About Damon Salvatore
My understanding of Damon
So, for what we know, in his human life Damon was almost the sole caretaker of Stefan. Once his mother died (faked her death) he became his only parental figure, Damon was 16/17 at the time. However, he has assumed that role since he was much younger. In the flashbacks of season 7 we see Damon, that couldn't be older than fourteen, taking punishment for Stefan. The money was taken by their mother, Lily, but Damon thought Stefan had done it accidentally so he confessed to a crime neither commited. The punishment was his father putting out his cigarette on Damon's arm.
Damon also left the war not only because he hated it and didn't agree with it, but because Stefan sent him a letter that worried him. When he returned home he returned to Katherine. He fell in love with her, for a second he thought she had chosen him, but them came to accept that she also wanted Stefan. This is very sad, because for what we know his own parents always preferred Stefan and he always put his little brother first.
Starting his life as a vampire, his emotions heightened. Damon spent his human life taking care of his brother and with Katherine dead he didn't really want to keep living. Stefan forced him to turn (I don't blame him) and Damon was rightly pissed off about it. But even after that he stayed with him and once he left he first made sure that Lexi took care of him.
Flashforward to the 40s when Stefan and Damon met for the first time after 1912. They reconcile, but it's short lived, because for whatever reason Lexi hates Damon enough to not even tell Stefan why he didn't appear in the train station when he explicitly told her to tell him why. In the 40s Damon was also doing what he thought best for Stefan, even if what he thought best came mostly from Lexi's guilt-tripping.
And then the 50s happen. So far Damon has been a pretty standard vampire with plenty of humanity and control, he even goes to visit his human family when one of them calls him and says he needs help. Then he gets kidnapped by some crazy doctors and for the following five years he is tortured daily and the only reason he gets by is because he made a friend. A friend with whom he hatches a plan to escape, but who he can't save when the time comes. So, when he knows he can't save Enzo, he flippes the switch. If he hadn't, he wouldn't have left Enzo and could've died or be recaptured.
During the first year of his captivity Damon believed that Stefan was going to rescue him. Stefan never came.
In 1994 is when he starts getting his humanity back, but he kills Zach's wife and probably switches his flipp again.
How long has Damon being without his humanity? decades. We saw how Elena and Caroline where when they got back their humanity, and they didn't even had it off for a full year.
Damon's humanity wasn't fully on again until late season 1 and once it was he was a fucking mess. Drunk and depressed, which I don't think it was only because of Katherine.
In season two he still adjusting, and to that we have to add Katherine's return to fuck shit up and falling in love with Elena. Both things he doesn't know how to process. Which is why he was so hyper volatile in season 2.
In season three he is doing much better even with the worry of Stefan having left with Klaus.
In season three to season 4 we see a big development in Damon. He is getting better, having a better relationship with his brother and with the people around him.
Season 5 is complicated. Because Damon returns to the place where he was captive and tortured for five years. And this is Damon, he doesn't talk about his emotions, he doesn't even acknowledges when he is sad. In S5 Damon was suffering a lot from PTSD. I imagine that going back to a cell and meet with one of the survivors of a family that tortured you (especially after knowing that Aaron was close to Maxwell) wasn't easy. And yes, he did kill Aaron because he thought Elena broke up with him, but I highly doubt that was all.
And he didn't tell Stefan of what happened to him with Augustine, because he didn't want him to feel more guilty.
In season 6 and season 7 we once again see growth in Damon.
And in season eight he is being mind controlled like half of the season. It's a good thing that he turned human again, because processing all that happened in season 8 with the vampires emotions would send him in a spiral again.
All in all, Damon Salvatore is an incredibly mentally unstable man who does his best.

Familiar Faces - Calm before the storm Part 2
Summary: Elijah Gilbert has been haunted by dreams of other lives as long as he remembers, but now with the appearance of the Salvatore brother he may finally get some answers.
-----
Stefan loved his brother, even if he knew he couldn't leave him free, but he was also tired of him.
“Do they still wear ties at this thing?” Damon asked as he admired himself in the mirror.
“Why are you even going?” He asked.
“It's only fitting. We were at the very first one, remember?” Damon told him.
Stefan did, going with Katherine, catching the sight of his brothers in the corner of eye, Damon being pulled by an over excited Elijah, watching as Eli tired over the night until they both left, Damon carrying Eli.
“I think it's better if we don't draw attention to ourselves.” he tried.
“So you should stay here.” Damon offered, “I'll see to it Elena has a good time.“ Stefan took a drink before he could say anything to entertain Damon anymore, his brother was apparently wait as he spoke again, “Besides I can't leave Elijah without a date now.”
He swallowed the wrong way, choking on the drink.
“What!?” he managed to choke out,
“Oh yeah, Caroline’s mom wouldn’t approve of me, can’t imagine why” Damon shrugged, “so she asked Elijah to take me.”
“You can’t!” he couldn’t stop the word escaping him as he knew they’d do nothing, but please Damon at his helplessness.
“Why not? it’s fitting, I took him to the first and hundred years later he’s taking me.”
They were cut off by the sound of a phone, Damon pulled a mobile free, letting out a laugh as he read the text.
“Seems he’s meeting me here.”
Stefan stared at his brother’ smug face and wanted to scream
------
He should have asked more questions, he thought as he stood at the front door of the Salvatore's house, dressed in his suit suddenly hyper aware that he hadn’t ever met Damon while he had been trying to deny it, his mind was almost sure Damon was Dam.
He thought meeting him here would give him time to get to know him, so Elijah could separate them in his head so he wouldn’t mess up at the party.
