Mermay 2023 - 4th Week and last three days
Day 22 - Zodiac
Well, with a prompt like this one, it was a little too easy to go with the Aquarius for Mermay. But... the thing is I have a certain attachement for this astrological sign in particular.
Day 23 - Tradition
And here is "Mahu", the dumbo octopus merfolk from day 21, once more ! I had vaguely alluded to it, but "Mahu" won't be their name, even if this is what I had planned initially. I'll explain why.
You've probably noticed that all of the merfolks I made for Out of the Abyss are strongly inspired by polynesian cultures, the most obvious ones being Hawaiian and Maori. And "Mahu" is in itself a concept of the Hawaiian culture : a third gender of which the name translates litteraly to "in the middle". Mahu people had an important role in Hawaiian society. They taught spiritual and social traditions, which included, among other things, teaching the hula.
And so, for me to have the idea of naming them "Mahu" to begin with, you've probably figured out that it's because this is what they are, traditionally speaking. But as I thought about it, I realised naming them by what they are would be like naming a cat, well, "Cat". It's a bit dumb.
Basically, I want to give them a new name. I'll certainly keep a two syllables name to at least keep things simple.
Hmm... In fact, maybe I could find them a name that has something to do with traditions ?
Day 24 - Zaddy
I made this character on the spot as I wasn't really inspired by the prompt. But I think I managed well with it nonetheless.
Day 25 - Food
No matter his form, Humphrey will always be a big glutton. (Even if, thankfully, he doesn't have the same voracity as when he used to be an actual whale.)
Day 26 - Jewel
"Shiny... For me... ?"
Day 27 - Halle Bailey
Ok, I'm not gonna speak on the matter of the Disney remakes as I believe everybody knows and that everybody roughly agrees about it.
No, here, the subject is Miss Bailey. I think no one can deny it, her voice is magnificent. And no matter the state of the movie, if she took pleasure in playing Ariel's role, then I am gald for her. And I also wish her a good continuation in her career.
Day 28 - Sailor
Alright, I might be cheating a bit with this prompt here. But the idea had been floating in my head for a while now and I finally had an excuse to put it on paper.
I don't know if I was the only one to have this idea, but I saw no one imagine the Captain Caviar ending up with a merman form as a result from being cursed by Black Pearl.
And yet, I saw many people draw him as a merman, so I'm surprised I haven't already seen this idea roam around...
Day 29 - Barbie
I loved the Barbie movies when I was a kid, especially the Fairytopia series. Here, I drew Elina, main character of this movie series, who takes on a mermaid form for a good part of the movie "Mermaidia".
Day 30 - Blue
I had mentionned this on day 21, but I'll have to reiterate it for this prompt. Leviathan is a blue whale merman.
It's in fact for this same reason he's the tallest amongst his peers : blue whales are the biggest mammals known in the world. Even Humphrey, a little humpback whale merman in comparison, is no match.
Well, perhaps that under his original form, Humphrey could have surpassed Leviathan.
Day 31 - Good night
I never would have guessed that I needed to see Dino-sour be a father figure to a half dinosaur baby cookie in my life.
Yes, the previous sentence makes no sense out of context.
I no longer play Ovenbreak ever since... well, ever since even before what happened with Yogurca (the less we talk about it, the better), but I'm still trying to follow the stories on YouTube. And honestly, I think that Pond Dino is the best thing to have happened to the "Rise of the Blue Dragon" update. I get how their design bothers some (it's rather overloaded, let's admit it), but... Just...
Baby... <3
Baby that sleeps like an otter. <3

What Lies Deep (Jelly Jamm AU)
(Made this for mermay, and I might make it a full AU!)
(Your prompt: Bello is a merperson who gets injured and washed up on the shore of a beach unconscious, and is found by Goomo.) Soooo, trigger warnings for injuries, and of course, slight platonic Goomello/Honey-Cinnamon-Tea. Also, the language Bello originally speaks in is mermish, but he learns English/Jammbonian along the way!
~~~~~~~
He didn’t think it was real.
The very few times that Goomo went to the beach, he found a couple of shells or coastal dodo species, but he didn’t expect to find someone washed up on the shore, much less a kid his age.
The young boy had a complexion of red with matching hair that smelled like sea salt, a missing tooth on one side, and odd glowing marks across his body. There was one thing that bugged him, however: he didn’t have any legs, just a long tail with a heart-shaped fin at the end, and there were more fins across his body.
He didn’t expect to find the odd creature, per se, for it was actually Rita, who he was taking on a trip there, who found the strange boy on the beach. They immediately brought it back to the castle and informed the Queen about the boy with a tail, and she told the other kids to help while Goomo kept the boy at home with him. Ongo patched up his injuries, and Mina was building an enclosure for the boy from the water.
Rita usually came over to check on him and his damp friend, which she called “Ruby” because of his ruby red scales. Mina usually came over to study the odd creature while it was unconscious, and found out that it was scarred and wounded. Ongo… well, he knew something about it that could help, but none of the other kids could understand what he tried to say.
Now was an eventful day; the water boy was finally waking up! What do I say, what do I say?! “Hi, I thought you were dead!” No, no, no, he’ll think I’m trying to kill him! Maybe, “Welcome to the neighborhood”? He probably doesn’t know what that is! I know! I’ll ask if he’s okay! What can go wrong? The other boy’s eyes slowly opened up, a similar ruby red to his scales, and fins flaying outward as if he was trying to stretch.
“Excuse me, are you…” but before he could finish the sentence, he was lost in its gaze, stumbling over each syllable in awe. The creature was curious, and its markings lit up. The markings included, but weren’t limited to, a stripe across the chest patterned with gold scales in a lightning bolt shape, rings and stripes around his arms in a silvery white and a deep blue, and scales of the different colors dotting his tail and making odd little patterns.
It stared in confusion before trying to get closer, only to be stopped by the walls of his tank. “Y-you… you’re beautiful…” After hearing this, the water-dwelling boy pouted. “I-I-I’m so sorry! I just… never saw anything like you, a-and-“ it seemed to laugh a little, before answering in a language unknown to him. All he could hear was “Dal em setanim…”
“So… I found you on the beach, and you were unconscious, so I thought I’d keep you here, is that okay?” He said nothing, but his scales did light up. The smile on the odd water-dwelling boy’s face was enough of an answer for Goomo. “Great! So, do you have a name? I, uh, don’t want to call you ‘it’ all the time…” “…Name?” “Y-Yeah, what do you call yourself? For instance, my name is Goomo! And… you are?”
“B-Bello.”
~~~~~~~
Bello was adjusting nicely to his tank, but he got bored easily. Mina brought some books for him to read- or rather, for him to have Goomo read them- and tried teaching them how to speak each other’s language.
Rita began to accept that the odd fishy boy was part of the neighborhood now, and even helped him adjust, even if she still called him “Ruby” sometimes. Ongo sort of spoke to Bello too, even understanding what he said. But Goomo still felt like a stranger to the ocean dweller.
Bello has learned how to speak Jammbonian as well, but he could only parrot little phrases and words here and there. Whether he knew what they meant or not was another story altogether. Even so, they had little talks in order to understand each other.
Today, it was Mina’s turn to visit them, and the boys were genuinely interested in hearing a story today! “What’s the book about today?” “What? What?” “This,” she opened the book to a page with a  picture of a young woman with a long coat and a sword, “is the journal of Lady Kazamira.” She read them tales of seafaring adventures and daring sword fights, but then one story peaked Bello’s interest.
It was about something that Kazamira called “merpeople,” and Bello immediately spoke up after hearing some depictions. “Ffuegane! Dat… is mee!” Mina and Goomo looked up at him as he said this. “Wh-what did he say?” Mina thought for a moment, and then she began to realize and speak up, increasingly energetic. “Ffuegane is how they say merpeople in second order Mermish! Of course! His tail, a-and his need for constant hydration or contact with water, the markings… your roommate is a young merperson!”
Goomo couldn’t believe it. They were real. Kazamira’s stories were based on something true. “Y-You’re a-“ Bello emitted a quick grunt before realizing that the others couldn’t understand, and tried speaking their language again. “…eeas. I am!” “That’s so cool! C’mon! Let’s hear more stories about merpeople!”
“If you like this book so much, you can keep it. There’s even a translator in there!”
~~~~~~~
The few days that went by, Goomo learned how to speak Mermish and how to care for and maintain his merman roommate. Bello learned a little, too- he learned some of his own kind’s history! Meanwhile, the enclosure was almost complete! Maybe I should enjoy a little fly-by and check on the progress?
Carefully placing a blanket over Bello’s tank, he started up the flight function and began to plink away on the built-in piano keys. “Looks great so far…” The tune he played was nothing too fancy, just a little song that flowed like water and could easily be hummed to… but then… he heard something.
Was that… singing?
Before he turned around, he engaged autopilot and looked for the source. It was Bello singing! Goomo could NOT believe it. “Y-You’re a great singer!” “Krrr?” The young merman hid under the blanket yet again. “No, no, no! It’s okay! You’re really good at singing, too!” “…thank you.” It was obvious that Bello was not used to having others hear him sing.
“You know…” Goomo walked up to the tank. “I’m a little shy about my piano skills… what do you say? It can be our little secret!” “See-crit?” Oh, right… he doesn’t understand certain words… “I won’t tell anyone about your singing, and you don’t tell anyone about my ability to play piano, okay?” “…Truth.” What was the young merman saying? Tell the truth? But he was so scared!
“I-I can’t do that! What if they laugh at me?!” Bello didn’t change his response at all, restating “truth” in a much more firm tone. “…You’re right. But what if-“ “They laugh… their problem!” After hearing that, he felt a little better. As he turned off autopilot, he safely landed his home and began to head for the door- “Mrrrrrr!”
Bello seemed to be making lots of sounds, as if he wanted him to stay for a little longer. The words that he were focused on were “Oowii” and “Hhu-hng,” meaning that he wanted his attention, and something about the heart… “What is it? What are you trying to say?” “…Why I was… hurt…”
He explained to Goomo that in the beginning, he was hunting for a bit, and he was considered the oddball of his own little schooling, but he ran- er, swam- away, trying to find a place of his own where he was the leader. Unfortunately, he couldn’t exactly stay on task, and he got distracted by the surface easily.
As a result, hunters easily spotted and captured him aboard their ship. He managed to escape, but not without scars from the sharp sticks they held and bruises from his attempts to swim after his tail became weak from the lack of water. “I’m sorry you had to go through that… I promise, with all my heart, that you will never have to go through that again as long as I am here!”
Bello seemed to smile after hearing that. “So, what are we waiting for? Let’s go check on your new home!” “New home!” Goomo picked up Bello’s tank of water and placed it on top of a rolling cart that he was provided, dragging it over to the exact area where Mina said the tank was.
Gently eyeing the handiwork, it was perfect. There was an area for everyone to walk in and see the charming little merman swim around, and steps to walk up and interact with him. The actual tank part had a water filter to keep it fresh and a bed of sand with aquatic plants and small prey creatures to simulate Bello’s hunting and foraging instincts, and the best part: he could see all his new friends, including his best friend.
“It’s still a work in progress,” Mina added, “but I assure you, soon enough, it’s going be perfect!” “What do you mean? It’s already perfect! And Bello really seems to like it, too!” “But there needs to be waterways so he can travel Jammbo and visit you! It-“ Bello immediately tried climbing into the special containment zone for him, and immediately loved it. “…alright, I guess we could do the waterways together for now.” “Where should we start?”
Bello immediately traced a line from his containment to Goomo’s house.
“I think Bello has a good idea.”
Mermay -  Azul & Tweels Part 2
TW: Mentions of the Tweels eating a human.
The initial planning stages took no time - after all, Azul was particularly speedy when mind games came into play. Create a potion, find a suitable human mate, give human the potion and hope for a successful transformation without too much mindbreak.
The last part was the hardest and after a few failed attempts (the first potion succeeded but Floyd got too excited and bit their new mate too hard on the neck) the tweels were impatient with Azul and instead the Octomer giving specific criteria for another attempt, both eels pushed him out to search for their final attempt.
“Oya, take as long as you need - we’ll keep everything safe~” Jade sang to Azul, smiling with lovely teeth as Floyd ripped flesh apart and started eating the failed experimental mate behind his brother. “I’ll even tidy up and everything will be just as you left it after our lunch~”
Annoying, but it couldn’t be helped, Azul thought as he slowly made his way towards human civilization. Humans were fragile here and magic was a capricious mistress. As fortune would have it their little hideout was close enough to your city and it was even easier for Azul to glamor himself under a pier and literally materialize on the beach in his formal attire and walking aide.
After all, this was a city and businessman were abundant on the streets. Blending in wasn’t a problem but finding a suitable human for their heat was. While he had been on land before he greatly preferred his small, cozy home and octopot over the sprawling metropolis and loud, smelly vehicles that travelled everywhere.
Finding himself looking up at a familiar and famous coffee shop, our glamoured merman made his way in - even though he despised many human-things, caffeine was definitely more enjoyable on land than sea. The smell, taste, and general atmosphere that this particular store offered had a similarity that his own home had back underwater that he couldn't resist.
*****
Summer was approaching and now that it wasn’t raining all the time, you could enjoy the outside with ease - especially at your favorite café. If you got there early enough, they even had a large garage-door like window they would open so fresh air could make it’s way in. Not to mention the baristas were top-notch and the café stocked their pastries from another famous bakery.
So when you finally sit down in the early morning on the weekend with your favorite hot drink and sugary breakfast and get ready to focus on writing a paper, it takes you by surprise when a businessman your age approaches your table by the window.
“Excuse me, but may I borrow this chair if no ones using it? It seems today is exceptionally busy.” The silken voice literally forced your attention to snap the crisp-looking man in front of you - easy on the eyes and with a beautiful smile to match, you almost didn’t notice the cane.  Sympathy floods your heart and forces your guard down.
Glancing around for his spot and seeing that every table was taken, you notice how busy the place is. With a rather large table under your possession and enchanted by this newcomer, you gesture in front of you. Time to be social with someone handsome and procrastinate your work.
“You’re welcome to take the chair but there’s plenty of room here to sit. Are you a local? I haven’t seen you around before! ” You ask a bit too eagerly, pretending to type after your inquiry but really just “AJKHFKHS”-ing on the keyboard to look composed and professional.
Azul stops for a split second at your question, his expression unreadable but taking off his hat and placing it on the table as he sat down.
“Ahh~ Yes I am but I don’t get out much. The weather is just too nice recently to stay holed up and I’ve heard such wonderful things about this place. Do you have any recommendations?” The gentleman asks, folding his hands neatly in front of him as if he would rather not take up too much space. Respectable and easy on the eyes - your family would be ecstatic at this exchange.
“Well you’ve come to a great place! Their lattes are wonderful and they have numerous milk substitutions, plus they get their pastries from this family run business every morning so you know everything is fresh ~“ you continue to gush about your favorite hangout spot and recommend numerous items. He listens to you breathlessly, his gorgeous blue eyes sparkling cryptically as you open up to him.
It was a good thing he was forced him to pick out their mate on his own - Floyd and Jade seemed to rush to pick any human before they were vetted by Azul.
Perhaps that was why the potions weren’t taking? Nevertheless Azul had decided to use this café as his headquarters while on land - for vetting purposes, he told himself as he sipped on one of the delicious drinks you recommended.
He was meticulous in his research and while the two eel mermen would berate him later for taking his time in picking their (hopefully last ) mate, Azul believes it’s worth the time to get it right and you seem like a great candidate.
Leviathantale MerMay 2021 - Day 8: Depths
Negotiations between Leviathans start out petty before it gets a little...heated.
Warning(s): Suggestive Content, Ink knowing no boundaries
Established Afterdeath and BEI, hints of past(?) DestructiveDeath, Pre-Afterdeath+BEI poly…maybe
“Stinky.”
“Stop insulting my datemate!”
“Stinky squid.”
“S-S-S-Stop it!”
This was supposed to be a mature negotiation between Leviathans to loosen up territory lines for the sake of the baby selkie currently taking their nap. Unfortunately, the “mature” part of this entire interaction is noticeably absent. Geno and Blue, who were overseeing this entire interaction from a distance, share matching looks of exasperation and sigh.
“Immature idiots.”
“Agreed.”
Despite being so deep in the ocean’s depths, the two mortals remain unaffected by the lack of air and untouched by the pressure thanks to the magic of their lovers. There is no issue in Geno and Blue’s ability to see in the depths since the lights that their respective lovers give off in their Leviathan forms does well enough in keeping away the darkness.
Their titainesque forms would have made a majestic sight but…
“Grrraghh! I-I-I’ll K-KILL YOU, REAPER!!”
“Hah! As if your noodle body can pin me long enough to do that!”
…well, squabbling like three-year-olds always look ridiculous no matter the appearance. The unamused selkies watch as the fight starts to escalate into a physical one with Error trying to wrap himself around Reaper to hold him in place while he tries to strangle the other Leviathan.
“I’m sorry about my mate,” Geno apologizes to Blue. “Reaper is still upset about Blank’s first mer transformation. Still, it’s no excuse for his behavior.” He shakes his head. “By the way things are going, we’re going to have to go back to Antarctica with Blank to prevent any more fights.”
“Okay, okay, no more fighting!” Ink finally intervenes after overhearing Geno’s comment. He tangles up his fellow Leviathans with his tentacles and breaks them apart. “Especially you, Reaper. I don’t mind that you think I’m stinky, but you’re making Ruru upset and that’s not good.” He tilts his head and blinks innocently. “Just because Blank thinks we’re more interesting than you doesn’t mean you have to be so salty!”
“Ink,” Blue gasps in the background, scandalized at his datemate’s words.
Reaper bares his teeth at the giant squid. “Shut up, you slippery bastaaaaaaah. Ah.” Ink blinks in surprise at the reaction. He’d only given the other Leviathan a friendly, warning squeeze. It takes a moment for him to realize that he’d accidentally wrapped Reaper up in a pattern reserved for more fun and private activities. Old habits die hard.
Instead of being embarrassed about his mistake, Ink’s smile shifts into a knowing smirk, teasing his fellow Leviathan. Reaper flushes with humiliation and looks away.
“Whoops, I slipped. Sorry!” Ink’s apology sound completely insincere even to himself. Not that it matters. Ink’s interest is piqued and that isn’t always a good thing for others when he gets like this. He looks down and his smirk grows wider. “Well, well, well, what do we have here? Seems like the Harbinger of Death is sensitive.”
“Oh,” Blue flushes when Ink moves a tentacle aside. “That’s…impressive.” Geno, you lucky selkie, was unsaid but heavily implied.
Error is in a worse state. He’s a flustered mess, unable to cover his face with his arms tangled up in Ink’s tentacles.
“You’re actually really pretty, Reaper,” Ink says with a giggle. “You know, I used to be so jealous of your past relationship with Ruru, but I’m beginning to see why he was so taken with you.”
Reaper and Error immediately start spluttering at Ink’s words.
“That’s not–!”
“I-I-I-INK!”
“Those two have a history,” Ink stage whispers to the witnessing selkies with a wink. “You should’ve seen them. They had a sexual tension so thick that you’d think it’s fatty tuna.”
“SHUT UP, INK!” Reaper and Error cry out in unison.
Ink laughs at their reactions. “It’s not like I mind about you two now, you sillies! It’s a good thing! Don’t you see? We can make this work! You can have two – maybe three! – more datemates and Blank can stay as long as they’d like! We don’t need to worry over the boundary lines!” He reaches out with both hands and cups Reaper’s cheeks with a tenderness that contrasts sharply with his careless air. “What do you say? Doesn’t that sound great?”
“I…”
“Stop terrorizing my mate with seduction,” Geno appears right in front of Ink’s face, making all Leviathans jerk back. He doesn’t look the slightest bit amused by the entire thing. “If you’re trying to steal my mate away from me in order to make Blank stay, then it’s a terrible idea.” Ink flinches at the severity in Geno’s eyelights. His grip on Reaper immediately falls away, freeing the dazed Orca. Geno settles on Reaper’s shoulder, snapping him back to reality. “Negotiations are going nowhere. We’re done here for tonight. Let’s go back up, Reaper.”
“Yes, darling.”
Geno and Reaper start to leave when they’re stopped by a single tentacle. Ink reels them back in. “What do you mean stealing your mate because of Blank?” Ink asks. Behind him, Error and Blue hiss at him to shut up. “I’d steal him even without Blank in the picture! I’d steal you too! I think you’re both pretty! Be our datemates please!”
It’s Geno turn to flush.
“We’re!! Done!! For tonight!!” he shouts as he pushes Reaper to leave faster.
(“Hmm, maybe he didn’t accept because I didn’t come with courting gifts?” “Shut up, Squid.”)
Hello! If your still doing head cannons (or even oneshots) could I please request the Arcana boys with a Merperson head cannon? I know it’s past mermay
Of course, we always have time for merpeople :)
warnings: none!
-Asra Alnazar-
Considering how good he is with magic, specifically water magic, it makes sense for him to one day stumble upon you, a sweet young merperson
The two of you met when you were quite young and liked to practice magic together
As the two of you grew older and more experienced, you were able to journey with each other more
Asra mastered water breathing spells that allowed him to join you in the water, and you loved taking him to old wreckages or beautiful coral reefs
Together, you two managed to give yourself temporary legs! Asra helped you learn to use them, and soon enough he was able to show you around the diverse cities and markets on land
He loves seeing how excited you get when you see something new and 9/10 he ends up buying it for you
One time you were in the middle of the market and the spell giving you legs just completely gave out, and Asra had to hurriedly hide you in the magic shop
He made the tub a bit bigger than it actually was so you had enough space to relax while you saved up strength to give yourselves legs again
Often times the two of you will hang out on the shore, Asra sprawled out in a low hanging tree branch and you draped across some rocks
Asra never gets tired of how mesmerizing you look in the crystal clear water, hair floating free in the water, eyes sparkling, and beautiful tail rippling in the small currents
He’ll sometimes use his water magic a bit to do cute little things like ruffle your hair
And Faust adores you!!! Because of your tail, she kinda considered you half snake, and she thinks that’s the coolest thing ever :)
-Julian Deovrak-
You met on one of his many voyages on the open seas, on one where he happened to get lost
You had been following the ship for fun, eavesdropping on Julians stories and songs
And because you’d developed a soft spot for him, you decided to help him out a bit
“Now where in the world are we…?” Julian muttered
“Just a bit East from the mainland,” you replied from the water.
“Oh, are we now?” Julian nodded, marking his map. “Makes sense. Don’t know how you figured it out so quickly, but—” He trailed off sharply as he looked at you again and realized oh shit that’s a merperson right there giving me directions
You just stared at one another for a few moments, his eyes wide while yours blinked back slow and calm
“Oh. Hello. You don’t seem to have any legs.”
“I’m a merperson.”
“Ah.”
You hung around his ship whenever he went out at sea and met with him at the port of whatever town he’s stopped at, giving him guidance as needed
And one thing led to another and the two of you are dating now!
The amount of trouble the two of you get into was really something, let me tell you
Between you taking Julian to shipwrecks or him taking you to all sorts of places on the surface, you always have your fair share of adventures
Being a doctor, he’ll quickly learn how to help you adjust to being on the surface with a variety of potions or balms
One of his favorite things to do is sit by the water, talking and watching you idly swim about, hair and tail gliding through the water with ease
When he’s drunk, he makes bad merperson puns/jokes and will sing drunken ballads about his merperson lover
-Lucio-
Long story short, you met because Lucio, went sailing during a storm and you had to drag his ass back to shore
When he regained consciousness, there was seaweed wrapped around his injuries, but he barely noticed that as he saw you staring at him from behind a rock
“Um. Hello. Why are you staring at me?”
“I just wanted to make sure you were alright. You took quite the spill.”
“I did, did I? Must’ve been pretty cool, right?”
“You almost died.”
“So it was really cool.”
