BIOGRAPHY
( TW: teenage pregnancy, infidelity, drug use, overdose )
By all accounts— by every metric Jack could use to quantify the fact as an adult— Simon Vohra and Claire Sharma had never been ready to be parents. Was anyone ever really ready to be a parent? It was a question Jack had asked himself constantly as he’d gotten older but it had never been his place to judge-- his parents hadn’t done him any favors but for at least some time they had tried to be present and helpful and Jack could never fault them for that. Blackpool-- a seaside resort town on the English coast-- had been home to Simon and Claire as long as they both could remember but they had remained strangers to one another until they met through a mutual friend when they were seventeen years old. The attraction had been immediate-- a spark neither of them were prepared to deal with but allowed to catch and ignite the moment they met, an encounter that resulted in an unplanned pregnancy and a great deal of responsibility neither of them wanted staring them both in the face. Simon dropped out of sixth form promptly to begin working in earnest and provide for the family he certainly hadn’t expected to have but was willing to work to support nonetheless; Claire, after informing her parents, remained in school at her parents’ request though their relationship became strained from that moment on.
When John was born the couple was delighted— Simon took to being a father rather quickly and seemed to enjoy it while Claire was an absent mother at best in spite of Simon’s many attempts to help her feel more present in their son’s life. It was no secret to anyone at all that Claire was cheating on Simon with what was rumored to be every eligible man in Blackpool and though Simon was heartbroken by the rumors and the confidence he felt in their truthfulness-- he never brought the issue up with Claire-- choosing instead to look after their son and try to hold their family together as best he could. It was yet another accident that marked Claire’s second pregnancy when John was five and though Simon wasn’t even reasonably confident that the child was his he again prepared himself to be a father as best he possibly could. Jack was born on a cool October morning and from the moment he uttered his first cry his father was devoted to him and for the first time his mother dove headfirst into caring for both of her sons with a zeal she’d never demonstrated prior.
Though they were on the poorer side they were happy for a great deal of Jack’s initial childhood and seemed to be primed to be that much happier when Claire found out she was pregnant with her third child when Jack was seven. It was yet more of the same in the Vohra-Sharma household until Tommy was around two and Claire eloped with a family friend and informed Simon plainly that she couldn’t handle being stuck in a dead end town with a dead end life and three children she hadn’t wanted in the first place. Simon was devastated but for the first year or two following Claire’s departure he managed to hold both himself and the family together rather well. Jack-- already a brilliant boy intellectually and a spot of sunshine in the world as far as his father was concerned-- began to help around the house to take some of the worry away from his father even going so far as to look after his baby brother whenever he wasn’t at school. John, who was sixteen, more or less stopped coming home and though Jack was aware he was essentially living with a friend’s across town he considered his absence in his life nothing short of abandonment and even as an adult holds a deep resentment towards him for that fact.
Things for the Vohra family began to unravel slowly— Simon began to spend what money he earned from work on cocaine and other drugs-- he was still present and still loving but Jack found himself more and more becoming a parent to Tommy rather than a brother. When he was twelve Simon’s habits escalated to a rather expensive heroin addiction that Jack could hardly process, let alone deal with and though he tried his best to raise his brother and himself it was difficult for a child to raise another child. He was nearly thirteen when he came home from school with Tommy in tow to find their father had overdosed in their kitchen— an overdose that would, even after his frantic call to emergency services, eventually lead to his death. Without extended family to look after them and with John’s refusal to take on the responsibility of raising siblings he hardly knew both Jack and Tommy became wards of court.
Jack-- already with a reputation for being a brilliant student-- threw himself into his studies with that much more zeal as he and Tommy adjusted to life with their first foster family; his IQ was tested and he was placed into progressively more advanced courses until he was taking university classes part-time by the time he entered year eleven. His foster parents supported him fully and there was frequent talk of adoption for both himself and Tommy— who was easily the most important person in his life bar none. He was very nearly eighteen by the time the adoption paperwork was processed and both he and Tommy were officially members of the Eaton family. Though he was reluctant to leave Tommy behind when he’d been his primary caregiver for so many years prior to being placed with their adoptive family it was the encouragement of his adoptive parents Mark and Rose that finally reassured Jack to the point of feeling comfortable applying to both traditional universities and culinary school programs far afield of Blackpool. Higher education was a world of splendor for Jack who had always been so fiercely curious and sharply intelligent-- he finished his undergraduate degree six months earlier than most of his graduating class before moving on to study at a culinary institute in France with the hope of moving on to several Michelin star restaurants that had offered him positions before he’d even finished his schooling.
