MAG 195: Off to a great start, what with playing Jon's trauma at the front gates! Also, really nice and chill ep, tho I'm sure the fandom was on tender hooks waiting to find out more about how Martin was doing.

nope. nope do not like that. FUCK the Web. What a reveal on the tapes though, it completely recontextualizes everything.

MAG 197: Well, this is very horrifying. Glad Martin had his chance to be gagged. Now both Jon and Martin have gagging related trauma! 

So Jon, how you enjoying how many strands of the web are attached to you? Fuck. This episode.

For a now more put together reaction: otherwise known as the bits that didn’t quite make it. 

Really enjoyed Basira and Jon meeting up on the way to get Martin. It was actually rather pleasant to see Basira treating Jon better now that she doesn’t view him as something different from herself. Not to say there aren’t still problems there, but that was the nicest episode I’ve gotten to sit through in awhile.

Now, the big ones: MAG 196 and 197. Gotta say, rather amusing listening to Martin’s aggrieved bitching as him and Anabelle went on their merry way to Hill Top Road. What I will say, is that he called Annabelle’s ultimatum “blackmailing”. I’m not quite sure I agree? Or at least, it’s not traditional blackmailing anyways, where the collateral is some secret about the victim. It’s more like she held the information hostage, but then again same difference I guess. 

But yeah, the Web makes me feel so skeevy. Like, most in relation to what Jon had to go through, but also Martin being somewhat web aligned before his descent into the Lonely (well other than his masterful manipulation of Peter before it backfired on him in 159). Mostly, it’s the blatant undertones throughout both these episodes where all the little details are what make it even more horrifying the more you think about it. Like, end of 195 you hear the tape that “greets” Jon and Basira is the one where Jon gave his Statement about his encounter with the Web when he was a child. MAG 196 has all these little references and nods to spiders catching flies and acting like the spider has all the information and that there will be no choices outside of the Web’s purview. 197 is staged on a literal web of Statements related to the Fears. 

Like, ok, that last one is really fucking with me right? I mean, I knew that the Web was in charge of the tapes already. What I somehow hadn’t realized yet was the deeper implications of it. Did Jonah Magnus choose Jon because of the Web Mark? Yes. Why? Because the Web does not Mark people that are not possibly advantageous to it’s plans. Or more likely people that it has the best chance of subtly maneuvering, whatever the reason. THUS, Magnus made the jump in logic that the Web probably knew he was gunning for a successful Ritual, and if it was sending someone his way that wasn’t an Avatar but someone who had already started the supernatural BINGO sheet, then he should take advantage of that. Similarly, the Web probably knew that it’s best bet to survive an apocalypse would be to send a Web Marked individual towards the Institute so it could keep an eye on them through the tapes and begin weaving it’s escape in one fell swoop. It truly could have been anyone web marked honestly, but in this case the first try was the successful one, and Jon played into both Entities perfectly.

But can you imagine? Your boyfriend has wandered off of his own free will with the only person in the entire apocalypse who you cannot actually see what they’re doing and you have no idea what she wants; and then when you get to where he’s being used as bait you find out that almost your entire life was inadvertently used in service to the Web. You find out that your tapes, which have both caused you extreme strife and save the only memories of your lost friends on them, are part of a metaphysical web binding all of the Fears together to your voice; the thing which was used to drag them into the physical world in the first place. You find out that the lighter you keep forgetting about has been subtly manipulating you through your addiction to smoking since the day you got it, and that if you think about it too hard you might start realizing how many things were pressuring you to do things you might not have done if you didn’t have the extra influence. 

You find out that your only “choices” are to either doom your entire world to a faster apocalypse and genocide every last living thing in existence or to potentially doom uncountable other worlds with innumerable numbers of people in them to the same exact “choice” at some point in their own futures. 

And all of this is dumped on you after you’ve found out the only person you believe you can trust has “betrayed” you and gone to the enemy on his own to get gift wrapped and used as leverage while you find out your entire life was a lie. Do y’all understand why I’m foaming at the mouth rn? I’m going insane and rabid and I’m fucking finishing this damn podcast tomorrow and I dunno if I’m going to survive.

Summary: This is a soulmate! au where you can’t hurt your soulmate. The reader is Spider-woman! (thanks to @silverwolf7850 for the help xx)

The night you met your soulmate, or DareDevil as he called himself, was something else. The awkward silence was almost unbearable as you got the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen out of your webbing. What could you even say to make this situation better? 

Hi, my name is Y/N and I just tried to beat the shit out of you…my soulmate.

You giggled at that, causing the Devil to turn his head to the side. He looked kind of like a puppy when he did that. Pushing your thoughts aside, you helped the man away from the concrete wall. 

“Look-” 

“No.” The Devil began to walk away. 

“I didn’t even say anything” You waved your arms comically in the air. 

The Devil turns back towards you, closing you back into the wall of the alley. You could feel his breath on your face. He could hear your heartbeat race in your chest.

“You don’t need to. We aren’t going to ever speak of this again. You aren’t ever going to show your face here in Hell’s Kitchen again. This never happened as far as I’m concerned, and I hope you learn to feel that way yourself.” The Devil grunted. 

“Fuck you.” You spat. 

“It’s not my fault that fate has aligned us. I am perfectly fine with never seeing you again, but don’t you ever talk to me like that. I am not some low-life scum. I am Spider-Woman and you will respect me even if I have to beat it out of you.”

You push him directly into the wall behind him. Once again, the bricks on the wall crumble while the Devil stays in one piece. Straightening yourself up, you climb to the roof of the building. 

“By the way. I would never want the Devil as a soulmate.” You seethe. 

“Stop calling me that.” The man calls out. 

“Devil? Why? Isn’t that what you are known as?” You were genuinely confused now. 

“DareDevil. If you were to shorten it, then just say Dare. Makes me seem like less of an asshole.” 

“I’ll do that when you act like less of one, Devil.” You leap from the building.

Like hell, if you were going to have a soulmate as mean as that.

Foggy and Karen saw Matt’s change as soon as he walked into the office. Instead of his normal suit and tie, Matt had only worn a button-up with a clip-on bow tie. To put it frankly, the lawyer looked…solemn. As if he was grieving. 

The usual greetings this morning were skipped. Matt simply walked by his friends and shut his office door swiftly. He needed to get his mind off of last night any way that he could. 

The issue with Matt was that he would never tell Foggy and Karen about the things that mattered. The things that he should tell someone, probably a counselor if he’s honest. How could he tell his best friends that he had met his soulmate, and proceeded to tell them to fuck off? 

For the first time in weeks, Matt had given a confession at the church. He had to wash away the guilt from that night. While he was in that booth, Matt had cried. The man had wept because he knew how bad he had fucked up. 

In truth, Matt couldn’t believe that he had a soulmate that was so pure. Someone who stood up for justice correctly, instead of muddying the lines of what’s right and what’s wrong. It hurt him badly. Knowing that he could never live up to being the perfect boyfriend or lover. 

The emotions that Matt felt following that meeting with the spider were different than any he had felt before. All his life, Matt thought this cruel world wanted nothing more than to see him suffer. However, the suffering he felt now, was all by his own hands. 

Matt looked at the case files in front of him, hoping for an escape from his brain. As fate would have it, everything happens for a reason. Grabbing the case file for Y/L/N, Matt opened his laptop ready to begin his research.

Finding your soulmate that night had left you full of adrenaline. Luckily, you could take all of the energy out fighting crooks. However, one of the men you took down got a nasty jab in, leaving you pretty worse for wear. 

Your fingers rubbed against the poorly done stitching to your side. Huffing, you dropped your hand and walked into the local coffee shop. It was your day to pick up coffee for you and Harry. 

After picking up your order, you made your way to Oscorp. You knew you would be a little late, but you had a pretty great excuse for being late. I mean you did meet your soulmate last night, even if you were sure it wouldn’t work out. 

