Bucky and Alpine Settling Into Their New Life

surprisingly, Bucky settles into a routine with Alpine quite quickly

fatherhood agrees with him apparently

of course he doesn't realise it, he just assumes it's due to his ability to improvise and accommodate sudden changes

a condition that had been programmed into him

after all he had missions to complete

when it came to Alpine and their new routine however, he had to create a few new rules for them

since he broke two of his first set of rules by letting Alpine into his place that first night

no regrets from the assassin though

the first rule was that on a night time, she HAD to sleep separate from him

she wasn't too sure of the reasoning and had frowned up at him when he told her this rule

she just found someone she found comfort in and was feeling a little clingy

she's a neglected child - she'd never felt that feeling before and craved more of it like the sweet little angel baby she is

"But... why? Did I do something wrong Bucky? I'm sorry..."

"No, no. You didn't so anything wrong, Alpine. It's just... you remember what I told you? About me?"

now, Bucky had been very clear with Alpine about his situation - kind off

he told her what he though she'd understand, that both the good guys (police, Captain America, etc.) and the bad guys (HYDRA, literally every underground criminal boss and politician, etc) were are him

when she'd asked why

he'd told her that he had someone else in his mind, someone who would take over sometimes and be very mean and hurtful to anyone who he needed to

Bucky is trying his absolute hardest not to further traumatise the child okay

the image of a mean man possibly shouting at her seemed a lot better than a monster with his face who wouldn't think twice about hurting her

"That a lot of men were after you?"

"That and the other thing..."

Alpine frowns, she'd hated the fact that Bucky said someone else had been in his mind

not only did it not sound fun

but it meant she'd have to SHARE Bucky

and she didn't want to share him

"About the really mean man in your mind?"

"Exactly. Well, if he comes out, which he shouldn't, but just in case, then I need you to be in a different room from him at all times. Okay? Especially when you're sleeping."

where she'd be most vulnerable to the Soldier

he'd take her out and she wouldn't even been able to defend herself

this was a nightmare that had plagued Bucky the first few nights of Alpine staying with him

each time it happened, he'd gone into her room and perched himself on the edge of the mattress

he just needed to make sure she was safe

he'd watch her breathe for a few minutes before he finally felt comfortable enough that she was safe before returning to the couch for another restless night

"And besides, having your own room means that you get privacy."

"Privacy?"

"Yeah! Time to yourself, where you can just be on your own."

Alpine despises that idea

"But... I'm always on my own..."

he had sighed and kneeled down to be at her height as he often does, not wanting to scare her

"How about this, the only time you have to be on your own, is when you go to bed at the end of the day. You'll be asleep anyway and it'll go by so quick you won't even have time to miss me."

"What if I can't sleep?"

"Then you can stay up with me until you feel sleepy. But you have to sleep in your room. Deal?"

she had reluctantly agreed to this rule, but that didn't mean she didn't try to get her own way sometimes

she'd fall asleep on the couch, claiming not to be tired, only to wake up in her room and Bucky greets her the next morning with a 'nice try kid'

the second rule, was that she didn't have to do anything but be a kid

literally anything

no cleaning (on her own - she likes to help Bucky)

no shopping on her own

no going downstairs just to collect the mail (not that Bucky ever got any mail, he just wanted her to stop going down the stairs without him)

when alpine found out about Bucky not getting any mail, she was sad for him

that was the only form of communication she knew

and she actually got very excited when she saw mail in their letterbox back in her old home even if it wasn't for her

so, she started drawing Bucky pictures and she'd put some of them in the mail box so he'd have something

he didn't realise until he saw the paper sticking out of the lock box and had to dig out the key just to find an actual mountain of drawings and pages from the colouring books he'd half stolen half bought for her

he'd looked through them all that night and put his favourites into his journal, letting Alpine 'decorate' with the rest

he checks the mail everyday and finds new drawings - he's starting to wonder where he'd going to put them all

but altogether, he just want's Alpine to be a kid

she deserves that at least

the third rule, she'd have to start doing a bit of home schooling

with her illness, which was still undiagnosed and bothering Bucky to no end because at the very least he knew it affected her breathing, they couldn't keep going out everyday

it didn't help that he was on the run either, so when they did go out, he wanted to be quick

which was not possible when you've got a 12 year old who had a coughing fit every 10 minutes because they were breathing too hard

most of the time Bucky carried her on his back if they were in a real rush, other times he didn't mind waiting until she stopped

always has a bottle of water and an inhaler in his bag for her

and some snacks (usually plums)

and plasters designed with the avengers because she liked them (she asks for Thor always without fail)

and a hair brush because ever since they managed to get her hair under control, Bucky refuses to let it fall back into disarray - will always pull her aside to brush and tie it up when they're actually out and about and it becomes suddenly very windy

he's just super prepared for her and does it without really thinking

the fourth and final rule he had set, was she had to follow an 'escape plan'

of course, she didn't know what it was

but he prepared her for a situation where she would no longer be safe in their home

or for a situation where they needed to leave Budapest quickly

or the exact same situation as above but with a little more fighting with the authorities and Captain America (thanks zemo)

in the first situation, she was to lock herself in her room - buy herself more time since he'd have to break down the door which he had reinforced with locks and thicker, stronger wood all of which were stolen or obtained through less than legal means

when he inevitably broke through, she'd blind him with pepper spray (stolen) or wound him with one of the knifes he'd stashed in her room (he'd been very hesitant to put it in there but his need to keep her safe outweighed the need to be a logical father) before pulling the fire alarm, running and contacting the American authorities and telling them that the 'Winter Soldier was active'

she had to say those exact words because otherwise the Avengers would not come

he could only hope that whoever got a hold of him didn't make her his mission, and that she would be able to get away from him unharmed

in the second instance, Bucky had spent months preparing three emergency kits for the two of them - one for him and two for her. if they had to leave Budapest suddenly, then they would grab the two kits hidden within the apartment and run.

They'd find (steal) transport along the way and make their way out of the country and into several more before making their home somewhere else

the third instance involved the same premise, except the two would separate - Bucky would go back to the apartment, grab the kit made for him and anything else they would need whilst Alpine headed for a different spot for the third bag that Bucky had hidden away from the apartment and away from any fighting that may occur. They would then meet at the edge of the city where they'd call out their little codeword 'pruna' (plum in Romanian because Alpine fucking loves plums) and continue with the plan.

What Bucky didn't tell Alpine, however, was that if the people on their tail were a bit more dangerous than the regular authorities (for example, HYDRA), then he would contact American authorities, hopefully before HYDRA got to him, and tell them to send Captain America to Alpine's location, where she would hopefully be picked up and cared for

a lot of it was hoping that Steve would not send Alpine back to live with her parents

but he had hope that Alpine wouldn't shy away from telling him that Bucky had basically adopted her and Steve would immediately take her in himself because that man had quite literally refused to fight him and nearly died because of it

but he was hoping that day would never come (again, thanks zemo)

so far, they had been able to follow the four rules perfectly

Alpine still struggled to be a kid sometimes because she had so much responsibility on her shoulders for keeping herself and her parents alive

she just didn't know how to be a child

but that was okay because Bucky was slowly teaching her what was her responsibility and what was his

like dinner

honestly, Bucky thought he'd struggle when it came to meals and looking after Alpine

he survived on breakfast bars and fruit

barely had any real food, it was a miracle he had any rice or pasta let alone a sauce, seasoning or even veg and meat to go with it

he was living off limited funds

why do you think most of the stuff he and Alpine owned was stolen?

but after taking Alpine in, he made sure to get proper meals and tried even harder to make sure they weren't cheap microwave meals despite how desperately low they were for funds

but he never let's her start the morning without a breakfast and never let's her go to bed without a dinner

because she never really got a lot of food in the first place, her stomach wasn't used to a lot of food, which Bucky took full advantage of

if they had a big breakfast, they'd have a small dinner. A small breakfast then they'd make up for it with dinner

a lot of the times, breakfast was already on the table when Alpine woke up and she'd wonder out, half awake and muttering a greeting to Bucky before she's sitting at their table and falling asleep in her bowl of cereal

on one occasion did Alpine actually make them breakfast and Bucky pretended to be asleep on the couch so that she could surprise him

she had tried so hard to be quiet but the plates were up high and the fridge door was heavy so needed a good hard pull most times to open it, which would make everything else on top rattle

he'd opened one eye to make sure nothing had fallen on her before returning to his fact slumber

let her wake him up and acted surprised at the food in front of him

"Aw, thanks sweetheart. You didn't have to."

he'd make a big show out of eating the nearly raw egg and burnt toast and enjoying it

when it came to dinner, Bucky always cooked it

always

but Alpine would help out

he'd used it as a way to train her to use a knife without actually teaching her how to

taught her how to cute up veg and meats, showed her how easy a sharp knife glides through whilst the dull knifes are basically useless

let's her stir the pots on the stove but is very careful she doesn't get burnt

he'll get her to set the table whilst he's dishing up their plates (hers often slightly bigger)

eats her left overs when he's absolutely sure she doesn't want it

they don't eat lunch often

but they'll always snack on fruits throughout the day

honestly, Alpine lived on junk, stolen goods and poorly cooked food in her old home

with Bucky not only was she treated like a princess but she also lives on fresh fruits from the market which she no longer had to steal

but that didn't mean she didn't pick up on a few tricks

our girl is a little pickpocket and a damn good one now thanks to Bucky

not his proudest dad moment

but a proud moment as a mentor nonetheless

especially when she managed to steal enough cash for their shopping for a month

"Look at it!"

"Holy shi- Good job kid! Should send you in more often, huh?"

"You should? Are you missing your keys Bucky?"

"What no- Hey!"

honestly, she steals from him the most just because she finds it funny

mostly his door key, she likes making him look for it for a couple of minutes before telling him

little mischief maker (Bucky occasionally, affectionately calls her 'Bucluc' - Romanian for trouble/mischief)

whilst he'd pretty proud of her skills as a thief, he's actually most proud of her health

she's glowing now that she's actually being taken care of

but his proudest achievement is her hair

after years of matting, dirt, grime and grease in her hair, a few weeks of hard work and a lot

A LOT

of conditioning later

her hair was silky smooth

long and healthy if not without it's split ends

he's so proud of his efforts

honestly, her face when he'd detangled the last knot and washed and dried her hair

she was smiling so damn hard

playing with her hair

learning how to braid it (Bucky taught her)

tying it up in all sorts of ways

honestly, she's never been able to do anything with her hair and both of them are surprised by how long it actually was

Bucky makes a habit out of brushing her hair every night

it's oddly soothing for him and it becomes apart of their night time routine

Bucky will do his usual checks of the windows, making sure there no preventable surprises waiting for them before sending Alpine to get ready for bed

she'll get changed into pj's (kindly donated by the new tenant a few floors down after Alpine told her 'daddy's too poor to get her a new set')

brush her teeth

climb into bed

or if Bucky and her had been play fighting before hand (it had taken a few months but eventually they became really comfortable with each other's touch and Alpine had initiated their first 'fight' by climbing on top of the fridge and jumping on him)

man had a fucking heart attack

he'll 'throw' her on the bed and do a 'finishing move' on her before he's grinning and telling her to go to sleep

"I won sweetheart, you'll get me next time I'm sure."

"nu-uh! I let you win!"

he swears a few months ago this kid was somewhat normal and now she's climbing onto furniture to try and choke him out

never uses a lot of force and will always stop when her breathing starts getting a bit ragged much to her dismay

but he always get's her to sit and he brushes through her hair at the end of the day, braiding it before bed so that it doesn't get too knotted when she sleeps

he'll tell her stories of his childhood

the ones he can remember

and she loves them, normally falls asleep to them

then he'll wish her sweet dreams before going to relax before his own bed time

this is normally when he'll write in his journal, think about his past, wonder if he ever had a family

normal depressive Bucky Barnes stuff to be honest

speaking of

man was distraught when he had to trim Alpine's hair

the same neighbour Alpine had tricked into getting her clothes had once caught Bucky and Alpine on their way back up the stairs from a trip to the market

to give them more clothes for Alpine, which Bucky had accepted, playing the part of grateful father who promised to pay her back

which she refused as a lot of them were hand-me-downs from her own kids

her and Bucky had been talking about Alpine's hair, because he LOVES talking about it

"A lot of hard work went into this, her mother wasn't very good at keeping on top of it."

"Ah, you and you're wife separate?"

"Yeah, she took everything but luckily I got Alpine."

"She's a little cutie. Have you though about cutting her hair?"

"No."

"Oh! She likes it this long?"

"Loves it."

"My daughter had it this long once, it was so annoying! Hair everywhere, in the end it just became so damaged that we had to cut it. Good thing too, her scalp was so irritated and sore from the weight of it too."

"Ah, I see. Well, I'll have to look at it closely tonight. Thanks for the clothes again, what do you say Alpine?"

"Thank you!"

he raised her with MANNERS

and the ability to steal

that night, he's sat on the couch, Alpine on the floor in front of him and he's just looking at her hair

fucking split ends

it's looking a little dry

you can just tell it's been through a lot

honestly he's conflicted but he wants to make her hair healthy!

so he proposes the idea to Alpine and at first she's like okay

but then, they're in the bathroom, Alpine stood on a chair in front of the mirror, Bucky behind her with Scissors and they're both very hesitant

"I've changed my mind I like my hair now!"

"Al, sweetheart, we need to cut it. It's not as healthy as we think."

"NO! I like my hair!"

"It'll grow back, babydoll, but we need to cut it so it can grow back healthy."

eventually she agrees

she's crying

but she agrees to cut it to her shoulders, were there was less damage and more healthy hair

Bucky hesitates, but want's to promote the growth

in the end, after it's cut he has to hug Alpine all night

which he doesn't complain about

she's devastated because she can't do cute long braids anymore and even Bucky struggles to do it before bed

it falls out during the night and Alpine cries to Bucky the next morning because of it

but he cleans up the hair he spent fucking weeks detangling and nearly tears up himself

doesn't regret it but goddamn it he was so damn proud of her hair

genuinely distraught he can't even complain about Alpine being clingy for the next few days because she's devastated

when they're not being dramatic though, both of them are actually very wholesome

we know Bucky tells her stories of his childhood which she basically eats up

but sometimes he just doesn't have the memories

so, he teaches her how to read and write

it takes a while, but he's determined

he takes her to the local library, cap on and keeping his head low

he initially sends her in on her own, telling her to ask the librarian for a library card in her name

she's shaking her head and clinging to Bucky's arm

"She'll laugh!"

"She won't laugh"

"She will, what if she asks how to spell my name?"

"Al-"

"Please Bucky..."

he tries his best not to fall for it

but she's got a good puppy dog face

checks how many people are in the building, two and they're both very old

perfect

so he guides her in, going straight up to the front desk and keeps his face as hidden as possible

he can feel her squeezing his hand

"Hi, can I get my daughter a card?"

"Of course! What's your name sweetheart?"

"Alpine, miss."

"Alright and your surname?"

Bucky answers

"Barnes. Alpine Barnes."

"Could you spell that for me dear?"

