#I miss being a friend group and not an rpg party

Hey, I saw your discussion about the Hellfire club conflict and thought I would give my take as someone who was in club for a RPG campaign and a friendship group DnD thing as well.
In club based RPG they tend to have a certain number of players who can play each week (basically how many the GM/DM can handle or difficulty based) and you sign up in advance of the session. I was a fairly regular player and still missed major lore events since only so many could play. I would assume Hellfire worked similarly to this based on the fact Hellfire had more members than we saw (in the photo) and that Erica was let in so easily. I think if I had signed up for a session then couldn't make it they would get a fill for me but if it was something where I needed to be there they might change things that would happen.
However in my friend group DnD they would only have someone else double and play my character on non major sessions.
The show weirdly frames it like the problem is doing sports and trying to be cool in a way that's kinda weird. It should be more of a conflict of them both having an important club based event on the same day and wanting the other to attend. That makes more sense. In being non neutral in the narrative they make Lucas look better and everyone else look worse (even though they are siding against Lucas, some of the audience won't see sports as a threat the way they want us to).
They make what should be a tragic conflict of interests into a Us versus Them rhetoric regarding nerds and jocks. Steve didn't quit sports for his redemption arc. They already established Jock not equal to bad. It doesn't work.
Oh interesting! Thank you for bringing that up. I still think that would be incredibly weird because wouldn't they have to explain what has happened to everyone who wasn't there at the last/last few sessions? But I guess my experience has been heavy rp fun time/dramas than fighting rp? So maybe it would work better if the kind of DM you have puts more emphasis on battle than protecting annoying Prince's or accidentally meeting ones estranged parents haha.
My uni dnd club just has multiple campaigns happening I think but I've never actually gotten a chance to join (busy with uni) so maybe that is how it goes! I appreciate this insight, that's really interesting.
Yeah I agree, by using the narrative to frame it as Lucas betraying the party or nerddom or whatever it just makes me think everyone is being a pretentious jerk to him for having a non dnd hobby. It could have been a sad thing where he's like oh guys... I wish I could come play DND and I wish you could come watch me play...it's the finale AND the championship game... This blows. and Dustin and Mike could have gone "okay man we'll take really good notes and find your sub for you! Get Steve or your parents to video tape the game, I'll set up my double cassette player to record the radio on a timer too. Oh! Maybe we could record the session? That way even if we can't all be there for both, we can still know what happens!" Just!! Show that they care about each other!
The show's insistence on nerd v jock dichotomy and of it being good v bad is frustrating. You're right Steve showed that! He changed in S1 and in S2 we see him playing basketball! He was captain of the swim team that year apparently too. And he has already changed to be better. But the show often forgets Steve is actually a complex character or can be more than comic relief or that he is also a human who needs medical assistance when hurt so maybe we shouldn't be surprised that they forget he disproves their own point of jocks=bad. Sea of Stars Initial Thoughts
I started on Sea of Stars last night. Quick assorted thoughts (bulleted with asterisks because tumblr autoformats my preferred > bullets):
*I was actually really bored for the first hour or so. I don't like extended childhood flashbacks all that much, and they teased us with the adult protagonists before sending us through the flashback/montage of all time. I got why we needed to see Valere and Zale and Garl enter into the forbidden cave and have Garl get hurt. But afterwards, I feel like a good film editor could've cut the sequence where Valere and Zale start training, start sewing, continue sewing, continue training, train some more, say their solstice warrior vows, complete their final training test, and walk through the first dungeon before flashing 5 minutes forward to the tutorial at the start of the game. My beef is not with the extended academy sequence, but with having the game start with them as adults if it's gonna flash back that quickly for that long. **BUT I can at least see what they were going for because Garl seems to be the emotional center of the game thus far, and that has real narrative potential. It frames the story so that we're introduced to Valere+Zale, they're very open about the guilt and regrets of the incident that led to Garl losing his eye, and then we see how it happened and how they never saw him for ten years since. But then the cookie jar+note shows up midway through the montage, and it's pretty clear he doesn't hold a grudge and still cares for them, and they still care for him. **Then he shows up in modern times as a jolly giant with cooking skills and a sincere desire to come along and help. Valere and Zale are actually hesitant to let him come, without any adults present to tell them no, because they know how dangerous it will be. But he sticks it out and makes his point that the cooking and beefy physique make him an asset, and the three friends are reunited with another huge hug. It's very sweet, but it also highlights that Garl, despite not being "chosen", has something that makes him an indispensable part of the group. Dude's got a great attitude and is keeping himself in the battle party through years of hard work not unlike what Valere and Zale experienced in the opening hour. **Like, between the Archivist and Elder Mist's vague statements about slight diversions from the initial timeline/Garl's unique potential of bringing "it" back, I wouldn't be surprised if he was the secret sauce that saves the world when all is said and done. And if that happens, 11/10 writing.
*Combat is so-so so far. The combined mechanics of timed hits/breaks are hit or miss in my book. I always feel like I'm leaving stuff on the table, and it feels like a more button-mash heavy version of Octopath Traveler's break/boost system without the corresponding ability to autopilot vs mobs because attention is always needed to block enemy attacks. It feels mechanically like a game that considered various criticisms of turn-based RPGs and ended up with mechanics that might attempt to appeal to people who didn't like the genre to begin with. That said, only 90 minutes in and ready to reconsider my opinion as new info comes to light.
*I wanted to hold off on Crosscode comparisons, despite the fact that both are heavy on isometric platforming elements and hidden object-heavy environments. But then the Forbidden Cave literally had a Laser Bridge!

storyteller synthesis inter-party dynamics!!!! WOOHOOOO
so. for those who don't know, im making a little cyberpunk rpg called storyteller synthesis!! ive already said a bit about the individual party members, but i haven’t really mentioned their interpersonal dynamics yet, so here's that post!!
masterpost with all other info is here :3
Tumblr media
(from left to right, this is sylvie, v, xenon, and kori!!)
its a little long, so i put it under the cut!! :D
so sylvie is a pretty typical silent protagonist type. they want to be friends with everyone else in the party and have the usual rpg protag affinity for breaking random stuff. she thinks v is a little weird but they trust her, she appreciates xenon's rebelliousness, and she likes hanging out and being silly with kori :] there's really not much to her because she's supposed to be what is literally just a vessel for the player to experience the story, even in-universe
v has a real "i hate it here when can i go home" vibe tbh. she does not actively want to participate in the story, except to get it over with and get the original sylvie back instead of protagonist sylvie. she tries to stay somewhat detached. she misses original sylvie so hanging out with protag is kind of bittersweet for her, and she sometimes forgets its not the same person she knew as a kid. she likes that xenon is pretty quiet and thinks he's easy to hang out with. she only grabbed kori for the team because she was the fight club champion and that seemed useful, but she gets kind of annoyed with her general happy-go-lucky attitude. v is pretty edgy asdfdhgkljl
xenon is the mysterious coolguy of the group. talks the least out of everyone. he is very closed and defensive when sylvie and v first meet him, but he opens up little by little as they explain the situation to him. by the time they meet kori, they've opened up a lot more already. he likes talking to sylvie because she's what he views as "mysterious" and worth investigating, but he also respects her a lot as a person and wants to help her out. thinks v is kind of a weirdo?? but he also understands her feelings after she explains her situation. SUPER HIGH respect level for kori, weirdly enough. despite her general vibe of not caring and having fun, she's an excellent fighter so she deserves to be respected. unexpected joke buddy for her.
kori is so silly!!! she has trauma too but she ignores it and is silly instead!! usually the one to make jokes about the situations the party finds themselves in. enjoys saying BONK as she hits things with her hammer. very much a performer, in a way similar to a tv personality. she's the last party member so she unfortunately gets less screen time, but she's pretty talkative so that kind of makes up for it. thinks that fighting is the quickest way to prove someone's worth (wow, biased much?) but realizes there's other ways... eventually. enjoys hanging out with sylvie cause they can bounce jokes off them and get a response, unlike v. she still thinks its kinda funny to bother v, but knows when to stop. xenon is her joke buddy :3 they're friends :33

Culex and Paper Mario
The original Secret Boss from MarioRPG, is also the sprite for the remake version. Which is really cool. But the themes between Mario world and FF world are interesting.
Culex represents an Final Fantasy style God-Boss, who has collected all four of the elemental crystals (The FF worlds variant of the Seven Stars)
This, is foreshadowing of the enemy MarioRPG must battle against in his titular game. This Mario's last name is of course: RPG. The villain of the game is Smithy, a liquid metal God-Boss from Terminator, who mass produced sentient weapons, including, probably; RPGs.
In FF the mirror image of Mario is a group of heros who collect (or interface with) 4 crystals which control the essence of the world itself, and use their power to defeat an evil world-ending God bent on its destruction.
This *secret boss* while secret to the player, I think is canon. He represents what happens if Mario and party fail to stop smithy.
But more interestingly... He is a two-dimensional being in what is depicted as a 3D world. This intersection between 2D and 3D is the premise behind Paper Mario.
<aside>It probably isn't, it probably arose from some devs playing with 2D Mario sprites in a 3D engine.</aside>
Paper Mario has a similar shack to MarioRPG, doesn't adventure with his brother Paper Luigi like your typical Mario Bro. Mario RPG doesn't even have a brother in this game. Not unless you count the Mario&Luigi games as canon to the RPG game.
God damn it, I can still hear Culex's Battle Music in my head to this day.
The Paper Mario games often play as a repeat of MarioRPG. As if it's a story told to future generations. The Star Sprites, the star Kids, ever elaborated upon. But what is missing in these future stories is that Bowser is the bad guy.
Bowser is often always kidnapping peach, so I'm not saying he's a good guy. However, in MarioRPG, they did put aside their differences for the good of the world.
And yet... Paper Mario retells the story of MarioRPG, as if the two had never been friends. Just like every Super Mario Brothers game from 3 onward. A stage play, a retelling. As if it were ... Dare I say it: JUST A GAME.
It's as if the story tellers had forgotten who the real villain of MarioRPG was. Is this on purpose? Did Bowser try to make himself appear more formidable? Are the story tellers just really biased against Bowser? Or is it some other force?
Or; Is it The world Culex created? Culex doesn't die after his boss battle, he just returns home. Is it possible, in trying to recreate his own fallen world, he brought the souls of his people forth to the original 3D Mario World?
"I like this extra dimension. I think I'll take it." - Culex Probably

~Join the Party by J.T. Machinima~
There was an ugly pause in the group. As they let Vanessa go, a woman stressed and hindered by a hypnotic amnesia, Gregory felt bad. He regretted all the mean names he’d called her. It was Vanny being a psycho, not her real self.
And when Michael sprained her wrist... Given it was for self-defense, but still.
Gregory leaned against his father, staring at the door along with his family in pity. They'd have to fight this unaware woman again, he was certain. The thought only made his hate for William Afton grow.
“What time is it? Is there still time to find the last game?” Charlie asked, her urge to save Vanessa as well as Gregory swelling with the sadness in her chest.
Freddy blinked a few times, pulling up his internal clock. “It is 2:47 pm. We have time to look around, although I insist on getting Gregory some more food and water in the near future.”
“Of course; we can’t have Gregory crashing on us!” Michael flashed the boy a grin, playfully nudging his arm before ushering the group to start moving forward. He wanted to save Vanessa as much as everyone else. He might not have gotten to the kids in time, but at least they could try to save her along with Gregory.
“Are there any other arcades, Freddy? If that’s where the first two were found, maybe the next game is in a different one, too.” Michael grimaced, shoving his hands in his pockets. “Hopefully there’s only one more of these things…”
The worst thing would be to miss out on some consoles, making this whole mission for naught.
“There are two other, smaller arcade locations within the Pizzaplex,” Freddy replied, giving Gregory one last big squeeze before setting him down in favor of holding his hand. “One is in Bonnie Bowl and the other is in the Daycare.”
“I'm starving. I need like, a whole pizza,” Gregory said, willing to forget the uncomfortable feeling it brought when thinking on Vanessa's situation. The immortal serial killer piloting a bunny suit with a hobby for murdering children continued to haunt Gregory's thoughts, even in normal conversation. His hand slid into Freddy's palm and began for the door.
