Kuuga and Decade + 4. Forehead Kiss
Onodera Yuusuke and Godai Yuusuke
Oh fun. Anyway, I am endlessly self-referential, so this story does reference a previous meeting between these two, which you can read here.
The house moves, the wind changes, and Yuusuke stands up suddenly and says, "I think I'm going to go for a walk."
Everyone turns to look at him, which is reasonable--that's usually Tsukasa's line, or sometimes Daiki's. Natsumi peers at him, forehead wrinkling in concern. "Are you feeling ok?"
"Oh, yeah. Yeah." He doesn't look ok, he looks distracted and slightly haunted, but his voice is as steady ever. "I'm fine, I just think I need some air."
He leaves the studio and walks, not really watching where he's going. His feet know the way, even if his mind doesn't, and anyway, it's a nice walk. The sky is really blue today, and the breeze is pleasant.
Eventually he stops, at a street corner where a man is juggling for a child whose tears are slowly dissolving into a smile, and when the child's mother arrives, the juggler turns to him and says, "Hey, it's you again. I thought I felt someone coming. You wanna get some lunch?"
Ten minutes later, they're sitting down at a coffee shop, drinks and sandwiches in hand, and for a little while they don't talk at all. They don't even look at each other, really, just at their drinks and the tabletop and the other diners. It's not a comfortable silence, but the tension isn't precisely bad, either. It's just...tense. Waiting for one of them to speak.
And then they both speak at once.
"How did you get--"
"You said you can't--"
They stop, laugh, and there are a couple more false starts before the other one, the one Yuusuke can't help thinking of as The Real One, says, "I don't think we ever introduced ourselves last time we met, did we?"
"No, we don't." Although they do know each other's given names, Yuusuke remembers that, thinking of a worried-looking man with a tired smile calling, "Yusuke!" and both of them looking up at once.
"Godai." An offered hand across the table.
Yuusuke stares at it for a moment before shaking, and the world doesn't explode, but they do both flinch as if shocked and then recover themselves. "Onodera."
"How do you get here?"
"It's, uh, it's really complicated, actually. And I don't know if I could explain it, I don't understand it super well myself."
Godai laughs. "Fair enough." A glance around the coffee shop. "It's funny, we barely know each other but somehow I feel like I'm having lunch with my brother."
Yuusuke blinks. "You have a brother?"
"Mm? Oh, no, no, I mean hypothetically. No actual brothers. I have a little sister, though. You?"
"I have...I had an older sister, sort of." At Godai's puzzled look, "We weren't related, we were just really close. She was, uh. She was killed."
A flicker of dismay crosses Godai's face, and then understanding, and he says, "I'm sorry."
"It's...it was years ago. It's all right. Thanks." Yuusuke pauses, hesitant to ask what he wants to ask, and decides to go for it anyway, because he's sure that Godai will understand. "Did you lose anyone?"
Godai shrugs and has a sip of coffee. "Just myself. You know how it goes."
"Yeah. I think it happens to all of us, a little."
"All of us who were Kuuga?"
"All of us who are Riders."
Godai's eyebrows rise. "Are there a lot? I mean, I've met a few others, but I've never really gotten the impression that we were an especially big group."
"Over a hundred." Yuusuke pauses, counting vaguely on his fingers, thinking through things he's heard from Tsukasa and Daiki. "Actually I think over two hundred, I'm not sure. I haven't met most of them. It's...kind of terrible, actually, how the world keeps needing people to do this sort of thing."
"Sure, but it's kind of wonderful too, isn't it? That we're here to do it?" Godai doesn't exactly smile, but in a way that Yuusuke understands immediately. "I mean, if it wasn't us, who would it have been? And I bet you met someone really important because of it."
Thinking of the worried, loving looks the others had directed at him before he left the studio does make Yuusuke's shoulders relax a little bit. "A couple of people, actually. You?"
His shoulders had relaxed; Godai's entire face relaxes, just slightly, and he gets a distant look for a moment and says, "Yeah. Yeah, I met someone pretty important. Wouldn't take that back for anything." He takes a sip of coffee. "We just got a cat, actually. You guys have a cat?"
"No, just Daiki."
Eyebrows.
"He's a lot like a cat."
"Sheds on the furniture?"
"Comes and goes however he likes, falls asleep in inconvenient spots, affectionate at really weird times, sometimes he bites."
"Yeah, that sounds like a cat."
They finish the remains of their sandwiches in silence again, drain the last of their cups of coffee, and leave the coffee shop side by side, not quite near enough to touch. Outside, they stop, reaching out simultaneously as if to shake hands again, and then in a moment of mutual agreement they hug instead.
"It's kind of nice, you know," Yuusuke says, ignoring the finger-in-an-electric socket sensation running up and down his spine, "I always sort of wanted a brother."
"Definitely. I mean, I know I was joking about that, but it's kind of true, isn't it?" Godai turns his head slightly, kisses Yuusuke on the temple, and then lets go of him. "Hoo, that's a feeling I'm not going to forget soon."
"It's definitely something, I think maybe we shouldn't try it again."
"Probably not." A thumbs-up, a grin. "Stop by and say hi the next time you're in town, yeah? You can meet my guy, I'll meet your people, we'll have a whole family dinner or something."
Yuusuke nods and offers a thumbs-up in return, smiling. "That sounds great, yeah. I think I'd like that."

Note
-context: this is a year or two after the minific where every Rider searched for Takeru and was then saved by Ichigo himself-
Aruto: And that’s basically what happened.
Aruto: I admit to being out of my depth when every Rider in history were called in to help.
Aruto: There were even two Kamen Rider Kuugas who helped.
Touma: Wait, why Takeru-senpai of all people?
Ikki: And two Kuugas?
Aruto: Well one was Onodera-san and the other was Godai-san.
Touma: Onodera-san was Kadoya’s friend, he’s also a Rider?
Aruto: From what I gathered, All of Kadoya’s friends are Riders.
Aruto: Well except for Natsumi-san’s grandfather
Ikki: Huh, if I remember correctly, Kadoya can go to different dimensions.
Aruto: Yep, Onodera-san is Kamen Rider Kuuga in a different dimension.
Touma: But why Takeru-senpai?
Aruto: Well, you know why he’s called Ghost?
Touma: Kento mentioned it to me once.
Touma: No, Takeru-senpai mentioned it once.
Touma: I think he died but was later revived.
Aruto: Well he was dead when he was an active Rider, in fact, he died four times, and that’s just the lowest estimate.
Ikki: Wait, lowest estimate?
Touma: He wasn’t joking?
Touma: Kento thought Takeru-senpai was joking.
Touma: He said it was almost a running-gag.
Ikki: Takeru-senpai was chosen as a sacrifice because of the amount of times he’s died, didn’t he?
Aruto: Got it one.
Aruto: Although, it’s important to note that those “deaths” do not exactly mean that his physical body stopped functioning.
Aruto: Technically speaking, Takeru-senpai only died once.
Aruto: And he operated as a literal ghost, as Kamen Rider Ghost.
Touma: Basically, his physical body died once but his soul disappeared, and that counted as his death.
Aruto: Yeah.
Aruto: That led to the villain believing that no one would miss Takeru-senpai, because he’s already died many times over.
Ikki: What?! That’s just ridiculous.
Aruto: And he soon found that out.
Aruto: When Ichigo himself ordered all Riders, since his time, to assemble and blow that joint.
Aruto: Apparently. Takeru-senpai has met Hongo-san and they’ve kept in touch ever since they met.
Touma: I’m happy it went well for Takeru-senpai
Ikki: I’m happy I became a Kamen Rider
Ikki: It’s because that I became a Rider I’ve met a lot of extraordinary people.
Aruto: No matter how chaotic they can be.
Touma: But that doesn’t change the fact that they are heroes in their own right.
Ikki: I hope to one day meet Hongo-san
Touma: Aruto and I technically met him.
Aruto: But not to the extent our senpai has.
Touma: So we’re with you on that wish.
Oh wow I didn’t actually remember this fic until now lol XD this is why I took a break you guys
Though, when I did write that, Saber was already airing so the SoL gang would’ve already met Takeru several times (including their canon crossover) and would be part of the rescue mission :))
Also, Touma has formally met Hongou-san, in this other fic I wrote. This one I do remember well, because I wrote it on the actual day of the 50th anniversary XD I don’t think I ever had Aruto interact with Hongou-san though I do have a fic where he kicked Amatsu Gai’s butt on Aruto’s behalf

Day 7: Future/Post Confession
I can't believe yet another @takaritsuweek has come and gone so fast 😭❤ everyone in this Fandom is so talented and im obsessed with the nostalgia content 💘 please enjoy my last one shot for this week ☺
***
Onodera Ritsu was being weird, which could only mean one thing: something was wrong and he wasn't talking to Masamune about it.
Masamune had really hoped that things would go smoother after Ritsu confessed, but that was foolish. Masamune was so, undeniably happy, but they weren't perfect people. Both of them still had things to work on, separately and together. One of those things was more readily relying on one another. So, Masamune was determined to find out what was wrong.
Ritsu just seemed a lot more...spacey than usual. And anxious. And maybe a little gloomy? Masamune couldn't quite put his finger on it, but he knew that he didn't like it.
Currently, Ritsu was over at Masamune's apartment, helping to clean up the dishes as the two of them had just finished dinner. Ritsu was at Masamune's place quite frequently and Masamune always brought up the idea of moving in together, but Ritsu hadn't quite come around to it yet, mostly because he knew for a fact that it would affect any work the two of them brought home. Masamune got...distracted easily and Ritsu tended to get swept away. So, for now Ritsu was content with a lot of sleepovers.
Once they finished cleaning, Masamune led Ritsu into the living room by his hand. He sat down unceremoniously on the couch before pulling Ritsu down with him and on to his lap, making Ritsu's face burn red.
I kind of hope he never gets used to this, Masamune thought, loving the sight of Ritsu's adorably embarrassed expression.
"What do you think you're doing?" Ritsu asked, trying to sound scolding, but he only succeeded in sounding nervous.
Masamune wrapped his arms around Ritsu's waist. "I just want to talk and I figured if I have you like this you won't be able to run away." Like how you love to do.
Ritsu couldn't even argue against that logic, but he made a displeased face anyway. "Fine. What is it?"
"Is everything okay with you?" Masamune asked.
"Huh? Yeah, I'm fine." Ritsu said dismissively.
"You just seem like you've had something on your mind lately." Masamune said. "Making me worried."
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to worry you." Ritsu apologized immediately.
"Don't say sorry, there's nothing to be sorry for, I just wanna know if there's something going on." Masamune said, trying to sound reassuring.
Ritsu chewed on his lower lip nervously before he spoke again. "I guess I have been thinking a bit..." He started vaguely.
"What about?" Masamune pressed gently.
"Well, my mom's gotten off my back about An-chan, but not about settling down. She's been trying to set up matchmaking sessions, introducing me to daughters of friends of hers whenever I visit, sending me info about singles events." Ritsu tried not to cringe at the thought of going to one of those. "And I just...I think maybe it's time I tell my parents about you. About us." Ritsu said. "I mean, I know we only started officially d-dating not too long ago, but I feel like we're both kind of in this for the long haul." He laughed nervously. They've both been in this for the past ten years, after all. It was hardly too soon to let his parents be in the know. "So, um, it seems only right to tell them..."
"If you want to tell them then you should." Masamune said.
"You make things sound so simple." Ritsu sighed. "It could go really, really wrong, you know?"
"I know. But the other option is keeping it a secret forever. Which, you can if you want, but it might be difficult to eventually explain to your parents when they visit why you have a longterm male roommate and you both wear matching wedding rings and share a room and take care of a little girl who calls both of you dad."
Ritsu's face flushed at Masamune projection of their future together, his heartbeat picking up in pace. "You want to have a daughter?"
"Someday, I think it'd be nice. But we're not even past the step of me meeting your parents, so I don't think they're going to get grandchildren anytime soon." Masamune planted a quick kiss on Ritsu’s shoulder.
"W-Wait, meeting?! I was just going to tell them, I didn't plan on having you meet them yet!" Ritsu said quickly.
"Ritsu, this is your mom we're talking about. If you tell her I exist she will track me down and interrogate the hell out of me whether you want her to or not." Masamune deadpanned.
Ritsu groaned and slumped against Masamume, knowing that he was right. "Maybe I should just test the waters first? It doesn't seem fair to throw all of us in at once."
Masamune hesitated to agree, subconsciously playing with Ritsu's hair. "I want to be there." He said firmly. "I understand you're worried, but like you said, things could go wrong and I want to be there for you if they do."
"You're only one door away." Ritsu said.
"Too far." Masamune insisted, pressing a kiss to Ritsu's forehead.
Ritsu rolled his eyes, trying hard not to smile. "You're absolutely ridiculous."
"Mhm. Besides, I can't charm the hell out of your parents if I'm busy next door worrying about you."
"Oh, is that your plan? To be all cool and suave until they can't possibly reject our relationship?" Ritsu asked sarcastically.
"Yes, exactly."
Ritsu shook his head before he refocused and took a deep breath. "How's this weekend?"
"I can do this weekend." Masamune said.
"I'll invite them to my place for dinner and hopefully it will be totally boring and uneventful and they won't care about us being together at all."
"Yeah, the woman who has hounded you about marriage for over ten years is going to not care about you being in a romantic relationship." Masamune said sarcastically.
Ritsu groaned loudly.
Masamune chuckled. "What about your dad? How do you think he'll react?"
"No idea, which is honestly worse."
"We'll handle it." Masamune promised and sealed it with a kiss.
-
"I can't do this, I think I should call them and cancel, tell them I'm sick." Ritsu said as he and Masamune cooked dinner together. Technically it wouldn't be a lie since Ritsu was feeling pretty nauseous.
Ritsu had spent all day yesterday making sure his apartment was spotless and then earlier today he and Masamune had gone grocery shopping together since Ritsu’s options for dinner had been a little slim.
"Oh, yeah, tell your mom that you're sick, I'm sure that will make her stay away instead of making her want to come over more." Masamune said sarcastically.
"You're no help."
"I thought I was being a lot of help, unless you wanna cut the onions." Masamune said, not looking up from the cutting board where he was working on the veggies.
Ritsu huffed and turned away to sit at the kitchen table, putting his head in his hands. He couldn't do this, he was such an idiot for ever thinking that he could. Introducing his parents to Masamune? He had never even mentioned liking men to them! And now suddenly he was going to announce that he had a boyfriend! There was only one way this could go: badly.
