it's sort of a juxtaposition, but i think jason is firmly the most fucked up little guy in the batfam and, because of that, simultaneously the least fucked up little guy, or at least aware enough that he is a fucked up little guy and should act accordingly (meaning: not kidnap the first person he catches feelings for). that's not to say he has no potential as the reader's unwanted brotherhusband, but just that it'd be more of a,,, slow descent into justifying why he deserves to have One Nice Thing despite the fact that the object of his affections does not wish to be that nice thing, if that makes sense.

personally, i'm also very partial to the idea of jason as the resident voice of reason, so i might be a little biased towards putting him in a situation where he can slip you a bus ticket and a few stolen watches and tell you to gtfo until the rest of his family starts acting less deranged. dick just off-handedly mentions that he's thinking about upgrading you from sibling to significant other and jason's just immediately like 'i did not come back to life so y'all could pull this sweet home alabama bs'. it feels like it'd suit him.

So basically, Bruce gets therapy after he loses his parents and thus is a mostly well-adjusted member of society. After a brief but passionate relationship with Talia al-Ghul, Damian is born, and is raised by Talia for a while before he goes off to meet his father. He and Bruce bond for a few years and one day, he meets Stephanie, who's in an unstable home environment, father is in-and-out of prison, that sort of thing, and takes her in with some joint custody with Crystal Brown. Then one day, Steph brings her boyfriend Tim along, and he's Tim, so you can imagine how that goes down. Damian and Tim have some friction initially but they eventually learn to get along with each other. Then we meet Jason in a similar manner to how Bruce found him in canon, but instead of the Batmobile, it was just his car. Then we find Dick, who similar to Jason, has pretty much the exact same backstory except he's 9 instead of 23 like he normally would be at this point in Bruce's life. Along the way, we get Babs, Cass, Harper and Duke, that happens however it happens.

Omg wait, Damian being big protective brother to Stephanie tho. He tries to give the shovel talk to Tim who is so amused. Little bitty Jason being thrown into this weird mishmash family and having to be basically tamed by Steph and Damian (Tim totally enables the kid). Jason stepping up as big brother for little Dickie. Except Dick totally still wants to murder Zucco, so now all the kids have to band together to help the kid out.

i saw an account post that, unfortunately, if you are a jason todd fan account then you’ve most definitely gotten an ask along the lines of “if you like fanon jason then you’ll definitely like canon helena/steph/mia” and was wondering if you’ve ever gotten an ask like that

I've gotten a few about Helena specifically, never Steph or Mia so I'm going to talk about Helena rather than generalize what I'm about to say to both of them too (because I was actually thinking about this a few weeks ago!)

Those people are right...in a way. If you want christian guilt (that Jason does not in UTRH and should not ever struggle with) and genuine efforts to be accepted by the Bats? You want Helena. A character whose relationship with killing can be benefited by people bringing her into their light without rendering her previous choices pointlessly antagonistic? that's Helena.

Then there's also the factor of Helena often, in canon, being treated as unstable and untrustworthy, no matter what she does to prove otherwise. and that's seen as a continued failing on her part, even if it's others that refuse to believe in her. Jason constantly being pushed into those situations in fanon and canon is very Helena coded. He's got her good and bad.

But if you like the Jason from UTRH era, arguably the best written Jason post-resurrection (which isn't saying much because...we all know how he's written most of the time), then Helena would never work for you because they're so different. Even with fanon, there's only a certain extent it can apply to. Helena's not Bruce daughter, he didn't raise her, she was never family for him outside the costume (or in it. but that hurts me to say), and she certainly wasn't Dick's sister. So those dynamics should be different inherently, even in fanon where they're altered to resemble something like what Helena has. There's still a history that Jason has here that she naturally doesn't.

I think it's too vague and unhelpful of a thing to say if you're trying to make people interested in Helena or change their portrayal of Jason. But I do see the basis of it.