Cooking had been a passion of his from the moment he was allowed to help his father cook dinner for the first time as a child-- he’d been fascinated with food and the way it brought people together considering his childhood wasn’t always the most stable thing. It wasn’t until he began to work in earnest that he realized that becoming a prominent chef and owning a restaurant of his own was his dream more than any one thing he could put his finger on. After years of intense work Jack walked away from the restaurant in France he’d been training in at the age of twenty-nine with a new Michelin star for the restaurant under his belt and several offers for work in the United States waiting for him if he chose to take them. It was bizarre to put so much distance between himself and both of the countries he had come to consider home in their own ways but with the support of his family at his back it was a choice Jack made easily and he moved from Paris to Boston with a duffel bag’s worth of possessions, a job offer and a dream.
Boston was a world away from Paris in more ways than Jack could readily count but he’d always been an outgoing person and making friends and building relationships came easily to him— his brigade loved him and he spent most of his time outside of work with fellow chefs under his supervision or who worked in local restaurants that were actively competing with his own. It was during one of their many outings together that Jack found himself-- with some amount of embarrassment-- lingering at a strip club with some of his friends. It wasn’t a scene he frequented and it wasn’t a surprise to anyone when he retreated to the bathroom after an hour or so in the club only to find a woman in distress sharing the space with him just when he’d managed to calm down. Meeting Avery was a turning point in his life if only because he’d never allowed himself to slow down for even a moment in the pursuit of the things he’d hoped to earn— but when they began dating he started to work less and focus more and more on opening his own restaurant so he could spend more and more time with Avery and eventually with both Avery and Mars.
Their move to Providence Peak has allowed him to do just that— though he’s working in the capacity of a private chef more often than not as he tries to get the foundations planned for opening a restaurant of his own but he’s married to a woman he loves more than anything else with a step-son he’d do anything for and far happier than he ever imagined one man could possibly be. His little brother’s recent arrival in town has only deepened Jack’s happiness and as far as he’s concerned Providence Peak is something of a paradise made real.

By all accounts— by every metric Percy could use to quantify the fact as an adult— Simon Garrick and Claire Ashby had never been ready to be parents. Was anyone ever really ready to be a parent? Simon was devastated but for the first year or two following Claire’s departure he managed to hold both himself and the family together rather well. Things for the Garrick family began to unravel slowly— Simon began to spend what money he earned from work on cocaine and other drugs– he was still present and still loving but Percy found herself more and more becoming a parent to Tommy rather than a sister. When she was twelve Simon’s habits escalated to a rather expensive heroin addiction that Percy could hardly process, let alone deal with and though she tried her best to raise her brother and herself it was difficult for a child to raise another child. She was nearly thirteen when she came home from school with Tommy in tow to find their father had overdosed in their kitchen— an overdose that would, even after her frantic call to emergency services, eventually lead to his death. Though she was reluctant to leave Tommy behind when she’d been his primary caregiver for so many years prior to being placed with their adoptive family it was the encouragement of her adoptive parents Mark and Rose that finally reassured Percy to the point of feeling comfortable applying to universities about as far away from Blackpool as she could get without leaving the country. Higher education was a world of splendor for Percy who had always been so fiercely curious and sharply intelligent– she finished her undergraduate degree six months earlier than most of his graduating class before moving on to study further.
Animals and zoology had been passions of hers from the moment she visited a zoo for the first time on an outing with her parents when she was still very young. She was fascinated by animals of all sorts and wanted to know everything about how to care for them and preserve the environments they called home. It seemed the logical choice for her to follow her chosen course of study as far as she could-- and when she was twenty-six she walked away from Cambridge with a degree in zoology to her name and several research positions made available to her over the whole of continental Europe and beyond if she chose to take them. Traveling across Europe to do the thing she loved more than anything in the world was a gift Percy had never had any inkling of taking advantage of and she eventually began to give guest lectures at universities in major cities near her work sites as well as develop a passion for photography she found delightful to explore when she was researching in far away countries she’d never imagined even seeing as a child. When her research positions drew closer to their deadlines and the projects she’d been working on were finalized she began to search for another place to call home-- eventually settling on Turtle Bay due largely in part to the fact that Tommy had found his way to the area for college and Percy couldn’t think of anything more delightful than doing work she loved with her little brother at her side-- even if the work is a bit more sporadic than she’d like-- she’s always been able to look on the bright side of things and she doesn’t see that changing.

Please Help Us Help Others
As some of you may know, my father helps run a popular Tabletop RPG Podcast (you know, like DnD). His group, Happy Jack's RPG is trying to use their platform to do good in the world and have started a fundraiser to help LGBTQ+ people facing oppression and persecution in foreign countries like Chechnya.
If you have some spare funds, please consider donating to The American Friends of Rainbow Railroad. You can find the link to our fundraiser here: https://www.givemn.org/story/Rainbowrailroading
I know times are hard, so if you can't spare anything right now, please reblog this and spread the word. This would really mean a lot to my family and me, and could mean the world to someone in need.

Hi! Thought I’d do a little intro post.
I’m Book, I’m 20, I’m a college junior studying anthropology.
I’ve been writing fiction for as long as I can remember, but for the first time I’m actually sharing my writing on AO3! Rhapsody in Reverie is my first published work, and the response has been staggeringly positive!
