thoughts on battinson with his like seven kids and they have to suffer through everyone wanting to fuck him cause have you seen him??
Alright so this response kinda works in a competely separate realm of canon than what I usually post. I’m gonna preface that right now, but BOY do I have thoughts :D
So when I think of Battinson and his (non)accidental orphan acquisition, I see Battinson as being on a much more even playing field emotionally than most other iterations. He’s not really as stoic and put-together, so having kids (especially multiple) would cause a LOT more chaos and drama. So in this case, I like to think that it happens at a very rapid rate. (Again, I’m saying this because this require straying from the film’s canon to a much larger degree than I usually do.) SO by the time he’s 32, he has an 11yo Dick, a 9yo Jason, and an 8yo Tim. And they probably grow with him much like teen parents do with their kids. He’s not as authoritative as most parents. Instead, he starts out as like half older brother, half dad, then graduates to the roll of batdad after his whole vengeance era.
THAT ALL BEING SAID!! BECAUSE THEY’RE SO MUCH OLDER AND BRUCE IS YOUNGER, THEY DEAL WITH A LOOOOTTTTTT OF CREEPY LADIES TRYING GO GET WITH THEIR DAD. (AND THEY ARE VERY. SMART. FOR THEIR AGE)
Dick, older brother and the leader of the “Save Dad and Our Childhood Innocence” brigade teaches the three everything there is to know. He is the most experienced with these awful public events like galas and charity auctions, so he is in control.
And it is SO much easier to get the creepy suitors to back off when they work as a team
Dick talks everyone’s ears off. He’s the golden boy (getting perfect grades and gold medals in his school’s gymnastics team) so he EASILY gets away with distracting people
Dick will insert himself into adult conversations all the time, and Bruce always lets him, which allows Jason and Tim to wreak havoc on whatever target they chose.
Whenever it isn’t too obvious or it’s late enough in the night, Jason will fake a cold or a headache sometimes (he’s prone to falling sick) and Bruce will insist that he take his kid home and tuck him into bed himself, very fatherly
Tim uses his Youngest Child points to woo the nicer ones and direct them away from Bruce, but it doesn’t usually works on the gold diggers (and thank god because Tim HATES acting cute) so he’ll use it on Bruce instead
When those three plans don’t work, the three gremlins start getting Creative TM
Jason, taking a swig from some wine glass and proceeding to spray it all over Vicky Vale’s white dress: “This isn’t grape juice!”
Tim, resident iPad kid and (despite popular belief) The Most Evil of the Three, sees some lady touching his batdad so he finds her phone number on an online directory and prank calls her every time she gets too close
Suitor: “Your father is very handsome.” Dick: “My father’s dead :(” “…” “Oh wait, you mean Bruce! Yeah, he’s nice.”
One lady starts hanging off of Bruce, but he needs to run off to say hello to an investor. Jason appears from nowhere in his dapper little tux and the lady just says, “So uhh, you like the Wiggles, right?” Jason: “Nope! Have you ever read Crime and Punishment? :)”
Dick “accidentally” slaps some obnoxious guests with his wild hand gestures “Oh no! I’m so sorry :(( Let me get you an ice pack” and pulls them away while the other two hide their laughter
One of the ladies who is WAY too comfortable and forward when flirting with Bruce is forced to sit down with Tim and he goes in head first “what are you doing with my dad?” “oh you know what adults do, honey. Messing around, having fun” and he’s like “well My dad doesn’t look interested” “of course he is! who knows? Maybe we’ll hit it off and make another one of you one day” which gives Tim intense psychic damage, but he’s a horrible little brat so he doesn’t give up. He hits her with the innocent doe eyes and asks in the cutest fucking voice “Where do babies come from?” she BOOKS IT (they never see her again)
Anyway, to answer your question: they are little terrors. and Bruce knows they’re little terrors, but he doesn’t care because he hates the creepy attention even more than they do, but this way it comes with a show :D

BELLE and the fantasy of a non-corporate internet
Tumblr media
Just a little thing I kinda want to end out this week speaking about democratized media on. Because there is this little thing in Mamoru Hosoda's newest movie BELLE... I am honest: I am not entirely sure whether it is something Hosoda and his team thought about when making this movie. But... this movie has this wonderful little anarchist moment.
BELLE is all in all not really an anarchist movie. Nor is it Solarpunk. But it picks up this theme, that goes through several movies Hosoda has done. His "internet triology" how I like to call it:
Digimon Adventure: Bokura no Wargame
Summer Wars
BELLE
Three movies that are not only connected in aethetic, but also in theme. All three of them having a plot that takes place online for good chunks.
And that theme is of the internet connecting people all around the world. Of allowing people all around the world to connect.
The Digimon Adventure movie focuses on the idea of the young millennials in that movie having access and understanding of this new virtual world, that the older generation lacks. In the Japanese version of the movie there is a prolonged gag sequence of Yamato and Takeru trying to get access to the internet with a lot of confused adults thinking about whether or not they have this access.
This shifts in Summer Wars, where the internet suddenly is a place that everyone uses over a lot of different access points. In the finale we see people use the internet via phones, laptops, high end computers and video game consoles. Though it also gives a warning of us not relying on it too much.
And then we have BELLE, which focuses on the internet as a place where people can truly be themselves and connecting with each other, while being unable to connect in the real world (partly because of distance), as well as the internet of a place to rediscover yourself and as a medium to help each other.
But all three movies kinda have one scene in common. There is a scene towards the finale where all seems lost and the character outmatched by the antagonist. (I am gonna say something about the antagonists in a moment.) And then... everyone gets together. And by everyone I mean everyone. In Bokura no Wargame it is the emails of encouragement and the spirits of all those kids and teens watching the battle that allow War Greymon and Metal Garurumon to fuse into Omegamon. In Summer Wars it is the fact that everyone risks their accounts by handing them over to Natsuki that allows them to beat the AI in hanafuda. And in the finale of BELLE it is everyone banding together to sing and no longer supporting the self-appointed moderators that allows Suzu to make Kei hear her voice. It is the connection of people via the internet that allows people to succeed in these movies.
But there is one thing in which BELLE differs from the other two movies - or rather all three movies differ from each other.
Bokura no Wargame still very much is set in Web 1.0, before social media and the bottlenecking of the internet. Again, the movie makes this big thing out of the internet being a thing for the youth.
Meanwhile Summer Wars is set within a very corporate "everything platform". And while this movie does have some message about "yeah, maybe having all that data within one system is a bad thing, actually", there is not really a comment about the company running OZ and whether maybe one company should not own the one platform that in this world basically IS THE INTERNET.
BELLE is different in that regard. Because BELLE makes a point out of the fact that U is an open source platform that was created to... basically run anarchical. There was not supposed to be an central control. That the users were supposed to have control over their experience on the platform. But because the creators also did not want to have "control" over it, big companies just took over and devided U up between themselves, creating that moderation team that is seen as the antagonists within the movie. And here is the thing: That big scene of everyone coming together and singing? Yeah, that is the scene in which the users take the control over the platform back from the companies. And since U is basically the the internet in this world... Part of the finale is basically the users taking back their control over the internet.
And... I don't know. I have not seen people talk about this so far. But to me it is the nice and utopic part in this movie.
The internet is such a great thing to connect people. And that is something that Mamoru Hosoda has definitely understood better than many other film makers. And we just... should not let big coorporations take this from us.

How are you and your au co-maker friend doing? Any new ideas?
