How Amazing Could This Ukrainian SFF Anthology Get?

On September 1, we launched a Kickstarter to fund Embroidered Worlds, an anthology of fantastic fiction from Ukraine and the diaspora. We are working to spread the word far and wide about this collection of Ukrainian authors, many of whom have never been translated into English before.

The more people we can reach during the Kickstarter campaign, the more incentives we can unlock to make this book even more special!

If we reach our $30,000 goal, we will hire three Ukrainian artists to create interior illustrations, and include those in all editions of the book. At $50,000 we will make available a limited-edition, numbered hardcover, with art prints of the cover and illustrations that can be framed.

HOW AMAZING WOULD IT BE TO HAVE ILLUSTRATED, LIMITED-EDITION NUMBERED HARDCOVERS WITH ART PRINTS!?!

We raised $10,000 in 4 days. Can we double that in a week?

Embroidered Worlds is scheduled for publication in December 2023. Anyone wishing to join in supporting the book has until Sept. 30 to do so, at levels ranging from a $1 ebook order to a $1,000 benefactor gift.

This photo shows six members of the National Writers’ Union of Ukraine from Mariupol in 2019. In 2022, the Russian World killed three of them. Natalia Kharakoz, Evgen Bal, and Bohdan Slyushchynsky all died in March or April. The story of Evgen Bal’s death is quite terrible. Victoria Amelina

Victoria Amelina was born in 1986 in Lviv, Ukraine. Amelina's debut novel was published in 2014. Her 2017 novel Dom's Dream Kingdom was shortlisted for the European Union Prize for Literature and the UNESCO City of Literature Prize. In 2021, Amelina received the Joseph Conrad Literary Award from the Polish Institute in Kyiv. Her work has been translated into several languages, including German, English, Italian, and Polish. During the war in Ukraine, Amelina set her writing aside to work for the human rights group Truth Hounds, traveling to liberated areas to record the testimonies of witnesses and survivors of Russian crimes.

Victoria Amelina died in 2023 at the age of 37 from injuries sustained in a missile strike.

For Russians, good or bad, the war and Ukraine are usually all about them. That is why now, more than ever, we must work to recover Ukrainian culture as a whole from its marginalization.

I first visited Ukraine, a country I had always thought of as my country, in 1992 after my Aunt had returned from Komi in North Russia to her homeland. It was very different from the country of my Ukrainian textbooks, with a Cossack astride a rearing horse on the front cover or Ivan Franko and Taras Shevchenko staring sombrely at the reader.

The Ukrainian nationals on the flight were at the back of the plane. I was near the front, my Saturday School Ukrainian, which I had learned badly, inadequate for communication. My supposedly fellow Ukrainians were foreign to me, and I to them.

After we landed, I found a bookshop that had no Ukrainian books at all. I asked where they were. There was an empty bookshelf labeled Ukrainian literature behind a cord to stop readers from approaching.
