I recently remembered Paris. This led me to a new story about Andreil.

So let's imagine Andrew, who along with his brother Aaron is adopted by Betsy when they are 7 years old. They grow in love and care. When the twins graduate, Aaron goes to medical college, and Andrew can't decide what he wants to do in life. Betsy offers him to travel the world and find his inspiration and purpose in life. Andrew takes the accumulated money and leaves with one backpack. During his journey, he sometimes stops for a short time in countries to work and earn more money.

After one year of traveling around the world, he decides to stop for a while in France and rest. This is how Andrew ends up in Paris. It is there that Andrew meets Neil. An exchange student who came to Paris for three years.

Maybe this is the meeting that will make two hearts linger in the city of love for a little while longer?

1. Call Me By Your Name (3.9k, andreil)  

Basically, Neil calls Andrew “baby” in his sleep once, so Andrew  gets flustered and then secretly tries out different pet names for Neil.

This one... honestly really surprised me with how popular it got. It’s my most kudos’d fic by a long shot (2,378 kudos??? insanity). It’s a short little thing, entirely focused around andreil and pet names. To be honest, I have mixed feelings about this one being the top fic, because it’s one of my oldest fics and I don’t really love the prose now. I don’t really understand why it got so popular out of everything I wrote bc it’s never anyone’s favorite fic when I ask, but I’m glad so many enjoyed it!

2. Sweet Enough To Eat (3.1k, andreil) 

Andrew experiencing cute aggression. That’s basically the whole premise lol.

 Anyway, this one is my oldest fic, so I assume that’s why it’s so popular. It’s cute, sweet even! I still like it to this day. Not much else to say about it though.

3. May We Meet Again (10.7k, andreil)

The first installment of the Artist Neil AU. 

To be honest, I don’t like it anymore. That whole AU has problems with pacing, and some characterization issues too. Plus, looking back at the art now makes me cringe so hard. The only reason it’s still up is bc I know a lot of people really like it. Sometimes I think about revising the whole thing but I still remember how big of an undertaking it was when I first wrote it and made all the art for it, so I probably won’t. 

4. The Marks We Make (41.3k, andreil)

A (mostly) canon rewrite from Andrew’s POV with a soulmate AU twist. 

This the first multichapter fic I ever wrote, and one of the earliest fics I ever published, so I’m not surprised it’s high on the list. There are some things I like about this one, and some I would do differently. Writing this fic helped me make some of my first friends in the fandom though, so it was very much worth it.

5. Yes Or No? (35.5k, andreil)

sub andrew & Dom Neil pwp - need I say more?. 

This one truly surprised me. It was meant to be a one-shot experiment, something I wrote as an exploration of my own boundaries and limits. BDSM fics are often triggering for me, so I generally avoid them, but I wanted to write a BDSM fic that I would be able to enjoy and to explore BDSM from a safe distance.

However, given how much the fandom seemed to be against Andrew submitting (and sometimes even just bottoming) at the time, I worried I might end up getting hate for writing it. To my surprise, I did not, and so many commenters asked that I continue it that I ended up turning it into a whole series. 

I’m quite proud of it still - it might just be a smut fic to most people, but it will always be more than just a smut fic to me. 

I do hate the last 3 paragraphs of the main fic though. I was on a kick where I thought incorporating references to fic titles and canon lines into my writing was clever and fun, but now I just cringe when I look at it. Ahh well, maybe someday I’ll change it and tell nobody. Create a little Berenstein/Berenstain Bears moment :)

Top 5 (Personal Ranking):

1.  More Than Words (32.9k, ongoing, neon friendship)

Neil and Aaron meet as kids and become best friends, long before Aaron learns his mother’s secret - he has a long lost twin brother.

I cannot gush enough about the love I have for this fic, this whole story. I can’t talk about it here because I have some insane twists planned (iykyk) but just know this fic is my baby and this story will be my magnum opus once it’s done. I love writing Neil and Aaron’s friendship, I love writing Aaron’s POV, I love the plans I have these boys. It’s still ongoing so I understand why it’s not higher up in the kudos ranking, but I’m hopeful that will change once I actually finish it.

