summer sun for you forever
For @badthingshappenbingo. Prompt: fevers
Tumblr media
Azula had disappeared into darkness. Aang saved the kids of the Fire Nation. Kiyi and Ursa were finally getting along again. But, things seemingly never worked out for Zuko.
"Zuzu?"
Zuko wasn't sure when he had finally given up on the paperwork and gone to bed, but given the lack of sunlight streaming through the windows, it was not long enough for it to be considered an usual amount of sleep.
That was before he factored in the fact that most of the Fire Nation no longer wanted him off of the throne, the scratchiness in his throat that had started the night before and Kiyi pushing on his bicep to wake him up.
Again.
"Zuzu. Are you awake?"
"No, I'm sleeping. Like you should be."
"You're talking, so you're awake," she argued while crawling over so she was in her face, "I heard you coughing."
"I wasn't-" he sat up, only for the scratchiness to go over the edge, sending him doubling over as the coughs made his chest burn.
When he finally caught his breath, he was met with a raised eyebrow from Kiyi that she had definitely picked up from either Sokka or Katara but the persistent exhaustion made it impossible to ask as he laid back down on the uncomfortably warm pillows.
"Do you want me to get mommy? She's really good at helping people feel better."
Right. Kiyi was here, which meant that his mother was asleep in the palace and unaware of any of this; he swallowed down the scratchiness and shook his head, "she needs to sleep, Kiyi. So do you."
"But you're sick."
"Come on," he sat up, coughing a few times into his elbow before offering his other hand to her, "let's get you back in bed."
"But what if 'zula comes back? I don't wanna go with her." Kiyi shook her head as she stamped her foot on the ground in defiance with her arms crossed.
He couldn't bring himself to argue with her, unsurprised that she had become a monster in Kiyi's closet; it had only been a few days since Azula had fled into the woods after kidnapping the majority of the fire nation children.
Their mother hadn't let her sleep in her own bed the night after they got her back and was visibly on edge after she or Ikem would put Kiyi to bed. Zuko had even found himself peeking into her room at night to make sure she was still there.
"Azula is not coming back, Kiyi," Zuko assured her as he stood up, holding onto the bed frame for a moment as the world spun around him, before holding his hand back out to her, "and even if she did, everyone is keeping an eye out. She wouldn't be able to get to you, I promise."
"Okay," she admitted defeat and pressed her small palm into his, allowing him to lead her back to her room, "are you gonna tell Mommy? That you're sick?"
And that question penetrated right through Zuko's foggy mind, because he wasn't sure; he hadn't been taken care of by his mother since he was a child, since before Lu Ten had died and even though a small part of him so desperately craved that comfort, it had been years.
"I'm gonna go back to sleep," he decided as he lifted Kiyi into her bed before tucking her in and stopping himself from kissing her forehead, "you should too. I'll see you in the morning."
"Good night, Zuzu." She yawned, rubbing her eyes as she laid down.
"Good night, Kiyi." He whispered back and took a quick glance over the room, just to be sure, before making his way back to his room on shaking legs with the hope of getting another few hours of sleep.
When he awoke again to the sun shining through his windows and onto his face, everything felt worse.
The scratchiness in Zuko's throat had elevated to a swollen ache, the cough felt heavy in his lungs and sitting up felt like an impossible chore due to the pounding in his temples; there was no denying it, he was sick and it was bad.
The last time he had been nearly this sick had been in Ba Sing Se, but he highly doubted that this was another war of the mind given the lack of nightmares involving dragons and Air Nomad tattoos.
So, despite the throbbing in his head, he pulled himself to his feet and slowly changed into his royal robes while hoping that there wasn't a heavy workload for him to attend to today.
After tying his hair up with the crown pushed into the hairbow, despite the top knot adding to the pressure in his head, he made his way to the dining room.
What he wasn't expecting as he walked in was such a tight hug from Kiyi around his legs that he nearly fell over before she looked up at him and said, "I told mommy that you were sick."
Zuko kept his hand on Kiyi's back as his mother approached slowly and rested her hand against his scarred cheek, his back going ridgid at the touch while she brushed a few stray hairs away from his eyes before resting her hand on his shoulder.
"Kiyi wasn't kidding. You're feverish, Zuko."
"Why would I make that up?" Kiyi questioned, finally letting go of his wobbly legs to raise an eyebrow at Ursa, the same way she had at him last night.
"Finish your breakfast, sweetheart," Ursa insisted, reaching down to run a few fingers through her hair before turning back to him, "you should lay back down."
" 'm busy, mom," he managed to choke out, his voice much hoarser than he expected, "Fire Lord stuff."
"I see," Ursa nodded, her hand still lingering on his shoulder as she turned to face one of his advisors, "Lin, can you rearrange the Fire Lord's schedule so it is only essential and urgent matters for the next few days? It would be in the best interest of the Fire Nation if my son spent some time in the infirmary."
"Mom-" Zuko started, only for his chest to rebel and send him into another coughing fit that left his vision spinning.
"I think the basis for my case was just made by the Fire Lord himself."
"Very well, Lady Ursa." Lin bowed in their direction before exiting through the other doorway in the large dining room.
With the way Kiyi was proudly showing off her trick of tossing sliced strawberries in the air and catching them in her mouth with Noren's attention on her, Zuko knew that there was no other option then defeat as his mother rested her hand on his upper back and gently nudged him toward the palace infirmary.
"Let's get you taken care of."
Ursa hadn't been back in the Fire Nation for a full month and Zuko had already fallen ill.
