Macaque: "No that's YOU! You're the one always running off! Looking for more power, more sources of immortality—you're the one who wouldn't quit while were were ahead! Not the great sage, he's got to drag EVERYONE else into his mess!" Sun Wukong: "You're not in this mess, you're still free! Everything I did was for us!" Macaque: "You did it for yourself! You've become like this, obsessive demon! I told you going against the Jade Emperor was a bad idea, but no, Wukong doesn't listen to anyone! He just does whatever he wants! You put yourself here, not me."

A large part of Wukong's motivation to keep getting more power was the freedom of it—the more power you have the easier it is to do whatever you want. It's easier to ignore everyone else and focus solely on yourself. It's also easier to ensure yourself and your loved one's are protected and have the ability to do what they want.

So, a punishment where the great Monkey King is imprisoned and trapped for hundreds of years? It's effective and tragic and fitting. Wukong wanted to have the freedom to protect the people he cared about, and in trying to reach for the power to do that, he completely had his freedom removed. He went from the mountain, to then the circlet, and then all of a sudden he had morals and was bound to those.

And then I think about his end of s3 choice to go face the Lady Bone Demon alone. Once again Wukong was trying to protect his loved ones (not to mention the whole reason he went after the Samadhi fire to begin with was to have the power, the freedom to stop LBD (which in itself is another case of SWK believing he needed to be stronger for such freedom)), but he also wanted to make sure MK and himself both had agency. He didn't want MK to have to fight LBD, and he didn't want LBD to end the world.

This is exactly the sentiment he tells Macaque in the 4x11 flashback:

Sun Wukong: "It's so we don't have to worry about anything or anyone ever again! Just living a lazy life, sitting in the sun, eatin' fruit, and doing whatever we want!"

But where does it all lead him?

To possession, imprisonment. Once again Wukong no longer had the freedom to do what he wanted (which is to protect the people he cares about). Once again in his attempts to help his loved one's, he only hurt them.

This can be applied to his relationship with Macaque, to MK in s2, hell, even Wukong trying to get the map in the first place left him powerless, which then led to him and the gang being imprisoned in 3x02. It's a familiar pattern, one we see with antagonist and protagonist alike.

MK in s2 trained to become more powerful, which in the end only strengthened LBD and forced him and his friends on the run. Mei in 3x12 protects MK by letting herself get captured and placed into LBD's crystal. Mei in 4x05 goes to protect MK, breaking her sword and leaving her vulnerable to being captured by Kui Mulang ("How am I supposed to protect everyone without my sword?"). DBK reached for more power and then became possessed by LBD, hurting his wife and son. Azure reached for the Jade Emperor's power and bound himself to that role, jeopardizing Peng and Yellowtusk in the process.

It's a cycle of reaching for power, endangering others, and then being imprisoned.

So anyways, here's why MK is going to lose control (his agency) next season and hurt his friends with his own- *get's shot*

How do you view Erlang, SWK, NuWa and MK?

SO GLAD YOU ASKED ANON! I HAVE. N O T E S.

Firstly: I do not view Nüwa as someone who is motherly in the same way other people (seemingly) do. I do think, because she created humans and has spent time with them, she has a distinct personality. She’s approachable but she’s also got a cold and closed off personality.

Secondly: I think back on how she cursed a king because he lusted after a statue of her and claimed he wanted to marry her—pissed her off so badly he sent three fem-spirits to keep him from performing his kingly duties.

So she is not a good motherly figure—even if she sometimes acts a little goofy. She’s also the Jade Emperor’s daughter in Investiture of the Gods and thus I kept her as such (meaning she’s Erlang’s cousin).

(Below is my design of Nüwa; to me, the more powerful gods/celestials have no pupils and only appear when displaying heavy emotions)

I read of the myth where a piece of sky fell when she was patching it and that rock that formed was Sun Wukong; I loved that myth so much I kept it for my interpretation of LMK Sun Wukong. He wasn’t meant to be born, he just sort of happened, and she made no effort to keep an eye on him.

Much like Nüwa, Erlang is different during the FSYY Era, he’s devoted to Heaven and fights alongside them even killing one of the evil spirits Nüwa sent down in a fight.

But eventually, after witnessing Su Daji’s execution, he realizes he, just like many other soldiers, were merely pawns in Heaven’s game. He moves away, to the mountains, with his sworn brothers and no longer obeys by Heaven’s rules so easily. He only visits when summoned by the Jade Emperor himself,

Cue our favorite monkey being thrown into the mix.

Sun Wukong met Erlang Shen shortly after becoming Bimawen. But the two officially met when he was the guardian of the peaches—so before the whole banquet situation happened. Sun Wukong, being wildly unaware of Nüwa’s play into his creation, is essentially a good parallel to how Erlang was: he believes Heaven is looking out for him, respecting him as if he were one of their own, and happily listens to them when they beckon or call for him (blissfully unaware that Azure Lion has been lying to him and that Heaven is genuinely scared of how much power he possesses).

Eventually, after Sun Wukong gets triple shot traumatized by Heaven, realizing Azure Lion groomed him to be this usable pawn for his own fantasy game, and he got Journey’d by a random monk—he and Erlang had a heart-to-heart after defeating a demon (king?) together. They both realized how messed up their lives were after touching upon how cruel and unusual Heaven’s punishments are (how they both have high expectations from the mentors in their lives)

And bam! Sworn brotherhood formed! (Swk is the little brother Erlang never wanted <3 and the little sister he misses <3)

Eventually, after Wukong meets Xiaotian—he connects the dots so quickly as to why this magic monkey-kid can replicate all his abilities, magic, tricks, and even withstand training with him for months without breaking much of a sweat,

Because baby boy was also crafted by the human-creating Goddess of Marriage.

He is disturbed by this.

He did not want a little clone.

Ultimately: the four of them have CENTURIES worth of trauma and influence on each other (You cannot escape the “heaven is cool” -> “fuck heaven i’m making my own rules” -> “i have 500 years of trauma in my bones” pipeline)

I’m still working on the next chapter for my current fic but I also thought I’d drop this little piece of writing since that post from @goshilovemesomemonsters got me thinking abt it again. It’s not related to the post tho, this is way before Macaque gets introduced

The hunter’s eyes narrow in suspicion at Sun Wukong’s words. It was obvious he held no trust in what he was saying. You couldn’t really blame him. If you weren’t with the bodhisattva when she recruited him, you wouldn’t believe him either.

Still, you were curious to see how this would play out. Now wasn’t the time to reveal yourself, so even if you wanted to vouch for the monkey demon, you wouldn’t. The shock of the little dove on Tripitaka’s shoulder being human would most likely shock them more than having the Great Sage as a disciple—

…Why is he staring?

Sun Wukong seems to have his sight fixed on you, confusion evident in his eyes. You could remember that stare as clearly as the day you met him in the palace. His eyes remained that same blood red, his irises a vibrant gold that hold a diamond gleam to them, accentuating his sharp stare.

He continues to eye you from his prison, his gaze narrowing. If you were in your true form, a frown would be set over your features. Why is he looking at you like that? He doesn’t know who you are… or does he? How could he see through your transformation?

Suddenly, his eyes widen, as though a torch has caught fire in his dimly-lit mind. "It's you! Wha— What are you doing?" His laugh is loud and hearty, confusing the others surrounding him.

The monk looks past your perched self on his shoulder and behind himself, then back to the Great Sage. "I thought you knew... you just said you were meant to be one of my disciples."

