I'm gonna start with @ruinedmyself because Kas was one of the first people to talk to me when I ventured into the spn fandom, and they've done nothing but make me feel incredibly welcomed <3 I love our silly little chats and also the pain we inflict on each other regularly. We really do share one (1) braincell, and I wouldn't want it any other way. You've got such a fantastic grip on Sam, on his badass-ery but also his softer and goofier side, and I scream excitedly whenever I see I got a reply from you!

No Sam without Dean, obviously, so I gotta yell about @bloodsalted a bit. Dixon is an extremely friendly person, and I'm still glad I managed to sweet-talk force you into joining me in hell. Or heaven, I suppose, is the better word, because our interactions are truly GREAT. Whether it's sexy times or angsty shit, every reply is magnificent and makes me giggle. You write Dean in all facets that make his character so lovable: his fears and passions and his silly times and also his anger. I love him to pieces!

Who doesn't love the king of hell? Cas, probably, but I adore every interaction with @murderdeals because it enables me to use all the pissed-off Cas icons. When you write Crowley, I can hear Mark yell into my ear. And honestly, I would have never guessed that Cas and Cain could become such good buddies, and yet they somehow ended up being the bestest bee bros, and that's largely due to your fantastic writing and your excellent grip on a character that can easily be branded the villain without second-guessing.

@singersalvaged should always be included in my rant about lovable people because she's just so chill to talk to! A truly great person who has an amazing view of Bobby Singer and writes him in a way that makes me believe the guy is standing behind me muttering idjit whenever I read a reply. And Allie! Let me gush about Allie, who's Cas' weed friend and brothel companion, and every single interaction just makes me howl with laughter. They're absolutely unhinged and dumb, and I wouldn't want it any other way.

While Crowley makes Cas want to eat glass, @eyeless-smiles makes him want to tear his own ears off because Corinth is such a fucking asshole (affectionate), a True Nightmare, and I love seeing him annoy Cas in every single paragraph. It's just hilarious, and they never hold their muse back, which is refreshing these days!

Cas loves to steal kids (just look at Jack), so it didn't take long for him to steal @innerwar 's Homelander when he was still a child with Vought. And honestly, I just adore this verse and you, friend? It's so funny and yet also sad, and I'm just so unbelievably happy that Homie gets a better life with this and that Cas gets to be a Dad again, and your writing is just SO FANTASTIC and catches Homelander's young voice brilliantly. 

I gotta yell about @nightmdic really loudly for a second because she is a FREAKING MAGNIFICENT OC and both Cas and I love her to pieces. She's kind and nice and helps Cas through his forced humanity without finding him (too) weird, and Paige just casually managed to write one of my favorite OCs here on Tumblr with her eye for detail and well-chosen words 

And last but not least, a big shoutout to @bleakfated who writes a lot of different spn muses (among others) and yet manages to hit that nail (= the voice of every single muse) square on the head every time! I hear Balthazar's funny-ironic voice when I write with him, I see Jody being Mom when I interact with her, I get the British Mick Vibes when it's his time to shine. I'm in awe of how someone manages to juggle so many muses and give everyone their own little voice. Kudos!

Sure! Let me try... Ten tips in no particular order:

Have fun It should make you happy to write your stories. Doing it for the views/kudos/comments/etc will only bring frustration and disappointment. Either rely on intrinsic motivation or give yourself a break! That said, do give me comments. I love comments. :3

Start small Your first fic is not going to be perfect, and it's going to be difficult to write because writing is a muscle of sorts. It gets easier and easier as you do it, so when you're just starting out, you'll struggle. Make the process easier on yourself by having small goals to begin with.

Know how the story ends and write an outline One big issue when writing is having a cool concept and no damn clue how to end it, so you end up dropping it halfway. Honestly, that's fine, it's still a learning experience, but I think you'll feel better about yourself with finishable works. Your outline can be as concise or as verbose as you'd like, but especially for a beginner it'll help you keep track of what you're doing and prevent writer's block to an extent. When you know what happens next, it's easier to get there!

Don't hesitate to change your ideas halfway Just make sure you adapt what happens later down the line, too. New ideas are inevitable and they are good. The risk is to get an incoherent mess or to write yourself in a corner. Keeping the ending in mind while accepting that it can change (and changing it accordingly every time you need to) is a good middle ground.

It's fine to skip the boring parts YOU write your story. You're allowed to just go "and then they traveled to Japan in a plane". You don't need to describe the plane ride. There are better ways than others to write timeskips (or other kinds of skips) but they rely on exactly the same principle: it's okay to focus on the Fun Stuff, in fact, the reader probably wants you to focus on the Fun Stuff. You don't need to write the story linearly. Too bad for them, you're going to focus on what YOU find fun, not them.

Get an AO3 account now, not when your work is written Not only do you unlock more features, it can take a few grating days to get the account open. Why AO3? It'll protect your fanworks with its own lawyers. If you need the option to get paid, use and link social media, and keep your fics safe on your AO3 account.

Do NOT type your story in AO3's submit form If you refresh the page it'll get deleted. Use Google Docs or Word instead. Keep your work safe!