“What's the pizza topping tonight? I wanna know if the Hawaiian still tastes the same.” Charlie hoped to move on from the awkwardness of knowing something was officially wrong with Vanessa.
Just fill the uncomfortable burden of knowledge with entertaining the kid, Charlie thought, watching as Gregory's face turned up at the suggestion.
“Whaaaat? Who actually gets pineapple on their pizza?” he inquired, disturbed by the idea. Charlie sighed.
“You have much to learn, kiddo. The pineapple calms down the spicy pepperoni they use. And the ham's there just because ham is good,” she explained as if the anatomy of the Hawaiian pizza was a hard-hitting science.
“In some ways, Charlie, you were always wise beyond your years,” Michael said, patting her back as they squeezed through the door and emerged into the West Arcade proper.
“To answer your question, since the Pizzaplex is not currently open for guests, there are no specials today,” Freddy informed the group. Before their crestfallen faces could stick, he quickly added with a grin: “Which simply means that you can make whatever pizza you would like!”
“Whatever we'd like?” Michael repeated, sparing a look behind him to lock eyes with Gregory. They grinned in unison, already in unspoken agreement to use this power to their full advantage.
Freddy seemed to realize the potential monsters he'd unleashed, for he quickly followed up his earlier proclamation. “Within reason, of course—please do not make yourselves sick...”
“So... No ultimate everything pizza?” Gregory asked, hoping that he and his older brother had the same idea.
He envisioned it clearly. A sturdy deep-dish with every possible combination of crust plus all toppings. Charlie's stomach felt sick just thinking about such a monster grease-ball of a meal—the saddest part being that she had no stomach to feel queasy with.
“No way you'd eat all of that,” Charlie told him, unknowingly goading Gregory to want the mythical pizza even further.
“Hey, I still haven't felt any effects from that scary burrito meat earlier; I could always help,” Michael pointed out, fully on board with encouraging the Frankenstein-pizza. Never mind the fact that he'd only eaten a tiny bit of meat, and this meal would be far more damaging both physically and psychologically... but that only made him more eager to try it.
“The staff may get upset if they see you both messing up the kitchen to get to all the toppings,” Freddy said, trying to think of a way to dissuade the boys without straight up saying no. However, when Michael puffed up his chest, Freddy already knew he was about to use his “Afton bloodline” excuse to get away with yet another thing. As Mike opened his mouth to speak, Freddy relented slightly. “Alright, how about this—you can make an ultimate everything pizza, as long as you also make one that is actually edible.”
“Freddy, do you doubt my cooking skills?” Mike asked, putting on an exaggerated sad face.
“It is not your cooking I am doubting, Michael—it is your ability to legitimately consume this dish.” Freddy couldn't help but smile just a bit as Mike snickered, his obvious happiness both a rare and welcome sight.
“Is it bad if I doubt both?” Charlie remarked, having a strong suspicion Mike was about to bite off more than he could chew in more ways than one.
“You know you're gonna want some...,” Gregory said, egging her on. Still, he was happy his ursine dad would let them get away with making what he’d assume to be a record-breaking pie.
“We can go to the food court—it is the closest place to get pizza,” Freddy said, as the group descended the staircase that would take them to the Arcade exit. Instead of heading straight for the elevator, he continued towards the dance floor. “I would like to say goodbye to Music Man first, however.”
“Heeeey, you guys!” the huge animatronic said upon catching sight of the comparatively tiny group. He waved a back arm, as his front hands were currently occupied. “How're you liking the music?!”
“The 80s songs are much appreciated,” Michael replied, hands in his pockets as he stared up at the DJ. He couldn't help a dark point of anxiety burrowing into the back of his mind when he thought of how terrifying this thing would be if it was infected like all the others... Thankfully, they'd managed to avoid the West Arcade so far during night shift, and he hoped the trend continued through tonight.
The group could see how anxious he was. Charlie and Gregory couldn’t exactly blame Michael. If the DJ wanted to, he could just crush them and be done with it. For now, he was probably the chillest of the personalities inhabiting the Mega Pizzaplex. Charlie threw a wave at the guy—she tried not to think about tonight, if he’d go and try to find them now that he knew there was a child and two human adults waiting to be smushed or pulled apart.
“That’s a choice mixtape you got!” Charlie complimented regardless. “We’re gonna take the little guy to get something to eat! Don’t wait up for us.”
“Thanks for the tunes, DJ!” Gregory called to him after Charlie. He chose to stick by Freddy, as his guardian made him feel comforted as he spoke to new people, regardless of whether this artificial personality was made to be the most relaxed guy in the room. He had to agree with Mike that Music Man’s size was formidable.
“See you guys laaaaateeeeer!” the DJ called, waving every limb not currently occupied as the group walked off the dance floor.
Before long they were exiting the elevator into the main atrium, making a beeline for a now-working escalator to take them right to the food court. There were a few staff milling around, though most were long-past lunch break and had returned to work. This served the group just fine, as Michael prompted Gregory to use an access pass to slip into the back kitchens. There was a lone S.T.A.F.F. bot in a chef’s outfit meandering near the doorway, and though it tracked the group’s movements it didn’t actively try to talk to them or call for security.
Which was good, because if it did, Mike would’ve had to tamper with more company property so they could make their pizza concoction.
“Okay, let’s get this done!” he said cheerfully, excited by the thought of this monster they were about to create. He hoisted Gregory up and placed the boy on his hip, holding him securely with one arm and grinning down at his mildly confused face.
“Three hands are better than two when making this thing, right? Besides, you don’t want to have to drag a stool all around the room to see over the counters, do you?” Michael’s grin shifted into one of brotherly mirth at the teasing dig to Gregory’s height. “Just tell me what we need and I’ll grab it, then you can put as much on the pizza as your heart desires.”
Gregory never thought he was short until he met Michael Afton in all his android glory, towering over the poor vertically challenged lad. Though he wouldn’t admit it, having Mike hold him up while observing the pizza toppings was easier than dragging around a stool.
“First, we’re going to need the pepperoni. Classic,” Gregory began, starting the long list of the weird Frankenstein pie that he envisioned in his mind.
It ended up becoming a savory, meat and vegetable medley on one side. Then on the other, the Hawaiian pizza for Charlie—Gregory decided to add some hot sauce on her side after realizing she was craving something spicy. What he and Michael ended up concocting was a messy pile. They had only stopped adding toppings when they realized they still needed to see some of the thick layer of cheese.
“This thing would kill an old person if you fed it to them,” Gregory said in a half amused, half concerned tone.
“Good thing we’re all so young and spry,” Michael joked, though the slight crease in his brow betrayed his concern about the potential hospital visit Gregory might need if he consumed too much of this monstrosity. As if reading his mind, Freddy placed gentle hands on each of the boys’ shoulders.
“How about you each take one bite and see how you feel?” the bear suggested, unsure of it would be worse for Gregory’s human stomach or Michael’s mechanical one. While they’d been making their ultimate pizza, Freddy busied himself with crafting a standard cheese and pepperoni so his son could actually have something to eat.
Michael nodded, attempting to dislodge a piece of the meat and veggie side which proved nearly impossible due to the sheer amount of toppings. He managed eventually, handing Gregory a plate with the not-so-surprisingly heavy slice. After getting one for himself and a Hawaiian-themed one for Charlie, Mike held his piece up with a determined light in his eyes. “On the count of three, we take a bite. One… two… three.”
At Michael's command, Gregory and Charlie timed their first bites of pizza to his word. Attempting to get every individual piece of meat and vegetable inside his mouth, Gregory had to take a pretty gigantic bite. This took a while to chew, but that single piece had been a meal by itself.
As she managed to taste and savor the flavor of the customized pie, Charlie could feel so many memories coming back with just the taste. For a moment, it was 1980. She, Michael, and Evan were in the kitchen of the dinner making their own monstrosity and eating it out of the way of the chefs and wait staff. They hadn't changed the recipe at all, and everything tasted just as it did back in that wonderful, wholesome year.
Charlie hadn't even registered the warm tears that flowed from the corners of her eyes as she indulged in her food. They freely streamed down her face even as she went in for a second bite.
“Perfect...,” she complimented the chefs, dabbing the corners of her mouth.
Michael’s mind had traveled down a similar road, back to a day where Lizzie and Sammy were playing at friends’ houses and left their siblings under the care of their fathers. William and Henry were busy, giving the trio a perfect opportunity to slip into the kitchen and make the most abominable pizza they could. William was the one to catch them and had chided them for using so many ingredients for their silly experiment, although when he’d subsequently taken a bite of their creation with a shimmer of laughter in his eyes and claiming that they couldn’t let everything go to waste, Michael knew they weren’t in real trouble.
He didn’t notice his own salty tears until he instinctively moved to wipe them away, his gaze shifting to Gregory as he did so.
And there was that damn trauma coming back to haunt him yet again—the boy’s image flickered before Michael’s eyes, shifting between the brother he once knew and the one he had now. “God… why did I—”
Why did I become such an asshole? Mike finished the sentence in his head, covering his mouth with a hand and turning away. He looked like he was about to throw up by the way his eyes scrunched tight, though he really just wanted to scream. If only he hadn’t played that stupid prank, it could be Evan by his side right now…
“Michael…” Freddy’s tone was soft, though the man sill flinched as the bear touched his shoulder. They stared at each other for a moment before Freddy held out his arms, gesturing for the man to come close. He might not fully understand what Michael was going through, but he could still be there for him.
Mike let out a short, barking laugh, not missing the irony of Freddy being the one to comfort him from these memories… but it only took a few seconds for him to fall into the bear’s arms and hug him tight.
Charlie could tell Michael had been thinking the same as her from the glimmer in his eyes—about the way their families used to be. She was still angry, bitter at the life stolen from her. It was a tragic accident what had happened to Evan. Then that poison spread from Evan’s death and into the lives of the Emilys.
She was infected by that poison, too. And so she could never relent, vengeful forever until William’s tainted fountain ran dry. He would pay for making her best and nearly her only friend’s childhood a living hell. She wanted retribution for all those lost souls, including her own.
And justice for Gregory, who had been exploited and traumatized beyond what was reasonable for a child in two nights.
Gregory had felt the melancholy, leaning into Charlie and attempting to lighten the mood. “Wow, pizza’s that good?”
Charlie slung an arm around his shoulder and rubbed his arm twice—then squeezed him into a close hug.
“Just haven’t had pizza like this in a while. Thanks, kiddo.” She excused them both, silently apologizing for the tears that fell off her jaw and onto Gregory’s wavy head of hair.
It wasn't long before Michael shimmied out of Freddy's grasp. The bear wanted to hold onto him longer, as if he knew this short hug wasn't nearly enough to make up for whatever horrific thing Mike was thinking of, but they both knew they couldn't cling forever. They were on a mission, after all.
“Thanks, Freddy,” Michael said quietly, wiping away the remnants of tears with one hand as he gripped the bear’s arm with the other. Before Freddy could reply, Mike set a smile on his face and turned to his siblings. Seeing them in an embrace, he playfully fell onto them and wrapped his arms around Charlie in a bear hug, effectively sandwiching Gregory in the middle. “Yeah that pizza's definitely in my favorites list now!”
“This is almost exactly like the secret recipe pizza Mike and I used to make, you know,” Charlie told their new friends, laughing when Gregory started squirming.
“That's nice—Mike, you're squishing meee!” he lamented, unable to wiggle free from the cage that he and Charlie created with their arms.
Then, behind them came the sudden sound of radio static. It came in and out, breathing almost before a familiar voice rang out. “THAT LOOKS LIKE FUN...”
When Charlie whipped her head around, she was surprised to see none other than Ennard. They'd snuck in so quietly and appeared to have wrapped their limbs in random, ripped up carpet segments—clashing patterns and colors that made them even more of an eyesore. Charlie jumped in place and held onto Gregory tighter as she let out a briefly frightened yelp.
Freddy instinctively moved to the group's side, trying to push Gregory and Charlie behind himself as he stared at the mass of wires and carpet pieces. He recognized the voice as the one he'd briefly heard from the vents, although the sight of Ennard was certainly... something.
