Fay Dunbar cannot exist in my head without Death. This is, honestly, a kind of interesting side effect of picking her out as the third sibling protag in NOPC. In NOPC, a lot of her growth is around being dead, around having been violently murdered and then just as violently ripped back to the living world by Harry's desperation.
Okay, you say, so that's one au, now what?
But NOPC is such a LARGE au, that it's really not "just one au". I've spent years rounding out these characters and picking their arcs and dynamics. Fay Dunbar is instrinctically linked to this version of herself, now. Faith Dunbar-Black IS Fay Dunbar, and that carries into any other au.
In DMFD, Fay is just as bright, she still lives above a morgue, but now she's the adopted kid and her parents don't foster. She goes out and befriends ghosts and hunts down horcruxes on ACCIDENT and is still best friends with Harry, even though it's an entirely separate au with a completely different premise and genre.
In Anerythristic, Fay is bright and violent and traumatized, but it wasn't HER who was viciously murdered, it was her sister, and she grows up, yes, but she never RECOVERS from that.
Even in TRTR, where she's barely showed up, she still operates as usual - incredibly bright and high energy, because she knows that if she's loud enough, people will ignore her. Her dad is still a mortician. Her childhood puzzles were piecing skulls back together for funerals.
No matter the au, if I'm writing Fay, she is Tied To Death. She is clever, and she is a liar. She is loud because if people see what she shows them, they won't look for what she doesn't. She is friendly and affectionate but she knows without trying the fastest way to kill you, and she's not above Doing So.

"Done is a battle on the dragon black, Our champion Christ has crushed his force; The gates of hell broke with a crack, The sign is raised of the triumphal cross, The devils keen with hideous voice, The souls are saved and to bliss can go, With blood, our ransom Christ has paid: The Lord has risen from the grave.
Defeated is Lucifer, that deadly dragon, The cruel serpent with the mortal sting; The keen old tiger, with his teeth all bared, Has lain in wait for us so long, Thinking to grip us in his claws strong; The merciful Lord willed it not so, Regarding that prey he made him fail. The Lord is risen from the grave.
He for our sake that suffered to be slain, And like a lamb in sacrifice was gi'en, Is like a lion risen up again, And like a giant raises on high; Aurora blooms, radiant and bright, Aloft the glorious Apollo ascends, From night departs the blissful day: The Lord is risen from the grave.
The great victor is risen high again, That for us to death was wounded; The sun that waxed all pale shines bright, And, darkness cleared, our faith's re-found; The knell of mercy from heaven sounds, Christians are delivered of their woe, All error is of now put straight: The Lord is risen from the grave.
The foe is chased, the battle is done, The prison broken, jailors all fled; The war is gone, confirmed is the peace, The fetters loosed and dungeon emptied, The ransom made, the prisoners redeemed; The field is won, o'ercome is the foe, Despoiled of the treasure that he stole: The Lord is risen from the grave."

Hi! How are you? Can u request one with Liam Dunbar, kinda like the same setup as Hayden at the end of s5 but instead is reader and human and Scott has to turn her bc the beast hurt her and it ends fluffy please :)
Tumblr media
‘this is the beginning’ - Liam Dunbar
trigger warning:violence, anger, angst, fluff, being given the bite, hurt, near death experiences.
requested: yes! hey, i’m sorry this took me so long, i haven’t watched s5 of teen wolf in a very long time but i have done my best to make this as accurate with the timeline as i can, i hope you enjoy!
**
you and liam had a complicated relationship, not in the way most people would think. but you’d known scott and stiles since before liam was turned, you’d known about the supernatural. and scott had begged for your help when he bit liam, since you were closer to his age then scott and stiles. liam didn’t trust you for a while after that, and with his IED, he was terrified of hurting you. which he did almost hurt you many times during the beginning, almost is the key word there. with his IED and now having to control himself, he was struggling. it had been a while now, he pretty much had full control but some days were harder then others. and considering your new found relationship, he was more terrified of hurting you then before. he loved how much faith you had in him, well in everything most of the time. you were the thing that distracted him from the horrors he sees. he loved you, but he’d never told you that..yet.
you’d been dealing with the supernatural since the beginning when it all started with scott, being his sister cause a lot more issues then needed. you’d seen a lot, from a young age. you were older then liam, but younger then your brother had his dork of a best friend. scott trusted liam with you now, which was good, and stiles was warming up to him which was also good.
