the stars that light the road
Tumblr media
a/n: the writers block has been Real these last few weeks and im basically in the middle of 3 fics so I just said screw it and set them aside for the moment and started something completely new to try and trick writing brain and it definitely worked cuz I word vomited like 3 thousand words <3
requested by anonymous
pairing: steve harrington x reader
summary: the reader comes to take care of Steve after star court (aka the guy who takes care of everyone is actually taken care of for once, plus some love confessions ofc)
word count: 2.7k
warnings: cursing, blood/injury mention
-
Steve’s house always felt empty to him as a kid, even during what he ironically refers to as the golden years. Aka, the years before his parents realized how little they cared for each other and for him, when they were home every day—and every night.
When the world almost ended the first time, Steve was grateful for his hollow halls. If his parents weren’t around, they couldn’t get hurt, and they couldn’t ask any questions. He felt that way the second time, too.
This time, though, round three, coming back to a big, dark, empty house only makes his wounds ache fiercer. Every step and breath as he heads through the halls, flipping on every single light in every single room, echoes louder than Steve thinks it should.
Maybe he should have gotten checked out by the EMT’s.
Once he’s lit the house up bright enough to be seen from the moon, he just sits down on the bottom step of his staircase. He suddenly doesn’t care about the ratty, blood-stained uniform he’s wearing. Or the fact that he reopened the cut above his eyebrow and blood is actively trickling down one side of his face and falling in tiny droplets onto the stair.
Drip. Drip. Drip.
He should track down his first aid kit. He should do a lot of things. Instead of doing a single one, he just sits.
Getting up would mean dealing with everything that’s happened and doing it alone, again, like always. And he’s tired. Every time he closes his eyes he sees that Russian doctor’s face, and he swears the electrical hum of the base followed him home.
He’s not sure how much time has passed when the knock echoes on the door a few feet in front of him. He jumps to his feet, immediately pissing off his injuries, and blinks the haze out of his eyes as he unlocks the door.
He doesn’t even stop to consider who might be on his porch, mostly because it can’t be anyone but a random neighbor or a mailman who is running ridiculously late on his route.
It isn’t a mailman or a neighbor, though.
It’s you. Your hair still damp from a shower, wearing sweats and an old Hawkins High hoodie, with ugly bruises cresting across any bare skin. Standing on Steve’s front porch a few hours after he left you in the parking lot of what used to be Starcourt Mall, and is now a pile of smoke and ash.
And he has no goddamn clue why.
“What are you doing here?” Steve asks, craning his head to peer around you. He isn’t sure what he expects to see—a monster running behind you—but it isn’t a calm, empty street. It isn’t a peaceful, quiet night. “Did something happen?”
You frown, brows twitching. “What? No, nothing happened.” You clear your throat. “I just—I wanted to make sure you were okay. Y’know. After everything today. I figured I’d check up on you.”
An unfamiliar sensation blooms in Steve’s chest. It starts out warm, but burns hotter and hotter as it crawls up the back of his throat and cinches it shut. He swallows forcefully, and he can still taste the metal twinge of blood.
“You figured you’d… check up on me?” The words have a meaning, but Steve can’t quite attach it.
“Uh, yeah,” you say. You press your lips together and rock back and forth on your heels. “You almost died, like, multiple times today.”
He remembers. His throat is still raw from begging.
“Huh. Must have slipped my mind,” he says, forcing one side of his mouth to lift, though he knows the half-smile falls flat.
“Yeah, well, you got hit pretty hard in the head. A bunch. I’m not surprised.” Your lips pull in a tiny smile as you speak, but it doesn’t quite reach your eyes. There’s something rigid to your expression and stance, and if Steve didn’t know better, he’d say you’re worried.
But he doesn’t know what’s left to worry about. The Mind Flayer is a pile of melted goo, and Billy is dead, and for now, the Upside Down is dealt with. All that’s left to do is pick up the pieces, but none of those pieces are here.
“So, can I come in?”
Steve says yes, because he doesn’t have a reason to say no. He never has when it comes to you. He steps back and out of the way, letting you slip past him and into the house.
And he swears, somehow, the cold house gets a little warmer with you inside it.
“You still haven’t treated that?” you ask, gesturing to the bloody mess of his face. “Steve—”
“I was getting to it,” he says. He locks the door behind you, using the second he’s turned away to compose himself. He’s still not sure why you’re here—you told him, but he doesn’t get it. Like, of all the people you could check up on, how did you end up here?
“Getting to it? Jesus—” You flutter about him like a frightened hen, hands ghosting up and down his arms, across his chest, over the dried blood and the slashed fabric. “You’ve got to get out of these clothes. Take a shower. God forbid something gets infected—”
“It’s not a big deal,” Steve says, lightly swatting your hands away.
“It’s absolutely a big deal,” you say. “In the last twelve hours, you’ve been held captive, interrogated, drugged, and also, part of a pretty bloody battle. It’s a big deal.”
“You were there, too,” Steve says lamely. As if he needs a reminder. The only thing that hurt more than being hit was watching it happen to you and not being able to do a damn thing to stop it.
“Uh-uh. Don’t even try that.” You shake your head. “You don’t think I know your game?”
“Game?” Steve asks.
“In the base. Anytime those guards so much as looked at Robin or me, you started running your mouth, pissing them off enough to draw the fire so it didn’t burn us. You’re the reason all I have to show for the day are a few bruises and scrapes.”
Steve’s lips part, but he can’t find any words to say. He’s just shocked you caught on. He shouldn’t be, but he is.
“I—” Steve starts.
You cock a brow, and Steve gives in, shrugging his shoulders.
“Better me than you or Robin,” he says. “I’ve been through worse.”
Except, he’s not so sure that’s true anymore. He’s told himself those words so many times, after each horrible, nightmare-inducing thing, but the truth is, each time is worse than the last.
That pattern doesn’t exactly bode well for him.
Your lips pull into a thin line. Steve can’t read your expression, but it makes something deep in his chest ache.
“I’m gonna ask you a question, and I want you to tell me the truth,” you say.
“That’s not ominous, or anything,” he says, trying at casualness like it’ll erase his blood and bruises.
“I’m serious,” you say.
Steve exhales sharply and says, “Shoot.”
