Otome Games/Dating Sim Recs

Okay so I’m a person who prefers he/him or they/them pronouns, right? (Like excessive she/her kills me - idk if I’m a trans guy or genderfluid and leaning male but-)

But I like playing otome games and stuff like that but I can’t find many that have gender-neutral pronouns.

ive played Obey Me, Arcana (though struggling because so much stuff I need to pay to enjoy), and Twisted Wonderland (which is not technically a dating sim but I like the vibes).

i want to find a good otome/dating sim that is completely free to play (kinda like obey me, where you don’t really need that much money to get the full experience/unlock romantic routes/etc) and if they have voice actors, have them be Japanese or English (possibly Spanish, but I don’t think I’m ready for that yet lmfao).

I prefer male love interests over female, so there’s also that-

it would also be great if the Mc wasn’t shown (like the three that I’m currently playing). And again, if they don’t use “she/her” pronouns much or at all, that would be great (nicknames are okay, like if the nicknames were used most of the time and pronouns were rarely used, even if the MC is thought of as a girl (like in Twisted Wonderland, where everyone calls MC “Prefect”))

and i play on my iPhone so nothing for computers and stuff please (if it’s a website it’s okay)

so like yeah I don’t know how many people this will reach but it is what it is

It's another sexy horror game! The difficulty is super high, and there is no love interest! Our protagonist is a level 1 maid! The only way to survive is a long road! The powerless maid must convince her murderous lord! Life is precious! Please don't kill me! Yes, she is kind of pathetic. But hey at least she's trying.

Hilda was an ordinary girl.

She falls asleep playing a really tough horror game.

It's about a murderous noble man.

The perpetrator/protagonist is really hot.

It's his one and only good point.

On the inside he is a literal demon.

The opening scene is literally him killing a maid, and not regretting it at all.

Hilda is a gossip prompt,that the player can use to glean information about the killings.

She's...not a super good maid.

She's kinda lazy.

Unremarkable.

She is horrified to be Hilda.

By the way the horror game is so gory that it got bad reviews.

When the game starts Adrian is bored.

Hilda has to make him not bored.

Chapter one ends with her staring at her uniform in horror.

I think this one can't fail.

this was never in the history of forever ever gonna happen and i understand why it didn't and why it won't but i would've died 1000 deaths for a male mc in mcl. not even just in new gen, i would've loved to be gay asf in hsl, ul and ll too:') this isn't like a critique or anything but a guy can dream right😂😂?

I'm sorry, friend. I really wish you and everyone were able to play the game as you wish and wouldn't have to "adapt" to what is available. Unfortunately some features like a male MC or multiple f/f routes are too expensive for a small company like Beemoov.

Tbh I haven't seen many otome games with a male MC around, otome by definition have female protagonists. There are lots of BL games around though (BL = boys love) where the MC is gender locked as male and all the crushes are male. I've never played one so I can't recommend any but if you look for BL games I'm sure you're going to find a ton!

Other than BL/yaoi games, there are games with no visuals of the MC so you can assume they are whatever gender you prefer (oten they let you choose pronouns). Generally these games have no illustrations or they do but only show the crushes alone without the MC. A few names I can think of are Arcana, Obey Me, Touchstarved (only the demo is out at the moment), When The Night Comes and other games from the same company (iirc there was some drama around it but I'm not informed). Again, take a look around because there are many! I think these games are generally referred to as Amare games, because they have the same formula of otome games but aren't strictly aimed at a female audience.

The only otome game with visuals I can think of which attempted to have both female and male MC and also multiple routes (5 male and 5 female) is Sweet Elite. However, I would say that it failed in this attempt, because in 12 episodes of the first season, there is only one episode with 1-1 illustrations with the crushes, then there is one episode where there are illustrations of the crushes alone, and everything else is group illustrations, max 2 or 3 per episode. (To me it ended up feeling more like a friendship game than a romance game.)