When you're writing a sentence, make sure it's clear who's who Use a lot of names if you need to and don't change who the subject is before you've "reset" a common address. Epithets are not to be abused either— repetition isn't THAT big a deal, I promise (and repetitive sentence structure is a bigger monotony issue in my eye). This is a mistake I see around a lot so I'll mention it directly. Example: Anne loved planes. Her friend Jessica loved trains. Her blue hair complimented Anne's red very well. See, you can't tell the "her" is Jessica until you mention Anne, because she was the subject's friend in the previous part, not the subject. A correct and unambiguous sentence would be: Anne loved planes. Her friend Jessica loved trains. Jessica's blue hair complimented her red very well. We know you have blue hair and pronouns, Jessica, but you do have to share!

Read lots Exactly what it says on the tin! Reading feeds your skills and creativity. Read what you love, read outside your usual genres, read essays or textbooks about writing, read scientific articles etc etc. The more you read the more you'll learn, and the better you'll write, with more tools stored in your brain.

(Please) Don't delete old fics This is more advice on your mindset, you may think it's too early, but hear me out. If one day you're cringing that hard, you can orphan or anonymize them to get some distance. It always breaks my heart when fics get deleted entirely. You'll probably think of them fondly someday, so might as well push through, and remember— no matter the quality, your work of art was a friend who helped you grow and let you learn something from it. (See, that's why it's important for a beginner to hear this). You'll never know whose life you've changed, whose tears you've dried with laughter (or whose tears you've caused), whose worldview you've added to, or whose important life lesson you accidentally taught. We don't influence reality very much, most of us never hit it big after all, but no writer is entirely insignificant either. Whether it's fluff, crack, or darkfic, writing can give you the opportunity to change even just one life for the better. I find it amazing. It makes me want to write better and better.

I grow weary of the HP/JKR discourse.

Honestly HP - Dramione to be exact - is my first fandom, and my oldest. I’ve read for it for 20 years, over half my life. I used to be more involved, and when I was younger I bought some merch, but I haven’t bought anything new for HP in over 7 years, and I won’t in the future because I don’t want to monetarily support JKR.

But I bought the films 10 years ago. My books are older than that. JKR doesn’t get any money from me re-reading once every 5 years or watching physical media I have owned for decades. HP got me through some really rough points in life, when all I wanted was to escape. I grew up with Harry and the rest. My best friend, who is the 1 person in my life that I trust to share every part of myself with, we became friends at first because neither of our friend groups were into HP and we could talk about it with each other. We’ve been best friends for 20 years now, and I wouldn’t have her without all the bonding we did through our shared love of HP at first.

I get why people cut it out entirely, I can understand why some people choose not to engage with it at all. However, I don’t agree that creating or engaging with fan works means implicit support of JKR or her beliefs. Sorry not sorry, but me reading fic and leaving kudos and liking fanart of a non-canon ship gives nothing to JKR. The argument that free fan works are keeping HP alive and giving JKR money simply through “exposure” doesn’t ring genuine for me, not when there’s literal theme parks and public channels play the movies and businesses pay for licensing to make HP costumes, and mugs, and bedding, and dishware, and watches, and everything.

There are plenty of fandoms that survive and thrive that have no or very little merch available, it isn’t necessary, and people can really just stop buying HP stuff - like I did. And some companies have stopped their HP stuff, and I’m sure that trend will continue, but I doubt they will ALL stop, because in the end JKR isn’t the only person with shitty beliefs.

HP isn’t my only fandom, it’s not something I give 100% of my attention to, and I fall into new stuff all the time, but this whole idea of recommending other things to replace HP in peoples’ lives? Regardless of how many other books I read or shows I watch, HP is irreplaceable in my life. That ship has sailed. It sailed over 20 years. I don’t go on about it all the time or even recommend that people read them now, I tend to talk about more relevant media on a day-to-day basis (House of the Dragon, superhero stuff, Star Wars, Doctor Who, The Queen’s Thief books, All Souls books-and show, etc). But none of those can replace what HP was for me, and still is to a degree. I have to scroll down to see all the Ao3 bookmarks when I open a new tab because I have so many, but nothing else will ever comfort me like a fluffy Dramione one-shot after a truly awful day. Because they were the first ship I really fell in love with, and it’s been 20 fucking years.

I’m just tired of seeing posts about how people should read The Magicians instead (which, there was a rape scene and pedophilia - in the show at least - so not something I would put in the same category as HP) or Warrior Cats (please). By all means, recommend media you like to people, recommend new things and don’t engage with HP at all if you don’t want to. But please stop acting like it’s as simple as liking something new will make people stop liking HP, or that they’ll get the same things out of them. Sorry, this turned out way longer than I planned.

Sailom and Kanghan, Choice and Fate

Kanghan keeps saying how his entire life is predestined for him - marry, have a family, take over the family business.

In this ep we know for sure that Kanghan has feelings for Pimfah. At least I wasn't sure if he actually likes Pimfah as a friend or as smt else before- maybe i'm extra slow on these things-

But in the prev eps (and all through this ep, too) the tension between him and Sailom were palpable. I'm sure Kanghan realizes it too, but he refuses to consciously admit it.

Is it because he knows that, in his life, having feelings for a guy is not falling in line with the course set out for him? Because he has to marry, has to have a family, and where does Sailom fit in all these things?

Pimfah, on the other hand, comes from a similar background as Kanghan, they're families know e/o and honestly, Pimfah is nice, kind, and like, really pretty, too. It's so easy to like her. We get you Kanghan

Not saying that Kanghan's feelings for her are not valid, or lesser in any way (I love love my bi/pan/abro characters), but what he feels for Sailom and Pimfah are so, so different.