**
now a whole new issue had risen in beacon hills. the beast of gevaudan. you’d all now been dealing with this for a few weeks, the current plan was unraveling, and not in a good way. the beast was in the school, obviously it was only scotts pack left since it was past 9pm. but you were supposed to stay with either your boyfriend or your brother. but somehow everything got mixed up. one minute you were with liam, the next minute you turned around and you were alone. your phone wasn’t working, you didn’t want to cause any attention to yourself so you didn’t shout out for anyone, you just carefully attempted to find someone. sneaking through the corridors until you heard foot steps, but you knew straight away they were not human. you cursed under your breath and ran to the boys locker room to hide.
you hid behind lockers, your heart was beating so fast you could feel it in your throat, would would scott and stiles do? you couldn’t think, you just hid. you could’ve shouted out to someone, with werewolf hearing they could probably find you. but that would also give your location to the beast, so you decided against it. your breathing was uneven has you heard the beast getting closer, that was when you heard the crash of it coming through the boys locker room. you saw it. it knew where you were you didn’t stand a chance.
“SCOTT! LIAM!” you screamed at the top of your lungs as the beast quickly made its way towards you, you tried to outrun it but there was no where to go. the little locker room did no provide much protection. then you felt searing pain down your back, gashes. you felt your blood gushing down your back, as you fell to the floor, the beast threw you across the room as you heard your brothers voice echoing in the room followed by your boyfriend. as everything went black.
**
once the beast had been defeated by your brother, liam was cradling you in his arms pleading for you to wake up, begging that you would be okay. scott ran over once he had finally dealt with the beast.
“you’ve gotta change her.. she’s dying scott. please!” liam begged, scott looked you over, he didn’t want to burden you with the pain of being a werewolf, but he also couldn’t bare to loose you, your mom would be a mess, scott would be a mess, liam, stiles, lydia, youre the glue you hold everyone together.
“what are you waiting for?! do it!” liam yelled, and he did your brother but your arm, the only thing now was if you were strong enough to get through this, strong enough to survive the bite.
**
you woke in your room, liam sat next to you, scott and stiles piled on the floor next to your bed dead asleep waiting for you to wake up, liam sat next to you head drooping half asleep no aware you’d woken.
“liam?” you whispered, and his head shot up straight away, his features laced with happiness he bring you into a hug smiling straight away, you winced and he pulled away apologising.
“what happened? how long have they been asleep for?” you asked, liam sighed, he’d have to explain what you now are. he didn’t know how’d you react.
“they’ve been asleep since we made sure you were okay… baby- you got hurt, really bad. we didn’t have any other option scott gave you the bite. and you’re now healing.” liam explained, you didn’t know what to say, you didn’t know how to react, your eyes filled with tears and liam pulled you into him.
“i’m so sorry.. i’m so sorry, youll get through this okay? you’ve got all of us.if i can do it you most definitely can too. this is a new beginning okay? at least scott and stiles didn’t kidnap you and tie you to a chair? that’s a good start.” liam chuckles as he remembered what happened when he had been turned. you cracked a smile at this and he kisses your forehead.
“it’ll be okay, i got you. me and you forever okay? now get some rest darling” he smiled, you nodded resting your head on his chest he gently began to play with your hair in hopes you wouldn’t worry too much about the upcoming months.
**
this is so bad, i am so sorry, i still hope you enjoyed i hate this one so much lmao. please keep sending me requests!!