Admittedly, she wasn't that surprised; her son had always been more sickly than Azula, seemingly catching every single virus that made its way into the walls of the palace.
However, her hands still hadn't returned to a normal warmth from one of her daughters kidnapping the other and that was before Kiyi had woken her up by jumping on her bed and proclaiming, "Hi, mommy, Zuzu's sick."
Which led her to where she was now, gently taking down her son's top knot in his bedroom, after their visit to the infirmary, while he shivered under her touch.
"I'm sorry, sweetheart." She murmured as she laid the crown on the table before gently holding onto his arm as he maneuvered onto his back.
"Not your fault," he insisted, his hoarse voice cracking as he rested his hot cheeks onto the pillow, "Kiyi was just trying to help."
"I know she was, she cares a lot about her big brother."
There was a brief smile on his lips, although it looked more like a grimace, before his eyes fluttered shut and his breathing, despite being tinged with a wheeze, evened out.
The court physician had been confident in Zuko's recovery, which helped some of Ursa's fear ebb away, but the damp cloth that she used to wipe the sweat from her son's forehead was just as cold as her palms.
He hadn't been asleep for more than a few minutes when there was a soft knock on the wooden door, one that could only belong to her daughter; Ursa folded the cloth and rested it on her son's forehead before making her way to the door and opening it.
"I wanna see Zuzu."
"Kiyi, he needs to rest," Ursa insisted, kneeling down so she was eye to eye with her, "he's sick, remember?"
"Can I help?"
And with brown eyes full of a mix of worry and pleading, Ursa couldn't help but relent; she knew that in doing so, she increased Kiyi's chances of contracting the same illness but at the same time she was aware of just how close the two of them had grown in the few months of knowing each other.
"You have to let him sleep, okay?"
She nodded without any sort of rebuttal and reached up for Ursa.
She picked her daughter up before returning to Zuko's bedside and used the cloth to wipe away the buildup of sweat that had gathered in her brief absence.
A coughing fit broke through the silence, making Kiyi flinch back against her chest, but Ursa just held onto her tightly while reaching over to firmly rub his back so his lungs could work out some of the congestion.
"Is he gonna be okay, mommy?" Kiyi whispered, her hands wrapped tightly in the fabric of her dress.
"The doctor said he will be," Ursa assured, trying to force herself to believe the words despite how much every single wheeze made her hands grow colder and colder, "it might take a few days though, for him to feel better."
"Mommy?"
"Yes, sweetheart?"
"Maybe Katara can help, with her water bending."
She wasn't sure how her daughter had thought of sending for the powerful member of the Southern Water Tribe, the same teenager who was part of the small group of Zuko's friend group that included the Avatar himself, but all she could do was wonder why she hadn't thought of it first.
"That's a very good idea, Kiyi," Ursa praised before turning to the guard that was stationed outside of the door, "Tao? Can you send for Master Katara?"
"Of course, Lady Ursa."
Zuko's head was pounding when he woke up to the all too familiar cold hovering over his chest, the confirmation that Katara was trying to heal him; from what, he couldn't remember until he blinked a few times only to feel a flare of pain in his raw, inflamed throat.
"Do you have a six of earth?"
"Go fish!"
"Ugh," he heard Aang groan before pleading, "can we please play something else?"
"We can try Pai Sho again."
Zuko blinked and looked upwards.
"Hey there," Katara greeted softly with her water-covered hands still hovering over his chest, "welcome back to the land of the living."
He tried to speak, but throat was stinging and his lungs constricted into a coughing fit that filled his eyes with tears from the burning in his chest as it forced him to sit up.
"Easy, easy," Katara's voice broke through the sound of the coughs wracking his body as she held him upright and a now dry hand firmly pat his back, "try and breathe, Zuko."
And given how hard he was coughing, he would argue that he did try his best to breathe, but it was only when the coughing fit started to subside that he could finally pull a substantial amount of oxygen into his lungs.
"Here," Kiyi's voice cut through his deep breaths, forcing him to turn his head to see her holding a glass of water, "Mommy said you had to drink something when you woke up."
He took the glass in his shaking hand and started sipping at the cold water, letting it temporarily sooth the stinging in his throat before letting his questioning about why Katara and Aang were there allow itself to be visible on his face.
"Your mother sent for me, asking if I could heal you. Given the coughing fit, though, you can see how well that's going."
"Also, Kiyi cheats at Go Fish," Aang added as he showed his face from behind Katara, "and she's really good at Pai Sho."
"I don't cheat!" Kiyi shouted with her hands on her hips, making his head throb, "and Uncle Iroh taught me how to play, he said I'm better than Zuzu at board games."
"Because you have the patience for-" Zuko retorted, but his chest rebelled again and made him cough again, forcing him to sip at the water once again as the burning spread through his lungs.
"Maybe you should stop talking." Katara suggested as she took the empty glass from him and set it on the bedside table before gently pressing him back down onto the pillows.
Zuko nodded, his eyelids already growing heavy again as the familiar cold of healing covered his forehead.
"Can I help?"
Zuko opened his right eye to see Kiyi making eye contact with him, unable to hold back his response with a smirk. "Did you become a waterbender recently?"
"No, I'm a firebender, silly," despite how awful he felt, his little sister's smile was infectious as she climbed up onto the bed, "and that means I'm super warm."
With that, she promptly leaned against him with her head against his collarbone and wrapped her arms around his left side; she wasn't wrong about being warm, it was a common fact about all firebenders.
But due to the fever that was wreaking havoc on him, he couldn't help but relish in the warmth and hold her closer as the cold water once again covered his aching head.
