Favourite Spider associated myths | Anansi, Aracne, Jorogumo, Spider Grandmother | TW: Spider
Feared and always present Spider had always fascinated me, and also many people in many cultures. Here are my favorite stories [beware a spider image below the cut]
Aracne |  At the origin of words like arachnid or arachnophobia is the Ancient Greek myth of the weaver Aracne. Renowed by her craft she boasted to be better than the Gods. Defied by Athena she does an admirable tapestry denouncing the Gods abuses to mortals (the rapt of Europa, or Leda) and refuse to bow to the Gods. Furious the Athena forces the girl to choke herself, then, having compassion for such a skilled weaver, transform her on the first spider.
Anansi | The name comes from the Akan language of Ghana and means “spider” and his figure is know in West Africa. Anansi is a trickster, sometimes cruel but almost always witty and ressourceful. He is also a story teller who, like the spider, spins his story. In fact, he won with clever tricks the stories of the world from the Great God and share them with humanity so people had knowledge and are not longer bored. Brought by enslaved population his stories are also popular in the Antilles.
Grandmother Spider | Variations of the myth exist in many parts of North America, from Northen Mexico to Southern Canada. On the culture of some Hopi and Navajo groups Grandmother Spider is a important benevolent figure. She taught people how to weave but also, associated with the Sun Tawa, teached humanity how to live and in some occasion, gives them souls, steals a bit of the sun to gives them fire or guides them to new worlds.
Jorogumo | Born in Japan Edo period, the story of this creature (a “yokai”) has become popular in pop culture. It starts with a simple but interesting question: what if a female demon ate men like the Joro Spider eats males after mating? With tricks and lies the Jorogumo tries to attract young warriors or workers to mate with her. A shapesifter she can create webs and control smaller spider, specially the Joro Spider, one of Japan bigger species who share her name.
+ Bonus
Aerop - Enap | The Nauru creation myth follows and old spider who lived bored in a dark and lone worls. She set to correcy this and went to search for other beings. After being swallowed by a clam proceed to fight aided by other mollusc to open and kill the clam. She them proceeds to create the world with it’s shell while her snails friens become the Sun and the Moon. After she created the worls, she also made animals from mud and thus was not bored anymore.

The Evermore Grimoire: Mermaids of the Seven Seas
The Caribbean Mermaids are a pod of mermaids who live in the Caribbean Sea and are regarded as the most beautiful of their kind despite their history being tied to a curse that all mermaids fear. Known for their power to manipulate sound however they see fit (including Sonic Scream), it was these mermaids who used their voices to enchant anyone they desired. However it was also a rule in this pod to not go anywhere near the surface world after the Queen suffered a horrific tragedy that forced her onto the throne before her time causing most of the pod’s vocal power to gradually weaken over time. Despite this, a group of rebellious mermaids continued to secretly visit the surface world on the nights before, during and after a full moon when their magic was its strongest and could grant them human legs. On one particular visit they came across a group of fishermen who seduced them. Unbeknownst to the mermaids, these fishermen knew exactly who they were and secretly drugged them. The mermaids were held captive and news of their disappearance within their pod soon began to spread, yet the Queen did nothing. After the duration of the full moon passed by, the mermaids transformed back into their true selves despite being held captive and made to do horrific things with the fishermen. Every day that passed until the next full moon, their anger towards these vile men grew which eventually led to one of the mermaids lashing out. She struck one fisherman down with one swipe of her beautiful golden shimmery tail instantly snapping his spine in half. This gave the other mermaids the courage to do the same, however after the last fisherman died the mermaids felt a change within themselves. Their beauty and power began to fade essentially turning them into a shadow of their former selves. They had become Sirens. Unknown to them the Queen had secretly made her own journey to the surface world, but instead of helping them turn back to mermaids, she punished them for breaking her rules. They had to live out the rest of their lives in exile as vengeful Sirens, a curse that would ripple throughout the Seven Seas, forever.

Battle of the Ships
Round 3 Part 4 Poll 2
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Argo : It's like, the og fictional ship. Transported Jason and his bros to get a Golden Fleece and they brought back also Medea who then murdered her and Jason’s kids. Legend
Flying Dutchman : A very cool classical sea myth ship but specifically in POTC it is VERY cool looking. It pops up straight out of the ocean and its become one with the sea. The ship and its crew are all covered in sea weed and various sea life. They also kinda gave it teeth on the bow like a mouth coming to swollow you.

The myth of Hades is a powerful and meaningful one. Fact or fiction, could it be that the change of Hades from a land of the living to the land of the dead in ancient mythology, parallel a real underworld location?

every time I talk about historical context with potc I need to put a disclaimer, but there’s something very haunting about the way Elizabeth’s, Will’s, and James’ personal journeys all coincide with the piracy act (which granted colonial governors the authority to hang pirates on site instead of sending them back to England). how many pirates must have made the Atlantic crossing in the opposite direction before them. how it’s not ultimately law and Englishness and Moral Righteousness that destroys the pirates, but commerce.

A burning being with some vampiric traits. As an additional note, if one manages to find her skin and rub it with salt or hot peppers, she can be killed as this will prevent her from reentering her skin.

Elizabeth Swann is the daughter of Aphrodite. Aphrodite, who fell in love with the wife of a governor, who was beautiful and joyful and so full of life the goddess could not resist.
Aphrodite, born from the sea. Elizabeth, who loves so deeply it hurts, loves Will, loves the adventure, loves Jack, loves the freedom and chases those things because what else is she supposed to do? Elizabeth, who feels more at home on the sea than on land, who surrounds herself with men who are ruled by their desires. Elizabeth, who is loved by all who meet her, who are captivated by her the moment they lay eyes on her. Elizabeth, who does everything and anything for her love, for her Will, for her freedom. Elizabeth, who is too wild and fierce for a normal life. Who is kind and vicious and spontaneous and cruel because love is all of these things and more. Who refuses to let a man bind her, rule her, because her mother is a goddess so no mortal has that right.
Elizabeth, born of Aphrodite, born of the sea, who loves loves and chases. Who wants and takes and keeps because the whole world is hers for the taking.

Got to talking about how Jack Harkness was somewhere between Ace Rimmer and Zap Brannigan.
Threw in Jack Sparrow cause it seemed appropriate.

Open to suggestions for those fill ins. Landed on Loki (Marvel), Zeus (just classic mythology), and Seahawk (She-ra princess of power)
