Instagram Book Review:
I was home sick over the long weekend, and while I mostly played The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, I did finish one book. I read Graceling by Kristin Cashore since I received her Graceling book series for the holidays. I just sat in the couch with my favorite blanket and read between naps.
First impressions:
- There could have been more boats and Lienid pirates. I loved them.
- The romantic interest is interesting, but theres no commonplace tropes if that's what you're expecting (and I'm a sucker for happy marriage honestly)
- The horses have no names or personalities, which is too bad because they do an awful lot of demanding work with no complaint.
- and names of certain characters are wonderfully absurd
It's overall a great start to a series, and I took the second book, Fire, to work with me. I'm excited to see what develops in this world.
(a more in depth review is on my Goodreads)

Finished Never a Hero and am honestly shocked not more people are talking about this series. I read the first book when it debuted last year and couldn’t wait for this second installment. If you’ve read it, I need someone to talk to about this book!!

Book Blurb: The stunning sequel to Daughter of the Moon Goddess delves deeper into beloved Chinese mythology, concluding the epic story of Xingyin—the daughter of Chang’e and the mortal archer, Houyi—as she battles a grave new threat to the realm, in this powerful tale of love, sacrifice, and hope. After winning her mother’s freedom from the Celestial Emperor, Xingyin thrives in the enchanting tranquility of her home. But her fragile peace is threatened by the discovery of a strange magic on the moon and the unsettling changes in the Celestial Kingdom as the emperor tightens his grip on power. While Xingyin is determined to keep clear of the rising danger, the discovery of a shocking truth spurs her into a perilous confrontation.Forced to flee her home once more, Xingyin and her companions venture to unexplored lands of the Immortal Realm, encountering legendary creatures and shrewd monarchs, beloved friends and bitter adversaries. With alliances shifting quicker than the tides, Xingyin has to overcome past grudges and enmities to forge a new path forward, seeking aid where she never imagined she would. As an unspeakable terror sweeps across the realm, Xingyin must uncover the truth of her heart and claw her way through devastation—to rise against this evil before it destroys everything she holds dear, and the worlds she has grown to love . . . even if doing so demands the greatest price of all.
Review:
The daughter of the Moon Goddess, finally reunited with her mother after freeing her mother from her imprisonment and healing from the betrayal from both her love interest must now face off against the Celestial Kingdom who threatens to destroy everything she holds dear... and she must choose between the two love interests that are once again in her life as she faces off against a new evil.  Xingyin is still reeling from the betrayal of Wenzhi, who still haunts her dreams and visits her while also dealing with her feelings for Liwei, the prince. Wenzhi is the prince of the demon realm who trapped her but she defeated him, yet now he comes back begging for her forgiveness, telling her he regrets everything and that the only thing that matters to him is her. He’ll do anything she wants yet she is firm in her refusal of him. She firmly believes that he broke her trust, thus forever closing the door to anything between them. Now there is Liwei, the prince who was betrothed to someone else and wanted her to remain his mistress but now he is no longer betrothed but his family is bent on killing her and her family. Despite everything Xingyin is in love with both of them, despite the entire book being her denying and refusing Wenzhi and trying to stay firm in her love for Liwei ( obviously I am all for Wenzhi, honestly, Liwei is as bland as they come and the guy had basically zero character growth, I just didn’t like him despite him being considered the sweeter love interest). Wenzhi on the other hand is willing to do anything for her to get her to see that he loves her. While this back and forth is going on in the love triangle, there is also the issue that the Celestial Kingdom has kicked out Xingyin and her family, they are being hunted, a evil rises that wants to destroy them, and she might have found her father whom she thought was dead. Xingyin must find a way to save those she holds dear and finally pick a path for herself and who she wants to be and who she wants to be with. Overall it was an okay ending to the series, in terms of the love interests, the one I wanted ended up doing nicely so yeah, in the end it all worked out.

Revisiting The Secret Warrior Series #YA #Fantasy #Romance
I pondered the concept behind the Secret Warrior Series for years as it took shape in my mind. My love of history, fantasy, and my fascination with the mountain people and Native Americans is at the heart of the series. Living in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia surrounded by mountains veiled in mist and mystery lent itself well to creating the characters and setting for YA fantasy romance, The…