2. A Quiet Self-Destruction (2.6k, andreil)

A character study on Andrew’s experience with depression, and how Neil helps him through his bad days.

I wrote this to comfort myself during one of my own depression spells. It still brings me a bit of hope on dark days. For that, I will always love it.

3. Scribbles and Sticky Notes (11.7k, andreil)

Neil retires from Exy, with heaps of fluff, soft Andreil, wholesome Twinyards, hurt/comfort, MCD and angst.

Hands down, this is the saddest fic I’ve ever written, and I’m quite proud of that fact. I think the pacing is really good, and the gut punches are quite successful (while being foreshadowed quite nicely). The characterization is also spot on, I think. It’s got MCD though, which I think is probably why it’s not more popular. 

4. The Past, Stained Red (4.4k, andreil)

Part 3 of the Artist Neil AU. Andrew has a surprise run-in with a ghost from his past, and finally gets some closure.

This is the only fic of the Artist Neil AU that I actually still like. It’s well-paced, well-characterized, and I still like the art. Mostly, though, I viciously loved writing Andrew getting to close the door on Cass, and I loved writing him acknowledging the harm she did to him as a foster parent. He couldn’t see it as a child, but as an adult? He sees her clearly, in all her failure. It was extremely cathartic to write that. 

5. Catdrew Meowyard (1.4k, andreil)

Andrew suddenly has cat ears and a tail. Nobody questions it. Shenanigans ensue.

This is such a silly little fic. I wrote it as a joke and I still love it dearly, even though it’s very dumb. It’s just very fun to write and to read, and it’s perfect for when I want to blow off steam and write some crack.

rory’s andreil bedtime stories

it’s no secret that i love to write a sleepy little scene. it should also not be a secret that i reread my own stuff a lot (seeing as i am my primary audience lol), and i revisit sleepy scenes most often because i unintentionally designed them to be good at helping me wind down.

and so: here’s a collection of my short andreil fics that center on sleep & rest. nothing too terrible happens in any of them, and if there is something a little terrible, it’s resolved by some zzzzzzzzz mimimimi zzzzz. all rated T!

return: neil gets home late at night from a recruiting trip with wymack. <500 words

sleep debt: neil makes up for years of sleep deprivation in the last couple weeks of his freshman year. <500 words

i don’t mind: andrew finds comfort in neil after a nightmare. <500 words

solutions: andrew takes a xanax before a flight. <500 words

twenty questions: andrew and neil fight sleep on the bus after a game. <500 words

sleep hygiene: years into the future, andrew has a lazy morning in their shared apartment. (+@aliteralgarbageheap made a podfic!) ~1k words

when the smoke clears: after baltimore & the championship, andrew has a series of nightmares (that are only vaguely described) that prompt him to seek neil out. ~3k words

here: least sleepy of the list, but seems to be comforting for ppl with bipolar or other mood disorders. an early morning convo in which neil tries to understand andrew’s mood swings. ~1k words

Tell us more about your thoughts on how the exy and mafia storylines collide, pretty please?

The short version? It's just a normal sports underdog story...except yakuza.

The long version? Well.

90% of the time the story is beating you over the head with how visible-from-orbit clearly this is supposed to be a sports underdog story.

Kevin was supposed to get booted off the Ravens, go to his dad to sulk, vow revenge, and whip the foxes into shape with determination and the power of friendship.

...except yakuza. By the time he can play again, with his nondominant hand, he's got massive anxiety and a raging alcohol problem. And lead the team? Please. He may have gotten them further than usual as an assistant coach, but they all hate his guts and that's exactly how he likes it. His model for an efficient team is a fucking cult and the power of friendship is a joke he doesn't find funny.

So the story is delayed by a year. Fine. Whatever. Enter Neil. Neil is the smart mouthed prodigy who could be great if only he listened to direction and stopped pissing everybody off.