"Hey," Masamune said softly, abandoning his cutting station to sit next to him. "Its gonna be okay."
"You don't know that."
"I know, and honestly I'm kind of freaking out too. I don't think there's anything that could prepare me for meeting your parents. I want them to like me, I want them to think I'm a good fit for you because I know they're always going to be a big part of your life. Even if they can be a little overbearing, they love you, and it would kind of really suck if the people who loved you the most hated me." Masamune said. "But, either way I know that no matter what happens we'll still be together and for me that's enough." Masamune placed a comforting hand on Ritsu's knee.
"Even if my mom spends every single family gathering trying to drive you away? Even if she keeps trying to set me up on blind dates? Or, worse, tries to convince my dad to mess with your work?"
"Ritsu, the only thing your mom could do to keep me away from you is put out a hit on me."
"Don't joke about that."
"Oh come on, your parents don't have that many connections." Masamune said. "...right?"
"I really couldn't tell you."
"Jesus Christ." Masamune said, breathing through a laugh. "Look, the point is; we're gonna be okay."
Ritsu placed his hand on top of Masamune's and gave it a squeeze as he slowly nodded. "Okay...okay." He said. "Let's hurry and finish dinner then. My mom likes to get places early."
Masamune smiled softly and stole a swift kiss before happily helping Ritsu in the kitchen once more.
Eventually, there came a knock at the door. "I'll keep an eye on the food while you go get it." Masamune said. Dinner was just nearly done.
Ritsu swallowed hard and nodded, turning to leave the kitchen.
"Wait." Masamune grabbed his hand and kissed him quickly. "For good luck." He winked.
"Y-You're such an idiot." Ritsu scolded before quickly going to the front door and opening it.
Youko and Tatsuo Onodera stood side by side at Ritsu's door. Youko broke out into a smile and threw her arms around Ritsu before anyone could get a word out.
"H-Hi, mom." Ritsu smiled nervously as he hugged her back. "Hi, dad." He said to Tatsuo over Youko's shoulder as he was still being tightly squeezed.
"You feel skinny." Youko said as soon as she pulled away, pouting at her son. Ritsu was not surprised to be scolded instead of greeted, but he knew his mother meant well.
"Well, its a good thing I've invited you over to eat then. Come in." Ritsu said with a sheepish expression, attempting to play it off.
"It smells good." Tatsuo said.
"Ritsu, don't tell me you've left the food unattended for long." Youko said worriedly as they shuffled toward the kitchen.
"No." Ritsu's hands started to shake. "The foods being watched. Right now. B-by my b-boyfriend."
""Boyfriend?!"" Both Youko and Tatsuo exclaimed.
"How long has this been a thing?" Tatsuo asked.
"Oh...ten years or so..."
"Ten YEARS?!" Youko had heard enough, marching into the kitchen with her husband and son following not far behind.
"M-Mom, wait, maybe we should talk a little more-"
"You." Youko pointed accusingly at Masamune. "Are you my son's so called partner?"
"I am. My name is Takano Masamune, it's nice to-"
"Takano? I'm not familiar with that name. What's your family background?" Youko interrupted.
Masamune blinked, glancing between Ritsu and his parents, a little confused by the question. "Uh, my mother is a lawyer and my step father is a doctor, but I'm not on speaking terms with either of them."
"A boy with a troubled family history? Hardly seems like a good choice for a partner." Youko commented to Ritsu.
"Mother! That's incredibly rude!" Ritsu defended Masamune immediately. What was she even going on about?
"What do you do for a living?" Youko asked Masamune.
Masamune played along with her questions as he didn't know what else to do. "I'm the editor in chief for Marukawa Publishing's shoujo manga department: Emerald."
"Emerald? Onodera Ritsu, do you mean to tell me that you are dating your boss?" Youko said, putting her hands on her hips.
"I've heard about the great things you've done for Emerald, Takano." Tatsuo admitted. "But it does seem to be a conflict of interest to be dating a subordinate."
"I've been in love with him since I was twelve! Way before he ever became my boss!" Ritsu said quickly before a realization dawned on him. "Wait...these are the things you're upset about? His family and his job?"
"They're very important things to consider when picking a partner, Ritsu." Youko said. "You know, if you had told me that you were rejecting all those lovely girls because they were girls I could have been setting you up with perfectly charming and handsome men!" Youko pouted.
Ritsu wanted to laugh. And cry. And hug his mom and kiss Masamune and melt into the floor in total relief.
"I'm sorry, but I'll have to object to any matchmaking sessions." Masamune jumped in.
Youko frowned sternly at him. "Just what exactly makes you worthy of my one and only son?"
"I know I'm not the kind of person that you would normally want for Ritsu, but I love him. I've loved him for over ten years and there's nothing that could ever stop me from loving him. I will always, always take care of him and make him happy and if there ever comes a day that I don't then please feel free to come back and snatch him away from me because just like you I think Ritsu only deserves the best. I will always be loyal, reliable, and honest with him. And, if you'd still like to join us for dinner, I can show you that I'm not completely useless around a kitchen."
Youko did not move, nor did her disapproving expression melt away, but Tatsuo stepped forward to put a hand on his wife's shoulder.
"So, ten years huh? That's a long time. Why don't you tell us how this all started?" He smiled as he ushered his wife to sit down.
Ritsu beamed, tearing up a bit.
"Well, I was in our school's library..."

Trifiesta Day 2: Karaoke
Summary:
Henmi drags everyone to a karaoke. Yokozawa is reluctant, of course, but his boyfriend convinces him to give it a try.
~~~~
Yokozawa regretted his decision as soon as they arrived.
Kirishima, on the other hand, seemed ecstatic like a child in a candy store.
“It’s a bad idea…”
“Come on, Takafumi, it’s gonna be fun!”
The use of the first name got Kirishima an elbow in the stomach as well as a seat on the opposite side of the room from Yokozawa, between Yasuda -good- and Takano -not good. For his part, Yokozawa ended up on the far end of the couch so his only companion was Yukina -Yokozawa still wondered how the poor student had been dragged into Henmi’s childish plans, though he was pretty sure that the baby-faced guy seated on the other side of Yukina had something to do with it- and the young man’s height reminded him of how ridiculous nine grown men in a karaoke bar must look. However, Yokozawa had to admit that successfully reuniting all of them, especially Hatori and Yasuda and himself, was pretty impressive. Only Mino managed to escape.
Yokozawa had meant to decline Henmi’s proposal, he really had. Then Kirishima had appeared out of nowhere with his shit-eating grin and handsome looks and when he had agreed on his behalf, Yokozawa had found himself unable to object.
He had become weak lately.
“Whoah, I didn’t know they have so many songs here!”
“Yes, they even have anime theme songs! Ah, I worked on this one!”
“Really?! I loved it so much, you did such a great job!”
Yokozawa’s irritation grew, although he should have called it: of course this airhead Henmi would get along with Onodera, of all people. He sank a little more into the sofa.
“I want to try this one first!” Henmi shouted happily as he grabbed one of the microphones at their disposal.
“It’s a duet, Henmi-san, you’ll need a partner.” Takano stated right before he pushed Onodera from the couch, the young editor almost crashing into Henmi, “I’m sure Onodera will be very happy to sing it with you.”
Happiness was not exactly what shone through his voice, “Takano-san! Please don’t assume things on my behalf! A- And I can’t sing, anyway!”
Takano shrugged, “What’s the problem, Onodera? You should be more grateful to Henmi, he’s a fan of your work after all.”
Did they really need to flirt right here in front of everyone? Onodera grimaced.
“Don’t worry, Onodera-san,” Yukina interrupted with his usual sun-like smile, “It’s a karaoke bar, I’m sure no one here can sing!”
Yokozawa started to wonder if the mic’s cable would be strong enough for strangulation and who would go first -Onodera, Kirishima and Henmi or himself?
It was Henmi who gave him the final blow, “Please, Onodera-san, if I sing alone I will look miserable in front of everyone!” He pleaded with a pout.
Everyone laughed and Onodera finally agreed to take the mic Henmi had been shaking under his nose for the past minute, not without a red face and a death glare in Takano’s direction.
Henmi was about to press play when they heard a knock on the door and Hatori stood up to open it on one of the staff members. The young woman asked if she could bring them anything and an amused grin crossed her features when she saw all of them in the little room, but it promptly disappeared giving way to a commercial smile. Yokozawa felt himself blush, an embarrassment he seemingly shared with his past-rival who looked like he was about to melt and explode at the same time. They ordered some alcohol and she left, and Yokozawa was sure he had heard a giggle as Hatori went back to his seat and Henmi nearly pounced on the play button.
Yokozawa sighed: it was going to be a long evening.
---
The evening had turned into a full night and it was not a pretty sight.
Henmi and Onodera had opened with a horrible love song that they had sung terribly, which wasn’t really a surprise but still, and among the thirty-seven other songs that had been sung after that thirteen were by Henmi alone, four by Kisa, three by Kirishima and two by Onodera. Yukina, Hatori and Yasuda each sang one solo but Takano abstained from it, although he did sang two duets with Onodera -both cheesy love songs that made Kirishima smile at him with what was probably unconditional love and had Yokozawa considering jumping out the window- and another one with Hatori. Kisa had succeeded in dragging Onodera into three duets, then a trio with Henmi first and Kirishima next, and then he sang with Yukina -they had started to suck each other’s face in the middle of it and were making out on the sofa since then- but not before the young art major and the newbie editor had the chance to sing together. The whole Emerald team had joined at some point to try -and fail- to sing along the Power Ranger theme song. Kirishima and Yasuda had then followed with an awful cover of an english song about girls wanting to have buns -or something like that, Yokozawa had been too busy watching Kirishima’s happy face to really get the lyrics.
Of course, all of them had sung off-key.
That is where they were now: everyone was at least a little tipsy, at worst dead drunk, Hatori was taping furiously on his phone, Yukina and Kisa were still kissing right next to Yokozawa, Takano was listening to Onodera’s drunk mumbling while Henmi was drunkenly nodding to everything despite probably not understanding a word, Yasuda had fallen asleep and Kirishima…
“Hey, Yokozawa, you haven’t sung anything tonight.”
...had decided to drop a bomb, apparently.
Henmi immediately jumped on his feet and for a second it seemed like he was sober again but his laborious attempt to deliver a full, coherent sentence was good proof that he was only one step from alcohol poisoning. After a couple of seconds he gave up and simply threw one of the mics on Yokozawa’s lap while giving him the puppy eyes.
Yokozawa may have become weak, but not that weak to indulge Henmi so easily.
It was mostly the alcohol’s doing, as well as a deep desire to distance himself from the lovey-dovey couple next to him -and maybe he wanted just a little to be the reason for Kirishima’s smile- that made him take the device firmly in his hand and stand up.
“ONE song, then I’m leaving.”
Henmi squealed happily as Yokozawa searched for the remote to select his song. The young salaryman knew that time was of the essence because if any of his colleagues got his hand on it, he would be at his mercy, and he could already feel Kirishima and Takano’s eyes scanning the room enthusiastically.
“Oh, I got the remote!” A shout from the corner of the room made them all turn in one movement.
Kisa, who was still half-way on Yukina’s lap, was rocking the precious object between his two hands, a crazy evil smile covering his childish features.
And to think that Yokozawa thought it could not get worse.
“I think we have to honour the Wild Bear’s very unusual display of social skills,” Kisa giggled viciously, “so it must be a special song just for him. Luckily, I know exactly the perfect one!”
There was no time for objection and as Yukina gave him an apologetic look, Kisa selected the instrument of torture.
“It’s in english, but you work in sales, Yokozawa-san, so you must speak english at least a little, right?”
When Yokozawa recognized it, he cursed the god who made him incapable of turning down a fight. But here he was and it was too late to back down so he rolled up his sleeves and loosened his tie, and he made sure to look directly into Kirishima’s eyes while doing it. He was satisfied by the blush that appeared on the older man’s cheeks. He even saw Yasuda, who had probably been woken up by Kisa and Henmi’s mess, nudge Kirishima’s shoulder with a smirk.
Good, at least Kirishima was tasting his own medicine.
The instrumental began to come out of the speakers in the room. Yokozawa breathed deeply, then he opened his mouth.
“There are worse things I could do…”
The room went silent instantly. Onodera’s babbling had stopped and so had Hatori’s angry texting and all the chats and the laughs. Yokozawa tried to ignore it.
“Than go with a boy or two…”
They were all looking at him now, he could feel their gaze on the back of his head.
“Even though the neighborhood thinks I’m trashy, and no good…”
Fuck! Stay focused, Takafumi!
“I suppose it could be true, but there are worse things I could do!”
No movement, no sound, only Yokozawa, standing up in the middle of a karaoke room like an idiot and singing a stupid musical tune.
Courage, it’s almost over.
“... I don’t steal and I don’t lie, but I can feel and I can cry! A fact I’ll bet you never knew...”
There it comes.
“...That’s the worst thing I could do.”
The music slowly died and Yokozawa found himself surrounded by silence. Several seconds passed without anyone saying anything and it was all the time the man needed to gather his things, grab his jacket and reach the door.
“I’m leaving now. Thanks for the invitation Henmi. Good night.” And he was out.
Yokozawa strode the halls as fast as he could without looking like a rabbit running away from the wolves, that is until he heard the sound of a door opening behind him and he practically ran out of the building. The streets were deserted at this hour so he allowed himself to let the deep blush he had repressed until now invade his face. He could not believe what he had done, and in front of all his colleagues no less! Yokozawa prayed that the alcohol in their veins would erase their memory because he was pretty sure none of them would leave him alone after this horrendous display of ridicule. He was screwed.
Then he heard someone shouting “Wait for me, Sinatra!” behind him followed by kick footsteps. Yokozawa picked up the pace as much as he could without blatantly running but the man chasing him had the advantage of longer legs and a way more calm mind at the moment, and so he ended up in a dark back alley with his back against a cold brick wall and a foreign tongue caressing the roof of his mouth. The arms holding him were gentle, he could have gotten rid of them easily, he did not.
Their kiss was interrupted by a group of teens on the other side of the street when one of the girls jokingly yelled at them to ‘get a room’. Both of them giggled softly, like some teenagers caught making out in an empty classroom. Kirishima tightened his embrace around Yokozawa's torso while hiding his face against his neck, gently nuzzling the soft skin of his throat.