He got up to get a closer look at you and was hella caught off guard by the fact that, instead of legs, you had a long, beautiful tail
You agreed to meet back up in the same place tomorrow because Lucio wanted to give you something in return for saving him, not wanting to be indebted to you
Then after that, the two of you kept making up excuses to see each other again before one of you finally admitted “okay, we’re friends, and I just like hanging out with you”
And obviously, the whole “friends” thing evolved into something more soon after
He loves your tail and never gets over how beautiful you look in the water
He always makes sure hunters don’t come anywhere near you
Lucio convinced you to come to Vesuvia with him, and though his plan was a bit backward and convoluted, you ended up in the rivers of Vesuvia
He managed to show you countless buildings and markets from the safety of a boat, where blankets covered your tail and the safety of water was nearby
The two of you often go out exploring and you have to repeatedly convince Lucio not to do dumb things
He brings you beautiful things from the surface, and though you don’t always understand how expensive they are, you like them
-Muriel-
You often swam in the forest rivers and had seen Muriel before, the tall man who was oddly polite, respectful of nature, and good with animals for a human
You were aware of him, but could never work up the nerve to say hello
So for months, you had a bit of strange relationship. You were both vaguely aware of the other’s presence and would sometimes leave gifts for the others, but never directly interacted
Of course, that could only last so long
One day you were just swimming along and BAM you’re caught in a hunter’s net, hanging just above the water and completely helpless
Lucky for you, it was by a place Muriel often got drinking water
He came by a few hours later and you managed a faint greeting
Confusion and awkward stammering followed in the resulting conversation, but Muriel managed to gently lower you into the water
He even promised to make sure that hunters didn’t put their nets in those parts of the river :) he was too shy to ask the hunters himself, he had to have Asra persuade them for him rip
So that’s how you met, and the rest is history
You go for walks in the forest often, Muriel walking along the shore and you following in the water. You talk about everything and anything, or sometimes just enjoy the silence together
If you need to leave the water, Muriel can carry you like it’s nothing
There was one winter when the river became too frozen for even you, so Muriel filled a tub with warm water and let you stay in the hut for awhile
He brings you animals or flowers that aren’t usually be the water so you can see them too
Loves seeing you glide through the water because it’s simply a very soothing sight
Very protective of you because you’re so kind and lovely he can’t imagine anyone wanting to hurt you
for mermay, 9 indruck nsfw?
Here you go! #9 was folklore, Indrid’s design is based on a blue-ring Octopus, and I borrowed from one of the Discord convos we had about mer Indrid recently.
Content note: there is implied transphobia/misgendering in the reason Duck ends up in the water.
Duck goes to the depths still protesting, hands and ankles bound in rope and dark water closing over his head.
No amount of insisting he was the man he said he was or appealing to logic was enough; a woman aboard, even when he isn’t a woman, is bad luck and must be gotten rid off. So here he is, drowning for the sake of superstition, folklore and nonsense the reason his lungs scream in protest, denied air.
Whoever said drowning was like falling asleep was a damn liar; he’s in agony, reduced to his most basic state of a creature that wants to stay alive and cursed with the knowledge that he won’t. He shuts his eyes, as if that might make it more dreamlike, and circles past him, he feels fingers on his cheek and then, and then....
Then he’s waking up, chest rising and falling with ease. No more than a nightmare, then, he’s still on the ship-
No, wait, his blanket is floating where he kicked it away. He’s alive, he’s in some sort of bedroom, and he’s fucking confused.
Voices float in under the door, a lilting one reaching him first, “...most stubborn set of legs I ever encountered. A kiss is supposed to be enough, yet while his body can survive in our realm, it insists on remaining like itself.”
“Indrid, his majesty is going to be unhappy when he finds out.”
“I am aware, Vincent. And if my brother finds a drowning man, he may rescue him or not as he sees fit. He does not get to dictate my conscious.”
“I mean, I think you did the right thing” A woman’s voice now, “but he’s still pretty angry at you for the whole giving me legs incident.”
“You wanted to see your beloved, and I am almost as fond of Aubrey as I am of you. A charm that allows you to go between worlds is hardly cause for such a fuss.”
“It was the no-voice thing that bothered him.”
A sigh, “Time and again I have reminded him that strong magic comes with a price. In your case it was easily paid, because Aubrey recognized you instantly and kissed you. As if I would send my own niece into a situation where she might be trapped.” The last sentence is muttered, like the speaker knows no one will listen.
“I know that. That’s why you're my favorite uncle.”
“I am your only uncle” the smile is audible, “and I am just glad the two of you will be married soon. Now if you will excuse me, my foresight tells me my guest is awake.”
A door opens and shuts, and a moment later the curtain of kelp at the end of the room parts. Duck’s never believed in mermaids (or mermen), but that’s what swims to him now, human face and torso giving way to eight silvery tentacles dotted with deep blue rings. They’re almost as striking as his face, his features sharp and alien, crowned with silver-white hair.
“Hello” The mer smiles with sharp teeth, “How are you feeling?”
“Uh, not as confused as I could be on account of what I heard, but still tryin to work out why the fuck you saved me at all.”
“Three reasons: for starters, I dislike having corpses floating around the kingdom. I also do not see the point in having the power of foresight if I cannot use it to prevent suffering when possible. And finally I…” The calm smile on his face falters a moment, “I saw the moments that lead to your being thrown into the waves. You were condemned for being something you are not. I, ah, I could not let such an injustice come to pass.” His mask remakes itself, “and so here you are, Duck Newton.”
“And the kiss?” Duck raises his eyebrow.
“Ah, yes. If a mer kisses a dying human, that human will become a mer themselves. Except in your case, you have-”
“-Stubborn legs?”
A light laugh, “And here I thought I would be the one interrupting you. Yes, exactly. I have no idea why. I’m simply glad the magic worked well enough to help you breathe. There is a, ah, an issue however. My visions show that in your current state, you will not be able to survive on land.”
“But you said somethin about a charm to your, uh, niece?”
“That worked because it simply had to take her from mermaid to human; you’re stuck between forms in a way that, were I to apply the same approach to you it would end badly. As in accidentally turn you into a fish badly, at least in most timelines.”
“Huh” Duck worries the inside of his cheek with his tongue, “so I’m stuck here.”
“Indeed. I’m sorry.” Indrid sits on the foot of the bed, tentacles moving this way and that to fidget with the blankets, the bedposts, and the stray shells on the floor, “This has never happened before, and I did not mean to trap you in this way, I only meant to save you, to give you freedom.”
“That’s more than a lot of folks’ve tried to give me lately.” Tentatively, he touches the tentacle tip nearest him. It weaves between his fingers, the pressure from the suckers on the underside oddly pleasant. He rubs his thumb over a blue spot, which draws Indrid’s attention. His face goes pink and he pulls the tentacle back.
“Apologies, they have a mind of their own at times.”
“Don’t bother me. I, uh, I was just tryin to show you I ain’t mad. Feel a little adrift, but that’s a damn sight better then bein’ dead.”
“Adrift--OH, oh I see, you are going to say you do not know what to do now. The answer is heal; even though you are alive, your body and mind suffered before I saved you. You need rest and care, and I promise you shall want for neither. You are my honored guest, Duck Newton. My home is yours. I, ah, I would offer to let you leave the instant you are feeling able, but as you heard there are some issues with you being seen in this state.”
“Used to layin low.” Duck sighs, flopping back on the bed (or trying to, as he floats down onto the mattress instead).
“I gathered. If I had things my way, you would not need to do such things here. Alas, until my brother gets eaten by a shark, we may be dealing with this arrangement for some time” he gestures to the room, bathed in blues and greens as light filters down from the surface and in through the windows. Two tentacles gather the blanket, spreading it back up Duck’s body and smoothing it down.
“Rest now, Duck Newton. In the morning I will have much to show you.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Duck wakes up clawing at the water above the bed, heart beating fast enough he fears it might eject itself up his throat.
The nightmares a fewer these last two days, but whenever they want to be done for good is fine by him.
He gathers seaweed green robe Indrid gave him and makes his way out of the bedroom and down the hall. Indrid gave him a bracelet of cowrie shells that’s enchanted to let him walk without floating away. He’s a strong swimmer, but without a tail to aid him he tires quickly against the force of the water.
The merman’s house is huge, an attempt by the king to keep him happy without giving him any useful power. Most rooms are cluttered with etchings and drawings or items salvaged from wrecks or the shoreline. There are spare beds, but after the night where Duck awoke in a panic and could not calm down, where Indrid found him the next morning exhausted and shaking, the mer offered to sleep in the same room with him. Duck pointed out that it was technically Indrid’s bedroom anyway and he could sleep there if he wanted to. The mer dragged a variety of comfy pillows into the corner and declared he would be quite happy there. More than once Duck’s woken up first to see him sprawled out on the cushions, always clinging one against his chest. Duck wonders what would happen if he offered to take it’s place. He suspects he could  do so without issue.
He’s no stranger to being admired, though the last time someone eyed him so approvingly he ran off to sea to avoid marrying them. Indrid’s red eyes contain the same desire but none of the entitlement. The merman’s been staring at him since that first day, though it’s only recently that he let’s Duck seem him doing so, after Duck caught his eye and stared right back.
Teasing Indrid is more fun than he expected, because while the mer usually gives as good as he gets, some days he blushes and wiggles his tentacle tips under Ducks attention. Indrid is obviously high status and, in Duck’s view, the most captivating mer in the kingdom; making him go pinker than a virgin at a striptease from a little flirting is gratifying.
His absolute favorite part of his new home, aside from Indrid, are the gardens at the center. Coral glistens and rainbows of fish flit across his path, sea flowers bloom and wave as he passes by. The best place to sit is in a massive clam shell with an excellent view of the grounds and the city beyond. It also happens to be Indrid’s preferred location to draw.
The mer takes one look at him and extends a tentacle, guiding Duck down to nestle close to him. When they’re with arms reach, one hand leaves his drawing to pet Duck’s thigh soothingly. He tilts his head, intending to study the sketch and ask about it, but ends up with his head on Indrid’s shoulder, slipping back into sleep.
“Oh dear.” Indrid murmurs, closing the book as a flurry of voices swim towards them.
“So, the rumors are true; you’ve brought a human into our domain.”
“Good morning to you as well, dear brother.”
The king crosses his arms, glaring at them, “if you cannot provide a decent reason for your having him here, I will make exile him myself. Right now.”
Indrid’s expression and voice remain calm, but one tentacle coils around Duck’s ankle and his hand clings to the loose trousers, “He, ah, he is, ah”
“I thought as much.” The king swims forward.
“Pet!” Indrid grins triumphantly, “he’s my pet. You keep saying you wish I would find a way to occupy my time and stay out of trouble, and here he is.” Indrid pulls Duck into his lap, patting his head with such exaggeration Duck has to stifle a laugh, “I have been so busy with him the last few weeks I’ve had little time for anything else. Isn’t that right, Vincent?”
Their friend nods, “Yes, your highness, the prince has found Du--, uh, the human most diverting.”
The king narrows his eyes, “Very well. The human may stay in that capacity.” With that, he swims from the gardens, trailed by his advisors.
“I gotta start wearing a leash now?” Duck teases, realizing too late that he’d do so in an instant as long as Indrid was holding the other end.
The blue of the rings deepens, “Not at all. Apologies for referring to you as my pet, but the timelines shifted so heavily in the direction of him casting you into the open sea that I panicked.”
“Aw, you lied to the kings face just for me. Must really like me.”
“I do! I, oh dear have I not made that clear?” Indrid gathers Duck’s hands between his own.
“You have, I was just teasin you. I don’t mind playin your spoiled pet to get one over on him, provided you keep spoilin me.”
Indrid’s grin returns, “I’m certain I can manage that.”
-----------------------------------------------------------------
“I hate it when he calls my bluffs.” Indrid glowers into the jeweled box just delivered to their doorstep. Right before Duck asks what’s wrong, the merman hands him a small piece of parchment.
Prince Indrid,
Included is a gift for your ‘pet,’ as you are apparently in need of it. It would be a shame for him to get lost, after all.
The note ends with the kings seal. Duck looks up as Indrid turns the box his way, revealing a collar studded with abalone shells and a leash woven from dark, sturdy seaweed. So many obscene images flood his mind it takes two tries before he can focus on Indrid’s words.
“...Thought I kept us clear of anyone who would bother to report us. I’m sure there’s a way around it, ruse aside you are my friend and equal and I will not ask you to humiliate yourself. Hmm, oh goodness, we will need to send word to Dani and Barclay that we cannot come to dinner to tonight, that’s not enough time to draw up a solution, though perhaps we can invite them here instead.” His tentacles trawl the ground as he paces the room.
“‘Drid?”
“Yes?” The mer stops, then his eyes widen, “you are serious?”
“Gotta let me offer first.” He replies with fond exasperation, “I fine with wearin it while we’re out. I know how you really feel about me and, uh, it, uh, makes me feel...safe?” It’s right on the border of a lie by omission, but he manages to get it out.
“I see” Indrid swims casually towards him, as if that will distract Duck from the pink creeping up his cheeks, “in that case, may I put this on you, pet?”
“Uh huh.” Duck tilts his chin up, shuts his eyes with a happy sigh as Indrid latches the collar in place. The mer stays chest to chest with him, testing to be certain the collar is comfortable.
“How is that?”
“Woof” Duck deadpans.
Indrid blinks, confused.
“It’s the noise a dog makes.”
Another blink.
“Y’know those things that are like sea lions but on four legs instead of flippers?”
“That’s what those are called. Fascinating.” Indrid loops the leash into place and Duck growls playfully. The mer pats his cheek, fingers lingering on his skin as he purrs, “good boy.”
-------------------------------------------------------
“Are you ready?” Indrid tips to vials of purple powder into a bowl, causing sweet smelling swirls of color to fill the room.
“Yeah. Been ready for years.” Duck stands opposite from him, drumming his fingers nervously on the rim of the bowl.
A week ago, Indrid asked in that blunt way of his if Duck wanted his human form to be different than it was. When he said yes, the mer immediately swam from the table and into the library to pull books from shelves.
“It will take a few days to prepare; I am careful in all my spells but, well...well I suppose when it is you I am inclined to take even more care than usual.”
It’s not the spell that’s making his nerves bubble up his chest; it’s the component of it he has to contribute. A secret, a precious one, because powerful magic will not give something for nothing.
“Whisper it into the foam.” Indrid gestures to the golden bubbles on the surface of the bowl.
Duck keeps it short and sweet. Then blinding light surrounds him, pure white spiked through with pink and blue, and he collapses to the ground, unable to do anything but hold himself as the spell courses through him. When the colors fade and the room returns to view, it’s all he can do to make his legs stand.
“How, ah, how do you feel?” Indrid taps his fingers together nervously, four of his tentacles following suite.
“Like I got trampled by a horse and came out a new man.”
“Oh. Good.” The fidgeting intensifies. Duck can only think of one reason for that.
“‘Drid? Did, uh, did the spell mean you learned the secret?”
“Yes.”
“Does it bother you? What I said, I mean.”
“No.”
A pulse of water, flourish of blue and silver, and Indrid’s lips find his. Arms and tentacles lift and hold him as they spin slowly across the room, the mer moaning when Duck drags his hands up his chest. He keeps kissing him as he speaks, mouth growing needier after every pause, “I, there were only a few timelines where you confessed your feelings for me and I, I wanted them so badly but I swore I would only act on your feelings if you used them in the spell, not simply because I saw futures where you might.” Tentacles slide under his shirt and up his pant-leg, “ohhhh, touching you in visions is nothing compared to feeling you for real.”
“Can feel me as much as you want, darlin. Got some things I wanna get my hands on too.” He tangles his fingers in Indrid’s hair, glides his mouth down to kiss his collarbone and tease a nipple with his tongue.
“Oh my sweet little human, the things I am going to do to yo-”
The doorbell times and Indrid nearly drops him.
“Damn it all, I forgot we were hosting game night.”
“Don’t worry ’Drid,” Duck pinches the base on one tentacle, “I ain’t goin anywhere, we can pick this up another time.”
----------------------------------------------------------
“I call that a success.” Indrid ushers Duck into the house. They’re returning from Aubrey and Dani’s engagement party (Indrid having provided Aubrey with a mer-charm of her own. As much as he loathes the idea, King Woodbridge has had to give the marriage his blessing; Dani is his only heir. If he disowns her, his throne passes to Indrid, a scenario he hates even more than a human/mer wedding.
Duck wore his collar all evening in case one of the king’s toadies got it into their heads to tell on him. It also matches the clothing Indrid bought him exceedingly well, and he’s not ashamed he admired himself while passing the mirror.
Indrid doffs his cloak as Duck closes the bedroom door, “You can remove that now my sweet.”
He leans against the carved driftwood, “And, uh, what if I don’t wanna?”
The mers hand pauses where it’s setting the leash on a table, “then I suggest you come here at once, pet.”
Not for the first time, Duck longs for a tail so he could speed through the water into Indrid’s arms. The mer is impatient as well, gives a wickedly charming grin as the lease whips out on it’s on to connect with the collar so he can yank Duck flush against him.
“Better, but you are still not as I need you.” Keeping the leash wrapped around one hand, the other starts on the buttons of Duck’s shirt. The human tries to help, only for tentacles to trap his wrists together, “thoughtful, pet, but I do so enjoy unwrapping you myself.”
“‘Drid, pleaseplease hurry.”
“Manners, pet” A tentacle thwacks his ass just as two others pull his pants to the ground.
“I said please” Duck laughs as Indrid nibbles his neck.
“Is that sufficient for someone who spoils you as much as I?” Indrid flutters his eyelashes.
Duck bumps their noses together, “Please, ‘Drid, want you to fuck me, you take such good care of me, wanna take care of you right back, I’ll make you feel so good darlin please.”
“Much better”
His remaining clothing falls away. Out of habit, he moves to cover himself, only for his arms and legs to be pulled outwards, leaving him spread-eagle in Indrid’s hold.
“Do not so much as think about hiding this perfect form from me, pet.” In the front folds between his tentacles, Indrid’s dick begins to emerge.
“Someone get off on admirin his handiwork?”
The smile softens, “I am admiring you, sweet one. You have the finest body I have ever laid eyes on; you did when we met, and you do now. I delight in holding it, touching it, these days I delight in seeing your comfort in your own skin.” A predatory glint returns to his eyes, “and of course, I like fucking you in it. In fact, that gives me an idea.”
Tentacles spin Duck in a half circle as Indrid swims to the mirror, meaning the human sees their reflections as the mer purrs in his ear, “I want you to see just how perfect you look on my cock, pet.”
“Jesusfuck, ‘Drid, yes” His own cock is hardening between his legs as small tendrils part and prod his ass; Indrid’s cock resembles a human one until it reaches it’s base, where the tendrils wait to push his partner further open or coax them to climax. They took some getting used to at first, cool and slick as the teased into Duck’s ass. Now he welcomes them, savors the tenderness with which they ready him.
Indrid coos and purrs in his ear, chirping whenever his cock grinds between Duck’s cheeks. The hand not holding the leash caresses his face while the tentacles see to everything else. And he means everything
“Fuck!” One coils around his dick as another rubs gently at his balls. The first time they tried this they were cautious, unsure how human anatomy would respond to the pressure and suckers. In Duck’s case, the answer was “cum so hard and fast it takes them both by surprise.”  Indrid had taken one look at the cock with cum still beading at the head and swallowed it to the root, not relenting until Duck came a second time.
“Ohhhnnnyes” The head of Indrid’s cock presses into him, “oh I never tire of how you feel, pet. So warm and welcoming for you, ah” he whispers in Duck’s ear, “master”
“‘Drid you, you keep that up I’m gonna cum any second.”
“Not before I show you something important. Look” Indrid forces his head forward with the collar. His reflection writhes and bounces eagerly on a cock he can’t see but can definitely feel, lips parted in a prolonged moan as Indrid lays claim to every inch of him.
“My perfect, handsome pet, letting me play with him as I see fit.”
“Damn rightAHfuck, I’m close, if you twist like that again I’m gonna-”
“Cum” Indrid orders. Duck obeys, spilling into the water with a groan of thanks. The mer waists no time, traps him in place with his tentacles so can fuck him hard and fast, one hand tugging the collar and the other fisted in his hair, “oh yes, yes pet, just a little more, you can take a little more, you must, because you are my spoiled little treasure and I can cum in you whenever I please.”
“Fuuck” Duck turns his head for a messy kiss as the mer empties into him with a muffled trill.
One by one, the tentacles relax, Duck’s feet gradually meeting the floor as Indrid trails kisses down his spine.
“Goodness, whatever did I do to deserve you, Duck Newton?”
“Save my life?” Duck turns, gathering the mer into a hug.
“I did that because it was the right thing.”
“You’re right. Hmmmm” he peppers Indrid’s face with kisses, “must be because you’re so damn perfect.”
Indrid hums happily as Duck maneuvers them into bed, “I doubt that’s it, but I am too tired to argue.”
Duck lays down beside him, looping his leg over Indrid’s waist as tentacle twines around his ankle. Maybe one day it will cling to his fins instead, but he’s not all that worried about that now. However he ends up, as long as he’s with Indrid, he knows life will be perfect.
Micro-mermaid Chenera Part 3 Finally
Tumblr media
Last and final part. Short and sweet. This was fun. I should do another series for Mermay 2022. Again, sorry Mermay 2021 I was late, by like, two months. But hey, better late than never? Hope you enjoyed reading this. I should have named this series, Against All Odds but it didn't occur to me until I was proofreading this last part. Oh well. Enjoy.
Micro-Mermaids
Chenera
Part 3
A few days later, you were all at the subadult stage to set your permanent adult colors as your parents seemed eager to get rid of their current brood so they could have some peace and quiet and start a new brooding season as Ethel scooped all of you up and put you into the colors tank with the other chameleon beta micros and it was almost instantaneous that your siblings began changing and morphing while pairing up with others from the other pairs and there was something in the water that seemed to accellerate the maturation process as you could feel yourself already start to form eggs within your abdomen as the males were already fighting for the attention of your sisters as your brothers could have any pick of any other female in the tank. Their fancy and flashy colors and bountiful fins were impressive but in your mind and heart, they were no match for Nona.
So here you sat, on the only part of the tank with black obsidian rocks, looking bittersweetly at your tail that still had Nona’s pattern on it and still missing him, and having no desire to ‘pair up’ with any of the others.
“Hey, you need to pair up.” Your sister Dina insisted as she took a break from her many suitors who were trying to playfully chase her around the tank.
“I am not attracted to any of the others.” You argued as you refused to move or even look at any other.
“Chenera, listen to me, if you don’t find a mate in this tank right here right now, you’ll be left as a single, and be sold as a single and put into a single’s tank where you stand a very slim chance of finding an equally attractive mate. And even if you don’t find a mate there, there are other breeders who specifically look for single females just to put them into harems, where you’ll be forced to mate with their males, who may be far more aggressive and mean and cruel than the ones from Ethel’s tanks who have been bred to treat the females with tender loving care. And you’ll have to compete with the other females just to be laid with, and you’ll raise your clutches all alone and your life span will be half of what it can be with a mated pair like this. I know you miss Nona, but he is a guppy micro, you’re a betta micro, a gold chameleon one at that. Your worth far exceeds his and there is no hope of ever meeting him again, let alone ever breeding with him. Betta micros can be two to three times the size of guppies and interbreeding among the different kinds never works, it's been tried and it usually ends in failures. Follow his own advice and let him go completely. If you wish to be all black, then so be it. But keeping this guppy pattern will only hurt your worth and keep the other males away, they're allready calling you "guppy girl" do you really want to be known as that for the rest of your life? You have to know that you're better than that! You have been through more than they could ever dream of, you may be smaller than the rest of us but you're stronger than any and all of us, you're a warrior, you beat up a dwarf gourami for crying out loud! You could bank on that and get that big red male over there instead of moping on this black rock at the bottom. It's either this or the harems by other breeders who would scoup you up in a heartbeat because you're different, but not in a good way. Do you want to die so quickly and so horribly?” She pressed anxiously.
You looked at her and just felt pity for her before you looked out over the tank of other potential mates, and while they did look strong and handsome, they were still no match for Nona in your heart and you just curled in on yourself, hugging your tail that still had Nona’s pattern on it, it was a sorry excuse for the real Nona but it was all you had before you found a cave and hid yourself away in it and dismissed every male that tried to approach, even getting aggressive towards the more insistant ones before all the males bonded to the others instead, leaving you alone completely.
The next day Ethel came back and happily scooped up the different pairs into separate bags for the shop as she counted up how many pairs she had before she noticed there were still a few unmated girls in the tank since these clutches were a bit girl heavy because the ratios were never perfectly equal, which was a good thing because the last batch of betta micros were boy heavy and the boys were getting a little too eager to mate up with a betta woman.
“Ok, all the others into the net now, I’ll put in with the single female tank.” Ethel said before you finally left your cave and swam into the net with the other females and into its own bag before you simply sat at the bottom of the bag, feeling the water shift with the motion of the car as Ethel drove you and your siblings and their mated pairs to the shop before she dumped the mated pairs into their own little tanks as the pairs eagerly hid away in the caves to start the mating process after their first meal in their new enclosures before you were dumped into another larger tank and there was only a pane of glass with several holes that separated the females from the males who were all waiting by the holes to see the new girls that didn’t get into mated pairs as the other girls eagerly swam around to the different holes to meet the guys who were a few to several cycles older than they were but who were desperate and eager to find a mate.