So, I just got this amazingly lovely Commission from @stephreynaart of my two Gravity Falls OCs, Maggie and Sydney, as sort of an early Christmas gift for myself (and because I saw they were having a sale on their Comm prices)! And my goodness, they absolutely knocked it out of the park. My heart is so full 🥺😭🫶🏼

The idea is based off this section of the long Gravity Falls fic I’ve been writing on-and-off with my best friend, Matilda (again, not her real name, just an alias for privacy) since around 2020, though I think I actually started writing it before beginning to collaborate with her around 2018. So this fic has been in the works for a very long time!! But we’re almost finished with it (we’re very close) and are planning to continue writing it so it gets done eventually!! So that’s very exciting.

Anyway, the scene takes place during the episode Soos and the Real Girl in Season Two, and Maggie has had a crush on Sydney for a very long time, since they first met in The Time Traveler’s Pig back in Season One. And this is when they finally have their first kiss at Hoo-Ha Owl’s Jamboree:

“You have quite the moves, Syd.” I laughed, my face becoming warmer, and my hands rubbing against my thighs as I searched for something to occupy them with.

She bumped my shoulder with a playful smirk occupying her face, “They weren’t as impressive as when you knocked that beaver with a chair! That look of determination on your face was… whoa.” 

I could’ve sworn she turned away after saying that, but I didn’t comprehend why.

My smile soon faded into more of a frown, “I don’t think I could have handled all of those animatronics without you.”

“I mess things up all the time, and I’m not as brave as you are.” I looked at the ball pit below us, groaning. “Soos didn’t get along with Melody because of me. It’s just that you’re so courageous, I don’t know if I’m good enough.”

Sydney sighed and put an arm around me, “Who got the courage to talk to me?”

I looked up at her, pausing for a moment, “I did?”

“Who helped stop a Summerween monster?”

“You and Soos did.”

“Maggie, you still helped! Who got up the courage to stop Gideon from taking over the town with his giant robot?”

I smiled, “I did.”

“Who stood up to Bill Cipher twice?”

I stood up, “I did!”

“I don’t like you because of traits you think matter. I like you because of traits you have that do matter. You’re courageous, you’re smart, and you’ve protected me more than once.” She chuckled softly. “Honestly, I have doubts too, so you’re not alone. But I think it’s safe to say that going to that fair and meeting you was the best decision I ever made.”

I couldn’t help but feel extremely warm, and my heart started beating faster than before. It was no longer a hummingbird, more like an avalanche of rocks tumbling down the side of a mountain, pushing everything else in its path away.

“You were amazing back there just now, you know. And I would’ve been toast if it wasn’t for those Taekwondo moves you showed me that one time. How about you give yourself some credit once in awhile and enjoy things as they come.”

She leaned forward and gave me a huge bear hug. I reciprocated it, enjoying the moment of peace and quiet after the chaos of .GIFfany.

“Like what?” I asked, wanting some clarification.

“Like this.”

Before I could even process what was occurring, Sydney leaned forward. Her face was becoming closer to mine, and my heart became a hummingbird needing desperate release from a cage. I almost leaned back because of instinct, and there was part of me that didn’t want to allow myself to believe that what was occurring was really occurring. 

Then her lips connected with mine.

It was gentle and tentative at first, and for a moment, all I could focus on was how smooth and delicate Sydney’s mouth felt. Despite my fear, I couldn’t help but reciprocate. The kiss was filled with an unspoken promise and understanding that our connection ran deeper than any self-doubt I harbored. And I couldn’t believe she felt the same way about me as I did about her. This entire time we could’ve been doing this.

The kiss deepened and our hands soon found each other. They interlocked like the twine of a basket, finding each other in the midst of this newfound connection. My other hand explored Syndey’s hair, her wonderful, flowing locks that cascaded like a waterfall down her back.

Sydney laughed once we separated, and we both panted, breathless. Our foreheads rested against each other, “We should probably go. I think we should give Soos and Melody some time alone.”

I laughed and followed her down, and Mabel tackled me in the ball pit.

“MAGGIE, YOU HAD YOUR FIRST KISS! It seems Soos and Melody aren’t the only match meant to be.” Mabel grinned.