A line forms between your brows.
“Are you okay?” you ask.
And he has no clue what to say.
The Steve who opened the door to you tonight is in no way the Steve from high school, who was confident and smooth and knew exactly what to say, but he’s still partly that guy. And if the situation was reversed—if it was him at your door, you with the injuries—he’d have this in the bag.
But no one has ever shown up at Steve Harrington’s door simply to make sure he’s okay.
Maybe that’s the reason he tells you the truth.
“No,” he says. “I’m not.”
Something inside him breaks as he says the words. Like he’s been held together by a clump of string for years, and the last one finally frays and snaps.
A sob climbs up his throat, and he tries to swallow it back down, but before he can, you’ve crossed the foyer and wrapped your arms around him. You bury your face in his chest and your fingers curl tight into the fabric of his shirt, and you’re warm and soft and even if you still smell a little bit like ash, Steve doesn’t care.
He stops fighting it. Lets all the horrible feelings, all the fear and loss and grief and regret, out of the cage he’s kept them locked in. He doesn’t even care how he must look, shaking in your arms, tears streaming silently down his cheeks and into your hair.
But you don’t seem to care, either, just holding him tight and whispering, “I’ve got you,” over and over. And he believes you. Just for a minute, in the dim front room, he believes you.
Eventually, Steve forces himself to extricate his limbs from yours, and he has to pretend the sudden loss of touch doesn’t sting. He’s already crossed all the lines he set so he wouldn’t ruin one of the few friendships he has.
“Look, it was cool of you to come over, but you really don’t have to worry about me. I’m fine. Or, I will be. I always am, you know—” Steve waves at nothing, both his hands raised.
“Stop.”
Your fingers close around his wrists, stilling them in their wild gesturing. Steve freezes, too, eyes snapping to yours.
“Steve?”
“Yeah?”
“Where’s your first aid kit?” you ask.
Steve sighs. “Bathroom.”
“Lead the way.”
-
You don’t leave after Steve’s many wounds have been disinfected and messily bandaged. And you’re still there when he gets out of the shower you order him into; he comes back into his bedroom to find you digging blankets and spare pillows out of the back of Steve’s closet.
It’s a clear message: you’re not going anywhere. Steve is so damn grateful he doesn’t have to ask for the company, he could kiss you.
Add it to the long, long list of reasons Steve Harrington wants to kiss you.
He stands in the bathroom doorway a moment, just watching you for a half a shorter longer than is not-creepy, before clearing his throat. You turn and a smile lifts your lips. Still, there are deep bags under your eyes, and your movements as you make a bed on the floor are slow, like you’re sore.
“You’re not sleeping on the floor,” Steve says, leaning a hip into the doorway and folding his arms over his chest.
“What, are you volunteering?”
“Me? Not a chance,” he says. “If you remember, I was held captive, interrogated, and drugged today.”
You roll your eyes at his
“So, you’re kicking me out, then?”
“No,” Steve says, and loses all his confidence. He clears his throat. “I mean, my bed isn’t exactly small, and we’re both mature adults, so I figured we could handle—” He gestures wordlessly, hoping he doesn’t have to finish the sentence.
To his relief, you just nod a few times, suddenly refusing to meet his eye.
It’s quiet as the two of you flutter about before sliding in on opposite sides of the bed. It’s awkward, but not as awkward as Steve expects.
It’s more awkward because it feels normal. It feels like getting into bed with you is an action he was always meant for, and he doesn’t mean sex.
He means, a little house and a white picket fence and his glasses on the bedside table. A stack of your books on the other and your shoes on the floor at the end of the bed and a little dog or cat that you and Steve named something goofy.
A beautiful little life, and it starts here, with him climbing silently onto a creaky mattress with you tonight to do nothing other than sleep.
Maybe he got hit harder in the head than he realized.
You and Steve lay flat on your backs, hands at your sides, only a few inches between you despite Steve’s earlier boasting about the bed’s size. If he moved, or you did, you’d be touching.
“I really thought you were going to die down there,” you say after a few minutes of quiet. Steve wasn’t sure you were still awake. “I thought they were going to kill you. Robin and I didn’t know what they were doing to you, but every few minutes, we heard your screams, and I swear—” You stop. Pause. “It scared the hell out of me.”
Steve doesn’t know what to say. Before he can figure something out, you go on, “If something happened to you, if I actually lost you, I don’t know what I’d do.”
And now Steve really has no clue what to say.
“You’d be okay,” he says. “And you don’t have to worry about me. You really don’t.”
“Yeah, I do,” you say. “Because if I don’t, who will?”
Steve stiffens. “I don’t need anybody’s pity—”
“It’s not pity, you idiot,” you say, angry and Steve isn’t sure why, isn’t sure what he said to piss you off. “I mean, three years now, I’ve watched you put everybody else first. You throw yourself in front of every single bullet from every single gun. And then, at the end of the fight, nobody… thanks you for it. I mean, you’re the only person who never really had a stake in this fight, but you stayed, because it was the right thing to do. Seeing people take that for granted, over and over, it kills me.”
Steve is quiet for a moment.
“What do you mean, the only one without a stake?” he asks. He rolls onto his side to face you, and though you dart a glance his way, your gaze drifts back to the ceiling.
“I mean, this all started with Will Byers, right? So, it makes sense that Mike and Dustin and Lucas were part of the fight. And then there’s El, which is self explanatory. Nancy and Jonathan were in it for their brothers. Joyce for her kid, and Hopper for Joyce. But you, Steve Harrington, you let Dustin into your car, and you drove onto the battlefield, and you never left. Haven’t you ever wondered why that is?”
“Because I’m an idiot, or I have a death wish, or both?”
“Funny,” you say. “You’re a good man, Steve. I really wish you could see it. I wish everyone could see it.”
“Me too,” he says quietly, so quietly he’s not sure he can hear.
You inhale. “You make me so mad sometimes, you know.”
“Not really a shock,” Steve says. “It’s kind of my thing.”
“No, that’s not—I don’t mean that. I mean, yeah, sometimes, but—” You turn your head and meet his eyes. This time, you don’t look away. “But you’re one of the smartest, toughest, bravest people I’ve ever met in my life, and I love the hell out of you for it, and it pisses me off because you still just see yourself as this asshole who deserves all the crap that comes at him. And you don’t.”
