I’m Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy
i have been meaning to read this since it was released last year and am embarrassed to be so late to the party! 😂
jennette mccurdy is one brave woman, and i found her raw words and unapologetic delivery nothing short of inspiring. i listened to this as an audiobook on spotify, and i’m so glad i did because getting to actually hear jennette mccurdy tell her story was even more powerful. this book made me laugh, tear up and boil with anger, and i look forward to what she brings to the writing world next.

Michael Sheen is captivating in this epic production that marries 18th century Vienna with the Beatles circa Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band
You could be forgiven for thinking that this latest production of Amadeus had reworked Peter Shaffer’s 1979 Tony Award-winning play into a one-man show, so thoroughly does acclaimed Welsh actor Michael Sheen dominate the marketing material. And you’d only be half-wrong. At times there are around 40 people on stage together, but Sheen’s turn as the preening, pompous, guilt-wracked, self-aggrandising Antonio Salieri is so captivating you find yourself having to drag your attention away from him even when he’s simply sitting quietly in a chair on stage while the action of the scene plays out away from him.
When we first meet Salieri the once-revered composer is a withered old man, dressed in a wig and a red robe reminiscent of Gary Oldman’s first appearance in Bram Stoker’s Dracula. And much like that film, Amadeus tells the tale of a devout man who declares a war on God. In Salieri’s case, it is unquenchable professional jealousy that drives his mutiny against heaven; on meeting the prodigiously talented Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Rahel Romahn, recently seen on screen in Here Out West and excellent here) at a salon in music-obsessed 18th century Vienna, he simply cannot reconcile the man’s unarguable compositional genius with his boorish, scandalous behaviour. Aghast at the injustice that God would grant such talent to such a man, he resolves to destroy Mozart – to strike back at God, he tells us, not for any mere personal grudge. If you say so, Salieri.

...this is 18th century Vienna by way of the Beatles circa Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band
From there we flash back to see how Mozart’s fortunes wane even as his talent swells, all down to Salieri’s Machiavellian machinations at the court of Emperor Joseph II (Toby Schmidt of Black Sails, fantastically foppish in Hugh-Laurie-in-Blackadder mode) – who loves music as long as it doesn’t have too many notes, and whose mercurial whims can spell fortune or disaster for all around him.
It all plays out on an impressively deep stage designed by Michael Scott-Mitchell that caters to expansive crowd scenes, yet also conveys an almost claustrophobic intimacy during the dramatic two or three-hander scenes. Indeed, Amadeus is something of a chamber piece, and it’s interesting to wonder how it might play out on a smaller stage than the Opera House’s (spectacular, have no doubt) recently refurbished Concert Hall. There’s a tension between the scope of the story and the scale of the production.
The splendid costumes by Anna Cordingley and local fashion legends Romance Was Born take no prisoners, evoking the OTT court fashions of the time and then some – this is 18th century Vienna by way of the Beatles circa Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Veteran actor Sean O’Shea’s outfit as Baron Gottfried van Swieten, frenemy to both Salieri and Mozart, is impressively peacockish. Salieri’s dourness and religiosity is conveyed by his comparatively sober black and silver ensemble, while Mozart looks like he can barely be convinced to dress himself, his sleeves loose and ragged.
There’s not a bum note in the cast (if we can’t use music puns here, where can we?) and Lily Balatincz is particularly impressive as Mozart’s increasingly desperate wife Constanz, bringing nuance to what could have been a rote victim role. But this is Sheen’s show, make no mistake.
Back at the dawn of his career, Sheen took on the role of Mozart opposite David Suchet’s Salieri in a landmark production that took him from the West End’s Old Vic to Broadway and Los Angeles, so there’s a pleasing symmetry to him essaying Salieri now. It’s an immensely challenging role, the character bearing the burden of attention for almost the entire two-hour and fifteen minute running time (a 20 minute, slightly-too-short intermission included). But Sheen handles it beautifully, adjusting his posture and changing his accent to embody both the elder (who has reverted to his native Lombardy accent) and younger court composer. Crucially, Sheen has the charisma to make us, his audience and confessor, complicit. Salieri is one of the great villain-protagonists of the stage, and while Shaffer’s deft writing does a lot to help us connect with this self-crucified man through his pettiness and hypocrisy, there needs be considerable charm in play to seal the deal and make us want to spend a little under three hours in his company. Sheen, wrapping himself around Shaffer’s delicious dialogue like a mongoose around a cobra, has it in spades.

This is a superb production from director Craig Ilott (Smoke and Mirrors, American Idiot) and Red Line Productions, who manage the transition from their usual cosy environs of the Old Fitz to the Concert Hall with aplomb, anchored by a sublime, textured performance. If you make this your first show of 2023, you’ll be giving the rest of the year a lot to live up to.
Amadeus is playing until January 21, 2023, as part of the Sydney Opera House’s mammoth calendar of events for its 50th anniversary celebration.