Alpine is sending him a look which he grins at because it's a happy, excited look mixed with an 'i told you so'.

spells it out for her and let's Alpine wonder off to look at the books whilst he's getting the card

leans in and whispers

"Sorry about this, but I just wanted to ask if you had any recommendations for children who struggle to read?"

she's nodding and whispering back to him, understanding that Alpine was very sensitive about it, telling him what stickers he needed to look out for and which to avoid

after a while of browsing, Bucky and Alpine had managed to get quite a few books which would help her and be a good starting point

she's basically dragging him home because she's so excited to start reading

regrets it so hard a few weeks later when they've progressed to a more difficult learning book and she can't understand it

sat at the dining table and banging her head on the table because she's so frustrated with it

"I hate this book."

"Yeah, well we're not going back a level so keep trying."

tries a few more times before she's groaning and pulling at her hair

Bucky sighs and leans into his chair, also frustrated

is he teaching her well enough?

maybe something less formal would help

a more relaxing environment

standing, he goes to the couch and pulls the cushions off, placing them on the floor

Alpine thinks he's annoyed at her and starts apologising but he ignores her

grabs blankets and more pillows, setting up a little space for them to lay down on

get's himself comfortable before patting the space next to him

"Bring the book and get over here, bucluc."

Alpine jumps right up

a chance to cuddle her adoptive father and break the first rule

hell yeah

gets herself comfortable, using his arm as a pillow but doesn't want to read

begs him not to make her

so he calms her down and reads instead

gets a few sentences in before he starts to 'struggle' on a word which he knows Alpine definitely knows how to read

she'll help him with the word and he'll thank her before continuing and getting stuck again

repeats a few times before she eventually takes over, reading word for word and getting stuck

he'll help her and she'll get back into a rhythm of reading until she's finished the book or fallen asleep (he'll move her to the bedroom and laugh at her grumpy face in the morning)

this is how he teaches her form this point on, she manages a lot better when they're relaxed and she's cuddling into him

fucking cutie

writing comes a lot easier to her, especially when she knows how to read and knows the sounds letters make

obviously she's learning Romanian, but Bucky teaches her English at least as a spoken language

he manages to find some books which help with the written language but she hates learning it even more

he's speaking in English a lot more around her as well which is so frustrating

"English is stupid."

"Well, you know that statement in both English and Romanian so I'm taking that as a win."

".... What?"

surprises him by speaking in Korean, which he genuinely did not think she knew but then again it made sense?

When he says something she doesn't understand, she'll say something in Korean

Bucky does not know Korean

but he knows Japanese

it makes for a very, extremely crude translation

honestly they're both very petty but at least they're bilingual

the first thing she writes is her full name

'Alpine Barnes'

she then writes Bucky's name

he keeps them in his diary with her drawings

Let's be honest, Alpine is learning so much with Bucky

how to read

how to write

in Romanian and English (he can't teach her Korean but he's added it to the list)

how to feed herself

how to prepare food

to know her own limits

how to take care of her hair (even though she cries every time she needs a trim)

how to steal

how to gaslight innocent neighbours into giving her clothing

how to stab a man or blind him

again, not his proudest father moments

but he'd do anything to keep her safe from harm

she deserves to be happy and although he feels like he's failing, she's always got a smile on her face and seems happy enough

so he'll keep doing what he's doing, despite it being less then conventional

of course he's worried, but it's safe today that he's starting to get used to being a family

he doesn't know what the future holds, but he'll damn sure fight for the privilege that will be watching Alpine grow into a healthy young adult

Alpine Joins The Howling Commandos

Peggy knew as soon as she met the other Howling Cammandos that they would be a rag-tag group of troublemakers for the SSR

as soon as she saw them in that bar

drunk off their asses and singing like the drunkards they are, not a care in the world

she just knew

so when Steve put together this team and she had gone for her own little investigation and seen there was no medic on said team

she realises that although Steve is courageous, brave, loyal and trust worthy

a good man

he was also a bloody idiot

so, she another little investigation and found a medic for the team

Steve can heal as fast as he likes but he still has teammates with regular healing abilities that may require medical assistance

now Peggy des have a little crush on America's Golden Boy (fucking understatement of the decade) so she's a little particular about the medic she chooses

she wants them to be well read, keeping up to date with all medical advancements that had been happening throughout the war

she wanted them to be quick on their feet and not scared to improvise - lord knows they'd have to do a lot of that with the new weaponry being built by HYDRA

so when she hears of Doctor Andrew Doe, a Korean-American doctor making a name for himself in the front lines by experimenting and sharing his findings with the allied forces

she knows that this is the guy

imagine her surprise when she gets to the bases records show he's supposed to be in to find him gone

she'd managed to get a hold of someone, a young man looking as if he were in a rush but not wanting to be rude to the pretty lady who had ordered him to stand at attention

"Where is Dr Doe, I need to speak with him."

"I'm sorry ma'am, he died a few days ago."

well shit

there goes that plan

"His daughter has taken over his research and then some. Names Miss Alpine Doe. She's young looking, but the document's are legitimate."

oh great

so now her option is a young looking girl who needed her documents checking

just fantastic

how could it get worse?

"How young?"

"Certificate says 18 years ma'am."

a fucking child

brilliant

"Well then. Do you know where she is?"

"Yes ma'am, she was called out to one of the nearby bunkers, they got wound-"

a buzzing interrupts them, the unmistakable sounds of a siren and a vehicle honking as men surrounding them rush to the open area

the truck skids to a halt and the back doors burst open, a young girl climbing out and beginning to pull a stretcher out

"Get me plasma, bandages and morphine. I need as much as we can spare, poor bastard got shot to bits, lucky to be alive right now. Let's get him stable and home to his ma."

surprise was not the word Peggy would use to describe her current emotions, watching this definitely not 18 year old girl work and order the much older men surrounding her

and they listened

"Miss Doe has worked on all of us, ma'am"

it's the young man she'd caught before hand, she turns to look at him and he's got an awestruck look on his face

"Most of us came here wounded, Miss Doe saved most of our lives or at least stabilised us so we could get home to a hospital. She's a fine medic, if that's what you're looking for."

Peggy watches as Alpine and a few of the other men begin to walk back into one of the many tents which held beds for the injured

she can't get far though, before another two trucks come blaring through

perhaps this would be the perfect test

Peggy watches as Alpine assesses her situation, getting a nearby medic to hold the wound she had been previously, running to the first of the trucks

"GSW, left shoulder, straight through."

she turns to the second

"It's bad miss, explosive went off nearby, leg's basically gone."

tutting, she turns back to the tent just as two teams of three come racing out

"Philips, take the first one. Multiple GSW's, three exits. Find the shrapnel, get it out, get him stitched. Taylor, take the second. You,"

She turns to Peggy, a hard look in her eyes

"Get lost or start helping."

the fucking audacity of this kid, does she know who she's talking to

no absolutely not

does she care

fuck no

is Peggy equip to be a medic?

no, but does that mean she'll sit and let men die?

definitely not, so, she shucks off her coat, rolls up her sleeve and let's alpine guide her into help

and boy is that girl fucking bossy

and mean

"Press harder Carter, jesus do you want this man to bleed out?"

"The man's just lost his leg, give him the bloody painkiller!"

"They should make basic first aid a mandatory skill to learn when you become an agent. Oh wait, they do."

"Carter you're not wrapping a Christmas present for gods sake, faster!"

by the end of it, Peggy is pretty sure she's picked the right person for the job

if anyone was going to be giving medical aid to a group of sarcastic, stupidly cheery and sometimes grumpy men then it should be at least someone who could hold their own

so when all is said and done, they'd managed to get the poor man stabilised and Alpine was organising his immediate transfer out of the unit and to an actual hospital, Peggy approaches

"Miss Doe, I have a proposition for you."

"Unless it's to do with shipments of morphine, plasma, bandages, gauzes, tunicates and all the other supplies I've been badgering everyone about, I'm not intrested."

"I'd like to offer you a position in the Howling Commandos. You'll be working with Captain America, Steve Rogers and his team."

Alpine blinks at her

staring

not moving

before she gestures to the space around her

"I've got men dying as we speak and you want me to drop them just to work with a lab rat and his crew?"

"They need a medic, you are the only one qualified enough. I didn't know about your father, I'm sorry for your loss, but please do not let this be a wasted journey."

Alpine's eye twitches

"You helped save a man and it's a wasted journey?"

Peggy sighs and shakes her head, clearly she's approaching this girl wrong

"I'm simply saying- this isn't the opportunity to skip out on, especially for someone like you."

Alpine knows she's speaking of not only her age but also gender

this was the 1940s after all, not exactly the golden era for women in the military

"You're incredibly talented. Captain Rogers and his team need someone like that to keep up with their absolute stupidity."

Alpine laughs, signing the papers she'd been working on and handing them to one of her colleagues before looking at Peggy and offering a smile

"I'm sorry Agent Carter. I made a promise to my eldest brother. No working with Captain America. After what happened with the 107th and the other forces, he's been a bit protective - as much as he can from the front lines. I'm afraid I can't go against my promise to him."

Peggy nods but takes a slip of paper and writes the details she'd need to contact her and hands it to her

"Please, if you change your mind before the war is done, don't hesitate to contact this number."

Alpine nods and the two separate, Alpine returning to her work in the bloodied clothing she'd arrived in and Peggy feeling like she needed a bath after helping remove a man's leg and stitch it up again

it's weeks later when Alpine contacts the number, she'd refused to give any details to the receptionist who picked up but instead managed to organise a way to their base in London

to say Peggy was shocked was an understatement

The Howling Commandos had all come into the meeting room for their first debriefing after destroying the first HYDRA base on Steve's list

and the need for a medic had never been more obvious

Dum Dum had a large gash on his arm and had refused to seek medical assistance, instead stating that it was 'just a graze, it'll heal over night'

absolute bullshit

even Bucky had told him to get help but the man refused, Steve had suggested getting it checked out before the briefing, just to get Peggy off their back (to ease her concerns) and again Dum Dum had refused

imagine the absolute rage on Peggy's face

honestly, these men were the reason's she'd found a grey hair that morning she was sure of it

not that she'd ever mention anything to anyone

She was about to order the man to seek help when the door to the briefing room opened to reveal a worn out Alpine

covered in less blood than when Peggy had left her, eyes darkened with loss and large bags settling in her undereye

her hands were dirty, holding tightly onto two letters, and she looked frailer

"Sorry for the interruption Agent Carter, but she said she had an appointment and insisted-"

"It's quite alright. Miss Doe is a friend."

as she moves closer to the girl, the rest of the men surrounding them take the opportunity to study her

and bucky is in shock

what the hell is a child doing in their briefing room?

seriously, she was what 16? (15 - but he didn't need to know that)

she's there, blood splattered on her sleeves, dirt in her nails and her hair thrown up in a ratty bun

she looked like she came straight from the front lines

but she should have been at home

with her parents

why the hell, was she here?

"I'd like to take you up on your offer, Agent Carter."

Jesus even her fucking voice was a tell-tale sound that she was underaged

and Peggy had made her an offer?

for what?

"I take it your brother changed his mind?"

ah so she had a guardian at least

"My brother died, ma'am."

there's a shared moment of silence for the loss before Alpine is looking up and trying to smile at her

"So, if your offer still stands, I'd like to take it."

Alpine spies Dum Dum's arm and thanks god that she carries a satchel of supplies with her everywhere

she'd sold rations for them and was sure she got some odd looks off of people for it but she didn't care

better safe than sorry

Peggy gives her arm a gentle touch before turning to address the men who had been staring at her, a pissed off Bucky included

"Gentlemen, this is Alpine Doe. A little younger then you're all used to-" bucky scoffs, Steve elbows him "-but a great medic nonetheless! She'll be joining you, no arguments."

her words are final and the rest of the team seem fine with it

they jump up, everyone greeting and shaking her hand

normally she'd love meeting people who weren't screaming in her face, but she can't bring herself to truly enjoy the moment, despite the pleasant smiles and pats on her shoulders

Steve offers his hand and she takes it, smiling at him

"Good to have you. We'll take good care you you, like you will us I'm sure."

Bucky is glaring at all of them

they're all idiots

he knew that but jesus

are they truly THIS stupid?

"Are we ignoring the fact that she's an actual child?"

he didn't realise he spoke

truly

he thought he'd spoken to himself

but it came out

and it came out harsher than what he would have liked it

no stopping now, someone had to stand up for the kid

her brother obviously didn't want her here

"I'm 18, Sergeant Barnes."

"And I'm the King of England."

they stare at each other, glaring really

Bucky can see the tears building in Alpine's eyes

he didn't think he was pushing too much

but then again

he doesn't push too hard after seeing the tears, actually takes a minute step to comfort her before she's turning her attention to where Dum Dum had sat, now tending to the gash on his arm

distracting herself from the overwhelming frustration building in her stomach

Bucky turns to Phillips

"You're signing off on a kid working with us? Going into HYDRA bases? With their weapons, what's the use of a medic?"

Phillips sighs and shakes his head, frustrated with the entire situation to be honest

"You're still using regular explosives, regular bullets. They ricochet, debris exists, you get a cold, she's there to keep you healthy and on your feet."

"Now, because she's a medic, she'll be a non-combatant member of the Howling Commandos, the only one."

Alpine goes to correct him, but he points an accusatory finger at her that shuts her up because it reminds her of her brother

"She's done it before Sergeant, now one more outburst from you and I'll be forced to take disciplinary action!"