Around Pimfah he more relaxed, which is maybe because those two have known e/o for a very, very long time, maybe as children. They're familiar, but Kanghan doesn't make much of an effort to impress her even. He takes Sailom out on fancy ~expensive~ meals, and sure he does the same with Pimfah, but he teases Pimfah to pay, while with Sailom he's just... just so sweet and caring at meals ueueueue. I'm biased sue me

With Sailom he's got this charged, sexual thingy (we all saw that bed scene!), he wants to make Sailom blush (the bathroom scene!!!!!!!AHHHHH!!). And he wants to prove himself to Sailom, almost like he has to live up to something to be worthy of Sailom. (Which, I think, Granny realizes and is using it to make Sailom study.)

Kanghan probably sees Pimfah as a natural choice, someone he's supposed to like, and since they're friends, he doesn't protest to that, he lets himself fall into the role of her admirer without pausing to think if he actually likes her as a person, a friend, or as a partner.

And Sailom challenges this, and almost everything else in Kanghan's life.

He shows Kanghan that it doesn't matter if his father does not have expectations for him, for Sailom, and Granny, trusts his skills and expects more from him. He shows Kanghan that he can study mass-com (maybe become a musician, too, and not inherit his father's business!). He shows Kanghan that he can like, feel for some he's not supposed to, no matter what life has predestined for him.

He makes Kanghan realize his agency, and that no matter birth, no matter fate, Kanghan can have a choice.

Once again, I kudos the writer (s) for choosing their names!! So cool ueueue

Meg Thinks: Iron Flame

There's going to be spoilers in this post so please read at your own risk.

First of all, this book felt very Anime Filler Arc. I feel like we've been reading 2000 pages of setup between the first and second book.

Honestly, I think Book 1 and the first half of book 2 could have been one book as long as all the fluff from book 1 was taken out. Take out Jack Barlowe coming back and keep Varrish as the big bad (make him the secret Venin) and then keep the ending with everyone fleeing Basgiath with Book 2 starting with everyone in Aretia and go from there.

Because right now I am getting whiplash between all the back and forth between Aretia and Basgiath.

But let's get into it.

Things I Liked:

Always always the dragons. Though I do feel like they are still set up as comic relief and plot devices rather than fleshed out characters. We didn't get nearly enough of Sgaeyl (and Andarna) in this book.

Jesinia & Imogen, whom I felt were better friends to Violet than her own squadmates. And also felt like more fleshed out characters.

Things I Didn't Like:

Violet & Xaden. God, their relationship was so annoying. Xaden, you should know which information you should be forthcoming with. Violet, people are allowed to be private even if you're in a relationship with them.

Someone also mentioned that the whole "ask me" schtick feels very weaponized incompetence and now I couldn't agree more.

The "intentions" signet. Congratulations, you're just really good at reading body language. They introduce mind-reading as some stairway to madness but of course give the MMC the Lite version instead of actually writing something interesting like descent into insanity (but I guess the venin plot will be doing this for us ???)

Still no real explanation for Violet's disability and it doesn't seem to really impact her day-to-day life outside of a few throwaway lines. I would just like to see the representation be representing. But maybe this will pave the way for other authors.

I don't think having both Sloane and Cat vehemently hate Violet was necessary in one book. Cat's whole "I don't love him, I just want the crown" was flimsy at best, & Sloane just all of a sudden does a complete 180 as soon as Cat is in the picture makes no sense.

Things I Need Clarity On:

Okay, what color is Andarna supposed to be? Is she purple? Is she all of them? I was hoping she would be silver to match Violet. It just didn't feel explained very well. (The last couple chapters in general seemed rushed)

Things To Be Improved:

I still feel like I know next to nothing about Rhiannon, Ridoc, & Sawyer. I don't feel their camaraderie. I actually can barely tell the difference between Ridoc and Sawyer.

Like I had said in my Fourth Wing post, when it was announced Iron Flame would be released so soon, I knew that this book would be unpolished and rushed and RY had no time to really deep dive into the criticisms of the first book to improve her craft. But kudos to her for producing that crack that makes you want to keep reading.

Will I continue to read the series? Probably. Do I think they'll get any better? Probably not. Do I still hope for a decent live action adaptation? Most definitely.

Hi I’m here to scream about Bo-Katan because the parallel between her taking the darksaber in Guns for Hire and Heroes of Mandalore TOOK ME OUT. I’m all the way in my feels for this girl she DESERVES this but you know that even as she takes that blade, looking like she doesn’t have a single doubt or regret anywhere in her mind, that she’s feeling so many conflicting emotions about that blade and what it means to take on this role again.

Ugh it hurts so much to see her doing this I’m not gonna lie, like on one hand it’s awesome and she SHOULD be the one to reunite Mandalore, she deserves it, but in the other hand she’s already tried and failed so many times and to see her step into this role yet again, knowing that she’s risking breaking her heart and losing what little she has all over again, all because she wants her people to be strong and prosperous again, makes me want to fucking sob like Jesus Christ someone give her a hug and a stiff drink lord knows she needs one.

While I want that damn sword yeeted into a volcano, it was nice to see her get it (mostly because she's soooooo much more badass with it than Din). I didn't love the round about way she got it back, though kudos to Din for figuring out (but, dude, you JUST thought of that?). But she's getting more and more thrusted back into a leadership role, and I honestly think she's just tired.

And, one point I'd like to make is that while I am SURE Bo thinks she failed as a leader, I don't think that's fair for her or us to think. She DID manage to get Mandalore's shit whipped back into shape after Maul (if people nearly 20 years on still consider her the rightful ruler, according to Fenn). That's hardly a failure.

