The Last of the Hyrulian Knights

Inspired by this post from earlier today (or yesterday, but that was only an hour ago so shhh).

It was supposed to be Wars and Legend bonding, but I accidentally just threw the boys into watching Legend reunite with two of his idiot besties from his adventures, both of which hated him for a while.

Also, important note] I'm not shipping Ralph and Legend, bt if you want to I won't stop you. Ralph is just bad at showing fondness for his frenemy as far as I'm concerned, but hey! so is John Watson, and people ship him with Sherlock, so go nuts if you please.

It started with Wars telling a story. Well, Wind started off telling the story, but that was only because he wanted Warriors to tell it. Okay, that doesn’t make sense, he’ll explain. He wanted Warriors to talk to the others more about the War and the antics they had gotten up to during their down time, so, naturally, he had gone about butchering the story so badly that Warriors had had to shut him up and explain things properly to the other, very confused, heroes of courage.

Wind had to hide a smirk behind a put-on scowl as Warriors’ soft tenor rumbles out over camp, recounting a particular incident regarding a rose bush, seven knights and a hairbrush. The captain is a masterful story weaver, and his voice is making Wild nod off where he sits leaning against the log the older man is sitting on, head tilting dangerously close to just falling into Warriors’ lap as the captain’s hand brushes unconsciously through long blonde hair.

The other heroes similarly seem to have been lulled into relaxing by Wars’ voice, which had been the sailor’s intent all along after their last battle and the injuries and mishaps of it all. Hyrule and Legend have laid off scolding each other, and Four has relaxed in his place, whetstone falling still as his eyes shine in the firelight, like the waves lapping at the bay of Outset when the night lanterns are lit. Sky is slumped up against Twilight, both rancher and sky child with unfinished carvings in hand that they work at slowly, distracted by the story but unwilling to put away their tools just yet. Only Time seems properly alert anymore, back turned to the group as he focuses on the forest around them, but Wind can see the tell-tale traces of a smile pulling at the man’s face, even if he sits with his bad side to the sailor.

It’s calm, peaceful, comfortable, as Warriors closes out his tale, gaze distant and a charming smile pulling at his face as he speaks. “Needless to say, that particular prank landed Mask in a world of trouble with General Impa, but it served as an excellent trust exercise all around, thus providing him with yet another excuse to get out of a punishment with.”

“Sounds like this kid was quite the handful.” Time rumbles, not bothering to turn around and face the others as he spoke, the hint of laughter touching his voice.

“He was.” Wars nods, wistful. “I miss him sometimes though, wonder what happened when he traveled back.”

“You weren’t relieved to not have to deal with him?” Legend inquires, pausing from gnawing something or other- was that grass?- as he gazes up at the captain.

Warriors laughs. “He was a piece of work, I’ll grant that, but,” Royal blue sparkled fondly as Wars trails his hands through Wild’s hair, watching the Champion’s eyelids flutter softly. “He was my piece of work, and I was happy to deal with him. A bit put out at times, but I was willing to deal with it. He was a great kid.”

“Clever too.” Wind adds, grinning over at the veteran hero. “That was just one of his pranks, he pulled a thousand of them on the others. The knights could never get the best of him.”

Legend snorts, swallowing whatever he was eating (seriously, was he eating grass? Wild just made them a full meal an hour ago!) to grin up at the sailor from his hunched over position. “Doesn’t take much to do that. Knights are stupid folk; you don’t have to try too hard to get the best of them.”

“I should think I did alright.” Warriors’ voice rings with the slightest hint of indignation as he cocks a brow.

Legend shrugs, sitting back with a careless expression. “You may have and you may not have. Kids are slippery little devils, captain, they tend to know things no one wants them to know.” The vet’s smirk pulls wider, a wild oat twitching between his lips as he speaks around it (so he was chewing on grass of a sort, good grief). “One of those things happens to be tricking adults into thinking they have the upper hand.”

Wind could swear Time grins wider at those words, but he can’t be sure, not when he can’t properly see the man’s face.

“In which case, adults would be the ‘stupid folk’ as you put it so eloquently.” Warriors clips, and Wind can feel the man stiffening, even if he can’t really see it in the dim light.

Legend doesn’t seem overly affected by the captain’s change of tone. “Nah. Adults aren’t all bad, knights though,” A scowl mars the vet’s otherwise lovely face as he stares up at the night sky, slumping back to lean on his elbows. “Tch, knights are monstrous oafs, and that’s me restraining myself.”