I also like to draw, I’m mostly self-taught so it’s not frequent that I share my works since I’m usually not happy with them.
I have ADHD, diagnosed with ADD so I’m primarily inattentive type ADHD. I have too many interests to count, I am the queen of hobbies/ Jack of all trades master of none. I shift hyperfocuses roughly every few weeks.
Other than writing and art, I sail, I play violin and piano, I knit, I bake, I play videogames (lots of turn-based RPGs), I play dnd and Co-DM a session with my significant other, I love reading and listening to podcasts (mostly TAZ and MBMBAM), I dabble in eclectic secular witchcraft, and there’s definitely more interests/hobbies that I haven’t revisited recently but you get the gist.
I’m gray-asexual and panromantic, I have a complicated relationship with gender but I use she/her pronouns (they/them is fine too). I consider myself somewhere between a woman and non-binary, but for most practical purposes I just say I’m female.
I have a lovely significant other (who you may know as my beta reader) he uses he/him pronouns. I usually refer to him as my S.O. when he comes up, boyfriend too occasionally. I want to have a cute nickname for him on here but I haven’t come up with one yet.
As of right now I’m very much into Jojo’s Bizzare Adventure, I’ve finished part 5 and part 3, I’m halfway through part 2 and part 4, and I promise I’ll watch part 1 soon. Considering reading the part 5 manga, since that’s my favorite part.
I’ve been a lifelong HP fan, I used to be into it a lot more, like reread the entire series once a year hardcore, but I haven't had the spoons to go through and really re-evaluate my reading in light of JKR’s views.
Other things I’m into are AtLA, Warehouse 13 (PLEASE talk to me about that), Bones (up until a certain season at which point I pretend it ended), Eragon/The Inheritance Cycle (He’s writing more y’all I’m endlessly hype!), She-Ra (A couple seasons behind tho), The Adventure Zone (almost done with the balance arc), Pokemon, Legend of Zelda, Fire Emblem, Animal Crossing, and so much more that I can’t name off the top of my head.
On a negative note, PLEASE do not interact if you’re a TERF, a NAZI, an Aphobe, a MAP/pedophile, or if you support those things. This is not a discourse blog, and frankly the only reason these posts are going here instead of my main blog is because I’ve seen the rabid discourse in fandom/ship tags. I would love to leave anon on, but in the event that people try to start shit I reserve the right to turn it off. I use the block function liberally, I have enough shit in my life without internet drama.
With that out of the way, I love to talk to people about stuff! I’m terribly at holding conversations, but I’m always happy to chat about things!
I’ll open up commissions at some point, for art/writing/sigils. I do tarot and rune readings through my blog @melodiclakewitch. I’m working on getting a ko-fi up and running, not that I expect any donations but I want to leave the possibility open. My main is @the-nerdy-bookworm if you’re interested in my shitposting shenanigans.
I’ll try and keep on top of tagging things, feel free to ask me to tag anything.

“Space battles are boring in RPGs.” This is was what was said on the Happy Jacks RPG Podcast. For the most part, I agree as unless the player is the pilot or a gunner there is not a whole lot to do on the ship. The players are spending a lot of time waiting for those who are engaged in a battle to be done with their turn and nothing really interesting happens. the next thing you know the players are stacking dice and on their phones. This bit of Sci-Fi RPG Advice talks about if you treat a ship like a flying dungeon the non-active party members will have plenty to do. Like, survive.
Think about this what is boring about a space battle. Even in Star Trek where the cast basically stands in front of consoles and pushes buttons things can get rather exciting when they start to take damage. You have panels falling from the ceiling, Crew members being vented out into space & loss of life support on deck three. Imagine if you were playing one of those crew members in those areas?
From a player perspective, there are all kinds of Obstacles like loss of gravity to the air slowly running out. This can really set a scene of urgency.

Sci-Fi RPG Advice: From a Dungeon Master perspective
We all know how to create a dungeon. It’s one of the first things we do as Dungeon Masters/GameMasters. Basically, create a map then add traps to each of the locations. But it does have a little bit of tweaking to make it work.
During a battle find a reason why the non-combat characters are in a different part of the ship. Then let all hell break loose inside the ship. Now your Players are no longer bored during the battle.
Avoid Instant death
One of the things to consider is that in space there are a lot of ways to die instantly. This sounds like a great idea if you are going to make something sound dangerous (Or if you are twelve-year-old GM and have not figured out that you are not trying to kill the player characters) But real space is very dangerous. There are things that can kill you before you even know something is wrong. In a Sci-fi RPG setting, you need to make sure that each “Trap” has at least three ways to avoid instant death. (That is what Red Shirts are for) .
Unlike Dungeon traps, these traps are failing equipment and not meant to keep invaders out. In a Science Fiction scenario, these bits of malfunctions have deadly results but no ill will towards the RPG characters. So that electrical cable that is flopping around is not after the players.