Affection swells in his chest, and it’s so big he can barely breathe, but it’s the best feeling in the world. He doesn’t even decide to kiss you. One second, he’s on his own pillow. The next, he lifts a hand to your cheek and lifts his head, leans in, presses his lips to yours.
And you kiss him back. You roll toward him, into his arms, and your hands are in his hair and your breaths are hot and uneven against his lips, and hell, all the alcohol and drugs in the world have nothing on you. Steve thinks he could do this forever.
It’s only when his brain starts to turn itself back on a few minutes later that he breaks away, forehead dipped against yours, and says, softly, “I love the hell out of you, too.”
You tilt your chin up, mouth finding his again, and you’re both smiling, limbs entangled and sheets twisted around you.
“And I kind of like when you take care of me,” he whispers.
“Good,” you say. “Because you should get used to it.”
“That sounds like a promise.”
“It is,” you say, “and I intend on keeping it.”
And though Steve hasn’t seen much but broken promises, he believes you. He kisses you again, and he can taste the truth on your lips.

THAT NEW AU. Paramedic eddie is so cute! and nurse steve is adorable. imagining him in scrubs though ;)
Do you have any headcanons for this verse yet?
RIGGGHT 🤤 Eddie and Steve in their respective bdu’s/scrubs that hug their butts so nicely.
Ahhh I do! Not many yet, but here are a few-
•Steve and Robin rent an apartment together. They went through nursing school at the same time and became best friends.
•Eddie became an EMT at 19, and a paramedic at 23.
•Eddie and Chrissy have been partners for 4 years.
•Steve only went to nursing school because his father told him he needed to do something with his life or he’d be cut off. He didn’t realize how much he would love it, and he’s happy he went through with it.
•Eddie can handle everything except vomit, that’s all Chrissy.
•Steve gets attached to kids that come into the ER and always checks up on them his next shift to make sure everything went well.
•Eddie doesn’t get angry easily, but put him in a situation with an abusive parent or spouse, and he has no problem yelling if the abuser tries to butt in.
•Robin is working towards becoming an RN like Nancy, while Steve is content for now with his regular nursing status.
•Eddie learned very quickly when he came on to Hawkins Fire and Rescue to keep his hair up at all times, or it can be used against him with combative patients. Aka- in his first month of being an EMT a wacked out and angry patient yanked his hair so hard he got a concussion from hitting the corner of the med box.

Buy Back the Secrets by allyasavedtheday | Rated: T | 18.8 k words | Complete
He casts his gaze to the right, to the voice he’d heard a minute ago and the hand still on his shoulder.
And, well. Okay. So Buck may have just been unconscious for an indeterminable length of time but he doesn’t think he’s exaggerating when he says the guy leaning over his bedside is one of the most attractive people he’s seen in a long time. Especially when his face splits into a smile that rivals the brightness of the hospital lights that almost just fucking blinded Buck a second ago.
“Welcome back, hotshot,” the guy says and it sounds fond – familiar – and Buck honestly has no idea who this guy is.
His brown hair is dishevelled on top of his head and his eyes look tired but then Buck notices the LAFD t-shirt so- alright. Someone from the firehouse, maybe? But he’s pretty sure he’d remember a face like that.
*
After getting hurt on a call, Buck wakes up thinking it's 2018. AKA Buck can't remember who Eddie is but he's pretty sure everyone's lying when they say they're "just friends."

Of course, all of that comes to a grinding halt when he stops outside the locker room to find arguably one of the hottest guys he’s ever seen getting changed right by his locker.
He stands there, gaping and trying desperately to get his mind out of the gutter – but Jesus, those abs – when someone bumps his shoulder and he turns to find Hen sidling up to him.
“Enjoying the view?” she asks with a knowing smirk.
Buck raises an eyebrow, feeling the corners of his mouth turn up in a smirk of his own. “He from B shift or something?”
Hen’s about to answer him when Bobby appears on his other side. “That’s Eddie Diaz, our new recruit.”
Buck’s brain does some approximation of a record scratch and he whirls around to face Bobby. “New recruit? Why?”

In which Eddie joins the 118 during season 1 instead of season 2 and Buck has a lot to say about it. AKA Eddie meets Buck 1.0.

KinnPorsche
Whittled Down by Another War by rageprufrock | Rated: E | 46.6 k words | Complete
Part 1 of Stunned With Falling
It starts with snide commentary on gelato and ends in a hail of bullets, Kinn running panicked down the filthy back streets around Thonglor Soi being chased by Sicilian shitbags who are pissed he doesn't want to ferry around their cocaine anymore.
The Sandman
On Fierce and Wild Wings by Aria_Lerendeair | Rated: E | 32.7 k words | Complete
After saving the life of the dragon Death of the Endless, Hob Gadling is given a boon - near-eternal life, same as the Dragon bestowing the gift. He finds himself in the castle of the Endless, serving the very family of dragons (or rather, one in particular) that had gifted him his long life.
Dream of the Endless does not need a caretaker, does not need a minder, but after Hob Gadling has been his Caretaker for more than a century, he has, perhaps, grown accustomed to the human. At least he does not mind Dream's sharp tongue.
Now, all would be well if Dream could, after centuries of looking, find his Rider, his other half, the one destined for him.
Fuckboi Hob vs The Endless Family Dinner by dancinbutterfly | Rated: E | 41.5.k words | complete
Part 1 of Fuckboi Hob
Kids like this don't make themselves.
He narrows his eyes and looks at the man, who could probably have him disappeared a dozen ways with nothing but a text, and weighs his options. He can feel Morpheus still shaking and decides - fuck it - and chooses violence. "You can call me Hob, Tim, and all you need to know is your son calls me Daddy, too."
It was supposed to be a joke listing. Bring a line cook parolee covered in body art in active recovery as your plus one to a family dys-function as revenge, haha, very funny. Only the posh stranger who reaches out to take Hob up on the ludicrous offer turns out to be wound so tight over his upcoming New Year's Eve dinner that Hob decides to make himself everyone's fucking problem. Dream's family won't know what hit them.