Freddy had many, many questions, but he doubted any of them would be answered now. He could feel Michael tense up like a startled cat on his other side, having let go of Charlie and Gregory the second the static entered the room to better protect his family.
“...What the hell have you been up to?” Michael asked slowly, his eyes roaming over the multicolored, 80s-style carpet pieces. However, the answer occurred to him before Ennard could reply, and Mike sighed heavily and pinched the bridge of his nose. “Oh—you're trying to be quieter. For god's sake...”
“Michael...?” Freddy began questioningly, although he honestly wasn't sure what he wanted to ask. This thing sure was intimidating, the fabric flooring only adding to the eeriness as their entire body swayed. A few tendrils moved of their own accord, and Freddy swore one was trying to inch closer to Michael.
Seeing everyone's expressions of wary confusion, Mike realized Freddy hadn't been told what to expect when facing this thing. Not to mention the last time Gregory saw Ennard was in the dark basement, lurking in the shadows as it literally ripped an animatronic apart in front of the boy's eyes. Ennard was quite different in the comparatively bright kitchen lighting.
Michael grimaced, eyes locked onto the amalgamation as he reassured the trio: “Don't worry, you'll be fine... What do you want, Ennard? And why are you out during dayshift?!”
As the group relaxed, Ennard stared at them with a fixed gaze from every visible eye. They were unmoving except for the metal and wires just barely inside Michael's comfort zone. How they twitched in longing to be near him again... The carpet was a nice substitute, though it certainly didn't feel as safe as Michael's own flesh.
“I WAS TOLD TO FOLLOW...,” they reminded, heterochromatic eyes staring holes through the group.
Gregory wasn't afraid of clowns, but he didn't realize Ennard was that huge. Once Ennard caught him looking, they became somewhat standoffish. Aloof, they turned their back to Gregory ever so slightly as if hiding from him.
“WE ARE QUIET NOW... WHAT ARE YOU GUYS UP TO…?” they inquired, looking around the group briefly.
“Eating pizza.” Gregory held out the gooey mess. “Do you want a slice?”
He regretted the offer slightly as Ennard moved in a hauntingly jarring way towards them, body jerking and ropey as strong metal moving under the carpet. The monstrous form barely visible under the thick 80's patterns.
“Absolutely not!” Michael and Freddy exclaimed in unison, swiftly putting themselves in-between Gregory and the approaching animatronic. The pair shared a look, silently in agreement that they did not want to see what happened if whatever made up Ennard's body got gunked up with cheesy grease and toppings.
“Ennard's, ah... components seem to be more like mine as opposed to Michael and Charlie's, so I do not think it wise for them to eat real food,” Freddy explained, trying to be as gentle as possible with his words. Ennard was clearly sentient and aware, but Freddy couldn't help but feel like they'd appreciate hearing the reasoning nonetheless since they seemed quite eager to participate in the group's activities.
And he also didn't want Michael to have another mental break when trying to speak to the amalgamation after he'd just recovered from the last one. By the way Mike's left eye was twitching slightly as he pushed Gregory even further behind him, Freddy could tell he wasn't far off from snapping.
Ennard had stopped mid-walk, the former child-entrapping animatronic eyeing both the slice and Gregory with unknown intent. After focusing their vision, Ennard's gaze landed on Freddy and Michael.
“THAT... MAKES... SENSE—SENSE—SENSE...” Their voice box glitched out, causing them to smack their own chest in frustration to fix the involuntary stutter.
“Ennard?” Charlie would ask, finding the clown face suddenly snapping in her direction to gaze down at her. “Have you been watching us this whole time?” She attempted to make friendly conversation all while trying to navigate and avoid the stalker-like behavior they portrayed. Ennard would shake their head, the motions more jagged than any animatronic the others had seen to date.
“NOT JUST YOU... WATCHING ALL... OBSERVING... HIM...” Ennard had replied honestly, a hint of malice dripping in multiple layers of voice boxes.
“'Him?' Do you mean... William?” Freddy asked tentatively, eyes narrowed in question. He didn't like the dark tone coming from that voice box and hoped it was directed towards the same entity his group was after.
Freddy caught Michael nodding out of the corner of his eye, though he kept his gaze fixed on Ennard, still unsure whether they could truly trust this thing yet. He'd caught the strange way it looked at Gregory earlier and didn't want to take any chances... even if it had saved the boy last night.
“Ennard hates him, too; I can at least tell you that,” Michael confirmed, one of the rare facts he was absolutely sure about regarding the amalgamation. Mike crossed his arms over his chest, observing the familiar way Ennard swayed. The movement seemed a little more cumbersome because of all the carpeting, but it was still just as unnerving at it'd always been. Raising a brow, Michael asked: “Have you learned anything from these observations? Maybe something he's plotting, or... Oh, anything would help, really.”
He seemed to deflate slightly, false confidence punctured by the stark reality of how little they knew of what William's actual goal was besides “get his family back.” They didn't even know where he was right now...
Gregory attempted to look at Ennard, observing their odd posturing. Both Freddy and Michael seemed to be aware of Ennard being much more dangerous than the others. If they wanted to, Gregory was positive that Ennard could and would tear through them all without hesitation. Their last run-in with Michael had left the man shaking while talking to the robot amalgamate.
Ennard looked around the room, eyelids darting and flicking closed, making shutter sounds as they simulated blinking for the boy's comfort.
“BUILDING... REPAIRING HIMSELF... SCREAMING. THROWING THINGS...” they listed off, thinking of all the things they heard and saw William doing during their recon work. “WILLIAM... STAYING BE-BELOW. UNSURE WHERE—DON’T W-W-WANT TO GET CLOSE, OR RISK BEING SPOTTED… HIDEOUT ABANDONED NOW...”
That made Michael perk up again.
“His hideout? The one in Fazerblast?” he questioned, and upon receiving a jerking nod Michael looked to the others with a hesitant grin. “If he’s gone… maybe we should check it out?”
“Are you sure it is empty?” Freddy asked, placing a hand on Mike's forearm to still his excitement. His gaze was still fixed to Ennard, wanting to make sure they would be safe before trying something so risky. The animatronic was strange, but it really didn't seem to mean them any harm...
Ennard shifted their weight, unnaturally leaning with hips jutting out at a sharp degree while answering Freddy.
“THE PAST NIGHT AND DAY... CLEAR OF RABBIT—S...” they replied. Ennard took a step back then, realigning their frame in a more natural standing position that made them look even taller. “NO ONE IN SIGHT.”
Gregory could see Ennard’s gaze drifting back to Michael, as if knowing the man would have the final say in whether they would go or not. He knew better than anyone that Ennard was capable of lying, after all.
Ennard sure was a liar... Or at least, they used to be. Back when Michael first encountered the amalgamation all those years ago, it'd lured him into the scooping room under false pretenses, and Mike had stupidly walked right into the trap.
However, in the Pizzaplex, Ennard seemed different. They'd been nothing but helpful to Mike and his friends, showing no sign of wanting to climb into any of their bodies or otherwise destroy them despite the unnerving stares and tendency to grasp at Michael's ankles. Hell, Ennard even saved him and Gregory from Roxy—a far cry from the last time Mike had been so close to the thing.
“...I trust them—on this, at least,” Michael said in a voice that was barely audible. Freddy finally turned to him, searching the man's face for any sign of doubt. Upon finding nothing but serious determination, he nodded.
“Then to the hideout we shall go,” the bear agreed. He looked back at Ennard, finally giving the mass of carpeted wires a genuine Glamrock Freddy smile. “Thank you for all of your help, Ennard. It is much appreciated.”
It was hard to tell what was going on inside Ennard’s head as they stared down the bear. Their demeanor seeming surprised, bashful even as Freddy thanked them. They belted out a quick rush of nervous static. Then, after collapsing their body slightly, wormed their way back into the vents without another word.
They weren’t used to the kinder treatments. In fact, they were far too comfortable with Michael yelling at them—it was almost safe in its familiarity, in a twisted sort of way. The sudden change in attitude towards the hulking robot had left them rather shy in response.
“That guy has issues,” Gregory said, less in judgmental and more out of pity for the monster as soon as he felt they were out of earshot.
“Gregory, you have no idea,” Michael murmured in a slightly strained voice, running a hand absently through the boy's wavy brown locks as he stared into the vent.
“Well, I suppose we should put our search for the Princess Quest games on hold temporarily?” Freddy asked, looking between the trio. He still wore a smile, happy that they'd made some progress with their surprisingly helpful stalker and their search for William in one go.
“Yeah; who knows, maybe we'll find a clue about them in the hideout,” Michael suggested with a shrug. He slipped his hand into Gregory's, wanting to keep track of his brother personally until his latent paranoia towards Ennard subsided.
“Wait—did you have enough food, superstar?” Freddy questioned as the group started towards the door. Mike resisted the urge to roll his eyes, wanting to move on but understanding the bear's parental concern.
Gregory had just registered he was still hanging onto the heavy slice of pizza. Now that it cooled, its toppings were fixed in place by the thick layer of cheese. Gregory nodded and told his ursine father: “I’ll eat this slice on the way.”
Gregory was more tired than anything. He needed a nap before the night shift began. They still needed to play the next installment of Princess Quest—and hopefully collect those tickets for Charlie. Still he remained confused at their collective reactions to Ennard when DJ Music Man was so widely accepted. He decided for now not to question it, as his caretakers had done a good job at keeping him safe thus far.
“Let’s get a move on, then!” Charlie told the group, seemingly trying to force a positive outlook before sneaking into the Fazerblast security office. They would need the good vibes, Charlie felt. Who knew what terrible things sat in Vanny’s personal space.
“Hey, Freddy,” Michael began, sidling up to the bear as the group moved as one to the door. “The last time Gregory and I went to Fazerblast, we got stuck—I literally had to pry the elevator open to get us out because we couldn’t finish the game.” He grimaced at the memories. “Is there any way you can make that not happen?”
“You wish for me to override the attraction itself?” Freddy questioned, and Michael nodded. Freddy shook his head, giving him an apologetic smile. “Unfortunately, I do not have access to those types of override protocols. Perhaps a staff member might be able to help?”
“Ugh… the only staff we know is Sophie.” Michael glanced at Charlie, wanting her opinion on the matter. “I don’t know if we want to chance the extra attention… but I also don’t want to get stuck again. What do you think, Charlie?”
Charlie bit at the inside of her lip in thought, weighing the options in her head.
“You said you had to pry open the elevator, right? Tell Sophie there’s damage done to the internal doors and that you need to turn the attraction off,” she replied with a quick snap of her fingers. That had happened when Michael was in his Foxy get-up, so she could only imagine what that hook and claw had done to the door to get it to open. The likelihood of the elevator being busted to hell were high.
“Perfect—hand over that walkie talkie?” Michael took the device after Charlie unclipped it from her belt just as the group emerged into the main atrium. They walked at a steady pace, not wanting to seem in a rush even though they were all anxious to get to their destination.
“Hello, Sophie? Come in, please; this is Mr. Afton,” Michael said, pressing the button on the walkie to speak into the static.
There was a crackle of static for a moment before Sophie responded with a simple: “Hi, Sir—do you need something?”
“Yes, actually—we’re heading over to Fazerblast. I’ve been informed there’s damage to one of the interior elevator doors.” Michael paused just long enough for the words to sink in, but not giving the guard time to freak out. “I’d like to assess the issue, and in order to do that can you turn the attraction off while my group is inside?”
“Hooo boy,” Sophie replied, followed by a cacophony of crackles. Likely her hanging up before cursing to her presumed boss. After a second of hesitation, her voice clicked back onto the feed. “I'll meet you there, Mr. Afton. Over!”
She knew no one else would volunteer to help out the admins. Most of the staff hadn't even met any of the owners besides Sammy Emily before, so working around the hired family members would be a nightmare for most. Though, to be fair Sophie hadn’t exactly heard mention of these mysterious heirs before today either.
“Freddy?” Charlie said, giving the bear a gentle nudge. “You and Gregory should hang out of sight for a little. Sophie might ask why we're bringing you both into a work area…”
“Good point,” Freddy agreed, holding out a paw for Gregory to grasp. He gazed around the atrium, looking for a place close by but still out of the way. His eyes settled on one of the many brightly lit signs on the third floor and his smile widened. “Would you like to try a round of bowling, superstar?”