...except yakuza. And it doesn't matter that Neil is actually the most charismatic bitch in this house and hangs on to every piece of advice Kevin cares to give him (and he gives a LOT) because he's never going to live to see the end of this story and if they're not careful, neither will the rest of the team.

Seth should have fizzled out like every fox before him, called them all worthless and left to pursue his chances elsewhere, except Yakuza so now he's dead.

Andrew should have been the secondary foil as the equally talented player who's stuck here and refuses to make the effort until act 3, except he's a traumatized mess who needs a whole book just to go from "antagonist" to "foil", and then gets Thanksgiving happens halfway in, removing him from half of book 2 and leaving behind a different person in book 3. And it doesn't matter that he's actually hauling ass for most of the series because it's just plain not enough.

The new year should have had the foxes go on a meteoric rise, making the world take them seriously, until Riko pulls some dumb move to bring Kevin or Neil back to Evermore, just to undercut them again. Except Kevin refuses to talk to him, and they literally couldn't torture Neil into signing. What does stop their momentum? Nathan, with the bloody locker and the kidnapping. And since neither of those are a betrayal to the team, they just rally more.

The championship should have ended with the foxes celebrating to thundering applause, maybe Andreil kissing, Riko staring off dumbfounded as Jean walks away from him in disgust.

Except this is the Nest, and the crowd was silent.

Except Jean was long, long gone.

Except. Riko.

hi! in your recent post you asked to do more recs. i have no idea if this is what you meant but can you rec the fics that just make you want to fall to your knees and moan? and not in a sexual way (though it could be) but more of a “holy shit i love them, this is fantastic, i can’t believe something like this exists and i get to witness it” kind of way. like for me, biomy makes my knees weak, just because of how much they love eachother (and the smut helps ofc >:)

Interesting wording there anon but I think I get what you mean SJJSJS. Here's some of my all time absolute favorites that make me think "holy shit I love them, this is fantastic, I can't believe something like this exists and I get to witness it":

Inked Truths by Paradoxolotl

Oh Inked my beloved, this is just a series that I treasure so much. I remember so clearly I had seen this cute meme about Brother of Mine and it was something like "ok I can do this, I can get through this without crying" - can't get through BOM without crying. And then I became friends with Para and THEN binged the entire series and god it's just so great (also the BOM alternate ending is totally my fault I'm sorry).

This is absolutely my favorite canon-divergence fic for AFTG and there's so many reasons why. Para is so incredible with the way they write their fics, how much care they have for their ideas and the amount of love they have for the original series. I have never read anything with more accurate characterization - if some fics are ooc, then this is the complete opposite. Not to mention the way they write Andrew's backstory as we walk through it, every single struggle from not just his POV, but from Aaron and Abram's as well.

And god, Abram is just so good in this too. Honestly this fic just gives me a whole new insight to Andreil, a whole new way to adore them, and I am quite frankly obsessed with it. I've only read one other fic with a slower burn than this one and I love you for it Para.

Also we get Greer which honestly is a whole reason in itself to have that sort of reaction :3

2. Artist AU by Fortheloveofexy

The artist au is just so amazing to me for a couple of different reasons. For one, you can just tell how much love Jess put into this one - if the fact that they drew art to go along with it didn't give it away, then the amount of detail and effort they put into Neil being an artist definitely should. At first you think this is going to be a cutesy artist short fic, but NO. They gave us some sequels that completely dive into Neil's past and how that trauma affects him as a person in the present and JFC IT SENDS YOU ON AN EMOTIONAL ROLLERCOASTER.

And Jess too just puts so much into the characterization. It's so incredible and I adore it. The way certain events happen, how the story progresses, Neil's flighty-ness constantly clashing with his desire to stay...it's so perfect. You should at the very least read this for the art and stay for everything else!

3. In My Defense, I Have None by likearecord

A high-school AU with fake dating?? Sign me the hell up, this is literally everything I love rolled into one, and it only just keeps getting better. I have no idea how many times I've recced this by now, but this is one of my all time favorites and I reread it so often. Not only does it put a twist on fake-dating, but it gets a high school romance done so well while also keeping those essential aspects to the original characters that it makes me explode.