But after that, she was up against the Empire. And we all know how terrible the Empire is. Even to planets and people who didn't resist their occupation, they were still cruel. And to people who fought back?

Well, it's little wonder Mandalore got glassed. If the Death Star hadn't been blasted (not really sure where in the timeline the glassing occurred, but I assume it was after at least the first), I don't think there would be an actual planet left to reclaim. They just nuked it, instead.

Fighting and losing against the Empire isn't failure. It is an actual fact of life in that era of the GFFA. The Empire used fear and MASSIVE weapons to rule, and it would have been nearly impossible to truly win. Yeah, Bo helped beat the Empire back, out of Sundari at least, but I think that ultimately made them come back even harder, and I hate that she counts these things as failure.

All that being said, I think she rather sink into the ground than lead again. And I don't trust the Armorer. But here she is, her new bestie Din backing her, and it's time to lead these hellraisers....again.

Ran couldn't help herself but to stare at you, how you dozed off in your seat—head leaning against the train window, observing as if you were some kind of exotic being. You looked worse for wear, exhausted and sickly even. Ran wonders, racking her brain, when the last time was, she had seen you somewhat healthy. Probably before Shinichi had been gone, she wasn't sure, but honestly you always looked sort of sickly even when you were healthy. 

Ran hadn't been in touch with you as of lately anyways, not after the Holmes Mansion Case. So she really didn't know if something is or was wrong with you, though she guess she could finally catch up with you during the trip. Ran wanted to ask you after all, if it was true that you really liked boys more than girls. Would be a shame though, such a handsome boy like you, not getting a cute girl, unbelievably. Perhaps the reasons for your bad health, she guessed, was your orientation towards the same gender, could be a possibility.

Ran had no idea why Sachiko was glaring at her, every so often from behind her magazine, but it was making Ran feel just a tiny bit uncomfortable. Had she done something to upset her friend? Maybe, but Ran didn't felt like to ask directly about it, not wanting to possible make it worse.

«Sachiko, you shouldn't be glaring so much, it might gives you early wrinkles» joked Ran, wanting to lift the tension a bit.

Sachiko scoffed, concentrating back on her magazine and ignoring Ran. This girl had some guts, honestly, to act all so saint and kind when she said such horrible things about you. It would be no use to have a discussion with Ran about it in the first place and Sachiko didn't want to unnecessarily wake you during it—you needed to rest as much as you could. Sometimes people, which you were close to, could have a mindset of a brickwall and it would take some time to bring them to understand. Though sometimes it was no use, but Sachiko had yet to see which kind Ran would be.

Heiji was the first one to spot you, when you and the others had walked out of the Station. He couldn't help himself but to grin from ear to ear. A whole week with you and Heiji felt as if he were like one of those Manga-schoolgirls who gushed about their whatever. Seeing each other in a long distance relationship wasn't easy as people seemed to believe it be. The both of you cherished it always when you two could spend time together when able to do.

Heiji had pulled you into a hug, once you had walked over after stretching your body—wanting to feel some cracking, after a three hour train ride it was long overdue. It brought you to laugh gleefully as you returned the hug, burying your face into his neck and simply wanting to feel him as you two basked in moment of twosomeness and whispering to each other how you missed another. 

The throat clearing coughs of the others around you, brought you two back into reality. Sheepishly you let go of Heiji and going over to Kazuha to greet her as well. While you and girls were having a short talk with Kazuha, Conan dragged Heiji a bit away from the others. Heiji crouched down to Conan, giving him a questioning look. 

«Ne, Heiji, we should keep good watch over [Name], I'm having a bad feeling ever since we got here.»

«What sort of feeling Ku–kiddo?»

«One of those uneasy one, which would made your stomach turn...»

Heiji rubbed his chin, nodding at Conan,

«Ya think it's about the Stalker [Nickname] has?»

You watched them both, how they were whispering, probably gossiping with each other again. Ever since that one case back then, Heiji and Conan had started to be best friends and honestly it was some sort of sight to witness. You didn't mind, you fond it endearing—Conan was your cousin and when he liked Heiji than Shinichi would too, after all Conan does resembles a tiny version of your brother.

«So, where are we going for lunch?»

While you walked through the City to the food place Kazuha had suggested you all will enjoy, both Conan and Heiji had taken ahold of your hands. Conan more out of brotherly instinct, after all that uneasy feeling of something lurking and being watched had returned.

If Conan's deductions were right than your mysterious stalker, which he guessed was this Daiki guy, was here as well. Neither Conan himself or Heiji could be around you for 24/7, there would always be a moment were you would be alone, but Conan will try his best no to let this happen.

When you have reached the restaurant and about to go in, you stopped once your name being called out. Conan and Sachiko never had whipped around their head so fast, it was almost painfully to do.  

«Oh [Name]! That's some odd luck I have here to meet you in Osaka,» Daiki give a small wave, smiling brightly like always.

«It sure is....» you said, frowning a bit. A coincidently meeting twice could be count as a lucky strike, but a third time? Not so much. Conan gripped your hand a bit tighter, stepping in front of you as a sort shield. Meanwhile Kazuha had gone back in to get Heiji, she could tell the atmosphere was tense.