Steve elbows him again and he shuts up

he wants to fight for this girl but can't let Steve go out there alone

he hates the fact that this girl is clearly in over her head

and everyone is just letting her

it reminds him of the Steve he knew before the serum

the one who would stop at nothing to get into the war

the one who faced prison for lying on his enlistment papers

was he truly the only person who saw this all for what it was?

the leading of a lamb to slaughter for their own goddamn advantage

that much was shown when they moved out to their next base after the debrief

Alpine had avoided them all after patching up Dum Dum, whose arm had healed beautifully

she went straight home after the meeting and only saw them all again when they were meeting for the plane back abroad

even then, she kept to herself and refused to speak

Bucky would glance over occasionally from where they sat on the plane, watching her read and re-read the same two letters in her hands which she carried in her pockets when her hands were busy working

Steve had sat next to her, trying to coax her into a gentle conversation but she'd answered with little words and left not room for the conversation to continue

when she wasn't reading the letters or working on someone, she was writing in a little blue journal, with a black journal open and glancing between them both

she'd scribble in the black one occasionally but for the most part, the blue journal was the only one she wrote in

what she was doing Bucky didn't know

but it was clear it was important to her

occasionally the others would tease her, trying to get her to open up

but again, they were being blind to the truth about this girl

she was a child and she was grieving

he could see it in the way she's hold her breath when she read the letters

wiping away unshed tears and pulling at her hair

Bucky sighs, nodding to Steve and making him swap seats with him in the tight aircraft, causing everyone to glance up at them

he settles next to Alpine, nudging her when he sat and played it off like he hadn't noticed

if no one else was going to support her

Alpine 'introducing' Bucky to music (AKA. Alpine Aggressively Breaking Out Into Song)

Alpine is little ball of sunshine and the type of person who uses music to reflect her mood

she has a little collection of speakers that she uses, each with their different strength

bucky normally hears it before he gets out the lift to their floor

its nice

it gives him a clue as to how Alpine's day was

and it's a regular thing to expect

if bucky had one complaint

just one

it would be that Alpine HAS to sing the songs

she wasn't a bad singer

no she was pretty good to be honest

it was that it was always so aggressive

it could be a love song and she's staring him down aggressively singing her feelings towards him

she's emotionally constipated in that department so it's the only time she actually has the guts to do it

the first instance of her aggressive love was a few days after they'd officially met

bucky was still going to therapy at this stage and to be honest he fucking needed it after this incident

he had just been watching tv in his bare ass apartment, sat on the floor when he heard the undeniable thump thump of one of Alpine's speakers coming through the door

Alpine ever the respectful young adult came barging in, a small portable speaker in her hand, oversized clothing and messy ass hair

she's obviously having a grand time, singing her songs and Bucky had stood up so quickly by now

she had warned him that now they were 'friends', she'd be barging in on him

to which he replied

"I will kill you."

and she simply said

"Bet"

now he hadn't actually done anything, only been ready to defend himself

every time it happened, he was worried he's on day actually hurt her

this girl fucking laughs whenever he gets in a defensive stance and claimed its 'exposure therapy' - bullshit he'd checked with his therapist but she was no help because she just teased him about having a soft spot for the youth

Alpine had been cleaning her place, when 'Unwritten' by Natasha Bedingfield came blaring through her speakers

she listened to the full song first, happily singing and cleaning when she wondered how Bucky would react to the happy tune

this man is so grumpy and hates life and people - he needs to feel the rain on his skin (pun definitely intended)

so rather than politely recommend the song

Alpine will force this poor man to listen to her song recommendations

Alpine has to buy dinner as an apology

Bucky defo tells Raynor in their next session

something that she can never forget or get out of her head if it randomly shuffles onto her playlist

one Halloween, Alpine and her friends decided to dress up as Bucky, Sam and Steve for their party

since it was hosted at Alpine's place, Sam and Bucky decided to pop over

Sam wanted to show Bucky what a party of a twenty year old looked like in the 21st century

man was traumatised

Sam was laughing so fucking hard, he thought his lungs would actually collapse

he would love to die right now

especially with Sam asking him if he'd been a bad girl

if the ground swallowed him up right now

he would be happy

Sam decides that he too could die after Alpine's friend joins her on the table, hand on her hip as they start shouting those god damn woo hoo's

it was on this day that Bucky decided that he wasn't particularly fond of this song

But Sam has already made it his ringtone and has a picture of a drunk, smiling Alpine dressed in this Halloween costume hugging a less than impressed but soft Bucky set as his profile picture.

the song came on again later in the night after the party had ended, leaving the trio and Alpine had convinced Sam to sing it with her

they gave Bucky a concert which he loved (despised)

he is still heavily traumatised from seeing a female version of himself screaming these lyrics

used it as blackmail against Sam

now Alpine adores upbeat, songs that she can sing and dance to

she will dance in the street quite happily (she's got the scary guard dog privilege that is Bucky Barnes)

but if theres one thing that would drive her

she could be having a great day

her relationships are going great

she got a promotion

she's making bank

it doesn't matter how good the day is going

suddenly she's just come home from a war that she's barely made it out alive from

her boyfriend of 5 years has cheated on her and she's been kicked out of her apartment

this girl sings the heartbreak like it's actually happening

These are the times that Bucky is actually worried that he's befriended a psychopath

it'll be a normal day, Bucky would be coming back from morning run

he'd introduced it just to get some sort of routine in his day

catching his breath, he'd do a little knock on Alpine's door before turning to unlock his own door

they'd started knocking to let the other know if they were leaving or if they were back from a place

they can't really place when they started it - but it made them both relax knowing that the other got home safely

Alpine, ever the nosey neighbour, opens the door

headphones on, shouting right at the poor man

"WE COULD HAVE HAD IT AAALLLL!"

the neighbours are looking out their door wondering who let the young girl move in

she was normal before Barnes moved in

that's a lie, she was just anti-social

and she stole most of their coupons so no wonder her neighbours didn't talk to her

and god forbid she go through an actual break up

she's this annoying with imagined scenarios, imagine if someone actually cheated on her or broke up with her just out of the blue

she's lying on the floor, staring at the ceiling singing her feels until her friends have to call Bucky in because none of their tactics are working

this is the ONLY time Bucky will actually play any of her music

she is definitely a swiftie, i feel like she has a specific playlist just for her taylor moments

she tries to get Bucky into it but he likes 40s music

also tries to get Sam into it and it works

he's a secret swiftie and no one can tell me otherwise

most of the songs she pushes onto Bucky are Taylor Swift songs, they're the ones that get stuck in her head the most often

she also requests them when she's drunk so you can imagine Sam driving her and Bucky back to their hotel after a Wilson cookout

she definitely had a few too many, requesting Taylor Swift the whole way back

Bucky is shaking his head because he imagines this is what looking after an actual child is like

Sam relents, starts playing her playlist

Alpine is loving life, drunk in the back of the car, in her feels and little imaginary scenarios that surface whenever she listens to music

Bucky has to physically take a breath, watching her in shock and amusement as she belts they lyrics out, drunk out of her mind

he is definitely impressed in times like this

but it's also times like this where he gets headaches and songs stuck in his head because Alpine doesn't shut up when she's drunk

honestly, she's awful (more on that later)

but he like's this version more than any other version of drunk Alpine

her other songs of choice include a lot of suggestive songs

surprisingly, they've have had long drunken discussions about these songs

shes drunk

he's unfortunately sober, wishing he had some of that good asgardian alcohol

"So he's saying he could fuck 24/7, seven days a week, which is why I think he's actually a super soldier."

"There are only two super soldier's in the world kid, you're looking at one of them." And i'm not sharing any aspect of my sex life with you."

Bucky is watching TV, wondering what he should order for their dinner because he didn't want to cook and Alpine had cooked for them their other night

it's a nice sense of peace for Bucky

it feels like home

especially when Alpine starts singing softly

he prefers these moments

as said before, Alpine isn't a bad singer, she's good

and Bucky finds her voice soothing

especially when she's singing the slower, heart warming songs that don't stress too much on her vocals

so when she started singing to the song playing through her head phones softly, he closed his eyes and just listened

she'd noticed, disconnected her headphones so he could hear the notes

"And I thank God everyday, for the girl he sent my way..."

Oddly, Bucky connects ot it

its a song about romance, but he things of his relationship with Alpine

what they had was a family bond and he'd do anything to protect it

most nights he found himself thanking his lucky starts for his little neighbour

"But i know the things he gives me.... he can take away..."

that was definitely something Bucky was worried about, something he dreaded would happen.

it was why he was so protective of her

"And I hold you everynight.... that's a feeling i wanna get used to... but there's no man as terrified as the man who stands to lose you..."

oh wow Bucky definitely relates to this song

it's nice

for once he understands the songs she's singing

and its a nice, calm, serene song

he's looking forward to the rest of it

Alpine has a little grin on her face, not that he can see it

"mmm... Please.... stay..."

her voice changes

it's slightly deeper and she sounds more troubled than before

Bucky opens his eyes and glances at her

"THESE BEAUTIFUL THINGS THAT I'VE GOT"

she stands and starts mimicking the guitar aggressively, pointing to Bucky

"I WANT YOU I NEED YOU OH GOD. DON'T TAKE THESE BEAUTIFUL THINGS THATS IVE GOT!"

Bucky is grinning and laughing

it's the only time he's truly, truly enjoyed her dramatics, despite the screaming at him

Alpine is grinning at him, jumping up on his new couch next to him singing those high notes before falling to her knees next to him and grabbing his arm as she finished the song

he applauds her and she bows

yeah, he enjoys those moments

until she charges him for the private show

"$50!? it was one song!"

"i did choreography and everything"

he doesn't pay, obviously but she's takes payment in the form of the dinner she was already getting so-

at the end of the day, Alpine is a child at heart

she get's excited and loves to express her self

unlike a certain super soldier

so her introducing him to modern music normally turns into him getting it stuck in his head because she's been replaying the same song for around 2 hours doing a task

or because she's singing at the top of her lungs

as much as he isn't a fan of 21st century music, he loves watching the little performances of Alpine and occasionally Sam

and yes, whilst he may be tempted to join them, he would rather die

he handles the instrumental versions of things extremely well

Lyrics can be lost on him sometimes.

but he does get his chance to join in though because she adds some 40s style music to her playlists for him, and when he hears that he often brings her in for a dance when it's been a particularly good day

sometimes, very oftenly so, if a modern song carries the same tune and tempo, he'll carry on the dance

"Oh ho! Wait until Sam hears about this. Bucky Barnes dancing to modern music!"

"Go ahead, he'll never believe you."

denies it every happened when she tells Sam at their next family dinner

"I swear he danced!"

The Winter Soldier meets his ...Daughter?

He wasn't sure what he had done differently this time but his handlers had become tense in their ride back to their base

they remained tense as they exited the vehicle and lead him down a familiar set of rooms

normally, he is given his mission, he completes it, goes for a debrief and is then placed back in cryo or in a small holding cell if he will be needed in the immediate future

most times he is wiped before being frozen once again

this time just felt different however

and he just wasn't sure why

was it because he had failed?

it couldn't have been the case, he always completed his missions

always

perhaps there had been a witness left?

no, it was an isolated location, any and all cameras had been dealt with by him or other HYDRA agents prior to the mission

could it be that they know about his memories returning once again?

yes, that must be it

they always seem to know when his memories begin to filter through the mist of his brain

they never made any sense of course, but they were there

and he thinks they were his

it was hard to tell sometimes, it always felt as through he were watching it in third person

it was clear that something was bothering his handlers, even after they strapped him to the chair

after the debrief

and after the electric was sent through his skull

when he awoke from the haze, Alexander Pierce stood before him

"Well done. We have a surprise for you."

the Soldier's face remains blank as he stands, guided by the many doctors and agents in the room to follow Pierce through the compound

every turn and staircase brought familiar memories of the area

well, not memories - but his body remembered the layout even if his mind did not after the recent wiping

eventually however, they got to a part of the base that he had never been able to venture

not that he was open to explore the area anyway

it wasn't heavily guarded, one guard positioned as the initial gate to the ward

another further down the corridor about halfway

as Pierce led the group down the corridor, one of the doctors rushed to begin walking next to him

"Sir, are we sure this is a good idea? We have no idea how the asset will react. We don't know if he will become unstable. We should introduce them gradually."

Pierce sent him a look which made the doctor calm his persistence

"Don't tell me you're starting to care now."

the doctor scoffs

"Not about her. It's the Asset's behaviour I am concerned over."

Said Asset could not care less about any surprise

he just wanted to rest for once

at least in cryo he wasn't poked and prodded with machines that kept changing through the decades

he swore the needles got bigger each time

and the electricity seemed to just get stronger

Pierce had seemed to calm the doctor's nerves, but the rest of the HYDRA Agents were still tense

whatever this surprise was, they thought it would send him into a rage

that much was clear

But the soldier had learnt the hard way that despite all his super strength, there was nothing he could do so fight HYDRA

they'd have the upper hand, always

and he had nothing to fight for

even if he did, he didn't remember them

finally, when they reached the last room in the corridor, a final guard nodded to the group before banging on the metal door he had been guarding

the soldier heard shuffling from the other side of the door but couldn't make anything else out as Pierce swiped a card and the heavy metal lock released with a load clunk

the door swung open on it's own and light filled the otherwise dark room

it was dirty

it was small

it was wet?

he hated this surprise

Pierce also seems to hate it, glancing at the guard who had been stood at the door

"And what happened here?"

"She wouldn't bathe sir, we had to use the hose."

it was whispered and the other agents surrounding the soldier gripped their weapons tighter

Pierce tutted, stepping into the room

"And the lights?"

"Thomson is looking into it."

the guard in the middle of the long corridors holds in a laugh

no, he wasn't

The soldier is urged forward into the room, where Pierce is stood looking into the darkest corner of the room

the room itself was in fact filthy

mould and dirt in the upper and lower corners of the room, rats crawling out of a small crack in the brick, old tattered blankets on the floor and an even older metal bed in the corner. the mattress it housed was no better, springs crawling out of rips in the fabric making an uneasy nights sleep for anyone

in the corner that held Pierce's attention was a small girl

hair greasy, dirt grime covering her body

her body covered in an oversized hospital gown which looked as if she had rolled around the floor in

she's staring at Pierce, shaking in her little corner as she curls into herself

"What's her name? Age?"

he's turned to the doctor who had originally spoken against this surprise, who in turn opens a file

he had to step closer to the open door to read the pages

"Alpine. 14."

"Right. Soldier, this is Alpine. She is your daughter. Your family."

The soldier is confused

what?

family?

daughter?

when did he ever have any of that

the surrounded agents have all slowly started to raise their weapons at him whilst he stands, staring at the girl who has now fully spun around to face him

her eyes are hopeful, excited, almost happy

his are blank, mindless, dead

"Okay."

in a second, that hopeful look in her eyes is shattered and nobody seems to notice with smirk of the guard's face, pointed towards her

the soldier is still confused

what did Pierce want him to do with this knowledge?

the man sighs and rubs his temple

"Perhaps we shouldn't have wiped him just yet."

the doctors nods in agreement, writing it down in the file he had been carrying

Pierce shakes his head and looks to the soldier

"When you are successful in your missions, her room will be updated. She'll get better furniture, a better, warmer room, one with less cracks. You'd like that for your own flesh and blood right?"

would he?

he thinks, yes?

he nods anyway looking at Pierce

"Right. Well, from now own, her survival is on your hands, Soldier. If you fail, poor Alpine will suffer. Your daughter. She will die."

there's fear in her eyes and before he can stop himself, he's shuffled closer

what was this?

Pierce looks pleased

"If you misbehave during any of your time here, she will be punished. You will not see each other, ever again. You don't want that, do you?"

he shakes his head and Pierce nods at him

"No, we don't want that. The bond between a father and his daughter is incredibly loving. Don't you want that?"

he nods in response, his eyes looking to the terrified girl in the corner of the room

"So you'll do better from now on, right?"

he nods again and Pierce smirks

"Good. Let's get started, shall we."

with that, he is ushered out of the room, not even able to talk to his newly found daughter before he had to go to work

he supposes its a good thing

he didn't know what to do, what to say to her

how to comfort her or how to even be a father

what are they supposed to do?

"What was that soldier?"

he looks up at Pierce, who had looked back at him at his words

he hadn't realised he'd spoken

"Nothing, Sir."

"No, no. You have a question. Repeat it."

the group stop outside of the ward his daughter was being kept in

The soldier swallows what felt like a brick in his throat

"Fathers. Sir. What are they supposed to do?"

Everyone seems a little shocked at the question, surprised that Pierce even let him speak out of turn

but the suited man steps closer, pats the soldiers cheek and gives him a grin

his plan would work, he was sure of it

"Fathers support their children, care for them. Make sure they survive. Provide and offer comfort. Especially their daughters. Daughters are weak, they need more guidance. They need a protector. That is your job as a father. It is your own personal mission to provide for your daughter now, by aiding HYDRA. Do you understand?"