So, clearly, it's even more proof that when games have a big visual component and also offer customisation, it's basically impossible to have two genders MC. Unless it's a huge company producing them, but I'm not even sure that's the case because Is It Love? games for example were produced by Ubisoft and they didn't even offer look customisation, let alone gender customisation.

Another suggestion I can give you, is to check out mobile apps such as Chapters, Choices and Episodes. These aren't exactly otome games, but more similar to romance books translated as games. They have huge libraries and several titles are either gender locked yaoi or you can pick your own gender. You can even customise the looks of the MC and the crushes, but of course there are no CGs.

Oh, and one last thing that comes to mind, another option for you could be to check out dating app simulation games, basically fake tinder apps, they have lots of crushes each one with their own story, you can choose pronouns but your avatar will never appear in game or in CGs. A few names I remember are MeChat, Love Link, Love Verse, but I'm sure there are more. The stories can be quite entertaining so I suggest you check them out. (I remember MeChat had both a Lysander and a Castiel lookalikes).

So really, there are SO MANY games around that there's no need to stick to one where we have to adapt to game features we don't like. Ultimately MCL's main target audience are straight, cis women (with a very small offering of f/f routes) and I wouldn't stick to it if I weren't one. I remember when I started playing 11 years ago and I was looking for more games in a language I could understand and I could find very little, now instead there's so much competition that there's something for literally everyone.

i actually tried to get into Tears of Themis! specifcally because Artem looked like You Know Who. i didn't get very far into it (gachas don't appeal to me anymore, don't ask me how much i've spent on Genshin Impact) but i was actually surprised how much i ended up like Vyn. never found out what his deal was but i love evil scientist archetypes lmao. another issue i had with the game was that Luke and Marius had absolutely no appeal to me; at least in Mysme, charas i'm not romantically inclined towards like Yoosung and Luciel still interested me because they were fun and complex characters beyond their attractiveness and "fix me" suffering. maybe it was because i never got past a certain point in the game, but those two from ToT just never grabbed my interest : \

as for any other otome games i like........

there's a promising one in development rn that i've been following since it blew up on twitter a few months ago called Touchstarved. it seems very promising and has a lot of fantasy monsters and magics and stuff, plus the art is FANTASTIC. you can actually check out their official account here @redspringstudio

another one i love of course is Ebon Light which you can download and play completely FOR FREE on itch.io, really great dark fantasy world and a slew of not!drows to romance

rn i'm playing DoL, it's basically a porn game that includes a BUNCH of really dark topics. like, even if you don't have triggers, look up the triggers for this game, it is not for those with weak stomachs. that said, all the sex scenes aside, it does have romance interests in it you can date, a compelling plot, as well as a staggering amount of player agency to do with what you will in the town and surrounding forest/land/ocean. again, do you're research before picking this game up or you will be in for a bad time

A proposal from a prince. Happily ever after. Being reincarnated in an otome game. It all sounds so easy, but guilt takes hold of our heroine. She admits the truth. She's a liar. A manipulator who used secret information to gain affection from a man who doesn't truly know her. She confesses and falls into a trap

Mai has taken the place of a character named Sophie. Sophie is beautiful, refined, smart and popular. Mai had to work really hard to pretend to be Sophie. Without her in-game knowledge she would have been doomed!

She cheated, and she knows it.

The inevitable proposal comes. She made it. She collected enough game points to capture the crown prince. She will become the most decorated lady...wait? What happens after the game ends? This particular game was rated G. It was for younger readers. It wasn't very complicated. Marriage was the end. She's not sure if she can handle being queen, and she can't keep collecting affection points after the last scene. Mai thinks Prince Albert will never love her underneath her cheat codes. She's just a loser holding up a beautiful puppet shaped like Sophie.

She admits it with pain in her heart. She thinks Prince Albert would be a great husband, but lies are not a great foundation for a relationship. She babbles a bit, and she accidentally makes it sound like being with him is troublesome. She does literally say he's not suitable for her.

He, naturally, assumes she was just playing with his feelings.

Bear in mind.

