Jack might’ve spotted the ones she’d pinned to the fridge. Bruce saw plenty, if crime scene photos counted. But Tim’s favorites? His civilian-friendly favorites, the ones behind him? This was the first time anyone beside himself had seen them. And Jack wasn’t there. Or Tim's alone at another school event, Bernard helps.

Cryp-Tim by PrinceJakeFireCake (Tim Drake/Kon-El), 6k, Fluffy, Cryptid Tim The cons of dating Tim Drake were innumerous. For one, he was almost impossible to photograph, and so none of Kon’s friends at school actually believed he existed. His family was scary, horrifying really, and all of them seemed to find joy in making Tim regret ever being born. And Tim had charmed Ma and Pa Kent so thoroughly, they had ditched their shovel talk to instead coo at him and offer him pie and compliment him for fixing their tractor, so Kon was at a disadvantage when it came to intimidating someone with his family. Kon and Tim date. It goes pretty well, all things considered.

A Worthy Father by Crowlows19 (gen), 3k, Fluff and Angst Jack Drake forces his son to give up being Robin. He could never have predicted the consequences of parenting a Robin-less Tim Drake. He may never sleep again and Bruce Wayne certainly has no sympathy for him.

As some of you might be aware, Wattpad is currently undergoing a purge. TLDR; there's an AI bot that flags content for review, people's stories are being shadow-banned or deleted. Moving to ao3 is highly encouraged.

Podfic Recs!

One of my favorite things about fanfic is the existence of podfics. That said, I'm excited to share a few of my favorites with you! I tried to go for a wide range of fandoms so there should be something for everyone.

Works Alone read by kbirb pods (kbirb) Batman, (gen), 20 mins, Crack, Batfam When trying to pull the team together, Bruce’s ideas are dismissed, because he 'works alone'. He goes home to his kids to pout about it.

Straight On Till Morning read by reena_jenkins DC Legends of Tomorrow, (Sara Lance/Mick Rory/Leonard Snart), 2-2.5 hrs, AU-Canon Divergence Left alone in the Refuge, Mick and Sara decide they're going to be proactive about their fate. They end up becoming time pirates. Because of course they do.

The Haunting of Harrison Wells read by luvtheheaven (VioletEmerald) The Flash, (gen), 2-2.5 hrs, AU-No Powers, AU-Ghost Story Harrison Wells died in 1958. Almost sixty years later, Barry Allen meets a ghost in STAR Labs.

Not a Damsel in Distress read by nickelmountain Supernatural, (gen), 10-20 min, Pre-Canon, Case Fic Mary smiles and shrugs when her dad looks at her. Mermaids. She hates water-creatures. She hates killing things on family holidays. “Mary can come with me,” David says grandly. or, Mary and a cousin go hunting. The cousin is less than helpful.

Readers Notes:  This fic manages to pack in a shocking amount of intensity despite having such a short word count. The flow and pacing of this story is flawless, the character work is on point, and the combination of comic superhero shenanigans and tragedy makes for a tone that feels a little like whiplash. THE WRITING STYLE!!!! Very English Author from the 1900’s, I can’t get over it.

Readers Notes: This fic is going to live with me forever. I’m going to be sitting in a lecture hall thinking about this fic. I’m going to be at the grocery store, thinking about this fic. It’s going to be with me when I die. Mind meld is not a trope I usually reach for when I’m looking for something to read. It’s a difficult trope to do well, and with this cast of characters it needs to be handled delicately. However, this fic has amazing characterization, wonderful writing, and is surprisingly feel-good. DC could stand to learn something from TheResurrectionist. TDLR; this fic has me gnawing and rattling at the bars of my cage, go read it!

Cass is trying her damnedest not to drown. She doesn't want anyone else to drown either. She just wants to be good. She is maybe, just maybe, not okay.

charity by Valkrin (gen), 7k, Different First Meeting, Bad Parent!Drakes The biggest downside of being adopted by Bruce Wayne is putting up with rich people events, including one where Jason will be in a room with a bunch of rich kids for a couple very long hours while Bruce goes to the adults' meeting. Jason is ready for a very bad time but the Drake kid listens to him from the start and keeps backing up Jason's ideas even though they've never met. Jason warms up to Tim Drake long before Mad Hatter tries to take over the meeting and Tim backs him up again.