So there he was at the of the Salvatore House, waiting for the door to open to reveal either Zach, Stefan or Damon.
His cousin, or his brothers.
The door opened to show an older man.
“Zach.” he smiled, ignoring the flinch Zach couldn’t quite hide as he looked at him and noticed the white bandages wrapped around his hand to where they vanished under his cuff.
Ah, he would be the one other person to remember that, wasn’t helped by the fact he was only just older than he was as EJ.
He doesn't wonder how much he looks like his body did on the-
“Elijah what are you doing here?” Zach asked, Elijah frowned at the slight panic he could hear in his voice.
“Damon.” he answered, “He’s coming with me to the Founder’s Party.”
“You’re What?” Zach’s voice rose as did the panic.
“That’s not a problem, i thought you-”
“No not that, it’s just Damon he’s-” Zach tried only to be interrupted.
“He’s what? Uncle Zach.” a voice drawled, Zach froze.
‘Not an uncle,’ he thought as he had when Elena had told him Stefan was staying with his uncle ‘Zach’ Elijah knew the family, he was very aware of that, as if they had had more relatives he wouldn’t have felt as guilty about leaving Zach alone.
Instead of letting himself think too much of that guilt, Elijah leaned slightly forward to see the source of the voice.
He looked the same, suit more modern, but as Damon looked from Zach to him there was a soft fond look in his eyes.
Damon knew him despite the fact they hadn’t met before.
Part of Elijah is nine and wants to throw himself in his older brother’s arms, explain everything because Damon would be able to fix it.
He smothered that feeling, he was seventeen and didn’t know him, throwing yourself at your friend’s boyfriend was also just not done, he reminded himself as he took a breath and smiled at Damon.
“Hello, i thought we could get to know get other on the way,”
“Caroline, already told me.” Damon smiled widely as he stepped around Zach, slipping an arm over his shoulder to start to turn him away.
Elijah let him.
“E-” Zach started,
“It’s alright, Z.” he waved as he allowed himself to be led away, he wondered if he was the only person to notice Zach’s wide eyes. Elijah didn’t let himself wince, he had been so careful before.
He may have written Zach in his letters but Z was what he called his cousin during their phone calls.
Damon was staring at him with interest and glancing back every so often, so one person likely noticed but Damon had similar issues, seeing as Elijah rarely let anyone this close.
“We’re taking my car.” Damon told him as when he noticed Elijah staring back. “Sorry but mine’s better.” he added before Elijah  could say anything.
“I wasn’t going to get anything fancy for my first car, was I?” he shot back, Damon laughed.
—--
Zach swallowed around the lump in his throat as he watched the pair get into Damon’s car.
Damon had to be dealt with, he wasn’t going to let history repeat.
EJ’s body looked too small on the table, white sheet covering him.
“I swear Z, I'm never going to be free of white.” he had been told during one phone call.
Zach had made sure EJ was buried in a black suit with a deep blue shirt, no white there, it was the least he could have done.
Elijah Gilbert’s suit was a deep blue with a lighter blue shirt, no white either.
“Zach?” Uncle Stefan’s voice called him back to the present.
“Don’t pull Elijah Gilbert into this.”
“I won’t.” Stefan tells him, “after tonight he shouldn’t have to worry about Damon.”
-----
Damon was fighting against his want to stare, Elijah was nearly exactly the same, older, free for the fragility his health had left him with but other than that the same. A haunted maturity and charm, clearly comfortable in his formal suit more than others his age would.
However the more he learned the more he was sure Elijah remembered far more than he was pretending too, the fact Elijah hadn’t once pulled himself free when Damon rested his arm on him was only part of it.
He was also growing to see that the memories were affecting him more than he wanted to let anyone show.
They met Caroline outside the Lockwood’s house, Damon watches as Caroline tells Elijah that she had left Bonnie inside to meet them here.
Elijah hadn’t had friends in their life, either too ill or their father refusing to allow it, taking Eli’s sickness as a slight to his pride no doubt.
He was right, clearly he couldn’t kill Caroline as he watched Elijah smile at her fondly, he crushed the feeling of relief at the excuse, he didn’t care.
He allowed her to claim his arm, almost disappointed he could place Elijah under the other, it was brilliant to be able to feel him living, breathing in reach, however instead of going too far, Elijah stepped up beside them.
“I thought you brought Bonnie.” the hostess said as she noticed their joined arms
“Oh I did.” Caroline replied, “Damon is Elijah’s plus one.”
Her smile faded as she looked between them, Damon waited for the outburst, he had forgotten the troubles of a small town.
“Hello Mrs Lockwood,” Damon watched as Elijah brought her hand up to kiss it, a greeting as old fashioned that it should be conically yet Elijah pulled it off as the Mayor’s wife blushed ”pleasure as always.”
“Oh you,” she laughed lightly, before finally granting what he had needed, “Come on in.”
He smiled as he stepped over the threshold.
They lost Caroline shortly afterwards, as she left them to go to the woman in uniform
“That her mother?” he asked Elijah.
“Hence, I'm the alibi,” Elijah told him with a slight shrug, “She took us in for some time after our parents died.”
“So she wants you and Caroline together?” he mused looking for information, so far he had gotten nothing on his relationships, Caroline hadn’t known much and he had wondered if it was due to him having feelings for her.
“No,” the boy chuckled at the thought “I'm just the responsible one.”
“Oh?” he hummed “So Caroline is hoping seeing me with you will get her mom to trust me more.”