"Not you, the dove on your shoulder!" He points to you, the huntsman and his sons sharing looks of bewilderment with one another as they glance at your unsuspecting form. "It's you, isn't it? The vulgar maiden from the Jade Palace!"

This damn monkey! Why does he have to be like this? It’s like he makes it his mission to be the bane of your existence. With a groan, you take flight into the air, revealing your true form and landing on the ground. The collective gasp of your current travelling companions would have made you smile on any other occasion. Unfortunately, being exposed in such a way only made you grumble in annoyance.

His comments made your cheeks flush, a mix of anger and embarrassment rushing to your face. "You impudent ape! How dare you call me vulgar."

The monkey only laughs, seemingly pleased with his powers of deduction. "I knew it! I'd recognize that soothing presence anywhere. Nobody can hide from Old Monkey King." He gloats, making you want to roll your eyes. What an obnoxious egotistical—

"You're a woman?" The confusion in the Great Monk’s voice helps to remind you that you have an audience. That’s right, they thought you were an innocent dove this whole time. It’s not like you didn’t suspect this might happen sooner or later, but yelling at this demon? What were you thinking?

You quickly introduce yourself to the monk and tell him your name. “I am a faithful disciple to the bodhisattva, Guan Yin.” You begin to explain yourself quickly. “I apologize for only now revealing myself. The merciful goddess has tasked me in aiding your journey to the west with your disciples by lending you my gifts.”

The Tripitaka Monk frowns as he digests your words before his eyes widen in realization. “After I escaped those demons… it was you, wasn’t it? I felt as though I would lose my mind until you sat on my shoulder.”

You couldn’t help but smile as the true events of that incident became clear to him. “Yes, I possess the ability to soothe the mind, a gift granted to me by my teacher herself. I have been watching over you since the day you embarked on your journey.” As your eyes trail over to the imprisoned demon by your side, your kind smile quickly became sour. “Originally, it was my intent to observe your pilgrimage in silence.”

At the monkey’s snicker, your brow quickly twitched.

“However, I can confirm that there is no need for suspicion. For reasons unbeknownst to me, Guan Yin has called upon this demon to be your disciple.” You turn away quickly from the simian, instead providing his master with your upmost attention.

That, however, wasn’t enough to stop Sun Wukong from jutting into the conversation with an offended scoff. “Unbeknownst? I know exactly why she chose me, I’m the Handsome Monkey King! Nobody will ever come close to my master with me around!”

“Yes. I’m sure.” You grit your teeth in blatant annoyance as you attempt to retain your smile. No matter how much he got on your nerves, you had to be on your best behaviour.

But if he sounds this arrogant under a mountain, how much worse will he be once he’s free?

Wukong was always bad at admitting he cared about the ones close to him by playing the mischievous bad boy.

But when it was just the two of you alone he would let down the facade and show you how much he truly cared.

You weren’t that strong or possessed any special abilities but you always had a kind with an open heart and Wukong liked that about you.

After joining the group it didn't take long for him to grow an attachment to you, especially after every fight he got in you would check him up and down for injuries.

At first, he thought you were calling him weak by assuming he even had wounds from battling such feeble demons but discovering you just cared for him deeply changed his opinion of you.

A bond was formed between you two quickly and soon Wukong was with you all the time! No, seriously he did not leave you alone for a moment.

It didn’t matter if you visiting a town, going on a small walk, gathering fruits and herbs, or even going to the bathroom! Whenever you would bring up his clingy behavior he would brush it off claiming that it was all to make sure you don't get into ‘trouble’ or ‘die’ because you were too weak to protect yourself and to make sure a specific perverted pig didn't creep on you in the bath. you were silently grateful for that portion.

However, didn't matter the activity or time of day Wukong would never show his softness to you in front of others he was too prideful for that.

But alone he was so gentle with you and very physical. Whether he'd wanna lay his head on your lap or chest or have you lay on him he was always cuddling you!

But don't think it was one-sided affection you were giving him all the head scratches he could ever need! He would always purr if you got the spot behind his ear.

What you two are is together. simple together.

How would Mk and company(seperatly) react to the reader being cursed by LBD like just like Macaque. I want them to blame sun wukong for this because all of this is a bit his fault( ex: samadhi fire being in Mei...) Also i have a hate/love relationship with this guy for some reasons.

If you're possessed, they refuse to fight you. Wukong or Macaque will have to do it. But the whole time MK is yelling at you to keep fighting her control, to not give up, because they believe in you.

It takes a lot of self control for him to not let his emotions blind him to the main point of defeating LBD(saving the world, saving you)

He can play it off like he knew they would win, that you would be okay, but that's a mask and you both know it

Comfort him, thank him for saving you, reassure him you won't hate him and that it wasn't his fault

To start off, I think we would all love to say dating Macaque would be sunshine and rainbows, he would love you and treat you perfectly

He loves you a lot, don't get me wrong, he just has a very, very hard time showing it

Depending where in the series we’re talking about it's going to be quite different, but let’s just assume this is after LBD, ‘kay?

During this time Macaque is a lot more likely to stay in one place with you

Yes, maybe that consists of him popping into your apartment every now and then, but you slowly start seeing things around your place that aren’t yours

Piles of clothes, food, a toothbrush, his scarf at one point, all that jazz

But, this domestic scene is very… forgein to him

He’ll gladly sit down and watch your favourite stupid, predictable TV show with you for hours, but he’ll critique it the entire time

He insists that he help you cook, even though he knows even less than you and it always turns out a mess

You don’t even have to ask him to go shopping with you, he’ll use his shadows to get there quickly but will just stand beside you as you shop, not helping whatsoever

As I said in the last post, Macaque is very touch starved

But he also hates it lol

He doesnt think he deserves your touches

You’re just so perfect, how could you ever be happy settling for him?

Half of them are trying to talk to him, some are keeping a respectful distance, and some are glaring like he held them by the throat and forced them to take on this really obscure dangerous weapon that even its creator couldn't handle and that might have killed them and the entire world or sumthin

He’ll teach you how to make certain shadow puppets, but like the normal way with your hands

His are always better but he has powers so it doesn't count

Before Macaque initiates any physical affection he will always ask

“Can I hug you?” while physically holding himself from reaching for you

Along with that, he always makes sure you have a way out throughout everything

All you have to do is say ‘stop’ and he’ll pretend like it never happened

Macaque dreads the day you’ll finally wake up and realize you deserve so, so much better than him

He’s done despicable things in his long life, how can you love him knowing that? It’s really just a matter of time, he’s sure

But, even then, he’s going to savour every single moment he has with you

LMK!Macaque claims to be a teacher, however, we know that to be a teacher you must have achieved things and if he hears these learnings but did not learn them under a true immortal then his learning is 'contaminated'? Like, Wukong was taught under a true immortal but Macaque wasn't. I've been thinking that maybe lmk!Wukong taught him, but back then, Wukong wasn't a true immortal and I think Wukong's teacher wouldn't like Wukong teaching someone else when Wukong wasn't qualified yet to teach someone else. Furthermore, Wukong in most Chinese media usually teaches when the Journey has already been completed (like with Chenxiang). Although I know that LMK takes creative liberties, I would like to think that he had a teacher, but his teachings are also aggressive at the beginning. In any case, could we say that LMK!Macaque is not a true mentor due to the circumstances of his learning? However, I know that in Mei Hou Wang, Wukong trains with Macaque so that he can become more powerful.

