react Charlie’s arms are locked around her waist, lifting her from the ground, and Nate opens the door where Charlie sets her down.
“Goodnight Ev” Charlie grins and she knows he did it on purpose after their conversation. Nate shuts the door and the last thing she hears is the click of the lock.
“You guys suck!” she groans out and the laughs from behind the door tell her they don’t care. Sighing she fixes her skirt that had been ruffled from the fight to the door and starts down the hallway to her own dorm. Maybe she had more reason to be curious about Charlie now, but at least she knew he thought of her as a friend. In some weird, antisocial way, and for now she could accept that.

Once classes ended Charlie found himself walking to the schools pay phones, excited to call his friends, and see what they had been up to so far this week. It was the one thing he looked forward to. He wasn’t sure if it was because it made him feel closer to Neil or if he had gone so long without talking to them it was all he wanted to do. Either way he finally felt a semblance of happiness since the whole mess had happened and Charlie was just gonna have to make do, one phone call at a time.
Yet when he rounds the corner to find the line of pay phones he also finds the familiar girl with brunette hair cascading down her back and a soft smile on her face. He takes a moment to admire her, the way she acts fondly about the person on the other end, how her fingers curl around the coiled wire, as if the rest of her body was on autopilot. She was so God damn beautiful and Charlie was such a fool, a fool for not being able to let the old him out. The old him that would do everything in his power to charm her.
“Hey you” his voice is sultry smooth, arms caging her in, and landing on either side of the pay phone. She’s so close he can smell the strawberry shampoo in her hair and the faint smell of her rose perfume. She turns with a wide smile, eyes glimmering with amusement, face so close that if he moved forward just a few more inches he could kiss her.
“Oh that’s just some classmate of mine, thinks he has a chance or something” she says into the phone, devious grin flashing back at Charlie. He figures whoever is on the other end asked who he was and all he could do was roll his eyes at the girl.
“I know. If he bothers me I’ll let you know” she says with a soft chuckle and Charlie raises his eyebrows, glancing at the girl.
“Me? Bother you? No way” he mouths, a hushed whisper coming from his mouth and she bites her lips to suppress a laugh. The sight of it alone makes Charlie’s heart clench. After eating dinner with her that one night he had somehow let her in. Not close enough to bare his soul like he had with his own friends but enough to finally feel comforted by someone around here. He regretted not staying strong but Evelyn somehow was the exception.
“Alright, I’ll talk to you later. Love you” she says into the phone and Charlie raises his eyebrows in questioning again. Watching as she turns back around to hang up the phone, still caged in by the boys arms.
“Boyfriend?” he questions and she giggles out loud this time, warming Charlie over.
“Brother actually” she tells him and now he actually is more confused than before.
“He doesn’t go here?” he asks and Evelyn shakes her head.
“No he practically begged my parents to go to public school, plus he’s only eleven, so I don’t think they had it in them to mind. Babies of the family, they get away with everything” she says with amusement glimmering in her eyes and Charlie wishes he had grown up with siblings. It might’ve made growing up with his parents much more bearable.
“So if I bother you, you’re gonna sick an eleven year old on me?” he teases and Evelyn crosses her arms, shrugging.
“Possibly, he does have a mean swing. As his only sister, I would know” and that has Charlie laughing loudly, mentally cursing himself for still not asking the girl to the dance.
“I’ll take your word for it” he tells her and Evelyn grins right back.
“What brings you to the pay phones on this fine Wednesday afternoon?” she questions and Charlie smiles.
“Calling Todd, today’s his day” he says and Evelyn snorts which Charlie finds adorable.
“They have designated days? Is Knox only Fridays then?” she teases right back and Charlie shakes his head, brunette hair swinging.
“No Knox is Tuesdays. Friday nights he spends with his girl” and Evelyn doesn’t miss this way his eyes glance down at her lips when he says ‘his girl’.
“Convenient” she teases and he rolls his eyes at her once more.
“If you don’t mind waiting doll we can go grab some dinner after this” he tells her and Evelyn smiles, still basking in the feeling Charlie was willing to spend time with her.
“I was actually going to meet Nate for trivia on campus but you’re welcome to come” she says and Charlie chuckles, thinking of his room mate who had seemed very on edge lately. If he knew him better he would know why but he figured it was just school.
“I’ll walk you to it, trivia isn’t for me” he says and now Evelyn is the one rolling her eyes at him. Charlie just finds it cute though as he finally pushes himself up off the wall and reaches for the pay phone in front of her. She watches as he drops a few coins in the machine and dials a number familiar to only him.
“Yes, I’m calling for Todd Anderson” he says, raising his eyebrows at Evelyn who watches fondly. After a few minutes of waiting, Evelyn trying to poke Charlie and urge him to finish up already, Todd finally answers.
"There he is" Charlie grins when the familiar voice comes through the phone.
"Charles" Todd greets back with a grunt and Charlie can't help but laugh. He was sad his friend had come out of his shell after he was no longer there to see it. The things he would do to see Todd stand on that desk and stick it to Nolan like that. So much better than a phone call from God.
"How are you, turning in all your assignments on time I suppose?" Charlie teases, knowing Todd was still a goodie two shoes no matter how out going he had become. He could practically see Todd rolling his eyes now.
"Well yeah considering my punishment is to work study under Nolan for the rest of the year. I do all my homework in his office" and Charlie almost winces from the punishment because that must be horrible. That meant no study group with the guys and when you had a question you had to ask Nolan.
"The rest of the year, man all I got was my ass beat and pots and pans for two weeks" Charlie says recalling the punishment he recieved for his own big stunt. He couldn’t sit in his chair properly for a week but at least he had tried to make change. Evelyn just wears a confused look as he hears him say this.
"I guess outwardly disobeying Nolan is much much worse than asking for girls to attend Welton" Todd says which has Charlie laughing again.
"Yeah well much to Nolan's dismay, him kicking me out landed me in a school with girls. Joke's on him" Charlie jokes, looking at the only girl in this God forsaken school that he had somehow gotten close too. She wears a smirk, hearing him mention girls and she hopes more specifically her.
"I'm pretty sure the joke is on those poor girls. Charlie Dalton and his miserable flirting" Todd picks on the boy and Charlie doesn't have the heart to tell him that he had given up the flirting and confident act. That he was just as miserable as the rest of the world if not more.