He giggled again, “You never told me you could sing like that.”
The sound Yokozawa made sounded more like a moan than the groan he had intended to release. “I don’t have to tell you everything.” He paused for a second. “You would get bored.”
Kirishima laid kisses all the way to Yokozawa’s mouth, giving the latter a pleasing shiver, before joining their foreheads softly. “With you? Never.”
Yokozawa was aware that his expression was probably disgustingly sweet at the moment but, with the deemed light of the street lamp and Kirishima’s scent all around him, he could not care less.
“Come on, let’s go home!” Kirishima exclaimed, then he leant to whisper in his lover’s ear, “There are other sounds I want to get from you tonight.”
Yokozawa was drunk and definitely in the mood, but it did not mean Kirishima could do everything he pleased and he quickly pushed him away and got back on the main street, Kirishima’s laugh following him.
Yokozawa stiffened when he felt fingers caressing his palm and intertwining with his but he did not say anything nor tried to get his hand free. He must have been more drunk than he thought.
“I hope you’ll let me hear you sing again, your voice was really sexy back there!”
Yokozawa blushed again but a warm feeling in his chest made him simply squeeze his partner’s hand as they walked along.
His voice was almost soft when he told Kirishima to go die.
~The end~
Shorter than the first one but it was meant to be this way. All Hail Cammie for her beta-reading, ily!!
OPALESCENCE
On a South Pacific Island, a group of five "archaeologists" were exploring a large, underground cavern, much to the chagrin of the locals.
They were warned of a deadly curse that would bring great pain and suffering; in their native tongue, they called it "Barugon". No one - especially any outsider - was allowed in the Valley of the Rainbows. And that's exactly where this cave was. And, as is the rhetoric of many cautionary tales, no one ever should have set foot there.
The team thought maybe the curse the natives spoke of was a warning about the extremely toxic scorpions that resided there, whose venom could kill in agonizing minutes. Or maybe there were discarded munitions littered about when the island saw action during World War II. Or maybe it was all hullabaloo to deter treasure hunters from plundering any riches stored there.
The head of the expedition, a Japanese man known only as Onodera, knew the scorpions were no joke. And given he was stationed here during the war, he was certainly cautious of any hazards that may have been left behind. But most assuredly, he knew there was treasure here - an opal, bigger than his fist. He had gotten separated from his unit when a nasty storm had struck and happened upon the cave, where he had found the opal. Stranded for a couple days, he had time to think, seeing it best to leave the gem behind, for he would not risk it being confiscated...or possible have equally greedy eyes compete for its possession. So he placed it in a small box and buried it in a spot that he would find upon his return, should he gather the proper funding.
And sure enough, there was the box containing the opal, right where he had left it.
After the team was dazzled by its vibrancy, Onodera had it snugly placed into a sturdier container. Taking hold of it, he bolted out of the chamber. That is when the explosives he had smuggled with him and planted when no one was looking detonated. The less number of people to return, the less the money the rock could fetch would be divided.
As he confined himself to his bunk on the ship, Onodera eyed his prize. He was somewhat perplexed by how unusually cold the opal felt. He shone a UV lamp onto it, and the gem glowed a dazzling iridescence, almost as if it were being brought to life! This little tidbit might sway the investor to pay even more, he thought.
The sound of approaching footsteps startled him, so he slipped the opal under a blanket. It was only a crew mate on his break, hoping for an extra hand in Mahjong before the ship reached port in Kobe. A bit reluctant at first, Onodera felt he could use a little bit of fun. After all, he was about to be set for life, so what does he have to worry for?
However, he had forgotten to turn off the UV lamp. Even from under the blanket, the opal glowed...then began to burn through the fabric...then crack apart...
The ship had barely been docked when a sudden explosion engulfed it. Then it was...covered in ice...?
Of those who made it off the ship, Onodera was one of them. He so happened to meet with his investor, who was in no mood to pay for merchandise that wasn't present. Before he could explain how he had left the opal on the ship, something stirred in the harbor, moving toward shore. From the churning tide arose a gigantic chameleon-like creature. Smashing the dockside warehouses and refueling tanks for ships, the ensuing fires dazzled the scales of the creature. Try as he must, Onodera could not deny the monster's scales looked a lot like the iridescent shimmer of the opal.
That was the last thought the cross his mind as the beast's foot trampled him and buried him in the rubble.
As Barugon advanced toward Osaka, exhaling a mist that froze all it touched, the JSDF was doing all they could to repel the beast. Close range attacks could do little against the sub-zero vapors. Having enough of the irritating shells pelting it, the monsters spines began to glow, then a rainbow-like beam poured from its back, burning, melting, and disintegrating all it touched.
It was then that a strange swirl appeared, streaking across the sky...then descended toward the creature. It was GAMERA! Barugon fired its beam again, but it had no effect on the giant turtle's sleek carapace. Barugon lashed its tongue out, grabbing Gamera by the arm and pulled him in. Gamera winced as the monster bit down. He wrestled the chameleon loose, then retaliated by blasting a powerful fireball from his mouth! Striking hard, Barugon shrieked in pain as the blast had left a laceration on its side.
Barugon angrily puffed up and belched its icy vapor. Gamera held up his arm to block it, but there wasn't much he could do. The ice that gathered on him began to render him immobile. With one final gust, Barugon froze Gamera where he stood.
Osaka lay ominously quiet in its spontaneous winter, as Barugon scuttled to the outskirts of the city to allow its wound to heal. Rain had begun to fall, and it was noted the monster seemed to be in agony, scrambling for any cover it could find before furiously digging out a small den in a hillside.
Scientists who had hoped to collect samples of Barugon's blood were astonished to discover a possible ace up the sleeve. This was why it was agitated by the rain - direct contact with fresh water caused the blood to turn corrosive! If it could bore a few feet into solid pavement, imagine what the cocktail was doing to the creature's insides. It was also noted that some buildings struck by the rainbow beam, particularly ones with large, shiny windows, seemingly had little or no damage. The hunch was confirmed when vehicles, found burned to a crisp, were left with their rearview mirrors unscathed. The beam could be reflected!
As tiresome as it was, a series of large mirrors were erected during the downpour. The timing of its completion couldn't be better, for as soon as the storm exhausted its last drops, Barugon emerged, its wound healed.
Crawling into the designated target area, the JSDF fired upon it in hopes of goading the lizard into shining its rainbow at the mirrors. The plan was working - the beam struck and bounced right back into Barugon. The creatures shiny scales were stained with its blood, already beginning its volatile reaction as firetrucks doused the monster in water. Furiously, its tail uncoiled and swatted away the trucks. Despite its agonizing howls, it was not mortally wounded. It was a much wiser creature, unfortunately, as it had no intention of using its rainbow beam again. All anyone could do was watch in despair as Barugon trundled away, unopposed.
Meanwhile, Gamera, thought to have been frozen to death, stirred to life! Breaking the ice that gathered across his body, he retracted his hind legs, fired his thrusters and took off, heading toward Barugon. When he got there, he immediately pulled in his arms and head, ramming forcefully into Barugon, flinging it to a nearby lake. Barugon knew how deadly the body of water would be with its open wounds.
Gamera landed in front to impede its escape. Once again, Barugon unleashed its tongue and snared him by the neck this time, yanking him to the ground on all fours. Though slightly fazed, and with Barugon's tongue still gripping him, Gamera took hold of the tongue with his hand and began to pull...towards the lake.
Barugon was filled with panic. With a hesitant but sharp bite, its teeth sliced into the elastic flesh of its tongue, severing it. Both monsters reeled in opposite directions. Barugon tried to shake off its pain, but before it could do anything, Gamera's head lunged out, his jaws clamping down on Barugon's neck.
Barugon tried clawing at him, but Gamera's thick scutes wouldn't allow any kind of devastating strike. It tried to freeze him with its breath, but it was unable to point itself at him. It tried to grab anything with its unfurled tail, but nothing was strong enough for it to anchor itself. Barugon could only flail, but it was futile. True to his turtle-like form, Gamera was not letting go. Finally, both monsters submerged beneath the lake.
Barugon's blood seemingly boiled the water as the creature began to dissolve. After a long silence, the lake suddenly caught fire in an opalescent array of color, as the cocktail of Barugon's hydrated blood ignited. Gamera rose up and gradually began nourishing himself on the flames, down to the last spark. With Barugon vanquished, Gamera looked toward the spectating defense force...but none felt he had any intention to attack. With a roar of triumph, he tucked himself into his shell and spun away into the sky.
Did Gamera only fight Barugon the way a predator seeks prey? Animals disputing territory? Or could it be...
As time passed, word had reached the village in the South Pacific that Barugon was destroyed by Gamera. The people no longer lived in fear of the curse, knowing that if another should appear, Gamera would be there to stop it. The sole survivor of Onodera's betrayal chose to live out the rest of his days on that island, to start his life anew. While his curiosity did pull at him once in a while, the more he realized the Valley was not for humans to capitalize. Who knows what other "curses" could be out there, waiting to be unleashed by someone's greed?
He couldn't answer that definitively, but any fears over such things he had were quashed, ever since he came into possession of that comma-shaped bead out there in the Valley of the Rainbows.
Therapy Game Restart Discussion: Who is Onodera?
Hello everyone! Hope you are all well~ ❤️💛💜 I've had a headscratcher of an ask/message regarding Onodera, so I figured I'll make it into one big post!
Before I begin this Q&A/discussion post (feel free to comment below if you have any thoughts), I have looked through past chapters to gather the information I will put into this post to support my predictions. Not all chapters are readily available for everyone at the moment as only one volume of TGR is out right now, so I shall put the chapter numbers for your future reference! ⚠️ Also, just a note! These opinions are my personal thoughts, conjectures, and opinions, so please don't think I am saying one idea or speculation is wrong--this is just how I see it, and of course I could very well be wrong! And I also am not fluent in Japanese, so I may have some translation errors!
⚠️ Also, a warning, this will be a long post! Keep reading if you're interested and please let me know your own thoughts!
First, in an earlier ask, I was directed to a translation group that said Onodera is a man. With the help of Google and Google Translate (because I don't understand/speak Spanish), I found that post (dated April this year) and the origin of the picture they used in that post. The image is from Hinohara-sensei's 13th August 2020 tweet here and is also below for reference:
Tumblr media
Now, all I can remember from first seeing that image is "Woow, so pretty! A female character? A love rival? A threat? OH it's the infamous director they're all talking about???"
This image was released around the time chapter 8 was released, i.e. the first chapter we see Onodera in full.
Looking at the image again, I can see how Onodera could be seen as a female or a male. Onodera has long hair, yet no visible breasts. There is no evidence of an Adam's apple, but that could just be because of the turtleneck as part of their outfit. Furthermore, in chapter 13, we see a view of Onodera from behind. There are no "womanly curves" visible in this view of Onodera.
After searching some Japanese blogs, some fans also had the same thoughts: no breasts = possible male, the shape of the face etc. Here are the blogs I found: [1] [2] [3] but most of these are from around chapter 8.
Just about the breast argument: there are a lot of different shapes for breasts. I learnt that when working at a department store selling bras during university. It is possible that Onodera is really flat chested or just has very little breast tissue. Not sure if that's getting too technical now, ahah, but what I want to say is that the lack of breasts isn't a definite yes to Onodera being a man.
Hinohara-sensei also has not explicitly stated throughout TGR so far (ch1-13) that Onodera is male or female.
From chapters 8-12, Onodera is always referred to as 院長 (director) by Shizuma and the nurses at the clinic. No gender-specific pronouns have been used in the story nor by any characters to refer to Onodera when speaking so far (that I have read). So confirming Onodera's gender is just misleading at the present moment.
We do find out in chapter 9 that Onodera's first name is 昌 akira. Akira is a gender neutral name in Japan. It is often given to males, but it is not uncommon for females to have this name. Which, I think, is genius on Sensei's part. It leaves us all thinking!
Q: So Amaya-chwan, what do you think Onodera's gender is?
Just for me as I've been reading TGR the past 1.5 years, I see Onodera as a woman as I have been "encouraged" to see Onodera as one by the little subtleties in the story, and Minato sees Onodera as a female, so I probably am viewing Onodera in Minato's POV.
(Please keep reading on for more insights and answers to questions! Really, this post is long! 😅)
In chapter 9, Onodera's older brother, who is also Shizuma's university professor (and his last name is not Onodera), makes small talk with Shizuma regarding the staff at his placement:
Tumblr media
Shizuma's professor says: By the way, Shizuma-kun, how've you been!? You haven't been bullied, have you!? // The female team here is scary, right~ You know, Nakajou-kun and I were in the same grade...
So here, I'm made to think Onodera's clinic is pretty much all female, including Onodera too.
Fun fact: His professor uses the suffix -kun for Nakajou-sensei, yet Nakajou-sensei is a female and -kun is commonly used for males these days. But, it is also used for females in very specific situations. I'm not too sure what the situations are, but I have heard them used for females before.
In the same chapter (9), while Shizuma is changing out of his scrubs in the men's locker (?) room, Onodera walks in. He is slightly flustered, and kindly reminds her that she's walked into the men's locker room. Her reaction is "Huh? Ahh..." So here, again, I am made to believe Onodera is female.
While no gender-specific pronouns have been used to address Onodera, Minato and Itsuki have referred to Onodera as a female in chapter 13.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The kanji for "female/woman" is 女. In these two images, Minato refers to Onodera as 上司の女 female superior, and from Minato's story, Itsuki hence calls her 職場の女の人 female from (Shizuma's) workplace. This is the only time Onodera has been referred to as a female.
⚠️ Just a note going forward in this discussion, I will now call Onodera "she/her" as that is what I believe Onodera's gender is at the present moment!
Now, I did get a second ask from an Anon! Here they are below with my responses:
This one is about what's behind Onodera. I think she's a pretty interesting character. I actually think she's a trans woman or a non-binary trans woman. Sensei has been dropping so many hints to that... The name her brother calls her might be her dead name. He complains about her hair and what their father would say. She's designed to have flat breasts, perhaps she's not under hormone therapy, perhaps her "trips" and "days off" have something to do with reassignment surgeries...
She most definitely is an interesting character. I wouldn't say Onodera being transgender is out of the realm of possibility because the story is still ongoing. But regarding her name, I don't know if I'd call it a dead name since it is gender neutral already. Perhaps the kanji for a male Akira name would be different to a female one though?
