"OK SO ! I have some absolutely true and vital information for those Baldur's Gate Astarion fans out there. Some of you may be aware that some fans decided to research the etymology of Astarion’s name, and found that it was very close to the Ancient Greek name Asterion—which means ‘Little Star.’ Thus, fandom decides to latch onto this angsty beautiful meaning and extrapolate with tons of fanart and poetry and such.

But it’s more than that!!! and so much funnier!!!

I’m taking a lot of university courses about Ancient Greece, and in one of my classes I discovered this: “Cannabis went by a variety of names. In the first century CE, Dioscorides (1907-1914, Materia Medica 3.148) mentions kannabion (a diminutive form, “little cannabis,” “dear cannabis”), skhoenostrophion (“rope-twister”), and asterion (“little star”).”

TL;DR — the name Astarion is derivative of Asterion, which was code for WEED in Ancient Greece, because of the star shaped flowers. It's like the ancient equivalent of naming a child Mary Jane.

I always see people argue about this and it is annoying. But it is okay if people all write a character slightly different in fanfic. It’s FANFIC. No one is actually changing a character or writing new canonical source material. Who cares if a character is slightly OOC, perhaps it works for the fic or for the image the writer has. Sometimes fanfics are a self-fulfilling fantasy just using the authors favorite characters. Sometimes fanfic authors like to insert a bit of themselves into the story to create their self-fulfilling fantasy. It’s really not that big of a deal. 

Like being in the Wednesday fandom, I see some people write her as a slightly villainous, violent psycho. And some people write her as an edgy teenage Addams with more limited violent craziness. The world never ends, even if I don’t like some of the authors choices/characterization. No one’s getting paid lmaoo this is a hobby purely for our own enjoyments and hopefully some others too.

Isn't that the most amazing thing ever? I'll give you an example:

I write the most self indulging piece ever! It's angsty, it's hurtful, it's downright sad and I might even kill a character or two just for the whim of it. What happens?

They read it!!

The best part? They comment and still like what you write! Like: oh well, this was not my cup of tea... I prefer fics where the characters I love don't suffer more trauma then what they already have and... You know... LIVE! But I still loved it! Thank you for sharing! ❤️🤗

And I just want to cry!

Because I feel loved! I mean! I wrote that crazy, weird, indulging thing because I have a disturbed mind and just wanted to play around with some horror themes, trauma and angst but hey... You loved it? 😭 I'm crying happy tears now and I want to hug you!

the amount of fanfic writers that came out of the woodwork just to write saltburn is so valid because i too wrote something for saltburn (cattonquick) and i haven't wrote a fanfic since i was in wattpad (i was writing ouat ff) and it didn't have ads when i left. This is the most active ive been in tumblr in the 20s and i keep on reloading the tags just to see if someone gets it like i do and im so glad so many people did. this app was made for saltburn, i just hope we get that peak tumblr era content ive been craving for.