"Miserable flirting, me? Never" Charlie tells the boy, and Evelyn gives him a confused look because this guy talking on the phone right now is still one she hasn’t gotten to know. Yet a flash of him appears when he spots the look on her face and reaches to grab a strand of her hair, curling it slowly around his fingers.
"Yeah right- Oh, here's Meeks" Todd says before the phone shuffles around.
"Hello Sir" his red headed firends voice floods through the phone and Charlie can't help but crack a smile.
"Meeks, where have you been? My Latin grade is rapidly dropping and my teachers are starting to wonder why" he says referring to all the times Meeks spent hours making sure Charlie not only finished his homework but at least understood it.
"It's a dead language Charles, they'll never question it" he says and Charlie feels that familair clench around his heart. The one that happens everytime he misses being at that school and with his friends.
"I suppose you're right Meeks, it must just be that I miss you bossing me around" Charlie says and he watches as the brunnete girl perks up in front of him. He actually still couldn't believe he told her about all of them. He just hadn't told her what happened to them quite yet.
"We all miss you Nuwanda” the boy says and Charlie smiles, losing his cool and confident act with his friends. Especially when they got sentimental like this.
“Yeah, I miss you guys too. We’ll try and make plans soon” and Evelyn doesn’t miss the sad look on his face and she realizes just how much he misses his friends.
“Okay, bye guys” he says one last time before hanging up the phone and flashing a smile her way. Suddenly he’s distracted, no longer the boy who was just teasing her.
“You got your ass beat?” Evelyn questions, hoping to bring back that smile on his face. When he chuckles softly she realizes it just might’ve worked.
“That’s a story for another time, let’s get you to trivia” he says, arm falling over her shoulders and ready to escort her throughout the school. Evelyn smiles softly at him and shocks Charlie when her hand reaches up and laces with the one hanging off her shoulders.
“You’re different with your friends you know?” she tells him and Charlie nods slowly.
“Yeah well, they’ve known me for my entire life. Never got a chance to hide who I was from them” he tells her and Evelyn sighs, loving her new friendship with the boy but hating entirely that he wasn’t himself with her still.
“Is that you admitting how you hide your true self from us?” she questions again as they round the corner, eyes on the rec room set up for trivia this week.
“It was never a secret Ev, I just have a lot going on” he tells her as they push through the door and before she can question him even further they both realize fairly quickly trivia is not what’s happening here.
Alone beside a table is Nate holding a poster. A bouquet of flowers and some balloons sit on the table beside him, his eyes are hopeful until they land on Evelyn with Charlie’s arm wrapped around her shoulders and fingers laced with her own. Evelyn takes a moment to register exactly what’s happening but when she reads ‘Ev, will you go to the Valentines Dance with me?’ she’s quick to remove herself from Charlie.
“Nate, what’s going on?” she questions and Charlie takes one look at him and realizes what he should of when he first started here. Nate is in love with Evelyn.
“Uh, I’m trying to ask you to the dance” he mutters, eyes darting between the two and Evelyn is approaching him, almost in a way to not scare him.
“Why?” she questions and Nate’s eyes are quick to dart to Charlie, embarrassed that the boy was here to witness this.
“I’m gonna go” Charlie mutters and is out the door lighting fast as Evelyn searches Nate for answers.
“I just, I assumed no one had asked you yet” he says, arm gesturing to where Charlie had just made his great escape. Yet Evelyn doesn’t get what he means.
Nate means that he had assumed Charlie hadn’t already beaten him to it but based on the way the both of them walked through the door he assumed wrong. Evelyn takes it as him being good old reliable Nate. Her dear friend who doesn’t want her to attend a dance on her own. Her friend willing to give up his own date to help her. She still doesn’t get that he’s in love with her.
“Nate that’s sweet you don’t want me to go alone” she starts, trying to reach out for him and Nate realizes quickly his mistake.
“No I-”
“But I’m hosting the dance, I can’t take a date. It’s kinda business for me, not pleasure” and Nate snaps his mouth close. There was no use fighting, he’d already humiliated himself enough. At least this way he knew Evelyn wasn’t going with Charlie either. In fact she wasn’t going with anyone.
“Oh, well in that case” he says, arms starting to wrinkle the poster in his hands that he felt stupid for holding.
“It was such a sweet gesture though. I’ll save you a dance even” she tells him and Nate shakes his head with a chuckle, tossing the now mangled poster in the garbage.
“It’s fine, don’t worry about me” he says and Evelyn gives him a soft smile before pulling him in a hug.
“You’re a good friend Nate and the next dance I don’t plan, I’m all yours” she says and Nate feels his heart shatter once more because maybe everyone was right. He had waited far too long and now he never stood a chance with her.
“Sounds like a plan” he says pulling back, trying to hide the sadness written all over his face. Evelyn just smiles before looking back at the door, he assumes for Charlie.
“Well since there really isn’t any trivia, I better be off to do some homework” she tells him and Nate nods, collecting the roses and balloons on the table.
“Okay, I’ll see you later” he bids her and she smiles and waves before scurrying back off. Nate sighs and looks at the flowers and string of balloons in his hands. With a swift movement he dumps them in the trash right along with the poster and officially gives up.
Not wanting to face his room mate knowing the rejection he just faced from a girl they both liked, he starts for the doors to the outside. Determined to spend the rest of the day moping in his self pity alone.
Tumblr media
It’s dark by the time Nate makes it back to campus. Any later and it would’ve been past curfew. He still hadn’t gotten over what had happened and worst of all he no longer had a dorm to himself. He shared it with the very guy that was stealing the girl he loved whether he realized he was or wasn’t. Yet when he reaches the door and doesn’t see any light flooding out the bottom of it, he sighs a sigh of relief.
Slipping inside as quietly as he can he changes into some pajamas and crawls into his bed. He still feels the heavy weight of crying from behind his eyes but he wouldn’t risk Charlie hearing him. So he tried to get comfy, erase the image of Evelyn denying him and friend zoning him all in one go. There was no way now he could ever prove to her his feelings, he was already in too deep.
“You said you were just friends” Nate stiffens at Charlie’s voice filling the dark room, assuming he had been asleep this whole time.
“That wasn’t a lie” Nate responds after a moment and he hears Charlie sigh.
“You should have told me you liked her” and Nate wears a confused look even though Charlie can’t see it.
“Why, you clearly like her too?” Nate says, his voice clipped and holding an anger he didn’t want to take out on the boy because Evelyn wasn’t his property.