But one look at them and none of them were anything close to Nona, so you ignored their calls out to you as you found a cave-like hide and began digging under it, moving the sand and gravel out of your way to make a crevice like cave under the hide before you got to work, taking your long gold hair and putting it into a bun to collect and tear up bits of foliage to line your new cave with, just like how you used to with Nona and by the time you were done, Ethel came back by and noticed the new pairs and eagerly scooped them up and put them into their new enclosures as you settled into your new cave under the hide as your eggs began to mature, waiting to be fertilized but you kept them inside you and simply re-absorbed them. If Nona himself was not going to fertilize your eggs, you were never going to lay any as you fought with your own instincts to pair up and mate as you stared determinedly at Nona’s pattern on your tail.
Meanwhile on the other side where a line of guppy micro tanks were, Nona was doing the same exact thing, he had been here for over a week, and had dodged and ditched every attempt every female who tried to mate with him, even though his own instincts were screaming at him to try to mate with every mature and available female present, but if none of them were you, he was never going to pair up or mate with any other female as he worked on collecting new foliage for his cave under the hide, which was made a little difficult since he had grown into a pretty impressive guppy micro male. He still sorely missed you, and he had vowed he would keep doing this in remembrance of you for as long as he would live and if he could not fertilize your eggs, he would fertilize no one else’s. And he would continue to live his life alone, but committed and faithful to his memory of you. That sounded better than passing on what little good his own personal genetics had to another guppy woman who would only like him for his flashy colors and handsome pattern instead of his personality. That and no other guppy woman, could come close to your beauty.
“So what’s the story with this girl?” Amy asked as she walked by the beta tanks and saw you instantly dive towards your cave under the hide and noticed your unique coloring and pattern.
“Oh that one, that’s Chenera, she’s actually a gold headed chameleon betta micro- her siblings are all the ones you see with the same gold head and gold hair but much prettier colors. But when Ethel’s house was broken into by fairies when she was a youngling, one fairy yanked her out of her tank and tried stealing other younglings from the odds and ends tank when they dropped her into that tank. A betta micro’s instincts are always to hide, so she hid in a little cave under one of the hides in the tank and she ended up growing up in that tank with guppy micros, dwarf gouarmi micros, molly micros and all that, so that’s why she has that guppy pattern to her because chameleons change to their environment but at a certain stage when you put the sub adults into a brightly colored tank filled with semi precious stones and surrounded by those shimmering fabrics, they change themselves into these gorgeous colors. But she never did. So she’s actually on sale, but I don’t think she’ll ever breed for you because she has rejected every single male that’s ever met her, sometimes aggressively so, I think she’d be best as a pet only.” Samantha explained, repeating what Channel had told everyone at work.
“So she’s been through hell, like me, I’ll take her.” Amy said before she went around the store and bought everything she could for the perfect micro beta tank and all the foods and things she would need, including some guppy flakes because if you had grown up eating some micro fish flakes, you’d probably like to have them supplement your diet and it would be comforting to you as Samantha put a “sold” marker on the tank with your name and description on it and once Amy’s tank had been set up and stabilized, Amy came back and took you to your new home a week later.
The whole way though, you cried because you feared your sister’s words were about to come true but once your bag was put into the water and you looked around the new tank, you didn’t see any other micros in the tank and you didn't smell any other either as you looked from the tank to your new owner in confusion and once she tilted the bag so that you could swim out, you called out to see if any others were in the tank but were hiding before you tentatively explored the tank, discovering it before you realized- you were alone. You were not going to be forced to breed after all which was a big relief for you.
Granted it was going to be a lonely life but you were no stranger to solitude at this point. This tank was perfect. It was larger than your parent’s tank, it had been previously used, it wasn’t a brand new tank either, but it had been salvaged and refurbished and most of the plants had clearly come from some kind of sale since most of them had damaged leaves or broken stalks but in the new environment, they were regrowing and thriving with the proper care now, it had a surprising variety of foliage and mosses and little snails to eat up algae, mostly sand at the bottom, really soft sand too and a few spots of brightly colored gravel and several patches of moss you could lay in and soak up the rays from the lights. It had multiple caves and hides of all sizes and even a really nice amethyst geode, which is what Amy could afford, after she spent what she had on everything else since you had been on sale for such a steep discount and Samantha had given her everything else for practically a song because Amy was “rescuing” you and Samantha got to unload the less “pretty and perfect” items in the shop to help set up Amy’s tank because from a business perspective, you were kind of a “lost cause” but that didn’t mean your story was any less compelling, especially to Amy who was a self proclaimed bleeding heart.
But for Amy, she was used to rescuing those who needed rescuing as she had her fair share of three legged animals or one eyed animals or birds who had plucked out most of their feathers and were now sporting little “sweaters” and micro- mermaids now completed her menagerie.
And with a peaceful heart you realized the special geode that your new owner had bought for you and the way it had been placed in the sand that there was already a very soft cave under the geode, already prepared for you that you didn’t necessarily need to line with foliage to keep comfortable, but you couldn’t help yourself, you still lined it with moss and other soft foliage to make it perfect as Amy took pictures of you and your pattern in your new home as she fed you the special food she had bought you as you happily munched down before she took a chance and fed you guppy flakes as well as you let go of your beta food to grab them as you ate those reverently, remembering how you used to eat those with Nona, having missed the colorful and flavorful flakes more than you had thought you would.
After a couple days and you seemed to settle in quite nicely, not hiding in the cave at all, still preferring to sleep in it though, actually spending your days exploring every inch of the tank and discovering all the fun things about it and enjoying all the enrichment it had been filled with and laying in the soft moss and taking naps, braiding your own hair so it wouldn't tangle, making your new space wholly yours as you rearranged it a little to suit your liking and improving the flow of water and functionality before Amy returned to the store and asked to speak with everyone involved with you and your story before she got a hold of Channel.
“So you’re the one who found Chenera in the odds and ends tank?” Amy asked her.
“Yup, it was quite something…” Channel explained before she repeated the story and remembered the key part, how there was a guppy male that you kept holding onto and kept trying to hide and protect and how once you got into the net, you had camouflaged yourself to his pattern but how you kept that pattern once you were taken out of that tank.
“Can you show me where the male guppy male micro is? Did you sell him already?” Amy asked.
“No we haven’t, he won’t pair up and he hides in caves he makes under the hides themselves, and he keeps lining bits of foliage in them, he’s actually right over here.” Channel said as she led the way over to where his tank was before she got the flashlight on her phone and shined the light into the little cave as he tried to hide from the light but Amy recognized his tail pattern as the same pattern on you.
“He’s actually on sale as a pet only because he refuses to pair up and mate with anything and forcing micros to mate can send them into a depression and they can die prematurely.” Channel explained.
“I’ll take him. I already have the perfect set up for him.” Amy insisted as she showed Channel the tank before you had moved into it as Channel had the hardest time catching Nona and putting him in a bag for Amy.
Amy bought “baby bits” and put them in the bag with Nona who starred reproachfully at the baby food. He had been bought and was going to be forced to mate with a guppy and produce hatchlings despite his best efforts. He was hoping he would have avoided this but it seemed that there was no way for him to keep avoiding it now as Amy happily bought him and brought him home and put his bag into the tank.
When you heard the lid open you came out of your cave from putting new foliage in it but stopped and hid away again when you saw a bag with another micro in the bag as once again, your fear and anxiety that your new owner had bought you a mate and was going to expect you to mate with whatever she bought as you tied your hair up and armed yourself. You’d rather die a virgin than be forced to mate with any other.
Meanwhile Nona stared out into the empty tank in relief that there were no other guppy micro women already at the bag, ready to pounce on him the moment he would be let loose, he’d rather die a bachelor than be forced to mate with another and once the water had been acclimated Amy let Nona go and sat in front of the tank with baited breath as Nona hesitantly began exploring before she saw him call out.
You stiffened in your cave at the sound of a male’s voice as you got a whiff of the water that he had come from that had been in his tank, it smelled foreign but you could smell a male in the water as once again, your body reminded that you had new eggs that were now moments away from being mature and ready to be fertilized as you fought with your instincts once again.
His voice was deeper and much more mature than most others you had heard before as you stayed in your cave, ready to attack if he came near you.
Nona could smell a female in the water though, but it wasn’t quite like anything he had smelled before, it smelled good actually as his own body reacted to it, as his body’s instincts were screaming at him that it was time to find this female and fertilize her eggs that were already at the proper stage to be fertilized. But even though he could smell this female, there was no sign of her as Nona carefully and hesitantly inspected the tank, looking for her and calling out to see if anyone else was there before he followed his nose and found the little cave under the geode hide and slowly approached the mouth of the cave but once he was about to climb in to see if it was occupided, he saw you and froze as you did the same, letting the two pieces of gravel fall from your hands as you pulled yourself towards him and stared in disbelief at a very grown up Nona as he stared at you in the same way, in awed wonder, you had grown and matured and while he could still recognize you, you were even more beautiful now all grown up and mature.
“Chenera?” He breathed.
“Nona?” You asked, almost afraid to believe your eyes.
“Yeah, it’s me, Nona, wow you’ve...oof.” Nona began before you quickly left the cave and tackled him to the floor rolling with him in the soft sand and holding him and kissing him all over his face as he did the same as you were both laughing and crying at being reunited as Amy recorded it and cheered before you and Nona disappeared into the little cave under the geode to continue with your reunion.
“I thought I would never see you again.” You cried happily as you hugged him tight, his now adult size and pattern still of some resemblance of his sub adult pattern that you had copied onto yourself but he had gotten better with age.
“Me either.” He confessed as he happily kissed you all over and held you just as tightly, his heart feeling like it was going to burst with happiness as he recognized his own subadult pattern on you, that you had kept for all this time. He felt that you would have changed like all the others he had seen in their little dishes as other buyers had bought them in pairs along with their clutches of eggs in other geodes and carried them throughout the store, their gold heads and gorgeous colors and impressive sizes still eye catching but his heart hurt too much to see if any of them had been you.
Finally, after what felt like eons of time, you were back together and in a similar place where you had first met, in a cave, under a hide, but this time, under a wonderful geode of your own. And while you were still a little bigger than him, but still smaller than the rest of your family, he was used to the size difference of the females being bigger than the males and while you had gotten used to seeing males with fins twice as big as yours, somehow, Nona’s fins were just to your liking because of who they were attached to.
“Please, I have eggs already, I can feel them and I don’t want to keep reabsorbing them, fertilize them, please.” You pleaded between heated kisses and that was all the permission Nona needed before his cock speared your entrance and he began to make love to you in your little cave curling around you and holding you and caressing you and rutting you so vigorously into the sand underneath you as you found your sexual release and Nona did as you asked and fertilized every available egg in your egg sack, your abdomen getting even larger from the fullness of them before you led him to the geode and together you placed each one, carefully into its socket surrounded by facets of amethyst.
“So this is how beta micro’s lay their eggs, in geodes.” Nona noted as he helped catch each one and put it into its place, already seeing signs that they were fertilized and that the fertilization had taken successfully. Never been brave enough to even dream that this was possible.
“Yes.” You giggled as you did the same. Since it was your first, official clutch. It was rather small, but oh so precious as Amy was once again, outside the tank with her phone, recording it.
“Well, fingers crossed, and they can hatch.” She smiled happily, happy to see such a star crossed lover’s pair be reunited and mate and already get to laying clutches in just a matter of moments.
Over the next several weeks, Nona and yourself took turns waving fresh oxygenated water over the eggs, watching as the little micro-merbabies grow and develop. Feeding each other and even when you had no other eggs to lay, continuing to mate for the fun of it as well as to bond even closer all over your new home as you eagerly awaited for the clutch to hatch.
Then one day, just as the shells of the eggs grew super thin and soft- the babies began to squirm and hatch into your waiting hands as well as Nona’s as you instinctively gave them their first milk and brought them up to the surface so they could get a gulp of air for their swim bladders before touching your head to theirs, the gold transferring to their heads and hair as well as you could already see that the middle of their tails had the same guppy pattern that their father had but otherwise were the perfect mix of you and him as you named each and every one as you helped them eat their first meal, “the baby bits” and after they ate one baby bit, they caught another before Amy put in some baby guppy flakes for them as they all caught the flakes with their other hand and began to congregate in one of the many super soft sand pits, each one with a baby bit in one hand and a flake in the other, taking a bite out of both as you and Nona continued to repeat the process until all of the eggs hatched successfully as the shells dissintergrated in the water completely, before you happily gathered your little family in the pit and began your new lives as parents, and living long, happy lives together. Raising a new breed of micros- betta-guppy micros.
“I can’t believe I’m listening to your bullshit right now,” Bakugou grumbled into his phone over the sound of the waves crashing against the rocks, looking around the dock.
“Dude, Sero and I are telling you that there’s something really weird happening around there!” Kaminari urged on the other line, the panic evident in his voice. “I read that so many people patrolled in that area and they said that something fishy’s going on. Just check it out for me?”
Bakugou laughed. “Are you too fucking scared to check it out yourself?”
“No!” Kaminari blurted in annoyance. “It’s just… electricity and water aren’t a good combination.”
“Sounds like a fucking excuse to me but whatever. I’ll see what you’re whining about.” Bakugou hung up shortly after, shoving the device into his back pocket as he walked along the wooden panels. He scanned the area, not seeing anything out of the ordinary or anything to be frightful for. That idiot’s complaining for nothin’...
The only peculiar thing about this sector was that usually docks and ports would have various boats attached to it but this had nothing, just a wooden walkway staring right into the mouth of the ocean. Bakugou shrugged, assuming that his friends were blindly believing blatantly idiotic rumors. He wouldn’t be surprised if this was a prank they were trying to pull either as the pair would often mess around with him and attempt to send him off on wild goose chases.
With that thought in mind, Bakugou walked off into the opposite direction, making his way towards his car so he could get back to his agency until the sound of laughter stopped him in his tracks, one that sounded like bells ringing and echoing in the air. He spun around, eyes averting in all directions to try and locate the source of the melodic laughter. The area was abandoned and the sun beaming in the sky would reveal anyone roaming around easily. That was why Bakugou was even more baffled when the sound repeated, loud enough to be heard over the collision of the splashing waves.
Not thinking twice, Bakugou approached the source of the sound, believing that this was what Kaminari and Sero were so afraid of. He got to the end of the dock, his feet on the edge as he attempted to search for the mysterious voice once more.
“What the fuck am I even doing here?” Bakugou grumbled to himself, deciding to head back after failing to find the voice and once again annoyed with himself for even coming here in the first place.
“Whoa, I didn’t think people actually came on this side of the portside anymore,” a voice quipped just as Bakugou was walking away.
He turned around, taking a few steps back as he gasped to see a person in the water, smiling up at him. “The fuck you think you’re doing?! It’s too dangerous to be in the water!”
You were taken aback by his sudden concern, your lips curling upwards in amusement. “Now this is odd. It’s not everyday a human is worried about me.”
“What are you--” Bakugou stopped as he saw you dove underwater, causing Bakugou to toss his shoes and phone to the side. Even if he was off duty for his job, he was still a hero and he wouldn’t let anyone drown themselves, no matter how stupid they were for doing so.
Just as he was about to begrudgingly jump into the water, your head popped back up, even more amused than you were before. A human was willing to risk his life to save you. Bakugou sighed, irritated that he was even entertaining you or that you were pleased by this in the first place. “You think this is funny? Just get out of the fucking water, you’re wasting my time.”
You laughed, the sound ringing in Bakugou’s ears. “I’m sorry, maybe this will make more sense if I do this.”
Before Bakugou could question what you were doing this time, you swam over to the edge of the dock, hoisting yourself up over one of the many ginormous boulders lodged into the side. Bakugou nearly choked at the sight before him, feeling like his eyes were deceiving him.
But it was not a deception. There you were, sitting atop the boulder, with two shells covering your chest and the rest of your upper body adorned with miniature seashells. Your lower half was inhuman as a large tail, iridescent hues of blue and purple sheen covering it.
“As you can see I’m not human, so you don’t have to worry about me,” you said, grinning from ear-to-ear, completely beguiled by his flabbergasted expression. It was always funny whenever humans reacted this way to seeing you, although it had been years since you’d last seen a human. “I’m a mermaid.”
“Y-You’re a what now?!” Bakugou asked, absolutely bewildered. When Kaminari had informed him about odd occurrences happening in this dock in the past, Bakugou suspected anything but a mermaid to appear.
You maneuvered down the boulder using your arms, settling back in the water and swimming closer to the dock to get a better look at Bakugou. He took a step back, flustered by how intense your staring was. “W-What? Why’re you giving me that weird ass look?”
You chuckled, resting your head in your hands. “The last times humans showed up in this part, they came because they wanted to see the ‘legend’ of the mermaids that live here. And everytime I had to deal with those humans, I had to scare them off so that my people could live in peace. This is the first time someone has come here without any ill intentions.”
Bakugou took a small step forward, looking down to verify once more that your tail was real and not a figment of his imagination. You giggled, lifting your tail up slightly above the water. “It’s real. You weren’t imagining anything.”
Bakugou felt disconcerted by this whole situation, unable to comprehend what to do or how to go about this. He knew he had to return to work soon but he didn’t know how to just walk away from this knowing that you were a full fledged mermaid. You rose a brow at him. “You’re not going to go to your friends and have them come down here, are you? Because I’m really not looking to have a fight with anyone.”
Bakugou shook his head slowly. “It’s none of their business to come down here. I just came ‘cause my friend’s a fucking pussy and was nagging me to check out this area.”
You smiled, grateful and also a little surprised that a human had no desire to exploit you and your species’ existence. “I appreciate it. You know… you’re not that bad. I’ve always despised you humans for everything that you’ve done, but I think you’re pretty okay.”
Bakugou scoffed, looking off to the side. “Whatever.”
You laughed at his reaction, looking up at him and taking in his features. He looked nothing like any human you’d ever seen. His hair was spiky, not budging against the rhythm of the wind beating against it. His eyes were the brightest, most intense shade of scarlet red, making you feel intimidated just by one look. And yet he was handsome, too.
“You’re really pretty, you know that?” You said bluntly.
Bakugou’s eyes widened, his cheeks inflamed. “Shut up! Just mind your business and do whatever fish shit you do. I’m leaving.”
You watched as he stomped off, ten times more amused than you were before. He was interesting to say the least, and you were hoping that he would keep his word and not bring any unwanted attention to your existence. But somehow, you felt like you could trust this beautiful stranger.
***
Since that day, Bakugou felt himself physically and mentally drawn to the dock. He started out by stopping by occasionally, curious to see you once more. Your mere existence intrigued him, although he would never admit it. Slowly with time, his visits became more frequent and you began catching him in his act. So you joined him, talking to the only human you’d ever met that was curious about you solely because he wanted to get to know you.
And you wanted to know more about him, often finding yourself waiting by the boulders for his visits. And the more you two met, the more you learned about one another. It was your first time meeting a pro hero, understanding why Bakugou felt obligated to help you when first meeting you.
And Bakugou learned about you and your kingdom. You were a princess of an underwater kingdom called Coara, guarding your kingdom from prying and nosy humans, many of whom were scientists who would go as far as wanting to dissect you and your people if they had gotten their grubby hands on you. Bakugou frowned whenever he heard the anger in your voice when voicing your opinion on how aggravated and fed up you had been with such pestering people.
You were interesting to say the least. Most people’s first impressions of Bakugou were mostly negative, people often complaining about his abrasiveness or that he was too rude for their liking. But not to you. Even the way he spoke to you was intriguing for you, you finding yourself into him even more than you already were.
But the more you thought about him and were around him, the more you felt unsettled by your new friendship. All your life you had worked to gain this peace that had finally remained. You warned yourself that humans were bad news, vowing to reprimand anyone who so much as approached this area. And yet you wanted to be around Bakugou more and more, feeling disappointed if he didn’t show up on certain days due to his demanding occupation.
And just like any other day, you waited by the boulders, growing impatient as the sun had begun to set, casting an orange hue over the sea. “He’s late…” you muttered to yourself, returning back underwater for the remainder of the night.
Although Bakugou had informed you previously that his job had irregular working times, meaning it was never certain that he was free on certain days, you felt annoyed with him. In fact, for the past few days he hadn’t shown up at your usual spot. Since he never had any way of contacting you, as you were a mermaid and had no reason to be acquainted with human-made technological devices like cell phones, Bakugou was never able to tell you when he wouldn’t be able to see you. If he were being completely honest, he still couldn’t believe that he was regularly meeting with a mermaid in the first place.
So for his lack of visits, you decided to take matters into your own hands.
“I really don’t think this is a good idea, Y/N,” one of your closest friends urged, looking around the dock as it had been quite some time since she had even bothered to go above the surface from the safety of her underwater home.
You waved her off. “It’s fine, Alicia. As long as no one else finds out about this, which is why I trust that you won’t say a word about this to the others.”
Alicia scoffed. “Of course not, Your Highness.”
You gave her a look as she laughed at you teasingly. “You know you’re the only one allowed to not call me that because it weirds me out when you say it.”
She grinned, throwing her arm over your shoulder. “That’s because we’ve been stuck to the hip since day one! I’d do anything for you.”
You smiled softly, looking around the area once more to confirm that no one was watching or listening in. Then you reached over to the dock, pulling yourself up with the help of Alicia pushing the rear of your tail. Twisting your body around you sat back, flexing your tail above water.
“No turning back now!” You exclaimed, placing your hands on your tail and activating your quirk. As you were a mermaid, you still were born with quirks like humans. Similar to how some animals have intellectual type quirk that allow them to communicate with humans, you still had a quirk. Your quirk was Legs, giving you the ability to provide yourself and others with human legs at your command. You could also take them away at will and this quirk only benefited those who didn’t already have legs. It was an odd quirk but it was yours. It was often used in the past, back when the people of Coara were interested in human life, and you and your mother had the same quirk. It was tradition that the first daughter of the royal family inherited this quirk as a means to make amends with the humans. But since you had taken the throne, the selfish science oriented humans had no intention of keeping an alliance as they only wanted to probe and dissect you and your people for their own benefits. It had been years since the last scientist had caused trouble, leaving you and your kingdom with a short period of peace.
And you had every intention of keeping the peace.
Using your quirk, your fingertips created an amber glow, adorning your lustrous tail into two legs. You groaned, stretching your new limbs out in the air. “It’s been a while since I’ve had these. I need to stretch them out.”
Alicia chuckled, retrieving the mound of seaweed she had collected per your request. Her quirk gave her the ability to make cloth and clothing out of any form of vegetation and plants. She needed to utilize her quirk as you couldn’t just waltz around the city with only a shell bra covering your chest and nothing covering your lower body.
“It’s pretty hot out now so I made something more freeing for you to wear,” Alicia said, handing your clothes. You quickly changed into them, slipping on your underwear, top, and shorts. She even made a pair of simple sandals out of coral and branches. In no time, you were ready to head out into the city.
“You really like him, huh?” Alicia asked, staring up at you as you rose to your feet.
You rolled your eyes at her. “We’re friends. He’s the first person I’ve met since I was a child, roaming around the human world by my mother’s side, that has shown genuine compassion and interest in our people.”
Alicia sighed. She knew that this was more than a newfound friendship, however, you were too blinded to understand how you truly felt about Bakugou yourself. Even he didn’t know how he felt about you. “Just be careful. Please.”
You smiled, crouching down in front of her. “It’ll be alright. Trust me. I just want to see him for just a second and I’ll return as soon as possible!”
“Alright. Tell your boyfriend I said ‘hi’!” Alicia called out teasingly, earning a glare from you as you strode off towards the city.
***
It took about twenty minutes for you to find your way into the city as it had been quite some time since your last visit. Nevertheless you made your way through, stopping and asking bystanders for directions to Bakugou’s agency.
On the other hand, Bakugou obviously didn’t suspect a thing. He was patrolling around the sector as he usually did, keeping an eye out for peculiar events. Kirishima joined him that day, walking beside him as the two men strode through the city.
“It’s not everyday that we’re asked to patrol together,” Kirishima commented, waving to a fan who was quite excited for his favorite hero to be out and about in public.
“Makes my life easier so I can leave early,” Bakugou responded as the two turned the corner.
Kirishima glanced over at him. “Why, you got someone you’ve been dying to see?”
Bakugou was startled, regaining his composure to not give any hints. How did he know? “The fuck are you talking about? I’m not seeing anyone.”
“Come on, ever since Kaminari and Sero made you go to that weird place you always seem too busy to hang out with us.” Kirishima looked over at Bakugou as he seemed irritated. He didn’t want anyone to find out about your existence, understanding that you and your people’s lives would be put in danger. And he didn’t know what he would do with himself if he were responsible for anything that could happen to you.
Before Kirishima could prod any further into the matter, the two heroes stopped in their tracks, Bakugou personally getting ever more agitated than he already was at the sight of Monoma standing in their path.