The other part of the space ship trap is that the player will want to fix the issue if its their ship. So they are less likely to use a blaster to burn something unless that really needs to happen.
Ideas for Sci-Fi Traps
Here are a few ideas for things that can go wrong in a space ship. Now I am currently writing a longer version of this that will be in the coming Star-Fall RPG. But for now, here are some basics. I’m sure the Cast of the Star-Fall Actual Play Podcast is getting a little nervous reading this. I also want to mention that we are leaving the hard science in the books at the moment as this is Science Fiction with the focus on the fiction. I make no claims of scientific accuracy.
Tumblr media
New To Star-Fall?
Go back to the first episode to see what you are missing.
Start from Episode One!
Taking traditional traps and making them a busted space ship system
The Bottomless Pit Trap = The broken airlock
This trap is the same as the old bottomless pit but it’s on the wall. (And the void of space will kill you in a few rounds. (Sorry explosive decompression is a myth ). Think of reasons why this airlock is broken. Why did it open like that? And what is it going to take to fix it. Being that an airlock is a very sturdy system most likely the issue is electrical or software-related.
Something else to think about is that there is a good chance that the air is already vented out into space by the time a player needs to go fix the issue.
Poison cloud trap = Gas or reactor leak
What is a good science Fiction without a reactor leak of some kind? The idea of this trap is that the gas or radiation is very bad for the player characters. The players will need to figure out how to fix the problem before all the air in the area is affected. In situations like this its always a good idea to allow the players to be creative with coming up with solutions.
The Arrow Trap = Exploding pannels
Another classic dangerous trap but now instead of having the arrows triggered by a pannel they were going to explode anyway. Or perhaps a short in the system will cause the fule system to rupture while the players are walking by. once again allow creative answers.
I’m curious about what traps you might use
I hope this bit of Sci-Fi RPG Advice is helpful. I would love to hear how you have converted traditional rpg traps into Science Fiction death traps for RPGs.

Grading The NBA Draft
The 2019 NBA Draft is this Thursday, June 20, from the Barclays Center. Later the next day or even later that night, I’m sure you’ll see “experts” give out their grades to each team and who they think WON and LOST the draft before anyone ever steps on the court. Of course, this is a ridiculous exercise to try and predict how the Class of 2019 will do before they play. Like most things in sports media today (TV, radio, podcast, websites, etc.) the idea of predicting how anyone is going to perform is a waste of time and energy. There are too many variables and the team’s themselves don’t have the slightest clue how anyone will turn out; All-Star or bust. It’s no fun to wait five years, at least, until we have some sort of idea how these guys developed. We need immediate reaction. A+ to this team and a D to this team for picking players that we don’t know how they will end up. We can though look back at past drafts and see which players were the best, who were busts and what late round gems ended up as Hall of Famers. It doesn’t take much explaining why Chris Paul was the best player taken in the 2005 draft, followed by Deron Williams, David Lee and Andrew Bogut. For this exercise, we’ll use Basketball-Reference Win Shares. Similar to WAR in baseball, Win Shares is an estimate of the number of wins contributed by a player. It attempts to divide up credit for team success to the individuals on the team. It gives you a pretty solid indication of who was a bust or who excelled among their draft class. For reference; Kareem is the all-time Win Shares leader at 273. LeBron is fourth at 226. Jordan is fifth at 214. Chris Paul is at 171, 19th all-time
2000 1. Hedo Turkoglu - 16th overall to Sacramento - 63 WS 2. Mike Miller - 5th overall to Orlando - 60 WS 3. Jamal Crawford - 8th overall to Cleveland - 60 WS 4. Michael Redd - 43rd overall to Milwaukee - 55 WS 5. Kenyon Martin - 1st overall to New Jersey - 48 WS Not a Hall of Famer here in the weak 2000 NBA Draft. Other notables are Morris Peterson and Quinten Richardson, who had some success. The top of this draft did not live up to expectations, even though two of the five best players in the draft were top five picks in Miller and Martin. Stromile Swift (#2 to the Grizzlies), Darius Miles (#3 to the Clippers), and Marcus Fizer (#4 to the Bulls) were all busts, averaging between 8-10 points per game and just under five rebounds. 2001 1. Pau Gasol - 3rd overall to Atlanta - 144 WS - 30th best ever 2. Tony Parker - 28th to San Antonio - 111 WS - 61st best ever 3. Tyson Chandler - 2nd overall to Chicago - 101 WS - 83rd best ever 4. Richard Jefferson - 13th overall to Houston - 83 WS 5. Joe Johnson - 10th overall to Boston - 82 WS Gasol and Parker are likely Hall of Famers that were important pieces to championship teams. Tyson Chandler was still active last season. Chandler turned his career around after a tough start for the Bulls coming straight out of high school. This past season was the first without Joe Johnson and Zach Randolph, multiple time All-Stars. Jason Richardson, Gilbert Arenas, Gerald Wallace and Shane Battier all had their moments too.  A solid class with longevity as it had six players play 17+ seasons, Kwame Brown notwithstanding.  2002 1. Amar’e Stoudemire - 9th overall to Phoenix - 92 WS 2. Carlos Boozer - 35th overall to Cleveland - 80 WS 3. Nene Hilario - 7th overall to New York - 73 WS 4. Yao Ming - 1st overall to Houston - 65 WS 5. Tayshaun Prince - 23rd overall to Detroit - 63 WS Without injuries, Yao Ming is the best player in this class and the rare case of the first overall pick actually being the best player. Yao was induced into the Hall of Fame in 2016 and is likely the only HOF of the Class of 2002. Mike Dunleavy and Caron Butler were top 10 picks that finished with good careers.