“Yeah but if you had said when I asked, I never would’ve gotten close to her. You don’t do that to friends” and Nate feels his heart break once more this afternoon because before Evelyn and Charlie, he was hopeful for a best friend and he had let that get away from. He had spent so much time resenting him to even realize Charlie might’ve finally let him in.
“We’re friends?” Nate can’t help but ask and Charlie chuckles in the night air.
“Yeah man, as much as I hate to admit it. I feel like a real shit one right now for falling for your girl like that though” and it’s finally out there. A confirmation and in the open for Nate to hear. Somehow it’s more comforting to know then harmful.
“I don’t blame you, I’ve loved her since I was thirteen. She’s one in a million” Nate says staring at the ceiling he can barely make out in the darkness.
“Why didn’t you tell her then? All those years ago?” Charlie questions and Nate shrugs into his sheets, thinking of thirteen year old him too scared to say something to her.
“I felt silly. We had been friends so long and I thought it’d be weird. After a while I just didn’t want to face rejection” Nate admits, knowing how lame he sounds. Charlie wished he could understand that, considering he told everyone exactly how he felt about them his whole life.
“This is coming from your friend, not the guy going after your girl, but you waited too long man. You became someone trustworthy to her, someone to always fall back on, reliable. Once a girl starts seeing you like that you become the guy she goes to when other guys hurt her” Nate knows it isn’t a bad thing but Charlie is right. You either become reliable in a relationship or reliable to the point of a brother, and that’s why getting out of the friend zone was so hard.
“So I shouldn’t have waited around?” he asks curiously, realizing Charlie was wiser than he expected.
“No man and you shouldn’t wait around for anything. We have one life, why waste it? You never know when it’s going to end so everyday spent waiting is one that’s lost! Carpe Diem! Seize the day!” Charlie rants, excitement hitching in his voice, and when his words resonate within him he freezes. For the first time since Neil had died that burning passion had found its way out of him and in its midst he realized exactly what he had been doing. He hadn’t been seizing the day, he was wasting it. Wasting it because he was heartbroken and if Neil could see him now he’d be pissed.
“It sounds like you know” Nate tells him, feeling the statement rattle around in his brain and hearing Charlie’s heavy breathing from across the room.
“I do Nate and no life is worth living if you can’t get the things you want out of it” he says, finally realizing exactly why Neil might’ve made the decision he did.
“Have you Charlie?” Nate asks and Charlie starts to laugh. Laugh at his own pure stupidity for wasting all this God damn time.
“No but I plan on starting tomorrow if you want to start with me?” Charlie asks and Nate grins from ear to ear. Evelyn may never see him the way he wants him to but he finally had a friend. One he made on his own. He could get over her with a friend.
“Yeah, plus I’d like to finally see you getting out there” Nate tells him and Charlie wears a matching smile that the boy cannot see.
“Can I tell you something Nate, something you won’t tell anyone until I’m ready? I just need to hear myself say it” Charlie asks, his voice desperate and pleading. All around sad and Nate can tell from across the room.
“Yeah man, whatever you need” and Charlie feels the tears pool in his eyes. He stares at his own ceiling and takes a moment to breathe.
“My best friend Neil died. He was just seventeen and when something like that happens you find life isn’t really worth living for if they’re not around” Nate freezes at the words, the truth hidden deep within the boy who had seemed so broken. Now he knew why.
“I’m so sorry Charlie. No one should lose anyone that young” Nate offers and Charlie smiles, his tears sliding down the sides of his face and into his pillow.
“Yeah but if he was here right now he’d be telling you the same thing. He didn’t want to waste a second of his life and even if he died so young I can promise you he didn’t” and for the first time in months Charlie feels a weight being lifted from his chest. The suffocating feeling he had lived with for so long.
“Carpe diem then” Nate says, finally resonating with Charlie and the truth that he carries. He was a broken man who was just trying to find his way. It can’t be easy to lose your best friend and be expelled all at once.

Coming back from break was always the worst. The good part was you knew you were already halfway there. The bad part was now it was time to get serious. No more silly Holidays or breaks. Now it was time for excessive studying, finals, and college applications. It meant being real for the next five months. The teachers knew this to which explained why Evelyn had a mountain of books to carry in her arms and enough homework to keep her up all night.
At least she had English. The one class she wouldn’t mind having an excessive amount of work. As long as she got to read and write it would be okay. A whole forty minutes to relax and enjoy the only lesson of the day that wouldn’t bore her entirely. Something to clear her mind. Or at least she thought.
“Isn’t he so cute, I told you” Evelyn heard Laurie whisper to Violet as she plopped down in her seat next to her. Laurie was the school gossip, most popular, most blonde, most perfect, and an in on every secret that flooded through the school. She had the power to be friends with anyone and for some reason she had chosen Evelyn and her friends.
Violet on the other hand was more outspoken. Gentle, kind, blue eyes as deep as the ocean and hair as dark as a raven. She had been Evelyn’s roommate the entirety of their time at the Academy and best friend in the world. So if Violet was part taking in Laurie’s gossip it only made sense Evelyn did too.
“Who’s cute?” Evelyn asked as she slid into her desk beside them and the two girls instantly shushed her, students turning, and giving the three confused looks.
“The new guy, he was in my math class” Violet whispered and Laurie nodded behind her, a grin etched across her face. New students meant fresh meat for Laurie. New gossip, new excitement, and possibly someone new to flirt with.
“Yeah he was in Latin with me first period. Real mysterious and quiet. It’s hot” Laurie spoke and Evelyn chuckled at her blonde friends antics. Only she could romanticize the idea of a new guy in Latin class with Mr. Miller who was bald and fat, and for some reason always smelled like moth balls.
“Well I wanna see the new guy” Evelyn pouted, now intrigued by the fact there was a new student randomly in the middle of the year and she not only hadn’t seen him yet but had been so busy with school she didn’t even hear about it.
“Don’t worry if you don’t have a class with him I heard he’s rooming with Nate” Violet said speaking of their male best friend. Nate hadn’t mentioned getting a new roommate but they also hadn’t really had the chance to see each other since they came back from the Holidays.
“Wait, quiet, there he is” Laurie hissed before Evelyn could yell about Nate not telling her. Evelyn nearly snapped her neck as she turned to the door where sure enough an unrecognizable boy walked through. His white button down was tucked into his required grey slacks, the sleeves of his shirt rolled up effortlessly. He was cute, and normally she wasn’t one to admit that so quickly.