“Probably, so don’t do too much to stain my reputation.” Elijah warmed him with a crooked smile.
“I’ll try not too,” he said before adding “too much.” delighting in the small surprised laugh he got out of him.
Caroline reappears shortly after to claim him leading Elijah to step away from them.
Damon watched Elijah from a distance as he flickered between people, using his better hearing to caught them asking about his parents.
He could hear his heart speed up in likely anger yet Elijah kept an empty flat smile on his face that Damon remembered always being directed at their father, or hovering over his Aunt who looked as happy as Elijah felt to be there facing the same questions about her sister.
It wasn’t all that different from the first party when little Elijah barley up to his chest but had charmed the adults until his health started to fail and Damon had taken him home to wait for Stefan and Katherine.
It was the life he had wanted for him, and if it wasn’t for the fact he knows from nights outside the Gilbert house that Elijah was still haunted by the dreams he didn’t understand, he might leave him.
But he can’t, not when there was still a risk that this life could be cut short by an episode like the life before his brother had.
-----
It was in the quiet in the aftermath of Salvatore's history, that she asked the thing that she had wondered since seeing Elijah’s name following Damon’s ancestor.
“What about Elijah? You were all named after your ancestors?”
Damon turned his eyes back to the paper.
“It seemed history repeats itself, he died not long after the party, poor health claimed him.” he told her.
She suddenly realised why it had struck her.
Elijah Salvatore, the same name she remembers Elijah writing, when they were much younger normally followed by EJ, and Eli.

You sighed, sitting up on the bed as you rubbed your face, looking at the time. It had been nearly two weeks since you got back. School had already begun, it was nearly the 7th day and you had yet to step foot in the school. Zach insisted on keeping you home for a little. Tomorrow was going to be your first day. You could hear footsteps outside your door as you immediately tensed up, reaching for your knife laying next to you.
You scrunched your eyes, sitting up as you looked around, seeing yourself still in Jay’s house. It felt like a never-ending nightmare. You could hear footsteps outside the room, while you frowned slightly.
“Damn it,” Jay walked into the room, slamming the door shut behind him.
You jumped slightly, as he walked over to you.
“Did you let someone escape last night?” he asked softly.
You felt your heart rate increase slightly, shaking your head no.
“What did I tell you about lying to me?” he put his hand on your cheek, as you let out a shaky breath.
“I’m not lying to you,” you replied.
His eyes flashed grey while you felt pressure on the back of your head, feeling like someone was repeatedly hitting you. You closed your eyes, clenching your jaw.
Your vision was blurry as you opened them, seeing Jay standing next to you with a knife in his hand.
“What are you…”
“You would’ve gotten off easier if you told me the truth,” you felt the pain from your headache go away, looking up at Jay with tears in your eyes.
“I’m sorry,” you whispered.
“It’s too late. We can either do this the easy way or the hard way. Your pick.”
The door opened, while you held onto your knife tightly, seeing Zach open the door.
“Oh, I thought you were gonna be asleep by now,” you slowly put the knife down, shaking your head.
“Can’t sleep?” he asked.
You shrugged as he walked to you, sitting on your bed.
“You know when you’re ready to talk, I’m here,” you nodded softly, while he pressed a small kiss to your forehead.
“You don’t have to start school tomorrow, you know,” he started.
“It’s okay. I want to.” your voice was low as he sighed, before nodding.
“Well, try to sleep,” you nodded once more, as he stroked your cheek, before leaving your room.
As he walked out, you reached for your knife once more, wrapping your arm around your body as you stayed up, looking at the door.
Every time you slept, you’d only wake up an hour or so later from nightmares. You kept to yourself mainly, you could tell Derek wanted to be there for you, but he respected your space, as well as everyone else did. Zach would check in on you three or four times a night, he kept his eye on you. He still wasn’t comfortable with the thought of you going to school but you somehow managed to convince him.
You felt tears come to your eyes before you quickly wiped them away.
---
“Where are you going?” Derek asked while you walked down the stairs.
“Morning walk. I need to get back on schedule,” you replied.
You saw him look at Zach, who tensed slightly.
“Can I come with you?” he asked.
“Why?”
“Just because.”
“I don’t think you can keep up with me.”
“I’m the one with the werewolf speed.”
You looked at Zach once again before sighing, nodding your head.
“Let’s go,” he followed you out of the house.
---
You walked into the school, tensing immediately as Emily wrapped her arms around you tightly.
“I missed you,” she said softly.
You stayed tense, before breathing in, giving her a small smile.
“Come on,” you walked with her, as she held onto your arm tightly, Derek following close behind.
“How was your summer? You must’ve been busy, you couldn’t reply to a text,” she started.
“Yeah, it was busy,” you muttered, looking around.
Your mind drifted from the conversation, hearing your heartbeat in your ears as the noises around you drifted.
You put your hand in your pocket, keeping your hand on your pocket knife.
“Shit! I have to go, I’ll be late for class. I’ll see you at break,” you didn't notice as Emily ran off, before Derek put his hand on your shoulder, while you tightened your grip on your knife, before letting out a deep breath.
“Are you okay?” he asked softly.
“Why wouldn't I be?” you took your hand out of your pocket, before shrugging.
He gave you a look before shaking your head.
“We’re gonna be late for first period,” you raised an eyebrow.
“I have AP Bio first period,” you replied.
“Yeah, me too,” he replied.
“You don’t know the first thing about Biology,” you crossed your arms.
“Sure I do. I need to start getting more serious about school. We have two years left,” he shrugged.