Michael followed Freddy’s sightline to Bonnie Bowl. It wouldn’t take long for Freddy and Gregory to sneak down to the hideout from there if necessary. Of course it’d be ideal if they could prevent Gregory from returning to one of the places that traumatized him the most this weekend.
The more Michael followed this train of thought, the more set on it he became.
“I think that’s a good option,” he chimed in before Gregory could respond, cracking a tiny smile. “Didn’t you say there was an arcade up there, Freddy? You guys can see if there’s a Princess Quest console while Charlie and I do our thing in Fazerblast. We’ll let you know if we need you, don’t worry—otherwise, we can just meet you in the bowling alley when we’re done.”
Gregory had always wanted to try out bowling. Even if they didn't get the chance to play a full game, it'd be fun to unwind and get to do something with just Freddy for a change. Unfortunately, Michael mentioning Princess Quest brought him back to the current reality. He'd have to worry about having fun some other time. Right now, Vanessa needed them to find the source of her mind control. Hopefully it meant defeating these badly coded video games.
“Let's go check it out!” Gregory said, a good attitude about it regardless. He pulled on the bear’s paw, as if he had the strength to sway where Freddy walked.
Freddy chuckled quietly at Gregory’s obvious excitement, playing into it by pretending like the boy was somehow able to tug the half-ton metal bear along as if he were nothing more than a stuffed toy. As he pitched forward slightly to give the impression of being knocked off-balance by Gregory’s sheer strength, Freddy spared a glance over his shoulder and waved to Michael and Charlie with his free hand.
“…Damn,” Michael murmured once Freddy and Gregory were out of earshot in a tone of wistfulness. “I know Freddy’s designed to be good with kids, but… he’s really good with Gregory.” He spared a glance at Charlie then, raising an eyebrow to match his subtle smirk. “Good thing we’ve got a new, Pizzaplex-escaping body waiting for him, huh?”
“It's almost like he was programmed to be a dad—I don’t think all of them would act like Freddy,” Charlie agreed. That bear was truly one of a kind.
Perhaps knowing the presence of a human soul had given Freddy some awareness. That was the theory that Charlie would stick with, at least. Michael's own feelings seemed to imprint deeply into whatever learning feature had been installed inside the newest rendition of Fazbear. The already protective and nurturing side of Freddy had been amped up, and the line between what came from Freddy’s original code and Mike’s supernatural influence was now thoroughly blurred
“I still can't believe how lucky last weekend’s been for us overall!” Charlie remarked further. The fact they had a chance of carrying out their plans and possibly putting William away for good had her expectations sky high.
It really was a shame. Bonnie used to be such a cool character, but Charlie couldn't look at that rabbit the same. Not after all the things she’d seen William do with that innocent guise. She kept her vision focused ahead now, walking besides Michael with purpose.
“If it turns out to be a trap—” Charlie murmured as she leaned into him. “—and it turns out your Dad's there… I'll get behind him, then you push him down the stairs.”
“Deal,” Mike agreed, flipping a hand palm-up so Charlie could give him a low-five. Lifting his hand higher, Michael watched his fist clench and unclench a few times. “I wonder how much strength we really have. I know your dad said it should match a normal animatronic’s, but—”
Michael’s musing was cut short when he spotted Sophie hurrying towards them at rapid speed.  Mike straightened his back and gave the guard a slight nod of acknowledgement.
To Sophie, the pair of them looked nothing short of professional. Ms. Emily, in Sophie's opinion, was nice. Eccentric, but nice nonetheless. Mr. Afton was… different. Still just as strange as Ms. Emily, but with a frighteningly flattened affect. Regardless, he treated Sophie with respect and she had no reason to hate either of them.
Yet that didn’t stop Sophie from growing very curious at their antics. The day guard waved to them, seeing that they’d gotten changed straight into more merchandise from one of the many store-outposts.
“Mr. Afton; Ms. Emily,” Sophie acknowledged once the two came to stand outside the attraction. She held the door for them both, offering them to walk inside the lift before her. “I just have to unlock the main breaker. Shouldn't take long. Honestly, I'm really glad you both want to work on this. Our mechanics suddenly found themselves swamped right now.”
“Oh?” Michael questioned, putting on a tone of detached interest. “Have you heard anything about the missing animatronics? Last time we spoke, you said some of the others weren’t responding to their manual call buttons.”
On one hand Michael hoped they’d stay missing, if only for the fact that the sooner they were found, the sooner the techs would start fixing them up again. After all the effort they’d gone through to decommission them, Mike didn’t want the Pizzaplex staff to unintentionally make the robots a threat again.
But that begged another, more pressing question: if no one knew where the Glamrocks had gone… then where the hell were they?
Even though Roxy had been ripped to pieces, Ennard left her limbs in plain sight. If someone peered down that newly-created hole in the track—which Michael suspected a bunch of staff were frantically trying to assess and repair this very moment—they’d surely catch sight of the dismembered wolf.
The thought that they could’ve somehow still gotten up on their own or been snatched away by William while Mike and his family recovered was enough to set Michael’s nerves on edge. He tried to keep the emotions contained, keeping up the illusion of cool confidence despite the hard set of his jaw as his teeth clenched together. Hopefully Sophie would take this as him simply being annoyed at the prospect of valuable company assets being MIA.
Sophie avoided Mr. Afton's gaze, attempting to fix her tie in a casual manner before answering. This only made her looked even more exacerbated than she did already.
“We, uh... technically found one of them. It wasn’t one we were exactly looking for right now, though,” Sophie told them cryptically. “And then right after they found him, it just disappeared again. So... We're working on that. It's a work in progress. Everyone seems to be more worried about the structural damage to the raceway.”
Sophie sighed, placing a hand on her hip and shaking her head with a look of utter confusion. “Plus all that carpet suddenly went missing from the East Arcade? I feel like things are kind of coming unraveled, sir, if I'm honest...”
It was becoming increasingly obvious to Michael and Charlie what was happening as Sophie left out details to protect them from what they assumed to be managerial anger.
“I wouldn't worry about things like the carpet,” Michael said after a moment. The more he could keep them away from anything to do with Ennard, the better. “There's clearly more important issues to focus on, like that damage to the raceway.” He narrowed his eyes, internally grateful for the topic to snag onto. “Thank god it's under renovation anyway... if something was able to break the tarmac that easily, it belies some serious safety concerns.”
Under Sammy's guidance, in many ways the Pizzaplex was a safer place than any previous Fazbear establishment—but there was always room for improvement. After a brief pause, Mike asked: “You said the animatronic staff found disappeared? Who, exactly, was that?”
He was almost positive he knew the identity, but if it suddenly vanished like the Glamrocks... Well, Michael didn't quite know what to do with that information.
Sophie seemed to be similar in Charlie, in that they wore their emotions on their sleeves quite easily. Taking on a more distressed demeanor Sophie chuckled, looking away. Despite her wide grin, she was uncomfortable thinking about it. Again it was always some damn rabbit causing trouble...
“Oh, just the uh... The decommissioned b... bunny,” Sophie replied, fighting with the last word to exit her mouth. “It was odd—my team found him and told me he needed to be fixed. Said he’d been missing for a while, but no one talked about it anymore. I just wanted to leave the stupid thing back in storage but... You know policy. Making sure the animatronics are accounted for, even when the active ones are bigger priority. Anyway—”
The lift doors began to slide back open and Sophie dawdled inside, searching for the employee terminal to access the attraction controls. “—he just up and hopped away, I guess.”
Sophie didn't really seem like the type to become annoyed fast, yet speaking about the rabbit made her sound bitter and afraid. Like Vanessa, almost.
Oh, that was much worse than Michael expected. His mouth had slowly fallen open as Sophie spoke, unable to keep his prideful Afton demeanor as she talked so blatantly about the man-turned-rabbit animatronic they were on a mission to destroy.
Of course it was William. It always had to be William.
Michael snapped his mouth shut with an audible click as the elevator doors opened, staring down at Sophie with a mixture of guilty relief. The staff that found Will had no idea how close they'd come to losing everything. Clearly he wanted to keep a low profile, hence his temporarily immobile state, but if he'd had other plans—
“We'll keep an eye out for the rabbit.” Michael spoke quickly, wanting to put the topic at rest but also try and avoid the staff actively chasing his psychotic father. “Just... tell the others not to worry about him. There's still a few animatronics awake and functioning to appropriate standards, right? No need to worry about ones that have already been taken out of the lineup.”
Not to mention how much detailing Bonnie still needed. Cracks all over his outer casing, covered in a thin layer of dirt like he’d been crawling around the basement.
“If you say so, sir.” Sophie tucked an errant curl behind her ear. “I just hope we can find everyone in time for opening. I know Mr. Emily wants the Glamrocks together by Monday... I don't know who's going to tell him it's just not possible.”
It was probably going to be her. The staff just loved to put the harder admin interactions on Sophie, given that she was head of security during the day. Approaching the terminal, she swiped her card into a reader at the desk which logged her in immediately.
“Don't worry about that, either. I'll tell Sammy everything,” Charlie reassured, placing a hand on Sophie’s shoulder and squeezing. “Just do us a favor and leave Bonnie alone. He was decommissioned for a good reason.”
Huh. It was normal to be scared of Mr. Afton, though now there was something in Ms. Emily's tone that Sophie just didn't trust.
“Uh... Is that why you both decided to come in this weekend?” Sophie asked, feeling her throat run dry as the pair stared at her. “I-I just didn't expect to meet you both under such stressful circumstances.”
“Mr. Emily just asked us to check in on some things,” Michael replied smoothly, having regained his composure after Charlie added her two cents. He certainly appreciated the backup, which he was sure she knew. Mike shook his head, letting out another sigh.
“Admittedly we were unaware of the depth of the problems around here, but... we are here to help.” He offered Sophie a rare, muted smile. “Try not to stress yourself out too much, alright? You've done as good a job as you can so far.”
Michael wished he could alleviate all her tension by telling her to go home and take the weekend off, for the woman was clearly losing her mind with every new incident. But unfortunately she was becoming invaluable to his group as well—even if she didn't know it. Still, Mike could at least take off a bit of immediate pressure. Clicking his tongue in annoyance, he muttered: “It's really the night guard I'd like to speak to—everything seems to happen on her shift...”
It was now time for an inopportune blush to spread across Sophie’s face at the genuine compliment to her work capabilities. Sophie didn't receive much praise, nor did she seek it out. This was probably why it affected her so much as she focused her gaze on the computer screen.
“I'm really worried about Vanessa, sir...” She wasn’t quite defending the position Ness had put everyone in over the weekend, but Sophie cared about the grumpy night guard in a detached, logical way. “I told her she should just stay home. Heal from her injuries, you know? She's still determined to fix everything from her shift.”
“We told her the same thing. Vanessa’s given us all the run-around,” Charlie interjected. It wasn't Sophie's fault that Vanessa wanted to stay another night. “It is what it is at this point; if she wants to stay, so be it.”
As Charlie spoke, Sophie's expression grew from concern to annoyance.
“Guh...” She groaned, squinting at the screen. “The console has a password on it... Might be logged up in the security office? I can control the doors without it, but not much else.”
“Char—Ms. Emily and I will go,” Michael said quickly, shooting Charlie a look. He realized they didn't have Gregory's handy stash of access badges, but hopefully they wouldn't need one—and if they did, hopefully Sophie would readily offer hers. Looking to said guard, Michael told her: “We'll be back shortly. Walkie us if you manage to figure out the password or if anything happens, alright?”
He probably didn't need to include that last part, for surely it just added to everyone's paranoia. Without giving Sophie a chance to protest, Mike walked out of the room and gestured for Charlie to follow behind.
The day guard couldn't place the odd feeling she got around the two of them. Sophie wanted to offer them her assistance, thought simultaneously just wanted to be rid of them.
“Uh—of course, sir,” Sophie relented, watching as Samuel’s apparent daughter followed Mr. Afton obediently through the maze and towards the security tower steps.
Charlie's fear for Sophie’s safety was growing now. William knew people were looking for him, and he didn't think twice about killing children. Why not random adults, too?