“Wow” was all she could muster and the girls giggled at their normally not so shocked friend. Evelyn turned to see he had taken one of the open seats in the back, immediately dropping his head as if not to be seen.
“I wonder why he transferred?” Violet whispered back and Evelyn shrugged. Until now she hadn’t known anything of him and she hated that he actually was cute because now there was no way she could focus on class.
“Maybe his parents got a new job” she offered and the girls nodded as they accepted the answer and began to open their English books.
“Alright students today we’re going to be learning a little about Dr. J Evans Prichard” the room froze as a small scoff came from the back of the room, heads turning to spot the new kid.
“Is there an issue-” Mrs. Clark paused as her eyes scanned her papers for the new kids name. “Mr. Dalton?”
“No issue, just clearing my throat” Mrs. Clark rose her eyebrows, unconvinced with his excuse, but moved on nonetheless. Evelyn was surprised by such an outburst from the boy and grew even more curious about him. Suddenly his eyes locked on hers and she quickly turned her head away to avoid being caught staring.
“Well then, let’s open Chapter One of our books, Understanding Poetry” the class moved and did as told as Mrs. Clark got started with the lesson. Evelyn found it wasn’t only the boy that kept her distracted during the lesson but his reaction to the material as well. Why didn’t he like Prichard and how did he even know about him? She figured these were questions she may never get to learn the answers too.
Charlie had grown used to the staring. He figured he’d stick out like a sore thumb considering the fact most of the students were expecting the same old classmates from before. Add in the fact it was during the middle of the year. He thought he’d have fun admiring the girls and being around them considering he now went to a co-ed school but he still didn’t feel enough like himself to care. The Charlie that answered a phone call from God would be disappointed to see him now.
As Evelyn continued throughout her day she noticed the new kid ended up being in all the same classes with her. Guess it didn’t matter he was rooming with Nate because she couldn’t seem to get away from him after English class. With the shared amount of time together she learned he was quiet and mysterious just like Laurie had said, which perked her interest about him even more. So it was a total loss trying to pay attention in any of her classes, she was in another world, curious thoughts swirling her mind about him.
“Hey has anyone seen Nate?” Martin, Violets boyfriend, asked. They were sat in the students lounge, determined to get study group rolling so they didn’t have as much homework to do after dinner. Martin also needed all the help with classes that he could get. Martin wasn’t as smart as the rest of them but he was at least willing to work at it. He was determined and Evelyn figured that was exactly the reason Violet had fallen in love with him. Evelyn now realized that being stuck in her thoughts the rest of the day made her unaware of the fact she hadn’t seen her friend all day or at the very least talked to him.
“No not since lunch” Violet spoke, realizing their friend had been A-wall for a while.
“I’ll go find him” Evelyn popped up, curious herself as to why Nate hadn’t been around all day. She needed a distraction too, she couldn’t start the new semester with clouded judgement.
“Don’t get caught on the boys dorm floor!” Violet called after her, always worried about her careless friend, and Evelyn waved a hand back. Mostly unbothered considering Violet had Martin in their shared room almost every night.
“Nate, why are you hiding?” Evelyn shoved the familiar dorm door open to spot not only Nate at his desk doing homework but the new kid shirtless on the usually empty bed. She had already forgotten her friend had gained the new kid. What a waste of a distraction.
“Eve can you learn how to knock, what if we didn’t have pants on?” Evelyn rose her eyebrows to which the new boy snickered at the look on the girls face. He hadn’t meant to respond but seeing her expression made him laugh. She was cute he thought, someone he might’ve spent more time thinking about if his head wasn’t so crowded with grief.
“If you didn’t have pants on I’d probably be a little concerned as to what you two were doing and then I might’ve snuck a peek” Evelyn shot a wink towards the new boy, figuring if he was so quiet she could mess with him. Charlie was surprised by this response, not realizing the girl from most of his classes could be so outspoken.
“Evelyn could you stop embarrassing me for once, I meant if we were changing” he tried pushing her out the door and she giggled lightly, fighting back and forcing the door open.
“Oh lighten up Nate, it’s all in good fun. I just came to drag your ass to study group, Trig is killing me” she pouted at the boy, knowing he would cave. He always did. Nate held a soft spot for Evelyn and sometimes she abused her power, without even realizing she had it.
“Eve you’re gonna have to learn math at some point” Nate crossed his arms, hoping if he did homework in the dorm he could get his new roommate to open up a little. Martin was a cool guy but him and Nate were on different spectrums and if Martin wasn’t dating Violet he figured they’d never talk to each other.
“Yeah, but todays not that day. Let’s go” Evelyn shoved him towards the door and he sighed as she collected his books. Not willing to take no for an answer.
“Fine, you’re so annoying” Nate huffed as he went to grab his books from her before she messed his notes up. Now free of the books she turned to the new kid, ready to take her opportunity while she had it. The sooner her questions were answered the better off she’d be. No curiosities to keep her distracted.
“You too newbie, let’s move it” Evelyn collected the shirt she saw him wearing earlier from the ground and tossed it at him. He wore a surprised look but quickly collected himself.
“I think I’m okay sweetheart” he quipped and she rose her eyebrows, surprised to hear the confidence in his voice, but she didn’t falter as she held her ground.
“Save the pet names for Nate, we’re studying now” she told him, arms crossing over her chest. Charlie stared at her in shock for a moment and Nate sighed as he looked at Evelyn. The girl he had been in love with since he was thirteen. For a moment he realized having a room mate meant having someone new to steal her away.
“Man, she doesn’t take no for an answer. So save us the time and just come” Nate suggested a little defeated and Charlie looked to the girl, he saw how she held her shoulders high and waited for him to stand. She was brave.
Without answering Charlie stood and shrugged on the button up shirt he had planned on abandoning for the rest of the night. Evelyn grinned in victory as she watched his fingers glide up the buttons and hide away his chest. Evelyn tried her best not to seem too smug but it was hard not to when she had already convinced the new boy to tag along.
“I think you’re cool new kid” Evelyn said as he started to grab his own textbooks. Charlie gave her an amused look before shaking his head.
“It’s Charlie” he corrected her and she shrugged before turning towards the door and leading the pair of boys back to the study group.
“Found him and a straggler” Evelyn announced as she pushed the door open. The friend group turned to find the familiar faces of their friends was accompanied by a new one.