“Legend,” Twilight rumbles, drawing the gazes of his brothers. “Wars is a knight, Sky too.”

Violet sparks in the dying light of the fire, snapping with hesitation as Legend levels a look at the stiffened captain. “Won’t count that against you I guess.” The man hums, gaze turning away again as the line of his shoulders stiffens.

Silence hangs over them for a moment at those words, and Wind winces at the disapproving look that Twilight casts to the vet before sighing and shaking his head. “He ain’t all wrong, cap. Most knights in my time ain’t worth their weight in oats either.” The rancher’s eyes glitter with something warm as he forces a smile. “But that’s them. You’re a decent fellow, I dare say.”

“A decent fellow, eh?” Warriors’ smile is put on, a mask that Wind knows too well and hates, as the captain turns to Twilight, grinning too wide and too bright. “Why, I think that’s the nicest thing you’ve said about me, rancher!”

“Don’t let it get to your head.” Twilight jabs back, rolling his eyes.

And just like that, it blows over, Four chiming in with his own experience to share regarding training with his father’s knights as a kid, and Sky also adding in a few of his own adventures from his days in the academy. As they speak Warriors relaxes again, a warm smile touching his face, real this time, as he runs his hands through the sleeping Champion’s hair. It makes Wind release a silent sigh of relief to see his brother calm again, but when he glances over to Legend that relief fades. The pink-haired hero’s eyes are downcast, dark with shadows as he stares at the hands he’s clasped in his lap, shoulders tense and jaw set and- Wind has to wince- teeth grinding together.

It isn’t the first time Legend has said something about knights that has made Warriors tense, nor the first time someone has reminded the vet that many of their number had been, or were, knights themselves. It doesn’t change anything though, although Legend has stopped outright insulting knights and instead reverted to subtly making jabs at them. It still hurts the others though, and no amount of scolding, even from Time, has made the vet let up.

There isn’t really anything to be done about it, Wind supposes. No one could make the vet stop hating knights, although Wind did wonder why it was that Legend bore such hatred for the men dedicated to Hyrule’s protection.

It is only a couple of days later when a portal carries them off to another world, one that Legend quickly identifies as his own the moment they spy any sort of civilization.

“That doesn’t look like your Castletown.” Hyrule hums, brows furrowing slightly as he frowns at the glittering city spread out in the valley below. Legend only shrugs the words off though.

“Because it’s not. We aren’t in Hyrule.”

“Where are we then?” Time presses, giving Four a hand down a steeper section of the path as the smithy’s small feet skid in the loose shale beneath them.

“Labrynnia.” Legend calls back, taking the lead and moving down towards the glimmering city, and after a few confused expressions are exchanged, the others follow suit, Wind darting up and after his elder brother.

Even just looking down on it, the city, still unnamed until Legend deems them worthy of the knowledge, is huge, bigger than anything except maybe Castletown in Warriors’ time, and even then, the place shines with colors and architecture that Wind didn’t even realize existed. Despite the glory around them though, Legend seems entirely unphased as he leads them through the marvelous gates and into the bustling streets full of townsfolk and outsiders bustling around and doing business.

For a brief moment, Wind finds himself wondering if Legend even knows what he’s doing, or where he’s going, but then his trail of though is interrupted because the vet is skidding to a stop in front of him, and when Wind looks up it’s too see that a horse and rider have pulled up almost on top of the vet’s toes.

“Well, well, well. If it isn’t the last of the Hyrulian Knights.” The rider drawls, staring down with hooded eyes and a smirk on his face as he glances over all of them. “And what’s this rabble, more circus folk?”

The vet stiffens, gaze flattening as he stares up at the rider. “Ralph.”

The other man huffs. “What, no hello? No, ‘how do you do’? Really, if you want to keep that splendid little reputation you have here,” The words are almost spit as the red-headed stranger scowls “then maybe you should show some respect.”

“Oh, forgive me, your royal clutzness.” Legend grumbles out. “I didn’t realize your riding skills had become so poorly over the last few years. Mayhaps Raven was right after all to leave you in the care of the farmers, for you do ride like one.” The airy tone of the later words and the smirk that pulls at their brother’s face is such a drastic change from the near violent expression a moment before that it nearly gives Wind whiplash.

The words earn an affronted sound from the rider, who sits with his mouth hanging open before sighing heavily, the stiff set of his frame loosening as he shakes his head. “You haven’t changed in the least bit, have you.”

“Nor you.” Legend drawls, smirking again. “Still head over heels for Nayru, or have you chosen another lady to drown in your fancies?”