Prince Albert just proposed to Sophia. He wants to make her his political and romantic partner. He has spent years agonizing over this important political and personal decision. Sophia isn't even the ideal bride. He had to prepare himself to take on extra hardship, just to get the right to marry her.

He was the perfect gentleman the entire time.

Mai says she's going back.

She can't keep living in a lie.

She doesn't want to chase after Sophia forever.

Prince Albert admits he doesn’t just want her because she's the best woman. She's not a cute doll to him. The game suddenly turns R18 real quick.

He was acting like a gentleman. He's been wanting to make their relationship official for a while. He's possessive. He's been watching her. Being overly polite has been killing him.

When she blows off his feelings he confesses it all.

He likes her vulnerable side. He became obsessed after she changed. She became someone he wanted to hang out with and have fun with.

That's actually super sweet, but he's very angry. His prince mask falls apart completely, and he makes her admit it. He makes her say that she wants him, over and over, until he is satisfied.

It doesn't matter if she thinks she's unworthy of him.

He's been waiting for her.

He's repressed.

Slightly boring backstory but it's passable.

He asks for her real name and their romance begins for real. No need to worry about affection points.

He's all hers.

Bloomic doesn't really focus on how you got the invite, why links to the server keep getting deleted and such until NakedToaser's route and its really a breath of fresh air from lore-heavy, confusing stories. Bloomic doesn't shine in its great stories in my opinion, it shines in its characters and their interactions with one another. When you play, it truly feels like you're in a fan server. The way they fangirl/fanboy over fanarts, Ship wars, some of the members being more devoted to Bloomic and others. Plus the way they respond is realistic.

So I've talked too long about the dialogue and not the characters, it is an otome game after all. There are a total of 11 characters who appear and 9 are active characters who appear and interact with you in every route and 4 are romancable. Each of the characters have very diverse personalities and play different roles in each route, I'm not gonna go over them all but I am going to be going over the lis and their routes.

The first is a menace to society, a lurker in the shadows ready to pounce you with a funny quip.. this is no other than our resident troll.. xyx. Holy shit did xyx remind me of so many people I know, hes got the same attitude, everyone treats him and his jokes the same way and he has the same dilemma. xyx was the first route I did and honestly, it was a bit over the place, I think his main conflict is his cat and his injury? but he had alot of stuff. Buut, very enjoyable. The voice actor(Mike Young) is absolutely wow (kudos to him for doing the tongue twisters lol). Overall 8/10 maybe?

Our next guy is a little jealous, a college student, has a bit of a habit of staying up, blonde, 5'7 and a cutie <3

Ah.. wait a minute.

There he is.. may I present to you, Night Owl. Nightowl is a bit overwhelming ngl. Honestly he scared me quite a bit, he is very loveable but he can get really expressive and it can become suffocating to stay, especially in the videocall where he gets drunk before his exam. Still, his story was very interesting and had me glued more than xyx's did. btw still waiting for that onion videocall, please onion route robobarbie

The next guy is buff and tired dad of the server, no other than Quest. Ngl Quest isn't really my type so I wasn't really excited to play his route but it was very sweet. One thing I have to say though, fuck societyboy, all my homies hate societyboy. Fr saw the joker movie and decided the joker was his idol smh. I ended up swooning over Quest though, hes the perfect mix of promising he'll bring you home by 9 and your daughter calls me daddy. very nice...

Last boy is Nakedtoaster, don't let his name fool you.. he is.. very serious. This is the last route you'll play and it will finally address the suspicious part about all of this. This is way more serious than the others routes than a we can get over this together! type of thing.. well it sort of still is like that. The reveal of who the author of Bloomic is also here lol, much more lore focused than the other ones, I was sort of tired doing his route and I just used the max speed option alot. Nakedtoaster's good ending is VERY satisfying though, seeing everyone come back and all. It felt so relieving.

So conclusion, definitely recommend Blooming Panic, its on itch.io so go download it and swoon.

10/10 voice acting, 8/10 story, 10/10 art, 9/10 characters and 9/10 script.