A-T-2 416 Compass Point
Last post concerning Chris Blackwell's Compass Point Studios in Nassau, Bahamas, other posts include Gwen Guthrie A-T-2 387, Roxy Music A-T-2 308, Black Uhuru A-T-2 108, Wally Badarou A-T-2 105, Grace Jones A-T-2 104
Love Rhino is the debut solo album from Adrian Belew. He'd started out in Frank Zappa's live band, caught the attention of Brian Eno who got him work with David Bowie and then Talking Heads, touring, providing solos on Remain In The Light, playing on David Byrne's soundtrack The Catherine Wheel, Jerry Harrison's debut The Red And The Black and as a member of Tom Tom Club. his rising profile had gotten him a deal with Island so while recording Tom Tom Club's debut album at Compass Point members of Belew's band GaGa joined them and they recorded what was to become his debut album in parallel. Adrian Belew joined the King Crimson in 1981 and stayed with them until 2009

Mr Isaacs recorded the Night Nurse album at Compass Point with The Roots Radics and Wally Badarou on synthesizer. The dub is by Paul "Groucho" Smykle, you can find legit versions of four dubs by Paul "Groucho" Smykle (who also did the extended mixes in 1982) on the 2002 remaster CD
Gregory Isaacs - Night Nurse Dub

Sly Dunbar releases his third solo album Sly-Go-Ville in 1982. It features the hit Hot You're Hot about being hot. The last track is Unmetered Taxi which is based on Prophecy by Little Roy

Barry Reynolds was a member of the Compass Point All Stars. I think beginning with Broken English he also had a long musical relationship with Marianne Faithful, he co-wrote the title track, Witches' Song, Why D'Ya Do It and is the writer of Guilt on that album. In 1982 Barry Reynolds records a solo album, the title track and single is a cover of Dan Hicks And His Hot Licks 1969 track I Scare Myself (which is a ballsy undertaking imo, Thomas Dolby has a go in 1984)

since i’ve done a decent amount of plotting so far, this is my attempt to try and get ahead of the curve, giving myself enough time draft up starters before the event truly starts - consider this an event starter call. obviously some of these levels will change as the event goes on, so feel free to request whatever you want for these guys on their starting levels. i also have included which of my characters are open for texting threads, since some of them probably will be preoccupied with everything else going on. there’s no cap on this right now, i just ask that you let me know who you would like the starters for! and as always, if you’d like to plot more, please just message me!

We'll Take Our World By Storm Masterpost
Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry has educated more than seventy percent of the last three centuries’ historical figures. Foster siblings Harry Potter and Fay Dunbar-Black are beginning their first year there this fall, and they have plans. They’re not the only ones, though, and it seems like all plans have one kink in common - Harry’s twin brother, Connor; known for not dying when he should’ve.
[or at least, known for being caught not dying.]
Connor would like to go on record saying he’d love to stay out of this too. Between suspicious teachers, learning magic, the castle trying to murder their Ravenclaws, and Harry’s biological family trying to reconnect after ten years, everyone is busy. At least one thing hasn’t changed: the Wizarding World won’t know what hit them.

We should also criticize the notion that social workers and the way they function under capitalism are fundamentally good or neutral in regards to the settler-capitalist project. Even when we look at how Indigenous children are disproportionately represented in Child and Family Services where they’re often taken away from there homes and families, it’s evident that it isn’t merely the police that enforce Canadian settler-colonialism. Racist practices undoubtedly permeate every aspect of Canada, so merely replacing the police with social workers still doesn’t get to the root of the matter whatsoever. Even if the bourgeois state chose to replace police with social work policing (which seems highly unlikely since the bourgeoisie needs its police to protect its dominance), we can imagine social workers––funded by the still existing settler-capitalist state––would need to draw on some form of coercion if that state still existed and thus was interested in reproducing its dominance. Here, it is worth recalling that scholars such as Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz, Patrick Wolfe, and others have pointed out that unofficial settler-colonial militias (in the form of filibusters, scalp-hunters, mercenaries, and the like) formed the core the colonial garrison responsible for violent expansion, mixing with the much smaller “official” repressive bodies. Such settler militias have not disappeared; their faithful white supremacist descendants would be more than happy to rally as a community to violently assist “social work” policing.