“Says the one in love with Din.” The stranger, Ralph, replies sullenly, adjusting his hold on his reins. “I trust you will visit this time? Mother would absolutely adore having the last of the chosen knights at court again. She boasted about it for ages to Lord Cavrin last time.”

And Legend just smirks again, just cocks his head coyly, not meeting the gaze of the other as he settles his hands on his hips. “Maybe I’ll drop by. I’ve others to see here though, and a great many other things to do.”

The red-head huffs, a dark flush dusting his cheeks, nearly the same color as his hair. “I would...also enjoy speaking with you again, if that would weigh in at all on your decision.”

Legend blinks, miming surprise as he touches a hand to his collar. “Really now! With such a greeting as that-”

“I’ve missed our sparring and wish to do it again.” The horseman interrupts with a scowl, suddenly flipping back to coldness. “Turn it down if you will, it is little to me what your choice is. However, if you do see fit to come, be sure to be in proper order for once.” Boots, which tell Wind far more about this man then his voice, kick at the horse’s sides. “I would think that you of all people would have some clue of how to dress.” And then the man is gone, his mare prancing off into the crowd and leaving the heroes staring after him as Legend grins, actually grins, and shakes his head.

“Incompetent ass.” The words are harsh, but the tone fonder than Wind expects Legend meant it to be as he watched the red-head disappear into the crowd.

“Well, you’ll go, right?” It’s not one of the others that asks, but instead one of the other people in the street, many of whom have stopped apparently to watch the interaction.

Legend shrugs “If it strikes my fancy.” Pink brows furrow. “He still owes me a fortune from last time as it is.”

“Betting?” Wild prods, and at the vet’s nod of agreement the champion shakes his head. “Called it.”

“Can we go back.” Warriors stammers, and for a moment Wind finds himself wondering what has his brother staring at Legend like the other hero has grown a second head. “Did he just call you a knight?”

He had! And as the realization sinks in Wind whips around to stare at Legend, this time in shock and confusion that easily matches Warriors’ own as the vet shifts uncomfortably under their gaze.

“That he did.” Another of the town folk chuckles. “Link’s a bashful sort, not one to flaunt his titles, but this lad’s the finest of all the knights Hyrule’s had in a good age. Knighted by the princess herself they say, and by the blessing of the Oracles themselves to boot!”

Wind stares harder, his eyes nearly popping out of their sockets as Legend flushes dark pink and opens his mouth to respond, likely to correct the townsfolk, only to have another voice call out of the crowd. "Don’t forget the last of the chosen sect! Blathering idiot’s the only decent one of the lot!”

And again they turn, and again Wind finds himself staring as a young woman darts through the crowd to snatch Legend into a chokehold, grinning wildly and musing his hair as the vet kicks and stammers out weak protests.

“And who are you?” Time only sounds the least bit surprised and Wind would like to know how that’s possible because he’s still mentally reeling.

“I thought you hated knights!” The words explore out of his mouth before he has a second to stop them. “But you are one? One of a special order or some shit? What the heck, vet?”

“Special order, royal descent, all the blither blather.” The strange woman chuckles, finally letting Legend go and promptly wincing as he kicks her in the shins.

The vet’s face is bright pink, almost darker than the hair that’s standing up in all directions as he swipes his hat back of the ground with a huff. “Stupid fox.”

“Dumb bunny.” Comes the reply, and bright eyes glisten as they turn to the group, brows raising in approval as the woman smirks, sly and wide and very much like the foxes from all of Granny’s stories. “Who are these gents, Linky-loo? Bunch of softies out of the countryside, or another rag tag band of misfits who’ve been tugged along with you on a quest?”

That piques his curiosity even more, how does this woman guess that right off? Are they really that obvious or is this something Legend ends up doing a lot? Whichever it is, Wind is employing Wild and Hyrule to help him convince Legend to tell them a few stories alter, even if takes them hours of begging.

Legend scowls even darker, stuffing his hat back on over his messy hair and jabbing a finger in the woman’s direction. “First of all, you followed me. That rag tag band of misfits was because a thief decided to stalk a kid through enemy territory, and the second group was mostly animals-”

“And the third was a knight, a prince and a goddess, we’ve all heard the tales, Link.” The girl smirks. “Now give us this story, morning glory. Or your rupee pouch gives me one at the local bar.” Said pouch is held up in the veteran’s face as the woman swings it back and forth, a grin on her features as Legend rolls his eyes, not even bothering to check himself at the apparent theft and instead snatching for the bag and squeak-growling when it’s held up over his head and out of his reach.