"Go to sleep, Zuzu. We can take care of you."
He didn't have the energy to fight against her statement and let his eyes flutter shut once again, taking in the comforting sound of her steady breathing beside him, allowing himself to feel safe in her presence.

I FINALLY FIGURED OUT!
you guessed it. ATLA THEORY TIME!!!!
Remember this scene?
Tumblr media
Azula was able to trick Toph in this scene, and I think it's not because her heart is cold (wink at the antis and shows my middle finger) nor she has her breathing under control, nor because she is just this manipulative.
I think it's because of the addition of so much unnecessary and unknown information for Toph. She includes 3 colour names and her "height", wich I severely doubt it was even taught for Toph. Also, she was describing the shape on an animal differently of what it looks like, wich would have to include Toph's imagination for her to figure how the fuck it looked- wich is also a hint. Toph doesn't know how a platypus-bear looks like. She can tell its weight probably, and its general shape and form, but not how it looks.
Therefore, I think Toph was mostly stunned by the clear discrepancy of what she was sensing, what was being described and especially the riddled information.

Hello! I am totally new to reading Zukka and would love some recommendations. If you've already done this, please feel free to just link to another post! I would love a few recs of what you consider to be "must-reads". I'm open to any length or rating (although I tend to read rated E), I would just love to start with a few that are phenomenal :)
Hi stavro!
Welcome to the wonderful world of Zukka fics!
Here's a Zukka starter pack for you, I limited it to 10 fics to stop it from getting too unwieldy, but it was really difficult to keep it so short tbh, so if you want more lmk!
Zukka Must-Reads
Blue by blacklipscurse
Available on Ao3, Complete (Part 1), Teen, Slowburn, Canon-Divergence, Canon-Typical Violence, Blue Spirit Zuko, Secret Indentities, Ba Sing Se, Angst, H/C, Homophobia, Physical Disability, Humour / Humor
Wordcount: 192,682
This fic is a whole damn phenomenon in this fandom and it's phenomenal to match! The way the characters are written really draws you in. It's a very emotive fic and I truly cannot emphasise how funny blacklipscurse's writing is, I laughed a lot. Especially at Zuko, and sometimes Sokka. 😅 There is a sequel but it's a WIP and Blue can stand alone. :)
absence of heat, excess of destiny by theycallmesuperboy / @baegarrick
Available on Ao3, Complete, Gen, Canon-Compliant, Alternate Universe - Soulmate, AU - Soulmate-Identifying Marks
Wordcount: 4,336
Absolute classic, and I love soulmate fics so for me this is top tier.
Real Slow by surveycorpsjean (Ao3) / zanimez (Tumblr)
Available on Ao3, Complete, Mature, Post-Canon, Fluff, Smut, H/C, Angst, Ambassador Sokka
Wordcount: 21,490
The way their relationship gently unfurls in this is very satisfying. Highly recommend!
Hallowed by HairCrescendo / @sword-and-stars
Available on Ao3, Complete, Explicit, Smut, Fluff
Wordcount: 4,615
Smouldering smut and fluffy feelings. I'd recommend all of HairCrescendo's work tbh, they're a fantastic writer and they have about a dozen more Explicit works. ;)
three words that become hard to say (I and love and you) by overcomeeithlongingfora_girl / @overcomewithlongingfora-girl
Available on Ao3, Complete, Explicit, Smut, Praise Kink, Subdrop, Domdrop, Light BDSM
Wordcount: 2,977
This fic is hothotHOT, and yet also so sweet and emotional it makes my heart hurt. Bring a fan and some tissues.
Courtesan by lesbianophelia / @mendontprotectyou
Available on Ao3, Complete, Explicit, Post-Canon, Established Relationship, Light Praise Kink
Wordcount: 2,200
So scrumptious I just want to eat it. Prepare to feel things. 🔥
For Peace and Zuko by BeersForQueers / @omgbeersforqueers
Available on Ao3, Complete, Explicit, Slowburn, Alternate Universe - Arranged Marriage, Future Fic, Canon-Divergence
Wordcount: 43,277
Speaking of classics, honestly you could read anything and everything by BeersForQueers and I would recommend doing so! They're a longtime member of the fandom. They were there for this ship when it needed it most (I want you to know that I just blew a kiss to the sky). Having said that, For Peace and Zuko is one of my absolute favourites. The sequel Ice Cave makes for a lovely epilogue.
when the prison doors are opened by alternatedoom
Available on Ao3, Complete, Explicit, Underage, Sickfic, Angst, H/C, Voyeurism, Animal Killed for Food, FWB, Imprisonment, Dub-Con
Wordcount: 164,648
I don't know if this counts as slowburn given... ahem, the progression of things. On the emotional front, perhaps. Their relationship development is messy in a delicious way, really twists you around into such wonderful spirals... Idek if I'm making any sense, that's what this fic does to my mental capacity! Every character interaction is just so so good and the way the tension gets ratcheted up and then unwound is captivating. I could gush about this fic all day, but instead I'll just leave it at: it's really, really good and you should read it.
In the Soft Light by CSHfic and VSfic
Available on Ao3, Complete, Teen, Slowburn, Pining, Canon-Divergence, Alternate Universe - War Ended Early, Angst, H/C, Firelord Azulon, Miscommunication, Pining, Underage Drinking, AU - Moon Spirit Sokka, side Bakoda, Sickfic, Implied/Referenced Child Abuse, Bed-Sharing
Wordcount: 83,904
Some of my absolute favourite authors in this fandom and all of their work is fantastic quality. In terms of spot-on characterisation, wonderful descriptions, plenty of humour to balance out the angst... Their writing is masterful, and this is one of my favourites of their fics. They have more mature/explicit works as well. ;) (Side-note: I absolutely adore Zuko in this fic).