Heiji, once back out with Kazuha, stood now next to you, causally putting his arm around your shoulders and pulling you a bit into his side. Giving a scrutinised glare at the men before him. So, this was also that Daiki-guy Sachiko and Kudo had told him about? The guy who probably wrote these disgusting letters to [Name]. Some guts he have, Heiji thought, to walk up to them and act so falsely friendly.

«Well, and who might you be?» Daiki asked venomously, smile vanishing in a instant when he came face to face with the boy—which had hugged you so lovingly.

«I'm [Name]'s Boyfriend. And the question is more, who are you?» Heiji returned the question with a raised brow and a devalued tone

The glare which Daiki had giving afterwards, before stomping wordlessly off, had startled you. That flash of absolutely anger in his eyes, was making your stomach turn with uneasiness.

This webcomic’s story is so much more interesting and compelling when it’s not about Hades and Persephone.

I’ve seen a lot of people point out that Psyche’s design changes literally every time RS remembers she exists and puts her back in the comic and, yeah, I see it. But honestly, I’m digging her current look. The hairstyles especially. Kudos to RS for improving at least on that front.

As for Psyche’s backstory, I’m actually pretty happy with how RS decided to catch us up to speed. The flashback didn’t span several chapters this time and only told us the essentials, which is a rarity when it comes to flashbacks in LO.

Though admittedly I’m kinda disappointed that Psyche going against Apollo was Zeus’ idea and not her own. Would have been nice if Psyche decided to out Apollo by herself, because by this point she’s one of the few who know what he’s actually like and exactly what he did. And, as the episode reminds us several times, she hit him with an Arrow of Hate. The seeds for animosity between them were already planted, there really didn’t need to be a deeper reason for Psyche investigating him.

Moving on, I stand by my assessment that hxp are the weakest part of LO, but Persephone’s dialogue about re-defining what virginity means to her personally and the whole thing about virginity being a really exclusionary social construct was pretty neat.

Also loving the acknowledgement that you yourself decide what your first time is and that non-consensual sexual encounters do not count if you don’t want them to. That’s pretty cool.

Aaaand, then we went right back to the boring stuff.

Hades obsessing over what ring to give Persephone was probably meant to be cute, but it just came off as super pathetic to me.

Girl told him several times she wants to take it slow and he can’t stop getting his head out of the clouds and raving on and on about marriage. It’s really not as endearing as RS obviously thinks it is.

EDIT: So, @jejesoso  and @minthe-lover actually pointed out in a message and post respectively that RS having Persephone deconstruct virginity in her little speech directly runs counter to a much earlier scene in which Eros explains that him and Aphrodite can influence everybody who isn’t a virgin and Eros being immediately able to tell Persephone isn’t one. So not only does the concept of virginity that RS tries to reject through her mouthpiece self-insert actually exist in this universe, tangible proof and all, it’s also pivotal to certain gods’ powers and spheres of influence.

RS really can’t write for shit, huh?

She keeps forgetting about characters, plot-lines and world rules she established and then quickly tries to paint over it with very weak white feminism.

I should really stop giving that woman the benefit of the doubt, I end up getting kicked in the teeth every single time.

Ships that I have some things to say about (warning: SPOILERS)

I'm SORRY but the Darkling x Alina has to be one of the most controversial ships ever. Don't get me wrong, they both have really really good chemistry, and the Darkling even asked for consent in that scene, but still. Looking at the big picture, sure, the trope was good, and the Darkling definitely had feelings for Alina, but let's not forget that the Darkling was really toxic and manipulative towards her. He also might've been in love with the idea of her rather than her. Idk.. it was definitely problematic.

Ben even said during an interview "We should be able to mark it as problematic and still find it interesting", which sums up the situation, honestly.

The thing is, I feel like the they could have done the thing where the Darkling loved her so much that he'd switch sides and become good. They had excellent chemistry already, why not buy into that (give Ben more screentime yk? lol) ? I feel like the Darkling was so consumed by his goal, he forgot to care about other people, and Alina could have been the one to save him. But no, she just stabs him, and he dies.

On the flip side, I also really hated the Mal x Alina ship too. The thing is, the TV show really skips over some of the more contentious portions of their relationship beforehand, which actually makes it better. They weren't that good of friends in the books? But in the TV show it was like they were each other's bestie. So it makes more sense in the TV show when Mal gets upset that Alina has to leave. So, I have to say, the TV show ship is definitely better than the book ship. Then it comes down to the acting/directing. The dialogue and delivery of the dialogue is almost perfect, Kudos to Mal, because he literally went to the ends of the earth to find Alina. HOWEVER, I don't think they had much chemistry romantically AT ALL. I could feel their bond when it came to their friendship for sure, but nothing more. (The only one bed trope is also hilarious in the TV show.) The thing is, the show took out the jealousy parts of the "love triangle" between Mal, Alina, and her suitors (which was a really good choice, tbh). HOWEVER, they replaced it with nothing, which effectively took out every and all tension that Mal and Alina could have had. So, we end up with small amounts of flirting and shy looks.

I honestly wished that they just kept Mal and Alina best friends, no romantic shenanigans, and Mal travels to the ends of the earth to find Alina (because that made me cry alone without romance). Then, Alina saves the Darkling and makes him understand his actions. And then they could do the thing where it's too late, and they have to find a way to reverse his actions. Idk it's a really complicated plot...

There's so much more I have to say, honestly, but I'm just covering one part of the story (where Alina doesn't fake her own death, and Mal doesn't suddenly decide he wasn't in love with Alina all along, none of the Nikolai engagement...)