About the hair comment (ch10), I just thought it was unruly? I honestly didn't think too much of it! What I will add is that the kanji for hair (髪) is used, but the reading is あたま head. Not sure why just yet, so I'll just leave that here as some extra information for the moment.
Not sure what I really think about a) her flat-chestedness and b) her insanely long business trips yet! I figured a) might be a character design, and b) she really is a top-notch veterinarian so she's probably in high demand. But I could be completely off the mark!
Also, I don't know where to add this random bit in from the story, but in chapter 12, we find out that Onodera has been calling one of the staff the wrong name for more than 10 years now. Not sure if this new piece of info affects anything?
But again, that is a very interesting prediction/thought you have about Onodera, and I wouldn't say it's not possible!
She's kind of a female Minato, psychologicallly and in appearance, which brings some challenges. And one more thing that I think hints to that: "I'll make it so your body can never be satisfied by any woman", Minato says to Shizuma. As the last chapter leaves it at that, we don't know exactly what he is talking about. [spoiler?] I haven't seen the Japanese text yet to be sure if he's clear about topping Shizuma.
That was exactly my thought when she was first introduced! That's part of the reason why I think Minato sees her as a threat, especially when he saw her for the first time and was told she is a 美人beautiful person (both in chapter 12). She and Minato definitely share some characteristics, but I find she's a bit more socially-awkward than Minato given her background (Chapter 9 & 10).
For the dialogue, the Japanese lines and the most literal translations I can give are:
今から 静真くんを抱く From now, (I'll) hold/embrace you, Shizuma-kun.
どんな女に出会っても 絶対満足できない体にしてあげる No matter the women you encounter, I will make it so your body definitely cannot be satisfied (by any of them).
Hopefully we'll find out what Minato means by that exactly in the next chapter, which I hope comes to me this week!
But if that's what he's talking about, it's 1. poor Minato being transphobic (besides being biphobic towards his own boyfriend)* 2. poor Minato probably foreshadowing his own fall. If Onodera happens to be a woman with a d**k, she can do whatever Minato thinks a cis man only can do. That's not what will make Shizuma stay by his side. Shizuma will stay by his side because he loves Minato. And that's that. Debunks biphobic myths, debunks transphobic myths. *He's not a bad person, he's got issues
Okay, this is probably as straight-forward as I can say this, but I just want to say that I don't know enough about the issues faced by the LGBTQI+ community. My friends have kindly answered all my questions so far as I don't want to be ignorant or rude when learning more about my friends and the community. I don't want to give off the air that I'm assuming anything since I don't want any misunderstandings. And I am fully aware that I need to educate myself more regarding this!
So about Minato, I'm not completely sure what you mean by number 2. But he definitely has his share of trauma, insecurities, and fears regarding his relationship with Shizuma. Having Onodera as a threat in this story really helps drive Minato's growth. The story is titled Therapy Game Restart, so what I gather from the title is that Minato is going to face another fear/insecurity he has, something deeply-rooted in him, and it's going to get really heavy and complicated, but he will eventually get through it and it will help him heal and grow as a character, and hopefully strengthen his faith in his relationship with Shizuma.
So far, I believe this "fear" is carrying on from +Play More, that Shizuma can be whisked away by a female at any moment.
But yes, Minato has to realise for himself that his and Shizuma's love, relationship, and bond is strong enough for him to not worry about Shizuma leaving him so abruptly. He has to learn to trust in Shizuma more, and TGR is slowly revealing that, especially in chapter 13.
I'll stop here. I have already written long analyses on this series and I think about making them public at some point. But it would be nice to hear from you! Maybe I'm completely wrong in my interpretations! I'm really sorry for being so annoying and maybe using inappropriate language. I really didn't mean to bother you. But I never see anyone making these points. I just want to know if I'm thinking unreasonably...
I love reading different analyses, opinions, story predictions, the whole lot!! So please feel free to ask me or post your own ideas. It's always a welcome thing for me to discuss stories and learn new things! Don't be sorry that you're being a bother or annoying, because it's not a bother at all!
We're all allowed to have our own ideas and opinions about stories, and these ideas will change once something is canon in the story, and ultimately is something we will have to accept too.
So yeah, just my two cents. Thank you for being so patient with my response, dear Anon!
To anyone reading at this point, thank you for reading this far! ❤️💛💜
I shall see you in our next set of takeaways~ As always, stay safe and take care of yourselves and your loved ones! 💜
(2021-05-17: Speedy proofreading is done ahah! And yes, my brain is still so full of 山河令/Word of Honor right now, so I have been VERY distracted! Highly recommend this drama, guys! It's up for free on the official Youku Youtube page! Totally not an endorsement, but I love this drama! AHHHHH!! Gong Jun [Simon] be living on my mind rent free~)
Let me summarize the Photography Ot4 of Kamen Rider Decade
Kadoya Tsukasa: A Tsundere. that's it.
No really, he's someone who's not honest with his feelings but is "technically" honest with others' feelings. Despite his amnesiac status, he has a very good read of a situation and the feelings and emotions associated with it.
The only time he's oblivious was when he recovered his memories that temporarily overwrote whatever he learned from the journey he started with Natsumi and her grandfather. (HC, Granpa Hikari isn't a bad guy, rather his actions were dictated by the gaia memory he had)
What I'm still struggling to see is if he'd help someone immediately as soon as he sees someone in trouble.
Let's have a scenario, Tadashi Hamada from Big Hero 6 died in a school fire. Suppose his dimensional curtain took him there, would he save Tadashi from the fire or let Tadashi save himself?
But what I know for sure is that Kadoya will save a lot of people from destruction even if it cost him his life.
Natsumi: The Empath
Natsumi has a good read on everyone's emotions, even if she's a bit naive in a lot of things. (The hard-boiled way was to kill Kadoya when she's been repeatedly warned by Narutaki that Kadoya would destroy everything.)
Despite Natsumi's naivete, she's also objective-oriented in the sense that she can make everyone do the tasks assigned to them, and can quell any and all potential murmurs and complaints.
Yusuke: Assurance
I see Yusuke as someone who needs that assurance that he's doing good and Yashiro did that for him before Kadoya came into the picture. I see him as a meeker version of Banjou of Build, at least until Kadoya comes into the picture.
After Kadoya, who he later believes to believe in him, he tries to match that belief with self-confidence into doing what's right, which net him a lot of good results.
Yusuke's faith in Kadoya waivered at times, but he always came through in the end.
It doesn't help that he's been out of the loop during the times when he and Kadoya were at odds with each other.
Kadoya Tsukasa is one of the people who believe in Onodera Yusuke the most, and he, in turn, believes in Kadoya.
Kaito Daiki: Oblivious
There's nothing else to describe Kaito but oblivious. We can blame that on his upbringing but the way he's able to misinterpret what kind of treasure Kadoya was referring to when it was all about friendship.
You could say Kaito is the Philip/Raito Sonozaki of the crew. I wouldn't say Chase 000 because he does understand his feelings whereas Chase was clueless most of the time.
I say Philip because Philip is all about logic and information. Compared to Kadoya's, Natsumi's, and Yusuke's feeling and emotion-oriented judgment.
----
Did I get their characters right???
Tsukasa: yeah pretty spot on, though he says it himself that he can’t empathize with others. So he relies on others. Specifically Yuusuke. He’d try to save a person in front of him if he Can, I’d say.
Natsumi: new way of looking at it but not factually untrue.
Yuusuke: post-Kuuga, Yuusuke needs no assurance. What he needed was a push. Tsukasa keeps needing pushes, because he’s kind of a disaster. The only time Yuusuke’s faith ever waivered was the Rider War, and he had every bit of info as the real Legend Riders. The only thing he didn’t know what Tsukasa was faking evil, something Only Daiki figured out.
Daiki: he knows exactly what Tsukasa is referring to, after the first time, which was a fair mistake when last time he met Tsukasa, Tsukasa was evil. Daiki may act like he doesn’t know, but look at his backstory. He claims to be logical but he’s not. He’s run by his emotion, and, in particular, his need/love/obsession for Tsukasa
Blood Crown Tournament Night 2 (Match 2)
Texas Brutus vs Yoshi Onodera
Tumblr media
In my opinion, this match involved two men who haven't really proven themselves yet. Not that they didn't have good performances in round one, but Texas Brutus got by due to an unfortunate opponent injury that cut the match short before it gained and real momentum, and Yoshi Onodera looked better in his match but was arguably shown up by KEN in their match despite him getting the (fairly questionable) victory. This was a chance for both men to really cement a place in this tournament, to become a semi-finalist instead of a footnote. It was time to see how they both would fare.
This match was not what I expected! From Yoshi's perspective, I expected more strikes in this contest, for sure. He's shown that his strikes are solid, but he opted to focus his offense more on ground work and grappling. A bold choice against Texas Brutus, whose specialty is clearly grappling. Texas Brutus in the first round showed some great ground-based offense in his match against Chisato and I figured he would return to that well but in this bout he was outright explosive. Something must have lit a fire under this man because he was throwing Onodera around like a damn rag doll for a significant portion of this match and it absolutely ruled. I was pleased with this, both men showing they have a few more wrinkles to show the crowd, which for me, makes me want to see them both more. Yoshi's grounded punches are starting to become a notable piece of his offense, as he started pulling that out and firmly took the match in his favor, leaving Brutus with no room to recover and eventually losing the match as Yoshi rained fists down on him, getting the victory via ref stoppage.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yoshi Onodera holds up two of his fingers with a smirk on his face
Yoshi Onodera: That makes two. Though, lets be honest, nobody expected Brutus to win. He was supposed to be a guy that does cool moves to get some oohs and aahs from the crowd and he did that perfectly. He was a good little worker, but he's not a chief. He's not the leader of this generation. I'm the posterchild of this generation. The peak of fighting ability. I just had to put a guy in his place so he, and all of you, know exactly where that place is. He's a good grappler, but he doesn't have a chance at out-grappling me ever. Nothing wrong with that. Most people in history don't get to be the kind of fighter I am. Stay in your place behind me, Brutus. Business is about to be booming when I win this tournament, so be a good worker and take the payday. I'll take the crown.
This is something I recently started thinking about but could Takano and Ritsu already be together in the Junjou Romantica universe? Sometimes I feel like it doesn’t completely add up but hear me out, in Sekaiichi it hasn’t even been a full year since Ritsu joined Emerald, but in Romantica it’s been about 4 years of Misaki being with Usagi, and that means it’s been over 4 years since Ritsu stopped being Usagi’s editor, if Ritsu was 22 when he was Usagi’s editor then everything would add up with him currently being 26 now, however would it make sense if Ritsu quit being his editor at 22 and stayed working at Onodera publishing until he was 25 which is the age he started working at Emerald. So I’m just trying to figure out where exactly the timeline for each manga is, is Sekaiichi further ahead or further back? We know that Misaki is still working as an assistant in Sekaiichi because when Onodera mentions that the ones who tally the monthly polls are the part-timers well, it’s Misaki, Misaki is the part timer in Ritsu’s mental image. (Chapter 12 of Sekaiichi for this image which is still pretty early on in the countdown)
Tumblr media
Time in Romantica obviously passes by differently since there’s no countdown, so I believe it could be possible that in the Romantica universe the Christmas season that they just passed would have been the one where Ritsu spent time with Takano for his birthday for their second time. So the countdown would have already ended and they should already be together! And now I’m just mind blown about this realization.
My Review of Japan Sinks 2020
Contains spoilers!
So the other night I watched Japan Sinks 2020. And then I watched it again immediately the next day to pay attention to smaller details. And now I’m writing a review because overall I found it really good but also some parts confused me and I feel like the show could have done a better job at.
Anyway, this is not going to be a clear review as I am a big idiot and do not know how to compose my thoughts whoops- as well as this is solely opinion as I am in no way an actual film critic and acknowledge that ppl have different thoughts and opinions on things- anyway, this is long so I’m putting it below a cut!
This is somewhat chronological and some of the things I saw weren’t addressed may have been I just have a small peanut brain and don’t remember it rip
First off, I liked how serious the first earthquakes were. Like, they didn’t hold back and I appreciated that. What I didn’t get as much was how the parents reappeared? Like the mom was in a river with a tsunami approaching literally in view while the dad was flung unconscious onto a truck/train(? I don’t remember) and then suddenly they were both on the top of the mountain?
Ayumu I feel was a very interesting character as she was a bit sassy and doesn’t do much but honestly she’s a 14 year old injured girl who loses her parents fairly quickly and I can get why she’d be emotionally unstable during these times.
I feel like many of the characters could have been flushed out more/given a better backstory. The main family was good- We got a lot of flashbacks/stories and stuff but literally everyone else (except KITE) were a complete mystery. Nanami and Haruo I understand are family friends but I feel like we didn’t know anything past that? Like Haruo used to be famous for sprinting but then he stopped? Why? Also he carries around records? Why???? And Nanami? She was just a family friend? I honestly thought she was in high school or college or something but no, she’s apparently 26?? Anyway, she deserved better. Also I have no idea what the heck was going down between her and Haruo. Honestly, when I first watched it for the first few episodes I thought they were siblings until KITE’s appearance.
The dad’s death was great. I think it was really impactful killing him off right away. Straight to the point. I do find it funny that he died the moment they found the signs but I guess that makes it dramatic. They seemed overall though mostly unaffected by his death (except for ayumu) and that was kind of strange?
Also, can we take a moment to appreciate Nanami and Mari absolutely beating the shit out of the gas station guy? We love that. But then the guy’s glasses perfectly fit Haruo’s vision? Were they not prescription or did they get really lucky?
And of course, the rave music playing during Nanami’s death I think added a lot lol And KITE’s appearance. The moment KITE appeared I knew exactly who was gonna survive: Him, Ayumu, Go, and maybe Haruo if the creators were feeling generous,,,uh,,,spoiler,,,they weren’t :( KITE’s my favorite. Kite is also my and one of my favorite ygo character’s name so bonus points for that.
The whole cult arc was so strange to me. Part of the appeal of Japan 2020 to me was the whole human vs nature aspect as humans literally have no control over nature but then unexplainable magic was brought in and that instantly made everything more unrealistic thus less intense in a way? Also Daniel’s entire character confused me. He was a magician or something? But how did he know of the cult city? And why did he want to go there so badly? Like??? Also the old man! Who was he? Why was he addicted to morphine? Why/how did he know about the child and why was he so determined to kidnap him? Why was Mr. Onodera there???? Why was he injured??