She is fine, for now she is really busy and has really hard time, so she wouldn't have time to even make anything with me. Wish her luck guys, because she is doing her best ❤️❤️❤️
And she isn't exactly co-maker, because she is from time to time making random content about transformers prime or rid15, I'm mainly creating content here, but thank to her Sideswipe is tampon now. :D
Tumblr media
But i can tell off what we were talking about last time:
Like lately we chosen to add that after Starscream almost died in explosion, when he was still mainly into scientific stuff, not only making Megan angry (when war was still active conflict and 90% of the population weren't dead), he met that time KO (when he was still teenager) and without getting licences, because how he could get his licence while the war, when practically all schools were in ruins XD So they met that time, KO helped him in coming back to better shape. This is why KO came to Nemesis in TFP with his husband Breakdown, because Starscream saw him as a trustworthy doctor. I don't need to add that they fucked AS ADULTS ON NEMESIS, when Breakdown was still around, because he was fine that KO wants to life in open relationship. They were still happy together :DD
We talked about the fact that Bee couldn't look at Sideswipe optics at the beginning, because he has Smokescreens optics and after all this shit that happened, it was really painful for him. He drank himself into unconsciousness, Ofc Grimlock and Danny were trying to comfort him as much he could (at that time Drift wasn't around yet, he joined with his sons team after 8-9 months Bee, Strongarm and Sides came to earth). He felt terrible, because it wasn't Sides fault that he born or that his best friend, which he treated like his older brother and first love in his life, made children when both of them was drunk. He didn't won't to hurt him or take revenge on the poor teen, which also had hard childhood like Bee and slowly but surly start to get close with. Sometimes he even thought of if he didn't leave him that day they told him about the protoforms, he would be now Sideswipe and Sunstreaker's father and maybe even marry KO. But those are only his thoughts. I was thinking of making black and while comic of it, but in his bot form not human. XDDD
We also lately write A LOT about Ultra Magnus and Wheeljack. Mainly we was thinking what Magnus was doing after the war and becasue he was like this big badass judge, he could just become the guy how almost rule Cybertron. I mean by it, that Cybertron came back to the almost state after the war and that is not a good news XD. "And what about Ratchet?" nothing, he doesn't give a fuck about him. After all, he himself as a guy in new created council vote to send Ratchet on Earth as his retirement and still explain himself by saying " this is last wish of Optimus Prime". I just like the idea that right hand of Prime, makes Cybertron great again, causing fulling prisons by ex cons and not happy with his decisions war veterans. It would also explain WHY FUCKING CYCLONUS WAS IN THE FUCKING FINAL, because he would be rebeliant that wants freedom for his ppl. He also created slums :), idk I think it's cool idea that Ultra Magnus was a villain of the series And I think Arcee would see sense in that and after all those years and ptsd, also got mature, she would fine peace in new worlds order. But she would still take back her father and brother back on Cybetron... at least be too kick his fucking ass. XDD And practically nobody can do anything with, only Bulkhead is living his best life as a worker, it doesn't mean that he is now fighting, he is just tired and like Arcee wants some peace in his life. After they banned contacting with earth and he could talk with Miko, he needed finally some peace. The same with KO and Smoke. He is living now with Wheeljack AS A FRIENDS!!! But from time to time, Wheeljack is showing up at Magnus mantion to fuck him, say hey to his daughter and then disappear for next 9 months. I'm just seeing NeoCybertron as a Gotham City but as a planet XDDD
I can't write more words, so do you have any more question? XD

I'm eternally full of wrath over the fact no one in Konoha knew about the chakra imprints of Naruto's parents in the seal.
Naruto would've died to Pein without ever knowing who his parents were because no one manned up and let him know what he had a right to know.
If not for his parents loving him enough to want to leave behind failsafes in case his seal was ever damaged so he'd at least get to be protected by them personally one more time he never fucking would've known. Maybe not until the fourth war arc with Minato as an edo tensei summoned by Sasuke and do you think Naruto would've EASILY worked with 4th Hokage who sealed the Kyubi into him right away? No. Konoha's inability to own up to its fuck ups and to be honest with the victims of those fuck ups would've endangered the entire world. And for what? "I just didn't feel up to talking about it" or maybe "We'll tell him when he's older/stronger/better/more mature/at least a chunin/can keep secrets" when they shouldn't be goalposting this anyway and also fucking you don't feel up to it? Naruto didn't feel up to being an orphan hated and despised by literally every adult around him
I'm sorry to continue to rant but
AND ANOTHER THING
Naruto goes literally YEARS without knowing the rasengan was his FATHER'S jutsu. YEARS.
Using this jutsu, his dad invented, without knowing it, all the time in every fight. And Naruto thinks he's just using a badass technique the perv sage showed him which belonged to the yondaime, he has no idea what it should mean to him and he is kept in the dark, for years.
Kakashi was 26-27 at the start of the show and 30 when Naruto comes back from the time skip, trauma or no that is a grown-ass man an adult the entire time we know him, who just.. observes this hard-working teen in his care who's clearly all about his bonds (See the Gaara rescue and the find Sasuke missions) because he never had anyone in his corner before team 7 and he just.. goes "hmm" and never fucking tells him anything about his parents who Kakashi knew? EITHER OF HIS PARENTS??? Anything about them!?? What they were like? Their habits? Their techniques? How happy they were he was going to be born? How he wasn't born an orphan? How he was loved? DOESN'T EVEN TRY TO PASS DOWN FUINJUTSU TO THE UZUMAKI HEIR BECAUSE WHAT?! NARUTO'S 'TOO DUMB' or 'Too much of a bother to explain all the backstory why he should know/why I'm teaching it/too much of a bother to teach such a complicated thing' or 'the village doesn't want its jinchuriki to know how its own seal works we'd rather keep that power in our hands' like what. What would even be a good reason he is literally his sensei, and Jiraiya had three years to train him and focused on 'unlocking the seal to make use of more seals' while again not teaching Naruto how the seal worked at all and then once he got a scar from naruto abandoning the plan. Yes, Naruto got proper taijutsu training and training with the toad summons but still. What a waste. I'm still fuming.
~~~
Naruto got failed all the way around by a lot of people and only a few attempted to really and truly make up for it.
Do you have any Trans!Aaron headcanons?
yesss lemme give you some <3
when he was younger and first realised he felt like a boy, he definitely pushed away those thoughts because he figured he didn't have time for it with all the things he had to do in the future (care for his mom and brother, working a shitty job, getting into law school) and he assumed no one would understand or care
i feel like he worked a few jobs as a teen so he could save up enough for testosterone/top surgery/bottom surgery if he wanted that too because he wanted to get them all as soon as possible
he used to bind unsafely bc he had no proper way of doing it :( so it took a while for his ribs/chest to feel okay again after that. he sometimes still gets pains because of how long he did it for when he was a teen/young adult
him being trans is the reason he wears a lot of suits, especially tailored ones, because it makes him look and feel a lot more masculine <3 but as he gets older and has been on t for years, he feels a lot more comfortable wearing casual clothing around his coworkers and in general
he's not out to people, only the ones he's closest too. so haley knew, jessica also knew but that's because they grew up together, and so does sean. jack probably knows, but might not understand properly until he's older, and maybe dave knows too. the rest of the team doesn't.
he's insecure about his top surgery scars which is why he's never seen shirtless or always leaves to change elsewhere and alone. i feel like after foyet stabs him a few times in the stomach, he feels a lil bit less insecure about his top surgery scars because it's not the only scars on his front anymore. but now he's insecure about all the scars because of the memories they hold and he hates the idea of people asking questions or acting like they know what he's been through </3
when there's a case that includes transphobia, he gets really really angry about it. just like jj does when the case involves kids. but the team can't figure out why it affects him so much and why it has him overworking them without even meaning to. he hardly sleeps when he's on those cases, too focused on solving it and getting the asshole in jail, and dave or whoever knows has to prompt him to take care of himself or tell him to take a breather :(
he hates having to tell people. his biggest worry is them seeing and treating him differently. that's why he never wants the team to find out; it keeps him awake some nights when his dysphoria is at its worst and his anxiety about others finding out terrifies him
if penelope found out, probably accidently by looking at his file or maybe walking in on him shirtless, she'd be sooo supportive and promise not to tell anyone and make sure that he knows she's always there for him if he needs someone to talk about it <3
he likes to work out and stay in shape because it makes him feel both healthier and appear more masculine and he likes the way it feels
he likes his hair really short. having it too long makes him dysphoric as hell and he feels nauseous. that's why it's so short sometimes bc he can't handle having it past his ears or long enough to reach his eyebrows
i think that's all i have rn <3 thanks for asking!