Hob Gadling, King Consort (And Friends) by Aria_Lerendeair | Rated: T | 12.4 k words | Complete
With several Nightmares poisoned and let loose into the Waking world in New York City, Hob steps in to help Dream get things sorted while Dream tracks down who was responsible.
Turns out that it might have been a bit of a trap. For Hob.
Good thing there were some tattooed teenagers with swords that were willing to help him out, after a brief inquisition or two.

Domestic Stucky Masterlist
Links Last Checked: October 5th, 2023
AKA the Greater New York PTSD Support Group (ao3) - triedunture E, 12k
Summary: They've successfully completed what might be the most dangerous mission in history: the recovery of the Winter Soldier.
Now comes the recovery of Bucky Barnes, which is turning out to be even more difficult.
A story about Bucky coming back to the surface with the help of Steve, Sam, pancakes, video games, the city of New York, assorted Avengers, and beds that--really, let's be honest here--are too soft to sleep on.
And I Jumped the Tracks (ao3) - showgirlsteve M, 2k
Summary: Sometimes, Steve Rogers is Captain America, superhero and living legend. Other days, he’s just the EMT filling in for the guy on ambulance 14 who had a sudden family emergency.
Sometimes, the Winter Soldier thinks he might be Bucky Barnes. Other days, he’s content to file legal papers in Matt Murdock’s tiny office without thinking of himself by any name in particular.
Both of them are waiting for the other to come looking.
between everything, yourself, and home (ao3) - napricot E, 24k
Summary: “This is your home?” asks Bucky at one point.
“It’s where I’m living now, yeah.”
Bucky comes home. Steve's a little slower on the uptake.
Captain America and the Great Pygmalion Debacle (ao3) - Chianine E, 31k
Summary: Bucky absolutely refuses to cut his hair and for the life of him Steve can't understand why.
The reason?
There's nothing in this world Bucky loves more than having Steve brush it...
Chronicles of Super Soldier Parents (ao3) - rememberednoah G, 12k
Summary: In which Steve and Bucky adopt a little girl. In which The Avengers think the little girl is theirs as much as she's Steve's and Bucky's.
It's Only Fair When I Do It To You (ao3) - stevebuckytickles N/R, 3k
Summary: Bucky's always said he wasn't ticklish, and whenever Steve tickled him it never really worked. This time though, Steve caught him off guard. He was only a little bit wrong about how ticklish he was.
Just Hold Me (ao3) - shanology E, 10k
Summary: Bucky Barnes is living in Avengers Tower, and all he wants in the world is to be cuddled. He sets out to get his new friends to give him the snuggling he needs, because it's not something he can ask of Steve yet.
Steve doesn't see it in quite the same way.
Also, there are Avengers movie nights, possibly with a showing of The Covenant. Just saying.
miles to go before i sleep (ao3) - Avelera T, 11k
Summary: Steve finds Bucky outside of the Smithsonian and invites him home.
A hurt/comfort, wish-fulfillment sequel to "The Winter Soldier". Also contains angst because, really, how could it not?
Nothing's As Sweet As Super Soldiers In Love (ao3) - heartsdesire456 T, 12k
Summary: Informally titled: Bucky Barnes Loves The 21st Century Almost As Much As He Loves Steve Rogers
pull apart the dark (ao3) - togina T, 78k
Summary: Steve's unending faith in his best friend was beginning to look less like hope and more like fantasy. When they'd caught the Soldier – in a fire fight that still gave Sam nightmares – the only thing the man seemed to recall was how to hit exactly where it hurt.
Four months later, Barnes still refused to speak English. Refused to heed anything but Steve's voice.
So, all in all, it was not a great time for Hydra to attack New York. All in all, Sam really wished they'd just killed him, instead of turning Captain America into a baby.
Season of all things (ao3) - Claudia_flies E, 26k
Summary: Steve really isn’t sure about sharing with an Alpha but he is starting to run out of options. There are only six Omega boarding houses in the city and Steve has been kicked out of four of them.
Or: A small town a/o/b AU that nobody asked for.
Something So Precious (ao3) - steveandbucky E, 38k
Summary: Bucky Barnes has two major weaknesses: small babies and big men.
Enter Steve Rogers: tall, blonde, all-around dream hunk, and awkward single parent.
The Bucky Barnes Guide to Household Management (ao3) - CryptoHomoRocker G, 5k
Summary: “Steve doesn’t even notice at first, is the thing.”
Or: Steve is unobservant, Bucky learns to be good at things that aren’t killing people, and knitting happens.
The Company You Keep (ao3) - orbingarrow G, 51k
Summary: Hurt, hungry, and on the run, the Winter Soldier doesn’t have a lot of safe options to go to for help. Figuring that any friend of Captain Steve Rogers is unlikely to be HYDRA, Bucky takes a chance and reaches out to the first Avenger he can find.
It works out better than anyone could have expected. Eventually.
Too Long We Have Tarried (ao3) - kototyph G, 19k
Summary: Bucky picks up the ring and holds it between them. “Steven Grant Rogers,” he says solemnly. “Will you marry me?”
You Are My Sunshine (ao3) - StrivingForImprovement G, 2k
Summary: Follow a day in the life of Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes as Steve happily delights over his day with his sunshine.

I loved that post you did about Bucky and Steve's medals, and I just had to ask what medals or ribbons do you think Sam might have gotten for his time in the military
link: Steve & Bucky’s Medals
Oh thank you Anon! 😊 It’s great to see people really seem to appreciate the work!
As for Sam...
.
10 Things we know about Sam Wilson...
He’s a Corporal (Senior Airman)
in the USAF Pararescue
He did 2 tours in Afghanistan
He was selected for test piloting Falcon wings
He was engaged in dangerous combat flight missions
Including one mission impressive enough for Nat to’ve heard of it
Machine guns are his EDC
He’s good with people
His heroism extends into civilian/non-combat situations
His colour is red.
.
Medals Breakdown...
1. He’s a Corporal (Senior Airman)
Senior Airman insignia (on L bicep)
USAF Pilot Badge (rather than the CIB. If he went into space with the Avengers he might be allowed to add an astronaut device! I don’t think he’d have the drone/UAV pilot badge because I’m not sure he had Redwing then / that badge came in after he had retired.)
Parachutist Badge jump wings (with gold star)
Air Force Training ribbon
2. in the USAF Pararescue/PJ.