The soldier nods

he could do that, Pierce had said the more successful his missions, the better her situation

he could provide for her now and he would ensure he did

no matter the mission, he would protect and care for his daughter

it was his mission after all

Angel meets the Winter Soldier

"why am I in the middle? why couldn't we put Sitwell there. Hell I'd even take a ride in the boot over this."

Alpine Doe was not happy about her circumstances

sure finding out that she was on a mass hitlist that would be taken out simultaneously in less than 8 hours along with some of the biggest heroes in the world and millions of innocent people wasn't the best news

but that she could deal with

being stuck in a tiny four seater car when there were 5 of them wasn't fun and wasn't something she could wriggle out off, especially with Sitwell and Nat leaning forward to talk to Steve

"Alpine, seriously there are bigger things more important than your comfort in a 15 minute car drive."

she can't help but roll her eyes and wriggle to get comfortable, elbowing Sitwell in the process and grinning at his grunt

she couldn't even get to her phone

the cruelty

so she does the next best thing, looking at the man next to her she nudges him

"How'd you like your flight?"

"Shut it, Doe."

"Aw, are you still mad that Nat kicked you off a building? It it not sitting well with you?"

a groan from beside her at the pun makes her turn to the red head

"Nat it was right there!"

"Alpine, just because it's there doesn't mean you have to do it."

Steve is shaking his head, Sam is confused at her lack of care and Nat is trying to educate the girl in appropriate times for jokes

which she does not take to

"And you, Wings! Coming in like a badass to rescue the princess over here, you sure you didn't pull a muscle grabbing him?"

"Seriously, you're on a hit list and you're making jokes?"

"Hell yeah, no point in crying when I could be making someone elses,"

she points to Sitwell

"last moments truly unbearable."

"You're hanging around Stark too much."

she's about to give them all a snarky comment when she hears a thud on top of their car and Sitwell is dragged through the window and into the oncoming traffic of the other side

"HOLY SHIT THAT WAS NOT ME!"

Nat kicks her to the space Sitwell used to be, she glances at the hole in the car's roof above where she used to be

she watches as Nat saves herself, Steve and Sam from the same instance

she's left in the backseat and is thrust forward into Sam's seat at the sudden break from Steve

she's barely glanced at the front, too occupied by the truck speeding up to them behind a car that just barely managed to get away

"Guys-"

she's just brought her gun out of it's holster, aimed it to the truck when it collides with their car, her hand and gun being smothered in broken glass, her forearm caught between some of the crushed metal that used to be their boot

well at least she wasn't in there

Nat's searching for her dropped weapon and Steve turns to Alpine, reaching over as best he could and grabbing her arm

he's helping her pull her arm free when the Winter Soldier jumps on top of their car once more

once free, her dominant hand now a bloodied mess and the stinging pain of glass in her wounds keeping her adrenaline up, she takes aim with her other hand and starts shooting at the truck

it's times like this where she despises the existence of bullet proof glass

she hears Sam curse and more glass shatter before Steve is once again turning to her

"UPFRONT NOW!"

she doesn't hesitate, climbing up and into Sam's lap, mirroring Nat who blindly shoots at the roof of their barely there vehicle

she's spares a glance to the road, seeing what the sitation upfront was for the first time since they were attacked when

"WHERE'S THE STEERING WHEEL!?"

Sam only shouts in response , an arm wrapping around her when the truck crashes into them causing them to swerve

"Is now a bad time to say I get carsick?!"

she's half joking

"Hang on!"

Steve has reached over to her and Sam before she realised, pulling them over the gear stick

Nat is gripping onto Steve for dear life, her other hand coming up to grab Alpine and give her more stability on their little huddle over the car door

Sam is trying to hold onto her and Steve as they slide, but even with the door under them to protect them, she's still sliding off after their initial landing

that would leave a mark for sure

by now, her hand and arm is covered in blood and glass, the same arm now has a severe case of road rash along side her right leg

but at least she wasn't dead

yet

up ahead she sees Sam fall off, he rolls and so is saved from the same time of injury

she's up and running towards him as soon as she remembers

he's not armed

at least she didn't think he was

honestly she couldn't remember, but her instinct said to save him

when's she's reached him, she's grabbing his shirt and dragging him up and to cover

they take cover behind a car and the pain begins to creep up her spine as her body shakes

Sam's speaking to her but she doesn't register his words as Steve is blown, quite literally, off the bridge

"Are you armed?!"

Sam nods and shows her his knife, she nods in return and gives him her gun

"What about you?!"

"I'm not a good shot up close, much better with knives."

Sam goes to offer her his, but she shakes her head and grabs two of her own

"Where are you hiding all these?!"

"You don't wanna know!"

Nat's jumped off the bridge but Alpine knows she'd be fine, after all, Nat helped trained her

she takes a few deep breath as she watches the Winter Soldier flinch back and take cover, he takes his goggles off and Alpine practically sees the anger at the fact he'd been shot

she grins and shakes her head when he releases a bunch of bullets bellow them

"Nat's made the big one angry! Try and take out the little guys up here, make sure Steve is good! I'm gonna make sure Nat has some back up"

Sam is sceptical because this girl is 18 and hanging on by a thread

maybe they should have gotten a bigger car

but Alpine is up and running before he can stop her

she's attacked one of the last of the HYDRA goons and used his rope to get down to the street below, offering Steve some aid by dealing with the guy closest to her with a swift throw of her knife

she's able to use the distraction of Sam's shots and their attention of Steve to rush out of the way, securing her knife in her belt

her rush is stopped though as a bullet grazes her already open wound

i mean seriously, can't these guys at least aim to the left side where she wasn't injured?!

this is when she realises that someone had turned their attention to her, as she's about to turn and deal with it, Steve had already used the shield to deflect some bullets towards her shooter

"Go, i'll catch up!"

don't have to tell her twice

it doesn't take her long to find Nat and the Soldier, and she lets out a relieved breath to see Nat escape once again by electrocuting the metal arm

it seems to affect him enough, but a little more time never hurt anyone

an advantage of being an 18 year old spy, you're a lot smaller than her adult colleagues

she's rushed at him before he realises she was there, delivering a swift push-kick to his back which, thanks to his distraction with his arm, puts him on his knees

she runs to catch up with Nat, glancing back to see the Soldier adjust his arm and glare at area there were running in

oh that was badass

she's caught up to Nat by now, and the older spy is relieved to see her still kicking about

"Try and leave this one to Steve as much as possible! He's no joke, let the super-soldier handle it!"

"When have you ever known me to back down from a challenge Nat?!"

"Alpine I'm serious! You offer support and noth-"

they're cut off by a bullet in Nat's shoulder, the red head gasping in pain and grabbing Alpine's hand to pull her into cover

Alpine is helping apply pressure to her would before she freezes

something just didn't feel right

this guy was good at sneaking around

it felt like a set up

"Alpine. Support and nothing else."

Nat must have felt it too but the young girl just grins much to her dismay

as if she'd just sit back and Steve handle the man who shot her mother-figure, who tried to blow her up three times and who technically did blow up Steve had it not been for that basically invincible dinner plate of his

"Nat, I love you but-"

the sound of combat boots thudding on the metal of a car tells Alpine that they'd ran out of time for a heart to heart

she's pushed Nat to the side and starting a running start at the Soldier, surprising both him and Nat

he's barely raised his weapon before she's kicked it out of his hands and all but jumped on him

legs on his shoulders, she's giving him punch after punch to the head

she can feel his grip on her hips and waist, trying to get a hold of her so he could throw her down

she'd get a few more hits before he'd manage to do that

she feels his grip leave her on one side and puts more force into her punches

just a few more should do the trick to at least to make him lose some sort of balance

the sharp pain of a knife in her side makes her scream out, the shock of it making her lose her grip

he throws her onto the road off of him

she brings him down with her

the pair roll of the ground, both sitting up on their knees glancing at each other

she only breaks their gaze to glance at the black HYDRA knife still lodged in her side and groans

fuck

this was going to hurt

a lot

he's up and walking towards her, she's managed to scramble into standing up

they're walking towards each other with purpose, Alpine takes the knife from her belt and flips it

the soldier glances at it

time to have some fun

now Alpine preferred knives to guns for the simple reason that they were quieter

but even she had to admit that there was a beauty in knife fighting that she couldn't describe

had she had her swords, she would have been able to keep him at a distance

but she didn't

so she used her past training sessions with Steve to guide her

they meet in an almost elegant fashion

her hand is raised, poised to slash at his chest but his arm had come up to block it, her free arm coming to take the knife out of her hand before he can grab it but his other hand comes to block it in a weaker hold, obviously preparing to use it to attack

she drops the knife into her own hand and slashes at his thigh

hit one

be back up, kicking her hand and the knife goes flying up

it's a scramble to catch it, both of them trying to deflect the others attempts until it lands in his hand and Alpine had to lean back to avoid a slash to her chest

curse civilian clothing

in leaning back, she delivers a kick to his masked chin as she follows through in a backwards roll

hit two

he shakes his head and steps forward, she delivers another kick to his sternum

hit three

he grabs her leg after the kick, fingers pushing into the open road rash wound, twisting the limb around to throw her off balance and threatening to plunge her knife into her leg

ah shit

she brings her other leg up, kicking the knife out of his hand and catching it, slashing his thankfully fleshy arm

he drops her and she tumbles to the ground, rolling out of the way before he can land a very metallic punch to her face

brutal

she can hear Nat in the background calling out for her, to run whilst he's preoccupied with getting his arm out of the ground

but the pain in her body is simply getting worse and worse she can't move

but she has too

he's free and walking towards her, the knife in still in her hand

she has something in her favour at least

she struggles to get up, but the Soldier is walking towards her at such a pace that it's do able by the time he's reached her

like a goddamn wolf stalking it's prey

she rushes at him, he rushes towards her

she ducks and dodges his punches, the knife dances between the two of them as they each catch, flip and stab at one another

they're at a stalemate but it's tipping heavily in his favour

he's strong and definitely more experiences than she was

but she's more agile due to her stature so can just barely keep up

she needs the upper hand

she takes a chance, using the cars surrounding them to jump on top if him again

this time she uses her body weight to flip around him, to bring him to the ground with her once again

if she could immobilise him just long enough for Steve to come

because he was coming

she was sure of it

then Steve could land a few solid punches and gain an advantage

she could do that

but even without her training

she was just a little girl and this was a grown ass man

momentum and force meant nothing if he could counteract it

and he could with a simple arm around her waist and another jab to the knife still embedded into her left side

she feels the wound grow bigger, her lapse in focus meaning he could easily through her back onto the ground

she's gasping and scrambling away

maybe she should have taken the time earlier to run away

she thought she was ready to take on this challenge and in the end, she'd only managed three solid hits

if she survived this, then she would make sure she got a lot more in the next time they met

that was if she survived

he's obviously annoyed by her attempts to subdue him

she'd given him a good fight after all, but it just wasn't good enough

he stalking towards her, pulling a gun from his holster and she's staring right at him

if she died right now, she knew that Steve and Nat would Avenge her

hell, hopefully the other Avengers would as well

if she died right now, she just hoped they knew how much she loved them

she hears the safety click off as everything starts to move in slow motion

hears her own gasps for breath and feels the pain coursing through her body

hears Nat screaming her name

hears the stomp of shoes as someone runs towards them

hears another, smaller pair of shoes just after

hears the gunshot

hears a familiar twang

hears Steve's pants as he shields her

the world starts moving faster once again

she's pulled back by Nat, away from the fighting

all she can do is watch as Steve does what she couldn't

Nat rests her against a nearby car, gently pushing her hair out of her face and wounds

she looks up at her and tries to smile through the sickening feeling building in her stomach

Nat smiles at her, glancing up at the fight happening before them as Alpine does the same

Steve's holding up well, the Winter Soldier has gone through a lot of his options and is back in a hand to hand combat

but Steve Rogers can do the things that Alpine can't

such as flip the tank of a man and stop that goddamn metal arm that has added bruises to the list of Alpine's growing injuries

Nat had ran off to grab one of the many discarded weapons surrounding them to give Steve some support

Alpine uses her remaining strength to stand, a hand holding the knife still as she moves towards the fight, wanting to make sure Steve was okay

she'd re-join if she had to, even if she wouldn't last long

Steve had managed to flip the Soldier once again, his mask falling to the ground

Alpine steps closer, time to see who this guy was

"Bucky?"

she frowns at Steve words, looking at the man who had nearly killed her

there was no way that the man pictured in the Smithsonian's Captain America exhibition was James Buchanan Barnes

Steve Roger's best friend

Killed in Action during the war

he fell off of a train for fuck sake!

but as she's looking at him, she can see the similarities in the pictures and the man standing before her

well shit

Bucky Barnes nearly killed her

and she'd get him back for it one day

"Who the hell is Bucky?"

Sam decides the join the party, stopping Bucky from shooting Steve

Alpine turns to see Nat with a weapon she knows can launch grenades, turning back to Steve and beginning her run over as Bucky steadies himself and raises his gun after a moment of hesitation

"Steve!"

she's called out and jumped on him before Nat shoots, they stumble to the ground and Steve uses the shield to cover them from any flying debris

when the smoke clears, Bucky is gone and there are sirens in the distance

Steve's still in shock

Nat is panting, leaning against a car

Sam is just as confused as Steve, if not more

and Alpine is hanging on for dear life, her adrenaline having faded during her rest

Steve's hand brushes the knife in her side and she winces, he's pulling her up and checking her over - not liking the paleness of her skin

nobody moves as the cars begin to surround them, Steve can only hold her to his side as she watches everyone she thought of as colleagues and friends point weapons at them

he drops the shield watching in frustration as Rumlow grabs Alpine and forces to kneel further away before beginning to handcuff Captain America

Alpine glares at the men surround her, growling when one goes to take the knife from her side

"Touch it and I shove it in your throat."

weapons are raised to kill and the knife is removed anyway, a cry of pain drawing some attention

blood pours quicker from her would as she's cuffed and dragged up into the back of an armoured truck after Steve had been locked into place

all she can do is lean against a locked up Steve and focus on her breathing

Steve can only think about Bucky

how scared he must of been and how betrayed he must have felt when he realised Steve hadn't come for him

how he'd been turned into a killing machine for HYDRA, how he'd brought a girl, once happy and joking, near to death

Sam and Nat are trying to comfort him, but all he can feel is the weight of both his own decisions and of Alpine's nearly lifeless body on his side

Alpine is sort of conscious during their escape from the truck, even less conscious and more delirious when Hill brings them to the dam

Steve is carrying her in, Sam helping Nat and all three objecting when Hill tells the doctor to hold off on taking Nat and Alpine away just yet

when Alpine see's Fury, she frowns

"I'm dead and the person they sent to greet me to the after life is Nick fucking Fury in a hospital bed, the audacity."

"I'm not joining whatever undead Avenger 2.0 you have planned,"

"Well, it's a good thing we're not dead then huh? A blood transfusion and you'll be fine."

"I'd say you aren't the boss of me, but that would be a lie."