I mean yeah it is clear that Macaque in LMK was never really a teacher since it was more a role he was playing to get Xiaotian to just use a ridiculous amount of power for him to steal. I read someone compare it to like teaching someone a backflip before building up their muscles to do the technique and I think that is applicable here. We see him learning how to hit harder but we don't see any real techniques, esp since the only enemy he fought was also a fake and therefore we are unable to know if he actually did any damage to it, the only comparison was the wall he hit and from Wukong's reaction that was more of a dangerous move than a helpful one. This could suggest that Xiaotian was at risk of hurting his body rather than improving his skills.

However, while I do not think that LMK Macaque was a teacher to Xiaotian I do think that LMK Macaque had a teacher of some kind considering that his skill set is different from Wukongs. This mostly means that Macaque trained with a magical lantern and therefore would have needed some kind of training to use a magical item. We haven't seen Wukong use shadow powers either, suggesting that Macaque learned this independently, another suggestion is that Macaque was trained either after Wukong got his training from Puti, or separately from Wukong's training at all.

It could be that LMK Wukong helped train Macaque but that would have to be only transformations and not the shadow magic or the lantern. This could explain why Macaque is much weaker than Wukong as he doesn't have complete training from a proper teacher but he would still need additional teaching somewhere else to get his additional powers.

I think that LMK Macaque isn't a 'true' mentor in that he hasn't trained or taught Xiaotian anything yet. He has given advice and been a good friend but that isn't solely what a teacher provides. Xiaotian has never used anything he has learned in training from Macaque again (at least that I know of) even if he does accept and appreciate his advice, but he does that with all his friends as well.

Mei Hou Wang 2009 does show Wukong teaching Liu'er what he learned from Puti's yes! While Liu'er had a teacher in White Deer Spirit I do not think even White Deer Spirit was a proper immortal in that he is a demon as well. Rather we see that with what Liu'er learned compared to what Wukong learned, Liu'er training doesn't even compare with how much weaker he is when he tried to attack Wukong in his sleep and Wukong didn't even notice. And it was only when Wukong started to train Liu'er that he got better but he still wasn't as strong as Wukong. It is only when Liu'er has another demon possessing his body that he matches Wukong's strength, the power of an additional demon making up for the lack of training.

All this to say that the chances of LMK Macaque having another teacher are high but I would say that it was a bogus immortal at best to train him in his powers and lantern. But I do not think that Macaque was trained by a true immortal and he wouldn't be the best mentor if he were to try to train others unless it was only in shadow magic or how to use his lantern.

I hunger for more AU what happens to the antagonists in the Reincarnation AU

So pretty much all the villains in the show got reincarnated via the spell and I guess this is going to explain what their reincarnated selves are like:

Jin and Yin became con artists though they somehow got their hands on some pretty useful mythical artifacts

PIF became an infamous thief known as Ironfan and she steals priceless and ancient artifacts from all over the world

DBK became Wukong's landlord and he's less of a villain this time around because his brother plays a much more antagonist role (for reasons I'll explain later)

Red Son isn't an antagonist in this au because Mei and MK befriended him when they were younger. They were more of a skating rival.

Spider Queen is an alchemist and due to her being born with six arms (she's half spider demon) she got treated rather harshly as a child and so now she's hellbent on turning everyone into spider demons like herself and ruling over them. She's also tricked the other spiders into working for her promising them each something that she'll give them once she rules the city.

Syntax wants someone to fund his research and tech and Spider Queen promised him that so he joined her.

Spindrax is just in it for the chaos and to watch her brother's back (her brother is Syntax)

Huntsman is a creepy dude (like horror movie villain creepy) and he is also an assassin. He joined Spider Queen for the money.

Strong Spider joined Spider Queen because he thinks that she'll make the city a better place. He's also a select mute in this au. He's also the only one in the spider gang that started out as a full Spider demon.

Scorpion Queen is still a Scorpion demon but she looks different now. She really just wants a good friend as she was always betrayed by her friends in the past which caused her to go a little mad in her search for the perfect friend aka she's a bit insane not going to lie

LBD and the Mayor are mafia members.

The Mayor is Bai He (LBD's hostess) dad and he was an okay dude but when his wife divorced him he got angry and LBD manipulated that anger and got him to join her and her mafia family.

LBD grew up in the bad parts of the city and vowed to make the city a better place so she became a politician but when that didn't work she sought out a future seer and asked them if she could ever change the city. The seer pointed her towards a life of crime and so LBD started her own mafia family. (She's also meant to be a mirror of Wukong in this as a way to contrast how Wukong could have turned out or how LBD could have turned out so they have similar childhoods).

However, LBD didn't get a chance to complete her mission as a young cop named Ba (See the reincarnation of General Ba from JTTW) shot and killed her in a cop vs mafia family shootout. This of course crushed the (not) Mayor and so he spent the next several years trying to find a way to bring her back, which he does eventually, but in the process, he ended up distancing himself from his daughter.

The camel ridge trio technically never got released from the scroll because everyone died before the events of season 4 could happen but they actually do show up because a mystery villain shows up and uses them like pawns to knock some sense into the celestial realm.

(Bonus) Macaque isn't really a villain in this au as he's more of a lancer for Wukong but, but he does get antagonistic moments as he keeps getting fucking possessed or his powers go out of control. Macaque's whole deal is that before he died against the possessed Monkey King he sent out Rumble and Savage to find him once he was reincarnated and give him back his powers (which they did) but while also giving him back his powers he got his memories back as well. Anyways by wizard rules in this universe, Macaque becomes a wizard. However, fun fact, he's wanted for grand theft auto (Ba hates him for this but hey, cars are cool).

Right, so I've been getting anons (which i don't get so it's been kinda surreal) and basically the proposition of a Oblivion variant where it's Monkey King who gets the mind control music and somehow goes down a corruption ark and ends up Little Brother-ifying Macaque and then *also* using it on Xiaotian and keeping him as well.

(And that's a bit open as to if it's baby brother or cub, but I kind of like the idea that since Sun Wukong basically raised Macaque anyways in the premise relationship this is spawning from, that Monkey King isn't entirely sure where he stands on what he'd doing with Xiaotian either, but also he decides that the specifics don't matter as much and what does is that he's got Xiaotian safe on FFM with Liu Er and nothing is going to take his family away from him EVER AGAIN)

But mostly I've been thinking about how we would get to a corruption for SWK, and how he would get a version of the music that works on Macaque/Xiaotian. (although since Xiaotian starts off human, that first part had been easy)

I've ended up with some ideas, and since I need to get them out of my system, you all get to deal with them.

Please note that this isn’t trying to stop over what Anon was going for or wanted to explore, because I am still psyched for that and to see what awesomeness they create, but they got my brain juices flowing and I was just jotting down ideas that came to me and it turned into this monstrosity. So, again, not trying to stop on anyone’s toes, I’m just incapable of stopping myself (Also this is a 2 Part post. Because I started writting and didn’t stop and you get 10 points of SWK falling and breaking Macaque here, and then The Other Post is 10 points on Xiaotian and the cannon timeline)

1. SWK stumbles on the music (we hand wave that part) and realizes he can use it to get demons to stop attacking. And since he wants to retire, he is down for this. He starts using it a lot in it's basic function of blasting it and ordering the demon to leave and go home and never do this again. And it works

2. maybe he gets a little bit suspicious as to how well it works, and tests it on some one, learning how much more it's actually doing than just turning demons away. (so now he knows he's in possession of mind control magic)

3. he has some internal crisis about this, but also he doesn't want to come out of the mostly retired state he's in, and he doesn't want to leave everyone completely defenseless if he just stops. So he starts the corruption process with justifying using it to stop bad demons.