In addressing the abolitionist sentiments, this aim is closer to a revolutionary goal––and the slogan that arose from the US mass revolts, “Abolish the Police”, should thus be supported as the expression of the masses in revolt––but it still can fall back into reformist practices due to its idealism. What this sentiment sometimes fails to recognize (though other times, to be clear, it does seem cognizant of this) is that in order for prisons and police to be “abolished”, we would have to be transitioning to a completely different mode of production and exchange (socialism/communism) where the contradictions of capitalism are completely removed or at least significantly mitigated. On the one hand, in order to remove these contradictions there needs to be more than a spontaneous movement and mass revolt; there needs to be revolutionary vanguard organization, theoretically united, that has deep roots in the masses and thus can channel the revolt into the overthrow and smashing of the bourgeois state. Such an organization does not exist, as yet, in the US or Canada, though there are many groups (including ourselves) that seek to develop such an organization. On the other hand, the question of the state and the transition to communism plays a key role.
This transition to communism (the transition from capitalism to communism being socialism) would entail the necessary repression of capitalist forces that do not simply lay their weapons down and disappear once socialism is established and the old state smashed––or, to use the abolitionist language, abolished––something, again, that can only be done through the systematic and programmatic organization of the mass movement according to the vanguard party, the people’s army, and the united front. These are insights we have inherited from the world-shaping revolutions of the past. Hence, the history of the communist movement in the past century contains key lessons, and one of the most pressing ones is that capitalism and its cohorts do not disappear overnight, even if you have a revolution. Counter-revolution is always a threat. The history of the USSR and China in the socialist era also show us that a capitalist class can even develop within the proletarian party itself, hence the necessity to repress said forces – and yes, sometimes with violence. History shows us that reactionary forces are more than willing to blackmail, infiltrate, and literally kill any anti-capitalist revolutionary movement and its leadership.

A Faithful Reading Partner: a story from a Hakka village by SuHua Huang A welcome addition to dual language literature, the story is about growing up among the Hakka people in Taiwan. In order to succeed, it is important for children to have a reading partner. But in this case, it is a dog with which the children develop deep friendships as they share their books with him. A sub-current to the main story is one of being a minority within a minority and success, which though longed for, inevitably contains sadness wrapped within its joy. Presented to UCF Libraries by the Chinese American Community in Orlando. Suggested by Sai Deng, Acquisitions & Collection Services
Discrimination and Disparities by Thomas Sowell Challenges believers in such one-factor explanations of economic outcome differences as discrimination, exploitation or genetics. It offers its own new analysis, based on an entirely different approach--and backed up with empirical evidence from around the world. The point is not to recommend some particular policy "fix", but to clarify why so many policy fixes have turned out to be counterproductive, and to expose some seemingly invincible fallacies behind many of those policies Suggested by Cynthia Kisby, Administration
Equality and Diversity: phenomenological investigations of prejudice and discrimination by Michael D. Barber Examples of prejudice against Jews, women, African Americans, and other minority groups are reported almost daily by the media. Despite educational programs to counteract prejudicial attitudes, this seemingly intractable problem remains an ongoing concern, not only in the United States but throughout the world. It is an interesting and often overlooked fact that the subject of prejudice has been the focus of major works by three prominent philosophers in the phenomenological tradition, works that still offer many insights into contemporary attempts to understand this social problem. Michael Barber examines this striking convergence of interests by these three philosophers and explores the significance of phenomenology for analyzing prejudice as expressed in anti-Semitism, sexism, and racism. Suggested by Sandy Avila, Research & Information Services
Hacking Diversity: the politics of inclusion in open technology cultures by Christina Dunbar-Hester We regularly read and hear exhortations for women to take up positions in STEM. The call comes from both government and private corporate circles, and it also emanates from enthusiasts for free and open source software (FOSS), i.e. software that anyone is free to use, copy, study, and change in any way. Ironically, rate of participation in FOSS-related work is far lower than in other areas of computing. A 2002 European Union study showed that fewer than 2 percent of software developers in the FOSS world were women. This book is an ethnographic investigation of efforts to improve the diversity in software and hackerspace communities, with particular attention paid to gender diversity advocacy. Suggested by Megan Haught, Student Learning & Engagement/Research & Information Services