Its only when Steve hands Alpine over to the doctor for that blood transfusion that Steve relaxes when it comes to her situation

she'd been through worse

but Steve felt a sense of responsibly for this one

after all, it had been his best friend that had done it

but Alpine didn't care about that

she'd get Bucky back for it, whether that was before or after she and Steve rescued him, would be up to Bucky

not that he knew it

or Steve

for now, she rested and allowed her body to recover until it was time to leave for their mission which Steve, Sam and Nat no doubt tried to talk her out of

but she was stubborn

and she knew Bucky would also be there

so until then, she twirled the knife that had once been lodged into her side in her hand (it had been given to Hill and in turn she gave it back to her) and waited

Bucky Finds Out He's Going To Be A Dad

At last the world was safe

Steve Rogers had retired the shield, instead taking to training Sam to take up the title as Captain America

of course Sam still had his grievances when it came to this change, but after what had happened with the flag smashers and Isiah Bradley, he figured if anyone was to take up the shield, maybe it should have been him

Steve and Bucky could not have agreed more

Steve had began taking art classes in his spare time, but worked with Sam as a volunteer talking to Veterans and helping them adapt to civilian life whilst under going his own journey

he went to therapy with Bucky (Bucky was not happy about doing double sessions since the courts made him do a separate session to ensure he was stable)

he was even considering getting back into the dating world

after all, Peggy had lived her life, it was time for him to do the same

Tony had also retired after the war with Thanos. His brief rush with death made him rethink the life of a super hero - he's consult occasionally but for the majority, he was a retired stay at home father

Pepper was still running the company after all

he enjoyed finally being able to rest, supporting Morgan and Peter with all their endeavours

and being able to plan fabulous baby themed parties throughout Pepper's second pregnancy

he and Bucky, whilst not on regular speaking terms, had sat down and engaged in a civil conversation in which Bucky was finally able to apologise fully

their relationship is strained, but they can be civil with one another when needed to be

Tony some what trusts Bucky to look out for Peter on missions

but he knows that he and Sam are Peter's main annoyances

Steve had managed to bring Natasha back from the dead, unable to explain just how, nobody questioned it, just happy to have her back in their lives

she had taken a well deserved holiday after everything she had done and sacrificed

seriously, she was gone for months, no body knew where she had gone

Thor and Bruce had wondered if she'd accidentally ended up on Sakar and couldn't decide who they felt more sorry for, Natasha or the Grandmaster

speaking of Thor

this man had the biggest heart attack of his life

Loki had once again faked his death, having to spend the war in hiding from Thanos after a promise of death for his betrayal

Thor was rightfully pissed, refusing to speak to his brother for months

the avengers got the chance to actually see Loki grovel for forgiveness from his brother

only for this man to grin and accept money from Clint since he bet that Loki would come begging for forgiveness and Clint figured he'd die before he saw the day that happened

Loki got the last laugh however when he introduced Thor to the young boy he'd basically adopted whilst in hiding

Wanda, who had briefly slipped into the darkness, used her powers to search the multiverse (something she'd neglected to tell the other avengers until it was almost too late) for Vision and had found him in a universe which had been dying

when she'd brought him into their universe, her and Doctor Strange had it out, it nearly tore the team apart once again and nearly brought Tony and Steve out of retirement

but after many days of studying various spell books and looking into many futures - they were able to settle on a course of actions which meant the new Vision could stay in their universe without it tearing itself into pieces

he had gone to therapy, made his amends, listened to Sam and Steve's advice, made friends with other grumpy old men

he finally felt content

and with Steve in his life, he slowly began to found pieces of his old self mixed in with the newly found version of himself

he loved it

one night, he Sam and Steve had decided to attempt a guys night out

Bucky and Steve, for obvious reasons, couldn't get drunk

but Sam could and he was loving the fact that he always had two designated drivers at his beck and call

so Sam goes pretty heavy at the bar, drinking like its his last night

everyone is enjoying seeing Captain America pissed out of his mind

so seeing this version of Captain America reminded them of his humanity

it also gave Steve an actually heart attack

"Sam get off the bar!"

"ALL THE SINGLE LADIES"

Bucky is loving it, filming it on his new phone

he'd bribe Sam with that later

He's just about to head back to the booth they'd situated themselves in when he notices a young woman had made herself at home there

despite their coats being there

"Sorry miss, that's our table."

"Oh yeah? What are you gunna do about it?"

theres a flirty undertone there and Bucky picks up on it

and he likes it

"I'm sure you'll enjoy it, whatever it is."

"Shall we find out?"

Honestly this man will never get over just how confident and outgoing modern women were

not that he was complaining

he spends the night talking to her, flirting back and forth

they're leaning in close together as they share stories

she talks about how she moved from South Korea at a young age, he gives her stories of his own childhood in return

before he knows it, he's walking her back to her place and their leaning against her door before she invites him in

"Look, I should just tell you now. I'm not looking for an old timey romance here..."

Bucky was fine with that

he wasn't ready for a relationship definitely not, but they had made a small connection

and she was an attractive young woman

and bucky barnes is a simple, simple man

"Neither am I."

the next morning, after a night that Bucky will not forget anytime soon, he slips out of her apartment, hearing a muffled 'bye' by the woman he leaves behind

when he gets home, he's disappointed to see a hung over Sam led on his couch with his head essentially in a bucket

not as disappointed at Steve who sits in his arm chair, glaring at his old friend

"And where have you been James?"

"You left without even saying goodbye."

"Do you know how worried I was?"

Sam looks up and all it takes is once look at the disgruntled Bucky who just wanted to get in bed after a long night

starts grinning like the idiot he is

"Bucky got some."

"James Buchanan Barnes you sly dog you."

"That's my boy!"

he definitely gets teased by these two but lets be honest, Sam is teasing Steve about the fact Bucky wasn't even looking for anyone and managed to get laid and Steve is there tryna get in the game

Steve reminded him it's because he had to do damage control after the new Captain America tried twerking his ass to Taylor Swift

they spend the day together, just three friends watching random shit on TV and enjoying themselves

apart from Sam who was so heavily hungover he genuinely thought he was going to die

Since that night, Bucky hadn't really thought much of it

he didn't need to go out and get with some girl every night, it was just nice to know that he actually still had game

he'd thought of the woman maybe once, but other than that wasn't too fussed if she never wanted to see him again

he's survive

but imagine his shock when he gets a knock on his door nearly two months later and opens it to reveal her stood, annoyed as all hell at the trouble she just had to go through to find this man

"Jesus! I know you're an avenger and everything but do you have to be so difficult to find? Had to force it out of Wilson, who by the way is an ass."

as if on queue, a message from Sam comes through on his phone reading 'you're welcome ;)'

"Uh.... hey? Come on in, how can I help?"

"Glad you asked."

she's so annoyed and Bucky is so confused as she shows him the three positive pregnancy tests in her pocket

he doesn't blink

just stares

she has to click her fingers in his face to snap him out of this little daze

he doesn't know what to do

should he apologise?

should he propose?

no proposing would not be the best way

after all it wasn't to 40s anymore

oh god

his mother is rolling in her grave

"I.... Uh...."

when i say he's panicking

he's panicking

but he's so calm on the outside

she thinks he's actually a robot malfunctioning until

"I left my stove on."

Man is trying to walk out of his own apartment

she stops him, sits him down and gets the poor man a glass of water

"Are you sure you aren't the one that's pregnant?"

Bucky nearly faints at the thought

"Woah okay there soldier,"

she's sat on the arm of his chair, rubbing his back as he comes to grips with the situation

"I am... so sorry. I don't.. we used protection. You said you were on birth control."

he may have been confused on the idea of birth control seeing as the pill hadn't become mainstream until the 60s

but that name implied it's purpose, it was one of the few things that made bucky think

ah, the wonders of modern medicine

"Yeah well, they're only like 99% effective and sometimes the pill can be even less than that depending on which on you take"

ah

"besides, you're a super soldier. no doubt your swimmers are uh super as well,"

bucky could die right there

of course this would be the way he finds out the serum effective everything about his body and DNA

"Well this is what i get for being happy."

this dramatic ass man

he just hadn't considered that fact that this part of his body would have been effected in such a way

"look, i've got an appointment today, I wanted to tell you before hand but like I said, you were hard to find. You wanna come to the appointment and we can talk about this?"

all bucky can do is nod

he stands and follows her out the door, the walk to the appointment is long and quiet

she's occasionally patting his back in comfort

it's not like shes heartless

the man literally just fought in a war and was still in recovery, despite being a lot better than he had been

when they got the the doctors, they sat together in the waiting room and Bucky looked terrified as he read all the flyers and posters

literally this morning all he wanted to do was laze on his couch

he had no where to be

he'd done his training for the day

Sam and Steve were doing special Captain America training

and now here he was sat around a doctors office surrounded by pregnant lady with the stranger he'd knocked up weeks ago

to say he wanted to vomit was an understatement

when her name was called, they both stood and walked into the room

Bucky had done the decent thing and left the room briefly when she got changed for the examination but was back inside and sat at her side soon enough

she was trying to make small talk and bucky was honestly trying to answer but Jesus Christ he was nervous

he tries smiling at her as she makes small jokes but he can't help the nagging feeling in his stomach

he doesn't even know what it's trying to tell him

and it's not until the doctor smiles and tells the two that she's found their baby

"There we are! I'd say by the looks of it, you're around 7 weeks."

holy shit

it was tiny but it was there

they had to lean in closer to see the baby, but when they did they couldn't both help but laugh at the size of it

it was so so small and it barely looked human

but it was there

Bucky had the biggest smile on his face watching the screen

"You're both looking pretty healthy, I'm happy with that. Have you been told your options in regards to carrying out the pregnancy or deciding not too?"

his heart dropped at the thought but he tried not to think about it

obviously they needed to discuss this

"Actually, would we be able to have a minute?"

the doctor nods and leaves and bucky takes a deep breath

okay

looks like they were going to talk about this now

he tears his eyes from the screen, frozen on the little sack of cells

he looks at her and gives her what she could only describe as kicked puppy smile

"What do you want to do?"

he asks her the question first, not wanting to get any hopes up

wanting to get straight to the point

she sighs and gives him a serious look

"I don't..."

Bucky's heart is breaking

"I don't want a kid. I can't look after a kid, I have zero maternal instincts."

Bucky nods at her words, eyes glancing at the screen

maybe he could get the doctor to print it out

"but... i can see you want this."

he looks back at her and shakes his head at her firmly

"Don't do it just because of me. It's your body, your choice. I won't hold it against you."

she stares at him for a little while

she didn't want to be a mother

she wasn't ready to have a child to support just yet - to be honest she was sure she'd never be ready

kids just weren't in her plan

that being said, she always had wondered what pregnancy would be like

and she knew she'd never get herself in a situation like this again

she didn't know if Bucky would get this chance again

and if you were gunna have a kid with anyone and let them raise it

might as well be an avenger

"To be honest, I wouldn't mind it. I think, if even if you didn't want it I'd still try carry to term and out it up for adoption. So, if you want the kid, then let's do it. But I was serious, I don't want a romance, and I'm not ready to be a mother."

Bucky is nodding his head quickly

"That's fine. I'll raise the kid, won't ask for child support or anything. You won't have to worry about anything, you can have as clean of a break as you want."

she nods, they'd work out the finer details later down the line but for now, they smile at each other and look at their kid on the screen

"It's so damn ugly."

"Yeah, you definitely are not ready to be a mother."

they laugh together and the doctor comes back in, nodding at their plan and prescribing the necessary prenatal treatments and organising their next appointment which Bucky was adamant he be available for

Bucky didn't forget to ask about the pictures, asking his baby mama for permission of course

When they get back to his apartment, he's pinning it on his fridge and she's shaking her head at him being a total dad

that night, in his excitement and her amusement, they settle those finer details

Bucky would take full custody of the kid and she would sign away her rights

she'd still be able to visit, Bucky made sure to tell her that, and if in the future she decided she wanted back in their kids life and it was something the kid also wanted she'd be able to

he also asks for a medical history, just in case something came up and he needed a full breakdown of anything that could cause the baby harm in their future

She meanwhile agrees to it all, happy with her own decisions and the fact that Bucky is so understanding in them

she only asks for help with the hospital bills and anything that relates to baby care and Bucky agrees

he'd figure something else, but helping her pay the bills was the absolute least he could do, especially since she was going to be bringing a piece of him into the world

something he'd thought would never happen in a million years

they'd exchanged numbers and decided to do weekly check ins, since Bucky had asked to be apart of the pregnancy journey with her, wanting to offer as much support as he could

she had also asked for him to record the reactions of the other avengers when he told them

he hadn't even thought about that part of the journey

too hooked up on the fact that he was going to be a dad

that someone in this world was finally going to be blood related to him once again

he couldn't be more nervous

or more excited

now he just had to tell Sam and Steve

how he was going to do that he didn't know

he still didn't know three days later, howe to slip it into a conversation when they went round Steve's for a more calmed down version of guys night

they're sat around the TV, watching some random crap that Sam had put on as apart of his 'educating the oldies' project he had going on

now there could have been another way to tell them

maybe if Bucky had used half of a braincell he would've thought of another way

instead, this man waits and wait and wait and waits

until in the middle of a dramatic scene in the movie

when Sam is mid beer sip

and Steve is mid popcorn crunch

to spit out

"Oh i'm going to be a dad by the way"

the men are choking as soon as the words leave bucky's mouth and they're looking at him like he's crazy

he is

he's whipped out the baby scan that he'd cut off the strip and kept in his wallet

proudly and nervously showing his friends

Sam is shook

Steve is malfunctioning

"How... when.... who?"

"Was it the girl at the bar?"

"James Barnes did you not wear protection?!"

"C'mon man, wrap it before you tap it."

Bucky is shaking his head and handing Steve the picture

"We used it and she said she was on the pill. Best guess we have is that it failed."

"Well i'll be."

Steve claps him on the shoulder, smiling at his old friend

"Congratualations Pal."

Bucky grins and nods

"She said she's not ready to take care of it, so I'm getting full custody when the time comes. But the kid's gunna need it's two stupid ass uncles,"

he pauses for dramatic effect

as if this moment wasn't dramatic enough

"and a god father,"

Sam jumps up, movie completely forgotten about as he salutes to

"SHOTGUN"

"You can't call shotgun on being a god parent."

"Yes i can, I just did."