(do you take this jerk to be) your one and only by jatersade
Available on Ao3, Complete, Teen, Slowburn, Angst, Enemies to Friends to Lovers, Arranged Marriage, Bed-Sharing, Misunderstandings, Pining, AU - Royalty, Alternate Universe - 100 Year War Ended Early, Implied/Referenced Child Abuse
Wordcount: 55,846
I love the arranged marriage trope and I love it when authors play around with the gang's status as the children of royalty and world leaders, and this fic does all of that so well. Jatersade's pacing and the quality of their charecterisarion really elevates this fic.
---
I wanted to keep this list to complete fics, but I do have to mention feels like we only go backwards by oldpotatoe, because although it's a WIP it is iconic.
Also, a personal favourite of mine that has been discontinued (but didn't end on a cliffhanger or anything) is invisible string by wilteddaisy (taotu). I have it saved to my phone as a PDF for when I need a comfort read, that's how much I love it.

An unlikely ally
Pairing: Azula/Jet Rating: T Summary: After a betrayal that scattered everything Azula had built inside Ba Sing Se, she starts to make a new plan.
A short fic for Week 1: Forced to work together/Sickfic/There was only one bed of @atlararepairmonth!
Also, it looked like a particularly good day for some antimonarchist sentiment lol
Scrunching her nose, she didn’t contain the disdain with which she looked around the rickety room. It smelled like dust and misery, like most of the Lower Ring, and it looked much the same way. There was barely any furniture, save from a low table and a couple of small squared tatamis. The window was covered with a crude wooden blind, and she could smell mould on the walls underneath.
She wanted to complain; the petty corner of her mind, the one that was used to get the finest silk gold could buy for draperies that wouldn't even touch her skin, itched at the sharp words gathering in her throat. But she also knew that she had a mission, and that her personal comfort was not paramount to achieve it; therefore, it needed to be discarded.
The silhouette of the one remaining Dai Li guarding outside their lousy hideout provided less relief than she would have liked. He was moving. She observed, tense and ready. At least half of the Dai Li were now back on Long Feng's side…
“Princess, we got some food,” he whispered from the other side of the paper-thin wall.
She exhaled a silent sigh.
“You may bring it in,” she commanded, taking a brief look at the immobile, unconscious runaway next to her. He'd probably need to eat something as soon as he woke up. The problem was, she didn’t know if he’d be able to stomach any kind of solid food.
It had been a rushed decision, taken in a split second, to bring him along while fleeing the Earth Palace. She’d recognized him from the Dai Li reports, back when all of them responded to her. Before the incident in the catacombs; her authority had been undermined one inch too far and so many things had collapsed around her…
Her unexpected companion shifted, bringing her attention back to him. The boy with the hook swords was a trouble-maker, an agitator the Dai Li had finally caught after he’d made a too-bold confrontation with some ‘firebenders’ in the Lower Ring. He hadn’t been wrong; maybe he'd be glad to know that.
His movement prompted her back to action, and she reached for the bag the agent had just left in front of her. One look was enough; the food was somehow worse than the house. The round shape of the bread (she assumed it was supposed to be a steamed bun) made it hard to bite, and its hardness made it impossible. Nevertheless, she persevered and managed to take a chunk off, chewing methodically on the resulting sawdust.
There was a crude ceramic pot inside, and one cup. She decided she'd use it before he needed it, and served herself some of the content. A preliminary sniffing made her suspect it was supposed to be tea.
Rearranging herself on the tatami next to him, she cradled the cup of tea in her hands. She could feel her fingertips warming up, a sign of the chi-blocking wearing off. Those two traitors! It was Zuko's fault, not to align with the right side! Mai and Ty Lee should have let destiny run its course! No wonder she had lost the Dai Li's respect; who would be loyal to a princess whose two closer collaborators betrayed her?
As quickly as she could, she shot down the shock and indignation, the boundless anger, the…
The hurt.
She buried that word. Hurt meant weakness, and she was not weak. She couldn't afford to; weakness meant dishonor, and dishonor meant disapproval in a world where being in the Firelord's good graces was everything.
Damn them! Mai and Ty Lee turning against her inside Lake Laogai, out of some misplaced sense of 'love', had thrown all of Azula's plans out of their course. It made the Dai Li doubt her, gave Long Feng enough footing to reclaim part of his forces and had left Azula in a more compromised position than she had ever wanted to be, without her bending and relying only on half of a force that ought to remain united.
As her cup let out the first thread of steam, he groaned and blinked, finally waking up.
Predictably spooked, but also bound by the severity of his injuries (some of the younger Dai Li agents could be too harsh), he made an unsuccessful attempt to get away from her.
“Who are you? What is this place? Last thing I saw was the Avatar and that firebender…”
Oh, so he already knew.
“We are back in Ba Sing Se,” was all she said. The rest of the information needed to be dosed carefully. “The Avatar flew away with his friends and his bison.”
The spark of hurt betrayal in his eyes was deeply satisfactory to notice.
“You were wounded, and I thought you were worth helping,” she looked at him.
Indeed, this particular peasant had also managed to become an important figure within the Lower Ring underbelly. A coup orchestrated at the top hadn't worked; one coming from the bottom, from the very foundations…
“Who are you?”
