I would love some yoonmin recs!!! I recently read Life Out Here by PrettyPiedPiper and the lotus and the flame by embyr and loved them both. These fics are both kind of angsty but in different ways.... You should look them up and see if they are up your alley. 😉 Are there any good yoonmin fics you have read recently?

the most recent yoonmin fic that i am reading is flames by amyungv on twitter (they have deactivated for a few days😭 but plssss read it later) THAT STORY IS SOOOO BEAUTIFULL!! and the way the author had plotted it is just mindblowing...its like a whole movieeee

i have talked about this beautiful zelink AU before, and im glad i have the opportunity to talk about it again. @embyrinitalics is one of my favorite zelink authors, but Antumbra is a masterpiece to me. this AU is based on a request and turned into this beautiful interpretation of hyrule where link is not zelda’s knight, but her shadow. i was absolutely blown away when i first read this and could not put it down. not only is the author’s world building amazing, but the concepts of yearning and connection pull you in. your heart will absolutely break and be completely built back up if you read this wonderful AU. i recommend reading embyr’s other works as well. they are absolutely timeless, but Antumbra is one i always go back to.

Even in Death (Part 4 of 4)

There is no resurrection shrine. A new Hero is born. And the boy that saves her is not the one she loves.

There’s no separate chapter title for this because the title of the whole story is actually centered around this particular part. The legends are elusive and dubious. They speak of the Hero and Princess who are fated to meet, about their success in vanquishing evil and bringing peace to the land—about how it all (endlessly) repeats. Hardly do they speak of the aftermath, of what becomes of the Hero and the Princess. Do they find love? Are they tragically forced apart? All else is left unspoken; the remains, buried.

No one ever talks about what it is like in death.

So, I’ve had a lot thoughts on this and the implications of how this messed up cycle of rebirth affects things down the line. Some people also brought up some interesting questions/ideas in their comments that I will also address here. Let’s start with them:

Guest (FF.net for Part 1): ...of course this new Link is still the same spirit and he's going to be drawn to Zelda and do what the hero does, but he isn't her Link through no fault of his own. But amnesia Link we all know isn't really the same Link that she knew either, is he? Regardless, Link is going to want to be there for her.

To make this all work in the scenario I’ve set up, we’re going to have to separate the terms soul and spirit (or at least, this is what I’ve concluded; feel free to offer suggestions and/or different terminologies). Each reincarnation is of the same soul, but each iteration is its own spirit. Each spirit has a certain personality, a certain story they’ve lived through, and their own spirit-mate of their soulmate. I’ve read theories that every generation of Zelda is Zelda, but Link is only born when Ganon rises, but I feel like it would make sense that Hylia’s reincarnation only appears when the other two do. Still, they’re soulmates, so they will always be drawn to each other. I’ll explain the whole “She’s not my Zelda” and the “She’s always our Zelda” when addressing another comment below.

I honestly didn’t actively think about how different a new-Link would be from amnesia-Link, but it made itself apparent as I was writing parts two and three. Even though amnesia-Link doesn’t remember anything, I think he still feels a connection to the past and, as goofy as he is, will still be more mature. Assuming he recovers the memories, he knows the responsibility to protect Zelda is his in destiny and duty, and that they have developed some kind of relationship (platonic or not, he was close enough to her to share his burdens). His reasons for saving her will always be more personal.

Zelda, however, will have a distinctly different reaction. Even if Link doesn’t remember her, or even chooses not to remember her (cough100YearsinBetweencough), she will find peace in him still being alive, and she would still be super interested in research. I also think it would leave her with the choice to not start the monarchy system again. She didn’t completely fail, Hyrule is okay, so maybe she doesn’t have to be queen. The Zelda in “Even in Death” realizes just how much old-Link had ingrained himself into everything she does, and relives him dying in her arms every time she looks at the new-Link, and it takes her a long time to get over that. There is no peace for her. There’s nothing left for her if she doesn’t become queen.