"You gotta work for it,"

"Oh i'm gunna -"

Bucky shakes his head because he already knows the kid is gunna have Sam, Steve and Nat as god parents (the latter was the one he was absolutely dreading telling)

he's looking at the picture of his baby whilst Sam and Steve about who will be god parent and can honestly say that for the first time in a while, he was excited about this new chapter in his life

it was definitely going to be a wild ride

but it would be so so worth it just to have his own flesh and blood in his arms once again

Bucky and Alpine's Small Interactions

Bucky knew about Alpine's existence - he made sure to do some sort of research/check on his neighbours, to make sure that they wouldn't pose a threat to him

considering the business they ran from their home, he knew that his dear neighbours wouldn't be too willing to bring armed forces to their complex

he's seen Alpine around, skinny, frail, looking a lot younger than her age (a solid 12 years - how she'd managed it in her living conditions Bucky didn't know)

he noticed she was always on her own, he never saw either parent with her

maybe this is why he felt something towards her, they were both forced into a life of solitude.

having lived in it for 80+ years, Bucky was used to it

but watching this girl be forced to live it for no other reason than simply existing, his heart ached for her

but he had rules

and he had to stick by them in order to stay settled in Bucharest

and he managed to stick to those rules for all of 2 months

Alpine had been locked outside of her flat, either by accident or on purposed Bucky didn't care to question (that was a lie, he cared very much so)

he went to bed, figuring that if he were asleep, he wouldn't be focused on the young girl out in the corridor sleeping on the hard, cold ground

oh how wrong he was

his dreams of his sister had slowly turned into a nightmare, ending when Alpine appeared, lurking behind the crowd in his mind

a shadow, always there, watching him, begging him to do something, anything

his dreams called for him to act, his sister begging for him to do so, as they prepare to ice skate in his slumber

it was peaceful, for a short time, until it wasn't

chaos ensues, the ice under their feet cracking, his sister falling in and him diving in after her

he'd managed to pull them out, but rather than answer the question of if she were okay, his sister, Rebecca, begs him to help the girl stood by the hole in the ice

no one noticed as she took a step forward

no one tried to stop her as she plunged into the icy depths

no one but Bucky

but he was too far, the world seemed to stretch back as he ran and reached for her

until suddenly he was awake, panting and nervous, thinking of the young girl in the corridor.

he gave in, looking through the peephole to see her still sat there and slowly opened the door

either she was a light sleeper or she just had not slept

she bolted up right, chest rising in small, quick bursts. he could practically feel the vibrations of her heart pounding against her chest

he calmed her, asking her name

she hesitated

she didn't know it

Bucky could feel his anger rising, how does a child not know their own name?!

Bucky offers his own to her after she asks for it, wanting to know what a name was supposed to sound like

for bucky, it was the first time using his name since his escape

she choses her own name, Alpine

it's strange

but he tries to smile at her and nods approvingly

she lights up at the endearment

he gives her an option that night, either he gives her pillows and blankets (his own because he didn't have any spare)

or she comes inside and sleeps on a bed with his pillows and blankets

she chooses the latter, scared of the germaphobe neighbour down stairs

it's awkward at first, but soon her adrenaline runs out and she's half asleep on the couch from where he'd left her whilst he sorted out the bedroom for her

he lefts out an apologetic hum, gently rousing the poor girl

"I know kid, I know. You can sleep soon, just gotta get in bed okay?"

it doesn't take long before she is out like a light, snuggled into the blankets, safe and sound in Bucky's bedroom whilst he sleeps on the couch

in the morning, Bucky wakes to the sound of the door and he bolts up

who the fuck was that

he checks the bathroom and kitchen, peeking into the bedroom to see nothing

it was probably Alpine leaving

checking the peephole, he sighs in relief at seeing her sat on the floor in front of her door

he's about to lock the door once more and get some more shuteye before he spots two 'regulars' come up the stairs

they glance at Alpine with sick grins, knocking on her door and slowly stepping closer to the poor girl

oh fuck no

Bucky is surprised he doesn't rip the door off its hinges with the force he opens the door with

it makes the men flinch but not Alpine, instead, she looks up and smiles at him

soon after, Alpine's door opens a crack, closing again and then opening once more after the bolt and chain is removed.

as much as he hates it, Alpine could now get inside.

he supposes he should be grateful

but he can't shake the awful feeling in his chest as he watches her enter after the men

perhaps he just needed more sleep

The next time they meet, a fire alarm had been pulled in the building, causing a mass evacuation

he had waited for her to leave her apartment, following behind her as they joined the crowd on the stairs slowly but surely making their way to the front of the building

he practically growls at everyone

they're pushing a shoving, terrified that it may be an actually fire

bucky knows it's not, he can't smell the smoke

in their haste, they keep pushing Alpine into the railing, causing her already aggravated coughs to worsen

what's worse, they're forcing her down two steps at a time, something her little legs couldn't quite handle due the the spacing

she's tripping and stumbling, holding onto the railing when a particularly hard shove causes her to fall forwards without a chance to catch herself

Bucky's hand reaches out automatically

gripping the back of her collar and pulling her back up.

his grip remains on her baggy shirt, squaring up his body and sticking close to her so that no one could push her again

they hit him and are stopped in their path as they collide with the sturdy body of an ex-assassin instead on the weak one belonging to his neighbour

when they get downstairs though, Bucky leaves

if there was a fire then emergency services would show up

he didn't need that

he'd circle back to make sure there was no fire, no police involvement

if there was then he'd grab everything he needed (if anything survived) and leave

he couldn't help but hope that there was no fire and he could continue living here

at least for short while

an hour later, he came back

no fire

no sign of police

no danger to his location

sighing, he begins the journey up the stairs to his floor

imagine his surprised when he gets halfway up and Alpine is clinging onto the banister, coughing up a lung and gasping for breath

surely, she should have been upstairs by now

her breathing is ragged and croaky, she'd obviously been struggling for a while now

he kicks a stone on the stairs, making a noise to let her know someone was coming up behind her

when she turns, there are tears in her eyes

"You good, Alpine?"

"Hi Bucky... just can't... catch my breath..."

he winces at her wheezing

he can't just leave the poor kid

he wasn't a monster

was he?

with his metal fist clenched and hidden away in his pocket, he offers her a hand - a flesh one, which she takes

bucky is surprised how tight her grip is

she tries going faster with his help, but he slows her down and tries to smile at her

"take your time kid. I'm here."

"You don't have to wait for me Bucky"

"I'm not going anywhere. Take your time."

When they eventually get up there (they had to stop a couple of times and Bucky had seriously contemplates just picking her up), he waits until he is absolutely sure that she can get into her own place and that her parents hadn't locked her out once again

if they had, he'd just take her back into his place again

he was sure that it would be the better alternative despite the sparce furniture

she did and the pair bid goodnight to each other

he decided that night that the next time the opportunity showed itself, he'd get her some sort of inhaler

he knew a couple of people who could help, he'd just have to make sure they wouldn't reveal anything

easy enough to do when the majority of their customers are underaged kids and when Bucky knew exactly who gave them their supply

but that was a job for another day

or maybe tonight

he had a feeling that it couldn't wait

especially when all he could hear through the walls was her coughing and her parents shouting at her to be quiet

yeah, he'd get it tonight

he doesn't see her for a couple of days, but he knows she got the gifts of three inhalers he'd left in her mailbox

she was the only one to actually use it - her parents didn't seem to care for the piles of bills and threats of eviction, simply suggesting that 'If we don't see it, they can't kick us out'

he feels relieved about the fact she got the inhalers, but still finds himself worrying about the amount of food she was eating or the clothes she war, the layers of dirt on her skin and her matted hair which was unsalvageable at this point

he hates that he is so caught up in his worries for her

he's on the run for the love of god

but she's alone in this world, and so young

it picks at his heart until the wound it leaves behind is a gaping hole, wanting to be filled with the slightest chance to look after her and protect her like she were family

which is why, when she gets caught trying to steal from a market stall, he reacts quickly.

he grabs the stall vendors hand, which in return tightens the grip on Alpines arm, her own hand holding a bruised apple

"what's going on here?"

"mind you're own business."

the vendor pulls her towards him, shaking her body aggressively in the process, calling her a thief

"I wasn't stealing! I was picking it up off the floor, I swear!"

"Filthy liar!"

this man has the audacity

THE AUDACITY

to try and hit her

Bucky sees red

all he wants to do in the moment is send this vendor into the back of his stall, or through the table. anything to get him the hell away from the girl and make his reconsider ever trying to do that ever again. bucky didn't know if she was stealing. he didn't need to know.

he did know that causing such a scene would not be a wise idea

he grabs the vendors raised hand, shocking the man enough for him to release the grip on Alpine's arm

"How dare-"

"You'll have to forgive my daughter, here, I'll pay for it now. And I'll take a punnet of plums and a couple oranges too."

the man seems to calm down at the sight of Bucky pulling out some cash, Alpine hiding behind the man

"She's your brat?"

this fucking guy

"Yeah."

he feels her grip onto the back of his jacket, looking down to see the dreamy, dazed look on her face, her eyes watching the fruit be moved and placed into a plastic bag

"Teach her not to steal. And give her a bath for fuck sake, her stench is scaring away my customers."

with that, the man attends to his other customers

sparing a glare at the man, Bucky decides that human interaction can wait today, instead turning and walking away from the market place

bag full of fruit in one metal hand

Alpine's in the other, flesh hand

he's fuming

how dare that man not only attempt to hit her, but then insult her to her face? as if she wasn't a human being? when had humanity fallen to such a level

right about the time they experimented on people and turned them in super-soldier weapons to be used for whatever they wanted

so always.

he's too in his own thoughts to realise that Alpine had been speaking to him

that is until he feels a weak tug on his hand

he looks down and his glare is replaced by a concerned frown

stopping, he kneels down to her height, gently running his thumb over the back of her hand

her arm is bruising and bucky has to stop himself from marching back to the marketplace and getting some revenge for the girl

"...I'm sorry..."

he glances up at her and his frown deepens

"I thought... it was on the floor... no one would want it anyway... i just.... i'm so hungry and i though he wouldn't notice..."

Bucky is pulling the fruit out of the bag as soon as she finishes speaking

he didn't care she was trying to steal a bruised apple

he rips open the netting surrounding the fruit and thrusts two plums into her hands

"Eat."

"but-"

"No. Eat."

for someone so hungry they would steal, Alpine is hesitant to bite into the fruit

but as soon as she does, she relaxes, sighing happily as she munches on the fruit, Bucky gives her two more when she's finished

"I don't care what you were trying to do. But if you're hungry, you come to me. I won't let you go without, I promise, so just ask me."

why was he making these offers and promises?

he barely knew the girl and yet he was going out of his way to save her?

maybe it was because she reminded him of his past

maybe it was because Steve pulled him from the darkness

he wasn't sure

in all honesty, Bucky doesn't think he'll ever understand his instinct to protect this sick little girl

but he can't argue with the feeling he gets when she sends him one of the brightest smiles he thinks he's ever seen, fruit juice dripping down her chin

shaking his head, hip lips move on their own to form a smile back at her, his hand reaching up to wipe the juice from her chin and rub it on his jeans

"Nice?"

"Mh! I love these! Thank you so much Bucky!"

bless his heart

he will buy her as many plums as she wants just so long as she keeps smiling at him like that

once again, he helps her up the stairs and waits for her to go in before

once again, it feels like a punch to the gut hearing her parents shout at her through the walls

he sees her again the next day, trying to climb up the stairs whilst carrying two shopping bags full of food

Bucky was sure she wouldn't get a chance to eat any of it before her parents go to it first

their so heavy that the plastic is stretching and threatening to break as she tries with all her might to get up the stairs

the one of the bags break, letting loose a wave of cans and packets down the stairs towards Bucky

he manages to catch a few before they get too far, placing them in his pockets as he goes to retrieve the rest

Alpine is close to tears, frustrated and just exhausted from the day she'd had

"Hey, hey, don't cry Alpine, it's fine. Look"

he gently takes the bags from her, re-organising the haphazardly thrown in items so that there was a bit more structure

some of the heaviest items he pockets until they can get upstairs to prevent the bag from breaking

he ties the bag that the handles had broken with a few of the left over items and offers Alpine an awkward smile

"All done."

he only gets a little sniffle in response

his heart breaks at her tear filled, tired eyes

she definitely wouldn't be able to make it up the stairs in this condition

he's have to try and calm her down

so, he kneels on the steps and gets her so sit a couple of steps ahead so that they were face to face

"What's wrong kid?"

her response is a mumbled mess and Bucky has never before been so grateful for the serum running through his veins than he was now

"It's so stupid. i just wanted to sleep but they made me go shopping because i ate some stale crackers last night and i didn't have enough money and they didn't tell me what they wanted they just gave me this and i can't read it so i couldn't get anything, they're gonna be mad at me!"

he frowns and gives her knee a gentle pat, taking the 'shopping list' she'd pulled out of the bag in the middle of her little ramble

it was ineligible

honestly if bucky had been given this he wouldn't know what to do with it

so it was a wonder that Alpine even managed to do any sort of shopping

he could make out a few things, but definitely not all of it

"Hey, you did good considering. Not even I could read thi-"

"I can't read."

"That's what I'm saying, i can't even make out-"

"No Bucky. I can't read. Or write. I can't do anything right! I'm so stupid and useless and-"

Bucky stops her by gently grabbing her hands

"You can't read?"

she looks so sad as she looks down, ashamed of admitting that she couldn't do what the other kids her age could do

"never been to school..."

bucky can't compute it

he always knew she didn't go to school

but he just didn't even consider the fact that she wasn't given a basic education

she spoke just fine

then again, she grew up with two adults who couldn't seem to stop scream at each other and god knows how much tv

he is furious at them and himself

why? he wasn't sure

but he knows he's close to his breaking point with this kid and the treatment she receives

he's angry and Alpine can tell

"...I'm sorry..."

he can't believe she's apologising for her own mistreatment

shaking his head, he moves his hand to give her head a little pat

"You did well kid, look at what you did. Can't read, but you got a whole lot of shopping for your family. You should be proud of yourself."

she's tearing up again and Bucky is panicking

"Really?"

he nods quickly, patting her head once more

"Really."

it takes a little time before she's ready to stand, she's still crying but it's calmed down

Bucky stands, wanting to get her home so she can rest

he picks up the shopping bags and glances down at Alpine as she stands and wipes her eyes, taking a few steps up, even more tired after her breakdown

he could just pick her up

it would be easier for them both

she looks so tired

but he doesn't want to over step

but she's exhausted

gently, Bucky leans forward and wraps an arm under her legs

she gives a little squeak as she's lifted, but sits quite comfortably on his arm

her small arms wrap around his neck, resting on his shoulders as he walks up the steps a lot faster than she's ever been able too

he's not surprised by how light she is

but he's terrified that even the slightest tense of his muscle would break a bone

despite that, he can't help but be tense, that is until she leans on him

the light weight on his chest gives him a sense of relief he can't describe

like a weighted blanket

Alpine can't help but relax in Bucky's arms

she's never been carried like this before

lifted sure, when she was in the way

but being carried like someone cares is a completely different feeling

and she relaxes for the first time in years, her head laying on his shoulder

tears fall at the overwhelming feeling

bucky assumes it's because she's tired - kids cry at stuff like that after all

he shushes her gently as he makes his way up, bumping her temple with his chin

"You're okay Alpine."

"You did good kid."