“You’re late.” Harry deadpanned. 

“Yeah.” You handed him his coffee. 

“What happened to you?” Harry could see you holding your side slightly. 

“Nothing important, just a crook had a knife.” You lied.

Harry knew you were lying, but he didn’t want to push it. He saw on the news that Spider-Woman was seen near Hell’s Kitchen last night. Whatever went down over there was your business. 

“Man this coffee is good!” Harry changed the subject, noticing you becoming tense.

“Harold you have been getting the same coffee order for five years, how do you still think it’s good?” You laugh. 

The two of you made your way to your lab. There were times when you wished Harry was your soulmate, but then he found MJ. You had never seen him so happy and it hurt for a while. Then you realized that you could have that at some point. Yet, you met your soulmate and proceeded to fight with him before running away. 

Life for a super was never easy, was it?

Matt used his walking stick to make his way to the front desk of the Oscorp building. He knew that this case wasn’t as big as others, yet he was pulled to it. Since Foggy had brought it to his desk, he’s been researching Y/N Y/L/N. She had graduated from ESU with top marks and had gotten a job at Oscorp almost immediately. 

This was five years after Dr. Connors had tried to turn all of New York City into walking, talking lizards. After some serious research, Matt was able to see that you had interned with Connors at that time. Maybe you were close to him. 

The lawyer quickly spoke to the woman at the desk before making his way up to your lab. He softly knocked on the door to your lab, jumping back slightly when he heard a crash. 

“Be right there!” You called from inside your lab.

Matt had no idea that on the other side of that door you were in quite the pickle. Funny enough, you had gotten the zipper on your Spider-Woman suit stuck. You were now crawling upside down on the ceiling trying to pull the suit off. 

With a huff, you were finally able to unzip the suit. Peeling off the suit, you rushed over to your pile of clothes. Quickly, you pulled a shirt over your head and jumped into some jeans. Fixing your hair for a second, you took a deep breath before opening the door. 

“Hello.” You looked up at the man in front of you.

Immediately you noticed the walking stick in front of him and mentally cursed yourself. You just spent all that time taking off a suit that this man wouldn’t have even seen.

“Hi, are you Y/N?” The man cocked his head slightly.

Huh, he kind of looked like a puppy when he did that. 

“Yes, that’s me.” You smiled.

“I’m Matt Murdock. I am a defense attorney at Nelson and Murdock. I am hoping to help you with the civil legal case you have going on.”

Ah, you had heard about the case. You hoped to keep it under wraps, especially since the whole lizard thing was your fault. 

“Oh, yeah, my lab is a bit of a mess right now but feel free to come in.” You opened the door fully. 

Taking his hand softly, you led him into your lab. Matt was thankful for that, your hands were really warm. 

“Thank you.” 

You and Matt spoke for an hour about your situation. How you had stolen all of the footage that Dr. Connor had made from the sewer about turning the city into lizards. Matt could tell you were lying about how you got the footage but didn't pry. The story that you had told him other than that, was all the truth. 

You seemed to be someone who had simply stumbled upon something way bigger than yourself. Oh, how right he was. 

Matt got up to leave, standing from the chair you had lent him. Walking towards the door, he noticed you tense up as he got close to a certain section of the lab. Then he could smell it. The specific chemicals that he had only smelt one other time. 

The webs that had held him to the wall the night he met Spider-Woman.

He doesn't ever think that your anxiety is irrational- his best friend gets anxious after all. Please never be afraid to go to him when you feel anxious, because he will eradicate anything scaring you.

⇰ Ushijima Wakatoshi is definitely something.

He is unknowingly the best boyfriend ever when it comes to this. If you're anxious, if you find it hard to breathe, he just knows. And he will silently make his way over, bringing you into one of those hugs of his. Those big, strong hug of his that you thought would kill you the first time.

He can't say with 100% certainty that he knows what you're dealing with, (he doesn't), but he knows that you need him sometimes. And that's what matters right?

⇰ Sakusa Kiyoomi likes to take it slowly.

He glowers at the people around if they're overwhelming you, he gives you his jacket if you need a break, everything. He's somehow an expert at soothing you if you are starting to panic. People often don't realize you two have slipped away so you can calm down if you're in public, and at home he just kind of curls around you. (He doesn't care about the germs- it's you).

Any time you need him, he'll stop everything. Confide in him- it makes him feel needed.

🔥spicy opinions on D&D and/or tieflings

Buckle up.

Druid is best class but gets shafted by wizards themselves and all 3 of the upcoming ua circles getting published officially need heavy reworking that I hope they get but I don't trust Wizards to see a few positive comments on the subclasses for a class they already don't care about and not just slap them into the book as is without any thought.

The fantasy race issue could literaly be solved with a single word change to a more accurate term of species.

In the same vein the actual root of at least 5e's diversity issue is their own unwillingness to publish world lore content. Literaly there is no content for the entire rest of the planet outside the sword coast that isn't from previous editions. They couldn't even be bothered to give any details about Kara-Tur or Zakhara.

Similarly also, wizards are way too reliant on old content and homebrew to fill the gaps of their content while they go off to publish crossover books with uterly useless and entirely dismissable content in it. Why is there not multiple monster manuals by now?

All official artificers suck and miss the appeal of attificers and I will not play one until i find a homebrew one that is appropriate.

Sick of saying "I guess I got to homebrew it" to increasingly basic things that become increasingly unjustified to not exist with each passing year of lack of content book sold for 80$.

Revised ranger is genuinely good an enjoyable and I love them.

Druids should have web.

It's not OC, it's PC. I mean, insert the "I guess" meme here since by loose basic definition it'snot wrong, but no. It's PC. Way too many things are called OCs.

People who impose the no metal rule on druids are old fashioned and its a stupid rule that makes no sense and is a hold over from old d&d in the same way the alignment system and the expectation your paladin is lawful good is, whose only justification is if you only run them as classic poorly thought out "robots eat your soul" fantasy druids part of a hippy cult that probably thinks GMOs are evil and have no actual knowledge of nature. I really hate this rule, if you use it it should be a character quirk not a rule imposed on the whole class especially in an edition that tries to encourage not playing "class as character" and reflavouring.

Unless you do it badly like turning a 3d20+5 into a 1d4-1 most players won't notice you skewed the roll so just do it.

Pathfinder is neither the best thing ever nor the worst thing ever. Its slightly better 3.5 with more content. It's not so different enough to get up in arms one way or the other about.

You are not quirky and unique for making your tiefling purple. Your tiefling still looks like you made a generic hipster, slapped horn thoughtlessly one their forehead, and then used a colour slider. You forget exactly how much freedom you have in designing a tiefling even if you pretend the description in the player's guide is absolute law as though the book itself doesn't remind you its only a general guide it encourages you to tweak. Tieflings are one of the easiest customizeable races and your attempt to be unique and different while creating the most standard of tiefling bard manwhores ironically reveals how basic and uncreative you are by trying too hard. You have created a reverse situation where making a tiefling with a human skin tone actually stands out more in your attempt to stand out and be quirky. And no, giving them a pride flag undershirt does not make them more distinct and is not a substitutefor actual character. Give your character some actual character rather than using the fantasy equivelant of green skinned space babe as a crutch replacement for character design and personality.

(Unless a standard tiefling bard is what you want to play for whatever reason , then go ahead. This is at people who's goal was to make something special and unique just by making their pc a tiefling for the sake of standing out. Even then, if thats what your group likes to do still go ahead and do it, it's just annoying to see constantly.)