At least Sophie was immediately and quite vocally perturbed by the Glam-rabbit. Charlie couldn't imagine her willingly going near Bonnie and disobeying their direct orders to leave William alone.
“Let's hurry. I don't have a great feeling about this, Michael...,” Charlie whispered, sticking close to him as she felt bad about leaving the day guard by herself within the belly of William's lair.
“You're telling me...,” Michael muttered, though his snapping tone wasn't meant for Charlie. He hated leaving Sophie alone just as much as she did, though if Ennard claimed the hideout was empty during the day, he reasoned the guard was relatively safe.
Michael absently looked around, in his steadily-increasing worry almost considering asking the amalgamation to keep an eye on poor, innocent Sophie—although Mike quickly scrapped that idea for many reasons. Besides, even if he did want to talk to Ennard, the ceilings and walls were far too high; he'd have to shout to be heard in the vents, and that would certainly not be a good look for his sanity.
Soon enough, the pair were at the door to the security office at the top of the tower. Michael peered inside, though it was pretty dark and hard to make out most things. He thought he could see a small cot in the corner, as well as a standard security desk, chair, and monitors, and—
“No way,” he breathed, pressing his hands to the glass as he fixated on the glowing screen of an arcade console in the middle of the room. The title “Princess Quest III” was emblazoned on the top, shining like a beacon of hope that cut through Michael and Charlie's bleak mood.
Charlie nudged Michael's shoulder, pushing him slightly as she pointed to the box with her other hand. “It was here this whole time!”
Right under their noses, here sat the final installment of William's glitched game. Just like last time, as they approached the arcade box a credit blinked onto the screen. It beckoned them to play it, calling their names with silent persuasion. If they could win this game, Vanessa may be saved yet.
“Come on—let's beat this thing fast. Sophie won't like knowing we’re up here playing video games,” Charlie remarked, pulling Michael by the arm to start the session of Princess Quest.
Michael didn't bother verbally responding, instead placing his hands on the control panel and starting the game. Thank god he'd watched Gregory play the first two, because this one was even worse than the others—both in terms of difficulty and glitches. Though the console acted like it wanted them to play, Michael was having a hell of a time getting the titular Princess out of danger. He wished Gregory was here with them, as Michael had to begrudgingly admit that the kid was more skilled than him at this particular game series. Steeling himself, Mike narrowed his area of focus to the little square screen in front of him. He wasn't going to stop until he won—no matter how long it took.

If you want to try to ramble about the Mother series, I'd love to hear what you have to say
Okay I
Cannot at all guarantee this will be coherent it's very hard for me to put some of my thoughts on this series into words, especially as omitting a lot of context
Not gonna even try and make this spoiler-free bc the spoilers are what I love most abt it, so heads up on that. This may end up having follow-up posts depending on how long it gets, but for now I'm mainly gonna talk about the characters as they're what I love most about the series. We'll be here forever if I try to explain the plots too
Also, Mother is a surprisingly dark series past all the nonsensical whimsy. There's themes of bullying, death and child neglect mentioned in this, you've been warned.
The Mother series is very unique, as it is (overall) an RPG set in the modern day. 198X for Mother 1, 199X for Mother 2/Earthbound, and an unknown time for Mother 3. On top of fighting things like aliens and robots, you also fight crows, gas pumps and hippies. Weird time, but a fun time too.
The protagonist of Mother 1 is Ninten, who's mission is to stop an invasion from the alien Giegue, as well as recover the pieces of a song for a woman called Queen Mary in the fantasy world of Magicant. Ninten doesn't get a huge amount of development due to being a silent protagonist, but I find the types of psychic abilities he learns to be indicative of his personality: he learns mainly defense and protective abilities, he wants to keep his loved ones safe most of all. He is also one of the first canonically disabled protagonists in a video game, being asthmatic.
The first friend Ninten meets on his quest is Lloyd, a timid but intelligent boy with a love for rockets and other gadgets. Unfortunately he's the victim of severe bullying from his schoolmates, to the point he spends his free time in a garbage can on the school roof to avoid them. Befriending Lloyd is a key moment in Mother 1: he is the only companion absolutely mandatory to complete the game, and when he joins you the overworld music changes from the song "Pollyanna" to the very appropriately named "Bein' Friends".
Ninten's next friend is Ana, who joins the party after the boys return her hat to her in the hopes of finding her missing mother. Ana isn't very physically strong, but her psychic abilities are extremely powerful, enough that she's been having dreams of Ninten before she even met him. She and Ninten harbor feelings for each other, shown late in the game when they dance together in a mountain cabin.
There's also Teddy, in his late teens/early twenties, leader of the local criminal gang, who joins the group to avenge the deaths of his parents. He kicks Lloyd out of the team, believing him to be too weak, but Lloyd later saves them from a robot attack by destroying it with a tank. Teddy's severely injured and has to stay behind to recover, but grows to respect Lloyd as a result. In the original release it was implied he died of his injuries, but in rereleases it's confirmed he recovered and started over, leaving his criminal past and becoming a club singer.
After recovering the pieces of Queen Mary's song, it's revealed that she is Maria, Ninten's great-grandmother. Magicant is the last remaining ghost of her consciousness, and before it disappears she reveals she and her husband, George, had been abducted years ago to become Giegue's surrogate parents. The song you've been learning was the lullaby she sung to him as a baby. When you finally confront Giegue, it's a very unconventional final boss battle. You don't kill him, you don't even physically beat him; you sing the lullaby, reminding him of his mother Maria. He even offers to let Ninten come with his before he leaves, acknowledging him as family. He swears to return someday, though.
Mother 2/Earthbound is simultaneously a remake and sequel of the first game, and it's protagonists are noticeably similar to their predecessors. Ness is the new main protagonist, and like Ninten is mostly silent. He loves his family dearly, to the point that if he doesn't phone home regularly he will become homesick. Unlike Ninten, who practically stumbled into his journey, Ness and his friends are prophesised to save the world from Giegue (now known as Giygas). Ness must also learn a song, but this time from visiting powerfu energy spots across the world.
The first friend Ness meets is Paula. Much like Ana, she is physically weak but extremely powerful psychically. She's been kidnapped by a cult, and after her rescue (and reuniting briefly with her parents), joins Ness on his journey. Her telepathic abilities are invaluable in meeting with the next friend, Jeff.
Jeff Andonuts is from overseas, living at a boarding school. The only member of the group without PSI, he more than makes up with it with his technological prowess. After hearing Paula's call for help, he sets off to meet up with them. His best friend, Tony (one of the first canonical gay characters in gaming!), helps him out of the school, and Jeff heads to his father's science lab in hopes he can help him get to Ness and Paula over the ocean.
Dr. Andonuts is... absent, to put it tactfully, despite only living the other side of the lake from Jeff's boarding school, he hasn't seen his son in ten years. Jeff even corrects himself whenever he calls him Dad.
Extra note: the novelisation is... not my favourite, but Jeff is physically disabled in this version, using leg braces and later prostheses although how he gets them is a bit yikes. He also uses an off-roader wheelchair in one chapter, and personally this is smth I've adopted as my headcanon
The final member of the party is Prince Pu (who received a much more unfortunate name in translation that I refuse to call him :]), from the Eastern kingdom of Dalaam. He goes through some... absolutely nightmare-inducing meditative training before joining the group, and if you want to see what I mean look up "earthbound mu training" on youtube.
Mother 3's main protagonist is Lucas, although aside from the prologue you don't actually get to play as him for quite a while. Lucas is initially a shy but still very happy boy, but after the brutal death of his mother and disappearance of his twin brother Claus, and the subsequent neglect from his father Flint, who spends all his time searching for Claus, Lucas becomes a shell of his former self. Yet he has a signature PSI ability: PK Love. And at the end of the game, when offered to restore or destroy the world, despite having experienced nothing but loss and loneliness for years, Lucas chooses to love the world that hurt him.
Kumatora is a so-called "princess", but by choice she doesn't really live up to the role. She continues the trend of incredibly skilled PSI-wielding girls, but unlike her predecessors is a rebellious tomboy.
Duster is the successor of Lloyd and Jeff as the group's non-psychic member, but the similarities end there. Duster's a grown man, raised as a thief by his father Wess. Unfortunately, Wess holds the title of Fucking Terrible Parent. He's verbally abusive to Duster after he makes an honest mistake, and the game all but outright states he permanently disabled his son by overworking him. Duster walks with a limp, a fact that is mentioned in-game and was even animated into his walking animation, a detail that I appreciate a lot as someone who also walks with a limp.
There's also Boney, Lucas's loyal dog. He accompanies Lucas throughout his journey, remaining a constant and reliable companion.
Then there's Pokey Minch, Ness's neighbour from Earthbound. There's... honestly so much to talk about with this character, so I'm gonna save it for a post dedicated solely to him. He's surprisingly complex and quite a tragic character despite the antagonistic (and.. almost irredeemable) role he plays.
This post really doesn't do these characters justice, but they mean so much to me. The games are all noticeably more challenging before you meet your friends, because struggling alone is tough. All three groups are quite diverse and a lot of them come from difficult backgrounds, but they're all treated quite respectfully. They send some important messages, especially for the time the games were released; disabled people can still be strong, girls can be as skilled as boys (if not more so), you don't need special abilities to be important.

The Worst Expedition Team of All Time (seriously, they wasted the funding on this one)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Beta-tested a tabletop rpg system! Drew me and my friends’ ocs while we were playing the one-shot hehe (and yes my friend chose to play a sentient turnip…he was the comic relief in our expedition but fUCK…..HIS BACKSTORY WAS THE MOST GUT-WRENCHING!!!!! It made us all emotional,,,like there was a part in that one-shot where it kind of became a group therapy session HHAHAHA it was cool!)
Will edit this post once I get permission from my friend if I can share his game here :^D !!
That campaign was literally the definition of: it’s not about the destination it’s the journey/found family trope 🥺
(also there was this one part where the entire party beat this npc up, checked to see if he’s still alive and found out that he is, then proceeded to beat him up again to the point of unconsciousness HAHAHHA)
Sherry (my friend’s oc) is like one of our main dps and this mf threw Winters (my oc) straight towards an enemy HAJAHAJAHA but I had activated the misdirection tag and missed the npc but the dm was like, “Sherry missed the target but the sight of this one random human being flown towards him out of nowhere, the stranger got distracted to the point of him saying “What the fuck?” audibly.” While distracted, we made Saga (another friend’s oc) tackle him to the ground HAHAHAH
I’ll try to draw the adventures we had hehe :DD we even had a romantic anime trope happen between me and my friend’s oc which just,,,naturally happened HASJSHSJSHS I WAS SHOOKT

My thoughts on Baldur's Gate 3
This might just be the best RPG game ever created, and whatever you say game devs this should be a new benchmark for RPG game development! Let me touch down on some great, less great and just general experiences and thoughts around playing through this game ^_^
What they did amazing
This game feels like it took the best parts of Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, Dragon Age Origins, 2 and Inquisition, Divinity Original Sin and Witcher 3 and just made the optimal game ever.
The character creator - amazing. All the choices you need without being overly complicated. Lots of beautiful moving hair. Does not make you create your character in the green light of the Fade (looking at you DAI). 10/10.
The intro is epic and highly immersive, beautiful, scary, intense and a great introduction to the story.
The graphics and environments are STUNNING and immersive. The devs said they wanted to create an experience that is like the one you have with a group of friends going on a pen and paper adventure when it comes to environment epicness and magical story element, and they have.
The companions are insanely well written and voiced, and most importantly their personal quests are intrisincally linked to the main story in a way that almost no other of those games I listed above managed. And the multitude of characters you can enlist and get to know is perfectly diverse, and it gives you great choice when it comes to how you want your playthrough and party to be.
Going back to Dragon Age Origins and voicing everyone else but not the main character to instead focus on a multitude of choices, hooray and yes! It's wonderful!
Characters aren't gender bound in their sexuality, as a bi pan gamer I thank you from the bottom of my heart that you enabled us to create and write our own romance stories instead of making out genders the most important part of the storytelling of the game.
The music is epic and amazing, tear inducing <3 Just wow, queue on Spotify in repeat mood.