This complicated and messed up plotline is why I stay on the Crows side of the story lmao, with Jesper and Wylan

May 4 - The Eve of St. George's Day

Re Dracula/Dracula Daily

Poor man's off to a bad start. Asking after information on Count Dracula and just getting them dodge the question, suddenly forget their german or crossing themselves. I have to agree with him. Not very comforting at all. At least he gets a good quality coach out of all this. If he must travel into a horror, he may as well do so comfortably.

Both Jonathon and the inn lady are so kind. The woman overcame her fear to try and warn him off the best she could. And even though he considered her fears unrealistic, if not outright hysterical, he still still reacted gently and didn't dismiss them. Instead he emphasised the importance of his work/duty to him and that he would go. He didn't even get upset at her gift of a rosary and wore the cross despite considering it idolatrous.

Her emphasis on it being the eve of St. George's Day was interesting. Her fear was that after midnight it would be the time when the mysterious evils of the world would be at their height of power. I've hear of this superstition in regards to Samhain, All Hallows Eve and the like, but I've never heard of this holiday.

So of course I looked it up, just briefly. Apparently the exact date jumps around a bit according to local tradition, and more commonly, it's relation to Easter. It's a feast day set aside for the patron saint, St. George, a roman officer of Greek descent who was executed for his Christian ideals. There's also a legend wherein he executed a dragon who had been extorting more and more, worse and worse, from the locals until they tried to give it a princess. It was a popular tale amongst the Byzantine cultural circles in the 12th century.

I won't pretend to understand how this relates to a day of evil, because I don't 😅, but the symbology is interesting. Will Mina be the princess in this story, with Jonathon as George and Dracula as the dragon? If so, what will be the preliminary tributes. Since he's a vampire, I'm guessing random village women.

But moving on from all that, we have Jonathon writing while waiting for his carriage. The whole experience has left him extremely unnerved. To such an extent he actually wrote that the journal should be his goodbye if it reached Mina before he himself did. It was honestly very ominous and the shaking of his voice in that part was an excellent touch. Kudos to the VA. Seriously though, I don't know if it's his duty, curiousity or adventurousness getting in the way, but if he's that disturbed he should just turn tail and leave.

The happy relief when the (of course, late) coach arrived was amusing. Broke the tension right away.

Unfortunately there's no poll this time. I've no idea if the poll is standard or a treat. But the chapter was excellent. Certainly works you up for the horrors to come.

Initial Thoughts on the OPLA: Episode 1

I’ve just reread the manga through the East Blue + rewatched the anime through Orange Town with my sister (a coincidence on that one), so I’ve got the story really fresh on my mind and want to record my initial impressions on what works and what doesn’t. I’ve been a major live action proponent for years now, so super excited to finally get to watch it.

The Good

The sets are all spectacular. The ships especially at the start are an absolute treat!

The casting across the board is very strong, both in bringing to life the visuals of some characters (Coby and Higuma are gasp-out-loud exact replicas of their characters) and in terms of creating a world that feels real and lived in. Iñaki is shockingly believable as Luffy, every dopey line feels organic; Mackenyu delivers in the fight choreography and physicality of Zoro; and Emily Rudd is exceeding my expectations based on what we saw in the trailer.

In some scenes with Luffy/Coby, they light Coby so he has this almost angelic glow. And I love that. Because it would be too obvious to light Luffy up like the sun, but instead, it’s like Coby is lit from within in the light of Luffy’s will

The way they layer in the flashbacks throughout the episode works much better than one big cutaway, so kudos to that decision. (Also child Luffy is a delight.)

So far really enjoying the fight choreos. They don’t overstay their welcome, each character has their own style – particularly like the way Luffy kind of falls all over himself in the Axe Hand Morgan fight – and everything looks clean and like it connects. Big fan of letting Nami show off her staff skills. So long as they don’t have her beating major antagonists, I think it’s a good addition because it would be visually disappointing if she just skulked around during the fights

Speaking of Nami, the way they’re integrating Nami into the story in ep 1 worked really well. The changes to the plot may cause issues in later episodes, but it was a very solid intro to Nami – preserving her iconic intro scene with the Buggy pilots – while also giving her a different mission and reason to partner up with Luffy. And anyway, I like watching Nami hatch a scheme.

They translated some of the more ridiculous, on-the-nose character traits of the antagonists into believable representations of the same thing. Morgan doesn’t walk around announcing his “greatness” every ten seconds, but he’s swayed by flattery, loves a statue of himself, and can’t accept responsibility. Alvida is vain and narcissistic without being a mean-spirited trope. It’s great.

A lot of funs are going to debate if certain lines or jokes are cringe, but I think the dialogue is charming and very much in line with the humor popularized in major action franchises. It’s not groundbreaking humor but it got a chuckle out of me a few times. And honestly who gives a fuck about cringe? I think a lot of anime fans live with the specter of their high school bully looming over their shoulder, imagining what they’d say to any given thing and they’ve gotta let that shit go

The Meh

In Luffy’s opening scene, it appears he’s talking straight to the audience, introducing himself, only to reveal he’s actually talking to a News-Coo when the camera cuts. And the joke is not nearly funny enough to justify how jarring those first 20 seconds are when you think they’re going to have characters address the camera directly.