Not only that, but you don't have to worry about any sudden kidnapping or the past catching up to anyone. It's just these idiots and their own dumb decisions and I live for it. Not to mention this entire conflict could've been avoided if people literally just confessed their feelings instead of doing cartwheels around them, but honestly that's just what makes this fic even better, I'm literally begging you to read it.

4. Learning to be Human by coritkyo

This one I've only just gotten into (and it's incomplete) but holy shit I can't believe I didn't find it sooner. I'm absolutely obsessed with it. I won't say too much so as to not spoil things, but dear lord is it good. The author does an incredible job with the characterization, I'm obsessed with how everyone's dynamic works, and their worldbuilding is incredible. You might be left in the dark for a little bit, but there's a reason for it and I fuckinggggg love when that happens.

And I'm just obsessed with Neil in this one. Seriously, robot Neil is everything I never knew I needed before.

5. When the frost is in bloom by Silveriss

I don't know what exactly it is about this fic that gets me feral but it's just so good. The angst is peak, the descriptions are flawless and it just makes my heart ache in the best of ways. Silveriss writes these two so well, especially with everything that happens that I won't spoil. Winter Spirit! Neil and Author! Andrew, what more could we ever need? I am literally begging you guys to read it.

6. Touch me, love me, leave me by BakaDoll

The soldier Andrew fic. Honestly I'm sure most of us have read it by now but it needs to be said again: jfc this fic is so good. It's a long but well worth it read, and if you don't mind a bit of smut then you should definitely check it out. The author put so much effort into this one, and you know the idea that Andrew gets sent to the military rather than get court-ordered drugs kinda makes more sense (I'm sure anything makes more sense than the drugs but c'est la vie). These two dummies immediately being able to understand and work with each other while having to live together is perfection, and I love reading about how their relationship develops, too. It might start of as pure physical attraction - whatever excuses float your boat Andrew - but just their inside jokes and constant texting and caring about what matters to the other is so good.

7. Junk of the Heart by AmaliaIR

This one isn't that long but to me it just packed such a punch. So much is in it, so if you can handle a bit of angst you should definitely read it. Neil's heart condition finally becoming something he can't ignore, and yet his martyr complex still kicking in is so accurate it pains me. There is so much inner conflict and Amalia does such a good job with it, especially when attributing it to outside factors. Neil's constant flee vs. stay mentality is something we've seen countless times, but once again we get to see it differently, and Amalia just did incredible with it. So much research went into this fic too, I loved it so much!

The King's Men - Nora Sakavic (All for the Game #3)

Real? 1.5/5. To me? 3/5 - Andreil my beloveds, Kevin's new tattoo, the plot if anything gets worse

I feel obligated to say that I can enjoy these books the way anyone can enjoy fanfiction that's maybe not the best written but that keeps putting your favorite characters in situations. I'm going to read it unless it's absolutely horrific.

Andrew and Neil my besties. My beloveds. I want the world for them and they got it! Some of their priorities could use rearranging though. I'm happy y'all are happy and want to jump each other's bones but maybe rest first? Some sleep? Some antibiotics for Neil's many injuries?

Kevin and his new tattoo was really so nice to see, I wanted nothing but the best for him. And for him to show up at their final game playing with his left hand again? Superb, showstopping, one-of-a-kind, etc.

Allison was my surprise favorite after this installment. She didn't really have any character development in the last two books, so getting to know her here was pleasant.

The whole plot outside of Exy really leaves something to be desired but again, I am choosing to suspend my disbelief far beyond the usual boundaries of non-Fan/SF fiction. Except for their drinking habits. "Kevin downed half a bottle of vodka in under a minute", no, he didn't. Not without throwing up. And he would not be able to play afterwards. I understand Sakavic was trying to give them addiction problems (and she did succeed) but the human body does still have limits.

The ending was surprisingly satisfying. I didn't expect it to end in such a rational (in-context) way, but it was honestly a nice reprieve from the everything else about this story.