“Pardon the interruption.” Warriors stammers, blinking and falling into an all too familiar and perfect parade rest. “But who are you?”

The woman smiles, bright and sharp and not particularly friendly as she swings Legend’s rupee pouch a bit higher. “Name’s Ghanti, I’m a friend of the short-stack here.”

“Not short.” Legend huffs through his hair, glaring up as Ghanti grins down at him, only for the woman to be startled as Legend jumps up with a sudden force that propels him high enough to not only grab his pouch but also knock against his antagonizer and throw her off balance. She stumbles as Legend lands, and the vet carefully replaces his money bag as he glares at his supposed friend. “This is why I never come here, you asses always make a production out of it.”

Ghanti grins, sharp and bright but playful this time as she rubs her now slightly bruised face. “Someone has to know you down a peg once and a while, your royal high ass.”

“Good to know.” Legend drawls.

Wind huffs, fights off a pout because he’s an adult soon and pouting is something only kids and Legend do. “You gonna explain stuff to us, or are you gonna keep flirting?” The shocked flush of both the vet and his friend’s cheeks is almost worth the confusion that’s drowning all of them at the moment, but then Legend is shooting him a scowl and ushering them all off into a building that, upon entering, turns out to be a pub.

They find their seats as Legend tosses a couple rupees at Ghanti, who promptly heads towards the bar near the front while the rest of them settle.

“Hope you like the hard stuff, it’s all she ever orders.” Legend grouses, tugging off his hat and fixing his hair with a sigh as the other eight heroes stare at him expectantly.

“So,” Twilight drawls after the vet has spent a couple of minutes ignoring them, something Wind doesn’t appreciate at all. “Gonna explain, Ledge?”

He nods, frowning over at Legend, who is the same height as him now that they’re sitting and the vet’s long legs are tucked under him. “Yeah, who’s your girlfriend?”

Again, his words make the vet stutter to a stop for a moment before the older boy is staring at him with an expression that is neither disgust nor confusion but an ugly combination of the two that would almost make him laugh if he wasn’t so irritatingly curious. He knows Legend is still processing, but he takes it as an opportunity to continue. “Also, since when were you, of all people, a knight?”

“Now I know why the captain drinks.” Legend grumbles, earning glares from the older people in the group which make the younger man roll his eyes as he adds. “I’m not going to, I was just saying.”

“Then start usin’ your sayin’ to start explainin’.” Twilight huffs, taking the mug that Ghanti has appeared next to him with and handing it off to Time. “I think we’re all dyin’ for answers ‘bout that lil’-” Twilight’s hand flutters, as if groping for the right word. “-int’raction.”

“Right.” The vet runs his hand through his hair again.

“Start with the knight thing.” Wind demands, and he knows it’s rude and Granny would scold, but he’s getting impatient and his curiosity is killing him.

Legend nods, taking the drink Ghanti gives him and -after very pointedly showing it to Time to confirm that it’s not alcoholic- takes a sip. “So, you know how Fable and I are siblings?” At their nods the vet continues, not meeting the eyes of the others and thus drawing all their attention by doing so. Wind could swear that the vet is flushed, maybe even embarrassed at what he has to tell them. “Our family are the descendants of an order called the Knights of Hyrule.”

Wind frowns when he sees the cautious glance Legend shoots towards Time, and for some reason or other his brother also pushes away from the table the slightest bit.

“Long story short, they’re knights descended from the Hero of Time.” Legend mumbles, leveling said hero with a stare that dares him to react with any sort of affection. “After the hero’s death, his grandson traveled throughout the world and become the finest knight in all of Hyrule.” There’s pride ringing bright and firm in Legend’s voice as he says that part, and he raises his glass to the back of the bar, and when Wind looks it’s to see a portrait of a man he could swear is Time, without his tattoos and scars, riding a spotted black mare into battle.

Ghanti whistles sharply. “So that’s the Labrynnian hero.”

“Sire aven.” Legend grins, warm and fond like he knows the person he’s speaking about personally. “He was the founder of the order of the Hyrulian Knights, and all of his descendants after him followed in his steps.” A shadow falls over violet hues. “Until a few years back when Aganim appeared in Hyrule and slew each of them in his conquest of Hyrule.”

“My parents too.” Ghanti hums, nudging her friend’s shoulder in a display of comradery Wind honestly wasn’t expecting to see from the brash woman.