On the opposite end or in a way a similar end, and this directed at a very specific series of reddit posts I saw the other day so apologies for getting a bit ranty here, don't tell people how they have to run their tieflings just because they want to make a silly gay rainbow character and not a big scary demonkin. You're the kinda person who gets mad when people don't play drow as evil backstabbing rogues, you lorehumper in an edition that hates lore. There is nothing wrong with a cute tiefling, or an "effeminate" tiefling, or a tiefling that doesn't suffer persecution constantly, or someone wanting to be purple instead of flaming red, or if they're as common as humans. It's not destroying the game for people to not play the example base character from the player's handbook. If that's how you want to play go play with people who want to play that way, leave Flavourtown the pink tiefling unicorn sorcerer and his boyfriend Redeemed Drow #48501 alone to play in their group. Criticize their choices all you want but don't tell them they can't play the game how they see fit to and that if you end up in the same group you'll punish them. They may be annoying but you're reprehensible and toxic if you do that.

Also no, playing a tiefling does not mean you liked h*m*st*ck.

When Toki suggested they visit the largest bookstore in the city, it was done more as an act of kindness towards Magnus, and less because he was genuinely curious to peruse three floors worth of dusty, old books. He barely read as it was, and only brought it up because Magnus let him pick what movie they were going to see when they visited the theater, and was super patient when he took him over to one of the few remaining music stores left in the state. Toki was surprised he even remembered the name, but Magnus shined at the idea, mentioning he could go for a few new reads. 

Toki stood on his toes, peering over a row of dusty novels bearing forgettable names, wondering if he might accidentally stumble upon mouse, a spider’s web or perhaps some long-forgotten token–a keychain, a piece of jewelry or hidden note–left behind by some hypothetical being who also made the mistake of taking their boyfriend to a boring bookstore. He honestly had hoped that a massive bookstore would contain more than just…books. Sure, there was the obligatory magazine and music section tucked deep in the corner of the first floor, and it was one of the more louder sections, too; however, it proved only a brief reprieve from the impending boredom that had now consumed Toki’s soul.

The bookstore, despite its multiple levels, fancy lighting and pillars, recycled books sculpted into long tunnels and fancy designs, decorative art that covered the walls and filled the building with a warm, comforting glow, and the entire third floor dedicated to the arts, was still just a bookstore. Nothing changed the fact that the air tasted dry, that most of the books Toki picked up were boring and contained no captivating pictures, and that he had to maintain an “inside voice” while he waited for Magnus to sort through an ever-changing collection of novels.

Toki left the fantasy cubicle where he had sequestered himself in, turned a corner and, remaining partly hidden, viewed Magnus some several feet away. He sat on the floor, two books resting on top each leg, and silently analyzed each one, trying to determine the lucky cover that he’d take home. Toki had already attempted to use some of his allowance, but was immediately rejected, with Magnus reminding him Toki already spent money on tickets and several records, and didn’t want their manager hounding him for unnecessary spending again. A shame, because Toki just wanted to leave and return to the bustling streets. Hollywood was literally right around the corner, and Toki was spending its eve in a store he wasn’t even allowed to run around in, toss yarn, touch the paintings, or have fun.

Still, whether Toki wanted to admit it or not, there was something nice about seeing Magnus struggle over something as mundane as picking a silly book. Watching Magnus unconsciously nipping at his own lip, bringing a leg up to chest once he picked up a book, or playing with his own hair was a peculiar, but welcoming sight to behold. If only Toki hadn’t already spent nearly… forty-three minutes in this blasted store, he might have considered sneaking a photo of Magnus’ intense resolve as he discarded one book in favor of picking up a new title.

Instead, Toki just about had the right mind to call Abigail and ask if he could afford to buy the whole bookstore; that way, Magnus wouldn’t have to worry about having to decide anything! 

It was a nice little fantasy, but even Toki couldn’t excuse such an extreme purchase, and over something as stupid as literature. Instead, he pulled himself off from the corner, and decided to try yet another secluded section of the expansive store and see if there might be anything to keep him sane for a few minutes longer. 

He ended up in the early sci-fi section, and although Toki had no intent on reading anything, did find some solace in viewing the covers. The pictures of pale, big-headed aliens exiting long, phallic-like spaceships provided some amusement.

Toki was busy staring at a cover of some stereotypical American hero ogling a purple-skinned, but otherwise pretty alien, when a finger prodded his side. Toki squirmed, stumbling back as he recoiled from the surprise attack, and bumped right into Magnus.

An arm grappled around Toki. “What are you looking at?” Magnus asked, giving Toki a firm shake before setting him free. 

Giggling, Toki rubbed his side and answered, “Nothins.” He noticed three books stowed under Magnus’ arm. “Oh, you founds somethins?”  he asked, feigning innocence, and trying desperately to not sound too helpful.

“Yeah, I did,” Magnus replied. The answer alone was a huge relief, but Magnus’ enthusiasm filled the otherwise still and stuffy atmosphere, and for a moment Toki didn’t think the store was too bad. If Magnus could find something worthwhile and smile at him like that, then perhaps the trip wasn’t a bust. “You find anything?” 

Toki pulled a holographic bookmark from his pocket. “Just this books-mark.”

“I’ll take that,” Magnus said, snatching it up and stowing it into one of the book’s pages. “C’mon, let’s go.”

Never had such a plain statement sounded so sweet. “Alrights,” Toki said. He let Magnus take the lead, smiling at the way while Magnus talked about the ingenuity behind one of the author’s work, how literary theorists were still actively writing about the other, and although he hated the third, didn’t mind getting the book because it was second-hand. They descended the stair, and Toki kept nodding his head, not quite understanding what the heck Magnus was talking about, but was still pleased to see how excited Magnus got when talking about the cultural impact a book could have on society. 

“Hey, stop for a second.”

“Hmm?” 

Magnus remained put, three steps in front of Toki. Moreover, he was three steps beneath Toki, and with their current position, Toki hovered over Magnus by a good couple of inches.

Magnus pulled out his phone. “Here, get behind me,” he said, gesturing to Toki to move with the sway of his device. Confused, Toki rubbed the back of his head. The ends of Magnus’ mouth lifted in a sly smirk. “C’mon,” he said, “you’re telling me we’re about to go through an entire store decorated with sorta of crap without you stopping me for one of your selfies?”

The remark warranted a quick snort of the nose, and Toki humbly breaking into an embarrassed, but happily little smile. The bookstore did have a few locations that merited a snapshot, a romantic pose between partners, but Toki had been so bored he hadn’t really noticed until Magnus waved that glowing screen, calling him to position.

Bookstore or not, Toki wasn’t going to pass on the chance of having Magnus be the one to take a picture of them together. Toki stood behind Magnus, hands cupping his pointed shoulder before kneeling just a little so that their heads were aligned. To his continued pleasure, Magnus rubbed his cheek against his, scratching the side of his face with a rough tickle, then raised the phone, adjusting it accordingly so that it captured both their likeness.

“On the count of three,” Magnus slowly announced, and Toki’s already cheeky grin extended up to his ears as he prepared for Magnus’s index finger to snap the photo. “One…two...”  

Toki held his breath, ready for the photo, when he felt that same scruff rub his face again, only this time it changed, going from rough to soft as Magnus turned, planting a sudden kiss on Toki’s unprepared cheek. His eyes widened, detecting that sudden transition, but not making complete sense of it until Magnus lips pushed against his skin, sending a surprise flutter of delight across Toki right as the camera took the photo. 

Magnus removed himself from Toki before he had the chance to react. “Nice,” he announced, grinning smugly at Toki. His finger and thumb rolled over the photo, enlarging it and earning a somewhat cruel chuckle from the man. “How cute,” he said, then offered up the photo to Toki.

Fingers brushing over his cheek, Toki glanced at the picture, at himself and Magnus kissing him.

“Oh,” he said, voice turning a little faint. He took the phone in his hands, bringing it close to get a better look at it. It was slightly off, and when Magnus had turned to kiss him, must’ve shook the phone a little, because the surrounding lights had a mild blur to them. Still, Toki’s fingers tenderly brushed over the screen, thumb grazing over past-Magnus kissing his round cheeks, and past-Toki’s expression capturing that tickle, the simple pleasure of being an object of affection, reaching his heart. “Oh. Wowee.”