The sex scene seemed so out of place and extra but whatever,
Everyone being like, hey this food is strange and KITE being like “yea that’s the drugs!” and then Haruo being like, “I like it. Reminds me of my mom’s cooking. Btw, she was crushed and I watched her die” had me rolling like,, that’s too many different emotions to expose to me at once
((Also, when the child finally spoke before being yeeted into the afterworld I actually found how abrupt it was to be quite funny which I don’t think it was supposed to be oops))
Overall I feel like the whole cult arc added really nothing that couldn’t have been added in a less bizarre way? Like right from when the old man appears to when they escape the city what happened? They gain Daniel and the old man’s company but then both of them die so net gain is zero right? I guess KITE and Haruo bond and Mari and Ayumu do too but I don’t know. it seemed kind of out of it to me- oh! Wait! They gained an entire Mr. Onodera so I guess that’s what they got out of it but it never really was explained how or why he was there so I guess in the end it still doesn’t really make sense?
Ok, the whole boat scene was good. I liked it. I liked how you got to see Ayumu’s leg deteriorating and I kind of sensed it was going to have to be amputated when it was her mom(?) who told her to never stop track and field.
I’m a bit salty that we never actually got to see Japan sink and instead it was just like, oh wow, see this wreck, haha plot twist it’s actually the top of a sky scrapper, yea, Japan’s underwater now! The old man’s appearance and death was kind of creepy but the shark cameo was cool. I like sharks.
The whole scene of Go and Ayumu in the life boat was absolutely beautiful to me. I love how they both encouraged each other to win and their friendly sibling banter and how determined they were to stay together and idk maybe it’s because too, have siblings and don’t want to die, but I just found overall really touching.
Anyway, then the mom dies. I don’t get really why she died because I feel like with all the rubbish floating around they have been able to find a type of lighter or knife to cut through the rope but I guess not? Also, did she die from drowning or because of her heart complications? Was she already close to dying because of her heart complications and that’s why she decided to sacrifice herself? Who knows. Not I.
I really liked Haruo’s character development from being quite and outcast to actually joining in and being helpful and volunteering.
Annnd, then KITE shows up with an entire tank??? Where did he get the tank?????? No matter, I’m just glad to see my boy again.
The rap battle was cute and all but v out of place for the type of series but you know it was started by KITE and I’ve learned not to doubt what he does so we’ll look past it.
The polaroid camera was a sign of death. Every time they’d take a picture someone would die.
The whole KITE and Onodera in his layer thing was neat. I don’t get why it was in a cave but stranger things have happened. KITE’s cool and I love him with my entire being.
I really liked the small detail of Haruo reaching out to KITE while he’s desperately trying to revive Onodera. It just seemed touching considering what Haruo’s been through (losing his parents, and then losing Mari after trying to revive her)
I can’t believe KITE punched an old man back to life. What a legend.
Haruo’s death hit me the hardest. Especially since I feel like he’s grown the most. I’m so glad that he was able to be happy again though. His smile when running aaaaa. I feel like the wave that took him away wasn’t that bad and honestly he probably had a good chance of surviving it but maybe not, he was healing too so maybe that also prevent him from swimming well. KITE’s reaction to his death was extremely powerful as inferring from what KITE said before Haruo’s death would be KITE’s real first failure :’(
KITE in the next scene was v cool but also kind of extra, like why didn’t he just tell the kids, ‘hey I’m gonna signal for help, stay here with my phone and wait’ He gave me big Nagito vibes as he constantly talked abt his luck. Ultimate Lucky Student: KITE. But anyway, it was pretty cool. He was willing to sacrifice everything for these kids and I love that.
OH! ALSO! I personally loved all the ugly faces/expressions they animated. Especially during emotional scenes. Like, when Haruo cries after explaining his mom’s death or when Ayumu found the old man’s half eaten corpse in the life boat. When KITE is freezing and struggling on his balloon I love how ugly and detailed the animation is because I think his struggle was not supposed to be portrayed as a pretty thing and I think the realistic look to it added a lot to how horrifying and scary it would have been.
The ending was pretty good. Ayumu had to get her leg amputated which I predicted. All the characters I though who’d survive did.
Go became pro gamer and had his mom’s ring as a piercing which is like when she said his medical staples looked like piercings and that made my heart hurt a bit.
OH!
KITE! PLAYS! HARUO’S! SONG! The one record of Haruo’s that KITE stole and played at the cult rave he plays when Ayumu does her jump!! Which means that KITE kept it and repaired it and u can see he repaired it with gold Kintsugi style like they saw back at the cult area and idk that was just kind of touching to me and because I do feel like Haruo and KITE became closer after the cult arc.
ALSO!!! TRANS KITE!!! WE love positive trans representation and characters who’s personality don’t revolve around the fact that they’re trans!
Anyway, final thought? I liked the characters, the themes of man vs nature. The ending was nice and sweet. There were good scenes and good character development. There were a fair amount of plot holes/unexplained events and the whole cult arc brought unexplainable magic in it which I feel made the whole movie suddenly less impactful. The music, especially nanami’s death rave, sometimes felt out of place but other than that I really liked it. I’d rate it probably a 7/10. Yup. Definitely would (well, already have whoops) watch it again
Day 5: Roleswap/Formal
This @takaritsuweek prompt inspired me to do something I've been putting off for years: a rewrite of my fic Stalker-Senpai. So, please enjoy the first chapter :D its pretty much the same except third person now lol, we'll see how much I change in the future!
***
It was such a stupid reason to fall in love with someone.
Onodera Ritsu had been struggling to reach a high up book on a shelf, wobbling slightly on his tiptoes for a few brief moments before Saga Masamune decided to intervene, mostly just because something about watching the underclassman struggle was both sad and annoying. The older teen grabbed the book for Ritsu, handing it over with a blank expression.
Ritsu returned the simple, polite gesture with such a wide and sincere smile that Masamune's heart reached incredible speeds that he didn't know were possible. Why is he looking at me like that? Masamune wondered, shifting from one foot to the other, feeling warm from Ritsu's gaze.
Masamune swallowed hard as Ritsu took the book out of his hands and said an enthusiastic thank you, one that was way too cheerful considering all Masamune had done was reach up and grab something. The older boy couldn't help but to notice Ritsu's cheeks were a little red from what he assumed was embarrassment and Masamune suddenly wished to see that adorable expression every day.
God, what am I thinking? Adorable? He's a guy, Masamune hoped none of his thoughts were showing on his face. Apparently they weren't since Ritsu gave a quick and polite nod before scampering off. Masamune found his eyes following the underclassman and his feet almost followed as well. Almost. But Masamune somehow managed to hold on to a string of self control.
All he did was smile and say thank you, why am I acting like such an idiot? I don't even know his name, Masamune silently scolded himself. It was too late, though. Masamune was already on his way to become a hopeless, lovelorn fool.
It didn't take long for Masamune to notice that Ritsu was in the library as often as he was after their minuscule interaction. It was like Ritsu had suddenly appeared and was now here everyday. Not that Masamune was complaining; he found the underclassman's constant presence very comforting.
He reads a new book almost every day. Either he has a short attention span or a lot of time on his hands, Masamune noted. It was quite difficult to keep up with Ritsu's appetite for literature, though Masamune did his best. I want to read all the books that he reads, Masamune thought as he grabbed a novel Ritsu had recently finished. The older teen was hoping that he could use this as a way to get to know Ritsu better. Masamune was particularly ecstatic to learn from his book-stalking that his Kouhai's name was Onodera Ritsu.
The two of them always sat at different tables, but Masamune made sure to keep Ritsu in his sights. Masamune loved seeing the brunette's reactions to what he was reading. At times Masamune would hear a small chuckle leave Ritsu or see Ritsu purse his lips in thought or even see Ritsu rub at his eyes insistently to hide the fact that he was tearing up. I want to know what he's reading, Masamune would think desperately before he was able to get his hands on the book, I want to know what makes him smile and laugh, I want to be the one who makes him smile and laugh. Masamune felt positively pathetic with this train of thought, but he couldn't help himself.
Yes, it was official: Saga Masamune was in love at fifteen years old. He didn't understand how it happened so fast nor did he fully understand why, but he had enough self awareness to realize he was totally whipped for an underclassman who he hadn't even said a single word to.
That was precisely Masamune's problem; talking with people wasn't exactly his forte and he feared that he would somehow scare Ritsu off if he approached him. Not to mention, this feeling of want, this inexplicable desire to hold someone through the night and into the day, this need of seeing someone's face just to feel at ease, all of it was new to Masamune. It was scary to be so enraptured in someone. It was terrifying to know that someone else had so much power over him, power that Ritsu didn't even know he had. If Masamune confessed his feelings, he'd be freely handing that power over and Masamune didn't know if he was even capable of being vulnerable and trusting like that.
It didn't help that watching Ritsu from afar suddenly wasn't entertaining enough for the cruel deity laughing at Masamune's hopelessness. What other possible explanation was there for their paths crossing once again? He had peacefully watched Ritsu and stalked his library cards for three years, but now those days were seemingly over.
Masamune was reaching toward a book when a smaller, more delicate hand came into contact with his. Masamune looked over, his breath catching in his throat at the sight of Ritsu. Ritsu was quick to rip his hand away and met Masamune's eyes with an anxious gaze. Ritsu opened his mouth, looking like he was about to apologize for nothing.
"You can take the book, Onodera." Masamune said quickly before he could speak, not enjoying the sight of Ritsu appearing so guilty and worried. He wanted to alleviate the anxieties clear on Ritsu's face, but he seemed to only make it worse.
"How do you know my name?" Came the quiet, nervous response. The book was quickly forgotten by them both. Masamune felt like he was short-circuiting as he wracked his brain for any possible excuse or lie, but his mouth started moving without his permission.
"I love you."
What?
What?
What the hell did I just say?!
There was a pause between the two of them, the air around Masamune feeling as if it were crushing his bones.
"...eh? Eh?!" Ritsu's face flushed a beautiful shade of red, but Masamune didn't have the time to admire it because he was desperately trying to think of a way to prevent Ritsu from sprinting away.
"What I meant to say was-well-would you want to go out with me sometime?" Masamune asked, watching Ritsu's surprised, flustered expression closely. The brunette shifted uncomfortably from foot to foot, as he opened and closed his mouth, grasping at straws for a response.
"Y-Y-You know I-I'm a guy r-right?" Ritsu finally settled on after a few seconds of awkward silence.
Masamune almost wanted to laugh. Out of all the things Ritsu could've said, that was what he decided on? Masamune's lips quirked up ever so slightly in amusement as he started to find it a little easier to breathe.
"Yeah, I'm aware." Masamune replied dryly. "Does it bother you that I'm a guy?" That had been one of the reasons Masamune had been so hesitant to approach. It was possible that Ritsu wasn't even into guys and now maybe the two of them didn't even have a chance of being friends.
"I-no! Not really? I don't-" Ritsu inched closer and closer to retreating, which simply wouldn't do.
"It's alright, Just take a breath, okay? You don't have to say yes." Masamune quickly assured him, though I really, really want him to say yes, Masamune hoped it didn't show.
"I-I don't even k-know your name..." Ritsu started, seeming to try to find some sort of excuse, perhaps wanting to spare Masamune's feelings instead of outright rejecting him. However, Masamune's heart was stubborn and dead set on Ritsu. He wouldn't be dissuaded easily and not knowing his name was an easy fix.
"It's Saga. Saga Masamune."
Ritsu nodded slowly, visibly swallowing as he wrung his hands, seeming to be carefully considering his next few words.
"O-O-Okay...I-I'll go out with you...Saga Senpai..."
-
When an upperclassman grabbed a book for Ritsu and handed it over he was grateful for a few seconds, but forgot about the interaction quickly. It had been nothing particularly special after all. If there was anything he did remember from the brief conversation-if one could even call it that-it was that he felt terribly embarrassed for being too short to reach a book. And then a certain name started to pop up everywhere...
Ritsu scanned the shelves for a new read, not looking for anything in particular, just something unfamiliar and fresh. He started to reach for one when a larger hand met his and he instinctively recoiled away from the touch as if it had burned him. He looked over to see an older student that was often slinking around the library, somehow always seeming to have a certain aura of sadness around him.
"You can take the book, Onodera." He told Ritsu quickly, his expression blank and unreadable.
"How do you know my name?" Ritsu asked hesitantly, though he already knew the answer. This is my stalker. Saga Masamune, Ritsu felt nervous now that he was face to face with him. Ritsu had been ignoring the behavior for the longest time, three years in fact, but now his stalker was right in front of him.
Ritsu often liked to reread books that he particularly connected with and it didn't take long for him to realize a certain name kept appearing and reappearing underneath his own.
Saga Masamune.
Ritsu didn't know anything about this 'Saga' person. He was far too shy to ever venture out to try to talk to many people, especially an upperclassman. He was still young and fresh enough to high school to think that upperclassmen were untouchable Gods. Though, after noticing the name he also noticed that a certain upperclassman was constantly in the library: the one that had helped Ritsu grab a book. Ritsu decided he was as good as a suspect as anyone to be his stalker. It wasn't like many other students spent hours upon hours in the school's library. To confirm his suspicion, Ritsu once quietly walked up to his table when he had fallen asleep sitting up and took the opportunity to look in the back of his book. There was his name: Saga Masamune. The upperclassman shifted and Ritsu took that as his que to quickly put the book back down and retreat.
Ritsu tried to ignore it, not understanding Masamune's motives or actions and wondering if perhaps he was looking a little too much into it. That was, until the two had bumped into each other again.
"I love you." Masamune said.
Ritsu's heart punched the inside of his rib cage before beating erratically in all directions. A confession had been about the last thing he was expecting.
"...eh? Eh?!" Is all Ritsu could choke out in response with his legs feeling weak yet also prepared to sprint a mile if necessary.
"What I meant to say was-well-would you want to go out with me sometime?" Masamune asked, but Ritsu's confusion didn't cease.
"Y-Y-You know I-I'm a guy r-right?" That question sounded much dumber out loud than it did in my head, Ritsu thought as he refrained from facepalming. Masamune smirked a bit at his question and Ritsu tried not to frown, feeling like he was being made fun of and this confession had perhaps been a joke of some sort to mess with him.
"Yeah, I'm aware. Does it bother you that I'm a guy?"
Ritsu struggled to swallow as he started to shake his head. "I-no! Not really? I don't-" He wanted to hide behind the bookshelves at this point and forget this entire conversation.