“Derek-” you started before he cut you off.
“Come on,” he put his arm around your shoulder as you sighed, before walking to class.
---
“(Y/N),” you rolled your eyes as the two of you walked into the house.
“Hey, what’s going on?” Zach walked to the two of you.
You put your bag down, before running your fingers through your hair.
“I don’t need you to babysit me,” you shook your head.
“I’m not-”
“We have three of the same classes. You walk to me and from every class, you are constantly by my side. You don’t need to do that.”
Derek sighed, nodding his head.
“I’m just trying to look out for you,” he argued.
“And I’m telling you not to. I can look out for myself, Derek.”
“Hey, what happened?” Zach frowned, putting his hand on your shoulder while you shrugged it off.
“I'll be in the basement,” you walked away from the two of them, while Derek ran his fingers through his hair.
“I just wanted to look out for her,” he muttered softly.
“I know. (Y/N) doesn’t like to reach out for help, she thinks it makes her look needy,” Derek’s face fell into a frown.
“That isn’t true-”
“This past year fucked with her bad,” Zach said softly.
Derek felt his chest ache slightly, the thought of you upset always made him feel bad.
“I’m gonna go do my school work,” Zach nodded, before Derek grabbed your bag and his, walking upstairs.
---
“I’m not going. I already told you,” you walked up the stairs, hearing Zach talking to someone on the phone.
“There are many other hunters in the area. I can’t go,” he argued.
You sighed, walking up to him.
He put the phone down, turning to face you.
“Someone needs your help,” you started.
“They’ll manage on their own,” he shrugged.
“Zach, you don’t need to stay here for me,” you crossed your arms.
“Who said it was for you?”
“Zach,” you raised an eyebrow, as he sighed.
“I told you I’m not comfortable with you being out of the house for long, or away from my sight.”
“Derek already follows me around like a lost dog as it is. Someone needs your help and I’m not gonna keep you here.”
“(Y/N),” he put his hand on your cheek, before stroking it.
“I promised your mother I wouldn't let anything bad happen to you,” he started.
“What happened is on me and me alone. I could’ve fought back harder, I could’ve told you he was back, to begin with. But it doesn't matter anymore. I’m fine, he’s dead,” you could feel yourself lying but you knew you'd feel more guilt if Zach didn't go and help.
There was a moment of silence before he sighed, standing in front of you.
“If I go you have to promise me that you will tell me what is going on at all times. I will call you hourly and you must pick up,” he said.
“I promise,” you said.
He pressed a small kiss to your forehead, before sighing.
“Be careful, kid,” you wrapped your arms around him.
“You too,” you gave him a small smile before he walked to his office, grabbing his duffel bag.
“I’ll see you in a bit,” he said softly.
“I’ll see you,” you watched as he walked out of the house before you locked the door behind him.
---
Another sleepless night, you shot out of your bed, breathing heavily.
You’re home, you’re safe
“God,” you whispered to yourself, walking out of the bed.
You just needed to get some air.
You opened the door, met with Derek’s face as you tensed.
“Fuck! What the hell are you doing?” you hissed.
“I… I had a nightmare,” he started.
“What does that have to do with me?” you asked.
“Well, I was having a hard time sleeping, and I was wondering if I could sleep in your room,” he said.
You gave him a look before realizing what he was doing.
“Derek-” you started.
“I’m really tired. I just want to sleep,” he lied.
You nodded your head, before he walked to your bed, laying down.
You laid down next to him, before turning to face him.
“What is this for, really?” you raised an eyebrow.
“I could sense your nightmare from my room,” he whispered.
You sighed, turning your back to him.
He wrapped his arms around your waist, pulling you in slightly as you felt his warmth on your back.
“I’m sorry that Jay did this to you. I want you to know that I’m still going to be here and I’m still gonna bother you, even if you don’t want it,” you laughed softly, feeling a tear fall from your face as you sniffled.
“Fuck,” you scoffed, feeling more tears filling up in your eyes as you wiped them away.
Derek hugged you tightly, resting his head on top of yours.
You turned to face him, looking up.
“Don’t expect me to talk to you,” your voice wavered slightly.
“Don’t expect me to listen,” there was a small smirk on his face as you scoffed, wrapping your arms around him as you rested your head on his chest.
“Thank you, Derek,” you muttered softly.
He pressed a small kiss to your forehead, before stroking your back. He waited for you to fall asleep, before looking down at you, feeling his heart rate increase slightly.
He continued to hold onto you, watching you breathe in and breathe out, looking at the calmness on your face. He let out a shaky breath, before closing his eyes, resting his head against yours.

So you have know Noah for awhile now. But now everything seems to be crazy. He’s now more famous than before. But he has now idea how you feel about him. Now he kinda has a cocky attitude. I mean after all every girl wants him right. But you were different You never chased after him you tried to let him come to you. You were only friends until he wanted to to be more. Friends with benefits to be exact.
Now you kinda almost had everything you wanted but ther was something missing. It was love. But you couldn’t ask more than that. Could you?
As day went and weeks went you grew more closer to Noah. But did he grow a close to you as you did to him.
One morning you wake up and decided to text him.
“Hey”
“What’s up babe?” (Noah)
“Um nothing really. But I have a question. What are we?”
“...” (Noah)
“Ok”
You recived nothing after that. Not being anymore than friends hurt you. But what soon happend surprised you.
A knock knock at your door. You open it and there Noah stood with one flower in his hand.
“I didn’t want to do it over text”. I’d much rather do it in person. But will you be my girlfriend?” He asked.
