Seven Sentence Sunday
I was on a roll today and felt like sharing early. Been a long time since I've had this feeling. :) Tomorrow's going to be a reading day, so I thought I'd share a snippet from my Sci-Fi of Doom fic.
..
The air felt different, recycled, tinged with metal and something Buck couldn't place. It was freezing, like there was no source of heat. His breath visible with every exhalation.
One thing was certain, they were inside a large underground structure with hallways leading to the east and west.
“Captain, maybe we should head back,” Chim said, shining his flashlight at the floor.
Buck pulled out his own light, scanning the ground, his lip parting in surprise. “Why are there bullets everywhere?”
Eddie put his medical bag down, crouching to study one. “They’re shell casings. Looks like an automatic rifle.” He bit his lip. “There’s hundreds of them.”
Buck swallowed past a large lump in the back of his throat. He was a first responder, having witnessed numerous accident scenes and his fair share of scary situations. But this was different. All the hair along the back of his neck stood on end, a queasy feeling of dread lodging in his stomach.
He took a step back, looking from Eddie’s grim expression to the worried faces of his teammates, his gaze settling on Bobby, who was obviously struggling with the next decision.

Follow You Into The Dark - 15k
Relationships: Evan "Buck" Buckley/Eddie Diaz (9-1-1 TV) Characters: Evan "Buck" Buckley, Eddie Diaz (9-1-1 TV), Howie "Chimney" Han, Henrietta "Hen" Wilson, Bobby Nash Additional Tags: Hurt/Comfort, Action/Adventure, Hurt Evan "Buck" Buckley, Hurt Eddie Diaz (9-1-1 TV), Canon-Typical Violence, Protective Evan "Buck" Buckley, Protective Eddie Diaz (9-1-1 TV), Feelings Realization, Arson, Temporary Character Blindness, Temporary Character Hearing Loss, Mutual Pining Series: Part 6 of BTHB Summary:
Buck kept a firm grip around Eddie’s arm as he was guided down hallways. They’d both experienced something like this before during the Academy: cadet’s exercises where both teammates were blindfolded and forced to depend on the other to escape burning buildings. This wasn’t unlike that experience, except of course this was real and Buck’s freaking eyes were swollen shut and Eddie was concussed and deaf.
(Or a serial arsonist terrorizes the city, plunging Buck and Eddie into a dangerous game of cat and mouse.)

Eddie stared at the radio, knowing this time there’d be someone on the other end to hear him if he needed to say something. If his time his second chances had finally run out.
He wouldn’t die alone. Not really. His team would be there. Just inches away. He could tell them, tell Buck….

Fuck it Friday
What is this? Kristen sharing more than once in a given week. Do I have a fever?
Still taking a short break from my longer epic to bring you more from the: Tommy's pursuit of Eddie and the craziness that ensures whenever they're around his best friend. :)
..
Eddie popped the cap of his beer and sat next to Tommy. “I told you he was coming for the pay-per-view over yesterday.”
Evan made a sound between a laugh and a chuckle. This kid had way too much pent-up energy.
Right. Time to strike up a conversation with the obvious, protective something something work partner. “I didn't know you were into MMA?"
Evan looked at spot where Eddie and Tommy were sitting together like he was trying to figure out how to wedge himself between them. He remained standing. “Well, it’s you know, it's always fascinated me.”
Eddie did a double take. “Since when?”
“Since, um, your fight club days.”
It was like someone scratched a needle across a record. Eddie looked confused while Evan looked down at his shoes in sudden fascination. It was like an unspoken rule had been broken, which was ironic given the topic of conversion.
And while Tommy could feel the tone shift in the room, h knew some valuable intel was about to be left on the table. He took another sip of beer. “Fight club?”