4. SWK ends up with a situation where it's not demons that are the problem, it's wicked humans. This is... a problem. Because the way the music is now, it doesn't work on humans, and SWK can clearly see that there are evil humans just as much as there are evil demons, and since he's the hero he should help with *both*.

It's now more modern time (think late 90's ish?), and SWK isn't tech illiterate, (he had a VR set and lots of people HC he made the game Xiaotian played in that episode) so he picks up audio editing and through trial and error finds a music that can work on humans.

because he'd been forced to kill the corrupt humans from the incident above, and SWK hates that he did that. this way is better, because no one gets hurt, and the people he stops can then go on to live better lives. they just need a nudg* in the right direction, like the kind he was given so long ago.

 5. somewhere in all of this, Macaque comes back. And SWK hadn't known about his little brother being resurrected, but reincarnation is a thing, so when he hears a rumor about a six eared being, he thinks it might be that reincarnation and takes off after the rumors.

It's not a reincarnation he finds. And SWK is completely flabbergasted by the sight of his Liu Er (his fur is black instead of the white it used to be, but it was like that when the fought as well and there are more important things to think about, like the fact that his little brother who he killed who's body he buried is ALIVE. The shock of it is enough for Macaque to escape, but now SWK is on a hunt. He lost Liu Er once, he wont loose him again now that he has this second chance.

 6. SWK is basically devoting all his energy into finding his brother. But along the way, with lots on encounters and near misses, he figures out that Macaque is still angry and bitter, still in that mindset that lead to SWK putting him down before the celestials could do something worse. trap him away, make him scream in agony from pain he couldn't stop, break him into pieces, burn him alive, shatter his mind and heart SWK can't let that happen, which means he need to change Liu Er's mind.

And he wrestles with himself over this decision, eventually deciding that it's the only way this is ever going to end. (at least, the only way it ends where his brother is safe and home where he belongs) but this is a huge step from where he was before with using the music, and a skid down the slippery slope he's on

 7. problem is, the music doesn't work on SWK, so he doubts it will work on Liu Er either. So SWK stops looking for his brother and turns his attention to developing something that will work on him. Lots of self testing, and SWK knows he's getting it right when he looses time, and he knows this is reckless and dangerous, but he needs it to work. And, eventually, it does.

 8. Macaque's gotten jumpy by this point, what with the way SWK had suddenly stopped the until then relentless pursuit. It leads him to doing something stupid ie. going to FFM to spy.

He get's caught. Obviously.

But SWK is ecstatic because Liu Er came to him, came home, so deep down he must still want to be home, with him. And SWK wastes no time in forcing headphones on Macaque and starting the music before he can figure out what's going on.

At that point SWK basicaly... 'suggests' all those things he just thought, and also drills it in deep that Macaque want's to be a good person from now on.

 9. initially, that was all SWK was going to do. all he was going to allow himself to do. But Macaque is stubborn and keeps fighting against the music and needing to go under again and again, and SWK can't help but... throw things in, each time. About how things used to be. About how sweet his little brother was. About how much he missed when Liu Er would follow him about and let himself be taken care of.

And little by little, Macaque fades away and little Liu Er takes his place.

But it's such a gradual thing, that's happening over years and decades-

(I HC that LMK takes place in the future from our modern time. yes it's Lego but also they have hover-bikes and transforming vehicles and at least the original spider mech wasn't *made* with magic, just used it as a battery, so there's *time* between when SWK can start editing things vs when the show starts of all this. We're hand-waving the exact timeline, just go with it)

-SWK doesn't even realy see the corruption happening. His little brother is safe and happy and wont ever leave him again so things are good. He's the hero after all, he keeps people safe, keeps them happy, helps criminals see the light and be good, and all he wants in return is to be left alone with his little brother in their home. SWK deserves to have his perfect adorably little brother back. He's earned this. And clearly Liu Er is so much happier this way. SWK is the hero, and he knows what’s best.

 10. Time passes, SWK gets used to being able to switch things around in Liu Er's mind whenever he feels like it, and normalizes using the music for everything and anything.

Anon chilling on the precipice of madness again, and I’m so glad you liked that last ask! Truly, there is much joy to be found in discussing how much we enjoy (*cough* are dealt immense emotional damage on a daily basis by *cough*) the monkey show. Also, since I apparently can’t stop bugging you, for clarity’s sake I’m going to call myself Unhinged Anon if I submit any future asks lol. 

As always you make excellent points, and I am very normal about you bringing up the ‘MK smiling at his reflection’ thing because the motif of reflections in this show (see also: S2E5, S3E4, some others I’m probably missing, and especially S4E1) doesn’t make me even the tiniest bit insane. Nope! Not at all. But this time, it’s actually something you said in the tags that launched my marbles into the stratosphere for me to never find, because now I can’t stop thinking about how badly I want, like… a Sandy spinoff series or something. 

And I don’t mean a lore-heavy, epic adventure rich in heavy themes and conflicts like we have in the main series, just with Sandy at the center instead of MK. I want Sandy's series to be almost exclusively season one-style laid back episodes. But the good kind of laid back episodes, you know? Stuff like S1E6&7, that a lot of people dismiss, especially on a first watch, as nothing more than filler but actually serve as a subtle expansion/exploration of characters (“I also summoned monster trees with my stress, so. Should I see a doctor? We’ll worry about that later” still haunts me) and dynamics hidden under the guise of a silly little adventure with funny jokes, great animation, and fairly low stakes. 

I want to see what an appointment with Sandy’s therapist looks like, or even just the shenanigans he gets up to during those episodes where he’s mysteriously absent and only Tang seems to notice. 

I want to see Sandy teach Tang how to make tea, and maybe nerd out about those theories Sandy mentioned having about the gang's whole deal with the OG Companions.

I want to see Sandy’s endless teddy bear energy clash with Red-wants to seem intimidating but will also grab his new friends warm milk if they ask-Son. 

I want to see Wukong forced to have an extended conversation with Sandy, or really anyone from the team that isn’t MK or actively yelling at him, and getting to really see how they work off of each other. 

I want to see the secret ‘how do we help our clearly not okay friend?’ talks Mei and Sandy have behind MK’s back whenever he starts acting weird, and all the gossip that goes on during the yoga sessions they start doing together after Mei gets the Samadhi fire. 

I want to see Sandy talking with the little girl that LBD possessed, especially since something kind of similar happened to him during season 4, and accidentally becoming her new (and favorite) giant blue uncle. 

I want an episode of MK and Sandy hanging out. Just chilling on the boat, playing with Mo, going for a little walk around town until BOOM! Sandy brings MK to his unsuspecting therapist, who’s about to get the most interesting case of their career. And maybe, if we’re allowed a little angst, a discussion about how scary it is to be born with a lot of power that not only can, but will, hurt a lot of people if it isn't carefully controlled. About how they’ve tried, and failed, to avoid causing pain. About wanting to never cause pain, and how the futility of that sentiment almost outweighs the importance of trying anyways. 

And above all, I DEMAND a Pigsy-Sandy origin story! 

