A Closer Look at Kazuki’s Ground Rules - Buddy Daddies - Episode 11 - SPOILERS!
In Episode 11, Kazuki lays down some ground rules for how their household is going to be run. This is such an important aspect of living together with someone, especially when you are also raising a child together. It helps with setting boundaries, expectations, and helping maintain a healthy household that doesn’t run into burn out, resentment, or miscommunication as often (since these things will still happen, no matter how well planned or laid out something may be).
So, let’s take a closer look at what ground rules Kazuki actually sets, to whom, and what those ground rules say and reflect about Kazuki and Rei’s dynamic, strengths, and weaknesses.
Tumblr media
We take turns tucking her in.
He leads in with a rule for something that we have seen both of them do, and which is likely at the forefront of his mind because of Miri sleeping in his arms. The rule is for both himself and Rei to follow, and provides them with a very simple and general schedule - taking turns.
Since we see Kazuki tucking her in during this episode, and the ground rules are being made in this episode, it would then be Rei’s turn the next night.
Tumblr media
Don’t skip out on taking her back and forth from daycare.
This is ground rule is aimed specifically at Rei. We’ve seen Rei take Miri to school before. Once when Miri demanded it because she was upset with Kazuki Papa, so there wasn’t much of an option (E6) and the other when Kazuki wasn’t present, so Rei had to take her (E7).
Rei is shown being more active and better with helping out after Episode 7, but we still don’t know to what extent exactly. Given the fact that Kazuki mentions this and how it seems Rei has either gotten out of taking her before when he should have or just hasn’t been as consistent with it as Kazuki would like, this ground rule helps with that.
Tumblr media
Same with tooth-brushing after the bath.
In the OP, we see both Rei and Miri brushing their teeth together. So we know that Rei does this with Miri, but perhaps not as consistently as he should. This ground rule sounds like it is for Rei’s benefit as much as it is for Miri’s. Helping Rei develop good habits that he can stick to.
Tumblr media
I’ll cook, but you need to help clean.
Kazuki is the naturally better cook. Rei has developed enough cooking skills now that he can put together something if he has to (either for himself or for Miri), but cooking definitely isn’t his strong suit. It is Kazuki’s though. Kazuki seems to get a lot of enjoyment out of cooking too. He prides himself on it.
In Episode 9, we can see how that kind of makes Rei feel a bit embarrassed and discouraged, since he just doesn’t seem to have a more natural talent for cooking like Kazuki does. Rei’s food choices are also more questionable and lean into unhealthy choices (candy filled rice balls).
We’ve seen Kazuki clean, but it definitely seems to be more out of necessity and because he has to, not necessarily because he gets any enjoyment from doing so. This is a smart decision. Since Kazuki doesn’t seem to be extremely talented in this area of housework, it doesn’t make a situation where Rei might end up feeling inadequate or discouraged to continue, which cooking would. This, instead, gives Rei a housework based skill that he has room to grow in, all on his own, and at his own pace, and then become skilled at over time without anything for him to measure up against.
Cleaning is also one of the best household skills for quick and easy encouragement and self-motivation, since it is a change in a space and area that you can see happen right before your eyes, by your own hands.
Also, Japanese society as a whole tends to favor generalists over specialists. There is an expectation that someone at a job or at school will learn how to do everything, so that anyone, at any time, can help out. But...that’s such a heavy burden and real life usually doesn’t work out like that. We see this with Miss Anna too. She’s expected to be able to play the piano as a daycare worker, and does seem to know how to do so on a basic level, but she isn’t specialized in it.
We are seeing a similar thing here with Kazuki’s rules. He’s specifying what areas the two of them will be in charge of and take over, what areas the two of them will share, and one rule that is very specific to Rei. Afterall, sometimes a 50/50 split doesn’t always work for every household.
Tumblr media
No washing dishes until the dry ones are put away.
Here we see that “cleaning” is extending to “washing the dishes.” Kazuki gives Rei some advice here, showing that he is willing to help Rei learn in this area.
Tumblr media
When you run the vacuum, move anything on the floor out of the way.
This bit of advice is something that Kazuki learned when Miri wanted to help back in Episode 4. We see her trying to vacuum and clothes getting sucked up, lol.
Tumblr media
I read online that kids pick up on little stuff like that.
This is true. Kids learn by example. When I worked as an ALT in Japan, the main thing they taught us was to remember that kids (of all ages) will mimic your behave, so act responsibly when you are out and about. That’s what we see Kazuki talking about here.
I also like that Kazuki mentions that he read about it online. In the shot we get of his room in this week’s episode (E11), we see that Kazuki has a lot of books, so he does like reading. It’s nice to see that he is reading up on how to improve and be better as a parent.
Tumblr media
Is game time---
The only time we hear Rei talk during this household rules setting scene is when he asks about his games. I actually like that Rei is the one that brings it up instead of Kazuki just laying down the rule along with the others. It shows that Rei likely expected that there would be some rule connected to his game playing. Of course, it also makes for a great comedy setup.
Tumblr media
One hour per day!
He likely was not expecting that though! lol I can see this being something that gets negotiated more in the future, especially if Rei really does stick to the other household rules well.

