One thing about Duke that I feel needs a canon deep dive in terms of all of the batfamily is how Duke wasn't there for the traumas that the family has experienced and how he changes the entire dynamic of the batfamily as a result.

I can explain by getting a little personal. My family went through a lot of pain bc my brother was born about 15 weeks early, and barely survived. But I was born a few years after and saw all of that stuff as normal. Me not knowing/experiencing that traumatic event changed the family dynamic. my mother has called it filling in the cracks(basically calling me the glue of the family).

Now how does this relate to Duke? Well, the closest he knew of what the joker did to Barbara and Jason was likely news articles his parents talked quietly about after he went to bed. He had maybe interacted with Batman twice before his family was targeted, and never saw most of Damian's arc to redeem himself. He was in the foster system when Bruce died, and didn't form we are Robin until down the line. Duke joined long after these events occurred or after they were mostly resolved. His view of the batfamily is normal normal to him. It's not like dick's, who likely longs for a time when Bruce wasn't so closed off, or before Jason was killed. Duke's normal isn't like Tim or Steph's, who joined when Bruce was grieving Jason, and along with Cass and Damian, their normal was shattered by Bruce's "death".

Duke knows these people are messed up, don't get me wrong, but the ways they are messed up is just who they are to him from his introduction to them. And the difference between being there in someone's past vs. only knowing about it after the fact is something that I find relatable with Duke.

It's the reason that I think Duke and Jason get along fairly well outside of just their similar stories. Duke may have heard stories of how jason was before, but it's never in the context of Jason not being alive or an in memoriam. He compares those stories about jason to the way he is now instead of vice versa.

The same can be said for Damian and Cass. He's heard stories about how they were raised to kill with no mercy and made an incredible journey to not do that anymore. But to him it's context rather than who they are. He may be one of the only people who truly sees Damian as someone trying to get through middle school while being Robin. And the dynamic he has with Cass has so much love and support when either of them is going through something.

Duke, whether he knows it or not changes several of the dynamics of the batfamily. I realized that I've never made this post and I feel like I have to.

A few days late but hey, better late than never! This is a non-comprehensive list of my favorite fics that I’ve read in 2023! Criteria for a fic to be included on this list are:

New Wave by yellow_caballero Batman (gen), 103k, Reverse Robins, Stephanie Brown is Robin Some lunatic in a bat costume is running around Gotham clowning on fools, but local delinquent Stephanie Brown has way bigger problems. When her father and friends start joining mob wars Steph knows she has to do something about it before Gotham collapses. If that means joining up with rich dudes playing dress up, pasty nerds with hacking and photography habits, and throwing on a costume herself, then that’s just what she’ll have to do. Even if Batman works alone. She’s convincing. In which Stephanie Brown rocks the radical nineties and becomes the first Robin, ruining Batman’s life and giving Tim Drake a hobby.

Keep Your Head, Your Backbone, and Your Heart by MrMich Batman (gen) 54k, Dimension Travel, Duke Thomas-centric The last thing that Duke expected on what was supposed to be just a regular patrol was being suddenly thrown five years into the past, coming face to face with a darker, more violent Batman than the one he knew, a broken family, and a Tim who was a foot shorter than Duke, and not even Robin yet.

Loading and Aspect Ratio by JUBE514 Batman (Superbat), 45k, Wings AU A world where nobody has wings, but people think they do, and that changes everything.

Our Bodies & Other Fine Machines by SilverSkiesAtMidnight Batman (gen), 13k, Starvation He has never argued with a punishment, not since he was a toddler, if then. Surely she’ll listen, surely she’ll see this is too harsh, that he wouldn’t be disrespecting her like this if he was simply sulking over not getting his way. She reaches out to pat his cheek, and for a moment his heart soars hopefully, and he barely restrains himself from leaning into the rare bit of contact and soaking up his mother’s touch. “Oh, Timothy,” she tuts. “This is for the best. You, Me, and the Humanity in Between by JUBE514 Batman (gen), 65k, Non-Human Robins Bruce is trying his best to protect the city that he loves. He doesn't know how exactly his Robins came to be- they're not fully human, not even at all. All he knows is that he wants to keep them safe.

Little Red by destiny919 Batman: Under the Red Hood (gen), 39k, Series, Jason is Tim’s Parent AU where Tim is younger and has been illegally adopted by his hero, the Red Hood.

A Different Game by Hinn_Raven Batman (multi), 62k, Red Hood!Stephanie Brown, Role Reversal Stephanie Brown died with a mouth full of blood and her eyes wide open, staring at the locked door, hoping still for a miracle, for a rescue. She died in a hidden place, still hanging from the ceiling by her wrists, bleeding out from a wound in her stomach, and no one was with her when her heart gave its last beat. AU where Stephanie Brown dies as Robin and becomes the Red Hood.

bad news, this place is magic as fuck by mikkal Batman (gen), 28k, All-Caste Jason Todd, Magic Jason Jason's on the trail of a killer who's targeting kids in Crime Alley for an unknown magical ritual. Between that and his family who insists on butting in, he's got his work cut out for him. But, as they say, nothing is as it seems.

Wings over Gotham by icarus_chained Batman, DC (gen), 190k, No Man’s Land, Independent Gotham An AU where an altered version of No Man’s Land happened while Bruce was in his late teens/early twenties, and Batman was born in the hellish crucible of a trapped city that was left for dead and then violently retaken. Gotham may pretend to run by mainlander rules for the sake of those who would have died otherwise, but under the surface, Bruce, Jim, Leslie, Ivy and Oswald and their pack keep their own council, and look with jaundiced eyes on the mainland.

A Meditation on Railroading by eggmacguffin Batman (gen), 24k, Hurt/Comfort When he ends up ditched in Atlanta after a fight with his dad, Tim decides to do the only sensible thing: Tell no one and make the 800 mile journey back to Gotham on his own. Because the "call Batman when you're in trouble" rule only applies when he's Robin, right?

THE BATMAN (2022)

I’m a Good Pretender by shipNslash The Batman (2022) (gen), 40k, Dick Grayson-Centric Dick’s mother raised her son to be a star. Dick’s father raised his son to be an athlete. Bruce's new ward is charming (manipulative), dedicated (obsessive), and way, way too smart for either of their own good.

In This or Any Other Universe by wildsofmarch The Batman (2022) (gen), 33k, Dimension Travel There was a new vigilante in his city: a man who smiled too much and talked too loud and knew his way around a fight a little too well. Bruce wasn't bothered by his antics. Except the man also seemed to know a little too much about him. Who was this Nightwing, anyway? OR: Dick Grayson (DCU) accidentally lands himself in Battinson’s Gotham.

DC LEGENDS OF TOMORRW

Countless Roads by nirejseki Arrowverse, DC Legends of Tomorrow (Mick Rory/Leonard Snart), 231k, Medium Leonard Snart, AU-Ghosts Due to a family curse (which some call a gift), Leonard Snart has more life than he knows what to do with – and that gives him the ability to see, speak to, and even share with the various ghosts that are always surrounding him. Sure, said curse also means he’s going to die sooner rather than later, just like his mother, but in the meantime Len has no intention of letting superheroes, time travelers, a surprisingly charming pyromaniac, and a lot of ghosts get in the way of him having a nice, successful career as a professional thief.

Straight On Till Morning by nirejeski Arrowverse, DC Legends of Tomorrow (Sara Lance/Mick Rory/Leonard Snart), 17k, Time Pirates Left alone in the Refuge, Mick and Sara decide they're going to be proactive about their fate. They end up becoming time pirates. Because of course they do.

THE WITCHER

A Beginners Guide to Exploiting the Kaedweni Tax Code For Fun and Profit by Heronfem The Witcher (Aiden/Lambert), 190k, WIP, AU-Modern Setting, AU-College/University Aiden Kett and Lambert Wilkson accidentally get married, and this is honestly probably the least of their problems.

By the Broken Lock That Freed Me by inexplicifics The Witcher, (muti), 46k, AU-Daemons, Accidental Warlord Series Aiden takes a contract on the Duke of Velen. He's not expecting the most interesting part of the whole affair to be meeting the duke's betrothed. His daemon thinks they should keep her. Aiden's not sure how that will work, given that he's already got a Wolf and doesn't know how Lambert and his daemon might feel about adding someone else to their little pack, but it's awfully tempting. And Cats aren't very good at resisting temptation.