“A little gift for you, for being so patient with me,” he heard Magnus say.

Toki snapped up, feeling his heart tremble upon realizing he’d been caught. “Oh,” he said, voice dropping as he nervously shuffled in place. “Uhm…”

Magnus chuckled again, and if Toki didn’t know any better, was sure he saw the start of a blush before Magnus turned his back on him . “Don’t worry, I’ll still buy you the bookmark.”

Bad Nights

A/N: Hankcon dribble-dribble vent piece of Hank having a bad depression night and Connor giving him cuddles.

Depression is disgusting. Depression is a glob of putrid flaws come together, breeding off a person’s insecurities and fears, polluting any space that dares to allow any form of light through. When it seems to have finally died the slow painful death it wanted of its host, it rises from a grave always planted in the victims shadow, ready to infect and spread worse than before. There was absolutely nothing nice about depression, and no one knows this better than Hank.

The obvious are the days he doesn’t want to wake up. There’s nothing blinding about that, those signs are clear as any he’s suffering under the weight of depression. With a little bit of muscle and patience, he can pull the grotesque rotting mess off of his soul for a moment to live. Sure, the feeling of never wanting to wake up again is worrisome, but those lazy mornings are the jokester of depression. He could laugh through his heavy breaths, because being able to lay in felt so good. No, tired mornings weren’t going to actually kill him, no matter how much they threaten him with a good time…

It was the insomnia that was going to drive him over the edge. The nights he felt haunted by his own darkness, when sleep was so close but only gave him the tickle of his palm and not the relief of his chest. He’d toss and turn in bed for hours, eyes turning more and more blood shot by the second, until eventually there’s just thick, sparse tears rolling down his cheeks in the early hours of the morning, new under-eye bags accessorising the many before them.

What did any of it mean though? Hank was depressed, okay-- astronauts in space could see that (he didn’t exactly do much to cover his dishevelment) but Hank didn’t know what to do when his brain was meant to switch off and let autopilot take control. His heart had the attitude of a coked up brat, doing anything and everything to recover from millennial crisis number 7092. Hank’s depression never comes out with absolute certainty or grandeur, it's always some inconvenient slump that keeps him tripping over the tangles of his own mind. He yearns for a moment where he can confess the sins of his demons, but just as fast when the moment is rearing its head, he'll scoff and mock the notion of confession.

But those sleepless nights are the worst. They laugh at him. The taunts echo around his head, in harmony to his heart beat. He’ll bury his face into his pillow, inhale the grim smell that’s weeks worth of body odour, and let his eyes roll back so far they numb the pain of his exhaustion. Sleepless nights choke Hank.

Sometimes all he can do is stare at his arms in the glow of the midnight moon, the light casting through the window, acting as his bedside light. He can practically see the years bleed through his skin and remind him he’s too human. No matter how much he tries to detach himself, he’ll always have blood coursing through his veins. As long as his heart beats, he's human. He holds his arm up to cover the eerie glow, the hairs illuminating, cascading like dying stars down the tattered tan of his skin. He swallows with great force, feeling too real. Is he just a figment of a greater powers abilities? Is his consciousness just a string of codes, forcing him to believe he has the freedom to make decisions and even question himself, like it wasn’t already planned? Why does his brain have to go there-- why does it feel like he’s floating along trying to find his footing on a floor that doesn’t exist? Like galaxies are aligning in the tangled web of his iris’, and he can feel himself being pulled around, always, by everything, with a grip solid as a rock. There’s never a bruise or scar left over.

He's so tired he can barely breathe. His lungs work tirelessly, but they never find the satisfaction of oxygen - maybe that’s a luxury for when he finds the ground. He falls in and out of consciousness, sparks of panic burning through the multiplex of universes stretching out his vision, and all there is is the smoke of a fire, the ash coating his throat.

He lets his arm drop with a heavy thud. The springs of the mattress squawk, then he’s left with the cotton buzz drilling through his temples. His sheets are warm, probably his own body heat. He bunches up the sheet in his fist, relaxes, then sighs. If he could, he’d love to just turn off for a few days and not exist. Come back without any knots in his back and cramps in his neck. Sleep did nothing anymore. That part of his spiral was long gone, now he’s just waiting for the bloody splat below.

He lets his eyelids drop, but there’s no warmth that blankets him. He wants to sleep. He’s so tired.

A gentle knock makes him groan, turning over to see Connor peaking through the crack of the bedroom door. The android wears one of Hank’s old concert tees and a pair of tight boxers, and his eyebrows knit neatly into a concerned frown.

“I heard some rustling and wondered if perhaps you were having one of your bad nights?” He cautiously steps through, though keeps his back on the door frame while Hank glares at him through a squint. “I wanted to offer you my company, or maybe a cup of tea? I know you don’t like tea, but I’ve read it can be very soothing if-”

“Please stop talking and get in bed.” Hank throws the duvet open and Connor jumps in beside him, wrapping his arms around Hank’s waist. He presses a light kiss to the top notch of his spine, then nuzzles into the crook of his neck. One hand rests softly on the round squish of his bare belly, the other combs through the locks of his hair.

Hank likes Connor’s hands on his body. He’s never liked physical affection, but Connor reminds him of simple comforts, like childhood bears or blankets, or hot chocolate on a winter night. Even though he knows the touch is that of someone with mechanical sensors, with wires and electrical currents keeping him thriving with life, Connor feels more real than anyone ever has. Connor somehow helps Hank feel grounded when he's floating away.

"Usually when you're like this you don't sleep at all. If you would like, we could get out that old console you had has a kid and play the game with animals?"

Despite his best efforts, Hank can practically hear the excitement in his voice. He laughs. "You want to play animal crossing?"

Connor tries to nuzzle himself closer to Hank, as if even possible. "Only if you want to. It might cheer you up?"

Hank knew though Connor did truly want to cheer him up, the offer was as much a selfish ploy to stay up playing video games as it was to comfort him through insomnia. He wonders if maybe showing the android his old collection was a bad idea.

"All the villagers will be asleep by this time, you know? It works on real time."

"We could reset the clock of the console? Or we could stay here, in bed!" He kisses Hank's back. "Whatever you want."

It wouldn't fix him, and Connor knew that, but when his brain starts bouncing dark ideas off the walls of his skull, the distraction of his innocent android boyfriend trying to catch every fish for a virtual museum is well welcomed.

Hank rolls over and cups Connor's face. He leans in and kisses him softly on the forehead. "Thanks." He whispers, kissing him again.

"For what, Hank?"

"For just...existing, I dunno."

"Oh," Connor blinks then smiles wide. "Well then, thank you too!"

Hank pulls himself up and rolls out of bed, yanking Connor to his feet. He puts an arm around his waist and walks with him to the living room to set up the game console for Connor. 

For now that’s enough. A distraction, with the one he loves...

Danger signs came in various forms. Whether it was a road sign, a siren, caution tape, or even a text, danger signs seemed to follow you everywhere you went. Your significant other of a year, Tanner, was a danger sign in himself. He was into everything illegal whether it was drugs, drinking, or breaking a simple law, he was there.

At first, you let it go. It didn’t involve you and he was fine when the two of you were alone. Then, it got worse. He joined a gang, started dealing, and then came the hitting. You let it go, as you did his reckless behavior but it became too much. Small red cheeks turned into bruises the size of hands, bloody knuckles, and sleepless nights.

Your friends had tried to convince you otherwise but you wouldn’t let them. You insisted time and time again that Tanner wasn’t bad when the two of you were alone but they knew too much. They knew the bruises, the cuts didn’t align with your excuses. They had always struggled to read you but this was obvious. You needed a way out.

One friend, your best friend, Peter Parker, knew better. He could see right through you. He knew behind the makeup you were hiding black and blue from him. He might’ve been oblivious to other people but not you, never you. He was too caught up in his feelings for you to let you be put into harm’s way nonstop. He knew he needed to do something about the way Tanner treated you and with his head nagging at him, it would happen soon.