Backstory swap:
- Gillion is a young triton who was abandoned near the surface when he was very young. He's adopted by Finn, a pirate triton of the Black Rose Pirates. A few years later, the Midnight Rose sinks, and Gillion spends the next decade promising to himself he'll find them, he'll get them back. He can't have been the only survivor... right?
- Chip is the son of a well known naval officer, but has lost interest in the navy after the mysterious death of his sister close friend, Elizabeth. Chip is allowed by the Navy to investigate her death by going undercover as a pirate - and the chance strikes when he meets Gillion Tidestrider at his mother's tavern.
- Jay Ferin is the prophesied Chosen One, and has been raised as such from a very young age. Just recently, she's found herself banished from her home of Featherbrook - something about attacking a diplomat of the Undersea? - and stranded in the ocean on a small ship. She's picked up by a couple of pirates, and vows to earn her way back into Featherbrook by doing good deeds elsewhere.
- They run into Caspian, a water genasi warlock who entraps Jay in an owed favor to save an island; Edyn, captain of the Goodberry pirates and sister of Gillion whom he thought was long dead; Niklaus, as Edyn's right hand man; and of course, Edyn's woman on the inside of the Navy, Ava Ferin - Jay's older sister.

PSA:
Do not be afraid to write dark material! Do not be afraid to have evil characters do irredeemable things! Remember to be kind to muns who do write this kind of content too. Remember, writing the material is not the same as fetishizing, romanticizing it, or condoning it in the real world!

The skateboarding scene in Palestine is one of our most unique yet powerful forms of protest and resistance against the illegal Israeli occupation. Skateboarding in Palestine is far more than a sport or hobby; it is a form of resistance and empowerment. Riding a skateboard might seem like a simple act - but to Palestinians, it is a way to express their identity, defy oppressive forces, and reclaim agency over their bodies, land, and rights to movement.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Skateboarding in Palestine first gained popularity in the early 2000s in the West Bank. Palestinian skaters took matters into their own hands, constructing makeshift skate parks in abandoned buildings and empty lots. These spaces became more than recreational areas; they became symbols of empowerment and resistance for Palestinian youth. This act was a unique form of protest by allowing Palestinians to reclaim public spaces that were often damaged due to the occupation forces. In a land where movement is restricted and access to certain areas is limited, Palestinian skaters transformed overlooked spaces into vibrant skate parks. The act of reclaiming these spaces was a way to peacefully assert their right to challenge the limitations imposed upon them when it came to the use of public areas. Palestinians will not be confined or silenced by the occupation, and skateboarding is one of the many ways this sentiment is showcased.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Organizations and initiatives, such as SkatePal, have played a crucial role in supporting and developing the skateboarding scene in Palestine by building skateparks, providing equipment, and offering lessons. Initiatives like this create a safe space for young Palestinians who are often forced to give up a lot of their childhood joy to the occupation. Skateboarding fosters a much needed sense of community that Israel has tried to stifle for decades. Palestinian skaters also participate in global competitions and events to showcase their skills on an international stage!! This raises awareness about their ongoing struggles and, more importantly, their unwavering resilience.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Skateboarding serves as a means for Palestinians to express their identity and existence. In a genocidal, oppressive state, where freedom, creativity, and individuality are often suppressed, the act of skateboarding itself becomes a powerful statement of resistance against the occupation. It visually represents qualities that are intrinsic to the Palestinian spirit. Skateboarding empowers Palestinian youth by providing them control over their bodies and movement in their land.
In Palestine, skateboarding is not just a sport - it is a culture of reclaiming ownership, fostering confidence, independence, and resilience.