Some girls say no. Some boys don’t listen. This is one of those books I consider #requiredreading - it’s both a good book and an important topic. I first read it when i was still in middle school, so this was really my first book about a really serious topic, and every reread since has packed just as much of a punch. Above all else, this is a book about healing, and all of its highs and lows. Patty Blount crafts characters that leap right off the page. I rooted for Grace, I cried for Grace, and I cringed for Grace, sometimes all in one chapter. Basically, everyone should read this book, not only because it’s important, but also because it’s just plain good.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ 👭🏳️‍🌈🚔 So I may be a bit biased here, considering I know this first time author very well. Because of that fact, I know the author poured her heart and soul into this book, almost literally, as she modelled Elsie and Lu and their pasts on herself. The storyline follows the two girls as they fall in love with each other, from the moment they first meet. Most would argue that they are complete opposites, considering Elsie is practically a recluse and Lu is a bad@ss, 🔪 welding, motorbike riding, knows what she wants, and will get what she wants when she wants it gal. I guess that's why they call it love at first sight and opposites attract. You follow along as they get up to mischief, and find themselves in tricky situations. The story is so well written, that you can feel what the characters are feeling as if you were them. The 👅🤌 scenes were 🔥🔥🔥🥵🥵 Thank you @jcroweauthor Buy it here
Please check TW before reading. 18+ recommend.

So, I had ordered this belt on Amazon a few days ago. Today, it arrived. I grabbed the package on my way into the house after work, and as I walked into the kitchen to put away my lunchbox, flipped on the light. When I did so, the light began to flicker.
"Grab the salt!" shouted my son. Remembering this package in my hands, I said with a grin,
"I have something better!" And with that, I ripped open the package. The moment it was opened, the light stopped flickering. So I guess I truly am warded and protected now. Thanks, Amazon.

This is the book that I needed when I was younger.
Zachary Ying hasn't really learned about the stories related to his Chinese heritage. He's busy trying to survive middle school, somewhere he already feels out of place as one of the few Asian Americans there, and playing Mythrealm, a game on his AR headset. However, when the First Emperor of China possesses his AR headset and Zack's mom's soul gets taken by demons, Zack has to journey across China to save his mom and prevent all the spirits from the underworld from flooding the mortal realm.
The way that Chinese historical events and Chinese mythology blended together with the sci-fi aspect of AR technology was really well done. I enjoyed reading about references to stories and other small pieces of Chinese culture that I grew up with - Sun Wukong, Nezha, the poems of Li Bai, the dragon boat festival - on and on, this book made me smile at all the pieces of familiarity brought to life in a new adventure.
Since the basis of this story includes a few famous emperors throughout Chinese history (as revived by legends of their lives), there's a lot of great commentary on what it means to be good versus bad, especially as a leader. All of these leaders did terrible and great things, all in different ways, and I'm glad that there was plenty of exploration on that front.
And the cliffhanger! I can't wait to read the next book in the series.
A thank you to Simon and Schuster Children's Publishing, Margaret K. McElderry Books, and NetGalley for the ARC.

daisy jones and the six - taylor jenkins reid
★★★★★
this book was utterly stunning. it provided great visuals - i could see the lives of daisy jones and her co-characters unfolding in front of me with incredible ease. it was captivating and i struggled to put it down.
all of the characters were fleshed out perfectly and whilst reading, one can tell that reid had planned every small detail of this book. the plot was exciting and new - like nothing i have never read before. i felt a connection to these characters, as though i knew them thanks to reid’s storytelling. the relationships were unique and beautiful whilst staying realistic.
to my knowledge, it portrayed addiction incredibly well, and i felt an immense sympathy for all the characters included in this book. whilst daisy jones & the six does cover some dark themes, it does so in a refreshing way, allowing the reader to understand what struggling with addiction is like whilst also avoiding the dark and gritty writing that is so prevalent in a lot of today’s fiction.
i absolutely adored how all of the characters being interviewed were not always reliable sources. they would contradict one another and struggle to remember events at times, adding an extra layer of intrigue into the book.
i didn’t want this book to end, but i devoured it - picking it up every spare moment that i had. i would recommend this book to everyone i know, but i would also recommend checking the trigger warnings before reading, as it covers topics such as addiction, abortion and adultery. (there may be some more i’ve forgotten so please do your research!)
overall, it was enigmatic and new, covering dark themes whilst still managing to stay fun and exciting.

Hey! Heh Ryka Aoki. If you're going to write a book about how amazing donuts are (and aliens, demons, being trans and music but whatever) then you should include a coupon for donuts. So I can get some donuts. Bc I want donuts.
Also 3 books down for The Trans Rights Read-a-thon in one day.
To Bright to See by Kyle Lukoff was a short but intense middle reader about a kid named Bug who's having a crappy summer. They live in a haunted house that just got a lot more active, their beloved uncle died, middle schools starting in a few months, their moms business is struggling and their only friend is going full "girl mode" on them. On turns spooky, heartbreaking and sweet, I adored it. 5 stars!
Magical Boy vol 1 by The Kao. Holy fuck did I hurt everytime Max is dead named and misgendered. But this kid, his friends! They rock. Every kick in the gut you feel when his mom scolds him for not being girly enough (or at all since gd Max is a guy and gay and kind of a "It's clobberin' time' kinda dude) his friends are there to pump him up and affirm him. 5 stars!
Magical Boy vol 2 is the conclusion (Holy shit do we Stan a tight story that isn't bogged down w bs it sell more issues) we see the minions of Devoid getting bigger, bolder and parents are trying and ultimately get it right. And the lore! My friends, you will not be disappointed by the lore. Even if Max is a little Blaise about the whole thing. Another 5 stars!