“Of course Evelyn would bully the new kid into spending time with us” Laurie said gesturing to him as they all took their seats at the table.
“I had to, Nate was talking about them not wearing pants together. It was my duty to save him” Charlie was surprised as she grabbed his shoulder and gave it a squeeze. He had never met someone so unbothered by the world around her. Most girls he knew were uptight or dumb.
“She took that out of context, she just opened my dorm door. One of us could’ve been changing” Nate quickly defended himself and the group laughed.
“That won’t stop her Nate, she would’ve enjoyed the view” Violet said and Evelyn let out a proud hmph because that was exactly what she said.
“Well Nate, introduce us to your friend” Laurie leaned forward on the table, dropping the nail file she held in her hands. Evelyn was surprised by the jealousy the bubbled in her stomach as she spotted the way Laurie looked at him.
“This is my new roommate Charlie, he just transferred from Welton” surprised faces appeared as they heard this. Shock filling almost each and every one of the group.
“A Welton boy, guess it is true that they’re all cute” Laurie smirked and Charlie gave a surprised look that these girls were so free willed with their speech. He figured majority of them were shy but maybe this is what happened when you went to a co-ed school.
“How did a Welton boy end up here of all places?” Violet asked him, curious as to how you could go from one of the best schools to here.
“Yeah, I tried to get into Welton and they denied me. Weird that someone who actually could attend comes here?” Martin asked a bit surprised. He already struggled at Ridge, Welton took one look at his grades and said hell no.
“You guys know you’re a prep school too right?” Charlie asked and Evelyn laughed like he just told the best joke of the year.
“Yeah but not a good one, maybe a quarter of our graduates go to ivy leagues and since we’re a co-ed school we’re frowned upon. The Ridge Rejects” Evelyn bumped her shoulder with his, surprised he wasn’t aware of this. Then again why would someone from the big times bother to know anything about the left behind kids.
“Yeah, exactly. We’re the kids who were too smart to go to public school but not smart or rich enough to go places like Welton or Henley Hall” Violet explained and Charlie nodded as he learned this new information. No wonder he ended up here of all places.
“Well I’m here because I’m the king of the rejects. Welton booted me” Charlie spoke so nonchalantly but the rest of the group gasped.
“They kicked you out?” Martin eyed him, shock covering his features.
“How did you get kicked out?” Nate asked, new to this information as well. He had been dying to know since last night.
“I hit a kid, he deserved it, and I’d like to do it again. On top of that they wanted me to sign some bullshit contract and I wouldn’t so they shoved me out the doors” Charlie stated, flipping through his assignments, already having come to terms with the fact he was no longer apart of that school.
“That’s really bad ass new kid” Evelyn spoke, eyes glimmering with admiration, and Nate burned with jealousy the same way he had been since she shoved open their dorm door and winked at him.
“Thanks” Charlie spoke and Evelyn was surprised to see he was much more than they had thought.
“Well Charlie welcome to the school of Rejects, you’ll fit right in”

“Bullshit” a voice mutters behind Evelyn in the hall. Normally over the bustling of other students the word would have never been heard but Evelyn picks up on it instantly, turning to find a flustered Charlie Dalton stomping down the hallway.
“Charlie, wait up!” she calls out and does not miss the way his shoulders lift up and down with a heavy sigh. She has no intentions of annoying him further but clearly she can’t help but figure out why he’s annoyed in the first place.
“I’m not really in the mood Ev” he mutters once she catches up to his side, yet based on the way he slows down so she doesn’t have to struggle to keep up with him says otherwise.
“I’m just worried, I’ve never seen you so frustrated before” Evelyn says with a heavy sincerity and Charlie sighs again before softening his eyes and looking at the girl.
“The dean called me down to the office today. Says I need to have at least two clubs or sports and since I’m so late in joining all they had left was pole vaulting and planning committee” his words shock Evelyn just slightly and Charlie seems just as annoyed as before now reminding himself of the situation.
“Well look at the bright side. You said you did rowing at your last school which means you have strong arms. Pole vaulting should be a breeze” then Evelyn surprises Charlie by reaching for his bicep and giving it a firm squeeze. It doesn’t go unnoticed by either of them how her hand could barely curl around the size of it. “See strong”
“I’m just not in the mood for a team sport” Charlie says, trying to brush away the feeling of Evelyn’s fingers on him.
“Don’t think of it as a team. I mean technically you’re doing the event by yourself. As for planning committee at least you’ll have me” and Evelyn’s words have him stopping in his tracks.
“You’re on planning committee?” this was worse, so much worse than Charlie had imagined. He already struggled to keep himself away from Evelyn and now he just had to see her all the time and try to stay away.
“Yes sir, actually the head of the committee. I’m kinda a control freak but at least I put it to good use” Evelyn says with a confident grin and Charlie struggles to not smile at her. She surprised him every single day.
“So now you get to boss me around, yeah this definitely isn’t going to work” he says starting to walk down the hallway again and Evelyn rolls her eyes, grabbing his arm again and pulling him back into step with her.
“I’m not going to boss you around, we just get to plans things together” she tells him with the shrug of her shoulders and Charlie nods before glancing at her.
“What kind of things?” he asks and Evelyn smiles a wide grin.
“Well for starters, this week we get to start planning the Valentines dance” Evelyn says and doesn’t expect the groan that reverberates from the boy beside her.
“Doll you are not helping this at all, red and pink candy hearts, teenage kids fawning over each other. I’ll pass” and as much as Evelyn wants to take offense to his words she can’t help by feel her body buzz over the name he just called her.
“I promise it won’t be bad, I’ll make it bearable even. Then next year I’ll remember to remind you when sign ups are for stuff you actually want to do” and Charlie’s exterior completely softens at the sweet words of the girl who is being completely genuine in wanting to help him.
“Thanks Ev, and I promise I won’t be a burden. I’m just still trying to get used to this whole new school thing” he tells her, a large hand coming to squeeze her shoulder and Evelyn can only grin.
“So you’ll plan the dance with me?” she asks with wide and hopeful eyes and Charlie can only sigh before caving.
“Yes, I’ll help you plan the dance” he agrees which has Evelyn squealing from excitement.
“I can’t wait, we’re meeting tonight at 6. See you then!” and just like that she’s pressing a chaste kiss to his cheek and scurrying down the hallway in excitement. Charlie just stands there, a bit shocked, and a red hue covering his face. Evelyn kissed him like she had done it thousands of times before when in actuality she never had.