“Tanner, babe. Stop signs are there for a reason,” You barely glanced up as he ran through a three way stop.

He huffed and made a sharp turn. “You shouldn’t even bother making comments anymore, you annoying bitch.”

You rolled your eyes as you continued to text your friends on your phone. You and Tanner were heading to a party downtown for the night. You definitely didn’t want to go but, as usual, you had no choice.

You tuned out the radio as you continued to play on your phone, oblivious to your boyfriend’s terrible driving. He was speeding through stop lights, swerving lanes, and cutting cars off left and right.

Red and blue lights pulled you back to reality, finally bringing the loud rap music to your attention. If it weren’t for the lights, you wouldn’t have realized there were multiple police cars following you.

“Tanner, stop the car!” You slammed your hand on the volume button, efficiently cutting off the music.

Tanner merely glanced in the rear view mirror to see all the cars following. He clenched his jaw before yanking the wheel again, heading down an ally.

“What the hell are you doing?” You looked at him in disbelief as he continued to try and lose the police vehicles. “You’re going to get us killed!”

“I told you to shut the hell up with the annoying comments!” He shouted as he slammed his hands against the wheel in annoyance. You sank back into your seat, stunned into silence.

After another sharp turn, you saw the highway stretch out in front of you as another police car tried to block you in. Tanner swerved around them, making the tires screech as he got in the high speed lane.

Realizing the severity of the situation, you unlocked your phone with shaky hands and began typing a message out to Peter.

I don’t know where you are or what you’re doing but I could really use a hero right about now.

You locked your phone and tucked it in your pocket before your eyes landed on the terrifying scene in front of you. Not too far ahead was the drawbridge that crossed over the river. Even from your spot, you could see the large ship that was crossing underneath, meaning the bridge was split apart up in the air.

“Tanner, the bridge,” You gasped, hoping that would be the factor that made him stop the car.

“Do you think I care about the fucking bridge? No! There’s thousands of dollars worth of drugs in this car and there’s no way in hell I’m stopping this car for a bridge,” He grunted and tightened his grip on the wheel.

You looked at him with wide eyes. “Drugs? You’re running because you’re hiding drugs? Tanner, that stuff can be handled! We don’t need to jump the bridge because you’re hiding weed in the trunk!”

A stinging sensation filled your cheek as you realized he had smacked you. You blinked and curled into your seat, efficiently forced into silence. There was no use fighting against him when he was this angry. You were smart enough to know that.

“One more damn comment from your mouth and this isn’t going to end pretty. Understand?” He growled as his hand searched the side of the car door. As if you weren’t terrified enough, the shiny black gun that he pulled out was enough to clamp your mouth shut.

Your heart was pounding in your chest as you neared the bridge. Looking over your shoulder you could see the police cars back off, figuring out what Tanner was going to do. Your hand grabbed the door handle tightly as you dug your fingernails into the armrest.

“Tanner, please,” You cried as the car sped onto the bridge.

Silence followed your begging as Tanner continued to race up the bridge, his mind set on getting away from the police. A small whimper escaped your lips as you closed your eyes tightly, knowing your last moments were right around the corner.

Suddenly, your body snapped against the seatbelt as the car was yanked to a stop. You screamed at the action before looking up. The car was inches from the edge of the bridge but wasn’t moving. You glanced over your shoulder to see none other than Spider-Man swinging across the bridge, his strong webbing keeping the car in place.

You let out a gasp of relief, unbuckling your seatbelt as Tanner shouted in anger. You pushed against the door and stumbled out to be met with a group of over twenty police officers, all with guns pointed in your direction. Your hands rose in the air as two made their way over and pulled you away from the car.

You spun back around to see Tanner throwing a fit as he kicked the window out, seeing as Spider-Man had webbed the door shut on purpose. You could hear his angry shouting, how he cursed you out as the paramedics led you away from the scene to the back of an ambulance. You ignored their pestering questions as your eyes narrowed in on one figure. Spider-Man was perched on top of the bridge, his concerned eyes on you in the hands of the emergency responders. You gave him a small smile before looking at the nurse next to you.

“What?” You asked in confusion, having ignored everything she said.

She sighed, “You have bruises all over your body, Miss Y/L/N. Do you want to tell me what that’s about?”

You blinked a few times before you realized she had pulled up your shirt sleeves to reveal the hand shaped bruises covering your skin. You took a deep breath and shook your head, remaining silent as you watched Tanner fight against the police.

“Miss Y/L/N?” She repeated your name but your attention span was long gone. You and Spider-Man were locked in a staring competition it seemed, both of you speaking without words.

It wasn’t until hours later that you actually got to speak to Peter. You had to give statements to the police about Tanner, eventually telling them everything. You had decided against pressing charges, knowing that he would be locked away for a long time anyway and you wouldn’t see him.

“You’re okay,” Peter whispered as he saw your figure walk into his apartment. He repeated his words again as he crossed the floor to wrap you in a tight hug as you let your walls break. It didn’t take long until his shirt was soaked with tears from you as you thanked him over and over for getting you out of there.

“I was lying to myself, really,” You let out a sad laugh as you pulled away from his arms. “We were cursed from the beginning.”

Peter frowned as he brushed the tears from your cheeks. “You almost died, Y/N. It’s more than cursed. And you weren’t lying to yourself.”

“I was,” You said with a shrug as you leaned against the cushions. “I kept telling myself it would get better, that he would stop being mean. I should’ve put my stuff in a bag, stole the keys and that would’ve been the last time he ever saw me.”

“The police found thousands of dollars with of drugs in that car, you two. Unbelievable the things teenagers do for money,” May scoffed as she entered the room, clutching the TV remote in her hand.

You gave her a small smile. “Tell me about it, May.”

You were grateful. Despite the road of recovery you had ahead of you, you were glad Peter saved you. It gave you a chance to put those who cared about you back in your life, this time without Tanner’s annoying voice criticising your every move. From here on out, you were going to make sure nobody dared to cross you ever again.

Hi! I am extremely new to witchcraft. I don’t even know where to start, tarot cards and the use of crystals really intrigue me and I’d love to learn more about how to use them, where to buy them, which ones you’d recommend. I’d really appreciate it if you could get back to me thank you so much! - an aspiring witch

Hello there! Sorry for the delayed response, I’ve been so busy with the holidays, it’s been crazy. Also, in writing this, I realized this was gonna be a pretty huge response, so click below to read my full response.

To answer your first question, witchcraft is a huge, ever growing umbrella that encompasses so much knowledge, so there’s not really a cut and dry place to start. Various people might have different recommendations as far as where to start, but I started with a lot of research, and baby steps towards what I was interested in. One thing that I did at first was look up secret or closeted witch tips, not because I needed to keep my practice secret, but most of the tips were small, discrete forms of magic that I used to dip my toes into the world of witchcraft.

As I got more confident, I started focusing on more on what really interested me (I really like crystal work, tarot, essential oils/herbs, lunar witchcraft, and astrology). So I started doing some reading on all of those subjects. Going through articles online, a few books from my local library, and various Tumblr posts helped me piece together the mechanics of these various forms.

You mentioned you are interested in crystal work and tarot cards, which is great! I too enjoy working with both, and I’d say those two combined is close to the bulk of my practice (well, and enchanting, but we’ll get to that later). 

Crystals are a great way to get into witchcraft because they can be combined with other practices, or used on their own. I use crystals for meditation/energy work primarily, holding the crystal I think best fits what I want to meditate on/what energy I want to work with, and focusing inward. 

When I say what crystal I think best fits what I want the meditation/energy to be about, I’m referencing their metaphysical properties and associations. Throughout history, various people and cultures have connected various types of crystals to various themes, such as love, business/career, healing, protection, communication, ‘opening the third eye’ or using intuition, helping with anxiety/stress, and bringing harmony and peace, among others. There are tons of themes that are associated with various crystals. 