“My name is not important,” she put down the cup of cold tea. “I just share your interests.”
“What do you know about me and my interests?” he bit back, like a cornered animal.
It worked for Azula.
“Oh, some things,” she smiled. “I know you want this city to be free of tyranny…” she shrugged in apparent indifference, and observed with satisfaction the darkening of his frown. “I know you, like many, are tired of monarchs and kings telling you what to do.”
She picked up the teacup again, satisfied at the now uniform heat on her fingertips.
“You're one of them,” he growled, pointing at her now steaming cup of tea. She didn't try to deny it. “Why do you care to help us?”
“You are right,” she answered, sipping from her cup. “I am a firebender. But bending is not always a show of allegiance, as you might have come to suspect from some of your Lower Ring acquaintances.”
Azula knew for sure that some of the former sympathizers of Jeong Jeong –the old fool– had taken refuge in Ba Sing Se, and frequented the same circles as this self-appointed freedom fighter.
He still didn't seem convinced.
“Suffice to say, I am very invested in seeing the people at the top of this city falling down,” she sipped the mediocre, diluted tea in her cup with complete calmness.
And only after that I may claim this city for my father.
However, he didn't need to know that.
“Do we have a deal?” she extended one hand.
He didn't take it.
“I don't trust you.” The obvious suspicion on his glare revealed the rush going on inside his mind. “But you could have killed me while I was out. I will cooperate with you this once. Then we’ll see.”
She smirked; despite his youth, Jet was a better player than Long Feng, she could already sense it in his words.
“Suit yourself,” she shrugged. “You will see that you can really use my help.”
He snorted.
“It seems to me that you need mine too.”
His words made her smirk widen. She liked this guy… and maybe her respect for him rose an inch.
It would be interesting working with him to make Ba Sing Se fall.

A list of my favorite whumpees (and characters i want to see more whump of!)
Zuko (from ATLA) - back when I was a kid and watched the show on TV I didn't even know what whump was but I always loved that final fight against Azula (you know, the one where he gets hurt)
Ace (from One Piece) - he’s always been my favorite OP character and I like the found family trope he has going on so I like fics and stuff where the other crew members are taking care of him (pls don’t mention his d-word to me, i WILL cry. Actually, he's alive and well!!)
Todoroki (from BNHA) - he's my favorite character in BNHA and tbh he’s very whumpable (also I really enjoy fics where Aizawa ends up looking after him like the dad he is)
Hak (from Akatsuki no Yona) - he canonically gets hurt A LOT and I'm enjoying it. Big, strong, tough guys getting hurt is just chef’s kiss! (I wish there were more fics about it but the manga itself is feeding me quite well so I can’t really complain)
Kaito Kid (from Case Closed/Detective Conan and Magic Kaito 1412) - he's always been my favorite character in the anime and even though I don't keep up with the anime itself, I've watched all the episodes and movies he shows up in lol He's just so whumpable and I love it when when he gets hurt and Shinichi ends up saving him, even though they're rivals.
Vanitas (Vanitas no Carte) - I don’t actively seek out whump content like fics for him but I did enjoy that one episode where he got hurt and ended up with a fever and all that.
Zack Fair (from FF VII) - the kind of whumpee who's loud and cheerful but gets uncharacteristically quiet when he's hurt and/or sick imo! There really isn't enough whump fics about him... Especially not about mentor Angeal and mentee Zack...
Cloud (from FF VII) - another big, tough guy! Very whumpable as well (though there is surprisingly little whumpy fics (and I'm not a fan of psychological whumpy stuff, I prefer it physical with the characters getting bloody and all that <3))!
Noctis (from FF XV) - I only played the game a few months ago (no, we will not talk about the ending. It’s not real) but I've read whump fics and sickfics about him a few years ago already lol Again, I love the found family kinda trope (is it found family if they've all already known each other and have been close for years? Anyways, I love the bond the group has). There is a lot more Noctis whump content than there is Cloud or Zack whump content.)
Suguru Geto (from Jujutsu Kaisen) - HOW COULD I FORGET HIM??? Well probably because there is nowhere near enough whump/sickfic content for him… I am in desperate need for moreeeee!! Maybe the anime onlys will feed me once the new season is out and they'll get to know him… I am hoping that will happen…
Leon (from Resident Evil) - there is NOT enough whump content for Leon! That being said, I enjoy fics where he works together with the BSAA and everything goes to shit and he gets hurt <3 (In my mind he's besties with Claire, Chris and Jill even though canonically he's never even interacted with Jill as far as I'm aware of but that doesn’t matter to me!)
Ghost (from CoD) - honestly I played most CoD games way back when I was in middle school but I never paid much attention to the story itself lmao But because I played the previous games all those years ago I got the new one that was recently released (just because nostalgia, you know?) and it started this new found love for whumpy Ghost. There is NOT enough content of that though (please, I am literally begging, give me more Ghost whump). Another big (like literally, the guy is huge <3), strong dude that I like to see bloody and hurt.
d'Artagnan (from The Musketeers, like the movie or the show or the book idk, just d'Artagnan) - I've known about the Three Musketeers since I was a little girl idk everyone knows them I guess?? ('All for one and one for all!' and all that. It's just famous) but I've only watched that one movie a few years ago (the one with Logan Lerman). Anyways, I enjoy whump fics about him. Simply because he's the 'baby' of the group and the others are like mentors to him and more experienced and even though he's talented and he can hold his ground, I love it when he gets hurt and the others take care of him.