Anyways, this is basically just me edging ever closer to the brink of madness after you accidently inflicted No Thoughts, Only Sandy syndrome upon me with your last response. But, it's also an invitation to gush about Sandy some more, if you want, and also share anything you would want to see in a hypothetical Sandy show!

Unhinged Anon I got you, here's a motif post where I have every MK reflection in the whole show.

Imma use this ask as a spring board for one of my fav personal theories, which is this: OG Sandy, from the original jttw pilgrimage, is also our current day Sandy!

I'll probably throw this into an official theory post later, but for now I'll go into this theory underneath the cut:

First, let's start with 2x08 To Catch a Leaf, during which Sandy has several PTSD flashbacks:

So, the first one is some sort of battlefield, and the second one...

Is of Zhu Bajie?

Now, we know Pigsy has never worn an outfit like this based off of this comment in 4x05:

Pigsy: "Blue ain't really my color, but it beats looking like that monster, Zhu Ganglie."

The Pig Demon in that flashback from 2x08 HAS to be Zhu Bajie of the original jttw pilgrimage. But why would Sandy have a memory like that?

Next is the fact that while everyone else in 4x09 Roast of the Monkie Kids is compared to their past life, Sandy notably isn't.

Tang knows friendship, but unlike Tang Sanzang isn't studious.

Mei is bold and brave, but lacks Ao Lie's caution.

Pigsy like Zhu Bajie is stubborn, but he has the heart his predecessor originally lacked.

Yet this is all Subodhi has to say to Sandy:

Subdohi: "You have nothing more to learn my hilariously blue student! Another star for you!" Sandy: "Dooww thank you wise master!" Subodhi: "But! You're far too nice for your own good." Sandy: "Uh huh, you noticed!"

It's exceedingly strange that in an episode where Subodhi breaks down everyone's character arcs, Sandy is told he's all good. He has nothing more to learn, and no more character development to go through.

Unless of course...Subodhi quite simply couldn't compare Sandy to his past life because there was no past life to compare him to.

Another detail in s4 that's always intrigued me is how Sandy is brought back to himself from Sha Wujing in 4x06.

Pigsy's heartfelt speech on the legacy of their past lives not defining their current one, or how they're not monsters, doesn't work. It's instead Mo offering Sandy wholehearted love that brings Sandy back:

Which, of course Sandy has a close bond with Mo, but Pigsy's speech wasn't anything to scoff at either:

Pigsy: "No. No! Just cause we look a certain way, cause our monster ancestors were, well, monsters, none of that matters! I won't let his legacy define mine, and neither should you! Your the strongest, the biggest, the bluest guy I know! But all you've ever used those muscles for is to help people in need—your friends. That don't sound like a monster to me." (4x06 Show Me the Monster)

As far as we know, that should have been the exact thing Sandy needed to be freed from his past life, and yet it wasn't.

That would be because, at least under the confines of this theory, the guy Pigsy is saying Sandy wasn't like was indeed who Sandy used to be. Yes, Sandy has far outgrown the person who fought to establish his own place in the world, learning that "hurting others isn't a measure of one's strength". But here's the thing, who you used to be matters. Unlike Pigsy's relationship with Zhu Bajie, Sandy's relationship with who he was in the past can't as easily be written off. It's still a part of him.

There are also certain other details. like the fact that Sandy knows his way to Flower Fruit Mountain in "A Hero is Born", or how he's so knowledgeable on ancient powerful remedies like the crimson jimson weed. Of course these details could be chalked up to plot convenience—which is by no means a flaw or complaint—but I've always wondered if there was anything more to it.

But, Sandy's more laid back reaction to most things has always intrigued me, and it would re-contextualize certain scenes like this one from 2x10 in a fun way:

Pigsy: "No! What could have been so important that you'd leave MK alone to face that- that thing! You're supposed to be his mentor-"

Sandy: "ENOUGH!" "I think we should give Mr. Monkey King, a chance to explain."

(2x10 This is the End!)

Of course with this theory comes a few questions, like why Sandy didn't meet the same fate as the other pilgrims, or why he wouldn't let Sun Wukong know he was alive, or why he would bother to pretend he wasn't the OG Sha Wujing at all. And honestly? I don't have an answer to these questions!

But what I do know is that Sandy's friends are greatly important to him-

Sandy: "Hurting others isn't a measure of one's strength—took me a really long time to realize that. As long as I'm doing something to help out a friend, I don't mind what it is! I just want to be there for 'em when they need me. Cause at the end of the day, helping my friends is more important than anything else in the world!" (2x08 To Catch a Leaf)

-and losing them would affect him greatly.

Whatever happened to the og jttw crew, that could very easily be the reason Sandy was "the most dangerous, deadly, rage filled warrior [Pigsy] ever [knew]". Based off of that 2x08 Zhu Bajie flashback, Sandy could very well have watched his friend die.

But, now that Sandy has his friends back in his life? Of course he's going to do whatever he can for them!

Which would include anything from making tea to breaking his vow to never fight again.

And please for the love of god give us a Pigsy - Sandy origin story. I'm begging. WHAT IS THEIR HISTORY MAN. WHY DID PIGSY KNOW HOW TO COMMIT A JAILBREAK.

Listen, listen I have ideas for MKs arcs in my rewrite ok?

starting off with S1. S1 is MKs training arc. I think it will be a format of "Demon bull family causing trouble and MK has to go stop them" of course I'm working with infinite time unlike the show writers so i have more ability to explore this.

I think this season would set up the DB Fam solidly as villains and would also show us more of MK training to get his powers. I think the Macaque episode would happen as a middle climax episode, possibly when MK suffers a defeat from cockiness and he feels as if Wukong is not teaching him enough (the whole doing x is actually training you for y). This would give ample explanation to why Macaque so easily got to manipulate MK. He can play off his recent loss and be like "Oh i could help you if you'd like? Monkie king and I go way back so I can teach you some of his moves :)" then the key episode happens. And I think it'll be an episode or two before DBK attacks actually because absorbing ghost and being half possessed might take some getting used to, also we get build up of DBK obviously not being himself. then the finale.

S2 is gonna be MK having a pretty alright grasp on his powers. He's mostly just training now to be able to use them effectively than to learn to activate them/how to use them. I want us to actually see MK become really reliant on his powers in S2, believing that they are the only thing that makes him useful, especially after Wukong leaves him in charge. that way when he failed to fight LBD and loses his powers for S3, we can maybe have him at his lowest point confidence wise.

Then when S3 starts he has to build up his confidence and adapt to his circumstances, which slowly helps him build up his powrs again. Y'know... bringing full circle that "believe in yourself, even if it's just a smidge" scene from S1 special. Just the idea that MK's confidence is what keeps his powers from reaching their full potential and all that.

The repairs were going well, Sunny had managed to hold on until his student and friends had all left once everything was said and done. However....now the KING was back. His heart and his head unified and quiet for the first time in thousands of years. Easily using his power to fix up his mountian, inside and out...it wasnt hard. He may not be a Buddha like others of his name....but Wukong was still worshiped like one thanks to the book. Sometimes he wondered if that was enough.

He sensed the shadow enter his domain, far different from the one that he called brother. While Usiku was a veil of moonlight holding back an utter cascade of shadow... this one was not that. When himself... Wukong looked far different from his split halves. He was taller, 6 foot exactly, not at the same height as his brother but he didnt have to be. Metalic gold fur that shimmered in the light as if he was moving metal, matching golden claws tipped his fingers but he had them retracted for now. And most iconic that he alone possessed, not just red eyes but the golden suns that spun around within the scarlet. It was how all knew when it was him.