Intent by tnico The Witcher (Aiden/Lambert), 18k, Non-Traditional A/B/O, 5+1 "You think I don't know what you're after?" Lambert accuses. "Well, I'd certainly hope you do, by this point in the evening," Aiden (so he says) agrees in a convincingly genial tone. It'd probably be enough to fool someone else on the matter of genuine interest.

SPIDERVERSE

gonna crack a rib (when i get home) by eneliii Spiderverse (gen), 40k, Cannon Divergence Miles Morales, recently landed in Earth 42, has had enough of everyone’s shit and he’s going to save his dad or so help him he’ll lose his mind. Miles Morales 42, just wants to know what the /hell/ is up with his doppelgänger.

MCU

The Hero's Journey; or: What Jasper Sitwell Did Last Summer by pagination MCU, Welcome to Night Vale (multi), 23k, Crossover The thing is, when an agent reaches clearance level five, it’s because they’re valuable, capable of something an exponentially diminishing few can offer in the ranks of SHIELD. Clint Barton, his personal issues notwithstanding, is unstoppable behind a scope. Jim Woo is an analyst and extractor par excellence. Melinda May has infiltrated half the presidential offices of Asia, and Phil Coulson has an instinct for the unusual that could be the basis of an entire TV show. Jasper’s less certain what he brings to the party.

If I Knew You Were Coming I'd've Baked a Cake by OddityBoddity MCU, Hawkeye (gen), 27k, Baking They’re the broken ones. That’s what Clint figures the rest think about him and Barnes. Clint with his eardrums trashed, Barnes with a regiment’s worth of trauma and a psychotic cybernetic arm, put in the same room and told to make nice while the others get to go on missions and do important things and save the world. Well they're not broken. So of course they got bored and tired of being sidelined and decided to entertain themselves. And of course they ended up wanted, running through the streets of Paris with bananas down their pants and gendarmes in pursuit. Of course they did.

hello i absolutely do! i'm going to try to give a good scattering of different fics and hope one of these is new to you/what you're looking for.

for "tim joins the bat family early" these are some of my favorites:

5 Times Tim Spends the Night at Wayne Manor + 1 Time He Comes Home by motleyfam. this fic is inspired by Latchkey by goldkirk and birds fly in every direction by distracted_dragon, and all three are really excellent fics and great entries into this particular tag. all three of these fics are ones i turn to when i want prime hurt/comfort tim pangs with plenty of family fluff and shenanigans.

Brother Wanted by Vamillepudding. i read this one early on in fandom and i still laugh when i think about it. premise is that jason mistakenly answers tim's advert for a brother and ends up with tim paying him to be his brother. it's full of a very precocious and lonely tim trying his hardest to keep jason around, while jason is desperately trying to figure out how to get this kid adopted before he runs out of money. truly a delightful fic.

Like a Hinge, Like a Wing by Ultrageekatlarge. cw for child abuse and peril, so mind the tags but imo this is a work of art. genuinely one of the best paced and well-written fics out there. i suppose it's technically not tim joining the family early but rather an AU where jason never died, so tim never had the chance to replace him; instead he finds himself under the care of a horrible uncle after his parents die, and in desperation, he turns to the only person who can help: batman.

the Surveillance series by smilebackwards. cheating again bc technically this is just an AU where jason didn't die and tim is a civilian, so it's got the flavor of a different joining-the-family dynamic, plus added timkon delightfulness. this is my go-to for highly competent and extremely lonely tim drake content.

as for ghostbat, it's an extremely small tag, but it's got some excellent fics:

Miscommunication by OkayAristotle. pretty sure this is the first fic in the ghostbat tag, and somehow it got them prefect right from the start. the petty banter and ease with which they interact is phenomenal.

break me shake me devastate me by pendulum_north. some great angst with a small helping of comfort! as well as just a good overall look at the more tragic side to ghostbat.

i used to waste my time dreaming of being alive (now i only waste it dreaming of you) by nygmamale. bed-sharing! pining! banter! angst! there's something about how they both go out of their way to spite the other in this fic that really gets me.

The First Warm Thing by Noknowname. absolutely aching ghostbat domesticity and old men being gross and in love.

and i'll throw in a few of my other favorite random DC fics just for the heck of it:

A Meditation on Railroading by eggmacguffin. this remains one of my all-time favorite fics. tim gets stranded and chooses to freight-hop his way back to gotham, and guess who ends up on the same train? "baby wipes jason" is still spoken with reverent and hushed tones in my groupchat regularly.

Stargazer by lemonadegarden. my favorite comfort reread jason fic. jason breaks his leg and gets stuck at the manor while recuperating. honestly it's rare to find a fic that really lets jason feel as young as he is. i think he's 19 in this fic and he feels so very lost and young and hurt in a way that really heals me.

Overcoming Our Antecedents by Batbirdies. jason gets temporarily de-aged, and bruce has feelings about it. one of my cornerstone jason and bruce fics, mostly bc it contextualizes bruce and jason's relationship pre-jason's death in a way a feel many fics don't bother with. it's really really heartwarming.

The Jingle Jangle Morning by audreycritter. robin-era dick goes on a field trip and bruce has emotions. i think about this fic all the time tbh. it really sells bruce as a young, committed, and sweet father who really just wants to make sure dick is okay.

Tap Out by coyote_nebula. jason gets poisoned. oopsie. this whole series is excellent but i love this one for the way it builds up jason as a brother and a son, and the flashbacks to jason's early days after he was adopted by bruce. i truly wish there were more fics about newly adopted jason but what this fic offers scratches that itch for me.

buy back the secrets by sundiscus. in case you haven't heard this is the Timkon Fic of All Time. a 5+1 of times kon saved tim drake that has everything. identity shenanigans! tim and bruce pangs! kon and clark pangs! tim being extremely competent and extremely lonely! kon being extremely lonely and also pretty competent. this is technically a wip so i hope you'll forgive me for reccing it but it's really great and also totally worth it bc fer is absolutely 100% going to deliver and it's just. very good.

Batman Fic Recs Feat. Jason Todd’s Return

All my favorite fics about Jason’s return to the family. Gen, and mostly hurt/comfort.

Red Hood by envysparkler

“Gotham doesn’t relinquish her soldiers, no matter how far they’ve fallen from the nest.”

In my opinion, this is THE quintessential Red Hood debut fic. It’s got this one trope I love: regular civilians take a chance and protect their protector (it happens a lot with Spider-Man and its really great to see crime alley thanking Jason in the same way).

“Jason Todd returns to Gotham with a bang. In between setting up a criminal empire, dealing with national conspiracies, and the Joker, he re-learns how to be a person.

When the Bats learn of a new face in Gotham's underground, they get interested. Some of them get friendly. His plan becomes... complicated.”

I love when Red Hood becomes close to the bats without revealing his identity… idk something about how he BELONGS with them even though he’s changed…

“BEFORE:

Jason likes Tim. Or, he thinks he does. Tim has spent most of the week since he moved in locked up in his room, only coming out for meal times and sometimes to use the big TV in the media room, but the few words Jason has managed to extract from Tim show a bright kid who can clearly easily keep up with the best of ‘em, despite his young age. So he’s pretty sure he likes Tim, or at least will, with time.

AFTER:

Tim knows there’s something going on, and the worst part is that Batman isn’t even trying to pretend there isn’t something going on.

Stay out of it, he’d told him. Like something as big as a new player in town is something that Robin could stay out of. That Tim could stay out of.”

So so SO good. The story focuses on Jason and Tim and how they both join (or return, in Jason’s case) to the family. Both of them are characterized perfectly.

ghost story by envysparkler

“Jason Todd dies in Ethiopia. Well. Kind of.”

After Jason dies, he’s forced to watch his family grieve as a ghost. This gives him a new perspective when he returns to Gotham (which changes everything). I LOVE this fic. It’s suspenseful and emotional, AND there’s found family.

Twists And Turns Will Take You Home by Sun_Moon_Stars_Jedi

“Bruce Wayne is used to getting kidnapped. He's used to Gotham's villains hating him.

So why does this new crime lord come to his aid when he can't defend himself?”

Short and sweet. A little identity reveal fic because Jason Todd + identity reveal is my favorite combination of things. The fact that it’s told from Bruce’s perspective and you can see his slow realization… perfect!

miss me? by envysparkler

“Jason’s plan to observe his family’s reactions to his resurrection…does not go as intended.”

Basically, Tim, Dick, and Bruce assume Jason is a hallucination because they’re all so fucked in the head that them hallucinating him makes more sense than like. Magic or something. Very good! I love it when characters are fucked up and sad.