"It's alright, Just take a breath, okay? You don't have to say yes."
"I-I don't even k-know your name..." Ritsu lied, wanting to somehow escape this situation.
"It's Saga. Saga Masamune." He replied smoothly. The upperclassman obviously didn't see their lack of knowledge of one another as an issue and suddenly Ritsu was out of excuses.
I should say I don't like guys, or that not interested, or that I have a girlfriend, Ritsu thought, but instead he just gulped nervously and nodded slowly.
"O-O-Okay...I-I'll go out with you...Saga Senpai..."
Why did I say that, why did I agree to this, what am I going to do now, oh God, I bet this really is just a joke and he's going to start laughing at me now, if my parents find out about this I'm completely done for-, Ritsu's panicked thoughts continued to race, but stopped once a gentle hand reached up to ruffle his hair.
And that was how the wonderful, complicated mess of their relationship started.
JAPAN SINKS 2020 OH MY GODDDDDD
(MAJOR SPOILERS FOR NETFLIX ANIME JAPAN SINKS 2020)
First off just wanna say that I hope to all the gods out there that whatever happened in the show won’t happen this year? Please???
SECOND: IT WAS AN EMOTIONAL ROLLERCOASTER
Right off the first episode you can see how the disaster affects everybody. Ayumu literally saw her teammates get crushed to death. The father also had to experience that with his colleagues. The mother had to be in an airplane crash and Gō, I THOUGHT HE DIED.
And then from that point on you see the family join their 2 neighbours and go out to try to find a safe place to get help. Should be easy? NOPE
By the end of the season almost everyone dies whether they just joined the group or not, with the exception of Ayumu and Gō. First was the dad with the buried landmine, I knew something would happen. Then it was Nanami with the poisoned gas. Then Gō almost died, when Gramps shot him with the arrow. Daniel joins the group along with Gramps to go to Shan City but literally dies with Gramps when an earthquake strikes them. CAN WE TALK ABOUT THE 10 YEAR OLD KID I FORGOT HIS NAME BUT I WAS LIKE GREAT HES TALKING, BEAUTIFUL MOMENT FOR MOTHER AND FATHER- OH MY GOD NO HE GOT HIT IN THE HEAD BUY FALLING STONE. Then when they finally go to the port to go and get on the boat and WHOOPS ANOTHER EARTHQUAKE. So then the whole crew with the new fellow, a sailor, get separated. Not even after he dies and Ayumu has to see him getting eaten by the birds, good thing Gō didn’t see. Eventually Ayumu and Gō reunite with their mother and their other neighbour, Haruo (my god HIS VOICE) and find a motor boat. Oh no the anchor is stuck whos gonna get it unstuck? The mother with a device that prevents her from getting cardiac arrest who just happens to be a professional swimmer. Admin did she die? OF COURSE SHE DID WHAT ELSE DID YOU EXPECT. In all seriousness it was very sad, tears at the corner of my eyes. The three of them eventually meet up with Kite and Onodera. They follow coordinates to go and find information that can help everyone. Kite and especially Onodera almost die when the cave that kept the information got swallowed by water. Gō drops the card when another earthquake appears and when Haruo went to run and get it I KNEW- I KNEW HE COULDNT MAKE IT IN 10 SECONDS HIS FASTEST WAS 12. NO I DONT ACCEPT HIS DEATH BECAUSE I ACTUALLY DONT UNDERSTAND HOW HE COULD HAVE DIED SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN IT TO ME. Then, oh boy, I’m assuming that a lot of us thought that Kite died, I still don’t know if he actually died or is alive after the timeskip, but I thought he was being a bitch by leaving them but then realized he was helping them. Good part after that is that a helicopter found them because of the GPS signal, and Ayumu fainted because of her infected leg. She gets it amputated and Gō, precious boi, is okay. Timeskip happens and I realize that some of the dialogue/voiceover is some old family videos playing when the siblings see her mother’s photos. I also realize that THE LITTLE BOY THE MOTHER SAVED AT THE BEGINNING SAVED THE PHOTO AND READ THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY BY AYUMU- precious realization.
Also, just want to point out and question, was the reason why Ayumu wanted to go get her business done was because she was jealous of how close Nanami and Haruo were? Idk someone explain?
Another thing I’m questioning is how exactly Haruo died? I know that the current can be strong but I’m not entirely sure how he died. As well as Kite, did he die? Because you sort of see him when Ayumu is participating in her Olympics match.
In all seriousness the show captures the emotions someone would go through after everything. Ayumu thinks her mother doesn’t care that her father died because she’s keeping a happy face and is interacting with Daniel a lot when in reality we find out that she’s staying strong for the sake of Ayumu and Gō. The time where Ayumu was the only one able to board the giant ship because of how athletic she is but at the cost of leaving her family behind. I’m glad she got off or else Gō would have been in a lot of trouble. And then we find out that the mother has a device that keeps her alive and prevents her from having cardiac arrests. After that she finds out the she had to sacrifice herself to go and untangle the rope because she’s going to die one way or another, why not make use of her last moments and help her children and friend survive? Throughout the show you get to see more characters that you learn about come and go and the small emotional attachment you have is just soul crushing after you see them die. Imagine all the PTSD Ayumu and Gō have to live with because of all the things they experienced, as well as the other survivors. It’s really realistic to the point where it’s scary.
Can we just also appreciate how Ayumu and Gō have a realistic sister/brother relationship too? Beautiful.
I really do like the show because of the realistic aspect of the situation and how literally anything you do has a consequence no matter good or bad or big or small.
I would definitely recommend watching it if you don’t mind all the gore and realism of it all. Another thing to mention is that I realized how similar the art was to Devilman Crybaby (another anime I recommend) and come to find out that it is directed by the same person who did direct Devilman Crybaby, Masaaki Yuasa. He did a fantastic job in both animes.
asks last night made me think about female tertiary riders. since yua is one will this become a trend? no way to know. but then I was like “ok going back which previous characters would have worked just fine as women?” and I used the list of tertiary riders from tiermaker bc it’s not an official designation and there’s no canon list
Tumblr media
kivala: self-explanatory
mage: self-explanatory. although I actually think if the other two mages were also women that would annoy me more bc it’s like oh women can be riders but only off-brand burlap colored ones. I see
delta: was a women in canon, briefly, off-screen. if she had stayed alive as a character instead of dying for takumi’s manpain that could have been interesting. the guy who ended up as the delta user was so boring that at least if he were a woman that would be something to stand out
snipe: thinking about nico snipe here. but in general i have no problem with the idea of a weird annoying woman who lives in an abandoned hospital and gets bullied by her teenage protégé
chalice: why not. feral woman in the process of rehabilitation who threatens to fucking kill people but warms up due to family and friendship? that’s good. it would also make people read kenzaki and hajime’s relationship as overtly romantic
todoroki: we just need more dumb female jocks in the world
den-o rod form: I dont consider the various den-o forms to be different riders but they’re on here so. I also already forgot why I put ura in this category. oh it’s bc I think his role within the group is kind of to make plans and wrangle the others which is often a feminine role anyway
den-o axe form: just for the yukata open to the waist with bandaged chest under vibe
necrom: that guy already basically has the character arc of a spoiled princess who learns about the real world
kuuga (onodera yuusuke): just why not. there isn’t anything about yuusuke that i think would become weird when applied to a female character instead. the fandom reaction to a female yuusuke I don’t know about. tsukasa/yuusuke shipping might become very big but also the number of people who think she is quote yuuseless unquote might increase too
woz: I think woz could be a woman. it doesn’t break the cardinal rule that a woz is a woz so it’s fine. woz’s slavish devotion towards sougo might become more unpleasant coming from a woman towards a man but I think it would be mitigated by woz clearly being evil and having insane woz motives
zolda: talked about this last night. I do think it would be good. also it would make that huge hilarious gun cool and sexy bc it would be like the valkyrie cannon scene in ragnarok
gills: a woman who’s a feral loner who screams and punches people. a swamp wife. sounds good to me
hoppers: hell hopper sisters anyone? they’re already such stupid and ridiculous characters that switching their gender wouldn’t trouble me. in fact it might even be a victory for feminism
leangle: I put him in maybe bc everyone in the entire show already dunks on him constantly so if it was “everyone is rude to the only female rider all the time” that would be no good. although if hajime is also a woman.. hmm...
drake: I think female daisuke would have to become a heterosexual woman bc so much of his character is hitting on babes and I dont think toei would allow an out and proud lesbian hero. in 2007 especially. but a flirty and stupid woman who always gets saved by her kid sister could be done well or poorly
zangetsu: somehow the idea of takatora being a woman in a position of power whose employees are all plotting against her bc she;s a huge dumbass doesn’t sit right with me. but there are no huge red flags so. nee-san is single and doesn’t have a husband
gridon: dont care about that guy maybe if he was a lady I would
bravo: oren’s a flamboyant gay man, so translated to a female character she would become a butch lesbian. butch lesbian who was a private military contractor but settled down for her dream of running a bakery is less good to me as a plot but I think I could deal bc oren doesn’t just give up on fighting
I dont even remember who this next guy is. oh knuckle. all i remember about him is he was kinda gay s maybe it would be bad to make him a woman bc then she would just come off as straight
chaser: gouchase becomes canon. theres maybe some weird stuff that might arise with a female chase but not worse than anything about medic so whatever
raia: I actually dont think tezuka should be a woman but I’m not mad about it so I didn’t make a category just for him. I think it becomes more cringe for a woman to dramatically die for shinji and I also think now that tezuka is canonically gay we shouldn’t erase that. even if female tezuka is a lesbian it’s still like wow another dead lesbian
lazer: female kiriya being like “ohoho I flirt with you but I also lie all the time” would come off different. people already portray kiriya as a fox in fanart but if she were a lady you wouldn’t even be able to find fanart without ears and tail. however I do want to see a female character who dresses exactly like kiriya
grease: I like the idea of a rough and tumble farmer lady who’s always going around with her boys. the mii-tan thing could be better or worse, depending. full on lesbian kazumin is worse bc it makes her obsessive horny lesbian who can’t take a no. kazumin who is theoretically a straight woman but just really loves mii-tan as an idol could be ok
rogue: i forgot his name. sorry gentoku. gentoku as a female villain who defects for a reason other than ~love~ would be good. but gentoku being secretly obsessed with ugly fashion is somehow bad to me in a female character
ryugen: no. we cant. no.
sasword: why did I put him in this category? well I think his comical and contrived failures to understand how the world works come close to crossing a line at times already and if tsurugi were a female character there is no way that it wouldn’t be used to infantilize and sexualize her in a creepy way. I thought about that scene where tsurugi dresses as a schoolboy and the outfit’s too small. that was already weird and unnecessary. I imagined it as an adult woman in a too-small schoolgirl uniform and I said Absolutely Not
Change Of Heart
@literally-ritsu forgot it was Takano’s birthday but fear not. here’s a short fic. its not really takano eccentric but eh.
-x-
The air is frightening outside, leaving countless bodies full of chill and numbness all over as they trudge through the blizzard. Maybe that was a bit extreme but it had been a long time since it was last like this. Snows were piles high, reaching their shins even! They had workers outside on the streets, tossing salt everywhere and shoveling snow to the side so there could be some walkways. No one could say it wasn’t a white Christmas this year.
Ritsu Onodera stood in the craze weather at a bus stop, waiting for the noon ride. He was covered lightly in snow, his brown-colored locks had white sprinkled all across on him and the shoulders of his coat. There he sat with a bored expression. If he felt anything, it was probably annoyance and exhaustion mixed. He wasn’t sure the word for it.
What can he say? He really didn’t want to go home. It was his first year in college and winter break had fallen. Somehow, his parents figured this out and immediately demanded he come home. They probably would have called anyways. Students do always get Christmas off.
His mother claimed they needed to ‘talk’ as if he didn’t know what she was talking about. She was practically ignoring the screaming matches they had over the phone this past week about how she was being controlling, demanding he study this or that, work here or there, and decide who he should marry and who he shouldn’t. She had this stupid idea of how he should live his life and what he was supposedly ‘meant’ to be. He was meant to be a fairly intelligent and charming man who studied Business for his degree with great grades, speculator connections, and the approval of the student body who would end up becoming the CEO of Onodera Publishing and marry his sweet, kind childhood friend An.
Well, he didn’t really turn out that way. He really sucked when it came to science and amth, he was horrible at public speaking. He swore he couldn’t speak a word in front of a crowd without stammering or stuttering or messing up somehow. He barely had what he could call friends, only one person really came close to it. He was studying Literature & Arts, not Business. He was practically unknown by anyone but the certain man mentioned before and his friends. Furthermore, he got panic attacks from the idea of having the responsibility over so many people and the future of an economy.
He wasn’t exactly what you would classify as ‘straight either.
The one man he’s closest to is named Takano Masamune, a junior in his same major. He funnily enough minors in mathematics. The thought of himself ever doing the same makes Ritsu want to barf. The same man was sat beside him on the cold bench at the bus stop, staring out at the icy road as million of snowflakes continue to fall and cover the concrete.
He’s close to what he would call a friend because he is his boyfriend. How did it happen? He’s not exactly sure, he’ll be honest. It just kind of did. Before he knew it, he was forced into a project with the upperclassmen by the professor and the more time he spent with the man in question, the more he found he liked him and his presence. Even though he was completely awkward and embarrassing around him, he enjoyed the time he spent with him. The loud laughter and flushed, aching cheeks were new and refreshing compared to the misery and loneliness he’s known all to well all his life.
It wasn’t too long before Takano noted what was going on. Ritsu was apparently obvious to anyone, especially the upperclassmen. He started doing these things like scooting closer to Ritsu, pulling a loose strand of hair behind his ear, touching him in innocent little ways, and whispering against him. It made him flush all the brighter and lose the breath he was supposed to be breathing. It drove him insane.
“You’ve definitely got a crush on me, Onodera, don’t try to hide it now.” Takano chuckled, smirking smuggling. The sight annoyed Ritsu. He reached out and pinched the bright red, making Ritsu go dizzy. “Let’s go on a date sometime. Hmm, you don’t have anymore classes today right? Great, you’ve got an hour to get ready. Yokozawa gave me tickets to the Percy Jackson Musical, let’s go see it together. Oh, I can’t promise I won’t kiss you. Do you know how hard it’s been these last few weeks to not smother you?”
