Week one of black raspberries is coming to a close! Five weeks to go if we’re lucky! The elderflowers are starting to shed, and the gooseberries are slowly but surely ripening for us to look forward to!
Black raspberries are an excellent source of vitamin C and have more antioxidants than blueberries! There’s even been some indication of them reducing the risk of colon cancer.
The raspberry leaf is also a diverse and useful part! Magically they are also useful to represent things such as healing and protection, and medicinally they can be used in teas to assist in the treatment of things such as cardiovascular disorders, intestinal distress, or uterine/menstrual discomfort and irregularities!
From a magical perspective black raspberries (like standard raspberries) are useful for spells focusing on healing, protection, wealth, and prosperity. I wouldn’t use these as a key feature in anything romantic (as I might with red raspberries), but when it comes to health related witchcraft I would absolutely choose these over their red cousins! Taking their strong dark hue into account these berries can also serve as a yummy energetically neutralizing agent in any spell structure. I also find they make excellent offerings for any land based spirit or deity! Additionally, if you work with a sovereignty deity and live somewhere where these are native I highly recommend trying them out as an offering!
Things black raspberries can be used for: syrups, ice cream, cookies, cake, cake or pie filling, juices, jams, and so much more! Keep in mind these have a much higher seed to flesh ratio, so they will leave a lot of seeds in anything they’re left whole in!
Something to consider when enjoying any variety of raspberry is the concept of patience. Of long term development and growth. A first year raspberry cane produces no flowers or fruit, it simply exists to grow as tall as it can and help absorb nutrients to strengthen its roots and structure so that it can produce fruit in the following year. That tasty little berry took a long time getting itself ready so it could develop just right, and that’s something we can take into account when serving, cooking, or otherwise utilizing these happy lil friends in any form of craft.

Darius fell to his knees, his head spinning with a new wave of mind-numbing dizziness. He'd cleared out the local Hive nests and ravaged the outposts held by House of Dusk. But he was still hungry, still straining against the worm gnawing inside him.
'You starve us,' the worm hissed, its voice filled with displeasure in his mind. 'All the richness of light standing before us and you let us starve.'
"We're... not starving," he growled, using his sword to prop himself up. "We've already defeated all rival Hive and Fallen here. Isn't that enough for now?" He let out a gasp as another wave of deepening brain fog washed over him, clouding his thoughts like beer for a drunkard. "Wh-why are you doing this?"
'You are my Keeper,' the worm whispered back. 'I give you knowledge, wisdom, strength, and you grant me victories. Be victorious and you shall receive.'
"I've been victorious!" Darius snarled, gripping his broadsword's handle. "All that death, all this fighting, the defeating of my enemies, is that not enough!?"
'Small victories them all,' the worm replied, writhing slowly inside the knight's chest. 'Weight of victory can only be measured by weight of risk, and risk has been small. You know enemy you seek. One untouched by paltry skirmishes. But not yet strong enough to face Her. Seek greater, open claws for her neck or you will perish reaching for nothing.'
Darius hung his head. "But... there are no greater opponents for me to fight. This is all there is here."
'Then find greater,' the worm replied, 'or be consumed in its place. As weak fallen say, 'The Light provides.''
Taking a deep breath, the dark-clad knight pushed himself to his feet. He knew the Light the worm spoke of, knew what Light it wanted him to consume. But if it wanted him to use what the Light provided, then he had some ideas that might get him some greater challenges than Earth was providing. If he could last long enough to get to them, anyway.