Mothers Work: confronting the Mommy Wars, raising children, and working for social change by Michelle Napierski-Prancl Through a series of focus group interviews and an analysis of the media and popular culture, Napierski-Prancl explores the institution of motherhood and the arenas in which mothering occurs while analyzing how mothers feel about themselves, each other, and the culture that situates them against one another. Suggested by Megan Haught, Student Learning & Engagement/Research & Information Services
On the Freedom Side: how five decades of youth activists have remixed American history by Wesley C. Hogan As Wesley C. Hogan sees it, the future of democracy belongs to young people. While today's generation of leaders confronts a daunting array of existential challenges, increasingly it is young people in the United States and around the world who are finding new ways of belonging, collaboration, and survival. That reality forms the backbone of this book, as Hogan documents and assesses young people's interventions in the American fight for democracy and its ideals. As Hogan reveals, the the civil rights movement has often been carried forward by young people at the margins of power and wealth in U.S. society. This book foregrounds their voices and gathers their inventions--not in a comprehensive survey, but as an activist mix tape--with lively, fresh perspectives on the promise of twenty-first-century U.S. democracy.  Pippa Park Raises Her Game by Erin Yun Life is full of great expectations for Korean American Pippa Park. It seems like everyone, from her family to the other kids at school, has a plan for how her life should look. So when Pippa gets a mysterious basketball scholarship to Lakeview Private, she jumps at the chance to reinvent herself by following the "Rules of Cool." At Lakeview, Pippa juggles old and new friends, an unrequited crush, and the pressure to perform academically and athletically while keeping her past and her family's laundromat a secret from her elite new classmates. But when Pippa begins to receive a string of hateful, anonymous messages via social media, her carefully built persona is threatened. As things begin to spiral out of control, Pippa discovers the real reason she was admitted to Lakeview and wonders if she can keep her old and new lives separate, or if she should even try. Presented to UCF Libraries by the Chinese American Community in Orlando. Suggested by Sai Deng, Acquisitions & Collection Services
Sexuality, Equality, and Diversity by Diane Richardson and Surya Monro Investigating the dynamics of identity and sexual citizenship in a changing world, this compelling text explores key debates around human rights and representation, policy and resistance. Incorporating theory with original research, this is a thought-provoking insight into sexuality and diversity in a global age. Suggested by Sandy Avila, Research & Information Services
Shame: how America's past sins have polarized our country by Shelby Steele Part memoir and part meditation on the failed efforts to achieve racial equality in Americathis work advances Shelby Steele's provocative argument that "new liberalism" has done more harm than good. Since the 1960s, overt racism against blacks is almost universally condemned, so much so that racism is no longer, by itself, a prohibitive barrier to black advancement. But African Americans remain at a disadvantage in American society, and Steele lays the blame at the feet of white liberals. According to Steele, liberals have refused to acknowledge the country's progress over the past 50 years, in part because their notions of white guilt and black victimization help preserve their position of power over blacks. Suggested by Cynthia Kisby, Administration
The Boy Who Became a Dragon: a Bruce Lee story by Jim Di Bartolo This book presents a biography of the martial arts legend, describing his childhood in Hong Kong and how it was shaped by World War II, and his success as an international star. Presented to UCF Libraries by the Chinese American Community in Orlando. Suggested by Sai Deng, Acquisitions & Collection Services
This Promise of Change: one girl's story in the fight for school equality by Jo Ann Allen Boyce and Debbie Levy In 1956, one year before federal troops escorted the Little Rock 9 into Central High School, fourteen year old Jo Ann Allen was one of twelve African-American students who broke the color barrier and integrated Clinton High School in Tennessee. At first things went smoothly for the Clinton 12, but then outside agitators interfered, pitting the townspeople against one another. Uneasiness turned into anger, and even the Clinton Twelve themselves wondered if the easier thing to do would be to go back to their old school. This is the heartbreaking and relatable story of her four months thrust into the national spotlight and as a trailblazer in history. Suggested by Ven Basco, Research & Information Services
We Rise, We Resist, We Raise Our Voices edited by Wade Hudson and Cheryl Willis Hudson What do we tell our children when the world seems bleak, and prejudice and racism run rampant? With 96 lavishly designed pages of original art, poetry, and prose, fifty diverse creators lend voice and comfort to young activists. Suggested by Ven Basco, Research & Information Services

Happy September!