“Monoma, I didn’t know you were in town,” Kirishima said.
Monoma smirked. “I’ve been around. More importantly, looks like Mr. Number One here is going to fall down in the rankings soon enough.”
Bakugou didn’t bother responding, ignoring him and walking right past him, causing Monoma to be taken aback. He turned around, staring Bakugou down. “You’re not even concerned with what I just said?”
Bakugou turned his head around, glaring at Monoma. “I don’t give a single flying fuck about whatever it is you’re running your trap for. I’ve got better things to do than hear you spew out some weird ass bullshit.”
Kirishima stifled his laughter, catching up to Bakugou with a few strides. Monoma’s agency had tried for years now to help Monoma reach his way up to the rankings, only able to reach the number two spot and falling short from Bakugou himself. Bakugou was simply the indisputable best, no matter how hard Monoma tried to dethrone him from the rankings.
And this absolutely infuriated him.
Monoma huffed, annoyed with the blonde who had gotten on his nerves since their days back in U.A. “I guess the rumors are true. You’ve changed these last few months. I wonder why that is…”
Bakugou stopped walking, now a few feet away from Monoma. He didn’t like the way he spoke, his words indicating that he was keeping something from him. For the final time he turned his head, staring daggers in Monoma's direction. “Keep worrying about falling from the rankings instead of being up my ass all the fucking time, dipshit.”
Bakugou kept moving, Kirishima keeping up with his pace as the pair made their way back to Bakugou’s agency. Kirishima chuckled. “Man, I’ve never really liked Monoma but he’s been pretty obsessed with you ever since you were named number one. It’s a little weird if you ask me.”
“I can barely remember that fucker’s name. I really don’t give a shit about what he does, so long as he’s not bothering me,” Bakugou mumbled as the two of them waited by the stoplight at the intersection in front of the agency. The light finally changed to green and Bakugou and Kirishima crossed the street, opening the giant glass doors to the building. Kirishima went over to the receptionists, filing any reports they had to complete.
“Ground Zero, there’s someone here who wanted to see you,” one of the receptionists said. “She’s waiting in the office.”
“Alright,” Bakugou said, mentally agitated as he didn’t want to deal with anyone right now. Nevertheless, he made his way down the hall and into his office, prepared to meet an annoying official working for the government or a crazed reporter that somehow was able to break into his agency. But he was pleasantly surprised to see a woman’s back facing him as he entered his office.
“What is this about?” Bakugou asked the woman curtly.
You turned around, causing Bakugou to nearly stop breathing. He didn’t know how, but you looked even more stunning standing in front of him than you did in your mermaid form. Your hair was slightly damp, the locks curling upwards. But your skin was practically gleaming against the light in the room, your smile sealing the deal that could cause Bakugou’s heart to palpitate irregularly in no time.
Just as he thought you couldn’t amaze him more, you did tenfold. “H-How the…”
You laughed, amused like you always were with the way he tended to be speechless by your mere presence. “Surprised to see me? I thought I’d pay a visit.”
Bakugou was absolutely bewildered, eyes widened and mouth agape with incredulity. “But you’re a fucking mermaid? Where’s your tail? How are you standing? What--”
“I have a quirk that lets me turn my tail into legs,” you stated blankly. “It’s nothing too special, my family has had a long line of inheritance with this quirk and I decided to use it since it’s been a while.”
“And why did you come? I was gonna stop by today,” Bakugou asked, waiting and wanting to hear you say what he wanted to hear.
You paused momentarily, your (E/C) eyes boring into his vermillion ones. You visually travelled down his figure, taking in his hero costume that you hadn’t seen previously. His biceps bulged out, his stature taller than what you had expected. He was even more handsome standing before than he was sitting beside you.
Bakugou felt himself blush under your obvious staring as you didn’t want to mask what you were doing or how you were feeling. You looked back into his eyes. “I missed you, Bakugou. I can’t explain why, but I missed you. And I couldn’t stand waiting idly by for you to come to me. So here I am.”
Before Bakugou could be even more flustered than he already was, the door to his office opened wide, a certain dark-haired man swinging his arm around Bakugou. “It’s been a while, man! Where have you been?” Sero exclaimed excitedly. Kirishima stood behind him at the door and the two men finally acknowledged you, shocked to see such a stunning woman in Bakugou’s office. Sero had stopped by as Kirishima had texted him, letting him know that he and Bakugou were back in the agency. But they were both pleasantly surprised by your presence.
Sero looked over at Bakugou, recognizing the light pink tinted on his cheeks as he smirked, putting two and two together. “Man, so this is what you’ve been doing recently!”
Bakugou glared at him, shaking Sero off him. As he knew two of his closest friends well enough to understand that they would pester you and bombard you with thousands of questions, he took matters into his own hands by grabbing your forearm and leading you out of the office.
Ignoring Kirishima and Sero’s shouts behind him as well as the stares he received from his receptionists, Bakugou led you out of the building and back to the streets. You looked down at where Bakugou was holding you, his hand still warm under his gloves. It was the first time a human had touched you.
Once he could confirm that his friends weren’t behind him following him, Bakugou let go of you, keeping his distance but still walking beside you. He looked off to the side, not wanting you to see his inflamed face. “I’ll walk you back to the dock. It’s not safe for you here.”
You smiled at him. “I appreciate your concern but you don’t have to worry about me. I’ve been amongst humans like this before.”
“Just… let me do this for you, alright?” Bakugou urged gently.
Regardless you nodded, smiling to yourself. Humans were more interesting than they had seemed before, or at least Bakugou was in a league of his own. You wanted to know everything about him, you wanted to constantly be around him, and he was all that was on your mind lately. You were slowly understanding that what you were feeling for him was crossing the line from friendship to something more and it frightened you. All your life you had known humans to be vile, selfish creatures who would do anything for their own gain. But here you were walking beside the most considerate man you’d ever met, exceeding the mermen of your kingdom in both looks and personality.
But as much as you liked him, you didn’t want to pry any further. He was still a human and you were a ruler of a kingdom. You had decided to end things here, savoring and basking in the moment as much as you could until you had to finally cut all ties with Bakugou. And you knew when that moment would arrive, you wouldn’t be able to recover for a while. You had spent almost every evening with him on that dock, your special place with him, talking for hours upon hours. You liked how flustered he would get whenever you complimented his looks or how proud he seemed when he spoke about his occupation and passion. You could hear him talk, even if he was just cursing someone out, all day long. But soon enough, you would never hear from him again.
You shook your head, wanting to rid your mind of such saddening thoughts, deciding to change the subject instead. “Is it okay to leave your friends like that?”
“They’ll live. Your secret is more important right now,” Bakugou said, not realizing how touched you had been by his words. He truly had every intention of keeping your identity a secret and the more you were around him, the more you were falling for him. This was slowly becoming a dangerous situation, but you didn’t care, not in the moment at least.
You looked down at your feet as the two of you made your way back to the dock, the amount of people around you decreasing as you got closer. And the closer you got, the more despondent you became as you realized this was the last moment you would have with him.
“What’s wrong?” Bakugou asked, snapping you away from your thoughts.
You looked up at him abruptly, his scarlet eyes penetrating right through your soul and being. You smiled reassuringly. “It’s nothing, don’t worry about it.” Bakugou looked over at you, deciding to drop the subject once the two of you finally reached the dock.
As you grew closer, a blonde man who you didn’t recognize stood on the dock, looking around the area. He was particularly looking down into the water, directly above your kingdom. You felt your heart stop as you began to become frantic that your home was found.
Bakugou extended his arm in front of you, ceasing your footsteps as you moved to confront the man. “Don’t go. You’ll get in danger. I’ll deal with him.” You looked at Bakugou, who had an expression you had never seen. He was calm and yet his nostrils were flared. You knew he was livid.
Bakugou trudged towards the man, infuriated to see Monoma poking his nose where he didn’t belong. “The fuck do you think you’re doing here?”
Monoma smirked, looking beyond Bakugou’s shoulder to see you, staring you up and down and intently at your legs. You felt disgusted by his gaze, wanting to jump back into the water as soon as possible.
Monoma flicked his gaze back to Bakugou. “The rumors are that you’ve got a girlfriend which is why you’ve been slacking off recently. So I followed you over here a few days ago to see that you’ve got a mermaid by your side now. Even more interesting…” His voice trailed off and he smirked at you as you grimaced under his stare. “She looks exactly like a human.”
He let out a bellowing laugh, exasperating Bakugou even more than he already did with his presence alone. “It’d be a shame if more people found out about this…”
Bakugou didn’t hesitate or think twice to grab Monoma by the collar, his fingers curling against the fabric as uncontrollable sparks emerged from both hands. “If you even think about opening your trap up about this I’ll rip you apart limb from fucking limb.”
Although Monoma wouldn’t admit it, he was slightly intimidated by Bakugou’s threat, but even more so he found this whole situation to have been a stroke of luck. He knew exactly what he had to do. Monoma brought his hand up, grabbing Bakugou’s forearm that was clutching his collar. “Tell you what, I’ll let this whole thing go. If I’m being honest,” his eyes whipped over to you, causing a shiver to go down your spine, “I really don’t give a damn about you and your fish people. That’s the last thing I care about. I’ll let this all go… on one condition.”
“Spit it out, you bitch, you’re testing my patience,” Bakugou snarled through gritted teeth.
Monoma chuckled humorlessly, smirking at you once more. You felt disgusted and defeated all at once. You had promised your people that this was a time for peace, that you wouldn’t let the humans that you hated so much ruin anything for you and your kingdom. And here was a human threatening the life of Coara like the lives of the mermaids and mermen meant nothing and were replaceable.
You wanted to despise humans as much as you had before, but you couldn’t. Not when Bakugou was a human as well.
“I’ll let this go… if you give up your ranking.” Monoma laughed once more, feeling Bakugou’s grip loosen from the shock.
Bakugou had worked day and night, protecting civilians left and right and defeating any villain that came his way to be number one. Even you understood this as Bakugou had explained hero rankings and how hard he worked. You could see he was a respectable man who would do anything to show others his worth. And here was a spineless bastard trying to rip it all away from Bakugou.
Monoma shook Bakugou’s hand from him, smirking cruelly at him. “You see, I know you won’t give up your ranking for some rotten fish. Either way, I’m going to enjoy watching your little girlfriend’s life crumble before your very eyes--”
Before Monoma could yap and run his mouth more than he already had, Bakugou sent a right hook flying, contacting Monoma’s jaw and pummeling him to the floor of the wooden dock. You gasped, not suspecting him to do that, and took a few steps towards him. He turned his head at you, raising his hand to stop you from getting closer. He didn’t know what Monoma would do to you just to spite him. You felt hopeless, wanting to help Bakugou and your people were still in the back of your mind. What was the right thing to do in this situation? What could you do?
Monoma spit the blood out from his mouth, wiping his bloodied lip and rose to his feet. He cackled once more. “I knew you were too much of a coward to do--”
“I’ll do it,” Bakugou said in one breath, causing you and Monoma to be appalled.
“Bakugou! Don’t do it!” You called out in concern. You would do anything for your people but not at the expense of years of hard work Bakugou had put in.
Bakugou ignored you momentarily. “I’ll give it up, my ranking. But if you take back your work I’ll fucking--”
Monoma rose a hand up in the air to cease his threats. “Don’t worry about that, I don’t give a damn about you or your girlfriend.” He extended his hand out at Bakugou, grinning in absolute delight. “We have a deal?”
Bakugou stared at his pale hand, his own fists clenching at his sides. Even so, he didn’t hesitate to shake hands with his nemesis, gripping his hand as tightly as he could. Monoma winced, wriggling his hand from Bakugou’s hold and rubbing it once he got free. Monoma laughed once more, walking past Bakugou and towards you. You stepped to the side, wanting to avoid him at all costs. He looked down at you, smirking. “For some rotten fish, you’re pretty hot.”
You wanted to puke from anger and disgust, staring daggers into his back as he walked away with delight and glee. Monoma waved his hand back. “I’ll send the paperwork to your office tonight, Ground Zero.”
Once he was a considerable distance from you, you ran towards Bakugou, joining him on the dock. “Why did you do that? Why would you give your ranking up?”
Bakugou sighed, looking down at the water and the boulders that you always sat upon during your frequent meetings. He slipped his gloves, boots, and socks off, sitting on the edge of the dock and dipping his feet into the water. You watched as he did so, not understanding his silence. Nonetheless, you joined him, slipping off the sandals Alicia made you and sitting right beside him. This was the closest the two of you had ever physically been.
“It didn’t feel right,” Bakugou said, avoiding your eye contact. “It’s my fucking fault that dipshit found out. I couldn’t just walk away knowing that I was putting you in danger.”
You smiled softly, shaking your head. “I’ve dealt with idiots like him before. I would’ve been fine. But you worked so hard to get where you are now.”
Bakugou turned to face you, his eyes just as intense as they always were. “You don’t get it. I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if something happened to you. A ranking is a fucking ranking. I know I’m the best, that fucknut weaseled his way into becoming the new number one now. But your life means more to me than that.”
You were astonished, blown away by his selflessness. But Bakugou didn’t recognize his actions as being selfless as he continued blaming himself for putting your life in danger. And you recognized this by his hurt expression as he was physically grimacing. You smiled, lifting your hand up and cupping his cheek. Your palms were cold against Bakugou’s cheek, sending tingles down his spine, but your fingertips held the softest touch. “You’re amazing, Bakugou. This isn’t your fault. I don’t blame you, not even a little bit. I chose to see you everyday, I could’ve just stayed in my palace if I didn’t want to see you. But I came here because I like being around you.”
Bakugou stared at you, basking in your beauty. He had never met anyone like you as you were truly a one of kind being. You were tenderhearted, a leader, ambitious, and driven for others. Bakugou knew by now that he had no control over his feelings for you, not giving a damn about the consequences. He wanted to hold you, protect you against anyone who would even think of harming you.
“Do you regret being with me? Do you regret meeting with a human that could harm your people?” Bakugou questioned.
You shook your head, not hesitating to answer immediately. “There isn’t a fiber in me that feels that way. Being with you has given me faith in humanity.” You took back your thoughts earlier, knowing full well you couldn’t abandon him now, not when he protected you.
Bakugou nodded. “Alright. Then don’t mind when I do this.”
Before you could let the words ‘do what?’ escape from your lips, Bakugou closed the gap between the two of you, gently locking your lips with his own. It was a pleasant surprise, making you realize that humans were softer than they seemed. He smelled of burnt sugar, locking in how sweet he truly was. He was gentle despite how caustic he seemed to others. But you knew him, you had spent months with him, and you had no intention of letting him go now.
You pulled away, your chest rising and falling slowly. He was beautiful, more beautiful than you could ever describe into words. You were willing to go off the deep end for him, the stunning human who risked his career for your life. And you had no intention of leaving him.
Siren!Marvin x Sailor!Jackie - My Jolly Sailor Bold
Yes, there is a reference to that song both in title and in the story, here’s a lil somethin for MerMay also I really just thought of what if, Marvin but s i r e n and my head went wRITE THAT DOWN WRITE THAT DOWN- anyway I hope y’all enjoy? Its killin  me not editin the dialogue text like I usually do BUT i just dont have time so r.i.p
Jackie was gathering his equipment up and then placing it in the boat, as he finished that up, his friends had come up to him, one of them shaking their heads “Jackie… I’m worried about this… You’re going to one of the most dangerous spots out there!” Another friend spoke up “Yeah… There’s talk of a siren that owns those parts!” Jackie tilted his head “A siren? One of those old folklore tales?” He grinned “Hah! I don’t believe in such fairy tales!” Another friend shook their head “J-Jackie… Sirens are serious business! They aren’t just folklore or fairy tales, sirens are REAL and they are evil, horrible creatures! Haven’t you heard?” The other friend interrupted “About the mysterious disappearances of many sailors out there?! People have even been nicknaming that place The Siren’s Sea!” Jackie rolled his eyes “Look, guys, I appreciate you trying to look out for me but I promise, I’ll be fine! If anything tries to come after me, well… I’ve got some pretty powerful equipment, I can take care of myself!” And then Jackie was climbing aboard his boat, double checking to make sure everything was all there and ready to set sails!
His friends pleaded and begged, one stepped forward and gave Jackie a hug “Jackie… We can’t stop you from doing this but please… I fear as though you’ll ne’er return again if you head to The Siren’s Sea…” Jackie sighed and hugged his friend back, pulling the rest of them into a group hug “Guys, I promise… I’ll be fine, I WILL return to you, I swear… I’m the best sailor around and I know I can handle myself out there! I’ve made a vow to explore every part of the sea I can, and this place is no exception! I’ll be back soon!” His friends sighed and waved Jackie off as he set sail across the seas, heading out to this infamous place in question, he didn’t really believe in such things as that, he was just going out there because he was curious about the area, he had never really been out that far but truth be told he had heard it had a beautiful cave hidden around the place, and he was determined to find that cave!
Eventually after what felt like ages of sailing, he finally made it to the place nicknamed ‘The Siren’s Sea’ He looked so relieved to have finally made it, sure, it did take a good bit to get to most places out on the seas but this felt like an eternity! The air around this infamous place where sailors had gone missing was thick, almost deathly thick… It did give Jackie a chill running up his spine but nonetheless, he looked off into the distance and noticed a cave, perhaps that was the one! Although, it was strange… That wasn’t very hidden… Either way he’d go check it out, he began sailing over to the cave in the distance and midway he suddenly got a feeling, a bad feeling, that someone was watching him… He looked around as he sailed, however he saw no one in particular, he also saw no sharks around either so he took a deep breath and chuckled “Them stories my friends told me must be messin’ with me… Yeah, that’s it…” He then continued onward and once he made it to the cave he looked around it, it wasn’t the one he thought it was but it was still pretty nonetheless! It seemed to go deeper than he thought it did as well, he squinted as he looked ahead, his boat could definitely fit through the cave so long as he was careful enough!
He eased his boat into the cavern and pressed forward, this was a big cave, bigger than most! Maybe this was the right cave! It looked almost endless as he sailed through it, this cavern was very beautiful even if Jackie didn’t find the hidden area, this would do him fine, as he continued sailing he decided to sing a tune to keep himself from getting bored, it was anything in particular really, just a little tune he had made up in his head, however unbeknownst to Jackie… A creature was swimming along the cavern, it’s head perking up as it heard the tune echo throughout it’s cavern “What a… Gorgeous melody…” It muttered to itself, and while the creature usually knew who sang each song, whose voice was whose, this voice in particular however, it was unfamiliar with… The creature was curious, it needed to find out who was singing this wonderful tune! It swam ahead, trying to locate the source of the noise, of course the creature was careful to keep its distance or stay hidden, because not all creatures, not even of its own kind would be friendly toward strangers… And or of course, it didn’t want to risk scaring the other off! Once the creature had managed to find the sound, it let out a soft gasp, this was no creature…! This was a… A damn sailor! Trespassing in it’s cavern no less!
However… The creature would not deny, the human had such a beautiful voice… To be a sailor no less… No matter, the creature did not take kindly to trespassers, especially not sailors… It slowly sank underneath the water, deep enough to where the sailor wouldn’t see it right off the bat and proceeded to follow the ship, meanwhile… Jackie continued sailing along, looking around as the cavern seemed to get more and more sparkly, he finally sailed into a big open area of the cavern, sparkles from one end to the other and there were even a few spots out of the water to stand on, some crystals strewn about on the ground, once he got in the middle of the area he stopped his boat and looked out, he was curious as he jumped off and into the water, swimming to one of the spots he could actually stand on in the cave, he pulled himself up onto the rocks and grabbed one of the crystals he found “Wow… Such a beautiful place…” The creature stayed under the water, listening intently to the sailor, well… At least the sailor could appreciate the beauty of his territory, he wouldn’t reveal himself just yet however… Meanwhile Jackie was picking up some crystals and bringing them back to his boat, he was going to take a few with him just because they were so pretty… And then he continued onward, man the cave was HUGE! Eventually, he came across an even larger opening with three tunnels ahead of him…
He had no idea which one to go through so he parked his boat in the middle and then sat down and sighed, beginning to hum another melody much to the creature’s delight below him… After a few moments it decided to join the sailor in singing a tune, this made the sailor’s eyes widen as he got up and slowly approached the side of his boat to look down into the water, he saw something… It was coming up! Annnnd… Whatever it was had splashed water in his face upon coming up to the surface, great, he had to take a moment to wipe the water away and once his vision cleared, his eyes widened at what he saw… There, resting on the side of his boat, was another man…  His green hair tied up in a man bun, his eyes as blue as ironically enough, the Ocean… That’s really the only thing he could see underneath his cat mask (y’all know what that looks like, sometimes a writer can get lazy and or tired with descriptions and that’s okay)
He looked like a normal man actually, a grin was splayed across his face, revealing needle sharp fangs which Jackie had to admit unnerved him a bit “Ah, hello there darling~! You are the one who sings, yes?” ...And he could talk like a normal human apparently too and that’s when Jackie saw the other’s tail swaying behind him, it was a mixture of various greens and blues and honestly… It looked so beautiful, and then it hit him… “A...Are you a Siren…?” He asked rather bluntly, to which the creature tutted at “Well how rude of you… Ignoring my question like that, however unlike y o u… I WILL answer a question… Why yes, yes I am dear~” Jackie also saw his hands, they were webbed and the other had claws “Woah… So my friends WEREN’T lying?!” He looked… Surprised but not scared, more so in awe than anything “Of course not! Why would they lie or make up such a thing? We aren’t just folklore, fairy tales, no no, none of that! We are quite real… Now, would you be so kind as to answer my question from earlier?” Jackie nodded “Oh yeah, sorry… I was the one who was singing, yeah! My name’s Jackie!” The Siren smiled at this “Ah, Jackie… What a lovely name~! My name is Marvin, it’s nice to meet you… Which is not something I say often about sailors you know…”
Jackie blinked in surprise before realizing “Oh uh yeah… Other sailors probably try to capture creatures like yourself, yeah?” Marvin only rolled his eyes, an irritated expression now on his face “Oh it’s S O much more than just mere capturing… Your kind has tortured mine for so long now… I suppose us sirens can fetch a high price but is that really any excuse for all the damage that has been dealt?” Jackie shook his head “Not at all… I uh… I really hope you don’t think I’m here to do that, I promise…! I was just passing through here, if you really need me to though I can just turn back” While he really didn’t want to turn back, if Marvin wanted him to he would do so, he wasn’t going to break any rules or trespass where he wasn’t wanted! And then he realized, his eyes widened as he looked back to the crystals “Oh shit… Uh, if these are yours by the way, I’ll also give 'em back, I don’t want any trouble here” Marvin clicked his tongue and smirked, resting his head in his hand, he wouldn’t deny, despite this man being a sailor he was MUCH more polite than all the others that had ever came through here… Nonetheless, a sailor is still a sailor... “Mm… You can keep those, they aren’t of any importance to me…” He paused for a moment.
Then Marvin got an idea “Actually, I would love it if you did one teensy little thing for me, darling…” Jackie tilted his head “Oh? What’d that be?” The Siren paused to clear his throat before staring straight into Jackie’s eyes, and Jackie swore that very stare had just pierced his soul “Well… I would l o v e it if you’d sing a little melody with me... After you sing with me, you can be on your way, I p r o m i s e…” Marvin was lying right through his teeth, the only place this sailor would be going was down below, but he wouldn’t deny, the thought of bringing Jackie down below and drowning him was triggering something within him, something he had never experienced before… No matter, this was still a sailor, sure enough if he ever tried to trust him, he’d be captured, tortured, or killed! He couldn’t risk this… He had to focus! Jackie could swear the other’s eyes were glowing now but he didn’t really know… His mind was starting to feel fuzzy, something was wrong here… “Upon one summer’s morning…” Marvin began, looking at Jackie expectantly who instantly followed up “I carefully did stray…” (dont worry im not going to type all the lyrics i s w e a r) Marvin seemed pleased with such a quick response.
“Down by the Walls of Wapping… Where I met a sailor gay…” Well… Jackie wouldn’t deny that last part at least “Conversing with a young lass…” Jackie continued, not wanting to keep Marvin waiting, absentmindedly getting closer to the edge of the boat and toward The Siren himself who seemed pleased with this so far “Who seemed to be in pain... Saying, Jackie, when you go, I fear you’ll ne’er return again…” And then simultaneously both Jackie and Marvin began to sing, Jackie coming closer when Marvin motioned for him “My heart is pierced by Cupid… I disdain all glittering gold… There is nothing can console me but My Jolly Sailor Bold…” As Jackie got closer Marvin began slowly dipping back down into the water, and Jackie knew something was wrong, despite not being able to stop singing along with Marvin and not being able to take his eyes off the other, deep down he knew this wasn’t right! This was what his friends were trying to warn him about wasn’t it! He desperately tried to pull himself out of whatever trance The Siren had put him under but it seemed to be no use as his body slowly began following Marvin under the water, he was beginning to panic internally now at this as he tried to hold his breath.