The Regencies of the Princes of the Woodland Realm
Tumblr media
Original Map credit to The Encyclopedia of Arda. Edits by @sotwk.
King Thranduil Establishes the Rule of Princes
Thranduil's ascension faced opposition by a handful of powerful Sinda nobles (Oropher's councilors), who schemed to usurp the throne. They sought to turn the Silvans against Thranduil by disparaging his wife, Maereth, as a daughter of Noldor kinslayers. Fortunately, the people's love for Thranduil prevailed, and they embraced Princess Maereth as their Queen. She was eventually crowned almost a century after her husband took the throne.
Some years after the birth of their fifth and last son Legolas, Thranduil passed a royal decree called the "Thain-na-Conin" or "Rule of Princes", which modified the kingdom's feudal system of governance.
This law bestowed governing power on each one of Thranduil's children, granting them lordship over key provinces in the realm. Upon reaching the age of 250, the princes assumed responsibility for the protection and welfare of the citizens dwelling within their assigned lands or "regencies", while still answering to the sovereign authority of their father and King.
This was done not to increase the royal family's power, but to protect the common folk from negligence or abuses of their ruling lords. As the population grew rapidly and hundreds of new communities sprouted all over the vast Greenwood, Thranduil wanted to ensure that all Silvans received the same amount of care and attention from the Crown, no matter how remote their location.
Tumblr media
Political Timeline of the Woodland Realm:
SECOND AGE
SA 2054 - King Oropher moves his household out of Amon Lanc and migrates northward, setting up a new domain and capital in the western glens of Emyn Duir.
SA 2022 - Prince Thranduil commences the construction of a new palace separate from his father's, which he intends to make the home of his family. (Despite Maereth rejecting his marriage proposal.) This causes great strife between him and his father, because Thranduil declares he will not pursue anyone else but Maereth for his wife.
SA 2107 - Thranduil's palace is completed and he begins to assemble his household. The palace is named Bar Lasgalen, and is the grandest structure to ever be raised in Greenwood's history.
SA 2110 - Maereth visits Bar Lasgalen for the first time. Thranduil proposes again, but once more she turns him down.
SA 3142 - Thranduil and Oropher reconcile. Oropher finally grants his blessing for Thranduil to marry Maereth.
SA 3262 - Thranduil and Maereth are betrothed at the celebration of the Mereth Nuin Giliath in Greenwood.
SA 3265 -  Thranduil weds Maereth and she comes to live at Bar Lasgalen.
SA 3430 - Crown Prince Mirion is born. After himself being persuaded by Maereth, Thranduil convinces his father to join The Last Alliance of Elves and Men.
SA 3434 - Oropher is slain at the Siege of Barad-dûr.
SA 3441 - The war ends. Thranduil’s reign as Woodland King begins, and Bar Lasgalen becomes the realm's new capital.
Tumblr media
THIRD AGE
TA 37 - Turhir is born.
TA 88 - Maereth is crowned Queen of the Woodland Realm.
TA 89 - Arvellas is born.
TA 221 - Gelir is born.
TA 242 - Legolas is born.
TA 250 - Thranduil passes the "Rule of Princes".
TA 252 - Mirion assumes his regency over Bar Himlaeg (his late grandfather's domicile) and the communities of Emyn Duir.
TA 278 - Mirion marries Itarildë. The Crown Prince's controversial marriage to another "outsider" instead of a Silvan stirs up discontent among Thranduil's political opponents once more.
TA 287 - Turhir assumes his regency over the newly established city of Thangail.
TA 307 - Lord Councilor Silevion is exposed as the leader of a coup attempt against the royal family. He is deposed and stripped of his titles, and exiled from the Woodland Realm.
TA 339 - Arvellas assumes his regency over Cemamath, taking over Silevion's lands.
TA 471 - Gelir assumes his regency over Dant-en-Aras.
TA 492 - Legolas assumes his regency over Galadal.
Tumblr media
The Regencies of the Thranduilions
King Oropher's departure from Amon Lanc initiated the gradual migration of the Silvan Elves from the southern parts of Greenwood to the northern half of the great forest. By the start of Thranduil's rule, more than half of the realm's population resided above the Old Forest Road. However, the southern parts of the realm experienced a period of reinvigoration in the early Third Age due to the successful regencies of Prince Gelir and Prince Legolas.
The Woodland Realm enjoyed its most prosperous years between TA 500-1000, with the Thranduilions all working to further their parents' vision for a strong, united kingdom. The five regencies of the princes are:
BAR HIMLAEG, ruled by Crown Prince Mirion. A center for healing (esp. herbal medicine), the best source of Elvish medicine east of the Misty Mountains.
THANGAIL, ruled by Prince Turhir. Main base and training facility of the realm's military forces.
CEMAMATH, ruled by Prince Arvellas. Center of trade and commerce with the Dwarves and Men in the east.
DANT-EN-ARAS, ruled by Prince Gelir. Outpost and headquarters of the realm's best hunters and scouts.
GALADAL, ruled by Prince Legolas. Home of the largest concentration of farmers, who worked the fertile plains and maintained herds in the lands east of the forest borders. (Note: the Bight shown on the map did not exist until TA 1200, after Thranduil's people already left the southern forests.)
Unfortunately, in TA 1050, the Necromancer (Sauron) captured Amon Lanc, and began to poison the southern woods, with toxins and monsters that caused deaths at an alarming rate. Despite Thranduil and his family's valiant efforts to combat the Darkness, it continued to spread northward over the course of several centuries. Finally, the Elvenking made the difficult decision to prioritize the safety of his people and abandon the lands south of the Emyn Duir. He led his people north-east and reestablished their smaller kingdom in the underground halls.
The strength and prosperity of the Woodland Realm was one of the reasons Sauron chose it as a target for his corruptive influence. He both feared and envied the power of Thranduil and his family and wanted to destroy it, if not deceive or force it into his service.
Up until their last breaths (literally, for some of them), the Princes continued to fight for the defense of their beloved homeland until Dol Guldur was finally cast down at the end of the War of the Ring.