The books are great; they are never too long like they can be in Elder Scrolls games but just the perfect addon to the rest of the content to deepen the lore.
Outfits and dyes; the diversity is through the roof in all the good ways and it's not all armor bikini. Like, you can have raunchy underwear and bikini dress if you want to (late game, for gold) but there is all kinds of armor and outfits for all kinds of characters and needs and it's just so in line with the lore of the world. Thank you!
What I would have liked improved
A way for us to actually hear the companions banter even though we are not exactly over them with the camera. I have missed at least 80% of the banter because you have to zoom out to create a path to walk for them. The party banter needs it's own volume setting and it needs to be heard no matter where your camera is.
Inventory management; more bags with autosort, and much better "Sort by type" sorting (the dyes where all over the place o.O) and and less times the sorting bugs out. Also the possibility to sort according to the unsual themes in the vendor screen. Perhaps even a subcategory of buttons for "armor, weapons, potions, books" and so on.
Better warnings when you are about to cast another concentration skill while already concentrating on something.
There was one NPC I honestly disliked very much that I felt broke the immersion and it is the bloated bartender son in Act 2. It was full on modern Resident Evil vibes and not at all a very Dungeons & Dragons type of character. Nope nope. That whole area was just weird, far too modern in comparison to the rest of the game.
A photo mode, naturally.
Bugs that screwed with my game
A bug that makes the character portraits go black or weird if you do not have your graphical settings on ultra for everything, please fix that one Larian!
Shadowhearts friend disappeared, rip.
A romance scene was deleted due to too many long rest cutscenes getting stacked on each other, and it put me into a fight with steel watchers instead.
The city houses in Act three constantly loaded their objects way before their walls which messed with countless cutscenes where the only background was the sky and a floating bed. I really hope they can fix this so the walls are loaded first.
My journey through the game
Act 1 is amazingly well polished and filled with exploration, wonder and well balanced magical content.
The game's incredible way of letting you choose whatever way you want to do things is both a blessing and a curse. It makes for wonderful content; you can sneak, persuade, kill everyone, you can be good, evil, chaotic, neutral, wise, stupid, decieving or intimidating, you can miss whole quest lines, areas and characters, or you can stumble into the most obscure little nooks with lore tidbits. It's daunting, and really cool that they give you so little guidance and so many options. The openness and vague nature of the Journal - akin to the original games - are sometimes a fun challenge and sometimes for me too scary to handle.
Just because you can never be sure if your choices lead to what you want or the death of everyone making choices can be a bit too scary for me sometimes and I find myself relying on guides to be able to choose. Not optimal, but that's mostly down to personal preference. In those moments I long for the railroaded stories of Mass Effect, but those moments with more railroaded questlines are also there in BG3 and they are amazing.
Act 2 was honestly really scary, the atmosphere was completely different and they did an amazing job creating a frightening cursed land. The only "weird" thing here for me is how very "steampunk" the game turns, which continues into Act 3 as well, which is a testament to the whole American and D&D view on fantasy settings. It is what it is, I'm just not a fan of that kind of setting mixing.
I also developed a fear of long resting here somewhere because I had quests that failed when going to the camp or resting and there is like no telling what those are so I just started doing as much as I could between rests which made the cutscenes during the rests go haywire and fight with each other.
Act 3 had an amazing beginning, and fun well crafted areas. The performance was terrible and kinda buggy due to the many NPC:s and assets in the area. The villains and their quests and areas were great!
I think I did some personal quests a bit early while I should have waited until I was a higher level, they were pretty punishing. When I reached level 12 with a gazillion summons nothing was really difficult anymore.
In the end I had basically every ally possible (except for Astarion's vampire buddys T_T) but I only used the strange ox and dame Aylin, who survived, and iron hand gnomes and city guards (who were killed by mind flayer arcanists) since I don't want people to die.
THE ENDING...
What the heck Larian, that's not ok. No reasonable closure on my romance, no tale of what happens to everyone, I just got a cutscene with Karlach and some lines from Gale. I really hope they are working on expanding on this as we speak and there are some indications that they are.
It wasn't full on "Mass Effect 3 at launch" but not too far from it. I am disappoint... And on that note:
My romance experience
It started amazing with both Astarion and Shadowheart, beautiful stories both. Up until the ending of Act 1 it was amazing and peachy pie. During Act 2 not much happens at all, except for Astarion breaking up with me over a drow and her blood. The horror... I had to break up with Shadowheart to be with Astarion, and at least we could kiss.
But that was about it, the only thing after that until the end of the game was the main personal quest of that character - where I missed a whole part because I couldn't find his siblings - and I did that waaay too soon, and I chose the soft ending which just made him sad and brooding and then there was nothing except for him slut shaming me when I slept with the incubus and scenes bugging out, as well as no real ending.
It started so well, and it ended with emptiness and sadness. Apparently he also has new voice lines during the final fight that I missed T_T
Rip.
In conclusion
Amazing game, 9/10 until they patch the ending and pace the cut scenes during long rests better and make the lower city less laggy. I am perfectly confident in that within a year all this will have happened and there will be no games able to rival this one in the scope of epicness and emotion <3

TTRPG System Thoughts #1
Dungeons and Dragons has a lot of issues and baggage. But acknowledging this there is stuff about it that I like that many alternatives just don't pull off or draw on. So before I even begin to put a metaphorical pen to digital page I will put down some of my thoughts on it and get them in order a little.
One of the things that I like about D&D is that it has a clear level progression. While three of my earliest video gaming experiences were Civilization 2, Magic Carpet and Sim City the last one that had a big impact on me was Pokémon Blue Version. From there two decades of playing Western and Japanese RPG video games engendered an appreciation of that cycle of beat the enemy, get experience, level-up and gain new powers. Many TTRPG systems try to break away from the mechanics of level progression and sometimes I like that. Often times I miss that feeling of getting new abilities and getting more powerful.
To look at two systems that have some of these elements in different ways, Dungeon World (DW) and New World of Darkness (WoD) (and specifically 1st edition will be what I refer to as I have the most experience playing it) both diverge from the level up and gain power formula and iterate on it differently. WoD does not have a level progression but retains a power curve. Your character gains experience which can then be spent on improving certain aspects of their abilities and powers. DW in contrast retains a level progression but abilities are not gated so strictly, you cannot normally pick up advanced moves at character creation or very early but the mechanical numbers for both players and challenges do not scale in the same way.
Of these two I prefer WoD more because it has a better feeling of power progression. Similarly systems which let create a mostly complete character at the start, for example Traveller (Mongoose or 5th edition don't significantly change my gut feelings on this) and Mutants and Masterminds (the nuances between editions do not matter largely for this) leave me floundering a little unless my group is able to collaborate for a strong narrative. While this is certainly something I can enjoy it is also not something I have often been able to enjoy. Many of the friends who I play TTRPGs with struggle without clear progression and mechanics underpinning battles or challenges.
Then there are other systems whose design paradigm is closer to DnD. For example here I can look at Shadow of the Demon Lord (SotD) and 13th Age (13A) which both have level progression, a power curve progression for the maths behind challenge resolution. For SotD I struggle a little with some of the setting and narrative conceit, as well as the mechanical aesthetic. SotD has a very grim aesthetic, with the titular Demon Lord growing in strength as the party races against the clock to the climactic encounter. 13A by contrast has a more standard Western fantasy aesthetic but compresses the level curve to 10. Numbers are squished similar to DnD 5e when compared to DnD 3e but there is also narrative flavour built into the system. Which is good for a single game but frustrating if I want to adapt it to a different setting. There are probably methods and guides on how to do that with 13A but the Icon system feels a little too intrinsically linked to the narrative structure or setting to port the game and be able to explain it simply to new players.
So what did I like about Dungeons and Dragons then?
Well it has a clear level progression and it doesn't feel too rushed, an entirely subjective taste. I think for my personal tastes 10 levels is too quick. 20-30 feels a lot more satisfying. The numbers scale either with newer spells being more powerful or new equipment being more powerful as well.
DnD hardly gets all of this right. There are things I liked and disliked about 4E, and 5E as well. That is also ignoring a lot of issues like cultural appropriation, troubling cultural and ethical views built into mechanics and settings, trap choices in character progression and of course the issue that many of its asymmetrical class designs end up with one side being weaker on average than the other if not having less options to engage with challenges.
But this post is already pretty long and talking about what Dungeons and Dragons does wrong is a topic for another post.

Fnaf world characters
Tumblr media
Oh yes! Im Having troubel finding SpringBonnie And Nightmare. Does anyone know how to get the new animatronics (the nightmare ones)? Are they just found randomly in the game? Mentions "Great job Circus Baby, we knew we could count on you! Personally, I find the guide tool very helpful … I've noticed that animatronics sometimes dry up after a while, then come back in big spurts once you gain a few levels. This book contains following FNAF characters:Learn To Draw Balloon boy. You can also color the final characters, partly using this book as a coloring book too. Hence there are no written instructions required. Puppet This article is being worked on as the wiki expands. Based on the best-selling horror video game series Five Nights at Freddy's, this essential logbook offers night guards new to Freddy Fazbear's Pizza a chance for self-reflection during their first week on the job. It appears as the undamaged version of Adventure Mangle. A server for everyone, No one deserves for be alone :D, this server is a place where people wont judge and is a safe server for everyone. We have moved to a new external forum hosted at. A trophy obtained by having all 40 FNaF World characters in one save. As you progress through the game you will occasionally get into a fight with one of the iconic members of the Five Nights at Freddy’s crew, and if you manage to beat them in battle they will join your party. and besides, Vin had already been a tree and a robot and had still managed to make us cry. This website is for INFORMATIONAL purposes only, ? Fredbear is a playable and unlockable protagonist in FNaF World. He's also a tutorial within the first portion in the game. I can't say if the glitched areas would be better or not, but it can't hurt to try. Follow to get the latest 2021 recipes, articles and more! I have literally found every single animatronic except The Fan, Endo 02 and Endoplush. If you have your party leader set to Fredbear and talk to Fredbear it will unlock the Universe Ending. Fnaf World How To Find Auto Shield Youtube. Five Nights at Freddy's fans won't want to miss this pulse-pounding collection of three novella-length tales that will keep even the bravest FNAF player up at night. The Fan has two moves: first, it buffs your team automatically, and second, it randomly unleashes a torrent of energy blasts at the baddies, hitting everything in a straight line. Fans of the Five Nights at Freddy's saga will undoubtedly like the game, but it only takes half an hour of playing to realize that it's an outdated title in every respect. This website also supports Player to download and play games offline. The battles, just like how they used to be in JRPGs from the 90s, are random and annoying and they're turn-based.įNaF World is an entertaining but improvable JRPG.
Tumblr media
In other words, you manage a group of characters, level them up, equip them with different objects, etc. Nothing makes any sense, but nor does the game try very hard in this respect.įNaF World's gameplay is the one typically found in the JRPG genre. Basically you play more than 40 characters from the FNaF universe as they embark on an adventure through a fantasy world shared with other evil creatures. Yes, those famously terrifying animatronics and all their friends: they're the protagonists.įNaF World's story is just as crazy as its cast of characters permits. FNaF World is an RPG with a turn-based combat system where the protagonists are the characters from the popular horror franchise Five Nights at Freddy's.

Hey! Do you like tabletop rpg actual-play shows that are equal parts audio drama and improv comedy? You should check out the criminally underrated DnD podcast 'Dice Funk'. It manages to combine the comfy vibe of good friends chilling out together cracking jokes with some legitimately interesting worldbuilding that examines existing DnD lore and conventions to put its own spin on them.
Each season is a self-contained storyline with new characters so you can jump in at whichever one sounds interesting (you might get spoilered for some stuff 'cos the PCs have a tendency to make world-altering decisions that still have big repercussions, even with the substantial timeskips between seasons, but otherwise they limit any references to earlier seasons to non-essential easter eggs to keep things accessible).
Personally I started with seasons 3 & 4 and they served as a good introduction to some recurring concepts like "the World of Forms".
Below the Read More I'll break down each season so you can see what appeals to you:
Season 1, "Stoneroot": A noir-esque black comedy that follows a trio of varying levels of competence attempting to solve a simple missing person case that spirals wildly out of control.
