Alice Longbottom was a pure-blood witch, an Auror who worked for the Ministry of Magic during Lord Voldemort's first rise to power. Alice and her husband Frank Longbottom, were also members of the original Order of the Phoenix and fought against Voldemort and his Death Eaters during the First Wizarding War.

At the end of the war in 1981, when their son Neville was only an infant, Alice and Frank were tortured into insanity by a group of Death Eaters. She and her husband were subsequently placed in the Janus Thickey Ward for irrevocable spell damage at St Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries, where they were residing until at least January 1996.

11. If you could only write angst, fluff, or smut for the rest of your life, which would it be?

So the genre I've actually written most for throughout my entire life is comedy, which is weird because IAWYN turned out to be this long angsty melodrama! Could I really write just angst for the rest of my life? I do think I would enjoy it because I absolutely adore being devastated by angsty books (Code Name Verity, And I Darken, etc), but I don't think I should be allowed to take myself that seriously all the time! So I might have to choose fluff, because it's the most compatible with comedy.

25. Which idea came to you first in IAWYN?

Once I decided I was going to write a Ted/Andromeda story (and really, there was no other pairing I wanted to write about!), I think from the very beginning it was clear that I wanted to write something that would look at the rise of Voldemort and the beginning of the First Wizarding War. In the early 2010s I wrote a FWW fic set in 1979 that focused on Marlene McKinnon and Alice Longbottom, greatly inspired by WWII books like Sarah Waters' The Night Watch. With IAWYN I wanted to do something similar, except set earlier and more about what it would be like to come of age exactly as the war erupted.

Then I thought about what that would mean on a personal level for Andromeda and Ted – for Andromeda, it would mean a reckoning with her privileged past and bigoted family, the necessity of which would become apparent as Bellatrix became a fanatic; for Ted, it would mean him being drawn into a fight he originally didn't want to be part of, because his Muggle-born status means he can't ignore what's going on in the wizarding world. Aesthetically, I wanted to contrast the gaudy, glitzy world of pureblood society with Ted's working class background. As I got deeper into the writing process I started to focus more on the familial traumas that shaped both Andromeda and Ted (and of course Lucius), but I think in general I stuck with my original vision.

As for specific ideas, the first concrete scene I remember having an idea for was an opening scene that involved the Black sisters – initially it was going to be set in their family home, rather than the Hogwarts' Express. I've always loved sibling dynamics (the Mitford sisters in particular), and I just knew the story had to begin there (and it ended up starting with a line from Bellatrix), because the Black family, including Sirius and Regulus, is the perfect microcosm of the war-torn wizarding world.