Seven Sentence Inspiration Sunday
I'm writing a lot of intricate, crazy action at the moment, so it's a challenge to share anything from the last 5k words. So, have a new, extended piece of an earlier scene in the Sci-Fi of Doom story! that I am still working on until the end of time. :-P
...
“Did you ever handle your weapon outside of basic?”
“I was a Staff Sergeant conducting medevacs in multiple hot zones. What do you think?”
Buck groaned internally at the attitude. Because nothing pressed Eddie’s buttons like being talked down to. A by-product of his childhood, Buck suspected.
But the bravado left an impression on Wilkes who regarded Eddie in a whole new light. A light that Bobby didn’t appreciate based on the way crossed his arms in front of his chest his implication crystal clear. He’s, my guy. Not yours.
“Did you arrive with a full platoon?” Eddie asked.
“Half.”
Eddie raised his eyebrows. “How many squads?”
“Three.”
Nerves filled Buck’s chest as Eddie’s expression went from incensed to solemn. “Where’s the rest of your men?”
“I don’t know, Staff Sergeant.”
Buck found himself stepping in front of Eddie, which he knew was unprofessional and inappropriate, but he hated the way Wilkes addressed Eddie. Like he’d already drafted him.  No one was drafting Eddie into this…this whatever this was. Not after learning that most of the colonel’s men were either missing or dead.
“Everyone just calm down,” Bobby warned.
Buck didn’t move away from Eddie, acting as a barrier between him and Wilkes, his intent clear: back away.
Before the situation could escalate further, they all flinched as one at a noise above them.
Something was inside the ceiling making a banging, rattling sound.
Wilkes and his men pointed their rifles at the noise.

Fav Lines Game
I was tagged by @dangerpronebuddie and @diazsdimples. Thank you!
rules: share your favorite lines of paragraphs you've written from one of your fics, posted or wip.
Alone In The Dark With You 14k
And he as so damn cold, it seeped into his muscles, his bones. Eddie huddled against Buck’s good shoulder, Buck attuned to Eddie’s exhales and inhales. Sometimes Eddie would doze off and Buck would have to wake him. While it seemed like Eddie’s concussion was the least of their worries, it still mattered to him.
They were both in pain, both miserable, but able to take up refuge with each other, finding comfort in touch, closeness, holding hands for warmth and for contact, Eddie’s fingers intertwined with Buck’s. Buck squeezing Eddie’s gloved fingers with every hitch to his breathing.
...
Hold the Pain, Release Me 6k
Eddie could handle chaos. Large-scale disasters, prioritizing tasks, evaluating risks. He thrived in stressful situations where he could focus on the jobs at hand and push everything else out of the way; it was what made him a good combat medic and firefighter.
But sometimes, after the adrenaline had faded and the faces of those who died appeared inside his head at the most unexpected moment. When he remembered the color of someone’s eyes or the rosary beads clutched in a woman’s hands, the crying of a young girl as she huddled in fear under the mangled remains of a crushed car, or the terrified breathing of a man who’d just wanted to know if his wife was alive—all those details came rushing back.  Usually when he was in bed, or alone in the firehouse showers, where the sights and sounds finally caught up to the part of the brain Eddie had turned off.

Seven Sentence Sunday
Still plugging along at my Sci-Fi of Doom fic. Still having fun. Maybe not the 118, though :)
...
The creature continued moving toward Buck, taking its time. The damn thing looked like it was made entirely of cartilage and bone. Not in a malnourished way, but thick, like an exoskeleton.
Which based on every documentary he’d seen on birds and lizards meant it probably ran freakishly fast.
Buck kept backing away and it kept stalking forward. It was going to attack, he could tell by the way it stayed hunched over, like predators did before striking.
"Can’t you shoot it with your flamethrower?" Bobby hissed.
"Not without making your guy a roasted marshmallow."
Gripping his Halligan, Buck readied himself. Instinct told him to aim for the thing's head, but his gut said the strong boney structure was too well protected.
Did it even have a weak spot?
Swallowing, he watched Bobby inch closer.
"Don’t!" Buck warned.
"I can’t let you fight it alone."
"Maybe if...I duck. You could fry him?"
The creature titled its head to the side, chittering at a new, lower octave. As if in responding to....
Then he heard it. A clicking noise from a different direction.
A chill went down Buck’s spine. "Um, guys. I think there’s a second one behind me."