Random Hazbin HCs cause I can’t sleep
- The cannibals don’t have eyes because they eat them after they regenerate. Cannibal town works so well because no one actually dies they just take turns being eaten before regenerating. Cannibals are NOT hellborn, rather most of them are victorian folks who indulged in the mummy craze.
- Molly died before angel dust, i think she died in a shooting because of the mafia when they were teens/young adults. Hence why Molly was never really involved in the family business and I think it could also account for Angel’s turn to illicit substances.
- Angel and Husk knew each other in life, maybe even hooked up briefly. Husk is actually the younger of the two but not by a lot.
- Charlie used to have another group of sinner friends but they were all killed in the first extermination.
- Angel and Alastor are the only ones of the main crew who were never married in life.
- Nifty got married her senior year of high school and did her best to be the perfect wife. She had some fertility issues and had mental breakdown, causing her husband and family to have her institutionalized. After a while she escaped and took out her rage on her husband and her older cousin who he was cheating on her with. She ended up setting the house on fire and causing a small explosion in which she lost an eye. However she tried to continue her rampage, going to her parents where her father was the one who shot her down.
- Vaggie was never alive. Rather she was created to care for children souls in heaven before she was recruited to be an exorcist. Part of the reason she became an exorcist was to protect the kids. She was under the impression that all children went to heaven. Though when she went to kill the cannibal kid, she realized she was wrong and the system was far more flawed than she realized.
- Angel was a an overlord under his father for the first few years he was in hell (leaving after he realized that he didn’t need to pretend he wasn’t gay anymore)
- Every so often Charlie locks her self away to cry about the idea of losing all here friends
- Alastor has a very strict moral code when it comes to who he kills. He only kills those who take advantage or abuse of others. Which is why he didn’t kill Husk when he could’ve.
- Nifty and Alastor would tag team Valentino so hard
- Part of the reason Vaggie didn’t put together that Angelic weapons could harm angels is because she thought she had already fallen before her eye was cut out. She thought the mere thought of questioning the system made her fall.
- Valentino has a major superiority complex, so he thinks he’s the one in charge of the Vees when in reality he’s the last person to be consulted on big decisions.
- Vox was a small local news reporter with dreams of going national. Unfortunately that never happened as he was killed by a falling set piece on live, making him more famous in his death than in his life.
- Sir Pentious had two sons when he was alive. One lived well into adulthood, the other died when he was barely a teen from typhoid or some other old timey disease. It’d be the same disease the Pent ends up dying from. Though not before he starts obsessing over how to cure it, his other son continues his work and ends up discovering the vaccine for it.
- Pentious was a snake’s oil salesman for most of his life.
- Nifty had a lobotomy in life
- If others hadn’t been there, the val and charlie would’ve ended much differently(she was ready to kill him before angie stopped her)
- Charlie has tried to cut her hair short(like pixie) multiple times but whenever she loses control of her powers it just grows back, the only loophole for some reason being and undercut or side cut. as long as the hair on the crown of her head is long it’s fine.
- Alastor’s mom was a teen mom; my brain says 13 or 14. Her parents kicked her out after they found out she was pregnant forcing her to become fully dependent on her (now) husband. They had a shotgun wedding and a really tumultuous marriage. His dad left them both when he was 5 or 6. He also isn’t an only child though i’m not sure if he has a younger sibling or older. probably younger.
- Husk’s actual name is Jack, it’s part of his deal with Alastor that his old name was sold to Alastor. Him and anyone who knew him as Jack have completely forgotten it, they know his past but think he’s always been Husk. I’d like to think if he or anyone else rediscovers his name the deal would broken, kind rumplstisken vibes.
- Quite a lot of the sinners had kids in life, most of them assume that their kids ended up in heaven.
- Sir Pentious’ sons did end up in heaven and recognized him instantly and was elated to see his dad after so long.
what about a reader who works for a while with the X-men (they’ve been hiding their appearance for a while) only for them to find out their actually a young teen?
(you can write it any way you like, just curious if the X-men would feel a bit betrayed they were lied to and guilty they sent them on missions?)
Ooooooo... Now, that can go a few ways. They do have teens on the team (depending on the version you prefer), but you said a young team. So, likely someone around the age of Jamie from X-Men Evolution (and maybe Laura? I'm... not really sure what age they meant her to be), maybe a year older? They'd be younger than Evan, who I think? was fifteen. So, let's say they're thirteen/fourteen, and their own vigilante/friendly neighborhood mutant. Let's begin:
Reader had ways wanted to do the right thing. It was sometimes harder than it seemed, and sometimes seemed not worth the effort. Yet... someone had to do it. And the people around them surely weren't.
It started at a young age for them. Complimenting others, asking if they would like to play, sharing their snacks... Others didn't appreciate it much, but they kept trying. They kept forgiving. Reader would tell themself that the people around them likely didn't have the best home life, they could have lost a family member, or could just be annoyed by their efforts at trying to befriend them. Whatever the reason, they did their best to keep up, to stay cheerful... but when a year turns to a few turns to several, a person can get discouraged... especially when you're a mutant.
Their powers came in... pretty earlier, actually. If they remember correctly, they came in after a teacher semi-threatened them, and later in the day they discovered that when faced with too much stress or pressure, their power started to peek through. Which made things a LOT harder. But still, they persisted. Growing up, they didn't have the best relationship with people their age, or adults, or... well, okay, a majority of school. Was that going to stop them from trying to help? No. They just had to be... careful, cautious, was all.
It was weird, hiding their appearance when they stepped into situations that required heroic assistance. But safety (and security!) comes first. Look, they're not even fifteen yet! They don't want some banana nuts person finding out who they are and coming after them! Hiding their face, their arms, their legs, anything about them, became second nature. As a vigilante, they could let their truer self shine, but there would never be a face to them. As their civilian self, they always had to hide everything about them, lest anyone catch on to their secret.
Teaming up with the X-Men had been a new experience.
There had been some weird evil mutant on the loose, Reader was already in the area, they showed up, and after fifteen minutes of arguing, they all teamed up to take them down. And it. Was. Amazing! For once, it felt like they were liked. Taken seriously. And time after time, they kept running into the X-Men, who they tended to team up with. Some of them appeared to be older teens, and at least two of them were adults, a cranky guy who had dagger hands and a weather goddess lady. It was nice, getting to know people like them. People who knew the roughness of the world, yet kept trying. Kept fighting. To do what was right. To do good.
It came crashing down when a new villain almost killed them.
Being pinned, a heavy foot crushing their chest, and a hand tightening around their neck. They were bleeding somewhere, they were pretty sure the bones of one of their feet were broken, and their vision kept blacking out. The villain was choking them to death, and suddenly-
They'd lifted up their mask.
And just-
Watched.
Stared.
As they realized they weren't even as old as the X-Teens.
That moment was cut off when Wolverine tackled the villain, along with Storm sending lightning at them. It was taking everything in Reader to stay awake, at least long enough to find a place to collapse for the rest of the day. But that apparently wasn't in the cards.
"Oh my God..."
"They're just a kid..."
"Friend... vhy did you not tell us?"
Reader can't help but stay silent. These people, their only friends, are upset with them. The only reprieve from their life is now gone. And they feel like their body has been punched (figuratively and literally). "..." They go to leave, doing their best to stagger up and drag themself to a place they can rest... Their legs wobble, then their body collapses. Their breaths are growing more erratic, more wild, as they do their best to keep it together. Something falls on their shoulder, and for a moment, they think they're about to be hurt-
But it's just one of the teens, who's face that a moment ago was upset, is now worried. They say something, but Reader can't make it out... Then everything goes sideways, and they're blacked out.