Maroon beret (as in blood-red, like Monty’s!)
with the silver ‘that others may live’ flash badge on it 😭
3. He did two tours in Afghanistan
Overseas Service Ribbon (short tour)
Afghanistan Campaign Medal (ACM, with bronze arrowhead devices to show combat jumps/glides)
Air Force Expeditionary Service Ribbon with gold ‘border’
4.  He was selected for testing Falcon wings
Military Freefall Parachutist Badge (as in HALO jumps, with gold star! This winged dagger badge is funny to me cuz the parachute bit looks like turkey tail feathers.) 🗡
Test Pilot School Graduate patch (on L bicep; supposed to be 48-weeks training for planes!)
5. He was engaged in dangerous combat flight missions
Purple Heart (w/ oak leaf cluster; injury is very likely for PJs)
6. Including one mission impressive enough for Nat to’ve heard of it
Aerial Achievement Medal (possibly with oak leaf cluster; 20 flights of at least 2 hours with one flight per theater per day. This medal ribbon would be interesting to Steve and Bucky, because it looks like one of the Brit D-Day ribbons!)
&/or Silver Star  ⭐
7. Machine guns are his EDC
Marksmanship badge
8. He’s good with people
Gallant Unit Citation (possibly with oak leaf cluster)
Organizational Excellence Award (possibly with combat ‘v’ for valor device)
9. His heroism extends into civilian/non-combat situations
Humanitarian Service Medal (HSM) 👋🏼
Airman's Medal (for non-combat lifesaving; this one’s got a figure with Captain America/Mercury-like wings on his cap! and holding a bird! 🦅)
10. His colour is red.
Meritorious Service Medal. 🦅
What All That👆 Might Look Like:
Tumblr media
Possible career path...
6 months USAF BCT
2 years PJ ‘Superman School’, aka ‘The Pipeline’
(this course is so tough it has an 80% attrition rate! it means training all over the US, including parachuting, EMT-Paramedic training, and combat diving; just to qualify! So he probably would’ve been okay escaping from the submerged Raft prison, and if he’d still had his wings, and Bucky hadn’t done it, Sam could’ve saved Steve from drowning in the Potomac.)
2 years Afghanistan (1st tour)
did well enough on tour, in HALO jumps and at sailplane during BCT, that he was headhunted for FALCON test-piloting at:
1 year USAF Test Pilot School
2 years Afghanistan (2nd tour - with Riley)
= 7 1⁄2 years (?) in the USAF.
In this specific scenario, he would’ve made Airman just after finishing Basic/as he was starting the Pipeline, been an Airman 1st class by the end of the Pipeline, and qualified as Senior Airman near the end of his first tour.
One reason I like this yo-yoing path of training > combat > training > combat for Sam is because it means he’d have had first-person experience of coming back from tours -- both to go into further training, and because of a traumatic experience -- which is useful for a counsellor.
*Also, going to Test Pilot School after his first tour, instead of just re-upping, hints at Sam being perhaps a little discontented with his military life already, wanting something a bit more fun, and finding that with the Falcon wings. Losing Riley would’ve soured that for him. (He and Riley might have known each other from the beginning, or only met during Test Pilot school, or only after Test Pilot school, during his last tour).

Author Asks
Rules: answer these questions and tag five other fic writers to do the same.
I was tagged by the wonderful @five-wow. Thank you and sorry for such a long delay. Been so busy of late.
Author Name: Kristen999
Fandoms You Write For: I tend to be a solo fandom writer. I’ve written for Hawaii Five-O for almost nine years now! I hit one million words just in H50 fic!
I have dabbled in Daredevil, The Punisher, and The Defenders for a couple of years. Previously, I wrote for SGA for five years, and when I was wee one, CSI.
Random fact. Back in the old days where Computers ran on pedal power, I wrote in the ER fandom hosted on Yahoo Groups. That Group was made up of tons of nurses, doctors, and EMTs. The dedicated wrote huge Medical Resources for writing, there was a ‘page a nurse’ posts for help with research. Some of my first betas were in the medical professional. I owe much of my desire to write medically accurate(ish) scenes to my writing back then. J
Where You Post:  A03.
Most Popular One-Shot: I won’t use comments because that can be skewed by chapter count. I posted it as a single story and it’s one chapter, but it’s 38k words. Based on Kudos and Bookmarks.
Beneath the Trident  The guys are undercover: Steve as a SEAL Team leader, Danny as reporter for Rolling Stone. I love this story because it’s rooted in Danny learning about Steve’s connection with the SEALs by witnessing him in action. Danny really gets to see a side of Steve that he’s only seen pieces of, and he gains a ton of understanding, and perhaps finally accepts his attraction to the man who has been trying him bonkers for two years.
If you go by one-shot: as in a shorter story (I’m surprised by this)
Reluctant Allies (Or the Time Frank Had to Bring Home the Devil)
This was the first time I wrote Frank Castle and of course it’s a Frank POV dealing with one very annoying Matt Murdock aka Daredevil.:)
Most Popular Multi-Chapter Story:  No Way Out But Through
Another surprise! But this does have a bit of everything: action, hurt/comfort, Danny leading the case, some major fight scenes ,and Steve recovering the whole fic, but still being useful and competent. I liked this because Steve and Danny are together, but their relationship is tested by the events of the story and there is tension, but of course love and respect one another.
Favorite Story You Wrote: Just one?
I have a passion for history. So, my McDanno WWII Pacific Theater based AU.  Distant Shores
Bonus for: Crossroads is just a nice character piece.
Story You Were Nervous to Post:
The Hoku AU, future fic, post-apocalypse? Yeah, it’s a heavy story.
How Do You Pick Your Titles: I struggle with titles. Usually I want it to hint at the theme of the story, but many times it’s a quote or song lyrics.
Do You Outline: Yes. For anything over 10k I tend to outline. I bullet point important plot events which helps keep me in check, but allows me to change course if need be. I tend to research before and during a story. The research can actually create new arcs or change what I had intended, but I mostly stick to the original idea in my head.
How Many Of Your Stories Are Complete: All my fic in the last decade are complete. I don’t post WIPs because it causes me writer’s block.
In-Progress: One. I’m in the research stage for a new one shot.