Legends and myths about trees
Celtic beliefs in trees (16)
D for Duir (Royal Oak) - June 10th - July 17th
“June Tree - 7th month of the Celtic Tree Calendar (Ref)”
metal: gold; Gemstone: diamond; Gender: male; Patrons: Dagda, Esus, Taranis, Artemis, Zeus, Jupiter, Thor; Symbols: strength + patience, generosity + protection, justice + nobility, honesty + courage
The oak was the most revered tree of the Celts, with a tall, round, stout trunk that is thick and round, spreading out like a crown. They grew into huge, imposing trees and lived long lives, so they became objects of worship for the Celts, who wished to live forever.
Another reason for their worship was their high level of usefulness. It was used for housing and furniture. The round table around which the knights of King Arthur's Round Table were surrounded was made of one solid piece of oak wood. Merlin the Wizard used magic in the oak forests and his magic wand was made from the finest oak branch. The ancients also believed that with the help of acorns, they could come into contact with the gods who ruled the natural world.
The bark was used for tanning, dyes and medicinal purposes and had a wide range of uses. Oak wood was also used for coffins to hold the remains of the dead and was associated with the afterlife. Oak acorns were a favourite food of pigs in ancient times and helped in the mass rearing of pigs. Oak trees, as well as the mistletoe that inhabits them, were a factor in oak worship. Because it was believed to have fertility and reproductive benefits, a ceremony was held on the sixth day of every month in the lunar calendar to reap the mistletoe by the druids (Ref2).
The oak woodland was revered as a sanctuary by the Celts and was called Nemeton. Druidic rituals were held under the oak trees of this Nemeton. There is evidence of the presence of many Nemetons in continental Gallia (the ancient name for the ancient Celtic settlements).
The oak tree, imbued with energy, power and vitality, represents divinity in nature as a gateway to the inner world, a passage to the Kingdom of God, and communicates its divine will to us in the company of the gods.