So many good books are coming out! Here’s a list of  books I’m looking forward to this month!  (prepare yourself, this is kind of long)
We Are Lost and Found by Helene Dunbar (September 3). It’s queer, it’s about a group of friends, and it’s in the 80s. This seems really emotional and possibly destructive (if you, like me, are the type of person who Perks destroyed).
The Nightjar by Deborah Hewitt (September 3). An urban fantasy story where magical birds called “nightjars” protect human souls. Alice, with her newly discovered powers, is now the only one who can find and protect her best friend's nightjar. Did I mention there’s a secret magical alternate version of London?
There Will Come a Darkness by Katy Rose Pool (September 3). I was lucky enough to read an arc of this, and so can say confidently that it is amazing! If you like ragtag groups, moral grayness, and prophecies, come read this book and talk to me about it, please!
Have a Little Faith in Me by Sonia Hartl (September 3). This is pitched as “Saved” meets “TATBILB”, so obviously I preordered it from my library while screaming on the top of my lungs. Fake dating, probably friends to lovers, and a serious discussion of sex, consent, and religion.
Minor Prophets by Jimmy Cajoleas. (September 10). A horror mystery centered around 2 teens, running away from their deceased mother’s husband, who is trying to adopt them. Seems spooky and wrought with good portrayals of sibling relationships!
His Hideous Heart edited by Dahlia Adler (September 10). An anthology of reimagined Poe stories! If that doesn’t get you excited, I really don’t know what possibly could.
Pet by Akwaeke Emezi (September 10). A fantasy story with a black lead, about tearing down the denial of adults to find the truth. There’s monsters, and friendship, and a creature who comes out of a painting!
Unpregnant by Jenni Hendriks & Ted Caplan (September 10). A timely YA about abortion that also doubles as a roadtrip story! Full of craziness and examination of good vs. bad relationships.
Frankly in Love by David Yoon (September 10). Gotta love the influx of asian rep in YA lately! This is about two Korean-Americans trying to trick their traditional/racist parents by, what? Fake dating of course!
The Babysitters Coven by Kate Williams (September 17). A spin on the babysitter’s club type of story, but with witches. Full of female friendship!
It’s a Whole Spiel edited by Katherine Locke (September 17). Another anthology- this one is all #OwnVoices Jewish stories!
Opiod, Indiana by Brian Allen Carr (September 17). I’ve been waiting for Brian Allen Carr to write something else, so I’m jumping on this coming of age story that seems like a Post-Trump version of Catcher in the Rye.
The Future of Another Timeline by Annale Newitz (September 24). I love a good time travel story! This one intertwines a near future activist, trying to change the past, and a 90s era punk girl who, after assisting in the murder of her best friend’ abusive boyfriend, starts on the path of protecting other women.
Rules for Vanishing by Kate Alice Marshall (September 24). A horror mystery somehow written in a faux-documentary format? After a mysterious text telling Sarah and her friends to “play the game” they willing walk into the forest (camera in tow), determined to get back Sarah’s sister, who disappeared inside it a year ago.
The Monster of Elendhaven by Jennifer Giesbrecht (September 24). A horror novella promising blood and a darkness that twines into your very bones. Seems like the perfect read for those of you already thinking about Halloween.
SEQUELS!
Wayward Son by Rainbow Rowell (September 24). The Carry On sequel we’ve been begging for! Or, at least, I have. Simon has fulfilled his prophecy, ending the threat to the magical world... now what? This is a road trip story sure to be full of friendship, confusion, and that depressing feeling of not knowing what to do with yourself (or, as I call it, your 20s).
Bid My Soul Farewell by Beth Revis (September 24). The sequel to Beth Revis’ amazingly dark and morally gray Give the Dark My Love. If you love dark characters, people's slide from bad to worse, and necromancy and you haven’t already read it, go do yourself a favor and pick up Give the Dark My Love. This book is supposed to push Nedra even further into the dark!

Origin Stories
Looking for truth in foundational narratives on the eve of Indigenous Peoples Day. This sermon was delivered to the UU Church of Silver Spring on October 13, 2019.
Has anyone seen the movie, Captain Marvel? You know I did. The nostalgia for the music of the mid-1990’s alone was enough to get me in the door. I don’t want to spoil it for those who are waiting for a quiet evening to watch it at home, so I’ll try to speak in general terms.