Coming Soon: I’m not sure. I’m probably going to stick to one-shots for a while, although I consider anything under 10k a one shot so that doesn’t mean short. But I’m mentally fatigued and I spent a year writing Past Tense, so I’m good. Maybe it’ll allow me to do a couple of random codas.
Do You Accept Prompts: Not really. I sometimes ask friends for a prompt, but I tend to get blocked with a specific idea that is not my own.
Upcoming Story You’re the Most Excited For: Um, the one I’m researching now?  :-P

Supernatural fic masterlist
(updated 9/22/19)
I’ve written over 100 spn fics (ranging from ficlets to 70k big-bangs). Most of them are Sam-centric. The whole collection can be found here on AO3
newest fics:
Thirteen Taps of the Ivory Beak - Death is a transient thing. The bird knows this, because she herself is both alive and not. Her creator made her this way, not by choice but because of who he is. (1k; a companion piece to @denugis brilliant fic The Holy Grail Bird , told from the point of view of the bird)
Whosoever Holds - Just when Sam Winchester needs it most, Mjölnir returns to him. But is he really worthy? (2k, gen Sam Winchester, Steve Rogers; MCU/SPN crossover)
The Devil You Knew - Brady, not Azazel, had killed Jessica, all those years ago. And now he was sitting across from Sam, bound. Trapped. (1k; an alternate version of Sam’s confrontation with Brady in 5x20)
Wednesday - It’s Wednesday. It’s always Wednesday, he thinks, as he stands up and leaves the motel room, not sparing a glance at the other bed. (2k, Mystery Spot boyKing!Sam AU)
Tumblr media
Last Drop - art by @quickreaver -written for the Twisted Tropes event - Sam/Brady AU set while Sam’s at Stanford:  Sam is slowly adjusting to his new life at Stanford University. He’s left his life of hunting behind, and traded it for endless studying and tests, but he’s plagued by dreams of Dean and Dad in danger, dreams of blood and violence. Then he meets Tyson Brady, who’s always there with a smile and a cup of coffee to get Sam through all-nighters. Sam’s dreams start to fade, but just as he’s getting used to a nice normal life, he starts to develop abilities—powers he can’t control. Brady thinks they’re great, but Sam knows power never comes without a cost. (14k, Sam/Brady)
Some other favorites, in no particular order:
Tumblr media
Make Angels of Us All - art by @amberdreams1960  - Sam has a guardian angel. It’s been with him his whole life, trying to keep him safe. The angel gives Sam power he can’t control: power to move things with his mind, power over fire, and wings that nobody else can see—bony and jagged with scaly feathers. Dean says monsters aren't real, but Dad thinks they are. Sam's power scares him, and he’s not always sure what's real, but what he does know is people keep trying to kill the three of them, and he won't let that happen. (~20K, gen)
Tumblr media
Burdens, Doublefold - cowritten with @quickreaver, art by ileliberte What if Dean left Sam at Stanford after the fire, hoping it would keep his little brother safe and make things better? Somehow, 'better' never seems to be in the Winchester Family cards. Sam gets tangled up with his ex-roommate Brady, tracking psychics, but dealing with demons is never honest business. Dean carries on until his father is put in grave danger. He is left on his own to deal, stumbling into Harvelle's Roadhouse for help, where Dean gets just a little more than he bargained for. Eventually, the brothers’ paths twist and turn their way back to each other, but the results could mean the End of Days. (67k, gen, AU of seasons 1-2)
Before the One You Serve When Dean comes to get Sam at Stanford, he finds him living with Brady. And Dean doesn't trust Brady, even though he can't quite put his finger on why. Not at first. (5k, Sam/Brady)
Many more under the cut:
Tumblr media
He Who Fights Monsters - cowritten with nwspaprtaxis, art by @quickreaver AU of the summer between Seasons 3 and 4. Dean's dead, dragged down kicking and screaming to Hell. Sam's not dealing well. And Ruby’s got her work cut out for her. (52K, Sam/Ruby)
John Winchester is Dead They say those Winchester boys're crazy. Drive around in a big black beast and drink too much and laugh about mean things. They say their daddy's worse, but you never see him. He's just a voice on the other end of the phone or a darker shape in the back seat of their dark car. They say John Winchester died two years ago. (2k, gen, horror)
Breathing, Talking, Dead Man Walking   -  John Doe, male, approximately thirty-seven years old. Subject was found by EMTs in close proximity to the site of a sizable explosion in Lebanon, Kansas. (2k, gen, Sam & Dean)
Tumblr media
Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea - featuring art by @quickreaver When Sam opened Lucifer’s Cage, the only thing he found inside was Lucifer’s grace – his grace. With the return of his grace, Sam remembered his past – his war against the Host, his Fall, and his plans to bring about the End. The thing is…he doesn’t want the Apocalypse anymore. He likes things the way they are, and tries everything to keep his identity a secret- especially from Dean. Of course, the four Horsemen, Hell and Heaven have other ideas. (13K, gen)
Tumblr media
The Last Days in the Land of Nod - comic adaptation by @quickreaver The year is 2014. The Devil is wearing his finest, the Angel is human, and the Brother protects the survivors at Camp Chitaqua.