All I really want to do now is stare at Andrew and Neil under a microscope. I also didn't realize until this book at Neil was only 5'3"? Neil Josten, my short king.

writer questions!

nobody tagged me but I love this crap and am technically a writer so lets do it.

1. what’s your favourite genre to write?

Oooooo romance obviously, but more specifically I like writing fics that focus a lot on character analysis? 

2. do you pull inspiration from real-life, or do you pull things from other books/fanfic?

I write a lot of AUs, but I do get a lot of inspiration from songs. I’ll also work in headcanons I see on tumblr and stuff 

3. do you tend to write one-shots, short stories, or longer things?

I always want to write multi-chapter fics, but struggle to finish them. It’s a goal of mine to write more one shots instead of dedicating myself to 20k+ fics.

4. do you prefer description or dialogue?

DIALOGUE!!! I used to be obsessed with writing texting fics which gave me a lot of experience with dialogue, while leaving my description skills to suffer.

5. favourite fanfic/book of all time?

Bro. Impossible question, but my current favourite book is The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. My favourite series is Six of Crows or  The Raven Cycle.

 This is atypical for me since it’s not romance focused, but is rather focused on Neil’s trauma from his mother and him realizing that the way she treated him was not okay. 

Also shoutout to every “andreil fake rivalry fic” it is one of the few times I read established relationship and I eat it up every time.

A truly adorable neighbour AU. Honestly Pynch was one of the toughest to pick a favourite for.

An interesting twist on the coffee shop AU where Mickey and Ian fall in love as adults rather than teens. 

I read this a while ago, but I was OBSESSED it made me fall in love with the idea of Artist! Mickey and I loved how they wrote his relationship with his sister Mandy.

Wrong number! Enemies to Lovers! Fake Dating! There was only one bed! I’m a simple girl tbh. when writing I especially like writing about chronic illness but idk if that counts as a trope.

7. are you the kind of person to work on more than one wip?

Not successfully. If I start another fic the first one won’t be touched again til I’ve finished my new fic if ever again. 

8. how long have you been writing for?

Since I was 14 so almost 9 years, but that has definitely not been continuous. I’ve gone years without writing anything.

9. do you tend to write more during the morning, afternoon, or evening?

I get an idea and write whenever I can until it’s either done or I’ve gotten distracted rather than having a set time of the day. 

10. do you prefer to post your wip chapter by chapter, or do you prefer to wait until your wip is 100% finished before posting?

I prefer to finish everything first because I’ve found I won’t finish otherwise. Besides I like being able to go back and change stuff.

I’ve been stalking your page ever since finishing the latest chapter of (why is there) joy in this poison and FINALLY SOMEONE WHO IS OBSESSED WITH YR AND AFTG.

It’s funny seeing crossovers between fandoms and I like to keep my blog quiet between my many indulgences and hyperfixations but omg!!! I’ve loved both of these series for so long and to see some one as joyed about them as me is so neat!

in all honesty I came here to gush about your writing, how I really enjoy what you made and continue to make for the aftg universe! the way you write Andrew specifically is so unique and defiently made me re-read his lines and certain chapters because they’re just that GOOD! And to see a relationship between Kevin and Neil that’s so near and dear- is so refreshing- I love how much love they have for each other! And DONT GET ME STARTED ON THE ANDREIL MOMENTS!! Ugh the trust those two already have and continue to show each other in such a short amount of time (truly a feat for sir “walls” Andrew Minyard) has me on the edge of my seat for every and all chapters! And who isn’t a slut for sassy Neil really. That kid could trash talk anyone into the ground and I’d be applauding him the entire time!

and second, god you have no idea how much i miss reading your writing lmao, like more than once i've considered reading your fics despite me not knowing what's going simply bc of how wonderful you are, but in the end i chicken out bc i really wouldn't understand a thing (i do love reading every short snippet you share, like fuck you're such an amazing writer)

but getting on with it, i have to admit i took so long with answering this bc i had so much trouble choosing first a fic and then a passage, but i think i feel confident about this one