Legolas (from The Lord of the Rings) - I've always loved him. He's always been my favorite but for some strange reason I never thought about whumpee Legolas until like a year ago??? I absolutely love the bromance between him and Aragorn and Gimli and the idea of him talking in elvish with Aragorn when he's hurt and/or feverish is just so dear to me!

Summary: a sick y/n is caught up in a love triangle... which boy is better?
Word count: 1.4k :)
Tumblr media
The doorbell rang, and Y/N rushed to answer it. She opened the door to reveal a smiling Sokka. He was your best friend, so he normally showed up unannounced once in a while.
"Hey, Y/N!" he said.
"Hi, Sokka! What brings you here?"
"Knowing you, you probably haven't had dinner yet?" She nodded with a laugh. "Wanna get something to eat?"
It was past dinnertime, and she still wasn't hungry... In fact, the thought of food made her nauseous. Y/N nodded anyways, and Sokka smiled, getting his car keys out of his pocket.
Driving past the streets, the two blasted music out of the car's speakers, and Sokka sang along to all of the pop songs on the radio. Y/N laughed at the silly expression Sokka had on his face, even though the music was way too loud; it was honestly giving her a headache, but it was okay. She looked out the window to see Zuko, another close friend, heading out of the Jasmine Dragon. He must've just finished work...
"Oh, it's Zuko!" she chirped, giving him a wave. Sokka said nothing, his singing quieting down to silence, but he pulled over anyways to say hi. He parked his car, and the two hopped out.
“Y/N!” Zuko ran over with a huge grin on his face, waving his hand as a greeting. “Nice to see you again! Oh... hi Sokka.” Zuko’s cheerful smile slowly morphed into one of distaste when he noticed that she had been with Sokka.
“Hey, Zuko,” Sokka acknowledged. Y/N turned to see that Sokka’s face also fell when his eyes met Zuko’s. Sokka slung an unnecessary protective arm over her shoulders, and Y/N cleared her throat to clear up the growing tension. Shaking Sokka’s arm off, she opened her mouth to speak.
"Is it cold out here or is it just me?" Y/N blurted, causing Zuko and Sokka to look at each other worriedly. Sokka pulled off his jacket to throw it onto her. He zipped it up, and met her eyes.
"It's not cold at all... you feeling okay?" Y/N nodded slowly, signaling that she was okay, so Zuko and Sokka dropped the subject. She could have sworn it was chilly out.
"Anyways," Sokka continued, heading into his car, "wanna go grab dinner together or something?” The other two nodded, also following Sokka into the car. Y/N hopped into the passenger seat, and Zuko was stuck in the back seats. She could tell he wasn’t happy with her sitting next to Sokka, but she ignored it. They were just being plain childish, and it was giving her a headache.
“Oh, Y/N,” Sokka started. “I went to-”
"Sokka, go left," Zuko interuppted. Sokka sighed and turned the wheel, following through with Zuko’s command.
As the car turned, it pushed Y/N to the side of the car, forcing her to lean on the car door. Deciding not to get up, she nuzzled closer to the car window, her warm breath fogging it up. She blinked, trying to stop the growing sleepiness clouding her head.
Y/N heard Sokka ramble on about his day in the background, and her eyes closed for a second... just a second. She was just so... exhausted...
Tumblr media
"Hey... Y/N? Are you asleep?" Sokka's voice asked softly. He poked her side, making her slightly stir awake. She tried to lift her heavy eyelids. Wow, she felt so sluggish.
"What, is Sokka boring?" Zuko laughed, as Sokka gasped, offended. "I should have been the one driving next to her."
"Y/NNN- how could you fall asleep in the middle of my story?" Sokka shook Y/N awake with his free arm. "Come on, you can't leave me with Zuko."
"Hmm?" Y/N hummed quietly, letting them know she was awake. Her voice was raspy; she had a sore throat, but the boys seemed to wave it off as a symptom of sleepiness.
"Am I too boring for you?" Sokka asked.
"No, of course no-"
"So you're saying you'd be with Sokka rather than me?" Zuko accused.
"N-no-"
"So you'd rather be with Zuko?"
"What? You guys are arguing for no reason," she mumbled, but the two boys ignored her.
"Of course she'd rather be with me; she's just too nice to say that to your face," Sokka argued, his voice increasing in volume.
"No, then why would she fall asleep while you were talking? You're boring." Zuko's voice was also loud.
"Please stop," Y/N whispered, rubbing her temples, and this gesture didn’t go unnoticed. Sokka and Zuko froze at once, watching her with concern.
"You have a headache? Are you sick?" Sokka asked immediately. Y/N sighed and nodded.
"Is... that why you fell asleep- because you were sick?" Zuko added, and Y/N nodded again weakly, and sighed. Sokka reached out next to him and put his hand on her forehead.
"Y/N, you're burning up..." Sokka gasped.
"Let me see," Zuko mumbled, placing his hand on her forehead. He sighed. "Y/N, you feel really warm."
"I'm so sorry for waking you up- it would have been better for you to stay asleep," Sokka apologized.
"No, no. It's my fault." She shivered, pulling Sokka's jacket tighter. “If I knew I was sick, I shouldn’t have come with you guys.”
"Here, have my jacket, too." Zuko wrapped his jacket over her as well, draping it over her shoulders.
"She doesn't need more than one, Zuko," Sokka scoffed quietly. "Anyways, we can go home if you'd like?"
"Oh, no, don't worry about me! We can go get dinner or something, it's just a headache. It'll go away," she reassured them.