With a huge smile and a nod of your head you say yes. And thing seem to become normal after that.

Not About You - 10
Tumblr media
Pairing: Damon Salvatore x ofc
Warning: mentions of torture and death, nothing beyond canon; school dance.
A/N: This is a bit of a filler but necessary.
Tumblr media
When Lucy woke, she found herself back in the car still wearing Damon’s jacket. She blinked away the sleep. “Where are we?”
Damon glanced over. “Hello, sleeping beauty. We’re a couple hours from home.”
She groaned as she stretched. “So, what’s the plan when we get back?”
He tapped the steering wheel with his thumbs. “Well, I feel like I would have noticed a grimoire tucked amongst the books in our library. I know several of the founder’s kept journals, if we can find some from that time maybe it will tell us something about Emily and what happened to her things when they killed her.”
“I assume we won’t find those just laying around either.”
He huffed a laugh. “Probably not, no.”
She pulled out her phone and scrolled through her notifications. “Elena gave Caroline a vervain necklace but didn’t tell her anything about it. Stefan’s not sure if he’s happy Elena can keep her mouth shut or angry that she’s not warning Caroline.”
“What’s up with that?” Damon asked.
Lucy arched a brow. “With what?”
“Stefan and Caroline.”
She shrugged. “Not sure. They’ve been spending a lot of time together though. She’s an infinitely better choice than Elena. I can’t imagine him going much longer without telling her the truth.”
“Why don’t we just take out an ad in the paper?”
“Stop it. I like Caroline. Compel Elena and Bonnie to forget.”
“Wait. Bonnie knows, too?”
“Mm-hmm. Elena told her after the whole possession thing.” Lucy put her feet up on the dash. “That makes me, Zach, Bonnie, Elena and Jeremy that know.”
Damon reached over and shoved her feet down. “And soon to be Caroline.”
Lucy put her feet back up as Damon signaled to take the next exit.
“Feet down or give me back my jacket.”
She stuck her tongue out at him but dutifully returned her feet to the floor.
Tumblr media
Fortunately, Stefan knew precisely where their father’s journal was. Damon wasn’t sure it would tell them anything, but it was a place to start. And it helped smooth the ruffled feathers from when Damon found out Stefan gave the compass to Elena. It was technically hers anyway, but that was beside the point.
Currently, Lucy was laying on the sofa with her feet on Damon’s lap while they took turns reading the journal. It was boring and hard to read so they were sharing their suffering. Stefan appeared in the doorway drawing her attention.
“Where are you off to?” she asked.
“Decade dance.” He turned back and forth showing her his outfit for approval.
“Looking sharp, Salvatore. Who are you taking?” She kept her fingers crossed that he would say Caroline.
“I’m escorting Caroline and Elena actually.” Lucy frowned and he held up his hands. “Don’t ask me. They’re the ones that came up with that plan.”
“Well, have a good time,” she said with a wave and watched him walk away.
He hadn’t been gone very long when Damon and Lucy heard a phone ringing that belonged to neither of them. Stefan’s cell phone laid on a table on the other side of the library.
Lucy answered it. “Stefan’s phone.”
“It’s Elena. Where is he?”
“On his way to yours. Forgot his phone.”
The girl breathed a sigh of relief. “Oh, good. This compass was going nuts but he must be here. Thanks.”
“No problem.”
Lucy had barely gotten settled when Damon’s phone rang. He frowned at the display then answered. “Yeah?” He listened for several beats. “We’ll be right there.”
He patted Lucy’s legs. “Let’s go, Williams. Little Miss Elena just got attacked. Grab your gear.”
“Of course, she did,” Lucy muttered. She equipped her wrist stakes and followed Damon out to his car.
When they arrived at Elena’s, Stefan filled them in. Apparently, the Gilberts were in the habit of randomly inviting pizza delivery people into their house and one happened to be the vampire that was after Elena. Lucy wasn’t sure how this was her problem exactly, but Stefan wanted their help so she’d give it.
“So let me get this right,” Lucy said as she followed Damon to the car so they could head to the dance. “We’re going to a high school dance in hopes the vampire will follow Elena there. To a building filled with innocent people.”
“Yep,” he answered popping the p.
She shook her head. “You’re not allowed to come up with the plans anymore.”
Lucy stayed close to Damon as they walked into the dance. She suppressed a shudder. This had never been her kind of thing. Too many people with too many expectations. Damon leaned toward her. “Stay close, kitten.”
She hummed instead of answering and grabbed onto his hand so they wouldn’t get separated. He shifted his hold so their fingers were laced together. He tugged her in one direction while Stefan and Elena went over to meet Caroline and Bonnie.
After a look around the room, they made their way to where Elena stood by herself. “Where’d everyone go?” Lucy asked.
“Dancing,” the girl answered, clearly not happy. Her gaze darted down to where Damon still held onto Lucy’s hand then back up. Elena smiled slightly and flipped her hair over her shoulder. “Damon, would you like to dance?”
“I would love to.” He turned his smirk onto Lucy. “Lucy, may I have this dance?”
She laughed and let him lead her onto the floor. “That was mean,” she said.
“It was, wasn’t it?” He shrugged. Once the song was over, they moved to the side of the dancefloor to scan the crowd again.
“Do we even know what we’re looking for?” she asked after a moment.
“Creepy vampire.”
She elbowed his side. “Found him. I win.”
“Not funny,” he grumbled.
She grinned. “We keep having this conversation. I told you, I’m hilarious.”