BTS: I’ll write a DVD commentary about my personal favorite passage from no big deal (i love you) from my song fic collection

i'm warning you it got long though, lmao, like i'd totally understand if everyone just ignored this

okay so this was the latest complete fic i've written, it's quite short so i'm just gonna go ahead and comment on all of it lmao

the thing i actually really loved first was the song, i just played it on repeat for an entire day and while i was just trying to do my best when the semester was almost over, and really no big deal by dodie is such a good fucking song

like in dodie's style, it's so genuinely heartbreaking, with her voice the pain and the pretense of there being no pain is so authentic, and the vibes are immaculate

so of course my first thought was, "hey this could be andreil angst"

and i did pretty much going verse by verse, i think there are only one or two lines that i didn't use, but it was actually so easy to write this, in the emotional way, because the vibes and the context in which i wrote the story complimented each other perfectly

so it's a fwb situation, but going by what happens in canon, and taking into account that neil is demisexual, he never was in it for the sex, it was always something far deeper and more emotional than either of them was prepared for. and even though neil is too mindful of andrew's boundaries to realize it, of course andrew wasn't in it for the sex either.

so it's like the song says, and like how i included it, they do this dance of pretending they don't care for each other too deeply, even if their hands and their actions and the softness of their not so no-strings-attached sex, neither of them say or admit anything, at least outside of not so casual praise during the sex

and it's all really just a big crisis inside neil's head, about him trying to convince himself that he neither loves andrew nor cares about the fact that even if they both know that their thing is not emotionless they can't say what they're feeling

it's neil hating how easy and hard even thinking about love and having something with andrew feels, it's him pretending that if he did love andrew, of course he would be able to say it, it's him convincing himself that the looks they exchange and their teasing and how easy life with the other is, it's really not a big deal

except there comes a point when he realizes fuck, i love him, and i think he loves me back, but they're too complicated, and just admiting to each other that they love the other would be way too easy for them, because neither of them knows anything but complicated relationships

and i think my favorite part is near the end, when neil is watching andrew sleep, and he can think of nothing else except how much he loves him, but it's morning and they're both to vulnerable, so instead of even daring to whisper it, not having the guts to say it yet

it's quite a sad moment of neil just screaming those three little words inside his head, kind of just vowing that he'll tell andrew soon, once he wakes up, once he's ready, but he can't say it out loud yet, and it's all kind of interrumpted thoughts and italics and even caps and

and in the end, he doesn't dare to say it just yet, even though he swears it's not a big deal that neither of them can say it, even though he feels the warmth and the courage to say it, he can't bring himself to do it

it hurts not to be able to do it, it hurts that they have something good, and neil wants to say it, but he can't, so he smiles but he doesn't feel like smiling

and it ends again, simply with the words "it's no big deal", because really, it's not, love doesn't have to be this grand thing, revelations of love don't have to be anything special, but neil wanted it to be, in a way

neil wants to say how much he loves andrew but doesn't. out of fear maybe, most likely, and it's sad how it starts and ends with neil trying to convince himself that he doesn't care, when he hasn't cared about anyone else this much in his life

and i'm so fucking sorry i talked so fucking much lmao, i just really really enjoyed writing this short piece even if it was only like a thousand words, i just really loved the soft but painful vibes of both lyrics and music of the song, and how emotional it was to translate it to something neil would feel

like it's short as fuck, it's part of a short collection of song fics, and i don't even know how many people have read it because it's just a chapter from a fic with 25 ish kudos, so ik it's not special in the grand scheme of things, but it felt really special to write, and i think i'll cherish this small thing with my whole heart forever

How I feel the Foxes cry:

Dan- she's not ashamed of crying but she tries not to do it in front of others (unless they are super close to her like the Upperclassmen) because she feels like she needs to always present herself as strong and grounded. She can have fun but she doesn't like to show too much vulnerability.

Kevin- He tries to hold it back. Riko would make fun of him in the Nest for showing such weak emotions so eventually he learned how to just hold it back until he was alone, but he starts to open up more and hide less around the (original) Foxes as the years go on.