I kind of think of this as the 'Here There Be Gerblins' of the show since it's the only season with a different GM so it has a pretty different feel to the rest of the show and takes a bit longer to find its feet.
Personal Highlight: One of the PCs rolls a 3 Intelligence, leading to a running segment where that player brings up monsters from the Monster Manual and asks the other players if they think it has a higher or lower Int than that PC.
Season 2, "Lorelai": A more lighthearted romp in which a cast of interplanar travellers explore the world trying to figure out the cause of a catastrophic flood and put a stop to it. According to the creators this was conceived as a cross between 'Princess Bride' and 'LoZ: Wind Waker' but morphed into more of a "moist Undertale".
Personal Highlight: The first time the GM has to portray a mysterious entity making deals with lower life forms he decides to portray them like a wheeling-and-dealing used-car salesman and it honestly made every scene they're in a delight.
Season 3, "Ilium": The party are trapped in a strange city that people can enter but never leave, taking whatever jobs will make ends meet. Inspired by 'Hot Fuzz' and 'Twin Peaks', this series places a lot of emphasis on how the supernatural elements affect people's normal lives and uncovering the many dark secrets these characters hold.
Personal Highlight: The GM wrote a custom "Wild Magic" table for the party sorcerer with some absolutely buckwild shit on it. I was on the edge of my seat every time it was rolled.
Season 4, "Valentine": A cyberpunk urban fantasy with near-future technology levels in which the cast struggle to make ends meet while doing shady jobs for uncaring megacorporations. If your familiar with DnD, this season's based on 'Shadowrun'. Probably the season most explicitly about how capitalism sucks.
Personal Highlight: One of the PCs is a wizard who uses yugioh-esque trading cards to cast their spells instead of a spellbook. I did not anticipate being so invested in their rivalry with not-Kaiba and neither did the player.
Season 5, "Markov": If you love unlikely found families then this is the season for you! It's a space-faring sci-fi story in a galaxy reeling from war with the colonialist Mind Flayers, setting the stage for a lot of political turmoil. If you're familiar with DnD, this story's based on 'Spelljammer' and absolutely riffs off of a lot of the bizarre ideas that setting introduced.
Personal Highlight: The Son Gun. I will not elaborate on what this means but you'll know when you get to it.
Season 6, "Purgatory": The season opens on a group of mortals who have just been resurrected and tasked with taking up the mantle of the Furies; interplanar assassins who traverse the various afterlives dealing with whichever god-like entities threaten the balance of power between the planes. If you've played 'Planescape: Torment' or are familiar with the city of Sigil you know what to expect.
I honestly think this might be the best individual season of 'Dice Funk'? Everyone's really firing on all cylinders.
Personal Highlight: King Badass has my heart. Y'all can't claim to support himbos and then not be supporting my favourite dumbass bae.
Season 7, "Wormwood": After all the previous seasons deconstructed a lot of elements of classic DnD ("what's up with certain species automatically being evil?", "isn't delving into a dungeon to murder its inhabitants and steal their stuff kinda colonialistic and messed up?", "how would access to magic actually affect the way a society functions?", etc.) this seasons brings this all together by having the closest set-up to a conventional DnD adventure. The world is post-apocalyptic and draws a lot of elements from the 'Dark Sun' setting.
Personal Highlight: Two of the PCs are a cult leader and his follower and I thought I knew exactly what direction that storyline was going...then it absolutely surprised me.
Season 8, "Grendel": I can't comment on this one yet since it's only just started but so far it has had a very cosy, 'Animal Crossing'-like vibe with a focus on a small community, in contrast to previous seasons' much higher stakes.

Werlyt & Gaius - a bunch of thoughts.
I am a little late to the party. I know. But I just finished the Emerald weapon and before I go to try out the „not Zenos“ weapon as in „Diamond“, I need to get my thoughts on the story straight.
Perhaps I have been spoiled by 5.0s brilliant MSQ and cannot appreciate the inherent beauty of at least decent writing any longer. But this felt so wrong and out of tune with the rest of the game. I started writing this 2 hours ago! I wanted to one in bed by now! XD But I had to get it out of my system… so….
Spoilers for the MSQ and Werlyt incoming??? And no I did not re-read this so not just spoilers but also writing errors incoming. -.-
The good
These fights are epic! I have only ever cleared the normal versions, but I loved those. They are amazing. The callbacks to Eula (her being a woman here! When did they discover that???), Regula (may he rest in peace) and Gaius himself in his prime were delightful. But I could do with a little less rotating, ok? A dragoon has positional, you know? And being allowed to pilot my very own mecha was like *chefs kiss*. On that front? Well done Square Enix!
I am also glad they were able to get another use out of Porta Praetora! That place looks amazing with the wide open field and the lake – and Ala Mhigo across it. It was one of my favourite Stormblood areas and I am always glad to return there. And of course… being able to visit the allied camp again… And Werlyt itself. It’s simply a beautiful place. It reminds me very much of southern Greece. If you’ve watched the movie Mamma Mia you know what I mean.
The music too was really nice. But I don’t think I’ll… you know… listen to it on repeat as I am doing with other parts of the soundtrack.
I’ve also loved how much amazing lore we got about Garlemald and especially the garlean military. And the military abroad. The way soldiers not from the mainland get treated. I love learning about these things.
Gaius
The man. The legend. The guy yelling in Prae.
He’s so very boring here. He has so much potential as a character and maybe I’m missing something, but all throughout this story he has been nothing but passive. He’s a reactive character in this storyline. You know. The guy who made deals with Lahabread (the d is intended), tried to take over Eorzea, lead a whole army, stood idly by as the moon dropped, almost died but then decided just not to die and then though „hm… I’ve got so much freetime now. How about I go and hunt some ascians?“ That guy is NOT a reactive character. He is active. He goes out of his way to make shit he wants happen. And in here? He seems too starstruck and devastated by his adopted kids actions to actually have one clear thought.
The only explanation I have is that he might have gotten hit in the head by something on his way to the ruby weapon. I get why he would rely on Cid for help, but the WoL??? The alliance? If you wish to be an ally and help or something, fucking act like it. You were a former legatus and I expect you to live up to your name – even after retiring.
And yeah.. I guess it’s hard having to watch your kids willingly, knowingly dying. But you fucking raised them. You are a big part of the reason to why they are in that predicament. So like… Aside from that I don’t even get why you are in this story at all.
And for the record: I’m not sorry for him. I’m just flabbergasted by all the bullshit we’ve been learning about him.
To be quite honest, I think this story could have worked just as well or maybe even better, if we got another man as the „hero“ of the story. I am talking about none other than our engineering, hammer-swinging, ex-enemy - of course talking about Nero!
The MSQ has long established that his research into the Ultimate Weapon had been taken, twisted and turned – Estinien had to experience this first-hand. I’m not saying that Nero was in need of a redemption arc and I cannot remember if these weapons were of his creation or even stem from anything he did, but it would make so much more sense for me, to have him confront his past in the garlean military like this and be responsible for the death of his former colleagues. Soldiers that he served with, whom he faught with. Give me Nero and them working together to get the weapons going and him bonding with them as his pilots to a degree. Comrades. Not that strange familiar bond that Gaius appareantly has with them. … Scratch that: Let Gaius be the father figure. Him being that wouldn’t change Nero’s relationship with them, but maybe his with Gaius as his superior.
The story wouldn’t even need to try and redeem Nero: He has already gone through major character development with the MSQ and the Omega raid tier. It would simply be Nero, confronted with the things he created, hopefully instilling more morals and a sense of responsibility for his creations. Heck: Let Cid yell at the guy! Seriously! Cid sticking around to help out would make so much more sense if it was Nero instead of freaking Gaius! Cid hated the guy! He might be a professional, but he is not one to torture himself by staying around a guy he (as far as I know) detests.
Make Nero the central figure and give Cid and Gaius the roles of „angel and demon“: One desperately trying to reach out to his old friend, reminding him why they became engineers and trying to make him realise that he can’t just run around designing weapons and leaving the scematics for everyone to read; while the other has trouble letting go of his imperial past and is struggling to see the errors of his ways – if Nero was wrong, than he (Gaius) was wrong too -and of course they did all of this for their home, to further their cause, and to bring peace to the savage lands of Eorzea, who had been fighting amongst themselves for so long… You get the point.
And you could still have these gundam themed fights. But I think everything would make so much more sense in general.
But speaking of which-
The children
I do not truly care for any of them. And that is a shame: I do think there are great characters and dynamics hidden behind these very few cutscenes. When they were first introduced I was wondering why I was suddenly watching „heartwarming“ cutscenes of my foes as children – until I realised that I was supposed to care and that they were supposed to make me feel pity for Gaius. I was supposed to feel bad for him, because they died and he blames himself. But while their fates so far have been gruesome, I cannot say that I am sad they died. They chose to die as they did. There were a myriad more options. And they chose that.
Actually. Their whole story makes me feel like they were huge masochist from the very beginning. They could have just run away and gotten help from someone more competent than them, but they stayed in an abusive military arrangement just so nobody else got hurt?? Please. Use your brains next time. And for the Berserk-like torture scene? I mean. I get what was implied here. But was it necessary? As a writer myself I follow the rule that torture and sexual violence should never be used in a story, unless it must be in there for the story to work or to bring across a vital point important to the story or it’s moral (or if you are writing porn and you are into it – but we are talking official in-game content here). But the violence towards these „children“ seems unnecessary for the plot and the violence of their deaths by piloting the weapons is already gruesome enough. Sometimes it’s better to leave things like this out – the emotional torture of feeling stuck and having a martyrs complex would have been enough here, I think. If the rest of the story had been well written at least.
(I believe my utter lack of sympathy shows how little character developement they had. I love tragic characters, who choose to suffer for the good of other people – even better if those people don’t even like them. It’s just my thing. And those kids are just… well.)
Their reasons and especially why they were making Allie out as the one who would need to survive was also just… weird. Like. I feel like 75% of what happened would not have happened, if they actually talked to each other, used their brains and had done something about their problems. But no…
These characters are also so exchangeable with basic anime/j-RPG character tropes… I only remember Alfonse, Rex and Allie – because I just did the Emerald weapon. And right afterwards I thought, „huh. So… Fullmetal Alchemist?“ Which brings me to my third point …
…the story at large.
„Pacing is a virtue“ or was it patience..? Anyhow: The author of this story should have had more patience with his story and characters and taken a bloody break! And I am not talking about the obvious blunder of „How is Allie feeling?“, „she is in shock and you cannot talk to her“ turning to „oh yeah if you are careful you can talk to her now“. I mean. WTF. That was MAYBE 10-20 in-game minutes of dialogue.
But everything was moving so very fast – and not even in a good way. There are few things better than a fast paced, action rich story about a group of young people trying to safe (their) world. But if you try to cram in two expansions worth of character development and story telling into about two hours of content each patch.. Well, then you get whatever the hell this is.
Gaius is a very interesting character and while I did not understand why they needed to bring him back in 4.4 (?), I do see how he could be a good asset for endwalker. And his involvement in 5.0 with Estinien was just a dear delight. So I am not opposed to learning more about him, to watching his character grow and changed with time. But I am not ready for badly written content of which 50% get told by suddenly induced echo-sequences. I mean – weren’t there rules for the echo at some point???
I’m not sure which one of the devs said it, but the feature that let’s you play an NPC is super convenient for them to tell the story, because before they could only show what happened where the WoL was.
And that’s just it. Rule number 1 in writing anything is „Show don’t tell“. It feels like they literally turned this one around for these cutscenes. While Valens torture and diet-Fandaniel-routine were very much „show“, the rest of the story was one long cutscene of exposition: We get exposition by Cid, by Gaius, by echo, by Gaius and his crew again, then by Allie. Before having to watch scenes we are not there for.
BTW. Dear square Enix: Your writers are capable of writing amazing villains, antagonist and despicable assholes. You don’t have to write „asshole, must die“ on Valens name card. And I also think the „WoL, strike here“ sign above his head was a tad bit too much. Nuance, dear writers. Nuance. Or perhaps I just got spoiled by these last few foes in the MSQ.