In addition to themes or emotions that people attribute to crystals, various people and cultures connect different crystals with different parts of the body, associating different crystals with the head/the mind, the heart, the throat, the stomach, among other places. These can often line up with the theme of the crystal as well (for example, I have a necklace made with Lapis Lazuli, a stone associated with communication and honesty, as well as being associated with the throat. I really like this stone because the theme of the crystal also aligns with the biological location, and this necklace allows me to keep this crystal physically on the biological area it’s associated with)

“But where do I find this information?”

This kind of information is all over the web. A site I used a LOT when I was getting into crystal work was the Crystal Vault’s crystal encyclopedia.

While it doesn’t have everything, what it does have is super detailed and really well organized. In addition, searching “(name of the stone) metaphysical properties” in google pulls more of this kind of information than a regular google search of just the stone name. 

For where to buy them, I try to support local business by going to the two closest metaphysical shops near me, but I understand that’s not accessible for everyone. I’m a frequent user of amazon for crystal jewelry, and the site I linked earlier has a shop section as well (unfortunately I can’t attest to their quality of products/service as I haven’t bought from them, I know they have an expansive inventory that could be good for beginners). 

other ways to use crystals include:

-as components/ingredients in spell jars/spell-work

-as talismans, amulets, or charms (wearing, carrying, or placing them in your home/space to bring a specific energy/thing into your life)

-to make crystal elixirs (a sprayable/drippable liquid that you can put on other objects to imbue them with magical power) (A NOTE WITH THIS ONE: crystal elixirs really shouldn’t be drunk, and some of them can be VERY POISONOUS, whether to drink or even to touch/make. always always always ALWAYS be safe and double check if a crystal is water soluble or toxic. It’s always better to be safe than sorry). 

-hundreds and hundreds of other uses that I can’t think of off the top of my head/aren’t in my practice but could certainly be part of yours

For recommendations, a few stones I recommend for beginners/what I started with are:

-Clear Quarts: clear quartz is a great stone because it boosts the energy and ‘vibe’ of all other stones around it. I keep a clear quartz point with all my other crystals for this very reason

-Rose Quartz: a stone popular for it’s gentle pink color, rose quartz has a very loving energy and I found it very welcoming in my early practice

-Black Agate/Black Tourmaline/Obsidian/Hematite: all these stones are associated with protection. While they all have their various individual niches and energy, its good to have a protection stone around when you’re about to start doing witchcraft, as it can protect you from outside influence while you work your witchcraft. 

-Amethyst: this stone is commonly associated with the mystical, intuition, divination, and reaching higher powers, a kind of witchcraft booster if you will (good for tarot, which we’re about to get to). 

So that rather wraps up crystals, again always be safe as these are elements from the earth and can contain chemicals or content harmful to humans and/or pets. In addition, something I like to note is that if you’re storing crystals out in daylight, certain kinds can fade in color (amethyst and rose quartz in particular fade rather quickly if left in direct sunlight). If you want to preserve the vibrancy of your stones, check to see if they’re safe for intense sunlight before picking a display spot. 

Now, onto Tarot

Tarot is one of the most well recognized forms of witchcraft. with the tarot deck being an iconic part of witchcraft. While, of course you don’t need to use tarot to be a witch, you mentioned you were interested in it. 

Tarot is a form of divination using a special deck of 78 cards to predict the future. The deck is made up of 2 categories; the Major arcana and the Minor arcana. 

The Major arcana has many of the more ‘iconic’ or recognizable cards from tarot. These cards generally have fancy names and do not fit a suit. Some examples of these cards are “the hierophant”, “The devil” “the lovers” and “justice”. These cards are sometimes considered more powerful than the Minor arcana. 

The Minor arcana is the second part of the deck. The minor arcana has 4 suits; swords, staffs/rods, cups, and pentacles/coins (depending on what deck you have, they might use either staffs or rods, and pentacles or coins, the symbolism and meaning are the same between staffs vs rods and pentacles vs coins). Each suit in the minor arcana contains a king, a queen, a knight, a page, and 10-1 of the suit. These cards have various meaning, and while may be considered less powerful than the major arcana, can still be very enlightening and powerful.  

To use tarot cards for divination is called giving a tarot reading, and while the process is in effect the same, there’s a few ways to get there. 

To start, when performing a tarot reading you focus on a question. A question for a tarot reading needs to be rather general and open ended. Questions like “Does my boyfriend love me?” “Am I pregnant? and “When will I die?” are too narrow for a tarot reading to explain. A better way to phrase a question if you want this kind of information is something like “What does the future hold for my relationship?” “What does my fertility look like?” and “What does my distant future look like?” 

After determining your question and focusing on it, you shuffle the cards face down and select cards (how many you select depends on what tarot spread you use, which I’ll get to in a minute). Different people have preferred methods of shuffling, and I personally like to lay all my cards face down in a messy pile and pick rather at random, touching as many cards as I can and picking which one ‘feels right’

For how many to pick up and what to do with them, we have to look to tarot spreads. Tarot spreads are patterns in which you lay out tarot cards during a reading, and the placement of the cards represent different things. A common spread is a 3 card speed, where you lay 3 cards face down in a line. going from left to right, the cards represent your past, present, and future, as related to the question. There are TONS of tarot spreads available free online, with the pattern  and the placement key to tell you what each card position means. I personally like the 1 card quick draw for just getting a pulse of the situation, the 3 card spread, and @barberwitch‘s full moon clarity spread (link below)

once you’ve picked your cards and laid them out in a spread, you flip them over one by one in the numbered order of the spread, and interpret the cards. When I started reading tarot, I was no where even close to having the card meanings memorized, but I found this amazing app called Labyrinthos Academy (link to their desktop site below)

it’s a great app that has not only all the card meanings (as well as the inverse meanings, as tarot cards tend to mean either the opposite or near opposite when they show up upside down in a spread) in a neat, clean interface, but has a neat quiz feature to help you memorize the meanings, and the best part is it’s free for iOS and android (however, I think it is unfortunately not available for desktop). (also, fyi, while the app is built for the labyrinthos brand tarot cards, it does work with any deck, as images are fairly standardized, only really different by the difference in art styles by artists). 

As far as decks, there’s a lot of superstition and tradition around tarot decks. Many say that the first deck needs to be stolen/gifted. Please don’t steal a tarot deck just to match tradition, it’s not worth the penalty, and while receiving a tarot deck as a gift is a great gift and a wonderful gesture, it could be a lot of waiting around, or if you’re a closeted witch, nearly impossible to get as a gift. I bought my first deck myself and never had any troubles with it. 

The first deck I bought was, honestly, the cheapest deck I could find. I was broke and just wanted the most basic deck to get me by. I picked up a basic deck at a halloween store (link below)

while it did it’s job (the cards were well made and didn’t fall apart, the deck didn’t have any missing cards), I didn’t like the the art style all that much, and they were really hard to read unless you had memorized what card illustration matched what card. However, for $4 USD, you really couldn’t beat the price if budget is an issue

Recently, however, I got The Essential Tarot Kit (link below)

while it has a higher price point ($15 USD) it comes in a sturdy box that can be used for storage when not in use, and also comes with a mini book with a few basic spreads and a page of meaning for every card in the deck. I really like this because I like to not have electronics out when I do tarot readings, it can be distracting. In addition, the deck has beautiful illustrations and the bottom of the card has the name of the card in a much easier to read print. 

As for where to find tarot cards, they’re readily available on sites like amazon, and most major bookstores will stock tarot kits (however if you’re looking for a certain art style, a brick and mortar bookstore might not have the best selection). 

In addition to tarot cards, there’s also oracle decks, which have their own styles, number of cards, and symbolism, as well as ways to use a standard playing deck for divination. (all three of these forms of witchcraft fall under cartomancy: divination using a deck of cards). 