“I - uh - w-what…?” Ritsu stammered, eyes wide and mouth gaping.
“Cute,” Takano grinned, letting go of his cheek and gently patted his cheek. “Now go on, go back to your dorm and get ready for our first date. Otherwise, I just might make sure you can’t leave this room with a certain mark on your neck.”
Needless to say, Ritsu ran out of his dorm room at the threat. He was highly embarrassed but there was no denying the excitement bubbling inside his heart with each quick thump inside his chest. As Takano predicted, once they stepped outside after listening to the musical and Ritsu started going on about like the nerd he is, he was smothered against Takano, not that he minded. Sure, he was a bit breathless, dizzy, and felt like he was dying at the moment because oh my god, Takano Masamune is kissing me! Otherwise, it was great.
The said boyfriend, five months later, was agitated at his side. He really didn’t want Ritsu to go back home.
“Can’t you lie and say you’ve got the flu?”
“My aunt is a nurse and she never fails to show up for a family meeting, especially a holiday one. She’s a high-profile superior at her work so she always gets them off.” Ritsu snorted.”Plus, I suck at lying. You know this.”
“Why do you have to go? Can’t you just skip?” Takano pouted, making Ritsu smile. “
It is my birthday. I would skip for yours.”
“Mine isn’t on an international holiday that emphasizes family.”
“Oh come on,” Takano turned to look at him, a serious look taking form in his eyes. “You know what this is going to be. You’re gonna go home, I’m gonna go home as well since ‘well, why not?’ and then you’re going to call me in a frenzy after they throw slurs at both me and you, try to pressure you to be some perfect doll, which you are not and don’t want to be, and leave you in a mess. I don’t mind you calling me, that’s not what I’m saying. I’m just saying you could avoid all of it by skipping this year.”
“Yeah, you’re probably right.” Ritsu sighed, “I wish they would understand.”
“Ritsu,” He felt his gloved hand took in Takano’s cold one. How was his hands not numb by now? “They have never understood. They see what they want to see and try to make you what they want. You’re family, Ritsu, not an employee. You have your own dreams, goals, and ambitions completely separate from them. You even have different morals and wants than them, you aren’t the same and shouldn’t be expected to be such. They don’t even know you, Ritsu.”
He couldn’t really deny that, he wouldn’t even if he wanted to. It would be naive and foolish to do so. You can’t ignore the abuse and neglect forever. There comes a time where reality slams you against the wall and makes you open up your eyes. Everything he ever did was for his family, for what his mother wanted him to do. Every school he went too, including his current university, was of her finest choice. Any ‘friend’ he made? She basically forced his way with playdates in the name of gathering ‘good connections’ and ‘social standing’. Always something he never understood as a five-year-old and dreaded when he was older, capable of finally understanding what all her reasons entailed.
“But I would end up causing chaos afterwards and I really don’t want to deal with that over break.” Ritsu sighed, feeling more tired in the snowy wonderland. How he wished he was back at Takano’s dormroom forced into a shared burrito-blanket session with hot chocolate in between their cold hands and stupid Hallmark movies on his cheap laptop. It would be all coy and warm, much preferable to the dreadful weather he’s stuck in now waiting on a stupi bus so he could to a place he’d rather avoid for the rest of his life if possible.
“Have you ever taken a risk in your life?” Takano asked, curious.
Ritsu pouted and looked away.
“Wouldn’t it be nice to take the first one tonight?” Takano asks, falling against Ritsu. He feels the heavy weight of Takano’s head on his shoulder. He smiles to himself, he can be cute when he lets himself be. It’s endearing.
“You’re awfully optisimic.” Ritsu snorts with a silly grin.
“No, you’re just so unbearably pessimistic that logic seems like optimism to your flawed brain.”
“Maybe you’re right on that one.”
“I’m always right.”
“Says the person whose left-handed.”
He got shoved for that one but it makes both of them laugh anyways. What cracks them out of their perfect little joyful bubble is the loud whine of the bus as it pulls up, the doors folding out to open. The old bus driver sits there annoyed, probably from how difficult it is to work with the weather during times like these when your job is driving, in layers upon layers to protect himself from the frightful weather.
“You kids on this bus? Hurry up with your suitcase, it’s cold out here!” He calls, making Ritsu stiffen. “I mean, just look at you two, pale as the snow itself!”
Ritsu breathes in deeply, feeling the weight of the suitcase as he stands up from off the bench and drags it alongside him. He keeps his head bowed as he reaches the creaky, old-fashioned bus doors. He turns as he steps on the first step of three, smiling back at Takano. “I’ll see you later. Can I call?”
Takano lets out a huff, smiling nonetheless, and throws his head back against the bench. Hi body relaxes and slacks against it despite the distrateriously cold weather. “I’d be a jerk if I said no. That’s not a good impression on your folks, now is it?”
It makes Ritsu laugh.
“Get on if you’re gonna get on, otherwise move it. I’ve got a schedule, bud.” The bus driver huffs, impatiently tapping on the wheel with his gloved finger in annoyance. Ritsu stiffens,his heart racing,
“Sorry.” Ritsu says weakly. He steps on board, his suitcase hitting each step as he goes up. He finds himself down the aisle and into a window seat, staring back at his boyfriend who looks so incredibly lazy for once. It makes him giggle. He waves.
Takano, despite his distaste for his decision, waves back with a smile.
That warms his heart up more than the built-in heaters of the bus.
The bus goes off, Takano is passed by, completely out of his sight. He sits back, releasing a long sigh. He closes his eyes and just lets himself breath in and out.
The bus seat is scratchy and feels stiff against his body but that’s okay. He’ll get home soon, in about two hours.
‘Home’. That’s what he’s called it. It’s a prison if anything. He’s learned that ever since he started living on his own. The freedom that came with it was so unexpected and invigorating left him high on it initially but as time passed, it was just the same.
Until Takano. He didn’t avoid him because of his blood nor was he easily scared off when his family threatened him. If anything, that made him want to stay closer to Ritsu. In reality. Takano is what Ritsu considers to be a true version of home for him.
He’s apologized and bent over backwards for so many things he’s never wanted to. There were things he didn’t and did regret because of these unrealistic expectations. The memories make him clench his fist against his knee where it formerly laid relaxed.
He wants to laugh and cry at the thought of what he’s walking back into. What will he do there? Simple, what he always so. He’ll swallow his words, trying to keep a smile on his face without choking on the traumatic feelings that squeeze his heart unfairly. He’ll remember what it is like to learn to be silent, to be nothing but a doll again despite fighting it all this time while he was away. He can’t deny that he’s a coward, it’s true.
“Hush Ritsu, dear, we just want what’s best for you. We’ve thought long and hard about this. We know it’s good for you. Let’s not have this conversation here, dear, it’s not very becoming of you. Your public image has been untarnished for now, we need to keep it that way.”
Words, questions, and topics that you don’t mention and if you dared to bring them up, expect everyone in the room to look at you like a glorified freak who has said the worst crime of all. You just need to be quiet, close your mouth and swallow your pride.
Swallow your self-worth and make it disappear. You don’t need that. You’re nothing but a puppet for them to play after all.
You’ll never know if you’ll survive this; it’s really an endless battle within and outside yourself.
“I think your mind is interesting, maybe a little crazy. Nothing can be truly seen without a little bit of color, right?” Takano nudges him, making him blush and look down at his Plato textbook. “You should talk more, I like how unruly and fast you are about it. It’s cute at the very least. I want to know what that head of yours is thinking, Ritsu Onodera.”
He blushes at the memory resurfacing. God, he regrets getting on this bus. He wishes he had just given in.
“Last stop before I get into Osaka, anyone getting off?” The bus driver calls, loud and throaty. Much as he dislikes that type of sound, he feels a spark of hope in him. Maybe he could head back. He stands up. “Ugh, of course it’s you, kid. Come on, off.”
He nearly trips down the stairs but that’s okay because he doesn’t fall and he finds himself on the corner of 7th street. That’s not too far from their university. It’s about a thirty-minute walk or a ten minute drive on a highway.
Oh god, his mother is going to kill him. He hears the door close loudly behind him and the whine of the bus as it drives off. He is so dead when she calls but he ignores that in favor for calling his boyfriend instead. This will be a surprise.
“Already calling me?” Takano laughs into the speaker. “What, are you hitchhiking or something?”
“...maybe?”
“...what.”
“I’m, uh, at Cherry 7th street?”
“I know I have said this before but I might be in love you.” He can hear how breathless Takano sounds. He can tell he’s throwing his jacket back on by the sound of the zipper.
That makes Ritsu laugh.
And he certainly wasn’t expecting to come face first with his first love who broke his heart from when he was a teenager: who just happens to be his new editor-in-chief.
Dan was never the most exuberant student when it came to anything school related. He was average in most respects. He got passing grades on everything he did and he was okay with just staying average because he knew that he had a job lined up anyway at the end of his education.
But that still didn’t deter from the fact that Dan loved books and he loved reading. And anytime he wasn’t expected in a classroom, he was sitting in the library with a stack of books on the table waiting to be opened.
He was only 14 when he first noticed him, sitting at the table just across from Dan. He was busy with his nose tipped into a book and a look of determination reading across his blue eyes. Dan stopped in his tracks when he saw him, not knowing who he was but suddenly wanting to know everything about him.
But they never meet. Not right away.
It’s a year later when they finally do. Dan’s short for his age, not having fully grown into his growth spurt that’ll kick in within the next year or two. He’s standing on his tip toes, trying desperately to reach the copy of Catcher in the Rye on the top shelf of the stack. He knew that he wanted to read the book after hearing so much about it and he was getting annoyed that they put the book too damn high for him.
A hand suddenly reaches over his own and grabs the book with perfect ease and hands it to him. Dan turns his head and a blush furiously overtakes his cheeks as he sees him. The guy who he’s been crushing on for over a year.
This is the first time that they’ve ever interacted and there is something about him that makes Dan feel speechless and short of breath. He can’t believe that something as simple as him reaching up and grabbing a book for him could spark such feelings.
They don’t speak, not even for Dan to say thank you or for him to say you’re welcome. He just nods his head at Dan and walks past just in time for Dan to turn around and see him standing at the book drop off. He puts a few books on the desk and leaves them behind, heading to one of the tables.
Dan looks around the stack, curious because he wants to know what types of books this boy is reading. He wants to know everything he possibly can about him.
He walks out of the stacks and heads to the desk and picks up the books and opens the inside cover.
Phil Peterson.
So this “him” has a name and it’s Phil. Dan looks at Phil and smiles to himself as he signs out the same books and packs them in his bag.
***
Dan doesn’t ever talk to Phil between the time of their first meeting and the present: three years later. He watches Phil from afar, and he’s aware that as much of a stalker as that makes him sound, he swears on his heart that he is not. He’s just a poor boy who is in love with another boy and has yet to grasp the concept that this isn’t taboo.
Being in love with someone of the same sex isn’t something to be ashamed of.
He spends most of his free time bouncing between being at the library and being home where he reads all the books that his father gives him that his company has published. He has a whole bookshelf at his house that he keeps them on.
But one day at the library, he really wants to read a new book that the library just got in and put into the system and it’s a book by Stephen King, which Dan wasn’t expecting the school library to actually get. He had read the reviews online and he thought the plot sounded really good so he was really excited when he saw it on the card that told him it was new.
Dan circled the shelves until he came to the K’s and then he looked up and down and sighed when he saw the book on the highest shelf. Of course it was, and of course he still hadn’t hit a damn growth spurt yet and he had to stand up on his tip toes to reach it.
He tried to balance as he reached up for the book but as soon as his hand reached up, another hand went up too and they brushed as Dan gasped and rocked backward. He turned his head to see Phil stood there, his hair hanging over his eyes slightly as he grabbed the book from the shelf and gave it to Dan.
“Thanks, Phil.”
Dan’s mouth says it before he can fully comprehend what he just said. Phil turns his head to him and cocks his brows, “How do you know my name?” He asks. “I don’t think I’ve ever talked to you before.”
Dan’s blushes furiously as he tries to gather his thoughts.
“Oh...um...we had a class together, one time,” Dan says as his mouth just spews out whatever excuse he can figure out to make himself not look like a creep.
Phil nods slowly and then smiles back at him, “Do you like Stephen King?”
He points down at the new Doctor Sleep book that is poised in Dan’s hand and Dan follows his finger as he makes eye contact with the eyes on the cover and then jolts up and nods his head, “I really like Stephen King! I think he makes really good horror novels.”
Phil smiles wider at him, "What one is your favorite by him?" He asks. "I really like IT but there will always be a special place in my heart for The Shining."
"I've never read IT or The Shining," Dan answers truthfully, spinning the book in his hand. "But I have read Kujo and Misery and I really liked those so I thought maybe I would like this one too."
Phil turns from him for a moment and Dan worries that maybe he said something to upset him. But then he notices Phil is looking over all of the books on the shelf and he makes a defeated sigh when he gets to the end of the line of Stephen King books.
"It's a shame that they don't have either of those books here," Phil says. "I would love to hear your thoughts on them."
"Oh, yeah," Dan finds himself muttering.
"Do you have any plans after school today?" Phil asks, "I have an entire collection of Stephen King books that you could borrow and check out."
A blush rises in Dan's cheeks and he shakes his head, "No, I don't have any plans."
"Oh, awesome!" Phil smiles, "Meet me outside the front door after school and I can walk you back to my place."
Dan nods and Phil walks away. Dan holds the book closer to his chest and squeezes it with his arms as he smiles wildly and lets out an incredulous laugh at how he just made a new friend with the kid that he likes all over an author of a book.
***
Dan was feeling stiff as he walked to Phil's house beside him. He felt awkward, not sure what to do because he wasn't all that acquainted to going to peoples houses. Most of the time, he didn't get invited.
Phil tells him little things along the way, telling him about the different houses in his neighborhood to where his dog ran away when he was young. Dan took in everything that Phil was saying and eventually they ended up at the front of Phil's house as Phil was fishing the key out of his coat pocket.
"My parents aren't really ever home," Phil says with a tinge of sadness in his voice. "So it's kind of like I live alone."
"Oh?" Dan says, "For work?"
Phil stiffens for a second and shrugs, "Something like that."
Dan feels like he shouldn't have said anything but the natural need to be curious won out and now he feels a bit like a dick. He shouldn't be asking anything about the private life of someone else.