What’s the Message Being Made? - Buddy Daddies Episode 11 SPOILERS!!!
Over on r/anime I’m seeing a number of people having issues with Misaki’s death - fridging. And I do get that. But I also try to look at each situation individually to see how they are written and executed and what they may be trying to say, what parallels are being made, etc.
While yes, Misaki’s death does end up furthering the advancement of male character storylines, there are other things to think about as well. Her character wasn’t a simple no-personality. She had depth and complexity and she ended up in a lot of bad situations.
Some would definitely just say that it was her own personal failings, but she was a single mother working at a snack bar to get by and provide. If a system was in place where she could get proper benefits and force child support on the father, she may not have had to work there and get cancer.
A failing of the system that doesn’t support women or children.
Meanwhile, Rei’s father in this week’s episode talks about things being “as they have been,” right. Unchanging. And for him, that means using violence to control.
Yuzuko
Satoru’s Significant Other
Misaki
They were all women. They were all targeted and killed by this unchanging violence. This traditional household and traditional values. Kazuki and Rei are specifically shown wanting to change and ultimately escape from that unchanging tradition and violence that has resulted in the death of so many people. Most of the male targets are nameless and hold no real personality or sense of identity in any way, but the three targets that we see getting names and/or some actual background and depth to them are the three women above.
This isn’t a coincidence. Especially since all three of those women were killed because of the threat they posed to this tradition and violence found in this male dominated Organization. We haven’t seen a single female hitman.
Kazuki and Rei are fathers to a little girl. They want to leave so she doesn’t have to be touched by this Organization, its ideals, and the consequences of it.
That’s the messaging that I’m getting so far from the series. The last episode might change things. But, for now, I’m okay with the choices they’ve made in regards to Misaki and how they’ve handled things so far in regards to her specifically.
It’s tragic, but they are hitmen.

Apparently this needs to be said so
Forgetting things is morally neutral! Memory issues are morally neutral!
You're not a bad person if you...
forget things quickly
forget people
can't remember entire stages of your life
can't remember important things
can remember some things very well and forget other things all the time
can't remember things (or anything!) about your interests
forget to eat, sleep, go to the bathroom, etc
forget to reply to texts
remember things and immediately forget them again
can't remember birthdays, events, etc
frequently answer 'I forgot' to questions
can't retain new information
forget things you used to know
only remember things when it's too late
have vague, distorted and/or unreliable memories
depend on others to know how an event you were in played out
have other symptoms that are worsened by memory issues and vice versa
... and anything else I might have missed!

Doctor red flags:
-Mentions weight loss, exercise, nutrition, mental wellness, before any physical examination/testing
-interrupts you
-tries to rush the appointment
-laughs at you
-says you're too young
-Touches you without warning or asking for consent (common with older male doctors unfortunately, but is becoming less common)
-accuses you of self dxing/mentions dr. Google
-mentions anything about powering through the pain
Do not be afraid to drop a doctor/caregiver and see a new one. Doctor shopping is a term made by ableds who believe every doctor is perfect. Your health is precious and you should only trust those you're comfortable with to take care of it. Do not feel bad about offending the doctor. They do not care. They won't harass you or question you (if they do then that's..probably illegal). I know its hard with some insurances or lesser served areas so don't feel bad if you can't, but if you have the option to do so do not be afraid.
Extra tip: Most doctors will behave themselves if you bring an advocate. Even just having a friend sit quietly will help.

I don't know why, but I like the idea of humans being to aliens, what cats are to humans...
Alien1: hey, when did you hire a human?
Alien 2: we didn't. They just wandered aboard one day, saying they wanted to "hitch a ride." Then they never left. I think they like it here.
Alien 1: the human distribution system has chosen.
***
Alien stares at the human, who has climbed up a very high shelving unit.
Alien: Human, get down before you hurt yourself.
The humans response is to climb higher.
***
Alien is secretly filming their human, who is spaced out and just staring at nothing.
Alien (whispering): I think the human is about to intercept the brain cell. (Laughter) don't worry human, if it tingles that means it's working.