The X-Men decide to take Reader back with them for medical attention, regardless of how they personally feel. This is still someone who helped them, someone who was younger than they were, and they took a beating that would leave someone with worse than bruising (cr*p cr*p cr*p they're just a KID-). They are also their friend, even if they feel confused and hurt over the fact they weren't honest. A few like Scott and Jean feel hurt they weren't trusted enough to be told their friend's secret, but try to understand they must have had a reason. Kitty and Kurt and Evan feel a little broken up over it, wondering if Reader didn't like them enough, or thought they weren't trustworthy, but they hope they can put it behind them once Reader is well. Rogue can understand where Reader is coming from, as she has hidden a lot before, too. She just hopes it isn't enough to tear them apart. Logan wonders how he didn't catch onto their true age, or the fact they weren't being completely honest, but he knows they were likely scared of something to keep that much from them. From him. And he plans to find out what did so. Storm and Hank are more worried about what scared them enough to hide this from their teammates, their friends, and do their best to keep Reader in stable condition. And the Professor is trying his best to piece together what little they all truly know about Reader...
When Reader wakes up, Logan is by their bedside, having kept watch over them until they woke up. Kitty and Kurt were also there, keeping him company and praying Reader did wake up. And then they say they need to talk... And that a few things are going to change, starting with they're going to be open and honest, and how Reader can do that, too. They're a team, they are friends, and friends can tell friends anything...
back with more for @hprecfest - although i'll be skipping day three because i have the concentration span of a kitten and therefore no chance of making it through a podfic...
day two: favourite comfort fics
two boys kissing by writcraft sirius black/severus snape mature | 6.8k words
why i recommend it:
because I'm a sucker for both sirius and snape getting a happy ending, and this fic delivers this within a beautiful, gentle examination of the horrors of sirius' young adult life and the way that hope and desire are things he clings to during the lonely misery of his confinement in azkaban. the repeated motif of the sky always gets to me:
when he showers, he whistles a song. he’s not sure he knows it’s name, but he can remember strobe lights and the way snape looked when he was as young as sirius can remember him being. that was back in the days when severus tried so hard not to be queer and sirius thought he had everything to live for.
sirius spits out toothpaste into the sink and contemplates himself in the mirror. it looks like there’ll be a thunderstorm tonight. he puts his toothbrush into the glass and moves into the room, poking his head out of the window. the wind has gathered momentum but the sky is clear.
he breathes in the air and watches the stars.
Tumblr media
so bracing by @kellychambliss minerva mcgonagall/severus snape teen | 9.2k words
why i recommend it:
because i love to see older woman/younger man relationships in fandom - there's still far too few of them - and because i love to see fics from the perspective of minor characters, and this, which is as much a careful and generous character study of tom the barman (and the town of skegness) as it is of its central couple never fails to make me smile:
tom took the chance of sitting down again, and when he didn't get tossed out on his arse, he felt a little emboldened. "and you thought you wanted this? life in a muggle pub in skegness?"
snape loaded a glass into a dishpan, and then another. and another.
"my family," he said, just when tom had decided that he probably wasn't going to say anything at all. "my family wasn't one for holidays. it was all my father could do to keep food on the table, once the mills failed. and once the drinking started. but before all that, there was one summer -- spring, actually. may. we couldn't afford high summer season. da somehow saw his way clear to taking my mother and me to the seaside. i was about six. we came here. skegness. we froze our arses off."
"skegness is. . . so bracing," tom murmured, and snape snorted.
"in a word. three days in a grotty little caravan. cheap, greasy food. saw a sad muggle magic show." he loaded more glasses with a crash. "i loved it. fucking loved the lot of it. "
never gonna give you up by @laeveteinn harry potter/lord voldemort teen | 15k words
why i recommend it:
because it makes me shriek. i'm not usually a fan of either professor harry or professor voldemort fics, but it turns out that my exception is when they're forced to work together as a team because harry's newly-divorced and adrift in a world which no longer makes sense and voldemort's a ghost who's obsessed with memes:
“what are you thinking so intently about?” voldemort murmurs. “you mustn’t overtax your brain, it wasn’t meant for hard activity.”
harry snorts. “honestly, i’m just trying to figure out where albus got his bad taste in men. it’s not ginny; lars isn’t actually that terrible.”
and for some reason, voldemort lets out a lengthy sigh.
clay by @titconao3 harry potter & severus snape general | 46k words
why i recommend it:
because i have an unstoppable fondness for the concept of redemption, which is hugely and unfairly maligned in this fandom, and this story is an astonishingly beautiful meditation on the theme, not only in how it approaches both snape and harry as they come to terms with the war and what it has taken from them, but in how it portrays tobias snape and his own reckoning with his past and quest to make amends with his son:
tobias was on a roll. “you lot, always talking about your magic, waving your bloody sticks around like it makes you better than us normal people…” he slammed his hands on the table and severus shuddered, his fists opening and closing around nothing. he’d left his wand in the room; it wasn’t like he could use it, and he had to trust potter could deal with tobias snape. the man was nothing, to a boy who’d faced the dark lord and come out the victor. “you’re not. you’re not! your goddamn magic… we’d have been better off without it, i’m telling you.” severus looked again through the crack and saw tobias with his back turned on potter, his shoulders shaking. he was angry, but not yet taking it out on potter. maybe he was scared of potter’s wand; maybe now that he was sober he was better at keeping his violence in check. either way, severus didn’t trust it would last forever. it never had, before.
to forgive divine by jellybeany neville longbottom/draco malfoy teen | 7.4k words
why i recommend it:
because there are days when you need eighth-year fluff, and this sort of fluff is so rarely given to neville as a central character, but it should be:
he’d wondered if it was something like that, to be honest.
because, because. malfoy was always so interested. he’d read in a fortune cookie once that the opposite of love isn’t hate, it's indifference.
which was a rubbish fortune at the time, but it’s relevant now.
Dick Grayson Reading Guide Part 1: Robin
I got a request to do a Dick Grayson reading guide, so that's what this is. This isn't going to be an exhaustive list of every issue he's in, just stories I think are good and/or important to read to get him. This website is good if you want to know every issue a character has appeared in, at least pre-Flashpoint: https://dcuguide.com/w/Chronologies
These won't be in publication order, but in chronological order for Dick's life. Due to the nature of comics published over many decades, some of these may have minor contradictions or differences in characterization, but they're all worth reading in my opinion. Some of these were unfortunately written by creators who many will not feel comfortable supporting. To that I say, there are ways to find comics second hand, or read without supporting particular creators.
Robin:
Tumblr media
Batman: Dark Victory
This to me is the definitive Dick Grayson origin, though he doesn't show up until the second half of the story. That said, it is one of the best Batman stories ever written, and its version of Robin's origin has been repeated in several other tellings.
Tumblr media
Batman Chronicles: The Gauntlet
This is a nice little one off story, chronicling Dick Grayson's graduation from training. Batman puts him through one last test to see if he is ready to hit the streets as Robin. It also leads very nicely into the next story.
Tumblr media
Batgirl/Robin: Year One
This is actually two stories collected into one trade, with Robin's set first. It chronicles his first year as Robin after running The Gauntlet. Big themes you'll see are Dick and Bruce having a rocky start, and Dick balancing life as a normal kid with life as a vigilante. Alfred narrates, and offers a lot of introspection on whether being Robin is really good for Dick. Batgirl's story takes place next, and while Babs is the main character, Robin plays a major part in getting Bruce to accept her into their war on crime.
Tumblr media
Teen Titans: Year One
This is the story of the first time the Titans met and teamed up, and shows their growing pains. It illustrates what each member brings to the table, shows the difference in their relationships to their mentors, and shows the difference between Robin with Batman and Robin with the Titans. Bruce comes off a little harsh in this one, which some might find off-putting, but I think it makes sense for his character. He's protective, and not particularly good at communicating.
Tumblr media
The New Teen Titans
This is the oldest book on the list, and a classic. If you're fond of the 2003 Teen Titans cartoon, this comic was the blueprint for it. It tells the story of the reformed team when they're all about 19 years old. At this point, Dick has dropped out of college and is at odds with Batman. His leadership of the Titans provides him with even more opportunities for growth and independence, and eventually he sheds the identity of Robin to become Nightwing, in The Judas Contract (about 40 issues in). You can stop reading after The Judas Contract if you just want to see Dick's last days as Robin and transition to Nightwing.