Tumblr media
The Two Ravens - art by @quickreaver Your brother he is, and heir to my throne. He’ll feed on the damned and he'll turn them to bone. (4k; fairy-tale)
Counteroffer About two weeks after Sam gutted a hellhound, completing the first trial, he started acting weird. (5k, psychological horror, gore)
Pattern Recognition: A Hannibal/Supernatural fusion AU  -  Sam and Dean split after River Pass, and their confrontation with the Horseman, War. Since Will’s escape from the Baltimore Institute for the Criminally Insane, he and Sam have been in hiding. They have a cabin, in the middle of nowhere, that keeps them off the radar; they find comfort in each other. But they can’t stay off the chessboard forever, especially not when Lucifer, wearing Hannibal Lecter as a vessel, is tearing the world apart around them. (33k, Sam Winchester/Will Graham)
Tumblr media
Impala's Run - cowritten with @quickreaver, art by adrenalineshots Sam and Dean Singer (aka Winchester) aren’t your average young Kansas farmers. Their home is very, very far from Kansas, in fact. Many light-years worth of ‘far’. The boys may look human, but certain talents set them apart: Dean speaks the language of machines, and Sam can heal through manipulating energy. Hidden on Earth by their father, their agricultural lifestyle gets rocked when warring alien races discover where they’ve landed, and Sam and Dean are forced to make the run of their lives. (23k, gen)
Tumblr media
All Our Wrath and Cutting Beauty - art by @quickreaver - Sam killed Alistair, but not before Alistair reminded Dean of who and what he’d become in Hell. Dean knows Sam can take down Lilith, and he’ll make damn sure Sam gets strong enough to do just that. They’ll stop the Apocalypse – together, no matter how many bodies stack up, or how much blood is spilt.(11k, horror)
Tumblr media
Diary of a Madman -Lydia’s newest patient, Sam Winchester, suffered from hallucinations, delusions, and regular bouts of insomnia. He also thought he was Lucifer. (4k, gen, horror)

Life Changes (Ch 4)
Aka the ‘shit hits the fan’ chapter
Peter was in a cloud of bliss the next day. He was waiting for nerves to set in, as his audition was at two. He ran through the song and the dance again, wondering if he should text Tony. He wanted to but also didn’t want to appear to clingy. Maybe a good morning text? That couldn’t hurt right? Peter unlocks his phone, pleasantly surprised to already see a text waiting.
Received Tony: Good morning Stella~ How did you sleep?
Peter tilts his head. Stella? Had he meant to send that to someone else? He felt a pant of disappointment.
Sent Tony: Who’s Stella? My name is Peter.
After that was sent, Peter’s phone started to ring and he panicked. He drops his phone and curses, scrambling to answer it.
“H-hello?”
“Good morning.” The smile was obvious in his voice.
“So who is Stella?”
He hears Tony laughing and Peter smiles at the sound but feels as if he’s missing something.
“ Peter, you are Stella. I’m Italian. Stella is Italian for Star. Because you’re a star.”
Peter feels himself blush. He felt stupid now.
“Hello? Peter?”
“S-sorry. I just feel stupid now.”
“Peter, I’m not seeing anyone else. I promise.”
“No I know that. I believe you. I just….I guess I’m just paranoid. It’s dumb. I’m so-”
“Peter. It’s okay. Don’t worry about it. I’ll figure out a nickname for you.”
Now Peter felt terrible.
“You don’t have to do that. It’s okay, really.”
“Peter.” Tony  says gently. “Are you okay? Really?”
“Yeah.” Peter takes a deep breath. “I’m fine. I think it’s just nerves.”
“Take a deep breath Peter. You’ll do great. I believe in you.”
“Thanks Tony. That means a lot coming from you.”
“Okay I gotta go. I’ll call you at lunch?”
“Yeah. That sounds great. I’ll talk to you the. Have a good day Tony.”
“Shine on beautiful.”
Peter couldn’t stop the smile on his face as the call ends. He puts his phone down on the bedside table and gets up. He had some time to kill before his audition and decided to spend it watching Star Trek: The Next Generation.
-----.------
Tony hangs up just as the elevator doors open and he nearly runs smack dab into Steve Rogers, his boss.
“Woah there.” Rogers takes a step back. “Head in the clouds Stark?”
“Nah. I was just on the phone is all.”
“How’s your tumor patient doing?”
“Better now. He was awake and sitting up when Strange left last night. I’m about to go check on him.”
“Well keep me posted. Oh and I need to see you at lunch, okay?”
Confused, Tony finds himself nodding.
“Alright, sure.”
“Don’t worry, you aren’t in trouble.” Rogers gives a smile.
“Well that’s a relief. I didn’t do anything wrong this time.”
Rogers laughs, patting his shoulder.
“This time.” He pushes the button on the elevator.
“If you’re headed to peds, tell Bucky I said hi.” Tony calls over his shoulder, taking off down the hall. Everyone knew the big scary man had a soft spot for kids. Tony stops outside of Aaron’s room. There was a group of people in there. He knocks softly on the door frame and Aaron looks up at him.
“Dr. Stark.”
“Good morning Aaron. How are you feeling?”
“My arm is kinda numb but other than that, I feel fine.”
Numb? It could mean nothing but in this profession, you always had to be sure.
“How numb on a scale of one to ten?” Tony asked, coming forward and setting the clipboard down.A tall, skinny boy with shoulder length curly hair scrambles off the bed and sits in a nearby chair, pulling his legs up. His eyes never left Tony. “Which arm?”
“Right. And maybe a four?”
“Can you feel this?” Tony taps his pen into the middle of Aaron’s right hand and the boy’s fingers twitch.
“It kinda feels like……” Aaron reaches out and ghosts the fingers of his left hand over Tony’s hand, just barely. He looks up, his dark eyes wide and scared. “Is that bad Dr. Stark?”
Tony bites the inside of his lip thoughtfully.
“Honestly I’m not sure yet but we will keep an eye on it. If it gets worse or better, let me know, okay?”
“Okay…”
“Is he going to be okay?” A soft voice asked. Tony turns. It was the lanky kid. He looked terrified and Tony felt bad for him. Before he could answer, Aaron spoke.
“Spencer I’ll be fine.” He smiles. “Right Dr. Stark?”
“You should be fine.” Tony nods. “But we just wanna make sure. You can’t leave for a week anyway. You need time to heal from the operation.”
“See? I’ll be fine. I’m too stubborn to die anyway, you know that.”
The other kid- Spencer - nods a little.
“Can I lay with him again?”
“Yeah. Go ahead kid.” Tony smiles and nods. He turns back to Aaron. “Where are your parents?”
“Missionary trip overseas.”
“So who are you hear with?”
“My girlfriend Haley-” He nods to a blonde girl who just entered. The girl, Haley, waves a little. “-and our boyfriend Spencer.”
“Okay, are you staying with an adult or something while your parents are gone?”
“David Rossi. He works at the police station.”
“I’ll give him a call and update him and be back here to check on you a bit.”
Tony turns and leaves the room, stopping to look in the window. Haley was sitting next to Aarons bed, holding his hand and Spencer was curled up at his side. It was sweet in kinda sad way. Tony moves to make his rounds, making his way down to the ER. A guy had split his head open trying to put up Christmas lights.