木にまつわる伝説・神話
ケルト人の樹木の信仰 (16)
D for Duir (Royal Oak) - 6

You talked in an earlier post* about economists' attitudes about mercantilism. Where do the physiocrats fit into this? What were they trying to do, what do current economists think of them, and how accurate is their assessment?
First of all, thank you for including the link! It really helps.
Tumblr media
Ok, so let's talk about the physiocrats. This was a pre-Smithian school of economists from France in the 18th century, and they are somewhat complicated to assess because their ideas are a strange mix of surprisingly accurate and completely batshit:
unlike the mercantilists, who they really didn't get along with, the physiocrats thought that growth and especially the circulation of wealth (as opposed to achieving a positive balance of trade and deepening capital pools as the means of driving development) was the most important goal of economic policy.
unlike the mercantilists and the classical economists, the physiocrats believed in the labor theory of value...but only for agricultural labor. The reason they called themselves "physiocrats" is that they believed all wealth came from nature, and that all industrial and commercial and other forms of labor were "unproductive appendages" that existed parasitically off of agricultural labor. This is particularly insane, given that they were writing on the very eve of the Industrial Revolution but well after the Commercial Revolution, so they were well aware that European countries had been making increasingly large amounts of money from stuff that wasn't agriculture. This, they felt, was cheating.
in terms of policy prescriptions, the physiocrats' main agenda items were free trade in grain - they firmly believed that any form of government intervention (say, during a famine to prevent starvation and bread riots) was inherently counterproductive and an unwarranted inference in the natural right of producers to maximize profits, which would eventually lead to higher production and lower prices - and a flat tax on property.
This school of thought was initially quite influential duiring the early stages of the French Revolution, but broke down almost immediately when there was a bad harvest and food prices shot up through the roof, because when large numbers of starving people who have just gone through a revolution and now have weapons and believe they have a right to use them to defend their lives and their freedom see the rational self-interest of grain merchants jacking up the price of their daily staple by 400%, they respond by killing them and putting their heads on pikes and taking the food by force. In that scenario, any government is going to react through intervention if only out of their own rational self-interest. Hell even the ancien régime knew enough to do that, and now the government is run by a bunch of Jacobins.
I would describe their reputation among contemporary economists as one of outwardly-polite condescension of the "well, bless your heart" school of southern gentility. They did hit on some ideas that later economists would run with, but at the end of the day they aren't Big Daddy Adam Smith so they are a mere footnote. But then again, contemporary economists are surprisingly ignorant about the history of economic thought, so it's to be expected.

Behold the fairy mound before your eyes;
It is plain for you to see, it is a king’s dwelling,
It was built by the harsh Dagda:
It was a shelter, it was a keep renowned for strength.
Although the name is translated as ‘the harsh Dagda’ here (which is a perfectly valid interpretation), the range of other meanings that are suggested by dúr could be interpreted as equating dúr (or duir, as it’s sometimes spelled) with dair (also sometimes spelled duir), because dúr can be given to mean ‘hard, rigid, solid,’ but also ‘firm, resolute, hardy,’ which offers a perfect complement to the hardy qualities of the oak. In the context of the Dagda having built the brug itself (using construction materials like oak), where the strength of its fortifications are emphasised, a translation of ‘the steadfast Dagda’ would perhaps be more apt, or perhaps even ‘the oaken Dagda.’

//Catch me thinking about my boy Darius and how he was so bent and determined on finding a way to kill Xivu Arath that he actually got the attention of a hive wizard, Ir Al'harath, who saw this little human juggernaut going in and wiping out things he shouldn't have been capable of, and been like "Hmmm I think I like you." before deciding to strategically set up rival broods for him to go and clean out but doing so in such a way with her spies/infiltrators, that he's learning Hive and unknowingly enacting ceremonial rites (as set up by Ir'Alharath) as he's cleaning these dens out. The final rite being in her own den where she sets up the final trial as being one of determination and conviction - a black shard with the energy of who knows what (probably all the Hive he killed) and the question of "What is it that you desire? State it and take it."
//And, like the idiot he is, he takes it and thinking this thing is going to become a new weapon, triggers a ritual that bleeds him of all the life-force energy he took from the Hive he killed and focuses it on the ritual's goal: reshaping him into the weapon.