"Almost there."

it's nice, comforting

neither are ready for it to disappear but soon they find themselves on their floor

before bucky puts her down, he's shocked when she gives him a tight squeeze

what is this?

the answer: a hug

Alpine gives him the biggest hug she can muster before he puts her down gently

he is in shock

who knew the human touch could be so gentle

he smiles awkwardly at her, placing the shopping bags down letting her get inside and close the door before walking to his own

it opens just as hers does once again and he looks back

her parents throw her out

she's crying again as falls down against the railing

"Stay out of our sight for a while. Useless piece of-"

the door slams shut and the sound of the bolt locking in place echoes in the hall

her eyes are on her door and Bucky's remain on her

he's getting real sick of her parents

slowly, he steps towards her, slowly, carefully

as if she'd run away at any sudden movement

when he gets to her, he lifts her into his arm again, she resumed the position she'd been in not even three minutes ago

she's still crying as he takes her into his apartment

still crying as he lays her in the bedroom and covers her with a blanket, moving her matted hair out of her face

still crying until she falls asleep twenty minutes later, drained of any and all energy she had

he stays there for a while, brushing through her hair with his fingers, seemingly distracted by brushing a knot out

he only moves when it's getting dark and his stomach groans in complaint from the lack of food

he wakes her when it's ready, she barely manages a few bites of the meal he'd prepared before she's falling asleep again

he lets her, happy with the amount she'd eaten

he'd put the leftovers in a Tupperware box for later before letting her sleep again

when he was sure she was sound asleep once more, he moves to the living room to sleep on his couch

in the morning, he wakes to Alpine still asleep in the bedroom and begins on breakfast

it's nice

having someone to look after

he could get used to it

and when she shuffles out of the bedroom, rubbing her sore eyes that lighten up when she spots the food for them both he decides that yes, he definitely could get used to it

and that day, he starts the tedious job of working the matts and knots out of Alpine's hair - content with the look of pure joy on her face

The final straw for Bucky is a month later

he hadn't seen his neighbour in a month, but he'd heard her

heard her crying coughing

heard the slam of doors and shouts of her parents and their customers, all aimed at her

he's come close to knocking down their door before now

but he can't risk it

its not like he could just take her with him on the run

it wasn't fair to her

but would leaving her here be fair either?

it was all he'd been thinking about for the past month, holding himself back from waltzing in like a knight in shining armour

but Bucky Barnes wasn't a hero

he was an ex-assassin, hiding from people all over the world

he was destined to be alone

he needed to be alone

it was just safer

so why is it, that when he makes his way up to his apartment to find Alpine sat at his door, crying hysterically, all of that goes out the window

he hadn't seen her in a month

the last time he saw her, he'd managed to work out all of the knots in her hair and got her to take a bath, she looked healthy and happy

now though?

now, she was hunched over, face red, hair knotted and wild once again, covered in dirt and dried blood on the bottom of her feet, bruises covering her head to toe

the only thing stopping him from getting to her parents now his her reaching out for him

she whispers his name and he takes her into his arm instinctively

they don't say anything as Bucky brings them into the apartment and sits her on the couch, she whimpers at the loss of comfort

he grabs the first aid kit and wash cloth and bowl of hot water, sitting in front of her

he washes the dirt off of her, looking at new and old bruises which are healing

she seems happy just to have him near

slowly, he works his way down to her feet, worried about what he'd find

the cuts aren't deep, nor are they new

they seem to be healing okay - except one which still had broken glass in it

when he tries to pull it out, he realises she hadn't done it because of how much it had hurt

he shushes her gently, letting her squeeze his hand as he takes the glass out of her food and begins to treat it - easier said than done one handed

once he manages to wrap her foot sighing to himself before he sits in front of her and offers her a smile, asking what happened as he wipes her face with the cloth

"They don't want me anymore... I don't know what i did wrong... but they kept shouting at me and pushing me... father broke a bottle on the floor and I stepped in it by accident, tried to get it out but it hurt... it all hurts.. i don't want to go back."

she starts crying again and Bucky shushes her, pulling her into a hug which surprises them both

"he said i was selfish... that i was dirty... he- he said he was sick of my coughing but I can't-"

"It's okay... it's okay, you-"

is he really about to do this?

"you don't have to go back."

yes, yes he was

"You'll stay here with me from now on."

she looks up at him with wide, hopeful eyes

"Really?"

"Yeah... Yeah you stay here, and I'll- I'll look after you... if you want."

his heart stops when she smiles at him again, reaching up and hugging him

"I want to stay with you."

he wasn't sure what the future would hold for them

but as long as he stuck to his remaining rules, he's sure he'd be fine

that they would be fine

if they had to leave then they'd leave together

Alpine was light, he could carry her as far away as they needed to go

if needs be, maybe he'd tip off the Avengers himself, get Captain America to take care of her

that was a plan for the future though

for now, he'll look after this girl who for some reason decided that he was the one to trust

even if he didn't trust himself

he'd make changes to the apartment, safety measures for her to use should the worst happen

but for now, he'll give himself a chance to be happy

even if it's for a short while

A/N: We getting spoiled this week! I'm working out the schedule, but just for this week I've got a few extra posts to make up for my absence - hopefully you enjoy them all!

Anyway, here's a short, late-ish Valentines' Day special.

Warnings: Fluff, Bucky and Alpine's father-daughter dates, Sam and Bucky embarrassing Alpine like good father's should

Bucky and Alpine (+Sam) celebrate Valentines Day

There are many ways this day could go and have gone

The only constant throughout the years are that Alpine always gets Bucky and Sam flowers

and Bucky and Sam always get Alpine flowers

it started off as a competition, Bucky got Alpine flowers one year and Sam went out and bought a bigger bouquet

the next year, Sam bought a bouquet bigger than the one from the previous year, Bucky bought her two

so she basically gets given an entire flower shop but eventually she told them to knock it off

i mean, do you know how hard it is to look after and set up 30+ bouquets?

it's fucking difficult and she wasn't even getting paid to do it

now, if they all have significant others (unlikely because Bucky only has three contacts in his phone and one of those is his therapist) then they spend most of the day with them

Bucky and Alpine will always try to go out for food during the day

just a little father-daughter date

nothing major

Bucky denies it

Alpine has heart eyes and keeps telling everyone that the Winter Soldier is her dad

absolutely uses it to her advantage to get free cake

and to scare away dates

the most likely scenario though is that Bucky doesn't have a date, Sam does and Alpine's situation varies from moment to moment

if she doesn't have a date then she's all

"Bucky's all the Valentines I need"

"Unless Thor comes around cause goddamn"

"i'd stretch for Steven Strange too."

"or literally any Wakandan."

"Especially that M'Baku guy."

"Thanks Al."

if she does have a date

"I can cancel, i don't even know this man. I can just tell him to fuck off."

"I don't need some guy that I met randomly at work"

"At my bar job no less"

"Seriously Bucky, he ain't no M'Baku so-"

"Kid, shut up, go on your date."

"don't interrupt me you living fossil"

"fucking, rude grumpy ass"

once it's decided that yes, she will be going on her date

she drags him over to her place so he can keep her company whilst she get's ready

she'll aggressively sing songs at him

which bucky is very used to at this point

maybe force him into a little dancey-dance

which he'll say he hates but very much enjoys it

spins her at some point and dips her

she'll also cook him dinner, because if he's gunna be alone then she'll be damned if its not with a hot meal

Bucky won't admit it, but he loves when she cooks because it reminds him of coming home to a family and a food on the table made by someone who loves him

also it means he doesn't have to cook

when she's ready, she's normally a ball of confidence (apart from the time she dated a young history professor - she was a wreck)

so he doesn't need to give her a pep talk or anything

which is good because he doesn't exactly know how to tell a girl he hopes she gets laid?

bit of weird thing to say to his young neighbour who he views as a daughter

when her date comes to pick her up, he's standing right behind her glaring at the guy

sizing him up, committing his face to memory just in case

"okay, we'll be off now, lock my door for me would you Buck"

she'll lean up (thats a lie, she practically drags him so he lowers himself to her height) and kiss his cheek goodnight before taking her dates arm and smiling

as he's locking her door with his spare key (they'd given each other spare keys in cases of emergency but lets be honest Alpine uses them whenever she wants) he'll over hear a bit of their conversation which normally revolved around him

"It that-"

"No"

"It is!"

"It's not."

"You know the Winter Soldier?!"

"He's not the Winter Soldier."

That conversation normally tells him that the date isn't going to go well

he knew she hated when a date would focus on that aspect of him

like for fucks sake man is actually a living time machine

and alpine knows a lot about him

ask better questions

whilst she's on her date, he'll sit at home and watch movie recommendations from her and Sam

he'll read

listen to music

drink beer that will definitely not get him drunk

when Alpine comes back, he'll send her a text to make sure she's safe

he used to check on her by opening the door but she once caught her and an ex boyfriend in a rather

awkward

position to say the least

they couldn't look at each other for a week after that and bucky had very quickly learnt his lesson

if the dates gone well then he won't get a response until later that night

if it goes okay then it normally means there will be a second date before anything happens between the pair

if the night is bad, then Bucky had received the text first and had gone out to pick her up from wherever the date was

we love a protective dad

on the nights that don't end with Alpine in her place getting lucky (which is most years up until she meets the before mentioned professor - i've got a fucking plan for these two i swear)

they sit together on Bucky's couch, drinking beer and teasing each other

Alpine is normally still dressed up at this point

"Bucky rub my feet"

"fuck no"

"oh c'mon you're supposed to be a 40s gentleman"

"and you're supposed to be a lady, put the dogs away"

"i fucking sWEAR TO GOD I GOT NICE FEET BARNES"

"jar."

her unhinged and outlandish outbursts had led to Bucky getting a 'swear jar' of sorts

she'd have to put a dollar in for every one

"Fucking... jar you in a minute

"Nice threat Al"

"Grandpa, I swear to god"

"Which one"

now sometimes Sam will join them if he doesn't have a date but come on

you can't tell me that Sam Wilson

Captain America

doesn't have a Valentines' date

he isn't a social recluse like a certain Steve Rogers

Now, Bucky and Sam are very protective fathers

nobody can tell me otherwise

you also can't tell me that they wouldn't be the biggest fucking teases in the world

every valentines day, without fail, Alpine gets a video message from Sam

It's of him and Bucky, giving her "advice"

"This Valentine's Day here's a couple of things from a couple of guys"

Bucky looks physically pained the first few times she'd been sent it

"Rule number one, always make sure to give a gift instead of receive one, thats makes you a good person."

Sam is very obviously loving this, every single year

"rule number two, be yourself always and forever with anyone and everyone"

"that's very nice. Always, Always remember rule number one"

"but always keep in mind rule number two"

"number two has heart too"

"at the end of the day it takes two to make things right"

it was an ongoing joke that alpine was ready to end

especially when they sent it to the professor boyfriend on their first valentines day together

"I am.... so sorry"

"It's okay, love, it'd endearing"

"it's embarrassing"

"they care about you"

"i'm going to end them"

"one thing before you do, how did they get my number?"

poor baby forgot who he was dating for a hot second there

little does he know he's going to be cockblocked most valentines' by James Barnes

this poor man just wants to swoop Alpine off her feet and treat her like a queen

Bucky's sat there like a little gremlin with a beer and a smug little grin

he ain't ready to be an actual grandpa just yet

especially if the kid takes after Alpine

50/50 is just too much of a risk at that point

has 100% convinced Sam to crash one of their dates before now

Sam agrees but has a moment of clarity in the middle of it

"You ever think that we hang around this kid too much?"

Bucky's sat there with sunglasses looking through a newspaper with eye holes cut out

"No."

they're in one of the fanciest restaurants in New York and Bucky looks like a cartoon villain

"What happened to you man?"

"Parenthood."

he's joking, partially

he loves Alpine and the professor is the only boyfriend of hers he's like for her

but

Until the day comes where Alpine meets that man, Bucky is her main Valentine's bitch

and he makes sure of it

he really, really hates all of Alpine's ex-boyfriends

So we get to see a little bit more of Alpine's character, other than the absolute chaotic mess that she was introduced as. This ended up being a lot more angsty than I wanted it, but I like how it went, Alpine's character needed a bit more development.

warnings: some absolute pure unfiltered fluff and angst (mainly angst), Alpine being a little sweetheart, Bucky nearly cries (for good reasons), mentions of both Bucky's and Alpine's trauma, an extremely angsty father's day (i am so sorry it just sort of happened)

Alpine's First Father's Day Celebration

Now, mother's day was a success. Much to Bucky's disappointment, Alpine and Sam had gone out for dinner that night, wanting some 'mother-daughter' bonding

Sam outright refused to acknowledge it as such

but seeing these two bond and grow closer over this celebration, Bucky was nervous about father's day

would he say he thought of Alpine as a daughter?

yes

does he think he deserves the absolute pleasure to be considered her father?

no

he did a lot of bad things in his past life and a part of him

a very small but frustrating part of him

would do it all again if it meant that Alpine would be in his life

it scared him and he hated that part of him

the part that was okay hurting people as long as Alpine was in his life one way or another

it was this type of thought that would cause Bucky to fear that the Winter Soldier still remained within him

despite everything he had done and all the help he had received, no matter how many therapy sessions he went to or how many people he apologised to

he still thought of himself as a monster

and he wasn't sure he'd think of himself any other way

which is why, on the days leading up to the first father's day they would celebrate together

Bucky avoided Alpine

she was livid

normally, she could just walk into his apartment

unafraid of him kicking her out, or of him attacking her out of pure instinct

she knew he wouldn't hurt her on purpose

or at least, she thought he wouldn't

so when she skipped across the hall, put her hand on the handle to twist and push it open, only the faceplant into the locked door

she was fuming

"JAMES BUCHANAN BARNES"

was her nose bleeding?

oh most definitely

after going back into her own apartment to stuff her nose full of tissues, she steps back out into the hall, knocking on the door

once

twice

thrice

"Bucky? You in there old man?"

silence

honestly, this man

she checks her phone in case he had gone on a mission late last night but normally he'd wake her

he knows she worries about him

when three more knocks went unanswered, she called Sam

he hadn't heard from him either

but he had heard that Bucky asked for an emergency therapy session

which surprised her because Bucky HATED going to those

"Sam, I'm real worried. His door is locked, LOCKED! I'm just looking for the spare key now then i can-"

"Hey, you still haven't gotten him a father's day present, why don't you run into the city today and see what you can get? I'll meet you later on, I just need to do something first."

she wasn't stupid

she knew what Sam was doing

she knew what he was thinking

Bucky had relapsed

impossible

Bucky would not have relapsed, not after everything that had happened with Zemo and the flag-smashers

after all the stress he had been through in those first few months of them meeting, everything that happened with Yori...

no

Bucky Barnes had not relapsed

he just needed some time to himself

to be reminded of who he was

and who he wasn't

what he wasn't

"Alpine? Al, you there kid?"

"Yeah! Sorry! I just panicked for a minute because I totally forgot i hadn't got him a present, thanks for the reminder. You'll check in on him right? Before you come and meet me?"

she could feel Sam's tension be released when she responded

"Yeah, yeah. You know, he's probably just being a little princess, jealous of all the time we're spending together. You know how much of a drama queen he can be."

Alpine can't smile at the joke

not when she knows it's only there to try and trick her into a false sense of relief

no, she wasn't stupid.

but she'd play the part anyway.