2003 1. LeBron James - 1st overall to Cleveland - 226 WS - 4th best ever 2. Dwyane Wade - 5th overall to Miami - 120 WS - 49th all-time 3. Chris Bosh - 4th overall to Toronto - 106 WS - 74th all-time 4. Carmelo Anthony - 3rd overall to Denver- 101 WS 5. David West - 18th overall to New Orleans - 85 WS One of the best draft classes of all-time. The three best players made up the two title teams for Miami and Carmelo may get into the HOF. One of the great “What If’s” in NBA history is what Detroit could have done if they didn’t pick Darko Milicic with the second overall pick when the Pistons were already an NBA Finals caliber team. Kyle Korver, Mo Williams, Kirk Hinrich and Boris Diaw all had their moments.
2004 1. Dwight Howard - 1st overall to Orlando - 128 WS - 41st best ever 2. Andre Iguodala - 9th overall to Philadelphia - 96 WS 3. Luol Deng - 7th overall to Phoenix - 74 WS 4. Al Jefferson - 15th overall to Boston - 71 WS 5. Kevin Martin - 26th overall to Sacramento - 61 WS Back-to-back drafts where the best player was the #1 overall pick. Other than Dwight Howard, you have Iguodala and Deng, who combined for three All-Star games. Some may argue for Iguodala in the HOF with a Finals MVP for Golden State and his importance on the defensive end, but he has averaged under 7 ppg, 4 rpg and 3 apg in his five years over his early to mid 30′s with the Warriors. I think Howard should get in the HOF when the time comes. Other than him, there are not a ton of multi-time All-Stars coming from the ‘04 draft. Trevor Ariza, Devin Harris, Josh Smith, Jameer Nelson, J.R. Smith, Emeka Okafor and Ben Gordon were all starters that you’d be happy to have on your team.
2005 1. Chris Paul - 4th overall to New Orleans - 171 WS - 19th best ever 2. Deron Williams - 3rd overall to Utah - 77 WS 3. David Lee - 30th overall to New York - 76 WS 4. Marvin Williams - 2nd overall to Atlanta - 62 WS 5. Marcin Gortat - 57th overall to Phoenix - 61 WS One Hall of Fame point guard, an five time All-Star in Deron Williams, two- time All-Star in David Lee and that’s about it for difference makers in the 2005 Draft. The 1st overall pick was Andrew Bogut who had some good years with Milwaukee. I wouldn’t call him a bust, but he was a disappointment considering where he was selected. The ‘05 Draft does have a solid grouping of rotation guys including Lou Williams, Danny Granger, Monta Ellis, Raymond Felton, Channing Frye, Andrew Bynum, Jarrett Jack, Nate Robinson and Charlie Villanueva.
2006 1. LaMarcus Aldridge - 2nd overall to Chicago - 107 WS - 70th best ever 2. Paul Millsap - 47th overall to Utah - 88 WS 3.. Kyle Lowry - 24th overall to Memphis - 86 WS 4. J.J. Redick - 11th overall to Orlando - 58 WS 5. Rajon Rondo - 21st overall to Boston - 58 WS I don’t see any Hall of Fame players from the 2006 Draft. There really wasn’t much talent in ‘06 once you get outside of the 10 best players. The #1 overall pick, Andrea Bargnani of Toronto, was in the not bust, but disappointing category as a string of injuries prevented him from reaching his potential. The top 5-10 in this draft is littered with busts from Adam Morrison, Tyrus Thomas, Randy Foye, Sheldon Williams and the what could have been career of Brandon Roy if not for a bum knee.
2007 1. Kevin Durant - 2nd overall to Seattle - 141 WS - 32nd best ever 2. Al Horford - 3rd overall to Atlanta - 85 WS 3. Marc Gasol - 48th overall to the Lakers - 79 WS 4. Mike Conley - 4th overall to Memphis - 71 WS 5. Joakim Noah - 9th overall to Chicago - 61 WS A good draft where three of the four best players were all selected in the top four. Not much depth as it was a very top heavy draft. Greg Oden will join the long list of injury riddled top picks that will never know how good he could have been. Portland took a gamble on another big man and it didn’t pay off. 105 career games.