He turned his head a bit when he sensed the shadow approaching, turning around fully to face him. "....Macaque, I wasnt expecting you to actually come. Sorry about the mess.... still cleaning up after Azure."

An agitated sigh escapes through his noise, clearly annoyed at the golden simian having sensed his presence. Peeling himself out of the shade from one of the nearby trees. Only having ventured to this world to get some peace and quiet — no one knew of him here, making it easier to got unnoticed and unbothered. He had no plans to spend anytime with the sage in question. Keeping himself as guarded as even around the other. This might not be the Monkey King he knew BUT that didn't mean he was about to be friendly with him, keeping him at arm's length and interacting at the bare minimal with him — even if he tried to thwart Macaque's plan in that regard.

Though, he did raise a brow at the other — it was no secret or even surprise about the king's condition. After all, a secret is not safe between six-ears. Nothing could ever get passed his greatest assets. Having pieced together the clues and hints he managed to find that told him enough about what was going on with the other celestial monkey prior. False golden hues examining him in the moment, a small hint of curiosity settled behind them as he did.

"Eh, no big deal — "

" — not like back home there ain't a big clean up going on."

Shrugging in the moment. Honestly, it didn't surprise him in the slightest at the moment, after all these might be two different worlds BUT events seemed to play out more or less the same either way. With only slight differences to distinguish them apart from one another — sometimes small and sometimes big.

Alright so listen I’ve been thinking a LOT about the episode Macaque was introduced in and how he so effortlessly acted like a friendly mentor figure and really tricked MK into thinking he cared-

And then I found this fic blurb you wrote about Macaque tricking MK into thinking that Sun Wukong just had this spiteful vendetta against him and that got me thinking…

What if Macaque did this to almost everyone?

Macaque rolls in and turns the charm up to 11- everyone thinks he’s great. Pigsy loves his sense of humor and that he cleans up after himself, Sandy appreciates his Chill Vibes, Mei loves that he encourages her chaos (and the others love that he can pull her out of it), and he’s even got Red Son acting like putty in his hands (via exploiting his daddy issues and showing him Positive Reinforcement). Dude played the long game and it’s working out great.

Naturally, the whole time he’s waxing poetic about the Monkey King and how in love they once were, but oh no!, he made a dumb mistake in his youth and now his sweet Peaches won’t give him the time of day 🥺☹️😭 .

And again- almost everyone loves him now, and so when they see Wukong get so angry at him they just don’t understand??? He loves you so much! And you loved him too! Clearly you’re meant to be!

One day Red Son comes home and gripes to his parents about how he can’t understand why the Monkey King is being so cruel about this, how clearly Macaque was in love and how he deserves a second chance-

Only for DBK to go woah woah woah. Wait. Macaque? The Six Eared Macaque? The Six Eared Macaque who has essentially been stalking Sun Wukong ever since he broke up with him thousands of years ago and has been trying to smother every relationship Sun Wukong has had even during their relationship? That Macaque?

Yes??

And then DBK gives Red Son every dirty little detail Mac oh-so-conveniently left out, and by the end of the night Red Son feels sick in the stomach, and may or may not puke inside an unfinished Bull Bot.

So the next day he wanders up to MK and is like “hey, so, my dad told me some uh. Stuff about Macaque,” and proceeds to give the nitty gritty details, but at this point MK has drank way too much of the Macaque Kool-Aid, and is like “what? No, that can’t be true, Macaque is head over heels with the Monkey King, and the Monkey King just doesn’t know how he feels yet! Besides, your dad hates my dad teacher, so he’s probably just trying to keep them apart!”

And Red Son… well frankly Red Son would rather believe in a cute but tragic tale of star crossed lovers then the alternative, and MK is so sure of it, and his dad DOES hate the Monkey King so it would make sense for him to try and keep Sun Wukong from finding his happily ever after…

So he agrees with MK, and goes back to Not Thinking About It, even though sometimes he’ll see Macaque get this… this smile? When talking about his Sun Wukong, or hear him call him “My Sweet Peaches”, and it makes him just… just a little unsteady.

And all this time Sun Wukong is starting to feel more and more trapped. Everyone is telling him he’s wrong, that Macaque is great and he’s changed, in fact they’re damn near convinced he didn’t do anything in the first place, that their six or so months of knowing this guy trumps his thousands of years of stalking and bad blood and attempted murder-

Except one person.

Enter Tang.

Tang is a scholar, and frankly, a lot more perceptive then people give him credit for.

He’s noticed how when Macaque talks about The Great Sage he only ever used possessive phrasing, how his eyes get dark and his teeth get sharp, how his hands curl into subtle little fists behind his back when MK calls him “my teacher”, how he never said WHAT he did to Sun Wukong, and how whenever Tang is in the group, he never looks directly at him- and the one time he did, he made a face like he’d stepped into some dog shit.

He’s noticed a lot of other things too.

So after another “but he’s such a nice guy!” speech from MK, Tang slinks over. And they talk. And they decide to spring a trap.

MK is walking along with Mei, Red Son, and Macaque. They’re on an errand for Pigsy (or, MK is, Mei just wanted to hang and dragged Red Son along “against his will”, and Macaque “had some shopping he needed to get done, why don’t they show him all the best stores?”) and will meet up with him and Sandy later. Macaque wistfully mentions being young and going to a market like this with Peaches, once. MK gives him a part on the shoulder, tells him that maybe soon they’ll be able to go down this market together- and that’s when Mei who hadn’t been paying attention for the last three minutes points it out.

It’s The Great Sage himself, holding a boba cup with two straws and making a heart sign for a selfie, with his tail wrapped around Tang’s waste. Tang is holding the phone and pressing his cheek up against Sun Wukong’s, smiling as he finishes the other side of the heart, a stuffed monkey from some crane game under one arm.

The air is thick. Mei realizes she probably SHOULDN’T have pointed that out and goes to apologize at the same time MK almost says that it was wrong of Tang, selfish to ask a taken man out, but neither gets to say anything because Macaque?

Macaque screams.

He lunges at the Apparent couple, and Wukong barely gets Tang out of the way before Macaque leaves a hole where he was once standing, screaming about how he knew it, he knew that filthy priest had been touching what was his, and how dare Wukong go to anyone else, did he not learn from the last time what Macaque would do?

And as the fight goes on, and MK and Mei try to get the civilians to safety and Sandy and Pigsy show up, he doesn’t stop, he keeps saying that he should have strangled Tang the second he saw him, and after all this time Wukong should know he doesn’t do sharing-

After Wukong lured him away from the city MK shows up to help, and while he’s not strong to do any real damage to Macaque at this stage he does manage to distract him long enough for Sun Wukong to strike a finishing blow, and have Macaque retreat.

Wukong goes up to MK now that the battle is over, ruffles his hair and tells him “good job, now never do that again because what were you thinking, Macaque could have killed you-“

And then MK is crying, and he’s holding onto his shirt and clinging like a child who just found their mother at a super market, and he’s “so so so sorry, I never should have listened to him, I should have trusted you when you said he was bad news-“

And part of Wukong wants to tell him that it’s okay, that he was bound to figure it out eventually… but Wukong is tired. He warned everyone and no one believed him until they were forced to be confronted with the truth. So instead he just hugs MK, and that stops him from talking but doesn’t stop him from crying.