"I don't know..." Zuko said. "Maybe we can get something to eat at your house?" Sokka turned around, heading back towards Y/N's home.
"I agree, you need rest." Sokka looked at her in the mirror. "Sorry to break it to ya, but you don't look so good."
"Okay... if that's alright..." she said, and Sokka smiled.
Everyone arrived at Y/N's house, and Zuko helped you out.
"Shall we?" he asked, gently grabbing your hand.
"C'mon, Y/N," Sokka said, glaring at Zuko. He grabbed your other hand, and pulled you along.
"Y/N," Zuko muttered.
"Zuko, let go of her," Sokka said, warningly.
"Who do you think I am? I don't have to listen to you," Zuko snapped back.
"You guys are driving me insane, can't you both just shut up and get along?" Her voice now matched theirs in volume, and the two stopped arguing, looking apologetic.
Boy, were you lightheaded all of a sudden. She staggered on her feet, and she buried her face in her hands. Not now...
"What's wrong?" Sokka's voice immediately asked.
"Are... are we scaring you? We promise it's not going to get too serious..." Zuko sounded concerned. She could feel both of the boys' arms hovering around her body, trying to protect her, catch her if she fell, or give her reassurance.
"No, no..." she breathed. "I'm.. fine..." With that, she promptly passed out.
Tumblr media
Both boys rushed to be the one who caught Y/N. Zuko scooped her up into his arms, and he carried her into her room, leaving Sokka alone.
Zuko gently laid her down onto her bed, pulling the blanket over her. With a swift kiss that he was tempted to do all evening, he got up and headed out the door.
"Well..." he said, glancing at Sokka. The atmosphere was now awkward, and neither boy was going to leave for a while...
Tumblr media
Y/N woke up, and judging from her headache and how warm she felt, she wasn't any better. Groaning, she got out of bed, expecting to be alone, but she was wrong.
She opened her eyes to see two boys asleep on the couch. They had stayed...
Medicine was laid out for her on the counter, and she gladly took it.
"Y/N?" Zuko's voice croaked, making her jump.
"Oh, hey... I wasn't expecting you two to stay..." she said, and he rolled his eyes.
"Of course we stayed... you feeling better?" Concern was written all over his face.
"I still feel like trash..." she answered truthfully.
"Maybe I can kiss it better," Sokka said with a small, playful smile, now awake as well, and she laughed.
"Anyways, thank you both..." She gave a quick kiss on both of their foreheads, making both of them blush. "Now, get some rest at home... I'll be fine."
"No way, I'm staying," both said at the same time. Y/N sighed; there was no way of getting rid of them, and she loved them for that.
"Do you need anything?" Sokka asked, getting up to get her some water.
"Nah, I'm alright... we can watch a movie, though?" She flopped onto the couch, in between the two boys. She turned on the classic Meet the Robinsons and laid back.
Both boys rested their heads on her shoulders, and she laughed.
"You two are idiots, you're going to get sick." They shrugged, and she smiled.

“Hey,” Zuko whispers, guiding Sokka’s gaze up. “Can I kiss you?” he asks with a quiet sort of wonder, as if Sokka granting his request will repair every wrong in the world.
Sokka shakes his head, inciting another wave of nausea. “I’m sick,” he croaks in protest, but Zuko’s expression doesn’t change.
“I know,” he says immediately. Then, hardly above a whisper, “Can I kiss you anyway?”
Or, Sokka’s sick, and Zuko just wants to help.

In Sickness and Health
Summary: Zuko knows that Katara is sick but we all know Katara, she is extremely stubborn. Will she finally realize that she is indeed sick and will let Zuko help her feel better?
AN: As always, I do not own anything Avatar related, just the plot of the one-shot. BTW, Katara is stubborn as always lol, Happy reading!!
Zuko wants to do something. He wants to step in, but knew that if he did, he would get an earful about it.
He narrowed his gaze as he watched Katara walking around the teashop, covering her mouth with her elbow after a cough as she wipes down the table after the customers had left after drinking their warm tea. He shook his head, muttering to himself that he wishes that she would just go home already and that he could handle the shop on his own. He has done it before when his uncle would ask him to close the Jasmine Dragon.
He placed the broom that he was using up against the nearby wall, sighing as he walked over to the blue-eyed grad student and grabbed the cleaning supplies from her hands. “Go home Katara,” he ordered.
Katara glared up at him, reaching over to grab the cleaning supplies for the wooden tables from his hands. “I am fine. It’s just allergies. It is nearing springtime after all,” she said, rolling her eyes as she moved to a different table to wipe down.
Zuko narrowed his golden eyes at her as he watches silently cleaning off the tables. He crossed his arms above his chest, shaking his head at the stubbornness of his long-time friend.
He decided to let it go for now and took care of customers that was coming in, asking them what kind of tea they would like to have.
When Zuko first met Katara, he thought that they wouldn’t get along because of her stubbornness mostly and her know-it-all attitude that she would display at times during their conversations together. However, the longer that they’ve been working together, the more he feels like he could read her at times. This time though, he can barely read her at all and he thinks that maybe it was because she was sick was the reason why.
Throughout the evening, Zuko made sure to keep a watchful eye on Katara, making sure that she didn’t fall over against the tables as she was taking customers tea orders. He knew that she was pushing herself because she didn’t want to go home even though she was clearly sick as a turtleduck.
Again, she is stubborn.
He’s not sure why he cares so much about her health though. They were just co-workers and friends working at his uncle’s teashop part-time while studying at Ba Sing Se University full time. He feels like he would do the same thing if it were her brother Sokka and their friends Aang, Toph and Suki.