Seven Sentence Sunday
Making more headway on the Sci-Fi of Doom fic. I'm excited to finally start escalating the situation. *evil grin*
...
Colonel Wilkes’ answer was simple.  “Convey. Our enemy is smarter and stronger. All we can do is keep it at bay while we fight our way out.”
That didn’t sound like  a plan at all. Buck couldn’t be the only one who thought that was a very bad idea.
“Fight with what?” A civilian demanded. “Throw beakers at them.”
“She made something,” Athena said, pointing at Becky’s flamethrower.
“This is a lab,” Wilkes barked. “Figure it out.”
The botanists started whispering with each other.
Colonel Wilkes regarded Athena and Bobby with less hostility. “Do any of your people have military or weapon's experience?”
Buck’s heart thumped inside his chest.
Bobby and Athena had a whole conversation in silence, debating between them.
“I do,” Eddie said.
Of course Eddie volunteered that tidbit of information about himself.  Buck resisted the urge to shake him.
Wilkes looked over in surprise. Eddie held his head up high. “I was a combat medic. Did two tours in Afghanistan.”
“And did you ever handle your weapon outside of basic?”
“I was a Staff Sergeant conducting medevacs in multiple hot zones. What do you think?”
Buck groaned internally at the attitude. Because nothing pressed Eddie’s buttons like being talked down to. A by-product of his childhood, Buck suspected.

Tidbit Tuesday
Tagged by @dangerpronebuddie and @diazsdimples. Thank you!
I find having a few scenes of humor are pretty necessary when writing a suspense and terror story. So, have a brief bit of levity in the Sci-Fi of Doom story :)
..
"So, you and the other hot firefighter are dating?"
Buck did a double take at the out of the blue question. "What? No. What?"
Becky squinted at him through her glasses. "You were declaring your undying love to him earlier. Well, to your boss, so he could tell him. Which is way less romantic."
"Not my undying love."
"Well, you thought you were dying. So, yeah. You kind of were."
Buck ignored her, but all it did was wind her up even more. Becky spun around so fast he almost collided with her. "Oh, my god, he doesn't know. This is so extra. How long have you been pining for him?"
His cheeks started turning pink. "Can we move on now?"
"I’ve been fighting for my life for the last two days. You will allow me to bask in this rom-com of glory." She grabbed his shoulder in excitement. "You have to tell him now. Like you need to embrace him with a mad passionate kiss or something."
"Um."
"You can't keep something like that to yourself. It’s not fair to you or to him."
Buck searched Bobby for help, but Bobby shook his head. "She actually has a point."
Traitor.

WIP Wednesday
I'm 16k words into the Sci Fi of Doom and my brain needs a short break before the next 10ks words /o\
Here's a snippet of something percolating in my brain which I haven't seen much of. Tommy's pursuit of Eddie and the craziness that ensures whenever they're around his best friend.
We'll see where this goes....
...
See, the 118 were notorious for big time rescues and chaos. At least in the years since his departure. He always wanted to get to know the new crew, he certainly heard their names mentioned enough. In the newspapers, on radio calls, whispered like urban legends to be feared and awed.
Now that he had faces and first names to go with all the stories, a few pieces slotted into place.
Tommy enjoyed puzzles, he played enough during his downtime, but he thrived on adrenaline. Loved the rush. Sent a jolt of energy down his spine, into his toes, giving him motivation to wake up every day.
It was one of the reasons why he excelled as a chopper pilot in the Army. Riding that wave of danger to the very edge while helping people at the same time. A win-win in his book.
Most first responders were cut from the same cloth, filled with passion, dedication with a side of insanity.
Eddie and Buck did not disappoint in that department, both volunteering to repeal down to a capsized ship in hurricane winds to save their captain.
"Are you sure about this," he asked over the coms.
"Seen and done crazier," Diaz said, over the radio.
Oh, really? He could visualize the cocky self-assured grin from his pilot’s seat.
And when he pushed his bird to the limit and Eddie and Buck returned triumphant with their Captain in hand. Tommy vowed to get to know them both better.
When Diaz texted him the next day, Tommy knew he was in for a wild time.