Extras if you want more:
Tumblr media
Lost Carnival: A Dick Grayson Graphic Novel
This is a nice young adult graphic novel that tells a story about Dick when he was still in the circus. The art is phenomenal, and this story shows that Dick already had a lot of the foundations of Robin, and Nightwing, before ever having met Bruce. His parents are actual characters too, which is nice. Dick is slightly older in this than he normally is before his parents die, and it isn't really canon, but it is good.
Tumblr media
Robin & Batman
This three issue series is essentially a different take on Robin's first year. It could or couldn't be canon, it's a little vague. Some readers will be turned off by how militaristic Bruce is, and how angry Dick is. However, I think these are both accurate representations of how they would have acted in their earliest days as a team. Bruce wants to be a good mentor, but doesn't know how yet, and Dick is still grieving the loss of his parents. The art is also phenomenal.
Tumblr media
Year One: Batman/Scarecrow
This story takes place during Bruce and Dick's early days, but they are a well-oiled team by this point. It chronicles their first encounter with Scarecrow, and has a lot of cute moments between Bruce and Dick. Not required reading, but absolutely a fun one.
Tumblr media
Batman One Bad Day: Mr. Freeeze #1
This is the most recent comic on the list, and a very interesting issue. It showcases an encounter between Batman & Robin and Mister Freeze during Robin's early days. It isn't their first time meeting, but Robin is young during this story. It's set around Christmas, and is a wonderful character study of not just Freeze, but also the difference between Robin and Batman, and how Robin brings light to Batman's mission.
Tumblr media
Batman/Superman: World's Finest #6
This is a single issue of Mark Waid and Dan Mora's wonderful 2022 series, that focuses heavily on Robin. Technically it picks up where the previous five issues had left off, but all you need to know is that Robin has been lost in time and Batman and Superman have to find him. It's a great showcase of Dick's skills as an older Robin, and features beautiful art by Travis Moore, using Mora's amazing Robin redesign. Fans of Dick's time in the circus should especially check this out.
Tumblr media
Robin: The Bronze Age Omnibus
This will likely be the least approachable for some readers, simply due to its age. The Bronze Age omnibus contains a selection of Dick's stories as Robin from the 1970s, while he was in college. It is a product of its time, in that Dick's college experience is VERY 1970s, and concerned with the issues of the time. I think it's a wonderful lead-up to The New Teen Titans, showing Dick striking out on his own as an adult crimefighter, over ten years before Nightwing was even conceptualized.
For those wishing for even more Robin content, I would point you in the direction of the Batman Golden and Silver Age omnibuses, the World's Finest Silver Age omnibuses, and the Teen Titans Silver Age Omnibuses.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I hope you found this list helpful, and I will begin working on a Nightwing reading guide soon.
I’ve only ever “shipped” characters in two programs I’ve watched. The first one was Niles and Daphne from Frasier, when I was a teen/young twenty something, and Ted and Rebecca from Ted Lasso.
These two pairings could not be more different. Niles was smitten from the start with Daphne, despite being married (!) with seemingly everyone clued in except Daphne herself for seven years (!!) until Frasier blurts it out to her. Only then does she start to view Niles as someone she might love. The Frasier writers had all the tropes on display for this one. Ah, the 90s.
Looking back now as a much older adult, I see glaring red flags in the Niles and Daphne pairing. The man was married, not once but twice, while claiming to be in lust/love with Daphne. Young me didn’t care though. I thought – romance! And when they ran off together, I was smitten. My one and only delve into fanfiction I wrote in 2000 when they both took off in the Winnebago. Oh my. With the benefit of hindsight, I wonder just how much I’d ship those two these days. Now if Frasier were to be remade the creators would have made the Niles character what he should have been all along, which is gay. The early 90s you just couldn’t do that, although the Frasier team loved to give a wink to it at times.
For Ted and Rebecca, I’ve mentioned before that I didn’t ship them in season 1 and most of season 2 at all. I thought this was simply a lovely friendship and that’s that. It was only the writers’ little bantr fakeout that clued me in on the possibility. I knew it wasn’t Ted, but it got me thinking when it was revealed to be Sam and I was disappointed it wasn’t Ted. Why was I disappointed? Then looking back at the earlier episodes and seeing all the ways they cared for one another and seemed to be clued in to each other. I thought – aha! This is the way to go about a real relationship. Show the friendship. Show the trust. Show each other at your best and your worst. It’s not a fantasy. I never minded that there were no obvious longing looks between the two because I saw all those signs the writers put into the show that kept pointing back (for me) to only one conclusion: Ted and Rebecca were meant to be together. The two obviously long for a romantic relationship and are deeply loving people. It wouldn’t be lazy writing! It would be brilliant to have it slowly evolve into a beautiful relationship built on friendship.
My only sticking point on the two getting together was the fact that at the end of the day, Rebecca was still Ted’s boss. Having grown up in the same region at the same time as Ted, I figured his midwestern values would deem that as unethical and therefore a deal breaker, no matter how deep the attraction was. I figured Ted would always choose his son and want to go back to Kansas, but I also concluded he would still need someone else in his life and not make Henry his sole reason to live. That’s too much of a burden on Henry. So if there were some way to have Ted be with Henry and Rebecca not be his boss… There have been some wonderful fics written to show how these two could still manage that feat. Both Ted and Rebecca are wealthy – with Rebecca shown to be “filthy” rich. Miss “I’ll just buy the restaurant” could make just about anything happen.
It all seems like a hell of a missed opportunity. I believe Jason was so enamored of the movie “Once” that he wanted to make his own version. That’s fine – it was his show. I just wish maybe they would have thought more about why they needed to do some of these little fakeouts. Having read some of the writers and editors’ responses this past week I have concluded that while some of this was purely accidental, the vast majority was absolutely intentional to keep the incredibly loyal and vocal fanbase (the shippers) coming back for more. They knew exactly what they were doing. I’m not naïve; I get that it is a product, and they need eyes viewing said product. But this show was a huge hit from day one when many of us didn’t give a damn about the pairing. Why go to these lengths?
What is hilarious to me is what we’ve been given instead of the well thought out relationship is the very definition of lazy writing: throwing Rebecca with some random man we’ve seen ONE TIME in the last season. We don’t even know his name. Yes, he is attractive and clearly Rebecca enjoyed being around this man. I even said after the ep aired that I wouldn’t mind it, but I was hoping there would be more buildup between the last time we saw him and now. And unlike above with Ted, boat man has not seen Rebecca at her worst, nor she his. It does not feel earned at all and that just pisses me off.
Don’t even get me started on Beard and Jane. Jesus that’s a topic for another post.
Okay, another few questions:
1, how old were the original five X-Men at their introduction? 2, how old were they (OG team) when Banshee and the other "new X-Men" joined Cyclops in stopping Krakoa? And 3, how old were the original five when M-Day happened?
Sorry, these are details I just want to know for myself. Hope you don't mind the questioning, and keep up the good work!
According to [Uncanny] X-Men #1, Bobby Drake was sixteen when the team made its public debut. Furthermore he describes himself as a "couple" of years younger than his friends. We also know that Hank is somewhat older than Scott, Warren, and Jean. So, the short answer to your first question is: Bobby is 16, Warren, Scott, and Jean are 18, and Hank is probably 18 or 19.
It's not specifically clear whether Bobby is literally two years younger, or if "couple" is being used in a more figurative sense. I think it's safe to take at face value though, given that he is clearly presented as a member of their age cohort (along with Lorna and Alex); is meant to be reasonably close to the same age as Peter Parker and Johnny Storm (who should also be in the same general range as the original X-Men, as they were all teenagers at the same time); and lastly when Claremont revived the X-Men publication years later, Bobby was depicted as now comfortably a young adult, finishing up his accounting degree, at the same time that Jean was dealing with her first job drama, and Warren was off with the family business.