“Careful there, gonna ruin your book” Marty says to Nate as they both witness this interaction in the hallway. Nate’s knuckles are white over the spine of his Biology textbook as he sees the girl he loves kiss Charlie on the cheek.
“I don’t care” Nate grumbles, annoyed and heartbroken. Mainly disappointed in himself for not taking his chance when he should have.
“Well you should, no use taking it out on the book when you can just go and get the girl” Marty says, confused why Nate never did make a move. It was easier for Marty though. He had never been rejected and also had been with Violet for the entirety of High School.
“It’s not that simple” Nate grumbles and Marty just chuckles.
“Whatever man, it just looks to me like you have to make a choice because you can’t be mad at her when you never tried” and Nate hates how right he is because it truly wasn’t fair. To be so indifferent to not only his best friend but his roommate who had truly done nothing wrong. So what if the guy wanted to keep to himself, that was his choice, and Nate’s disappointment in not having a new friend shouldn’t be taken out on him.
“Hey guys, any chance either of you do track in the spring? Specifically pole vaulting?” Charlie appears out of nowhere beside the two. Nate nearly jumps considering he was just thinking about him and the fact he initiated any conversation at all.
“I’m in track but I throw discus” Marty responds a soft shrug of his shoulders.
“I’m also in track but I run a few events. I’m not particular on launching myself in the air” Nate responds quickly and much to either of the boys surprise Charlie actually laughs.
“Yeah well neither am I. Maybe the dean has a death wish out for me” Charlie says once his laughter has calmed down and both Nate and Marty chuckle at this.
“Possibly but don’t worry too much. Thing about track is you don’t actually have to be good at it and I do have a buddy who pole vaults. He could give you a few tips” Marty tells him as he gives his shoulder a squeeze and Charlie nods.
“Perfect, as long as he is willing to work around planning committee” neither of the boys miss the sarcasm that comes from Charlie but Nate doesn’t have time to focus on it because he knows exactly who runs planning committee and now he regrets not joining when she asked.
“Oh he will, no one is willing to face the wrath of Evelyn. Especially when she’s planning something important” Marty says and Charlie laughs again which earns him a wide smile because the boy is finally socializing with them.
“Does the Valentine’s dance fall under important?” Charlie asks and both boys nod quickly.
“That is probably number one. The holiday alone is important to Evelyn” Nate says and it finally dawns on him. Charlie may be planning the dance with Evelyn but Nate could at least ask her to it. Thing was, how do you ask the girl you’ve been friends with for years to be your date to the most romantic dance on campus?
“Well shit” Charlie mutters and the boys laugh again.
“I better get to biology” Nate finally says, noticing how the hallways had slowly cleared out. He shows both boys the textbook he was strangling not that long ago.
“Yeah, little Nate here can’t blow his perfect attendance record” Marty says with a slap to his back and he quickly rolls his eyes.
“You tease but who’s the one who helps you with Trig” Nate says and Marty rolls his eyes which has Nate laughing as he starts off and down the hallway. Leaving the two boys to talk alone.
He knew one thing. Getting upset would be useless and it was finally time to take action and put himself out there. After all, what was the worst that could happen?
“Guess who just joined planning committee?” Evelyn says with a chesire cat grin as she slides into her seat beside Violet and Laurie. Both girls tune into her instantly, desperate for gossip after a long day of classes.
“Who?” Laurie is the first to bite, blonde hair perfectly curled and falling in her face the closer she leans towards her friend.
“Charlie” the girl lightly squealed and instantly shocked faces are painted across both the girls faces.
“So you’re telling us Mr. Unsociable not only joined a club but your club?” Violet says, just as surprised as the rest of the group.
“He had too, the Dean said he needed at least two sports or clubs and since mostly everything is taken he got put in mine” and neither of the girls miss the dreamy look on her face. Evelyn already liked Charlie more than she even knew and as much as they were happy for her, they both knew exactly who it would kill.
“What else did he get?” Laurie asks curiously, never really knowing there was a rule in place for taken outside class activities.
“Pole vaulting. He seems pretty disappointed but my afternoon wouldn’t be entirely wrecked if I got to see that” Evelyn says that has the two girls giggling at her and her openness. Evelyn never kept anything to herself and having such an outspoken best friend had its entertainment.
“Only you could romanticize pole vaulting” Violet says with the roll of her eyes and Evelyn quickly scoffs.
“Romanticize? I’m just excited to watch those biceps strain as he literally launches himself in the air. I bet he looks sexy all sweaty and in his track uniform. I hope it has no sleeves” and as she says it Evelyn realizes very quickly that romanticizing is exactly what she’s doing.
“Shit, I am romanticizing. Whatever, I felt his biceps I have every right too” and both the girls laugh.
“So what’s the goal here?” Laurie asks, already backing off Charlie the minute she realized her brunette friend who never had crushes on anyone finally did.
“I don’t know. Get him to open up, get to know him. We’re planning the dance together, maybe he’ll ask me” Evelyn shrugs, opening her textbook unaware of the soft smile on her face.
“If he doesn’t ask you Ev, he’s crazy” Violet says and Evelyn smiles widely. She knew deep inside there was a confident and cool Charlie. One who wasn’t afraid to flirt with her and she was going to find a way to bring him out. One way or another. Maybe in the process get to kiss the shit out of him too.
“I guess we’ll just have to wait and see” she grins and both girls laugh at their friend’s antics. As much as they were hopeful for her they also were saddened for their other friend. The only thing the group could do was hope and pray that the new kid didn’t destroy their friend group entirely especially since he had been actively avoiding them the whole time. Clearly Charlie held burdens they could never understand and they didn’t need to give him something new to carry.
Both girls watch as Evelyn grins at the boy the minute he enters class and goes to sit in the very seat Evelyn saw him in the first time. Charlie smiles back if only briefly before slumping in his chair and Violet and Laurie share a look because even if Charlie denied it he clearly liked Evelyn too. After all he had no reason not to, even if he avoided everyone around him. A pretty girl was a pretty girl but that girl just so happened to be Evelyn too. She was the kind of girl that turned heads, the kind of girl that had it all. The personality to match her looks and a confidence that matched the one hiding underneath Charlie’s surface. It was only a matter of when Evelyn would finally get it to come out. When it did, there was no doubt of how good they’d be together.