“It seems like it.” I quickly hugged her and adjusted my glasses, which were starting to slide down my face.

emma frost punisher au?

emma frost punisher au diverges from 616 canon after genosha. in 616, emma returns to the mansion and snaps cassandra nova's neck, who comes back to life and is shot by professor x, presumably killing her. emma then rejoins the x-men as a teacher once again, this time for the xavier institute. in my au, emma doesn't come back to the x-men. she takes the phrase "perfect faberge killing machine" literally- she becomes the punisher.

one of the things i really love about this au is that for emma as the punisher, it really is about the children in a way that it isnt necessarily for frank castle (this is not the place to discuss my punisher opinions but i do have them).

this panel from new x-men #116 is really interesting to me because contrary to jean's argument, emma isn't trying to be magneto when she becomes the punisher. she isn't looking for this widespread social political change. she's not a spearhead for change like magneto or professor x. she's emma frost and she's a diamond. she is by definition her own best friend and she doesn't need anyone else. she's the punisher. there's a very individualist philosophy at the core of emma frost as the punisher that doesn't stop with rejecting magneto or the professor's ideologies. when emma leaves mutant society to become the punisher, what that means is that she will never be a teacher again as long as people are threatening genocidal violence on mutants, because her students will be attacked and she will survive having failed to keep them alive.

because of her diamond form, emma isn't as worried about like. staying alive and out of bodily harm as frank castle as the punisher is- she's practically invulnerable. she's also not as proficent with weapons, and relies on her brute strength in diamond form to compensate. because she's in diamond form so much, she uses her telepathy less. punisher emma using her body as a weapon in a very violent way is really interesting to me because it's a very clear contrast to everything about emma frost and the way she positions herself.

like she says in classic x-men #34, her body is her weapon, and her mind is what she wins her battles with. an emma frost in diamond form being the punisher is using her body and mind in very different ways to the classic emma frost

another thing i love about punisher emma is that she doesn't need body armor because she is the body armor in diamond form, so she just wears her typical emma frost outfits. she also still wears white, so she's just constantly covered in blood. they start calling her the red queen eventually.

I was wondering, what makes Steph and Jason’s characters different to you?

ooooooh okay I'm gonna be speaking generally here bc most of my Jason and Steph brain is taken up by my au which is obviously not canon-based

I'll start with their similarities, and then get into how I think they diverge

the most obvious similarities are their upbringings/childhoods. both with moms who are addicts, and dads in the criminal world (now, Jason's mom obviously dies and Steph's doesn't. and Steph's dad was a villain and Jason's dad was a 'goon' so there are different degrees to this)

they both grew up in poverty, were both Robin, both died (or, 'died') brutally at the hands of a villain. I think they're both underestimated and mistreated by the other bats

these similarities, though, make for very different characters. I think Steph can be seen as a impulsive, brash, eager to prove herself. she cares deeply and fundamentally wants to do good

Jason, on the other hand is angry, meticulous, pessimistic (but also, so so so secretly hopeful. like, he wouldn't keep coming back to Bruce is he didn't have some hope. he wouldn't do the whole utrh final confrontation if part of him wasn't at least a little bit hopeful it might actually go his way)

I think Steph looks at a fucked up world and thinks she can fix it (restorative justice), even if no one else thinks she can. and she's going to try and do it her way.

Jason looks at a fucked up world and thinks he can control it (preventative measures). like, I think part of his personal philosophy is well, someone has to do it I guess it'll be me since no one else is willing to do what needs to be done.

also Steph is, like, nice. and Jason is, in general, an asshole (affectionate)

actually one of my most unpopular opinions is probably that lewis's run on robin is just. not good lol. and the sweet timsteph panels may be the highlight but honestly. he's got this vision in his head of timsteph together, but it's okay tim characterization at best. it's actually not great steph characterization & he also kind of reinforces the idea that she's really not that good at the whole vigilante thing & her riddler side plot doesn't make her look great at all. it's a complete tonal mess & doesn't feel like a robin story at all. it completely misses the mark of actually doing anything interesting with tim losing his money and moving downtown to where gotham is still rebuilding to focus on weird ass magic plots instead. all the civilian stuff feels hollow. his tim doesn't have any good bonds outside of steph. the jack stuff is weird and nonsensical. the time travel 16th birthday story is offensively bad for tim considering one of his best friends is a time traveler & tim had also time traveled!!