A man with blond hair wearing a letterman’s jacket approached them. “Hey, I don’t recognize you. How’d you get roped into chaperoning?”
Damon just looked at him, not interested in idle chitchat with a stranger.
“Oh, sorry,” the man said holding out a hand. “Alaric Saltzman, new history teacher.”
Damon shook his hand followed by Lucy. “Damon Salvatore, Lucy Williams,” the vampire introduced them.
“Salvatore? As in Stefan?” Alaric asked.
“That’s my little brother. I’m his guardian. Hence the chaperoning.”
“He’s a smart kid.”
Lucy looked the man over. Everything he said had a hint of insincerity. What was he up to?
“That’s our Stefan.” Damon said sounding pretty insincere himself. She rolled her eyes. These two would get along great.
The teacher shoved his hands in his pockets. “So, you always lived here?”
“Off and on. We traveled a lot.” Damon may have been answering the other man’s questions but his focus remained on the crowd in the gym.
“Oh yeah. Where? Around the states?”
And that was enough for Damon. He made it a practice of not sharing too much of his personal life and distrusted anyone that pushed for information.
Obviously unsettled by the look he was getting, Alaric backpedaled. “Sorry. I’m so nosey. Just ignore me. It was nice meeting you.”
They watched him walk away and Lucy leaned into Damon’s side so she could talk without being overheard. “I don’t trust him.”
Damon hummed. “Yeah, me either.”
A beat went by before she spoke again. “Damon?”
“Yes, kitten?”
“Are the lyrics of this song literally ‘it’s a slow dance’?”
He chuckled. “Yep.” He grasped her hand and pulled her to a different part of the floor to dance while they continued to look for the vampire.
They were in the midst of quiet conversation when Stefan interrupted them. “Have you seen Elena?”
Damon looked frantically around the room. “She was just here. What the hell?”
“We need to find her,” Stefan said. “Lucy, you stay with Caroline.”
Yeah, that wasn’t going to happen. She watched the brothers hurry from the gym before she found the blonde. “Hey Caroline.
“Lucy, it’s so good to see you.” The girl seemed genuinely happy, making Lucy smile.
“Listen, the boys and I have to take care of something real quick but we’ll be right back. Stay in the gym, okay? One of my asshole exes is running around and he’s bad news.” Lucy didn’t wait for a response before following in the direction the brothers went.
She hurried through the maze of hallways blocked by locked doors and discovered they were in the cafeteria. Rather than announcing her presence, she stayed in the hallway to keep watch. She crossed her arms and leaned against the doors.
Grunts of pain carried from inside and she flinched. She didn’t know what they were doing to the creepy vampire but it sounded unpleasant. A sound caught her attention and she looked over to find the new history teacher making his way down the hall.
He gave her an uneasy smile. “Lucy, right?”
“Last I checked. Alaric?”
“Call me Ric.” He tried to look past her through the window and the door and she shifted her stance to block his view. “What are you doing here? Kind of a long way from the dance.”
“Needed a break. Too many people.” She kept her gaze locked on him as he leaned on the wall across from her.
A particularly pain-filled groan sounded and he straightened. “Did you hear that?”
“Nope.”
His gaze ran over her but it didn’t faze her. She’d hate for Damon to have to kill Ric here but she didn’t trust the teacher. They’d have to keep an eye on him regardless.
A loud cry came from the room behind her and she bit the inside of her lip to keep from reacting.
“Someone just yelled in pain,” he said taking a step in her direction.
“No, they didn’t.”
He laughed in disbelief. “Yes, they did. I heard it.”
“I think you’re hearing things. There was no yell.” She kept her voice and her expression as neutral as possible.
He took another step forward. “I think I better check that room.”
Lucy straightened, moving one hand behind her leg. She dropped the stake into it and fingered the weapon. She’d never killed a human before but she’d do what was necessary to protect her boys even if nausea already rolled in her belly from the thought. “There’s nothing in that room you need to worry about, teacher. Trust me.”
There must have been something in her expression that warned him off. He stared at her a moment longer before nodding. “Okay.” As he walked away down the hall, she breathed a sigh of relief and tucked her stake back into place.
Just as he disappeared from view, the doors behind her opened making her jump. She spun around to find Damon looking her over. “Oh, hey, Luce. Where’ve you been? We found the vampire.”
Stupid Salvatore.

“Stefan, he’s your brother, who by the way hasn’t left your house in two weeks. Everything reeks of alcohol and he’s thrown up at least four times. Get your ass home and take care of him,” you scolded Stefan as you walked to the Salvatore house, carrying your purse and the groceries.
Ever since Damon killed Zach, you had a hard time trusting him, or even trusting Stefan, but that didn’t stop you from staying with them. Partially because you had nowhere else to go. You felt like you were their babysitter, always scolding them and having to take care of them, knowing they would screw up taking care of themselves.
“Okay, but he likes you,” Stefan retorted.
You rolled your eyes, holding back your words at him.
“So? I don’t like him. He threw up in my room, by the way. And also, he’s your brother. Whatever happened can be made up by a few words and hugs,” you groaned.
“I’m taking care of Caroline, and we agreed that it would be better if he wasn’t around her, seeing as he almost killed her and Ric’s children,” you could imagine the look on Stefan’s face.
Your face dropped as you saw the front door open.
“I gotta go…” you hung up the call with Stefan, placing your bags down, as you held your knife, walking in cautiously.
Your eyes watered as you held in your gags, smelling the powerful stench of liquor.
“Damon?” you called, keeping your eyes alert as you walked in the room.