Late Night Encounters by paperxcrowns

“Not long after Jason comes back to Gotham and asserts himself as the Red Hood, Tim meets Jason in a diner late at night and by some miracle he doesn't recognize him. After another chance meeting where Jason still doesn't make the connection between him and Robin, Tim decides that this might just his chance to get to know Jason Todd.”

Pretty much exactly what it says in the description. Red Hood hates Robin, but he befriends the sad teenager named Tim. The secret identity thing causes issues which cause explosive emotions and slight agony for the characters!

best laid plans by Valkirin

“Tim Drake knows that Batman needs a Robin. When Bruce and Dick aren't interested in what he has to say, Tim makes his way to the cemetery to say a few words to the boy he's trying to replace.

Tim has the chance to say far more than he expected when Jason digs himself out of his grave that night. Tim does his best to get Jason home to Bruce. The League of Assassins finds them first.”

This one’s more about both Jason and Tim “coming home” but I’m going to count it because I love this fic. In the end, they’re all together which is all I can ask for.

“‘Oh, are you guys talking about Jason?’ said a familiar mechanized voice from across the rooftop, and the Bats spun around to spot the Red Hood casually leaning against the rooftop access door. ‘I miss that kid, he was a riot. Hope he’s doing alright.’

There was a moment of silence as the entire group stared at Red Hood, processing his words, and then Red Robin blurted, ‘Wait, you know Jason?’

‘Sure,’ Red Hood responded breezily, amusement written in the lines of his posture. ‘We got pushed into the Pit at the same time. He went a little crazy and fell off a cliff, but shit could only go up from there, am I right?’”

Basically Jason (as Red Hood) pretends to be his own friend and casually makes the batfam lose their minds. Very funny!

Aftermath by ivy_and_ivory

“Now: Batman is in Paris, pulled there by a case that extends beyond Gotham’s borders, when circumstances lead him to a badly injured Red Hood – who might hold the key to Batman’s investigation.

Then: The Red Hood storms into Gotham, begins to stake his claim on the criminal underground, then abruptly disappears – but only after he breaks into Arkham Asylum and leaves the Joker dead in his own cell.”

You have to have an ao3 account to read this fic (sorry) but if anyone wants to know how to make one I can help! This is a really great case fic. Batman doesn’t know who the Red Hood is, but their relationship is complicated from the start because he was able to do what Batman never could: kill the Joker.

But all of that wouldn't be so bad if his home didn't feel so empty in the absence of one of his children. Jason, refuses to talk to him or even answer his calls and Bruce can't figure out why or what he did wrong, not after they had mended their fences before his disappearance.

Meanwhile,

Catherine struggles to hold it together for her and Jason as life falls apart around them. When all she has to give is love she does her best to give it all.”

I really love this fic because it shows vignettes of Jason’s life with his mom without shitting on her as a character. Also, it’s a bit different from the other fics here because it takes place after Bruce comes back from the timestream instead of at the beginning of Jason’s stint as Red Hood.

when my cage is by the window (I can see the sun) by mikkal

“When he was seven, Damian finally escaped the League of Assassins - but not without his brother sacrificing himself to give him time. Now, six years later, he's Robin and Tim's been captured by Ra's in his latest plot. The family goes to Nanda Parbat to rescue him only to run into a revelation that might just break them.”

This fic is INSANELY well written. The small snippets of Jason and Damian’s time together are beautiful. It doesn’t have a happy ending necessarily, but you could probably interpret it as a happy ending!

robin’s roast by envysparkler

“There’s a new coffee shop in Crime Alley. It’s called the Red Hood.”

Jason gets to establish himself in Gotham as the owner of a new coffee shop instead of as a crime lord. This ends up being more effective in completing some of his goals than being the Red Hood would have been.

“Jason only came back to confront Batman and kill the Joker. His job is done.”

Be sure to mind the trigger warnings in the tags. This fic is very different from a lot of the ones on this list, but it’s VERY good.

“The first time Jason held Damian in his arms, the green abated and he knew he had never loved anyone else so fiercely before.

The thing about love is that it is so rarely enough.”

Jason raising Damian!!!! The family meeting Damian and not knowing that Jason raised him!!! Identity reveals! Aaaaaaaaa!!

Damian is strangely close-lipped about his other brother's past, but Dick is determined to find out more about the Red Hood - he could always use more little brothers, anyway!”

The batfam knows the Red Hood as a violent vigilante (and as Damian’s mysterious brother) but then they get to meet Jason!! Identity reveal and all that jazz!

the bird, the fog, the mist by bacondoughnut

“Jason Todd returns to Gotham with a foolproof plan, to kill the Joker and protect the city as the Red Hood in a way that Batman never could. But when he gets there he makes one major decision that's not a part of the plan. He goes home.

aka; The one where Jason tries to balance being the Red Hood with repairing things with his family, and maybe learns a thing or two about forgiveness and family and love along the way”

Jason comes home but he’s still the Red Hood and there’s a WONDERFUL amount of secrets being kept. I like this one because it’s the opposite from a lot of the other fics on this list (in that the family meets Jason Before they meet Red Hood)

I love this fic SO much. It made me feel so many emotions… the buildup to Jason’s reveal is amazing and the reveal itself is perfect. The last chapter is (as of right now) not posted, but that chapter is an epilogue so the story is able to stand without it! A million out of ten, would recommend.

AAAAAAAAAGH THIS FIC. This fic is SO good. There’s a ton of interactions between Jason and the family when they don’t know his ID because they assume that Red Hood’s relationship with Jason Todd isn’t “of course I know him, he’s me” but something Very Different. Angst, humor, the whole shebang.

So i am thinking about what i'd do if i could make a future Batfam AU after Bruce dies/retires. And I think my main focus would be Tim and Damian.

Firstly, Dick is still Nightwing, now the leader of JL whitch integrated Titans. Jason is Red Hood and leads a Red Hood gang in Gotham, leading it with his own rules that limit and control most of Gothams crime (not that it stops it because the city is cursed on multiple levels). Steph is either Spoiler or Batgirl, both work well for her as aliases, she works as a vigilante. Kate retired with her girlfriend and Selina is taking care of little Helena Wayne. Alfred has sadly died to Bane. Harper and Duke work as Blue Bird and Signal, the daytime heroes of Gotham (they're friends, not a couple dw). Jace Fox is the Batman for Justice League.

Now Tim, he's Gothams Batman, the detective of the city, he's grouped up with Cass, the new Batwoman and the muscle of the duo. Carrey Kelly is their Robin. They deal with the classic street level Gotham crime, they usualy team up with Steph and deal with Jasons bs.

Damian is a member of Justice Leauge Dark, focusing dark magic, ocultism and satanism. He is also Batman, with a more mystic look (black suit, green accents). His Robin is Jarro who decided to join his brother after Bruce died.

And if he still existed I'd have Lance be Red X and kinda like a Robin Hood-lile figure. Terry is still living a calm life before he stumbled into the Batfam buisness.

If i forgot somebody, please tell me and i'll give info on what i'd do with them in the AU.

I am lost in the sauce of thinking about how Bruce would react to Robin!Kon. Does he obsess over the fact that an alternate version of him lost and replaced Tim? Does he feel guilty for not taking Kon in in this version of reality? Is he paranoid about and/or intrigued by the potential of a Superboy with full Robin training?

(Knowing Bruce, it’s probably option D: all of the above, but expressed in the worst way.)