Now it was only Marvin continuing along the song as he gently placed a hand on Jackie’s cheek, he could sense the panic in the other and that seemed to strike a nerve in him, why was he feeling so odd?! This wasn’t anything new, he used his powers to gain control over the sailors, he dragged them down below to drown and then eat them! It wasn’t anything he hasn’t done before so why this particular sailor was he feeling… Sympathy for? He tried to continue downward but the farther he went the more Jackie began to panic, some of the panic had become external and Marvin saw the bubbles, shit… This just… Ugh! He quickly grabbed Jackie and headed back to the top, he carefully tossed Jackie back into the boat and then gave up his control, the other coughed and spluttered a little bit, grasping at his chest as he heaved in some breaths, his body was now beginning to tremble and he swore he felt tears prick at his eyes, meanwhile Marvin only sighed “I just can’t do it, not to you…” Jackie looked confused but he didn’t even dare look at the other as he spoke “I-I yo...you… What the f u c k…? Wha-What were you trying to do…?!” Marvin glanced toward the sailor, it pained him to see the other in such a panic, and because of him no less, he spoke not a word as he quickly dove back below, maybe at least now he wouldn’t have to worry about the sailor coming back.
Jackie gasped “Wa-Wait!” He called out and quickly made his way back to the side of the boat and looked below, he couldn’t see the siren anymore and he only sighed “What was that all about…!?” He muttered to himself, still feeling shaken he decided to turn back and call it a day, no way he was going to continue forward after that! He quickly managed to turn his boat back around and head out of the cave, not aware of the siren in the distance watching him leave… Marvin sighed “...Why couldn’t I do something so simple…? It’s in my n a t u r e…! I’ve done this for so long now…” He mumbled to himself, watching as the boat finally disappeared, he cursed himself mentally for letting the sailor go, he should have just continued, there was no way he had… ...No, he wasn’t even going to dare think that, he retreated back to the deeper parts of the cave so he could do some thinking… Meanwhile Jackie despite still being shaken up, he was still curious, he wanted answers ...And he knew what he’d have to do if he wanted to get them, but damn he wasn’t ready nor prepared for that ...Not yet anyways.
A few weeks had passed, Marvin was just swimming around in his cave, the waters were awfully quiet around the place and that sailor hadn’t come back yet, maybe Marvin really had frightened him off, it was for the best, no way things would end well if they got too close… It was a shame really, because that was the first sailor who had ever been nice to Marvin and showed him kindness… ...He had been thinking about what happened almost every day now and the more he thought about it the more he regretted it, the more he regretted scaring Jackie like that ...He still wouldn’t admit he was growing fond of the sailor, no way but he at least hoped that maybe… Just maybe he’d get his chance to apologize… He jumped upon hearing a boat in the distance, he glanced over and squinted, there was no way… No way that was him, he was just secretly hoping, after a few moments The Siren’s eyes widened as the boat got close enough for him to see, that… That WAS Jackie’s boat! Shit! He quickly dove down and began swimming to the furthest part of his cave, sure, he wanted to apologize but that sailor was probably angry with him, he could have brought weapons with him! Maybe that’s why Jackie was back, to seek revenge for what happened which wouldn’t surprise Marvin really.
And then sure enough, there was Jackie… He was coming upon that same cave, the one where he almost… Jackie shook that thought away, all he wanted was some answers… He did bring a harpoon just in case but he really didn’t want to use that, he didn’t want to hurt Marvin or any other creatures really, it was just for a last resort… As he pulled into the cave he took a deep breath and stopped the boat when he deemed it was far enough in, he then put on some of his equipment, sure, he had brought this last time… He could have followed Marvin then but he was just too scared at that moment, too shaky, but now… He finally felt he was ready to confront The Siren, if he’d even answer his questions, for all he knew Marvin could just easily attack him, and like it or not… Despite their previous encounter, Jackie did still have some interest in Marvin, he was still curious, once he got everything set up he finally took a dive below and began swimming further into the cave, he wondered if Marvin would even still be here, for all he knew that Siren could have moved locations by now, he didn’t necessarily know if they stayed in one place all the time like a home of sorts but he supposed if he got the chance maybe he’d find out today.
This cave was much prettier than he originally thought the deeper he went, he noticed that even if he wanted, there was no way his boat would fit through this spot, it was far too small, he also noticed there were MANY more crystals and shiny objects this far ahead, he didn’t dare touch anything though, he didn’t care about the treasure at this rate, that was the last thing on his mind, right now his only focus was trying to find Marvin! And eventually after a long while he managed to come to what was presumably the end of the cave, he stifled a gasp as he saw Marvin, laying down on one of the flat rocks and looking… Sad? He was messing around with some rocks, gently tossing them to the side… Jackie slowly swam forward, trying not to make much of a sound but Marvin only sighed “Why did you come back?” Jackie seemed startled at that question, even more so when Marvin turned around… The Siren’s eyes instantly shot over to the harpoon in Jackie’s hand and then his gaze shifted back to Jackie’s “Ah… Revenge, is that what you seek? Because, I won’t deny… Heh… I probably do deserve it BUT I still will NOT go down without a fight…” Marvin slowly rose from his spot and fully turned toward Jackie.
Jackie shook his head “I… I don’t want to fight… I didn’t come here for revenge, can we please just… Talk…?” To Marvin’s surprise Jackie slowly released the harpoon and he watched it float up to the surface “...I… You… You do understand how easy it would be for me to devour you right now, yes? And you just… Let that weapon go… The ONLY thing you had to defend yourself with? ...Darling, I admire your bravery but that was oh so stupid…” Jackie flinched as Marvin began swimming toward him “Like I said, I don’t want to fight you…! I just… I just want answers…” That made Marvin stop and raise a brow “...Go on…” Jackie paused for a moment to adjust some of his equipment before continuing “I just wanted to know… What were you planning to do with me?” Marvin sighed “...Like all sailors really, I had just planned on drowning you and then eating you… There, I’ve answered your question, you may leave my home now” Marvin turned away, heading back to lay on his rock but then froze instantly upon Jackie’s next question “...Why…?” The Siren turned back around, a confused expression on his face “...What do you mean ‘why’...?” Jackie instantly followed up and swam a bit closer “...Why didn’t you?” The Siren’s eyes widened a bit at that “...I… I just wasn’t feeling hungry, that was all, what is it to you anyways?”
Jackie shrugged “I just wanted to know, after all, I heard you say you just couldn’t do it, not to me… That doesn’t sound like you just weren’t hungry to me… You acted like I was, I don’t wanna say special, but I’m just another sailor, so why was it so hard for you to just… Kill me?” Marvin looked a little… Well, Jackie didn’t know how to describe his expression, he flinched a little as Marvin suddenly swam up to him “Good because trust me, you shouldn’t flatter yourself… You are not special to me, you are just another sailor like all the rest, I could end you right now if I so desired!” Marvin bellowed, he knew damn well however that what he just said was a complete lie, but he was determined not to let Jackie find that out, he went stiff upon hearing Jackie’s next words… “Wh...Wh-Wha...What did you just say…?” He wanted to be sure he heard that correctly, there was… No way, he surely misheard that! And then Jackie looked him dead in the eyes and spread his arms “...Then do it” Externally, Jackie was as calm as could be, he tried to keep himself calm internally because right now he was poking the bear or in this case The Siren… Marvin looked taken aback, he was shocked at what just came out of the other’s mouth.
“...Do you… Have some form of death wish? Is THAT the true reason that you came back…? Or are you just dumb…? Taunting a Siren like this, you have no IDEA what we are truly capable of do you?” Jackie shook his head “Not at all, honestly, I had no idea beings like you even existed originally, the things I’ve heard about your kind, people depict you as cold blooded killing machines essentially, but if I’m being honest… You don’t seem all that bad, you seem nice actually” Marvin blinked in surprise before he shook his head and got closer to Jackie “...Well I’m n o t… You’ve signed your own death warrant by coming back here, s a i l o r…” He hissed through his teeth, and Jackie wouldn’t deny seeing those razor sharp canines were not… Pleasant but he had to keep his confidence, but mentally he couldn’t help but curse himself for being THIS risky with a literal Siren!
Marvin raised a clawed hand, letting out a hiss as he glared at Jackie, who didn’t even break his gaze with the other, the more Marvin stared at the other the shakier his hand got, eventually he sighed and lowered it “...Just get out of here already, I have asked so many times yet you STILL persist and stay, don’t you realize that you have overstayed your welcome…?”
Jackie practically beamed and internally he was sighing in absolute relief, he grinned “I knew it…! So I was right!” Marvin wouldn’t and honestly really couldn’t deny that, that did get him to smile a bit, the sailor was… Awfully cute when he was happy or excited ...Ah hell… Marvin really was falling for a sailor wasn’t he…? Of all things, a Siren falling for a sailor… “You are such a strange individual, you know that Jackie? You come back to the very place you could have died, you confront the exact same Siren who could have caused said demise, and then you even go as far as to offer yourself to me like some sort of… Sacrifice… I must admit, that is very flattering…~” Marvin grinned “...I would hope however, that you know not to do that to just… ANY Siren of course…” Jackie nodded “Don’t worry, you’re the only one I uh, I guess I trust to do that? I didn’t believe you’d hurt me anyways” Marvin chuckled “How charming… I have to admit, you are one of the nicest sailors I have ever had the pleasure of meeting” Jackie’s face turned a slight shade of red at that “O-Oh… Really?” Marvin nodded “Yes actually~ I mean, most sailors would have come back for revenge, which I suppose would be fair... Yet you came back here just for answers and then did, well, t h a t… Honestly, it’s a nice change of pace to see a sailor as different as yourself”
Jackie nodded “Oh uh, yeah it… I don’t think I could hurt you, even if I wanted to ...W-Which I don’t, don’t g-get me wro-” Marvin held up a hand “Darling, relax, I understand what you meant” Jackie seemed relieved about that “Uh, y-yeah… So like, I… That’s really the only reason I came down here, was for answers… I can leave now if you want me to?” Marvin paused for a few moments before shrugged “Eh… It isn’t like I’ve got anything better to do today so, you may stay for a little while… Although are you s u r e it was ONLY you wanting answers… Or perhaps… Were you still curious about me?” Jackie’s face flushed a little red and that made Marvin chuckle “Aww darling~ Admit it, you ALSO wanted to see lil ol’ me as well didn’t you~?” Jackie shook his head “I… N-No… It wasn’t anything like that…! I just…” And then he trailed off, shit… How could he make a comeback here…? Meanwhile Marvin only had that shit eating grin on his face “Well? I’m waiting~” Jackie just shook his head and crossed his arms “...Just.. Sh-Shut up…” He pouted a little and that made Marvin laugh, that was a genuine laugh and that definitely caught Jackie’s attention as Marvin stared at him “Oh darling… You are quite adorable… That little pout on your face… Although, I can’t say I blame you, I mean… Who wouldn’t want to see such a magnificent creature as myself~?”
Jackie only rolled his eyes “...A narcissistic creature at that…” Marvin merely chuckled “Narcissism or just purely confident in myself~?” Jackie gave him a look but refrained from saying anything else, he watched as Marvin then swam around and looked him over “You know… I am curious, what is all that equipment you have on you? I am… Not familiar with a lot of things that humans have” Jackie smiled “Well uh, the thing on my back is my oxygen tank, it’s why I can be down here for so long actually!” He then cleared his throat before continuing on.
“Next the mask here protects my eyes so I can well, ya know, actually see down here… And the suit helps me keep warm because honestly, this cave isn’t too heated eheh… And the flippers, it helps me swim a bit faster honestly” Marvin nodded “I see… How interesting… Well, I suppose it’s fair… Given how humans differ from creatures like me…” Jackie nodded “Yeah, you’ve got gills to breathe under the water forever, you’ve even got claws and teeth to defend yourself with just like that! You’ve also got a beautiful tail and…” And then the sailor trailed off as he realized what he said “I mean… uh-” Marvin seemed to perk up at this “Oh? You think my tail is beautiful~?” Jackie sighed “Yeah I mean… The u-uh… The scales are… Very beautiful honestly…” Marvin hummed at that, he wouldn’t deny, that made a blush appear on HIS face which was impressive, no one had ever been able to make him blush before “Mm… Thank you dear… Of course someone such as yourself can appreciate true beauty when he sees it~” ...Okay, Jackie didn’t know how to really respond to that so he simply nodded and then something beeped, he pulled out a strange device and his eyes widened to which Marvin raised a brow at “Something the matter Jackie…?”
The sailor looked over at the other and shook his head “Sh...Shit… This oxygen tank won’t, uh,  last MUCH longer… I gotta get back to the surface…!” Marvin frowned “Ah… Such a shame but… Do what you must, after all, I don’t want you to drown… No no, you’re FAR too lovely for such a cruel fate as that…~” Now it was Jackie’s turn to blush “A-Ah… Uh… Th-Thank you…? I’ll come back and visit if you really want me too! I have plenty of oxygen tanks back at home…!” Marvin hummed for a second before nodding “Yes, I would like that very much…~” And then Jackie was waving Marvin off as he began swimming away, once the sailor was out of sight Marvin only sighed and smiled “...I cannot deny it… I am falling for him… Heh… How quaint…” And then Marvin looked down at his tail, he noticed a greenish blue scale was coming off and that gave him a brilliant idea… He gently took hold and pulled it off (don’t worry, it doesn’t hurt him, sometimes a scale or two will fall from him) He then swam down toward the bottom and gathered up some other materials and various crystals, he knew what he would make for that sailor… He quickly got to work and began crafting the item, meanwhile…
Jackie was swimming back up to the top, he wasn’t… TOO terribly worried, he felt like he had plenty of time to get back to the surface and he wouldn’t deny, he couldn’t get that siren off his mind… Now usually a siren can play many tricks on a human but he didn’t feel as though this was trickery, in fact, the things Marvin had said about him seemed so… Genuine… ...Maybe Jackie was just hoping for that though, he had definitely felt things about the siren, he just shook his head, he shouldn’t get his hopes up though, there’s no way Marvin ACTUALLY likes him back, why would a siren, especially one like Marvin love a simple sailor like him? ...And then suddenly, Jackie heard some gentle humming that startled him, he quickly spun around and saw three sirens coming out of the shadows “Ooh… Lookie here~! We’ve got another f i l t h y sailor who’s dived down here and decided to steal all the treasures for himself~!” Jackie’s eyes widened and he put his hands up in defense “N-Now hold on… I didn’t come for tre-” The siren only swam over and hissed right in Jackie’s face and before the sailor could even t r y to get away the other two sirens came over and held him by his arms, he tried desperately to struggle against them but to no avail, they were strong, far stronger than he was.
What he presumed to be their leader grinned maliciously and chuckled “Hmm… You know if you weren’t a sailor I’d actually consider you cute~ But no matter… You should be running out of oxygen soon~” The siren gave a look to the others and they tore his oxygen tank clear off, casting it to the side which made him panic internally, shit… He wasn’t prepared for that at all! He continued to struggle, trying desperately to fight at them and kick at them even if they were stronger than he was, he STILL wasn’t going down without a fight until… The leader came closer, gently cupping his face and locking eyes with him, they began singing a soft melody and slowly but surely Jackie stopped resisting, his eyes growing slightly cloudy as he listened and swayed his head from side to side “There we go… Good boy~ Just relax now and listen to our wonderful melody~” The other two sirens giggled and joined in with their leader, making sure Jackie’s struggling and fighting ceased, he could feel his body going slightly limp but he wasn’t passing out, he just… He was beginning not to feel the need to fight back anymore, deep down however was that terror that was slowly building, despite his mind feeling fuzzy, he still knew if he didn’t get back up to the surface soon he’d run out of oxygen.
He tried his hardest to gain back control of himself, to try and continue fighting but their song was just… So powerful, who knew a song could hold such power? Granted… There had to be something more to a siren’s power than just an ability to sing, either way… After another few moments had passed, he could definitely tell needed to come up for air and f a s t! He still couldn’t struggle as the leader opened their mouth, revealing rows of razor sharp teeth that were ready and eager to devour him, his eyes widened slightly as he heard them all hiss, this was it, this was going to be his demise wasn’t it…? He couldn’t even close his eyes to avoid looking at the maw that was staring him straight in the face… Before the sirens could all begin to feast, suddenly they were all blown away by what Jackie had thought was a strong current originally… However he quickly snapped out of his trance as they had stopped singing and he looked to the much larger siren in front of him now, it was Marvin! And he heard Marvin snarling at the other sirens “I will only give you all o n e warning and one warning only… Stay. The. FUCK… Away. From. Jackie… He’s m i n e and mine alone… I should kill the three of you right now for your pathetic insolence anyway!” He hollered and the three other sirens cowered, huddling together “Ohhh!” The leader got another glance at Jackie only to look back at Marvin after he put a hand out.
“This sailor is YOUR prey?! O… Oh, we are so terribly sorry oh great one…! We had no idea that he was your pr-” Marvin hissed “He is NOT prey… Let me make this very clear, the three of you are to warn ANY other sirens out there that this sailor is NOT to be harmed, if I find one singular h a i r harmed on him, I will not HESITATE to end anyone who d a r e s to touch something that belongs to me…” Marvin heard some bubbles from behind him and he quickly held up a hand, suddenly, a bubble was forming around Jackie’s entire body and he gasped in some fresh air. This was strange but nonetheless he wasn’t complaining in the slightest, he could breathe and he felt safe and secure in this,  he heard the leader of the sirens apologize profusely “This will NEVER happen again sire…! We cannot express how terribly sorry for this!” The other sirens nodded and Marvin only hissed, baring his fangs “Enough with your apologies… I have heard enough, get out of here and don’t e v e r come near him again…”
And that was enough to send the others swimming away for their lives and Marvin then sighed, calming himself down and turning back to Jackie who was still breathing heavily, mostly trying to calm himself down from everything that just happened “...Come now darling… Let’s get you back to the surface…” And just like that, Marvin was swimming upward, the bubble slowly and carefully following behind him and Jackie could tell he was on edge, the siren kept looking around and behind himself to make sure the ones that had swam away wasn’t trying to attack him from behind, he seemed relaxed again whenever he saw the only thing behind him was Jackie and eventually he made it up to the surface, the bubble popping just as soon as Jackie got onto his boat, the sailor could feel his body absolutely trembling… Marvin leaned against the side of his boat “Are you okay, Jackie? Did those disgusting wretches hurt you at all?” Jackie shook his head much to Marvin’s relief “I… If yo… If…” He was a bit too panicked to try and get out what he was saying… Marvin noticed this and beckoned him over which Jackie slowly followed, carefully… The siren took ahold of Jackie’s hand “Shh… It’s okay now… Just breathe my darling… They cannot and will not hurt you ever again… I promise, I will let no harm come to you…”
Jackie took some deep breaths and focused on Marvin’s face, looking into the siren’s eyes was so calming and relaxing… He trusted Marvin after all so far “Just breathe in and out with me dear…” After a while of doing the breathing exercises, Jackie seemed to calm down finally “O...Okay… I… I’m good now… Thank you, so much Marvin… I-If you hadn’t shown up wh-when you did th… Then I…” Marvin lifted a finger and shushed him “There’s no need to worry any more about them… They wouldn’t dare defy the likes of me… They along with any other sirens out there will never bother you again” Jackie nodded and then he realized he and Marvin were still holding hands, he didn’t pull away however, his face only turned slightly red but he was… Grateful and honestly glad to see Marvin right now “I was originally coming to give you something but then I sensed you were in trouble, I should have swam back with you in the first place, I knew there were other sirens that populated this area… I’m so sorry Jackie…” The sailor blinked and gently took his other hand and placed it on Marvin’s cheek “H-Hey… C’mon Marv… Don’t beat yourself up over that…! I mean… How could you have known that those three would even be here, sure, ya might have sensed me in danger but that doesn’t mean you can predict what or when danger is coming… I promise… I’m fine… Besides, you did STILL come and save me!”
Jackie grinned and pulled Marvin into a sudden hug, being very mindful not to pull the siren fully out of the water “I’m very thankful you got there when ya did…!” That made Marvin sigh and carefully he placed his arms over Jackie as well “...I know but still… I should have not been that careless, next time, I will be here waiting to escort you around, and I will accompany you through this area…” Jackie smiled “...I appreciate that… I really do…” And then they both pulled away and out of the hug and then Marvin noticed, he chuckled slightly “...Isn’t this a familiar sight?” Jackie raised a brow “What do you mean?” Marvin gestured to the positions they were now in “Just like when we first met out here, when I first… ...Well um… A-Anyways, speaking of, I want to apologize… For… That…” Jackie blinked in surprise but merely shrugged “It’s okay Marv… It’s crazy though, it feels like years since that day, then again a lot HAS happened…”
Marvin nodded “Yes, I suppose things have been… Hectic as of recently, I can assure you, things should calm down now ...I would hope anyways, for our sakes” Jackie nodded “Yeah for sure…” Jackie looked out toward the entrance of the cave and saw the sun setting in the distance “Wow… That’s… Really pretty…” Marvin looked to where Jackie was and smiled, for a while, they sat in silence as they watched the sun go down before the sailor then realized “Hey wait… You said you had something to give me, didn’t you?” Marvin’s eyes widened “Oh! I almost forgot!” Marvin snapped his fingers and suddenly Jackie felt something around his neck, he looked down and gasped at what he saw, he took it off to get a better look at the item… It was a necklace, the pendants were all various crystals of different sizes and colors and in the middle of them was a bluish green scale and if Jackie’s eyes could they would sparkle right now “...Yo...You made this for me…?” He looked over to Marvin who smiled and nodded “...Yes, Jackie… I have something I wish to tell you… I hope this is not too sudden… But, from the very first day we met, granted, I DID unfortunately try to eat you… I felt something deep down that I have never felt for anyone else ever, not my own kind and certainly not a sailor…”
Marvin cleared his throat and Jackie could tell he was nervous which seemed extremely out of character for someone as confident as Marvin “As much as I tried, as much as I so desperately wanted to deny it… You were and are still very special to me… I, ahah… You probably are going to think this is ridiculous given the kind of being I am but Jackie… The truth of the matter is…” And that’s when Marvin hesitated, he could feel his heart beating more rapidly, he was never the type to really be nervous but this time… It was different, much different, deep down he was terrified of being rejected but at the same time he wouldn’t necessarily blame Jackie for rejecting him given what he tried to do upon the first meeting but… Marvin also knew, it was now or never “...Jackie… I… I… lo… l-lo… I love you….” He finally stuttered out and waited for what he thought would be rejection and heartbreak, to his surprise though Jackie smiled so brightly and after quickly placing the necklace back around his neck he leaned in and gave Marvin a kiss on the lips, this took the siren off guard and his eyes went wide, slowly but surely however, his eyes had fluttered shut and he kissed back, the kiss lasted for as long as they could manage before Jackie had to pull back to take a breather “...I love you too Marvin…” And then that made the siren’s heart flutter, his tail gently swaying behind him, and then he gave Jackie a genuine smile.
This was pleasant… He would make sure no harm ever came to this sailor, even if he had to tear down entire ships or the ocean itself to make sure of that, he would never let anyone try to take him away either, this sailor was his and his alone! He didn’t quite register Jackie’s question until the sailor snapped his fingers and that made Marvin snap out of his thoughts “Hm? What is it dear?” Jackie looked curious “So… Those sirens back there, why did they call you sire?” And that made Marvin sigh, only giving a slight smile “Oh my love… That’s such a long story, and one for another time… For now, how about we enjoy some peace and quiet under the full moon tonight, hm?” Jackie sighed, he was curious but he wouldn’t push on it, he only smiled and gave a thumbs up “Okay Marv, okay… ...Love you…” Marvin hummed as he gently intertwined his hand with Jackie’s “...And I love you as well, my jolly little sailor~”
(If y’all really want, i’ll talk bout the sire ordeal just shoot me an ask if your curious about all that anyhoo- im actually proud of this one)
Man, I forgot to post 90% of my art here for the past while. I’m gonna do an art dump in this post under the cut. Enjoy the bonk emoji if you don’t click the read more, and man am I dumb and forgetful lmao.
Includes: OCs getting names, a Sonic impression, a D&D map, homosexual energies, a sheep floating in the astral sea, a birthday drawing I already posted, Hex Maniac Ender, D&D Characters, D&D Characters as Miis in Miitopia, Little Hater Axel, local Demon in the consciousness of my D&D character yelling at him, illegal plants, a necromancer being cute, an actual event that happened in a D&D game two days ago, and Mermay drawing.