So that pretty much wraps up tarot cards. A few notes before I close on tarot, many people have multiple decks, with some being just for personal readings, and other decks for giving other people readings (where they ask the question and choose the cards, and you help set up the spread and help with interpreting the cards). Some people also recommend having a black cloth to work on, as it blocks outside energy or influence, but I personally feel fine using my deck on pretty much any flat, clean, safe surface as long as I cleanse the area before starting. In addition, when dealing with divination, and tarot in general, remember that what the cards say is not set in stone. Just because you interpret the cards one way does not mean that exact thing will come to pass, and there’s nothing you can do about it. Tarot has been explained to me as a glimpse into the future if you do not change anything, and that you always have the power to change the future through your actions in the present.

RePoint: Erika Klash

Thotyssey knew in 2016 that our very first On Point Interview needed to be with somebody dynamic, colorful and fascinating. Who better then Erika Klash, then just starting to make a splash with her wholly original brand of colorful cosplay drag? A year later, we’re delighted to catch up with Erika -- now a Californian -- a few days after her debut on the second season of World of Wonder’s thrilling drag monster competition, “Dragula!”

Thotyssey: Erika, hello again! Thanks for talking to us! How was your Halloween? Erika Klash: My Halloween was great! It was a whirlwind weekend. The Halloween Ball on the 28th, The Dragula Season 2 premiere on the 30th... and then yesterday, the premiere episode dropped!

OMG I just watched it today! I'm gonna ask you all about it, but first, let's catch up... we miss you here in NYC since you left us for San Francisco! Did you basically have to start over when you got there, or did people already have an idea of you from Insta & YouTube? I am fortunate enough to have had a good online presence before the move. A few girls knew who I was before I got to town, but in a lot of ways it was like starting over. The drag is very different in SF, and I’ve done my best to embrace the differences. Peaches Christ and Heklina I had had the privilege of working with prior to the move, so I definitely had them in my corner from the beginning. Building a whole new local network from scratch was tough, but I’m really happy with how I’ve grown from these challenges. I’m still getting to know the girls in SF, but they have all been super welcoming.

Can you describe the San Fran drag scene for us? The San Francisco scene is very community oriented. A lot of queens are activists, and there is a real focus on punk rock / subversive drag. The shows here are such that you end up doing only 1 or 2 numbers, and you are expected in some way to make a production of those numbers, whether that’s with backup dancers or props. That's interesting! Aesthetically, you must fit in pretty seamlessly there.

I don’t fit into any box, so as long as I can understand what works performance-wise, I can always make it work.

Have you and your boyfriend been able to establish, like, a whole San Fran routine yet? Favorite places, a circle of friends, etc? It seems like you were barely there before Dragula happened. That’s right, I was only here for a few months before Dragula, and have only recently returned! I’ve definitely made a lot of friends in the drag scene. I’ve been taking sewing and costume design lessons with Bea Dazzler, one of the pioneers of Trannyshack, along with Peaches and Heklina. We have favorite restaurants and parks, stuff like that.

So, when you first watched the debut season of World of Wonder’s Dragula -- a California-based drag competition web series presented by the Boulet Brothers where contestants and challenges explore more alternative, “darker” realms of drag -- did you immediately want to be a part of the new season? 

Actually, it hadn’t really entered my mind that Dragula was an option. Truth be told, I was actually auditioning for [WoW’s flagship TV show] RuPaul’s Drag Race, when I saw that there was going to be a Season 2 of Dragula. When I watched Season 1, I was under the impression it would be LA queens only for Season 2 as well. Vander Von Odd and Darren Stein both encouraged me to audition, and I was lucky enough to get on! I’ve always wanted to expand on horror and filth elements in my drag, and this was the perfect opportunity. Now I consider myself to be a complete drag monster. The more I thought about it, the more Dragula made sense to me. Dragula is a huge breath of fresh air. For a long time, I’ve felt that drag was getting too straight-oriented. The queerness was blanching away. So it felt disingenuous to say I wanted to be a Drag Race girl.

Drag Race, as wonderful a show as it is and for all the opportunities it has provided for queens, is partially responsible for that mainstreaming or  "straightening" of drag.

To me, Drag Race and Dragula are two different but complementary visions of what a successful drag career can be. The more opportunities we have, the better. And we all owe so much to Mother Ru and what’s she’s done with Drag Race.

For all the variety of drag performance that exists throughout New York, you can see the result of that mainstreaming of the genre in a lot of venues here, for better or worse.

In NYC, I adapted as best I could to make my work suitable for a wide range of crowds. As you know, drag in NYC is about hosting long shows and adapting to the interests of the crowd. Sometimes it’s a bunch of jaded gays who don’t want a drag show in their bar. Or you get tourists, etc. Dragula was a way for me to grow in a different direction and gain some new skills that were more in alignment with what I wanted for the future.

What was the audition process like for the show?

I can’t go into too much detail about the audition process, so I’ll recap some common knowledge stuff. You have to submit photos representing your best personal drag style, as well as the three tenets of Dragula: horror, filth, and glamour. You also must do an acting scene, edit in some live performance videos, and answer some questions.

Was it hard to keep the secret that you were cast for however long you needed to keep it prior to the official announcement? Absolutely. There was some time when I was gigging in SF and had been cast, and I of course had to keep quiet. Also, we were taping the show in LA, so I had to avoid being seen out and about in LA during taping. And were you familiar with any of the queens on your season prior to the taping of the first episode? James and I learned of each other shortly before taping. Abhorra, Bitch Puddin, and Felony Dodger I had worked with once each in LA. Other than that, the girls were a surprise!

I was taken aback when these queens came hard for each other immediately in the dressing room. There was quite a lot of personal beef between many of them prior to the show, and they weren’t shy about laying it all out for us. You were trying to be the peacemaker, but was it very awkward to be in the middle of that? It was not awkward at all. I always have a very specific and strong point of view. But as a writer, I have learned to word myself in a way that is firm but fair. It’s easy to get your point across if you don’t back down from your opinion, but also back up what you say with reason and objectivity. Being a monster has less to do with being a bitch, and more to do with being a strong person. And I wanted to represent that in that first boudoir scene.

I was definitely not expecting the claws to come out that quickly, though.

OMG, I have to ask.... Disasterina! Is that really her voice??? You will have to see! The thing about Disasterina is: she is a straight male playing a character. She has a lot of other characters, and a lot of experience in different kinds of art. This is just one creation of hers. And everything is so well thought out!

I also loved that blue-bearded look of yours when you all had to jump out of your body bags in the beginning of the episode. How long did you have to be in that bag? We were in that bag for a long time! After a while it got really warm in there. So I spent the whole time terrified my beard or nails would come off! 

You kept it together! So for your first main challenge, you had to create a Cenobite look a la Clive Barker’s Hellraiser that still represented your personal drag style. The judges came down pretty hard on your take. I loved it overall, but I saw what they meant about it not being Cenobitey enough. It was an obvious challenge for you to incorporate Erika’s aesthetic into that, though, because you’re generally so colorful while Cenobites are so dark and demonically fetishy. In hindsight, can you think of what you could've done differently?

Well, there are definitely certain things about that look that could have been better executed. I think I was also lacking in terms of performance. I needed to make stronger choices as a character.

I initially had an instinct to go way outside of my box,  but I was concerned that I’d miss the mark on the challenge requirements. The challenge is not just to be any old Cenobite. The challenge is to turn yourself into one. So, there was just a fundamental disconnect between what I am and what a Cenobite is. It was a lot easier for the other girls in the competition. It was an uphill battle from the start.

That being said, the more I see the look, the more I love it. It’s so cool.