“It doesn’t look too deep.” Tony says, tilting the guys head towards the light. “I’m going to stitch it up and give you something for the pain. We’re going to do an MRI just to make sure you don’t have a concussion.”
The guy nods and sits still as Tony works. The work up was pretty quick and the MRI showed he didn’t have a concussion. Tony sent him on his way in an hour. He then makes his way up to Steve’s office. He knocks twice and then Steve opens the door. He smiles and waves him in.
“Make yourself comfortable.”
Tony settles on the couch, one leg drawn up and his arm draped across the back.
“So you finally have time for the little people?” Tony teases. He knew being chief of surgery was a full time job and Steve was under a lot of pressure.
“Tony you’re my best friend, I always try to make time for you.” Steve smiles, but was obviously nervous. He was never good at hiding that.
“So what’s up?”
“I uh, purposed to Bucky last night.”
Tony sits up, a grin on his face.
“Well it’s about damn time!”
Steve gives a sheepish smile and looks down at his hands.
“Yeah I know.” He looks back up and licks his lips. “I would like for you to be my best man.”
Tony gaped at him. “You mean it?”
“Of course I mean it. And you can bring a plus one. Maybe the dancer Stephen mentioned?”
Tony’s eyes brighten at the mention of Peter.
“You’re gonna love him.” He grins. “I’d be honored to be your best man. When is the wedding?”
“Um...We were thinking Christmas Eve.”
“That sounds beautiful.” Tony smiles again. “It’s been a long time coming.”
“Yeah. I agree. So does he.” Steve laughs a little.
Tony thought it was nice to see Steve smile again. It hadn’t happened in a long time due to the stress of his promotion, but he did deserve it. Suddenly Tony sits up.
“I gotta call Peter!”
“Okay you do that, I asked you what I meant to ask.”
“Congrats again. I’ll talk to you later?”
“I’ll be here.” Steve waves him off.
-----.-----
Peter paces the hallway, waiting for Tony’s call. His audition was in twenty minutes and nerves were eating him alive. Just as he was at wit’s end, his phone rang.
“Hello?”
“Hey what are you doing Christmas Eve?”
Peter raises his eyebrow.
“Uh...nothing. Why?”
“Wanna be my plus one at one of my best friend’s wedding?”
“That sounds like fun. I’ve never been to a Christmas wedding before.”
“Awesome! So, how’s your day going?”
“Well I audition in twenty minutes and my nerves are crazy. Which is normal but I really want this part. I’ve dreamed of getting this part for as long as I can remember.”
“You’ll crush it. I have no doubt in my mind.”
“I hope so too. So how is your day going?”
“Pretty good I think. My patient, the one that made me late last night, he seems to be doing a lot better and I fixed a guy’s head. He fell putting up Christmas lights.”
Peter laughs.
“Well is he okay at least?”
“Yeah. Just needed stitches. He had a hard head. Like someone else I know. How’s your head by the way?”
“I’m fine. It didn’t hurt much when I hit it and it’s fine now.”
Peter was touched that Tony cared.
“Well I’m glad. I’d hate to see such a lovely head damaged.”
“My aunt says it’s to thick for my own good.”
“Ah well that just means your brain is protected.” The smile was basically audible in Tony’s voice.
Peter turned when he heard his name called.
“Peter? The person who was supposed to go on before you didn’t show, so it’s your turn.” The director explains.
Peter thanks him and turns back to the call.
“I gotta go. My audition got moved up.”
“Shine on beautiful. Knock em dead.”
“I’ll call you soon as I’m done.” He promised and hangs up. He squared his shoulders and makes his way to the stage, taking his place. He closed his eyes and takes a deep breath. The music starts and Peter is suddenly fine. All his nerves disappear.
The dance involve a lot of footwork and Peter felt that he had it down. That was until his feet got caught and he crumpled, crying out in pain. His head cracked against the stage as pain shoots up his leg. Then all went dark.
-----.-----
Pepper rolls her shoulders as an ambulance pulled up.
“What do we got?” She asked an EMT.
“Shattered leg and likely a fracture on the skull. Felt like his entire leg is broken. It’s pretty bad.”
Pepper immediately leapt into action, helping get the gurney down. Her stomach dropped when she sees the face of the person on the stretcher. She turns to an intern standing with her.
“Page Stark. Now.”
“Stark? But shouldn’t we page ortho-”
“Page Stark! Now! Put ‘Iron’. He’ll know what it means.”
That was their code word for ‘drop everything and get your ass here to help me’. Pepper hurries along side the paramedics.
“Peter? Peter! Stay with me!”

[Overwatch, MCU] Old Stories, New Faces Chapter 3 Writing Notes
-Amelie has PTSD. So do Jack and Gabe, but they’ve (mostly) got a better handle on their symptoms. Winter Soldier has triggered re-experiencing symptoms for her. Certainly not what Gabe and Sombra were hoping for when they made the decision to rescue him.
-Sombra’s specialty may be software and that’s where she made improvements for Bucky, but she’s certainly familiar with hacking Jessie’s arm to make changes/updates to the hardware now that’s she’s gotten a good look.
-Gabe’s a little off on the mark of where I would see Jack in the medical field--physical therapy or EMT. Like seriously, my brain slots him as an encouraging but very stern PT or OT.
--Bucky is 6’0 (aka wikipedia lists Sebastian Stan as 6’0), and in my headcanon, Jack is 6’2, and Gabe is 6’1. (For Jack and Gabe, that’s their respective heights WITHOUT their boots. Additional Headcanon: Gabe keeps his heels high enough to make him either equal in height or just a bit taller than Jack. Gabe’s eternally annoyed because Jack shot up after injections-- why not have more parallels with Steve in this ‘verse especially, even if not so dramatic--and Gabe has never gotten over it.) ANYWAY, in general, I think both Jack and Gabe would have a larger build, but not so much that their clothing would be completely loose on Bucky
-There’s moments when I appreciate the ability to have weird connections between Captain America and Jack and Gabe’s histories and then I remember that Gabe Jones is the African American in Howling Commandos.
-Bucky’s listed as older than Steve; and while he’s thinking cryochambers, Jack is thinking of how timelines and time travel make affects who is older; by the number of years since birth, Jack is older.