Legend shrugs it off, taking another sip of his drink. “Long of the short of is that I was the last person taught the traditions and stories of our family, and after I finished my third adventure, Fable knighted me for some reason or another. I think she just wanted me to help preserve the family legacy, I’m not a proper knight.” Legend’s face twists up in a bitter scowl at that, and Ghanti’s eyes flash dangerously as they both nod together. “Good riddance to that.”

“What’s so bad about knights?” Warriors presses, and Wind can practically feel the hurt seeping from the other hero. Wars is the best, the very best of the best, and he’s given his everything for his kingdom. Wind knows that his older brother faces hate and hurt from his own people for the war, for being one of the causes and for every one of his mistakes during it, and he can only imagine how that must hurt the captain. But to have your own brother’s hate added to the mix, to suffer their scorn, it’s almost worse than all of what they’d suffered while fighting the war itself.

“Knights are easily manipulated sell-outs who will turn their backs on their people for a chance at life themselves. They’re cowards who have no qualms in hunting children across the country with the aim to kill just because one person claims that they did something wrong! They’re evil, corrupted-” Sky’s hand on Legend’s shoulder is the only reason the vet stops, face red and hands clenching as sparks dance in his eyes.

“They’re douches.” Ghanti huffs eloquently, leaning back to sip her whisky.

“And what about Warriors?” Time rumbles, gaze blank, face emotionless as he stares at the riled-up vet, and Wind shivers as he looks at their leader. “What about Sky and Four? They’re knights, Legend.”

The vet sags in his place. “They’re different.”

“How.” Comes the pressed answer, and Wind can’t stop himself from looking up in confusion. What more could Time expect? What does he want Legend to say?

The vet doesn’t appear to have any more clue than he does, staring up at Time, and then towards Warriors, who sits in stony silence, eyes downcast and jaw set in resignation. “They’re not monsters?” Legend stammers. “They’re...shit, I guess they’re like Raven was, in a way.” Legend hunches down at those words, as if hiding from the eyes that are suddenly fixed on him as he toys with his empty glass. “Raven was willing to give his life for even the least significant of people, willing to do whatever it took to protect everyone he could, even though they weren’t Hylian. He very nearly did give his life for them.” And if Wind wasn’t sitting next to the vet he never would have caught the faint “for me” that Legend whispers softly to himself. “And he would have been willing to do so.

“Warriors is an ass, but he’s a good leader, and dedicated, but if he ever uses these words against me, I’ll take them all back.” The teen huffs. “Four’s...Four is Four. They are the only hero most of Hyrule remembers, because they gave everything, sacrificed all, to save their kingdom, even at the cost of their own-” Legend cuts off, staring up at Four suddenly in a startled manner as if not realizing how he was rambling. Four themself looks startled too, staring right back with eyes wide enough that Wind can pick out exactly where the different colors in his eyes clash against each other, green fading to blue on the left as purple and red swirl together on the right.

“And Sky?” Warriors prompts, soft and gentle in that way he only ever is when he knows that someone else is shaken. Wind is half afraid Legend will shoot the captain a dirty look for his gentle tone, but the teen only rubs his face with one hand, sighing heavily.

“Sky is the most goddess-darned gentle and innocent chickadee I’ve ever met.” Legend sighs. “He may have killed a god but he wouldn’t harm a soul.”

And as Legend continues to cover his face with his hand, Sky very visibly forces himself to not coo and hug the vet.

“As for the ass from before.” Ghanti chuckles, breaking the silence that’s descended on their table. “He’s an old friend of Linky-loo's. The two of them did some time hoppin’, goddess savin’ shit together back when they were kids. Get along like lemon grass and honeydew, but they saved the world together so...” She shrugs, grinning at the now glaring vet. “Least he never tried killing you, eh?”

Legend huffs a sigh, drawling out his reply as if the idea of someone trying to kill him is just a fact of life at this point. “Sure about that? He nearly tossed me into the sea over Nayru’s harp.” Pink hair fluffs up as the teen shakes his head. “Jealous streak a dozen miles, that one. And he’s worse than Wars about his appearance and behaviors and all sorts of shit.” The vet scoffs. “They’d get along like a house on fire.”

“Good or bad thing?” Wild questions, looking genuinely confused.

“Debatable.” Legend responds. “Now can we talk about something else? Feelings are nasty and I want to forget that I just had any.”

That earns a few laughs, and a fond look from Time that makes Legend very quickly look away and curl in on himself slightly. Trust the vet to be all huffy about receiving affection or being treated with fondness.

“Well thank Hylia for that!” Ghanti exclaims. “I thought you were dying or something, you haven’t been that expressive since you shadow shifted on me and Zelly!”