"I can go get us some drinks," Phil says. "My bedroom is right upstairs if you want to check out the books. They should be on the little shelf next to my bed."
Dan nods and walks to the stairs where he heads up them and goes into the room that he assumes is Phil's. He looks around and sees all of the books and notebooks thrown everywhere onto the floor. It actually looks a bit homey. Not like his bedroom back home where his parents force him to keep everything neat and tidy.
"Do you like tea?" Phil asks. "This one says that it's a green tea on the packaging."
Dan turns his head and sees Phil offering him a mug and he takes it with a smile on his lips. He brings it up to his lips and takes a sip, "It's good."
Phil sets his cup on the table next to his bed and Dan follows suit, not sure what he should actually be doing. He doesn't exactly know the etiquette of what he should do as a guest inside someone else's home when he's not at some fancy party with his parents.
"If you want to look down here," Phil says, bending down and pulling out a stack of books, "The Shining and IT should be here but if they're not, I can find them for you. I'm sure that they're here somewhere in my room."
Dan just smiled and picked up the books and set them on Phil's bed, "You can sit on my bed, you know." Phil says, motioning to the wrinkled comforter on what is definitely Phil's bed.
Dan takes a seat on it and looks through all of the books as Phil watches over him. He finds both of the ones he was looking for and when he goes to hand the other books back to Phil, he sees Phil is staring down at him with intent, "Didn't we have a similar encounter over another book like a few years ago?" Phil asks.
Dan blushes and nods, "Yeah, it was over another book that I wanted to read but I was too short to reach it on the shelf."
Phil nods and laughs a bit, "That's what I thought."
There is a silence in the room for a moment until Phil finally speaks up and says, "You didn't learn my name from a class, did you?"
Dan's mouth goes dry and he feels his chest tighten as he braces himself for whatever blow he's going to get from Phil. Which, frankly, he probably does deserve it a bit because what he has been doing has been creepy. If he thinks about it, he's been watching and studying Phil for nearly three years.
"I...I got your name for the library card in the books you checked out."
Phil nods and brushes his hair out of his eyes. Phil has such nice long hair, Dan supposes. It looks like a beautiful hair that you can run your hands through and Dan desperately wants to do that right now, "Do you like me, Dan?"
Dan meets his eyes and stutters because if he answers truthfully, he might get punched or get decked or worse and his stomach is suddenly fluttering harder and he feels like it's getting harder to breathe.
"It's okay if you do," Phil adds on, "Because I like you too and I wouldn't mind getting to know you and maybe even eventually date you."
Dan opens and closes his mouth and Phil just smiles as he suddenly leans forward and is brushing his lips to Dan's. Dan gasps and tries to return the kiss but he doesn't know how. He's never kissed anyone before, let alone another boy.
"Don't close your lips so tightly," Phil chuckles. "Makes it stiff."
Dan nods and tries his best to follow what Phil says as he leans down again and kisses him once more as Phil lowers him to the bed.
The bed is comfortable under Dan's back, despite the ache in his hips that Phil had settled between just moments before. He's not sure if he did anything correctly, or if Phil himself knew what he was doing.
It hurt, more than anything but he tried to drive those thoughts out of his head as he let his body climb in pleasure. But it wasn't until Phil cried out his name and kissed his neck before collapsing on his side next to Dan when Dan got emotional. As Phil slept beside him, his arm thrown over Dan's chest, Dan let a few tears slide out.
Sleep didn't come easy.
***
"You're not using the correct formulas."
Dan looks up and over his shoulder at Phil who is sat next to him in the library. Phil was helping him with his math homework which Dan knew he was shit at. But he literally didn't know any of the correct formulas to use and it was showing as Phil kept correcting him.
"You're just kind of solving these and praying for the best," Phil says with a chuckle.
Dan erases all of his work and puts a small tear into the paper as he lets out a sigh of frustration. He pushes his chair back and stands up, walking away from the table, "I'm going to go get a math book."
Phil leans back in his chair and drums the tips of his fingers on the wooden table top.
Dan feels like this shouldn't be awkward but yet it is because he doesn't know how to react around Phil. He had just done all of that with Phil two days ago and this was the first time that they've spoken since.
Dan had left the next morning in such a haste to get back to his house before his parents noticed that he didn't even grab any of the books he intended to read. He just grabbed his clothing and his bag and he ran out of the door and walked across town.
But now, Phil was helping him after seeing Dan struggling with his math homework in the library so he feels like the conversation about what happened between them is inevitable. And maybe that’s why he’s hiding in the math textbook section of the library that he’s never ventured to before.
In the distance, he can hear other people talking, having normal conversations with each other, and he almost wishes he wasn’t socially challenged and could just talk to Phil, ask him what they are. He just wants to know if he should let his hopes bubble up in his heart that Phil is more than just a one time thing for him.
He really likes Phil...a lot. And he gave him such an intimate part of himself.
“You don’t need a textbook for this,” Phil’s voice scares him and Dan jumps back from the shelf. “Why are you avoiding me?”
Dan’s cheeks heat up and he opens and closes his mouth a few times, “I’m not trying to.”
“But you haven’t spoken to me since you left my house,” Phil counters. “If you didn’t want to actually talk to me, you could at least tell me that.”
“That’s not the case,” Dan says. “I just...what did Tuesday night mean to you?”
Phil furrowed his brows, “It meant the same to me as it did for you.”
Dan didn’t know what that entirely meant but it still made his heart race all of the same.
“Do you want to come back over to my house again after school?” Phil asks, cutting through Dan’s thoughts. “We can talk more there than we can here, especially with the library closing soon.”
Dan turned his head outside of the stacks and noticed the setting sun just beyond the curtains of the window. Yeah, it was getting late. He should probably tell his parents where he is going to be...fuck, he would need to tell his parents again that he wasn’t coming home tonight.
Because he is going to be spending the night at Phil’s again right?
Suddenly, he doesn’t know and everything feels overwhelming as his chest contracts again.
“Okay,” He eventually says.
Phil smiles at him and walks out of the stacks, back to the table where Dan’s empty math homework laid open. As Phil sat down at the table, it was like a beam of setting sun came through the window and projected onto his skin and just like that, Dan knew:
He was in love.
This is a personal opinion but from where I see it the Given movie and the anime itself definitely was... something that I would question because somethings just.. didn't make sense to me. The development of the Characters were either super fast or super slow and it made the pacing really really weird for me idk. But I do think that a huge reason so many people love the Given movie is because of the fact that when you compare Given to OTHER JP BL animes, there's very very slight improvement in terms of the story itself of Given. Is the story poorly executed? Fucking hell, who the hell is going to say no here. But is it better then some of the JP BLs out there? That's depended on how you view BL to be. For a lot of people things like Super Lovers or Hitorijime My Hero are super unbearable to watch because it's "problematic" (which honestly okay, you do you BB) which then leads them to look for BL animes that DON'T have such "themes." Leading them to actually liking things poorly executed but just "not problematic", Given for example.
Given is “not problematic”? Debatable.
Their first kiss was right after Mafuyu finally had a courage to sing a song about his ex who commited a suicide. ???
Problematic doesn’t only mean stuff like “he’s underage”. What about using someone to get over your grief or getting into a relationship with someone who is still not over his ex death and is vulnerable at the moment? Is this suddenly “not problematic” bc they’re same age and he haven’t pushed him into a wall in throws of passion?
To me it’s not even about the fact if it’s problematic or not (it’s rarely not tho, no matter what ppl think), it’s about whether its believable and feels genuine or not. It depends on many factors: situation, characters past, traumas, etc, etc. It depends on the story and how you write it.
Change some stuff and it’s gonna be a completely different thing. Make it like Uenoyama only hugged Mafuyu after the song, even tho he wanted to kiss him, but knows that it’s not the right moment. Make Mafuyu heal first, make Uenoyama be in his own angst that he loves Mafuyu so much for example, but cares about him recover more, so he doesn’t expect for it to go somewhere, then he tries to date someone and Mafuyu first starts getting out there, when he feels like he can start trying again. Someday he gets sick and Uenoyama cancels his date to take care of him even tho it’s nothing serious and then the realization comes. Make Mafuyu kiss him first and take the first step. This would’ve changed everything so much. He should’ve made the first step when he was ready, this would’ve felt so right. Uenoyama kissing him after that song is just.. it feels, I was like ehhhmmm.. weird?
Seeing someone saying that Given is a masterpiece is hilarious to me. The fact that it includes heavy themes like suicide, doesn’t make it a masterpiece, esp when it’s handled this badly. Once again, if you pick such thing as a base for a love story, do it right then, not in a “bibbidi bobbidi boo” kind of thing.
BL or not BL, any relationships, it depends on whether you watch it and it feels plausable or not.
For example, if Yuu says that he can’t live with Mika, my tongue won’t even twist to call it “unhealthy” or be like “dude why”. But if some high schooler in slice of life anime who has a caring family tried to end himself bc his two weeks friend left him, I would’ve yelled “bitch go see a doctor”.
Depending on the story you can sell some feelings or not.
Nezumi and Shion are also problematic according to ppl’s logic these days. But I 100% believe they’re each other’s true loves. Only 11 episodes and it’s sold.
In Given I didn’t believe it. Bc it’s ridiculous, ok? It wasn’t the right place or time to start this relationship. It is not a new love story, it’s just a sad story.
Given movie is slightly better compared to other japanese BL? Why would you offend Sekaiichi Hatsukoi, Uragiri wa boku no namae, No.6 and many others?
Also better where? They kept the same old “’stop, i don’t want to’, but he did it anyway” stuff AND on top of that the story sucks.
The way he used him knowing very well that he was unrequitedly in love with him for so long is so disgusting that it leaves a much grosser feeling than many yaois combined. You’re saying “it’s slightly better” bc they’re of age or don’t have an age difference? I don’t get it. It somehow makes everything better?
No, thanks. I’d rather watch Onodera sleep with Takano in high school with them being genuinely into each other and it going great than whatever happened in the Given movie. I don’t care if they’re both 18 there, it made me feel bad.
I didn’t feel bad, when Wei Wuxian thought “why the fuck didn't I have sex with Lan Zhan back when I was 15? I've really pissed away all my days, haven't I?”. I wonder why is that.
Like what you’re saying here is that their opinion on BL is so low that they automatically would give it 10 out of 10 bc it’s slightly better than smth that they find “unbearable” to watch? What kind of evaluation is that exactly? Maybe also let’s compare each anime to “boku no pico”, then everything will look like a masterpiece.
Like excuse me for the fact that when I watch some shonen-ai and yaoi, I judge it the same way I judge any other genre and any other relationships (hetero or gay) in animes. On a scale whether I care or don’t care, whether I believe that they love each other or don’t, whether it’s a good story or not. I don’t get what it means “it’s good for yaoi”. It’s just not good. This movie is trash, I mean, the relationship in it is trash. Who the fuck cares gay or not gay. Trash relationships are trash. Bad story is a bad story. Whether it’s a bad gay story or a bad hetero story, I don’t give a shit.
The reason I’m more into boy on boy ships is because I love the relationships there more than relationships in most heterosexual couples. My fav hetero ships are either “from hate/attraction to love” stories like “gone with the wind”, “anastasia” or “pride and prejudice” or stuff like “equals without pink goo, who only see each other and don’t need no one else and would die for each other, epic soulmates” like Richard and Kahlan. In anime 99% of those fit bromances, not romances. Like I don’t find Midoriya/Uraraka appealing at all for a reason that “she said ‘hi’, he blushed as a tomato, now they’re supposed to be each other’s romantic interests” is not what I find romantic. I find romantic the fact that Todoroki is forever devoted to Midoriya bc he knows he’s amazing and is not afraid to say it; and he’ll always be there for him when he needs him, no matter what it is, him just sitting there crying, some villain trying to kill him or if he’s too late out ther grossery shopping. Uraraka most of the times doesn’t even care where he is.
Most hetero romantic animes, I just find ridiculous, too cheesy and unrealistic and I’m not ready to watch 50 episodes for them to hold hands. I’m not in that age and I also never found things like this romantic before either. Stuff like Kisa/Yukine, when you meet someone, find him attractive, wanna fuck him, then fall in love accidentally.. yeah, that’s understandable to me. Stuff like Takano/Onodera “I was an naive idiot in high school, but now life made me a sassy bitch and I can’t open up to people as easily” also yes, relatable.
When you’re turning into a tomato bc someone said “penis” and think holding hands will take your virginity or smth, that’s not my thing.
So when I watch BL, I expect more, not less. So if it’s bad, I just say it’s bad, I’m not gonna be like “hmm... unproblematic... then 10/10″ like what?
1stly, even “little mermaid” and “cinderella” are problematic.
2ndly everyone is so focused on purity these days, like storyline don’t matter at all. It’s like any great love story is automatically trash if they have age difference. Any trash love story is great, if they don’t?
Let’s then also rate “Dororo” as 1, bc it’s like 24 episodes of them falling for each other while she’s 11 and he’s 16. Wow, such gross relationships they have during the whole story. Doesn’t matter that she grew up at the end of the last episode, the whole anime she’s a child. And let’s rate Noragami 0, bc 2000 years old perverted Yato is into 15 year olds.
No one has to fuck asap (heck even in the same hella problematic “Super Lovers” you talk about, Haru refused to fuck Ren even tho he was 17 in s2 and wanted to fuck another guy) and the rule “you can only fall in love after 18″ doesn’t exist. Also underage is not BL thing, it’s all anime thing. It’s time to shut it already. There are zillions of age gap couples out there who are great. Hyakkimaru waited for Dororo to grow up, it’s fine, seriously, they love each other in the right way, he didn’t want to fuck her when she was 11, okay? They did love each other tho already then. Pls excuse them for that.
3rdly, some relationship that ppl here call unproblematic are 20 times more problematic, than what they call problematic.
4tly, why the heck it’s like couples who have an amazing character and relationship progression, who love each other to death and will do anything for each other, ppl go: “wow, at the very beginning, he grabbed his wrist, he needs to go to jail”. Meanwhile a relationship who has no base, no story, no logical progression, no anything are “yes, best love story in the world”. Yeah... who cares if it feels like it’s all been pulled out of an ass and doesn’t make sense, very healthy tho.
It sounds lately like if most ppl here had two stories in front of them and one would be about two men who just met and the next day one proposed and they lived happily ever after and 2nd would be some complicated incredible story with a natural progression of the relationship, but they yelled at each other once, they’d be like “1st is better”. Well, not to me, no.