Andrew- it would take a lot to get him to actually cry, but if he got to that point, it would start put as silent tears but it would definitely turn into full out ugly sobbing because he would finally be letting all of his emotions out. He would feel out of control, and that would terrify him, leading him to sob even more with that additional fear and sometimes even leading him into a panic attack. He would make sure he was alone and he would stay alone for hours after he was finished. The only person he would allow near him would be Neil because Neil is someone who he 100% trusts and would feel absolutely safe losing control in front of.

Matt- he would cry whenever he needed to. If it's a situation where crying might make it worse, he would try to hold back, but he isn't very good at holding back tears. He cries when tears come and he isn't ashamed of it.

Aaron- he would angry cry. Like, he'll cry when he gets too emotional or something (or when something cry worthy happens) but then he'll get annoyed and angry at himself for crying. He wants to be tough and he thinks crying makes him seem weak and vulnerable, which he is not a fan of. He tries as hard as he can to hold it back in public (and he usually succeeds) but he let's it all out in private.

Allison- she cries quietly. Sometimes in front of people, but not often. She, like Dan, tries to wait until she is alone or with close friends, because she feels like she has an image to uphold. She doesn't want to be seen as weak or vulnerable. After her every move was controlled when she was a child, she can finally make her own image for herself, and she wants people to see her as strong.

Nicky- it depends on the situation. If it's a sad movie, he will bawl his eyes out no matter where he is or who is around. If it's a serious matter though, like something to do with the twins or Erik or someone he cares about, he will hold back the tears until he is relatively alone or at least until the incident has passed. Nicky is strong when he needs to be and when he knows that someone needs to rely on him to be strong. He would hold Aaron whenever he got panic attacks in high school and wait until he knew Aaron was okay before he went to his room and cried quietly for Aaron, at the unfairness of it all, making sure he couldn't be heard. He would choke back his tears everytime he realized Andrew was going through a depressive episode and he would make sure Andrew ate and drank enough until it was over, then he would let it out again. Alone. Quietly. He knows when he can just let go and when to keep it together.

Renee- very few people have ever seen her cry. She is the person everyone looks to for moral strength and peace. She does not let anyone see her lose her composure. Growing up, weakness meant pain and punishment. When she moved in with Stephanie, she was able to get in touch with her emotions again and allowed herself to be vulnerable in front of her. Now, she only let's herself let go around those closest to her, and never during an incident. This basically consists of the girls and Andrew. Not even Matt has seen her cry. She keeps herself calm and becomes a pillar of emotional support. When everyone else was crying and mourning Seth's death, she was giving dry-eyed hugs, and support. She knew it wouldn't help Allison if she lost her composure as well. If Andrew is a physical pillar of strength and security to rely on, Renee is a pillar for everything else.

Neil- Neil absolutely hates crying. Crying as a child would get him mocked and usually end in more pain when his dad or Lola decided they wanted to really give him something to cry about. As he grew older and went on the run, crying meant harsh yanks to his hair and slaps across the face to encourage him to get it together Abram, stop being so weak. He hates crying, but a lot of times, he just can't help it. When he's in extreme pain, for example. Or occasionally when he has a particularly bad panic attack or nightmare. Other times, he can control it. He pushes it back and compartmentalizes it along with whatever traumatic thoughts brought up the urge. As time goes on with the Foxes, he slowly learns that it's okay to cry sometimes. No one was going to hurt him for it anymore. He was also very surprised to find that he is awful at holding back tears associated with happy emotions. The first time Andrew refers to Neil as his boyfriend, Neil almost loses it. At Dan and Matt's wedding, as he stands in his place as Best Man, Neil is just so overwhelmingly happy for his friend. He manages to keep these tears of joy back until he is alone or with only Andrew, but they're there. They exist. The first day Neil and Andrew spend in their new apartment together is filled with small, random instances of tears, because this is his. This home, this person, this life. He never thought he would live long enough to find peace, much less happiness and contentment to this degree. So, Neil has a complicated relationship with crying, but as time goes on, it gets better.