That’s everything in here as a TL;DR, I guess. Enjoy your day!
I’m gonna try and sort of have them in chronological order, oldest first, but I may end up putting them in the wrong order. If I do... Whoops, I guess?
Tumblr media
[04/14/21] - This isn’t really new art, but I started to work on giving the four OCs of mine without a full name full names... I have not finished this bit, though. So Hunter and Akira have full names, and Warlock and Assassin only have temporary names. This may end up like Seven where I put in their names as a temporary name (7th OC I’d made at that time) and it just kind of... sticks. Lmao.
Tumblr media
[04/20/21] - Alone on a Friday Night? God, you’re pathetic. I didn’t colour this one because it was a half-attempt at a meme image I still like it, though, so I might end up colouring it. It’s gonna appear again whenever I do my “unfinished drawings art dump” at some point probably in... June? I know I said I’d post them last month but forget it, lmao, it’ll happen eventually.
Tumblr media
[04/20/21] - A D&D Map! This was to help me visualize the layout of my D&D character’s ship he used to be on. Also for my DM if they ever put us aboard the ship. The little fella in the corner is just there to vibe. This map is made of free to use assets from This Website, so while I’m gonna say DONT USE MY MAP WITHOUT PERMISSION, feel free to make your own!
Tumblr media
[04/26/21] - Lesbian Day of Visibility drawing of yours truly, the disapointment! That’s... really all I have to say about this, honestly. It was just for that one day and that was it, lmao. I mean, I accidentally lined it in dark pink, so.. .That’s different, I guess?
Tumblr media
[04/30/21] - Do Astral Seas dream of Ensorcled Sheep? Does the City know what Sheepleb is going to do? What crimes he may commit? Who knows! This was fan art of Critical Role ep. 134 if I remember correctly, right at the end when they jumped into the portal into the astral sea and Caleb was a sheep. Using my knowledge of the German language, I knew the word for “shit”, and had to use it.
Tumblr media
[05/07/21] - This was already posted, but it’s going in here to dilinuate that it was drawn at this point. Also, aside from playing Miitopia, this is all I have to show for myself until the 12th.
Tumblr media
[05/12/21] - Hex Maniac Ender challenges you to a Pokemon Battle! WIll you win against my team? My sis, who loves fairy types, pointed out to me that there’s a fairy girl and hex maniac duo, so I’d be the hex maniac. I spent... Over a week drawing this, because I basically had to redraw the Hex Maniac art from scratch in a higher quality size, and then draw myself over it. So... You can excuse the low-effort background for once. It was basically this, and then my birthday doodle from May 1st to May 12th, and then I took a break to draw up several D&D characters quickly for fullbody references.
Tumblr media
[05/12/21] - Remember this art I made several months ago? I finally added my other two completed characters! I have three more named but without character sheet D&D characters, so for now this is just Kara, Axel, Golden Shadow, Kau, Cecillia, and Miri. Kress, Tempest, and Melia will have to wait until I make character sheets for them to be posted, and... For when I probably make more D&D characters. I have at least 9 additional, incomplete character ideas floating around, so... I’m never gonna be done this art, huh?
Tumblr media
[05/12/21] - Speaking of D&D characters, did you know I’ve been making them as Miis in Miitopia? So here is their finished full body art next to their Miitopia self! Some of them look a little off (Golden Shadow, Cecillia) because of limitations of the editor and shading issues, some of them look a little off (Kau, Kress) because this is a human face canvas that I’m using to make a non-human face, and some of them (Melia, Axel) look REALLY GOOD. Common traits among my D&D characters include green eyes and tall. You wanna know why? Because I am tall and... despite having red eyes, I do have green eyes under the coloured contacts.
Tumblr media
[05/15/21] - More D&D stuff! This is based around my D&D group’s current Rime of the Frostmaiden campaign where our Goliath Fighter, Nioh, ends up getting a little bit of hate for being cocky, and our little (well over 6′) hater, Axel, is just a man full of irritation. These are the tallest two characters of the group at the moment. Someone send help. Nioh belongs to one of the other D&D players, Axel (and his stupid additude) belongs to me.
Tumblr media
[05/15/21] - This is what me playing D&D feels like. Me, the demon entity trapped inside the head of my D&D character, yelling at them to do things while the dice decide that they’re gonna get bopped a hundred times by a yeti and somehow still survive. This is also a reference to our first or second game where I just ran off like sixty feet to one side of the battle map to fight a Crag Cat and was just in Gay Baby Jail until like two turns later when I could run back to the others. I also drew him not in his winter gear even though this is a bit from when we were atop Kelvin’s Carin in an icy cave, so maybe that’s why he’s at low HP.
Tumblr media
[05/15/21] - Melia has good gardening tips, such as Use A Mars Mii Trap To Hide A Body Because They Are Endangered And It Is Illegal To Dig Them Up. I love her a lot, because she’s the youngest of four, all four sisters based around the different seasons. She’s based around Autumn, so she’s all orange and yellow and brown and is so cute. Also she’s Chaotic Neutral, as if she didn’t need to be mildly more threatening.
Tumblr media
[05/15/21] - Cecillia is my Tiefling gal who lived in a very northern town plagued by cold weather and snow, and Axel is my Pirate guy who spent most of his time further south on the high seas and warmer weather. So, naturally... I’ll use the guy more acclimatized to the hotter weather in the campaign where we spend 99% of it in the snow. She uses Tarot Cards as her spell focus, and I decided to sneak my other D&D characters onto her Tarot cards so naturally, Axel is The Hanged Man, given his backstory and personality. She’s a very cheerful and friendly Tiefling Necromancer of the Hexblade, so she’d for sure take care of those around her to ensure their success. Especially if they’re on her Tarot Cards, and their spirit comes to her aid when she asks for them.
Tumblr media
[05/16/21] - Content Warning; Ryma thinks too much into local stupid moron’s lack of knowing how to answer a question and thinks too much into the reputation of Pirates. Poor Axel, man doesn’t know how to socialize with people who aren’t pirates and is used to being hostile towards everyone, so when he’s asked a question that his answer to is “uhh... no?”, he panics and ends up making a mistake that leads him to think that Ryma can read his mind. Ryma belongs to another of the D&D players. I guess me drawing all those spicy Cow Costumed OCs earlier just brought me to drawing Axel being a bottom in this, huh?
Tumblr media
[05/16/21] - It’s Mermay, which means more OC drawings! Here’s Theo after drinking some potion that turned him into a mermaid, and Seven, tiredly, collecting his stupid boyfriend so that Lailah can fix the fact he’s turned into a mermaid. Mer!Theo is based around his sword’s colours of indigo-purple with red accents, which looks a little weird since Theo is the Blue one of the group, but... it looks cool, I guess. Seven’s just the same outfit as always, just no gloves this time.
--
And that’s it for the art dump! This was, frankly, MASSIVE. I’ll try and remember to upload both on Twitter and Tumblr at the same time, but... Ah... I have been drawing a fair bit. Just mostly sketches and linework that I haven’t finished and may not actually finish. If they’re not completed, I’ll dump them all into something at the end of the month or whatever. Maybe you’ll get the old sketch of the Axel face in panel 3 because in the sketch phase it was an Ahegao face, in the clean sketch it was a lip bite, and in the linework and final it’s just horny face. lmao.
Top ten things I have to remember for drawing: AXEL HAS A SCAR AND GREEN EYES. I remember his eye colour now, but if you look at his fullbody ref, he’s got brown eyes. And, naturally, I keep forgetting to put in his scar. He has more, but most of them are located in areas covered by his clothes. So if I ever draw him shirtless I guess I’ll have to place them somewhere.
Also maybe finish the reference sheets I have left to finish so I can post more of them, since I have two “Pets” completed (Roko and Mona’s nameless pet), but I have to do up Hunter, Warlock, Assassin, Akira, Myuut, and Stella. I’m betting when I do complete two more, it’ll be Hunter and Akira. Those two are the most fun to draw, at least.
Day 1 Anchor Pt 2
for the MerMay whump challenge, hosted by @amonthofwhump continuation of part 1 Fandom: Percy Jackson and the Olympians/Heroes of Olympus TW: Impalement
Annabeth nervously paced on the deck of the Argo 2. It had been two hours since Percy went down into the lake, and so far no one had heard anything. Piper was watching Katoptris, Leo was doing repairs on the ship, and Hazel, Frank and Jason were helping him. Annabeth knew that, yes, rationally speaking, this wasn’t the most dangerous thing Percy had ever done. But the feeling of unease that first started when Piper told them about her vision had just grown when Percy disappeared in the water, which also was decidedly not behaving like lake water, and excuse Annabeth for worrying about her boyfriend who seemed to attract trouble wherever he went.
She paused in her pacing for a moment, chewing on her lip anxiously. Annabeth glanced towards the water once, before storming towards the mast where Leo was perched hammering something.
The sudden boom that ripped through the air shook the ship and Annabeth nearly fell over. Leo yelped from above her and she heard startled cries from the other demigods. Annabeth whirled around, almost tripping over herself as she ran back to the railing.
The water, a once shining green, relatively undisturbed, had turned into a swirling mess. The water sloshed angrily against the cliffs, tearing chunks out of the stone and turning the water cloudy and dark. A trail of deep black blossomed out from the far side of the lake, trailing farther and farther out into the middle of the lake.
Another boom made Annabeth jump and cling to the railing of the ship.
“What the Hades is happening?” Leo’s indignant yelling drew next to the daughter of Athena, just as the other demigods appeared on deck.
“What’s going on?” Jason had his sword out, ready to fight. “Are we under attack?”
Annabeth shook her head, unable to tear her eyes away from the black stain spreading across the water. Piper gasped as she saw the lake.
“Oh my gods, is-? What’s -?”
“Percy’s in trouble,” Annabeth gasped out, feeling lightheaded. “Percy’s in trouble, we have to go get him,” she started moving towards the ladder that still hung from the side of the ship when a hand grabbed her around the wrist. She looked back to see Jason, a worried look on his face.
“Annabeth, you can’t go underwater. Frank and I will go,” the blonde looked back at Frank, who nodded. The two boys raced over toward the ledge of the ship. They leapt off, Frank gliding down as some kind of bird while Jason did his Superman thing. Annabeth watched as they hit the surface of the now black water.
Please be okay, Seaweed Brain.
-----------------------
Percy groaned. Oh gods, everything hurt. He cracked his eyes open to see complete blackness. He squinted, trying to make out anything that could explain why everything hurt so damn much. His eyes slowly adjusted and he was able to see jagged bits of rusted metal and rotten wood surrounding him. He groaned again as he remembered how he got in this position. The shipwreck. The screaming.
The ship must have folded around him when it hit the bottom for him to have survived. Percy glared around himself, trying to make out more of his surroundings. He moved to sit up when a searing pain in his leg made him cry out and sink back. The ship’s anchor had somehow gotten tangled up in the wreckage of the bow. It was laying over him, and by some miracle had not fallen flat and crushed him. However, one of the flukes was stabbed straight through his thigh. As soon as he noticed the pain, Percy was overwhelmed with the smell and taste of iron in the water and he gagged.
Eyes squeezed shut, Percy slowly sat up, grimacing as every movement pulled at the torn flesh. He still couldn’t see very well through the murky water. The demigod reached into his pocket and was overwhelmed with relief when his fingers curled around Riptide. He uncapped it and the sword sent a faint glow over his surroundings. The anchor was fairly small, and thank the gods for that, or else it might have sheared his leg off entirely. The metal was completely rusted apart, but despite Percy’s best efforts, it wouldn’t shift. He choked back a sob.
The others must have heard the ship cracking, right? Percy shuddered and looked up towards the surface. He cried out as the movement jostled his leg. Whimpering slightly, Percy clung to the anchor. He could still taste his blood in the water. Maybe it was the cold, but Percy felt sluggish. He shuddered, eyes trying to focus on the wreckage as black spots crept into his vision. His head bobbed in the current and he thought he heard a voice laughing. Percy vaguely noted that it looked like he had been wrong about there being no fish, since there was something yellow and purple coming towards him. He took a moment to wonder whether he should be worried about that, but gods he was… really tired. If the fish wanted to eat him it would just have to wake him up later.
-----------------------
Jason waved his sword through the water in a wide arc, trying to orient himself in the murk. Frank had transformed into a giant goldfish when they entered the water, which at the time did not seem particularly useful, but Jason realized now was pretty smart, considering his scales had a pale glow to them. Frank swam through the water a little ways away from Jason, avoiding the miniature tornado the son of Jupiter had formed around himself.
The two had landed about where the black streak started out from and they had found a torn up lakebed with a good amount of debris from what looked to be a sailing ship. The only problem was, there was no ship. Jason felt the unease rising in him as the two followed the trail of destruction along the bottom of the lake. Whatever had made it was big, and Jason did not want to think about what that could mean.
Frank suddenly came to a stop in front of him. The goldfish made an odd burbling noise before heading straight down. Jason swallowed and followed him. He gasped when the wreckage of a ship emerged from the darkness. It was crushed to pieces, spread across a large expanse of the lakebed.
Well, guess we know what made that boom.
The pair approached the ship. Frank morphed into a shark to fit better, leaving Jason to hold his sword out in front of him as a rudimentary light.
“Come on Jackson, you better be down here…” the blonde muttered under his breath. As they swam closer towards the front of the ship, Jason noticed a faint glow. He motioned to Frank, who nodded as best he could. Jason pulled his sword back and crept out from behind a splintered segment of wall.
Percy was clinging to an anchor like his life depended on it, Riptide unsheathed and lying next to him in the wreckage. Jason sighed with relief and moved towards the other demigod. Percy lifted his head and Jason noticed the glazed over look in his eyes a moment before the son of the sea god shivered and his eyes rolled back in his head.
Jason dove forward, registering the anchor embedded in Percy’s leg and the red tint to the water around them as Frank came into view. Jason nodded towards the anchor and together, he and Frank managed to drag it out of and off of Percy.
The blonde grabbed Percy under the shoulders. As the air pocket moved around him, the teen groaned. Jason and Frank powered through the water, breaking through the surface of the lake two hundred meters or so from where the Argo 2 was hovering. Frank morphed back into a bird while Jason adjusted his grip on Percy, flying up towards the ship.
The others had gathered on the deck and the moment they landed Annabeth pulled Percy away from the blonde.
“What happened?” Hazel watched, eyes wide, as Annabeth started cleaning the wound with nectar while Piper ran below deck to get bandages.
“There was a shipwreck down there, and he got pinned under the anchor somehow,” Jason explained.
“He’s lost some blood, but you’ll be fine, Seaweed Brain,” Annabeth muttered, almost to herself, as she finished cleaning the wound. Piper reappeared and thrust a roll of bandages at Annabeth, who promptly wrapped them around the hole in Percy’s leg. The son of Poseidon stirred, groaning slightly as his eyes blinked open. They found their way over to Annabeth and he grinned at her.
“Told you… it’d be fine.”
She choked back a sob, half relief and half exasperation and threw her arms around his neck. She released him after a moment and he blearily looked around at the demigods standing around him, before finally settling on Piper.
“Piper… I think your dagger is trying to kill us…” he slurred as the others laughed around him.
title: Behind the Glass characters: Haizaki Ryouhei, Mizukamiya Seiryuu pairings: haimizu summary: Following an escapee penguin leads to a meeting he'd never forget. a/n: written for haimizu week (free day prompt)! since its mermay I wanted something with a mermaid au! it’s not the original mermaid au I had in mind for them but I decided to try and write one that involves an aquarium setting @iefiveshipsweek
"Come on, you have to stay in here." Haizaki mutters to the young emperor penguin that's keeping right beside him, as if she were intent to leave the habitat with the human. The little one looks up to him, chirping in glee that she might be able to waddle beyond those doors.
He clicks his tongue and bends down. Gently, his hands are placed against the penguin's back and he pushes her as far away from him as possible. It's the most he could to do ensure that she won't escape, especially since he had already given up all his fish here earlier.
With his hands still on her, eyes glance around to try and spot the other young penguins. There were a handful who seemed to enjoy his presence, but they were busy waddling and chirping on the ice. For now, it was just one he had to deal with.
Haizaki nudges her a little further. The moment his hands are off the penguin, he makes his escape. He's careful not to run on the ice, even with the boots needed to wear when coming into this exhibit, but he's certain that his longer strides can outrun a little, waddling penguin.
Once out of the penguin habitat, he turns to shut the door properly. It's quiet and he's examining the door and the bits of ice that trailed out underneath it. There's not a single fluffy bird in sight. A breath of relief is let out when he's certain that no penguins have escaped.
The teen turns to his backpack left by the door. He lets his back lean against the wall before sliding down to sit beside it. Digging through his bag, he pulls out a notebook filled with papers. Flipping through it, he finds a blank worksheet to fill out. He begins jotting down quick notes; he'd fill the rest out properly when he was home.
This internship felt more like extra schoolwork to him at times. Sure, being able to study animals up close and learn about them was worth it, but all the boring paperwork, writing scholarly paragraphs, and essays due at the end of each month was something he could live without. It didn't help that he wasn't getting paid either, just a (maybe) assured job by the time he was done with school.
He groaned to the thought, slamming his notebook shut. He takes his time thinking about how he's going to get home, what train he's going to have to catch. It's annoying to figure out especially at this hour. But, whatever. It wasn't anything new for him.
Cheep! Cheep!
The moment he hears those echoing chirps, he freezes. He wants to believe that he imagined those chirps. He's been in that habitat most of the day, so it's not unnatural to think he's hearing those restless birds even now.
Cheep! Cheep!
Now he knows he isn't simply hearing things.
His head turns, eyes trying to spot the source of sound in the dimly lit halls of the aquarium. There's a waddling ball of gray fluff heading down the corridor, chirping without a care in the world as she explores this unusual world.
"Hey!" He barks at the penguin.
The penguin's head turns and chirps, tail wagging behind as she was finally noticed. But, she doesn't come towards the human. Instead, she keeps trudging on.
As he begins to stuff his belongings into his backpack, eyes fly to the door, trying to examine it and find out how the hell a baby penguin managed to break free. He'll leave that matter for another day- tomorrow. For now he has to worry about chasing- walking after the silly creature.
Haizaki is thankful that it's past closing time. The only others in the building would be employees and he doubts that they're all hanging around this exhibit. The last thing he needs is to be teased by one of them (namely that damned Sasotsuka) for having a baby penguin get the best of him.
Slinging the backpack over one arm, he starts after the chirping ball of fluff. She can't get too far, thankfully, but she does grow curious about a door left ajar, one that read as DO NOT ENTER.
"Candice," he hisses the penguin's name, hoping to have her stop. Yet, she doesn't.
The penguin continues to waddle past the door without a care for the sign. Normally, Haizaki would have been a little more hesitant about going past one of these doors. If caught, he'd be booted out of here for sure. He'll be quick, he argues. Just go in, get her, and leave.
And that's what he does. A hand pushes the door open and he immediately scoops the little penguin into his arms.
"Time for you to go back home, troublemaker." He tries to be angry with her, but even his glare isn't as harsh as it normally would be. When she chirps in his arms, it makes it increasingly more difficult to tell himself that she won't get any treats from him tomorrow.
Before he can follow through on his plan, something catches his eyes- the reflection of water against the ground. He looks up, finding an underwater themed exhibit behind glass. Aside from the rock formations, seaweed, and other usual decoration set inside these, it lacked marine life within it. Which, he found, a bit odd.
Thinking of the layout of the aquarium, he tried to imagine what would be here. There wasn't anything on the maps he had memorized that told him what would be here. And he couldn't exactly deduct what type of marine life fit into these waters. His expertise lied in penguins and sharks. This tank fit neither.
"Whatever."
This wasn't his problem. It was probably a new exhibit opening soon. Not one he would worry about.
So, he turns, mind set on returning Candice home…until a shadow swims by- fast. Unable to make out what it was, his head turns, expecting to see something in the tank.
It's still empty.
Curiosity nags at him to get a closer look. Or perhaps it's Candice waving a flipper out towards the tank. Either way, he finds himself stepping closer and closer, until he's only a few inches away from the glass.
His gaze drifts across the water, trying to search out some type of fish. There isn't any around. Instead, his eyes catch something unexpected. A head- a human head sticking out behind one of the rock formations.
'Probably just someone cleaning the tank or whatever.'
He was stupid for thinking that there'd be fish in here. It's just for cleaning. But, something isn't right. The more he looks at the person, he realizes that he's not wearing any gear.
He's not wearing anything at all.
The one hiding had swam out, revealing his form as he made his way towards the awestruck human. He had the upper body of a male human, and the lower half of a fish.
A mermaid- merman.
And this merman was absolutely stunning. He was a pale beauty with blue hair and matching eyes. His skin was clear aside from the patches of dark blue-purple scales decorated around his body and a scar on his right side. His tail was long, a darker shade of blue, with elegant and flowing fins. Even he had to admit that this creature- person, was beautiful.
The merman had come up to the opposite side of the glass, floating in the water with ease. Hands reach out to press against it, a smile rests on his face. The penguin in the human's hand catches his attention. He waves to the smaller creature.
"Hello there."
"You can speak?!"
The voice was a bit muffled by the dividing glass, but was clear enough so that he could make out what he was saying. At least, he assumed he was if this was all real. A merman. Talking. He could hardly believe it.
"I can," the merman speaks, after laughing softly to his outburst. "Who are you? You're not one of the usuals that stop by here." He pauses, attention grabbed by Candice for a moment. "You're her friend?"
"I-"
He wasn't sure how to answer this. Any of this. He had so many questions running through his head, but only one comes out-
"You speak penguin too?"
"I suppose so? I understand most creatures. I don't see why it's so surprising."
Because that's the norm for you, he thinks. He lets out an aggravated sigh. He never thought that today he'd be speaking with a merman who could talk to his penguin too.
"Is something the matter…?" The creature asks, head tilting with a worried look.
Haizaki shakes his head. It feels…weird to have him looking so concerned over nothing.
"No, I'm fine."
That's a lie. But he's not about to spill out how he thinks he's losing his sanity the longer he stays here. Candice need to get home and so did he. Now he thinks he needs to just crash the moment he returns to his place.
"Excuse me?" He speaks, again. Gaining his attention, again. "May I have your name?" He asks, hopeful.
"Ryohei."
"Ryohei?" He parrots, sounding out this name. That smile of his returns. "My name is Seiryuu."
"I didn't ask for your name…" The human mumbles.
It seemed as if the other had heard it, causing a frown to cross his face. Now he feels guilty for letting that slip out.
"It's fine," he says quickly in hopes of wiping that frown off his face. "Seiryuu…is a nice name."
"Thank you!" The smile returns with a little hum. "Ryohei is an interesting one. I've never heard it before."
"Yeah, thanks?" He shrugs.
Haizaki feels a little peck at his fingers. He looks down, nearly forgetting that he was holding the penguin in his arms for this long. She brings him back to the reality that he shouldn't be here for too long.
"I have to…get going." He adjusts the back over his shoulder, tries to take a step back to leave.
"Will you come back?" Seiryuu asks, pushing himself closer to the glass. "I would like to see you again."
"Uhh…" He's hesitant on his answer. The only thing he can do is stare. Their eyes meet and he can see the pleading hope in his eyes, pleading for a yes. It leaves him with a weird feeling in his chest. "Maybe. I'll try to."
Even if his answer wasn't fully positive, it makes Seiryuu smile brightly, even his tail sways side to side. He thinks that, if he were human, the other might have gone in for a hug.
"See you soon then, Ryohei!"
"Yeah, you to, Seiryuu."
As he turns to leave, he notices that the other remains in place. His shadow unmoving as he watches the human leave this room. When he shuts the door behind him, the world feels different now. His thoughts are elsewhere, thinking about what- who he had just met.
"He…shouldn't be in there…" Words come out of his mouth before he's even aware of it. A beautiful creature like that cooped up in a glass tank that was made for display. While he's not the most informed about supernatural creatures, even he knows something about merfolk. They're meant to be in the ocean, not in here.
He sighs and shakes his head. This isn't his problem. He has to focus on his internship. Focus on the penguins he'd been assigned to care for. Focus on himself and what he needs.
And yet, he couldn't get the image of that merman out of his mind.
Certainly! Here’s a continuation of that Thorki merfolk AU I hope to have finished in time for Mermay this year.
Tumblr media
When Loki came to a few hours later, he found himself lying on a bed in a dim, claustrophobic cabin. His hand had been treated with a poultice and bandaged, but that was the extent of the care he’d been given. He tried to move his fingers and succeeded, but at a painful price.