GOD okay no but delving into the bruce and kon dynamic is so... HNG. it's thorny because bruce has been written as warm and kind to kon AND an anti-meta racist asshole to kon. because of who i am as a person i tend to ignore and throw out the latter bc i want to like bruce and its really impossible to make him consistent as a character without picking and choosing stuff to throw out, but... whoof.

but with that established it's so... augh. the idea of having lost tim (who only ever became robin because he lost jason first - that's two robins, two kids, dead, one after another) absolutely would haunt him. the idea of superboy (an alternate universe superboy, no less, one he knows very little about) knowing all the bat secrets and tips and tricks... well, it's not as bad as it could be, since he does trust clark's judgment and clark trusts superboy and all, but. it's not his favorite thing.

honestly, i think main universe bruce would be so fucking awkward with robin kon, more than anything. he wouldn't know how to handle the horror of his existence + this version of kon who knows him so much better than he knows kon.

what i think is really fun, though, is robin kon's relationship with his own bruce.

tim dies. bruce spirals hard. he's in a dark pit. this is jason all over again - worse, in a way, because he never fully got over jason and now it's happening again and all the old wounds are reopening but now there's new ones on top. he is in a deep, dark pit.

and then superboy joins him there.

this is a young kon. he's still sixteen. he's never experienced loss before. his first brush with grief is his best friend being ripped away from him, and he's barely even a year old. it consumes him.

so he gravitates to the other person being wholly consumed by grief. and here's bruce, broken and grieving hard and furious with the world and himself, faced with another child who loved the child he just lost so much he can't let go. what can he do? can he bring himself to turn aside a boy who loved his boy? tim's best friend? can he really?

of course he can't.

they don't make each other better so much as they just... keep each other on a leash. bruce can't let himself go too far, get too reckless or suicidal or masochistic in punishing himself, because if he has a near-scare there's a boy waiting for him back home to cry and scream and rip into him that he can't do that, he can't, i've already lost tim you can't make me lose you too you can't do that to me you can't.

he trains kon to act as a robin. to wait, to listen, to learn. to hide his strength and his flight, to keep secrets bigger than himself. he trains kon and puts him behind robin's mask - another child in that costume, wearing new colors this time - and hopes he's not making a mistake.

but hey. at least this kid is more... crowbar/explosion/bullet-proof?

As like all my other hcs I wrote this on my phone (actually wrote this while at work but let’s not this about that too hard). I wanted to go into more detail, but thought that’ll make it confusing and just choose to do it like this.

This is just something I think about when overwhelmed bc it’s helps distract me. I mostly think about it from a jondami perspective bc why not.

I might do more about this, if 5 ppl like this. Sorry if this doesn’t make sense :(

Reverse Batfam hc

Duke was the first adopted after his parents died from the joker

he’s still “the signal” but that’s a little later”

Damian joins in after, he’s the oldest of the Wayne kids

Duke looked up to Damian and was a little self conscious of his place in the family

he ended up getting g shot by joker and became oracle (he still calls himself the signal)

Jon is 3 years older then Damian

they met the same way with Damian trying to kidnap him to fight

they didn’t really say they were friends but they were friends

they form the teen titans when Damian was 14

the members are raven and beast boy ofc, then Colin and jon, and maps….kathy, maya, djinn II and Conner queen joining later

Jon is the oldest

Jon started dating Jay (Damian had a crush on Jon)

they broke up later and Damian was in a secret relationship with Colin (not really secret they just never out right said it)

Jon left the team after he graduated high school wanting to focus more on school

(the team kinda disbanded a little after with Kathy taking over for a bit)

Damian gave up being Robin after getting in a fight with Bruce

Joined a cult fight ring where he met back with Conner and met flatline

him and Colin also broke up (it was mutual with just a bit of awkwardness)

Tim became Robin after finding out Batman’s identity and the little shit was so desperate he put his family in danger just to get Batman’s attention (fucking dumbass)

Damian comes back to Gotham with a new Robin and he goes to Jon bc Jon was his comfort

they formed the titans again (with the added few)

Kon is born and Jon learns to be a big brother

He also makes it a good idea to introduce kon and Tim

Damian does not like Tim

he regrets it after Tim is kidnapped by the joker and is tortured to becoming joker Jr and ended up falling to his death

anyways he dies and Damian regrets not being there to at least help guide him

Bruce is destroyed, he was just starting to like Tim and his company only for that to happen to him (he didn’t really accept Tim bc of how he put himself in danger and only took tim in bc his parent were in hiding in another country) (imagine the phone call they got)

Kon also dies around this time

Jon and Damian pull apart from the team and eachother

Jon forced to become Superman after his father dies from doomsday

Damian “retiring” from heroing and going back to the legue of assassins

(he’s actually to keep an eye on his grandfather)

Bruce meets Jason and takes him in

he doesn’t tell Jason about Batman but Jason is a smart kid so he finds out eventually

Bruce is more protective over Jason so he doesn’t make him Robin right away

Damian comes back right on time when Bruce starts training Jason, he heckles Bruce a bit but starts train Jason as well so whatever happened to Tim never happens with him

Jason and Damian become a bit more closer

Stephanie joins the family as batgirl

She was friends with Tim when he was still alive

she met Batman the same way in the comics

Cassandra was adopted before Tim and was batgirl for a while until she was shot in the leg (she’s fine just was benched for a while)

Damian and Taven start dating

and Raven ends up pregnant (more on that later)

Damian and her broke up before find out tho and that’s when him and Jon were getting closer

Tim comes back to life bc ra’s Al Goul (?) wanted to use his body as a vessel and even trained him

Tim lost his memory after coming back to life, but gain it slowly through time

Fully comes back when kon comes back to life and rushes over to get Tim out before Tim’s soul can be switched

then ended up blowing up the base while escaping

They join a life of crime with Tim going through his mad scientist/villain arc

him and Jon got a Bonnie and Clyde thing going on

Also tried to kill Jason after coming back to Gotham bc he felt like Jason didn’t deserve to be Robin

Speaking of Gotham, he try’s to come back looking for his parent, only to find out they were killed by the riddler (of all ppl) and that kicked off his villain arc

Jon finds out about Kon being alive and when he asked kon why he’s doing the thing he’s doing, Kon’s just like “I rather be with Tim then the person who left me to die”

it kills Jon bc he tried everything he could to protect Kon that day but got there too late

it’s worse for jon bc he’s still grieving over the lost of Damian, and running tge titans again with the addition of Bart, kara, Cassie, and cissie

man’s is stresssd to no end

Back to Damian, he’s not actually dead, he got sent to the underworld by his grandfather after he failed the soul switch, so Ra’s went back to his og choice of a vessel.

Raven ends up having her baby, (it’s a girl), they name her Lilith bc I’m so original

She look like raven with Damian’s hair and eyes (what baby is 75% demon and the rest human)

Damian comes back to the earth (4years older, even tho only a year has passed since he’s “died”)

the catch up is insane

him and Jon start dating and they co parent with raven and bb to raise Lilith

Tim has also calmed down after Damian smacks him to his senses

he’s still a little shit and now helps the batfam with any tech things

imagine Jason but more off his rockers then homicidal

Dick is the last to join, and he’s just a ball of sunshine

Damian gains an attachment to him (mostly bc he’s only 3-4 years older then his daughter)

did I mention Damian is such a good dad bc he’s such a good dad

Dick and Lilith are spoiled by the whole family even Tim

the rouges would think more the twice then to mess with them (they do not want to get on Tim’s bad side)

Dick is also start to create his own team of young justice with Wally, Roy, Lilith, Donna, and Garth

also Jon and Damian are engaged

Batfam Mafia AU

Not that the fam themselves (most of them) are in the Mafia tho, I just don't have a better name.

@hallowsden helped me with this a while ago but this is the expanded version.

Essentially, you've got bronze age Joker as a Mafia boss who has a penchant for cruel jokes and unusual punishment but he's a lot more moral in this than he has been in the past, partially that he doesn't target children anymore.

Harley used to work at the local prison, essentially her job was figuring out if the inmates got worse while there or were sent there wrongly. People didn't like how good she was doing with her job (plus that's where she met Joker, tho she was hiding there relationship) so she got sent to work at Arkham in hopes it would break her or something (it slightly did but she's not as unhinged as a Jokered Harley)

Joker is like a step-dad to the batkids and Pam is like a step-mom in the same dad way, but the kids more or less fight over who the best mom-mom is.

Jason still died because a rival of Joker's found out he was working with the vigilantes and took it into their own hands to remedy that and tried to pin it on Joker, not realizing he was technically family with them.

Anyway, Talia gets back from a trip, finds out, and takes Jason's corpse to LoA. Jason ends up considering her 'best mom'. Then Harley becomes 'Second Mom' because he decides to take Joker's old name and try and weasel his way to working under his step-dad (Joker finds out almost immediately)

Anyway, besides Jason, here's what Mom(s) I think the kids would gravitate towards the most (I consider Ivy a mom-adjacent dad/wine aunt combo because of her vibes)

Dick is the kid who thinks Selina is Best Mom. He'll sometimes join her heists when he wants to destress, especially since most of her heists are only harming the rich idiots and museums, the latter of which gets sent to their home countries. He spends all much time with her a lot of people think she's his actual mom (not that Egyptian and Romani are the same but most people can't really tell the difference plus Bruce is pale as fuck)

Cass has too many bad memories and trauma from assassin days to really see Talia as a mom figure but she does call her aunt from time to time (unless Talia spent time overtaking some of Cass' training and used that time to make things better where she could).

