#Human rights belong to everyone. I don't defend them for just people who like me. Neither should anyone.
#We can't support the idea that one group is an accepted scapegoat for everything like many do for example by using fat as a derogatory term.
#You not understanding something doesn't make it useless. A very common example, you don't need to understand neopronouns, people still deserve to have language for their identity.
#Asking for rights isn't asking for more than you got. Even if you are miserable, you aren't owed someone else's unhappiness.
#These basic ideas can help in other areas of life.
#Understanding that you don't need to be consulted on everything others are doing, helps.
#Thinking of other people deeper than as competitors will get you more friends than constantly challenging their being through your narrow broken lense.
no, you don't have to be kind to bad people - but you shouldn't be bigoted. not only because your bigotry will inadvertently hurt good people, but because discrimination! is! wrong! it doesn't matter who's at the receiving end; you should never resort to that.
you can criticise & even insult someone without making unwarranted comments about their appearance, race, ethnicity, sexuality, identity, etc. we really must examine why some of you are so intolerant in your attempts to make the world a tolerant place.

SlightlyHowling.net: "Poetry – Howling at The Void 2".
This is probably way too much poetry, even for poetry fans. They are rescued from my social media account (Tw), which I am closing down.

While I am working to relaunch my blog, I have rescued these poems from it's previous incarnation. They were made based on prompts on social media. Enjoy. (pic by me) https://slightlyhowling.net/posts/poetry-howling-at-the-void-1/

This post about Good Omens and Neil's work (and Terry's) in general hit home for me.
Good Omens has been my favourite book for ages. It, Graveyard book and Discworld kept me going during the worst time of my life.
I actually was wondering whether this was my ask to Neil, because some of the wording was so similar. Sandman was my first Gaiman thing a while before I found Discworld. I'm in my forties, so this was over 20 years ago.
My lifelong depression culminated into a full on burnout, when I was 32. A lot of my time as a kid was spent reading, it kept me going during difficult school years being bullied. But burn out, and the bad years before it, took my will to read, away.
Then I realised, I can still read Good Omens and Discworld. It was when I read The Graveyard book. I was in bed for two years, only going to therapy once a week, but I got through it. I'm still on sick pension, but I get out of bed, I'm talking to people, living my life. I have hope.
When I got astigmatism, reading got hard physically, too. Luckily I realised audio books really work for me. Now I have been listening to the amazing Sandman audio plays. I'm listening to several novels weekly.
Terry and Neil both express views of the world, and people, that give me hope. Laughing at Good Omens gets me feeling like humans are, in the end, worth it. Their views compliment each other in light and dark, gray and colorful ways, which I really relate to. Thanks for giving us those moments of wonder and relief.
Hi Neil,
This is not really a question but I would like to share with you what you mean for me.
A long time ago I used to write, I used to draw, I used to sing, I used to laugh hard and enjoy it.. and lost all of this along the years.
It was difficult for me to find that spark and enjoy life again... and then here you come.
I have seen and heard your name multiple times in the past, knowing you for the person behind Sandman but nothing more. One day like another I bumped in Good Omes.. not sure why I started to watch it and when I saw yours and Terry Pratchet name, something clicked in my head (heart?). I loved it immediately, I could feel a connection with someone again.  Long story short.. I can feel emotions again.  When I read (your) books, listen to a song or watch a movie, I can feel things, and there are no words in the entire world to thank you enough for this.
And I allow myself to take this a sign: last week I was in a tiny public library (a dutch one as I am Italian gal relocated in The Netherlands) trying to inspire my youngest daughter love for reading when I saw this little book on the shelf. Can you imagine my surprise to find an English book amongst thousands of dutch ones? I took it, read it and loved it. I know you're peculiarly ubiquitous and it's like you were there for me, saying to carry on, don't give up!
Thanks again, Neil!  💙

That warms my heart.