I also think it's safe to guess Hank is no more than a year older than the others. He's treated as a peer of his teammates rather than as a helper to the Professor, and seems comfortable as a member of the group even outside of X-Men training. Hank's more advanced academic pursuits with respect to his teammates are also shown to be a product of his intelligence and not simply him being in a more senior class, which I think furthermore point to him being loosely their age.
Later authors have occasionally given different ages to the first team, or at least to Scott. Bendis, who wrote them for the longest, identifies the younger Scott as sixteen when he first comes face to face with his modern counterpart (Uncanny X-Men volume 3 no. 12). In Matt Fraction's inexplicably titled Dark Avengers/Uncanny X-Men: Exodus, Scott gives a televised speech in which he claims to have joined the X-Men at age 15. And in Stuart Moore's X-Men Origins Cyclops, Scott is shown to have first met Charles when he was 17 (which works), but he also dates X-Men #1 as taking place when Scott was 21 (which contradicts every other version of the story).
I think it makes the most sense to just go with the original story, and take 18 as the team's median age. I think you could also just as well argue that the 15-17 number isn't in contradiction per se, but only reflects Scott's age when Charles started training him, or even when he first became Cyclops, and not his age in X-Men #1 when Jean joined the team and they confronted Magneto for the first time.
I know some fans also feel that the Bendis' run discounts the possibility that they're in their late teens, because he writes them so young, but I think that's kind of ridiculous. Bendis writes everyone like that, and in any case people are basically the same at 14 as they are at 34, so how much more mature does anyone get from 16 to 18, really?
I think having them remain (mostly) at 18+ is the most plausible reading of the original run, and the most consistent with their general dislike of Charles recruiting actual child soldiers in later classes, and as well with Marvel's editorial policy that the X-Men have existed for ten years in-universe in perpetuity and are now just shy of 30.
Second question: Their ages later on, when the All-New, All-Different team first formed aren't given directly, but they're easy to work out.
Tumblr media
So, at time of first death, Jean was 24ish depending on when her birthday falls in the year. Scott and Warren are the same age, Bobby is two years younger, and Hank is probably around 1 year older.
How much time passes between Jean's introduction to Storm, Thunderbird, Wolverine, Banshee, etc and her death isn't specified, and during his first run, Claremont tried to maintain a pretense of everything occurring in real time, but already it had started to become untenable and can't be trusted.
At the time of Jean's death, the core Claremont trio of Storm, Wolverine, and Nightcrawler are still very early in getting to know each other as people, despite spending a lot of time together on page. So I think it's very likely that only a few months have passed between the new recruits joining the team and when Jean died and the remaining original X-Men make their departure. So I would just treat the Dark Phoenix Saga as taking place in the same year as the first mission to Krakoa, with Jean/Scott/Warren remaining 24 throughout.
Third question: To get to their ages at M-Day, I need to do something cataclysmically stupid. Something that I always tell everyone to never do when talking about the X-Men: I have to talk about how old Kitty Pryde was. She who has had three separate, non consecutive, fifteenth birthdays; and she who, famously, began the 1990s three years older than Jubilee, but still managed to end the decade two years younger than her. But, for once, bringing her into things is going to make everything else make more sense.
In X-Treme X-Men we're told directly that Kitty joined the X-Men five years ago. This is useful to know, because she joined the team on the exact same day that Jean died, so it has also been 5 years since that happened. X-Treme X-Men takes place at the same time as New Mutants volume 2, later to be relaunched as New X-Men: Academy X, which documents the first academic year of the Xavier School post its outing as a mutant boarding school. The two books ran parallel to one another and reference the same events in the lives of the original New Mutants.
Academy X concludes during the House of M crossover itself, and with the depiction of the typical US/Canadian school dances, and the inclusion of a year book issue, I think it's reasonable to conclude that the entire Academy X era takes place over about one full school year. So adding that together, M-Day should fall around 6 years after Jean's first death, making her, Scott, and Warren around 29-30, Hank 30-31, and Bobby 27-28.
If you want corroboration while also having the chance to experience a desperate urge to kick something, here's a cropped out section of the House of X/Powers of X timeline.
Tumblr media
My version has a type mistake, where years 49 and 50 were incorrectly reversed. Genosha should be year 50, and Moira's "death" at 49. (IIRC later print editions fixed this) M-Day and Decimation would happen in year 51. The Year 47 event references the storyline beginning in Jim Lee's X-Men #1, and so the formation of the Claremont X-Men would likely be in Year 45 or 46. Scott and co being 30ish at Year 52, and working backwards...It actually all kind of lines up?
Which I hate! I hate that it works. It forces you to accept that everything after M-Day occurs over the course of just one single year. And it's so annoying that it's actually kind of possible, when you remember how much everyone loved decompressed storytelling in those days, and subsequently how almost nothing actually happened for a decade and a half of comics. But still! That's so ridiculous! Why do they do this!
Hope that helps! Thanks for the ask.
Do you have any post about didio's hatred of legacy characters? I forget if that was an actual stated thing or if it was just assumed. I vaugely recall him hating Dick Grayson specifically.
I don't have any posts, but here's the shorter version of a better-sourced post I might make about it some day:
Dan Didio notoriously disdains legacy characters, particularly ones which have eclipsed their earlier gen mentor figures in popularity (see: Wally West). He USUALLY will not say this outright in interviews; you have to read between the lines between what he's saying and not saying. But the sentiment is obvious for anyone who does read between those lines, and people around him have talked about his general dislike of legacies on multiple occasions.
The long-and-short of it is that he feels that legacies, particularly ones who were allowed to grow up and become their own independent heroes like the Fab 5, make the "originals" look old and outdated. He doesn't like that legacies inherently age older heroes and make them more mature, and he doesn't like that the story of a legacy is inherently about growing up and either accepting or rejecting what your mentor has taught you. A fully grown, independent, and successful Nightwing makes Batman look old, which he can't stand. Likewise, a Wally West who has taken Barry's place as Flash and eclipsed him in pop culture popularity makes Barry irrelevant in his mind.
He also has very weird and frankly wrong conceptual issues with legacies taking over their mentor's mantles; he thinks it makes them "too similar" to their mentors and unable to stand on their own as characters (this is his core issue with Wally, for some reason). He has a special dislike of Dick Grayson and is notorious for wanting him killed off in Infinite Crisis, which writers like Mark Waid and Geoff Johns have talked about before and Didio himself has commented on:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
His dislike of Dick in particular exists for a lot of reasons, but there are two main issues that pop up again and again during interviews: he thinks Nightwing ages Batman too much (which he hates)...and he thinks a "happy Batman is the end of Batman."
Dick tends to be the focus of his ire because he was the first legacy hero, the first of Bruce's children, and has been the second most successful breakout legacy character at DC Comics (with the first being Wally), but there's a part of me that thinks he hates the concept of the Batfamily more than he dislikes any singular legacy Bat hero given his various editorial edicts (not letting Batcat get married, not letting Kate and Maggie get married, erasing most of the Batfam during the New 52, ordering Lobdell to write the Ric arc, etc). He doesn't think heroes should have happy personal lives (Batman least of all) and to Didio, having grown and successful children who have succeeded beyond Bruce's wildest dreams counts.
Ultimately, he's a 62-year-old fanboy who does not want to move beyond the Silver Age. He wants his heroes and favorite teams to remain just as they were in the 70s, when he was a kid. He doesnt like characters to mature and grow as adults, he wants teen characters to stay teenagers forever, and he wants his heroes to have sucky personal lives and ruined relationships because he thinks it makes them more relatable. Happy hero families with successful legacy characters undermines those desires. I'm glad he's no longer in charge of DC Comics.
To preface this, I’m going to be talking about growing up in a really generalised way, it’s not meant to be read as a critique of people or as prescriptivist. It’s just an overall framework, from my own point of view.