Tim blew up the LoA, I'm not sure how fond he'd be of Talia unless she helped him do so but still. Plus, imagine if he just went 'Sike I'm going with Joker and Harley' either when Bruce tried to adopt him, or maybe willingly becoming Joker Jr. when Damien took over as Robin (Damien was still raised in the LoA but Talia did better this time with him). I feel like he'd still have somewhat of a Hero getup tho for outside of Gotham since Joker is considered a villain, so he takes on 'Red' after his step-dad and his big brother, and 'Robin' from his old role.

Steph I'm not sure but I feel like she'd get along with Harley. Be funny if she and Tim would be all 'Jokerina and Junior' creepy twin shenanigans, but she'd still be Spoiler as well, kinda depends on how much she wants to annoy Bruce at the time. Or maybe she goes for a Harley-look-alike - 'Quinnie and Junior'?

Duke is a kitty kat kid most of the time. He's a street fighter, as much or more than Jason, but while Jason later got trained by Bruce then Talia, Duke got his training from Bruce and Selina.

Damien, as mentioned before, was raised by Talia, but he also grew up with Jason for a bit, and maybe Tim babysat him as well from time to time when he was at the LoA (they have a better relationship than Canon). Not much changes but he isn't at murder happy.

In terms of non-platonic relationships, you have...

Brutalina, BatJokes, Jarley, and Harlivy

Also, depending on how you want to drag things, Ras is either redeemable or he's that grandpa you're not a fan of who keeps inserting himself into family functions and it's not like you can kill him right? Or both, both is good. 😂

That whole thread really highlight how lonely Jason's Robin run was. Honestly it makes me sad how he didn't have many friends back then compare to others. He had Eddie but even then dc forget about them.

i don't really agree with lots of points in this thread, mainly because of tim exceptionalism (or the main character complex, whatever you want to call it) + it assumes that things that happened pretty much only because of jason's death would still occur.

having said so, i do agree that jason's robin run was (in a way) incredibly lonely!

now, personally i don't think that jason noticed it much, but that's part of the problem. i have touched upon it briefly in my other posts about vigilante/civilian identity (look: here, for example), and i think it's worth to make a quick comparison of pre-crisis vs post-crisis jay.

so, tldr, pre-crisis jason is shown to have a whole life at school, he has friends and even a romantic interest. post-crisis jason has none of that. we see him working for an extra credit at school, but if i recall it right (might have been a pre-crisis story retroactively included in canon though) the only time we actually see him *in* school is when he thinks about how he would like to join the theatre but doesn’t have time for that because of robin responsibilities. we don’t see him having any social life outside of robin, but also as a member of the community he doesn’t have anyone close his age. his cameo in titans is very dear to me, and you know, as a person with siblings i will tell you, you can absolutely be friends with your older brother’s friends, but we don’t ever see him developing a lasting bond with any of them (which is also because he died quite soon after that. i’m not saying that donna, for example, didn’t care about him, but i don’t think they had a chance to grow very close).

there's eddie, sure, but even that relationship is that of penpals, and by the time jason comes back from the dead, eddie is completely retconned, so it's safe to assume that in the current continuity they have never known each other at all.

i'm not going to comment on dc trying to sell the concept of roy and jay being childhood friends in n52.

so i’m thinking, you can make an argument about how jason knows little besides vigilantism, but i believe there’s an additional layer to how even his “nightlife” (debatable term btw, we see robin jay operating in daylight along with batman all the time but i guess that was a whole another era) focuses pretty much on bruce and no one else. he really doesn’t know much beyond batman and robin.

and it obviously wasn't really the writers' intention, i bet it's mostly the result of the fact that they weren't really interested in exploring his character much, but jay's world is so very narrow and centres around bruce. and i can see how bruce wouldn't really see any problem in it at first, because (while it's not really canon, as there's a time skip and we don't even get to see how he settles into the manor, nor much of his training period) it is safe to assume that it took some time for jay to gain bruce's trust and to get used to a role of a child (since he was used to fending for himself/presumably being briefly a caretaker for his mother before). so when the kid finally learns that he can depend on bruce and actively seeks him out, that's great. it took so much to coax him into allowing to be cared for, now the issue is solved. (wrong.)

i think it really puts post-resurrection jay's mentality in perspective (even if winick did not intend it this way; he clearly had no interest in jay's 80s characterisation). of course jason's anger, disappointment, and feelings of betrayal focus on bruce; bruce was everything he had. at this stage, he doesn't know much beside him, and being robin.

and i don't think that jason then was quite aware that he was lonely. he had his dad, which was the most important thing for him for a while, he had alfred. dick might not have been home much, but their interactions we got to see were meaningful, and flashbacks (such as the famous ski trip) suggest that they did spend more time together. babs was around. he probably made so many brief connections with gothamites in his time as robin too.

it all becomes a problem when jason grows. when he can't see a line between being a robin and a son, and looks for another parental figure, and he doesn't have anyone to talk to about it. everyone he has a lasting relationship with is part of the family that he worries he doesn't belong to, so he just resolves to find someone new to depend on.

it becomes a problem when he digs himself out of grave, and later comes back to gotham, and there's such a limited number of people he can (or could, if he wanted) turn to.

i also believe that even if the plot of 'a death in the family' never occured, the fact that he went from a hyper-independent parentified child to someone who spends most of his time with his dad or alone (and i don't think he minded alone time all that much at first) would backfire otherwise. i'm joking, but at this point there probably would be some separation anxiety, on both sides.

i just wish i could grip jay with bbq tongs and put him in east gotham to allow him to stay in touch with his community. of course he probably was around there as robin a lot, but as a civilian? i doubt it.

You know what’s a super-interesting thought I just had?

(I mean, unless its not super-interesting thought at all and is actually quite mundane, in which case, lol, can’t believe you suckers fell for that. Wow. How embarrassing.)

But no, I’m just kidding, its actually super-interesting, I might be a genius, waiting on confirmation. So the thing is, there’s one really specific trope that I’ve probably seen used in fic for pretty much every fandom I’ve ever been in.....but that I’ve never seen used in a Dick Grayson fic.

The trope of which I speak is ye olde time travel fix-it trope. Wherein the main character wakes up in their ten or fifteen years younger body or whatever, and like, uses foreknowledge to avert personal tragedies or losses of loved ones.

Now first off, I think there’s something intriguing about the relative lack of this trope in a fandom where things like time travel are literally canon and things the characters are aware of being like ‘so this is a thing that happens, and if my friend/relative woke me up one day and said hey you’re not gonna believe this but I actually have all the memories of me from fifteen years in the future, I would be like no for sure, I totally believe you dude, that happens all the time.’

That right there is already a twist on the usual time-travel fix-it stories, which tend to take place in fandoms where that ISN’T the norm and so the protag is like I must make with the hush-hush and keep the vault of my secret knowledge zipped up tight lest someone book me a nice staycation at the nearest fandom-specific equivalent of Arkham.

But then I ALSO started thinking hmmm, were one TO apply this trope to Dick Grayson in particular, like.....what point in his past would you even PICK as the point in time he returns to, hoping to use his foreknowledge to make play out differently?

Like....would you go all the way back to his parents being killed, and make them check the ropes again? How about before Bruce fired him from being Robin and the estrangement that led to between them? Or before Jason dies? Or maybe before Brother Blood brainwashed Dick that first time, or before Terra betrayed the team, or before Mirage, or before Joey got possessed and the events of Titans Hunt......how about before Blockbuster, or before Donna and Lilith died in Graduation Day or when Bruce was thought dead in Final Crisis, or when Damian was killed by Heretic or before the events of Forever Evil?

THERE’S TOO MANY FIX-IT POINTS HOW DO YOU EVEN PICK?!?!?

But THEN I got to thinking, well.....one of the other things particular to Dick Grayson’s tragedies is how often they’re inextricably tied to later things he doesn’t view as tragic or something he regrets or wants to avert. So its like.....how CAN he go back and avert his parents’ deaths, without giving up the family he later goes on to build with Bruce and all his siblings? If he travels back and repairs his fractured bond with Bruce before being fired as Robin, is it going to be a given that Bruce still meets Jason or feels compelled to take him in? If Jason never dies, does Tim ever join the family? Does Joey ever even join the Titans if Terra never betrays them? Without that time Bruce is thought lost and dead, do Dick and Damian ever form the bond they have in canon? Etc, etc.