Thor had known, of course, that this was his magic-dominant hand. Some sea sorcerers preferred their tentacles—or their tails or other limbs—to be the conveyors of their powers, while some used objects, like a staff or a wand. Loki had chosen his left hand to be the instrument through which he cast his magic, and until it fully healed, there would be no further enchanting, cursing, or supernatural shenanigans from him.
That, combined with the fact that his tail had been secured to the bed with ropes, further exemplified just how grave his situation was. Not that he believed Thor would kill or mutilate him, but Loki was very conscious of the eighteen years’ worth of pranks, mischief, and antagonizing the human had endured at his hands, and the thought that he might finally be forced to account for all his devious deeds thoroughly worried him.
He sat up and tried to pick at the heavy knots binding his tail, but was interrupted by the sound of footsteps outside the door. He threw himself back down and pretended to be asleep. A few seconds later Thor entered the room carrying a wooden mug in his hand, and shut the door behind him. Loki watched him through the fuzz of his eyelashes as he set the mug down on the little table beside the bed.
“I know you’re awake, Loki. You can stop pretending.”
Loki opened one eye. “How could you tell?”
“Because I’ve seen you sleep,” Thor said, taking a seat on a nearby stool. “Your jaw hangs loose and you get a little stream of spit flowing from the corner of your mouth. Sometimes it bubbles. It’s quite disgusting, really.”
Loki sat up with a scowl and reached over to claim the offered mug. He sipped its steaming contents and tried to keep his expression as neutral as possible. It proved difficult for this was red tea, his very favorite human beverage, and it was kept aboard the Mjolnir for the sole purpose of his private consumption. Thor had prepared it exactly the way he liked it too, with honey and a splash of milk.
“Hm,” he murmured, smirking. “Too bad those disgusting sleeping habits of mine never put you off.”
Thor smiled. “Indeed. Sometimes I wonder how different my life would be if you hadn’t stolen my heart at the tender age of seventeen.”
“Thor, you were never tender, especially at seventeen. Let’s be honest.”
“You’re never honest.”
“That’s honestly the worst thing you’ve ever said about me.”
“It’s the truth.”
“Well, the truth hurts. You should really be more gentle to me. You know how fragile I am.” He sipped his tea after an arrogant arch of his eyebrow.
“Oh, Loki, Loki.” Thor sighed and rubbed his tired face. “How long are we going to keep this up? For the rest of our lives?”
“What, you don’t find this fun anymore?” Loki sourly held up his bandaged hand. “I certainly do.”
Thor grimaced, sheepish. “I am sorry for that, truly. But I could think of no other way to arrange a serious conversation between the two of us, especially without the influence of your sorcery.”
“Well, I’d say you’ve succeeded in getting your wish.” Loki set the cup aside and reclined once more against the pillows. “So what do you want to talk about, Thor? Your father? The weather? Maybe you’d like to tell me why I’m tied to your bed? Yes, let’s start there. I’m rather curious myself.”
“Look”—Thor lifted his finger and straightened his back—“I learned my lesson the last time you got combative in close quarters. That tail of yours—which I admire, by the way, it gets lovelier every year—is the destroyer of worlds and I don’t want it wrecking my cabin.”
“Is that the only reason?” Loki grinned nastily. “Here I am, wounded and powerless, tied to the bed of a man who hasn’t had sex in two and a half years, and you would have me believe your intentions are innocent? Forgive me if I seem just a little incredulous.”
“You have nothing to worry about. I am no longer interested in you.”
“Is that so?”
“It is.” Thor shook his head and sighed. “I’ve spent enough years of my life pursuing you, Loki. I waited for you, made excuses for you, I clung to the hope that your heart might be changed and someday you would return all the kindness and affection I’ve shown you. But I see now that it is a vain hope. You will never change. You’re going to be the same self-centered, mischievous rogue you’ve always been. As for me, well, I am a king now. I’ve a kingdom to rule. My days of living on the seas are over. That’s what I wanted to talk to you about. I’m resigning my position as captain of the Mjolnir and returning to land. Permanently.”
Loki sat up, his eyes wide and worried. “Returning to land? But you—” He stopped and cleared his throat, collecting himself. “I mean, that’s perfectly alright, but what about my supplies? Who’s going to get them for me now?”
“I don’t know.” Thor shrugged indifferently. “You’ll find someone, though. You were always very adaptable.”
Loki sucked his lower lip between his teeth and held it there, trying to calm his frantic thoughts.
For close to two decades Thor had been supplying him with various land-sourced ingredients he needed for his potions. One might say that was how their relationship began—a business venture between two young men of two different worlds, trading pearls for feathers, shells for wood ash, and, on one occasion, a kiss for a pair of beautiful jade green moths. Thor had even once managed to haggle Loki out of a lock of his hair for the price of a wolf’s tooth; Thor had braided the lock into his own tresses, inky black woven between strands of golden brown, which he still wore to this day.
Loki didn’t realize he’d been staring at the little braid until Thor noticed, then he tore his eyes away with a haughty sniff. “Yes. Well. I’d been thinking it’s about time I start seeing other humans, anyway. This is the perfect impetus.”
“Exactly. It’s the best for both of us.”
“Oh, no doubt. We’ve been in this stagnant phase for quite a while now.”
“Quite.”
“And my potions are getting a little dull. I think a change in latitude and some new ingredients will help invigorate them.”
“You could go to the tropics,” said Thor helpfully. “The reefs down there are bursting with all sorts of amazing things. You’d make a killing.”
“That’s a wonderful suggestion, Thor. I might just do that.”
“Promise you’ll think of me when you’re down there in those lovely warm climes?” Thor heaved a wistful sigh. “I must remain here in the gray, bleak north, sitting on a throne day in and day out, commanding my legions of servants, with nothing to do during the dark winter months but count my vast, growing wealth and make love to beautiful women.”
Loki narrowed his eyes and hoped he didn’t look as jealous as he felt. “Sounds dreadfully boring. Alas, these things must be done.”
“Alas.” Thor gave Loki a winsome smile. “I’m so glad we agree on this. It’s a weight off my shoulders.”
“Oh, you have no idea how relieved I am,” Loki insisted. “I was afraid your infatuation with me would never end, but I see now how wrong I was. You will be a marvellous king, Thor. I wish you the very best.”
“Thank you. I pray you find the power and affluence and approval you so desperately seek. I’m sure you will, you’re very clever.”
Loki smiled with clenched teeth. “Why, thank you. That’s a kind thing to say.”
“You’re very welcome. More tea?”
{Yuri on Ice Mermaid!Au - MerMay Submission} Make a little sea
DO NOT REPOST WITHOUT MY PERMISSION, THIS IS ALSO POSTED ON MY AO3 AND FANFICTION.NET - LINKS IN MY PROFILE (LADYKG.TUMBLR.COM)
'Ello lovely readers,
I know it's a bit late but this is my submission for MerMay, but really I've just been looking for an excuse to write and post a YOI Mermaid!AU because why not?
Anyway, onto the story, I hope you all enjoy and please review!
The first time his parents take him ice skating he marvels at the fact he doesn’t grow fins. He is so shocked that the water - frozen as it is - doesn’t do anything that he doesn’t care to pay attention to the girl he was about to collide with. They both go down hard, sprawling across the ice and setting his glasses askew - his grandma had insisted upon getting them, saying that his vision will always be worse outside the water.
She is loud and hyper - the first thing he notices without being able to properly see - to the point he can’t keep up with her babbling as she hefts herself off the ice like their fall was nothing.
 “-I haven’t seen you here before,” her voice goes on, cheerful even as Yuuri feels the bruises form on himself, more than certain that she has gained some purple blotches as well. “What’s your name? I’m Yuuko!”
 “Yuuri,” his voice came small and less over-taking than hers. The second thing he notices is her beaming, teeth-filled, eye-closing smile.
A year older and two more than Yuuri on the ice gives her a grace he wishes his stubby limbs could have outside the water. She becomes his friend - declares it herself as she helps him rebalance on wobbly blades.
It becomes a day of many firsts.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Two years later his grandmother dies, taken by the foaming waves.
She was the only one in his family that shared his ‘gift’. The one that taught him how to swim, and all the rules about being part merperson. Like how often to shift, or that just because you can eat fish easier when you transform doesn’t mean you should. Like the fact that other kids don’t grow fins when submerged, that Yuuri was different and he shouldn’t despair.
She was the only one who didn’t give him worrying looks when, at the age of three, his tail replaced his legs during bath time. She had smiled, a knowing twinkle in her eye that was filled with equal parts glee.
It takes a month for his parents to coax him back into the water. Not because he fears he too will be swallowed whole by its gaping vastness, but because it is not the same alone. He hates swimming alone.
It takes Yuuko another week to convince him to skate again. (A week and several long rants about how they will never be able to impress Viktor if they don’t practice).
  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Viktor Nikiforov.
Yuuri fills his room with posters of the man, a star brighter than any he has ever seen. Something to connect with Yuuko over, turns drastically into Yuuri’s own fantasy of sharing the ice with Viktor one day. Of sharing with this beautiful man the closest he can get to water without shifting - something precious.
One day, he tells his parents, one day he’s going to meet Viktor and give him a bouquet of blue roses.
His parents smile those indulgent smiles that always trick kids into believing they trust in the achievement of their wishes. They say, “Of course, Yuuri.”
And when he begs them for a poodle, “Viktor has a poodle!” They indulge him. Allow their child with dreams too big for his fins and stars in his eyes to reach for heights that no one thinks he can grasp. (Or perhaps the ‘no one’ is just Yuuri). Watch as he practices relentlessly each day, feet bleeding, body bruised and legs aching from lack of shift. Look on, and smile, and support, and tell Yuuri that they believe he can achieve whatever he puts his mind to. That everyone gets stage fright. That his anxiety will wane with more time in front of a crowd.
Those smiles change when he starts to win competitions - pride, now, and a sense of not-understanding. They support him. Celebrate each victory and do not question as he brings home more and more posters of a silver-haired skater with ocean blue eyes.
  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When Yuuko finds out the truth she is angrier than his parents.
It was been an accident, really. Even if he does, at times, contemplate telling her everything he knows that he shouldn’t. He is different, other people don’t grow fins when they enter water, and although he shouldn’t despair that doesn’t mean he plans to tell anyone of this difference either. Both because he heeds his grandmother’s old warnings and because he is scared of what they might do. What they might say. How they might react. (That Yuuko won’t want to be friends anymore).
She did. Want to be friend that is. Despite Yuuri’s fears and tear streaked face as he rushes home after finally, finally, drying off enough to regain his legs. Despite the fact that he cries to his parents, eleven years old, that he just lost his best friend all because of this stupid ‘gift’. Despite the fact that he skips practice for three days.
Despite the fact that she feels like she has been betrayed.
“How could you not tell me?” Yuuko huffs, face set in a pout, arms propped on her hips.
Yuuri blinks up at her, Vicchan’s fur clutched in his fist for support as his still-best-friend stands outside his house and rants about how cool it was to have a mermaid - “or would it be merman, merboy?” - as a best friend. That Yuuri will have to bring her all the prettiest shells and that he will have to swim them to Russia to meet Viktor. And can she see his tail again?
  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Minako doesn’t find out so much as his parents decide to tell her - twelve years old and only a few months since ‘The Yuuko Incident’ as the adults call it. They don’t need someone else discovering it by accident.
What if someone besides Minami sees?
What if Yuuri starts to be careless?
What if the authorities get involved?
What if-
Yuuri sits next to his sister. His normal, finless, shiftless sister who can go swimming with everyone else. Who doesn’t have to worry about gills and glasses and legs that ache if he doesn’t go in the water for too long.
Sits in the dining area of their home and listens to his parents as they talk in hushed voices from the kitchen. They discuss his future and how worried they are, how someone might ‘find out’ and that he could be taken away. That it is dangerous for him to live so close to the ocean. That Hatetsu is a small town and someone was bound to notice.
He hates his ‘gift’ sometimes.
  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He leaves his little town by the ocean for America, college, and training under a new coach. It terrifies him. He knows no one, the area is foreign to him in a way he hasn’t experienced when living in a small town. Even when they traveled for competitions it had always been with Yuuko or Minako by his side. Neither of them are with him now, and stepping off the plane into this new world sets his anxiety to a level he can barely handle. But he is determined, because it had taken a year of coaxing to convince his parents it is the right move.
There are no oceans close enough to Detroit that he parents have need to worry - one of the main selling points for his transition here. But the great lakes surround him and even if they are colder than what he is used to it affords him everything he needs in life.
Water.
Ice.
Skates.
And the next push to become a good enough skater to meet Viktor.
  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Meeting Phichit changes more than just his skating schedule or rooming situation. His fellow skater helps push Yuuri to try more daring jumps, to dare to dream even bigger - to aim for the stars when he has never been able to reach much higher than the sea.
Their friendship is, in Yuuri’s opinion, one for the books. They enable each other and indulge in more jokes than Celestino permits during practices but they have fun. They excel.
They become so close that Yuuri can hardly imagine a time when Phichit wasn’t in his life - doesn’t want to because it seems terribly lonely, even with Yuuko and Takeshi and Vicchan. They have become so inseparable that Yuuri can’t even pinpoint the time when he found out, just that he did and that from then on out Phichit had joined him in skipping a class every two weeks to rent a boat and take it out onto the lake.
Phichit is also the first person beside Yuuko that Yuuri decides to tell about his dream of skating on the same ice as Viktor. Yuuri doesn’t know what he is expecting, but it isn’t the enthusiastic cheer and suddenly serious consideration of clocking more hours at the rink behind Celestino’s back.
It takes a weight off of his chest.
  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Five years tick by faster than he wants.  The anxiety never goes away, the panic right before getting onto the ice still fresh every single time.
Five years and he has finally made it to the GPF.
Five years and suddenly he is sitting in a stall with tear-streaked cheeks, twenty-four years old, and crying to his parents about how sorry he is to have disappointed them. To have messed up. To have missed Vicchan’s death.
To have failed so miserably in front of Viktor. To know and finally be forced to realize that his dreams really are too big for him and that fish are better left to swimming that trying to jump for the stars.
The sudden and forceful smashing of his stall door brings him up short, and with no small amount of trepidation - what if it’s Viktor, what if he has come to tell Yuuri how disappointed he is? - he slides out of the stall.
“Sorry,” he is able to force out, voice small as he tries to seem less panicked than he actually is facing off Yuri Plisetsky. They call him the “Russian Punk” and with his already frayed mentality Yuuri is less than inclined to be running into him.
“Oi,” the younger boy starts out with, and with the look in his eyes Yuuri irrationally thinks that he has been discovered. That his parents will face not only disappointment in competition but another case of ‘The Yuuko Incident’. “I’m competing in the senior division next year,” is what comes instead, “we don’t need two Yuri’s in the same bracket.”
Oh, is all that comes to mind, because he had been thinking of-
“Incompetents like you should just retire already.” And suddenly the punk is right in his face screaming an insult and walking away faster than Yuuri can really process. Cutting short his thoughts and making him feel more and more justified in his decision. There are plenty of talented skaters, what use is having an older washed out dreamer on the rink?
Even with the encouragements of a reporter he can’t see reason to continue.
Especially when Viktor asks if he wants a commemorative photo. Especially as his heart sinks so low that he can’t even feel if it’s beating anymore.
Plisetsky was right. He really is a moron.
An idiot to think that Viktor would recognize him.
  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He waits out the rest of his semester, attending class and focusing on his grades. Attending practices to create a new routine becomes an afterthought - what use is it to train if he doesn’t intend to compete? He takes that time to study, and those weekends normally spent with Phichit in the rink see him in the lakes.
He gains weight. It has always been easy for him to do - when he was younger he had chalked it up to the waters being cold and the fat acting as a layer of insulation. But thin or not the chill has never bothered him and his mother suffers from a similar dilemma.
By the time he returns home he is more than ready to sink back into the anonymity of a small town and spend a week doing nothing but swimming. Perhaps he’ll even visit his grandmother’s grave.
He does not expect Minako-sensei to be there, waiting for him at the train station - nor does he expect her to be so excited in the face of his failure. His mother’s good mood at his arrival doesn’t do anything to lift his spirits - she is happy for his return but cannot seem to understand what it has cost him. (He can’t begrudge either of them, though).
  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Seeing Yuuko again after five years settles a strange weight in his chest, he would like to call it nostalgic but he would be wrong. She watches his ragtag performance of Viktor’s skate with shining eyes - like he could be more than he is. And when it is over she is more than happy to push her triplets onto her husband in order to join him by the beach. A private section that they always trekked to when Yuuri wanted to swim without anyone but her knowing - not even his parents have been told of this particular tradition. They sit there talking. Yuuri’s tail, a pretty mixture of darker blues and greys with hints of black along the edges of his fins, in the water enough that he stays shifted.
When they were younger Yuuko would always trace out small patterns like other children would give shapes to clouds.
She doesn’t this time, too busy chatting away about all that has changed since he left. And although she doesn’t sound hurt anymore, Yuuri knows that his disappearance has taken its toll of his best friend.
That night he falls asleep, legs no longer aching and a strange tightness in his chest. (Trying to force yourself to fall out of love is the hardest thing he has ever done - even if it is with skating and what it represents. Perhaps he’ll be able to convince his heart that simply teaching classes will be enough. Even if what he really wants is to, someday, skate once more with Viktor).
When he wakes the next morning it’s to a buzzing phone. He had ignored the notifications the night before - too busy catching up with Yuuko and too exhausted after to care for what they said.
“Hello,” he says, rubbing the sleep from his eyes.
“I-I’m sorry Yuuri,” Takeshi says over the line. “My kids uploaded the video, and it went viral! Everyone is freaking out, and it’s been retweeted all over the world!”
It seems the universe just won’t catch him a break.
He leaves his parents a note, quickly written and Yuuri isn’t even sure it makes sense. But he’s out the door before he can really think about that, racing down the steps and skidding through town with his hood drawn up over his head. Before he knows it he’s stripped to his underwear and stuffed the clothes he hastily threw on into his pack.
His and Yuuko’s escape still has the same tree with a wide enough opening to hide his belongings for at least three days. Any longer and his family will start to worry, even with the note.
The water bites against his skin right up until his body catches up with his shift and all he can feel is the need to go deeper, go further, not stop swimming until his life is left far behind.
Sometimes he doesn’t hate his ‘gift’.
  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He spends four days in the water, letting the ocean wash away each budding feeling until he is more fatigued from his emotions than the actual act of swimming itself. Yuuko is waiting for him when he surfaces, eyebrows raised and foot tapping against the sand - her sharp expression makes it clear that his note was not enough. She helps him beach himself and towels his hair as he tries to dry his tail enough to shift back.
It’s not painful exactly, but not comfortable either.
Yuuri thinks that Yuuko not telling him is her way of revenge. Because as he walks up to the house a poodle too big to be Vicchan but so very similar tackles him to the ground. Yuuko laughs. The dog barks. And Yuuri’s brain tries to comprehend what is going on.
With a little struggle he manages to get up and open the door enough to see his father caring a tray of tea and small snacks past, “I’m home,” he calls out because what else can he say?
“Oh, Yuuri, you’re back!” His father pauses, “And I see you’ve met one of our new guests. Looks just like Vicchan doesn’t he? A good-looking foreigner brought him, nice fellow.”
His father is still talking, but everything has become static - and the next thing he knows is that Viktor Nikiforov is walking by in nothing but a green robe.
“V-Viktor?!” He exclaims, unable to hide his shock, because this is the same man that asked for a commemorative photo. The same man that Yuuri has been chasing after since he can remember. This is the same man that had choreographed the program Yuuko’s daughters had made into a viral video. “What are you doing here?”
“Yuuri!” The accent is thick, even more so than at the GPF, “Starting today, I’m your coach. I’ll make you win the Grand Prix Final.”
Yuuri’s life changes in that second, the one that comes right after Viktor winks. (Winks. At him). And all those emotions he had been able to wash away with his four day swim come swelling back up even worse than before. Confusion leads, right before disbelief and then panic so thick it clogs his throat.
He takes a step back, eyes wide and more than ready to run back to the water. Yuuko, his devilish best friend, places a hand on his back and shoves - more than willing to take advantage of his tired state and the way his legs feel sluggish.
He stumbles into his home, jolted from his shock just enough to get out a rough, “What?”
The end of the day comes and Viktor is sleeping on their floor with Makkachin. A sight so surreal that Yuuri doesn’t even bother to pay attention to Minako-sensei has she rushes into the house, rambling about rumors.
“Yuuri!” Minako practically yells into his ear, “Why is Viktor sleeping in one of the inn’s robes?!”
“He soaked in the hot spring, had dinner, and then he fell asleep…” he tells his old teacher plaintively.
Minako rants again, explaining off rumors and things she had read up on and things that Yuuri already knows.
Knows but definitely does not believe.
Because there must be some mistake, this must be some prank. Viktor would never decide to leave skating just to coach a washed out skater from Japan that fumbled his way through a program. It’s simply not possible.
“They’re also saying that when he saw the video of you skating his routine it inspired him to become your coach!”
That’s new, “Huh?”
“He chose you,” she tells him, bulldozing on like she doesn’t notice his disbelief. “You brought him here!”
His heart flips in his chest, unable to keep from hoping even has his rational mind tells him not to. A mistake. It’s all just an elaborate mistake, he tells himself, nothing more.
Viktor wakes with a sneeze, distracting Yuuri from his thoughts with claims of hunger, “As your coach, I’d like to know what your favorite food is, Yuuri.”
  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A pig is what Viktor calls him. Yuuri has heard a hundred and one different insults, pigs often included - he has moved on from letting them affect him. There are much worse things that people can call him, after all.
But hearing Viktor say is makes a knife pierce right through him, gutting him like a fish. It hurts. Hurts in a way that not even losing the GPF so badly had. Not even having Yuri Plisetsky tell him to retire can compare to the sheer embarrassment.
The embarrassment only worsens when the man seems to flirt with him. And Yuuri says seems to because clearly it’s just Viktor’s personality and he shouldn’t take the advances seriously - why would the man want anything to do with him anyway? What right does Yuuri have to think of him in any other way than his coach, than an idol?
But it makes him nervous, makes him scared to be close, and so he flinches. Flails. Runs. Dodges questions and heads to his room because Yuuko will kill him if he tries to go for another swim.
(He’s happy, even if the embarrassment and hurt still linger under the surface, even if the unsure nature of the situation makes him sure it’s all just a dream. He’s happy, because Viktor is here and even if he realizes how hopeless coaching Yuuri is and leaves at least Yuuri had him for a small while. And Yuuri will be damned if he doesn’t use that time to try and convince Viktor to stay).
  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The second time he meets Yuri Plisetsky it’s when he about to tell Viktor that he’s fit enough to skate. Yuri kicks him, harshly, in the back - sending him sprawling onto the floor with new reporters just outside the rink.
“It’s all your fault. Apologize,” the blond tells him, aura threatening and a look in his eyes that spells danger even if he is only fifteen. “He promised me that he’d choreograph a program for me.”
This is how he learns the Yuri is completely underestimating him, entirely self-assured in the fact that he won gold in his division the year before. This also is how he learns that Viktor can’t keep a promise - whether forgetful or just uncaring he can’t really tell.
A competition comes out of it though. One that pits him against the newly dubbed Yurio in order to win Viktor’s favor. He’s nervous despite himself.
He’s nervous that he won’t be enough to keep Viktor here. Yuri has more potential, more confidence, more comfort with Viktor and more history as a fellow Russian skater. There is little reason for Viktor to stay and coach him instead when there is more support for leaving.
But that doesn’t mean he’s about to take losing Viktor sitting down - he spends most of the night at the ice rink, going through figures and getting the feel of the ice once more.
  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Eros. Eros. How is he supposed to do eros? He has no skill in seducing people, is not appealing in such a way. Why would Viktor think this is a good idea?
But he tries; works hard with Minako and Takeshi and Yuuko. Goes to every practice and listens to every bit of advice handed to him. He is not about to let Yuri take away his only chance to truly skate with Viktor, even if it is just in practice. He’s not about to let himself lose. Not again.
It’s more embarrassing them he lets on to announce that his eros is katsudon of all things. Embarrassing to watch Viktor’s face, embarrassing to see the laughter and disbelief in Yurio’s. So he runs, runs until his lungs ache and then runs some more, runs until his legs take him to the side of the ocean and he all but dives into the water.
All the same he goes to practice the next day.
  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“No,” is the first word out of his mouth when he sees what Viktor wants him to do. The first time he has said it to the man since this competition has started. The first time he has refused to do something for their training.
“What?” Yurio says it first, “Already giving up, pig?”
And as Yuuri stares at the waterfall all he can think is that there are sadly more important things than trying to one up Yurio even if it is to gain Viktor’s favor. There are things that have been pounded into him for years - since he was three. The one thing his parents were truly strict on.