#really the panels of tim asking dana to help him cook & making soup for steph are like. the only decent part of it to me. #everything else you can just tell he did NOT want to be writing robin lol #and ik people really love his steph and that's fair because it's probably one of the times she was treated better than usual #but his steph to me is like. that's it? he doesn't make her particularly competent or anything #and he added some stereotypes to her character imo #and his tim had some good moments for sure #see: thinking about his mom and stuff like that #but aside from a few panels his tim is so. meh.

What is something you wish more people understood about you or if you prefer about your job or hobbies?

Ahhh, oh gosh SO much, honestly.

So I'm a graphic designer by trade, and an illustrator and freelance designer as my side gig, and my hobbies are art-related as well.

FOR SURE, I have to say that I wish people respected designers as the creatives we are. I've GENUINELY had clients who think all I do is hit a "design ad" button and BOOM it's done, and don't think they should have to pay me because – and this is ONLY because I've been doing this for 20 years – I can finish a print ad in under an hour, and booklets under 5, not taking into account the AMOUNT OF CHANGES and STUPID things I have to talk people out of to not make them look bad.

Some other things:

Microsoft Word is not a design program. I HATED this when I worked at the Paper. Good fucking LORD the amount of times I've had to rebuild an ad because the client couldn't resize it themselves and couldn't understand why if they moved something everything fucked up is astounding.

Canva is good for mocking up design, but I'm sorry, you're NOT a designer if you learned design in Canva. I know it sounds gatekeepy and pretentious, and I am sorry about that, but even with Canva you need to know SOME principles of design to get something appealing out of it. A designer, after-all, MADE your templates you're working from. We're everywhere. We're a silent bunch that's under-appreciated. You're never going to get the precision and nuance and a proper eye that you'll get from a designer. Sure you'll get quick and dirty designs, work fine for socials, but I LOATHE when people send me shit they made in Canva that I have to, once again, rebuild because they can't figure out how to resize in Canva and complained to me that Canva isn't making it look nice when they export it (to be fair, that's a them problem, the tools ARE there for you to do that stuff)

When your designer tells you one thing and you're trying to push for another, your designer is trying to save you the embarrassment of your "vision". We know what we're doing. We spend most of our days knowing market trends and what will make eyes go to your advertisements and products.

Strokes don't fix everything.

I can't read your mind. PLEASE, if you wanted an element there from the start, you need to tell me, and not tell me I'm a fucking moron who should have guessed by the blobs you drew on a napkin as your layout.

Fuck AI; I see the benefits of it for smaller things like content aware fill to add a bit more height to a stock photo I'm using, or the smart-select to route a photo faster, but literally that's all I see useful for it.

I know there's loads more I'm missing, but I've seen SO much that I'm numb to a lot of things and tend to just "autocorrect" stuff without even thinking anymore.

I love my job though, I really do. The joke in my industry is that "I get paid to play in Photoshop all day long" and there is some truth to it after doing this for nearly 20 years. But I wish people would understand that we are trained professionals who want to make them look good, and to do that I need time and money. We are literally background characters for the main protagonists, and the pay isn't great unless you're really lucky (which I am, but it took me 12 years to finally get in where I am), and I wish people would stop saying my job is easy.

It literally is not. Think of it as retail, but you deal with the same people every single day nitpicking the tiniest things over and over again despite you telling them countless times that 6pt font is probably the smallest you should go, but no 3 pt must be on this ad.

Anyway. 🙃

My favourite though is Layout Design. I love designing the booklets and mailers we do at my job, because I get to be super creative. My boss is pretty lenient with me, since "you've been here longer than all of us, you know better than me how this works", so I get to have fun.