So that narrowed it down considerably for me, and I ended up with just a couple key points where I’m like, okay, I could see Dick still ending up back at this time and thinking yeah there are things I want to change and feel safe about changing without undoing other key parts of my life.

1) Blockbuster - This era is I think one of the biggest tragedies of Dick’s life, and because of how....scattered the aftermath and fallout of it was, and the in-story examinations of it, it remains fairly disconnected from the rest of Dick’s life and thus something that he can alter to fairly sizable degree without like.....altering the overall shape of his life after that point in ways he would be averse to. The lives Blockbuster took when blowing up his apartment building, Tarantula, the destruction of Bludhaven as a whole.....all of these are things that Dick, armed with foreknowledge and also strengthened by his growth and development in years long after all this, could tackle and change all on his own.

And one of the key things about this for me, and the appeal of this flux-point as an area of focus.....is that it would be an opportunity for Dick to change things for the better for HIMSELF. Where the focus would be on yeah, saving all those other lives, but just as much like...saving himself, averting a tragic period of his life for his OWN sake rather than just....because of how it’ll change or improve the lives of friends or loved ones of his. Self-sacrifice is kinda built into so many of his stories and dynamics, that its just like.....very appealing to not deny that this is the case, but rather just hone in on a time and place where he gets to put himself first and be like, I am changing things, I am making things better for ME, because *I* will benefit from this and I deserve to.

I think that’s a neat premise for him, personally. You do you, boo. Get that healing.

2) The Last Laugh - Okay, because I am me and I can’t just like, NOT be obsessed with this story and the implications for Bruce, Dick and Jason, ugh, how OOC would THAT be, like excuse me but I am no Scott Lobdell, I choose to stick with established characterization THANK YOU, next.....

Soooooo, I also got to thinking, what if future Dick were to wake up the morning of Last Laugh’s events and be like, wait why am I here back on THIS day and then also with his knowledge of how things like Jason’s return played out and how much the Joker being alive played into that.....what if he’s like.....y’know what, now that I actually KNOW that whatever else happened if I killed the Joker, at least one person would actually be really fucking beneficially impacted, with potentially large ripples on the rest of the family (like Jason never going full crime lord or attacking Tim in Titans Tower if he were less inclined to avoid his family before all that)....and of course add to that all his awareness of later shit the Joker definitely very much did do and that are not hypotheticals for him (bonus points if this is a Rebirth/pre-Flashpoint continuity mashup and thus Duke’s in the mix here too and Dick’s like, hmmm, one dead Joker means two less Joker-ized Duke parents).....

And so the end result is Dick is like, hmmm yeah, I think actually I’m just gonna kill the Joker again, but like, with intent this time. And Just Say No to Bruce making with the CPR like this is a D.A.R.E. infomercial or something. Yeah, that’s the ticket.

(Because I’ve always maintained that Dick never actually regretted killing the Joker per se, what he regretted was that in losing control and just reacting to the Joker’s taunts and going full pell-mell with the fists of fury, like, he gave the Joker exactly what he wanted and let him ‘win.’ But what kind of quandary is afoot when you have Dick be like....actually, I’m NOT sad about it and I DON’T want Bruce to ‘fix’ this since it doesn’t actually fix what it breaks between them in the first place, and they didn’t ever get past it so much as they just never even talked about it again, so IS it really that much worse if you have Bruce be like GASP, Dick no! You can’t just be OKAY with killing the Joker! and Dick be like GASP, Dick yes! I can, I will, I AM okay with killing the Joker on account of duh, its the JOKER.

And thus you set the stage for all kinds of DIFFERENT fallout than the first time around, Dick deadset on believing he made the right choice, and Bruce not able to reconcile WHY, and then even if and when Jason DOES return in a much, hmm...’softer’ way than in canon and like, never makes with the attempted fratricide or patricide or any kind of -cide, really, and Dick - who let’s be real, can count as one of his more obnoxious qualities his tendency to be a V. Smug Bitch when he’s feeling particularly ‘I told you so’ about stuff - is like Hah! I told you so! and feels all vindicated and validated about his particular choice of....choices, back then, and Bruce would be like What are you talking about you told me NOTHING, and Dick’s like oh right, I did do that. Vault of secrets thing. Hmm. Well if you’d just TRUST ME that I know what I’m doing which you never do.....

And blah blah blah you get it.

But yeah. That’s my interesting thought. Please feel free to sound off with past-points you’d pick for Dick to return to and try and change things, and perhaps why.

Or, y’know. Don’t. That’s cool too. The power is yours.

(Reverse robins)

Chapter 8

"And what are you doing here?" Damian demanded.

"Chasing the Red Hood, same as you" Jason answered. Both of them were standing on the roof of an empty warehouse in their costumes.

"This is no place for Kids Robin" Damian scolded the younger boy.

"I'm not a kid!" Jason snapped standing on his toes to look taller.

"I don't trust you to go home by yourself and I don't have time to take you home" Damian sighed 'ugh I swear he acts just like Tim' "Fine stay close to me"

"Okay grumpy bird" Jason nodded. Damian mentally cursed Wally for the stupid nickname.

"Let's go" he leaped through the window. A couple of thugs were lying on the ground dead. "He's definitely been here"

"Way to go Nightwing" Red Hood stepped out of the shadows "Figure that one out all by yourself?"

"You might as well surrender" he matched Damian blow for blow. It was like he knew exactly what Damian was going to do before he even did it 'Why isn't he using his gun'

"Getting a little slow aren't you Wayne?" Damian's eyes widened behind his mask 'Who is this guy?' "You have no idea who you're messing with"

"You think you're some kind of genius?" Damian growled.

"Actually yes" he smirked. Even with the helmet on Damian could tell he was smirking. Suddenly lights started flashing outside "That's my cue" Red Hood knocked Damian down and climbed up to the roof. "A little higher than I thought" he looked down below.

"Give up, you have nowhere to go" Damian smirked as he backed the Red Hood to the edge of the roof.

"How about no" He leaped onto a poorly built platform 'This should be strong enough to hold my weight, hopefully, they'll be too worried about this falling to climb on it'

"Robin!" Damian called after Jason as he jumped on the wobbly platform. A sudden shake caused Jason to slip barely holding on to the edge of the platform.

"Come here you little brat" Red Hood reached for Jason pulling the kid up and tossing him onto the roof of the next build.

"Hold on Robin I'm coming" Red Hood looked over to see Damian leaping onto the platform 'you got to be kidding me'

"You idiot!" The platform became shaky. Red started to jump to the next building until Damian's cape caught his eye 'This dummy is going to fall down with the platform' Instead of leaping to the next building he turned to push Damian onto the second platform.

"You-" Whatever Damian was about to say was drowned out by the crash.

"Ugh," Red Hood tried to push himself up off the ground until he realized he was pinned under a heavy wooden beam 'Way to go red, always got to be the hero don't you' he mentally cursed himself as Damian ran over to him. Red Hood tried to hit him but Damian grabbed his hand.

"I'm trying to help you!" Damian snapped pulling the beam off of him 'What am I doing he's a killer' As soon as he was free Red Hood darted off.

"You let him get away" Jason complained. Damian stared at the door 'Who was that guy and why would he save me?'

Extended Ending

"I should have shot him in the leg, to begin with," Red Hood groaned pulling off his helmet.

"Hey, Timmy" Tim turned to see Roy standing in the doorway "I thought that was you" he smirked.

"I'm not even sure who I am I'm anymore" Tim flopped down in his chair.

"You've changed a lot" Roy smiled "I can't imagine the old Tim carrying around guns"

"That Tim died long ago" Tim sighed fixing the crack in his helmet.

"Got to say the new you is pretty cool" Roy smiled "I'm kinda into the anti-hero game myself, want to join forces?" Roy reached out his hand.

"Sure why not" Tim smiled shaking his hand"A couple of outlaws working together"

DC, I’m begging you:

- Give us a Batfam animated series that follows them all in their day and night lives. Can it be ‘gritty’ or whatever words you like to use to describe those New Jersey bat/bird furries while fighting crime.

- But also just give us Dick driving Damian to school and Jason insisting he tags along just to embarrass the kid at drop off/pick up.

-Give us Tim with the biggest fucking bags under his eyes deadpanning while Dick teaches Damian how to hang from the chandelier while Alfred is hitting them with a fucking feather duster trying to get them down.

-Give me Jason and Cass talking about classic lit completely unfazed while Damian chases Tim around the manor with his katanas.