The Spiciest Ghost

Summary: Duke Thomas can see dead people. Kind of. It’s a long story, you know?

Readers Notes: This was so precious! Duke-centric! I haven’t read enough Duke fics which is a mistake I’m going to have to rectify. This fic is sort of a character study of character study, with a focus on Duke and Dick. It’s a quick read, managing to be both lighthearted and insightful with a happy ending that feels well deserved.

Take a look at my TBR!

Now, like most anyone who reads things, and reads them extensively, I have a tbr. So! Let's take a look at a couple fics on my list.

To Open Every Door to Night, To Meet Each Rising Sun by Erisenyo Avatar: The Last Airbender, (Sokka/Zuko), 240k, Fire Nation Politics, AU-Post-Canon I picked this up towards the end of my interest in ATLA so I got about halfway through reading it before I was interrupted and then I just couldn't pick it back up again. I loved the writing and the characterization was stunning. It was great! I'm hoping I get to finish it one day.

The Leap by FriendofCarlotta Supernatural, (Destiel), 82k, AU-Cold War, The Berlin Wall This Destiel fic is set in Cold War era Germany and has equal amounts of pining and period-typical homophobia. I originally picked this fic up as part of the 2022 DCBB and because I liked the art that went with it. I read the first two chapters of this fic and then had to set it down because it was pretty heavy and I'm just not into SPN enough anymore to carry myself through 80k of vintage angst. If you liked 91 Whiskey you'll like this fic.

There are no wolves left in Ireland by CatSteppingOnAKeyboard IT x Derry Girls, (gen), 70k, Biblical Horror, Humor The only reason I haven't read this fic yet is that I haven't watched Derry Girls. I LOVED this authors previous two works (here and here) so I'm willing to try but I haven't gotten around to it. I have great confidence that this fic will be wonderful.

a bandit, a princess, and a knight in scarlet armor by  writerdragonfly The Flash (TV 2014), (Leonard Snart/Barry Allen), 8k, Kid Fic, Dad!Barry Allen summary This is part two of the series that convinced me to give Coldflash a try. I'm sorry to report that I still prefer Coldwave but the first part of this series was so precious I mostly just haven't gotten around to reading part 2.

Macushla by Hinn_Raven Batman Comics (multi), 12k, Stephanie Brown-Centric, AU-Assassins You know those fics you hold onto purely in anticipation of their greatness? No? Just me? Hinn_Raven has written several other fics that I love and that I've already recced on this blog but I've mostly held out on this fic out of cowardice.

Something I want to note is that none of these fics are bad or lacking in any way. Sometimes with fanfic you meet a fic at exactly the right time, or exactly the wrong one. Just 'cause I haven't read them doesn't mean you can't!

February Monthly Recap

I had a lot of fics this month. Every one of these deserves a dedicated post of its own but in the interest of efficiency this roundup will have to do!

BATMAN

Uptown Girl by orphan_account (Stephanie Brown/Cassandra Cain), 60k, Case Fic, Friends to Lovers Stephanie Brown has three problems: a supervillain father with a deadly scavenger hunt in the works, a mysterious rich girl who's way too interested in her life, and one really, really painful hobby. Alternatively: a different kind of Spoiler origin story.

The Lois Angle by cabezas_de_vaca (gen), 15k, Bruce & Lois Friendship, Case Fic What she had with Bruce was novel, exhilarating. She had fallen in love several times, and that was like a great swoop of a wing, a flash and flush and then long tumble, but this was like a warmth that welled up from within. This was Bruce grappling up to her thirtieth story Metropolis apartment, stowing the Batsuit in the bathroom, and watching StarTrek with her. This was her driving to the manor when she couldn't sleep, only to find she could do it there. This was having a friend. Or: Despite the long shadow Batman casts and the demands of being one of the youngest Pulitzer winners ever, Bruce and Lois manage to steady each other, in the way that only friends can. Also, there's a case they need to solve. 

the scientific method by orphan_account (gen), 20k, Sibling Bonding, Duke-centric 5 stupid ways Duke's siblings discovered how his powers worked, and 1 time he figured it out for himself. "You have no idea," Dick said. "I had to live through all of their teenage years. They were each independently obsessed with Mythbusters at separate points in their life. I'm pretty sure Cass and Tim have wanted a meta to experiment on since they were 14, but Bruce always said no."