Reign Returned by Katie Keridan
Reign Returned by Katie Keridan is a young adult fantasy novel that takes you to the land of the dead and brings you back again and again. Kyra, the most talented Astral healer of her generation, is set to follow in her father's footsteps and use her gifts to lead the healers of Aeles. Her careful plans are derailed when her father passes unexpectedly and she discovers she has a forbidden ability to recover those who’ve died before their time. Kyra knows she needs to learn more, but the realm has destroyed all literature relating to her new talents. She does however come across a mysterious sick boy in the woods who has a book that could answer all her questions. As a Daeval assassin from Nocens, Sebastian did not expect to sneak into Aeles and come across a healer like Kyra. He has spent his life looking for someone with powers like hers and now that they have met, he will not let her go without asking her to help him recover a legendary sword. The healer and the assassin have more than just their professions dividing them, but they cannot help but feel comfortable around each other. They will have to overcome forbidden magic, history, and romance if they want to accomplish their goals and survive the process. This is the first book in a new ya fantasy series that is very lore-forward. If you are interested in new world-building this might be the book for you. It took me a minute to pin down the feel of the world because buildings have things like glass doors and modern sounding convinces and yet Sebastian lives in a cave, and there is no detail of electronic devices. The fantasy world reminds me of Winterkeep by Kristin Cashore. Of course, I may have also been influenced by the magical animal-esque companions each magic user has a telepathic Cypher who guides them in life. Animal friends are always welcomed in my book. The world also has a political conflict that strictly divides Aeles and Daeval. The realms are divided and both groups have prejudices against the other. While they both have social differences, with Daeval leaning more individualist and Aeles leaning more collectivist based on the first book, the largest difference between the two is their opinions on gender and sexuality, with a queer-friendly Daeval and a homophobic Aeles. Same-sex relationships are illegal in Aeles, so if you’re looking for a queer-norm fantasy this is not it. I would have loved to spend more time in the communities as a way of understanding the world. Because the book focuses on the cross-cultural relationship between Kyra and Sebastian, they tend to explain things to each other instead. It makes sense for this book (mostly because they have a secret relationship that takes place mostly in a cave), but I would love to see how the world opens up as they continue their quest. If you are a fan of reincarnation, soulmates, and slow-burn relationships, Kyra and Sebastian are the couple for you. Their relationship is built on trust, shared dreams, and a shared goal. With their Cyphers, they have almost built-in chaperones. They are defiantly an opposites-attract kind of pairing. Although they both have a fixed sense of justice, high intelligence, and close relationships with death, Kyra has had the benefit of wealth, family, and class privilege. Sebastian has had essentially the opposites in all regards. He is an assassin who lives in a cave after all, and you don’t get there in a YA book without a very specific backstory. I had a lovely time with the magical mystery in Reign Returned by Katie Keridan. If you love reincarnation, necromantic magic, or slow burn ya fantasy romance, this is the book for you. I would like to thank Sparkpress for providing my reviewer's copy of Reign Returned by Katie Keridan in exchange for my honest review.

My Thoughts on Ruthless Vows (Letters of Enchantment, Book 2) by Rebecca Ross
Ruthless Vows by Rebecca Ross is the second book in the Letters of Enchantment duology. I wanted to read this immediately after finishing Divine Rivals due to the cliffhanger that book left things off with. If you have not read Divine Rivals, I would recommend you check that book out first as there will be spoilers for the ending of that book during my review as I discuss the beginning of…

Cultural Maritime and Shadow and Bone
Having finished the second season of Shadow and Bones, I finally put together some notes on the fantasy maritime in the Netflix adaptation of the Grishaverse. Noting that I haven't myself read the book series yet; having seen the use of land, air, and sea vessels, I'm excited to read!
Check out the book series by @/lbardugo (on instagram) if you're interested as well. I hope to do a book review for both the trilogy and the duology soon.
Also, check out this text if you can:

How many ways can I draw this couple kissing? I found a ton of these while putting together my 2023 artvsartist grid. Way more than what's here, but these are the ones that I like, that have no background, and won't get me banned on social media haha

Book Blurb: “An addictive, action-packed, scorcher of a read!” —#1 New York Times bestselling author Alyson Noël Some shadows protect you…others will kill you in this dazzling new fantasy series from award-winning author Abigail Owen. Everything about my life is a lie. As a hidden twin princess, born second, I have only one purpose—to sacrifice my life for my sister if death comes for her. I’ve been living under the guise of a poor, obscure girl of no standing, slipping into the palace and into the role of the true princess when danger is present. Now the queen is dead and the ageless King Eidolon has sent my sister a gift—an eerily familiar gift—and a proposal to wed. I don’t trust him, so I do what I was born to do and secretly take her place on the eve of the coronation. Which is why, when a figure made of shadow kidnaps the new queen, he gets me by mistake. As I try to escape, all the lies start to unravel. And not just my lies. The Shadowraith who took me has secrets of his own. He struggles to contain the shadows he wields—other faces, identities that threaten my very life. Winter is at the walls. Darkness is looming. And the only way to save my sister and our dominion is to kill Eidolon…and the Shadowraith who has stolen my heart.
Review:
Twin princesses, one who lives as queen and the other who lives as a body double... meant only to sacrifice her life for her sister if her sister is ever in danger. Meren has lived her entire life under the disguise of a poor girl with no standing but slips into the palace to visit her sister if there is ever danger. Meren has spent her life hidden, knowing she is second best. Training and living in the desert, she yearns for more, for a life of her own. When the queen dies and Meren’s sister is to be crowned queen a proposal from the ageless King Eidolon has come.., suspiciously right after the death of the queen. King Eidolon is known for his treachery and yet Meren’s sister can’t help but believe in his better nature and Meren will do everything to stop the wedding from happening... yet before she can she is kidnapped by a figure made of shadow who mistakes her for her sister. The figure is actually Reven, the Shadowraith who has been kidnapping people... but he asks her to help him and that there is much more going on with the disappearing people than she initially thought. Reven need’s her help in saving his people as he knows Meren’s secret, her abilities over sand and that she could be the key to saving his people... except he is under the guise that she is her sister. Meren will have to navigate through lies, deciding who she can trust, and her feelings for the Shadowraith who has stolen her heart. This was such a fun read! I had a great time reading it and I loved Meren as a protagonist. The romance between her and Reven was great and the overall arc of the story was well done, I absolutely can’t wait for the second book!! I NEED IT!!!! Meren has lived her entire life knowing she is nothing more than a sacrifice but when she is finally given space to just be herself, to show true self to someone, it’s just wonderful. Meren and Reven work well together, they’re both people burdened with powers and duties and things that make it hard for them to truly show another themself, but together they connect and understand one another. The ending has me so excited for the next book. and I AM BEGGING FOR MORE REVEN POV!!! Overall if you love enemies to lovers, political intrigue, action, and romance, this is definitely for you!