I have to confess, I couldn't watch the scene where they stuck you with needles, as the final challenge for the bottom three to remain in the competition. I could barely even listen to thescene’s audio -- it was nightmarish. But you handled it really well, and even said that you found it exhilarating! What was really going on there? Well, when I knew that I would be in the bottom, at first I felt very angry. If I’m such a bad fit, then why did they cast me? What was my purpose? And then all of a sudden a fire lit up in me. I was so determined to stay and prove myself. And I knew that I’d need to do something I didn’t think I could do in order to grow from this experience. Once the needles started coming in, I learned to compartmentalize the pain and the fear. It’s only going to affect you if you let it affect you. This competition tests more than just creativity. It’s about true monstrosity in one’s character, and their personal strength. So is the physical pain of that situation real, or is it mostly mental, do you think? Oh, the physical pain is real. You can’t deny that it fucking hurts. But is it within my ability to do it? Absolutely. The focus then becomes what can I achieve instead of what can I endure. Was that a sanitary situation? Like, were these "needle piercing experts," or whatever, and were they doing it safely? Yes, everything was done in the safest way possible. We all consented to participate, and we are all happy and healthy today (I keep reminding my mom this). Just making sure!

Well, congratulations for surviving the episode and moving forward in the competition! Another device of the show is that all the eliminated contestants film a gory “death scene.”  Are those all filmed at once for everyone, or does the queen already know she’s eliminated when she films the scene?

I’ll plead the fifth on that question! Fair enough! And there really isn't much more I can ask about the show at this point, or else I'd be looking at my own death scene! Is there anything you can say about what we can expect from the rest of the season?

Biggest advice that I take every day is: have a unique perspective on your drag, but keep finding new ways to express those perspectives. Broaden your skill set, and expand on what you do.

And now that Epstein is dead, all eyes are on Maxwell as the keeper of his secrets.The government will have access to the full, unredacted evidentiary record in the case Giuffre brought against Maxwell, Boies said. “In my view, it is very unlikely that Maxwell will escape prosecution,” Boies said. “If that’s right, she would have an enormous incentive to see if she could do a deal.”He added, “It would be a lot better for her to cooperate as opposed to fight it, because somebody’s going to cooperate. There are too many people with knowledge. There are too many people involved in the criminal enterprise. Somebody’s going to cooperate, and in that context, if you’re somebody in Maxwell’s position, you want to be sure you’re in as early as possible.”Barbara McQuade, the former U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan, said Maxwell could remain as the most egregious offender in Epstein’s case.“I would imagine if I were a prosecutor or an investigator in the Epstein case, I would be considering her a subject of the investigation,” said McQuade, a professor at the University of Michigan Law School. “People are usually subjects, witnesses or targets. And that the FBI has offices across the world to work with foreign agencies to find her—if Maxwell is hiding from authorities. “She is an intriguing figure here,” McQuade told The Daily Beast. “It could be that investigators have already talked to her and are not making that known that she’s cooperating. Or it could be that she is under investigation herself. THE STORY: Last weekend, 21-year-old former Disney star Bella Thorne shared a series of explicit images of herself on Twitter, explaining that “for the last 24 hours I have been threatened with my own nudes.” Thorne opted to post the photos herself, because “it’s MY DECISION NOW U DON’T GET TO TAKE YET ANOTHER THING FROM ME. I can sleep tonight better knowing I took my power back.”

On Monday morning’s episode of The View, Whoopi Goldberg expressed her frustration with the story. “If you’re famous, I don’t care how old you are. You don’t take nude pictures of yourself,” she asserted. “Once you take that picture it goes into the cloud and it’s available to any hacker who wants it, and if you don’t know that in 2019 that this is an issue, I’m sorry. You don’t get to do that.”

RIGHTEOUSNESS OF THE RAGE: Thorne isn’t the first female celebrity to have her intimate images hacked, and Goldberg won’t be the last female celebrity to shame other women for taking nude photos. This is a complicated conversation about the consequences of fame, the violation of women’s bodies and the death of privacy in the age of the internet.

But let’s be clear: telling a woman that she’s asking to be hacked when she takes nudes photos is a little bit like telling a woman that she’s asking to be groped when she wears a short skirt. Or, it’s like telling a store clerk they should expect to be robbed when they keep cash in their till. In these situations, there are victims and perpetrators. Let’s focus on catching, shaming and punishing the bad guys.

Influencer Shares Her Branded Engagement on Instagram

THE STORY: Marissa Fuchs is a fashion and lifestyle influencer with nearly 200k followers on Instagram, where she goes by @fashionambitionist. She’s also the Director of Brand Partnerships & Sales at Gwenyth Paltrow’s company, Goop.

Earlier this week, she shared a series of Instagram stories from the Goop office, where her boyfriend, Gabriel Grossman, surprised her with a proposal-esque video.  “I have the most important question of my life to ask you,” he says in the pre-filmed clip, where he notes that traditional wedding’s “weren’t really their style” and that he wanted to create an experience that she could “capture for the ‘gram.”

The authenticity of the grand gesture—which was filled with OTT surprises and took Fuchs to multiple locations over four days—was questioned by The Atlantic journalist, Taylor Lorenz, who tweeted a thread revealing that the “surprise wedding” was pitched to brands before it even began.

“I got the deck yesterday. Here’s the full rundown,” she begins, before posting images of the pitch that was sent to brands.

“This summer, Marissa of @FashionAmbitionist will be pulled into a surprise adventure created by the center of her life, Gabriel,” one of the marketing slides reads. “He will remotely ask her to take an unexpected and sentimental journey to him, a journey that will encompass many familiar stops along the way that offer their own unique gifts.”

RIGHTEOUSNESS OF THE RAGE: In the time the story was going viral, Grossman insisted that Fuchs wasn’t involved in pitching the proposal to brands and said that the couple received no direct payment for the Instagram stories posted throughout the surprise.

Advertising exec Bryan Pedersen, however, told The Atlantic: “Either her fiancé has been intimately involved in every single aspect of her business and influencer marketing career and knows every detail of her influencer partnerships, or she has had some input into that pitch deck. There’s no way a friend or potential fiancé would know how to put together a pitch deck with that detail.”

I’m not quite sure I buy into that. Fuchs’ close friend, Elicia Blaine Evans—who at one point took control of Fuchs’s phone and posted an Instagram story to deny rumours that the surprise was a setup—was formerly on the social media teams at Michael Kors and Audi. She played a major role in plotting the proposal, and she likely knows how to put together a savvy social media marketing deck.

Plus, having watched each of the 100+ Instagram stories posted to Fuchs’ account, I truly doubt she knew what was going on. You don’t sign yourself up to cry like that on camera. She’s either entirely shocked, or the next Meryl Streep.

Which makes this entire story even stranger: Grossman was shopping his future fiance around to brands, promising hashtags and mentions on her Instagram stories. How romantic!

Taylor Swift Releases “You Need to Calm Down”

THE STORY: In the middle of Pride Month, Taylor Swift released “You Need to Calm Down,” a self-professed LGBTQ anthem. The song takes on homophobia with lyrics like: “Sunshine on the street at the parade / But you would rather be in the dark ages;” “Shade never made anybody less gay;” and “Why are you mad? When you could be GLAAD?”

The video includes a jam-packed cast of queer celebrities, including Ellen DeGeneres, Laverne Cox, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and all five Queer Eye guys. It closes with a call to sign a petition in favour of the Equality Act, which would ban discrimination based on sexual orientation and identity.

RIGHTEOUSNESS OF THE RAGE: Swift is one of the biggest pop stars on the planet, she doesn’t need money. She is, however, somewhat desperate to win back public support. Throughout the 2016 election, Swift was heavily criticized for remaining silent on the topic of politics. In an essay for Elle Magazine earlier this year, she vowed to be more politically active and speak out against “disgusting rhetoric.” This song seems to be a part of that promise.

Though it’s entirely fair to call out Swift’s actions for being too little, too late. “Eight years after Lady Gaga’s ‘Born This Way,’ which came from an artist who was out as a bisexual woman at a time when the gay rights movement had far less mainstream traction than it does now,” Christina Cauterucci writes for Slate, ““You Need to Calm Down” looks even more pathetic.”