I think that growing up, graduating from childhood into adulthood, has less to do with age and more to do with personal experience. Because when it comes down to it I think that what’s most critical in the difference between an adult and an adolescent is that adults tend to put a lot more thought into our decision making process.
That’s NOT to say “Oh dumb teenagers don’t think about stuff.” Instead, I mean that those of us with more life experience have more experience of failure. Tend to be more aware of what failure means, in practical, real world terms. We’ve seen and felt and had to find solutions to the consequences of our actions, and through doing so we’ve learned not only how to mitigate those consequences, but also ... which decisions we absolutely do not want to repeat. We more appreciate and value the experience of peace and calm and stability because we’ve had our fill of chaos and the discomfort and pain that comes with it. And so when we make any kind of life choice we’re more likely to really think it through based on what consequences we can REALLY tollerate dealing with, what risks we can REALLY accept. And we learned that by ... fucking around and finding out.
The yellowjacket teens are really showing that process in full swing, and I think it’s such a big part of what I love about it.
Shauna, pre-crash, had unprotected sex with Jeff. She knew, logically, that there was a chance that this could lead to pregnancy. But it was a very ... theoretical, vague kind of knowledge. In the same way that you know, in theory, that if you don’t wear a seatbelt you might die in a crash. It was a bad decision on her part (no judgement but it was) which could’ve been easily mitigated, if only the reality of the consequences were more clear to her. Post-stillbirth Shauna is going to be radically different. To her the consequences are VERY clear, very real, very personal. If she were transported back to that night with Jeff she’d not have done it, even if she didn’t know for SURE what was going to happen, where they’d end up. She’d just have a deeper conception of what consequences REALLY look like, in practice. What a choice that you cannot take back really feels like.
Misty smashed the flight recorder, potentially dooming the entire team. Whether or not that’s why they’re not being rescued is irrelevant, it’s what she believes. She did it on the first day, in a very emotionally fragile and intense situation. This was a TERRIBLE fucking choice, but ... she didn’t think it through. She couldn’t have, fundamentally, understood what she was doing. Because the consequences again were so theoretical, so vague. And because she was running on a high of perceived competency, she was sure that she’d help them all out, be a hero. She might well have thought that she was just delaying rescue, that at some point they’d work it out and she’d just be a big hero. The true consequences of her action only begin to really hit months afterwards. When Laura Lee died, when Jackie did too, then Crystal and now the baby... Misty knows it’s all her fault. And the blood is literally on her hands. Things are only going to get worse from here, and this Misty, this 9 months older version, covered in blood and full of guilt, wouldn’t have smashed the box. Given the choice she’d have gone back and undone it. But she can’t. Sometimes we make choices that have HORRIFIC consequences, and then all we can do is survive them, and hopefully learn from them. That’s what growth IS. We learn from mistakes, but that doesn’t mean that those mistakes are any less disastrous.
I think this is fundamentally what the yellowjacket adults are missing. Their refusal to acknowledge and process their past - and the decisions they made and the consequences that came of them - robs them of the capacity to learn from those choices. They’re stunted in their growth, frozen in place. For all their extra years in so many ways they still haven’t grown up. Instead they’ve all built coping mechanisms to hold their trauma and pain so they can pretend to function as well as possible and hide the fact that they’re all so ... stuck.
And a large part of that really comes down, I feel, to guilt. They’re making a fundamental mistake where they’re judging the actions of their younger selves by their current realities. Shauna cannot realistically relate to pre-crash Shauna anymore, and cannot understand - or forgive - herself for her irresponsibility. Misty is so full of self-hatred and guilt, blames herself for everything, she can’t possibly look at that tiny version of herself with compassion and understanding and say “You fucked up so bad, but I won’t because you did.” They’re putting the consequences of their choices before the decision making which is a really common error people have when they regret things. They make a choice that goes badly, then they regret the choice because of what happened afterwards. But if it had worked out - even if it was STILL a bad choice - they wouldn’t regret it. And they can’t acknowledge or appreciate that error because they’re not processing or analyzing their choices properly, which is keeping them stranded in time.
As an adult it is SO hard to look back at a younger you with compassion and care, to say “Oh, look at you screwing up, don’t worry you’ll learn not to be so hurt. You’ll learn how to find your stride.” And I say that having NOT actually gotten lots of people killed or eaten my friends in the wilderness. I’m not exactly proud of many of the choices I made, but I can only imagine how much harder it’d be with their level of guilt and trauma, to say “It’s okay, I was a kid, what’s done is done and all I can do is do better.”
Here's a fun AU idea I had.
There's a theory that Marc is Adrien and Marinette's daughter from the future. I never liked that idea but it got me thinking.
What about an AU where Nathaniel and Marc are time-traveling teens from the future. They assist Bunnyx (Future Alyx) in keeping history in order, and are sent to present day Paris to watch over the future leaders of the Miraclous Team.
I'd love to hear little headcanons and ideas about our time-traveling boyfriends.
Anyone ever see Best Friends Whenever? Well, we got Boyfriends Whenever. Instead of holding hands, they kiss
It takes them a while to figure that out when they accidentally jump ten years into the future
Marc: We just need to think back to before!
Nathaniel: Still here.
Marc: Back to before!
Nathaniel: Not working.
Marc: Back to before!
Nathaniel: Let’s make out.
When solving two separate time anomalies at the hospital they were born in, Fluff did some stuff, and now they can travel forwards and backwards through time
When she hears about this, Bunnyx meets up with them at their school and introduces herself with an offer
All they need to do is assist her in her time travel mission by keeping an eye on the future memebers of the Miraculous Team fifteen years ago
Nathaniel: So, are we gonna meet young you?
Bunnyx: Yes.
Nathaniel: … Do you remember meeting us?
Bunnyx: I won’t until you travel back.
Marc: But, what happens to us? Will there be older version of us here since we’re back in the past?
Bunnyx: No, because you’ll return to your proper timeline depending at the end of the day so you can catch up on all schoolwork and such.
Nathaniel: What if someone wants to come over our houses?
Bunnyx: We will work that all out!
Bunnyx makes sure to tell them all about present day slang, what to wear, and which celebrity is in or not
When they get to the past, they are not all that impressed
Nathaniel: They still have guns? How primitive.
Marc: It’s so warm here. And that woman is actually driving. With her hands on the wheel!
Nathaniel: Rainbow… The car has wheels.
Marc: Ugh. I forgot how backwards people are here.
Thanks to some help from Bunnyx, they are now exchange students at DuPont, but they’re in separate classes
During study hall, they stop time and go over what’s happened so far. Turns out, almost all of Nathaniel’s classmates are all members of the Miraculous Team
Oh, and his teacher is a criminal in the future
Along with traveling through and stopping time, they can create time loops
They only do those when they want to relive a good day and see what they can change about it, also to mess with some bullies over and over
And since they’re watching over a bunch of irresponsible kids who are the future of Paris, they go back in time A LOT
Marc: Pothole on your right. Stay off your phone, Alya.
Nathaniel: Max, if you pour that chemical, you will go blind. If you pour that one, you’ll lose your taste.
Marc: Nino, put on your fucking headphones before you go deaf, I will not tell you again.
Nathaniel: I will not hesitate calling the cops if you continue to stalk Adrien. Neither will that girl over there who has a clear view of you trying to climb over the manor walls. Also, give him his damn phone back. Oh, wait. *Holds up Adrien’s phone*
They’re beginning to question if the students cut out for hero work
They make sure to keep close eyes on Chloé, Lila, and Marinette. Especially Marinette because a superhero is stalking someone?
When they’re not facepalming every time they’re around the Akuma Class, they’re visiting their parents back when they were young adults
And since they’re from the future, they know all of the trends before any self-acclaimed fashionista
Just for the hell of it, they travel forward to look at answers for tests and quizzes and knock them out of the way. They’ve already got schoolwork in their own timelines, they don’t need the pile-ons
When they stop time, Nathaniel likes to mess with Gabriel
not so nice surprise
jj’s mum comes to visit but it doesn’t go to plan
Tumblr media
The doorbell rang and Emily slid from under a sleeping JJ on the sofa. The small girl had been fussy and rather young today. Emily didn’t mind too much as a younger JJ was a lot easier to settle than an older JJ.