The looks that that earns make Legend groan and flop across the table dramatically as those who aren’t dying of curiosity laugh. Four in particular shakes his head, grinning in that uncannily charming and terrifying manner that they do as they look at Ghanti. “You remind me a lot of my best friend.”

“Thankee kindly.” The woman winks cheekily as she speaks, raising her glass to the smith. “Hope they wear you weary.”

Four grins, dark and knowing as he takes the glass that was set before him, raising it with a dark look in his eyes. “Trust me, it goes both ways.”

Never trust the Fae, that’s what everyone always told you. They’re tricksters, they’re evil, all they care about is corrupting humans, and you believed them. Why wouldn’t you? As a child you were told tales of the terrifying Fae with their leathery skin, red eyes and big black horns. You would wake in the night crying for your nursemaid, afraid that there would be a Fae under your bed.

The Fae were not of legend though, they were very real, you knew this from your family history. You were not an ordinary child; you were the Second Princess of the human kingdom. Your father and mother were King and Queen respectively, and your older sister was the prized Crown Princess. Four hundred years ago your ancestor, the then King, had ended the one-thousand-year war which had occurred between your kingdom and the kingdom of the Fae. He had agreed with the Fae King to end the exhausting warfare on the condition that neither people would breach the others’ land. Since then, each community had kept to itself, neither interacting with the other, but the horror stories of the Fae remained as a cautionary tale to the brave few who wished to seek them out and break the peace.

You were currently stressed beyond belief by the trauma that was the organisation of your sister’s marriage. As the Crown Princess, therefore the next in line to the throne, she had been betrothed to the most respectable and handsome man in the whole kingdom, Lord Kim Seokjin. Your parents decided that at 23 years old it was time for your sister to finally be wed to her fiancé, and that meant hours of planning and protocol. Being the Second Princess, you were to be the maid of honour, and the dress fittings were beginning to wear you down.

Another cause of stress was that you would be the next to be married. You were yet to be betrothed to anyone, probably because your father viewed you as damaged goods after the incident with the Chief Knight, Jung Hoseok. A couple of years ago, after too much wine at a festival ball, you snuck away with Hoseok to an inconspicuous corridor. The drink had blurred both of your minds and your lips had become entangled in a passionate kiss. You still remember his lips caressing your neck and your begging of him for more. This led to your father, the King and ruler of all, finding you with Hoseok’s hand up your skirt. He definitely wasn’t pleased.

Your father had to be held back from punching Hoseok in the face and the next morning he had the guards practically drag the both of you to a private room for a discussion. He decreed that this brief relationship was not to continue under any circumstances, and if you were caught again Hoseok would be banished. Of course, you didn’t listen, but after a few months the relationship fizzled out, the thrill of getting caught wearing thin. Now Hoseok was married to a beautiful maiden, but you remained on good terms.

Part of you wished you could’ve married Hoseok, at least then there wouldn’t be any nerves. The prospect of being married to someone you were incompatible with made you cringe and feel a little sick in your stomach. No other man had ever made you feel anything, they were either too irritating or too arrogant, and you found yourself fatigued with having to dance with a different suitor at every ball, if only you could marry yourself.

This is how you found yourself riding your beloved horse, Bramble, into the Border Forest. There was nothing better than a good ride to relieve stress. However, you must have gotten carried away as you now found yourself in a part of the forest that you didn’t recognise. The flowers were different here and you couldn’t remember if you passed the red handkerchief that you’d tied to a tree many years ago to alert yourself that you were near the kingdom border. You see, the forest was generally out of bounds as it was close to the Fae kingdom, but you bent the rules on a regular basis, always making sure to stop before your self-placed marker so you didn’t accidentally break the peace treaty. Before you had a chance to panic even more, a voice called to you.

“Lost?”. You looked up to see a tall man with a mullet of black and blue hair in front of you. “Oh, thank goodness,” you said, breathing a sigh of relief. “I thought I had wandered into the kingdom of the Fae.” The man frowned slightly. “You are in the lands of the Fae,” he replied. You froze, you must have gotten very carried away on your ride to come this far out, but the sight of a fellow human calmed you slightly. “Could you please lead me back to our kingdom?” you asked. “Our kingdom?” the man looked puzzled. “This is my kingdom.” “But you’re human?” you half-asked. The man shook his head and smiled slightly. “No, I am Fae,” the man clarified.