“Oh, (Y/N), you’re back!” Damon exclaimed, approaching behind you.
“You left the front door open, you idiot!” you hissed, putting your knife down.
“Oopa. Did you get anymore whiskey?” he asked you, handing you his glass as he stumbled past you.
“Uhm, no. I didn’t? You guys have a cellar downstairs,” you said, slightly irritated.
“There’s nothing good left,” he shrugged.
“Are you-” you scrunched your eyes, glaring at him.
“I know! We should go out! Yeah, let’s go out to the grill, right now. We’ll go together,” he grabbed your arm, wrapping it around his as he tugged you.
“No, Damon. Sober up and clean this place up. Now. It smells worse than wolf in here,” you made a face of disgust.
“It doesn’t smell that bad,” he replied.
“You smell bad too. When was the last time you showered?” you asked, sounding more worried than upset.
“(Y/N), if I kept track of stupid things like that, I wouldn’t be awesome. I’d be like you.”
He’s drunk, he’s drunk you tried your hardest not to snap at him.
Your heart nearly stopped as you screamed, a body falling in front of you.
“Damon!” you yelled.
“Oh? Now how did that get there?!” he gasped, pretending to be shocked.
“Okay, that’s it,” you grabbed a small vial of vervain, throwing it at him as he yelled, his skin burning.
“(Y/N)!” he yelled.
“Snap out of it!” you yelled.
“Shut up and stop telling me what to do all the time! You’re not my mother!” he yelled.
“Damon…” you started.
He glared at you, speeding out of the house, leaving you with the body.
You sighed, getting to work as you began cleaning everything up.
---
“I don’t know what to do, here,” you groaned, laying down on the couch. The sun had set hours ago, and Damon still wasn’t back. You decided to call Bonnie to vent.
“Maybe do nothing,” she suggested.
“Funny. I’m being serious. I don’t know what’s wrong,” you said, laying on the couch.
“I know, but maybe it’s not your job. Ever since Elena… died, you’ve been doing everything for him. You’ve basically become his girlfriend. You gotta stop with that,” Bonnie said.
“I haven’t done everything.  And I’m definitely not acting like his girlfriend. You know how helpless both of them are.” you scoffed.
“Yeah, and they need to grow up and learn how to deal with it.”
“Okay, did I miss something? Why is everyone avoiding him?” you asked.
“We’re not avoiding him. Look, he tried to kill us all,” she started.
“Yeah, when he thought he was trapped in that stupid necklace. You guys can’t be avoiding him for that,” you said.
“We’re not. We’re just… keeping our distance,” Bonnie paused, you could tell she was lying.
“Yeah, sure. I should go out and find him. It’s getting late,” you yawned, hanging up the call as you got up from the couch.
---
You made your way through the woods, looking for Damon and Bonnie’s words preoccupied your mind. Were you really acting like his girlfriend? You knew that you felt something, deep, deep down for Damon, but you always pretended like it didn’t exist. He didn’t feel the same way back, and he would never see you as anything more than Zach’s daughter who hates him.
“Damon,” you stood in the woods, seeing Damon standing across from you, holding a bottle of whiskey, as expected.
“(Y/N),” he replied.
“Okay, what’s going on, Damon?” you sighed.
“Nothing’s going on,” he replied, not looking at you.
“You don’t sleep at night, you spend literally all of the past two weeks drinking. You killed someone,” you started listing his actions.
“This isn’t like you,”
“You don’t know me, princess. Go run off to your little castle as stay away from me,” he rolled his eyes.
“Unfortunately for me, my castle is your home too. And I’m not leaving without you. You know, I hate you. So much. You’re annoying, you’re rude, you’re loud. Whenever I want to be alone, you consistently bother me. So, I’m doing the same. Don’t tell me you’re okay. Your mother is back from the dead, your brother and your best friends are avoiding you, and your girlfriend is in a coma till your best friend dies. It’s okay to let out your emotions. You don’t have to bottle them all up and shove them down with large quantities of alcohol. It’s okay to be human,” part of you had absolutely no idea where those words came from, but you were glad they came from somewhere, seeing them affect Damon as he looked at you.
“That’s where you’re wrong. I’m not human, (Y/N),” he started.
“That doesn’t mean you can’t feel human. Now tell me what’s wrong,” you crossed your arms, staring at him.
“What the hell do you want me to say?” he exclaimed.
“Say what you’re feeling.”
“Well, what do you mean?! Do you want me to say that I’m sad that my mother is alive?! ‘Cuz I’m not! I’m pissed! She pretended to be dead, she abandoned me! She left me with my stupid, abrasive, and abusive sone of a bitch father, and didn’t look back?! Do you want me to roll up into a little ball and cry? Cry like a little bitchy baby because my girlfriend is dead? Because my brother and my friends won’t talk to me?! Well then, I’m sorry to disappoint you, but you’re not getting it,” he yelled, taking a big gulp of the whiskey bottle.
“Well at least I know you didn’t turn off your humanity,” you said under your breath.
“Why are you still here? Stefan left, Caroline left, Bonnie left, everyone left,” you said.
“Because I care about you. I care about what you do, and what happens to you,” you replied softly.
“That’s cheap. You always talk about how much you hate me. How much you despise me,” he spat.
“You killed my dad, Damon. Of course, I hated you. But things change,” you sighed.
He clenched his jaw, walking towards you as your heart rate quickened.
He wrapped his arms around you tightly, as you jumped slightly in shock.
You smiled softly, hugging him back.
“Thank you for not leaving me,” he said softly.
“I never will. How about we get home, yeah?”