No one must know.
And although that rule has been broken with Yuuko, and with Phichit, that was after years of knowing them. He has barely known these two for a week.
He shakes his head, “I’m not giving up. But I’m not getting in the water.” With that he doesn’t even bother to explain. Because the consequences of saying no are not nearly as dire as those should his secret be revealed. A secret he has not given much thought to since Viktor has arrived - distracted as he has been losing weight, distracted as he has been trying to win Viktor’s favor and attention. So he turns, slips past the two shocked Russians and breaks into a sprint once he is sure he is out of sight even as he hears Viktor call out his name.
Because he hasn’t given much thought to Viktor finding out, but now that he is thinking about it he can’t stop. What if Viktor thinks he’s a freak? What if Viktor laughs? What if Viktor refuses to coach him anymore? What if it makes Viktor leave for Russia?
Each question makes his chest tighten. He stops a passing car and asks for a lift back to the onsen. By the time he gets home he is more than ready to hide in his room for the rest of the night. But he doesn’t get more than ten minutes of quiet before there is a knock.
With a sigh he opens the door only to go wide-eyed at the sight of Viktor standing there, frown on his face and arms crossed.
“Yuuri,” the Russian accent comes across thicker when he’s frustrated Yuuri notes. “What was that?”
“I don’t do well in water,” Yuuri says curtly, because there are many things he will let Viktor convince him to do. Skate to eros, go through a competition against Yurio, not eat katsudon. But this is something that Yuuri will stay firm on, even as his comment earns him a surprised look.
“You’re scared of water?” And an assumption makes way for the perfect out, even if it’s not true. Even if it may come back to hurt him later on.
  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He wins. He wins. Viktor is staying. Viktor is going to be his coach. His heart can barely keep up with the amount of happiness that is flooding through his veins. Sudden and desperate and so very intoxicating that he can hardly understand.
Viktor is staying. Alone. With Yuuri. Which means…
Which means he’s going to be spending more and more time with Yuuri.
Oh.
He spends the next week hiding, more fearful of Viktor seeing his faults than anything else. (His secret kept well within that list). Just because he won Viktor over in that competition doesn’t mean that Viktor will want to stay once he gets to actually know Yuuri. Really gets to know Yuuri.
A week of avoidance and a heart to heart by the cherry blossom tree brings them closer than Yuuri could have ever imagined.
But that closeness means they are practically inseparable. They eat together, sleep in rooms right next to each other, practice together, go to and from the rink together, and travel together from the preliminary competition. Yuuri barely has time to breathe. And with Viktor thinking he is afraid of water now it means the most Yuuri can do is take a shower - not nearly enough to shift, he needs to be at least half submerged.
And it goes like that, day in and out. Two weeks turn to three and then four and soon a month and a half has passed without a shift and Yuuri’s legs ache. Practice becomes difficult around the fifth week, but he refuses to let it show.
It’s the sixth week that has his legs shaking, and with more determination than ever he hits the ice, Yuuko nearby to watch as she does from time to time. It’s a simple jump, he can pull it off without a thought normally. But now is not normally and now his legs are weaker than ever. He hits the ice hard. Harder than most falls but before he even hears his name be called he knows he’s not significantly hurt. Bruised? Most likely. Broken? Not even close.
Viktor reaches him first, “Yuuri?”
The concern hits him first. A gloved hand on his shoulder, another comes - smaller, Yuuko - to rest against his arm.
“Yuuri, are you okay?”
He gives a huff, aiming for frustration rather than pain, “I’m fine.”
“Your take off was perfect, you were tight with you spins and-“
“Yuuri,” Yuuko cuts into Viktor’s ranting. Her eyes are sharp. Sharp in the way that means Yuuri is in trouble and that he will be getting a talking to. He gulps but nods nonetheless.
“I’m fine, Viktor,” he turns to his coach - friend - and offers a smile as he forces his aching legs to move. “I can finish practice.”
“Yuuri, that fall-“
“Wasn’t that bad,” he insists but by the way Viktor’s blue eyes harden he can tell it was the wrong thing to say.
“As your coach I am ordering you off the rink for the rest of the day.” His jaw is set, hands on his hips and skates planted.
“Vikto-“
“No, Yuuri,” Yuuko taps her finger against his arm once. “You need to rest. You’ve been pushing yourself too hard.”
   ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He meets her at their little section of beach, face sheepish and trying not to show how hard even walking is starting to become. She sees right through him.
“In the water, now.”
He obeys easily, all too eager to stop the pain and feel the cool lapping of the ocean once more. It’s his fastest shift yet, painful for the first time in what feels like forever.
“Kami, Yuuri, how long has it been?” Yuuko asks from her perch on the sand as he slides himself onto the beach enough to talk.
Thinking back he really should have seen this coming. “A month,” he says tentatively, because he knows that he should be in the water every two weeks, “probably more. But I’ve been busy! I need to train and Viktor-“
“You should tell him.”
“What?!” He feels his heart stop in his chest, not prepared for such a declaration.
“Viktor doesn’t seem like the type to go and tell everyone,” Yuuko continues as if she hasn’t just shattered his world. “Mari-nee-chan agrees, too.”
“You talked to my sister,” he wheezes out.
“And with how much time you two spend together it’s bound to come out at some point,” Yuuko taps her chin as if she is thinking all of this up on the spot. “The longer you wait the more he’ll feel betrayed.”
“But-“
“No ‘but’s,” she tells him with a wave of her hand. “Besides, if you don’t this could happen again.”
“Yu-chan,” he tries, because this isn’t about Viktor telling someone else. “It’s just…” he tries to find the words, the ones that will explain perfectly why he is so reluctant. Because he has considered it. Considered telling Viktor everything and dismissed it for fear of abandonment. He isn’t sure he can say that outload… but… But this is Yuuko. Yuuko who he can tell everything. “Don’t you think this is all a bit too much?”
“Too much?” Yuuko’s gaze goes soft with understanding. “Yuuri, this is the man that didn’t run after you said katsudon was your eros.”
He feels a blush run across his face, heavy and entirely not because of how cold the water is. “Who…”
“Mari, Minako and I have weekly get-togethers,” Yuuko says cheerfully.
  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“I take it you and Yuuko talked.” He jumps at the voice, sputtering as his sister comes out from the shadows she was lurking in. “Is that why you’re loitering out here?”
“I’m not loitering,” he denies it, head shaking and arms flailing. It had only been ten minutes, really.
His sister hums, eyes shrewd. “I’ll support whatever you decide,” she places a cigarette between her lips. “Now get inside, fish-boy.”
He glances at her one more time, not in the least offended by her nickname. He shakes his head as he finally slides open the door nerves flaring bright and hot under his skin. What greets him is the sight of his mother and Viktor sitting together, Makkachin to the side seemingly content to just bask in his mother’s attention.
It makes him smile despite his anxiety. Despite the fact he is about to tell someone his deepest secret. Despite the fact that this is Viktor. Viktor who smiles and laughs and spends his time with Yuuri despite all his flaws. Viktor who Yuuri has idolized and chased since the first time he saw the man skate. Viktor who stole Yuuri’s heart with his skating and is doing it again with his everything.
He shuffles out of his shoes, “I’m home.”
“Ah, Yuuri, how’s Yuuko doing?” His mother smiles up at him, not bothering to stop petting the poodle relaxing by her knees.
“She’s doing well,” he gives a shaky smile. He can’t bring himself to look at Viktor, not yet. “Mom, are the hot springs cleared?”
There is shock first, his mom’s eyes wide as they skitter from him to Viktor and back. But understanding fills them all too fast, a smile brighter than Yuuri has seen from her since he came home. “Mari cleared them out a half-hour ago.” Of course his sister did. Yuuko and her have been talking, after all. He nods, perhaps for a few seconds too long because his mother gives him an encouraging look, “I’ll keep Makkachin company while you two talk.”
“Thank you,” he murmurs. “Viktor,” he starts, voice small and questioning, “I- there’s… There’s something I need to tell you.”
Viktor’s ocean blue eyes are filled with more confusion than anything else, but curiosity and trust lay there too. With little fuss his coach - friend, more? - follows as Yuuri tracks his way to the largest hot spring they have.
“Yuuri, aren’t you scared of water?” Viktor asks him as Yuuri pulls his clothes off with shaking hands and butterflies twisting a monsoon in his stomach.
“Not really,” he gives a small smile, wrapping a towel around himself as he opens the door, the cool air thick with warming steam. He pauses, staring down at the water - he’s come this far, he isn’t going to back down. (But that doesn’t mean he can’t take a few moment to catch his breath).
“Yuuri?” Viktor calls out from behind him.
“Just…” he takes the first step in, “don’t freak out, okay?”
The next few steps are easier to take. He closes his eyes as he sinks lower into the water, closes his eyes and feels the shift take place. Knows what Viktor is seeing, and knows that the steam can’t hide it. Knows by the not-so-quiet gasp.
“You’re…” there is shock there, disbelief in his voice, and Yuuri isn’t sure if he wants to open his eyes but if he doesn’t then he will never know. He thinks that’s even harder than rejection.
Viktor’s face in that moment is something he wouldn’t trade for the world. In fact, he would trade the world to never forget it. Amazement, mixed so nicely with wonder and an emotion slithering in blue depths that Yuuri can’t quiet place. There is a smile, even as his mouth hangs open in surprise. His gaze wracking over Yuuri’s figure.
Yuuri moves closer to the edge that Viktor stands by, unsure how to continue from here. So he says nothing, waiting for Viktor to do something, anything.
“You’re part fish,” finally comes, soft but loud in the silence.
“Only if half of me is submerged in water,” he explains, trying to gauge Viktor’s next move - the man has always surprised him, though, and this time is no different.
“Yuuri, this is incredible!” He has never seen anyone strip so fast, but the next thing he knows the man is sliding in next to him, sea blue gaze shining like the stars. “Can I?” Viktor asks, hands hovering over Yuuri’s tail.
He nods, because he has never really been opposed to people touching his tail, “It might be-“
“Slimmy,” Viktor exclaims, excitement so thick in his tone. “So this is why you didn’t want to go under the waterfall.”
Yuuri’s tail twitches, “I’d only known you for a week.”
Viktor hums still massaging his fingers over blue and grey scales; Yuuri takes that as understanding for his reasoning.
“It’s also why I fell earlier,” he tells him. “My legs hurt if I don’t go in the water for too long.”
This time the hands do pause, and Yuuri looks up from the water to meet Viktor’s piercing gaze, “Why did you…”
“Wait so long?” Yuuri finishes with a half shrug, “We were always together, and I was too tired by the time we separated to do anything but sleep. Before I knew it I had lost track of time.”
“I’m disappointed,” the two words come and shatter the little window of happiness that Yuuri could just about touch.
“I- what?”
“You should know better than to ignore your health!” Viktor berates him, but his hand hasn’t left Yuuri’s tail and from the looks of it Viktor isn’t so much disappointed as angry that Yuuri would abuse his body so harshly. An athlete should do everything to keep healthy, after all, their very livelihood depends on it. And with career lengths so short for figure skaters there is not much else that takes such priority. “How often do you need to…” Viktor makes a gesture with his free hand, encompassing Yuuri’s whole figure.
Yuuri cracks a small smile, “About two weeks.”
“Then we’ll set up a schedule,” Viktor announces. “We can’t have you falling like that again. You could get seriously hurt! Then what? You won’t be able to win the GPF with a broken bone.”
“Hai,” he smiles up at his ranting coach - friend, more? - and lets the pounding in his heart spread happiness throughout his veins. Maybe jumping for the stars is possible after all. Maybe his dreams were never too big for his fins and maybe they didn’t come in quite the way he thought, but they came true. Because Viktor didn’t laugh. Didn’t leave. Didn’t call him a freak.
Viktor accepted Yuuri.

Ok, so I panicked and kissed this human so he wouldn’t drown. And I know you don’t want me to keep him, and we can’t let him leave if he knows about us mere people so what do you want to do? hmm maybe quinn and steve and she saves bucky and they end up wanting to keep him.
IT’S MERMAY BITCHES SO I’M ENDING THIS MONTH WITH A BANG!
Instead of waking up with his mate in his arms, Steve wakes up in their nest with one of her sharks cuddled close–a trouble making Great White by the name of Adaeze. Okay, that’s not fair. It’s not Adaeze’s fault that Steve’s a deep sleeper…and that’s really not even a good excuse for why he didn’t notice when his mate’s body was replaced by something significantly bigger and wider in his sleep. Adaeze bumps the center of Steve’s chest in apology and he smiles at her and gives her a few friendly strokes along her belly to make sure she knows he’s not the least bit upset with her–as if he could be because she’s a gentle giant and he’s always been sweet on her with a scar that runs down the center of her eye that reminds him a little too much of Quinn.
After Adaeze swims off and all the other sharks that have for whatever reason gotten attached to his mate greet Steve and then head off behind Adaeze for a morning feeding frenzy, Steve swims around the little piece of the reef he and Quinn have carved out for themselves. Even if she wasn’t so much bigger than all the other little fish, her particular pattern of orange and turquoise striping isn’t common to this side of the ocean. He looks, even beyond the reef a bit, but she’s nowhere to be found.
So, he digs into their bond and stretches it out as far as he can, letting the Quinn and his concern flood through it. They’re only vacationing here. They don’t know what the humans are like on this side of the world. She could be lost or worse and there’s no response from his end of the bond and he’s really worried now. This is exactly why he told her they should’ve found some other local mer-folk instead of staying in a random patch of the ocean
Suddenly, Quinn’s voice calls out his name: Steve. It would definitely be a welcome relief if it wasn’t accompanied by a surge of panic. He looks all around and, in the distance, can see her speeding toward him–but not nearly as fast as she usually is. I’m not hurt, she reassures him when she feels his panic. He squints and…is she dragging something? Is that what’s slowing her down?
Steve swims toward Quinn to meet her in the middle but comes to a stop when he sees that what she’s lugging behind her is a body. Um, she starts between their bond and smiles meekly. Don’t be mad?
Why would I be mad? Did you kill him? A lot of mer-folk out there–even some in their own pod–have strained and even hostile realtionships with the humans. Quinn and Steve have a more neutral approach to humans. They only resort to killing humans if the human is being the aggressor.
No, she plays around with the seashell necklace he made her and she’s being too aloof for his comfort. Finally, Steve takes a look at the human and the first thing he sees is that his feet have started to slow, painful process of mending together.
Quinn! His attention snaps to her and now she’s definitely not looking him in the eye. What were you thinking? You know we’re supposed to ask the pod before we turn a human and–why did you turn a human?
Technically, I made the pod, so I don’t really actually have to ask for their opinion, she grouses. I was trying to find some shells to make you something for our anniversary and I got caught in a human net but this human saved me but then they started to torture him and they were drowning him and I wanted to save him because he’s important to you–
Steve interrupts her somehow single ranting thought with, I don’t even know this human, Quinn. I don’t know any humans.
Maybe you don’t know any now, but you used to, she points out. She gently places the human in the sand, puts his head in her lap, and pushes the dark hair away from the human’s face. We all used to know humans. Quinn shoves images into their bond–memories, actually. From both her human life and his human life. Look at him and you’ll remember.
Steve stares at the human and the dimple in his chin is what helps the most, he thinks. Or it might be the lack of arm. Steve touches the face and remembers this face being close to his own. A long, long time ago, it feels like. He remembers the searing pain from watching a fall. It was cold then. Almost as cold as the icy waters he was born in.
Bucky, Steve remembers.
Happy anniversary, Quinn proudly announces and reaches out to brush her own fingers across Steve’s cheek.
-
Mer-folk that are made rather than born have a hard time remembering their human lives immediately after the transformation. Some, like Quinn, can remember the events that led up to the change, but only because it was so traumatic. Steve didn’t remember because even if the actual nosedive he took into the ice was traumatic, he actually pretty much fell asleep and woke up changed.
When Bucky wakes up, he doesn’t remember much of anything, it seems. Steve and Quinn are both thankful for that because it makes accepting the change a whole lot easier. Quinn thinks it’s best to explain the ways of the mer-folk to Bucky before bringing up his shared past with Bucky. Still, Steve can’t help but ask Bucky if he remembers anything before the change. All Bucky remembers are seeing Quinn’s colors and feeling thankful…which Steve can relate to. It’s hard to forget Quinn. Maybe that’s the reason he fell in love with her so easily.
Thank you, Bucky tells Quinn. I don’t remember why, but I know you saved me in more ways than you can really know.
-
Once Bucky can swim with his own one tail, Quinn and Steve cut their vacation short and start their trek back to their pod. They can’t keep Bucky hidden away forever. They need to fess up about what’s happened.
You broke the rules for me? Bucky questions.
Quinn shrugs. There’s not some universal law where mer-folk can’t be made. It just…makes things a lot easier if humans don’t know about us, so most mer-folk leave humans alone. Our pod is like our family, so we promised we would discuss making mer-folk before we did it. I just…didn’t have time to do that. He stares at her in awe and she starts squirming around. She’s always that way about praise. Anyway, the pod won’t care. They’re pretty easy going about this kind of thing. I can always pull rank if I need to.
You’re the leader?
She made most of the pod, Steve explains. She saved most of the pod. So, yeah, she’s the leader. He sends her a sharp look when she starts to mentally protest. I think Quinn’s right. The pod really won’t care. They love Quinn too much to tell her no. Everyone loves Quinn, Steve tells Bucky, matter-of-fact. Even sharks.
Adaeze, Quinn croons and throws her arms around the Great White. Steve watches fondly and Quinn’s affection for the shark rolls off her and through their bond in waves. What a sweet girl. Are you gonna come home with us? Hey! Hey, where you going?
Adaeze makes her way over to Bucky and it’s probably because Bucky’s tail has the look of a Great White, too. They can’t feel Bucky’s panic because they’re not bonded with him, but they can see it. Should I…not move?
Humans. They always think the world revolves around them. Just because it has sharp teeth don’t mean it’ll try and kill you. Adaeze won’t hurt you unless you give her a reason to…or if you’re small enough to eat. Which you’re not.
She’ll probably try to marry you, though, Steve teases and bubbles erupt from his and Quinn’s mouths when they laugh at Bucky’s horrified expression.

On their way back to the pod, Steve sometimes physically aches with the need to ask Bucky about what happened after he fell. Ask what happened to his arm. Ask exactly how the hell he’s even alive. Before Bucky woke up from the transformation, Quinn told Steve that Bucky actually had a shining arm when the men he worked for fished her out of the water, but when they dropped him back down to start the torture, it was gone. She reasoned they removed it either because metal rusts in water or because it would make it easier for him to defend himself. Whatever happened, Quinn tells Steve he shouldn’t push Bucky too much because Bucky has already dealt with so much—transformation into one of the mer-folk not included.
So, Quinn and Steve let Bucky ask questions about mer-folk which he has a lot of and that’s to be expected. Most of them are harmless. They’re questions like: Can we talk to fish? (No. We can only talk with other mer-folk.) How can we talk with other mer-folk? (We sing songs, but we can use our minds, too.) Is there a range? (Yes.) How is it possible? (How is it possible fish become one in their big groups? How did the humans first make their languages? It just is.) You can’t really marry fish, can you? (Our bonds only work with other mer-folk, so far as I know. I guess you could? I don’t think the poor fish you want to marry would like it very much…if they even understand what you want to do.)
One day, Bucky watches Quinn and Steve as they converse with their own personal bond. Brows furrowed, he interrupts them with the question, what do you mean by bond?
Quinn blinks. To bond is to become one—mind, body, and soul. Steve and I are mated. We can feel what the other does. I die, he dies. He dies, I die. We chose each other. Forever.
Can you mate with more than one mer-folk?
Yes, she answers slowly yet truthfully. It is your soul to split, but you should always be cautious before you make that choice. Like I told you, once you bond, it isn’t you and you alone that you risk anymore.
Another day, when Quinn is out with Adaeze, on the hunt for food, Bucky hesitantly asks, how are the mer-folk made?
It depends, Steve finally decides on because that’s the truth. Some are born to two mer-folk parents. Most are made by another with a kiss. I don’t know the exact science behind it, but most of us think it happens because the mer-folk shares a breath of life with the human. And then some are born…from violence.
Bucky stares ahead, in the direction where Steve’s mate vanished with a shark. That’s how Quinn was made, wasn’t it?
It was only because she loved someone they said she shouldn’t have. They beat her and wrapped her in some old sheets and threw her into the river. She screamed. They knew she wasn’t dead. But…they didn’t care. Steve closes his eyes for a moment. He always feels so much when he thinks about this—fury, sadness, pride. Old mer-folk tell stories about women that men threw overboard—they swallowed the saltwater and learned to love the taste, their throats were bitten and nibbled at by fish until they had gills of their own, their legs tied up melted until it was one fin, and then…they wanted blood. Quinn didn’t end up that way. No, she cried. Cried so much it could become an ocean itself. She watched the family she was forced to leave behind. She couldn’t take it anymore and went north. Then, she found me.
When’d you realize you loved her?
I think I’ve loved her since I woke up this way. She’s the one I woke up to in this brand new life. She’s kind of become my world, Steve admits sheepishly. But I didn’t realize it until she actually told me about how she was made. She took me to the river she was born in. She does that sometimes. There she told me. I had to make her leave because I swear I would’ve stalked those waters and search for the bastards that hurt her. Pull them under and make them bleed and tear them to pieces. I felt so much hate—a kind of hate I’ve only felt one other time in my life. She could’ve let that hate take her over, but she didn’t. Born from hate and it only made her love.
Bucky turns to stare at Steve. Sorry to make you feel that way, pal. Steve’s brows furrow and Bucky looks at Steve with this…exhaustion. A tiredness that Steve can’t even begin to understand. The first time you felt that hate–it was when I fell, wasn’t it?
Steve reaches out and grips Bucky’s shoulder, squeezes. Yeah, Buck. It was.
So, how’d you end up in the ocean?
After I lost you…I went after Hydra. Ended up on a plane. Beat Scmidt, but I had to put the plane in the water. Quinn found me before I bit the bullet. She saved me.
You found a helluva gal.
I know I did.

Before we meet the pod, here’s what you should know. I made Natasha then Clint then Tony then Wanda. Tony made Rhodey and Pepper. Steve made Sam. Sometimes, Tony and me visit Bruce. He’s a human, but he’s on the run from other humans, so he’ll keep our secret safe. Thor is…something else. Human but not human. Kind of like what you and Steve were when you were human, but he’s older. I like it when he visits the surface world and stops by to see us. He’s fun.
Stop swooning over Thor, Steve jokes.
I’ll stop swooning when you stop swooning, too, she throws back at him and smiles smugly. Oh, and Wanda has magic. They did things to her. They thought it didn’t take and tried to get rid of her. She’s almost as new to the pod as you are. I think you two will get along really great.
Helluva gal, Bucky says to Steve but then remembers that Quinn is close enough to hear too.
I know she is! So is Natasha! And Pepper!
Steve looks at Quinn in fond exasperation but decides not to point out that Bucky was talking about her.
-
As it turns out, Natasha and Wanda knew Bucky in his human life, too. Well, Wanda had heard of the infamous Winter Soldier. Natasha had actually met Bucky when she was a little girl. Natasha is wary of Bucky, but she and the whole pod accept him anyway.

When Steve’s away, Quinn takes Bucky up to the surface of the water, and then hauls herself to sit on some rocks. Through the water, Bucky can see her pat a spot next to her, so he hauls himself up beside her. The sun’s started to set. After a little bit, Quinn muses, I don’t know if I’m supposed to say I’m happy or I’m sorry you got your memories back.
Both? Bucky shrugs. He doesn’t ask how she knows. She probably knows everything Steve knows and more. I’m happy I remember Steve–wait. Do you…know about…?
You and Steve? Together when you were humans? Yeah.
Hold on. You knew? And you saved me anyway?
Quinn squints at Bucky and cocks her head to the side. I saved you because you saved me. It was the right thing to do. She glances down and swirls her tail around in the water. I love Steve, too. If he wants to be with you over me, I wouldn’t care. As long as he’s happy, I’m happy. Just make sure he doesn’t do anything stupid since, y'know, we share a soul now.
I’m sorry, Quinn, but I don’t think anyone could stop Steve from doing something stupid. He pauses. You…dont have to leave if you don’t want to. I mean, what if you and me–I like you. A lot.
Quinn audibly sighs. Oh good. I was hoping it wasn’t just me and Steve.
You both like me?
You act like it’s hard for people to fall in love with you!
So do you!
Quinn covers her face with her hands. Can I kiss you?
I don’t know. Can you?
I hate you.
No you don’t.
No. Quinn drops her hands and leans forward so her lips brush across Bucky’s. No, I don’t.