You suddenly felt incredibly nauseous. How could this man be Fae? Where were his red eyes or big horns? This man didn’t look like a monster, in fact he was beautiful, ethereal and enchanting. “You seem shocked,” he said. You nodded. “You don’t look like I imagined,” you replied. “You know? The leathery skin and red eyes.” The man laughed heartily. “Is that what they tell you in the human kingdom?” he asked through his amusement. “That’s funny. I look like a typical Fae. No red eyes here. I’m Jungkook by the way.” The man, Jungkook, outstretched his hand. You looked at it for a moment before shaking your head, unwilling to touch your enemy.

“I will not tell you my name, all you must know is that I’m the Second Princess of the human kingdom,” you said in a matter-of-fact way. Jungkook laughed again, much to your irritation. “Continue back the way you came, Princess,” you tensed slightly when he used your title, it slid from his tongue in the most exquisite way. “You will soon be back in the human lands. By the way, I am the Second Prince of the Fae. If you’re curious about what other lies your people have told you about mine, meet me here in two days’ time at sundown. I will answer any questions you have.” You didn’t answer Jungkook, fear of his kind still coursing through your veins. You merely nodded, mounted Bramble and rode back home. You told yourself there was no way you would meet Jungkook again, but you couldn’t deny how your heart pulled you towards the idea.

Despite your brain telling you to stay away from Jungkook, either your heart, or something else, pulled you towards him. Two days after your initial meeting you stood in the spot where you first met. He was yet to arrive, and you were beginning to feel uneasy. It was dark and the sounds of unfamiliar wildlife were putting you on edge. Then you saw a figure approaching, Jungkook. He was illuminated by a swarm of floating lights; it was a mesmerising sight.

“You came,” he said, his mouth forming a smile. “I did,” you replied, pulling your shawl tighter around your shoulders. As Jungkook came closer you noticed that his hair was behind his ears, this was the first difference you noticed from yourself, his ears were pointed. “Your ears,” you said. “They’re pointed.” “They are,” Jungkook spoke warmly as he moved closer. “It’s a Fae characteristic.” He came to a stop two steps in front of you, the lights still swirling around him. “How are you doing that?” you motioned around him. “The lights?” “They’re fireflies,” Jungkook replied. “Fae are a lot more in touch with nature than humans are, that’s how we get our magic.” He moved his hands in circular motions and the fireflies spread out around you both, illuminating the area you inhabited. “Please sit,” he said, lowering himself down on the grass. You nervously followed his lead, still questioning why you were here with your ancestral enemy.

“Will you tell me your name, Princess?” the prince asked, the use of your title giving you shivers once again. You stayed silent for a moment. “Y/N,” you replied, shuffling your feet in the grass. “Y/N,” Jungkook repeated. “I like it.” You didn’t really know how to respond, so you settled for nodding, another silence falling on the two of you. “I’m guessing you came because you have questions,” he said. “So, ask me something.” Plucking up your courage you decided on a question that had been troubling you since you had left two days previously. “Why didn’t you tell your king that I trespassed on Fae lands?” you asked cautiously. “It breaks the peace treaty and we’re enemies.” “Are we?” Jungkook asked immediately. “Unless I’m wrong, I only met you two days ago Y/N. How can we be enemies?” You shook your head in frustration. “You know what I mean, we’re ancestral enemies,” you bit back quickly. “You could’ve told the king and declared war on all humans by now, but you didn’t.” Jungkook smiled. “I didn’t tell my father because you obviously came here by mistake, and I’ve never met a human before,” he said. “You say we have leathery skin, but we say that you have no light within, that you’re a barren and cold people.” Your eyes widened. Of course, you knew that the Fae must have stories about humans, but you didn’t expect them to be so philosophical.

“Am I then?” you said nervously. “Am I barren and cold with no light within?” The prince looked you up and down in a way that gave you goosebumps. “No,” he finally replied. “If anything, you’re radiant and lush. Life courses through your veins.” A feeling you hadn’t experienced since your dalliances with Hoseok took hold of you. Heat rushed to your cheeks and you couldn’t look Jungkook in the face. “Please don’t feel uncomfortable in my presence,” he reassured you. “I want to learn more about you, and I sense you wish to learn more about me. I promise not to tell my father if you promise not to tell yours.” He held his hand out to you. “I promise,” you responded, taking his hand in yours. It was warm and soft, it was comforting. Even after letting go you could still feel a tingle where he had touched you. You were in trouble now.