Emily opened the door, without looking and her jaw dropped.
“Emily!” JJ’s mother cheered. She let herself into the house, pulling her suitcase behind her. “It’s so nice to see you again lovely!” She pulled Emily into a hug and Emily was in too much shock to say anything. This woman’s daughter was currently in the room over, dressed like a toddler with her tutu, pull up and baby grow and her hair in plaits and a paci in her mouth - a bottle hanging from her hand.
“Sandy!” Emily managed to say, making sure to keep hold of JJ’s mother so she didn’t go looking for her daughter. “What a nice surprise!”
“Where’s JJ?” she asked and Emily cringed.
“She’s just gone to the bathroom, would you like a coffee?” Emily kept hold of Sandy’s arm and walked her through the house to the kitchen. She was being as noisy as possible to try and wake up JJ and give her a hint.
“Oh yes, a coffee would be lovely. Thank you.”
JJ began to stir at the sound of voices and grew very confused. Firstly, her mama wasn’t where she was meant to be - beneath her. Secondly, they had no guests coming around. Rolling off the sofa and landing with a gentle thump, she looked around the room. She could hear her mama in the kitchen and she listened carefully for the other person. If it was one of the team then she didn’t mind but anyone else - why would she have let anyone else in? Then she heard it, her mother's voice.
She froze, why on earth would Emily let her in? Her mother of all people? Scrambling to her feet, she headed out of the living room and up the stairs to change. Emily heard her and relaxed- knowing JJ understood.
“Was that JJ?” Sandy asked, turning on her chair.
“Oh yeah, she’ll be in a minute. I’m sure. We weren’t expecting you!” Emily knew what was coming. Her phone began blowing up with texts and she excused herself, pretending it was her work.
‘Why on Earth is my mum here?!?!?!’ the text read.
‘I don’t know!’ Emily replied.
‘Get rid of her!’
‘I can't! Come here, it'll be fine.’
A few minutes later, Emily heard JJ stomping down the stairs and groaned. This was not adult JJ, this was angry, triggered, upset teen JJ.
“Jennifer!” Sandy cheered as her daughter entered the room and JJ gave her a large, fake smile.
“Mum!” She replied sarcastically.
“It’s great to see you, darling! How have you been? You’ve not been answering my calls.”
“Works been immense,” JJ groaned. She walked over to the fridge, barging past Emily and opened it. She took out an energy drink, knowing full well she wasn’t allowed them in teen headspace. Emily took it off her just as she opened it and began to pour it down the sink and JJ threw up her arms. As much as Emily knew how JJ’s mum made her feel, she was yet to experience temper tantrums and meltdowns with her. Sandy knew of JJ’s regression but never really mentioned it, leaving it to her daughter.
After about twenty minutes of general chat between the three of them (and attitude from JJ, which was ignored), Sandy stood up. Emily and JJ both got their hopes up, thinking she was leaving but then she grabbed JJ’s arm.
“How about we go for some ice cream? Your favourite shop has been renovated!”
“Not without Emily,” JJ grumbled, shooting her mama a look. No matter what headspace JJ was in, no matter how angry she was or annoyed with Emily she was, Emily was her ultimate comfort.
“I was hoping I could take my daughter out for some quality time,” Sandy sighed.
“Not without Emily. You can have quality time with us both,” JJ grumbled, beginning to play with her hands. She really didn’t want to leave Emily - not feeling this fragile.
“I wanted to talk to you about some personal things,” Sandy tried again and JJ moved away from her mother who was only getting closer to her. She went to stand near Emily, hoping the older girl's presence will comfort her.
“I tell her everything you tell me anyway, might as well do it in front of her,” JJ groaned, trying her hardest not to shout at her mum.
“Jennifer…” her mum warned and Emily watched JJ close her eyes and fists super tight.
“I said not without Emily,” JJ said through her teeth.
“And I said I want to spend time alone with you.”
“I said no!” JJ screamed then, bursting. Emily grabbed her waist, making sure she didn’t go to hurt her mum.
“Don’t you dare shout at me like that young lady!” Sandy replied, holding up a finger.
“Listen to me then,” JJ groaned, falling back into Emily’s arms.
“God you’re just like your sister,” Sandy grumbled, grabbing her handbag.
“What? What was that?” JJ didn’t like anyone bad-mouthing her sister, especially her mother.
“You’re just as stubborn and argumentative as her!” Sandy replied, walking towards the door. “With all of this stupid self-destructive behaviour!” She added, picking up one of JJ’s little toys and throwing it back down. Emily felt JJ begin to shake under her hold so held her a little bit tighter.
“Maybe we’d be better if we had a decent mother!” JJ screamed. Since Emily wouldn’t let go of her, she picked up a nearby glass and launched it in her mum’s direction. Sandy screeched and moved out of the way.
“Sandy I suggest you leave,” Emily said simply, wrapping her arms entirely around the quivering blonde girl in her arms.
“She’s my daughter I can handle her,” Sandy grumbled, straightening up her back.
“Sandy this is my house and I’m telling you to get out!” Emily said with more authority. JJ was thrashing in her arms and Emily was struggling to hold her.
“You’re a worthless mother!” JJ screamed at her and Sandy paused, eyes wide, staring at her daughter. JJ was thrashing, crying and hitting at Emily but Emily seemed to hold her with ease - as if it was common. Sandy didn’t move though, just watched her daughter scream and cry and Emily knew there was no point fighting with both.
Emily slid herself and JJ to the floor, away from most of the destructive things in the kitchen.
“Off! Get off me!” JJ cried, trying to free herself but now in a better position, Emily had her arms and legs wrapped around the young girl. “I’m angry!” JJ screamed, beginning to sob.
“I know baby,” Emily whispered. She held JJ’s head against her chest. “It’s okay to feel like this but you need to take some deep breaths.”
“I- I can-t” JJ cried, gripping Emily’s t-shirt.
“You can baby, you’re okay.” Emily continued stroking JJ’s hair, moving it from her face so the wispy bits didn’t irritate her. Sandy moved round the counter to see them both. JJ, a mess, cradled in Emily’s arms. JJ’s head was hiding in EMily’s chest, so she didn’t see her but Emily ignored the older woman. Emily began to sing softly and as JJ stopped fighting, Emily rocked them softly from side to side. She closed her eyes and put her head on her baby’s.
“Is - is she okay?” Sandy asked after a few more minutes of watching the pair. JJ’s breathing had settled down and Emily knew she was falling asleep.
“She’s fine now,” Emily whispered. She looked up at Sandy who had tears streaming down her face. “Leave, please.” Sandy nodded and grabbed her bag, she headed out of the kitchen and out of the door. Emily heard it shut and sighed heavily, holding the small girl in her arms tighter.
An hour later and little, little JJ was playing in her bedroom. She was laying on her back, arms and legs flailing as she interacted with the hanging toys above her. She hadn’t said a word since her mum left and Emily wasn’t expecting her to. Completely nonverbal and very young, Emily had to use her caregiver instincts to help her baby but she didn’t mind. It had been a stressful day for them both and Emily had a bath running.
“Hello my precious,” Emily chuckled, sitting beside JJ on her mat. JJ grumbled in reply, looking at her with a glimmer of innocence in her eyes. “Shall we get you all ready for a bath?” Emily said with enthusiasm and rubbed circles on JJ’s belly. Emily put her in a sleeping suit once she’d calmed down, to help her with her headspace. JJ kicked her legs happily and smiled up at Emily and Emily chuckled. She began to get JJ undressed.
She set the young girl in the bath and instantly JJ began giggling, splashing around amongst the bubbles and kicking her legs with excitement. Looking after JJ was challenging sometimes, often exhausting but moments like this - when Emily knew that there wasn’t a single negative thought in her simple little mind and knowing that JJ trusted Emily with her entire being was something so so special and made everything worth it.