2008 1. Russell Westbrook - 4th overall to Oklahoma City - 96 WS 2. DeAndre Jordan - 35th overall to the Clippers - 83 WS 3. Kevin Love - 5th overall to Memphis - 78 WS 4. Serge Ibaka - 24th overall to Oklahoma City - 63 WS 5. Brook Lopez - 10th overall to New Jersey - 60 WS One Hall of Famer, a few All-Stars and a bunch of guys after that. It seems that there might be one HOF level player every year or so in the draft, followed by a couple of guys that will make a handful of All-Star teams, followed by about 5-10 guys that will be a starter. Derrick Rose would be in the top five if not for injuries.  2009 1. James Harden - 3rd overall to Oklahoma City - 121 WS - 46th best ever 2. Steph Curry - 7th overall to Golden State - 102 WS 3. Blake Griffin - 1st overall to the Clippers - 75 WS 4. DeMar DeRozan - 9th overall to Toronto - 60 WS 5. Darren Collison - 21st overall to New Orleans - 49 Now we enter the drafts from 10 years ago or less where guys are right in the prime of their careers. An exceptional top of this draft with two guaranteed Hall of Famers in Harden and Curry. Meanwhile, I would say Blake Griffin has lived up to the hype of a #1 overall pick. The #2 pick in this draft, Hasheem Thabeet, would not. 2010 1. Paul George - 10th overall to Indiana - 65 WS 2. Greg Monroe - 7th overall to Detroit - 49 WS 3. Derrick Favors - 3rd overall to New Jersey - 49 WS 4. Gordon Hayward - 9th overall to Utah - 47 WS 5. John Wall - 1st overall to Washington - 44 WS Rankings can still change here since most of these guys still have some prime years left and may play another 6-8 seasons, so the Win Shares will be fewer than previous drafts. You could also see someone like DeMarcus Cousins, who would rank sixth, end up in the top five at the end of his career. 2010 was a solid draft with most of the top tier talent coming from the top 10 picks, which you like to see. 2011 1. Jimmy Butler - 30th overall to Chicago - 66 WS 2. Kawhi Leonard - 15th overall to Indiana - 65 WS 3. Kyrie Irving - 1st overall to Cleveland - 58 WS 4. Kemba Walker - 9th overall to Charlotte - 48 WS 5. Klay Thompson - 11th overall to Golden State - 46 WS There’s really not any debate to the rankings when it comes to Win Shares until now. I think most would say Kawhi is the best player in this draft and that Klay is better than Kemba. There’s not a ton of stars after the top five, but this is as strong of a top five as any as we have seen. All are high level All-Stars and with a few HOF mixed in. Lots of misses in the top 10, including Derrick Williams, Jan Vesely, Bismack Biyombo and Jimmer Fredette. The final pick in this draft, Isaiah Thomas, has been better than most of the top 10. 2012 1. Anthony Davis - 1st overall to New Orleans - 72 WS 2. Damian Lillard - 6th overall to Portland - 70 WS 3. Andre Drummond - 9th overall to Detroit - 56 WS 4. Draymond Green - 35th overall to Golden State - 43 WS 5. Bradley Beal - 3rd overall to Washington - 36 WS Davis joins LeBron and Dwight Howard as the only #1 overall picks to be the best player in their respective drafts. Draymond Green also joins a short list of second round picks to be among the top five in their draft class. Looking back seven years ago now, this just wasn’t a very good draft. #2 overall Michael Kidd-Gilchrist is the ninth best players in this draft and he has not had a good career with Charlotte. Most drafts end up with at least 10-15 quality players, but not 2012. 2013 1. Giannis Antetokounmpo - 15th overall to Milwaukee - 53 WS 2. Rudy Gobert - 27th overall to Denver - 52 WS 3. Steven Adams - 12th overall to Oklahoma City - 38 WS 4. Mason Plumlee - 22nd overall to Brooklyn - 31 WS 5. Otto Porter - 3rd overall to Washington - 29 WS It says a lot that only one top 10 pick is among the five best players of the 2013 Draft class. 2006 is the only other year we have looked at where there were not at least two top 10 picks among the five best players. I think Victor Oladipo and C.J, McCollum will end up higher than Porter and Plumlee on this list. 2013 is a contender for having the worst top 10 in history. Oladipo has been very good at times and has shown improvement the last two years. Otto Porter has been ok and McCollum has been a good number two option in Portland. The rest of the top 10 has been terrible. Anthony Bennett, the worst #1 pick in history, followed by Cody Zeller, Alex Len, Nerlens Noel, Ben McLemore, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Trey Burke. None of those top 10 are starter level players. 2014 1. Nikola Jokic - 41st overall to Denver - 38 WS 2. Clint Capela - 25th overall to Houston - 31 WS 3. Dwight Powell - 45th overall to Charlotte - 22 WS 4. Jerami Grant - 39th overall to Philadelphia - 18 WS 5. Aaron Gordon - 4th overall to Orlando - 18 WS This should probably be the last draft class that we can look at because even thought it has been five years, a lot can and will change with this top five. Joel Embiid is ranked seventh due to injury, although he has been the best player from this draft. Zach Lavine has had a torn ACL and is much better than his 22nd Win Shares ranking among the Class of 2014. Andrew Wiggins has been a disappointment as the #1 overall pick,  It might be surprising that you have to wait at least five years, if not six in my opinion, to have an accurate determination of who ended up as a draft bust or steal or who won the draft. Of the 15 years (2000-2014), 12 of those ended up with at least two of the top 10 players selected in the top five of best players in that draft. 2014, 2013, 2006 being the exceptions. 2013 is one of the worst top 10′s ever, while 2011 gives the 2003 Draft a good run for best of the past 20 years. Just know that as you watch the 2019 NBA Draft, the “experts” and GM’s don’t have any more clue than you watching at home who is actually going to make it and who isn’t. If they did, then Anthony Bennett wouldn’t have been a #1 pick and Giannis wouldn’t have lasted until the 15th pick in the same 2013 Draft..