He looked up from his tiny notepad that he was writing his customers orders on to take a watchful look on Katara who was sitting down at one of the tables, blowing her nose with a tissue. He frowned and tapped the notepad with his pen, walking away from the table to walk over towards her. “Katara.”
Katara scoffed at Zuko, rolling her azure eyes at him. “What are you, my dad?” she asked, shaking her head as she got up to throw away her used tissue into a trash bin, turning around and placed her hands onto her hips. “I said I am fine, Zuko. Just leave me alone already,” she told him hotly, huffing as she grabbed a tray full of tea and brought over to a table that was full of elderly women.
Zuko threw up his hands in frustration, shaking his head as he looked over at the clock that was hanging above the counter. There’s only a couple of more hours left before closing, hopefully by then, Katara would feel better. If not, he will make her go home for the night and he didn’t care if she would fight him.
He wished that the time would move faster though. He doesn’t understand as to why time moves so slow when it was near closing time.
Zuko sucked in a breath when he glanced over to see Katara washing the teacups with a cloth, and he could hear her sniffles from across the shop. He sighed heavily through his nose as he went over to lock the door of the shop. He made his way over to a table and started to place the chairs on top of the of the tables and he could hear Katara walking over to attempt to help him, but he held up a hand to stop her. “I got the rest of this. Go home,” he ordered, not caring if she was sending him a death glare.
“I told you over and over Zuko, it’s just allergies,” Katara said in protest, wiping her nose with the back of her hand.
Zuko ignored her and just simply looked at her, knowing full well just by one look that it wasn’t just allergies as Katara claimed it was. He rolled his golden eyes and reached out with a hand towards her, scoffing when Katara tried to back away from him. “I’m checking something,” he explained, using a hand to lightly touch her forehead, frowning at how burning hot it was. “You’re burning up.”
Katara reached up to her forehead as if she didn’t believe him and widen her blue eyes after she had touched it. “It… wasn’t burning all day.” She told him quietly, turning her head slightly when she felt a cough come up from her throat. “Great, now I’m coughing.”
Zuko didn’t say ‘I told you so’ even though he secretly wanted to, but instead he just simply walked over around the counter and grabbed a couple of ingredients for a certain type of tea.
Katara walked over to stand next to him, watching him as he put the ingredients together and lifted a brow. “Is that what I think it is?”
Zuko gave her a side-eye glance, waiting for her to continue her guessing games, knowing that him and Uncle Iroh have been teaching her about different types of teas since the first day she had. “Don’t know. What do you think it could be, Katara?”
He watches her looking at the tea bag that he was tying the knot and waiting for the kettle to get done. “Any guesses?” he prompted with a small smirk on his face.
“Is it Chamomile?” she asked him, cocking her head on the side.
“Are you asking me or telling me?” Zuko asked her, keeping an eye on the kettle that was on the stove.
“I’ll know it when I taste it.”
Zuko sighed and didn’t say anything more when the loud shriek of the kettle sounded, and he had walked over to turn off the stove. “There’s a spare bedroom upstairs, go lay down and I’ll bring up the tea.” He instructed. He half inspected Katara to protest again, but surprisingly, she didn’t and he could hear her walking up the small set of stairs that would lead her to a spare bedroom.
After mixing the water and the tea bag together, Zuko made his way upstairs to the spare bedroom and he could see Katara laying down facing away from him. The two didn’t say anything when he placed the tea down on a nightstand.
“Feeling any different?” Zuko asked her, breaking the stillness that was between them as he sat down at the tip of the bed, watching her turn around to face him. She shook her head at him and Zuko reached out with a hand to touch her forehead like he had done earlier. “It’s still warm,” he noted with a frown, reaching over to grab the tea. “Here.”
He watches Katara scrunched up her nose at the smell, but she slowly drank some of the tea. “Any guesses yet?”
“It almost tasted like apple, and it also have a honey-like sweetness to it,” Katara said, taking another timid sip of the tea to see if she could figure out what kind of tea she was drinking. “It also has an herbal smell to it.” She observed, taking another sip and licked her lips. “I was right! It was Chamomile!”
Zuko’s lip quirked upwards at the correct answer. “You’re getting better at naming teas.” He told her and Katara scoffed at him. “Just sleep here for tonight, I’ll make sure to call Sokka that you’ll be sleeping here tonight. Get well.” He made his way over to the door to leave the room to leave Katara alone.
“I feel like we are husband and wife, taking care of one another when one is sick.” She said with a laugh. “What is it that they say during a wedding ceremony? I can’t remember.”
Zuko scoff at her with a shake of his head but decided to answer her anyways. “I believe it’s in sickness and in health or something along those lines?”
“Something like that,” Katara agrees, placing the empty cup of tea back onto the nightstand that was next to her and snuggled back into the bed comfortably. “Even though we are not married, thank you for taking care of me. Even though I was a bit stubborn in the beginning.”
Zuko rolled his golden eyes at her and nodded his head. “Just get better soon, Katara.”
“I’ll do my best, Zuko. Thank you.”
“Anytime.”

Caregiving Sokka is best Sokka.
He makes penne pasta and puts a few spoonfuls on Zuko’s plate, undressed and appealingly bland. Zuko eats a couple pieces with his fingers.
“How are you feeling, love?”
Zuko smiles at the word.
“Love,” he says. “That’s so sweet.”
“You are,” Sokka says. “You’re my love.”
“You’re my love,” Zuko says, eating another piece of penne. “Anyway, I feel like shit.”