Fuck It Friday.
I wasn't going to share anything today, but I'm still giggly and brain-fried from the week, so why not? Thanks to @exhuastedpigeon for the tag.
More from the Sc-Fi of Doom fic.
....
He sniffed the air for the scent of vinegar, sticking to the walls, holding on to his halligan for dear life. Bobby was going to strangle Buck once he caught up to him. Eddie would kill him with his bare hands.
But if their roles were reversed Eddie would have done the same thing. No question. They swore an oath to protect others.
Hell, if anything he should be pissed at Eddie for putting himself in the crosshairs by volunteering the fact that he’d had military experience.
Because that’s what he did. Put a giant spotlight on himself, battlefields are my thing Diaz.
Like he’d hadn’t left a part of his soul in that downed helicopter crash in the desert.
He bristled.
But he needed Eddie to be alive so he could yell at him. And that meant Buck needed to find Bobby and Becky and Lydia and….
Where the hell was he?
He glanced around at the same dark gray walls and dark gray floor. The last time he’d been in this section he’d been running for his life.
Okay, so this was really dumb.
He didn’t know where he was going. Shit.
At the very least there weren’t many options. No other hallways or rooms. He kept walking, debating if he should call out to Bobby.
But what if it attracted the attention of…them?
Was he being foolish? It made more sense that terrorists were roaming around instead —
A screeching echoed down the hallway.
He froze, his heart hammering inside his chest. Buck clutched his halligan, tasting blood from how hard he bit his bottom lip.

Fuck It Friday
I write at a snail's pace, but I'm happy with the progress I'm making on the Sci Fi of Doom fic. Thank you to @exhuastedpigeon @diazsdimples @wildlife4life and @hippolotamus for the tags this week.
..
Eddie took a spot by the door to keep an eye on the hallway to ensure no one would catch them by surprise.
Buck, ever inquisitive, poked around the drawers of the lab, glancing over at Eddie every once in a while.
There were multiple victims from whatever carnage had taken place. The person or persons responsible were still at large.
A feeling of déjà vu came over him, remembering the time they were trapped inside a prison riot. Or called to a scene during a violent domestic dispute.  Or any number of medevac missions from a lifetime ago.
All eliciting the same fear-adrenaline fight or flight response. The one that made every muscle tense and put his senses on full alert.
He hated it.
Chim wandered over, Bobby meeting him halfway to get an update.
“We’ve treated her for lacerations to her arm and shoulder. Other than blood loss, she’s dehydrated and in shock.”
Bobby nodded. “Did she give you any other details about what happened?”
“Not really. She’s pretty shaken up.”
“What about other victims?”
“She’s just too traumatized,” Hen said, joining them. “But I think we should look for them.”
“This place is massive,” Chim said. “How would we even begin searching for victims? Not to mention, we’re kind of sitting ducks.”

We’ve Got Fun & Games
Relationships: Evan "Buck" Buckley/Eddie Diaz (9-1-1 TV) Characters: Evan "Buck" Buckley, Eddie Diaz (9-1-1 TV), Howie "Chimney" Han, Henrietta "Hen" Wilson, Bobby Nash, Ravi Panikkar Additional Tags: Humor, Fluff, Mutual Pining, Idiots in Love, Action/Adventure Summary:
"Um. You trained for this?” Ravi asked.
Eddie released a long-suffering sigh. "We trained. Every day. For a month.”
Buck could not believe his ears. Did they not grasp the glory of the great adventure before them? He cleared his throat and lowered his voice. “Running across the scorching plains of Africa, bolting down the steep steps of Shanghai, diving straight into synchronized swimming routines with Olympic athletes in Moscow. These are only a few obstacles we might encounter during…The Amazing Race."
Bobby frowned. "This is for charity.”
Buck spread out his arms to encompass the couple hundred people mingling around the park. "And it’s against all the other firehouses in the city. We do have a reputation to uphold."
For @ci5mates :)