The movie opens with an interstellar super soldier named Vers, who is having trouble with memory, but nevertheless goes out on a mission with her team, part of the Kree empire. Throughout the movie, she learns more about where she comes from, and more about the origins of the conflict with the people she thought were her enemies. Once she has come around to a different understanding of who her people are, the personal qualities she has been criticized for are reframed, and she can draw from them as strengths. This revised worldview moves her to an entirely different sense of her mission in life, as well as a different sense of connecting and belonging.
The paradigm shift that the main character goes through in Captain Marvel reminds me of the paradigm shift that some within U.S. culture could work toward when it comes to observing Indigenous Peoples Day tomorrow. The holiday some still know as Columbus Day told one story of the origins of the United States of America, yet that version of the story is infused with myths and half-truths, and depends on the erasure of the historical and contemporary perspectives of Native Americans, among other groups of people.
The story of this country or this continent is not a single story, and yet I hope we can use the opportunity of this day to add more truth to our understanding of those stories, our understanding of who we are as the residents of this place. To the extent that we can understand ourselves as a people, or as a coalition of peoples, accurate origin stories help us to live into becoming the people we aspire to be. Knowing truly where we have come from as a country will help us to connect with those who share a home or an identity. We can hope that origin stories rooted in honesty will help us heal some of the harms of the past, or at least help us avoid continuing to make the same mistakes.
In her book, An Indigenous Peoples’ History of the United States, Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz suggests that it is the very foundation of how we learn, teach, and think of our history that must be transformed. She writes:
The history of the United States is a history of settler colonialism—the founding of a state based on the ideology of white supremacy, the widespread practice of African slavery, and a policy of genocide and land theft. Those who seek history with an upbeat ending, a history of redemption and reconciliation, may look around and observe that such a conclusion is not visible, not even in utopian dreams of a better society.
Writing US history from an Indigenous peoples’ perspective requires rethinking the consensual national narrative. That narrative is wrong or deficient, not in its facts, dates, or details but rather in its essence. Inherent in the myth we’ve been taught is an embrace of settler colonialism and genocide. The myth persists, not for a lack of free speech or poverty of information but rather for an absence of motivation to ask questions that challenge the core of the scripted narrative of the origin story.
Dunbar-Ortiz goes on to say:
Origin narratives form the vital core of a people’s unifying identity and of the values that guide them. In the United States, the founding and development of the Anglo-American settler-state involves a narrative about Puritan settlers who had a covenant with God to take the land.
Incidentally, An Indigenous Peoples’ History of the United States is this year’s UUA Common Read. A discussion guide is due out later this month for congregations that would like to study it in book groups and other programs. It’s available as an audio book.
The story of European colonization of the place we now call the United States has been framed in one certain way. The way we tell that story has been reinforced with legislation, with racist criteria in academia and in publishing, and with commercialization of holiday traditions. The values we are supposed to gain from the history of 1492 onward is that hard work and commitment to freedom will be rewarded with an endless upward march of progress.
When we look more broadly, that progress doesn’t materialize across the board. The commitment to liberty never applied to everyone, despite what the textbooks have been trying to teach; expansion, prosperity, and freedom to roam for people of European descent came at the expense of the lives and liberty of Indigenous people and enslaved people and their descendants, among others. For those of us who are white, even if we and our direct family ancestors never personally abused or exploited anyone, doors were opened to us and closed to others because of this history of settler-colonialism. To repeat from last week, some are guilty, all of us are responsible for making a change. I am curious to find out how we could come into a new spirit and practice of values if we stop propping up a false narrative about our national origins.
To bring it a little closer to home, let me go back to the second half of that last quote from Dunbar-Ortiz:
In the United States, the founding and development of the Anglo-American settler-state involves a narrative about Puritan settlers who had a covenant with God to take the land.
With the Puritans involved, now we’re getting closer to the origin stories of our faith movement. In the early 20th century, the history of Unitarianism began to be described as a grand sweep of development propelled by devotion to the values of freedom, reason, and tolerance. Following consolidation in 1961 for the United States incarnations of Universalism and Unitarianism, this rubric of freedom, reason, and tolerance was infused into nostalgia looking back on both sides of our history.