When Evelyn wakes up the next morning the smile on her face is still wide. She had never really known what this feeling would be like. That feeling you get when you like someone and they just so happen to like you back. It made you feel brand new, refreshed, hopeful. Which may explain why getting up so early on a Saturday hadn’t bothered her like it normally would. Instead she turns off her alarm on the first ring and makes her way to the showers with that beaming grin.
It’s not long until she’s dressed in a simple floral dress, thankful they weren’t required school uniforms on the weekend. When she adds a little more makeup than normal she excuses it as feeling experimental but honestly she just wanted Charlie to look at her with those eyes that he always does. The eyes that make her squirm in her seat while she feels every nerve ending go off in her body. In fact she’s glad him finally kissing her last night didn’t entirely short circuit her brain.
“You’re forgetting something” Violet grins behind her in the reflection of the mirror and Evelyn furrows her eyebrows as she looks back at her.
“What?” she questions, eyebrows pulled together tightly. She inspects her face quickly, worried she had messed something up or missed and Violet just laughs.
“If you’re gonna put all that effort into your makeup you might as well cover up that neck” Violet says, hand reaching to tip her neck up and reveal the dark red mark right above her throat. Evelyn gasps in an instant, eyes now trained on the spot that is very visibly now that she’s paying attention. Her stomach drops at the idea of other students seeing it as they roam the halls today.
“Shit” she mutters, hands fumbling through the makeup on her desk in search of anything that could possibly cover it up. Violet quickly sets a hand on her own, stopping the girl from stressing too much.
“Calm down and let me help” Violet tells her, grabbing her own chair and pulling it next to hers. Evelyn tries to calm as the girl gets to work, hands grabbing the makeup and focusing her attention to the mark.
“How do you know what to do?” Evelyn asks after a beat, her heart rate now at a normal and soft thump. Violet just giggles at the question as she glances up from her neck and into her eyes.
“When Marty and I first got together he would always leave marks on accident, I got pretty good at covering them up and now I just make sure he leaves them where others can’t see” she says, suggestion in her tone and eyebrows raised which makes Evelyn laugh loudly at the notion.
“It was my first real kiss” Evelyn whispers, recalling the two other times she had barely pecked a boy and felt nothing but regret in her stomach. Instead she kissed a boy hard and good and in return the butterflies hadn’t left her stomach yet.
“He’s good for you and I’m pretty sure you’re good for him too. Hell, he would barely talk to us when he started, and now I can’t get rid of the guy” Violet teases and Evelyn laughs again, admiring the black hair that cascades down her friends back as she works on fixing her neck up.
“I’m just so nervous, I don’t really know what this means for us. I wasn’t even really planning on kissing him but he just showed up at the door and I couldn’t help myself” Evelyn says, softly shaking her head and using the brunette curls falling forward to hide her face. Violet just smiles, leaning back as she checks over her work.
“It means he likes you, and you like him. Don’t let the pressure of others and their expectations ruin what you guys already got. Just cherish it and the rest will happen on its own” she tells her, recalling all the times people had judged her and Marty for getting together so young. At least they had stayed together the whole time, a testament that each of those people were wrong.
“And if he doesn’t want to date me?” Evelyn voices her worries and Violet just gives her a soft smile, knowing how long her best friend waited to feel this way about someone, to stop feeling broken because she couldn’t have crushes like other girls.
“He does, but if not he’s an idiot and I’ll kill him” Violet deadpans and Evelyn is laughing again, heart easing due to her best friends words and the she’s wrapping the raven haired girl into a hug.
“Thanks V” she tells her honestly and Violet hugs right back, enjoying the time alone they have together within this dorm. “Now, how does my neck look?” Evelyn asks pulling back and lifting her chin for Violet to investigate.
“As good as it’s gonna get” she tells her, knowing no makeup in the world was ever that successful at covering any mark left by a silly lovestruck boy. Evelyn turns to the mirror to find it much better than before but the shadow of it still there. Accepting her fate she stands and joins the girl.
“Let’s get breakfast then” she tells her and the girls are off in search of their friends and Saturday morning pancakes which was the only good reason for getting up so early on a Saturday around here. Plus Evelyn wanted to get a head start on planning the spring sport fundraisers before she had a meeting that more than likely only Charlie would show up too.
The closer the pair got to the dining hall the more nervous Evelyn became. She wasn’t used to being nervous like this but for the first time in her life she was going to face a boy she liked and not only liked but had kissed just last night. Her cheeks were already burning red just thinking about it and Violet just shook her head as the two walked through the lunch line and headed for their table that held all of their friends.
“Morning” Marty beamed as the two girls joined them. Evelyn felt her heart drop as she realized Charlie wasn’t there. Nate saw the disappointed look in her eyes and felt jealousy twist in his gut as she moved to sit beside him.
“Heard you got caught sneaking to Marty’s room last night” Laurie teases, eyes twinkling with amusement as she looks at Nate who had told them about how him and Charlie had spotted the girl.
“Better the boys than Mr. Holly” Violet said with a shrug, taking a bite of pancake and grinning around the fork.
“Seems like everyone had a bit of fun last night” Laurie grins, eyes landing on Evelyn. The thing about Laurie is she notices everything, observes everyone and everything around her. The evident disappointment, red cheeks, and half visible hickey on the girls neck were all immediately noticed by the blonde girl. Her awareness is what made her the queen of drama at Ridge.
“What?” Evelyn gapes, getting more nervous as everyone at the table begins to stare at her. Laurie just smiles, leaning against Marty to reach for the girl across the table, manicured nails turning her chin upwards and as the bruise is revealed to everyone Marty snorts, coughing around his food.
“Holy shit, Ev’s got a hickey” he says and the girl quickly shushes him, pulling away from the blonde girl who settles back into her seat across from her. Nate’s stomach drops, the sight of the small bruise pointing out Charlie did much more than kiss the girl. His girl even. Yet he had to save face, he had told himself he would get over this. He just didn’t think it would be this hard.
“Stop, it’s nothing. Especially since he couldn’t bother to show up this morning” Evelyn grumbles, eyes dropping to her plate so they can’t see her utter disappointment and Nate suddenly feels guilty. He wakes up Charlie every Saturday but today he didn’t because he was jealous.