Sensor Sweep: Drakar, Grey Knights, Witcher 2
Science Fiction (Wired): Conventional wisdom holds that science fiction was written almost exclusively by men until the advent of feminism in the 1960s and ’70s. But when Lisa Yaszek, who teaches science fiction studies at Georgia Tech, went digging through old magazines, she discovered a very different story.
Tolkien (Daily Mail): In a 1937 letter to an Oxford colleague, Professor John Ronald Reuel Tolkien confessed that he didn’t much care for The Hobbit, one of his already popular works that was about to go into its second printing.
He wrote: ‘I don’t much approve of The Hobbit myself, prefering my own mythology (which is just touched on) with its consistent nomenclature … and organized history, to this rabble of Eddaic-named dwarves out of Voluspa, newfangled hobbits and gollums (invented in an idle hour) and Anglo-Saxon runes.’
Authors (Davy Crockett’s Almanac): If you really want to know Robert E. Howard, you’re out of luck. But the closest you’ll ever get (barring the invention of a time machine) is this lengthy memoir by his almost-girlfriend Novalyne Price.
The two became friends when she took a teaching job at the high school in Cross Plains, Texas in August 1934, and spent a lot of time together until July of the next year, when he found out she was dating his friend Truett Vinson. But their friendship continued, albeit less frequently, until he shot himself in June 1936.
Authors (Adventures Fantastic): John D. MacDonald was born on this date, July 24, in 1916.  I’ve written about him before (see here, here, and here).
Although he’s probably best remembered today as the author of the Travis McGee series of men’s adventure thrillers, MacDonald learned his chops in the pulps, albeit during the tail end of the pulp era.
Games (Follow Me and Die): As an RPG content producer, I’ve spent a lot of money on fancy tools, some that require more money when versions are updated, etc. Check out episode 77 of my podcast where I discuss this topic*.
Several years ago, I was very big into Linux and free and open source software. I’m still a proponent of free and open source software, I just had issues in the past finding Linux based solutions for some of my workflows.
Publishing (Original Edition Fantasy): Call for Articles!
I’m putting together a one-shot homage to classic 80’s Dragon magazine. It will be called Drakar and have the look, feel, and layout of that era. Including articles, ads, even humor!
In order to fill this up I’m looking for articles from the OSR. It can be an original article, an excerpt from your homebrewed RPG or campaign. This issue is going to be generally Norse Mythology themed, but just like those old magazines it will be a hodge-podge of cool stuff, so anything you enter that is RPG related will work. No bias towards any particular system.
Miniatures (Tower of Zenopus): I really really like the Grey Knights lore in 40K I remember them being an interesting unit in Rogue trader and then in Epic where they were a single unit you might take if fighting Chaos but not an army on their own. Then came 5th edition when they received a separate Codex and suddenly they were a whole separate force with some really nice miniatures all their own. It’s a great look, a great theme, and a great concept for an elite strike force in the game.
Authors (DMR Books): I consider REH to be one of the greatest fantasists of all time and I am not alone.  I have admired and been inspired by both his prose and his poetry but I also appreciate where his writings have led me.   If I had never read Howard, I might never have read the horror of Clark Ashton Smith, the histories of Harold Lamb or the adventures shrouded in the mysteries of the East penned by Talbot Mundy.  If you take a look at the books listed in Robert E. Howard’s personal library, you will find thirteen works by Talbot Mundy, so I think I can say that he was an influence on REH.
RPG (Black Gate): Funny how some of us predicted video games would virtually wipe out RPGs and board games, and yet here we are. We have entered a golden age of tabletop gaming. So many new games, with great graphics, great playing pieces, and game mechanics that expand on systems that have been tried, tested, and improved on for decades.
I’m certainly not the first to make this observation, but much of this game renaissance must be thanks to funding platforms like Kickstarter. No longer limited to what a few big corporations deemed were mass-marketable enough to release to retail outlets, we could now team up with a few hundred or a few thousand other people who wanted what we did and JUST PAY TO MAKE IT HAPPEN OURSELVES.