-Give me Steph threatening to eat Batcow when Damian makes fun of her.

-Give me Bruce getting scolded by everyone when he puts his feet up on the coffee table despite it being “my own damn house.”

-Give me Alfred having the week off and Bruce goes shopping and Duke decides to tag alone because he is convinced Bruce is going to make a fool of himself after they had this exact conversation:

- Give me Babs, Steph, Kate and Cass having a girls night and all the brothers get jealous and try to sabotage it but the girls are always one step ahead and by the end of it they invite everyone in to hang with them. Dick and Jason painting each others nails the most garish colors they can find, Damian eating the cucumbers off of Tim’s eyes just to piss him off, and Babs, Steph, Cass, and Kate immediately regretting inviting them to join. Duke was invited from the get go to hang with them but declined to go patrol because “the goons are less crazy than y’all I stg.”

- Give me a halloween special where Dick enters a nightwing costume contest and comes in 2nd place because “while your costume is pretty spot on, you just don’t have nightwing’s ass.” He was fine with this until he finds out the winner was Jason and has an identity crisis over whether or not he has the best ass in the family. Jason proudly puts his little trophy on the mantle for Dick to see every time he comes to the manor.

- Give me Tim getting angry at Jason and every time Jason tries to talk to him he pretends Jason is dead again. “God, it’s like I can still hear his voice.” “Dickhead, tell Tim to stop. I’m the only Robin who can make dead jokes.” “I died too, Jay.” “Shut up, Dick. You died for like 2 minutes before Luther revived you and then lied to us about being dead.” “...” “Todd, you buffoon, I died too.” “Fuck off, demon.”

- For the love god, give me an episode where they all have to go to a gala and all the shenanigans that ensue while they’re there and Bruce just looks utterly exhausted.

- Jason Todd is still technically ‘dead’ but decides to go to the gala anyways and at one point Dick pulls him to the dance floor as a joke but the media has a fucking field day thinking Dick has this mysterious boyfriend and Bruce has to pull some press conference bullshit where they’re like “.... Dick isn’t dating that man. It would be weird considering that’s my dead son Jason.” And Jason, instead of taking any of the questions or telling the doctored story of why he isn’t dead, just adds on “Yeah, why would I date Dickface? Have you seen him? He’s a man whore, I need someone loyal. And preferably not related.”

- Give me Dick keeping a scrapbook of all the patrols him and Damian went on where there are pictures of Damian labeled things like “Robin’s first joker venom ❤️” and it’s Damian glaring under a ventilator mask or whatever looking eerily like Bruce.

- Give me a beach episode where they never actually get to the beach because this whole family, for being known for being prepared for anything and everything, apparently does not know how to pack for free time. Bruce tries to bring the shark repellant and Cass just face palms while wearing the widest brimmed sun hat known to man.

- Give Steph and Dick interrogating potential perps vis a vis this scene in B99

- Give me an episode where Bruce is on patrol being a little too rough and gruesome (even for him) and pushing everyone away and it takes the entire family to pull him off of someone who they assumed did something particularly nefarious but when they finally pull him back they see it’s a petty thief clutching a string of pearls and they all decide to bench Bruce. They all force Bruce to go home for the night and stay with him and watch a movie. Bruce puts on The Mask of Zorro and when all the kids look uneasy, he goes on to say “This is the last happy memory I had with them... ___ years ago today.” And it all comes crashing down on them why he was so adamant on the jewelry thief with the pearls today of all days.

- Honestly this is just my tl;dr way of saying “DC, let me be in the writing room for an animated series surrounding the Batfam”

anyway since jason is the first robin for Earth-T18, I can see us rescuing him from the Joker before he gets killed (cuz we knew beforehand or smthn idk) and that prompts jason to be yan for us even more. like, before that point his obsession w Bats was idealization, now its "protective sidekick yandere" obsession for him.

Oh yes, in my original idea.

Well, I first tell you, I like to make Bat suffer, and I think that if you change something, something changes accordingly. Dominoes.

In the same way, my idea was that Bat knew what would happen to Dick, but without the absolutely exact date (which was also unexpectedly advanced because , who gives orders to the circus?), the plans were screwed up, in fact, Bats did not even have the opportunity to adopt Dick, poor Bat!

So, my first idea was that Jason died and Bat KILLED the Joker because even knowing in advance what would happen, they couldn't save Jason (Joker swapped places!) who anyway would later resurrect (to strengthen the plot with Tim and the Al Ghul), and said dead, a spoiler that Bat already knew and had them on edge for months tore them apart.

And Bat, who is part paranoid, part fan, part imitating the original Bat, has cameras on their mask, records everything. So they recorded the beating of Joker. And said record was seen by Jason.

What I mean is that, effectively, whether Jason survives or not. Yes, the supreme yandereish of Bat is a fact. Because unlike Bruce, Reader will not hide their pain before and after in their lost whether or not they decide to kill the clown.

As for who knows. Alfred, implicitly. but he is the Yandere -Platonic- King. There is an understanding. You follow some rules (that is, he always knows where you are), and he doesn't bluntly ask you: how you know that?) ...for now, mainly because your "precognition" clearly puts you in control 90% of the time.

After all. If your protégé asks you for help to become a crazymen hunting machine (just when the city gets full of them), not to mention since was little they were muttering things like developing instruments like a mask specifically for kinda-a-gas that causes "fear" "laughter" or idk "an antidote to a lipstick thing that is like hypnotizing", or "we have to look for a radioactive green stone" or more normal but not "don't invest in bitcoins" one begins to suspect.

Then, yes indeed, Tim and Ra's. Two sides of the same coin. Two Bats fanboys. At first -but, like 1 week Tim-, more innocent, thought that Bats was a genius (somewhat Paranoid too).

Later, having entered the dark side, they both thought that they had some kind of meta-ability, until analyzing they realized that they didn't (unless you consider their isekainess one).

They know there is something, but they haven't come to the conclusion "they are from another world where we're fictional." Their thinking is more in line with "precognition", at most "parallel universe", once they begin to know other universes... except that they don't know another Bats.

Mari and Cass sometimes switch their suits as they have the same body type. Cass would sometimes go out in full Hellbat gear and give the appearance that Hellbat is out more often than she actually is.

So Orphan/Black Bat also sometimes uses guns.

This also helps with concealing secret identities. Maria was rescued by Hellbat from Joker’s Henchmen. (Vicki Vale was getting sus of the new Wayne and Hellbat.)

Unfortunately since Hellbat rarely comes out and she had already made all of her appearance for the month and it wasn’t a busy weekend, the public had come to the conclusion that Hellbat has a crush on the newest Wayne.

Basically everyone thought that Mari has a crush on herself. Which led to some teasing and escalated to Mari announcing that Jason had a crush on Red Hood on live TV.

It didn’t help that a video of Red Hood and Jason re-enacting Romeo and Juliet with Jason on his apartment balcony and Red Hood on the roof was posted on the internet a few days later. (Thank you, Trixx and Tim’s awesome video editing skills)

Sadly, it was taken down 24 hours later. (Tim and the others have multiple copies of it, on the cloud or hardware, hidden around in the manor and their respective safehouses in the US.)

Some people kidnapped Jason to hopefully gain leverage over the Red Hood and to their dismay and nightmares for years to come, Hellbat came instead.

One lucky and incredibly brave reporter asked why she was there instead of her brother.

Mari being a little shit, “Red Hood may be a tough and scary guy but when it comes to his feelings, my brother is a chicken.”

Pictures of Jason tackling Hellbat somehow never made it into any papers.

The criminal underworld hasn’t taken a hint and Jason has been kidnapped a few more times.

Other times Jason was kidnapped:

Robin: Red Hood made a fool of himself in front of Todd recently and he doesn’t dare to show his face.

Spoiler: He was taking too damn long checking his hair even though I told him that no one was going to see it under his helmet and he was so offended that he is currently sulking in the bathroom.

Red Robin: Red Hood can’t think straight when he is around Jason. I mean have you seen the dude.

Arsenal*during a rare visit to Gotham*: Red Hood owes me one now.

Dick finally ends it by going out as Red Hood and rescuing Jason. Gotham is happy that Redson (Red Hood x Jason) ship has finally sailed.

Kate, Babs, Cass, Steph and Mari were out on Mari’s first girls’ night since her move to the manor.

This is set a little after she came back from Paris with Jason.

They watched rom-com movies, did hair and nails, gossip about the superhero community and bitch and vent to each other.