Bhujerban: He just loves her so much and 'She's not his Zelda' but 'She's always our Zelda'

Embyr and I were talking about this. Link is not wrong, but he’s also not completely right either. There are certainly fated-pairs, and old-Link and Zelda are exactly that. Because of this, Zelda can’t love new-Link in the same way or in as much of an intensity, and old-Link loves his Zelda more than you (or I) can fathom (you can also argue that new-Link doesn’t realize he could potentially love Zelda more had she actually been his Zelda). But, as old-Link says in this chapter, new-Link can’t help but love the Zelda born in his lifetime.

In the same way that Super Smash Bros BotW Link is shown to protect ALBW Zelda, all Links love, in some way, all Zeldas. If OoT Link ended up getting sent to the BotW Zelda to serve as the new Link, he would certainly fight for her and they will share a mutual fondness, but never quite love each other like they do their spirit-mates. In some ways, it might have been a more comforting relationship because they both understand each other’s loss and there would be no pressure to make it become anything more than that.

SensationalSunburst: ...it brings up so many possibilities, you know? What if the new Link tries to give control of his body to old Link because he figures that's what'll make Zelda happy?

I, personally, think the possibilities are endless. I don’t think either Links will ever allow a complete or permanent take over, but perhaps for some instances. It’s not all that different from when they let instinct take over during fights. Old-Link notices that the line can be blurry pretty early on. New-Link is just now accepting it.

Kat2030: He isn't her link and he may not be her zelda.

dontwaitupxx: What really resonated with me this chapter was the phrase “I’m not your Zelda”. While her Link from before states “she’s always our Zelda”, it makes me wonder from his perspective, if she isn’t, then who is? Does he get a Zelda? Did he get just as cheated out of a happy ending as she was?

YES. At the end of the day, Zelda is absolutely right—she is not new-Link’s Zelda. New-Link gets shafted because this Zelda is who he was born to love but was not made for him. And this is the ripple effect explored in this little drabble here. If there’s only one Link to every Zelda, then the next Zelda does not get a Link in order for the cycle to attempt to reset itself. And then it spirals into more problems because then Zelda has to wield the Master Sword and I just thought this would be a great opportunity to switch some roles lol.

Ash and I have talked quite a bit about this and there are two main possibilities:

1) My original intended—everyone gets shafted. With subsequent reincarnations, Zelda might see both her Links, or perhaps new-Link decides not to stay with the other spirits (if that’s a choice). This pertains to the next Zelda as well, whose lover/husband does not (for what we know) have any connection to previous Links, and she may not choose to stick around (what is more likely is that new-Link and next-Zelda are both there, and they get to know each other as friends but never lovers just because they had different first loves). It’s a weird realm. For some reason, the original Link is never there, much like how Hylia never really makes an appearance like the other Zeldas. I like to think there’s a tether to their spirit-mate that draws them there, and Hylia/Original Link are an exception. They don’t have clear visuals of the spirit-realm in their head when they’re alive anyway.

2) Ash’s idea to ease all the hurt is that old-Link loves his Zelda so much that he accidentally splits his spirit and new-Link is actually half him, so when new-Link dies, they become “whole” again. None of them knows about this until his death though, so they never make notes of any of this. However, it still disrupts things. Link loses his connection to his past-selves, and then the role reversal happens, and it’s a mess. @ashleyswrittenwords, feel free to make any corrections to this.

What actually is happening behind the scenes doesn’t really matter much, and I like to leave it open to whatever headcanon you want. Feel free to share! The sequel to the sequel hasn’t been written, and won’t be for awhile, so there’s still time to make changes.

Embyre’s is mocking (debate is o...k) the Sunlight God and priests or harming a wolf when it’s not harming you. Spirayo is slavery and false imprisonment and also tattoos. New Rookwell is marrying someone outside of your class and marrying children to adults. Empire colonies like the Sturm Islands have a taboo against asking any person wearing a rebel uniform or having a rebel tattoo any details about their war experiences. The Islands also have a taboo against reporting them to the authorities if they commit a minor crime.