The timeline in Shellstown gets flipped around, so that we can see Zoro earn his arrest, which is a great choice – show don’t tell and all that. BUT the change they made to why Zoro fights Helmeppo drains all the nobility out of it. They keep saying “you protected that girl” but Rika wasn’t in danger? Helmeppo was unkind to her but not threatening, not siccing his vicious attack dogs on her like in the anime. If Zoro hadn’t interfered, she would have been fine. I appreciate he doesn’t like bullies, but I think it’s a weaker reason to intervene and should be less impressive to Luffy.

The named characters who attend Roger’s execution stand out so ridiculously. Everyone else is covered in dirt and wearing beige tones, and you’ll cut to the cleanest looking man playing Mihawk or young Shanks with his hair standing out like a beacon. It’s very much that “anime spot the protagonist” meme

The Ugly

That man – while admittedly very sexy –is not Garp. It’s almost shocking compared to how carefully the spirit of every other character has been preserved.

The changes made to Coby’s story in episode 1 are pretty disappointing.  A pretty key part of Luffy’s character is that Luffy helps people who ask for help or fight for themselves; He’s not just a hero who will swoop in when he witnesses injustice. Coby earns Luffy’s respect and protection in the manga. Here, he doesn’t. He just gets dragged along reluctantly with Luffy until the very end of the episode, where he finally makes his stand, and it’s pretty anticlimactic.

Withholding judgment for the Time Being

Live action Zoro is a lot angstier so far. He’s just as confident and competent, but less likely to laugh, has less fun with it. From his intro scene, it appears the death of Kuina may be weighing on him more heavily (wonder if it will be a more recent death in the live action?). He leaves Shellstown not yet bought in on Luffy’s will. I think slowing his arc down makes sense for a tv show, so interested to see how it delivers on that.

We’ll see where they take the Garp arc. If it keeps Coby and Helmeppo on my screen – and more importantly, gives Coby a chance to redeem himself – I may come to love it.

Also, kudos to woo for helping mc by giving her lozenges, I already love his character juygtfdfghj (I have a feeling he’s gonna be my favourite)

Oh gosh Mingi’s “it’s okay, I’m not going to hurt you” and Yunho's “I’m just worried about you, I want you safe” had me melting on the floor. T^T

As someone who finds… the whole abo thing slightly… *sigh* how do I put it nicely? A lot of it goes very close to the nc category and always manages to make me uncomfortable especially since boundaries are not set before and just... Yeah. So, the fact that they’re talking about it beforehand and setting boundaries makes this so much better? I mean I know you said that ch 3 borders on dubcon, but they did talk about it so I guess that worked out well?

Bruhhhhhh I LOVE HOW YOU’VE WRITTEN MINGI HERE JKHTYRDFGCHJH the no-nonsense, level-headed guy~ T^T (who also runs away when things calm down lmao... Well... We can give him this one though, the aftermath is quite awkward)

Oh gosh, Sannie being the voice of reason is so on brand. (And side note, the whole, “but being a romantic doesn’t mean you have to let people hurt you” seems like such a San thing to say I— *sob*) I honestly love chapter 5 so much? Can’t wait to see how the friendship between mc and woosanhwa grows (because I literally love them so much rn ahaha) and how things turn out with yungi~

also regarding your note about dubcon/noncon, i couldn't agree more! i'm comfortable reading both of those things if called out clearly in a fic, and i recognize why it's a kink, but it's really a sensitive topic that isn't for everyone and should be handled delicately. that was a big reason why i wrote the consent scene pre-heat in, and i'm glad that resonated with you! i've mentioned this on the blog before, but there will be a noncon scene in a later chapter between the MC and another character however, i just want to be clear it is not actually sexual, it's more just the implication of it and reader grappling with being an omega and feeling like she doesn't have the autonomy she wants to have. i really hope that is taken well by everyone, but just wanted to mention it again since you talked about it and for any other readers that may not have seen my earlier note.

also wait yes protective mingi / alpha mingi makes my brain spin. i'm excited to write yunho later on being a little more self assured about everything because he was leaning more hesitant in earlier chapters and letting mingi take the lead.

Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? I do! I always respond to thank those who left me a comment at the very least and will try to answer questions or react to something specific if they have called it out. Fandom is about interaction.

What is a fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? I suppose that depends on how one defines angst. Intensive Care ends with both Cody and Obi-Wan gravely wounded in bacta tanks. But None of Us Perfect ends with an OFC giving Anakin advice that will ultimately fail because...you know...Vader. So one of them is what I would maybe call "modern angst" in that fandom seems to have more specific definitions of it now but the other seems like a somewhat happy ending when we all know it's really not and never could be.

What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Honestly? I have no idea. These days, I tend to only write happy/fluffy sort of stuff, so most of them end well. Strictly Ballroom is about Waxer and Boil's first kiss and it's pretty sweet and happy, I think.

Do you get hate on fics? To date? No. Will I eventually? Probably? I dunno. I'm pretty small potatoes in the fic world....I don't have the kind of spotlight that draws hate.

Do you write smut? If so, what kind? Yes, I suppose that I do. 98% of it is clonesex, but there is a side of het in there with Thire and an OFC because when I started writing smut, I needed to do it with the kind of sex I am familiar with.

Do you write crossovers? I have written one crossover in my life. It is not on AO3.

Have you ever had a fic stolen? Not that I am aware of, no.

Have you ever had a fic translated? Yes, but it was a million years ago in a fandom far, far away.

Have you ever co-written a fic before? Yes.

What’s your all-time favorite ship? This question gives ME angst. I am not a shipper by nature and I've never had an OTP. In TCW, I very much enjoy Rex/Cody and it probably edges out my fondness of Codywan a little.