Fiction (Gravetapping): In the late 1960s and early 1970s Michael Crichton published eight thrillers under the pseudonym John Lange.  The Lange novels are something very different than the science fiction Michael Crichton became famous for writing. They are thrillers more in the vein of Desmond Bagley, Jack Higgins, and Gavin Lyall, and I like them much more than Crichton’s big bestsellers.
Celluloid (Future War Stories): Since the first hunting stories where told around a fire, humans have been captivated by tales of combat and heroism. That just who we are at our core and those primitive stories have been upgraded due to the progress of technology and scientific understanding to forge the genre of science fiction. Today, tales of space warriors battling among the stars with laser swords and ray-guns are commonplace within the realm of popular entertainment. When most think of science fiction combat scenes from sci-fi on TV, in anime, video games, or in popular films; they imagine those large-scale space battles with starships trading colorful bolts of killer light.
Games (Player None): The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings (2011), based on the works of Andrzej Sapkowski, developed and published by CD Projekt RED
Geralt of Rivia wakes up shackled in a dungeon. He is there to be interrogated by one Vernon Roache, the head of the special forces of Temaria. The reason for this visit in the darkest of dungeons is told in flashbacks during the tutorial of the game: Geralt is under suspicions of killing the king of Temaria, Foltest. He is innocent to the crime, as the killer is a skilled assassin Letho, a bear of a man, who is working with Scoia’tael guerillas who are more than happy to aid a human causing havoc among his own people.
Celluloid (Running Iron Report): The Lighthorsemen is a movie about the Australian Light Horse regiments and their famous charge on Beersheba in Palestine in World War I. The taking of Beersheeba turned the Ottoman Turks out of their defensive line in Palestine and marked a turning point in the campaign in the Middle East.
For the purposes of this essay; the charge is almost an anticlimactic moment.
I wish that a different way could be found to teach history in our schools. History teaching incorporating the Australian Light Horse would be a lot more exciting than memorizing meaningless acts and dates. The “Australian Light Horse” — now there is phrase to stir the blood of any young man.

Hey folks! I don’t know if anyone listens to the Happy Jacks RPG Podcast, but I find it to be a wonderfully helpful resource for running my games. I imagine that if I didn’t listen to it, I’d be infinitely worse than I already am.
The host of the show, Stu Venable, had been working on his own RPG to reflect his personal RPG philosophy -- player-driven story arcs, the yes-and improv philosophy, and intuitive mechanics. He’s finally finished the rules after years of work and play-testing. And the rules are available at the link above, for free! You’re encouraged to donate to his work to speed his production of supplemental materials (settings, mostly, and. we’ll hope, a few magic systems).
The game itself is short (~70 pages) and simple, setting-agnostic, and highly customizable. In fact, throughout the entire game book there are “dials” which are tweaks to adjust the system to match the tone of the campaign. An example of the customization: I’m going to rework the death mechanics to make it a little more brutal. I’ll probably make a post about it later on.
Anyway, I thought I would support Stu and help spread the word to my maybe 1 reader about the system. You may expect a few future posts about Moment of Truth as I endeavor to work on a campaign guide and rope together a few players for a game. Wish me luck.

I feel like not enough people know about the importance of X Cards
I saw some conversation about D&D that threw up a red flag, and thought I should make my own post. They talk about this a lot on Happy Jack’s RPG Podcast, but I thought I would reiterate here. Essentially, you give everyone a card with a big X on it, it can be literal or metaphorical (I’ve never actually been given a physical card to hold but I know people who have), and at any point in the game, for whatever reason, a person can throw down their X card as a way of saying “I am uncomfortable with this, please stop right now.” No explanation needed. At that point, everyone stops whatever triggered it -usually a topic of discussion, but sometimes a minor plot point- and moves on.
I would like to reiterate, that you do not ever need to explain the reasoning behind using your X card. Everyone gets one, and you can use it as many times as you need to, to ensure that everyone is having a good time.
We’ve all been in that situation where a group falls apart because of hidden discomfort, and we all wish that we could have known about it ahead of time, so that we could do something about it. This is an extremely effective way of doing that.
If you are a GM, it is important to establish a culture of trust and camaraderie in your group. This is a game, we should all be having fun! As a player it is important to speak up about what’s bothering you, and to respect other people’s boundaries. You are just as responsible for your own experience as everyone else at the table.
And remember, if someone asks you to stop, they don’t owe you an explanation, but you owe them the respect of listening when they rescind their consent. Use your X Cards.

Omg. What if. There was an RPG designed to get people to exercise. And you used exercise equipment instead of dice. And to make a strength check you had to do a bench press or something like it. And a running check actually involved getting on a treadmill. Or there were particular exercises for each skill check. And each character had different exercise-level-to-effect to account for different levels of fitness.