Meet Me Where You're Going by Hinn_Raven (Stephanie Brown/Cassandra Cain), 68k, Slow Burn, Mutual Pining When things get complicated in Hong Kong, Cass requests help from Batman Inc. Unbeknownst to her, Bruce dispatches not one of her brothers, but Stephanie Brown, who Cass has not spoken to since she gave up the Batgirl mantle. Steph is eager to reunite with her best friend, but things between them are complicated. Not the least of the problems is the fact that Steph might be falling in love… but of course, Cass is straight, so Steph really shouldn’t dwell on that. Friendship and romance, conspiracy and adventure await the two of them as they try to unravel a complicated plot that seeks to stop Batman Incorporated before it can truly begin.

when you move, fall like a thunderbolt by orphan_account (Stephanie Brown/Cassandra Cain), 5k, Villain!Steph, Canon Divergence In another universe, Stephanie Brown's plans to kill her father aren't interrupted by Batman. Which means nobody stops her from tripping and falling headlong into running her own gang, and then a little more intentionally rising to the top of the underworld. Meanwhile, seeing as Bruce only has one kid who actually wants to carry on the good name, Cassandra Cain takes over as the Batman of Gotham's future. This would be a fine turn of events if it weren't for the fact that they've been dating on-and-off for ten years.

falling without caution by coffeecrowns (gen), 17k, Bad Parent!Bruce, PTSD Jason is twenty, decidedly less into murder, trying to avoid developing agoraphobia, and putting together some pieces into a life. Tim is sixteen, riding the edge of burnout, and in a show of his truly baffling survival instincts, decides Jason is friend shaped. 

MICE ON VENUS by NEOCULTUREDAUS (gen), 3k, Tim & Damian Bonding “Timothy, if this is revenge for me trying to kill you, I need you to know I’m not sorry.” Damian’s eyes were clamped shut, hands fisting Tim’s hoodie so tightly that if Tim tried moving, he simply wouldn't be able to. “I’m not trying to get revenge. And open your eyes, you can’t ride a skateboard with them closed.” Tim patronized, prying Damian’s hands off him, you know, like someone evil who didn’t care for the wellbeing of his younger brother. Or The one where skater Tim takes his artist younger brother graffiti painting

So Sweet Saluteth Me by Lishalalalalala (gen), 7k, Good Dad!Bruce Sleep deprived™ Jason hangs out with Dick then they surprise Bruce at work with early lunch and some love. This fic is inspired by farmers’ markets on those summery days and the belief that if I run fast enough the sad can never catch me. (I mean you are telling me that Bruce Thomas/Alan Wayne wouldn’t be absolutely BASKING in joy if his kids just decided to randomly show up at Wayne Enterprise and pay him a little midday visit? )

to count by miles or days or people (when will i stop missing you) by jcp_sob_rjl_lmep (gen), 22k, Angst, Hurt/Comfort When Duke is kidnapped off of the streets of Gotham on his way back to the Manor from visiting his parents, it sends the entire Batfamily into a panic. With very little evidence to go on and time slipping past them, there's no help coming as Duke is forced to make a grand escape and get himself home before his kidnappers find him once more.

birds and brothers and other assorted synonyms by Ao3time, hoebiwan, quandaries_and_contradictions (gen), 21k, Series, Found Family A Reverse Robin AU in which Damian is a tired older brother, Duke is a ray of sunshine, and Dick is a baby talon.

Readers Notes: Cracky, fun, and silly, this fic had me giggling and kicking my feet at my computer screen. YJ98 are always such a fun set of characters and make for the sort of plot that is classic comic book nonsense. If you are at all familiar with YJ98 you’ll have heard of the “Young Justice is responsible for the death of Santa Claus in the DCU” thing that goes around every couple of months and that’s what this fic is all about!

Summary:

Slowly, ominously, melodically, the opening notes of All I Want for Christmas filtered in. Kon shrieked. Cassie leaped up, or at least attempted to, and was slammed back to the floor by Kon’s iron grip on her hair. Tim, on reflex, grabbed a Batarang and prepared to fight the speaker, but before any of them could act, Bart had already sped back over to the console, ripped out the wire, and held the torn cords aloft like the head of Medusa. “Killed it!” he announced breathlessly. His hair was poofed like an electrocuted cat. OR Young Justice goes on a merry quest to fulfill the final wish of a past mistake.