What’s a wip you want to finish, but doubt you ever will? I have about 15K written as a sequel to None of Us Perfect and I really would like to finish it because I started it when the Kenobi series aired as a sort of tribute to my friend Alex, who passed away before she could see it. I'm also just really fond of that OFC and would like to tell more of her story. But it's such a personal project that gets me deep in my feels, so it can be hard to work on.

What are your writing strengths? If the comments are to be believed, I'm somewhat funny? I do think I can turn a decent phrase from time to time, too.

What are your writing weaknesses? I used to write in past tense and, back then, I think I was pretty good at action, but now that I'm in present tense, I don't think that's true anymore. I struggle with it not reading staccato (he did this, then he did that, then this happened), so I actually tend to avoid it.

Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic? I tried it once with that crossover mentioned above, but did it phonetically because I wanted the readers to have a sense of how it sounded instead of just looking at words in a language they didn't speak. I don't think I would do it again aside from a word here or there as needed.

I have a very soft spot for the second HL fic I wrote, which is probably still online somewhere, but I'm not going to try to link to it because it's under my real name (because that's how we rolled in 1997). 💕Things I Love About My Fanfic Readers💕

Since I’m single on Valentine’s Day (as I have always been) and since I’m struggling to write my K-Drama list for Valentine’s Day, I wanted to put out this list instead of things that I love about my fanfic readers! ❤️

Their Enthusiasm

Goodness, their enthusiasm always has my heart! I simply adore when I get a notification that I got a comment and see a reader post a comment in which their enthusiasm shines through about my writing, some examples:

• “PLEASE TOKKIHEART BRING THE WORLD MORE KANG CHUL AND YEONJOO CONTENT TO KEEP US ALL ALIVEEEEEE”

• “OMG I NEVER THOUGHT OF A DAY WHERE I NEEDED TO READ A STORY ABOUT KANG CHUL AND YEON JOO SHARING CLOTHES AND FALLING IN LOVE WITH IT”

• “this is good, very good, soooooooooo good”

• ❤️❤️💕

(Yes, I have a lovely reader who just posts hearts and it’s kinda cute and I just send hearts back ❤️)

When They Have Long Conversations With Me In The Comments

Some of my readers probably don’t have Tumblr or any other means by which to engage with fellow fans, so we just wind up bonding and having very long conversations with each other in the comments section and I honestly love that.

But also I so strongly relate to their struggle of not being able to talk about their thoughts, feelings, etc. about K-Dramas because I honestly only have 1 friend who watches K-Dramas of their own free will to talk to and they haven’t even seen W yet 😭

When They Check Up On Me???

Honestly, my heart. Like I mentioned that I had a severe storm that caused flooding in my town which led to like… 3 or 4 evacuation orders and we lost power for like 24 hrs and I still have a lovely reader who checks in on me weeks later to see how I’m doing and if the flood conditions are better and it’s just so sweet and I feel so loved to know they want to make sure I’m okay. 🥹

I just wish I could do the same thing in return because sometimes when my frequent commenters don’t post anything after a long time, I worry about them and hope that they’re doing okay 💔

When They Tell Me Their Day/Week/Month Was Horrible, But My One-Shot/Chapter Update Made Them Feel Better

I… there are no words to fully express how much it means to me to know that my fics have this affect on others 🥺💜

My silly little romantic fluff writings about my favorite K-Drama couple brought you joy?? It motivated you?? You feel better because I wrote this??

I don’t know, hearing stuff like that makes me feel so… happy? And honored? I feel like because what I’m doing is making others happy, I should keep going. I’m 90% certain this is why Key To Your Life is at 13 chapters now and didn’t get dropped at some point or something??

When They Give Me A Review On The Chapter/One-Shot

I have a few readers who constantly try to give me reviews, both short and long and sometimes it’s why they don’t post so often and I just want to hug them and tell them it’s okay, they can just post, they don’t have to give me a detailed review.

At the same time, I enjoy reading their reviews and I love reading them, laughing, clutching my heart and rolling around while I read them aloud to myself.

When A New Reader Binge-Reads My Fics

It’s fun, even if they never leave a comment, to watch someone discover my writing and apparently fall in love with it so much that they go through and read everything.

Like, I know I’ve only written 12 fanfics and 3 of those are chaptered, but dang! You’re dedicated, you leave a kudo on everything as you go and it seems like you love my writing! I see you and I appreciate you!

How Nice They Are

I know this sounds like an amalgamation of everything I’ve already said, but it’s not meant to be?

My best friend/occasional beta reader writes whump fics for the MacGyver (2016) reboot and every single time that I share the comments that I get from my readers with her, she expresses how envious she is of me and how nice my readers are and the type of comments that I get. I don’t know if that’s a commentary on whump readers, the fandom she’s in or a commentary on fluff readers or the fandom I’m in, but either way… you folks are so nice you spark envy from my best friend. 🤣

If I had to guess, it’s probably a commentary on the fandom I’m in. The fandom is probably starved for content and fics, I know I am lol

Anyway, it makes me so happy that my readers are so nice. Especially since I am very new to writing fanfics, so I feel like I chose the right place to start out. You all have no idea how much I stress about whether I have written something cringe or too cheesy or way too weird or that I’m writing the characters unfaithfully.

I think that concludes this list, but there’s probably so many other things that I love about my readers that I haven’t thought of lol