Marinette off-handedly mentioned the crazy shits she had done during her stint as Ladybug. It started with asking about the T-rex in the Batcave and she mentions jumping into the mouth of a live one before.

Everyone in the room was shocked and after a few more questions, it was obvious that she was very reckless and self-sacrificing. Yep, she was going to fit into this crazy family just fine.

And Holy Shit. There is so much trauma packed into this kid. She needs lots of therapy.

Babs finally decided that they all needed to get out and have some fun. All in their respective suits and they went out.

Joined by Harley, Ivy and Selina.

Plagg came along because I want Plagg to meet Selina.

It was a chaotic night and it was a miracle that Bruce didn’t find out about what the girls did.

Batman and Red Hood were on patrol together when Selina jumped in front of them.

“Hello, Boys”

“What do you want, Catwoman?”

“I want to meet my new prodigy, Kitty Noire.”

Cue Marinette jumping down from her hiding spot, transformed with the Black Cat Miraculous. “Hiya.”

Red Hood carries her like a potato sack and points his gun at the other two.

“Nope, she’s my sister and I called dibs. I adopted her. She’s off limits.”

“Legally, she’s mine.” Batman coughed out.

“I did it first. Emotionally. She’s my emotional support sister. You have plenty kids already, B and Selina, get your own.”

“Hey, I am still here and can hear you.”- Maria

Alya was worried for Lila. She had been acting weirdly for the past month.

She looked very out of sorts. Her clothes weren’t in order and her hair was in disarray. She had bags under her eyes and her eyes looked wild. Lila didn’t look like herself at all.

She jumped at any sound and flinched at really sudden movements.

Alya tried to find out what was wrong with Lila and received vague answers.

One time Lila said that Marinette is to blame.

Alya reaches the somewhat right conclusion that Marinette was haunting Lila and hurting her because Lila used to come to school with bruises and claims that Marinette did it.

Alya goes to Marinette’s grave to desecrate it. (Yeah, go anger the ghost that is haunting someone.)

Unfortunately, the moment she tries to do something, the sky turns dark, clouds appear and the wind begins whipping. A Lightning strike near her and there was a cloaked figure beside her with a scythe.

All Alya saw from the figure was the blood-red lips in a very sharp grin and glowing blue eyes, raising the scythe high before she ran away. The scythe swiped the air where her head once was.

Alya didn’t get far before she tripped and blacked out.

When she woke up, she found herself in the hospital with no idea how she got there.

She was told that somebody found her with a concussion in the park and took her to the hospital.

The next one on Mari’s hit list was Natalie.

She wasn’t as involved in the whole thing like Lila, Adrien or Gabriel but she still did it anyways.

Her punishment is a little mild compared to the others and was more of a warning to Gabriel.

Natalie woke up in the middle of the night to see a not-so-dead Ladybug sitting on her vanity chair with the moonlight from the windows illuminating her body and her neck. Her suit was torn exactly like the day of that battle with blood dripping down her arms and from her open wounds. The shadows kept her face hidden but glowing blue eyes stared at her.

Natalie was scared at first. But she regained her normal cool composure.

“I assume you are here to extract your revenge for aiding in your unfortunate demise. But before you kill me, I regret my part in my entire thing and I apologize for everything I have done against you even though I knew it was wrong.”

“At least you show remorse over what you have done. Visiting my grave when even my parents didn’t and leaving flowers. I love those purple hyacinths by the way. Did you know that they mean sorry in the language of the flowers?”

“Why are you stalling my death? Just kill me already.”

“Madam Sancouer. You just played a minor role in my downfall compared to what Adrien and Lila Rossi did to me. And you showed more guilt over your actions than they ever did and Adrien claimed to have loved me. And like I have told the Bats, Death is too swift of a punishment.”

“Who are the bats?”

“None of your concern. You should be more concerned about yourself.”

“Lila sees the ghosts of her past and they haunt her. Adrien is in a living nightmare and has no control over his actions and is despised by everyone. What are you going to do to me?”

“Well, since you show some guilt over your actions, let me tell you a little secret. I am not dead. Not really. I mean I did die. But there was a spell in the grimoire that revived me. It took a few days to work.”

Marinette changed to her normal form. It was a little jarring to see an older Marinette Dupain-Cheng sitting on her vanity chair like it was a throne. The Ladybug suit and the wounds were gone. She looked a little familiar.

“Why are you telling me this? What was the point?” Natalie faltered as she wondered why the girl looked familiar. Marinette moved closer and her face was fully illuminated by the moonlight.

“I intend to take everything by which I mean everything from Gabriel Agreste for what he did.”

“M. Agreste just wanted his wife back. You just gave him your Miraculous, you would still have everything.”

“What difference would it make? Sure I had friends and family before but they turned out to be disappointing. I might have become a famous designer like I dreamed of and can't achieve because I died. Besides, he never said about wanting his wife to come back in his tedious monologues. For all we knew back then, he wanted them for world domination. He showed that he would end the world for them. For kwamis’ sake, he nearly started World War III, just for a pair of earring and a ring. He was willing to kill me to have her back. No wait, he did that too. If he actually read the translated grimoire or asked the Guardian or at least someone with magic for help instead or maybe used his head and made some who can heal as his champion using the Butterfly, we wouldn’t even be in this mess. Face it, Mme Sancour, your boss is a power-hungry and very controlling maniac who is also thankfully an idiot.”

“But- he- he just-. You are just a child, what do you know? M. Agreste knew what he was doing.”

“A child who had a normal life up until he tried to ruin it with his idiotic schemes and hiring Lila to do it. A child who had to fight a war on her own.”

“I am sorry you had to go through that but I doubt you and your little revenge rampage is going to solve anything.”

Ghostly Chains wrapped around Natalie’s body, squeezing tight like it was squeezing the life out of her.

“I was all for sparing you, you know. If you had actually listened to my side of the story, you would have spared from my ‘little revenge rampage’. This is going to be a little painful. Sorry about that.” In a tone that was definitely not sorry.

Pain coursed through Natalie’s body. Her skin crawled and itched as pitch back feathers grew out of it. Her bones turned to dust and reformed.

Where Natalie Sancour once was, there was a raven.

An omen of death and destruction for one Gabriel Agreste.

Marinette leaned down towards the raven. Natalie tried to peck her eye out but Marinette held the beak in a firm grip.

“Ah. ah ah. Luckily for you this is temporary. Mostly. Every night, you will assume this shape and each night the longer you will stay in this form. Slowly counting down the days until Gabriel’s downfall. Since you love helping him so much, you are going to help him know how long he has to live. The night you are a raven from sunset to sunrise, that sunrise starts the day Gabriel Agreste will be utterly destroyed.”

She released the beak and headed towards the window.

"Send him my regards."

With that, she was gone.

Okay but I stand by the idea that it would, in fact, be both funny and genius, if after Vic woke up and found out that there's a lot less Titans and they need to bring some new or old ones back, called up Nightwing. And Dick is like:

"Oh yeah, no, I'm in NY right now, just settling in, this is not a great time for me. But I just know the guy. And you know him, too. He covered for me a couple of times. And he was listed as a member of the reserve. He's here with me now, so you're in luck!"

Vic: "It's Jason, isn't it."

Dick: "Yes. He wants to bond. Please take him off my hands."

Vic: "He kills people though."

Dick: "Like half of the Titans did, at some point. Besides, aren't you going after Brotherhood of Evil? I doubt he could manage to kill any of them, but on off chance he will. Couldn't happen to the nicer guys. They did bomb Bludhaven."

Vic: "He attacked Robin in Titans Tower. Before that, he ambushed me, Beast Boy, and Raven."

Dick: "I mean, like half of the Titans at some point."

Vic: "You know, the team cohesion really needs to work."

Dick: "So he's the perfect addition! He's so annoying, everyone will hate him and bond over it."

Vic: "He's not that bad. I remember him being really sweet, actually."

Dick: "See? You like him already. And, you know, I think it's just what he needs. Who knows, maybe you will reform him through the power of friendship! Worked with the rest, right?"

Vic: "No, most of them died."

Dick: "Well, I would be at peace with this outcome as well."

And so it goes. Jason becomes a member of Teen Titans.

Jason circa that time period a "just want to find a friend"vibe, so when teaming up with both Speedy and Nightwing fails, and Vic invites him to join up again, he agrees.

Well, Vic has some conditions:

1) Not hurting any teammate - easy, he doesn't hurt people just for kicks and giggles