“Evelyn I’m sure it’s not you” Violet starts but the group is cut off as the chestnut haired boy clambers into the seat beside the girl, hair a disarray and black t-shirt wrinkled against his skin. The very shirt he slept in and didn’t bother to change since he was in such a rush.
“Shit, what time is it?” He asks quickly, shoving his tray onto the table and the group laughs while Evelyn beams a bright smile at the boy beside her. As Charlie glances amongst the table he spots Evelyn’s soft smile and returns one back.
“It’s nine, there’s still a half hour of breakfast” she tells him and he smiles at how gorgeous she looks. He loved weekends when he could see the girl in her regular clothes. It gave him a better image of what life would be like with her outside of this school. That is if he got to keep her.
“Hi” he tells her, a little breathless and eyes shining into her own like they always did. The very look Evelyn had been hoping for as she got ready this morning. Then much to Evelyn and everyone else’s surprise Charlie leaned in and pressed a soft kiss to her cheek before turning to his food.
“You forget to set your alarm?” Marty asks, laughing lightly at the boys disheveled appearance. Charlie sends him a glare before glancing over Evelyn’s head to look at Nate.
“Nate usually wakes me but I guess this morning he forgot” and with everyone’s eyes on him Nate not only feels guilty for giving Evelyn doubts about Charlie but guilty because he knows everyone at this very table knew he had done it on purpose.
“My bad man, I just forgot” he says and doesn’t even convince himself before turning back to his own plate of food that he had barely touched due to the fact his stomach was in knots all morning
“So, this is like officially a thing?” Laurie asked, pointing between both Charlie and Evelyn. Instead of responding Evelyn thinks about what Violet had said and looks to Charlie to see if there is any regret written on his face.
“I guess so” Charlie just tells her before flashing Evelyn a smile and continuing to eat his food. Evelyn can’t help the wide smile that crosses her face as she drops her head to look at her food. The rest of the table share knowing looks but this time no one offers Nate a remorseful smile because his own jealousy would be the thing to ruin his friendship with Evelyn, not telling her his feelings.
After finishing breakfast and being harassed for the hickey on Evelyn’s neck the group is quick to move on to the rest of their day. Retreating to study halls, clubs, sports, and group projects. Charlie promises Evelyn he’ll meet her soon for planning committee, needing a shower and change of clothes before he went about the rest of his day. That’s how he finds himself walking back to his dorm with Nate by his side.
“Look man, I know you’re upset but that was a dick move” Charlie tells him as he pushes through the dorm door and Nate drops his head.
“I know” he mutters, watching as Charlie collects his towel and a change of clothes so he can head to the showers. Nate had been too busy letting his emotions control him he nearly forgot he finally had a friend, the kind he always wanted.
“I know this whole thing isn’t ideal, I’d hate it if I were in your shoes too. You have to remember we’re friends though and you were the one who decided to let her go” Charlie tells him, tossing the towel over his shoulder. Nate groans, hating himself even more for deciding to let her go.
“I know man, I don’t know what to tell you though. It’s not like I just fell out of love with her over night okay. I need time to process and when things happen like you biting her neck I struggle” Nate tells him, sitting on his bed and running his hands through his hair. H hated that he never committed and he knew he was being a child but this was just how it was now.
“Nate, I’m not a fucking vampire. Also I obviously know that but if you love her you have to let her be happy and I like to think I make her happy. Plus she makes me really fucking happy, for the first time in months, even when I thought I never would be again. So please, be a friend” Charlie pleads and Nate is reminded of the truth that Charlie had shared with him not so long ago. A sentiment that he was just a guy trying to figure things out and his intentions weren’t to be mean.
“Okay” Nate agrees even though agreeing officially confirmed he would never leave the friend zone no matter how badly he wanted to. Charlie nods once he realizes Nate has agreed and then starts for the door.
“I’ll see you later” he tells him before going off and getting the shower he should’ve had this morning.
It’s not long until he’s finally refreshed and on his way to meet Evelyn. The excitement of seeing her alone has him nearly buzzing as he laps the hallways in search of the girl. Coming upon the study room used for planning committee he shoves through the door without a second thought. He watches as the girl looks up from her alphabetized and color coded planning binder and offers him a grin.
“Clean now, are you?” She teases and he rolls his eyes before moving to the chair beside her.
“Fresh as a daisy, want to smell?” He asks her, moving to nudge his face near her own and she giggles as his slightly damp hair brushes against her cheek.
“I trust you” she squeals, shoving him away and he grins, searching her features and taking all of her in now in the daylight.
“I can’t stop thinking about last night” he tells her and Evelyn blushes lightly, eyes glancing away under his stare and Charlie just smiles, hand reaching to tuck some hair behind her ear.
“We have to plan the fundraiser” she tells him, hands still gripping the binder that Charlie swears is her lifeline but he just chuckles and ducks in close, lips capturing her own. The hum of contentment that leaves her mouth tells him that she actually doesn’t mind one bit.
“We can plan later, I want to make up for all the time I haven’t been able to kiss you” he mutters against her lips and the words wrap around Evelyn’s heart and she wishes to tie it with a bow and keep them there forever.
“Such a sap” she mutters back before reaching to run her fingers through his damp hair. Charlie smiles against her lips, kissing her deeply due to the action. When his lips start to trail down to her neck again she’s too lost in his touch.
“For the first time I’m so glad no one ever shows up to meetings for my club” Evelyn says, a little breathless and lips swollen from him. Charlie laughs, hot breath fanning across her neck and Evelyn laughs from the ticklish feeling and pulls away.
“Hey, get back here” Charlie pouts, arms snaking around her waist and Evelyn shakes her head as he pulls her flush against him.
“No, no more hickeys. I don’t want to get caught again” she tells him and Charlie laughs, hugging her close and Evelyn hugs right back.
“Sorry, I just can’t get enough of you” he tells her and Evelyn smiles, pressing a soft kiss to his nose and admiring his chocolate eyes.
“Yeah, same” she tells him with a grin and Charlie kisses the corner of it, thankful to finally have her all to himself. Not hold back every time he wants to kiss her for being so damn adorable.
“In that case, do you want to join me on a date tonight?” He asks and Evelyn blushes, thinking of how she was never one of those girls who was able to go to the small cafe on campus and go on dates. The small restaurant a hot spot for Saturday night dates with the heart throb boys.
“I’d like that” she tells him and Charlie smiles and presses his lips to hers again.
“Good, then maybe after I’ll sneak into your room again”