This idea that the Pilgrims were an advance team into this continent, divinely ordained to bring religious freedom to these shores, fits right into the Unitarian narrative of freedom, reason, and tolerance. Unitarians in America in the 1800s were direct descendants of Puritans, in church organization and often in family lineage. In telling the story of the Puritans, the themes of violence, stealing, and broken treaties that characterized their presence on this side of the ocean are de-emphasized. Through this silence, the theft of land and liberty is tacitly approved. Crimes against Indigenous people are not supposed to matter if they are part of the project of allowing people of European descent to worship in a way that allows “complete mental freedom in religion.” (This quote is from Earl Morse Wilbur, the early 20th century scholar who is credited with coining freedom, reason, and tolerance as a framework for Unitarian history.)
When we put together the pieces, uncover the horrors that have been papered over, and review the whole history of Unitarianism and Universalism in America, we come to understand that the destructive path of settler-colonialism is tangled into the roots of our faith. Knowing that, we can go back and re-evaluate what our central values really mean to us, and try to imagine how to actually live them in a way that Unitarians and Universalists of the past may have missed.
For many of us, particularly those of us who are white, reconciling the whole story of the United States versus the version of history we were taught is a spiritual and emotional challenge, but one that I believe we are up to. It is a reckoning that I believe we must engage with if we are to be authentic in our faith. When we come to terms with the understanding that this country has not upheld the values we said it did, we may wonder how to move forward. What do we do when the country whose values we hold dear has not yet existed? How do we become the people we want to become when we realize the foundations we build on are not what they were proclaimed to be? Communities that have always been in the margins have wisdom here, if we are willing to listen and to center their experience.
In her article for The 1619 Project for the New York Times, Nikole Hannah-Jones reflects on the American flag that her father flew in front of their home, and how she felt about that flag growing up as an African-American in a country brimming with racism. She writes:
Our corner lot, which had been redlined by the federal government, was along the river that divided the black side from the white side of our Iowa town. At the edge of our lawn, high on an aluminum pole, soared the flag, which my dad would replace as soon as it showed the slightest tatter …
My father knew exactly what he was doing when he raised that flag. He knew that our people’s contributions to building the richest and most powerful nation in the world were indelible, that the United States simply would not exist without us ….
Toward the end of the article, she reflects:
No one cherishes freedom more than those who have not had it. And to this day, black Americans, more than any other group, embrace the democratic ideals of a common good ….
The truth is that as much democracy as this nation has today, it has been borne on the backs of black resistance. Our founding fathers may not have actually believed in the ideals they espoused, but black people did … For generations, we have believed in this country with a faith it did not deserve. Black people have seen the worst of America, yet, somehow, we still believe in its best.
What I hear in Nikole Hannah-Jones’ article is affirmation that we do not need to be deluded in order to work toward the future of democracy. We can work toward the idea of the common good, a society that includes and cares for all, a democracy where the most vulnerable have a seat at the table of power. A nation of truth and justice and opportunity is not yet who we are; we can get closer than we are now.
On the other hand, Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz writes: Those who seek history with an upbeat ending, a history of redemption and reconciliation, may look around and observe that such a conclusion is not visible, not even in utopian dreams of a better society.
We might not get to a perfect story arc with a satisfying resolution. If what we’re seeking is redemption for the atrocities of the founders of the United States, that may not happen. If we stop focusing on the reputation or the feelings of people who have historically had power, and focus instead on being authentic and justice-oriented, we may begin to open up space for something better than what has come before.
Life and history are never as neat and tidy as they are in the movies. We don’t always see the hero prevail. Sometimes we don’t even have a hero. Yet sometimes there are deeper truths, even if the story did not happen exactly that way. In Captain Marvel, it caused a crisis of faith and identity for the main character to learn hidden origin stories, yet bringing together the multiple truths led to finding new strengths. Studying actual history that is outside the approved narrative can change lives and societies. It won’t be comfortable for some, it won’t be easy for anyone. Moving into a future of justice and authenticity will require courage and commitment. May we awaken to the possibilities of truth.
So be it. Blessed be. Amen.