---
“Damon, no not here,” you tried pulling him up, as he laid in your bed.
“Damon, get up, this isn’t your room,” you sighed.
He ignored you, closing his eyes, as he almost instantly passed out.
You scoffed, rolling your eyes as you tucked him into your bed.
You stroked his face softly, smiling down at him.
“You know, last time you passed out in my bed, I had to sleep with Stefan, cuz Elena was in your room. That stupid blanket hogger,” you laughed softly at the memory.
“Even then, I wasn’t mad at you for it. I don’t know why, I guess deep down....” you drifted away from your thought, looking at his sleeping figure.
“For whatever crazy reason, I like you, Damon. I don’t know why, I might never know why. But I do. I know you like Elena anyway, it doesn’t matter. You’re passed out anyway, I know you can’t hear me. I don’t even know what I’m doing now. This is borderline stalkerish,” you let out a breath.
You stroked his hair softly, kissing his forehead.
“Goodnight, Damon,” you said softly, leaving your room.
---
“(Y/N)?” Damon walked into his room, looking for you, seeing you passed out on the bed, your feet on the headboard, as your head fell off the edge of the bed. He laughed softly to himself.
He took a chair, sitting next to the bed as you slept.
“You know, you’re a great friend, (Y/N),” he started.
“I’ve been… weirdly okay with Elena gone. That’s part of what was bothering me. I’ve been wondering why for a while. But now, I know. Or at least realized last night. It’s because of you. I like you, I have feelings for you. You’ve always been there. I know you don’t like me, but I had to say it. Whether or not you can hear me. I think I love you, (Y/N/N). Your annoying, stubborn ass. I love you and I don’t know why I didn’t realize before,” he held your hand, kissing it softly.
“Hmm, why are you holding my hand?” you groaned, sitting up in the bed.
“You’re awake! How long have you been awake for?” he immediately asked.
“Uhm, about 10 seconds. Do you always hold my hand and kiss it when I’m sleeping?” you replied, raising an eyebrow.
“That depends. Do you always sleep with your head hanging off the bed? He retorted.
“Whatever. How are you feeling?” you rolled your eyes.
“Good. Want breakfast?” he asked.
“Are you gonna poison it?” you asked.
“Yes. Yes, I am,” he said sarcastically.
“Great,” you smiled.
He ran downstairs, as you heard some music playing.
You walked downstairs, leaning against the doorway as you watched him make some pancakes, dancing with his spatula.
You smiled softly to yourself, realizing you were falling more in love with him.
But how couldn’t you?

WITCH HUNT - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: Momentum Pictures
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS: In modern America magic is real. In this America witches are feared and persecuted by US authorities. Teenager Claire and her family are part of an intricate network that helps these women escape across the border to seek asylum in Mexico. When their mode of transport is disrupted by federal witch hunters, trouble befalls the family as they struggle to hide two young witches within the walls of their home. As witch hunters close in and strange magic begins haunting the family, Claire discovers that she may have more in common with these witches than she could have ever imagined.
REVIEW: Filmmaker Elle Callahan’s WITCH HUNT embraces themes of Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible,” the underground railroad, “The Diary of Anne Frank,” along with beliefs and issues on the “other” in our zeitgeist to weave this tail of persecution and horror.
Unlike those tales, Callahan’s tale embraces fantastical elements of magic and the supernatural. The film begins with a witch burned at the stake as her daughters watch. They end up in Claire’s home. The narrative focuses on Claire and her thoughts on the plight of the witches, her mother’s aiding them and pending legislation on witches and witchcraft. I appreciated the metaphors and the issues she asked us to consider. Some of the character names and plot devices pay homage to the stories of the Salem Witch Trials as well as few films about witchcraft. Some of her contemporary tests for witch finding, as well as some of the weapons she presents, were interesting. I was a bit disappointed that there were no warlocks, male witches, but I understand how that might not figure into the plot. In terms of the big reveal, I didn’t find it as much of a surprise due to the fact that some elements hint at it. Many of the film’s more subtler moments I found more effective than the bigger special/visual effects. I screened the film with my adolescent daughter, a big consumer of the WB fantasy/supernatural shows. She truly enjoyed WITCH HUNT, especially its more focused, adult themes than the series she watches.
WITCH HUNT features some nice locations and sets. I like the concept of the house with the space between the walls where the witches hide, however it looked like a rather large space. Also, given the light coming in between the wood slats it felt a bit off given the exterior of the house. The film is nicely shot, well edited, and an effect score by Blitz//Berlin. The visual and special effects were nice enhancements to the plot and set the tone for the story.
I enjoyed the performances. Gideon Adlon, Elizabeth Mitchell and Christian Camargo are excellent as the three main characters that drive the tension and drama of the tale. Gideon Adlon plays Claire and wonderfully crafts a complex character at odds with her beliefs and her mother’s actions. The cast easily draws in the viewer and takes us for the ride. They allow the viewer to feel the tension and drama of the story and allow us to be emotionally invested.
WITCH HUNT is a timely tale that is as thought provoking as it is emotionally engaging. It’s nicely written, has strong production values, and is a high end independent film. Elle Callahan does an exceptional job of allowing the story to come through and does not distract the viewer with effects. The story stays focused and keeps the viewer engaged. The performances and direction drive the narrative to deliver a highly entertaining film. I enjoyed Elle Callahan’s work and am eager to see what she delivers next.

Correction: Jack mistakenly states the date of the 1994 solar eclipse to be May 16 rather than May 10. What a dweeb!