When I said I wanted to just be able to punch a bad guy for once and not feel bad about it, I did not mean this! I meant that I just wanted to play training dummy with Danny-Boy.
(Oh! And as far as I’m concerned you can just… sideline Gaius … „would be killer“ and the lady? Make them targetable NPCs with Dialoge to read. Let them stand somewhere accessible and comment on the latest developement. But ffs don’t give me hour long speeches about how you are going to kill Gaius if he does something you don’t like. The guy could and would wipe the floor with you if he felt like it. -.- So. Please. Shut up.)
Conclusion
Basically. I have to finish the Diamond weapon. But I doubt it will change my perception of this story line even in the slightest.
To be perfectly honest though … bringing Gaius back, having this story with and about him, forcing a sort of redemption ark here. It feels like they are really „grooming“ him to be a morally grey ally in Endwalker, with perhaps a big part to play in the endgame. At this point I wouldn’t even be surprised if they pulled a GoT and made him „King in the North“. Or if they had him die a heroic death to save the world, but especially his country. And to do so they need us to think his sacrifice means something. Or that he is the right person to lead Garlemald into a new future (I don’t think he is). But: For one, neither we (the players) nor the characters need to find him worthy of throne or death by heroism for his sacrifice/ascension to work. To be a useful tool for the story, only the other garleans who might oppose the alliance and scions need to deem him or his sacrifice „worthy“. And only they. And Ishikawa-san has all of 6.0 to accomplish whatever the hell she needs him for. He did not need to be the center of his own botched redemption ark. If that’s what they wanted to do. Or maybe I’m looking at this all wrong and all they wanted was to give the writes in training some literal training grounds to test their abilities.
But! On a positive note: I have yet to be told that raids and other side content are canon to any degree. So when playing the next story quests I’ll blissfully ignore all that happened in Werlyt and if it get’s mentioned (because they do that sometimes when you’ve done certain content) I’ll just ignore it.
Happy ignoring! Also: GIVE ME MORE NERO CONTENT!

Selfish Vs Unselfish
Jesus. Yeah I have nothing to comment here, I’m going to read this later when I haven’t just woken up.
You know the drill. Put it under ‘Read More’. A matter of perspective it can be, but there can be an objective truth to sort that out. Let me e x p a n d on this matter using Homestuck and some philosophy. And for those who missed the last ask on Active/Passive divide, please do remember that these labels are on a continuum, not strictly boxed categories. “UNSELFISH” or UNSELFISH - The passive classes lean more to this. How? By being group-oriented. Like support classes in RPGs, their asset comes mainly from a drive to benefit others. Roxy is one of the best examples of this. While she was passive-aggressive in her pursuit of romance, she is ultimately willing to put her self aside and bettering herself if that meant making sure the group stays together. She does this by, to quote Dirk, never turning the tables to make a talk about her when she knows her friend needs something.
TG: i was gonna say why i finally quit drinkin TG: i mean if you want to know GG: Yes. GG: Actually, once you did stop, it made me finally realize it was a problem for you for a long time. GG: And I didn’t say anything at the time, but it made me wonder if I wasn’t doing the right thing before. GG: By failing to point out you might have a problem? Or just going along with it and participating in lively banter any time you clearly had too much to drink? GG: Was I just being a bad friend? TG: nah it wasnt your responsibility to fix my shit TG: and anyway i think i made it hard for anyone to come at me like it was a real problem TG: i was always joking around so much and havin a good time like kind of overzealously so TG: that i probably just made people feel like a shitty wet blanket for even mentioning it
She wants to be of use to her group. However, the downside to this is that, as passively Roxy can be, she often needs them as well.
TG: and now dirk knows that too and for some reason letting him down feels like the worst part?? TG: which is equally lame and weak cuz i should care for my own sake not for how it makes a dude see me but it still just really bothers me ???
TG: i didnt want her to meet a sloppy embarrassing mess of a daughter
TG: even if she did like to drink at some point it was kind of a childish idea that doing so myself would make me closer to her or help us bond or whatever TG: anyway i think i might of overestimated her drinkin habits
How would you know if a class is truly passive when a character just been a really selfish a-hole through the story? It’s how they mainly rely on others as well. Let’s use Aranea as the main example of a selfish passive Sylph of Light that tries to emulate a Thief. Aranea says that Sylph is a healer type of class that involves boosting others, even excessively. However, while she claims that she merely wants to help and shepard the Alpha timeline by taking control of it, Meenah says otherwise. What Aranea has been doing is a self-aggrandizing act to get into the spotlight and not sit on the sidelines anymore, much like her fellow Serket. Like Kanaya, she is meddlesome. She asserts that what she does is for the good of all, even if that means doing something others would object to. They don’t want that. But, she does it anyway.
At first, she complies when the recipient refuses, but when it eventually comes to her ultimate takeover plan, everyone else comes second. She may believe that she’s just granting their wishes, but her underlying motive is ultimately selfish- albeit by excessively “helping” others for her own cause. Aranea failed to learn what Mindfang did:
“8ut as I sit here deciding what to do with the damna8le little sphere, I understand my error. It was not in failing to chart a course through future events to turn my fortune’s tide, even so many sweeps from now. It was in 8elieving the future was mind to know, and fortune mine to control.”
Tumblr media
Now let’s use Rufioh and compare him to Roxy. Both of them are Rogues. Both of them are group-oriented characters that act selfishly from time-to-time. The difference is that Rufioh is more selfish. He’s extremely affable to the point of being a doormat to please others all while trying to be polite about romantic advances despite being a flirt himself. He’s reluctant to voice his own reason that he wants to leave his matespritship with Horuss. Sounds familiar? He’s the Jake of the love triangle. Rufioh cheated on Damara and never takes responsibility from it, focusing on Damara being a crazed scorned girl.
Passive players that fail to balance supporting others and fulfilling their own desires often end up being thrown in a loop. Forcing your solution solution on others for 'their own good’ is selfish. Your concern on how others perceive you may be sprouted from your own insecurity. Whenever you make a donation to the less fortunate, how can you be certain it’s not without the purpose of staving off guilt, doing it because it simply aligns with your moral code, or because it feels good?
AG: I decided not to, 8ecause I didn’t want to 8e the one to make you sad about it.
AG: Was that selfish of me? I dunno.
It’s a gem to see volunteers whose instincts are to help people to make life more bearable, mind you. But they’re also doing that because they want to see them better and it’s often their own desire to do so and fulfill that dream.
ENLIGHTENED VS UNENLIGHTENED SELFISHNESS
-I’ve rambled on this a bit. Here’s a recap:
*Unenlightened Selfishness is… pretty much the archetypal self-centeredness that makes people jerks. It’s whenever you do something for yourself with little to no regard to other people’s desires. It’s the greedy shark hoarding all the treasure. It’s when you try to justify your actions with a perspective of “everyone else is selfish, so I’m entitled to be an asshole to everyone too”.
*Enlightened Selfishness or Enlightened Self-Interest is the opposite. It’s when you respect that everyone has their own wants and needs by compromising and coinciding them with your own. It’s like a deal. It’s the Golden Rule. You scratch my back, I scratch yours. It’s when you do things for other people for the good you’ll get from it, even when the payment is simple politeness and being generally nice. Society expects each individual to benefit the community in turn by working. We work with the expectation that others work for us. Unlike the first, this form of self-interest benefits both parties. Another term is Selfish Altruism.
We see an exercise of selfishness burning brightly through Vriska’s arc.
Tumblr media
(VRISKA): I’m not a loser though! (VRISKA): I LIKE who I’ve 8ecome. (VRISKA): I actually feel happy and good a8out my life for the first time in… may8e forever?? (VRISKA): Like, ACTUALLY good a8out my life in a way that feels real, instead of forced. Don’t you realize that’s what it was like for us? VRISKA: You don’t have a life! VRISKA: You’re DEAD, remem8er? VRISKA: I’m the one with the life! VRISKA: And I fully intend to use it in a relevant and constructive way to help 8ring an end to all the horri8le shit that’s 8een going on for way too long. VRISKA: Remem8er when you used to care a8out that sort of thing? VRISKA: No, o8viously not. VRISKA: All you care a8out now is 8ullshit hipstery fashion trends, feeling “happy”, and… whatever the fuck it is you’re doing here? VRISKA: Frolicking with some horses in an ugly field or some shit. VRISKA: Just a8solutely disgraceful. VRISKA: How could I have 8ecome so selfish??
Vriska is accusing (Vriska) for being selfish despite being selfish herself. Remember her popular hero quote?
Tumblr media
VRISKA: I only ever wanted to do the right thing no matter how it made people judge me, and I don’t need a magic ring to do that. VRISKA: You don’t have to 8e alive to make yourself relevant. VRISKA: And you don’t have to 8e a good person to 8e a hero. VRISKA: You just have to know who you are and stay true to that. VRISKA: So I’m going to keep fighting for people the only way I ever knew how.
VRISKA: 8y 8eing me.
And a few panels after that, she does this.
Tumblr media
VRISKA: OHHHHHHHH NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! VRISKA: OH FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! VRISKA: WE’RE G8ING TO LOOK AT WH8T’S IN THIS CH8ST RIGHT N8W!!!!!!!! VRISKA: DO YOU HE8R ME Y8U F8CK? VRISKA: I D8DN’T SCRAPE AND CLAW MY W8Y 8ACK TO RELEV8NCE F8R THIS SHIT! VRISKA: I’M DOING S8METHING F8CKING IMPORTANT! AND WHEN I DO SOMETH8NG FUCKING IMPORT8NT, EVERY88DY 8ETTER D8MN WELL PAY ATT8NTION TO ME!!!!!!!!
Sure, her resurrection got everyone’s attention, but also annoyance. A lot of their personal problems aren’t truly solved, just put on a temporary chokehold by someone with a stubborn, assertive personality. She’s taking charge so that her team won’t be in poor condition for the big fight, but also to, well, be in the spotlight. She doesn’t care how others think of her, she just wants to help… but also because it makes her important, even if that means overpowering her friends, including her moirail Terezi. Vriska’s the active counterpart to Roxy in both class and aspect. A positive part of this is that it’s easier for Vriska and other folks like her to be self-driven.
What am I getting at? It’s a matter of intention. Are they doing it to mainly benefit others? Or are they acting to benefit themselves? Even if it’s grey, there’s often a tint or shade that’s lighter or darker that makes someone lean somewhere. It doesn’t matter how they see themselves and how they perceive their own actions, it’s their motivation that defines the line. Accidents don’t count. It’s the will. Looking at one’s intention is a way to objectively sift through the blurriness of it their actions, even when said intention is subconscious. You can also simply take the Active/Passive divide on strictly class roles in terms of RPG abilities alone if you’re not keen on the personalities of the bunch.

What Video Games my OCs Like to Play
(Just a little something I've been thinking about recently. Plus, I miss writing about my girls. <3)
Tumblr media
Carol:
- a very chill gamer
- enjoys games like Animal Crossing, Stardew Valley, Harvest Moon, and dating sims
- her favorite game is Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town because she used to play it as a kid
- she's tried playing first person shooter games like Destiny and Halo with Donnie, Mikey, and June, but she's just not really into it
- she'll still get pretty pumped when she takes someone out though hehe
- is decent at Super Smash Bros but will annihilate you with Isabell
Jen:
- doesn't play a lot of video games since she's more of a book reader
- when she does play, she really enjoys RPGs like Fire Emblem
- she plays the Fire Emblem games on Hard with Permadeath. Jen has no fear
- has tried playing Animal Crossing with Carol but got bored quickly
- actually enjoys Minecraft but she'll go through phases of being obsessed for two weeks and then not even thinking about it for five months
- loves playing Nintendo games that involves a group because it's more fun
- so Mario Party is also a go-to for her when it's game night
June:
- she enjoys just about any game
- she especially loves the indie horror games and will force Jen and Carol to play them with her
- will beat everyone at Pokemon because she's been obsessively playing the games since the 90s
- June especially enjoys fast-paced games like Sonic the Hedgehog
- she 100% used to be afraid of the Tails Doll back in the 2000s and refuses to play Sonic R to this day
- she is REALLY good at Super Smash Bros as Sonic but always places last when it comes to Mario Party