Things get sorted out. Sun Wukong gets an individual apology by every member of the gang. Sandy’s apology involves tea, and an offer for a supporting shoulder should he need it. Mei’s apology is shockingly formal, something her family would no doubt be proud of. She takes her mistake very seriously and doesn’t make a joke about it, but looks relieved when he smiles and pays her hair.

Pigsy sits with him on the roof of his shop. Tells him what they did to him was wrong. Says he knows it doesn’t mean much, but he’s sorry. And he’s thankful Sun Wukong had the sound mind not to listen. He says there’s always a spot for him at Pigsy’s Noodles.

Red Son is nervous, sweating buckets. Tells Sun Wukong that he knew. He knew, but chose to believe a comfortable lie instead of the truth. Maybe it’s the fact that once upon a time, Sun Wukong would have been his uncle, or maybe it’s because there’s a part of him the still considers Red Son his nephew, but The Monkey King forgives him, with a flick to the forehead and a reminder that his father isn’t as senile as he looks.

And Red Son doesn’t know it, and no one else can prove it, but maybe Demon Bull King comes to visit. And maybe their relationship mends, if only a little.

MK doesn’t apologize again after that first night, but the guilt he’s carrying has caused a literal weight on his shoulders. It takes awhile, but Wukong convinces MK not to feel guilty over Macaque, but to remember that there’s always gonna be swindlers like Macaque.

The whole thing changes. Well. The group. But they’re better off for it, and weirdly enough, somehow Sun Wukong is closer to them through it- so in a weird way, Wukong is grateful that Macaque showed up again.

After all, by cutting out Macaque he’s gained five more, better people.

And if Macaque ever comes back? Well now Sun Wukong has his own personal bodyguards .

MK was born with wings that are a size too small, he can’t fly with them

Wukong’s wings were severely damaged by the mountain, to the point where he can’t fly. (his wings are the one part of him immortality/invulnerability doesn’t heal). he normally keeps them hidden for this reason, and most people who didn’t know him pre-havoc in heaven assume he never even had wings. (he can still use his cloud sail) (MK doesn’t know about Wukong’s wings)

Macaque only has one wing. He usually uses a glamor to make it seem like he has two.

MK originally started looking up to the Monkey King because “oh hey, it’s a hero that doesn’t need wings in order to fly”

Mei has hummingbird wings. she doesn’t really need them because of the whole Dragon and Motorbike and Being Fast thing, but they’re there

...everyone elses wings are up for debate/interpretation because i honestly know jack shit about birds

Wukong’s wings alongside being unusable are in uh. not all that good condition due to how he just. basically ignores them and hides them. (he uses a glamor to keep them hidden, but he doesn’t really....like remembering how damaged his wings are, so he doesn’t take care of them.)

Red Son only finds out that MK can’t fly when he knocks the other off a building and has to save him (....this happens in Bad Weather.)

the Sign Saga

basically theres a giant billboard within the city that people keep smacking into while flying (even Wukong smacked into it while cloud sailing once) and its seemingly indestructible. the sign also happens to have a drawing of Wukong on it with the slogan “the sky is a safe place to fly”

....the reason everyone keeps smacking into the sign is because a while back MK accidentally cursed it when he was upset over not being able to fly (and at the time was in possession of a cursed object).

Red Son finds out about this after he slammed into the sign hard enough he dislocated his wing and had to go to MK for help. (....this would be before the New Years special, so before Red Son’s redemption arc. have fun with that)

Red Son: what do you mean you cursed the sign???? MK: look, it wasn’t my fault, Red Son: YOU LITERALLY JUST SAID THAT YOU CURSED IT

Red Son smacks MK on the head using his uninjured wing because “you’re dumb Noodle Boy, I can’t believe you accidentally started the Sign Curse”

Wukong also hates the sign. for multiple reasons really, including the fact he did not get permission for it to be made (his lawyer has tried suing the company that put it up multiple times) but mostly because the sign having his face on it and saying “the sky is a safe place to fly” when he himself can’t fly with his wings is.....yeah. kinda upsetting.

LBD calls MK a “flightless bird”.....

“Oh poor little flightless bird who’s eyes are blinded by the sun... you were always destined to fall.”

as said earlier, MK doesn’t know about Wukong’s wings, so when Macaque shows Wukong as having wings in Shadow Play....well MK is understandably confused. 

“But Monkey King doesn’t have wings!” “Doesn’t have- ha! Oh, bud, exactly how much has your so called mentor kept hidden from you?”

when LBD starts trying to turn MK to stone in the season 2 finale, she managed to get his wings. they ache and have lost some of their colour for some extent of time after.

on the ship, the others demand Wukong remove his glamors so that they can treat his injuries, and. this is how they find out about Wukong’s wings

said wings currently have some bloodied bandages wrapped around them, because whatever got the rest of him also got his wings. not to mention the fact his wings were already in horrible condition, so-

they lecture him about proper wing care

remember how Macaque only has one wing?

that wasn’t always the case

Wukong, at this point in time, thinks that he’s the one who did it, and is utterly horrified by it. this may or may not be why he won’t use the full extent of his powers

.....he’s not actually the one who did it

theres a reason Macaque knew about LBD

*(casually projects my fear of heights onto Macaque)*

i will not be elaborating on that other than the fact that when he lost his wing the fight did not occur on solid ground

in this AU when LBD possesses someone, their wings become skeletal

this isn’t necessarily canon to this AU, but if she were to possess Macaque, a ghostly see through wing would appear where his missing one is

...on a completely different note though. once everyone is on the ship some of them have to carry Macaque and Wukong around when they need to go someplace that requires flying (since, yknow, Wukong lost his ability to cloud sail)

Wukong resigns himself to it after 5 minutes but Macaque complains and struggles so much (fear of heights kicking in) that the only person who can safely carry him is Sandy

MK got a hoverboard so he doesn’t have to be carried. (Wukong wanted to use the hoverboard too but he Sucked Ass at it and none of them are taking the chance of him falling off)

Red Son and Mei both take MK for flights sometimes. why? because its fun, thats why.

Happy Birthday Winter!

Hey @winterpower98 it's your birthday! I really hope you enjoy this, I know I had a ton of fun writing it for you! Actor AU is one of my favorite AUs you've made and coming back to play around with it again was a blast and a half!

Painter MK cackled, taking the brushes filled with bright pink paint into his fists.

“Yes, yes!” He exclaimed, brushing them against his cheeks and bringing another to run up the center of his face. “The art is-OW! OW, THE ART IS IN MY EYE!”

“Cut!” The director yelled, bringing the entire film production to a halt in an instant. “Xiaotian, what happened?”

The young actor dropped the paintbrushes into the hands of a stage worker to rushed over to help him, one hand covering his right eye as he tried to keep himself from laughing. “I think some of it splashed when I waved the brush at my face. I guess the art really IS-”

“Don’t say it,” Heshang said from the other side of the set, doing his best not to join his co-star in laughter.

“-seeping into my pores!”

The entire cast and crew groaned as Xiaotian cackled again, with a few added ows, before another stage hand came by with a bottle of water.

~3…2…1~

“Uh…” Xiaojiao pulled, attempting to pull the prop sword from above her head out of the wall only to be met with… a lot more resistance than should probably be there. “UH…? It’s stuck?”

She stood, attempting to pull it out normally only to be met with just as much resistance.

“It’s stuck!” She laughed, out, bracing a foot on the wall with no change.