"Tell me about it, never thought I'd see a 106 year old super soldier be jealous of little ol' me, guess I'm just that amazing"

they say goodbye and Alpine takes one last glance at Bucky's door

worth a try

"Buck... I don't know if you can hear me, you might be in your room. If you are then you know, fuck you for making me talk to myself."

on the other side of the door, Bucky smiles

"I just... I want you to know that you're okay... and it's okay to not be okay... but you are. I know you are. Whatever this is, it'll pass and you'll work through it because you're James fucking Barnes and..." She pauses for a second because jesus christ

she is deadass about to tell Bucky she loves him

that he is her family

that he is her hero

that she would do anything for him

but she can't

because she would actually die of embarrassment

Alpine is not good at emotions

"a-and so, get your shit together, because i'm not giving up until you remember that James Barnes ain't no ones bitch!"

with that she very quickly leaves because ew, emotions

Bucky can't help but smile at her words of encouragement as he listens to the sounds of her footsteps getting further away, the elevator dinging as it opens for her, the almost silent, barely there sob that leaves her mouth as those same doors close

it's an hour later that he breaks out of the shock he was in when Sam knocks on the door, frantically calling for Bucky to open the goddamn door

he does and can't even register that Sam is furious with him for going no contact with both him and Alpine for two days

and Bucky stands there and takes the verbal abuse

because he made her cry

and he deserves Sam's angry shouts

and he needs him to knock some sense into him

because if Bucky knew one thing after hours of torturing himself with hateful thoughts

it was that he never wanted to be the reason for Alpine's tears

ever again

Now, Alpine hadn't meant to cry

in fact she was pretty sure that the last time she cried at something not induced by stress or laughing to hard

she was a child

back at home with... them

and she will be damned if she ever cried about anything not stress induced ever again

so in the short elevator ride to the lobby of their building, she had straightened herself out, wiped her tears and faced the city with a determined attitude

she would find Bucky a present that reminded him of who he was

she had introduced him to a lot of things in the 21st century

but nothing seemed to connect

that was until they watched The Hobbit, of course Alpine ended up falling asleep and Bucky stayed up like an actual maniac to watch all the movies in a span of 9+ hours (with bathroom breaks, he was sure he could have binged it but he also wanted to put Alpine to bed, so ended up having to pause it just to tuck her into his bed before returning to finish the movies)

She had heard Sam say that Bucky had claimed to have read the book when it first came out

when she heard that, she'd been looking at trying to get a first edition book for her dear friend and father figure

keeping tabs and making friends with local antique bookshop owners just to be able to get a chance.

what harm would it do to do the rounds whilst she brain stormed some other ideas for him

on her trip, she'd managed to get a few books she thought he'd might like

the harry potter series, eragon, the lion, the witch and the wardrobe

she would spoil him with love and affection (a very different route to Sam who was cursing Bucky out at this point)

the first few shops had unfortunately been duds in her search for the first edition Hobbit book, and she had started debating on just getting him a newer version of the series until the last shop she walked in

"Ah! I was just about to call you missy! I have that booked you've been looking for!"

She could have screamed

she did scream

so loud the other patrons thought she was actually getting stabbed

"NO YOU DON'T!"

she couldn't believe her luck! on the day she truly really needed it, she had found a first edition book, one exactly like the one Bucky would have owned

the yellowing pages, hardback cover, faded title

used, loved, a timeless piece of history

sure the pages were slightly ripped, it had very obviously been well loved but still preserved

as she looked through the pages, she smiles at the pencil marks - whoever had this book must have loved it

the only issue was the price

"$200?! I can't persuade you to lower that?"

"It's a rare collectable my dear, if you don't get it now, someone else will."

Alpine had the money

she had savings for rainy days and emergency funds just in case the worst happened

again, she wasn't stupid

but $200 on a book?

she sighed once again, flicking through the pages

could she really justify spend-

hold on a hot damn second

was that

she frowns, looking at the faded hand written ink

"Sorry, can I borrow your glasses?"

the old bookstore owner nods, allowing the girl to use the glasses to look at the name handwritten on the cover page

Alpine had never handed money over so fast

out of all the first edition books to get, she had managed to somehow find Bucky's copy

it belonged to him and she would have sold her entire soul to the devil just to be able to get that man his own property back

she had to get back to him

father's day was in a couple of days but this discovery could not wait and if Bucky Barnes had his door locked still then Alpine was grabbing the emergency axe in the hall way to smash that mans door down

she never ran faster in her life

that was a lie (but a story for another time)

by this point, it had been a fair few hours.

Sam had been and gone, having knocked some sense into Bucky before leaving to report that he had in fact NOT relapsed into the Winter Soldier

Now, the grumpy old man waited outside his apartment for Alpine to get back, sighing and huffing with every minute that passed, pacing back and forth, watching the elevator move between floors

he had heard the door to the stairs slam open, the panting and gasping before the rapid footsteps and a frantic

"BUCKY!"

He turned, running down the hallway and crashing into the young girl, grabbing her and stabling them as he hugged her

"Al, I'm so sorry kid. I can't explain what happened, but I promise I will never-"

"Bucky shut up and listen to me."

rude

he frowns at her, like the fucking audacity

"I'm trying to apologise for being a jackass here."

"Oh, well in that case- carry on mr i'm going to ignore my best friend in the entire world."

"I heard you crying-"

"Oh fucking ew never mind."

he sighs, grabbing her face gently in his hands as she tries to full away because ew fucking emotions

he smiles at her, watching as she relaxes, confusion on her face before her breathe hitches when he places a gentle and very hesitant kiss on her head

"Al, I can't promise that something like that will never happen again, because my brain is messed up, I'm messed up" He shushes her when she tries to interrupt him, smiling at her

"But, I can promise, that as soon as I come out of that.. place.. I will make it up to you in every way possible. You, my annoying little neighbour, are one of the best things that's ever happened to me and I'll be damned if i ever make you cry again. If I do, you can beat me to a pulp."

they both laugh because Alpine can't fight for shit

she wouldn't even know where to start

"Can I make you watch Real Housewives instead?"

"Anything you want."

They definitely spend about ten minutes just hugging each other

they spent two whole days apart, these touch starved babies are desperate just to know that they still have each other

Eventually, they move to Bucky's apartment, deciding that they deserved a good movie night and they still had to watch the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World franchise (they'd been putting it off for a few weeks because Bucky wasn't convinced that a movie on dinosaurs would be something he was interested in - but Alpine seemed to enjoy it_

Alpine had managed to get distracted by the dinos, laughing and letting Bucky know of the inaccuracies of the franchise

Bucky had managed to calm down, keeping an arm around Alpine, not wanting to let her go just yet, still feeling awful about having made her cry

it wasn't until Bucky mentioned that he did enjoy the fantasy side of the franchise that Alpine gasped and sat up straight from leaning on Bucky

he frowns and watched her as she runs to her bag dumped by the door

he was going to her a coat rack just so she'd stop dumping her coat and bags on the floor as soon as she got in

"Were you in here, when I spoke to you through the door?"

Bucky glances at her

"Depends, do you want me to have been here?"

Alpine thinks back and then nods, "For the last part"

Bucky grins, "Bucky Barnes ain't no ones bitch?"

Alpine grins back, "Bucky Barnes is his own bitch, with his own bitchin' thoughts and his own personality and likes and dislikes'" she nods firmly grabbing the book from her bag

"And, Bucky Barnes, has his own goddamn property back."

she holds it out to him and he pauses, eyebrows furrowed before he takes the book

"Al, you didn't have to-"

"Shut up, and open it. Cover page."

he does and he freezes

this was the book he had shipped over from Britain when it first came out

this was the book that he read at night

this was the book he reread for months

this was the book he left behind when he was sent over to Britain for active duty

this was HIS book

his past

his memories

his handwriting

it had survived all these years

it had survived and somehow so had he

and as he looks at Alpine, who was nervously ranting about how she just saw it and knew he had to have it back, how it was a father's day present albeit early

he knew he was going to be okay, just as she had said

If a piece of his past had managed to survive this long without being put on display in a glass case in a museum, without being caged or made to do something other than it's purpose

then he can continue to heal outside of influence of third parties

she's still ranting as he stands, making his way over to her and wrapping her in his arms, holding her tightly, his flesh hand delicately running through her hair as his tears build

he forces them back, not wanting to panic his neighbour turned daughter

he feels her arms hesitantly wrap around his waist, though she's still tense

one day he'll find out why, he'll find out her real name and he'll help her heal like she had him (more than she would ever truly know)

but for now, he'll cherish the relationship he shares with Alpine, and he'll celebrate every father's day with her, with no worries on whether or not he deserves to have this

because one thing is for sure

Alpine does not care whether or not Bucky Barnes deserves her affection, she want's to give it and that's what she will do. Whether he likes it or not (spoiler alert - he loves it and he loves her)

"So if we could spend next years father's day not in a maybe kind of argument that would be great, because this was a really emotionally exhausting day and I don't think we need to do this type of thing for a hot while."

"Of course. If Sam asks, Father's day was better than mother's day."

"Sure, sure, so long as you say I found that book in a dump because i spent maybe $30 on Sam and $200 is a lot more."

Bucky laughs and nods before processing her words

"$200?!"

and as Bucky tightened their hug and Alpine started nervously laughing and trying to get away from him to avoid this punishment (is it really though?)

The Many Lives of Bucky and Alpine | Main Masterlist

This one is more focused around Sam and Alpine's relationship.

How Alpine Celebrates Mother's Day

Now, Alpine does not have the best relationship with her parents.

Why else would she have immediately gotten herself adopted by an ex-assassin? (or did she adopt him?)

So when she met Bucky, and he started doing little things for her and supporting her in a way a father would, she buckled.

she immediately started thinking of ways to celebrate father's day for him

But then when Sam entered the picture, Alpine had a moment of realisation at 2am whilst watching big foot documentaries

she had Bucky

strong, protective, grumpy old ass who would put himself between her and any threat that popped up in her shenanigans

and she had Sam

sassy, enthusiastic Sam who encouraged her shenanigans

she had a whole family dynamic going on and she was going to celebrate that

for the first time in her life, she had a family and she wanted to show them both how much she appreciated them letting her be in their lives

lets be honest, she didn't give them a choice

but she could still show her love for them

now she didn't know what days to celebrate each person, she just knew she wanted to give them each their own day

so one day (quite literally mother's day - Alpine lost track of time and procrastinated too long), Sam and Bucky are at the latter's apartment, just chilling having a guys night

catching Bucky up on all the movies he's missed

having a couple of beers

just two friends, relaxing, laughing, having a good time

peaceful

until Hurricane Alpine struck

She came barrelling in, bags in hand that she was trying and failing to hide

balloons floating behind her she she kept trying to pull down behind her back

hair an absolute wreck, out of breath and trying to play it off

"Oh hey i didn't know you'd both be here what a surprise"

"Alpine you made us download a collective calendar, you know damn well it's guys night"

"shut up you love that app"

she struggles to get a coin out of her pocket, cursing at the balloons hitting her in the face and dropping the bags

"Uh.. you need a hand there Al?"

"NO IT'S FINE"

punches the balloons into the hallway and turns with a wild smile

"Flip the coin"

Sam is scared

Bucky is confused and debating whether or not he should put a restraining order in

"why?"

"no reason"

"well there is a reason obviously"

"no, no reason"

"i think there is a reason, what are you going to do"

"why do you assume i'm up to something?"

"the last time you made us flip a coin with no context you sold Bucky's arm"

"Hey when a blue lady comes knocking on your door looking for a gift for her raccoon friend, you oblige"

"do you know how LONG it took for me to get my arm?!"

"you're being so dramatic you literally got it back a few days later"

"I didn't get it back, Shuri made me a new one."

"Even better"

"She keeps texting me warnings about raccoons"

"She's looking out for you"

Sam is loving this, he remembers the day he walked in on Bucky frantically looking for his arm whilst Alpine sat on his couch cry-laughing out of pure stress and enjoyment.

Though they were slightly concerned by the fact that a) Nebula came to Alpine to get the arm and b) Rocket now had cybernetically enhanced piece of Vibranium.

safe to say Alpine was in trouble for a while

"Can you just- will you flip the coin? I'm not going to sell any appendages or organs to otherworldly beings."

"When did you sell organs?"

".... What organs?"

With that knowledge, Sam and Bucky flipped the coin, Sam calling heads whilst it was in the air, with it landing on his call.

victorious, he grimaces and looks at Alpine

"You can't have my wings."

"I don't need 'em, you wait here. I will be back"

grins and runs out, half tripping over the forgotten balloons as she goes and running into her door in the process.

Bucky decides to pray for Sam whilst the latter looks at him nervously

"I should be worried, shouldn't I?"

Bucky sighs and shrugs, "It's Alpine."

it's silent for a little while, they can hear loud shuffling and curses coming from across the hall

"Yes, be worried"

Sam is debating whether or not to run now or just accept his fate

it's too late though, because Alpine comes rushing back over with a card, some flowers, the balloons that had been poorly hidden behind her back and a box of chocolates

both men are seriously confused, but Bucky is also slightly annoyed

sure, Sam wins a coin flip and gets flowers, Bucky wins a coin flip and get's his arm stolen

makes sense

"Happy mother's day Sammy!"

"What"

"OH MY GOD"

Bucky is no longer annoyed, laughing and grinning at Sam

Sam is confused

when did he become a mother

when did he sign up for this

"Al what-"

"I know, I know. But I never-.." she pauses, handing Sam his gifts before shuffling, Bucky stops laughing at this point because he knows when Alpine is about to dump some trauma

"I never had a good relationship with my family and it's mothers day today and I was like I could just celebrate you two on father's day but you've both helped and supported me in different ways and you don't deserve to share a holiday besides you'll just argue, so i thought this was a better way and-"

"AL!"

She huffs and glares at them both

how dare they interrupt her nervous ranting

didn't they know its the only way she could c o p e

Bucky grins at her, glancing at Sam as the latter stands and gives her a tight hug

Alpine is surprised, she genuinely thought Sam would be annoyed but hugs him back anyway

is kind of embarrassed and awkward

poor baby is not hugged often

but relaxes soon enough when she spots Bucky smiling at the pair on the couch

Sam's hand rubbing soothing circle on her back before they pull apart and he grins at her

"Thank you kid. Really. I'm- I'm happy you think of me as your family, you know I'll always be hear to support you."

"Aww thanks mama goose"

Bucky snorts

literally a few months ago this man thought Alpine was a cat

now look at them

Alpine is positively glowing

she literally could not contain herself and she goes back in for another hug, laughing as Sam begs her not to call him any type of nickname

"I'm serious, do not call me mum in public."

"Are falcon's motherly?"

"I regret so much"

"Aw man am I getting disowned already?"

"Yeah no, you've done it now. You're my kid forever now bitch"

"Sammy you can't call your kid a bitch"

"I can if its affectionate"

Sam is buzzing, despite now having to reject every mother bird pun Alpine makes, shaking his head at all of her new bird pun name suggestions

He didn't like to admit it, but he was always somewhat jealous

sure he was friends with Steve before, but it always felt like Steve and Bucky.. and Sam

and then with Alpine it was Bucky and Alpine... and Sam

but now he had Bucky

and he had Alpine

he had a family here in New York

and he loved them

would he admit that?

no, he would actually rather cease to exist once more

but he knew they knew

an unspoken bond between the three of them that all three would die protecting

as if they would ever let Alpine do that though, she cuts her finger just trying to slice an apple and he and Bucky go absolutely insane

but they make this an annual celebration, though Sam refuses to admit it is for mother's day

What If Bucky Met Alpine in Bucharest

Welcome to what I'll be calling the Civil War!Alpine timeline.