Every week at sundown you and Jungkook would meet in the same place in the forest. On the fifth visit he had been giving you a more in-depth explanation of how Fae magic worked. “We draw our magic from nature,” he said softly, gesturing to the trees all around you. “We can use it to fight, but we can also use it to heal and even create.” He cupped his hands together for a moment, before opening them to reveal a beautiful purple flower. Your eyes lit up in amazement as you marvelled at the bloom he had made from thin air. “For you, Princess,” he said, holding out the flower for you. You took it from him and inhaled the fresh scent exuding from it. “Thank you,” you replied, looking Jungkook directly in the eyes. Not for the first time you contemplated how beautiful they were, like swirling galaxies pulling you closer to him.

You both stayed still for a moment, gazing deeply into each other’s eyes. You felt an overwhelming feeling of safety whenever you were with him, he was of great comfort to you, and now looking into his eyes you felt like you could float away into the clouds. Suddenly Jungkook moved his hand to cup your jaw, brushing his thumb along your face softly. “May I?” he asked. Your stomach erupted into butterflies, surely, he couldn’t be asking to kiss you? “Princess, may I kiss you?” he clarified after taking in your confused state. You nodded, dumbstruck, as he moved closer to your lips.

Jungkook’s lips were soft and warm as they caressed your own, his hand moving to the back of your neck to pull you closer. You melted into the kiss, amazed that this beautiful creature was actually in your arms. All too quickly Jungkook pulled away, taking in your flushed face and puffy lips. Before you had a chance to complain he pushed his lips against yours, more harshly this time. Gaining more confidence, you wrapped your hands around the back of his neck. Jungkook brushed his tongue against your lips and you opened them to allow him in. The feeling of your tongues intimately brushing together gave you a light feeling inside and simultaneously made you feel hot, this never happened with Hoseok.

After an unknown amount of time, it could’ve been minutes or hours, you both pulled away. “I…” you began, at a loss for words. “Thank you.” “My pleasure,” Jungkook replied, stirring feelings within your core. “Your lips are divine, as is the rest of you.” You felt a blush rise on your cheeks as you looked at the ground. “Please don’t look away, Princess,” he said as he grasped your hands. “I like you and I wish to show it. If you would rather stop these meetings then we can, but I would rather we carried on.” You looked back up to his face, he was smiling softly, and his galaxy eyes were glimmering. “I want to carry on too,” you said, pulling him in for another sweet kiss.

Each week the meetings and kisses continued, and you felt yourself falling more and more for Jungkook. Your previous ill feelings towards the Fae had vanished and you wanted nothing more than to be in the arms of your Fae lover at all times. On the twelfth visit you once again found your lips locked against his as you laid beneath him in the grass. This time it was different though, his hands were caressing your body more intensely than usual and you were beginning to feel hot.

Jungkook pulled away, foreheads resting against each other. “Y/N,” he began. “Have you ever been touched by a man?” You felt the colour drain from your face, he could probably sense you sullied nature and no longer wanted anything to do with you. “I have,” you replied cautiously. “Just one. I’m sorry.” Jungkook frowned. “Don’t apologise,” he said, softly brushing your jaw with his thumb. “I’m not pure either, but people don’t fuss over it with men like they do with women. It doesn’t matter to me either way.” Relief washed over you as you heard his words, Jungkook didn’t think you were damaged goods, he still wanted you. “May I touch you, Princess?” he whispered in your ear. Shivers of anticipation travelled down your spine as you nodded fervently.

Jungkook’s hand moved to your clothed breast as he began to massage it, a smirk appearing on his face as you let out a soft moan. He quickly untied the fastenings at the back of your dress and pulled it down to your waist. His mouth kissed where his hand had just been, eliciting louder moans from you as his tongue flicked at your nipple. Should I call a man of medicine?” You could feel the colour draining from your face and nausea filling your stomach. “It’s okay,” you lied. “I got them myself two weeks ago, I was in that part of the castle.” “Oh…” your maid frowned. “Forgive me, your highness, I am glad all is well. I’ll leave these rags in one of your draws for next time.” “Thank you,” you said, relieved she has believed your terrible untruth. Falling in love with Xiao is like living a bittersweet dream. The Vigilant Yaksha is far from human, or so he says, and thus is out of touch with the way we mortals experience feelings, both the negative and positive ones.

And still, he wishes and wants and does cherish each and every warm, kind feeling he gets every single second you’re together nonetheless.

Falling in love with Albedo is a fairy tale-like experience for both of you. His attention had always been focused on his research, everything else fading into the background save for a few exceptions, until you came around. You, who stole all his attention by just existing.

As an alchemist, he’s naturally the curious type.