“Let me try,” General Ironclad, or rather Red in the costume of General Ironclad for the episode, offered, attempting to do the same with the exact same result as his co-star. “What did you use to hold this in place? Cement!?”

“It should have only been stuck in with force!” A stage hand yelled as Xiaotian and Heshang joined in, both failing to pull the sword out from the false wall and Heshang nearly toppling over backwards with his additional costume pieces.

“Whoever stuck that in there needs to be moved to making sure the safety equipment stays connected!” Xiaotian offered, watching as even more people tried to remove the sword. “That is not coming out.”

Heshang held Mo in his arms, waltzing around the set as he waited for places to be called for with the shockingly content feline in his arms.

~3…2…1~

“You are selling beautiful vegetables today?” Pigsy said, leaning over the the display to give an awkward smile to the disguised Spider Queen.

Tang looked over the produce from where he knelt, looking back up at his companion with a concerned and confused look. “Are you… a-are-PFT-FUCK.”

Everyone on set burst into laughter as Tang did, both of his fellow actors holding back from laughing themselves.

“Why is it this line!?” Tang yelled in frustration as he continued laughing. “It’s not a hard line! I wrote this line! Why do I keep laughing at the last word!?”

“Maybe if Ganglie wasn’t making goo-goo eyes at me you’d keep straight face,” Zhi-Zhu Jing managed to get out through her laughter.

“That’d be the only thing straight about me.”

Dicky Cheung, or the actual Sun Wukong disguised as a human actor in full costume of himself, took a running leap and jumped onto the counter of Pigsy’s noodles, sliding to a perfect stop with a wink toward the camera.

“MK, there’s something I wanted to tell you…” Mei said, looking at MK with sparkles in her eyes before snickering. “Stop looking at me like that, it’s hard enough to keep a straight face during this scene!”

“Sorry!” Xiaotian yelled to the camera. “I can’t help it! How are Jin and Yin this wrong about these two in the show?”

“Himbos!” was the shouted answer from Tang at the other end of the set.

~3…2…1~

“One of the rare talents that no one knew the great Sun Wukong possessed…” Xiaojiao said ominously, camera panning over to Mr. Cheung in full costume. “Surprisingly good peach juggling!”

“Gotta keep myself occupied somehow!” The actor laughed out, catching two peaches in either hand while the last one was caught perfectly in his mouth to the applause of everyone watching.

“Thanks for the Key los-AH!”

Red flung his arms wildly, key flying into the air as Tie Shan rushed forward and caught him just before he face planted into the ground.

“Mine!” Mr. Cheung yelled as he caught the key mid air and rushed through the frame.

“YOU’RE NOT EVEN IN THIS EPISODE!”

~3…2…1~

“Thank you… for giving me all o-ooh, whoa!” Lui Er Mihou, or unbeknownst to nearly all Six-Eared Macaque in disguise much the same way as Sun Wukong was, yelped as the cable that was supposed to gently raise him and make him look like he was floating yoinked him as good 4 feet off the ground way too fast. “That’s too much power!”

“SORRY!” The line operator shouted, fiddling with the controls. “Someone loaded the weight setting for Xiaotian into your line instead of yours.”

“I already feel bad enough treating him like garbage and beating him up in this role, this is just rubbing salt in the wound,” Liu Er muttered, leaning back and swinging limply much to the amusement of everyone who couldn’t hear him before raising his voice. “When will my beloved friend Sun Wukong come to rescue me?”

“SPEAK MY NAME AND I SHALL APPEAR!”

Liu Er yelped in surprise as Mr. Cheung rushed in and grabbed him from beneath to hold him bridal style with a shit eating grin. He couldn't help the flush on his cheeks in response.

“HOW DO YOU KEEP SHOWING UP IN SHOTS WHEN YOU AREN’T SUPPOSED TO BE THERE YET!?” The director yelled with more than a little amusement in his voice despite the disruption.

~3…2…1~

“You!” DBK said, rounding on Red Son. “You have brought me nothing but failure! Time and time again! I keep telling you I… shit, I can’t remember the next line when you look that sad, I am so sorry.”

“Nothing but disappointment?” Red offered helpfully, immediately breaking out of his downcast somber gaze to the floor with a wide smile.

“It is scary how fast you get in and out of character sometimes, kid,” Niu Mowang laughed out, clearly resisting the urge to ruffle the younger actor’s hair lest he ruin the styling job that took far too long every time they got dressed.

The White Bone Spirit stood at the entrance to the Silken Web Cave, looking at the camera before far too much time passed from when she was supposed to say he line. She moon walked backwards out of the frame without changing her expression one bit as the other actors devolved into cackles.

~3…2…1~

“The Year of the Spider starts tonight!” Spider Queen proclaimed from her high vantage point before she muttered something under her breathe, narrowing her gaze and then looking off to the side. “Or next year ‘cause I don’t remember my line.”

~3…2…1~

Huntsman slowly lowered into frame, upside down and gripping the rigging holding him up like Spiderman.

~3…2…1~

“Oh yeah?” Sun Wukong said, appearing in frame as he walked down the wall MK was embedded in. He grabbed his staff, yanking it out of the wall and jumped down and smacked the wall with it.

… only for it to go through the wall once again and crack it. Or, rather, the false wall that was on a tilted angle to make it look like he was talking down it, rather than a heavily slanted floor.

“I’m sorry!” Mr. Cheung yelled, looking at the damage he caused. “I must have hit at weak spot!”

He hoped no one noticed that when MK offered to get the prop staff for this shot and put it into the wall… he grabbed the real one by accident.

Nui Mowang held the little bird that was Wukong’s transformation stand in for one of the final scenes, gently petting the little head with a big goofy smile on his face.

The entire cast sat around on various travel tables right outside the small Lunar New Year Festival set they had set up, various extras that had answered the open invitation for the shoot going about and getting the free food that was available at the functional stalls provided by the catering they had hired.

It was an odd sight to see Red Son and Spider Queen and Sun Wukong and everyone else sitting around together, but Liu Er Mihou being there outside of his Macaque costume broke the illusion a little bit.

It was the final day of shooting for the season 2 opening special to Monkie Kid, Revenge of the Spider Queen, and everyone was there. Even people who didn’t have to come in wanted to give a temporary farewell to Tie Shan, Nui Mowang, and Red before season 2 proper began shooting. There was still a chance they could bebcalled in for bit roles, the scripts weren’t entirely finished yet, but as far as anyone knew the Demon Bull Family wasn’t going to be returning properly any time soon.

Maybe in season 3, Tang had teased, holding the begun scripts for that in his little tablet away from prying eyes. And they were always welcome to help out in bit roles, background characters or voice over or to use their other talents to work other jobs that were needed around the set.

But even before then it would be a while.

And so that’s how Red found himself sandwiched between Long Xiaojiao and Qi Xiaotian, with the newly added member of their quartet in her full White Bone Spirit costume hanging over his shoulder to watch the compilation that Xiaojiao had expertly edited on her phone for them all.

“The director gave me permission to use whatever I wanted and I though that… maybe we could all have it for ourselves,” Xiaojiao offered, pulling up the wireless transfer option on her phone. “To watch when we miss each other being on set together. I know we’re going to probably be back together with Red Son eventually! But…”

“I’ll miss shooting with you too,” Red said smiling softly as he pulled out his own phone to accept the file. “Hopefully Mr. Tang isn’t just teasing us about season 3.”
